Opening Round of Billabong Pipe Masters – World Title Race is Heating Up

BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu, Hawaii/USA (Monday, December 11, 2017) – The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the final stop on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the third gem of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (VTCS), kicked off today with incredible Pipeline barrels for the opening round of competition. The world’s best surfers lit up the beach in the first nine heats of Round 1 in solid eight-to-ten foot (2.4 – 3+ metre) conditions at the world-famous Banzai Pipeline.

Current No. 1 on the Jeep Leaderboard John John Florence (HAW) was the first surfer in Heat 6 to post a score. With cheers from the beach, Florence started his world title campaign and quickly built his scoreline to a solid 13.50 (out of a possible 20) to take top position over Pipe Invitational winner Dusty Payne (HAW) and Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas (BRA). Wearing the Jeep Leader Jersey, Florence looked confident and in rhythm at his home break and kept busy throughout the 30-minute match-up to secure his place in Round 3 and move one step closer to defending his World Title.

“I feel like a little kid again doing this event, just getting to surf Pipe with no one out,” said Florence. “I was just getting so many waves like, ‘This one might barrel!’ I like it when it’s like this, it changes it up, a peak here and peak there, you can kind of sneak underneath ones. It makes it really fun and it makes it interesting because you can get that one random, really crazy one.The support here makes me even more psyched. Just coming down the beach earlier and everyone screaming — it just makes me more excited. Coming into Pipe this year is a lot different than last year because last year I felt more relaxed having the title already. So this year is a little different preparation.”

WSL Title contender Jordy Smith (ZAF) was one of the standout performers of Round 1 and claimed a commanding win over Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Ethan Ewing (AUS) in Heat 4. An excellent 8.67 combined with a 7.90 put the World No. 3 firmly in the lead. Durbidge mounted a comeback with less than five minutes remaining but it wasn’t enough and Smith sailed through to Round 3.

“I think the noise is pretty quiet,” said Smith. “I don’t really get too deep into the pressure and quite frankly it really boils down to those two guys (Florence and Medina) losing out early, but you never know. If they wobble then I’ll put my head down and give it a go.”

Conner Coffin (USA), who currently sits at No. 21 on the Jeep Leaderboard right on the requalification bubble, needs a strong result to solidify his place on the CT in 2018. Coffin got his campaign off to a good start today with a Round 1 win over WSL title contender Julian Wilson (AUS) and Stu Kennedy (AUS). Wilson, current world No. 4, suffered an interference penalty that put him out of contention, while an injured Kennedy wasn’t able to get out from under competitors. Wilson, 2014 Billabong Pipe Master, who could claim his maiden world title with an event win, is relegated to elimination Round 2 where he will face the newly crowned WSL Hawaii/Tahiti Nui Regional Champion Benji Brand (HAW).

Coffin is riding high after he took the victory at Sunset Beach for the Vans World Cup, event no. 2 of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. “It’s definitely really nice to win especially when you’re right on the requalifying bubble and last place sucks, but I’m not thinking about that when I’m out in the water,” he said. “It’d be huge to win the Vans Triple Crown, so many of my favorite surfers have won the Triple Crown and Hawaii is my favorite place to compete in the whole world, so to get a win at Sunset was unreal. My family came over here now and we’re all just hanging at the house.”

Wildcard and Pipe Invitational runner-up Brand took an early lead over Brazilians Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Miguel Pupo (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 5. Pupo moved up into second place with a near-perfect 9.93, the highest single-wave score of the event so far, for a late takeoff into a cavernous Pipeline barrel and narrow exit.

“I was just happy to get a sick wave,” said Pupo. “I went out there looking for Backdoor and ended up just surfing Pipe waves, which is kind of funny. Always when you get a good score everyone knows you need to back it up straight away. I was trying to do that but there’s not many opportunities out there. I kind of fell, had a couple mistakes, but finally got that one at the end.”

WSL title contender and No. 2 on the Jeep Leaderboard Medina also put on the pressure with an excellent 8.50. In the end it was Pupo, who is battling for requalification, who stole the win to directly advance to Round 3 with a 4.90 during the final exchange, sending Medina and Brand to elimination Round 2.

“The pressure for requalification is through the roof right now,” continued Pupo. “But I have my family with me and every time I see my little girl, the pressure goes away and I’m only thinking about her and how happy she is to be in Hawaii, and my wife too, and all the pressure goes away somehow. When I got out there I was just trying to do my best. I wanted Gabby (Medina) to keep going in the event to win the title, but I had to do my job to keep my job for next year. I think all the guys in front of me made it so it’s a good first round but still a lot of steps to go.”

11X WSL Champion and 7X Billabong Pipe Master Kelly Slater (USA) made a triumphant return to competition today, wearing the jersey for the first time since July when he injured his foot in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

“I give the foot about a 65 percent,” commented Slater. “I’ve missed competition but after so many years of nonstop day in, day out, week in and and week out, it’s been kind of nice to have a few months off. It’s nice to get back, but it’s nice to get away from something that you love and get back and appreciate it.”

2010 Pipe Master Jeremy Flores (FRA) opened the day with a win over Jadson Andre (BRA)and Matt Wilkinson (AUS) in Round 1. The lower-scoring heat saw Flores post a 10.17 combined score for the win and the opportunity to skip straight to Round 3.

“No one knew what to expect in that heat,” said Flores. “When there’s such a big event coming up with all the scenarios and stuff, there’s so much hype around the event. I’m stoked, we got here today and the waves are pumping. So I didn’t go surfing this morning. I was super excited, but I didn’t want to get too excited and lose energy. It wasn’t a great heat, I wish I got some of those bombs. I’m stoked to get a win.”

Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau (HAW) used his home court advantage to take down competitors Filipe Toledo (BRA) and Michel Bourez (PYF) in Heat 9, the final matchup of the day, with a combined two-wave score of 10.50.

“I’m just super happy to be home and competing in front of my home crowd and get my first Round One win, I’m stoked,” said Lau. “This is the first time I’ve done a contest where I don’t have to think about anything else, just surf and show up and enjoy being in the event and performing in front of a home crowd. So that’s all I’m thinking about. I just want to put on a good performance and represent.”

The event was put on standby after Heat 9 when the winds shifted onshore and a call was made at 2:00 p.m. HST to call the competition off for the day. Event organizers will reconvene at 7:30 a.m. HST tomorrow to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Billabong Pipe Masters, are calling for:

Strong, but fading, NNW swell prevails Monday with light wind early in the day; we should see some good waves at Backdoor.  A new NW swell will build Tuesday afternoon and peak on Wednesday with XXL size surf washing Pipe out (along with onshore N wind). Thursday and Friday will see a decreasing trend in swell with strong NE trades. A mid-size NW swell looks possible for the 17th-18th (Sun-Mon) with at least a chance for light wind.

The event will be broadcast LIVE via WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL app and on Facebook LIVE via the WSL’s Facebook page. Also check local listings for coverage on CBS Sports Network in the U.S., the Spectrum SURF Channel in Hawaii, Fox Sports in Australia, ESPN in Brazil, Sky NZ in New Zealand, SFR Sports in France and Portugal, Sport TV in Portugal and the EDGEsport Network.

Qualcomm Apple patent lawsuits

Qualcomm has filed three new patent infringment claims against Apple in US District Court, bringing the total to 16. That doesn’t include a dispute Qualcomm is filing with the US International Trade Commission, which seeks a ban on importing some iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus models.

ZDNet reports that the patents in question include power-management chips and camera autofocus systems, two areas where Apple is reportedly investing heavily in the chip-design process.

Postcard Day For Men’s Round Three at Taiwan Open World Longboard Championship

Jinzun Harbour,  Taitung/Taiwan  (Tuesday, November 25, 2017) –  On a beautiful sunny day at Jinzun Harbour the 2017 Taiwan Open World Longboard Championships has continued with the completion of Men’s Round Three. It’s been ‘Groundhog Day’ here at Jinzun with perfectly clean 3-to-4 foot waves continuing throughout the event.

