President Trump Said NFL Players Are ‘Unable to Define’ Why They Are Protesting. Here Are Some of the Many Times They Did

As the NFL preseason started Thursday night, players for the Eagles, Dolphins, Jaguars and Seahawks knelt, raised a fist or waited off-field during the national anthem. On Friday morning, President Donald Trump once again attacked them on Twitter.

Trump lashed out with a new criticism, saying that players, “wanted to show their ‘outrage’ at something that most of them are unable to define.”

To state that players are unable to explain the reasons behind their own protests is easily disproved. Many have articulated their rationales clearly and passionately since 2016, when quarterback Colin Kaepernick first kept his seat during the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

Regardless of whether you condemn NFL players bringing politics into the sport or agree with their stance on race relations in the United States, it is misleading to say that they have not properly expressed their reasons for protesting.

All the way back in 2016, Kaepernick said that his protest was directed against racism and police brutality, aligning himself with the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” He said in an interview with NFL.com. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

As Kaepernick’s protest spread, other players also made their reasons for protesting explicit. In September 2016, ESPN reporter Cameron Wolfe quoted Seahawks wide receiver Brandon Marshall. “I’m not against the military. I’m not against the police or America. I’m against social injustice.”

Jelani Jenkins, a linebacker for the Miami Dolphins, penned a piece in TIME Magazine that articulated his own rational for kneeling.

“What I want is simple: equal rights and equal opportunities for every single person living in this country,” he wrote. “By kneeling, I intended to stimulate meaningful dialogue and to raise awareness so that we will be able to find solutions to the problems that exist in this country.”

Following clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017, Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett said in an interview with NFL.com that he wanted “to use [his] platform to be able to continually speak on injustice.” He continued, “I just want to see people have the equality that they deserve.”

In September 2017, Trump, agitated by the kneeling players, or perhaps seeing an opportunity to win on a divisive issue with his base, condemned the NFL protests in harsh terms in a speech to supporters in Alabama.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’” said the president at a rally for Alabama Senator Luther Strange.

Following those comments, NFL players began protesting in greater numbers. Many cited the President’s comments as their reason for taking a knee during the national anthem, again clearly stating their rationalization.

“Me and my teammates, we felt like President Trump’s speech was an assault on our most cherished right, freedom of speech,” Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller told U.S. News & World Report. “Collectively, we felt like we had to do something for this game, if not any other game, if not in the past, in the future. At this moment in time, we felt like, as a team, we had to do something. We couldn’t just let things go.”

“It upset a lot of guys,” Indianapolis Colts free safety Darius Butler told the Indianapolis Star. “It kind of radicalizes you, in a sense: ‘OK this line is being drawn in the sand. I need to do something to show exactly what side I’m on.’”

One of the most extensive explanations was provided by San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid, who in September 2017 penned an op-ed in the New York Times. He explained that he had kneeled during the national anthem with Colin Kaepernick back in 2016 in order to protest police killings of black people, particularly that of Alton Sterling in his hometown Baton Rouge, La.

“We seek equality for all Americans, no matter their race or gender,” Reid wrote. “I refuse to be one of those people who watches injustices yet does nothing. I want to be a man my children and children’s children can be proud of, someone who faced adversity and tried to make a positive impact on the world.”

He wrote that he did not intend his protest to disrespect the flag or military personnel. “It should go without saying that I love my country and I’m proud to be an American. But, to quote James Baldwin, ‘exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.’”

With LeBron James Tweet, President Trump’s War on Sports Hits a New Low

The missive, sent from the White House at 10:37 p.m. Friday night, delivered nausea to decent people.

On the week LeBron James opened his school serving disadvantaged children from his hometown of Akron, Ohio, giving the kids and their families a singular opportunity — not to mention free college tuition to all who graduate — Donald Trump questioned the intelligence of a bonafide basketball genius. Sports smarts count. Off the court, James has started several businesses — a sports agency, a Hollywood production outfit — and become a meaningful philanthropist. Not to mention that he also possesses a photographic memory: James can recall minute details of basketball games on command.

What a strange target for Trump: one of the brightest, most popular athletes in the world. But facts don’t seem to bother this President. “Lebron (sic) James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon,” Trump tweeted on Friday night, referencing an interview Lemon, the CNN anchor, conducted with James to mark the opening of James’ I Promise School. “He made Lebron (sic) look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!” Here, Trump’s referring to another all-time NBA great, Michael Jordan.

There he goes again, Trump weaponizing sports to divide the country that he leads. To Trump, you either stand with him, or with Colin Kaepernick and any NFL “son of a bitch” — the President’s words — who kneels during the national anthem. Now, besides insulting yet another African-American athlete, Trump’s trying to co-opt the sports bar debate about the greatest basketball player of all-time. Jordan’s now his guy. You either stand with Trump and His Airness, or side with LeBron.

