BET Genius Talks: Secrets to Success from Yvonne Orji, T.I., Charles King, and More

BET recently wrapped up their 18th annual award show over the weekend and presented a series of Genius Talks that were knowledgeable, insightful, and some, downright funny. Peep the highlights below.

Charles King and Terry Crews

During the 60 seconds with a Genius segment sponsored by AT&T, Crews asks King, what advice do you have for a young actor who wants to get put on? “Hone your craft, whether you’re doing local theater, whether you’re studying at school with an acting coach, whether you’re shooting videos with your friends, practice, practice, practice, practice.”

Yvonne Orji and Jemele Hill

We tweeted this, and the numbers jumped so we know the folks at home were feelin’ it. Between Orji’s extreme comic relief, that woman is beyond funny, she said something that completely stood out and led to gasps from the audience, “Never let your talent or your gifts take you to a place that your character can’t keep you.”

Let that sink in.

Mona Scott-Young and Jemele Hill

Scott-Young’s major keys:

  • “The first step is visualizing what you want to accomplish and the next step is actually taking the step.”
  • “If you’re focused, diligent, committed and consistent and the talent is there, then (your success) is inevitable.”

Omari Hardwick and Jemele Hill

Sometimes the no, will get you to the yes.

Hill asked Hardwick, ‘During your lowest point, what was your big break?’ “It was either a backup of firefighting, then the day that I said no to the fire department, which I had passed all the tests to be admitted on, hours later after saying no to LA city fire department … I got a call that Spike Lee was gone be my first boss in life.”

T.I. and Jemele Hill

Stand your ground.

When Hill asked Tip about the Super Bowl coming to Atlanta, T.I.’s response was one for the records. “I have made a conscious decision not to support the NFL this year. I think there’s a violation of constitutional rights that’s being implemented to minority players who choose to have a peaceful silent protest.”

Enough said.

Roz Brooks Shares 5 Phenomenal Secrets from the C-Suite

Most of us hear words like taxation and either groan, panic, or doze off. But not Roslyn Brooks. This leader of PwC’s (PricewaterhouseCoopers) Government Regulatory Affairs & Public Policy office in Washington, DC, built her career in the firm’s tax practice, making a mighty impression even as a neophyte. More than a dozen years ago, Brooks leapt into the government and public policy arena where she continues to have high impact—and helps lead the world’s second-largest professional services firm.

How did she reach the top, and more importantly, how can you? Brooks wasn’t taxed by the question at all. She fired back with these tips:

5 Secrets from the C-suite

1. Don’t pick a lane—do you!

Brooks’ educational background demonstrates a passion for literature, science, and finance, as well as a refusal to pick just one. She holds a bachelor’s in English and Psychology from Stanford, a J.D. from the University of Michigan, and a master’s in taxation law.

2. Go with the flow.

By the time Brooks weathered the inherent transitions that came with the 1998 merger between accounting firms Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand, she had already shifted from a practice office to a technical office; from client service to internal firm service; and taken on assignments that required her to relocate from Detroit to New York to DC. In a global corporate universe driven by constant disruption, adaptability can be your most valuable skill. “My demonstrated ability to adapt to change has been instrumental to my success – and my sanity!” she says.

3. Do the extra credit.

Intellectual curiosity is an asset—use it! As a new associate tasked with preparing a tax return for a business with 10 subsidiaries, Brooks could have simply followed the template from the previous year. However, she wanted a detailed understanding of the numbers, even though that would take more time than the assigning partner had budgeted.

When he asked to meet with her, Brooks didn’t know what to expect. “He asked me to walk him through the return and questioned the rationale behind certain numbers,” she recalls. “When I was able to, he was surprised and wanted to know how I knew what I knew.”

After Brooks explained, that partner took an interest in her career development and became a much-valued sponsor. “Success takes more than just hard work and intellect,” she says. “It takes recognition, encouragement, and sponsorship. I don’t believe [he would have become my sponsor] if I simply had gotten it right but didn’t care to know why.”

4. Be a trailblazer.

Brooks didn’t set out to be one, but she didn’t blink when her consistent record of performance and leadership at PwC earned her a coveted place as the first black woman on the firm’s U.S. executive management team.

5. Stay ready, and stay hungry. No matter what you’ve achieved, you can always level up. It sometimes happens, however, that the higher we go, the more self-limiting we become. Picture the EVP who starts to coast, believing that the CEO slot is unattainable. Or the company founder who has a news-making exit and never starts another company, believing that lightning can’t strike twice.

