1 mom, 4 kids: How to survive a 7-hour car ride

by

Sabrina Garibian

posted in Products

Want to know my number one tip on how to survive a 7 hour car ride with four small kids? Do it alone.

I mean it! Does that make me sound like a mean wife? I know it sounds absolutely crazy but my husband and I are happiest on trips to visit my family when I drive our four kids myself and he meets us by train a day or two later. I spend the whole car ride focused on the kids, listening to pop music, kids’ music, or a Disney DVD. The kids are happy and don’t whine because the music entertains them and I’m paying attention to them.

I load up the passenger seat with their activities so I can pass them back as needed. I stop for a full hour halfway way there for everyone to eat a good meal, use the restroom, and stretch their legs. My husband is happy because he can work a few extra hours on the train and shows up at our destination ready to relax.

If we all drive together it never seems to go well. My hubby is so focused on “making good time” that he doesn’t want to stop for an extended break and is constantly looking at the map to decide which route to take for the quickest way to our destination. We ignore the kids as we get wrapped up in front seat conversation, and we always listen to CNN. We don’t mean it, but the ride stinks for our kids when we ride together and everyone ends up whining or feeling cranky.

I love my husband so much but long car rides with the kids are for me to take alone!

Anyway, now that I’ve let you in on the details of my life, let me share some tips for surviving a long car ride with small children. I do it often enough that I feel like I’ve become an expert. Keep in mind that as a rule we do not allow food in our car so you won’t find snacks in our car. Yes, even for a 7 hour car ride.

How to survive a 7-hour car ride with small children:

7 hour car ride

  1. Think of the car ride as part of your trip and not just as a way to get where you’re going. We blast the music, play I Spy, and practice learning the lyrics to our favorite pop tunes.
  2. Save the electronics for the last fourth of your trip. Our general rule is no electronics until we’ve been in the car at least four hours. After the four hour mark all bets are off and I’ll play a movie on the DVD player or let my children use their tablets. If we let them use the tablets from the start, the car ride feels like it lasts forever.
  3. Stop at a restaurant or market instead of a rest stop. I treat our car ride break like we’re going out for a real meal. We time it around lunch or dinner and usually stop at a Shake Shack five minutes off the highway. We eat a really good meal, everyone stretches their legs and uses the bathroom, and we’re ready to continue our ride. It takes us an hour, but it allows us to get back in the car feeling refreshed.
  4. Bring activities for your kids to do. I pack pencils and notebooks so the kids can draw or write. My son usually brings a little Lego man, and my daughters bring dolls and a book to play with on the car ride. Bonus: the books can double as bedtime books on your trip.
  5. Don’t forget a wet bag! Wet bags are so useful, but on a car trip they become a necessity if someone spills a drink or gets sick in the car. I keep one in the glove compartment in case we need to store wet clothes or blankets until we can wash them at our destination.
  6. Let your children pack their own backpacks. I used to pack each child a blanket, stuffed animal, toy, and book for our long car rides. Now I let them pack their own! I noticed when they packed their own they tended to play and use those items more. It’s risky business with little ones, but try it! On our last trip my 2-year-old packed 4 pairs of socks, a book about socks, and a Curious George stuffed animal. Would you believe she spent the whole car ride putting socks on the stuffed animal and taking them off?
  7. Chill out. Staying relaxed and taking each moment for what it is truly helps on a long car ride. I have so many crazy stories about our car rides, from the time my son threw up for two straight hours but I was stuck on the GW bridge and couldn’t pull over, to the time one of my girls had to use the bathroom and couldn’t wait for a rest stop so we pulled over on the highway (don’t judge me!), to the time we left in shorts and drove through a surprise April snowstorm that doubled our travel time. If you stay relaxed, your children will too!

Traveling with kids isn’t always easy, but by keeping a positive attitude and being prepared, you will all have a blast. Happy travels!

What’s your best tip for traveling with children?

Official Reveals the Cause of Deadly Ohio State Fair Ride Accident That Killed Teen

The manufacturer of an Ohio amusement park ride that broke apart, leading to the death of an 18-year-old last month, was caused by “excessive corrosion,” an official reportedly said.

