Omni 20 USB-C battery pack review: If you try this $200 battery, you’ll never go back

Best USB-C battery pack for laptops: Omni 20 USB-C review

I remember introducing the rest of my family to rechargeable battery packs about seven years ago, just as everyone was migrating from Blackberries onto a mixture of Android and Palm Pre (!) devices. At the time, a 2,000mAh device that fit in a backpack and gave you 60 percent more battery life was the most magical thing I could remember.

Fast-forward to 2018, and battery packs can do a whole lot more. Thanks to improvements in battery technology, a pack the size of a few decks of playing cards can charge your phone for a week, and USB-C technology means that much bigger and more powerful devices can take a charge.

Why It’s Never Too Late to Buy Bitcoin

I get some version of this sentiment every single day I talk to someone not into cryptocurrency about buying into it: “I missed it. It’s too late.”

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO BUY BITCOIN AND GET INTO CRYPTOCURRENCY!

This post has been brewing in me for some time. All the looky-loos who are feeling a serious case of FOMO, as bitcoin and cryptocurrency have dominated the imagination of the investment class, see four-figure prices for a whole bitcoin and think it’s just too late to make money in crypto. As a person who is making money every single day in modest amounts with cryptocurrency, I can assure you that it’s never too late.

bitcoin

THE EVIDENCE: 1. Bitcoin, and most of the best cryptocurrencies, are deflationary assets, meaning that they only appreciate over time, mostly due to the limited nature of their supply. bitcoiin

Bitcoin, the very first cryptocurrency, was created as a reaction against the bailouts brought on in the aftermath of the Great Recession. This is why there will only be 21 million bitcoin ever, produced at a steady, predictable rate over time until 2140. Considering 16.7 million bitcoin have already been produced, the fight for the remaining 4.3M new bitcoin over the next century will be an expensive one. Considering an estimated 4M bitcoin have never moved and are assumed to be “lost” to early creators’ deaths, every millionaire in the US couldn’t own a whole bitcoin of the 12M or so in circulation if they wanted to. GET IN!

2. Bitcoin block rewards will keep “halving” over time. This means that the amount of bitcoin produced from the efforts of miners will see their bitcoin rewards cut in half, periodically and repeatedly, until 21 million is reached. This will make existing and future bitcoin that much more rare, that much more valuable. GET IN!

3. It’s not a bubble. For the first time in a while, consumers are leading the adoption of financial innovation instead of being led by the inherently untrustworthy, self-interested, tax-avoiding financial elite of Wall Street. In the recent past, investment banks, big commercial banks, and legislators/regulators would cook up all manner of schemes to continue to enrich themselves, largely at the expense of the middle-to-lower classes. When the weight of the financial class’ exploitation of the lower classes becomes too much to bear, we get events like the Great Recession. By having a revolution in investment coming from the ground up this time—somehow way ahead of institutional and traditional investors getting a chance to manipulate it—the rise of crypto-wealth feels far more sustainable than other investment trends of the past. GET IN!

bitcoin4. The dollar has lost its value. Forget inflation, a concept that bitcoin laughs at as a de facto deflationary cryptocurrency. When economists and the landed gentry of the financial class poke at bitcoin, decrying that it has “no value,” it exposes the myth of the inherent value of the U.S. dollar itself.

Besides centuries of advantage being first to market, relentless societal and institutional marketing, and the backing of the biggest army in the world to enforce it, the dollar doesn’t have any value unless we give it value. And that value is falling.

That value is falling because of the instability of executive American leadership, worldwide distrust after the financial shenanigans and money printing done to get us out of the Recession, and the gaping need for a truly stateless world reserve currency. At best, the American president is unqualified for a job he ascertained under a cloud of suspicion and foreign interference. While many Americans lost their jobs and their homes, investment banks who gambled away their pensions were bailed out, and are even stronger than ever. Add in the fact that the purchasing power of the US dollar has fallen some 96% over the last hundred years. Since 1976, the dollar has been off of the gold standard, which underpinned the value of the currency to ounces of gold, yet still, the world considers the dollar the world’s reserve currency. With all these factors going against it, it’s a miracle the dollar is valued much at all. GET IN!

5. Bitcoin could be—should be—worth more than a million dollars per coin in our lifetime. It is opined here that a $ 1M per bitcoin valuation is well within the global money supply. As it is truly a deflationary asset, HODLers like myself tend to buy and hold rather than spend it, adding to its scarcity of demand. Also consider that bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are breaking all traditional molds of financial and FOREX investing. This article here explains how the $ 350 trillion markets for money, equities, and real estate will all be digitized by blockchain assets. We are not even at a quarter trillion in cryptocurrency market cap today. GET IN!

6. It continues to outperform all asset classes combined. The reason why we invest is to build wealth and financial security, correct? As evidenced by the chart below from an earlier post, nothing has built wealth like an investment in bitcoin over the past seven years. GET IN!

At some point, it’s not a bubble: It’s just REALITY. Welcome to our new financial reality, where you have a once-in-a-generation chance to build generational wealth. For all the reasons above and more, for the immediate future, it’s never too late to invest in cryptocurrency—and escape the financial world’s Sunken Place.

This is why you should never spray perfume in your hair

NEVER. EVER.

If there’s one thing that’s true about hair, it’s that it’s great at holding on to scent.

But although we all like our hair to smell great, you should never spray regular perfume directly on your hair.

This is because perfume contains alcohol, which is incredibly drying for hair and can leave it brittle, haystack-like and more likely to suffer breakage.

Hair mists on the other hand are still perfumed, but with a much lower concentration of alcohol, so you can spritz away to your heart’s content. Plus they last ages, due to your hair’s ability to trap the smell, so no need for top-ups throughout the day.

With this in mind, we’ve picked some of our favourite hair mists from the perfumery world we’re obsessed with (and you will be too).

Balmain Hair Silk Perfume, £9.95, Lookfantastic

A designer favourite, the dreamy scent of pine, peach blossom, woods and raspberry is enriched with argain oil and silk protein to treat your hair while you wear it. Win-win.

Byredo La Tulipe Hair Perfume, £48, Space NK

Tulips are actually scentless, so this gorgeous floral scent is founder Ben Gorham’s imagination of what it would smell like. It’s the perfect balance of sweet florals without being too sickly, combining freesia, rhubarb and blonde woods.

Maison Francois Kirkdijan Baccarat Rouge 540 Hair Mist, £65, Selfridges

Baccarat Rouge 540 is a delicious combination of cedar, saffron and amber gris, combining for a rich, slightly fruity overall scent – so you can imagine our delight when it was turned into a scented hair mist. It’s the perfect fragrance to wear all year-round.

Coco Madameoiselle Fresh Hair Mist, £34.20, House of Fraser

Recently revealed as the most popular perfume of 2018 so far, it’s only fair that we give a shout out to Chanel’s fresh hair scent. A timeless classic, this is the perfect buy if Coco Madameoiselle is already your signature scent.

Apologies in advance for starting your new hair perfume addiction.

Here’s to great hair (mist) days for everyone.

10 Instagram moms who remind us we’re never alone

by

Becky Vieira

posted in Life

Motherhood is amazing. It can also be lonely. Thankfully other moms are there to lean on when we need it. Unless you’re like me, who spent the first few months of my son’s life without any mom friends.

I turned to Instagram to fill the void. And while I love the accounts of moms who dress their entire family in matching white outfits (while sitting on their white couch, eating homemade snacks made of fruits and vegetables grown in their garden, and served on plates made in their home pottery studio), that wasn’t me.

Luckily, with some searching, I found “my people.”

There are celebrities I love and follow (Chrissy Tiegen is all of us, and Busy Phillips is my imaginary best friend). But the bulk of my tribe is comprised of these amazing moms who fill my Instagram feed with love, humor and honesty:

For the mom craving honesty: motherhoodunderstood is the mom friend we all crave. Brooke Christian and Jen Schwartz are PPD survivors who are busting taboos and changing conversations. They get real about everything and say what we’re all thinking. Only this duo does it with empathy, humor and grace. Follow them here.

For the mom seeking balance: motherhonestly is a community created by Blessing Adesiyan. She’s a chemical engineer, mom of two and the queen of personal balance. She’s found a way to thrive at work and home, on her own terms. She inspires and helps other moms find their path of balance. I always feel so encouraged by her feed. Follow her here.

For the sarcastic/funny/real mom: macgyveringmom22 is one of the first moms I found on Instagram who helped me feel normal and not alone. Macgill Frutchey is a mom of three boys who tackles life with wit and humor. Her keen observations leave me nodding and cracking up, and I’m constantly sharing her memes with friends. But I really fell in love with her when she began documenting her battle with a rare and aggressive sarcoma (cancer) in between those hilarious memes. She’s an inspiration — and a constant source of comfort, sisterhood and humor. Follow her here.