“Once you obtain a promotion or hit a career milestone, it may be tempting to think, ‘I’m at a good place, I can relax,’” says Brooks. “This may be true especially as you juggle other commitments and interests that are important to you in life.” But fight the feeling, she insists, and stay focused on the biggest picture your imagination can concoct. “I think it’s just as important to keep your mind and eyes open to new opportunities that excite you. Stay ready and never give up on your own growth.”

Chinese Hackers Targeted Japanese Defense Firms for North Korean Secrets, Experts Say

Chinese hackers have targeted Japanese defense companies, possibly to get information on Tokyo’s policy toward resolving the North Korean nuclear impasse, according to cybersecurity firm FireEye Inc.

The attacks are suspected to come from a group known as APT10, a China-based espionage group that FireEye has been tracking since 2009. One of the lures used in a “spear-phishing” email attack was a defense lecture given by former head of UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura. Two attacks took place between September and October 2017.

“Lure content related to the defense industry suggests that a possible motive behind the intrusion attempt is gaining insider information on policy prescription to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue,” said Bryce Boland, chief technology officer for the Asia-Pacific region at FireEye.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs didn’t respond to a faxed request for comment Friday. After a similar FireEye report involving U.S. targets last month, ministry spokesman Lu Kang said that China opposed all kinds of cyber attacks.

The suspected attacks coincided with a dramatic escalation in tensions over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program as Kim Jong Un tested a hydrogen bomb and U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to “totally destroy” the country. The U.S. and Japan have been coordinating their diplomatic and military pressure campaigns against the country, and neighboring China is anxious to avoid a clash on its border.

Tensions have eased since the two Koreas started talking ahead of the Winter Olympics and Winter Olympics and Trump granted an unprecedented meeting with the North Korean leader. Earlier this month, the foreign ministers of China and Japan agreed to work closely to push the regime to surrender its nuclear weapons program, although Japanese officials continue to express skepticism about Kim’s willingness to make a deal.

For more on President Trump’s meeting with Kim Jung Un, watch Fortune’s video:

Multiple Attacks

The latest cyberattacks mirror other recent hacks with geopolitical overtones investigated by FireEye. Among the most recent, a wave of incursions on mainly U.S. engineering and defense companies linked to the South China Sea, where China’s claims for more than 80% of the water clash with five other nations. In 2016, the website of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party was attacked months after the party won elections, securing its leader Tsai Ing-wen the presidency.

“We believe APT10 is primarily tasked with collecting critical information in response to shifts in regional geopolitics and frequently targets organizations with long research and development cycles,” Boland said, citing firms in construction and engineering, aerospace and military, telecommunications and high-tech industries.

In an unusual development, the hackers inserted lines of text in the malware associated with the Japanese attacks mocking the security researchers. Such gems included, “I’m here waiting for u,” “POWERED BY APT632185,NORTH KOREA,” and “According to the analysis report, Some Japanese analysts have always been portrayed as a bit of joke.”

Also under attack since November 2017 have been Japanese healthcare companies. “China’s new push on pharmaceutical innovation as a national priority, along with rising cancer rates, will likely drive future espionage operations against the healthcare industry,” Boland said.

Mandiant, a unit of FireEye, alleged in 2013 that China’s military might have been behind a group that had hacked at least 141 companies worldwide since 2006. The U.S. issued indictments against five military officials who were purported to be members of that group.

Get Well Wednesday: Secrets To Aging Well

WHAT ARE THE SECRETS TO AGING WELL?

A major key to aging well is exercise of some type, not necessarily a gym, but housework or gardening for at least 45 mins a majority days of the week can be of benefit. New studies suggest adults that are not socially isolated – those with family or friends close by or other meaningful relationships like children, grandchildren etc. tend to do better than older adults who are socially isolated.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT CAN AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO AGE WELL?

Adults with chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, those who smoke or are morbidly obese BMI (Body Mass index) over 35.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AND DEMENTIA?

Alzheimer’s disease is a specific type of dementia and the most common kind in the United States. However, dementia can be caused by vascular reasons (e.g. stroke) or Parkinson-related dementia.

HOW CAN YOU DETERMINE DEMENTIA FROM NORMAL AGING AND FORGETFULNESS?

Dementia must involve both memory and decline in function. Examples would be impaired memory (repetitive questions, getting lost while driving etc.) and decline in one’s ability to balance a checkbook or suddenly cannot use electronic device or forgets how to bath or dress oneself.  Normal aging may involve occasional difficulty recalling names, places, etc. but likely with time can remember.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF DEMENTIA?

Getting loss while driving to a familiar spot. Love ones or friends noticing in a short time span that someone is asking repetitive questions. Someone who always managed the finances and all of sudden is bouncing checks.

