Organizers of Berlin 032c Presents: Reference I Festival Reveal a Few More Details

At a small press conference here late Friday, the powers that be moved to fill in some of the informational gaps behind the new interdisciplinary happening, 032c Presents: Reference I Festival.
As reported April 26, a Gucci and Welt-hosted prelaunch dinner to celebrate the new project left more questions open than answered. At the follow-up session, the festival’s founders, Maria Koch and Thom Bettridge of contemporary culture magazine 032c; Mumi Haiati, ceo of fashion and lifestyle communications agency Reference Studios; art historian and gallerist Robert Grunenberg, and the festival’s special guest and cocurator Hans-Ulrich Obrist, curator of the Serpentine Gallery London, laid down a few more facts. Spanning fashion, design, art and technology in various forms including performances, installations, discussions, and interdisciplinary collaborations of all sorts, the festival will be held for a 24-hour period at Berlin’s most famous club, Berghain.
So far, so good.
Contrary to previous reports linking Reference Berlin I to Berlin Art Week in late September, the festival will be held on one of the last Saturdays in October, the final date to be determined as soon as the club’s owners return from holiday. It might have made sense to link the two events had Art Week and the

JW Anderson Presents His Co-Ed Fall/Winter 2018 Collection

As the boundary between womenswear and menswear continues to merge, British label JW Anderson decided to provide a co-ed Fall/Winter 2018 show. The perceptive move, which follows many longstanding luxury houses, will free up future LFW schedule space for already harried fashion personalities and buyers.

This year’s presentation drew heavily on fall heritage colors, namely, khaki, beige, dark brown and army green. Clean cut knits are provided as well as sweaters donning contemporary art graphics. JW Anderson experiments with silhouettes providing creativity in the form of pockets and multi-panel construction on pants and rabbit motifs on sweaters. Despite hits of panache, the garments remain distinctly loyal to an everyday aesthetic, thus lending itself easily to retail racks.

Beyoncè Presents Colin Kaepernick with SI’s Muhammad Ali Award

NEW YORK (AP) — Beyonce presented Colin Kaepernick with Sports Illustrated’s Muhammad Ali Legacy Award on Tuesday night, and Kaepernick promised that “with or without the NFL’s platform, I will continue to work for the people.”

Beyonce was brought out as a surprise presenter by comedian Trevor Noah. She said she was “proud and humbled” to present the award.

“Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion,” Beyonce said. “Only hope to change the world for the better. To change perception, to change the way we treat each other. Especially people of color.”

Last year’s Ali Award winner, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, called Kaepernick a “worthy recipient” during a video tribute.

“He fully embraced the risk to his career in order to remind Americans of the systemic racism that was denying African-Americans their opportunities to equal education, jobs, health and even their lives,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem last season to protest racial inequality and police brutality. The demonstration sparked a wave of protests by NFL players during the anthem that repeatedly have been denounced by President Donald Trump.

Kaepernick parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers in March and hasn’t been signed by another team. He filed a grievance against the NFL in October alleging that he remains unsigned as a result of collusion by owners following his protests.

He spoke Tuesday about continuing Ali’s legacy for fighting social injustice, saying the boxing great “mentored me without ever meeting me.”

“The footprints he leaves are large,” Kaepernick said, “and his life is and has been a multi-textured tapestry that is rich in love, wisdom, life lessons and human kindness. I can only hope that I’m taking steps toward walking on the footsteps that he has left behind for the world to follow.”

Kaepernick skipped the red carpet prior to the show and was not available for questions. The awards show will be broadcast Friday night on NBC Sports Network.

Kaepernick also recently was honored by the ACLU of Southern California with the Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award and was named GQ magazine’s “Citizen of the Year” for his activism, which included pledging $ 1 million to “organizations working in oppressed communities.”

Kaepernick, who took a knee in protest of police brutality and sparked a national conversation back in August 2016, was given the award during Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year Awards in Brooklyn, New York, hosted by Trevor Noah. Named for the legendary boxer, the Ali Award celebrates individual athletes whose career impacts the world outside sports. ANB BRAND Presents Cool Collegiate Vibes in Fall/Winter 2017 Lookbook

Chinese streetwear label ANB BRAND‘s Fall/Winter 2017 range is inspired by the American collegiate style. The vibe takes cues from a fictional U.S. campus set in the ’90s and a student who the collection is based on — he studies at the school but lives in the city’s nearby Chinatown. There’s a rebellious air to his attitude which is perfectly translated in his wardrobe.

