5 Fun Disney and Pixar Movies Available on Netflix Right Now

Summertime is for relaxing: hanging at the pool, reading a good book, enjoying some backyard barbeque, and of course, watching movies. Getting lost in an animated world for a few hours is exactly what this season was made for. So strap in, pop some corn, and explore the best Disney/Pixar movies on Netflix this summer.

Finding Dory

Go on an unforgettable adventure under the water with Dory, a well-meaning fish lacking a short-term memory. Ellen Degeneres voices the lovable title character who first made her debut in the 2003 smash hit, Finding Nemo. Join Dory in this 2016 flick as she goes on a search to find her long-lost parents. Twists and turns throughout the film keep viewers on the edge of their seats, all rooting for Dory to complete her quest with the help of wild and wacky friends along the way.

Moana

The ocean is calling you to watch this animated epic adventure. Moana, a strong-willed 16-year-old from the beautiful island paradise of Motonui, sets off on a quest to save her people. With the help of demi-god Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, she travels across the sea to complete her task. While on her voyage, Moana is joined by a funny rooster named Heihei who serves as comic relief. The best part of the movie is the realistic animation, whisking viewers away to a Polynesian paradise. The ocean looks so real that you can sometimes forget it’s animated!

Coco

Join Miguel and his canine pal Dante in Coco as they travel between the living world and the other side to find a long-lost relative before the sun comes up. The pair are unwittingly transported to the spirit world on the Day of the Dead and must find Miguel’s relative to get his blessing and return to the Land of the Living. This heartwarming Disney/Pixar film shines throughout, in part because of the wonderful voice acting of Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel. You’ll be transported to another realm and will be cheering for Miguel the entire way. Oh, and the songs aren’t bad, either.

Pocahontas

Pocahontas is a strong-willed 18-year-old member of the Powhatan tribe in Virginia. Her father is the chief and he wants her to marry the best warrior in the tribe, but her heart tells her he isn’t the right one. She meets an adventurer named John Smith who has sailed from Europe to the New World. She teaches him about being more tolerant, and he tells her about life where he came from. The two fall in love just in time to thwart a war between their people. Fun fact: the most famous song from Pocahontas, “Colors of the Wind,” won best original song at the Oscars in 1995.

Mulan

Mulan is a 1998 Disney film that explores what it means to honor your family and save your country by any means necessary. The title character, Fa Mulan, must disguise herself as a man to serve in the military and fulfill the government requirements to send one person from each family to fight. She is joined on her quest by Mushu, a small Chinese dragon voiced by Eddie Murphy, who serves as comic relief. She transforms herself into a man and trains beside some of the best fighters in the country. Will Fa Mulan and Mushu succeed in their endeavor? Watch and see!

Why the left hemisphere of the brain understands language better than the right

Nerve cells in the brain region planum temporale have more synapses in the left hemisphere than in the right hemisphere — which is vital for rapid processing of auditory speech, according to new research. There has already been ample evidence of left hemisphere language dominance; however, the underlying processes on the neuroanatomical level had not yet been fully understood.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting to Retire: 6 Ways to Do It Right

Bill Poznanski didn’t want to retire.

He worked for 35 years in the used car business in Toledo, Ohio, and he liked his job.

“My job was fun, and I could handle it physically,”  Poznanski says. “I had over 4,000 customers. My job was easy.”

But then an accident left his wife in need of a new hip. Taking time off to care for her after multiple operations and for trips to the doctors drained his vacation and sick days.

So early last year, at age 70 or 71 — “I forget exactly, because old people forget,” Poznanski says with a laugh — he gave his notice.

“They said if you ever want to come back, you’re more than welcome,” Poznanski says. “That hasn’t even crossed my mind. After I was retired for just a few months, I decided I should have retired a long time ago.

“I liked my job, but I like retirement even more.”

Whether you love your job or dream of the day you can dash from the building screaming “I’m outta heeeeere,” at some point in your career, you’ll need to consider retirement.

Yeah, first you have to figure out how to retire without going broke. The Penny Hoarder can help with that part, including calculating how much you’ll need to retire, staying on track financially to retire, choosing the right retirement accounts and avoiding financial slip-ups.

But once you clear the financial hurdles, there’s still the matter of preparing mentally and physically for retirement. Because if you’re like most people, you’ve been working for a while. Like, most-of-your-life a while.

Want to retire without looking back? Here are six tips you can use now to make the transition a happy one.

Retirement Tip #1: Make Plans Before You Retire

Before his last day on the job, Poznanski says he made decisions about what was important to him. Tops on the list: fishing.

“Way before I retired, I joined a local trout club,” Poznanski says. “You could go day or night, and I thought that would be fun, and it is.”

Poznanski found a place only a few minutes away from his house, thus avoiding the stress — and increased risk — of driving for half a day to find a spot at more congested fishing holes.

By researching places before he retired, Poznanski avoided the frustration and didn’t waste his money — unlike some of his fellow retirees.

I have a lot of friends who get frustrated because they have the money, but they’ve done some things they really didn’t enjoy because they didn’t know what to do,” he says.

Creating a routine is a key to a successful retirement, according to Julia Alexis, vice president of AARP Public Policy Institute, but that requires taking some time and effort to contemplate what you really want from retirement.

“It’s something people should anticipate and plan for,” Alexis says. “What brings you joy? What are some of the things you want to do as you start this next phase of your life?

“Think about the skills you brought to the workplace. How do you bring those skills to your community?”

Retirement Tip #2: Stay Social… or Get Social

Name someone you’ve hung out with in the past month who wasn’t a coworker.

If you’re having trouble remembering the names of any people who aren’t in your work sphere, you could be setting yourself up for more than just a lonely happy hour.

Socially isolated older adults are at greater risk for poor health, including depression, compared to their well-connected counterparts, according to a study published by the AARP Public Policy Institute. It found that social isolation results in medical conditions that cost an estimated $ 6.7 billion in additional Medicare spending annually.

Reconnecting with old friends is one way to create a network, especially with people from your age group who can relate to what it’s like during the early stages of retirement.

Poznanski says he convenes with former classmates regularly.

“We still get together every month on the third Wednesday for dinner, and we have 40 or 50 people show up,” Poznanski says. He points out that, while he appreciates his alone time, “that would get boring if I didn’t have my friends.”

And if you’re not in touch with your old friends, there are opportunities to make new ones through social organizations.

Groups like the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College, or ASPEC, in St. Petersburg, Florida, offer built-in social connections, says the organization’s director, Ken Wolfe.

The group, which has approximately 300 mostly retired members, offers four ways to participate — lifelong learning groups, community outreach, social events and mentoring and teaching opportunities at the college.

Sandy Tuite, formerly a registered nurse in Rochester, New York, says she and her husband Bob joined the organization in 2012 shortly after moving to St. Petersburg. Their interaction with students and faculty at the college has become an integral part of their busy social calendar.

“I have found I’m so active with ASPEC,” Sandy says. “I play golf three times a week; I’m in organizations with our association… We are just having a ball.

I am never bored,” says Sandy with a laugh, adding that she and Bob were planning their annual four-month trip back north for the summer. “I can’t wait to go and rest.”

Retirement Tip #3: Exercise Your Body

Depending on your job, you might have sat at a desk all day or, like Poznanski, were used to walking a used car lot.

Regardless of your job, after you retire there’s a greater likelihood that your lifestyle will become more sedentary, which is associated with increases in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to a 2018 study conducted in Finland.

Poznanski says he anticipated the drop-off in activity before he retired, so he bought a special kind of “exercise equipment.” One with four legs.

I decided that I need to get some exercise, so I bought a big, big dog,” Poznanski says. “He was a puppy when I bought him, but he’s 225 pounds now, and he’s exactly what I wanted. And we go walking an average of two miles every day.”

If you need a little more organized exercise routine, and a little less fur, you can find fitness challenges designed for seniors. One to consider is AARP’s Fit and Fun Challenge, which offers cheap and easy ways to start a fitness plan that keeps you accountable, according to Alexis.

“It’s really to get people to walk 30 minutes a day,” Alexis says. “If you can get someone to walk with you — like a buddy, a sister, a daughter, a mother — to motivate you and keep you accountable, you’re success rate is going to go up tremendously.

Retirement Tip #4: Exercise Your Brain

Three men converse while drinking wine.

There’s a good chance you’ve taken on additional job responsibilities as you approach retirement. Whether you’re the vice president of your division or the veteran team member everyone goes to for advice, your brain gets a daily workout.

And although you may be looking forward to the relief from daily job stresses, using retirement as an excuse to veg out in front of the TV can have dire consequences for your health. A 2015 Italian study found that the more years a person spent in retirement, the higher the risk of cognitive decline associated with dementia.

Choosing to engage your brain can make the next part of your life as enriching as your previous work life, says Alexis.

“The first day you walk out of the office with your gold watch, it really is about the social network and also learning new things,” she says. “Make sure you’re working those muscles — your brain as much as exercising your body.

“It’s all about keeping refreshed. Learning a new language, reading different types of books, journaling or writing will really help you refresh.”

One option for stretching your neurons is to get that degree you never had time for when you were working every day. Check out where to find free college courses for senior citizens in this post.

And groups like ASPEC offer not only a social outlet but the intellectual stimulation that might be missing, according to Wolfe. Members pay dues to participate in programs that range from social hours to educational lectures to kayaking excursions.