For the fit mom: sweatwithlaurenhefez inspires me to move. Her photos make me happy and draw me in. And, dare I say, make me want to exercise. She’s always having fun while staying fit. She peppers her account with real mom life — meals, trips to Target and reminding us moms how fantastic we are. Follow her here.

For the healthy/foodie mom: lifeandthymez is everything I aspire to be in the kitchen: healthy, delicious and simple. Mom Zlata Faerman’s recipes are toddler-friendly. Meaning, you don’t have to make a separate meal for the adults and children. And did I mention simple? Two ingredient, healthy cookies. Many are also low FODMAP and gluten free. She also shares her picks for healthy store-bought snacks when you can’t make your own. Because… motherhood! Follow her here.

For the tired mom: meetyoundreamland helped my son sleep. And, as a result, I was able to sleep also. Kerrin Edmonds is a certified infant and pediatric sleep consultant, and she shares all sorts of tips on her Instagram page. As a bonus, she hosts a live, free Q&A every Thursday night where she answers all your sleep questions. If I can’t make the live session I’ll read the questions the next day, and I’m constantly picking up sleep tips. Follow her here.

For the timeless mom: olliella is the feed for sisters Chloe and Olivia Brookman’s gorgeous collection of wares for nomads, homebodies and small folk, Olli Ella — but it’s so much more. The photos are not only of the gorgeous products, but the sisters’ lives with their families. From travel to the everyday, it will draw you in. And the accompanying messages will fill your heart and make you feel at home. Follow them here.

For the outdoorsy mom: beccajcaldwell is letting her kids run loose — on trails, in National Parks and anywhere without a roof. Rebecca Caldlwell’s pure love for the outdoors is being passed along to her children. Her account is full of family photos in the great outdoors, showing how we can help our own little community enjoy the beauty around us. Follow her here.

For the mom fighting PPD: whentheboughbreaksdoc was a groundbreaking documentary that ripped the curtain off postpartum depression and started a long overdue dialogue. This companion account shares personal stories and inspirational memes. Follow it here.

For the mom looking for a friend: wittyotter is the mom who will give you honesty through laughter and tears. Full disclosure, this one is mine. I’m nothing if not honest. I’ve tried to create an account that shows what I was craving in my early days of motherhood: truth, compassion and friendship. I share the funny (and embarrassing) times, unfiltered moments along my PPD journey and photos of me in my hospital granny panties. Follow me here.

Chrissy Teigen just raised a VERY important question about The Little Mermaid on Twitter, and the movie will never be the same again

Chrissy Teigen just raised a VERY important question about <em>The Little Mermaid</em> on Twitter, and the movie will never be the same again

We’re pleased to report that Chrissy Teigen has broken the internet yet again. Thanks to her humor, frankness, and penchant for Twitter rants, Teigen is of our favorite people to follow on social media. Remember when she live-tweeted her disastrous experience flying to Tokyo? Or her savage tweets about Jesus Christ Superstar Live? Well, Teigen’s latest Twitter rant — which happens to be about The Little Mermaid — might be our favorite one yet.

On Sunday, June 10th, the supermodel and cookbook author took to Twitter to raise a VERY important question: “How does Ariel know what ‘reprimand’ means but not ‘feet?’” And now, we don’t think we’ll ever see The Little Mermaid the same way again.

Teigen is, of course, referring to lyrics from the song “Part of Your World.” While wondering about life above the water, Ariel sings, “Bet’cha on land, they understand / Bet they don’t reprimand their daughters.”

We always knew that Ariel didn’t know the words for a lot of objects on land. At various points during The Little Mermaid, she doesn’t know the word for a fork or a pipe, opting instead to call them a “dinglehopper” and a “snarfblat,” respectively. But Teigen pointing out that Ariel DOES know such a big word (you know, relatively speaking) like “reprimand” makes us see the movie in a new way.

We don’t know what prompted Teigen’s Twitter rant about The Little Mermaid — maybe she was watching the movie at home with Luna and Miles? But however she arrived at this thought, we’re grateful that she shared it with us.

Can’t argue with this logic.

In the end, Teigen decided that maybe Ariel just isn’t the brightest Disney princess of the bunch.

After all, the mermaid has lived a pretty sheltered life.

Oh, Chrissy. Never stop tweeting your trains of thought, okay?

‘He Had Everything.’ Anthony Bourdain’s Mother Says She Never Thought He Would Commit Suicide

Anthony Bourdain’s mother has expressed shock and sadness over the death of her son in an interview with the New York Times.

“He is absolutely the last person in the world I would have ever dreamed would do something like this,” Gladys Bourdain, who was an editor at the Times for years, told the newspaper.

Bourdain, the renowned chef and author whose storytelling and traveling influenced others and embraced different cultures, died this week in an apparent suicide. He was 61 years old.

“He had everything,” his mother told the Times. “Success beyond his wildest dreams. Money beyond his wildest dreams.”

Gladys Bourdain told the Times that Eric Ripert, a French chef and close friend of her son’s, told her that Bourdain “had been in a dark mood these past couple of days.”

Bourdain’s death shocked and saddened the world this week as fans and friends of his expressed the impact he had on their lives and the influential role he had in the restaurant industry. Restaurant owners and chefs who he visited in his variety of TV shows point to him as a reason for their growing success, and fans took to social media to express how he used his platform to convey empathy and understanding.

Bourdain’s suicide followed that of Kate Spade, an influential fashion designer who had died in an apparent suicide at age 55, and came at a time when the rates of suicide were on the rise across the U.S. Mental health professionals advised people to reach out and support friends or loved ones who may be struggling, and learn to identify warning signs like depression or changes in behavior, among other behaviors.

The deaths of two influential figures in their respective fields have also provoked conversations about how successful people are not immune depression, mental health issues or suicide. TIME’s Belinda Luscombe detailed this in a piece, where she examined the deaths of Bourdain and Kate Spade, the influential fashion designer who had died by an apparent suicide days earlier. “Many lives are not as they appear. Happiness is not the end result of a sum of accomplishments,” Luscombe writes. “The person whose wealth/wardrobe/job/talent you wish you had has his or her own struggles, and they could at least equal our own.”

If you or someone you know may be contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

10 things you should never get on a plane without

If you’re just as obsessed with traveling as we are, you’ll know that packing for a vacation is one of the hardest things to do. Sure, you can get excited about wandering around temples, frolicking on a beach, exploring rainforests and other fun activities, but if you haven’t packed the right essentials you might be turning as red as a tomato on the beach, being bitten within an inch of your life in the rainforest, and walking around with broken shoes in the temples. It’ll be a mess. Want our help? We travel all the time, and these are the 10 things we never get on a plane without.

A multi-functional carry-on

Gone are the days of simply taking a backpack as your flight carry-on – the world of traveling has advanced. Nowadays, you can buy awesome multi-functional bags that is a mix between a backpack and a tiny suitcase. Despite their size, these kinds of carry-on cases have enough space to carry everything you need for the plane journey, as well as being both practical and fashionable.

Wireless earbuds

There’s nothing worse than opening your bag to find that your headphones have got caught up in all of your other belongings, or saturated with the hand lotion that popped open mid-flight. This is why we always opt for wireless headphones that you can simply keep in your pocket – away from anything that might hurt or harm them. Nowadays, these kinds of headphones normally have a 6-8 hour charge on them, which is perfect for a mid to long-haul flight.

Comfortable and supportive socks

It’s no secret that sitting on a plane for hours on end is not comfortable in the slightest, which is why should always take it upon yourself to try anything to be comfortable. One of the best ways to do this is to wear your most comfortable and most supportive socks. This way, your feet will feel warm, toasty and soft as you sit in the stagnant air of the airplane.

A multi-purpose toiletry bag

If you hadn’t already guessed, we’re all about using things that can be used for different purposes, which is why you should get a multi-purpose toiletry bag. When you’re traveling a lot, it is not practical to carry various different bags for different categories of cosmetics and toiletries. By buying yourself an all-in-one bag that has separate compartments, you will save yourself a lot of hassle.

A toothbrush you’re used to

During ours travels, we’ve realized that the toothbrushes you receive in hotels or on long flights are often painful and uncomfortable – which is why it’s always important to travel with a toothbrush you’re used to. Whether you want something a bit fancy, or whether you’re used to a cheap dollar toothbrush from the local store, it’ll save you a lot of hassle and bleeding gums.