Opponents of the anthem protests complain that athletes are spoiling their sports diversion with politics. Stick to sports, so to say. But if that’s the case, shouldn’t politicians just concern themselves with politics? Mr. President, leave the GOAT talk alone.

James is a harsh critic of the President, which has apparently drawn Trump’s ire. In this interview with Lemon, James said that, “I believe our president is trying to divide us … what I’ve noticed over the last few months is that he’s kind of used sport to kind of divide us. That’s something I can’t relate to, because I know that sports was the first time I was around someone white. I got an opportunity to see them and learn about them, and they got an opportunity to learn about me, and we became very good friends. I was like ‘this is all because of sports.’ And sports has never been something that divided people. It’s always been something that brings someone together.”

In September, after Trump called the NFL players protests social injustice “sons of bitches” at a political rally, and rescinded a White House invitation to the NBA champion Golden State Warriors – even though the Warriors never planned to attend — James called Trump a “bum” on Twitter. If Trump was going to fire back at James, that would have been a more opportune time. But instead of praising an athletic icon for opening a school, Trump basically called James a dummy.

On Saturday morning, Lemon offered a pointed response to Trump. “Who’s the real dummy?” Lemon wrote on Twitter. “A man who puts kids in classrooms or one who puts kids in cages? .” James hasn’t responded to Trump’s tweet. He has every right to fire back, of course, but I kind of hope he doesn’t. I hope he saw Trump’s tweet, shook his head, laughed a little, and kept doing the good things he’s doing. Maybe he played hoops with his son; maybe he worked on his own game. Maybe he did some more planning on the I Promise School.

These all speak louder than a President’s Tweet.

Kim Kardashian Defends Trump: ‘I Have Nothing Bad to Say About the President’

ABC

Jimmy Kimmel had a lot to talk about with Kim Kardashian West ahead of this coming weekend’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians fifteenth season premiere. And it almost all had to do with Donald Trump.

The host began with Kardashian’s recent trip to the White House, during which she convinced the president to pardon Alice Marie Johnson, a 62-year-old woman serving a life sentence for a first time drug offense. “This seemed to be the happiest day of his presidency,” Kimmel said, showing the photo of Trump beaming next to a straight-faced Kardashian in the Oval Office.

“I mean, I walk in and I’m like, I look around and I’m kind of star-struck from the Oval Office and the first thing I say in our meeting, I say, ‘Holy shit we’re in the fucking Oval Office,’” she told Kimmel. “That’s what I said to him. That was the first thing I said. And I had to take a moment to be like wait, we’re really here.”

House of Cards Has a Fourth of July Message From the New President Underwood

This Fourth of July, the new President Underwood wants you to give thanks to… her.

Robin Wright returns as newly minted Commander-in-Chief Claire Underwood in the new promo for House of Cards‘ final season.

“Happy Independence Day… to me!” she says in the video, released on July 4. This was followed by “#MyTurn,” noting it’s finally Claire’s turn to take the White House after five seasons of Frank Underwood fighting for the throne.

The sixth and last season of the Netflix drama began production earlier this year ahead of an expected premiere this year. Season 5 finished with Frank stepping down as President of the United States with Claire stepping up in his place.

Kevin Spacey was supposed to return for the final season, but the sexual assault allegations against him from multiple men, including actor Anthony Rapp, prompted his firing. (Spacey apologized to Rapp, but stated he didn’t remember the alleged encounter. He denied other allegations and announced in November that he was seeking “evaluation and treatment.”)

Now season 6 will focus on Claire. Wright will be joined by Greg Kinnear, Diane Lane, Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott, Boris McGiver, and Cody Fern.

The American Medical Association Just Elected Its First African American Woman President

MD Patrice A. Harris made history this month when she became the first African American woman voted president-elect of the American Psychiatric Association (AMA). The psychiatrist from Atlanta, who was elected by the House of Delegates during the annual AMA meeting on June 12, will begin her presidency next summer.

via AMA Wire

Harris has previously held two executive AMA offices, board chair and board secretary, and has served on the health information technology, payment and delivery reform and private contracting committee task forces and chaired the AMA Council on Legislation and co-chaired the Women Physicians Congress. She will remain the chairperson of the AMA Opioid Task Force even after taking on the presidency. She is also currently maintaining her private practice and negotiating with both public and private organizations on health service delivery as well as contemporary trends in practice and health policy and is an adjunct professor in the Emory Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Outside of the AMA, Harris has served on the American Psychiatric Association Board of Trustees and as president of the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association and founding president of the Georgia Psychiatry Political Action Committee. In 2007, she was named the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association Psychiatrist of the Year.