WHEN SHOULD YOU HAVE YOUR LOVED ONE SCREENED FOR DEMENTIA?

If any of the signs above are noted, you should take the patient to primary care doctor or Geriatrician if one is in the area.

WHAT ARE SOME PREVENTATIVE OPTIONS FOR DEMENTIA?

Research studies only show two things that are preventive activities: (1) Exercise majority days of the week, at least 4 days, for at least 30 mins of aerobic resistance training has been shown to be protective. (2) According to one study, learning another language later in life can be protective from dementia.

Dr. Graham answers your aging questions on the next pages:

Can a person with uncontrolled diabetes reverse dementia?

Dementia once diagnosed is not reversible, but controlling ones diabetes is always good for one’s general health.

Does not getting enough sleep contribute to dementia?

Sleep is very important for brain health. I cannot necessarily cite a study that shows a direct link between not enough sleep and Dementia but getting adequate sleep is beneficial to the brain.

Morning, Doc. How early in age can Dementia be detected?

Dementia can be diagnosed as early as in ones 50’s. More common in the Mid 70s-80s.

Is there any research that links certain types of food to dementia?

No specific foods but evidence that a plant based diet can be beneficial for overall health.

My sister is showing signs. So geriatrician is the one to see?

A: If you cannot get your sister to a Geriatrician, a Primary care doctor( Family Medicine /Internal Medicine) could evaluate your sister.

Six Secrets From a Pro Photographer for Snapping Adorable Pix of Your Kids

Photos of your children on the Easter bunny’s lap seem precious in theory.

But what isn’t cute is waiting for what seems like forever in line at the mall, only to have one kid start screaming his head off and another to suddenly look paralyzed in fear in the presence of an oversized rabbit.

And then you still have to pay for a photo package.

Parents who want to save a few bucks on Easter photos might be better off just taking the shots themselves.

The Penny Hoarder’s director of photography, Sharon Steinmann, is the mother of a 2-year-old boy and a 5-month-old girl and knows all about the challenges of photographing little ones.

She shares the following tips that amateur photogs can use when it comes to taking pictures of their kids for any occasion.

Timing Is Everything

A mother photographs her son with an iPhone.
The Penny Hoarder director of photography Sharon Steinmann takes a photograph of her two-year-old son, Ezra Avila. Chris Zuppa/The Penny Hoarder.

Steinmann recommends parents photograph their children either at the beginning or the end of the day, time periods that photographers refer to as “the golden hour.”

“The worst time to photograph anybody is in the middle of the day,” she says. “Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., the sun is very high and directly above you in the sky, so you’re going to get shadows under their eyes and you’re going to get lots of hot spots, especially if they’re wearing spring clothing, which tends to be pastel and light colors.”

Hot spots are areas of a photo that are significantly brighter than the rest of the shot.

Another key precaution: Avoid scheduling the photo session during mealtimes or nap times.

Be Mindful of Clothing

When dressing your little ones in their Easter best for photos, don’t focus only on how adorable their outfits are.

Steinmann advises families to avoid fussy patterns — anything with stripes or intricate designs — because they may not translate well digitally.

“My piece of advice is always try to wear a solid color or a pattern that’s not too busy,” she says. “Another thing is avoid white shirts. They tend to be too bright and create a hot spot.”

Steinmann also recommends choosing comfortable clothing for your kids so they’re not squirming or looking irritated in the photos.

Location, Location, Location

A father and his toddler son walk around a lake in a city park.
City parks are a pretty, accessible and free place for taking portraits of young children. Chris Zuppa/The Penny Hoarder.

Steinmann says amateur photographers will take the best shots outdoors. She suggests taking photos at a park or botanical garden if your own backyard isn’t suitable for pictures.

When children are your subjects, Steinmann says, it’s important to plan everything in advance. Make sure you have picked out the perfect spot ahead of time and have taken some test shots on an adult.

“You want to keep it quick,” she says. “Make sure it’s comfortable for them. Have everything together.”

Make the Most of Your Camera Phone

Many parents will turn to their camera phones to get photos of their kids, and that’s perfectly fine.

Steinmann suggests turning your phone horizontally to get a more flattering shot. Also, don’t put too much distance between yourself and your subjects.

“Get close, and if you feel like you’re too close, get closer,” she says.

Instead of stressing over getting one perfect shot, take several. You can go through your camera roll later to select your favorites.

“I’ll take 20 versions of the same thing,” Steinmann says. “Generally, the first few are the better ones. After the first few, they’re starting to get antsy and squirmy and they’re going to get annoyed, and they’re less likely to smile.”