In his 6 years of competing at the Longboard Championship Tour (LCT), young Sunshine Coaster Nic Jones (AUS) has been unable to make it out of Round Three. On Day 3 of competition, Jones had a tough task ahead of him if he was to break his run of 13th place finishes when he came up against two times World Champion Piccolo Clemente (PER). Jones adapted to the conditions and criteria well, opting to surf on a traditional single fin and utilize time on the nose to find a 14.23 (out of a possible 20) heat total. Clemente failed to find a rhythm leaving Jones to progress to a guaranteed best finish on the LCT.

“I’m ecstatic right now – this is a special heat win form me and to have friends and family on the beach is amazing,” Jones said. “With the way the waves are at the moment I decided to surf a bigger board with a bit of extra weight in it and it was definitely the right choice. It was good to start the heat off strongly, but it was a nervous wait for the next, especially against a guy like Piccolo – he’s an amazing surfer. I finally found another score and am so stoked to make it into Round Three. My goal now is the Quarterfinals or better.”

It was an all Californian affair in Heat 4 of Round Three with Kevin Skvarna (USA) coming up against Cole Robbins (AUS). It was an exciting heat as the more traditional Skvarna sat on the left peak while Robbins kept to the rights. Robbins posted a 7.33 (out of possible 10) late in the heat to take the lead. Skvarna had a chance to answer back but fell and lost his board, one of the perils of surfing heats without a leash. Robbins was able to hang on for the win with a heat total of 14.66.

“That was a wild heat out there,” Robbins said, “We were sitting so wide away from each other it was hard to know if he was getting scores or not so it was super intense. I was going to surf a single fin but as the wind came up I decided a more performance board would be better in the wind. It allowed me to stay on the nose for a bit along with complete my turns which was good.”

Having finished runner-up on the LCT in 2009 and 2011, Hawaii’s Kai Sallas (HAW) is in the best position yet to take his first World Longboard Title. Sallas has been warming up at waves similar to Jinzun at home in Oahu to guarantee comfort in his quest to become Champion. He looked solid in Round Three posting the highest heat total of the round a 16.17.

“There’s a wave at home that is cross-shore like this and breaks in a similar way that I have been surfing more than usual in preparation for this event,” Sallas said. “This year is different for me as when I finished runner-up I was out of contention for the title so had no pressure. Now that I’m sitting in second there is more pressure but I’m feeling confident and ready for anything.”

Brazilian competitor Rodrigo Sphaier (BRA) put on a powerful performance in his Round Three heat attacking the lip and throwing buckets to post a heat total of 13.03 and overcome South Africa’s Matthew Moir (ZAF). Moir had an opportunity to overtake him late in the heat but couldn’t find the wave he needed to progress.

“That was a nervous heat for me,” Sphaier said. “Matthew is a really great competitor and hard to beat so it feels good to come out on top. The waves here are amazing, I have been warming up here all week and loving the conditions we have been getting.”

Frenchman Edouard Delpero (FRA) continued his good run at Jinzun Harbour progressing into Round Four with a strong win over Japanese competitor Shohei Akimoto (JPN). Delpero posted a heat total of 16.67 which was the highest of Men’s Round Three.

“I’m just trying to enjoy as much as possible and I’m lucky because I got good scores,” Delpero said. “The conditions are really tough out there.  I’m stoked with my surfing but I still don’t feel like I’m the guy to beat, because there is such a high level at this contest. I really like this region, I’ve been here twice already so I’m really enjoying my time here again.”

Want to Win the First Round of the Baseball Playoffs? Just Win Game One

The first round of the 2017 baseball playoffs got underway Thursday, with the Houston Astros defeating the Boston Red Sox 8-2 and the Cleveland Indians blanking the New York Yankees 4-0. The National League division series, which is the first of three playoff rounds, gets underway Friday evening.

This bodes well for the Astros and the Indians, because, ever since Major League Baseball instituted the best-of-five division series in 1995, 63 of the 88 contests have gone to whichever team won the first game. If history is any guide, this means the two winners have a 72 percent chance of advancing to the league championship series, which, like the World Series, is a best-of-seven contest.

The following graphic shows all 88 contests colored by whether the winner of the first game won the series (green) or eventually lost (red), with circles for first-game wins at home and squares for first-game wins away.