In a statement, Harris praised the AMA for its policies associated with the fluctuating medical climate in the U.S. “It will be my honor to represent the nation’s physicians at the forefront of discussions when policymaker and lawmakers search for practical solutions to the challenges in our nation’s health system. I am committed to preserving the central role of the physician-patient relationship in our healing art,” she said. “The American Medical Association has well-crafted policy concerning the changing health care environment in this country and I look forward to using my voice to help improve health care for patients and their physicians.”

The AMA Women Physicians Section (WPS) represents more than 82,000 women physicians and medical students, advocates for women’s health and professional concerns, celebrates the achievements of women in medicine and works to increase the number and influence of women physicians in leadership roles.

Despite Harris’ historic appointment, the work of AMA’s WPS is as necessary as ever. In 1849, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to receive a U.S. medical degree from Geneva medical college in New York. Nearly 200 years later, there are more than 42,000 women enrolled in U.S. medical schools, and over the past 10 years, the number of female physicians, including residents, has grown by more than 43 percent—but fewer than 10 percent of women who self-identify as holding leadership positions in the field have reported being a department chair, CEO or CMO, and the proportion of women in higher academic ranks continues to be lower than their male counterparts.

“Did you see Jimmy Fallon?” Trump asked the crowd, who booed at the The Tonight Show host’s name. “Jimmy Fallon… The guy screws up my hair, going back and forth… He was so disappointed to find out it was real. He couldn’t believe it.”

Fallon’s feelings on ruffling Trump’s hair were not lost on Trump himself, who tweeted on Sunday that Jimmy Fallon was “now whimpering to all” about the “famous ‘hair show’” and called on the comedian to “be a man.”

Later that Monday night, Jimmy Fallon responded to Trump’s Twitter barb with a monologue, where he wondered if the President had better things to do than take a swing at him on social media.

After attacking Fallon at the South Carolina rally, which was meant to support Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, Trump continued his tour of other late night hosts that annoy him, doubling down on his thoughts on Stephen Colbert.

“The guy on CBS, what a lowlife. I mean, honestly, are these people funny? I can laugh at myself,” he said after bemoaning the lack of Johnny Carson-level talent on TV.

Trump also worked in a jab at Jimmy Kimmel, saying he said has “no talent.” He ruled out any future appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he has also appeared.

“Now I wouldn’t do his show. That guy’s terrible,” he said. But Fallon isn’t completely out of the President’s good graces, as Trump made a point of calling him “a nice guy,” though he did add that “he looks like a lost soul.”

President Trump Tells Tonight Show Host Jimmy Fallon to ‘Be a Man’ Over Hair-Mussing Episode

(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump is telling Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon to “be a man” and stop “whimpering” about the personal anguish he felt over the backlash he received after messing up Trump’s hair during a 2016 campaign appearance on Fallon’s late-night talk show.

Fallon recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he “made a mistake” on the Sept. 15, 2016, episode and would do it differently.

The comments didn’t appear to sit well with Trump.

The president tweeted Sunday: “.@jimmyfallon is now whimpering to all that he did the famous “hair show” with me (where he seriously messed up my hair), & that he would have now done it differently because it is said to have “humanized” me-he is taking heat. He called & said “monster ratings.” Be a man Jimmy!”

120 Larry Nassar Survivors Urge Michigan State University to Fire Interim President John Engler

(LANSING, Mich.) — A letter signed by 120 sexual abuse victims of former sports doctor Larry Nassar on Tuesday urged Michigan State University’s governing board to oust interim president John Engler, saying he had reinforced a “culture of abuse” at the school.

The women and girls issued their joint statement three days before the board of trustees’ next meeting and after a week in which demands for Engler’s resignation reached a fever pitch.

Engler, a former governor who took over on an interim basis in February after the previous president resigned amid fallout from the Nassar scandal, has resisted pressure to step down. Media outlets last week reported that he sent emails to another university official in April criticizing lawyers for Nassar’s sexual assault victims and suggesting the first woman to go public with her accusations was probably getting a “kickback” from her attorney.

Among those who signed the letter are Olympic gymnastics gold medalist Aly Raisman, and Rachael Denhollander, a former gymnast who has been one of the most vocal critics of Engler.

In their lengthy written statement, the 120 “sister survivors” said they stand together against “character attacks” and that Engler “has only reinforced the culture of abuse at MSU.” Current and future victims of sexual abuse “should know they can raise their voice without being characterized as pawns too foolish to know they are manipulated,” they said.

“There is no debate: President Engler has failed miserably,” they said in the letter. “Nothing at MSU — none of the mindsets that allowed Larry Nassar to abuse children for decades — have changed. Therefore, it is our position that MSU cannot move forward and become an institution of integrity and safety until John Engler is no longer president.”

