Elon Musk’s kid-sized submarine was of no use in Thai cave rescue

Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk built a special kid-sized submarine that simply wasn’t practical for the Thailand cave rescue, authorities said on Tuesday. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO showed off the small metallic pod on Twitter over the weekend as it was tested by his engineers in a Los Angeles high school swimming pool —…

Two weeks after the fall of Saigon, on May 12, 1975, Khmer Rouge soldiers on patrol boats fired a rocket-propelled grenade across the bow of the U.S. merchant ship SS Mayaguez.

The United States didn’t recognize the Khmer Rouge’s claim of 12 nautical miles of territorial waters. When the more than 10,000-ton container ship sailed too close to Poulo Wai island on its way from Saigon to Sattahip, Thailand, the patrol boats scrambled to chase it.

Elon Musk is building a ‘kid-size submarine’ to rescue Thai kids trapped in cave

TwitterFacebook

Elon Musk is coming to the rescue.

The tech leader, along with SpaceX and Boring Company engineers, have been working with cave experts in Thailand to rescue the boys’ soccer team of 12 that’s been stuck in a cave system since June 23.

On Saturday, Musk tweeted an updated rescue plan, which essentially involves constructing “a tiny, kid-size submarine” that he plans to fly to Thailand.

Musk began his Saturday updates by discussing an “escape pod design” and “an inflatable tube with airlocks.” But as the day progressed, he settled on the idea of a mini-submarine. Read more…

Thai Boys Trapped In Cave Found Alive But Face Difficult Rescue

(Tham Luang Rescue Operation Center via AP)

MAE SAI, Thailand (AP) — Heavy rains forecast for northern Thailand could worsen flooding in a cave where 12 boys and their soccer coach are waiting to be extracted by rescuers, possibly forcing authorities to have them swim out through a narrow, underwater passage in the cavern, a top official said Tuesday.

The 13, who disappeared when flooding trapped them in the cave they were exploring on June 23 after a soccer game, were found by rescue divers late Monday night in the cavern in northern Chiang Rai province during a desperate search. The effort drew international help and has riveted Thailand.

The boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach were described as healthy and being looked after by seven members of the Thai navy SEALs, including medics, who were staying with them inside the cave. They were mostly in stable condition and have received high-protein drinks.

While efforts to pump out floodwaters are continuing, it’s clear that some areas of the sprawling cavern cannot be drained, said Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda, a member of Thailand’s ruling military junta. In order to get them out ahead of the bad weather forecast for later in the week, they might need to use diving gear while being guided by professional divers, he said.

Anupong said the boys would be brought out via the same complicated route through which their rescuers entered, and he conceded that if something went awry, it could be disastrous.

“Diving is not easy. For people who have never done it, it will be difficult, unlike diving in a swimming pool, because the cave’s features have small channels,” he said. “If something happens midway, it could be life-threatening.”

Video released by the Thai navy showed the boys in their soccer uniforms sitting in a dry area inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave above the water as a light held by a rescuer was shone on their faces.

Cave rescue experts have said it could be safer to simply supply them where they are for now, rather than trying to have the boys dive out. That could take months, however, given that Thailand’s rainy season typically lasts through October.

SEAL commander Rear Adm. Arpakorn Yookongkaew said there was no rush to bring them out, since they’re safe where they are.

A doctor and a nurse were with them in the cave.

“We have given the boys food, starting from easily digested and high-powered food with enough minerals,” Arpakorn told a news conference.

Having them dive out of the cave was one of several options being considered, “but if we are using this plan, we have to be certain that it will work and have to have a drill to make sure that it’s 100 percent safe,” he said.

Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said the health of the boys and coach were checked using a field assessment in which red is critical condition, yellow is serious and green is stable.

“We found that most of the boys are in green condition,” he said. “Maybe some of the boys have injuries or light injuries and would be categorized as yellow condition. But no one is in red condition.”

