About Facebook’s new privacy hub + how to download a copy of your profile

Facebook announced this week that it will debut a central hub for users to better control access to their security settings and privacy. The move comes amid heightening scrutiny of the social networking site over how it has handled people’s data.

“Instead of having settings spread across nearly 20 different screens, they’re now accessible from a single place,” Facebook said in a  news release Wednesday. “We’ve also cleaned up outdated settings so it’s clear what information can and can’t be shared with apps.”

Facebook introduces centralized privacy & security hub

Users can expect the changes, which will include a new Privacy Shortcuts menu, to appear in the coming weeks.  Facebook promises the experience will be “clearer, more visual, and easy-to-find,” according to the release, which was penned by Erin Egan, Facebook’s chief privacy officer and Ashlie Beringer, the network’s deputy general counsel.

“Some people want to delete things they’ve shared in the past, while others are just curious about the information Facebook has,” they said. “So we’re introducing Access Your Information – a secure way for people to access and manage their information, such as posts, reactions, comments, and things you’ve searched for. You can go here to delete anything from your timeline or profile that you no longer want on Facebook.”

With the increased interest in Facebook and privacy, we’ve shown you how to see what third-party apps are using your data, also how to deactivate your account, but there’s one more thing you may be wondering about: Just what kind of information is the social media site keeping on you?

The way to see this is to download a copy of your Facebook archive.  Here are the steps to do it:

  • Click account settings at the top right of any Facebook page and go to Settings.

  • In the center of the page, under “General Account Settings,” click the link that says, “Download a copy of your Facebook data.” This is what you should see:

  • See that green button? Click “Start My Archive.” It will prompt you to re-enter your password.

You may then see a dialog box that says, “It may take a little while for us to gather your photos, wall posts, messages and other information.” This time the button’s blue, but it still says “Start My Archive.” Click it.

  • Another dialog box will pop up, this time telling you, “We are gathering your information and will send an e-mail to [your contact email address].” (Note: I never received an email. Instead, I got a ready notification in Messenger.)

  • Once you receive notification, click the green button that says “Download Archive.”  You will be prompted to enter your password again.

  • A zip file will immediately download to your computer. You can browse the contents of each folder by clicking on them and opening the included files.

In my case, five files were included in my zip file. Some users may see more. By going through the files, you can see exactly what information Facebook has gathered on you!

How to Get the Most Out of Your LinkedIn Profile

If you type in the phrase “is LinkedIn still relevant” on Google, the autocomplete suggestions include “is LinkedIn still relevant 2015,” “is LinkedIn still relevant 2016,” and so on — and since the answer for 2018 is still yes, it’s worth knowing how to get the most out of your LinkedIn profile. The recommendations in our 2016 post on the best LinkedIn settings for job hunting are still relevant, and you can also take a look at LinkedIn’s video guide on adjusting account and privacy settings.

Here are tips for how to get the most out of your LinkedIn profile in 2018:

1. Don’t wait until you change jobs to change your profile. Keep it updated with your professional accomplishments — papers, projects, presentations, and more.

2. Write your headline carefully, and be specific about who you are and what you do. Here’s a helpful 4-part headline formula from career expert Laura Smith-Proulx.

3. Improve your profile URL. If you haven’t already, customize it with your name to get rid of that random string of numbers.

4. Don’t have a profile picture that’s clearly a selfie. A photo taken with your computer’s camera is better, but not ideal — if you don’t ask someone to take a headshot for you, you can always prop up your phone somewhere and use the timer function of the camera. This story from The Balance has a lot of specific tips on what your photo should look like.

5. Get rid of that boring, generic profile summary. Make it clear what you can offer employers — include your accomplishments, goals, interests, and skills using your industry’s relevant keywords. Don’t make it too formal — this isn’t your resume.

6. Try to avoid the most overused words. LinkedIn’s “Top 10 Global Buzzwords” for 2018 (just announced a couple of weeks ago) are “specialize,” “experienced,” “skilled,” “leadership,” “passionate,” “expert,” “motivated,” “creative,” “strategic,” and “focused.” (Ladders News also wisely warns against “ninja,” rockstar,” “pivot,” “guru,” “wizard,” and “god.”) Although the advice is specifically aimed at people working in sales, this blog post from HubSpot offers some better ways to describe what you have to offer.

