Samantha Bee: ‘Mommy and Me Jails’ Are Not the Answer

TBS

“If like most people you’ve been feeling a little uncomfortable this week with our new pre-K prisons, good news: The president has fixed it with the next worst thing,” Samantha Bee said at the top of her show Wednesday night.

“Yay, no more baby internment camps,” the Full Frontal host said after playing footage of President Trump signing his new executive order. “Just regular internment camps. Cool, that’s what we call a win in 2018!”

Bee, who was the first late-night host to fully take on Trump’s family separation policy, said she was happy that “theoretically these kids are going to stay with their parents,” but added, “Mommy and me jails are not a solution.” Instead of #keepfamiliestogether, she suggested activists should have been using “#keepfamiliestogetherbutnotinjailyoumonsterswhatiswrongwithyou.”

Jim Jefferies: Samantha Bee Should Have ‘Stuck to Her Guns’

Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast

SAN FRANCISCO—A few hours after Samantha Bee issued an “sincere apology” to Ivanka Trump for calling her a “feckless cunt” on her show this past week, The Jim Jefferies Show posted a video on Twitter with the message, “We’d like to sincerely apologize to all the people we’ve called c*nts on our show.”

In the montage, host Jim Jefferies can be seen using the “c-word” to describe Richard Nixon, James Comey and the entire country of France. He notably does not use it in reference to any women, let alone the daughter of the president. Perhaps that’s why he never drummed up the level of controversy Bee did this week when she used the word on TBS’ Full Frontal. Either that, or it’s because he’s Australian.

“The accent definitely does help,” Jefferies says backstage before his stand-up set at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest on Saturday. “It does roll off the tongue a little bit easier when I do it. Maybe it doesn’t have the connotations that it does in America.” He admits that in the U.S. it “seems to be a misogynistic term that’s meant to hurt” whereas in Britain, Australia and Ireland, it’s actually often used in a “nice way.” For instance, he might say of a friend, “This cunt’s alright.” But, he adds, “It’s not just Brits and Aussies, I think it’s OK for anyone to say that word.”

The difference between Roseanne Barr’s overt racism and Samantha Bee’s crude remark

The difference between Roseanne Barr’s overt racism and Samantha Bee’s crude remark

The difference between Roseanne Barr’s overt racism and Samantha Bee’s crude remark

Two days after Roseanne Barr went on a racist Twitter rant that resulted in the cancellation of her sitcom revival on ABC — a rant in which she compared former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett to an ape — comedian Samantha Bee is facing similar blowback from folks on the right. People are likening the insult that Bee aimed at Ivanka Trump — calling her a “feckless c—” during a segment of her TBS show Full Frontal — to Barr’s online comments. Many conservatives who are critical of ABC’s decision to fire Barr immediately demanded the cancellation of Bee’s show, and they weren’t alone. The White House released a scathing statement condemning Bee and calling for Time Warner and TBS to cancel Full Frontal.

Let’s be clear: there is a stark difference between Barr’s overt and reckless racism and Bee’s insensitive and crude remark.

Calling a Black person an ape is not the same thing as being crass towards one of the most privileged women in the world regarding inhumane policies in the White House where she is an “advisor.” Likening the two not only downplays the violent threat inherent in promoting racism, but also helps to normalize obvious bigotry and prejudice.

First, it is important to look at the noteable difference in the language used by Barr and Bee respectively. Barr, who has been known to spew racist and xenophobic rhetoric, shared a tweet that compared Jarrett, a Black woman, to an ape. In doing so, she invoked old and incredibly painful racial rhetoric that has been used to attack Black Americans for centuries. The “ape” slur strips people of their humanity and denies them their civil rights.

Bee, on the other hand, used a word the president himself has used to describe at least three different women, according to The Daily Beast. Though widely considered offensive in the United States, it has a neutral or even positive meaning in countries like Britain, New Zealand, and Australia. Bee’s insult also doesn’t have the same history of violence that ideology likening Black people to animals does — which is perhaps one of the clearest lines of separation between the Barr and Bee’s statements.

The false equivalency being drawn between Barr’s racism and Bee’s crudeness also ignores the difference between the people and groups being attacked.

In Barr’s tweet, a person of privilege — white, wealthy, celebrity — attacked not just one marginalized individual, but an entire marginalized population. By likening Jarett to an ape, she called upon centuries of racism and violence to malign an entire population of people. When Bee made her crass comment, she insulted one of the most powerful, most privileged, and most protected women in the world while attacking her silence around Trump’s immigration policies. Bee also leveled her attack at someone who is, like her, a white woman and a celebrity. The damage caused by each is vastly different: In Barr’s case, she further normalized racist rhetoric, whereas in Bee’s case, she hurt the First Daughter’s feelings — not the feelings of white women everywhere.

Despite these obvious differences, there is still a battle cry on the right demanding Bee’s head, or at least her show, on a silver platter — including the official White House statement calling for Full Frontal‘s cancellation. There are many people making the argument that if Barr can be “censored” for her Twitter comments, Bee should suffer the same consequences. This argument ignores one key fact: Barr was not, in fact, censored.

A private company choosing to fire an employee is not censorship. The White House and the President of the United States demanding a show’s cancellation because it disagrees with its content, however, is.

While there are plenty of people who want to make these separate and very different issues two sides of the same coin, they simply cannot be. Being racist and being crude are not the same thing, and trying to say they are normalizes bigotry. It’s dangerous.

‘I Crossed a Line.’ Samantha Bee Apologizes to Ivanka Trump for Profane Comment

Samantha Bee has apologized to Ivanka Trump in the midst of backlash over a controversial comment she made about the First Daughter on Wednesday’s episode of Full Frontal.