A multi-purpose wallet

You might be wondering what other purpose a wallet could have – but it’s actually pretty nifty! You can now buy wallets and purses that double up as battery packs for your cell phone, which is perfect for a long flight or a day of traveling. Instead of finding yourself with no battery, you can simply plug it into your purse and charge it up as you go.

A personal backpack

You may have your multi-purpose carry-on, but this bag is not practical for wandering around small side streets, checking out traditional markets, or even surviving a flight. This is why a personal backpack is one of the 10 things we never get on a plane without. This is where you can carry everything from your water to a good book, to your sunglasses, to your headphones and more. By using a personal backpack, you can separate your important flight essentials from your luxuries.

A fancy phone case

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the items you need to take on a flight, which is why it’s best to keep as many things as possible together. This is why it’s a good idea to invest in fancy phone cases that have space for important cards such as ID or bank card. This way, you do not have to fumble around for a purse if you need these items, as they will always be with your phone.

Comfy clothes

Just as you don’t want to step on a plane without comfy socks, you also don’t want to step on a plane without comfortable clothes. When you’re stuck in one position for a few hours, the last thing you want is to be constricted by your clothing. So, steer clear of tight clothing such as denim, and opt for looser items such as leggings, sweaters and more.

Quality skincare

There are a few issues with airplanes; they’re not totally clean, and they’re extremely dry – and these factors can wreak havoc on your body. If you find your skin feels dry during every single flight, then start arming yourself with quality skin care, such as hand lotion and cleansing lotion to avoid bacteria.

If you travel as much as we do, you’ve learned what works and what doesn’t when you’re in-flight – and after many years, we’ve come to the conclusion that these 10 things are essential. Trust us!

The C-Word You Should Never Call a Woman

Social media once again proved their chief export was outrage this week when late night show host Samantha Bee told a joke about Ivanka Trump, calling her a “feckless ‘C-Word.’” (She has since apologized.)

It was no surprise that calls for the comedian to apologize split along party lines, with many conservatives demanding their pound of flesh in return for the canceling of Roseanne over racist tweets earlier in the week. (It’s a false equivalency, but nonetheless a useful tool for figuring out if someone is a racist—equating an abhorrent racial slur with a not-very-nice word.)

For years, the “C-word” has enjoyed the “we can use it, but you can’t” codicil in offensive language. But even in feminist circles, it is still very much another c-word—controversial.

As someone who founded and administers a pro-Hillary Facebook group, I’ve found myself in the middle of this discussion so many times, the other admins and I joke that our memoir will be called Parsing the Word C-nt. We have a no hate speech policy but the question remains, is the “C-word” hate speech?

I started employing the “C-word” in high school for a very simple reason: I wanted to shock. I was a teenager, I wanted to be different, I wanted to be edgy. If this was a word that was so bad you couldn’t use it, then I wanted to be the one to use it. I didn’t realize at the time that in my teen rebellion, I was inadvertently reclaiming the word.

I assume that a majority of the women of my generation and younger women have had a similar journey, judging by the way “C-words” rain down freely and peppers our conversations. You can be mad at someone and use it, but it’s lost a lot of its power, having all of the bite of calling someone a “bitch.” (Although admittedly, this word, too, remains charged based on context and personal interpretation.) For other women, it has evolved into being sensual and erotic—take C-nt: A Declaration of Independence by Inga Muscio, or The C-nt Coloring Book, for example.

Shortly before the election, I had another evolution in thinking about the “C-word.” After seeing a staggering amount of misogyny from folks across every aisle—all of who were using the “C-word,” and not “Clinton,” to describe the most qualified and accomplished modern candidate for the presidency, as well as any women who supported her, I realized that being a c-nt wasn’t such a bad thing. Women were being called c-nts for actually doing some really amazing and brave things.

If it makes you a “C-word” to stand up for yourself, to work hard, to speak truth to power, to not let a man take advantage of your body, to fight for the rights of marginalized voices—then yes, vagina, I was a cunt!

So I made a video about it.

There is one c-word I think is truly offensive to call a woman: crazy. “Crazy” is a tool that the patriarchy uses to dismiss the humanity of women. If a woman thinks she’s being sexually harassed, she’s crazy. If a woman raises her voice or is demanding like a man, she’s crazy. If a woman calls out discrimination, wants to be paid fairly, or says that your jokes are lazy and offensive, she’s crazy. Calling a woman “crazy” is how men say that a woman’s concerns and experiences aren’t real. It’s the permission they give themselves to keep doing what they’re doing, without confronting their own biases. It prevents one of my favorite c-words: change.

Looking back on the whole mess, what should concern Ivanka Trump the most is the “f-word” she was called, the one before the “C-word”—feckless. It means weak, ineffective, worthless. As a woman who builds her brand on the illusion that she works and a mother of a daughter, that should really sting her the most. You can call Hillary Clinton the “C-word” as much as you want, but you can never say she’s feckless. C-nts are never weak and often very effective.

That’s why they hate us.

Tony Awards 2018: The Best Black Actress You Never Heard Of Is Up for a Tony

Seconds after this year’s Tony Award nominations were announced, director Kenny Leon’s phone started blowing up. Lauren Ridloff, the star of Broadway’s revival of Children of a Lesser God, was officially in the race for Best Lead Actress in a Play.

While the announcement may have come as a surprise to some—including Ridloff herself—it only validated what the play’s Tony Award-winning director knew all along.

“I am over the moon excited about it,” Leon said in a phone interview the next day, recalling that the texts flew between them for an hour and a half. “She was surprised! I wasn’t surprised, because she gave one of the most vivid and unforgettable performances on Broadway I’ve ever seen.”

The backstory of Ridloff’s road to the most coveted nomination a stage actor can get is great fodder for its own fairytale script with Leon, who won a Tony for directing the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun, playing a leading role.

Tony Awards

(Twitter)

Begin with the fact that Ridloff is 40 years old, deaf since birth and, when Leon discovered her, she wasn’t an actress at all. She was an at-home mom and former kindergarten teacher whom he hired to tutor him in American Sign Language (ASL). As Leon mulled the idea of reviving the 1979 play about a deaf woman who refused to read lips or speak, he was soon intent on hiring Ridloff in a broader role, as a consultant if the play launched. She would be able to keep the story true to the deaf experience. Ultimately, he asked her to star in the show.

Ridloff was game from the start. Although she has rarely even seen a play (stage productions rarely accommodate the needs of deaf people), she identified with the the script’s main character, Sarah Norman.

Like Sarah, Ridloff decided at age 13 that she would not speak. Through an interpreter, Ridloff told The Interval, a theater website, that it was an act of self-preservation.

Small, bookish, biracial, and mainstreamed in a school where almost everyone else could hear, “I felt there was enough oddness about me,” she recalled. “I didn’t want to face any bullying. I didn’t want to face strange gazes from other people. I didn’t want to be judged based on my voice because that was not a reflection of my intelligence or my personality or who I was.”

It is a testament to Leon’s vision and courage that he cast Ridloff, a woman of color, in a role that had previously only been played by white women (remember Marlee Matlin in the 1986 film?). “I thought it was a given that Sarah was a white deaf woman,” Ridloff told Variety magazine. “So, it was a big surprise to find out that Sarah is now a woman of color, and I’m so proud to present that new Sarah to the world.”

It is a testament to Ridloff’s talent and courage that she agreed to take it on, all the way to the big lights (and brutal critics) of Broadway. The risks have paid off.

“She keeps saying I opened the door, but it’s not about me,” says Leon, arguably one of today’s most sought after and respected directors. “She is a fierce, courageous woman who wants to change what people think about deaf people. She is a gifted artist who wants to be a part of changing the world. With this performance, she’s already doing that.” The Tony Awards will air June 10 on CBS.

Full disclosure: I saw this play on opening night, and could not take my eyes off of Ridloff—not only because she signs throughout the entire play, but because she is one of the most expressive people I’ve ever seen. Physically small, she has massive presence as she literally embodies her role, communicating with her eyes, her face, her posture and entire being in a way that rings clear and true.

In an age when much is made of the need for women to raise their voices and speak their truths, in opting to withhold her spoken voice as a teenager, Ridloff found her true one, and in Children of a Lesser God , everyone hears her, loud and clear.

5 things I’ve done since having a baby I was told I’d never do again

by

Jamie Reed

posted in Parenting

It’s a bit of a shock to realize my baby will be 5 months old this week. In some ways it feels as if he’s been controlling my life an adorable addition for much longer, and in other ways it’s like I only just found out I was pregnant.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about all the “helpful” advice people gave me before the baby, telling me all the things I’d never do again, now that I was going to be a mom. (I wrote about that  here.)