The reality is doing even some of these steps will put you ahead of the majority of your competitors. Do all of them and you will blow your fellow job seekers out of the water and amaze prospective employers.

1. Get your name in lights

Enter your name as you want to be called. You can use the former name function if you changed your name over the course of your career and want to be found under your former name and you can choose to whom your former name is visible for optimum reach.

2. Make the most of your tagline

Optimizing your tagline with keywords and phrases is very important to your LinkedIn profile. In your tagline, also known as your headline, use the keywords, descriptors and deliverables for which you want to be found for by hiring managers and recruiters. Do not let it default to your current job title. Instead, use this 120-character area to give the reader a snapshot of who you are and your personality, motivating them to click on your profile link to read further. Hiring managers actually use these keywords to find people like you! You can get direction for the keywords to use from target job descriptions.

Here is an example of a before and after tagline:

3. Have a professional-looking profile headshot

Whether you hire a professional photographer or have a do-it-yourself profile photo, having the right image attached to your LinkedIn profile is critical. Use a photo that is professional and appropriate for the type of industry you are in and the type of job for which you are applying. Recruiters and hiring managers want to feel a personal connection with you as a candidate.

Job seekers need to be aware that not having a picture or (worse) having a poor picture choice front and center for those viewing their profile is a serious detriment to their job search efforts. Including a photo on your LinkedIn profile increases your profile being viewed by 40%.

Invest in a professional picture or choose a photo of your own where you are professionally attired. Choose a cropped headshot that is free from blurs, other people and background distractions.

4. Use a background photo for additional personal branding

You have the option to include a background photo to complement your profile photo for further branding. You can choose an image (ensure you have the rights to use the photo) or use a meme creator to create an image of a quote that embodies what you stand for. This is a great place to demonstrate your personal brand to promote the image you want to put forth. The size of this photo is 1400 x 425 pixels and should be a .jpg, .gif or .png file.

5. Claim a vanity URL

It’s a lot easier to point people to your LinkedIn profile when you have a direct link with your name in it. LinkedIn allows you to customize your profile URL easily, and you should absolutely change it if you haven’t already.

Otherwise, you will be stuck with a generic LinkedIn link that will be difficult to include on your resume materials and/or business cards. These LinkedIn Help instructions can show you how to customize your public profile URL (otherwise known as a vanity URL).

6. Your contact information is neatly included in a contact information folder

Under the vanity URL and top third of your profile, your profile gives you the option to include a Twitter handle, three websites, company web address, phone number, email address and more — neatly placed in an address file at the lower right hand corner of your intro box, alongside your LinkedIn URL. This makes it easy for you to find info to contact people on your target list and simpler for hiring managers to contact you.

7. Adjust your public profile settings

LinkedIn automatically sets profiles to be seen by the public. You can customize which sections are visible, and which are not, to the public when your profile is listed in a search engine result. Review which sections you want included as it pertains to your profession and industry. Typically, you will want all of the sections visible, however, you may decide to choose a different strategy when deciding what is shown or not shown. Allowing public visibility in some capacity allows your profile to show up in search results when your name is searched through a search engine. And when your profile is clicked on through that search engine result, what you deem visible in your public profile will be seen by the viewer.

8. Create achievement-driven summary and experience sections

The summary section provides you a 2,000-character space to showcase your achievements and key accomplishments. It should be filled with examples of how you have achieved various things. Additionally, you can reference other parts of your profile here, to encourage readers to keep scrolling to the other sections of your profile where your work is more prominently displayed.

Here is where you can start to build your brand. Your brand is not only what you want to project of yourself, but what your employers, coworkers, vendors and clients have come to know you for during your career. Remove the fluff and clichés from your summary and instead make it jam-packed with action-driven information and language, letting your personality shine through for that prospective employer. Don’t just tell someone you are results-driven, demonstrate this fact by citing results in your profile.

Logistically, ensure the best first impression is made in the first 363 characters of your profile, as those are the initial characters shown. A reader will have to click on the profile to read the remaining 1,637 characters on a desktop. Concise, powerful writing is key for these space limitations. Write your summary and review how it looks when viewing your profile. Does the 363 characters motivate the reader to click and read more? Using this gut-check evaluation, you can determine what to lead with to make a best first LinkedIn profile impression.

Here is a guide to developing achievement-driven statements for your summary and experience sections. For each task or claim you are making:

A) Ask yourself, “How did I make money, save money, streamline a process, improve the outcome or contribute to culture?”

B) Another way to ask this question is, “How do I know I did a good job?” And then describe what that good job looked like.

These two questions will steer you away from job responsibility tasks in your profile and put you on the road to developing accomplishment-driven language in your profile.

9. Use keywords in summary and experience sections

Keywords are important throughout your profile, not just in your tagline. In your summary and experience sections, you’ll want to use words that will enable hiring managers to “find you” in a keyword search. Quick tip: Cut and paste a job description into a word cloud application like Wordle.net, to identify keywords and acronyms that you need to have in your profile. Then incorporate these keywords into the content of your summary and experience sections to improve the optimization of your profile. Additionally, use these keywords to develop the skills section mentioned in a later section.

Use descriptor words that demonstrate your abilities, subject matter expertise and skill sets as often as possible, especially in your summary and experience sections.

10. Showcase your work

There are several sections in your profile that allow you to showcase your work and professional credentials and demonstrate your personality. All of these sections add dimension to your overall brand.

For example, use the project section to spotlight work that is pertinent to your profession. Be sure you have permission to use this material publicly on your profile. This is a great option for copywriters, graphic artists, conference speakers and corporate trainers, for example. What you decide to include here helps you set yourself apart from other candidates.

Include relevant information in each of these sections such as publications, projects, courses, volunteer experience and so on. Upload applicable media, presentations and videos. Ensure that what you include reinforces your personal brand.

11. Complete all sections, including education, certifications and interests

The more complete your profile, the improved positioning of your profile in search results when your network looks for people like you. Be sure to complete all of the sections including education, certifications, interests and the other section options your profile provides, when applicable.

Insert the applicable information — being conscious about the overall impact it will have on your personal brand. Include details that help enhance your brand and make your profile stronger.

Additionally, do you know multiple languages? Have your received honors and awards? Do you have patents to promote to the scientific or consumer goods community? These are details that could certainly help you rise above the competition when included and showcased.

12. Embed interesting media elements to keep the reader engaged

If you want to make your profile extra engaging and interesting to keep the reader scrolling down your profile, add media, such as documents, video, images and audio. Your profile is revved up into an online portfolio, in essence. Reference these included works in your summary, so the reader is motivated to keep scrolling to find the specific mentioned work. You can easily embed these links into your summary, work experience, education, project and other sections.

As with everything else, you will want to make sure the media chosen supports your brand and reinforces your image in a positive manner.

13. Choose the right skills

The skills section allows you to create an instant association to different skill sets that you want to be known for. Be careful in choosing the right skills, you can choose up to 50, for the job you are seeking and your personal brand.

The options seem limitless — but here is the place to remember your specialization and focus only on the skills that make the most sense for your overall profile and the types of roles you are seeking. You can reference the job descriptions you are applying to for guides on keywords and phrases to include.

14. Get recommendations

Having colleagues, managers, clients, vendors, mentors and others provide a recommendation about your work and capabilities is the best kind of social boost you can get on LinkedIn. Reach out to your connections and ask them to provide a recommendation. The more qualitative the recommendation, the better.

Be sure to approve and include the recommendations on your profile. You do not have to feel obligated to return the favor, unless you have value to add discussing your experience working with that person. Offering qualitative recommendations and receiving them is the key, and they do not need to be reciprocal.