Two of the university’s publicly-elected trustees, Democrats Brian Mossalam and Dianne Byrum, have called for the resignation of Engler, who served as the state’s Republican governor from 1991 through 2002. A portion of the statement is directed at the six other trustees, four Republicans and two Democrats, asking them to “stand for what is right.”

“Unfortunately, and with great regret, John Engler’s tenure as interim president has continued the bleeding rather than stem it,” Brian Mosallam said in a statement released Friday morning.

Trustees hired Engler after the former president, Lou Anna Simon, suddenly resigned in January in the wake of the Nassar scandal. Nassar himself was fired from Michigan State in 2016, two years after he was the subject of a sexual assault investigation.

Under Engler’s tenure, Michigan State has agreed to a $ 500 million settlement with 332 women and girls who said they were sexually assaulted by Nassar, a former campus sports doctor who also worked with the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. Nassar now is in prison. Of that, $ 75 million will cover future claims.

“We stood against our abuser. We stood against an abusive culture. Now we are asking you to stand against it too and lead MSU forward into real change,” the letter said in its conclusion.

NFL Players Association Responds as President Trump Criticizes Eagles Players for Snubbing White House

The union representing NFL players expressed disappointment in President Donald Trump’s decision to disinvite the Philadelphia Eagles from the traditional championship celebration at the White House on Tuesday – as Trump criticized the players in a series of tweets.

“NFL players love their country, support our troops, give back to their communities and strive to make America a better place,” the NFL Players Association said in a statement Tuesday morning.

Trump canceled the visit from the Super Bowl-winning team because some players “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem,” he said in a statement Monday evening.

Trump said the fans who planned on attending the ceremonial event “deserve better” than the small delegation of players. In place of the ceremony Tuesday, the White House will instead have the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus deliver a rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.”

The President took to Twitter Tuesday to reiterate his criticism of the players who refused to visit the White House. The Philadelphia Inquirer cited team sources as saying that fewer than 10 Eagles players had planned to attend the White House ceremony.

“Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!” he tweeted

In a statement that did not address the White House or the president, the Eagles said: “It has been incredibly thrilling to celebrate our first Super Bowl Championship. Watching the entire Eagles community come together has been an inspiration.”

Following their Super Bowl win earlier this year, several players — including safety Malcolm Jenkins, defensive end Chris Long and wide receiver Torrey Smith — said they would not attend the White House event if invited. As TIME has detailed, no players from the Eagles or their Super Bowl LII opponents, the New England Patriots, protested the national anthem when it played at the February match-up. During the season, the only sign of protest from the Eagles came when Smith and Long raised their fists in the air during the anthem.

Trump repeatedly attacked the NFL and players for protesting during the National Anthem last season. At a campaign-style event last fall, the President said NFL owners should fire any players who protest. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He’s fired. He’s fired!” Trump said at the time.

Last month, the NFL implemented a new policy that says teams will be fined if players do not “stand and show respect for the flag” during the National Anthem. Players would be allowed to stay in the locker room, during the anthem, however. The NFL Players Association has said it would challenge the new rule.

The anthem protests in the NFL began before Trump took office. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was the first athlete to kneel during the National Anthem several years ago to protest injustices faced by people of color in America. The sign of protest grew throughout the NFL — and into other professional leagues like the NBA and into amateur ones like high school sports leagues.

The Eagles aren’t the only professional team to be at odds with Trump. The President disinvited Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry from his championship-winning team’s White House visit last fall when he showed signs he was “hesitating.” (Curry had told reporters he did not want to go.) As a result, the entire NBA Championship-winning team chose not to go.

“We believe there is nothing more American than our citizens having the right to express themselves freely on matters important to them,” the Warriors said in a statement.

Santa Fe Victim’s Mom Challenged President Trump in Private Meeting for Labeling Shooter ‘Wacky’

The mother of a teenage girl killed earlier this month in a massacre at Santa Fe High School in Texas tells PEOPLE she challenged President Donald Trump‘s views on gun violence during his Thursday meeting with survivors of the mass shooting and families of the victims.

Trump, 71, repeatedly called the gunman “wacky” while speaking at the gathering, at a Houston military base, according to Rhonda Hart.

“He kept calling him this wacky kid who was wearing a wacky trench coat,” says Hart, whose 14-year-old daughter, Kimberly Vaughan, was fatally shot along with nine others in the May 18 attack in Galveston County.

At that point, Hart recalls, “I raised my hand and said, ‘I have something to say here. Let’s just get to the mental health part,”

She then explained that her daughter had anxiety, attention, Asperger’s syndrome and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and “took medicine daily.”

“I said, ‘ might have been depressed, but he wasn’t wacky.’ But if that kid needed help, he needed to have proper access to it,” Hart says, “meaning you shouldn’t repeal the Affordable Care Act and get them the help they need and take away the stigma of mental illness.”

She says she told Trump, “Mental illness needs to be addressed.”

“I said all that and he didn’t say anything,” she says. “He was just like, ‘Uhhhh …’ ”

Trump’s meeting with the Santa Fe community — which Hart says was attended by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz, among other leaders — was not open to the press, though Hart described some of what was discussed with PEOPLE.

A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Trump’s remarks or his interactions with Hart and other attendees.

“These events are very tragic whenever they happen. And you know, the president wants to extend his condolences and talk about the issue of school safety,” administration spokesman Raj Shah earlier said of the meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, according to the Associated Press.

“I think he just, you know, he talks to families, he listens and he wants to learn,” Shah said.

After the meeting, Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley reportedly described it as “very impactful” and “a very emotional time” but declined to discuss specifics, citing the privacy of the families.

• It was the scandal that rocked America’s most storied political family and changed the course of presidential history. Subscribe now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or wherever podcasts are available.

Hours after the Santa Fe mass shooting two weeks ago, Trump addressed the nation from the White House where he said, in part, “This has been going on too long in our country. Too many years. Too many decades now.”

He has created a school-safety commission, headed by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, but has not proposed new legislation, the AP reports.

Abbott, the Texas governor, this week released his own recommendations, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Hart, a 36-year-old bus driver, says she was “really shocked” at Trump’s preference for arming teachers as a solution to curb the regular mass shootings at schools across the country.

Hart says she is not in favor of arming teachers and told Trump and Abbott this, instead saying that she would prefer giving teachers pepper spray while training military veterans to act as guards on campus.

When another parent objected to the effectiveness of using pepper spray against a shooter, Hart says, she “looked Trump straight in the eye and I said, ‘Mr. Trump, have you ever been sprayed with pepper spray?’ He didn’t answer.”

“I don’t think he liked me very much,” Hart says.

She has previously spoken to PEOPLE about how her daughter’s death motivated her to work to stop future shootings.

“All I want to say is that the wrong child left this world,” she said. “They say the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I want to be an advocate.”

Keep killing off Obama’s foreign policy, Mr. President

Withdrawing from the Iran deal, as President Trump announced Tuesday, is a good first step toward reining in the Islamic Republic’s regional mischief. But there’s plenty more to do, as Lebanon proved this week. Decades ago, Lebanon was a gem at the heart of the Arab Mideast. Now it’s a wholly owned subsidiary of Iran…

Nothing But Respect for My President: Android Abe Lincoln

Philip K. Dick’s We Can Build You is a Cyrano de Bergerac story. The two lovers are schizophrenics, and the part of Cyrano is played by a robotic replica of Abraham Lincoln. It is the only novel ever written to feature the sentence, “I’m talking to Abraham Lincoln and finding out how to end our relationship forever.”

Written around the Civil War centennial in 1962, We Can Build You is not quite cyberpunk. Lincoln isn’t quite as cool as replicant Rachael in Blade Runner, and our narrator Louis Rosen is definitely no Harrison Ford. He’s an aging schmoe in a near-future world who works for a piano manufacturer that takes a detour into the replica business. Their idea: Civil War replicas! Beginning by recreating Lincoln’s grouchy but dutiful Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton, the company then shoot the moon by resurrecting Lincoln himself. But they can’t find a market for their Civil War roleplay, and Rosen falls in love with Pris Frauenzimmer, the schizophrenic and sociopathic teenage designer of the replicas, and one of the nastier entries in Dick’s long line of ice queens.

Somehow, Lincoln becomes Rosen’s legal counsel, personal guide, and life coach. The president’s famed wisdom and savvy are there, but Dick brings him into the novel only to then almost entirely ignore race, history, and politics. Who on earth is this Abraham Lincoln?

10 Things To Know About Former McDonald’s President and CEO Don Thompson

There’s a lot more to C-suite executive Don Thompson—the 2007 Black Enterprise Executive of the Year who gave B.E. an exclusive in-person interview after retiring from McDonald’s in 2015—than you might think.

10 Things You Need to Know About Former McDonald’s President and CEO Don Thompson

  1. He and his wife, Liz Thompson, recently created a $ 1 million endowment for Purdue University’s College of Engineering, according to a statement released by the college; $ 900,000 will go toward scholarships for underrepresented engineering students, and the rest will go to the Minority Engineering Program, or MEP.
  2. Thompson and his wife graduated from Purdue and both majored in electrical engineering.
  3. Thompson has been a Purdue trustee since 2009.
  4. Don and Liz met through MEP.
  5. Their gift to the college will help to ensure that MEP can continue to support students of color pursuing engineering at Purdue. Other colleges have adopted the MEP model, according to the statement.
  6. The Thompsons’ gift will support MEP programs like its Engineering Academic Boot Camp, designed to support the transition of underrepresented students to Purdue campus life.
  7. The Thompsons lead Cleveland Avenue, a privately held venture capital firm that invests in “innovative food, beverage, and restaurant concepts and emerging brands.”
  8. The Thompsons also head their own foundation, the Cleveland Avenue Foundation for Education. Don is CEO and Liz is president.
  9. Don worked for Northrop Grumman Corp. before going to McDonald’s, where he worked for 25 years, the last three as president and CEO.
  10. He has received a number of honors, including a Humanitarian Award from the Illinois Holocaust Museum in 2012.

“Purdue University, and specifically the Minority Engineering Program, opened doors of opportunity for Liz and me,” Don Thompson is quoted as saying in the statement. “Those doors, and God’s grace, ultimately led to successful careers that yielded economic opportunities to enable us to do what we’re doing today. Not only did we meet at Purdue through the program, but MEP helped shape our grit and perseverance—first through the summer engineering camps and then through the support it offered in response to academically challenging courses. At every step, they were there for us and now we want to pay it forward.”

President Trump Threatens Countries Who Don’t Support a U.S. Bid for the 2026 World Cup

(WASHINGTON) — U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to withhold support from nations who don’t back the joint bid by the United States, Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup.

Morocco also has bid to host soccer’s showcase. The FIFA Congress meets June 13 in Moscow to select the 2026 host, and a majority of the 207 voting FIFA members is needed. They also may pick neither bid, which would lead to the host process being reopened.

Trump tweeted Wednesday:

Trump met this week with France President Emmanuel Macron. French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet told L’Equipe this month the FFF will vote for Morocco.

President of Largest Black-Owned Bank: Boomers Can Learn Economic Optimism from Millennials

As graduation season approaches, most black parents have high anxiety about how our children can possibly achieve the American dream given economic inequality in America, while our children are confident their journey will be smooth and successful.

What if they’re right?

Research indicates a need for high anxiety. A recent study by Prosperity Now, The Road to Zero Wealth, quantifies the accelerating decline in black wealth over the past 30 years and projects if current trends continue, by 2053, black households will have a median wealth of $ 0! Furthermore, income inequality between blacks and whites is driven entirely by racism toward black boys, even when raised in wealthy black homes, according to a recent study by Stanford, Harvard, and the U.S. Census Bureau. While our children may be overly confident, we also have much to learn from them.

[RELATED STORY: STUDY: EVEN WHEN BORN INTO WEALTH, MANY BLACK BOYS DESTINED TO BECOME POOR]

Are we underestimating Millennials?

As president and owner of OneUnited Bank, the largest black-owned bank in America, I have the opportunity to speak about financial literacy with many black communities across the country. Their feedback indicates a generational divide between baby boomers and millennials that begs the question, is past prologue? Are we underestimating our children?

For instance, for many years OneUnited Bank presented itself as a community bank that happens to be black-owned. About five years ago, we recognized the importance of speaking in our authentic voice to better serve urban communities and became unapologetically black. When young blacks hear this, they immediately snap their fingers as if to say “Amen.” Baby boomers, believing their “ice is colder,” often perceive black-owned institutions as offering less service at higher prices than a white company even when untrue.

I was blindsided once when after the typical recitation of my personal story, including Brown University, Harvard Business School, and working in the top ranks of Bank of America and American Express, someone asked, “But who are you?”

A black artist commissioned to paint an authentic mural of the black experience on OneUnited Bank’s Miami office pushed me to reflect. I finally recognized that more meaningful than my résumé, I am the great-grandchild of Annie Coachman, aka Ma Honey, who owned a barbecue pit, juke joint, candy store and real estate in Indiantown, Florida, a small town where blacks lived on one side of the railroad tracks, whites on the other. I lost touch with the enduring role Ma Honey played in my life, partially because she passed away my freshman year, but more because of the condescending reaction I experienced at Brown to my Indiantown roots.

My personal story touches a nerve with baby boomers who experienced the journey from segregation to integration. Some of them even shed a tear for the undervalued “Ma Honey” in their lives. Millennials and Generation Z, whose formative years were punctuated by the presence of a black president, make it clear they have no doubt about the value of their culture and roots, and have no tolerance for inauthenticity. For them, black is “lit.”

The generational differences are real.

While baby boomers express ambivalence about being perceived as “too black” and may even prefer the term “urban,” millennials created the #BankBlack and #BuyBlack movements, driving millions of dollars to black-owned banks and businesses. Since OneUnited Bank has embraced its “unapologetically black” voice, including our advocacy for social justice and #BlackLivesMatter, our customer base has doubled.

The black community is more focused on its $ 1.2 trillion in annual spending and the inaugural We Buy Black Convention is taking place in Atlanta in November.

With 43% of the 75 million millennials identifying as African American, Hispanic, or Asian, if a brand doesn’t have a multicultural strategy, it doesn’t have a growth strategy, according to Nielsen. Black consumer choices have a “cool factor” that moves markets. Hip-hop and authentic black performances— such as “Black Panther,” Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé—have shaped global culture and generated billions. And black consumers are more likely to interact with brands on social media, use social networks to support companies and brands, or conversely, “call out” companies perceived to disrespect the black community.

There is no question economic mobility remains challenging for the black community, and we need to double down on our fight for social and economic justice. And as parents, we are rightfully concerned about our children’s future. Yet, we must also acknowledge black youth and young adults are a powerful voice and a growing economic force who can succeed against the odds because, in their minds, Wakanda is real.

Why ‘The President Show’ Star Can’t Go Out in Public as Trump Anymore

Comedy Central

Anthony Atamanuik’s Donald Trump went out in a blaze of surprisingly poignant glory at the end of his Christmas special last December. Performing an Aimee Mann cover from his Oval Office set, he warned the American people, “It’s not going to stop, until you wise up.”

That might have been it for the best Trump impersonator in comedy—Alec Baldwin included—after Comedy Central quietly declined to pick up The President Show for a second season. But given an unexpected ratings bump for the Christmas show, the network has decided to double-down on the hour-long special format, beginning with this week’s Make America Great-A-Thon: A President Show Special, airing Tuesday night at 11 p.m. while The Daily Show is on hiatus.

“I’m actually really happy about the specials,” Atamanuik tells me by phone from New York a few days before the telethon-themed hour is set to air. He’s just left the floor of the New York Stock Exchange where he was taping a TV interview and no, he says, they did not let him ring the bell. “I actually said to the guy who showed me the bell, ‘What happens if I ring it? Do they all stop?’ And he said, ‘Do not even joke about that.’”

FACE Africa Honoring Toronto Raptors President, Hosts UN Deputy Secretary-General

On March 31, FACE Africa, an organization helping to improve water quality and availability to more than 100,000 people in Liberia, will host the who’s who in philanthropy, government, business and entertainment in New York City, bringing awareness to the clean-water crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. The nonprofit has managed to forge a bond between the U.S. and Africa in creating impact across borders.

“Clean water is a catalyst for change,” Saran Kaba Jones, FACE Africa founder and CEO, said in a news release. “It is the first and most important step to lifting communities out of a cycle of illness and poverty, and also a powerful way to empower women and girls who are disproportionately burdened by the scarcity of safe water.”

Adding to the night, the org will honor Masai Ujiri, president of the Toronto Raptors, and host chairwoman and U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed. Ujiri previously served as general manager for the Denver Nuggets and was the NBA’s Executive of the Year in 2013.

Mohammed, who was Minister of Environment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from November 2015 to December 2016, was also an adjunct professor at Columbia University and served on several international advisory boards and panels including the Global Development Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the African Women’s Millennium Initiative.

The FACE Africa WASH Gala has drawn African American as well as African diaspora professionals from industries including healthcare, activism, media, and business. The event boasts donors and supporters like NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo, Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee, chef Marcus Samuelsson, Urban League President Marc Morial, and billionaire philanthropist Tony Elumelu.

According to the organization, nearly 850 million people around the world lack access to safe water supply sources, and in Africa specifically, 300 million people are affected daily. This year FACE Africa is partnering with The Last Well, a nonprofit with a shared mission to positively impact nearly 400,000 Liberians with access to clean water by the end of 2020. FACE Africa has also expanded its reach this year, launching its first clean water program in Osun State, Nigeria, in partnership with the Omoba Gbolahan Ayoola Foundation.

Sponsors of this year’s event include Sundial Brands, which just made major moves in supporting African and African American women through its latest acquisition deal to purchase Essence and expand under the Unilever umbrella, the September 20 Foundation, RLJ Kendeja Resort and Villas, FTI Consulting, and Ndini, a multimedia content platform.

Nike President Trevor Edwards Resigns Amid Workplace Misconduct Investigation

Trevor Edwards, an executive once heralded as Mark Parker’s successor as Nike’s next chief executive, will vacate his position as soon as August, the company announced last Thursday.