“A lot of these people were bosses at one time or another — whether it’s an operating room or a corporation — and they’re having to adjust,” Wolfe says. “[Joining a social group] is not the total answer to retirement, but it does provide particularly that piece of intellectual stimulation that might be hard to find elsewhere.”

Retirement Tip #5: Consider a Slow Exit From Work

An older man smiles.
Gene Skluzacek attends the ASPEC social at Eckerd College. “When I retired, I did some tutoring and odd jobs like that for a couple years,” Skluzacek said. Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

Retirement doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition.

Cutting back to part-time or becoming a consultant can provide extra income along with connections and stimulation, says Gene Skluzacek, a retired physics professor who taught at the University of Nebraska Omaha until 1999 and at St. Petersburg College until 2004.

“When I retired, I did some tutoring and odd jobs like that for a couple years,” says Skluzacek, now ASPEC’s elected president. “When I first quit working full time, it took a while to adjust. I was surprised how important work seemed to be in my life. I took that as a negative — that my work was sort of defining me. And that’s not true anymore.”

In fact, retirement can offer the opportunity to pursue something you’re passionate about, including a money-making gig or a whole new career.

And even if you haven’t updated your resume since the Bush administration — no, the other one — that doesn’t mean you can’t market yourself for another career.

Brandy Huderson, assistant professor at the University of the District of Columbia, says that even in a workplace that seems to rely heavily on technology, retirees’ soft skills and experience are needed.

“We have this technological world, but we still need a support base,” Huderson says. “We’re always going to need some of those basic skills that a lot of the retirees have and that they can bring in and integrate into the company in a new way.

If there’s something you’re passionate about, there’s always an avenue for you to do it.

Retirement Tip #6: Volunteer Your Newfound Time

Volunteering can provide many of the same benefits a job gave your brain, but perhaps in a less stressful way, according to Alexis.

Volunteering almost engages your brain the way a job does — it helps you with interaction with others; it helps you coordinate plans; it helps you think about how to complete tasks on schedule,” she says. “It’s really much akin to a job but with some benefits of having some fun.”

Peter Kent says the transition from work life to retirement could have been particularly difficult for him as a recovering workaholic who still attends Workaholics Anonymous meetings every week via phone.

At 73 years old, Kent is still president of AptaMatrix Inc., a biotechnology company, although he says he’s retired from day-to-day duties. He credits his participation in ASPEC as a major reason he’s enjoying retirement and estimates he attends at least 10 events every week.

Being a part of ASPEC has even allowed him to discover a new talent: public speaking. He volunteers to lead a couple of discussions each week.

“My wife and my son always laugh about this because I was so shy that they cannot believe I get up in front of a group and talk,” Kent says. “I wouldn’t even have joined a group like this if I’d been expected to talk 10 years ago.”

What changed?

“I don’t know what happened,” Kent says. “It’s a highly intelligent group; it’s a lot of fun of talk to and it’s a lot of fun to get a conversation going with them.”

He says the social group has given him a new outlet to pour his energies into. He spends 10 to 20 hours preparing for his group presentations.

“I’m still working a 40-hour week — probably more — like seven days a week,” Kent says, adding in his volunteer work. “It’s fun. I always thought work was fun, but it’s a much more comfortable, more relaxed life.”

What’s Next

Preparing for retirement allows those leaving the workplace to see it as less of an end and more of a “what’s next,” according to Alexis.

“Retirement means different things to different people,” she says, noting that whatever a retiree’s interests, “it’s about learning new things, it’s contributing to the community and it’s staying engaged.”

This is how to find the right bra size

Never wear the wrong bra again

breast cancer signs

Did you know most women wear the wrong bra size? Well this wouldn’t be the case if we all knew how to find the correct bra for our size, including measuring ourselves, would it? So we thought we’d grill two lingerie experts on everything you need to know about the subject, including how often to change bras, how often to wash them and everything else you need to know about the lingerie staple.

How to tell if you’re wearing the wrong bra size

Check the cups

Figleaves Garment Technologist Victoria Shelton says, ‘The cups should fully encase your breasts with no spilling out or sitting away.’

Check the underband

Debby Duckett, Buying Director at Boux Avenue, explains, ‘if it is rising up your back, lifting up at the front, or is too tight that it’s causing discomfort, we’d recommend going for a bra fitting.’

Check the straps

Victoria says, ‘The straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders with the majority of the support coming from the underband. The underband should be snug, supportive and sit level without riding up.’

Check where the bra sits

Debby says, ‘It’s also worth checking where your bra is positioned. If it’s standing away at the centre front, or if the wire is sat on breast tissue, it’s not fitting you properly. You can check this by pressing the wire at the end; if the wire bounces it means it is sat on breast tissue and isn’t secure.’

bra

How to measure your bra size

The easiest way to get your bra measurements is by going in for a bra fitting, however if you don’t have time, or would rather do it at home, then Debby says you can do it in three easy steps.

  1. Grab a tape measure and start with measuring your underband, which is the part of the bra that provides the most support. Standing in front of a mirror with the centimetre side facing outwards and keeping the tape measure straight, level and tight, measure the circumference of your body, just underneath your bust.
  2. Use the conversion chart below to find your underband size.
  3. You can then work out your cup size from there, by comparing the new underband size to your previous underband size. If your underband size is now smaller, it’s likely that you’ll need to go up a cup size. If your underband size is the same but your bust is spilling out of the cups, you’ll need to go down a cup size. If the cups are gaping and there is space, go down a cup size.

Conversion chart

63/65/67 30
68/70/72 32
73/75/77 34
78/80/82 36
83/85/87 38
88/90/92 40

How often to go for bra fittings

Your breast size can fluctuate due to varying factors like hormones, ageing, weight gain etc, so experts recommend getting bra fittings every six months.

how often wash bra

How to check your bra fits

Victoria says, ‘I would recommend checking the fit every few times you wear the bra. Check the straps are sitting correctly on the shoulders and with the right amount of adjustment. The underband should be snug but supportive, over time the elastane in the bra will become worn and less supportive, it is vital to change your bra at this point.

How long do bras last?

‘With regular wear, bras can last from 6 months to a year,’ Victoria adds.

When is it time to change your bra?

‘Colour and shape are the two main areas that tell you when it’s time to replace a bra. If the underband is too loose on the tightest hook or the straps are no longer staying in place, your bra is no longer giving you the support you need. If the colour has started to fade and the fabric has gone a little frayed, you have the perfect excuse to treat yourself to some new lingerie!’ Debby says.

Amazon PillPack

Hot on the heels of #disrupting the grocery world by purchasing Whole Foods, Amazon is dipping its toes into the US healthcare market with a billion-dollar acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack. The deal is set to close in the second half of this year, and according to some experts, Amazon-backed changes could come to the online pharmacy literally overnight.

“Amazon could rename PillPack as ‘Amazon Pharmacy,’ and start right away,” Talha Sattar, CEO of internet pharmacy start-up Nimble, told CNBC. “The bigger question is about the form that the offering will take.”

Expert Tips for Selecting the Right House Plan

The Winchester plan offers a great open
concept kitchen and family room for informal
entertaining and a separate dining room for
more formal events!

It can be a little overwhelming to decide between so many fantastic options so we asked Diego Rizzardo of SanDiego Homes to share some of the tips he uses to help homeowners pick the best home plan for their lot at their Lakeside Living community in Innisfil!

LIFESTYLE Consider the daily needs, activities and hobbies of those who will live there. If you love to cook, a kitchen with plenty of pantry and workspace is a must. If you are a fitness buff, choose a plan that allows space for a gym. If you work from home, you will need space for a home office. Another important aspect is your entertaining style. “If you often have a large number of guests, a flexible, open concept space is a must,” says Diego. “If you prefer a more intimate setting, you may want a plan like The Winchester that has a separate, formal dining space.” You will also want to consider bedroom space if guests often stay overnight.

The Strathmore plan offers bungalow style living
with plenty of space for guests, perfect for
those who love to entertain and want a home
that will allow them to age in place.

CURRENT AND FUTURE NEEDS It is important to consider how your needs may change over the next 5-10 years. A newlywed couple may feel that a two bedroom plan is perfect for them but if they plan to have children in a few years, they will outgrow that plan quite quickly. For older homeowners, it is important to consider future health and mobility needs. “We offer a variety of bungalow style plans that will allow homeowners to age in place without costly renovations down the road,” says Diego. “Wide hallways are also standard in all models to ensure ease of mobility.” A main floor laundry, master bedroom and bathroom may not seem like a necessity right now but may greatly affect your ability to live independently in the home later in life!

PROPERTY AND LOCATION The lot you are building on and the surrounding area may also affect your decision. How will the position of the sun and wind direction affect the home? What is located on each side of the property? Large windows that take in a beautiful view of the sunset are great but those same windows facing the side of the neighbor’s home are much less enjoyable. “Choose a plan that will take advantage of the best aspects of your property.” says Diego, “But also consider available outdoor space and choose a plan that leaves space for outdoor entertaining, gardening or other outdoor activities you enjoy.”

5 ‘Minecraft’-Like Games You Can Play Right Now

Minecraft may look simple, but beneath its plain exterior lies an interesting game with endless creative options. However, Minecraft isn’t just a building game. Players can explore intricate mines and battle against spiders, skeletons, zombies, or all three — which can be strangely exhilarating. But nothing lasts forever, especially games. So, once you’ve become a Minecraft god, what’s the next game you should conquer? Well, we have some suggestions for you. Here are five Minecraft-like games you can play right now.