15. Don’t forget the endorsements

Endorsements get a bad rap sometimes, just because they are easy to give and you may be endorsed for skills you do not want to showcase or may not even have. Have no fear. You have complete control over what skills get endorsed and the order in which they are showcased. When you choose the right skills, your connections will be able to provide endorsements for those. Choose to keep the most relevant and pertinent endorsements. It is OK to delete endorsements for topics not pertaining to what you want to be found or recruited for.

LinkedIn endorsements are important, regardless of your opinion of them being too easy to obtain or possibly diluting your recommendations. You can choose to be endorsed and be notified when you are endorsed, so you can say “Thank You” to your endorser. This is a great way to network, as well, and an opportunity to open up a dialogue.

16. Rearrange sections to showcase your best self

Did you know that you can rearrange the sections of your profile to customize what you deem most important and showcase first what puts you in the best light? To do this, look for the icon in the upper right hand corner of each section called “move LinkedIn sections.” Then arrange your sections based on what you think is most important to your target audience. For job seekers, this is potential employers.

17. Decide to include personal details or not

It may (or may not!) be obvious for you to include personal details. For U.S. job seekers, it is not necessary to include the personal details. For those seeking positions outside the U.S., including  a birth date and marital status are more customary. Evaluate your goals and determine if you might choose not to include these pieces of information on your profile.

18. Align your profile data to your resume information

In most job application scenarios, hiring managers will find your LinkedIn profile after they have reviewed your resume. It’s important that your resume and LinkedIn profile are aligned with accurate information across both mediums.

Everything needs to align — it doesn’t have to be word-for-word, but the dates, titles, information, skills and so on need to match up. Not having these two documents in alignment can thwart the job search process and put into question a candidate’s trustworthiness.

19. Your LinkedIn profile should be mobile friendly

40% of LinkedIn users use the LinkedIn Mobile apps (LinkedIn Mobile, LinkedIn Groups, LinkedIn Connections, etc). While the info that can be found on LinkedIn when viewed on a computer is the same info that can be found on a mobile device, the layout and functionality are different, so there are a few things to pay extra attention to. For example, pay attention to the first 73 characters of your tagline and the first 42 characters in your LinkedIn profile summary, as evidenced by the screenshot below. 20. Activity and engagement are important

There is huge value being placed on engagement. Activity level is prominently showcased on your LinkedIn profile and is weighted by LinkedIn. Participating in groups, posting status updates, commenting on posts and liking content shared by connections and group members are many ways to engage with users and sharing information with your connections. Now, when someone looks at your profile, they can see how active (or not so active) you have been on LinkedIn and how often you have posted/shared relevant information. Staying current on your profile and your engagement is as important as ever!

Update your status on a regular basis, so your network can see what you are doing and you can stay top of your network’s mind. Status updates can be as simple as a link to an article you found interesting, information about an event you are attending or a presentation you are giving. Engagement can also be you posing a question to your network or you helping a member with an answer to their question. If you reach out to engage your network, that is the way to start getting returned engagement.

Remember, having a robust LinkedIn profile is only one piece of the “getting more views on your profile” puzzle. Engaging members is the key second step, once your profile is completed, to bring views to your profile. Regularly be active in your groups and with your connections and you will see your profile views increase.

21. Update your connections

On a monthly basis, update your contacts that you include in your list of LinkedIn connections. LinkedIn gives you a powerful tool to expand your network. Go to My Network, click on Connections and click on the star wheel to the right to access the ability to add your Gmail contacts or import contact files to invite to your network.

Additionally, under My Network, you can choose “Add Contacts” and LinkedIn gives you the opportunity to add individuals one-by-one or choose your email provider to sync your contacts with your profile connections.

22. Complete your profile 100%

When your profile is completed, it will show in LinkedIn search results of your networks. As a job seeker, this is paramount for being found by recruiters. Follow the prompts in completing your profile. If you are currently not working, enter in a present position indicating the type of job you are looking for and outline professional initiatives you are doing while looking for your next role. Having this “to present” position listed will contribute to your profile being 100% complete.

23. Join up to 100 LinkedIn groups

When you join up to 100 groups, you are now in the connection webs of the group members of these 100 groups — and not just the connection webs of your three degrees of connections. This enables your profile to show up in exponentially more search results when someone is looking for someone like you.