Nike announced the news on the heels of a report from The Wall Street Journal, detailing improper conduct and demeaning treatment of female employees at the company. Although there have been no direct allegations against Edwards, WSJ reported that Edwards, along with Jayme Martin, vice president and general manager of global categories, protected male employees who mistreated women at the company. Their subordinates also bullied Nike co-workers in other departments, including people from other countries, it was reported,

“There had been conduct inconsistent with Nike’s principles and we are taking the appropriate actions,” Nike spokesperson, Greg Rossiter told the The Wall Street Journal.

In a companywide memo sent alerting employees of the departures last week, and first published in part by Fast Company, Parker said the company will be conducting a comprehensive review of his company’s human resource systems and practices along with “elevating our complaint process for matter[s] of respect issues.”

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve become aware of reports of behavior occurring within our organization that do not reflect our core values of inclusivity, respect, and empowerment at a time when we are accelerating our transition to the next stage of growth and advancing our culture. This disturbs and saddens me,” Parker wrote in the memo.

Edwards, 55, who has been at the Oregon-based firm since 1992, managed the world’s largest shoe and apparel company’s sales unit around the world including its wholesale, retail, and e-commerce businesses. His resignation comes in a period that has seen two other high profile African Americans resign from positions of power following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Tavis Smiley, an influential talk show host, who has filed a lawsuit against his former employer, was suspended and his show pulled from the air in December after PBS’ internal investigation found that he had “multiple sexual encounters with subordinates over many years.” Hip-hop pioneer and business executive Russell Simmons, also resigned from all his companies after nine women accused him of sexual assault, including rape.

The shake-up not only thins the field of prospective CEO candidates, it also delays Parker plans of retiring by 2020. He has been Nike’s CEO since 2006.

According to Bloomberg, Edwards has about $ 9 million of unvested stock awards and will receive a $ 525,000 payout.

President Trump halts Broadcom takeover of Qualcomm

(Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday blocked microchip maker Broadcom Ltd’s proposed takeover of Qualcomm Inc on national security grounds, ending what would have been the technology industry’s biggest deal ever amid concerns that it would give China the upper hand in mobile communications.

President Donald Trump Just Killed Broadcom’s Proposed Takeover of Qualcomm

President Donald Trump will not let Broadcom proceed with a blockbuster hostile takeover of Qualcomm.

Trump issued an executive order on Monday that prohibits Broadcom from acquiring Qualcomm for roughly $ 117 billion, citing national security concerns.

“The proposed takeover of Qualcomm

by the Purchaser is prohibited, and any substantially equivalent merger, acquisition, or takeover, whether effected directly or indirectly, is also prohibited,” the executive order, signed by Trump, said.

The order also said that Broadcom’s

15 proposed candidates to Qualcomm’s board of directors have been “disqualified,” Qualcomm has previously rejected Broadcom’s proposed director nominees to its board.

Trump cited in the order that there is “credible evidence” that causes him to believe that Broadcom–if able to purchase Qualcomm–“might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States,” although he didn’t elaborate on the evidence. Broadcom is in the process of reincorporating in San Jose, Calif. It is currently based in Singapore.

Last week, the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment said it was considering investigating the proposed Broadcom deal citing national security concerns, which ended up delaying a March Qualcomm shareholder meeting. As a response, Broadcom publicly accused Qualcomm of “secretly” asking the committee to investigate the deal, which Qualcomm then denied.

The White House statement directs Broadcom and Qualcomm to “immediately and permanently abandon the proposed takeover,” and verify in writing to the foreign investment committee that they have indeed terminated the deal and any such variation.

A possible combination of Broadcom and Qualcomm would have created a massive wireless and mobile semiconductor giant with a market cap of over $ 200 billion. Such a huge semiconductor company was enough to worry Intel

, which the Wall Street Journal reported last week was considering buying Broadcom if the deal actually went through.

President Trump’s executive order puts an end to Broadcom’s unsolicited pursuit of Qualcomm. Qualcomm had repeatedly rejected Broadcom’s bids, citing national security concerns and a belief that the deal undervalues the company.

Daniel Ives of GBH Insights said in a research note that while Broadcom could potentially challenge the order, it’s not likely to make a difference. He wrote that “the Trump edict essentially kills any chances of this deal happening and is a major gut punch to those Qualcomm bulls hoping this soap opera could end with a bid following pressure from the shareholder meeting, which is poised to happen next month after getting delayed.”

“While Qualcomm still remains an M&A candidate for another chip player, this deal dissolving is a clear positive for Intel which is in a further position of strength with the potential marriage of Broadcom and Qualcomm now broken up by the Beltway before it even got to the altar,” Ives wrote.

Fortune contacted Broadcom and Qualcomm for comment and will update this story if they respond.

Qualcomm shares were down 4.5% in after-hours trading to $ 59.98, while Broadcom shares were relatively flat at $ 265.
