Every 2018 World Cup Team Name Code, Explained

With the FIFA 2018 World Cup underway, fans less familiar with international soccer may take a look at the score and wonder: Wait, who’s playing in this game?

In most cases, World Cup team names take their scoreboard acronyms, also known as FIFA codes, from the first three letters of their name in English. But there are a handful of exceptions. Here’s a complete list of the FIFA codes for all 32 teams competing in the 2018 World Cup, along with explanations when their origin isn’t immediately clear.

  1. ARG: Argentina
  2. AUS: Australia
  3. BEL: Belgium
  4. BRA: Brazil
  5. COL: Colombia
  6. CRC: Costa Rica. Because Costa Rica’s name is two words long, the FIFA code takes the first letter from each word instead of the first three letters. The second “C” is from the “C” in “Rica.”
  7. CRO: Croatia
  8. DEN: Denmark
  9. EGY: Egypt
  10. ENG: England
  11. FRA: France
  12. GER: Germany
  13. ISL: Iceland. In French, “Iceland” is spelled “Islande.” The FIFA Code refers to the French spelling.
  14. IRN: Iran. The International Olympic Committee country code for Iran is “IRI,” which stands for “Islamic Republic of Iran.” The FIFA code removes the “a” from “Iran,” abbreviating the name to IRN, in line with the country codes set out by the International Organization for Standardization.
  15. JPN: Japan.
  16. KOR: South Korea. FIFA refers to South Korea’s soccer team as the “Korea Republic national football team.” The team code is the first three letters of that name. North Korea’s FIFA code is “PRK” for “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” though only South Korea is playing in this year’s World Cup.
  17. MEX: Mexico
  18. MAR: Morocco. The name refers to the French spelling of Morocco, Maroc.
  19. NGA: Nigeria. The country code “NIG” belongs to Niger, so “NGA” is used to distinguish Nigeria.
  20. PAN: Panama
  21. PER: Peru
  22. POL: Poland
  23. POR: Portugal
  24. RUS: Russia
  25. KSA: Saudi Arabia. KSA stands for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  26. SEN: Senegal
  27. SRB: Serbia
  28. ESP: Spain. ESP comes from the French spelling for Spain, Espagne.
  29. SWE: Sweden.
  30. SUI: Switzerland. The FIFA abbreviation refers to the French spelling of Switzerland, Suisse.
  31. TUN: Tunisia
  32. URU: Uruguay

Miguel Adrover Considers Selling Rights to Name

Miguel Adrover is thousands of miles away from fashion’s epicenters, but he is dialed-in enough to know his name still means something, which is why he may sell it.
Two months after staging “Death With Roasted Peppers,” an other-worldly installation of art and photography in Majorca, the designer-turned-artist is mulling over putting a price tag on the rights to his name. A real flamethrower in New York’s Nineties fashion scene, Adrover shuttered his company after financial troubles and retreated to his homeland to open a bar. Now “for a good amount,” he would be game. “That’s a good name, right?” he asked rhetorically of his signature label in a phone interview Tuesday.
The way Adrover sees it, he has created a philosophy within the industry (that involves upcycling, sustainability, organic production, environmentalism and social consciousness,) and that “should be out there” and put into practice. “It’s still very up-to-date. Vaquera, the designers in New York, made a T-shirt with my face on it. They sent me one of these T-shirts. I was thinking, ‘Imagine, these people have put my face on a top and I’m still alive and here,” he explained. “Yesterday I was supposed to have a Skype interview with American

Why ISF Bank, the Last Black-Owned Bank in Illinois, Is Changing Its Name

Come July, Illinois’ only black-owned bank, ISF Bank, will rebrand and rename itself Groupe Nduom (GN Bank).

The name change, according to Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, the Chairman of ISF Bank, is a move to become a successful, profitable African American-owned bank with a “strong operational discipline, excellent compliance record with our regulators and with a strong customer friendly reputation.”

During the recession of 2008 and the years after, many black-owned banks that were hit hard had to shut down. By 2010, the number of African American-owned banks had dwindled down from the 55 there were in 1994 to 34. Today, the number stands at just 21. Even as Unity Bank expanded to Atlanta, black-owned banks still struggle to keep themselves afloat. The same fate awaited ISF Bank. According to the Chicago Tribune, the bank had been ordered by regulators to boost its capital levels or risk being seized by the government and handed off to another bank.

The Nduom family came to the rescue in 2016. The family, which owns Groupe Nduom, a 5,000-employee conglomerate that spans West Africa and the United Kingdom and included media, hospitality, and banking interests, invested $ 9 million in the bank. And while the investment marks the group’s entry into the United States’ financial services market, Nduom told Black Enterprise that the bank will remain true to the ISF history and heritage.

In this regard, an ISF Heritage/Customer Appreciation Day should be celebrated to ensure continous connection to the community that gave it birth—history, financial management, education, entrepreneurship counseling, etc.,” he wrote in an email.

Nduom said he has informed customers, management ,and his employees that the office of the comptroller of currency has given approval to the bank to change its name. The official name change will take effect in July.

Our family has developed an internationally known banking brand called GN Bank, which started off as a savings and loans company and has grown to become an international bank with more than 300 branches,” he said. “We believe the time has come to bring that brand here to give assurance that this bank is here to stay and will remain African American-owned.”

Since ISF Bank was taken over by the Nduoms, the family has taken ample steps in “focusing on its technology, loan portfolio, and products, and to reconnect it with the neighborhood.” When the bank hosted its National Mom and Pop Day in 2017, 80 small businesses showed up. The bank has also reconnected with the community through faith-based institutions, community groups, and events with small businesses. “We plan to work with leading African American-owned businesses in Chicago to offer entrepreneurship counseling as well,” Nduom told Black Enterprise in 2017.

Besides the name change, Nduom is also setting bold targets for the year:

  • Achieve profit target.
  • Implement performance-based management with specific targets for management and departments.
  • Meet regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare a three-year business plan for significant growth from 2019 through 2021.

Does True Thompson Have a Middle Name?

What’s the rush? Khloe Kardashian has had a whirlwind past month and she’s now dishing on whether or not she and boyfriend Tristan Thompson have decided on a middle name for their baby girl.

The 33-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians star penned a post to her Khloe with a K blog on Friday, May 18, to share the details.

“True doesn’t have a middle name — for now. It was enough pressure to pick a first name!” the Strong Looks Better Naked author wrote. “I have a couple of names in mind, I’m just not completely sure about it yet.”

Kardashian — who welcomed her first child with the NBA star in April — revealed that “I plan to take my time and decide if I’ll give her one at all,” noting that she “can add it at any time and it’s easy to get on the birth certificate.”

The reality star revealed in a post on May 14, that it was a close family member who first suggested the unique name for her daughter.

“My grandma MJ suggested True. She told me it was my great-grandfather’s first name and my grandfather’s middle name,” Kardashian wrote of Kris Jenner’s mom. “It stuck with me for my entire pregnancy and was the only one I couldn’t get out of my head.”

The Good American founder, who currently resides in Cleveland where Thompson, 26, plays for the hometown team, also added that she can’t wait to get back to L.A. so True can finally meet MJ in person!”

Kardashian first announced the baby’s name in a heartfelt post to Instagram just four days after she gave birth. “Our little girl, True Thompson, has completely stolen our hearts and we are overwhelmed with LOVE,” she wrote. “Such a blessing to welcome this angel into the family! Mommy and Daddy loooooove you True!”

Earlier this month, a source told Us Weekly that the couple had decided on the name prior to Kardashian giving birth.

“True had already been picked for a while,” the source told Us. “She went into labor not even knowing the full scope of the cheating so the option of changing her name wasn’t even brought up. It’s too much for one person to deal with during the crazy time.”