During a segment in which Bee juxtaposed a photo that Ivanka tweeted on Sunday showing her cuddling her toddler son Theodore with a U.S. immigration policy that allows border security officials to separate children from their parents if they are caught crossing over into the U.S., the late-night host referred to Ivanka by a crude euphemism for a female body part.

“Y’know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another: do something about your dad’s immigration policies, you feckless c—,” Bee said during the bit. “He listens to you. Put on something tight and low-cut and tell him to stop it.”

Bee issued an apology for the remark in a Thursday afternoon tweet that came hours after White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders condemned her words. “I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night,” Bee wrote. “It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”

TBS, Full Frontal‘s home network, then followed her statement up with an apology of its own. “Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night,” TBS tweeted. “Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

Psychologist Dr. Samantha on Overcoming Our ‘Internal Self-Image Problems’

Psychologist Dr. Samantha Madhosingh is the founder and CEO of ElevateHER, an organization serving women leaders by providing key strategies to rewire their brains, achieve mindset mastery, maximize communication and relationships, and ultimately create a legacy of lasting wealth.

Her cutting-edge, proprietary system is built on principles of neuroscience, human potential, positive psychology, cognitive therapy, leadership, and coaching to deliver fast, life-changing results.

(Dr. Samantha Madhosingh. Image: Jin Kim, Jin Kim Studio, Dallas)

A frequent media contributor and sought-after expert for both local and national media, “Dr. Samantha” as she is known, has appeared on broadcast TV and is the author of the books Strike it Happy! 101 Reflections to Revolutionize Your Life; the Strike it Happy! journal; and Magnify Your Brilliance: 5 Keys to a Powerful Life.

Black Enterprise caught up with Dr. Samantha to discuss neuroscience and human potential.

You’re a brain expert. Explain.

I’ve studied—quite extensively—about how the brain and mind work, as well as how each impact and influence behavior. I am also keenly interested in the mechanisms and processes of the brain that explain how and why people think and behave the way they do.

When you truly understand that the brain’s purpose, from both an evolutionary and biological perspective, is to keep you alive and safe, understanding why people behave the way they do is much easier. Our brain is conditioned by our interactions with everything and everyone in our environment. About 90% of our brain’s processing is unconscious and is influencing our actions without us even thinking about it. We develop biases and preferences because of who and what the brain thinks is safe. I teach my clients how their brain’s conditioning has led to their current biases, beliefs, and behavior patterns; how to unlearn the old conditioning; and how to prime their brain intentionally for what they want to achieve, how they want to be, and act.

What’s the connection between the brain and the study of metaphysics?

We create our reality by the meaning our brain forms from our experiences and the words we attach to them. It is from this narrative that our individual “stories” are created, and that we exist in life. Reality, then, is our brain’s interpretation of our physical experience. The very nature of our being is deeply spiritual and energetic, and yet even this is processed by our brain.

What critical factors do you think keep most people from reaching their true potential?

Most people have an internal self-image problem: Their deeply held beliefs about who they are and what they are capable of get in the way. This is the result of all the conditioning (and we all have been conditioned) they have received over the years. These internal limits, the point where their brain says, “This is what you deserve,” or “This is all you are capable of” function as sabotage, and in some way help them to “restore” balance. In other words, it helps them to maintain the status quo and allows the brain to rationalize that it is safe.

Share a challenge that you were able to overcome with your own brain—and an opportunity that you were able to harness by leveraging its power.

The biggest challenge I have had, and continue to have, is a depressed brain. At various periods in my life, I have succumbed to the damaging wiring and “lies” that my brain and mind have offered. Nevertheless, I have also learned how to create new neuropathways.  With lots of daily practice, I am able to prevent my brain from sliding me into deep darkness. If I listened to my depressed brain, I would not be a speaker, psychologist, writer, or mentor; because I would believe that I have nothing to offer. My own personal growth work is ongoing because our brains are like radars and are always seeking validating evidence for confirmation. The work I do both with my clients and personally continues to strengthen this muscle.

What’s your best advice to someone struggling with becoming their best self?

Get curious about your brain’s conditioning and pay closer attention to your thoughts and beliefs. If the language you are constantly using to describe yourself, your life, your work, your impact, your career is negative—then you will keep struggling. Reframe it. Focus on falling in love with and accepting who you are right now, even as you grow and evolve. You are beautifully perfect in all your imperfections. Stop focusing on what you perceive as “wrong” and start using all your gifts and strengths to your advantage.

Samantha Bee’s ‘In Memoriam’ For Roger Ailes And Bill O’Reilly Made Us Cry (Laughing)

Roger Ailes resigned from Fox News last summer, following allegations that he sexually harassed multiple female colleagues. Then last week, we heard the shocking news: Bill O’Reilly was no longer employed by Fox News, also in the wake of sexual harassment allegations.

Oof … sorry, just a little choked up right now.

Samantha Bee dedicated a segment during her Saturday “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” to Ailes and O’Reilly ― two media titans who were “taken from us far, far too late.”

Samantha Bee Visits The Alternate Universe Where Hillary Clinton Won

On Saturday, Samantha Bee closed out her “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” special “Man In The High Castle” style, alternate reality film projector and all.

“What a wonderful alternate 2017 it’s been!” says Bee from another world where Hillary Clinton is now president.

“The Patriots lost the Super Bowl, ‘Lemonade’ won Album Of The Year and every print of ‘La La Land’ spontaneously combusted.”

Unfortunately, Paul Ryan and the Republicans have already started impeachment proceedings, and Clinton’s presidency has inspired the first-ever protest seen from space: the Men’s March.

Sigh. Still, we have to assume a lot of the attendees at her star-studded event were thinking the same thing:
