Kaiser Permanente Awards $80,000 to Hawaii Public Health Institute

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente has awarded an $ 80,000 community benefit grant to Hawaii Public Health Institute, a nonprofit, policy-based organization bringing together community organizations, government, academia and businesses to improve the quality of life for people in Hawaii. The grant will support the development of policies and systems to build healthier communities and improve health and wellness in Hawaii.

HIPHI’s focus areas include activities supporting obesity prevention, including healthy eating and active living; oral health; school-based health; and other community health initiatives. It will continue to improve outreach and efforts through existing measures, such as the Coalition for Tobacco-Free Hawaii, the Obesity Prevention Task Force and Hawaii Coalition for Oral Health.

Additionally, HIPHI plans to identify statewide and county-specific health policy priorities, develop factsheets and infographics on key health issues, create a health policy agenda for 2019, conduct a statewide public opinion poll and share results with legislators, and conduct a policy and advocacy training. It will also develop and disseminate its annual legislative recap piece for partners, legislators and community members in 2019.

“Affecting health policy creates meaningful change at a statewide and countywide level, providing better access to resources and information for our residents,” said Dave Underriner, president Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Hawaii Region. “HIPHI’s legislative work, community outreach and advocacy are critical to creating healthier communities in Hawaii.”

About Hawaii Public Health Institute
Hawaii Public Health Institute (HIPHI) is a non-profit hub for health, bringing community-based organizations, government, academia, foundations and business together to improve the quality of life for the people of Hawaii. Claiming Public Space for Girls on International Youth Day

Today marks International Youth Day; this year’s theme, “Safe Spaces for Youth,” emphasizes the necessity of places where youth can gather and engage in constructive and meaningful discussions where they are free to express themselves. Citing positive effects of the “availability and accessibility of public spaces to youth such as parks, sporting facilities, cafés and community gardens,” The United Nations (UN) Youth Day program identifies creating public safe spaces as one of their priorities.

In 2015, UN Women declared public space to be “a social good, which should be safe, accessible, inclusive and available for all,” though many youth do not enjoy such accessibility. This is especially true for young women.

A. Warner/ICRW, Liberia

Public spaces are often male-dominated environments where violence against women—especially sexual harassment—is unfortunately far too common.

A global report by UN Women states that women face harassment in parks, markets, streets, buses and trains in both urban and rural areas,  and regardless of the country’s level of affluence, and the United Nations Population Fund reported that  “parents often keep their daughters inside the house, protected from any contact with males” by taking them out of school, increasing their domestic chores, or beginning to prepare them for marriage. According to a Population Council report, “for many girls in the developing world, the opportunity to move freely in the community becomes limited at the onset of puberty.” Such restriction on young women’s mobility results in isolation from friends and insufficient social contact, which has negative effects on girls’ health.

By working together to make safe public spaces for girls, communities, youth leaders and local governments can help combat gender-based violence in public. Creating public safe spaces uniquely for female youth is a crucial first step towards transforming all public spaces into areas where women feel safe and towards changing societal beliefs about who should occupy public space and how they should occupy it.

Communities can be extremely effective when they organize to help increase girls mobility in public spaces by creating support groups, establishing facilities, or reserving time solely for girls at an existing community center. The act of reclaiming public spaces in their community that are usually reserved for men and boys is incredibly empowering for young girls, as researchers observed in the International Center for Research on Women’s (ICRW) Parivartan for Girls program.

ICRW, Parivartan for Girls

Parivartan for Girls engaged 12 to 16 year-old girls in a slum community in Mumbai through an 18-month program that combined training session in kabaddi, a traditionally male-only wrestling-like sport popular in South Asia, with empowerment workshops. The program culminated in a kabaddi tournament in front of an audience of over 500 members of the community.

Playing kabaddi publicly helped the girls claim agency over their own bodies and movement. Just as significant is that their parents, who had previously been reluctant to let their daughters out of the home, expressed pride while watching them play.

The United Nations Population Fund strongly recommends that safe spaces for girls are “women and girl-led.” In the Parivartan for Girls program, participants were coached by educated, unmarried 18- to 24-year-old female mentors; they acted as “positive deviants” because they countered cultural gender and marriage norms and set an empowering example for their young mentees.

The positive impact of female youth leaders was also seen in ICRW’s recent ‘Tikambisane’ intervention, which engaged adolescent, HIV-positive girls in Zambia in six support group sessions that were all co-facilitated by two female peers living with HIV. Participants noted that having peers co-facilitating put them at ease and made them more comfortable discussing their experiences openly, and that their peer mentors “made them feel accepted and fostered a sense of unity.”

Safe spaces for girls are most effective when they are led by young female leaders—both of these programs remind us of the power of connecting girls with mentors from similar backgrounds with common experiences.

Robyne Hayes/ICRW

On a larger scale, to make public areas safe for girls, urban planning needs to be sensitive to and informed by gender. City governments should consider gender in their policies on infrastructure and urban planning. A city that is safe for girls needs to include clean, well-lit public toilets that do not have broken doors. It has well-lit streets and efficient, secure public transportation.

To improve the security of the transit system for women, the cities of Montreal and Toronto in Canada began to allow women traveling at night to get off between stops so that they didn’t have to walk as far to their destination in the dark. In Vienna, Austria, upon observing that, as girls and boys turned ten, the number of girls in public parks “dropped off dramatically,” but the number of boys stayed the same, city planners added areas for sports other than football and footpaths to increase accessibility. City officials noticed an increase in the number of girls using the space “almost immediately.”

Madhumita Das/ICRW, India

As a teenage girl growing up in Washington, D.C., I’ve been fortunate to enjoy broad freedom in my mobility. I generally feel safe while walking to the bus stop, riding on the Metro and traveling around D.C. Thinking of the girls whose parents did not want them to participate in the Parivartan program and play kabaddi, I realized just how lucky I am just to be able to play soccer at the local public park with friends — without fear of harassment.

Everyone plays a role in creating safe spaces for girls. Communities can contribute to this goal by creating empowering, girl-centered programs, and city governments can contribute by factoring women’s needs into their urban planning—but youth voices need to be included in all of these efforts, from project planning and implementation to monitoring and evaluation.

Now is the time to create safe spaces for youth worldwide.

Emma Markus is currently serving as Communications Intern for ICRW and is a Senior in the Communication Arts Program at Montgomery Blair High School. Emma also founded her own charitable organization called Give + Grow (Maa tsi //hoa), which sponsors girl’s education in Tsintsabis, Namibia, and is a writer for Affinity. She serves as the President of her school’s Model United Nations Club and is also a leader in its Girl Up Club.

Catherine Oxenberg on Losing Her Daughter to the Sex Cult NXIVM: ‘Going Public Was a Last Resort’

Photo illustraiton by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast

Long before the arrest of Keith Raniere and the summer of headlines about his alleged sex-cult consigliere Allison Mack, there was Catherine Oxenberg.

The former Dynasty star and royal descendant appeared on Megyn Kelly Today in November 2017, cementing her role as the face of the uprising against Raniere and his cult, NXIVM. Oxenberg brought the media a story that was almost too strange to be true, reporting her daughter’s brainwashing into a secret sorority where women were trained as “slaves,” branded, and forced to follow orders at the risk of punishment or public humiliation. According to court documents—and unbeknownst to many of the initiates—Raniere, aka “Vanguard,” was the ultimate “master” behind the whole operation.

In 2011, Oxenberg introduced her 19-year-old daughter, India, to NXIVM’s Executive Success Programs, believing that the course would help her grow as a young entrepreneur. Over the next seven years, Oxenberg watched as India slowly transformed from an individual with dreams and aspirations of her own into an instrument and victim of Raniere’s increasingly sinister machinations. In the new book Captive: A Mother’s Crusade to Save Her Daughter from a Terrifying Cult, Oxenberg juxtaposes her personal journey from mother to cult buster against Raniere and NXIVM’s downfall. While the book triumphantly ends with Raniere in handcuffs, Oxenberg had no idea when she began to chronicle her crusade that NXIVM’s demise would soon be making headlines across the world.

New York City Completely Bans Smoking in Public Housing

The New York City Housing Authority issued a ban on smoking in all New York City public housing (including smoking inside apartments) as of July 30.

The policy “prohibits the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and hookah pipes in indoor common areas, within public housing units, in administrative offices, and in outdoor areas within 25 feet of NYCHA buildings,” according to NYCHA’s website.

NYCHA issued the ban after the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) mandated that all public housing had to be smoke-free.

In a statement from the New York City Mayor’s Office, “the final smoke-free rule was announced at the end of the Obama Administration, under HUD Secretary Julian Castro. It was published in December 2016, but did not take effect until February 2017.”

“Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, healthy home free from harmful second-hand cigarette smoke,” said then-Secretary Castro in a press release. “HUD’s smoke-free rule is a reflection of our commitment to using housing as a platform to create healthy communities. By working collaboratively with public housing agencies, HUD’s rule will create healthier homes for all of our families and prevent devastating and costly smoking-related fires.”

“My office has long warned the public about the dangers of smoking, including second-hand smoke,” said then-U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy. “For children who are exposed to second-hand smoke, it can mean everything from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and ear infections to asthma. Protecting our children and families from the devastation caused by secondhand smoke must be a priority for all sectors of our society, including public housing.”

When HUD first proposed the ban, the policy was criticized by homeless advocates who said it could increase the amount of homeless—addicted smokers who violate the ban could potentially be evicted.

ThinkProgress, a progressive news site, said that smoking bans in public housing was essentially, “nannying the poor.” From a blog post at ThinkProgress: “…people who are eligible for public services of various kinds still have to contend with a variety of other attempts to micromanage their lives and choices from afar.”

NYCHA has been under fire for providing sub-standard living conditions for public housing tenants. From reports of vermin infestation, rampant mold, to a recent report that more than 800 children living in NYCHA housing tested positive for elevated levels of lead.

My Public Divorce Announcement from Starbucks [Opinion]

By now, you have either seen or heard what went down at a local Starbucks in Philadelphia. Some were shocked. Others were not. The idea that you can get arrested in the birth city of our nation simply for just, well, being there—or more to the point, being a Black male in the company of, and waiting for, another Black male for the purpose of putting money in said establishment’s pockets—in 21st century America, should make everyone with any [modicum] of sense and decency, pardon my French, pissed the **** off.

What was worse was the knee jerk response.

“Well, they must have been up to something.”

“They should’ve just left.”

“They were asked to leave.”

“Well, you can’t loiter.”

Negro, please.

I hit up a Starbucks two, sometimes four times a week—or at least I used to. The Union Square and West 8th Street ones are my favorites because they are open late and super train-accessible. I’ve seen people of all colors and ages, come in and camp out without as much as buying a bag of popcorn. I’ve seen people of all colors and ages, come in, use the bathroom and leave.

You don’t establish Starbucks music, offer free Wi-Fi, have a location on every other block in every major city, and keep late hours because you want people to zip in and out. You are encouraging people to stick around for awhile.

I’m not shocked at the police response to all of this. It’s been clearly established through words and action that police’s primary objective is to protect and serve each other. So I took their response as the sky being blue and water being wet. The remarks made by Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson, while well intended, came across more as an attempt to save the company PR image—which is pretty shot to hell at this point—rather than take a higher moral ground. When Johnson said, “Our store manager never intended for these men to be arrested,” it put me into ‘Hulk smash mode’: WHY ELSE DO YOU CALL THE POLICE! Sigh…

All of this said memory triggers I try not to dwell on too long. I remember when my brother and I would get followed around by store employees when we went clothes shopping for school. My brother told me something that I still apply and will paraphrase:

Do not put money in the pockets of those who can’t respect all of me.

That said, I’m done with Starbucks.

I cannot, in good faith, subsidize a company that did something so cruel and callous and then limps along in trying to “make it right.” I will find another spot to have my green tea and buttered bagel. I will readjust my schedule so I can get my writing/web surfing/email I need to get my groove on. The quiet room at the 42nd Street Library has been mighty good to me. The divorce is final and that’s my new lady now.

Black and brown folks have power. Economic power. It’s time we start using it to support and create our own businesses and build up our own communities. That time is now—especially when we are at a point in history (again) where our so-called leaders have essentially told us we are on our own anyway.

The choice is ours.

What to Wear for Public Speaking

what to wear for public speakingI’ve got a short little speech to give for an alumni mentoring thing in a few weeks, so my attention has turned to the important stuff: what to wear. (I’m being sarcastic here — obviously the content of your speech is the most important part!) But, considering that this is a fashion blog for overachieving chicks, I thought it might make an interesting conversation, particularly for those of you who do this more regularly — what are your tips for what to wear for public speaking engagements, whether it’s giving a CLE, speaking at a class, being interviewed on TV, giving a presentation to the board, or being in front of a jury? What should you consider for different kinds of speaking engagements? What clothes and outfits strike the best balance between comfort/professionalism for a public speaker?

