Dealing with a screaming child on a plane, according to flight attendants

Ahhhh, is there anything better than going on vacation? You’ve got a week off work, you have no annoying co-workers to deal with, you’ve bought a whole new closet to show off your beach body, and you are SO ready to just drink cocktails in the sun for a whole darn week. Absolute bliss. Of course, your vacation doesn’t just start when you reach your final destination. Instead, the moment you leave your house and make your way to the airport, you enter extreme vacation-mode. You treat yourself to a nice breakfast, you spend an absurd amount of money on a book you could definitely get cheaper elsewhere, and you enjoy a little drink in the bar beforehand (y’know, to settle your nerves). Yet, nothing will snap you out of your vacation-mode quicker than a screaming child…

The answer? Not a lot…

So, you may be wondering what you can do about a screaming child. The answer? Not a lot. Yep, we know this wasn’t the answer you were looking for, but it’s true. As much as it is not your place to punish a random child, it’s also not the airline’s place. In their eyes, they have no obligation or power to do anything about a screaming child. If they’re nice, they might politely ask the parents to calm down their child, but they cannot make them do anything. Luckily, you don’t just have to sit there and let this kid ruin your vacation. There are some ways to get some good out of a pretty bad situation…

They might be able to compensate you

No, they won’t give you a free seat upgrade or free flights for life, but flight attendants might be able to compensate you to make you feel more comfortable if you are sat near to the screaming child. They might offer you a free drink, or bag of chips, or even just a free pair of earplugs to make things even easier for you.

Help other parents be more prepared

If you have been on a flight with a screaming child, you’ll know that it can majorly impact your enjoyment of the flight, or even prevent you from getting some much-needed sleep. Yet, if you can help other parents be more prepared, you might be able to help future passengers and their will to live. In fact, the best way to ensure that a child is quiet for the duration of a flight is to ensure that the baby is fed and watered before the plane takes off. If they can also get the baby to sleep before you board the plane – that would be a lifesaver. If all else fails, just make sure that you have a pacifier and entertainment to keep them busy.

Keep yourselves entertained

At the end of the day, listening to a screaming child on your flight is only going to make things worse for you. Instead, you need to try and block out the noise and keep yourself entertained so that you do not hone in on the noise. By taking your book, watching a movie or simply listening to music, you will be able to find solace in the fact that you are trying everything you possibly can to block out the screaming child.

You need to patient

Also, you just need to be patient. While the noise is irritating and may ruin your vacation vibe, you also need to realize that flying in a tin can can’t be comfortable for a baby or toddler. It will scare them, it will confuse them, and it will make them feel uneasy – which means that they will probably cry. Sometimes you just need to realize that that’s life!

Having a screaming child on your flight is not something you would choose to have, but sometimes you just have to give in and let them do their thing.

10 things you should never get on a plane without

If you’re just as obsessed with traveling as we are, you’ll know that packing for a vacation is one of the hardest things to do. Sure, you can get excited about wandering around temples, frolicking on a beach, exploring rainforests and other fun activities, but if you haven’t packed the right essentials you might be turning as red as a tomato on the beach, being bitten within an inch of your life in the rainforest, and walking around with broken shoes in the temples. It’ll be a mess. Want our help? We travel all the time, and these are the 10 things we never get on a plane without.

A multi-functional carry-on

Gone are the days of simply taking a backpack as your flight carry-on – the world of traveling has advanced. Nowadays, you can buy awesome multi-functional bags that is a mix between a backpack and a tiny suitcase. Despite their size, these kinds of carry-on cases have enough space to carry everything you need for the plane journey, as well as being both practical and fashionable.

Wireless earbuds

There’s nothing worse than opening your bag to find that your headphones have got caught up in all of your other belongings, or saturated with the hand lotion that popped open mid-flight. This is why we always opt for wireless headphones that you can simply keep in your pocket – away from anything that might hurt or harm them. Nowadays, these kinds of headphones normally have a 6-8 hour charge on them, which is perfect for a mid to long-haul flight.

