Apple’s streaming TV service remains shrouded in mystery

Apple TV Streaming

It’s certainly no secret that Apple has grand ambitions in the TV streaming space. Over the past few months alone, the company has made a number of intriguing and notable series purchases. Two of the more prominent deals include a multi-million dollar deal to reboot the 80s sci-fi classic Amazing Stories and a new original series from Damien Chazelle, the famed director and writer behind films such as La La Land and Whiplash.

Competing with incumbents like Netflix and HBO is clearly a tall and expensive endeavor, though coming up with cash to pay for projects is obviously not a concern for Apple given the company’s swelling bank account. What’s more, word is that Apple has given the folks in charge of its TV unit — former Sony execs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg — a $ 1 billion pool from which they can draw from to help develop, produce, and acquire original content.

Chad Michael Murray Finds Out If His Late Grandmother was Murdered After Years of Mystery

Chad Michael Murray had never known the cause of death of his late grandmother — until now.

In fact, there were only two people who knew what exactly happened at the time of her death: his grandmother and her husband, his late grandfather, who was accused of her murder.

On Wednesday’s episode of Hollywood Medium With Tyler Henry, Murray, 36, finally got some closure about her death.

“There’s this feeling that grandpa would’ve said or verbalized something to people before he died and after he died, his words were changed. He’s like, ‘No, I’m not taking accountability for this. This isn’t right.’ There’s something wrong here with the narrative that’s put after,” Tyler Henry, 22, told the One Tree Hill alum.

“For some reason, they’re having me talk about grandma. They’re having me talk about a fall for some reason. I don’t know what this is,” Henry explained.

“The speculation from the stories that I got from my grandfather was that he was arrested for her murder,” the actor said. “She died at 17 and she just had my mother. She was found with her hands tied behind her back, hung in the basement. So there was a fall, just in a different way.”

“And then after that, he was cleared and they didn’t really have enough evidence to say, ‘It was you that did it.’ ”

RELATED: Why Hollywood Medium‘s Tyler Henry Says Connecting with Michael Jackson Was ‘Really Humbling’

But according to Henry, Murray’s late grandmother died by suicide.

“Before I got here, there was this woman who came through who I acknowledged passing away tragically. But it came through in a way of like, taking accountability to some extent for her actions,” Henry informed the American Drifter author. “But I’m thinking that it might have been even her way of kinda trying to come through and say, ‘Hey, this is something that I’m putting more on myself.’ So, I don’t think he killed your grandmother.”

After speaking with Henry and learning the details about his late grandmother’s death, Murray revealed, “I am, without a doubt, a believer,” adding, “He’s pretty damn good at it.”

Hollywood Medium airs Wednesdays (9 p.m. ET) on E!

The devastating episode rocked fans to their very cores — and earned Moore, 33, high praise for her emotionally charged scenes.

“Can I take the day off tomorrow? I’m grieving,” tweeted one fan.

“Mandy Moore didn’t act,” tweeted another. “She nailed it.”

Fans had long been theorizing about the precise manner of Jack’s death, ranging from a plane crash to a heart attack to a drunk driving accident (he was a recovering alcoholic). Ventimiglia, 40, previously told Entertainment Weekly that the event was going to be absolutely “soul-crushing.”

“Once you figure out the moment where it’s going to happen, you may get some hope — and then it’s all going to go away,” he said. “I think the best thing I can say — or the worst thing I can say — is: It’s going to be f—ing painful.”

#FridayReads: The Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide Unlocks The Mystery of Car Care

What’s the biggest financial commitment made by most people? The answer: Other than buying a home, it’s buying a car. Yet, most of us have no idea how to protect that investment, specifically by knowing and practicing even the basics of car care. As a result, we pay a high price to fix problems that should have been prevented, are vulnerable to less-than-honest service providers, and put both our physical safety and financial stability at risk.

Well, I’ve got good news for you: Reading the Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide, and taking the car care advice of the author, “shechanic” and auto shop owner Patrice Banks, will save you literally thousands of dollars—yes, I said thousands—for a book that costs less than a half-tank of gas.

(Patrice Banks. Image: Instagram/girlsautoclinic)

Banks, a former engineer who changed careers to become a car mechanic and owner of an auto repair shop staffed by female mechanics, wrote the Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide in order to empower women to take better care of their cars. She covers everything from do-it-yourself car care basics such as adding oil to the engine, to what you need to know to confidently deal with auto mechanics without feeling intimidated or getting ripped off. While the book is targeted to women (who Banks enthusiastically recruits into her shecanic community), the information is on point and valuable to readers regardless of their gender—in fact, it’s a great book for couples to read together. (How romantic!)