24. Like and comment on other people’s status updates 

The engagement will increase your profile views and lead to offline conversations taking place. Using LinkedIn as an online networking tool that leads to offline connections being made is the goal.

25. Share articles that will help others

Post information that is pertinent to your industry and profession so you look like a professional resource to your peers.

This is how Instagram’s potential update could ruin your entire profile

Having a good aesthetic is the cardinal rule of Instagram, with online influencers – from food and fitness bloggers to brands and businesses – swearing by a flawless theme to get likes and followers.

This, according to every Instagram guide, is down to careful curation of our 3×3 photo grids, selecting an order that colour coordinates by row and matches each post in theme to those around it.

It has been that way since the beginning of time – or at least since the beginning of Instagram in 2010 – and we dread to think how many years of our lives we have clocked up perfecting our three-a-row feeds since then.

It is hardly surprising therefore that there was a global uproar – no that’s not too strong – when it was rumoured that Instagram might be shaking up their format, moving from the three-across format to a 4×4 grid.

While the change may not seem too drastic to an unseasoned Instagram user, the shift will throw off the aesthetic of carefully curated feeds everywhere, thus rendering our hard work and time spent collating the perfect feed completely pointless.

While there has been no formal announcement of an imminent change, several users noticed the update to their profiles last month, with a 4×4 grid appearing on their profile rather than the original format.

This, users are speculating, is the app trialling the update, before potentially putting it into action for us all in the near future.

Understandably, the app’s users aren’t too happy with angry Instagrammers ironically taking to Twitter to voice their annoyance.

‘Hey Instagram, people have spent years perfecting their feeds. No 4 grid update please’, posted one user, while another tweeted ‘Is everyone else’s Instagram doing this?! My whole grid looks off now! Yo Instagram can we discuss this?’

‘My Instagram now shows my feed as a 4×4 grid,’ posted another confused user. ‘I can feel the internet getting ready to explode.’

We couldn’t agree more and from the extent of the outcry, we wouldn’t be surprised if a petition emerged soon.

Is Your LinkedIn Profile Helping or Hurting You?

A few years back, I was in a Women In Technology (WIT) Executive Coaching program. One of my biggest leadership takeaways from the program was the importance of a well-crafted social network. My executive coach shared a true story of two equally qualified candidates competing for a sales job. The candidate with the stronger LinkedIn profile got the job.

While a solid résumé is still needed to land a professional position, job seekers should not underestimate the importance of a solid LinkedIn profile—doing so could be detrimental to a great career. Last year, I had the honor of being on the planning team for an invitation-only corporate career day. A LinkedIn profile was one of the main criteria for attendees. That may sound a little absurd to some, but keep in mind that all companies have a vetting process for managing the influx of job applicants.  

Having a superstar LinkedIn profile is important because studies show that 87% of recruiters use the tool, over 106 million users are on the site per month, and for sure, decision makers are sizing up candidates based on information found on LinkedIn. So, if you have a LinkedIn profile, good. But that’s just the start. The tips below will help you to stand out among other candidates and could make the difference between you landing a great job or losing the opportunity.   

Here are five tips that will make LinkedIn your advocate: 

Photography

 

Profiles with photographs get 21 times more views than profiles without a photograph according to LinkedIn’s data. Make sure your photo is professional, has good lighting, and does not include other images; i.e., your spouse, pets, or children.  

Headline

 

The description under your photo should highlight what you do or the services and skills you provide. Do not make the mistake of putting ‘between jobs or currently seeking new opportunities’ in the headline. Being unemployed does not give you an edge for gaining new employment; presenting yourself well does.   

Summary Section 

 

Think of the summary section as an executive summary where you highlight your unique value and not the attributes of the companies where you gained your experience. Add key words that are relevant to your industry in this section so recruiters can find you. Key words alone will get you 13 times more views than profiles with less specific statements, according to LinkedIn research. Make sure your summary is 40 words or more because the word count in this section increases the likelihood of your profile showing up in searches.