Comfortable and supportive socks

It’s no secret that sitting on a plane for hours on end is not comfortable in the slightest, which is why should always take it upon yourself to try anything to be comfortable. One of the best ways to do this is to wear your most comfortable and most supportive socks. This way, your feet will feel warm, toasty and soft as you sit in the stagnant air of the airplane.

A multi-purpose toiletry bag

If you hadn’t already guessed, we’re all about using things that can be used for different purposes, which is why you should get a multi-purpose toiletry bag. When you’re traveling a lot, it is not practical to carry various different bags for different categories of cosmetics and toiletries. By buying yourself an all-in-one bag that has separate compartments, you will save yourself a lot of hassle.

A toothbrush you’re used to

During ours travels, we’ve realized that the toothbrushes you receive in hotels or on long flights are often painful and uncomfortable – which is why it’s always important to travel with a toothbrush you’re used to. Whether you want something a bit fancy, or whether you’re used to a cheap dollar toothbrush from the local store, it’ll save you a lot of hassle and bleeding gums.

A multi-purpose wallet

You might be wondering what other purpose a wallet could have – but it’s actually pretty nifty! You can now buy wallets and purses that double up as battery packs for your cell phone, which is perfect for a long flight or a day of traveling. Instead of finding yourself with no battery, you can simply plug it into your purse and charge it up as you go.

A personal backpack

You may have your multi-purpose carry-on, but this bag is not practical for wandering around small side streets, checking out traditional markets, or even surviving a flight. This is why a personal backpack is one of the 10 things we never get on a plane without. This is where you can carry everything from your water to a good book, to your sunglasses, to your headphones and more. By using a personal backpack, you can separate your important flight essentials from your luxuries.

A fancy phone case

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the items you need to take on a flight, which is why it’s best to keep as many things as possible together. This is why it’s a good idea to invest in fancy phone cases that have space for important cards such as ID or bank card. This way, you do not have to fumble around for a purse if you need these items, as they will always be with your phone.

Comfy clothes

Just as you don’t want to step on a plane without comfy socks, you also don’t want to step on a plane without comfortable clothes. When you’re stuck in one position for a few hours, the last thing you want is to be constricted by your clothing. So, steer clear of tight clothing such as denim, and opt for looser items such as leggings, sweaters and more.

Quality skincare

There are a few issues with airplanes; they’re not totally clean, and they’re extremely dry – and these factors can wreak havoc on your body. If you find your skin feels dry during every single flight, then start arming yourself with quality skin care, such as hand lotion and cleansing lotion to avoid bacteria.

If you travel as much as we do, you’ve learned what works and what doesn’t when you’re in-flight – and after many years, we’ve come to the conclusion that these 10 things are essential. Trust us!

The airplane etiquette: what to do and what to avoid in a plane

Airplane travel is never comfortable, and there are very few people who actually enjoy flights of any length. No matter the country, no matter the airline, no matter the flight length, there will always be certain aspects of flying that you hate. So what is Airplane Etiquette? What do you do, and what do you avoid in a plane?

Think a few steps ahead

There’s nothing worse than the line at security. Waiting for twenty minutes in line in a hot and claustrophobic room, worried you’re going to set the buzzer off (even though you know you won’t) is made even worse when the people in front of you are up next and are all of a tizz, and completely unprepared for the screening process. Making yourself more prepared while you’re in line can cut your waiting time down drastically. So take off your shoes, take off any coats, take everything out of your pockets and put your bags in one of the trays… and voila, you’re on the other side.

If you need to recline your chair, be polite

So you’re sitting comfortably in your assigned seat when *BASH* – the person in front of you has reclined their seat right into your knees. Taking advantage of reclining seats is a must, especially for long-haul flights, but be courteous about it. If you can, let the person behind you know that you are about to recline your seat. Or even better, ask them! This way they can be prepared, and you can get full use out of your recliner chair without having to deal with the ‘accidental’ kicks in the chair you receive during your flight.

Be aware of your children

Children aren’t easily controlled, and we all sympathize with this. However, letting your child run up and down the aisle, scream, or jump over the occupied seats is not going to make your other passengers very happy. Children are the parent’s responsibility, and it is important to keep them in check. We appreciate this isn’t always feasible, but we also appreciate the effort.