Not only have I done ALL of the things, I’ve done them quite a bit. Moms-to-be, don’t panic. Here are the things you’ll still get to do after having a baby:

1. Go out to eat

Granted I did pretty much stay tucked away in my house for the first couple of months of my baby’s life, but that was really due to the crazy cold/flu season we experienced. Once my pediatrician said things were calming down, we broke out of the house and have taken the baby all over the place. I imagine eating with a toddler will prove challenging in other ways, but for now, he’s pretty easy to transport wherever we decide to go.

mom and baby in restaurant

2. Travel

While I haven’t taken the baby on any big trips yet, I have done a little traveling on my own recently. A few days in California were quite lovely and I was really refreshed when I got home. My husband and I also have a couple of weekend trips planned for the summer, both with and without the baby. Is it harder to travel with a baby? Sure. It helps that we have grandparents near by and a pretty content baby.

landscape from airplane

3. Sleep through the night

When I was close to the end of my pregnancy I was sharing some fears with a friend. So many people were telling me sleep horror stories (and just general baby horror stories) and they were getting in my head. My friend listened to my fears and said, “You know, some babies actually do sleep. You might get one of those.” Huh.

Even better than hearing those hopeful words? The fact that she was right.

So far, my son has always been a good sleeper. We had to wake him up in the beginning to eat. When he hit 3-4 months he was sleeping 4-6 hours at a time during the night and now that he’s 5 months old? He’s sleeping 7-10 hours solid a night! (And yes, I know that not everyone gets a baby who’s a great sleeper, but, pregnant moms, don’t panic just yet. It can happen to you!)

4. Take a shower

Were there days in the beginning where I wore the same outfit for three days solid and couldn’t remember the last time I washed my hair? Definitely. But things settled down and now I’m bathing at least a couple of times of month. 😉

baby playing on mat

That play mat goes everywhere, including the bathroom while I shower and dry my hair! He’s not too sure about the hair dryer…

5. Wear something other than yoga pants

I wear sweat pants too!

Sure, some days are spent in the clothes I slept in, but in my defense that happened pre-baby too. (I work from home.) I actually like getting dressed for the day, even if the only person who gets to appreciate my outfit is an adorable drool-machine. Though I will say wearing heels again after months of flats during pregnancy has been an adjustment. I feel like I’m a kid playing dress-up.

mother and baby in clothing store

Proof I put on “real” clothes AND leave the house occasionally!

It’s been reassuring that so many things have returned to how they were. My husband and I spend our evenings making and eating dinner, catching our favorite television shows, and trying to make plans for the days ahead. As big as an adjustment a baby is (and yes, it’s a BIG adjustment), life will take on a new normal. You’ll eventually find some form of a routine, and carry on almost like you did before. Almost.

Have you managed to do any of the things people say you wouldn’t do post baby?

R. Kelly Apologizes to Fans Amid #MuteRKelly Campaign: ‘I’ve Never Heard of a Show Being Canceled Because of Rumors’ [Video]

R. Kelly’s scheduled performance in Chicago on May 5 for the UIC Pavilion’s Pre-Mother’s Day Love Jam has been cancelled — thanks in part to the #MuteRKelly campaign.

On Sunday, R. Kelly took to social media to apologize to his fans for the cancellation.

“First of all, I want to apologize to all of my fans in Chicago, and basically all around the world wherever I’m performing at and they canceled me,” he said. “I don’t know why they canceled the show. I never heard of a show being canceled because of rumors, but I guess there’s a first time for everything. So I apologize to you guys and in the meantime, I’m going to try to get to the bottom line of it, you know, as far as my lawyers are concerned, and see exactly what happened and why I was canceled.”

The May 5 show would’ve been his first in Chicago since the ‘sex cult’ allegations were published last July.

A petition signed by 1,300 students at the University of Illinois in Chicago called for the cancellation of R. Kelly’s concert on May 5, citing “overwhelming public evidence of [Kelly’s] history of sexual misconduct.” The letter, co-written by Natalie Bennett of the Women’s Leadership and Resource Center at UIC, was to be sent to UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis upon reaching 1,500 signatures.

With Time’s Up joining the #MuteRKelly campaign, we expect several (if not all) of R. Kelly’s shows to be cancelled in the coming weeks.

Segregation Was Never Good For Black People. Not Even A Little Bit [Opinion]

Segregation was never good for black people. We were not better off during Jim Crow. Not even a little bit. Those who wax nostalgically about how we thrived during segregation and leveraged it to our economic advantage to support and sustain healthy, strong black communities are just straight-up wrong.
We need to stop romanticizing life for African Americans before integration. The overwhelming majority of black people were trapped in abject poverty (or at best, a fragile subsistence), locked out of nearly every profession or industry where they could gain access to significant income and wealth, regardless of their level of education or social-economic status. We were also excluded from Wall Street and other centers of capital and investment. (In fact, for much of America’s history prior to integration, not only could we not acquire stock and commodities—we were counted as livestock ourselves). As recently as the 1950s, the rare African American with a Ph.D. could hope for no better than a job as a teacher or minister.
And the great black entrepreneurs in the age of segregation operated with absolutely zero legal protection or civil rights, essentially deprived of any legal means of protecting their assets/wealth. Laws both civil and criminal were set up so that white people could take property, money, land, etc. from black people with impunity. And what they couldn’t take, they would destroy—the devastating 1921 race riot that destroyed Tulsa, Oklahoma’s “Black Wall Street” is the best known, but far from the only example of this truth. Countless black people, including (maybe especially) the educated and relatively wealthy—including many WWI veterans who tasted freedom in Europe—were lynched (concurrent with the establishment and rise of the Ku Klux Klan) in order to eliminate them as a source of economic competition and as a way to use terror to keep blacks “in their place.”
The vast majority of people who talk today about how much better off black people were during segregation have lived most, if not all of their lives, in the post-segregation era. I’ve interviewed many people who actually lived through Jim Crow segregation (most are now in their 80s or 90s or older), including my late grandfather, who died at age 97 in 2008 less than six months before Barack Obama was elected to the U.S. presidency. I can’t remember any of them wishing to go back to the way things were during segregation. Today, we operate with unequal protection and access as black people; they operated with zero protection and access. If any of us black people born after 1960 were magically transported back to 1921, 1931 or even 1951, most of us wouldn’t last a month.
No matter how much we struggle with injustice and racism today, our better is in pushing forward, not going back to a nostalgic, selectively imagined, segregated past.

Here’s yet another good reason to never use Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer hacking patch

If you or any of your loved ones are still using Internet Explorer — and yes, I do mean true IE, not Microsoft Edge — then you probably already realize that you’re a good 15 years behind the times. But if you need a good nudge to get you (or your company’s IT department) off this addiction before it ruins more good families, this news should do it.

A hacking group is actively exploiting a zero-day exploit in Internet Explorer to infect Windows PCs with malware, according to researchers. A team from Qihoo 360’s Core security unit “say an advanced persistent threat (APT) group is using the IE vulnerability on a “global scale,” according to ZDNet. The vulnerability is being exploited using an infected Office document, loaded with something called a “double-kill” vulnerability.

The Word Is Out: Never Wear These Shoes With Leggings

There is no denying that leggings have become a streetwear staple to the wardrobes of nearly every It girl in existence. Remember the great debate of whether or not leggings were pants? Well, that’s been put to rest, as celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Chrissy Teigen not only wear them on the regular, but they style them in ways unthinkable. In case you weren’t aware, Gigi and Chrissy have the same stylist, Monica Rose, and during a three-day trip hosted by Reebok, I had the opportunity to interview the genius herself.

Curious to pick her brain on all things legging- and sneaker-related, I first asked Monica what the best sneakers to wear with leggings are. She said, “I think a [Reebok] classic leather is good to wear. I just think it’s such a comfortable shoe. When I wear them, I’m excited for work and excited to be comfortable. But for leggings, I think any sneaker really goes with them.” If you aren’t familiar with the Classic Leather sneakers Monica speaks so highly of, don’t worry, we shopped out the best colors below.

In addition to the best sneakers to wear with leggings, I asked Monica what the one item was she would never style with leggings. Without hesitation, she clearly stated to consider leaving your thigh-high boots at home. If Monica Rose, the mastermind behind some of the most memorable looks in fashion right now, says she would never put thigh-high boots with leggings, that means the powerful clan that is Monica’s clients won’t be wearing that boot style with leggings anytime soon.

Go on to shop the sneakers Monica Rose says look the best with leggings, including the Reebok Classic Leather style.