As previously reported, news of the basketball player’s infidelity broke just two days prior to the birth of their first child after photos and videos of Thompson cheating began to surface.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Reveal Their Royal Baby Boy’s Name!

Introducing, Prince Louis!

Prince William and Kate Middleton have revealed the name they’ve chosen for their baby boy.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles,” Kensington Palace said in a statement Friday. “The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

While Will and Kate waited a few days before revealing their new baby’s name, that didn’t keep British oddsmakers from making predictions. William also teased his son’s name as he left the hospital. “You’ll find out soon enough,” he said with a smile.

And eagle-eyed fans even spotted a suspicious web page on the royal family’s official website with a URL containing the name Prince Albert (one of the top predictions).

Big brother Prince George was also given a name with special meaning. His full name, George Alexander Louis, was chosen with love and a nod to history.

The name George carries a lot of sentimental meaning to William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, as it was the name picked by her beloved father when he became King George VI in 1936. Alexander is believed to have been picked by the couple to honor the Queen, whose middle name is Alexandra. Louis is likely a tribute to Prince Philip, whose grandfather was Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg. Louis is also part of Prince William’s full name of William Arthur Philip Louis. It also has great meaning to William’s own father, Prince Charles, whose uncle and mentor, Earl Louis Mountbatten, was assassinated by the IRA in 1979.

When it came to choosing a name for their second-born child, Princess Charlotte, the royal parents paid tribute to William’s late mother, Princess Diana, and the almost 3-year-old princess’s full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Will and Kate represented the baby’s grandfather, Prince Charles, by going for the female version of his name. And they included Princess Diana, which was a popular choice with friends and admirers of her legacy. They also added the ultimate nod to great-granny and reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

The baby prince was born on Monday at 11:01 a.m. at 8lbs, 7oz. Just seven hours after giving birth to her third childKate Middleton appeared (in heels!) on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital on Monday evening with Prince William by her side to introduce their new baby boy to the world.

Kate’s younger sister, Pippa, was one of the royal baby’s first visitors. Pippa, who is reportedly expecting her first child with husband James Matthews, arrived at Kensington Palace just one day after the prince was born.

Carole Middleton arrived at Kensington Palace on Wednesday to meet her newest grandson and to check in on daughter, Kate Middleton.

After the royal baby’s birth, Prince Charles released a humorous statement on behalf of himself and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

“We are both so pleased at the news,” Charles said in a statement. “It is a great joy to have another grandchild, the only trouble is I don’t know how I am going to keep up with them.”

Queen Elizabeth celebrated the latest addition to her family with a quick horseback ride through the grounds of Windsor Castle, where she is staying with husband Prince Philip, who is still recovering from hip surgery.

What will Prince William and Kate Middleton name the royal baby?

Everyone’s placing their bets…

The Duchess of Cambridge’s due date is this month and now the whole world is not-so-patiently awaiting the arrival of Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s third baby – set to become fifth in line to the throne.

The Lindo Wing is ready, with barricades set up outside St. Mary’s Hospital in preparation for the Duke and Duchess’ arrival and their 23-strong royal birthing team is prepped and ready to go. That’s three midwives, two obstetricians, three anaesthesiologists, four surgical staff members, two special care staffers, four paediatricians, one lab technician for blood tests, and three or four managers.

The royal couple is said to be announcing the news that Kate is going into labour on Instagram for baby number 3, so until we get a social media update, royal fans have been busying themselves speculating what will happen after the birth.

Aside from predicting who the couple will appoint their new baby’s god parents (with fans campaigning for Meghan Markle to be god mother), the public’s attention has focused mainly on the royal baby name, with a lot of people placing bets.

What will the new royal baby name be?

We won’t know the new royal baby name until after his or her arrival, but judging by the bookies, there are some top favourites to bet on. It’s hard to know where to put your money yet, as the baby’s gender is still unknown, despite some believing that Prince William may have let the gender slip earlier this week, overheard joking that he wanted to name the baby ‘Jack’ after an Aston Villa player.

According to the multiple sources, the most likely royal baby names are Philip for a boy and a toss up between Mary and Alice for a girl. All the names are traditionally royal, with a number of past Princesses and in some cases Queens bearing the names Alice and Mary, and Philip being a tribute to Prince William’s grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Did Wells Fargo Open Fake Accounts in Your Name? You Can Still File a Claim

If a Wells Fargo employee opened an unauthorized account in your name, you still have time to claim your slice of a $ 142 million settlement.

The settlement came in April 2017 after customers filed a class-action lawsuit against the bank accusing its employees of creating millions of fake accounts without their permission or knowledge.

The initial Feb. 3 claim deadline has been extended to July 7, the settlement website states. According to the LA Times, the deadline was extended because Wells Fargo failed to notify all current and past account holders of the settlement.

This class action applies to Wells Fargo customers who had unsecured credit cards, unsecured lines of credit, or consumer and small-business checking or savings accounts opened or applied for in their names without their permission.

Customers who obtained identity-theft protection from Wells Fargo between May 1, 2002 and April 20, 2017 are also eligible.

The cash you get from the class action will include a refund for fees you paid on unauthorized accounts and compensation if your credit was harmed.

Any money left in the fund after paying the benefits will be paid out as additional compensation.

If you received a claim ID in the mail or your email, you can log in and file online. If you don’t have a claim number, check the box that says “I do not have the information needed to login” and continue with the online form.

If you need help or have questions, call 866-431-8549 to speak with a claims administrator customer service representative, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST.

‘Pitch Perfect 3’ Stars Reflect on Franchise’s Future and That Icky Band Name

Pitch Perfect 3 is the third film in the popular comedy franchise, but will it be the last?

For stars Chrissie Fit and Hana Mae Lee, who play Flo and Lilly, respectively, the series has run its course, but they’d be open to returning.

“The [ending] montage really felt it was the end,” Fit told FANDOM. “People really love these characters and want to see what’s next for them. Maybe Flo [who becomes an entrepreneur] will finance their next tour.”

Lee, who’s been part of the franchise since the original 2012 film, agrees. “I love playing Lily,” she explained. “If there is [a fourth film], I’m down and I feel people would be excited. If there isn’t, I felt the third one was a really nice ending.”

The Musical Numbers

Pitch Perfect 3 USO
Lee says they got their routines down easier in this film.

Lee joked that she might be getting a little too old to do the intense song and dance routines.

“All of them were challenging because my body is getting older,” she said with a laugh. “You know you’re getting old when you’re being shown dance moves and you’re like, ‘Hmm, I’m going to have back issues and neck issues later.’”

Still, she admitted that the actors’ experience from the previous films was helpful, especially with new director Trish Sie, who comes from a music video background. “We got the dance moves more quickly this time around,” Lee stated. “It’s in our veins.”

Fit, who joined in Pitch Perfect 2, said performing Britney Spears’ “Toxic” was the most challenging.

The scene is the climax of the movie, and the girls find themselves held on a yacht at gunpoint by gangsters.

“There were so many elements to it. The action sequence, dancing, and singing for our lives,” Fit explained. Luckily, the shoot took place on a sound stage instead of open waters.

“Production actually built a yacht on a sound stage which was nuts. They had this huge tank with lukewarm bath water, which was better than jumping into the ocean,” Fit admitted.

“That whole filming day was really fun,” she continued. “We got to be action stars for a minute and afterward you were in a pool with all your best friends. We were playing games, synchronized swimming. It was one of my favorite moments. It felt like we were all kids again.

Many more behind-the-scenes clips can be found on the Pitch Perfect 3 home release, out this week. Other highlights include a gag reel and an intimate and emotional look at the final performance.

That Icky Band Name

Pitch Perfect 3 Evermoist
Openly gay actress Ruby Rose fronts a fictional band called Evermoist.