Some considerations I’ve thought of for what to wear for public speaking engagements:

  • If you’ll be standing behind a podium the whole time… Comfortable shoes for the win! Also note that pockets matter less because you can put your iPhone/bag/etc behind the podium.
  • If you’ll be seated on a stage or dais:  You may want to consider pants so you don’t have to worry about how your skirt or dress looks while you’re seated. (This is where the mirror/chair test comes in handy…) If you do go with a skirt, know your audience — pantyhose may be appropriate. (Factors to consider here: the age of the most important people in the audience, the location of where you’re speaking. Speaking to judges in the South will require a different consideration than, say, speaking to college-age kids in the Pacific NW.) Other considerations, at least if you’re me: consider what will be eye level for people — since my ACL surgery I have an uglyish 1.5″ scar right under my knee that would definitely making me lean towards pants if there were any sort of stage/raised dais situation, if only because I’d be worrying that everyone in the audience was wondering where I got the scar and why I didn’t cover it. (I still wear bare legs with dresses for regular networking events, but I do tend to cover the scar with concealer.)
  • If you will be seated for the presentation but standing to network later, you may want to avoid fabrics like linen or cotton that wrinkle easily. I would also think that any jacket should be unbuttoned if you’re seated for the long term, if only for comfort and so the jacket/blazer lays better. I know some newscasters make sure to “sit on the blazer” so the shoulders don’t hike up when speaking.
  • If there will be an “onscreen” component to speaking, either because you’re being interviewed on air or because you’re doing something like, say, a CLE where it will be videotaped for posterity in the future, you may want to consider adding color into the mix, particularly near your face. I’ve noted at legal conferences in the past that women speaking seemed to have a “power red lip;” if you don’t want to take the risk of your lipstick fading during/after the event you can also just choose a colorful blouse, necklace, blazer, or scarf. (In our last discussion on what to wear for a television appearance, guest poster Sally McGraw noted that jewel tones work for almost everyone!)
  • If you’ll be at a blackboard/whiteboard during the presentation, you may want to make sure you know how your outfit and hair look from behind — make sure you’ve cut your vents on your blazer/skirt (if you’re wearing either and they have vents) and that you like how everything’s laying. If you’re worried about VPL, you may want to consider a thong or other no-VPL underwear.

What are your thoughts, readers — what are your best tips on what to wear for public speaking? For those of you who do public speaking a lot, do you have a uniform or other “power outfit” that you rely on for comfort/conveying professionalism?

Why ‘The President Show’ Star Can’t Go Out in Public as Trump Anymore

Comedy Central

Anthony Atamanuik’s Donald Trump went out in a blaze of surprisingly poignant glory at the end of his Christmas special last December. Performing an Aimee Mann cover from his Oval Office set, he warned the American people, “It’s not going to stop, until you wise up.”

That might have been it for the best Trump impersonator in comedy—Alec Baldwin included—after Comedy Central quietly declined to pick up The President Show for a second season. But given an unexpected ratings bump for the Christmas show, the network has decided to double-down on the hour-long special format, beginning with this week’s Make America Great-A-Thon: A President Show Special, airing Tuesday night at 11 p.m. while The Daily Show is on hiatus.

“I’m actually really happy about the specials,” Atamanuik tells me by phone from New York a few days before the telethon-themed hour is set to air. He’s just left the floor of the New York Stock Exchange where he was taping a TV interview and no, he says, they did not let him ring the bell. “I actually said to the guy who showed me the bell, ‘What happens if I ring it? Do they all stop?’ And he said, ‘Do not even joke about that.’”

What to Put On Your Wedding Registry (And: How to Deal When Your Wedding Registry is Public)

Today we have a great question from reader K, who wants an open thread about what to put on your wedding registry — and makes the interesting point that her wedding registry will be public. Here’s her question:

Would LOVE it if you would consider doing a “wedding registry” advice/crowdsourcing post! I am registering now, and am a senior lawyer & manager in-house in big tech, living w fiance but wanting to upgrade our dishes etc. I’m sensitive to the fact that whatever I register for will be visible on the internet to opposing counsel, my reports and clients, and even regulators etc. that I deal with on a regular basis (who I KNOW google me). What do we need? And what do we need to know?

Such a good question, K! For my $ .02, I really suggest you think about the kind of life you and your partner want — not just what you think you want. You go to Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s and you suddenly feel like, well, of COURSE we need $ 5000+ worth of crystal and china… but do you feel like washing it by hand or chancing it in the dishwasher? How many of your friends do you actually trust with an $ 80 wine glass — particularly after he or she has had a few? We registered for a lot of stuff that was, I think, overly fancy for us and our shared lives (those links go to my patterns) — and that was before the kids came. These days we’re down to a few unbreakable martini and wine glasses and eating off unbreakable Corelle plates I’ve had since college. You could say, “ah, but the kids will grow up!” — but by that point my mother may have tried to downsize her fancy plates and barware to my possession, to say nothing of the fancy crystal and china she inherited from her mother or MIL.

I’m not saying this stuff is frivolous or unnecessary — but I do think I did a poor job of picking my own registry items. So I’d LOVE to hear what readers have loved on their registry — and what you’ve seen done when the couple says, eh, we’ve got what we need, thanks! Some fun newer registry options if you haven’t already seen them include Zola, Blueprint, and more — you can register for bigger ticket items like furniture, home remodeling, or vacations — and you can facilitate group gifting as well. The NYT also wrote recently(ish) about wedding registries for charity. Readers here (and elsewhere, like on the Knot) seem to roll their eyes at these nontraditional registries a lot, though, so know your situation, including your own family and friends as well as your partner’s. Another option that always exists, of course, is to tell your guests “we want your presence, not your presents!” — since, of course, wedding-related travel is already expensive.

Married readers, what did you LOVE from your registry? If you didn’t really need a ton of stuff, how did you handle it? For those of you who were wary about having a public wedding registry, how did you handle it?

Psst: you can also check out our recent discussion of how to plan a wedding when you work long hours, as well as all our tips on how to handle wedding etiquette at work.what to put on your wedding registry if you already have everything - image of wineglasses Relatedly: we’ve also discussed when we REALLY set up house (in which I shared my story of splurging on nice dishes for myself well before any wedding (or partner) because I liked ’em).

NPS Opens the Home of Carter G. Woodson, ‘Father of Black History,’ to the Public

In honor of Black History Month, the National Park Service (NPS) will grant the public access to the home of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African American writer and historian known as the “Father of Black History.”