Tyler Jarrell was killed and several more people were injured at the Ohio State Fair when the Fire Ball ride spun out of control, sending people flying through the air. Now, an official with the ride’s Dutch manufacturer says the ride was nearly 20-years-old, resulting in the “catastrophic failure,” CNN reports.

Albert Kroon, with KMG International, said in a statement that investigators have determined that “excessive corrosion on the interior of the gondola support beam dangerously reduced the beam’s wall thickness over the years,” according to CNN.

Kroon added that the company is working with safety experts to “develop an inspection protocol” to prevent future accidents.

The incident occurred at around 7:20 p.m. on July 26. Video footage of the malfunction showed the showed a large part of the structure flying into the air as bystanders screamed.

“We heard commotion on the ride. There was people on the ride like, ‘slow it down, it’s too fast,’ ” one witness, Julian Bellinger, told Good Morning America of the Fire Ball ride at the Columbus fair. “When I the people fall out, I just turned my head and I couldn’t watch it.”

Jarrell, of Columbus, died at the scene. In the wake of the incident, many who knew the teen told PEOPLE that he was heading into his senior year of school and had recently enlisted in the U.S. Marines.

“He was a very selfless person, he would always put others first,” Dillon Evans told PEOPLE of his friend.

“He loved to serve his community, so he wanted to serve his country. He was always doing things for people. He was ready to serve his country in all ways possible.”

Reporter’s Reaction To ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Ride Is A Joy To Behold

Cory James will likely think twice about broadcasting live from a theme park ride again.

The news reporter for ABC30 gave viewers a preview of the revamped “Guardians of the Galaxy”-themed ride at Disney’s California Adventure Park on Friday.

But it’s his terrified reaction to the experience that’s now going viral.

Hilarious video shows him screaming as the elevator-style ride goes up and down. Making it funnier still is the composed nature of his fellow passengers, who appear totally tranquil in comparison.

“This was not a good idea,” says James once the ride, which opened Saturday, has “thankfully” ended.

He later lightheartedly tweeted about the ordeal being “traumatic.”

Man Proposes To Girlfriend On Romantic Plane Ride, Immediately Throws Up

When Darrell Hamilton Jr., decided to propose to his girlfriend, Rheanna Lopez, he wanted it to be memorable.

Well, it was, but not in the way he intended, expected or, frankly, wanted.

Last month, Hamilton took Lopez on a plane ride of the Blossom Trail, an area near Fresno, California, where fruit trees start blossoming in late February.

Hamilton, a video editor for KFSN TV, has been dating Lopez for two years and knew he wanted to marry her since last year.

“I planned it for so long,” he told Inside Edition.

But he never planned on getting motion sickness during the flight.

“The only thing was really on my mind was wanting to get it over with,” he said.

The video shows Hamilton showing Lopez the ring and “Will you marry me?”

Seconds later, he vomits on the floor.

“I just went into help mode,” Lopez said. “I didn’t know how to react. I was in shock.”

Hamilton admits his girlfriend had trouble getting her own bearings ― emotionally, that is.

“She was really surprised,” he told the New York Post. “She was caught off guard and had mixed emotions because I started throwing up. She didn’t know what to do. She was concerned about me.”

Lopez finally decided to pat him tenderly on the back while handing him a sweater to wipe his face.

Oh, and she did say yes.

Under the circumstances, their first kiss as an engaged couple wasn’t a lip-smacking smooch fest. Instead, they each kissed their fingers and touched them together.

Since the proposal was such as a challenge, it’s understandable they haven’t made wedding plans yet.

Still, Hamilton is already planning his life with Lopez.

“I have a son from a previous relationship and me and Rheanna don’t have any kids together,” Hamilton told ABC News. “So maybe starting a family with a child of our own and being a role model for the both of them, and for her.”

How To Ride the Motivation Wave and Overcome Distraction By, Daniel DiPiazza

For 20 years, filmmaker Sooyong Park has devoted his life to the study, recording and preservation of the wild Siberian tiger. 2-3 times a year, he leaves his family for months at a time to stay in the frozen forests of Eastern Russia, Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula in hopes of catching a glimpse of the great cats.