(Image: Instagram/girlsautoclinic)

Smart in both language and design, the Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide is an invaluable resource for getting the most out of your car while keeping the costs of owning and maintaining it from wiping out your budget. The book provides loads of fascinating car care information, full of pictures and instructions, helping you answer questions such as: How can I tell if I need brakes? What’s killing my car battery? How often am I supposed to change my air filter? What does that light on my dashboard mean? What should I do if my car overheats? Is this something I can fix myself? Or do I need to take it to an auto shop? Should I spend extra to get a 4-wheel-drive vehicle? And the most important car care questions of all: How much is this going to cost me? What will it cost if I don’t do it?

Your car is a major investment, especially if you rely on it to maintain employment and generate income, or as a primary means of transportation for your family. Reading the Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide and becoming a bona fide shecanic is a great way to protect that investment—and maybe bond with your significant other, too.

The mystery behind the Easter Island

Easter Island is one of the most striking and unforgettable islands in the Pacific Ocean. As a part of Chile, the island is located in the Polynesian Triangle and has a huge amount of Polynesian culture and heritage attached to it. Most people assume that because it’s a part of Chile, the island would best represent Chilean culture, but, that’s not the case. Because the principal inhabitants of the island were the Rapa Nui people, Polynesian culture is most definitely the order of the day here.

There have been a lot of studies of the Easter Islands, and Polynesian culture, but, some of the studies have thrown up some interesting findings. We’re going to look a little closer at Easter Island, and what genetic analysis has shown us about the island. This is one of the most picture perfect places on Earth, and would make a wonderful choice for your next vacation!

The island

Easter Island is one of the defining islands in the Pacific Ocean, and one of the most recognizable of all islands. It is best-known for the 887 moai statues that populate the island, built by the indigenous Rui Napa people. These are a huge draw and bring a lot of tourism to the island, and resulted in Easter Island being classified a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. With only around 5,800 residents, the island is among the most remote inhabited islands in the world.

DNA testing

A genetic study of the island and its people has thrown up some very interesting results. They showed that the people of the island had definitive South American DNA, despite the fact that a large amount of their heritage was actually Polynesian. Furthermore, more tests revealed an absence of South American DNA before around the 18th Century. It seems incredibly strange that there would be no direct genetic link between Polynesians and South Americans, especially considering the location of Easter Island.

Hypotheses

The findings seem to contradict the evidence and vice versa. It is clear that those on the island had links with South Americans around the 18th Century, due to DNA results, but, it is also obvious that there was no mark left by any kind of inbreeding. It’s most likely that trade routes opened up between Easter Island and South America, and this is why there was such a strong apparent link with South Americans. It seems as though the South Americans could have returned to the island to trade, and left descendants among the Polynesians.

Overall, we can’t really be sure why the results here are the way they are. There are a lot of potential reasons that could have led to such a discovery, and contradictory evidence might simply be as a result of not having enough samples or evidence to study. Nevertheless, Easter Island and the genetic makeup of the population is an incredibly interesting study. Hopefully, in the future, we will find out more and be able to nail down with certainty, where the genetic DNA line can be traced back to.

“This Is Us” just explained where Kate’s mystery dog came from, but we still need to know its name

“This Is Us” just explained where Kate’s mystery dog came from, but we still need to know its name

“This Is Us” just explained where Kate’s mystery dog came from, but we still need to know its name

The moment was brief, but This Is Us just answered one of our *burning* questions in tonight’s episode! If you haven’t seen Season 2, Episode 3, “Deja Vu,” now might be a good time to skedaddle because #SPOILERS. Last chance, because we’re about to get into plot details…

This week’s This Is Us saw Rebecca take Jack out on a romantic date to try to work through some of their marital difficulties.

She makes a move, but he rebuffs her advances so the pair head back to their home pretty quickly. Once there, Jack tells Rebecca that it’s been difficult to open up to her as of late, but that he wants to keep talking to her. Rebecca throws their burgers into the grass, and follows him back into the car so they can continue their date.

That may seem like a little detail about the burgers, but as we’ve learned time and time again…there are NO small details on This Is Us. That burger attracts the attention of a dog, who starts chowin’ down. And not just any dog. No, no, no, this is the dog we saw Kate clutching at the end of the Season 2 premiere. This is the dog that appeared out of nowhere, but is a potential clue about Jack’s death.

“Hey, looks like someone got to enjoy the burgers tonight,” Jack says upon finding the pup.