Born the son of freed slaves in 1875, Woodson made a lifelong commitment to researching and preserving black history. In 1912, the sharecropper-turned-scholar became the second African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard University. He created “Negro History Week” in 1926, which was later adapted into Black History Month in 1976. The renowned scholar and author also penned over a dozen books, including the notable The Mis-Education of the Negro.

Now, for the month of February, the public can tour the Washington, D.C., home where he lived from 1922 up until his death in 1950. The 140-year-old house is where Woodson conceptualized the idea of “Negro History Week” and spent a substantial amount of time researching and documenting African American history. Before Woodson, there was little to no accurate recordings of black contributions in American history. The house is also where the Omega Psi Phi member founded and operated the Associated Publishers Press starting in 1921. “It was one of the first publishing companies to publish historical works of African American history,” said Vince Vaise, chief of visitor services at the National Park Service, reports WTOP.

The home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 before becoming vacant in the ’90s. The property was then acquired by the NPS in 2005 and reopened last year following years of renovations.

The Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site, located in the D.C. neighborhood of Shaw, is currently open to the public Thursdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bobby Brown Says Bobbi Kristina Died Months Before Public Knew

We’re learning MORE from Bobby Browns recent sit down with Us Weekly. One of the things he did was give conflicting dates about Bobbi Kristina’s passing, leading some to believe she died long before the family announced it to the public.

Instagram Photo

Brown died from lobar pneumonia on July 26, 2015, after being in a coma for nearly six months. However, according to Bobby, his daughter actually died three days before his birthday (Feb.5th), which would have been February 2, 2015.

“We do our private things to honor her,” he said. “She passed away three days before my birthday, so we definitely honor her at all times,” he said, noting that he would like for fans to remember Bobbi Kristina as someone who “was talented, beautiful and loved life.”

A possible explanation to the date confusion was reported by ILOSM:

Bobbi Kristina was found in her bathtub, unconscious with a concoction of several drugs in her system on January 31, 2015. After doctors determined she had “significantly diminished” brain function, they placed her in a medically induced coma and told Bobby Brown that chances of her fully recovering would be “a miracle.” By February 2, 2015, it was reported that Bobbi Kristina was relocated to Emory University Hospital, she remained in a coma and on a medical ventilator. Thus, Bobby’s statement that ‘she died three days before his birthday,’ adds up.

“She was a beautiful young lady. And what she wanted to do with her life, I wish everybody could have seen,” Brown exclusively told Us Weekly of the late daughter he shared with ex-wife Whitney Houston. “Music, entertainment. She was better than me. She was better than her mother.”

After Bobbi’s passing, Brown created the non-profit organization Bobby Kristina Serenity House, which raises awareness about domestic violence and provides housing and aid to victims.

“I just think people should be aware that they have someplace to go. When you are going through bad times and you are going through being abused, Bobbi Kristina’s Serenity House is there for you,” Bobby Brown told Us. “That’s the easiest way I can say it. It’s too much. Too many women and too many men are being hurt by this disease that people have, abusing people. It’s just not right. I need to do something about it.”

Meanwhile, on March 4, Bobby will host the Celebration of Serenity Gala, which would have also been Bobbi Kristina’s 25th birthday.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii Joins Hawaii Public Health Institute to Focus on Public Health Priorities

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii is supporting Hawaii Public Health Institute with a $ 80,000 community benefit grant to continue their mission of improving population health through policy, systems and environmental changes. HIPHI’s efforts to research, identify and advocate for public health priorities will improve the health and wellness of Hawaii residents by shaping policies and systems that affect them.

HIPHI has released its 2018 Public Health Forecast and Priority Legislation agenda identifying the state’s top public health concerns for the year. HIPHI’s public health agenda was developed in collaboration with partners and distributed to lawmakers and Gov. David Ige on opening day of the 2018 Hawaii state legislative session. The agenda identified tobacco prevention and control, healthy eating and active living, family health, population health, environmental health, economic justice, education and healthy workforce as areas of focus for lawmakers.

Among the top priorities are tobacco-related education and regulation, with a focus on electronic smoking devices and youth tobacco prevention. HIPHI’s activities surrounding tobacco prevention include a legislative informational briefing on electronic smoking devices; bills to tax and regulate these devices and introduce tobacco-free school buffer zones; and an educational video on the dangers of tobacco and vaping. Priority legislation for HIPHI also includes promoting healthy beverages in children’s restaurant meals and establishing positions in the Department of Education to implement a Farm to School program.

“After listening to our stakeholders, conducting extensive research and analyzing policies from different states, we are excited to introduce our first public health legislative agenda and collaborate with lawmakers this session,” said Jessica Yamauchi, executive director of Hawaii Public Health Institute. “With so many issues to tackle, we’re grateful for the support of Kaiser Permanente and our partners as we work together to shape policies that will have a positive impact on our community.”

“HIPHI brings together community organizations, government officials, business leaders and researchers in support of a common goal: to improve overall health and wellness in Hawaii,” said Frank Richardson, vice president and regional counsel, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “Its mission aligns with our efforts to address the most critical health issues facing our community today.”

About Hawaii Public Health Institute

Bill Cosby Performs in Public for First Time In Nearly 3 Years Ahead of Sexual Assault Retrial

(PHILADELPHIA) — Bill Cosby has performed in public for the first time since sex scandals embroiled him in 2015, telling stories and honoring old friends in his hometown on Monday as a spring retrial looms in his criminal sexual assault case.

The 80-year-old entertainer took the stage Monday night at a Philadelphia jazz club in his first public performance since May 2015. His last comedy tour ended amid protests as about 60 women were coming forward to accuse him of drugging and molesting them over five decades, something he has denied.

Cosby is scheduled for an April 2 retrial on charges he drugged and molested a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. He has pleaded not guilty and remains free on bail. His first trial ended with a hung jury last year. Jury selection for his retrial will start March 29.

Cosby’s spokesman notified reporters of the comedy performance about two hours before he was to take the stage at the LaRose Jazz Club. The show was part of a program honoring jazz musician Tony Williams.

The performance is Cosby’s latest step back into the spotlight he’s mostly shied from since his December 2005 arrest.

Two weeks ago, Cosby invited reporters to tag along as he ate dinner with old friends at a Philadelphia restaurant.

Over the weekend, Cosby’s social media featured photos of him visiting a barber and a cafe in the area and showing support for the Philadelphia Eagles, who won Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the Minnesota Vikings and secured a spot in the Super Bowl.

Are Divorce Records Public?

petition-for-divorce-and-wedding-ring

Filing for a divorce—even amicably—is tough. For some, emotions run high and tensions feel never-ending, and it can be overwhelming navigating a complex legal system and filing document after document until your divorce is finalized.