Speaking of funny moments, FANDOM had to ask both actresses about the name of guest star Ruby Rose’s band. The all-girl band was named Evermoist.

“It just sounds so gross,” Fit responded. “Automatic cringe from me. I think Rebel Wilson is the only one who could hear ‘Evermoist’ and improv seven jokes right after. She started talking about being ‘never moist, ever again’ [laughs].”

Adds Lee, “I was like ‘what is that?’” upon hearing the name. “What’s funny is that it can be real. There could be a really successful band named Evermoist in this world right now.”

And while the girls of Evermoist battled the Barden Bella alums, Fit said the film’s legacy is its empowering message.

“This is how female friendships are,” she explained. “It’s not catty, it’s not divisive. We are stronger together!”

Pitch Perfect 3 is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand, and via the all-new digital movie app MOVIES ANYWHERE.

Khloe Kardashian going with T name for tot

OHMYGOSSIP — Khloe Kardashian is planning on picking a name for her daughter that begins with the letter T.
The 33-year-old reality star is expecting her first child, a baby girl, with her boyfriend Tristan Thompson, and although she still hasn’t settled on a moniker for her impending arrival, she has revealed she’s thinking of going with something that starts with a T, so that she can take after her dad.
Khloe and her sisters – Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall, and Kylie – all have names beginning with K, and whilst the blonde beauty hasn’t completely abandoned the idea of sticking with that tradition, she is thinking of starting her own by switching to a T.
When a Twitter user asked if she was going to pick a moniker beginning with a K, Khloe replied: “I think a T but a K is an option as well. That’s as far as I know.”
Khloe’s mother Kris Jenner picked K names for her first three daughters – whom she had with her late ex-husband Robert Kardashian, with whom she also had son Rob – to match their surname Kardashian, and kept up the tradition for her youngest daughters Kendall and Kylie, who were born to her second husband Caitlyn Jenner – who was known as Bruce Jenner at the time.
It’s thought Khloe will opt for a T moniker as her daughter will likely have Tristan’s surname, and her tot will then keep up the alliteration tradition.
It comes after the ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star revealed before she knew the gender of her tot that she would call her baby Tristan Jr. if she were to have a boy, but admitted she was struggling with a girl’s name.
She said: “[Naming the baby] is the hardest. I think if it’s a boy I’ll go with Junior. Tristan Jr. For a girl, I don’t even know where to begin. I think I want a K, or a T. For Tristan.”
Khloe has often talked of her struggles to come up with a moniker for her daughter, as she previously took to Twitter to bemoan her indecisiveness.
When one fan told her they couldn’t wait to find out what she names her baby, Khloe replied: “Ugh me too!! lol I can barely decide what I want to eat. Let alone name a baby (sic)”

Who is Marilyn Manson, what does he look like without makeup and is his name really Brian?

MARILYN Manson is one of the world’s most controversial musicians, who’s best known for his outrageous stage personality and image as the lead singer of the band Marilyn Manson.

But, what else do we know about the rocker, and what’s his real name? Let’s get the lowdown…

Marilyn Manson is a shock rocker, whose songs became hits in the '90s

Who is Marilyn Manson?

Marilyn Manson’s real name is a little less glamorous than his stage name – he’s called Brian Hugh Warner.

He was born in Canton, Ohio, on 5 January, 1969 – that makes him 49.

He’s a singer, songwriter, musician, composer, actor, painter, author, and former music journalist.

Manson – whose stage name was formed by combining and juxtaposing the names of actress Marilyn Monroe and criminal Charles Manson – is best known for his ’90s records Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals.

He has previously revealed he has trademarked his famous name.

He said: “I trademarked the name ‘Marilyn Manson’ the same way as Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. It’s not a stage name. It’s not my legal name … Marilyn Manson is owned by Brian Warner, my real name.”

Aside from music, Manson has also acted. He made his movie in 1997, appearing in David Lynch’s Lost Highway.

He’s also appeared in Rose McGowan‘s 1999 film Jawbreaker; The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things; Rise; The Hire: Beat The Devil.

He also claimed that he began his career as a watercolour painter in 1999 when he made five-minute concept pieces and sold them to drug dealers.

What does Marilyn Manson look like without makeup?

Marilyn is rarely seen in public without makeup on. However, he did sport a makeup-free face when he had to go to court in 2001 (pictured above).

He has previously described his love affair with makeup, saying it all stems from childhood.

He revealed to Fader: “My mom used to put her wigs and lipstick on me when I was little. I have one weird picture of me as a toddler with an unlit cigarette in my mouth, wearing her blonde wig and a diaper, sitting on the couch. Wonder how I ended up here.

“I suppose my fascination with makeup comes from me having a great imagination and not being able to contain it just to a piece of paper or a piece of music. When I was a kid, I used to do the KISS makeup with watercolour paints.

“I was into KISS mostly because I was told not to listen to it in Christian school. But Alice Cooper and Bowie were more important to me. KISS wore too much of a mask; it was too much kabuki.

“I wanted to be seen, I just didn’t want to be seen the same way that I was. Ziggy Stardust first led me to shave off my eyebrows. People look at you trying to figure out what’s missing or wrong, and you can do a lot more with makeup when your eyebrows are out of the way.

“In the beginning, I was never intending to be androgynous in the sense that people thought. I wasn’t trying to look like a girl; I was hiding something. I had a really bad complexion as a teenager, but I wasn’t insecure: I tried to look worse. I liked to put lipstick on my teeth because it was always something that people didn’t like to have.”

“And I was like, ‘Wow, you are a jerk,’” she joked on the show. “Sorry, heaven forbid he do what you do. So incredible.” She went on to say that picking out a boy’s name is “really tough,” and she worries she won’t be able to settle on one. DeGeneres, of course, had some funny ideas—watch the clip below to hear them.

No Love Lost: Kandi Burruss Shows Love to the New Xscap3 After Name Change

While Kandi Burruss joined Xscape groupmates Tameka “Tiny” Cottle-Harris, La Tocha Scott and Tamika Scott for their comeback tour, the reality star chose to sit-out a reunion album, leaving the threesome to forge ahead without her.

This led some fans to believe there was still bad blood between the southern songstresses, but the current Broadway star had nothing but well wishes for the group that has re-branded themselves as Xscap3.

“I want to send my love to my girls Xscap3 and congratulate them on the moves [they’re] making!” she wrote on Instagram. “I want everybody to know that there is no drama. It is still love with us. I support what they’re doing with the new music & I want y’all to do the same.”

Burruss currently stars as Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago, one of the longest-running Broadway musicals of all time, from Jan. 15 through March 11 at the Ambassador Theatre in New York City.

Kylie Jenner revealed Stormi’s last name, and it’s not what we were expecting

After Kylie Jenner announced the birth of her first child, we had to make up for lost time. There’s so much to catch up on! We missed out on nine months of pregnancy updates, cravings, baby shower gifts, and baby bump pictures. Fortunately, Kylie is making our job easy. She made a YouTube video about her pregnancy so we could catch up on what we missed. Now that Kylie and Travis Scott’s little bundle of joy is here, she seems ready to share more about her journey to motherhood with us. And she’s getting right to it. On Tuesday, February 6th, Kylie shared the first photo of her baby on Instagram. Kylie also shared her baby’s name: Stormi. The picture’s original caption simply read “stormi” with a smiling baby emoji. But she later updated it to include Stormi’s last name: “stormi webster.”

You might be wondering, Whose last name is Webster? And the answer is Travis Scott’s. Yep, Travis Scott’s real name is Jacques Webster. Many wondered if Stormi would take Kylie’s last name and go by Stormi Jenner. As far as we know, Kylie and Travis have no plans to get married at the moment. But Stormi’s last name is Webster, just like her father’s.