Roblox

roblox
The creative alternative everyone wanted.

Roblox not only looks and feels like Minecraft, it also allows you to build an entire world from the ground up. The popular MMO game boasts an in-depth and intricate design system that allows players to immerse themselves in someone else’s creation or vice versa.

The kinds of worlds players can create range from wild pirate islands to bustling cities. And with endless items to place in each environment, the only thing limiting players is their own imagination. Building your own kingdom, beach, or city in Roblox is sure to scratch that creative itch that Minecraft left behind.

The Forest

Minecraft‘s survival mode can get very scary and intense, especially when your character is starving. Now, imagine an entire game built around this concept that has players fight and build shelter, tools, and fire to survive. That’s where The Forest, the Minecraft-like horror game that no one asked for but everyone loved, comes in.

With its realistic, Gothic aesthetic, The Forest pushes Minecraft‘s survival mode even further, resulting in a more bone-chilling experience. In Minecraft, enemies just kill you. However, in The Forest, enemies will knock you out and drag you into their dark underground lair where countless creature lie in wait, ready to pounce. Adrenaline junkies should definitely give The Forest a try. Just make a point to keep close to the fire and have a crafted weapon ready.

Terasology

The same look and feel — but with minions.

Terasology‘s design is near identical to Minecraft‘s. It also similarly allows players to craft, build, and mine. But Terasology has a lot to offer players that Minecraft doesn’t, such as a more realistically rendered landscape, an environment that can change over time, and even the ability to create loyal minions.

The villager NPCs in Minecraft are interesting and good for trading, but not much help in a fight. They just run around grunting or get turned into zombies. This isn’t the case in Terasology, where NPCs can be spawned from your toolbar. These NPCs can take inventory, mine blocks, build their own societies, and trade with you. This is definitely the game for those who love control but want their creations to lighten their workload.

Stardew Valley

Mining and farming are some of the most important and interesting parts of playing Minecraft. Mining helps you improve your tools, while farming allows you to live on the land. While smaller in scope, Stardew Valley also allows you to care for your own farm and mine to upgrade your tools.

Unlike Minecraft, where you can only trade with villager NPCs, the RPG-style Stardew Valley allows you to cultivate and deepen relationships with characters in the town, which can lead to friendships and even a romantic relationship. Being able to take an interest in the in-game community, creates a more immersive experience for players than what’s found in Minecraft. Everyone has wanted to knock off the grunting villagers in Minecraft at some point in time, but in Stardew Valley, you won’t be able to get enough of the game’s interesting and engaging little community.

Starbound

Who doesn’t want to give ‘Minecraft’ in space a go?

The beginning of Starbound sees you fleeing from your home. Eventually, you find yourself stuck on a planet where you are forced to explore, construct, and collect resources to escape. The game aesthetically resembles Stardew, boasting the same RPG gaming style. But Minecraft fans will love the game’s creative crafting mechanic and intense survival mode.

A more story-driven game than Minecraft, Starbound doesn’t limit what players can achieve or create. Players can shape their own future — whether that be as a farmer or an intergalactic estate agent. There are also plenty of opportunities for players to become battle-tested through boss fights and fun and challenging dungeon runs. There’s nothing more satisfying than throwing yourself in the dark depths of a jungle in an attempt to claim the treasures within.

Uruguayan Soccer Player’s Post-Goal Dance Has All the Right Moves

Uruguay’s Luis Suarez is one of the sport’s leading scorers in international play — and is continuing to build his reputation as a World Cup force across this year’s games so far.

During Monday’s 2018 World Cup match against Russia, Suarez secured Uruguay’s early lead with a powerful free kick, securing the point after an unlucky sidestep by one of the Russian defenders. But perhaps the best part of the striker’s performance in the game, beyond just the kick itself, was his subsequent celebration.

Sliding on his knees across the grass, Suarez finished up his moment of self-congratulation with an exuberant shimmy, leading some online to bring out comparisons with famously charismatic performer Freddie Mercury.

Uruguay ultimately shut down Russia 3-0 in the game, making them three for three in their 2018 World Cup appearances so far and seeing them comfortably advance to the next round of play. If past performance is any indication, we might yet get to see more of Suarez’s suave post-goal moves in the upcoming matches.

Is Working from Home Right for You? These Do’s and Don’ts Are Here to Help

I work a traditional 8-to-5 office job, and it is taxing in many ways. I have to get up early, make myself presentable and start my commute early enough to reach the office on time. What starts as an eight- or nine-hour workday easily morphs into 10 or 11 hours once I take preparation and commute times into account.

The average commute for an American worker is up to 26.4 minutes according to 2015 U.S. Census data — and that time increases if you live in a metro area. It’s no wonder more employees are asking to work remotely, either on a full-time basis or as needed. Working from home, or WFH, offers numerous benefits to employees — but, as it turns out, offering WFH options also benefits the employer.

Employer Benefits

Global Workplace Analytics evaluated thousands of studies focused on companies who offered work-from-home flexibility. While they found too many to list in this article, the main benefits included an increase in productivity among employees, fewer people calling in sick (and therefore less lost time) and a reduction in burnt-out employees.

Steve Pritchard, HR manager at Cuuver, brings up some additional benefits for employers. “Giving employees the opportunity to work from home if they wish is great for helping to retain staff, especially those who have quite a long commute to work,” he explains. “You can list it on your job advertisements as one of your company benefits, which will help to attract a high caliber of applicants.”

Another perk for employers concerns sick-day usage. “If a member of staff doesn’t feel up to coming into the office but they can get work done from home, this means you aren’t a man down – this makes for a massive perk for both the business and the employee,” says Pritchard.

As far as managing remote employees, Pritchard thinks it’s doable. “Naturally, it can be harder to manage remote workers, so the best way to do this is to implement a progression tool,” he says. “Whether it’s a Google Calendar or specialist software like Zoho or Trello, remote workers can feed into the system what work they are doing, how long it is going to take them and when it will be completed by. Phone calls also help everyone to stay connected when working from home.”

Employee Benefits

The benefits of working from home for employees are probably pretty obvious. You save time (and money) on your commute, you don’t have to adhere to a dress code (though some clothes are preferable) and you can hang out with your dog (or cat, no judgement here).

But there are hidden benefits to working from home that you might not have considered.

As The Muse points out, working from home doesn’t mean you’re stuck in your office all the time. It’s actually a great and flexible way to still get work done when you’re traveling. You can also take your laptop outside and get some work done when the weather is nice, instead of being stuck inside a stuffy office.

I spoke with Dahna Heineman, senior security program manager at DXC Technologies, to learn more about the benefits of working from home for employees. Heineman has been working from home full time for five years and loves the benefits it provides her.

Heineman has no commute and spends less than ever on things like makeup, hair products and dry cleaning. She’s also found that working from home has allowed her to become more attuned to changes in tone of voice.

Heineman also appreciates the ability to work uninterrupted from home. “No one randomly pops up at your desk to interrupt your train of thought while you are working on a security product workflow for multiple services and regions,” she says. “No office noise around or people chatting in the background make it easier to concentrate.”

Drawbacks

Of course, just because working from home can be beneficial for workers and their employers doesn’t mean everyone can (or should) do it. While Heineman generally likes working from home, she acknowledges that there is also a downside.

No commute might sound heavenly to many workers, but it could actually be detrimental. “You have zero time from when you stop working to decompress,” explains Heineman. Rather, you go straight from work life to family life without stopping to take a break.

And while working from home gives you the peace to concentrate on the task at hand, it can also be lonely. “No one ever pops up to give you a break, a laugh or interact with you,” says Heineman. If you’re a social person this can be extremely demoralizing.

Working from home could also mean you take fewer breaks throughout the day. For lunch, Heineman says, “You tend to grab your food, eat it alone and not take a full hour as your break.” Additionally, you could end up “schedul[ing] back to back calls and never even stand[ing] up for six hours.”

This can lead to issues with your health — both mental and physical.

Do’s and Don’ts

If you’re lucky enough to have an employer that supports working from home, you need to be aware of some do’s and don’ts to make sure you don’t take advantage of the policy and potentially ruin it for your co-workers.

Do get ready for work in the morning.

Diane Gottsman writes in an article for HuffPost that getting dressed, brushing your hair and washing your face can help you get in the right mindset for the workday. It might be tempting to work in your pajamas, but putting on pants and a shirt will tell your brain that it’s time to work rather than lounge.

Do make sure you are available during regular business hours.

“Your availability to colleagues should be no different when working remotely than it would be if you were in the office,” Barry Chignell writes in an article for CIPHR.

Don’t skip your lunch break.

“You have the luxury of being more flexible with your day,” writes Gottsman, “but sticking to a routine, which includes planning for healthy meals, will enable you to work more resourcefully than wandering around the house for a cup of noodle soup or a few handfuls of chips.” You’ll enjoy the mental break and will return to work ready to conquer your busy afternoon.

Do create a home office.

“Preferably, you need natural light and a door, so that you can separate your work from your home life when the workday is done,” writes Bill Murphy Jr. in an article for Inc. It might be tempting to work from your couch, but having a designated office space in your home will help you focus on the task at hand.

Don’t get distracted.

Sure, it’s easy enough to do a few chores throughout the day when you’re working from home, but make sure you’re still putting in your hours. “Whether you work in a brick-and-mortar building, local coffee shop or your personal domain, it’s up to you to control your personal disturbances,” explains Gottsman.