While going through this tumultuous process, you may not have had time to consider what happens to your divorce paperwork once it’s filed.

You may not know that most court documents are public record (meaning the public can read it) unless there is a specific reason why they shouldn’t be. This includes your divorce papers (and even your Separation Agreement, if filed).

In this post, find out what a public record is, what records are private, and if you are able to hide your divorce papers if you’d prefer that no one have access to them.

What is a Public Record?

A public record is a record that has been filed with a public office. They are documents that must be retained by institutions and made available to the public, meaning any person can inspect, examine, and copy these materials regardless of the purpose. This obligation often doesn’t apply to insignificant pieces of paper, like a voicemail or an initial draft.

Public record applies to government, law, business, and more. Plenty of institutions are required to make certain documents accessible in an effort to be transparent.

Sometimes, the only thing stopping people from reading whatever court-filed document they want to read is that they do not know how to access them and, when they do find them, the expense. But it’s easier—and cheaper—than you might think.

As of 1999, cases are held by the courts electronically and are accessible through the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) service.

Cases before 1999 can be accessed at the court where they were filed or at a Federal Records Center.

In short, with a small fee per document and an additional charge per page, just about anyone can read your “confidential” divorce documents.

Which Divorce Documents are Not Public Record?

Many filed divorce documents are public record, but there are times when certain documents should not be accessible to the public.

Sometimes a court matter involves a sensitive issue, and the records could be harmful if made public. In such situations, the court might “seal” the court documents, including the court transcript or any filed documents. A sealed record can only be viewed by obtaining a court order.

Courts might agree to seal divorces that deal with children, domestic violence, private identification numbers or information, or propriety business information. They might also seal documents with false allegations to prevent the spread of misinformation.

How to Get Your Record Sealed

Generally, a court won’t seal any documents without a request, and even if you request it, the court could say no if they don’t think it’s necessary.

For example, usually a court won’t seal information for inconsequential reasons like personal embarrassment. This means you might want to avoid writing a tell-all statement in your divorce papers unless the information clearly supports your claim.

However, if you want your divorce documents sealed, you should, at the very least, try by filing a motion.

With a valid reason as to why this document could be detrimental to you or others, the courts may oblige.

Sometimes, asking to redact a portion of your divorce papers as opposed to all the documents filed in one case is an easier request for the courts to accommodate. So, if necessary, try your luck with a lesser inquiry.

In some states, you may be able to ask the judge to waive court filing requirements, which means your confidential information won’t be accessible to the public because it wasn’t filed with an institution that’s required to keep its records.

Knowing Your Divorce Papers Are Public

The headache of divorce can worsen with the thought that your friends and family are privy to your confidential information, which is why it’s important you know what public records are, which records are sealed, and how you can seal your records (if you’re eligible).

Be sure to make the right decisions about what to include as evidence in your divorce and, if you need to include sensitive information, it might not be a bad idea to take the necessary steps and attempt to seal it, even if your request is unsuccessful.

So, You Started a Business, But Are You Ready to Work with a Public Relations Pro?

Public Relations

Nearly every business owner dreams of getting publicity for their company. But before you hire a public relations pro, you should establish a strong foundation for your business or your efforts could be a waste of time, money, and resources.

So, think you’re ready for PR? Use the questions below to assess your PR readiness:

Public Relations (Image: iStock/SIphotography)

1. Is there a product or service available? Do you have a website as well as a sign-up form on your site where people can leave their email address to receive updates?

PR campaigns and press coverage can drive substantial traffic to your site. Let’s say an article featuring your business goes viral attracting over 3 million views and 400,000 shares, if you don’t have a product available to sell or a place to capture potential customer’s information, it’s a recipe for failure.

2. Have you identified your business goals and put systems in place to monitor your progress?

Regardless if you hire a PR agency or freelancer, an effective PR pro should understand your goals and have access to your analytics, which can help track web traffic and measure the impact or ROI of any media outreach or public relations campaigns.

3. Can you clearly communicate your point of difference in the market?

Understanding why your product stands out from competitors is critical to attracting the right audience and being featured in the media. Your point of difference can include your story, product features, or benefits.

4. Do you have a strong range of promotional assets such as a branded website, professional photos, and active social media accounts?

These things establish your company’s credibility.

5. Do you have the budget to hire a public relations firm or consultant?

PR services are typically billed hourly, monthly retainer, or project basis. Depending on where you live, PR services can range from $ 1,500 per month for a small local business to $ 50,000 for a large corporation. And take note, this may not include expenses such as travel, photographers, printing, makeup artist, etc.

6. Do you have the time and patience to commit to the public relations process?

Success doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes it can take at least three to six months for a PR professional to launch a successful campaign and land media coverage.

Chance the Rapper Announces $2.2 Million Donation to Chicago Public Schools [Video]

It was just six months ago that Chance the Rapper donated $ 1 million to Chicago Public Schools, and now he’s happy to announce that his organization has raised $ 2.2 million to help fund arts education in 20 Chicago schools.

via Complex:

The press conference, which was streamed on Periscope, and which you can watch in its entirety above, saw Chance get a little theatrical. He went full Steve Jobs for his presentation, wearing Jobs’ patented black turtleneck and jeans—and even using a clicker.

During the presentation, Chance discussed other Social Works initiatives like the OpenMike program, Parade to the Polls, and more before discussing the New Chance fund. “Every contribution…brings this city and this nation closer to providing a well-rounded quality education for each and every child,” he said. “Funding quality education for public [school] students is the most important investment a community can make.”

Here’s a list of the 20 schools that will receive grants from the New Chance fund. Each school will get $ 100,000 over the next three years.

Liam and Noel Gallagher ‘will reform Oasis by 2019’ after public spats, says man who discovered them

OASIS will have got back together by 2019 – says the man who discovered them.

The reunion everyone has been waiting for would come on the tenth anniversary of LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER’s bust-up that split the band.

Noel and Liam Gallagher will reform Oasis by 2019, according to the man who discovered them[/caption]

I can reveal that the man who first signed them — music industry legend ALAN McGEE — is convinced the pair will patch things up and, ahem, not Look Back In Anger any more.

Alan said: “There is a very strong chance they will get back together within the next two years. Watch what happens.”

There’s been no love lost between the Gallaghers since 2009, when a backstage row at a Paris festival ended with Liam swinging a guitar at Noel’s head “like an axe”.

Alan is no stranger to the brothers’ rocky relationship after signing Oasis to his independent label Creation Records in 1993.

And his comments come amid speculation that Liam is preparing to join Noel at the sold-out We Are Manchester benefit concert on September 9.