Relatives keeping vigil at the mouth of the cave since the ordeal began rejoiced at the news that their boys and their coach had been found.

“I want to give him a hug. I miss him very much,” said Tham Chanthawong, an aunt of the coach. “In these 10 days, how many million seconds have there been? I’ve missed him every second.”

Rescue divers had spent much of Monday making preparations for a final push to locate them, efforts that had been hampered by flooding that made it difficult to move through the tight passageways of muddy water.

Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, two expert cave divers from Britain, found the group about 300-400 meters (yards) past a section of the cave on higher ground that was believed to be where they might have taken shelter.

In the 5-minute navy video, the boys were seen wearing their soccer uniforms and were calm, curious and polite. They also were keen to get some food.

After an initial exchange in which a rescuer determines that all 13 are present, one of the boys asked what day it was, and a rescuer replied: “Monday. Monday. You have been here — 10 days.”

The rescuer told them “you are very strong.” The traditional reserve of Thai children toward adults broke slightly after a while, and one boy told another in Thai, “Tell them we are hungry.”

“We haven’t eaten,” a boy said in Thai, then in English: “We have to eat, eat, eat!”

A rescuer assured them that “navy SEALs will come tomorrow, with food and doctors and everything.” At the end of the video, a boy asked in English, “Where do you come from?” The rescue diver replied, “England, UK.”

Besides the protein drink, Narongsak said they were given painkillers and antibiotics, which doctors had advised as a precaution.

He said officials had met and agreed on the need to “ensure 100 percent safety for the boys when we bring them out.”

“We worked so hard to find them and we will not lose them,” he said.

Cave diver Ben Reymenants, part of the team assisting the rescue effort, told NBC’s “Today” show that he was “very surprised obviously that they are all alive and actually mentally also healthy.”

While they appear responsive, “they are very weak and very skinny,” he added.

Reymenants said the easiest option would be to “keep pumping the water out of the cave. They need another 3 or 4 feet so they can literally float them out with life jackets.”

“But time is not on their side,” he noted, because of the heavy rain forecast.

He added that two Thai navy doctors have volunteered to stay with them for months, if needed.

The British Cave Rescue Council, which has members taking part in the operation , said in a statement that “although water levels have dropped, the diving conditions remain difficult and any attempt to dive the boys and their coach out will not be taken lightly because there are significant technical challenges and risks to consider.”

Joining the British are other experts from around the world and teams from the U.S., Australia, China and elsewhere.

Authorities said efforts would continue outside the cave, where teams have been scouring the mountainside for other entrances to the caverns. Several fissures have been found and teams have explored some, although so far, none lead to the trapped boys.

The 11-year-old poodle escaped euthanasia and was rescued, and later adopted by her new family. She now lives quite the exciting life, and has more than 10,000 followers on Instagram in an account she shares with her adopted rescued sister, Happy Yogi.

Yogi was rescued by Wendy’s family nearly five years ago when Yogi’s owner left her at a shelter after having her for a decade. “Happy GOTCHA Day to my Sweet Sister Yogi! 💕🐶💕 4 YRS AGO, mommy was in tears for hours over this photo posting at a high kill shelter,” the family wrote on Instagram on behalf of Wendy in June 2017. “There was a video that went viral of Yogi’s owner dumping her at shelter after having her for 10-11 yrs. Yogi’s face was so happy and then it turned into confusion and sadness. The next day, Mommy drove over 4 hrs to the shelter to rescue Yogi from being put to sleep. At first mommy was angry at her owner but now she knows it was a blessing in disguise. I got a new senior sister who loves belly rubs, cuddling, sunbathing and treats!”

Though Wendy always looks happy, especially with her sister, the little black pooch has her own health troubles. She suffers from a slipped disc in her back, which requires her to use a doggy wheelchair to get around since she can’t use her rear legs.