Introducing: Stormi Webster!

stormi webster 👼🏽

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

We’re pretty sure that she’s going to go by “Stormi Webster” and not “stormi webster.” But hey, you never know. The Kardashian/Jenner fam is famous for their naming conventions. Maybe giving kids all-lowercase names is the trend of the next generation of Jenners.

The name Stormi Scott would be pretty cute. But Stormi Webster has a beautiful ring to it too.

Welcome to the world, Stormi Webster! Now, how long until there’s a Kylie Cosmetics “Stormi” shade? Fingers crossed she’ll bless us with an entire “Stormi” collection!

The Surprisingly Complicated Meaning of Chicago West’s Name

When Kanye and Kim Kardashian West announced on Friday that the name of their new baby girl is Chicago West, the meaning of the name likely seemed clear to fans: Chicago is Kanye West’s hometown.

West frequently mentions the city of Chicago in his music, and his song “Homecoming” is about the city. Chicago West was born on Monday via surrogate. But it turns out that the actual meaning of “Chicago” — beyond being the name of the Windy City — has an interesting history, giving Rumi Carter some company in the celebrity-baby-name trivia space.

The origin story behind the word that would become Chicago West’s first name was debated by historians for some time and involved Native American dialects, odd smells and botany.

Some of the story is fairly clear. Most of the competing theories that have floated around over time have a similar background, detailing that the word “Chicago” — like many American place names — comes from a similarly pronounced or spelled name in a Native American language. The word first lent itself to the Chicago River, with the city officially incorporated in 1837.

One 1890 reference book lists a number of possible derivations for the word, including the Pottowattamie words “Shecaugo” and “Choccago,” meaning “playful waters” and “destitute” respectively, as well as the words “Chicag,” “Chicagowunz” and “Chicago,” all relating to leeks or onions. Also mentioned is the Indian Chief Chikagou. A fort called “Chicagou” is also cited as being listed in French missionary Louis Hennepin’s accounts of the area as well. Another reference book from around the turn of the 20th century adds to those theories that the origin word could refer to a skunk or skunk weed, which is a plant known for its odor, or the Pottowattamie word for “destitute.” The text also brings up the Chicago River and garlic once more, citing that an account from 1695 refers to “the River of Garlic.”

Get your history fix in one place: sign up for the weekly TIME History newsletter

And that garlic theory is the prevailing one today.

The precise plant to which the word refers was Allium tricoccum, also known commonly as ramp, argues John F. Swenson in a 1991 article on the etymology of “Chicago” for the Illinois Historical Journal. As Swenson explains, the earliest historical documentation of European exploration of the area comes from a 17th century French expedition, the records of which contain detailed descriptions of the plant in question, known as chicagoua in a language of the Illinois people. Those French records also include references to the word being used to the describe the place where it grew, not just the plant itself. In later years, the meaning would be confused with other plants of the Allium genus, and it is likely that linguistic confusion over descriptions of the plant’s odor led to the common misconception that “Chicago” translates to “bad smell.”

It was later, once the Illinois people were no longer present, Swenson notes, that the non-botanical suggestions for the meaning of “Chicago” began to pop up — including the theory, spread purely for promotional purposes, that “Chicago” means “great.” But, the author adds jokingly, people who love good food should appreciate the name “Chicago” for its original meaning.

However, Chicago West likely won’t have to worry about just where the name comes from. Her family has made it known that they will call her Chi for short.

Mark Wahlberg just donated $1.5m to the Time’s Up fund in Michelle Williams’ name

‘I 100% support the fight for fair pay’

michelle williams and mark wahlberg

The past few months have seen women and men, particularly in Hollywood, calling out the mistreatment of women and promoting gender equality.

As a result, the Time’s Up campaign was founded this month, with its legal defence fund offering support to victims of sexual harassment, abuse or assault in the workplace.

Celebrities from Reese Witherspoon to Ewan McGregor took to the red carpet of the Golden Globes last week to promote the Time’s Up campaign, and the movement seems to have extended past awards season.

The latest high profile figure to call for change is actor Mark Wahlberg who just announced his plans to donate $ 1.5 million to the Time’s Up defence fund in actress Michelle Williams’ name.

The pair have just filmed All the Money in the World together and recently made headlines after they were forced to reshoot scenes following actor Kevin Spacey’s removal from the project after facing sexual harassment accusations last year.

Showcasing Hollywood’s shocking pay disparity, Wahlberg was given $ 1.5 million for the reshoot while his female co-star was paid just $ 80 a day.

Understandably the public wasn’t happy with the news and neither it seems was Mark Wahlberg who took to Twitter to voice his outrage and support his co-star.

‘Over the last few days my reshoot fee for All the Money in the World has become an important topic of conversation,’ the actor announced in a statement. ‘I 100% support the fight for fair pay and I’m donating the $ 1.5M to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams’ name.’

Responding to the news, Michelle Williams also released a statement.

‘If we truly envision an equal world, it takes equal effort and sacrifice,’ she announced. ‘Today is one of the most indelible days of my life because of Mark Wahlberg, WME and a community of women and men who share in this accomplishment. Anthony Rapp, for all the shoulders you stood on, now we stand on yours.’

Time is definitely up.

Ed Westwick vows to clear name

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Westwick has vowed to clear his name after being accused of rape by a second woman.
The former ‘Gossip Girl’ star insisted Aurélie Wynn’s account that she was overpowered and sexually assaulted by him over three years ago is “provably untrue” and he would never do anything so “vile and horrific”.
Ed – who earlier in the week denied Kristina Cohen’s allegations against him – wrote on Twitter: “It is disheartening and sad to me that as a result of two unverified and provably untrue social media claims, there are some in this environment who could ever conclude I have had anything to do with such vile and horrific conduct.
“I have absolutely not, and am cooperating with the authorities so that they can clear my name as soon as possible.”
Aurélie had spoken out on Facebook about her alleged ordeal, which she claimed took place at the home of the 30-year-old star and was “similar” to what Kirstina claimed had happened to hre.
And the former actress then went on to claim that her boyfriend at the time, Mark Salling – who last month was pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography – blamed her for the alleged offence and broke up with her because of her claims.
She rounded off her post by thanking Kristina for coming forward to accuse Ed as she said she wouldn’t have spoken out if it wasn’t for her.
She wrote: “I am so incredibly thankful all of this is finally coming to light and that there is justice in the world. I believe you Kristina Cohen and thank you for speaking up so eloquently and really encompassing what young female actresses have to go through at the hands of men like Ed Westwick. Without you I would not have had the strength to speak up publicly about my ordeal. #metoo (sic)”
Ed previously denied Kristina’s allegation.
He said earlier this week: “I do not know this woman. I have never forced myself in any manner, on any woman. I certainly have never committed rape.”

Tucker Carlson: Women Accusing Halperin Should Name Themselves

Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Thursday questioned why women who accuse men of sexual harassment get to remain anonymous, proclaiming on Tucker Carlson Tonight that “American justice” is not supposed to work that way. In a discussion with radio host Tammy Bruce over a series of recent sexual harassment allegations against journalist Mark Halperin, Carlson noted that “a lot of the accusations are coming anonymously.” “That doesn’t mean they’re not true. But one of the keys to American justice, I think, has always been you get to face your accuser. You get to know what you’re being accused of and you get to know who’s charging it. And that seems to not be enforced anymore,” he said. He went on to question how news organizations have been covering recent sexual misconduct scandals, which have now hit not only big names in Hollywood but also prominent figures in the media world. “I wonder why news organizations sort of only print half the story,” he said.