Rebecca wonders if it’s a stray, and Jack picks the dog up. It looks like love at first sight if you ask us, which means there could be a lot of sentimental value attached to that dog, WHICH MEANS Jack could, IDK, be willing to run into a burning house to save it??? Just some food for thought…

this is us
NBC

Our guess is that the Pearsons adopted the dog in this moment — or pretty soon after. In any case, we finally know *where* the dog came from. Now, can we learn its name already? And we need to know what connection, if any, this pup has to Jack’s death. But also, can we learn its name already?! For now, we’re just going to think of it as Sparky Pearson.

And here’s hoping we learn that darn name when This Is Us returns to NBC next Tuesday.

Destination unknown: the new way to book a mystery holiday

Liz Boulter didn’t know she was off to Porto until she got to the airport. All part of Dutch company srprs.me’s new holiday concept

‘He’s picked out restaurants for us already – even knows what he’s going to order.” My friend was talking about an upcoming city break meticulously planned by her husband, and while I could see how poring over restaurant websites might enhance his anticipation of a much-needed holiday, it seemed to kill any idea of exploration, of coming upon something thrilling or unexpected.

So when I saw that Dutch company srprs.me, founded in 2014 in Amsterdam, was launching its “surprise” holiday concept in the UK last month, I was intrigued. The idea is that you choose a type of holiday – city break or backpacking trip – the dates and budget, and srprs.me picks the destination and books flights and accommodation. All you get beforehand is a weather forecast and what time to be at the airport.

The Tumbler: A Montana Mystery Featuring Gabriel Du Pré, Book 11 (Unabridged)

The Tumbler: A Montana Mystery Featuring Gabriel Du Pré, Book 11 (Unabridged)

Gabriel Du Pré, the old Montana fiddler at the center of Peter Bowen’s atmospheric, engrossing series set in the dirty, dusty Montana that’s rarely featured in travel brochures, has a knack for finding trouble. Or rather, trouble has a knack for finding him. There’s a rumor going around that Du Pré and his old sorceror friend Benetsee have come across a parcel containing the lost journals of Lewis and Clark, and outsiders, drawn by the spirit of the legendary explorers, are beginning to invade Toussaint.

Du Pré won’t say whether he’s got the journals or not, preferring his usual routine of cigarettes, a whiskey ditch or two and a few fiddling gigs up and down Montana’s highways to getting involved in this controversy. Benetsee isn’t talking, either, but when a journalist goes a little too far in trying to get the story of the lost journals, and the two men’s friends and family are put squarely in the face of danger, Du Pré doesn’t have much choice but to wade in and set things right.

The Gabriel Du Pré mysteries have become required reading for fans of the vanishing West, and Peter Bowen’s storytelling talent continues to thrive in The Tumbler, a dazzling entry in what has become a classic series.

Mystery Girl: A Novel (Unabridged)

Mystery Girl: A Novel (Unabridged)

When Sam Kornberg’s wife, Lala, walks out on him, he’s an unemployed used-book store clerk and failed experimental novelist with a broken heart. Desperate to win her back, he takes a job as assistant detective to the enigmatic Solar Lonsky, a private eye who might be an eccentric and morbid genius or just a morbidly obese madman.

It’s a simple tail job, following a beautiful and mysterious lady around L.A., but Sam soon finds himself helplessly falling for his quarry and hopelessly entangled in a murder case involving Satanists, succubi, underground filmmakers, Hollywood bigshots, Mexican shootouts, video-store geekery, and sexy doppelgangers from beyond the grave. A case that highlights the risks of hardcore reading and mourns the death of the novel – or perhaps just the decline of Western civilization.

Mystery Girl is a thriller about the dangers of marriage and a detective story about the unsolvable mysteries of love, art, and other people.

Winter at Death’s Hotel: A Louisa Conan Doyle Mystery (Unabridged)

Winter at Death’s Hotel: A Louisa Conan Doyle Mystery (Unabridged)

New York, January 1896: Arthur Conan Doyle, the renowned creator of Sherlock Holmes, arrives at the Britannic Hotel with his wife, Louisa, ready to begin his first American tour. While he prepares his lectures, Louisa becomes mesmerised by this brash, vibrant, dangerous city, especially when a woman’s brutally butchered corpse is found in a Bowery alley and Louisa is convinced from the artist’s sketch in the paper that she’d seen the victim at the hotel.

Arthur is patronisingly sceptical about her womanly “fantasies” but when she sprains her ankle and is forced to remain at the hotel while Arthur goes on tour, Louisa cannot resist pursuing her intuitions. And when more bodies start appearing, she’s convinced that she holds the key to the killings. With the help of the hotel’s hard-bitten detective and an ambitious female news reporter, Louisa starts to piece together a story of madness, murder, and depravity – a story that leads inexorably back to the hotel itself, the strange story of its unique construction, and a madman who is watching her every move.