That means turning off the TV, staying off social media and scheduling breaks if necessary to take care of things around the house.

Working from home isn’t for everyone, but if you have the right mindset it can be a very rewarding experience. Whether your employer allows the occasional remote day or lets you telecommute full time, make sure you stay productive and switched on when working away from the office.

Catherine Hiles works from home very occasionally in her day job, and as a freelance writer. She prefers the social aspect of an office environment, but appreciates flexibility when she needs to focus on important tasks.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

Red, Yellow, Green: Is Your Job Right For You?

is your job right for you pinDo you like your job (or career)? If you were asked, “is your job right for you,” what would you say? There are a number of different ways to ponder this question — whether the work-life balance you’ve got is the job/career is the work-life balance you want; whether the salary for the job is worth it to you; passion for the job or its goals; whether you think the job is “important” enough for you and the promise you hope you have. I recently sat in on an interesting talk from Carter Cast, the former CEO of WalMart.com (talking about his new book, The Right—and Wrong—Stuff: How Brilliant Careers Are Made and Unmade) (affiliate link), and he added a new way to know whether your job is right for you: the micro level, day-to-day happiness stuff, which he called Red Yellow Green. He noted that when he sat down and thought about his job as CEO, most of the day was red for him — stuff he didn’t want to do, stuff he dreaded doing, stuff he felt was a waste of time. On the flip side, when he thought about the job right before CEO, he found that his day was mostly green — he looked forward to it, thought it was a great match for his skills, strengths, and passions — and ultimately wanted to do the tasks in front of him. (If your own skills, strengths, and passions are somewhat a mystery to you, this Fast Company interview talks more about the different personality types that may be at play when you do this assessment — we’ve talked personality tests before but Cast spoke highly of the Hogan test.)
I thought it was an extraordinary talk, and thinking back to my old legal career I knew exactly what he meant by “red” — the vast majority of my days were filled with red tasks. So let’s discuss here, ladies — if you look at your career (or job) from a micro-perspective of the day to day — how much of your day is filled with green tasks? How much of your day is filled with red tasks? Let’s take it a step further — are those red tasks something you can delegate to subordinates? Are they growing pains (a necessary part of growing, after all, is doing the work you’re not quite ready for yet) or are they just unpleasant tasks (to you) that will always be unpleasant?

Is your job right for you? There are a TON of ways to answer this question and figure out if you're in the right job or career -- but one way to do it is to look at the tasks in front of you each day and play the game is "red, yellow, or green." Are you looking forward to the tasks and think they play to your skills, strengths and passions (green) -- or is your day a sea of red tasks that you have to do because they're part of your job? We ponder the question, in part based on Carter Cast's new book, "The Right—and Wrong—Stuff: How Brilliant Careers Are Made and Unmade."

The World’s Best Statement Earrings Right Now

Despite the staying power of jewelry box mainstaysthe gold hoops and dainty, stackable rings we wear over a thousand timesthere’s one jewelry trend that’s making us forget about the rest of our staples: statement earrings. As far as jewelry trends are concerned, summer 2018 is quickly shaping up to be the season of statement earrings, so naturally, we jumped at the chance to bring you our complete guide to the trend. Whether it’s the subtler statement of artsy baroque pearls or attention-grabbing XL crystal earrings that speaks to you most, there’s an earring trend for everyone.

The F/W 18 runways were filled with delightfully quirky adornments. Prepare to channel your grade school days with earrings that can only be inspired by arts and crafts projects. Or manifest a beach vacation via whimsical seashells. The statement earrings of the season have arrived, and we don’t think you’ll be disappointed by the fresh options that await below.

Unlike the perfectly spherical shapes found in pieces of mainstream pearl jewelry, it’s the organic, fresh-from-the-sea shapes of baroque pearls that couldn’t be farther from their precious counterparts (no offense to regular pearls). It’s their imperfect shapes that feel modern and unique.

In the mood for more pretty summer trends? You have to see our big, beautiful guide to this summer’s strappy heel trend.

Admit it, the 6-year-old in you just got excited about this art class–inspired earring trend. It’s the quirky-cool mashup of contrasting colors and geometric shapes on shoulder-grazing drop earrings that are just offbeat enough to be interesting. It seems that the season’s biggest accessories trends (scrunchies! barrettes!) are perfectly nostalgic, and these crafty statement earrings are certainly no exception.

Even if you have zero plans to enjoy a beach vacation in the near future, embrace the seashore via whimsical shell earrings. With an entire wave of seashell jewelry to be had this season (pun very much intended), you’ll find us quickly jumping at the chance to embrace the subtler statement of seashell earrings.

What’s a statement earring if it’s not making, well, a big statement? This blinged-out trend is completely “extra” but in the best way possible.

Okay, now for a statement earring trend that we swear you can wear every single day. Look for psychedelic swirling patterns in rich jewel tones like midnight blue and kelly green.

While it’s classic gold hoops that are fashion’s forever favorite when it comes to jewelry staples, this season’s statement hoops are taking the classic up a notch. Creative shapes and negative-space hoops are the standout details to look out for.

This earring trend is one that’s been subtly gaining ground over the past few seasons, but now we’re excited to report that the trend has finally broke. Minimally designed drop earrings with sculptural shapes are both elegant and whimsical at the same time.

Home away from home: 5 hotels that will make you feel right at home

When people decide to go on vacation and they search for the accommodation of their choice, the one that will suit their needs best, there are usually all kinds of factor people take into consideration. It could be the location of the property, the star ratings, the room amenities, the type of food that is served or just how good of reviews the hotel has received. We could easily say that location and service are generally the top reasons why someone, traveling alone or not, would choose a place to spend their next vacation for.

Just like there are all kinds of reasons for going on a trip, there are also some very interesting and eye-opening reasons for why one hotel or B&B would be better than the other. In fact, some people base their decision on where to stay on the most unexpected reasons, for example, how at home the property will make them feel. Now, it sounds almost like an oxymoron, why would anyone want to travel anywhere just so they could feel like they never left home at the end of the day? Well, we guess there are people that like the idea of feeling like they never really left. We believe it’s more than that and that what makes a hotel be considered one that has that cozy vibe has to do with how friendly the service is, how comfortable the hotel’s amenities are and all those little things that make one feel as relaxed and as comfy as possible. Here are five hotels that will give you that homey feeling and that take the meaning of hospitality to a whole new level:

Atemporal-Hotelito – Lima, Peru

This renovated 1940’s mansion in the hip district of Lima, Peru, offers the guests a personalized lodging experience in the most convenient and flexible way. This completely private property is unique in the sense that it allows exclusive entry for the guests. The rooms and the entire decor is conceived as the home of the worldly photographer who is barely at home while he travels the world. The overall vibes are relaxed and informal and once people enter this townhouse like hotel, they can’t help but feel right at a home, a luxurious home. The eclectic design has the perfect modern touches. That is one place any tourist would like to come back to after a whole day of exploring the city.

The PIG at Combe – Devon, England

The PIG at Combe in Southwest England in the county named Devon has the perfect homely charm. This grand country estate might be secluded but is very easily accessible. Everything about this place screams comfort. Even the rooms are named in a way that will make you feel as cozy as possible. You have the Snug rooms, the Comfy rooms and the Comfy Luxe room if you’re feeling like you need a little pampering. If you are visiting in the summer there will be plenty of local festivals to check out.

Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa – Laguna Beach, CA

The minute you enter this castle-like beachfront property, you can’t help but feel the freedom in air. This historical building dates all the way back to the beginning of the 30th century and was designed by one of the first local Californian architects. This sea-side gem is 23 rooms that are designed by Moroccan influences and eclectic furnishings for a warm and atmosphere. Located in the heart of the vibrant Laguna Beach, this property is your absolute perfect oceanfront getaway.

28 Kothi – Jaipur, India

Surrounded by lush gardens, this boutique and intimate guest-house located in the heart of Jaipur will offer an exclusive homely feeling away from the city bustle. There are only five bedrooms designed in a mix of modern and local roots. Some of the amenities include a library, a yoga studio and an-all vegetarian menu. Dazzling minimalism is here.

Killiehuntly Farmhouse & Cottage – Scotland

If you are lucky enough to visit the Killiehuntly Farmhouse any time soon, you will be pleasantly surprised to find traditional design mixed with Scandinavian touches, or like the owners like to call it – Scandi-Scot. The fact that there are only four rooms in this estate and one cottage, provides the ultimate private and luxurious experience away from everything noisy. This place is perfect for those seeking for nature, solitude, design, serenity and comfort all under the same roof.

This map shows what a nuclear bomb would do if it landed right on your house

nuclear bomb map

We live in very bizarre times. Nuclear weapons are commonplace, at least insofar as lots of countries have access to them but never actually use them, but tensions between superpowers never seem to go away. The US is in an open war of words with Russia, while North Korea, despite being on its best behavior lately, is still seemingly a threat to just about everyone. The Middle East is in constant unrest, and nobody knows who, if anyone, they can actually trust. With all that in mind, let’s pretend someone launched a nuke at your house.

Outrider.org is an activist group made up of scientists and experts who hope to curb the worldwide nuclear threat through an information campaign. To that end, they’ve created a freely accessible tool to simulate what would happen if a nuclear weapon were dropped on any particular spot on the globe. The result is both fascinating and frightening.