Elon Musk says Autopilot will never be perfect but can ‘reduce accidents by a factor of 10’

Elon Musk Tesla Autopilot

Earlier today, CBS This Morning aired a new clip from its sit-down interview with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The clip below centers on Tesla’s Autopilot feature, a topic that has been in the news quite a bit over the past few weeks following a tragic crash that saw a Model X in Autopilot mode careen into a highway divider before the vehicle’s battery pack burst into flames.

In the wake of the accident, Tesla said that the car’s Autopilot system warned the driver to place his hands on the wheel in the seconds leading up to the crash, warnings that Tesla claims were not heeded.

Kim Zolciak Says She’s ‘Never’ Appearing on ‘RHOA’ Again

Never say never? Kim Zolciak-Biermann said on Saturday, April 14, that she is done for good with the Real Housewives of Atlanta and won’t appear on the Bravo hit again.

Biermann and her husband, Kroy Biermann, were caught on video by TMZ at the airport on Saturday and the Don’t Be Tardy star said that she will “never, never” appear on RHOA again, saying that it is “too much stress, unneeded stress.”

The reality star, 39, returned to Real Housewives this season, but feuded on-camera and off with costar and rival NeNe Leakes.

Earlier this week, E! NewsJason Kennedy spoke to Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen and said that he’d Skyped with Biermann, who told him that she was “done with the Housewives.”

“She’s tired of the NeNe stuff. This is over,” Kennedy added.

“I think she’s done,” Cohen agreed. “She walked out of that reunion and I was like, ‘OK, I’ve seen the last of that wig at these reunions.’”

As previously reported, Biermann and Leakes went head-to-head during the season 10 reunion, which aired earlier this month. Biermann stormed off the set and broke down in tears backstage after Leakes, 50, yelled at her and called her “f—king trash.”

The pair had been sparring for months after Biermann’s eldest daughter, Brielle Biermann, posted a video that allegedly showed a cockroach on the floor of Leakes’ bathroom. The Glee alum then went on a social media rant, slamming the mother-daughter duo and accusing them of being racist.

“I will never understand the mentality of women aged 40+ attacking another woman for hours on end,” Brielle tweeted last month in Kim’s defense. “I wish they would channel that negativity and anger for someone who is positive, loving, caring, beautiful! Etc. into something positive. Maybe then they’d be happy.”

Places nature never intended for us to live

Humans are extremely adaptable. Having first come out of Africa and dealing with all the natural hardships there, human beings dispersed throughout the planet to inhabit every corner of the globe. There are several places on the planet which were simply not meant for human habitation. But humans are tough, and people have persevered despite the immense odds against them. Here are five of those places.

La Rinconada, Peru

This Peruvian village way up in the Andes is considered to be the town at the highest altitude in the world. Anyone wanting to travel there must drive on narrow roads along cliff faces with no guard rails. It’s not a place for the faint of heart. Once you get to town you can see the true reason why it’s so crazy humans live there – the entire town is built on a glacier! But why are people moving to this town situated on an (invariably) melting glacier at 16,700 feet? The town’s giant gold mine of course.

Pompeii, Italy

About 2000 years ago, Pompeii was a city full of debauchery and thieves until one day the volcano right next to the city erupted. The eruption was so violent and sudden that entire buildings and even people were preserved in the ash to this day! No one in their right mind would rebuild     a town there because as we all know, history repeats itself.

Except the town was in fact rebuilt, and the city now has 25,000 residents. The volcano also continues to erupt, having wiped out other towns in 1906 and again in 1944.

Motuo, China

This southern Chinese county sitting on the southern side of the Himalayan mountains is one of the most remote places in the world. Moist air gets trapped in this area by the mountains, creating a rainforest here which will destroy and eat everything that isn’t nailed down – and even some stuff that is! There are no roads here as the ground is too wet and muddy to build on. There are also no stores or even hospitals! And yet, despite all of this, there are 10,000 people who live in this Chinese county, receiving supplies from couriers on motorcycles.

Verkhoyansk, Russia

This Russian city of 1,500 is known as the coldest city in the world, with typical winter highs only reaching -50 degrees Fahrenheit! The place is so cold and remote that the Russian Czars and Soviets used to send their political enemies here. If you try to escape, you’ll either freeze to death or starve. Also, during the summer, the sun only shines for five hours!

The Maldives

These tropical islands are known as paradises for foreigners, but the majority of the country’s 329,000 strong population is squeezed onto the tiny atoll of Male. This collection of islands is super tough to live on, especially since most of the Sunni Muslim inhabitants are super poor and dependent on tourist dollars. In addition to the lack of room on these islands, rising water levels are threatening the very land upon which this country is built!

I thought it would be long gone by now, kind of like my belly bands and maternity jeans. I thought I’d have wriggled free and moved on. It would be just another memory of the early days, like pump parts and nursing pads.

But mom guilt is still very much with me.

It emerged again this morning as a friend and I discussed preschools. As we chatted, the questions looped through my head like an endless chyron.

Was I wrong to pull my son from his previous school? The place we’re at now is more convenient for me, but is it the best place for him? He gets less time outside now but more time with me, so is that a decent tradeoff? Where would he thrive more? What if he hates it? What if he hates me for putting him here?

I don’t know what I’m supposed to do to shake the mom guilt.

I’ve let go of so many of the other issues that plagued me when my son was a baby. I successfully emerged on the other side from postpartum depression. I researched all the things — ALL the things, from nursing, co-sleeping, and sleep training to every type of parenting style — and I tried my best to make the best decisions for my family. And I feel like I finally found my groove as a mama.

So I thought when a certain number of milestones were achieved, the mom guilt would simply dissolve. POOF! Gone forever.

I imagined that after some time had passed, after I relaxed into my role as a parent, after I successfully made some decisions and watched my son thrive, there’d be no place for mom guilt to hide. I expected that the weight would leave my shoulders and that I would stride into every decision with confidence and have no regrets. But still the mom guilt lurks.

A Caucasian woman and her child, who happens to be the world's cutest toddler, pose together for a selfie

It slinks under every decision I make. When I have a dinner out with friends. When I work overtime. When I opt to hug out a tantrum with my son rather than do a time out. I know I’m not in a position to provide my son with everything, but I try to make up for it with love.

And what if that’s not enough? I second-guess myself. I feel bad, even though I’m not sure that following an alternative path would have made me feel any better.

What I’m learning is that mom guilt is a companion that will follow me all the way through motherhood, like a shadow. There are moments of the day when it will be more prominent, as well as times when it will seemingly disappear. I guess I just have to make friends with it — or at the very least, get used to it.

How do you ease your mom guilt?

A letter to my son about the weird things parents do (and never imagined)

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

Dear son,

Last night you screamed for me.

You’re well into age 3, so you’ve been sleeping through the night for a while now. A scream at 2 a.m. is unusual. That means when you cry out in your sleep, as you did last night, it slices right through the dark like an arrow and pierces my dream bubble. (Wait for me, Jon Hamm. I’ll be back soon, I promise.)

The moment I hear your bold, brassy cry, I leap from my bed and run to your side. Like Miss Clavel in the Madeline books, I know at once something is not right.

The world's most adorable boy, sleeping in a bed full of stuffed animals

In this particular instance, however, you screamed because you had to pee.

You are a child who knows how to wake up and use the bathroom by yourself. You’ve done it before. You do it all the time. But last night you were too tired to move. In fact, you shrieked at the very idea of getting out of bed, as though I asked you to do something reprehensible, like cuddle with a rattlesnake.

“No get out of bed,” you whined.

I get it. Trust me, I do. But on this one thing, I had to stand my ground.

“You must get out of bed. You’ll feel so much better,” I coaxed.

“My bed is a boat,” you said, obviously still dreaming. Then you stood at the edge of your mattress and tugged at your pajama pants. “I know! I will pee in the ocean. That is a great idea.”

“Nope. No peeing in the ocean,” I said, reaching for you. “Uh, sharks are in the ocean. And sharks smell pee. And you don’t want sharks to find you, do you?”

You’re a big boy now, so close to being 4 years old, which means when I have to carry you into the bathroom in the middle of the night, you’re heavier than a Volkswagen Beetle.

I held your upper body while my husband, who roused during the ruckus, grabbed your feet. Together we levitated you above the toilet and hoped for the best. Like, imagine a crop duster flying low over a field to spray fertilizer, but an airborne child hovering over a toilet in the dark. That was you.

Once the flow started, it was like a garden hose that has been turned on with full force and has a mind of its own, spraying everything everywhere, dancing away from the very people trying to contain it. After about two weeks, you were finally done peeing.