The pooch doesn’t let her disability hold her back. She’s often running around, swimming, playing with her toys and her fellow furry friends in the videos shared on social media. The Instagram star is also quite stylish, usually wearing cute outfits and colorful sunglasses in her adorable photos. And like any popular pooch, she’s got a cute gang of furry friends, including, Blossom, Olive and fellow Instagram sensation, Maxx Mercedes.

One of Wendy and Yogi’s owners is a firefighter in California, and they often give him shoutouts on Instagram to thank him for the work that he does to help other people in need. The pair of pooches stopped by the firehouse in September 2017 for a quick visit with their human dad. “Me and my sister Yogi surprised daddy 👩🏼‍🚒 at the fire station today! 🚒🔥🚒🔥,” the family captioned a video of their sweet dogs. “He’s been working a lot and we know he misses us so we decided to swing by to say hi and smell stuff.”

The family visited the National September 11 Memorial in New York City in September 2016 and wrote a sweet message for their dad and other firefighters: “At the 9/11 Memorial 🇺🇸… Thank you daddy and all the firefighters out there who help people and animals like me everyday! We ❤ you.”

Wendy first joined Instagram in May 2016, and quickly gained the attention of dog lovers everywhere. Watch the clip above to see Happy Wendy Girl in action.

Lisa Vanderpump Is Looking for Homes for Two Rescue Dogs

Looking for a home! Lisa Vanderpump is on a mission to find forever homes for two adorable dogs, Mopsy and Lisa, whom she and her Vanderpump Dog Foundation recently rescued from terrible conditions.

Vanderpump, 57, shared an Instagram clip on Friday, April 20, to tell the story about what the sweet pooches had endured under the care of their previous owners. “Meet Mopsy & Lisa, two of our newest rescues! They came from horrific conditions and suffered serious neglect,” she captioned the video. “Nevertheless it didn’t break their spirits! They are now at the @VanderpumpDogs Rescue Center – clean, happy and patiently awaiting their forever homes! Stop by and meet them today! 💕🐶.”

The video described the pooches’ living conditions, saying that they had been surviving on occasional food from the neighbors, were living outside surrounded by their own waste, and had severe sores and injuries from being neglected. They were brought in to The Vanderpump Dog Center and properly cared for and are now ready to be adopted. “These precious pups have been through a lot, and yet are still so joyous and happy… all that’s missing is you!! Come visit them and give them their fur-ever home they so greatly deserve! 💕🐶,” the Vanderpump Dogs Instagram page captioned the same video.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star recently revealed that she adopted another dog named Binky Boo, who also had a rough start in her life. “Binky spent first 7 months in a tiny cage, moving was impossible, sad dog, but now a bouncing bear at Villa Rosa,” she tweeted on Wednesday, April 18. She also shared a photo on Instagram from Binky’s debut on the reality show. “Binky Boo surrendered after months of being in a cage where she couldn’t stand up,” she explained. “I said no more dogs after our loss, she was very sad at the rescue so it was agreed she would stay with us for three days. That was then and this now!”

Binky is now the eighth dog who lives in the TV star’s home, and the first one she’s brought in since losing her dog Pikachu in October 2017 and Pink in September 2017. The dog lover attended the premiere of her documentary, The Road to Yulin and Beyond, at the Awareness Film Festival in L.A. in October and spoke to Us Weekly about her loss.

“To even talk about that right now — having lost two of my dogs in just a few days has been unbelievable. At this time, it’s difficult to do it,” she told Us.

“We’re trying to create a humane environment for dogs everywhere,” she said about the film, which draws attention to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and its horrifying practices. “It is important for us to be here, and I thank everybody else for coming out and supporting this short documentary. But it’s been a wonderful year as well because the Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center has already adopted out, I think, 250 dogs from the kill shelters.”