While both the Astros and the Indians had the home-field advantage, the data suggests this doesn’t make much difference compared to the “first-win advantage.” Of the 63 teams that won the first game and went on to win the series, 31 started the series as the visiting team. Major League Baseball has alternated between whether the fifth game of the series, if the teams are tied 2-2 after four games, returns to the team with the home field advantage (a “2-2-1” model) or reduces travel time by staying at the other team’s stadium, a “2-3” model.

Of course, all hope is not lost for Red Sox and Yankees fans. While a best-of-five model stacks the odds against the team that loses the first game, there are plenty of exceptions. In 1995, for example, the Mariners lost the first two games to the Yankees and, facing elimination as the series shifted from New York to Seattle, won three straight games at home to go on to the American League Championship Series, which they lost to the Indians even though they won the first game in the second round.

EDP Billabong Pro Cascais Round 4 Concludes In Stormy Conditions

WSL PRESS RELEASE

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais/Portugal (Tuesday, October 3, 2017) – The EDP Billabong Pro Cascais resumed after three consecutive lay days, at the back-up venue of Guincho. Solid surf in the six-to-eight foot range was on offer to resume the men’s Round Four remaining four heats.

Local favorite Frederico Morais (PRT), 25, took out the day’s opening bout with great surfing on his backhand, finding clean faces to lay down his signature power carves. The Portuguese superstar, whose heat has been postponed multiple times since the event last ran on Friday, managed to get his rhythm back as soon as the heat started and took an important win to advance into the man-on-man Round Five.

“We were really unlucky with the calls at Carcavelos cause the swell looked good for there but it kind of missed it in the end,” Morais explained. “So we came back to Guincho, which is a very beautiful beach, I love it! It was difficult today with all the whitewash coming through and the big sets you take on the head but I’m very used to surf it like this so it just felt like home.”

Willian Cardoso (BRA), 31, took a similar approach to riding the big walls of Guincho and let his power do the talking. World No. 30 Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) stayed in the heat with some nice hooks on his backhand, and Frenchman Maxime Huscenot despite nailing the biggest single move of the heat, unfortunately placed third.

Cardoso’s performance in Portugal could score him a seat amongst the world’s best surfers next season as with a lowest result of 650 points in his season tally, he’s guaranteed a minimum of 16,000 after Cascais.

“It was a hard heat to win against Leo and Maxime, both great surfers,” Cardoso said. “Both live in France and have a lot of experience in similar conditions, so I tried to do my own thing, catch a wave with some space for a good turn. I’ve been on tour for twelve years and somehow this season everything is working well for me, so I hope to make the finals here.”

Jesse Mendes (BRA), 24, can’t seem to do anything wrong this season and continued to demonstrate his total domination over the rest of the QS field, with another heat win and the day’s highest heat total at Guincho. While points are at this point of the season unimportant for the Brazilian who’s already secured a spot on the Championship Tour, every bit of experience will play in his favor in his rookie season in 2018.

“I’ve been trying to take my time and breathe in between everything, before a heat, during a heat, in between turns,” Mendes reflected. “It calms your nerves and avoids getting ahead or yourself. That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned this year, knowing how to be calm and patient.”

Former CT athlete Alejo Muniz (BRA), 27, took out the day’s last heat as conditions became unruly and gale-force winds began to tear apart the lineup. Muniz spent the first half of his heat completely lost at sea, not able to put a decent score on the board, but managed to come from behind and take out one of the last qualifying spots into Round Five.

“It’s an amazing feeling, I thought I had lost my heat,” Muniz admitted. “I couldn’t hear anything out there and no one was cheering from my crew so I didn’t know the result. I tried to get that last wave from Nat (Young) but he started as well so I really had no idea what would happen. I’ve lost in this round of the past QS10,000 events so I’m stoked to make it through.”

Conditions deteriorated to the point where contest officials had to call competition off for the rest of the day, cutting short hopes of running half of the fifth round today.

Competitors and event officials will reconvene tomorrow at the back-up site of Guincho and start either the women or men’s event at 7:30 a.m for a potential finals day.