To withstand temperatures of -30*C, he builds himself an underground igloo, reinforced with sticks. To sustain himself, he packs hundreds of tiny rations of nuts and seeds in plastic wrap. When he’s thirsty, he drinks the snow.

Then, he takes out his camera and waits.

Sometimes days. Sometimes weeks. Sometimes months — waiting for the tigers to show up. And even when they do show up, he’s not allowed to show his excitement. He has to be absolutely focused in hopes of getting one, fleeting picture without scaring them away (or getting himself killed).

And because of Sooyong’s unconventional ability to focus on his work with tigers, the world has gotten some of the rarest footage ever captured of tiger behavior in the wild. Among his best finds, Park has captured some of the only footage of tigers giving birth in the wild, playing with each other at various ages, and doing other incredible things that nobody in the world has been able to record.

After watching a documentary about him, I immediately started thinking about what it must be like to focus on one thing so intensely for such a long period of time. It blew my mind.

Imagine being alone in that igloo, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No updates on social, no contact, no toilet.

“Day 47, still waiting on tigers. Anyone else up? Lol!”

The funny thing is, it’s a GOOD thing he was so isolated out there.

Having contact with the outside world and constantly being wrapped up in the flow of daily gossip soundbites would have robbed him of the chance to actually focus on what he came there to see. And the same thing is happening to you and I every single day.

Focus in today’s world is harder than ever.

Unlike Sooyong Park, most of our jobs don’t require us to be out in nature for extended periods of time — so it’s much harder to escape the social media tractor beam. Most people can’t even complete a single task from beginning to end. It’s no surprise, really. Just take a look at your environment. The way that our culture and society is set up is not conducive itself to maintaining discipline or focus — partly because we’ve made ourselves increasingly available to outside intrusion

A few decades ago, there were just a handful of ways to contact each other: snail mail, home telephone or in person. That was it. Fast forward to today, and there is an almost infinite amount of ways to “check in” on somebody that you want to talk to.

On my phone alone I have:

  1. apple imessage app (for personal texts)
  2. Facebook messenger (for fb direct messages)
  3. Facebook app (for comments and updates)
  4. Twitter app
  5. Facebook Mentions (for fan page messages/updates)
  6. Whatsapp (international texts and calls)
  7. snapchat (for nudes??)
  8. Instagram (can receive DMs)
  9. Skype (for group calls and international video chat)
  10. GroupMe (I use it for social media interest groups)
  11. Kik (strictly for communicating with Instagram partners)
  12. Gmail (email)

That’s 12 different ways to get in touch with me at any given moment! (Not including making an actual phone call! That, my friends, is DESIGNED distraction.)

Everything in our lives is brilliantly designed to make us keep coming back for more..while getting less and less done. It’s almost impossible to avoid. This isn’t an excuse to fall into the Candy Crush oblivion and never return…but it’s just a fact. The technology you use every single day is designed to drain your focus and decrease your attention span.

I’ve said it before, but with so much distraction, uninterrupted focus is a rare superpower these days. One of my friends, also named Daniel, says it this way: “Give the greatest philosophers of ancient history Facebook and I’ll show you all the books they didn’t write.”

Developing focus by creating

Focus is a learned skill, and attention can be developed like a muscle. The more you focus on training this skill, the easier it becomes to “switch on.”

The most common response to lack of focus is attempting to use your will to overpower the distraction. Maybe you even delete annoying apps and pledge to only check your messages every fortnight. These ideas sound good…but we know they never end up working long term.
Eventually, you’ll have to use your apps. And you’re going to want to check your email. Being focused isn’t about cultivating greater willpower or hoping that the world goes back to a “simpler” time.

You’re most likely going to be on social media. This is just part of our new social ecosystem. Get over it. Most of us want to use these tools — so it’s not about eliminating them, it’s about learning how to adapt your lives to them. What you spend your time on is a result of what you do habitually. If you can change your habits, you can increase your ability to focus and change your entire life.

Learn to ride the “Motivation Wave” for as long as possible

Stanford professor B.J. Fogg really digs into the heart of our discussion today and delivers a framework to be productive according to the time of day.