The gig will mark the reopening of Manchester Arena following the terror attack that killed 22 people at an ARIANA GRANDE concert there in May.

Alan added: “It is brilliant Noel is opening the arena. Ultimately, I think Liam will be happy he is doing it. They have their public spats but at the end of the day, they are brothers.

“I have never heard Liam say anything really bad about Noel.

“He might take the p**s but it has never been anything over the line.”

Perhaps it’s best not to mention here how Liam described Noel as a “sad f**k” after failing to perform at Ariana’s One Love concert following the attack.

Alan is convinced that the success of Liam’s forthcoming debut solo album, As You Were, will pave the way for a reunion between the warring brothers.

Liam Gallagher ends emotional first solo gig for the Manchester victims with acoustic version Oasis classic Live Forever

He said: “I have heard Liam’s new album and it is great. For what it is worth, it’s a classic. It’s incredible.

“That has got to help when it comes to Oasis reforming because they’re not going to come back unless both have equal status.

“Liam is going to be big, Noel is going to be big.

“The fact that Liam is going to come back with such a successful album weirdly helps the chances of them reforming.”

Along with millions of Oasis fans across the globe, I’ve got the Champagne (Supernova) on ice.

5 Lessons to Learn About Black Public Relations Pioneers

Inez Kaiser, Ofield Dukes, Moss Kendrix—these aren’t names found in any textbook or spoken of in classrooms. However, these are the names of change agents, who are credited with breaking down barriers for people of color in the public relations industry. The Museum of Public Relations highlighted these and other past black pioneers who made significant contributions to the communications field, at the event “Celebrating Black PR History,” on Wednesday, May 3, at Baruch College in New York City.

The Museum of Public Relations celebrated hidden black history makers in PR. From left to right: Judith Harrison, president of PRSA Foundation; Donald Singletary, president The Singletary Group; Terry Edmonds, strategic communications leader, IBM and first African American presidential speechwriter; David Albritton, executive director, global product communications, General Motors. “These are stories that have never been told, but we needed them to be told because they’re not in any textbook,” says Shelley Spector, founder of the Museum of Public Relations and president of Spector Corporate Communications and Public Relations.

Spector, an adjunct professor at Baruch College and NYU, says the aim of the event and the museum’s exhibit on the pioneers is to inform students and PR professionals of color of the role models that look like they do and who share some of the same life experiences, in hopes of attracting and retaining more diverse millennials into the field.

The event included two panels; one showcased past PR pioneers, and the other discussed the experiences of young black PR professionals, including how they handle challenges and provide a voice for a more dynamic and inclusive public relations industry.

Terry Edmonds, strategic communications leader at IBM and the first African American presidential speechwriter, discusses his history as a communications professional. (Image: The Museum of Public Relations)

Speakers Terry Edmonds, the first African American presidential speechwriter under Bill Clinton; David Albritton, executive director of global product development communications at General Motors; Judith Harrison, president of the PRSA Foundation and senior vice president of diversity and inclusion at Weber Shandwick; and Donald Singletary, president of the Singletary Group and adjunct professor at Baruch College and Syracuse University; all discussed the vital role that the black trailblazers played, and the powerful imprint they left on the field.

Trisch Smith, executive vice president at Edelman, a public relations firm, moderated the second panel of young professionals in the industry. Together they shared a candid conversation about what it means to be black in a mostly white field. This panel resonated with many of the event’s young attendees.

5 Key Takeaways From the Event:

1. Black PR Is Rooted in Activism

“What is black PR?”  Donald Singleton asks the crowd. It was a question, asked by a white student, that got him thinking about this. “There may not be something you can label distinctly as black public relations, but there is something very unique about the way public relations has been practiced by African Americans,” he says.

“The roots of it lie in many different aspects. For example, advocacy, rights for freedom, and fighting against segregation and exclusion from society and the workplace, which involved active participation from different aspects of the community,” he continues. “The black church, black colleges and universities, black press, and black athletes, and entertainers have all come together to play a role in producing an effort to include our voice in public relations, to move forward African Americans and empower them as a community and consumers.”

He stresses to the younger generation that, though it’s commonplace now to see a lot of wealthy black entertainers and athletes with powerful influence, there was a time when this wasn’t true.

2. Inez Kaiser Founded the First African American, Female-Owned PR Firm

This Kansas-born “hidden figure” in PR started out as an economics teacher. After deciding to embark on a career in public relations, she quickly realized where her life’s work would be. In 1957, this pioneer opened Inez Kaiser & Associates, the first public relations firm headed by an African American woman in the U.S.  Her firm was also the first African American-owned business to open in Kansas City, Missouri, according to the Museum of PR, and her first big client was 7-Up. She passed away in 2016.

3. Early PR Practitioners Fought Hard to Showcase the Power of Black Consumers in the U.S.

A huge problem faced by black previous public relations practitioners is that mainstream organizations and media outlets simply did not believe there was any value to the base of African Americans. Who helped to change this? Among others, Moss Kendrix, also known as “the father of black public relations.” He was also Coca-Cola’s first African American marketing specialist.

In 1944, the Morehouse alum started his own public relations firm in Washington, D.C., The Moss Kendrix Organization. There, he landed a list of clients that targeted black consumers, including Ford Motor Company and Carnation. The Coca-Cola Company hired Kendrix after he consistently reached out to executives, detailing how to target the African American consumer base. His persistence paved the way to get large companies to recognize African Americans’ potential revenue source for corporate America.

Judith Harrison of PRSA briefly spoke of Harvey C. Russell, citing him as the pioneer of niche marketing. He was the first African American to be made vice president at a major corporation, PepsiCola, in 1962, after beginning as a field representative in 1952. During his 33-year stay with the company, he played a pivotal role in Pepsi’s reach toward the African American market, and many credit him with making the company more socially responsible, at the time.

Another revered PR pioneer is Ofield Dukes, who is also known for getting mainstream companies to understand the value of blacks as a consumer market and as an emerging power. He worked with clients like AT&T and Anheuser-Busch at his D.C.-based firm, Ofield Dukes & Associates.

4. Young PR Practitioners: Don’t Stress Over Titles and Be Business Savvy

David Albritton told the story of his choice to move from a defense company, where he was vice president of communications and reported to the CEO, to General Motors, where he ended up working in a position two levels down from his prior position, noting that it’s not so much about titles as it is about what you can learn, and where you can contribute most.

“I looked at it as a growth opportunity,” he says. “It’s what you relate to, what access do you have, who do you influence, and how much decision-making authority do you have that will allow you to learn, be an influence, and have a seat at the table.”