Included in the range are some typical school style staples such as sweatshirts, varsity jackets, and puffer outerwear pieces for those long winter months. Most of the pieces bear graphics and slogans as well as colorblocking and stripes. To complete the look, accessories such as backpacks, sling bags, and gym bags are added into the mix. I’m not getting my kids any Christmas presents this year: Here’s why

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

It’s barely September, but I’m bringing up the forbidden “C” word anyway: Christmas.

Ack! Before you throw things at me and curse my name for even thinking about December 25 this early, hear me out. (Also, please realize we have the Christmas tree up at our house by Halloween most years.) What I’m about to propose might take some budgeting and planning, anyhow, so it makes sense to bring it up now. Here it goes: This holiday season, I’ve already decided to skip buying presents for my three children.

Santa with children

Yes, you read that correctly. My three kids — ages 6, 3, and 1 — won’t be waking up on Christmas morning to a big ol’ pile of presents under the tree. Instead, we’re opting to ask Santa to go on a family trip. It’s nothing too extravagant: A couple of days at an indoor water park/hotel. But this getaway will be an opportunity for us to make memories together. (You know, beyond the 2 seconds it takes to tear wrapping paper.)

Truthfully, I’ve had a blast shopping for the perfect presents for each of my children; I think my anticipation for Christmas morning may have even beat theirs. In the spirit of giving, though, I may have gone a little overboard. (The look of excitement on their faces when they saw the heap of gifts was almost worth it.) After unwrapping everything, they played happily with their loot for the rest of the day. Wanna know what happened after that? They gave zero effs about the toys.

Presents under Christmas tree

Ultimately, a barrage of Christmas gifts only adds to the clutter of our home each year. Our Baby Alive sits naked in a toy box, forgotten. That Hot Wheels looping track is shoved under my son’s bed with pieces missing. These material things bring temporary joy, yes. Then they simply take up space. This year, I want to be smarter with our money and the “happiness” it can buy.

So at the end of December this year, we’ll don bathing suits so we can hit up some water slides, frolic in splash pads, wade in the pool, and just relax. We’ll spend our time together making memories instead of wrestling with plastic packaging, a million twist-ties, and batteries. (Okay, I might cave with the stockings. And who can resist Black Friday deals on kid clothing?)

This Christmas will be different. My hope is it it will be the start of a holiday tradition — and maybe even help shape a lifelong outlook on the value of material things versus experiences.

water slide

So no, my kids won’t be getting a pile of Christmas presents this year. But I hope they’ll take away so much more as a result. And for that, I’m not sorry in the least.

What do you think of our plan? How does your family approach gift-giving during the holidays?

Madeleine McCann’s Parents Still Have ‘Hope’ and Buy Daughter Birthday Presents 10 Years After Her Disappearance

Madeleine McCann‘s parents are speaking out in the wake of news that authorities are investigating a “significant line of inquiry” in the decade-old case.

Kate and Gerry McCann – whose 3-year-old daughter vanished from her family’s rented ground-floor apartment in Portugal on May 3, 2007 – tell British journalist Fiona Bruce in a new interview that they “still hope” Madeleine will be found, according to the U.K.’s Press Association.

“There is progress and there are some very credible lines of inquiry that the police are working on and whilst there’s no evidence to give us any negative news, you know, that hope is still there,” said Kate.

In a statement last week from London’s Metropolitan Police, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said a team of four detectives continues to work on “outstanding inquiries” in Madeleine’s disappearance, with aid from their Portuguese counterparts.

“We’ve got some critical lines of inquiry, those link to particular hypotheses, but I’m not going to discuss those because those are very much live investigation,” Rowley said.

The Metropolitan Police opted to reopen and fully fund a new probe into Madeleine’s disappearance in 2013.

Madeleine was one week from her fourth birthday when she went missing from the family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. The little girl had been left with her 2-year-old twin siblings in the unlocked rental while Kate and Gerry dined at a restaurant just 130 feet away.

“No parent is going to give up on their child, unless they know for certain their child is dead, and we just don’t have any evidence,” Gerry – who, along with Kate, was cleared as a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance – said.

Echoed Kate, “My hope for Madeleine being out there is no less than it was almost 10 years ago. I mean, apart from those first 48 hours, nothing has actually changed since then.”

Both have full faith in the Metropolitan Police’s work: “They’ve managed to pull so much together and sift through so much information, so now we do seem to be on just several lines of enquiry rather than tens/hundreds,” said Kate.

Gerry and Kate said that they’ve tried hard to make life somewhat normal for their twins, Sean and Amelie.

“I think before Madeleine was taken, we felt we had managed to achieve our little perfect nuclear family of five,” said Gerry, adding, “At some point you’ve got to realize that time is not frozen and I think both of us realize that we owed it to the twins to make sure that their life is as fulfilling as they deserve, and we have certainly tried our best to achieve that.”

Still, Madeleine is “always still part of our life,” said Gerry.