The world's cutest toddler, standing in cream and black pajamas, smiling

They say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, but I think it should also count with toddler urine and bathrooms. Most of it made it into the bowl — and absolutely none of it was in your bedroom — so I considered that a win.

Once you were finished, I pulled up your miraculously dry pajamas and wrangled you back into your room. As soon as your head hit the pillow and I placed your stuffed cat in your arms, you began to snore.

Your daddy and I were up for much longer.

“This is parenthood,” I said, gazing up at the ceiling.

“Yeah, most of the things we do, I never even imagined we would do,” my husband said. “Gross things. Weird things. Bizarre situations. And it’s just another Sunday night for us.”

Tonight you cried out in your sleep. Again.

This time you had a nightmare about sharks — and that is totally my fault. I’m sorry.

Love, Mommy

Does your child scream out in the night?

Pooparoos are the toys your kids never knew they needed

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Products

Is it just me, or do kids’ toys keep getting weirder and weirder?

Granted, I never really “got” the whole let’s-see-which-tiny-toys-shaped-like-food-or-animals-or-furniture-with-faces-on-them fad. *Cough* Shopkins *Cough* Hatchimals *Cough* But seriously, what is with all of the poop-themed toys and games these days?

My dad gifted the kids this cat that eats and then poops out kibble while making farting noises. (We’ve lovingly nicknamed it “Fart Kitty.”) The same grandfather bought my son Poo-dough. We also have a fart gun that is nothing but a loud speaker with a trigger that prompts a series of explosive, wet-sounding fart noises. And the games Toilet Trouble and Don’t Step In It both sound right up my kids’ alley, too.

Apparently, both tiny toy surprises and poop sell when it comes to kids’ toys. So why not combine the best of both worlds? From the looks of it, that’s exactly what the creators of Pooparoos were thinking.

So here’s the lowdown on this quirky toy, which sells for just under 10 bucks at Walmart. Each unit comes with its own toilet, a mystery Pooparoos pet (one of eight figures,) a pooper scooper, and three mystery pieces of “pet food”/poop.

After your kid finds out which Pooparoos pet is hiding in the potty, apparently they add water to the toilet and then pop in the bags of mystery pet food to reveal which tiny foods are inside.

Finally, your kiddo can make his Pooparoos pet eat the food … and then poop it back out again. Repeat.

Charming little critters, right? (Except, in my opinion, that cupcake looks a little too happy that it’s being shot of the Pooparoos pet’s butt.) See them in action for yourself, in the video below!

If you’re like me, you’re probably looking at the calendar and wondering if this is some elaborate April Fool’s Day joke. But alas, they are real and people seriously buy them.

And honestly? I’m 100-percent positive that my kids would love them. Because poop is hilarious and surprises are fun. And making your fun surprise poop-out other fun surprises? I hate to say it, but Mattel could really be on to something, here.

What do you think of Pooparoos? Do you think your kids would love them?

There’s a Good Chance Game of Thrones Fans Will Never See This Character Again

Although Lord Edmure Tully hasn’t been seen on Game of Thrones since Jaime Lannister used him a pawn to conquer Riverrun, it seemed as though fans may still learn his fate in the show’s final season. However, according to Tobias Menzies—who played Catelyn Stark’s doltish younger brother—the chances of Edmure returning aren’t looking too good.

During a recent interview with Digital Spy, Menzies was asked whether his character is still spending his days locked away in the Frey’s dungeon since Arya Stark used her face-swapping skills to massacre the entire Frey family. “The honest answer is, I have no idea,” he replied. “He’s obviously somewhere in a prison, he’s still around alive somewhere. They’re pretty stingy with their information and I’ve not heard anything from them.”

There’s always the chance that Menzies is giving fans the ol’ Kit Harington run-around. However, considering the rest of the cast has been filming season eight for quite some time, if he is telling the truth, that’s probably a wrap on Edmure.

But not to worry, Menzies is still going to be gracing our television screens: Netflix announced Wednesday that the 44-year-old actor is set to take over the role of Prince Phillip from Matt Smith in season three of The Crown.

Even if your home has its share of “dirty little secrets,” you’re not alone: A 2012 survey sponsored by Kenmore found that nearly half of Americans—49 percent—say they cut corners when vacuuming by skipping areas underneath or behind furniture, and clean only when they see visible dirt on the floor. Here’s Why You Should Never Lend Out Your Credit Card

Lending a friend or family member your credit card is a really bad idea, according to a new national CreditCards.com study.

Of the 49% of credit card holders—past and present—35% of them said they’ve had negative experiences. The most common problem people run into when they allow others to use their credit card: overspending.

Last month, a Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. study revealed that an overwhelming majority (80%) of African Americans are more likely to financially help out a family member than 66% of whites. Could African Americans, in the name of helping out a family member, be putting themselves in financial jeopardy?

“You really are playing with fire when you let someone else use your credit card, so proceed with caution,” CreditCards.com Senior Industry Analyst Matt Schulz said. “Whether they spend more than you anticipated, don’t pay you back, or you never see the card again, ultimately, you are the one who is responsible.”

The study also found that younger people (ages 18–37) faced an unfavorable result compared to 31% of Gen X (ages 38–53) and 26% of Baby Boomers (ages 54–72). Others complained about not getting refunded. Ten percent even said their card was either never returned or lost.

The study concluded that most people who have owned a credit card would let immediate family members borrow it and half of them said they are comfortable with a family member spending at least $ 100. Thirty-nine percent say they would never lend their card to an immediate family member.

What the study found was that the less you make, the more likely you are to be burned. More than half (52%) of low-income earners who have lent their credit cards to someone have had negative experiences. The number drops down to a quarter for those making more than $ 30,000.

50 Cent Admits He Never Owned or Invested In Bitcoin

50 Cent does not, in fact, own or has ever owned any bitcoin. The Queens rapper admitted in court documents that he did not make $ 8 million in bitcoin by accepting the cryptocurrency as a form of payment for his 2014 album, Animal Ambition.

In a court document filed in bankruptcy court, first obtained by The Blast last Friday, rapper Curtis Jackson admitted that he “never owned, does not own, a bitcoin account or any bitcoins and to the best of his knowledge, none of his companies had a bitcoin account from 2014 to the present.”

A third party, Central Nervous, however, did manage the website of G-Unit Records, 50 Cent’s record label from which all his albums and merchandises were sold among other things, bitcoin, the court documents said. Although Central Nervous processed the online sales and accepted bitcoins as payment, the bitcoins accepted were converted to U.S. dollars through Bitpay, and that it was the converted U.S. dollars, not bitcoins, that G-Unit received.

To the best of my knowledge, at no time were any foreign or domestic accounts maintained by me or my business entities to keep either foreign currencies or bitcoin,” Jackson said in the court statement.

The 42-year-old rapper said as long as the publicity he got from the news that he made millions in bitcoin didn’t damage his image or brand, “I usually do not feel the need to publicly deny the reporting” even when the reports are based on “misunderstanding of facts or outright falsehoods.”

When TMZ, a gossip website broke the news in January, the rapper wrote a post on Instagram saying, “I forgot I did that” because he said he had forgotten that he was, in fact, one of the first rappers to accept bitcoin as payments for online transactions.

To prove that he is indeed bankrupt, he had to come clean about the nature of his involvement with the cryptocurrency. View the official court document below:

Why you should never, ever, swing a child by the arms

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

My family learned the hard way just how easy it is for a little kid’s arm to pop out of place and end up with nursemaid’s elbow.

Also known as radial head dislocation or a pulled elbow, nursemaid’s elbow happens when the radius slips out of its normal place at the elbow joint. This typically affects children younger than 4, and it happens when the child is pulled up too hard by the wrist or hand — like swinging him by the arms or lifting him by the hand to help him up a big step. It’s common. And it’s painful.

We were at my nephew’s birthday party last year when it happened. Our then 2-old-daughter was facing my husband and holding his hands while shifting her entire body weight backward. My husband kept pulling her back up to a standing position, sometimes lifting her feet gently off the ground in the process. She thought it was great. Until it wasn’t.

We had no idea what had happened when she started crying. Hard.

It was past nap time, so we figured she was overly tired — or just mad it was time to stop using Daddy as a jungle gym. I held her in my arms until she eventually calmed down and fell asleep. (I guess she just needed a nap, right? Or maybe she was coming down with something?) But then she woke up, still whining. It wasn’t until after we drove home from the party that we noticed she wasn’t using her one arm normally. And she started crying again when I asked her to try to bend it. That’s when I remembered the arm swinging — and nagging my husband to be careful at the time — and knew something was seriously wrong.