Ahead of iPhone X release, Apple gets hit with a lawsuit over the ‘Animoji’ name

iPhone X Features

Ahead of the upcoming iPhone X release, Apple has been hit with a lawsuit regarding one of the device’s more intriguing new features. According to a report from The Recorder, Enrique Bonansea is suing Apple for infringing upon his Animoji trademark. Animoji, if you recall, is the name Apple gave to the iPhone X’s animated emoji feature wherein the device’s TrueDepth camera system tracks a user’s facial expressions and applies them to an emoji in real-time.

The suit was filed earlier this week by Enrique Bonansea who claims to have registered the Animoji trademark with the USPTO in 2015. What’s more, Bonansea has had a messaging app in the App Store with the Animoji branding going all the way back to 2014. According to the suit, Apple’s decision to go ahead and use the Animoji name in spite of all this is a “textbook case of willful, deliberate trademark infringement.”

For Valentine’s Day, Stop (Overspending) in the Name of Love!

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is the official holiday for celebrating love. However, because it’s almost exclusively a commercial holiday, it is also about spending money. This combination often leads to bad money decisions, because it encourages emotional spending out of love, obligation, and even guilt.

Before you get caught up, listen up: Love is not a legitimate excuse for irresponsible spending. So, choose to avoid these unloving financial behaviors for Valentine’s Day:

Do Not Spend More Than You Can Afford

Being overly generous when money is tight does nothing good for the giver or the receiver. More importantly, don’t get caught up in trying to impress your friends and relatives. Honesty, including financial honesty, is key to any healthy relationship. So, don’t pretend to have money you don’t have by playing the “big spender” role.

Do Not Use Love as a Justification for Emotional Spending

Love is not about making financial decisions with your heart, instead of your head. Even though emotional spending can give a temporary high, it can also lead to guilt, buyer’s remorse, and even resentment between partners. Many a relationship have been destroyed by this cycle.

Do Not Blackmail Your Sweetheart Into Spending

Never pressure anyone to purchase financially irresponsible Valentine’s Day gifts, in order to “prove” their love to you, or worse, to impress your friends and family.

Giving and receiving as an expression of love is not about price tags, but about meaning. The most meaningful gift does not have to cost an arm and a leg, and an expensive gift without meaning will be soon forgotten, on top of being a waste of money.

To be financially responsible without coming off as cheap or insensitive, take my advice:

Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute!

Desperation or impulse spending nearly always results in spending more money than intended, or getting a less than ideal gift—or worse, both. People can tell when you didn’t put thought into their gift, no matter how much you spend at the last minute. The key to getting the best products and services for the lowest prices is to plan your purchases and shop for them in advance. This also gives you more options, including shopping online, with enough time to order items for arrival before Valentine’s Day, without incurring hefty shipping charges.

Budget for Valentine’s Day, as You Would for All Gift-Giving Occasions

If you can, take the time to get buy-in, and manage the expectations of your Valentine. Openly discuss what you can and can’t afford in advance, and set mutually agreed upon spending limits that fit into your respective budgets.

Use the Most Powerful Aphrodisiac: Your Imagination

Instead of a big expensive purchase, think of a thoughtful, affordable gift, along with romantic ways to make the day special. Invest your time and attention instead of more money. Often, overspending is really just an expensive cop-out to avoid investing genuine emotion and true meaning into Valentine’s Day.
Focus on four areas:

  1. Things you can personally do for your sweetheart.
  2. Things you can do together.
  3. Things you can make for your Valentine.
  4. Places you can go together.

For example, gift your partner with a spa day, with you personally giving the mani/pedi, massage, shampoo, and several hours of your undivided attention. If you are artistically inclined, compose a song, or dedicate a handmade book of poetry or an original painting to your Valentine. How about enrolling in a class together, such as ballroom dancing, which could enhance your sense of teamwork and ensure you are in each others arms at least once a week. Of course, this kind of stuff will take thought, planning, preparation, and time (see “Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute!” above) to pull off.

The Bottom Line: Spending irresponsibly is no way to say “I love you,” even on Valentine’s Day. No one who really loves you would want you to do it. With advance planning and communication, you can have Valentine’s Day romance without blowing your finances.

Coach To Change It’s Company Name To Tapestry And People Are Upset

Handbag company Coach is making a couple of changes, including the name of their products. On Wednesday, the company announced their new name will be Tapestry, Inc. The 76-year old company also serves as home to Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman.

This news didn’t hold well with many of the company’s supporters; some claimed the name doesn’t identify with leather handbags at all.  In addition to the 2 percent decrease in company shares after the announcement, folks took to Twitter to express their disdain with the news.

While the Manhattan-based company is changing it’s name, the “Coach” label on the handbags will remain. The official name change will go into effect October 31st.

“This Is Us” just explained where Kate’s mystery dog came from, but we still need to know its name

“This Is Us” just explained where Kate’s mystery dog came from, but we still need to know its name

The moment was brief, but This Is Us just answered one of our *burning* questions in tonight’s episode! If you haven’t seen Season 2, Episode 3, “Deja Vu,” now might be a good time to skedaddle because #SPOILERS. Last chance, because we’re about to get into plot details…

This week’s This Is Us saw Rebecca take Jack out on a romantic date to try to work through some of their marital difficulties.

She makes a move, but he rebuffs her advances so the pair head back to their home pretty quickly. Once there, Jack tells Rebecca that it’s been difficult to open up to her as of late, but that he wants to keep talking to her. Rebecca throws their burgers into the grass, and follows him back into the car so they can continue their date.

That may seem like a little detail about the burgers, but as we’ve learned time and time again…there are NO small details on This Is Us. That burger attracts the attention of a dog, who starts chowin’ down. And not just any dog. No, no, no, this is the dog we saw Kate clutching at the end of the Season 2 premiere. This is the dog that appeared out of nowhere, but is a potential clue about Jack’s death.

“Hey, looks like someone got to enjoy the burgers tonight,” Jack says upon finding the pup.

Rebecca wonders if it’s a stray, and Jack picks the dog up. It looks like love at first sight if you ask us, which means there could be a lot of sentimental value attached to that dog, WHICH MEANS Jack could, IDK, be willing to run into a burning house to save it??? Just some food for thought…

this is us
NBC

Our guess is that the Pearsons adopted the dog in this moment — or pretty soon after. In any case, we finally know *where* the dog came from. Now, can we learn its name already? And we need to know what connection, if any, this pup has to Jack’s death. But also, can we learn its name already?! For now, we’re just going to think of it as Sparky Pearson.

And here’s hoping we learn that darn name when This Is Us returns to NBC next Tuesday.

The Bachelor in Chaos: Producers ‘Panic’ as They Struggle to Name a Suitor, Source Says

Who’s the next Bachelor? Well, fans aren’t the only ones in the dark — franchise executives are also scrambling to come up with their next leading man, a source tells PEOPLE.

The Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss shocked his followers Wednesday by tweeting that fan favorite Peter Kraus — the Wisconsin personal trainer who couldn’t bring himself to propose to a frustrated Rachel Lindsay on The Bachelorette last season — is once again out of the running.

“Unfortunately, Peter probably will not be #TheBachelor …” he tweeted.

Where does that leave producers?