Mystery Date and Tinder Swipes

Circa 1970s, one of my favorite board games was the 1965 edition of Mystery Date. The object of the Milton Bradley game was to collect three matching cards to form an appropriate outfit, giving the player the chance to open the white plastic door to reveal one of six possible dates. If your outfit didn’t match the date, you closed the door and waited till the next turn.

Marketed to girls 6 to 14, the 1965 game featured a formal date in a white dinner jacket; a geeky bowler in black glasses; a preppy beach date in flip flops; a suave skier; and… the dud, a dangerous looking dude with a five o’clock shadow, sloppy work pants and a smirk — to be avoided at all cost.

The game lost its novelty after a few times so I’d resort to ditching the cards in favor of opening the door over and over, trying to figure out how to get the door to catch a certain way to ensure the handsome guy in the dinner jacket.

Fast forward post-Millennium, dating has become an online version of the popular childhood game. When we swipe left or right on Tinder and other sites, we’re essentially opening that white plastic door with hope we’ll find the guy (or girl) who matches your outfit or lifestyle.

We’ve bypassed the collecting of cards or getting to know the other as we would if we had met at a party or at the Whole Foods takeout counter. In rare instances, there’s a profile to go along with the shirtless photo or posed pic in front of the Eiffel Tower. More times than not, we swipe solely dependent on appearance or image.

When “there’s no one new around you,” we need to change up the parameters — or the equivalent of trying to rig the door.

And of course, there’s also the possible scenario where you show up in a prom dress (or at least a dress and heels) and your date shows up dressed for the beach — or worse yet, the dud!

Zapped: A Regan Reilly Mystery

Zapped: A Regan Reilly Mystery

It''s a hot, humid July night in New York City. Where were you when the lights went out? A New York City resident for many years, Carol Higgins Clark was there during the blackout of 2003. Not surprisingly, she felt that Regan and Jack Reilly should one day share the experience! As Zapped begins, the Reillys return home from a summer weekend to the loft in Tribeca they are in the agonizing process of renovating and expanding. They are looking forward to a quiet supper on their newly acquired rooftop terrace. But it''s not meant to be. While Jack goes to pick up Chinese food, Regan enters their apartment, unaware that a nervous thief, who preceded her by minutes, is hiding in the front closet. A thief who knows about a hidden safe that Regan and Jack have yet to discover. Minutes later, the blackout strikes, and both Reillys are called into action. A new gallery in SoHo, featuring treasured glass sculptures from all over the world, has been burglarized. As head of the NYPD Major Case Squad, Jack oversees several departments. Art theft is one of them. PI Regan hears from her best friend, Kit, who is in Manhattan on business. She''s been abandoned at a comedy club by a colleague from an insurance convention, Georgina Mathieson, who ran out for a cigarette moments before the blackout struck and never came back. Kit gets a call that Georgina is disturbed and dangerous. Fueled by her rage at a college boyfriend who dumped her, Georgina seeks revenge on unsuspecting young blond men. She was last seen getting into a cab outside the club — with a tall blond. Regan heads the search for Georgina and her potential victim. Meanwhile, Lorraine Lily, an almost famous actress, returns to New York City the night of the blackout, after spending three months in England doing a play, and is informed by her estranged husband, Conrad Spreckles, that he''d sold his loft to their next-door neighbors, the Reillys. Lorraine had never told him about the hidden safe she''d had installed in the closet. If she doesn''t get back what''s in there, she''s sure her budding career will be ruined. In Zapped, Clark takes readers on a tour of the city they won''t forget and introduces them to a wonderful cast of colorful, eccentric characters whose stories intersect in precarious and often humorous ways during one very dark and hot summer night.

89 Bags & Counting: My Long Haul to or Tambo International and the Mystery of the Pilfered Baggage

Bringing readers and travelers a fascinating but cautionary account of an airport’s baggage-handling system, Steve Chart shares the many interesting and at times humorous investigations he undertook as a security consultant to the Airports Company South Africa. In 2007 Steve Chart was appointed with the task of assisting in the reduction of baggage pilferage at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa. What Steve soon realized, however, was that in terms of security, the airport wasn’t a vessel with a small leakage problem but a boat on the absolute verge of sinking. He discovered a criminal incursion within the South African travel industry, encountering countless cases of corruption, poor management, and no desire to take responsibility. This personal narrative of his investigations serves as a reminder to the public about protecting their luggage, themselves, and their fellow travelers.