Outdated Tech? 8 Ways to Rescue Your Old Data from Old Devices

The computer revolution is already a few generations old, and in all that time we’ve seen many technologies fall by the wayside as innovative, more efficient devices and file storage solutions moved in to take their place. Today’s computers, cameras, and flash drives with their superior processing power, versatility, and storage capacity have left in their wake a host of obsolete hard drives, memory cards, and cassettes. You’d be hard-pressed to open any files stored on these outdated media on one of today’s devices. But don’t despair: That old data isn’t necessarily lost forever. With a bit of sleuthing and persistence, you can recover files from old formats. Take care, though. If you attempt to recover on your own any data that is truly irreplaceable, such as photos of your child’s first birthday, a long-lost recording of your high school garage band, or videotaped messages from your wedding guests, you could unwittingly damage or destroy it beyond hope of retrieval. For your most precious and prized mementos, turn the original storage media over to a reputable professional restoration service.

Oprah To The Rescue: CBS Is Begging Her To Fill In On ‘CBS This Morning’

Who wouldn’t want Oprah on their network, let alone doing a show for them! It’d be a pretty great experience for all parties involved.

However, the need is dire in the case of CBS. Page Six reports that the company is begging Oprah to fill in the spot of Charlie Rose on their morning show “CBS This Morning.”

Alongside her best friend Gayle King and co-host Norah O’Donnell, Oprah would fill the void and provide a distraction from Charlie Rose and his sexual harassment allegations to which he admitted to.

A TV insider told Page Six, “They are begging Oprah to fill in. Not full time…But they are hoping she’ll do one day, two days, one hour, fill in ’til Christmas. Anything.”

There have been reports that CBS was looking to rotate co-host from the talent that they already have. However, compared to their competitors like ABC and NBC news, they don’t possess the same amount of well-known stars.

It just so happened that Oprah joined CBS when she became a part of the “60 Minutes” team in September producing a series of shows. CBS had previously tried for 5 years to get Winfrey to work with them. An insider commented, “Unless you get a superstar (on the show), it’s always going to be. ‘Charlie’s missing.’”

It seems that CBS is scrambling to get a host and would really love it if Oprah can fill in for them in the wake of Charlie Rose’s ordeal.

In Mexico, a race against time to rescue earthquake survivors from the rubble

JUDY WOODRUFF: Grasping for a sliver of hope. A life-and-death drama played out today, two days after a 7.1 earthquake struck Mexico City and the surrounding region. The death toll stood at 245, with more than 2,000 hurt.

Our William Brangham is there, and filed this report.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: From dusk to dawn, and all through the day, they dug, trying to reach what they thought was a young girl trapped in the ruins of a collapsed school. The tale of the girl called Frida Sofia has gripped the country since early yesterday, when rescuers first heard her voice coming out of the wreckage.

RODOLFO RUVALCAVA (through interpreter): Yes, she told me her name. Apart from just her name, she told us there were two other kids, and that there were other bodies. We don’t know if the others are alive.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Then, at mid-afternoon, word from the Mexican Navy: There is no missing child at the school.

ANGEL ENRIQUE SARMIENTO (through interpreter): We are sure it wasn’t real, because, I repeat, we collaborated with public education, with the delegation and with the school, and all the totality of the children, regrettably, some are deceased. Others, I repeat, are at the hospital, and the rest are safe in their homes.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: At least 26 bodies have been recovered from the school. All but five of them were children. But on the day of the quake, a girl and a boy were pulled alive from the rubble.
A man had called to them to crawl through an opening in the side of the building, and they found their way out. Those small victories gave the rescue crews and volunteers the hope and strength to keep going. The quake hit Tuesday afternoon near the Puebla state town of Raboso, 76 miles southeast of Mexico City.

Since then, officials say more than 50 survivors have been freed in dramatic rescues across the area. Last night in the Del Valle neighborhood of Mexico City, rescuers were met with applause as they carried out a man who’d been trapped in a toppled apartment building. The scene was similar in the La Condesa neighborhood. Hundreds of rescuers searched to find four women believed to be trapped in this rubble, the remains of a seven-story apartment building.

We spoke with one volunteer who arrived just 30 minutes after the quake struck and hasn’t left.

Have you been sleeping at all?