Since it was Sunday evening, we ended up taking H to the emergency room. The ER doctor suspected she had a pulled elbow right away. She put one hand in the crease of her elbow and then did some weird maneuver to pop it back into place. H immediately stopped whimpering and had full use of her arm again. I’m so glad we took her in because as it turns out, trying to pop the arm back into place on your own could cause further harm.

My husband felt so bad for unintentionally causing our daughter pain. She hasn’t had any issues since this incident, but still. Lesson learned. Don’t make our mistake!

Topshop jeans: the styles that will never let you down, from the Joni to the Baxter

For the initiated as well as the uninitiated

topshop jeans

I’ll never forget my first pair of Topshop jeans. A pair of black Jamie jeans for those of you asking. To say it was a revelation is an understatement. I’d come to the UK to study, and before I set foot in Toppers, I didn’t know jeans could come in different lengths, well jeans I could afford that is. At 5f3″, I was forever getting my mum to hem my trousers for me (thanks mum).

After finding that perfect pair of skinny black jeans that I could literally wear as soon as I left the shop, I couldn’t go back, and have worn Topshop jeans ever since. They seriously last for years. These days, I’m more into their  wide leg culotte and cropped mum jean styles, though I’ve still got my pair of trusted skinny jeans too.

For those of you who aren’t already converts (many of you obviously are as one pair of jeans is sold every 10 seconds in Topshop), here’s a quick guide of which jeans to buy depending on what you’re after.

Topshop Jamie jeans

As i’ve mentioned before, the Jamie jeans are the ultimate style when it comes to finding the perfect skinny, and it will flatter most shapes. It’s a high rise so it holds the tummy in, and is cropped at the ankle which is how I like my jeans, though if you prefer them longer, just pick a slightly longer length.

Topshop Joni jeans

If the Jamie isn’t quite skinny enough for you, then the Joni will provide that spray-on denim look you’re after. It’s super stretchy and a high rise, giving it a slightly vintage twist.

Topshop Leigh jeans

If you’re looking for that timeless denim piece, then the Leigh is for you. The mid-rise, skinny style is one of Topshop’s most popular jeans.

Topshop petite jeans

There’s nothing more disappointing than jeans gone baggy after a wash, especially if you’re petite. Luckily, most Topshop jeans come in Petite version meaning you’ve always got the perfect fit.

Topshop tall jeans

I mentioned that Topshop was a saviour for short girls, but the same goes for tall ones, as there is a Tall range which goes up to 36″ length.

Parents of Gymnasts Sexually Abused by Larry Nassar Say They’ll ‘Never Get Rid of the Guilt’

(LANSING, Mich.) — Some parents thought they were misinterpreting the doctor’s techniques. Others assumed their children were lying or mistaken.

But as more details emerged, the mothers and fathers had to face an awful truth: A renowned sports doctor had molested their daughters.

These parents, many fighting back tears, confronted Larry Nassar during his long sentencing hearing, lamenting their deep feelings of guilt and wondering how they could have missed the abuse that sometimes happened when they were in the same room.

“I willingly took my most precious gift in this world to you, and you hurt her, physically, mentally and emotionally. And she was only 8,” Anne Swinehart told Nassar. “I will never get rid of the guilt that I have about this experience.”

Many of the young athletes had come to Nassar seeking help with gymnastics injuries. He was sentenced Wednesday to up to 175 years in prison after admitting sexually assaulting patients under the guise of medical treatment while employed by Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body, which also trains Olympians.

He counted on his charm and reputation to deflect any questions. He was so brazen that he sometimes molested patients in front of their parents, shielding the young girls with his body or a sheet. His clinic on the university campus was decorated with signed photos of Olympic stars, bolstering his credentials to star-struck athletes and their families.

Parents who voiced concern say Nassar dismissed their questions. The mother of one 12-year-old victim said she questioned Nassar about not wearing gloves and he “answered in a way that made me feel stupid for asking.”

“I told myself, ‘He’s an Olympic doctor, be quiet,’” the woman said. “The guilt that I feel, and that my husband feels, that we could not protect our child, is crippling.”

Some victims said they were so young that they did not understand they had been abused until they were adults, so did not tell anyone.

What’s more, coaches told the parents that Nassar was the best and could help their daughters achieve their dreams.

Paul DerOhannesian, a former prosecutor in New York who has written a book on sexual assault trials, said abusers in positions of authority often hold “tremendous power” over both children and parents. Some parents also fear what will happen to their child if they report abuse, and children often have difficulty talking to parents about anything sexual.

“It shouldn’t turn into a situation where we blame parents,” DerOhannesian said.

But even when Nassar’s abuse was reported to coaches and law enforcement authorities, many of them did not believe Nassar had done anything wrong, causing many parents and girls to second-guess themselves.

Donna Markham recounted how her then-12-year-old daughter Chelsey began sobbing in the car as they were headed home after a session with Nassar.

Her daughter said, “Mom, he put his fingers in me and they weren’t gloved,” then begged her mother not to confront Nassar, fearing it would derail her gymnastics career.

The next day, Donna Markham told her daughter’s coach, who did not believe it. Markham said she also asked other mothers if their daughters had mentioned inappropriate touching by Nassar. “They gave me a look like, ‘You’re lying to me,’” she told the judge, choking back tears.

Chelsey Markham quit gymnastics not long afterward and entered a “path of destruction” and self-loathing and eventually killed herself.

“It all started with him,” Markham told the judge. “It has destroyed our family. We used to be so close. … I went through four years of intense therapy trying to deal with all this, until I could finally accept the fact that this was not my fault.”

Some parents did not believe their daughters at first, finding it incomprehensible that the man they trusted could have done anything wrong.

Kyle Stephens, whose family was close with Nassar’s, said he repeatedly abused her from age 6 to 12 during family visits to his home near Lansing, Michigan. But her parents did not believe her when she finally told them and made her apologize to Nassar.

Years later, her father realized she was telling the truth, and she blamed his 2016 suicide partly on the guilt he felt.

“Perhaps you have figured it out by now, but little girls don’t stay little forever,” Stephens told Nassar. “They grow into strong women that return to destroy your world.”

Dancer Olivia Venuto, who said Nassar abused her from 2006, when she was 12, until 2013, said her parents did not believe her at first and sent Nassar messages of support after a 2016 Indianapolis Star investigation revealed the abuse.

Swinehart said that when her 15-year-old daughter, Jillian, told her she had been abused, “I tried to believe that there was some medical necessity for this treatment,” she said. “The alternative was just too horrific, to think that I had let this happen to my child when I was sitting right there.”

Police in Michigan investigated Nassar twice. One inquiry from 2004 concluded that his actions were medically appropriate. Another investigation in 2014 and 2015 did not result in charges.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who sentenced Nassar, told parents not to feel guilty. “The red flags may have been there, but they were designed to be hidden,” she said.

Swinehart said other people can’t know how they would have reacted in the same situation.

“Quit shaming and blaming the parents,” she said. “Trust me, you would not have known. And you would not have done anything differently.”

10 Reasons Why I Wish I Never Bought That Fixer-Upper!

Who doesn’t harbor fantasies of transforming a seen-better-days abode into a showplace? Whether hoping to live in the resulting residence, use it as a rental property, or flip it for profit, it’s natural to think: “I’m pretty handy, so how tough could it be?” Ask Andy Kogan, a real estate professional in Kansas City, Kansas, and he’ll tell you: Pretty tough! “It was fun at first, then fun with problems, and finally it was just problems,” says Kogan, who bought a 1957 two-bedroom ranch for $ 115,000 that he hoped to fix up and turn over quickly. While the kitchen and bathroom remodels were fairly simple, other issues kept cropping up. The job came in $ 15,000 over budget—and Kogan reaped a mere $ 500 when the house finally sold. Never Say Never in Fashion and Style

Number 19 of my top 25 style tips goes like this: “Never say never in fashion and style because you’ll be surprised at how your feelings about a look, colour or item can change over time.”

Never say never to a vibe, colour, fabric, or silhouette, because you might have to eat your words later. Rather say, no thank you for now, but maybe later. Over time your feelings about a look can change because the factors that affect our style can change. Our eyes also adjust to new looks over time. Sometimes you can’t imagine wearing something right up to the point that you fall in love with it.

Here are some of the times I said no or never, and then had to eat my words.

1. Skinny Jeans

Back in 2006, I said I couldn’t go back to wearing skinny jeans because they weren’t as elegant or flattering as bootcuts. But my ‘80s gene went ahead and bought an inexpensive pair of skinnies from Mango a couple of months later to see if I could get used to them. Hubby Greg loved them right away and that was that. It took me a whole five minutes to get used to them, and I’ve been wearing skinnies ever since. I especially love them tucked into boots, equestrian style. Here are some old outfit pics from 2011.