“I think every kind of event that we do, whether it be a birthday or a family occasion or even an achievement or something that is kind of when you really feel her absence,” said Kate, adding that she still buys birthday and Christmas presents for her daughter – including for Madeleine’s upcoming 14th.

“I think, that there is still hope really, there isn’t a new appeal, most of the media that we’ve done in the previous years is usually around that – so this is unusual,” said Gerry. “So, we are marking the anniversary. I think it’s been good for the general public to hear police say there’s no evidence that she’s dead, and that there is still an active investigation, and there is still hope. So certainly from my point of view, somebody knows what’s happened.”

Exchange Your Presents for Presence

There is always a moment around Thanksgiving — that time when the hype of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sets in — when we begin to dread the responsibilities and chaos of the holidays. To counter that feeling, I have reframed my thinking, shifting focus from presents to presence, to reclaim the spirit and peace of the season. That has made all the difference.

We teach this shift to the professionals in our leadership class. The December sessions focus on connecting with the humanity of others — others whose wants and needs may differ from your own. We work on the gifts of presence: listening, storytelling, and paying it forward.

As families gather this season, shifting focus to the gift of presence can enrich the conversation and bring back the spirit of joy. It begins and ends with listening. Instead of repeating the same old mundane travel stories or complaints about relatives who are not in the room, how about laser-focusing on one another in a loving and positive way? We use the following strategies in class to gift presence to one another, and they are easily adapted to the dinner table.

2014-12-17-Presencedadandchild.jpg

1. Shining the Spotlight: In class, members of a team take turns shining the spotlight on each other with undivided attention and specific positive feedback. Starting with one person, everyone around the table takes turn sharing what they admire about that person, what they have learned from them, or how they have been helped by them. Then the attention moves to the next person, and then the next. It’s a bit awkward at first, but quickly the conversation warms up as group members rivet on one another’s strengths. The givers and the receiver are enriched in this exchange, and the shared joy warms the room.

2. Storytelling: Storytelling animates the room and creates the ties that bind us. We do a variety of exercises in class designed to help people share their stories. At the dinner table, ask each person (this works for all ages) to share a story that made them smile or touched their hearts. This bonding experience opens our hearts and eyes to the goodness we experience around us. Everyone has a tale to contribute.

2014-12-17-Presencewomanandmother.jpg

3. Pay It Forward: Each year, we give our class members one actual present: a $ 20 bill. The only stipulation is that they must pay the $ 20 forward to someone, without expecting anything in return. This requires that people pay attention to the wants and needs of strangers around them, and step up to help them. I’ve made a tradition of giving my children Pay It Forward $ 20 bills as stocking stuffers, so that they continue this practice. They have helped street musicians, mailmen, and mothers in the grocery line with this unexpected generosity and presence.

4. Legacy: As the new year approaches, we often take time to reflect on what we’ve done in the past year and what we hope to do in the coming year. In class, we ask our students to take this a step further and consider their legacy 40 years from now. How do they want to be remembered by their family, colleagues, friends, and community? In the end, what will they have done that mattered? What will they do to make this world a better place? How will they contribute to the goodness that this world needs so desperately? By listening inwardly to discern what calls to them, they gain insight into what to start doing right now.

This can feel like the best of seasons — filled with love, joy, and possibilities — or the worst, filled with the frustration of buying presents, being bombarded with advertisements for things we do not need or cannot afford, and national news stories of tragedy and grief. What we do need and can afford is to demonstrate leadership in conversations with family and friends and take action to increase our presence and that of those around us. Exchange presents for presence to experience and spread the joy that we all hope for at this time of year.

‘Bob’s Burgers’ Presents New Thanksgiving Song, ‘Gravy Boat’

There aren’t enough Thanksgiving songs in the world, and that’s why we’re shining a spotlight on Gene, Linda and Gayle’s addition to that limited selection. On the Thanksgiving episode of “Bob’s Burgers,” the sisters took a moment before the turkey was cut to regale the assembled family and friends with “Gravy Boat” — with Gene providing the musical accompaniment.

What starts off as fairly cute and innocuous quickly takes a turn toward the weird — much like most episodes of “Bob’s Burgers.” Unfortunately, Bob fell asleep, interrupting the song. But here’s what we got:

A ding, a ding, a-what’s that sound?
It’s the gravy boat a-comin’ around
It’s not a Navy boat, it’s the gravy boat
Filled with bravery, savory, sailor folk

Sailors in your mouth
Sailors in your mouth

Now it’s stuck in your head and you’ll find yourself hoping they get to continue this masterpiece next Thanksgiving.

“Bob’s Burgers” airs Sundays at 8:30 p.m. EST on Fox.