Five Sneakers to Consider Right NowI just got back from a trip…

Five Sneakers to Consider Right Now

I just got back from a trip to Florida during which I wore sneakers almost exclusively (the versatile, relatively anonymous J. Crew Nike Killshot 2)–on the plane, chasing my kids (maybe chasing my kids on the plane), to the local botanic garden, even dining on the beach. Slipping back into my routine at home, it was sort of a bummer to slip back into dress shoes. With the recent sort of sea change in sneaker design, I’ve been thinking a lot about what sneakers I actually like and why, and also trying to expand my awareness beyond standard Vans Era or Converse Chuck Taylor recommendations, which remain relevant, cheap, and wearable. Five sneakers I think are worth considering right now, which are neither budget (<$ 100) nor designer ($ 400+):

image

  • Hoka One One HupanaI appreciate genuinely comfortable sneakers (I also like Vans Old Skools, which I find terribly uncomfortable). If you want to get on the comfy dad sneakers wave but aren’t ready for the “full father” of Nike Air Monarchs, the Hupanas are relatively low-key shoes from Hoka One One, which makes technical running shoes with big fat, cushion-y soles–the anti-Vibram five fingers. They’ve recently gotten some additional attention from snobs like me due to a collaboration with Engineered Garments.
  • Nike Air Max 180 (lead image, also modeled by our friend Kyle above): I like retro sneakers whose technology, considered cutting edge at one time, now seems sort of quaint. Nike recently retro-ed this pair of running shoes, originally released in 1991 with a weirdly artsy ad campaign featuring Ralph Steadman. I remember being blown away by the full air sole unit, which in retrospect doesn’t seem that crazy? Other brands were putting catapults in their soles. The Air Max 180 in the original colors of blinding white, blue, and sort of pink, seems particularly easy to wear casually, with chinos and a leather jacket or in hot weather with shorts.

image

  • Asahi Belted LowI still love classic sneaker silhouettes and I love old things recreated with a level of detail and craft that are not at all warranted by the originals. Asahi built the belted low based on an old Nike tennis sneaker that used canvas tape in an  effort to keep the sole and upper intact during intense tennis. Asahi’s version has an elegant shape and a thick, vulcanized sole (as with most vulcanized shoes, your foot actually sits below the top of the tape line–it’s not THAT thick of a sole).

  • Reproduction of Found French military sneakerI like the running shoe formula of rubber outsole, white foam midsole, and colorful suede upper found in dozens of vintage Nike, Saucony, and New Balance models. Reproduction of Found, which specializes in recreating various military sneakers (like Margiela’s German Army Trainers, only for many services/periods), made a version of a French military issue sneaker from the 90s that I really dig. I like that, at first glance, you can’t tell if it’s fancy or from KMart.

Right Now, You Can Buy The H&M Collection That Just Debuted in Paris

Welcome to Runway Matters, where we’re delivering notes straight from the runway so you can quickly digest the most important trends and noteworthy moments from the F/W 18 shows.

Walking into the H&M show during Paris fashion week was completely transportive. As guests arrived, they were asked to remove their shoes and place them inside cubbies for retrieval after the show. Then, handed a pair of traditional Japanese Tabi socks to change into. Walking up the grand stairs of the Musée des Arts Décoratif, there were giant paper lanterns hanging overhead and horigotatsu tables set low to the ground. Guests were then served sake and sushi and an assortment of other Japanese cuisine specialties. The entire experience was pretty spectacular and left no question about the inspiration behind the Studio Collection. When the show began, models (with big smiles across their faces) weaved through the tables to debut the pieces—big names like Adwoa Aboah among them. And as it ended, paper cherry blossoms fell from the ceiling. While I could go on, I’m going to boil the whole experience down to two important takeaways, below.

Speaking to the development of the collection, H&M’s Head of Design and Creative Director, Pernilla Wohlfahrt, explained how Japan became a source of influence. “Japan itself is so inspirational. The whole city of Tokyo is, with the energy, and also the landscape in a place like Kyoto with mountains. As a country it’s really inspiring.” The design team took a trip there a year ago to begin the creative process. The Japanese inspiration, while undeniable, wasn’t literal but observed in nuanced ways. The prints were developed from broken-up letters in the Japanese alphabet done with brushstrokes—a tribute to the history and heritage of Japan. And current street style also inspired the design team which carries though to the silhouettes and styling. There’s an emphasis on layering with dresses over pants, and fringed pieces over tops and trousers. Wohlfahrt added that she thinks that “fashion needs to be a mix of of old things and new things,” which is why you’ll find evidence of each in the collection.

In a step many fashion brands have been taking, H&M’s Studio Collection became available for purchase immediately following the runway show. Instead of the six month gap that has traditionally existed between first viewing a collection and actually being able to buy it, customers can order the pieces on the spot. Which means, if inspiration strikes you, it’s only a matter of days before you can wear the fashion plucked straight from the runway. Shop our edit of pieces from the collection here.

‘UnREAL’ Premiere Recap: Here for the Right Reasons

If you’ve seen Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, you were already introduced to the new Rachel (Shiri Appleby). During the Monday, February 26, premiere of UnREAL, Quinn (Constance Zimmer) went to a farm where Rachel was seeking treatment to tell her that she needed her to come back and help save Everlasting. However, the woman that stepped back on set was a new Rachel, one who was living a life of celibacy and truth. She made that perfectly clear with her first, epic monologue to Chet:

“You are an overpaid, incompetent man baby who’s riding on the backs of women who do all of your work for you. You’re too dumb to know how pathetic it is, so we had to use you to push Serena through to the network just because you were born with a dick. I never understood what Quinn saw in your fat, sweat, drug-addled ass but whatever it was, you wasted the best years of her life and destroyed the one person who is ever gonna care about you.”

This season of Everlasting is like none other. Quinn, Rachel, Chet and co. are now finding a husband for their first ever suitress. Rachel chose Serena (Caitlin FitzGerald), a strong and successful woman who was actually looking for love. However, she was determined and strong, which meant she was challenging for Quinn and Rachel.

unreal
James Dittiger/Lifetime

For example, she refused to wear a cleavage-bearing sequined gown and instead wore her own conservative dress for night one. She also immediately sent home the jockey contestant since he was clearly just for the show and not a viable option for her.

However, after she snuck away with one of the men she did connect with – a single fireman, Owen – Rachel picked her up in golf cart and delivered the rough truth: Quinn could make the entire world hate her if she didn’t follow her instructions. So, she agreed to kiss the jockey and keep him. To do so, she got wasted … so much so that she ended up sleeping with the jockey, throwing up, then still sending him home.

This season, Everlasting also hired a new shrink. Dr. Simon was a real doctor, who used to help people with very serious issues. However, by the end of the episode, Rachel realized that he wasn’t there for the contestants – he was there for her. It’s safe to say, she may need it. Jeremy was also back and while he apologized to Rachel for hitting her, she was a little more concerned about the fact that he killed two people. However, he told her he did it for her.

Needless to say, this season is just heating up. Even Madison is hooking up again, this time with Gary, the network president.

UnREAL airs on Lifetime Mondays at 10 p.m. ET.

The Right Way to Order Room Service at a Hotel

Room service is one of the best elements of staying in a hotel, and even if you never use it, it’s good to know you have the option. Sometimes it’s the convenience we look for, while other times it is the indulgence of room service that can be so appealing. But, for many people, room service can be overpriced and dissatisfying.

When you’re on vacation, you’ve already spent money on the trip, not to mention the cost of flights and hotel. The costs all add up, but there might be an occasion on which you feel like you want to make the most of room service. If that’s the case, you’ll need to refer to our awesome hacks for the best way of making the most out of your room service.

Order course by course

One of the best techniques when it comes to room service is to make sure you order course by course. That means you order as you would in a restaurant, so the food arrives to you hot and ready to eat. Sure, this is something that won’t work when you’re in a rush, but we strongly suggest you do it when you can. There’s nothing worse than receiving all three courses together, only for your entrée to go cold while you eat your starter.

Choose wisely

It’s also more important than you might imagine to choose wisely, and make sure you pick the right kinds of foods. Think about how well a dish will travel – if you’re on a high floor, and the food is coming from the basement, it could take a while to get to you. Something like soup or a club sandwich would be ideal to order, and this is something you need to account for. When you’re choosing your dish, make sure you choose sensibly, and always go for a local specialty if you get the choice.

Always speak to someone

Because of technology nowadays, many hotels offer the option of digital room service. This might sound like a really great idea, but we actually recommend speaking to someone in person. It’s much simpler to articulate what you want this way, and you feel more comfortable with the order you’ve placed. This way you’ll also be able to get recommendations from the person taking your order.

Speak to a sommelier

If you like wine (who doesn’t?), you can always ask to speak to the hotel’s sommelier! This is a great way of finding out about the best wines they do and helping you choose something that’s going to take your fancy. This won’t be possible to do everywhere, but you will likely have the option if you’re at a destination hotel, particularly in wine country. Make the most of this option if you have it, and really get a feel for the wine at the hotel.

These are some of the best tips and hints you can use to make sure you order room service in the right way. There are a lot of great ways you can enjoy room service, but you can also make a lot of mistakes too if you’re not careful. Use our ideas and hints to make the process smoother and more fun for you.