Another key tip he offered, was to learn the business side of your company.

“If you’re going to be considered for the more senior roles later on, you’ve got to become a business partner, and stop being just a PR practitioner,” Albritton says. “You need to understand how money is made at your organization, whether it’s a corporation or nonprofit. How do you attach public relations to how an organization is making money?”

5. Make Sure You Have Something to Say, Especially If You’re the Only Person of Color

The “Diversity on the Front Lines” panel discussed how young PR professionals can make an impact. Speakers from left to right are: Trisch Smith, executive vice president at Edelman; Vernon James of Ruder Finn; Danielle Richards of the Arthur W. Page Society; Cameron French of Burson-Marsteller; Fred Garcia, The LAGRANT Foundation, and Troy Thompson of PRSA. (Image: The Museum of Public Relations)

At the event’s second panel, “Diversity on the Front Lines,” Danielle C. Richards, the diversity and inclusion lead at Arthur W. Page Society, notes the importance of speaking up. “It’s important to understand that your voice is so important, and that your opinion and perspective could be the one thing that changes your company’s trajectory,” she says.

Albritton also stresses that it’s important for young professionals to have the courage to be heard. “If you are the expert and have the courage to speak up on behalf of your profession, then you will get looked upon as that expert,” Albritton says. “You will be invited into the conversation more often, if you’re going to [do more than just] sit there as a notetaker. Have something to say.”

5 Tips From Public Relations Pros That Will Elevate Your Career

public relations tipspublic relations tips (Image: iStock.com/PeopleImages)

Public relations is about putting the best foot and the best face of a brand forward, but it’s also about quickly doing damage control when things don’t go as planned.

The fast-paced track at which PR professionals are required to act matched with the impact and influence that they must have on others about what their brand stands for is a skill set that can easily transfer into any other industry and to any professional, from the corporate to the self-employed.

Whether you are looking to improve upon your personal or professional brand, struggling with how to have your voice heard, or aiming to fix a crisis, here are a few key PR skills Black Enterprise learned at (and after) the Museum of Public Relations Celebrating Black PR Pioneers event, held on May 3 at Baruch College in New York City.

These easily transferable tips bestowed by budding and seasoned public relations practitioners teach the importance of building a solid brand, taking chances, and becoming an influencer in your own professional or personal space. Read on to take yourself to the next level.

Find and use your voice, especially if you’re the only minority in the room

Trisch Smith, executive vice president at PR firm Edelman, stresses to professionals of any field that you belong, and certainly deserve, to be in the room and to have a seat at the table.

“And not only do you have a voice, but your ideas, insights, and perspectives matter. Whether you’re an intern or a senior executive, don’t allow your voice to be muted,” she said in an email to Black Enterprise.

“Diversity of background, thought, and experience are crucial when helping companies and brands navigate and provide solutions to society’s most complex challenges. Your contributions could be the key to your client’s or company’s success as well as your professional and personal growth.”

Danielle C. Richards, the diversity and inclusion lead at Arthur W. Page Society, also echoed this sentiment.

“It’s important to understand that your voice is so important, and that your opinion and perspective could be the one thing that changes your company’s trajectory,” she said.

Know the business side of your company

This one is easy for entrepreneurs. But for the corporate ladder climbers, whether in public relations or another industry, it’s important to understand the impact your role might play on the company’s bottom line.

“If you’re going to be considered for more senior roles later on, you’ve got to become a business partner and stop being just a PR practitioner,” says David Albritton, executive director, Global Product Communications at General Motors. “You need to understand how money is made at your organization, whether it’s a corporation or nonprofit.”

Don’t let fear consume you

“It’s quite normal to be a little uneasy, especially when navigating uncharted waters, but don’t let fear paralyze or stop you from being and doing you,” Smith says.

“Moreover, don’t be afraid to fail. Oftentimes, our greatest successes and lessons come from perceived failures, mistakes, or missteps. You will only regret the time you lost, the chances you missed, or the opportunities you passed up because of fear.”

Personal hardships can bring professional ease

Ever wonder why some people just seem to handle challenges and crises so calmly, not freaking out under pressure? According to Troy P. Thompson, digital communications associate at Public Relations Society of America, one reason could be having to deal with personal hardships. Those setbacks and adversities can serve as a blessing in disguise in the corporate world, enabling a professional to act instead of react, with a level head.

“When you got through a lot in your life—whether you grow up in a single parent household, or don’t have access to financial resources, or having dealt with a lot of loss—going through all of that allows you to know who you are,” he said.

“And moving forward in a career like PR where it’s very turbulent at times, it allows you to stay calm. You become a more measured person and a more capable person in times of emergency.”

Find a mentor

This age-old advice never goes out of style—and applies to every sector.

“Most recognize that mentorship is valuable throughout your career. However, it’s natural to look to others who are just like us or have similar backgrounds and interests to serve as a mentor,” Smith says, challenging young and mid-level professionals to step outside of their circle and engage people who can offer a variety of perspectives.

“Also, identifying multiple mentors who can offer guidance and insights on a variety of areas are helpful when figuring out the next step in your career or life. I have mentors who provide career guidance, life tips, financial recommendations, and more,” she added.

Thompson noted that a big part of mentorship is having the courage to reach out in the first place.

“A lot of times you may think ‘Who am I to take up their time,’ but I think it’s something you have to realize we all feel and it’s something we have to go through,” he said.

“If you want that wealth of advice they have, you have to ask them for a cup of coffee or a 15-minute phone call. It’s a scary thing but it’s something that you have to overcome if you want to get to the next level.”

Patton Oswalt and Meredith Salenger Have a Very Public First ‘Fight,’ and Twitter Loves It

Patton Oswalt and Meredith Salenger have reached another milestone in their developing relationship – their first public fight. And the reparteé is ripe comedic material.

It all started when Oswalt responded to a tweet stand-up comic Max Silvestri posted on July 14 about the funniest joke writers on Twitter being the most “repulsive in person.” Oswalt counted himself in that category, responding with some scatological humor that just went beyond the pale.

Oswalt’s Harvard-educated fiancée did not approve.

“Delete your account,” was the terse command Salenger wrote in response to Oswalt’s lewd comment to a comment. “And disappoint my trolls?!? Never,” Oswalt shot back.

It wasn’t long before the fight escalated, and some online users made the mistake of trying to get in the middle.

“If this is how they flirt, imagine how they fight,” wrote Twitter user Christian Jeffries.

“Imagine the make-up sex! Only don’t, because that’s sort of creepy and I’m sorry I brought it up,” wrote another Twitter user, HoosAGoodKitty, with a scared faced emoji.