“They are in a full-blown panic mode,” the insider tells PEOPLE. “Peter was honestly never their first choice; they’re still mad at him because of the whole Rachel situation. But they knew he’s who the fans wanted. And the fact that they went to Peter even after they’d initially said they wouldn’t? That let Peter know he had a ton of power going into this situation.”
ABC had no comment.
Just as Kraus was unwilling to compromise on his core values for a picture-perfect ending with Lindsay, the source suggests he’s playing hard to get with production.
“Suddenly it was like they needed him more than he needs them — he didn’t think he was going to get it, anyway, so he doesn’t care if it all goes away again. He’s not bending on what he wants,” the source says. “Really, the producers feel like ANY demands coming from Peter are a bit much; they always think everybody should be falling all over themselves to get this honor. And Peter just doesn’t play that way. He doesn’t play by any of the rules — if he did, he’d have just proposed to Rachel even though he knew it wouldn’t work out, and then broken up with her a few months later, like Nick just did. But he couldn’t be forced into it.”
The source adds: “That might have also been a sticking point: the show likely would want him to promise to propose at the end — Nick definitely had to say he would go through with it — and it’s highly possible Peter just refused to promise, just like he refused to go ahead with Rachel.”
“They have nowhere to turn now,” the source says, pointing to Fleiss’ previous tweet that no one from JoJo Fletcher’s season of The Bachelorette would become the new suitor; furthermore, Luke Pell “hasn’t been contacted,” Robby Hayes‘ reputation took a dive during Bachelor in Paradise, Wells Adams “isn’t leading man caliber,” and Eric Bigger “doesn’t have the charisma and attitude you need.” (Last week, Bigger confirmed to PEOPLE Now he hadn’t been approached.)
“Honestly, at this point, don’t be surprised if they start begging some single B-list actors,” the source says. “This could be a throwback to the Charlie O’Donnell and Jesse Palmer seasons, all over again.”

Uber is axing one of its creepiest features in the name of privacy

uber privacy

Despite all the horribly negative things that have sullied the Uber brand over the past couple of years, the company remains standing today, and now it’s got a brand new CEO to help drag it back from the ledge. But if Uber really wants a shot at long-term, sustained success, it”ll have to stop stepping on its own toes and get smart about user privacy. To that end, the ride hailing company is reportedly axing its app’s ability to track your movements in the moments after your trip has concluded.

This website will notify you if there’s unclaimed money in your name

If you’ve been following money expert Clark Howard for a while, you’ve probably heard him talk about billions of dollars in unclaimed money — and how some of it may be yours!

I recently shared how I searched my name on MissingMoney.com and got a check for $ 36.77 from a state where I used to live.

Read more: Save $ 1,000+ with this 12-week money challenge

Credit Karma can help you find missing money!

How is that possible? When a business owes you money but can’t get it to you, they will turn it over to the state, which will hold the money and keep a record that it belongs to you.

You can usually collect the money that’s owed to you pretty easily — like I did — but you have to know where to look.

Credit Karma has just launched Credit Karma Unclaimed Money, a free feature to help Americans in the following states get their money back — no finder’s fees or charges.

California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin

Simply enter your name and state (current and previous) on Credit Karma’s website to get started.

Unclaimed money from bank accounts, insurance policies, rental and utility deposits, safe deposit boxes and other places make up an estimated $ 40 billion sitting with state governments.

Here are just a few examples of unclaimed money:

  • A check you forgot to cash
  • Money left in an inactive bank account
  • A rebate check mailed to an old address

If your state isn’t on Credit Karma’s list, you can also search at MissingMoney.com — the site I used — or find a link to every state’s unclaimed property program at Unclaimed.org.

To collect money that’s in your name, you’ll have to fill out a form with the state and provide proof of identity.

Credit Karma says if you have a free account with them, they’ll proactively send a notification if there are any future matches for you in the states its program works with.

Bowing to pressure, Trump denounces hate groups by name

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bowing to pressure from right and left, President Donald Trump condemned white supremacist groups by name on Monday, declaring “racism is evil” after two days of public equivocation and internal White House debate over the deadly race-fueled clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia.

President Donald Trump Finally Calls Out Charlottesville White Nationalists By Name

In the wake of the hateful protest in Charlottesville that turned bloody and left one woman dead, President Trump has finally placed blame by name.

For a politician who is so quick to specifically address all who oppose him, the POTUS was noticeably ambiguous when he commented on the violence. ‘We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides.”

After much scrutiny from the left, right and everyone with a drop of common sense, Trump took a firmer position saying “Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the K.K.K., neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

For Merck’s chief executive, Kenneth C. Frazier, it was too little too late. The noted pharmaceutical CEO resigned from the president’s American Manufacturing Council on Monday citing that the death of 32-year old Heather Heyer was not committed by “many sides“.

“America’s leaders must honor our fundamental views by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal,” he said via a tweet posted from Merck’s official Twitter Account.

Naturally, the president took to Twitter to address Frazier withdrawing from the committee stating “Now that Ken Frazier of Merck Pharma has resigned from President’s Manufacturing Council, he will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!”.

This is not the first time Donald’s stance or lack thereof has left his appointed business leaders to flee. So far Elon Musk of Tesla, Bob Iger of Disney and Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs have all exited presidential councils.

Also, we are curious to know why no one has mentioned that Trump Winery, the largest vineyard in Virginia, is also located in Charlottesville?

Lifelong Packers Fan Had The Perfect Reason To Take His Wife’s Last Name

The stars certainly aligned when lifelong Green Bay Packers fan Ryan Holtan-Murphy met his future wife, Marie Packer.

A self-described diehard fan, Holtan-Murphy has been obsessed with the football team since before he could even walk. So when it came time to say “I do,” Holtan-Murphy knew there was one decision he didn’t need to think twice about. His Packers pride would become part of his identity once and for all.

“Honestly it was never even a decision!” Ryan said of taking his bride’s last name. “I love her and love the Packers, so it was a no-brainer. Marie very graciously agreed!”

“Marie’s family is bemused but happy to let me join the party,” he continued. “My family lives in Wisconsin and is completely unsurprised.”

Writing over email from his honeymoon in Turks and Caicos, Ryan recalled the couple’s June 17 nuptials in Chicago, Illinois, which included some key Packers-related details. The groom surprised his bride with a green and gold suit and other decorative accents.

“Marie knew about some of the Packers decorations, but had no idea about the Packers suit,” he said. “I wasn’t sure she’d agree to go through with it if she knew. We also referenced the team in our vows: ’I promise to be a good teammate, just like the other Packers…”

The team hasn’t reached out to the couple, though Miller Lite, the Green Bay Packers’ official beer sponsor, sent some beverages to the wedding and the newlyweds’ home. They also gave the pair two tickets to every Packers home game this season.

Check out more photos from the wedding by JPP Studios below.

Fifth Harmony Explains Why They Didn’t Change Name After Camila Cabello Left

It’s been six months since Camila Cabello decided to leave Fifth Harmony after four-and-a-half years together as a girl group. Immediately after the departure, questions were raised by fans: Will they get a new member? Will they change their name? Well, 5H says they’re sticking with the name and revealed who they consider their newest fifth member.

“It was obviously a thought, because it was a prevalent thing that there’s 4 of us not 5. Regardless, we were all very united in the fact that we didn’t want to change the name,” said bandmate Lauren Jauregui to MTV News. “Fifth Harmony is the name we grew up with and we worked for and it’s our brand. It’s who we are. It’s our entire moments. It’s what we spent five years on.”

It doesn’t seem like they’ll be adding a new member as they already filled the spot in a special way. “The fans named us Fifth Harmony,” Dinah Jane Hansen said. “And now they’re the fifth member.” Aw!

Fifth Harmony released their first single as a foursome earlier this month titled “Down,” featuring Gucci Mane. When Cabello was asked if she listened to the song, she admitted to catching some of it and sent positive vibes to her former group. “I’ve heard some snippets of it. I haven’t had a chance to hear the whole thing, but I thought it was pretty cool,” she told AMP Radio. “I wish the best for them and I’m sure they’re going to kill it and I’m super happy making my own music.”

Cabello is set to release her solo album The Hurting, The Healing, The Love this fall.

Your Next Steps Should One Of Bey And Jay’s Twins Be Given Your Name

Hi. I’m sure you’ve heard the news: Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s twins are here. And now we play the waiting game until the first official photos are released and the baby names are announced.