Home Security System Amazon

How many conventional motion detectors would it take to cover every inch of your home. Think about it. Even small homes have so many nooks and crannies that it’s almost impossible to ensure 100% coverage with traditional infrared or camera-based motion detection systems. That’s where the Aura Starter Kit and Accessory Beacons comes in. Instead of using technology based on “sight,” Aura monitors the patterns created by Wi-Fi signals that constantly bounce around every inch of your house or apartment. These signals create patterns, and motion interrupts those patterns in specific ways. Aura can sense those interruptions and identify where motion is occurring. Then, it can integrate with whatever smart home system you use to trigger an action or, of course, an alarm.

Here are the highlights from the product page:

  • Easy setup: Simply plug in the devices and download the Aura app to get started
  • Coverage: Use the Aura Starter Kit to cover up to 700 square feet, and add up to 3 -Accessory Beacons to expand coverage and unlock motion localization capabilities
  • Automation: Connect Aura to your favourite smart home products using IFTTT, or control Aura’s Scenes by voice with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant
  • Privacy: Aura has no cameras or microphones so rest assured you can keep your private life private

Ask an Expert: Finding the Right Area Rug

I am having trouble finding a rug that works for my dining room! What would you suggest?

First, ensure you are looking for the correct size; large enough that you can pull the chair back with the feet still on the rug. Also keep in mind that the dining table covers the center of the rug so the border design is more important than the center.

If you are unable to find the right rug for your specific space, our custom rug program offers an easy solution. This starts with a home visit where I take measurements and go over your design inspirations. We also determine size, texture and material and help you select colors from an extensive range of options. This information is used to create a design that perfectly matches your needs and style.

Once the artwork has been approved, the design is sent to a master weaver where it is reproduced into an original, beautiful, hand knotted rug. The length of time it takes to complete a rug can vary depending on the materials you choose. Our custom rug program guarantees you’ll have the perfect rug without sacrificing color, style or size! – Nishant Mehrotra, Indo Designer Rugs

When is the right time to start infants on solid foods?

The first study of a nationally representative group of US infants reports that more than half of babies are currently introduced to complementary foods, that is, foods or drinks other than breast milk or formula, sooner than they should be. Babies who were never breastfed or breastfed for less than four months were most likely to be introduced to foods too early. These findings emphasize the need to introduce foods at the proper time to get the most benefit from breast milk or formula.

Ah, moms’ groups on Facebook. We know them, we love them, we couldn’t survive without them. We also grit our teeth at them, screenshot some of the comments and show our other friends, because WHAAAT??

I belong to a few different Facebook-based moms’ groups, and they definitely provided a lifeline when I needed one, introduced me to some terrific mamas, and led me to some great resources. I have also tossed my phone off the bed in rage, rolled my eyes, and yelled at the internet.

With all those things in mind, I used an online bingo card generator to poke fun at the groups we love to hate, (but also love to love). Enjoy.

How to Find Clients That Make You Want to Swipe Right

contractor-meeting

Let’s face it: when homeowners and contractors match up, the connection can be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. A healthy contracting business should generate about 50% of its leads from repeat customers or referrals, so it pays to woo your clientele the right way.

But developing that kind of client/contractor partnership takes work—and it starts by finding the right kind of customers in the first place. These are the kinds of homeowners who are such a joy to work with that you practically get goosebumps every time they call. Clients like these can easily turn into lifelong customers, but only if you lay the groundwork for a successful relationship. As our Valentine’s treat to you, today we’ll teach you how to find quality leads—and keep them coming back for more!

a heart carved in wood

Identifying Clients That Make Your Contractor’s Heart Go Pitter-Patter

You can’t expect to get any dates if you don’t put yourself out there (that’s pretty much why dating apps like Tinder exist in the first place). The same rule applies to your business, too. The more time you spend on lead-building, the better your chances for a genuine connection.

Of course, there are leads, and then there are quality leads—blindly playing the numbers game isn’t a great strategy for your business or your love life. So the question then is how can you find leads that are both likely to convert and fit within your business model, budget, and timeline?

  • Invest in lead building. Sounds obvious, right? But for many small residential contractors, it’s a vital leap to make to go from part-time handyman to full-scale business owner. Top remodeling businesses dedicate almost 60% of their earnings, on average, to winning new business, so if you want to play with the big boys, you’re going to have to spend some money (and time!) creating a lead generation strategy.
  • Make yourself available. These days, you can’t play the field without social media profiles, a website, and a quick way to be contacted. And that’s not just when it comes to the dating scene. For quality connections, you need a high-ranking website with relevant content and contact information and forms. You’ll also want an active social media presence and profiles on social review sites like Google and Yelp. Make it easier for leads to come to you.
  • Learn to market your brand. You’re probably enjoy the hands-on part of your business more than you do marketing, but these days, it’s virtually impossible to grow your business without some form of marketing. Just what form that takes depends on your market and your budget, but whether it’s an ad on Facebook or a direct mailing program, marketing is a sure way to attract new admirers.
  • Do your homework. Every seasoned contractor has a story about lead generating services. There are the ones that send out cold, dead leads and the ones who bill you dearly for pretty poor service. Forget those guys. What you need is someone who can link you directly with clients in need, quickly. Go for a service with a sterling reputation and a full call center that can connect you with leads quickly.

Business people greeting and handshake

#RelationshipGoals: Turning First-time Clients into Repeat Customers

Of course, a match and a message does not a relationship equal. Similarly, getting those regular, repeat customers takes some hard work—and no less trust, either.

  • It’s all about communication. Ghosting your customers is no way to ensure that sparks fly (and checkbooks fly open!). Always return calls quickly and follow up with customers if you feel like something might have been lost in translation. You’d be surprised how often customers report that a contractor left them hanging or cut off communication entirely. Don’t be that guy. Return your clients’ calls!
  • And even more communication. Miscommunication is the number one cause of failed relationships and failed projects. Part of expert contracting is managing expectations. Don’t promise your clients the world—tell them in very explicit terms what contractors can and cannot handle. Give them a realistic schedule and put it all in writing. There’s truth in the old sales adage, “underpromise and overdeliver,” so try to wow them with your service, not an impressive estimate.
  • Follow your gut. Ever been on a date where you felt like something just didn’t click? Some clients are just difficult, and it’s okay to turn down a job (or offer a premium bid) if you think they might become a problem. Signs of pending issues might be a client who’s “talked to seven different contractors,” or one who thinks your job is simple and balks at the cost of the project. Trust your instincts on this one and keep those nightmare clients out of your project timelines.
  • Sweeten the deal for repeat customers. You can spend your whole life looking for “the one,” but if you’re looking for that special somebody to fill your next project slot, you don’t exactly have all the time in the world. Most contractors offer a small discount for returning customers, say between 5% to 15%. And some will provide touch ups, service visits and other freebies for customers who they’ve come to count on—and maybe even a small “finders fee” for ones who send you new referrals. Make it worth their while to get to know you, and you may just find yourself knee deep in repeat customers!

We can’t say these tips will help you all that much with your love life, but hey, being the owner of a healthy, growing business can’t hurt, right?

In a Pretty Little Hilltop Town in Italy, a Gruesome Murder and a Right Wing Shooter Gunning Down Refugees

Luca Train ANSA/AP

ROME—Luca Traini, 28, wrapped an Italian flag around his neck, grabbed his Glock and got into his black Alfa Romeo 147 with one apparent motive: to shoot African migrants.

He then drove street to street around the small town of Macerata, shooting five men and one woman, injuring two seriously, before police were able to stop the shooting spree in front of the town’s monument to fallen soldiers. There, he then got out of his car, gave the Fascist salute and admitted to the crime, say police.

Traini, a muscled-up sometime boxer who ran for a local political post under the banner of Italy’s far-right Northern League party in 2017, had told his friends at the gym a day earlier, “I have a pistol and I’m not afraid to use it,” according to local Italian media reports.

Dolly Parton is so excited that Adele dressed up as her, and this is right as rain

Halloween may be several months from now, but that didn’t stop Grammy winner Adele from paying homage to her musical hero, Dolly Parton, by dressing up as her. Now, if there’s anything we know about Adele, aside from her stellar pipes, it’s that she is the queen of dressing up. So when she got all decked out in a pink embellished pantsuit and blonde wig to replicate Parton’s Jolene-era style, we weren’t surprised that she pulled it the H-E-double-hockey-sticks off!

“The effortless queen of song, Dolly Parton! We love you! We wish we could possess an ounce of your ability. You were the hero of our night! A hero of my life. I’ll always love you X,” Adele wrote on Instagram.

And guess who fangirl-ed? You know, aside from loads of fans? None other than Dolly Parton herself! The country icon took to Twitter with a video expressing her heartfelt appreciation, along with the caption, “@Adele you’re so fabulous! I will always love you! 💗

“Adele… likes me?!” she said. “I was knocked out. I was so honored. I was so flattered. I loved your outfit. I thought that was great. I think I had an outfit just like it back in the day. In fact, I thought that was a picture of me back in the day.”

Same here! Like, is this Adele, or Dolly?

We really can’t tell.

This isn’t the first time Parton has made Adele feel her love. In her song “Head Over High Heels,” she croons about “painting my eyes like Adele.”

Now that the two have publicly expressed their love for one another, is it too much to ask for a duet? Adele and Dolly, if you’re reading this, we’ll be waiting.

President Trump Is Having an Affair ‘Right Now,’ Michael Wolff Tells Bill Maher

HBO

The last time we saw Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time, he was defending his friend Al Franken and condemning his ideological enemy Roy Moore. Three months later, neither man is serving in the U.S. Senate and the government is on the verge of a possible shutdown.