Salenger responded with a pounce.

“We haven’t fought yet. and also… we aren’t married yet! So… no sex! Cuz that is sacrilege. @pattonoswalt is very very proper.”

Oswalt later responded to this with “How are you getting a WiFi signal in your Menstruation Hut?”

From there is became a mega-sized beast of a thread, with comments pouring in from everywhere.

The very public fight comes after the comedian and Salenger took to social media to defend their decision to get engaged 15 months after Owalt’s first wife, Michelle McNamara, died suddenly.

The couple had been plagued with nasty comments from online users who were critical of their decision to get married less than a year and a half after Oswalt became a widower. McNamera died in April 2016 due to prescription medications and an undiagnosed heart condition that caused arterial blockages — a condition that Oswalt said he and McNamara did not know about when she was alive. The couple got married in 2005, and have a daughter, Alice Rigney. Alice was 8 when her mother passed away.

Burt Reynolds, 81, Makes Rare Public Appearance While Promoting New Film

Burt Reynolds made a rare public appearance on Saturday when he attended the premiere of his new film, Dog Years, at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

The 81-year-old actor struggled to walk when he worked the red carpet, at one point needing to be given a chair while being interviewed by a group of reporters and taking photos with the cast.

Reynolds was joined on the carpet by his Dog Years costar Chevy Chase, whose shirt was for some reason drenched in water, and Robert De Niro, who started the film festival.

“Great to see Mr. De Niro, who I love, and … you know, all the people that I know,” Reynolds told the Associated Press at the event. “It’s very sweet.”

Reynolds’ costar Ariel Winter was also at the event, where she spoke to reporters about being viewed as a role model for young girls. Nikki Blonsky and Clark Duke also star in the film.

Travel And Tourism Public Relations: An Introductory Guide For Hospitality Managers

Travel And Tourism Public Relations: An Introductory Guide For Hospitality Managers

The opening chapter explains the recent growth of industry PR, and travel & tourism news coverage which today focuses on the considerable economic benefits of the industry. Additionally, it reviews the leading news media that covers the industry, the primary PR tools and audiences, and details the factors leading to PR''s new prominence across the industry. It also provides informative sidebars with lists of key industry print media, top travel agencies, plus a Travel Industry Association of America case study of a post-9/11/2001 campaign to restore American confidence in travelling. It also includes a composite definition of PR, and tells how PR is a discipline distinctively different from publicity, propaganda, advertising, and marketing. The author notes how, over the past decade due to economic conditions, PR in many cases has been integrated with marketing communications and played an important role in both strategic and tactical marketing activities.Following this overview, the ensuing five chapters examine communications model specifics that are of special importance to the industry''s major sectors: hotels/lodging establishments; restaurants; tourist attractions/destinations; and transportation services. Each of these sectors have their ownspecial messages, PR tools, and audiences. For example, meeting planners and travel agents are of most importance to hotels, while travel agents are of little importance to airlines and restaurants. Also included is a chapter about what travel employers should understand about PRThe chapters will be followed by appendices that will include:The top 30 U.S. Travel & Tourism Professional/Trade Associations; and the Leading U.S. Travel & Tourism Universities.

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

This book is the first of its kind to bring together a collection of critical scholarly work on consumer culture in South Africa, exploring the cultural, political, economic, and social aspects of consumption in post-Apartheid society. From sushi and Japanese diplomacy to Queen Sophie''s writhing gown, from middle class Sowetan golfers to an indebted working class citizenry, from wedding websites to wedding nostalgia, from the liberation of consuming to the low wage labour of selling, the chapters in this book demonstrate a variety of themes, showing that to start with consumption, rather than ending with it, allows for new insights into long-standing areas of social research. By mapping, exploring and theorizing the diverse aspects of consumption and consumer culture, the volume collectively works towards a fresh set of empirically rooted conceptual commentaries on the politics, economics, and social dynamics of modern South Africa. This effort, in turn, can serve as a foundation for thinking less parochially about neoliberal power and consumer culture. On a global scale, studying consumption in South Africa matters because in some ways the country serves as a microcosm for global patterns of income inequality, race-based economic oppression, and hopes for the material betterment of life. By exploring what consumption means on the ''local'' scale in South Africa, the possibility arises to trace new global links and dissonances. This book was originally published as a special issue ofCritical Arts.

Negotiating the Mediated City: Everyday Encounters with Public Screens

Negotiating the Mediated City: Everyday Encounters with Public Screens

This book is an interdisciplinary empirical investigation of how people interact with public screens in their daily lives. In more and more surprising locations, screens of various kinds appear within the sightlines of passers-by in contemporary cities. Outdoor advertisers target audiences which are increasingly mobile, public art uses screens to interrogate urban change, while postmodern architecture finds electronic imagery a suitable tool of expression. Traditionally, urban sociology research has assumed that people seek to filter urban stimuli, but recent accounts of public screens suggest producers design and position display interfaces site-specifically, so as to engage with those moving past. This study offers insight both into the dynamics of actual encounters and into the long-term process of how people learn to live with repeated invitations to consume media in public spaces. The book includes four cases: street advertising, underground transport advertising, and installation art in London (UK) and media facade architecture in Zadar (Croatia). Krajina shows that maintaining familiarity with everyday surroundings in media cities that change beyond citizens’ control is a temporary achievement–and a recursive struggle.

Circumcision, Public Health, Genital Autonomy and Cultural Rights

Circumcision, Public Health, Genital Autonomy and Cultural Rights

Circumcision is one of the oldest and most common surgical processes, being practised, for a range of medical, social and religious reasons, on up to 30% of males worldwide. It is currently being promoted by a range of health bodies as a means of tackling HIV in developing countries. Yet, there is significant concern about sexual, physiological and psychological effects and complications and its prophylactic effectiveness. In examining a case in which a failed circumcision was performed for religious reasons, the Regional Court in Cologne decided that the practice contravened the bodily autonomy of minors and was subject to the same legislation used to classify female genital cutting as assault. This, understandably, aroused serious concerns among various religious communities who practise circumcision. At the same time as religious groups seek to protect circumcision from comparisons with female genital cutting, there is a trend, particularly in post-colonial thought in the US, to revise negative understandings of female genital cutting by making cautious, positive comparisons with circumcision. This collection considers the apparent contradictions and complications of the contemporary status and deployment of the many forms of genital cutting, raising a serious, wide-reaching question: what scope should society have to impose physically invasive rites on people? This book was originally published as a special issue of “Global Discourse.”