But what happens if one of the tiny Beys has your name? I’m glad I pretended you asked, because this is where things get serious.

Here’s where you go from there. You may want to sit down for this.

1. Accept that you are no longer you.

At least not in the way you once knew yourself. Over the course of your life, your name gains a reputation to those around you. The mention of this name evokes a strong character impression for people, and that’s something you earn over years of interactions.

But this is all gone. Beyoncé has need of your name.

2. Choose a new name.

Whether you accept it or not, your name has vacated the spiritual residence once known as you. It’s never coming back. But don’t look at this as an end, think of it as a beginning. A new beginning. Not many people get to choose their own name. But that’s exactly what you’ll be doing. Because your name no longer exists for you.

Eventually though, people will learn this new name as they did your previous one, and you’ll once again become a whole person. Which, at the moment, you are not.

3. Choose a new home.

“Home” is a concept you will have to get reacquainted with. You don’t have to physically move away from your current home, but it will never be the same. The moment those mini Beys are given names, and assuming one of those names is the same as yours, you become spiritually homeless. Your essence is siphoned away. Slowly, your familiars will begin to fade and the place you once called home will become alien.

Finding a new place in the universe won’t be easy, but fate has decided that you’re strong enough. Years down the road, perhaps even decades, your belief in “home” will become comfortable again. And though you’ll often wake violently in the night trying to recapture images or ideas of what you once were, some semblance of peace will be yours.

4. Make a new life for yourself.

Take a good, long look in the mirror. The person you see should look like a stranger to you. This is the new you. This mammalian husk is your home now. Within this human suit is where you will be born again. You’ll form new bonds with people and make new memories in the world. Your previous life will be a distant star over the horizon, to all intents and purposes out of reach, but still a tiny twinkling reminder of an infinitely shifting universe.

5. **Alternate plan of action should Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s twins’ names somehow match your first and middle name.**

Your tenure in this universe has completed. It’s time to phase out of this reality and into the next. Good luck on your journey, cosmic adventurer.

American Parents Are Ditching The Name ‘Caitlyn’ In All Its Forms

A fun bit of news circulated across the internet on Friday: Kylo, like Kylo Ren, had become the hottest name for baby boys in America, according to new data released by the Social Security Administration.

Between 2015 and 2016, the name jumped from the 3,269th most popular name for baby boys to the 901st ― making it the name that increased the most in popularity, according to the SSA.

But on the other side of the spectrum, a far uglier trend emerged. Among the names for baby girls that dropped most in popularity, the top four were all some form of the name “Caitlyn.”

It’s not hard to connect the trend to Caitlyn Jenner’s decision to come out as transgender in April 2015. Three months later, in July, Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY Awards, which caused widespread anger among moderates and conservatives throughout the country.

(Later on, Jenner would anger many on the left-leaning side of the country as well by voting for then-candidate Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.)

Transgender rights have become one of the most divisive issues in the country in the two years since Jenner came out. In North Carolina, a “bathroom bill,” which required Americans to use the restroom corresponding to the sex on their birth certificate, was applauded as a way to keep young girls safe from transgender women.

But despite those fears, it is actually transgender Americans who continue to face staggering rates of abuse and sexual assault throughout the U.S. According to government estimates, at least half of the transgender community is “sexually abused or assaulted at some point in their lives.” Many more incidents are likely not reported.

Name A Trump Christmas Movie

Greg Schwem invites Twitter users to submit their own PEOTUS holiday movie ideas with the hashtag #NameaTrumpXmasMovie. Follow Greg @Greg Schwem

2016-11-23-1479910359-6174372-TrumpChristmas.jpg

Say what you want about Twitter; no social media platform encourages the world’s creativity and comedic tendencies quite like a clever hashtag and 140 characters.

See last weekend’s kerfuffle following the Hamilton curtain call, when a cast member from the Broadway smash musical delivered a prepared message to performance patron and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on immigration and diversity. Pence, critics argue, is a fierce opponent of both, judging from an assortment of his policies while governing Indiana.

Within hours, the hashtag #NameaPenceMusical was trending and the social media world piled on, with suggestions ranging from the hilarious (“The Book of More White Men”) to the angry and pointed (“Rent … But Only to Straight People”).

Thoroughly entertained by such variety, I spent the weekend refreshing my Twitter feed in between hauling up boxes of Christmas (is it OK to say that?) decorations that will adorn my house for six weeks. Or longer, depending on when my lower back recuperates from lifting boxes of holiday china. Two years ago, Easter dinner included wine glasses etched with holly.

The final box was my favorite. Marked “Holiday Movies,” it contained a collection of DVDs and even a few VHS tapes that, while awaiting Dec. 25, my family watches repeatedly. It’s just not Christmas in the Schwem household until we hear Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister taunt a pair of bumbling burglars with, “You guys give up? Or are you thirsty for more?” Ditto to Will Ferrell’s Buddy the Elf admonishing a department store Santa with the zinger, “You sit on a throne of lies!” Admit it America, we never tire of these classics.

Or do we? Our country has signaled it wants change, an attitude it finalized via the electoral college. We’ve chosen a president who, his supporters say, tells it like it is, won’t kowtow to the Washington status quo and won’t govern like any of his predecessors. The days of same old, same old are over.

If change is what we crave, then I call on our nation’s film directors to update those holiday classics even though reboots usually fall immediately into the “flop” category. Did ANYBODY see Annie with Jamie Foxx?

But submitting suggestion via Twitter, accompanied by the hashtag #NameaTrumpXmasMovie, just might inspire a budding Spielberg or Zemeckis to craft something guaranteed to make the multiplex great again come Christmas 2017. Here are a few suggestions:

Miracle on 5th Avenue: A man claiming to be president is holed up in a Manhattan skyscraper. A psychiatric exam reveals many “un-presidential tendencies,” but the man sues the psychiatrist and is eventually allowed to assume the role of commander-in-chief after the former mayor of New York City goes on Fox News and testifies to his character. His comments are embellished worldwide via fake news sites.

Home Alone 5: Lost in Washington: Our nation’s president is left alone in the White House over Christmas. Mayhem ensues when he tries to ward off an ISIS attack without any counsel from veteran security and anti-terrorism experts.

A Very White Christmas: An entire presidential cabinet is appointed just in time for the holiday.

Trading Places: Sixty-one million people successfully bet 63 million others that it’s possible to take a private citizen with no political experience and transform him into the leader of the free world. No money is exchanged as the losing group stages protests and demands the current betting system be abolished.

The Presidential Clause
: On Christmas Eve a divorced father finds a red tie and a suit from the sitting president’s designer clothing line. An attached note says, “If you are reading this, I have found the job to be too difficult. Put this suit on and assume the role of commander in chief.”

P.S. Don’t see Hamilton. I hear it’s “overrated.”

Zoe Saldana Doesn’t Get Why Everyone’s Shocked Her Husband Took Her Name

Zoe Saldana is here to remind men that it’s NBD to take your wife’s last name.

“Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps hers,” the actress wrote in a June 8 Facebook post.

In an interview for the July cover story of InStyle, Saldana revealed that her husband, Italian artist Marco Perego, chose to adopt her last name after their 2013 marriage.

“I tried to talk him out of it. I told him, ‘If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world’,” she told InStyle. “But Marco looks up at me and says [she puts on a cute Italian accent], ‘Ah, Zoe, I don’t give a sheet.’”

The news made headlines across the web (including in this publication), because, it’s still the assumed default for a woman who marries a man to change her name to match his — however retro that may seem. According to a 2013 YouGov poll , 61 percent of respondents thought that women should take their husbands’ last names, while less than half of those polled even thought that a man should be allowed to take his wife’s name.