Plan your convenience breaks at a convenient time

Going to the toilet is not something you can plan very well. And needing a wee is an inevitable eventuality. But knowing when to and when not to go up to the bathroom is what makes a good passenger a great passenger. If you see the cabin crews walking down the aisle with their food cart, then it is not a good time to get up and try and wiggle your way through to the other end of the airplane. Always try to get up when the aisles are clear.

Get off the plane calmly and efficiently

Everyone is eager to get off the airplane as quickly as possible when you land – it’s not just you. If the doors have yet to open, don’t all crowd down to them, as this will hinder the process. Instead, get off in a calm, orderly fashion. This will even make the whole process go quicker, and you’ll be out of the glorified tin can in no time.

Don’t force conversations

A lot of people use airplane journeys as a chance to relax, listen to some music, watch some good movies or read a good book. The last thing anyone wants is a seat neighbor trying to force a conversation or friendship out of them if they don’t want it. Exchange niceties, a few hello’s and greetings, but gage their reaction. If they don’t want to talk to you and are not engaging, it’s pretty obvious they don’t want to talk. If they do carry on the conversation then great, you’ve made a new friend!

Don’t use up all of the space in the overhead cabins

Keeping your personal belongings safe on a flight is incredibly important to airline passengers, and they do not like having to keep their bags under their feet for a nine-hour flight – and you will have one grumpy and uncomfortable neighbor. Always keep your carry-on bags small so that everyone can use the space provided. And remember to never stow your bags horizontally… because the flight attendants will tell you off.

11 Beauty Products That’ll Save Your Skin From (Shudder) Recycled Plane Air

Travel — or rather, stale, recycled airplane air — is notorious for doing a number on your skin. It sucks all the good things out of your face, leaving it tight, dry and annoyingly breakout-prone. Still, dreaded plane air is a necessary evil one must face in order to cross great distances — for pleasure, business, familial obligation, etc. — in a timely manner.

On the bright side, these days, the general population is pretty obsessed with skin care. You’ll often see people performing entire hydration-minded skin care routines in-flight without attracting so much as a side-glance from their neighbor. In short, there’s no need to suffer through dryness and dullness for the sake of social decorum, or anything else.

With that in mind, check out the slideshow above for some genius travel beauty tips, plus 11 TSA-approved (aka under-3.4 ounce) skin care products that, when used correctly, will prevent you from touching down looking like a shriveled-up prune. Throw them in a plastic baggie, throw that in your carry-on, arrive looking impossibly dewy and fresh.

And if you’re more of an audio-visual learner, check out beauty blogger Tamira Jarrel’s simple(-ish) in-flight travel routine in the video below.

Bon voyage.

Remembering the Brooklyn Dodger Who Hijacked a Plane

The first person to attempt to hijack a domestic commercial airplane in the United States was a Brooklyn Dodger.

Commercial air travel was not a common way to get around in 1935. Most baseball teams, like most people, still took trains for long distance travel. Attempts to hijack a plane were rare.

And yet, Len Koenecke has the dubious distinction of being the first person to attempt to hijack an airplane inside the United States, in 1935. He also played baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and that was the cause of his crime.

How much your plane ticket actually costs

It’s fair to say that we’re utterly obsessed with traveling. Yep, you’ve caught us – we’ve got the traveling bug. However, in today’s day and age, it can prove especially difficult to save up the money for your dream location. Not only do you have the accommodation, but you also have the food, the fuel, the activities, and of course, the plane tickets. Nowadays, it seems as if we’re paying more for the airline tickets than anything else – but how much does your airline ticket actually cost? Well, we’re basing this on an example $ 300 return ticket from Illinois to North Carolina as it was sold last year.

Taxes and fees

We’re so used to paying taxes and fees, we almost don’t think of them anymore – and simply hand over our cash without asking any questions. But do you really know how much extra you’re paying for your airline tickets? Well, these fees make up 21.1% of the total cost of the airline ticket. This means that the trip to Raleigh from Peoria, and back again will cost you around $ 63.35 more than the base price because you’re paying the standard 7.5% tax on the ticket, as well as extra fees. So where is this money going?

Facility charge

Many of us don’t realize that each flying passenger has to pay to land at a particular airport. In fact, every single passenger has to pay this $ 4.50 a facility charge – which will be added to the airline ticket. Because this particular return ticket from Peoria to Raleigh stopped over in Chicago, the plane landed four times, which means this airline charged the customer $ 18 to simply land the plane at the destination.

Segment tax

Another tax added to your final airline ticket price is the segment tax. The government will charge each passenger for every single takeoff and landing during your flight – and charge $ 4.10 for each. Once again, this passenger has taken off and landed four times, so $ 16.40 is added to the final bill. These taxes go towards the Federal Aviation Administration and the flight Improvement Program.

September 11 Security Fee

Since the September 11 attacks, airline checks have been much more scrupulous. Now, you can stand for hours waiting to go through security, getting your bags and your bodies thoroughly checked to ensure the devastating disaster never happens again. After this attack, the government and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) brought in the new September 11 Security Fee, which charges passengers $ 5.60 every time they pass through security. This is added to the final bill.

Baseline ticket price

All in all, these extra taxes and fees add an extra $ 63.35 to your final airline ticket price. So, the ticket you’ve paid $ 300 would have only cost you $ 236.65 without all of the added extras. This baseline price pays for the airline fees; including staff salaries, fuel, and the upkeep of the planes. In the grand scheme of themes, these ticket prices are much more manageable without these fees – but it seems these fees are here to stay and drive up the price of our tickets.

In a world full of taxes and fees, we have learned to live with the fact that these fees and taxes exist, but it is still interesting to know how much your plane ticket REALLY costs.

This is the scary reason why you should never board a plane first

Oh.

Words by Jadie Troy-Pryde

While the British summer has come and gone already, most of us are jetting off in a last ditch attempt to catch some sun abroad. But before you jump on that plane and fly off on holiday, there’s something you should know about the plane.

If you’ve read the secrets that the airlines don’t want passengers to know you probably feel quite clued up on plane etiquette – you’ll know how to calm anxiety during a flight, and why flight attendants warn you to never walk around without shoes.

Before you’ve even stepped foot on the plane, you’re probably armed with hand luggage and ready to race on so that you can drop your bags and get settled into your seat before everyone else. However, boarding the plane first could actually be really terrible for your health.

A study published in the American Physical Society journal suggests that you are more likely to catch a bug if you’re too eager to hop aboard. The researchers conducted the study to find out whether illness spreads during a flight if just one passenger happens to be ill, and in creating a mathematical model based on different boarding scenarios they discovered that those with first class and priority boarding tickets were more likely to become infected.

In order to reduce the risk of passengers catching a bug, the researchers advocate a system that allows passengers to board from the front and back of the plane simultaneously. In this instance, people with an illness are less likely to be walking past all those sitting at the front end of the plane. It sort of balances out how far the germs go.

So word of warning if you’re a bit of a germophobe – slow down when it comes to joining the boarding queue…

WASHINGTON (AP) — A low-flying Russian airplane created a buzz in the nation’s capital on Wednesday, but it turns out the surveillance flight over the Capitol, Pentagon and other sites was cleared by the U.S. government under a long-standing global treaty.

Man Proposes To Girlfriend On Romantic Plane Ride, Immediately Throws Up

When Darrell Hamilton Jr., decided to propose to his girlfriend, Rheanna Lopez, he wanted it to be memorable.

Well, it was, but not in the way he intended, expected or, frankly, wanted.

Last month, Hamilton took Lopez on a plane ride of the Blossom Trail, an area near Fresno, California, where fruit trees start blossoming in late February.

Hamilton, a video editor for KFSN TV, has been dating Lopez for two years and knew he wanted to marry her since last year.

“I planned it for so long,” he told Inside Edition.

But he never planned on getting motion sickness during the flight.

“The only thing was really on my mind was wanting to get it over with,” he said.

The video shows Hamilton showing Lopez the ring and “Will you marry me?”

Seconds later, he vomits on the floor.

“I just went into help mode,” Lopez said. “I didn’t know how to react. I was in shock.”

Hamilton admits his girlfriend had trouble getting her own bearings ― emotionally, that is.