FABIAN COSSIO ORTEGA, Volunteer: Just on the corner of the street, yes. Some people haven’t left. It’s just, we cannot leave, you know? We have to stay.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Throughout the night, the work went on, removing dirt by the bucketful to prevent further collapse.

LEON DEL VALLE DIAZ, Rescuer (through interpreter): I believe people need help, and I would like to think there are still survivors. And, honestly, I have always helped when there have been disasters. My family and I have always helped in some way, either with provisions or by supporting them, like right now with the debris.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: In the center of the city today, rescuers dug through the remains of this textile factory. It’s estimated that about 100 workers, mostly Japanese, were inside when the quake hit.

There’s no official count of actually how many people were inside this building. It’s estimated that about 30-some bodies have already been brought out. But rescue workers here are working frantically because they believe that there is still at least one other people who is alive inside the rubble who has been texting rescue workers on the outside, asking for help.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has declared three days of national mourning. In a televised statement last night, he offered his own condolences.

PRESIDENT ENRIQUE PENA NIETO, Mexico (through interpreter): The whole of Mexican society is with you. We’re with you in your pain. I reiterate to the residents of affected zones that you are not alone. Working together, we are going to make it through.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Nieto said aid is also coming in from Japan, the United States and other countries.

The help cannot come too soon. Several buildings in Mexico City are feared to be near collapse, and officials face the competing demands of trying to save lives, and beginning demolition work to ensure public safety.

For now, though, every single person we have talked to here is determined 100 percent to keep this solely a search-and-rescue mission — Judy.

JUDY WOODRUFF: So, William, you have now been to a couple of these collapsed sites. Tell us what it’s like.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: The overwhelming response here is pretty incredible. There are hundreds of people from all over the country and from other countries as well volunteering their time.

They are taking time off work. They’re coming from all walks of life, and shopkeepers, construction workers. I met a guy who runs a shop. Everyone just feels an incredible pull to come out here and try to do something, anything to help find anyone that might be left in this wreckage.

JUDY WOODRUFF: And how are these rescuers holding up themselves? This can be very emotional.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: It can be emotional. There are enormous false starts that happen all the time.

People get their hopes up, they hear a rumor, the crowd is suddenly silenced because they’re told that there’s a sound that’s come out of one of the rubble piles, everyone gets silent immediately. It’s an incredible sight to see, where hundreds of people who have been working in very chaotic circumstances get this upraised fist signal to be quiet, and they all do.

So, the fact is, though, most of the places we have been to, they have only been just that, false alarms. We haven’t seen anyone come out of the wreckage alive in over a day.

One of the great disappointments here, of course, has been the news that the girl that was thought to be inside this collapsed school may have turned out to simply be just hope or a rumor or wishful thinking. There are recriminations now afterwards on social media. Everyone is now blaming one of the big television stations here for feeling like this story got hyped, and so there is a lot of disappointment there.

But, still, people are eager and hopeful that they still might find survivors somewhere in this country.

JUDY WOODRUFF: That’s so tough.

And, William, is it your sense that the teams who are doing the rescuing have the supplies they need?

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: They absolutely do.

In fact, there is — again, characteristic of the response here in Mexico City, volunteers have been overwhelmingly donating food, water, medical supplies, masks, goggles. I mean, we have heard from several people that they don’t need any more of that. They are more than well taken care of here.

JUDY WOODRUFF: All right, William Brangham reporting for us from Mexico City, where they’re still dealing with this terrible earthquake, thank you, William.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: You’re welcome, Judy.

JUDY WOODRUFF: And just moments ago, Mexico’s president confirmed that the death toll from the earthquake has now risen to 273.

Two Veterinarians Got Married And Had Rescue Kittens At Their Wedding

Michele Bangsboll and Nick Anderson’s wedding day was absolutely purr-fect.

The couple, who are both veterinarians and cat lovers, had two very special feline wedding guests by the names of Jeeves and Houdini at their March 25 nuptials at Spruce Mountain Ranch in Larkspur, Colorado.