He looks at motivation a bit differently than most. According to Fogg, motivation is a wave with peaks and valleys — and the goal isn’t to stay at a constant peak — but rather, to recognize the valleys and adjust your effort accordingly.

According to Fogg, it’s not realistic to expect focused attention from yourself at all times. Instead, the key is to become more aware of your daily (or even hourly) fluctuations in motivation — and do the hardest things in your day when you’re feeling the best.

For example, you might use this approach to “trick” yourself into working out every morning.
You know that when you get up in the morning and you’ve just had your first meal, your willpower is at the highest point it will be all day. You haven’t checked your email yet or jumped into the maelstrom that is social media.

If you hurry up and get to the gym, you can take full advantage of the natural motivation wave that hits you first thing in the morning — and if you ride it carefully, you can surf those feelings of optimism into the early afternoon by maintaining your energy until 12 or 1pm.

In anticipation of this wave, you’ll stack all your hardest work between 10am and 1pm. All the calls you don’t want to make. All the tedious emails you don’t want to answer and all the boring work you have to plow through. You need to do them when you’re at your peak state.

You already know that if you wait until you’re already feeling the afternoon dip to start force feeding yourself the most dreaded tasks, you’ll never get them done.

Do what you can when you’re feeling good, then purposely find easier things to do when your wave is dying down.

I’ve organized my day this way, which is why I wake up at 4:45am and give myself hours of undistracted time to get my hardest projects done before the rest of the world even wakes up!

I can easily say I’ve 10xed my productivity in the past 6 months alone since adopting this new routine.

Mike Tyson Busted His A** Trying To Ride A Hoverboard

Many people were given hoverboards as gifts this holiday season. As a result, a number of incidents of people falling off of them were caught on video. Well, looks like you can add Mike Tyson to that list.

On Tuesday, Tyson posted an Instagram video of him almost cracking his head open in a pretty hard fall.

A video posted by Mike Tyson (@miketyson) on

He posted a caption with the hashtags #MikeTysonBreaksBack and #imtoooldforthisshit.

At first, Tyson looked like he was having fun and had it all under control.

Then it all went terribly wrong.

Cat Takes Accidental Ride On An Airplane (VIDEO)

Meow ready for takeoff.

A cat finds itself on the flight of her life as she clings to the wing of a plane flying over Kourou, French Guiana.

In a video posted on Sunday to YouTube, the pilot, Romain Jantot, and his passenger, don’t notice the cat at first. Then, as she crawls toward them, they realize they’ve taken on an unwanted passenger.

Jantot immediately starts his descent after spotting the feline stowaway and safely lands the plane.

“A standard flight until … I still don’t know if it got in after the pre-flight check or if I missed it,” the video description says. “The cat is doing well, she is still our mascot.”

Sometimes viral video clips turn out to be fakes. But Arizona pilot Stephen Bass told The Huffington Post he thinks this one’s legit.

Bass is the president of the nonprofit Copperstate Fly-In and has more than 500 hours of flying experience, including on light sport aircraft, like the kind shown in the video.

“There’s fabric on the top and the bottom of the wing and space in between,” Bass said. “You see it crawling out from the center of the wing, where it was protected. I think it’s real.”

Jantot did not immediately return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

See the cat’s entire flight below:

Just Ride

Maybe after all these years, my memory is playing tricks on me, but I remember him looking like a brilliant bolt of lightning that carried its own storm inside it. Deep, pitiless eyes and a coat the color of a muzzle flash. I can still see him twitching with an impatient but intelligent rage whenever we tried to saddle him up.

The way I remember him, he was pure terror on four legs. That was, of course, a long time ago, and maybe, in the decades since, I’ve made him out to be more than he was. We do that. We make our adversaries bigger and stronger and more malevolent than they really are because that makes us seem bigger and stronger and nobler than we really are. Our triumphs seem grander that way, our failings, at least excusable.

He was our first horse, a muscular and radiant palomino that we had bought for $ 175 not long after we bought our small farm in the rugged hills of northeastern Pennsylvania. It never occurred to us at the time to wonder why such a beautiful animal would be so cheap. My father, naturally, took it as sign of his superior business acumen. My mother was simply blinded by his beauty. Perhaps inspired by the Western romances she was so fond of – her buckskin bodice rippers, as she called them – or maybe because she harbored a secret passion for Robert Redford, she had given him the cloyingly romantic name of Sundance.

We soon learned why he had been such a bargain. He was a miserable beast. It was, to some degree, understandable. Though he was a gelding, he had been unsexed late enough in life that it did nothing to take the edge off his behavior, but instead left him with a deep-seated and seething hostility focused specifically on the two-legged species that had subjected him to that indignity in the first place. In short, Sundance hated people.

But unlike other horses we had later, Sundance didn’t express his resentment by simply trying to buck you off. No, he was far subtler than that. He would run away with you, heading full-tilt to the nearest low hanging branch, where he would then scrape you off his back as violently as possible.

I was all of about 12 years old at the time. A scrawny, transplanted suburban kid, who didn’t have the foggiest notion of how to handle a mean-spirited beast like that, and it wouldn’t have mattered even if I did. Far better riders than I had tried to best Sundance and just like me, they ended up in a bloody heap at the bottom of a tree trunk.

But my father, who never sat a horse in his life, was insistent. He demanded that I keep trying to beat Sundance into submission and every Sunday afternoon, right after we got back from church, he’d order me into my room to change my clothes, swapping out my Sunday best for the ragged, bloodstained shirt and jeans I had worn the last time I had tried to ride Sundance. Then he would march me out to the field behind the barn where we’d gather up Sundance, saddle him, and brace ourselves for the worst.

This went on for about a year, I suppose, before my father, either out of pity or disgust, finally relented and agreed to sell Sundance. He called up our trader, a guy named Buddy Baldwin, and Buddy showed up the following Sunday with his truck and his wife and partner, a woman who had been graced by fate with the best name imaginable for someone in her line of work: Winnie.

Maybe it was just a boy’s budding machismo, maybe it was just rank stupidity, but when Buddy and Winnie pulled their truck into that field and began preparing to collect Sundance, I asked if I could try just one more time to ride him. Winnie gave Buddy a long, meaningful look, Buddy looked at my father, and my father looked at me and nodded.

I had no reason to think that this time it would be any, and as we saddled him up, that old familiar terror started to churn again in my gut. I hopped on his back and took the reins from Buddy. Sundance pranced a bit and then did it again, breaking into a dead run, heading straight for the apple tree, as I choked back sobs and yanked as hard as I could on the reins begging him to stop.

I’ll never really know where it came from, but just as Sundance and I rounded the barn, something inside me snapped, and I let out a blood-curdling yell from somewhere deep inside me that I had never heard from myself before or since. Almost without realizing I was doing it, I dug my bony teenaged heels into that beast’s flanks, and rather than pull back on the reins, I let them go slack and began whipping him as hard and fast as I could, shouting the whole time, and when he tried to pull up at the apple tree, I wouldn’t let him. I just kept him running. We must have covered a half-mile at a full breakneck gallop, off our property, down across the next farm, and the one after that, where I turned him and headed back.

By the time we reached the field where Buddy and Winnie and my father were waiting, there was nothing left of Sundance but hooves and foam. At the bottom of the hill, I tugged gently on the reins, and Sundance obediently came to a halt. I prodded him forward, pulled back again, and again he stopped. I had beaten him, just as my father had wanted. And then I rode directly to my father, hopped off the horse, handed the reins to Buddy, and said over my shoulder to my father with all the bravado a 13-year-old could muster, “There. Now you can sell the son of a bitch.”

I’m on the cusp of being an old man now and it’s been years since I saddled a horse. I live in a different world. A more complicated one, a world that sometimes looks like a flash of lightning that carries its own storm inside it. More than once, it’s left me bruised and bloody at the base of an old apple tree. But I’ve gotten by because of a lesson I learned on Sundance’s back a long time ago. Sometimes it’s futile to try to resist the forces that want to topple you. Instead, you need to use their raging power against them, hit them with your spurs, let out one hell of a yell and just ride.

Rocky Boots Men’s 4187 Rocky Ride Expansion Fit Cowboy Boots

You don’t have to ride a horse to be a cowboy, you know. If you’ve got a strong work ethic, and the right footwear, you can be a cowboy whenever you like. It’s just much easier when you have these Rocky 4187 Brown 11-Inch Rocky Ride Men’s Western Boots. Distressed embellished shafts, rocker heels and square toes give these Western boots a classic look. The 11-inch design of these Rocky boots is tall and stylish from top to bottom, with finger holes and pull straps that make it easy for you to get into them. Soft leather construction makes them easy to wear. These cowboy boots are embellished with fancy stitching and techniques, but they don’t even need it. Full-grain leather is the only embellishment that really matters to your feet. The material of these Rocky Ride boots is supple and pliant, so flexible it stays that way even in wet and cold conditions. Full-grain can handle being in wet and cold conditions because it’s naturally repellent to moisture, wind, and even wear. A dipped topline finishes off the distinct style of these Expansion boots. The topline is just that, the top (or collar) of the boots. The Expansion Fit seam expands to give you more room as needed, making it easy for you to take your work boots on and off. Once they’re on, you’ll be resting on the softness of Ride footbeds, made with soft EVA foam. Arch stabilizers are built into the footbeds to keep arches lifted and provide support. The shock-absorbing heels in the footbeds take the sting out of steps where you hit the ground the hardest. Tricot lining surrounds steps. The dark brown, knitted material is soft and lightweight to create a luxurious interior for your feet. Your feet need softness and comfort, but they need support as well. That’s why steel shanks are added to keep your arches lifted when you wear these Ride boots. This prevents muscle fatigue and pain. Ride Western outsoles add more support to the design. Made with shock-resistant rubber, the soles are rugged and oil-resistant to stand up to tough corrosive. Repairable Goodyear welt construction is used to attach the soles. The stitching is made with moisture-resistant waxed thread that allows the soles to be replaced as needed.Made with a non-marking, slip-resistant tread, the soles of these Rocky boots keep your steps steady wherever you go. Ride rocker heels add extra lift to give you better support on ladder rungs. The heels complete the classic cowboy look, too. Dura-Red technology keeps the outsoles highly flexible and comfortable. Even cowboys have to protect their feet. Keep yours safe and stylish with Rocky 4187 Brown 11-Inch Rocky Ride Men’s Western Slip-Resistant Boots. Manufactured sizes: Medium: 8-12, 13 | Wide: 8-12, 13

No Pants SkyTrain Ride In Vancouver Shocks, Amuses (PHOTOS)

Over 100 people were literally caught with their pants down as part of the fifth annual No Pants SkyTrain Ride in Vancouver on Sunday.

Larry Piche with Vancouver Improv Anywhere, a flash mob company that organizes the ride every year, said that the 2014 event drew its highest numbers yet, though he didn’t specify how many attended. Last year’s event drew hundreds.

Asked why he would organize such an activity, his answer was simple: “I think that people are looking for a reason to drop their pants.”

Check out images from this year’s No Pants ride. Story continues after the slideshow:

The event originates with New York’s Improv Anywhere, which held the first No Pants Subway Ride in 2002. It has since expanded to cities including Shanghai, Istanbul and Adelaide, Australia.

Participants packed an Expo Line train at Commercial-Broadway station at the start of the ride at around 4 p.m. The doors closed and they immediately set about removing their pants and stuffing them in some bags.

The action drew a mixed response from riders. Some looked at the participants with derision, while others laughed, and still others kept their gazes firmly focused outside the train.

Riders disembarked for photo-ops at Stadium SkyTrain station, then again at Waterfront where they switched to the Canada Line.

New Westminster’s Jamie Minnie wore a Robin costume for her first pantless Skytrain ride after only finding out about it yesterday.

“I’ve always wanted to do Improv (Anywhere) but this is the first time I actually knew the date,” she told The Huffington Post B.C.

“It’s really cool that they’re doing it in Vancouver.”

Michael Duncan, who went pantless in his third outing, said the event is retaining its shock value but that it doesn’t surprise commuters the way it used to.