“She was really surprised,” he told the New York Post. “She was caught off guard and had mixed emotions because I started throwing up. She didn’t know what to do. She was concerned about me.”

Lopez finally decided to pat him tenderly on the back while handing him a sweater to wipe his face.

Oh, and she did say yes.

Under the circumstances, their first kiss as an engaged couple wasn’t a lip-smacking smooch fest. Instead, they each kissed their fingers and touched them together.

Since the proposal was such as a challenge, it’s understandable they haven’t made wedding plans yet.

Still, Hamilton is already planning his life with Lopez.

“I have a son from a previous relationship and me and Rheanna don’t have any kids together,” Hamilton told ABC News. “So maybe starting a family with a child of our own and being a role model for the both of them, and for her.”

How to Bring a Pumpkin Pie on the Plane

2014-11-24-pumpkinpieplanemh.jpg

Nothing says adulthood like learning to make a pumpkin pie from scratch. I’ve already started force-feeding friends pumpkin and salty honey pies in prep for a real gutfest.

The problem is that this year I won’t be heading home until the last minute or so. This means I won’t have any time to bake the pie in time for Thanksgiving because I usually like to make it a day or two in advance to let the flavors meld together. Unfortunately, this means I’ll probably have to prebake the pie and carry it onto the plane. Thankfully, there’s no real TSA rule that forbids pies on planes.

I’ve carried anywhere from meringues and cream puffs to desktop computers with me so I guess I’ve kinda cornered the market on carrying weird things on planes. (I almost once took a guy up on his offer to swap his first-class seat in exchange for several boxes of Girl Scout cookies.) Pumpkin pie, in comparison, is easy to carry on a plane and there’s more than several ways to do it.

Skip the check-in. These are the type of things you want to stow underneath the seatin front of you; the purse can go in the overhead bin for once. I’d highly suggest bringing a pie that has at least been allowed to rest for at least one night in the refrigerator; freshly baked pies will have a harder time surviving the trip. The pies should keep pretty well at room temperature, whether it’s for 30 minutes or five hours.

The easiest way to transport pies are to put them in a pie box. If I want something slightly sturdier since, ahem, I can be quite the klutz, I would opt for a pie carrier like this Pyrex Portable Pie Plate. (The major downside is that you just have to carry it back on the return trip. Ugh.) After spending all that time butchering and pureeing a bonafide pumpkin, it may be worth it though.

There’s a lot to suggest most people are probably overthinking and overworrying. MetaFilter user brainmouse points out a few years ago:

My sister recently flew with two pies that we made. They were wrapped in plastic wrap and then in standard cheapo disposable cardboard pie-carriers. There was a pecan pie and a berry pie. I believe she put them under the seat in front of her and was careful not to step on them and there was no problem getting through security (with the exception of the apparently good-natured security guard making jokes about needing to know what flavor they were before he decided whether or not to confiscate. But seriously, it was fine). They made it home just fine and were delicious.

If you’ve gone pie-crazy and plan to carry on multiple pies, the only thing that happens is the klutz factor gets amplified. Martha Stewart via The Kitchn suggests using bamboo steamer baskets to transport more than one pie for an elegant, tiered solution. Better yet, plenty of these baskets span 9 or 10 inches in diameter, which is pretty much the ideal size. This is actually my favorite suggestion.

An unusual pie solution. (Ginny / Flickr) An unusual pie solution. (Ginny / Flickr)

There’s a couple of other methods, including this one from Chowhound user erican (for those truly serious about their food and pie):

I used a largish tupperware cake holder ($ 10 from target) to carry them. After putting the first pie on the base, I put the ring from a large springform pan around it and tightened it. I put a plate on top of the springform base, and the second pie on top of that. Then I tucked in dishcloths around the bottom of both pies to keep them from shifting inside the container. I have used this method for carrying pies on long walks and car rides as well, and it always works like a charm… you have to be sure that the crust on the lower pie does not overlap the rim of the pie pan, or it will get crushed by the springform.

At the very least, it’s a good idea to have at least some liner or padding around the edges if you’re just throwing it into a box to prevent the pie from shifting and being destroyed. No one wants to eat a squash-ed pie.