Experience 

 

This section should match the work experience outlined on your résumé and it should always be current. Do not make the mistake of only updating your profile when you’re in the job market. I landed my first six-figure position when I wasn’t looking to leave my current company. I updated my LinkedIn profile with every major event (promotion, award, education), and a recruiter found me!  

One tip for boosting the experience section is to upload copies of shareable work documents you created, video, and other media that relates to your work.

Featured Skills and Endorsements

 

Go through the entire skill list provided by LinkedIn and select the ones that relate to your skill set. Then ask your colleagues, friends and associates to endorse you on LinkedIn for those skills.

Do not be shy about asking for endorsements and keep in mind that the best time to ask is while you are currently working with the individual.

The Dos And Don’ts Of Writing An Online Dating Profile

There is such a lot of conflicting advice out there on how to write your online dating profile. And let’s be honest, it is important to get it right. I’ve found it helpful to think about your profile rather like a cross between a CV and a great piece of PR. Does that sound tough? Well, if you want to stand out from everyone else online then it’s well worth spending some time thinking about what you want to say and how you want to come across to potential dates. It’s not about making things up but it is about thinking creatively. It’s about showing rather than telling. Nobody wants to read yet another profile about loving country walks, watching films curled up on the sofa, having a good sense of humor …. yawn!

With a good few years dating experience behind me and now with the wonderful job of helping people create an Irresistible Dating Profile these are the dos and don’ts of profile writing that I’ve learned.

The Dos

  • Facts not fiction — if you are a couch potato don’t talk about your fitness schedule … unless you’re looking for someone to help you off the couch.
  • Do be happy to stand out — celebrate your unique qualities.
  • Be interesting — what’s the most interesting thing about you?
  • Be succinct — not quite Twitter-like but make your profile snappy.
  • Be specific — instead of saying ‘enjoy Friday nights out in the bar’ say ‘Friday evenings I can be found enjoying Cabernet Sauvignon with my oldest friends, catching up on each other’s latest adventures.’
  • Paint a picture of your life — fitness might be important to you (and 2 million others) so say more — you get your annual skiing fix in Boulder Colorado, you’re working towards the next Ironman.
  • Be different — share your unique hobbies or leisure activities. Stand out. Free diving, growing bonsai trees or burlesque dancing … share it!
  • Be playful with your username and headline — create a hook. You want possible matches curious to know more.
  • Do share some of your values — talk about those things that are important to you in life, you’re more likely to attract those who are compatible.
  • Make sure you’re in a great frame of mind before you write your profile — play your happy music and wear your lucky t-shirt.
  • Give details — If you say you love music, say which band and when you last saw them. If you love cooking say why and who inspires you. If you love gardening say how it makes you feel … You get the picture?

The Don’ts

  • Don’t be shy and uncertain about yourself. Go easy on the self deprecation.
  • Don’t tell lies, however minor because you will be found out! And a relationship that begins with a lie will not recover. If you’re 43 don’t say you’re 38. Just don’t.
  • Don’t make demands on the type of person you’re looking for … this is not a shopping list. Don’t start a sentence with, “you must be…” or, “I’ll only date someone who is…” Get over yourself!
  • Don’t be a victim. Don’t badmouth your ex and don’t talk about dating disasters. It’s not nice.
  • Don’t TELL what a cool person you are. Instead SHOW by sharing some great stories of adventures or a snapshot of your life.
  • Don’t start each sentence with “I” … that’s boring. Mix it up a little. Instead of “I love cycling and went to Paris to watch the final stage of the Tour de France. It was brilliant” How about, “Standing on the Champs Elysée for the final stage of the Tour de France was a dream come true for the avid cyclist I am. Being surrounded by so many likeminded people was inspiring.”
  • Don’t go on about things you dislike. It’s not attractive
  • Don’t go overboard on exclamation marks, emoticons. You’re not a teenager.
  • Don’t be afraid to say what you want. Looking for a life partner? Say it.
  • Don’t be lame — ‘my friends made me sign up’, ‘I don’t know what to write’, ‘my character? Don’t know really but my friends say I’m fun to be around’ … pleease…just don’t do it!