Saldana shared her thoughts on Facebook about the public reaction to her husband’s name. “Why is it so surprising, shocking, eventful that a man would take his wife’s surname?,” she asked. “Women have never been asked if its ok for them to give up their names — why doesn’t that make the news?”

She went on to reassure men that their identities would not be erased by a simple name change, imploring us all the rethink the way we define what being a masculine man means:

Men, you will not cease to exist by taking your partner’s surname. On the contrary — you’ll be remembered as a man who stood by change. I know our sons will respect and admire their father more because their father lead by example.
Gentlemen, I implore you to think outside the box- remove the box altogether. Let’s redefine masculinity. A real “man” leads along side his partner. A real man accepts his mortality. A real man acknowledges that nothing can be done alone.

(You can read the full Facebook post below.)

Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps…

Posted by Zoe Saldana on Monday, June 8, 2015

Preach, Zoe. We look forward to a day when a man changing his last name doesn’t even warrant a comment.

47 Republican Senators Write Letter to Queen Demanding Congress Approves Royal Baby Name

2015-05-11-1431355151-3059103-QueenonThrone.jpg

The 47 letter writers, otherwise known as virtually all the Republicans in the Senate, have put pen to paper again.

Led once more by self-proclaimed international law expert Tom Cotton, the Senators have written to the Queen of England to express their profound displeasure at not being consulted about the new royal baby name.

Their latest missive was delivered to Buckingham Palace today and stated the following:

Dear Queen Elizabeth II, or if you prefer, dear Supreme Ruler of Great Britain,

It has come to our attention through leading diplomatic sources — People Magazine, The National Enquirer and The New York Post — that Her Royal Highness, Kate the Duchess of God-Knows-Where, has given birth to a child and named it Charlotte, Elizabeth, Diana without our permission.

We Americans would have undoubtedly chosen Jolene, Mary Lou or Tammy Fay. Thus, we consider the names that you have picked to be nuclear options and reflective of the growing proliferation in your country of names that are too British-sounding, to say the least.

This is unacceptable to us and may fundamentally undermine diplomatic relations between our two great nations. (Well we’re great. You however, are not, despite the fact that you still use the word “Great” in your country’s name.)

We are therefore writing to remind you that as you are a signatory of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance — the entente that established NATO just in case you didn’t know — you will have to obtain agreement from the US Government before this baby’s name becomes official.

And although you may be tempted to deal with our lame duck and chicken-livered President, Barack Obama, on this matter, please be advised that Congress alone has the power to approve royal baby names! Which means dear Madam, you are going to have to negotiate with us!

So given our declared opposition to your chosen names, we would urge you to submit alternatives for our consideration. If Jolene, Mary Lou or Tammy Fay do not pass royal muster, we are prepared, in the interests of diplomacy, to consider Billie Jo, Peggy Sue, or Trixie Bell. At a push, we might even be persuaded to approve Chardonnay.

We hope this clarifies our position with regard to the royal baby name and we look forward to hearing from you forthwith.

As news of the letter to the Queen reverberated around Washington D.C., and outrage about it increased, 46 of the 47 Republican Senators who signed it ran for cover, leaving Tom Cotton holding the bag — or as Brits like to say, holding the baby.

Cotton, in a desperate attempt to avoid an international incident, said: “OK, OK, Chardonnay might be a name too far. Trixie Bell it is then! I will introduce a bill to that effect tomorrow and I expect it to be passed quickly by my colleagues in the House and the Senate.”

In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, the Queen also made her views known on the letter from the 47. She said: I would like to thank the 47 Republican Senators for sharing their thoughts with me on this matter. And I would particularly like to thank their ancestors for the American Declaration of Independence.”

Models Of All Sizes Strip Down In The Name Of Body Diversity In Icelandic Glamour

The ladies of ALDA, a coalition of plus-size models whose name translates to “wave” in Icelandic, are making a real splash in Icelandic Glamour.

alda

Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Julie Henderson, Inga Eiriksdottir and Danielle Redman are the five women hoping to change the perception of beauty in the fashion industry through ALDA. They’re currently being celebrated in an eight-page spread in the second-ever issue of Iceland’s edition of Glamour magazine, each looking downright gorgeous wearing looks from denim to birthday suit.

alda

“It was so much fun! The naked shot happened by accident,” Henderson told The Huffington Post. “We were waiting for Ashley to get there and started fooling around! It is so amazing when all of us get together. We can go weeks without seeing one another, so when we do it makes us all so happy. There is a special magic and chemistry when we are all on set together.”

But there’s way more to love about these ladies than their good looks. The group, which came together after its members’ former modeling agency dissolved its plus-size division, has an important message of empowerment and self-love to share. Eiriksdottir explained their mission to Glamour, then provided a translation from print to HuffPost:

Even if it might sound strange since we [are models], which is a lot about the outside looks, we are more interested in building strong self-esteem in women rather then just focusing on the looks. … In the last few years, we have organized various events that are about getting women together to do healthy things for the body and soul, while raising money for those in need and giving back. … We started working with “Girl Up,” which is a United Nations [Foundation campaign]. The focus is to empower young girls to become leaders and raise money for girls in need around the world.

final alda

There’s certainly a long way to go on the road to a more inclusive industry, but these women sure are paving the way.

Playing the Married Name Game

2014-11-07-501243119.jpg

After saying “I do” there’s a whirlwind of well wishes, honeymoon travel and settling into newlywed life. Typically as soon as the wedding ring is on her finger, a bride is inundated with questions about changing her name from everyone including well meaning relatives (ahem Mother-in-Laws), TSA, friends, and colleagues. You may be thinking “Why all the name change drama in 2014?” The truth of the matter is that name change has been and still is a highly charged topic.

Amal Alamuddin made major waves after she changed her name to Amal Clooney last month. Many feminists were outraged that a high profile international lawyer would take her spouse’s last name, while other women applauded what they saw as a romantic gesture. Regardless of what side they were on, the general public had an opinion on what should be a newlywed woman’s private decision on her name change.

Similarly, Michelle Nunn is facing controversy around keeping her maiden name after marriage. As a Democratic Senate candidate her competitors were voicing concerns that she kept her maiden name to cash in on the political goodwill associated with her father. There’s also speculation that Hillary didn’t take Clinton as a last name until her lack of name change was implicated as part of the reason Bill Clinton was not re-elected as Governor back in 1980.

With all of these high profile women dealing with name change turmoil, what is a newlywed to do? Follow this five steps to ensure that playing the married name game results in your perfect name:

  1. Know Your Options Today’s brides can opt to hyphenate their maiden name with their spouse’s, take two last names sans hyphen, take their maiden name as a middle name, take their spouse’s last name or keep their maiden name post marriage. The multitude of choices allow women to find the options that best suits them and their lifestyle.
  2. Understand State Laws The state you live in dictates what name change options are available to you, so it is important to research your state’s laws. For example, brides living in CA, WA, NJ and OH cannot take their maiden names as a middle name and brides living in NY and PA have to file their government forms in a specific sequence in order to do so.
  3. Consult Your Spouse Knowing your spouse’s thoughts on name change is a must. They may be adamant that you take their family name or they might offer to take yours. Starting newlywed life with open communication and compromise is the key to a happy marriage.
  4. Consider the Future Do you plan to have children and/or build a business off of your current name or career? Is it important that you have the same name as your family or to be recognized under your maiden name? Thinking about future plans can lend clarity to your name change choice and prevent years of regret.
  5. Be True to You At the end of the day, your name change is your choice. While it is wise to consider the various aspects of your life and relationship that may influence that choice, you need to make the decision that you feel most comfortable with. Remember you’re the person who will use that name for the rest of your life!