As the Senate began to vote on a continuing resolution to keep the government open, Maher kicked things off by wishing his audience a happy new year, or as he called 2018, “the year of the shithole.” The host summed up Trump’s immigration position with one question: “Why can’t we do immigration more like the way I got Melania, by using a catalogue?”

But the main event of Maher’s first show back came in the form of a sit-down with Michael Wolff, author of Fire and Fury, the book that managed to make Trump’s White House even more chaotic during the first few weeks of the new year.

How to Get the Right Hat For Your Face Shape & Body Type

As you can imagine, people have all kinds of different heads and head shapes with sizes and unique features. When we dress, we always try to highlight the attractive features and flatter or improve the look of the areas that are not so advantageous.

It’s the same thing with hats; not every hat is suited to every face shape and body type. Sadly, this kind of knowledge has vanished from societies and even at the hat store, often, they won’t be able to tell you about it.

How Do I Know About It? I have vintage hat books and magazines, and I went through them and saw great discussions of hat retailers, and so I’m going to share all that knowledge with you.

Hats For Larger Gentlemen

If you have a small hat like with a not so wide crown and a very short brim, it makes the person look automatically bigger; so that’s something you should always avoid. On the other hand, a larger hat makes everything more proportional, more suitable, and the wearer doesn’t look oversized.

The same is true for the hat band. Ideally, you go with something quite wide that has a very low contrast to the hat, in the same color. You want to choose a crown that is not too high but more of a medium height with a pinch not so much in the middle because you want to avoid a pointy look.

You much either want to go for a little pinch more towards the sides that is not too accentuated because then it’s a more harmonious look with your fuller body.

If you’re a bigger gentleman and you want to snap your brim down, that’s okay but rather than having just a slight snap, try to snap it all the way down and get a really deep snap, that way it suits your silhouette more. The brim should be rather wide, at least two and a half inches which is about six and a quarter centimeters.

Fedoras are a great hat for larger men, and so are Homburg hats with a certain size. As I said, choose the hat band ideally in a color very similar to your head, so there’s a low contrast.

Hats For Short & Slim Gentlemen

If you’re shorter, you’ll always benefit from wearing a hat because it elongates your body and makes you look taller. Rather than having a rather wide crown, it pays to have it pinched to a point because it just flatters your short silhouette more. Also, rather than going with a tone in tone hat band, it pays to switch it up for something that’s contrasting.

A pointed pinch is the way to go

A pointed pinch is the way to go

If you’re shorter, you always want to avoid to have your brim snapped and much rather have it face up; the simple reason for this is when a viewer looks at you, and your brim is curled up or sideways, it gives the perception of elevation and height which is exactly what you want. Also, rather than going with wide-brimmed hats, it pays to go with something shorter.

Again, pinch on top works and the higher the crown, the better. Ideally, you want a brim that is less than 2 inches or 5 cm, however, if it gets too short, and the crown gets too low, you may appear like a boy so always try to go for that high crown and slim curl up brim.

If you take a big hat with a wide brim and a taller crown, it makes the wearer even smaller which is something you always want to avoid.

Hats For Tall & Thin Gentlemen

Ideally, you don’t want to accentuate your height even more which means don’t go for a high crown. Instead, go for medium to low crowns. Also, you want to opt for a contrasting hat band because it visually separates the top part of the hat from the bottom part and so overall, it makes you look shorter than you are. Of course, you don’t look short, but it looks more harmonious on your hat.

The brim should be about 2 inches or 5 cm wide and you want to step it down. Also, rather than wearing your hat straight, it can pay to simply tilt it to one side for a more elegant look that is more harmonious and proportional.

In a nutshell, if you are tall and slim, you should avoid tall crowns and matching hat bands. Instead, go with something contrasting. Likewise, do not wear a short-brimmed hat that is curled up because it makes you look taller. Instead, go for a somewhat wider snap brim hat that is more appropriate and that little tilt just helps to tie it all together.

Facial Features To Consider When Choosing A Hat

A snapped down hat for men with bigger noses

A snapped down hat for men with more prominent noses

Prominent Nose

If you have a big nose, the most important thing is the width of the brim. You want something that is at least as wide as your nose so usually about 2 and a half inches or more. If you go with a custom hat, you may even decide to have a brim that is wider in the front than in the back. If you get something off the rack, that is not an option you have.

Rather than having it curled up, you want to snap it down. Rather than going for a very pointy pinch, go for something that’s a little wider. Slim brims that are snapped up or just slightly snapped down are your enemy because they will just accentuate the size of your nose.

If you have a receding chin, avoid a full crown

If you have a receding chin, avoid a full crown

Receding Chin

If you have a receding chin, go with hats that are not too extreme. A hat can’t help to make the chin disappear, but it can help to level everything and make it look harmonious.

So that means, opt for a hat with a medium crown and a slight pinch that is not too pointy but also not round. Go for a medium wide brim that is slightly snapped to the front.

Again, it’s very flattering to tilt the hat slightly to one side. Make sure to avoid a big hat and a full crown because that will just highlight your receding chin, likewise, don’t snap your hat too much because it’s not an advantageous look for you.

If you have chiseled features, skip the tilt

If you have chiseled features, skip the tilt

Chiseled Features

Now if you have chiseled features, you want a hat with a slight pinch on the crown that is not too small and you want a nice deep snap. It’s definitely best to not tilt your hat but keep it straight so everything looks more proportional.

In order not to highlight your chiseled features, I urge you to stay away from a very tall crown or a very slim brim.

Slim brims are unflattering for round faces

Slim brims are unflattering for round faces

Round Face

Similar to those who have a stronger built, it pays to go with something that is not too slim. Regarding crown height, go with something medium and a matching headband that is not too small.

A larger brim works better for you so don’t get anything under 2 inches or 5 centimeters, I’d even go to at least two and a half inches or six and a quarter cm.

If you like to snap your brim, the fedora hat is the right choice. Otherwise, you can also go with a Homburg hat. If you’re a man with a round face, avoid getting hats that are too small.

You don’t want something that has a pointy crown, and you also don’t want to have a very slim brim that is not snapped down all the way; just makes you look goofy and disproportionately large.

Small and lifted brims only highlight your protruding ears more

Small and lifted brims only highlight your protruding ears more

Protruding Ears

Now if you have protruding ears, it’s very important that you have a wider brim that is snapped down and not snapped up. The brim is important because it doesn’t highlight the size of your ears or the shape, but it rather helps to cover them up. Opt for a wider crown that is not too pointy, although a little point is alright.

Also, go with a wide hat band that’s ideally somewhat contrasting because of your ears, it pays to not just snap down the hat in the front but also in the back. If you have protruding ears, you want to avoid small hats with shorter brims and anything that is pointed up.

Because of that, a Homburg hat is not the right hat for you because it’s curved up and it just highlights your ears and it just stands out and it’s just not a flattering look. The most important thing is that you the wide brim is always snapped down.

What Hat Work with your face and body type - Infographic

What Hat Work with your face and body type – Infographic

If You Get Conflicting Information, Don’t Get Confused!

First of all, I suggest you go with the facial features first because the head is closest to the face. Next up, look at your body type; for example, if your face shape calls for a whole crown but you’re also a slim and tall man, maybe bring the crown height down, so it doesn’t accentuate your height even further.

Also, maybe go with a contrasting hat band, so it visually separates the top part from the hat in the bottom which makes it look shorter.

Hats For A Big Head

Ideally, you want something that is proportional to your size so don’t go with something too small, but rather with a nice sized hat and with a nice pinch on top. You also want to go with a headband that’s not too wide but also not too slim, you can have it slightly snapped down in the front and snapped up in the back. It’s always good to tilt the hat to the side slightly, just makes it look more elegant. Same is true for snapping up the front part of the brim, makes your head even look bigger.

So if you have a bigger head, avoid a wide crown, avoid a large contrasting headband, because they’re both things that make your head look even larger. Overall, it really pays to experiment with different hat shapes which are most easily done at a hat store because there; you get the full selection.  If you buy online, they may look great in the picture but it may not be great on your head.

Personally, I think it’s okay to have a range of different hats for different purposes, in slightly different shapes, because depending on the outfit you have, the hat can also have a different appearance and impression on others. The good thing is if you follow these rules, you will end up with a hat that flatters your face and your body and you can focus on things like the edge finishing, or the color, or maybe the material.

What’s your go-to hat? Now that you know the rules, have you considered switching to a different hat for a change?

Get Your Mind Right: The Budgetnista Talks Tips For Increasing Your Net Worth

Ready to increase your net worth this year? Believe it or not, improving your finances and building wealth is more about mastering your mindset than anything else. To help you get your mind right, we tapped Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche, the award-winning founder of the Live Richer Challenge and leader of Dream Catchers, a massive group of people who are collectively working toward a better financial life together. In 2014, she initially launched the Live Richer Challenge with a focus on savings. Since then, the challenge has progressed from savings to credit and currently, the 2018 edition focuses on net worth. Below she details a few money mindset tips to boost your income as well as your wealth.

What are three mindset shifts people need to make when it comes to increasing their savings, improving their credit, and increasing their net worth?

  • The mindset shift for saving – Many people think of savings as missing out. But to save effectively, you have to switch that mindset from saving is depriving yourself to saving is a reward. Meaning, if you save, you can have more of the things you want.

  • The mindset for credit – You have to shift to one of empowerment. People think credit is something that you don’t have control over or once you make a mistake, that’s it, and that is not true. Credit is simply a series of rules; and if you know the rules, you can abide by them, and you can even tweak them to your benefit. Credit is actually one of the easiest things to fix. Make the shift to learning the rules so you can play a different game. Shift your mindset to empowerment and knowledge when it comes to credit.

  • The mindset for net worth – Shift away from this idea that more is more. True wealth is not just about income because your net worth is how much you own minus how much owe. So let’s just say you own a million dollars’ worth of things (woohoo you’re rich!): NO. If you owe $ 2 million, you have a net worth of $ 1 million minus $ 2 million, which is negative $ 1 million.

Make a shift that more is not more and that your net worth is truly about balance. Yes, we all want to earn more, but we also have to take care of what you have because it is earn versus owing.

A Guide to Selecting the Right Garage Heater for Your Home

Whether you’re hoping to use your garage for some mid-winter carpentry projects or as another place to work out when bad weather strikes, you’ll probably find the experience a lot happier if you have some heat in the space. And that means wading through a whole lot of options! Portable or fixed? Electric, propane, kerosene, diesel or solar? Forced-air, convection or radiation? The amount of variety out there is truly dizzying.

To help, we’ve created a “keep it simple” guide to garage heating basics. Below, we’ll touch on the different factors you need to weigh when you’re picking out heaters. And we’ll run over the types that work best for garages. Basically, it’s the fastest route to a more comfortable garage this winter.

tools hanging in a home garage

Portable or Not?

The first thing you need to decide is whether or not to go portable. Mobile space heaters are simple to install—many simply need to be plugged in. Unfortunately, floor-level space heaters are also not as safe. All those cords present a real tripping hazard in a garage, where you’re likely working with lots of tools. And that may cause fires and injury if the heater is accidentally tipped over.

On the other hand, portable space heaters cost a lot less. Mounted forced air units could run you as much as $ 1,000 apiece, but you can find quality portable heaters for less than $ 100. For professional-grade units, portable forced-air shop heaters—often known as salamander heaters—can be bought for between $ 100 to $ 200.

In the end, the decision usually comes down to how often you use your garage, as well as its size. Portable space heaters make more sense for casual garage-users, whereas a mounted forced-air system is better if you’re out there every day.

Types of Heaters

There’s also the matter of the heat source itself. Heaters can be powered by electricity or solar heat. They can also be fueled with some sort of gas, like natural gas, propane, kerosene, or diesel.

Combustion heaters like these latter types are typically more powerful and efficient than electric and solar heaters. But they must be used with care. Otherwise, the results could be tragic, since fuels are highly flammable.

Additionally, some products may not be suitable for insulated indoor spaces because they could generate fumes, carbon monoxide, and water vapor. Typically, “suitable for indoor use” means they have some sort of ducting system that directs fumes outdoors.

Halogen or electric heater on wooden floor

Forced-air, Infrared/Radiant, and Convection Heat: What’s the Difference

Beyond fuel source, you’ll also need to consider how the unit distributes heat. Here’s a summary of the differences:

  • Forced-air: Forced-air systems contain an internal fan that blasts hot air into the surrounding area. This makes them a lot more powerful than your average electric space heater. But they may stir up dust and sawdust as well. Some forced-air systems also rely on a secondary combustible fuel source, too.
  • Infrared or Radiant: Infrared and radiant units essentially allow heat to radiate outwards from the source, similar to a fireplace or campfire. They work best in small spaces because they’re usually not very powerful.
  • Convection: Convection heaters are designed to move air currents using the power of convection—aka, the physical principle that hot air rises and cool air sinks. Cold air beneath the unit is drawn over the heating source and then pushed out of the unit. Once it cools again, it cycles back through the unit. This process makes convection heaters much safer and efficient than other heaters.

Size and Power

Certain types of heating systems are naturally more powerful than others. But the size of your unit and its capacity will ultimately determine how warm your garage gets. All heaters list their heat capacity in British thermal units (BTUs).

But bigger doesn’t always necessarily mean better in this case. If you have a very small workspace, the average residential central heating capacity of 30,000 or 45,000 BTUs is going to be too powerful. You don’t want to be sweating over your power tools, after all.

To decide on the right capacity, you can manually size the heater using the garage square footage, ceiling height, and insulation. Or you can simply refer to manufacturer’s guidelines. Modern heaters typically do these calculations for you. So they’ll tell you how many square feet you can expect to reliably heat, given an eight-foot ceiling height—the standard for most garages.

Now that you know the basics of garage heating, you’re ready to go forth and conquer that new woodworking project with confidence—or at least without stiff, frozen fingers!

Why You Need A Side Hustle Right Now!

First, let’s be clear on what a side hustle is:

A “side hustle” is additional income that is separate from your paycheck. It’s not a part-time job, it is something you have created, and it can be hugely gratifying. I have always recommended side hustles or multiple streams of income. I call it “financial protection.” A side hustle helps you build confidence and security, especially if you’ve always been an employee and have never worked for yourself. Even a small amount of extra income feels great because you made it happen.

Why you need your own side hustle

A side hustle can give you a level of financial insulation if you were to lose your job or become sick and cannot work your full-time job. A side hustle can be an online pursuit such as editing manuscripts and résumés, being a virtual assistant, or making money from a blog. So if you were to become unemployed, you would still have money coming in and that would enable you to continue to pay your bills.

People often wonder how to save more money; a side hustle can help you with that. If, after you pay all of your bills, there is nothing left, you need a side hustle. Living paycheck to paycheck leaves you financially vulnerable (most people don’t have enough money in savings to handle an emergency). It is important to build up money in a savings account and an emergency savings account for the “what ifs” that can happen.

If there is something that you are truly passionate about or an area you want to explore, you can try it out through a side hustle. Sometimes a 9-to-5 is just a 9-to-5 and you may be harboring a desire to try something else. This is the time to do it and with a lot less risk.

A side hustle will bring more happiness and flexibility to your life. When I first started out as a financial writer and expert, I was writing on the side, but every time I got paid for my work and for something I truly wanted to do, I was elated! I was also able to save this money which increased my financial security. The feeling that you get from creating something of your own and being successful at it cannot be beat!

5 Things the Star Wars Holiday Special Got Right

The notorious “Star Wars Holiday Special” was so bad that it has only aired once on TV. Despite the special never being released on video, there are still some rare copies around. Even George Lucas himself has said, “If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it.”

However, despite the show’s infamy, there are five things that the Holiday Special did get right, and we count them down here.

All Those Cameos

No matter what anyone says about how pointless all the cameos were in the Holiday Special, it’s always fun seeing your favorite celebrities make a surprise appearance in a show or movie. And when they get a whole storyline to themselves, well then that’s really something special.

One of the best cameo storylines in the Holiday Special showcases Harvey Korman from The Carol Burnett Show, and his attempts to woo Bea Arthur who plays a bartender in the Mos Eisley Cantina (Bonus points for bringing back one of the most iconic sets from the Original Trilogy).

When the rowdy patrons of the cantina refuse to obey a planet-wide curfew imposed by the Galactic Empire, Bea resorts to singing the song “Goodnight, But Not Goodbye,” which causes them to waltz out the door.

Chewbacca’s Family

More Wookiees is always a good thing, especially when they are related to the most iconic Wookiee of them all. While the scenes involving Itchy (Chewie’s dad), Lumpy (Chewie’s son), and Malla (Chewie’s wife) may be a little weird (like, why these Wookiees wearing snuggies and walking in outer space?) we can all agree that seeing more of Chewbacca’s background is definitely welcome. After all, when compared to his fellow human Rebels, we know next to nothing about the furred giant.

The Holiday Special also treated fans to the first ever appearance of the Wookiee home-planet Kashyyyk. After all, we still haven’t seen Han Solo’s Corellia nor Leia’s Alderaan.

Leia Singing

It’s always great when one of your favorite actors reveals a secret talent, and this scene of Carrie Fisher singing is no exception. It’s a special treat in a film with plenty of mistakes, and it truly makes the Holiday Special noteworthy as one of the rare moments we see Carrie break out into song on film. We give this scene bonus points for Harrison Ford’s reaction 30 seconds in. Despite the fact that this scene came out of nowhere, we can forgive Carrie as we can bet she was just as confused as the rest of us.

Boba Fett

Considered by many to be the only watchable moment from the entire Holiday Special, this cartoon gives us our first introduction to the famed bounty hunter, Boba Fett. When Luke and Han contract a mysterious virus, Boba Fett teams up with Chewie to find the cure. However, the short takes a dark turn when it is revealed Boba Fett is secretly working with Darth Vader to capture the Rebels.

While it’s significance in the overarching universe of Star Wars is minimal, the short cartoon is one of the only parts of the Special with a coherent plot. Seeing Darth Vader cross paths with Luke, and possibly the greatest bounty hunter in the galaxy take shots at the Rebels are just two reasons why people are still watching this cartoon nearly 40 years later.

Another Music Cameo

When Stormtroopers raid Chewie’s home, the Rebels turn to music to distract the invaders. And strangely, it works. Although, like most things, it doesn’t make much sense in the context of the Holiday Special (why are the Stormtroopers even raiding Chewie’s home?!), this goofy moment veils a surprise cameo by ’70s rock group Jefferson Starship, with this catchy tune providing a memorable moment in a Special most seek to forget.