Both kitties are rescues from Divine Feline in Denver, Colorado, where the couple volunteers in their free time.

“We thought of the idea to help promote our volunteer organization by featuring some adorable adoptable kittens in our wedding photos,” the bride told The Huffington Post. “Nick and I have always adored cats, which is why we decided to volunteer with the Divine Feline and have them be a part of our special day.”

The couple posed with the kitties during their bridal portrait session after the ceremony. And can we just say that they are exceedingly photogenic?

Only the bride and groom knew about the fur-tastic surprise.

“Everyone in the bridal party was freezing since we had been standing outside without jackets for a while and we told them all to wait for one more surprise and then we brought out the kittens,” Michele told HuffPost. “I think everyone’s voice jumped up an octave when they saw the cuteness overload and no one cared about being cold anymore. One of the groomsmen was even reluctant to go back inside when we were done with group photos because he wanted to hold them!”

Jeeves and Houdini will be looking for forever homes in a few weeks, once they are big enough to be neutered.

The couple also incorporated their love of animals into their cake toppers:

Their table names:

And even their shoes.

Michele and Nick first met in 2011 during their first semester of veterinary school at St. Matthew’s University on Grand Cayman Island. While they were there, they adopted two cats named Bam-Bam and Wiggles from a local shelter.

JetSpeed fairway woods and Rescue clubs each incorporate a radically redesigned Speed Pocket that’s smaller and accounts for less weight while remaining just as efficient at boosting the speed of the clubface. Think of it as an afterburner for your ball. Unlike the Speed Pockets in our previous fairways and Rescues, which were empty, JetSpeed’s is filled with polymer to keep debris out and absorb unwanted vibration without slowing down the clubface. The weight saved by the new Speed Pocket design is redistributed strategically within the clubhead to move the CG lower and forward, the location that TaylorMade has proven promotes fast ball speed and low spin. TaylorMade’s robot testing indicates that JetSpeed fairways and Rescue clubs reduce spin compared to RBZ Stage 2 to promote more distance. JetSpeed fairways reduce spin by 200-300 RPM compared to RBZ Stage 2 to promote more distance. The redesigned Speed Pocket also allowed TaylorMade engineers to make t

Promising Care: How We Can Rescue Health Care by Improving It

Promising Care: How We Can Rescue Health Care by Improving It

Promising Care: How We Can Rescue Health Care by Improving It collects 16 speeches given over a period of 10 years by Donald M. Berwick, an internationally acclaimed champion of health care improvement throughout the course of his long and storied career as a physician, health care educator and policy expert, leader of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. These landmark speeches (including all of Berwick’s speeches delivered at IHI’s annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care from 2003 to 2012) clearly show why our medical systems don’t reliably contribute to our overall health. As a remedy he offers a vision for making our systems better – safer, more effective, more efficient, and more humane. Each of Berwick’s compelling speeches is preceded by a brief commentary by a prominent figure in health care, policy, or politics who has a unique connection to that particular speech. Contributors include such notables as Tom Daschle, Paul Batalden, and Lord Nigel Crisp. Their commentaries reflect on how it felt to hear the speech in the context in which it was delivered, and assess its relevance in today’s health care environment. The introduction is by Maureen Bisognano, CEO of Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and author of Pursuing the Triple Aim. “Praise for previous books by Don Berwick” “Curing Health Care: “”””The book is an easy and affirming read for anyone who is familiar with and has used the TQM teachings of Dr. Joseph M. Juran and Dr. W. Edwards Deming and would be a simple and informative introduction to the concepts for anyone who has been hearing about TQM but has no idea what it is all about and wants to know more.” –“Permanent Fixes (blog)””””Donald Berwick is the most clearly heard evangelist of applying industrial methods of continuous quality improvement in health care.”–“Annals of Internal” Medicine”Escape Fire: “”” “With an effective blend of common