Skinnies

2. Harem Pants

When harem pants began surfacing in 2008, I thought they were awful and said no way to the dropped crotch. In 2009 I went to Israel where I saw women of all ages wear them with panache, and it promptly changed my mind. I came back from that trip and bought a dressy black pair that tickled my fancy right away. I love wearing my harem pants, which are too avant-garde to date. They are still going strong nine years later. Here’s a harem pants outfit from 2015 that I wore to a cocktail party.

Harem Pants

3. Earth Tones

I said I would never wear earth tones, but boy was I wrong. In 2013, I saw a toffee pullover at J.Crew that reminded me of my late Mum who wore earth tones with the best of them. Feeling adventurous, I tried it on. Because it was very sentimental, it followed me home. I loved that jumper until it pilled a few years later. I’ve subsequently bought a toffee trench coat, turtleneck, cinnamon items, cognac booties and belt, and have substantial olive and burgundy capsules. The earth tone joke’s on me. Here’s a classic equestrian look from 2014 in a toffee turtleneck.

Earth Tones

4. Boho

I used to say I was as boho as Karl Lagerfeld. Well, that was codswallop because there’s a romantic, soft and flouncy integrity about a boho blouse that really appeals to me. Although my preference is more for boho-lite than hardcore boho, I will absolutely wear a boho blouse in the Summer because it’s pretty, breezy and comfortable. Here are flashbacks from 2015 and 2016 with my first few boho-lite blouses.

Boho

This collection shows my current assortment of boho blouses.

Over to you. I bet you’ve said you wouldn’t wear a colour, silhouette, look or vibe, until you did just that. You’re in good company. Time to own up!

Stunning MacBook Touch concept shows off the hybrid machine Apple will never make

MacBook Touch

Over the years, Apple executives have made their position on a hybrid iOS/Mac device incredibly clear, which is to say that they think it’s a horrible idea. While Apple has certainly researched the feasibility of developing such devices, even going so far as to file a few patents for a touchscreen iMac a few years ago, it ultimately decided against bringing such a product to market.

Speaking on the matter, Tim Cook a few years back said that hybrid devices run the risk of offering consumers a subpar user experience on all fronts. “Because what that would wind up doing, or what we’re worried would happen, is that neither experience would be as good as the customer wants,” Cook explained. “So we want to make the best tablet in the world and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either. You’d begin to compromise in different ways.”

‘The Goal Is Never to Divide.’ Last Jedi Director Addresses Backlash From Star Wars Fans

The Last Jedi may have debuted to the second-biggest domestic box office opening of all time—behind only its Star Wars predecessor, The Force Awakens—but it was met by mixed reviews from moviegoers.

While critics seemed to love The Last Jedi, scoring it at 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, hardcore Star Wars fans were more divided — Episode VIII has only a 53 percent audience rating on the site.

However, director Rian Johnson has said that he believes the controversy surrounding the movie was an inevitable result of the saga moving forward. After being asked what he thinks of Jedi‘s polarizing nature, Johnson took to Twitter to explain his stance.

“The goal is never to divide or make people upset, but I do think the conversations that are happening were going to have to happen at some point if [Star Wars] is going to grow, move forward and stay vital,” Johnson tweeted on Thursday.

You’ll never see an elf on my shelf

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

I can’t boast a lot of smug moments as a mom. When I’m not plagued by self-doubt, I’m overcome with mom guilt. Last week my 3-year-old blew his nose on my sweater, and I thought, “Game over. I’ve failed.”

But a couple days ago some of my mom friends were giggling over a wine glass that says “Because Elf on the Shelf” — as in, Elf on the Shelf is what drives them to drink. And in that instant, I let the wave of smug rise up and wash over me. It was smug of Biblical proportions. Moses could’ve parted it.

That’s because my family has no Elf on the Shelf.

A red Christmas ornament sits on an empty mantle

We will never have Elf on the Shelf.

Elf on the Shelf = 0.

Maggie = Winning.

Elf in the Shelf is completely banned from my home. It’s one of several rules I established for myself before I ever had a child. But unlike the pre-kid rules I’ve already broken (i.e. no screen time until age 5, always eat food on plates, bathe every day), this is one I intend to keep.

Trust me, I’m not some kind of Scrooge who stomps around during the holidays all “Bah humbug!” I’m a Hallmark Christmas movie addict with a big tree, sparkly ornaments, a fat wreath on the door, stockings by the fireplace, the whole bit. If someone is decking the halls, it’s probably me. I’ve got your fa-la-las right here.

I also love passing holiday traditions along to my son. Last year I introduced him to St. Nicholas Day on Dec. 6, which my family has celebrated for generations. This year he received his first Advent calendar.

But the elf stays out of the picture.

A tiny pink-flocked Christmas tree with a toy sleigh. No freaking elf in sight.

First off, I don’t understand the point. This scout elf is supposed to report naughty behavior to Santa — all the while engaging in mischief and causing mayhem in your house? That doesn’t even make sense, unless your goal is to teach your child a lesson in hypocrisy.

Also that danged elf sends a chill down my spine, and not just because it’s cold outside. He’s a sweet, cherubic version of Big Brother, monitoring your every move and reporting back to the authorities. Laugh if you want, but some experts warn that a toy like this prepares your child to live in a future police state. Digital technology professor Laura Pinto told the Washington Post in 2014, “we argue that if a kid is okay with this bureaucratic elf spying on them in their home, it normalizes the idea of surveillance and in the future restrictions on our privacy might be more easily accepted.”

But most of all, Elf on the Shelf creates too much stress during a season that is already fraught with it. Some days I’m so tired, I can’t remember to take my contacts out at night. You think I can hide an elf each night in funny and increasingly creative ways? Nope. I’m tapped out.

We’ll get our glad tidings of joy elsewhere, no creepy gnomes allowed.

Have you also banned Elf on the Shelf?

Pippa and Kate Middleton’s Coat Trend Will Never Go Out of Style

With Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s impending wedding and Kate Middleton’s pregnancy, there are more eyes on the British royal family’s personal lives than ever before. Of course, there’s one thing we’ll always focus on: their impeccable style. Store Visits: Pasadena’s The BlokeIf you’ve never been to…

Store Visits: Pasadena’s The Bloke

If you’ve never been to Southern California, I will say this: Pasadena is an odd town. On the one hand, it has a sense of place that’s tough to find in a region where outside of central Los Angeles, things can feel like an uninterrupted exurb. It’s a real town, with big trees, third- and fourth-generation civic leaders and two really kick-ass parades. On the other, it has a deep conservative bent, and a casual So-Cal feel that’s more Cheesecake Factory than cutting edge.

It makes sense, then, that Pasadena would be the home of one of California’s odder simulacra: a recreation of London’s Burlington Arcade on an otherwise unassuming commercial street. Most of the shops are entirely unremarkable – there’s no Penhaligon’s perfumes, though there is a store that only sells houseplants.

Into this odd environment steps The Bloke, a new shop which specializes in the intersection between traditional English aesthetics and American Ivy style, with a dash of mod for good measure. Owner Jeffery Plansker is new to retail, having led a career as a director in advertising to this point, but the store has a personal feel.

The square footage isn’t huge, but I found shirts and ties from Drake’s, sleepwear from Hilditch & Key and trousers from Tellason among the options on display. There were Sanders Playboy chukkas, a few Alden models and hats (I bought one) from the British stalwart Bates. There are also a few preppy classics, like some killer needlepoint belts and a rack of vintage club ties.

Among the cased accessories were some favorites of this blog, like the Junghans Max Bill wrist watch and Braun travel alarm clocks. There’s also a small browsing library of books on style (and lifestyle) from the owner’s personal collection, which included the braille edition of Playboy that our director Ben is reading above. There are also books and magazines for sale, including new copies of The Heritage Post, The Rake and Monocle and back issues of Japanese favorites like Vintage Life.

In an adjoining room is a pop-up space – it’s currently occupied by an installation of records, books and art from Groove Merchant in San Francisco. I brought home a couple of albums (Ray Barreto and the Fania All-Stars, if you’re keeping track), as well as a few back issues of the great music magazine Wax Poetics. The shop’s manager told me they’re getting new records every few weeks and that there will be further developments in the space every few months.

In can be hard to convince an Angeleno to cross town, but hopefully it won’t be too much to ask for the many Northeast Angelenos to stop by The Bloke next door in Pasadena. It’s a lovely shop with a breezy vibe and a air of sincere personality.