If your photo session is running past late afternoon and it’s getting dark outside, she recommends turning on your flash to provide a pop of light.

And if you have a newer iPhone, make sure to set your camera on portrait mode.

“What it does is it blurs out the background and keeps the focus on the person,” Steinmann says.

Recruit a Photo Assistant

When taking Easter photos of your children, don’t make it a solo effort. Enlist your spouse, a family member or a friend.

They can serve as an extra subject for test shots and can stand behind you making funny faces to get the little ones to smile in the photo.

“Don’t have that person stand to the right or the left of you,” Steinmann advises, “because they’re going to look over there.

She also says it can be a good idea to provide props for the photo shoot.

“Bringing props helps, because it gives [the children] something to hold or play with,” Steinmann says.

Leave It Unfiltered

When it comes time to print out or share your Easter photos with friends and family, Steinmann recommends parents avoid applying filters.

“I think it’s better just to keep it simple,” she says. “Besides, all these filters that we’re using now, they’re going to look dated later.”

The Secrets Of Theda Bara, Hollywood’s Original Vamp

Alamy

For the past few months, movie studios, directors, and actors have been making the rounds campaigning for their films to take home the golden statue on Sunday at the latest Academy Awards.

The Hollywood publicity machine may seem like an ingrained institution as old as the very first motion picture, but its roots grew out of a more unexpected place. Over a decade before the inaugural Oscars ceremony was ever staged, Theda Bara, the woman now considered the very first “vamp,” hit Hollywood with the speed and ferocity of a meteor shower.

For early-20th century audiences of the silent pictures, Bara was a megastar, akin to the likes of Meryl Streep. She starred in over 40 movies during her short, four-year cinematic career, and her antics continued to grace the headlines of newspapers and early gossip rags until her death in 1955.

‘Monster Hunter World’ Secrets: 15 Things You May Not Know

Many, many hours into Monster Hunter World, you’ll still have no chance of knowing absolutely everything.

It’s a game that manages to sneak you into NG+ so subtly you won’t even realise until you’re halfway in it. Nergigante might be the kinda-sorta main objective, but this being a Monster Hunter game, of course it doesn’t end there.

We’ve put together a list of things that you might not yet know, and hopefully it’ll help you on your hunts — or perhaps you’ll just find it interesting.

Let’s start with poison.

Poison Works A Bit Differently

You can start building up poison on a monster right after you’ve poisoned them. You don’t have to wait for it to wear off. However, like most status effects, the amount of poison damage you need to trigger the effect increases every time you trigger it.

Counting the Mounting

The edges of the screen will go dark and blurry when a monster is about to buck and try to shake you off. If you press R2 when you see this, you’ll brace yourself and not lose stamina. Depleting your stamina bar can see you thrown off.

You might also want to brace if you see them about to rub their back against a solid wall. If you’re unsure, better safe than sorry.

Mounting is considered to be another “ailment” by the game, similar to poison or paralysis. As such, it’s subject to the same kind of diminishing returns. Just like it’ll take more and more poisoned hits to inflict the ailment, it’ll take more and more altitudinal damage to trigger a mount.

How to Steal Wyvern Eggs in ‘Monster Hunter World’

Sling That Thing

You should be using the slinger in every fight. Some cases are very specific, like when a Barroth or Juryotodus covers itself in mud, if you sling watermoss at them it’ll soften that mud armour and chip it off. Or when you’re fighting Nergigante and the crystal ammo or dragon ammo can break off its spikes.

But even if there’s no situation-specific use case, you should always be carrying around flash pods to blind them, and dung pods to make Bazelgeuse go away. Damn Bazelgeuse.

Nighty Night

Some little critters only come out at certain times of the day!

The Prism Hercudrome, in particular, is necessary for the secret Rainbow Bright achievement and only comes out at dawn or dusk. You can find it in one of the secluded beaches near the starting camp in the Ancient Forest.

Unlock Your True Power

Some weapons have a hidden elemental attack. If your weapon has a greyed out elemental attack on its info screen, you won’t get the benefit of that until you find a piece of gear that specifically says it unlocks hidden elements.

Luckily, you can sort gear at the workshop by skills, so just select that one and see which pieces fit the requirements.

How to Capture (Not Kill) in ‘Monster Hunter World’

The “Oh Dang” Button

If you haven’t been using your farcaster, it’s an instant escape! Very handy. A wingdrake will come to fly you back to camp and the invincibility frames start almost straight away.

The Monster Hunter World interface isn’t the best, and sometimes rotating through all of your items can be frustrating mid-combat. There’s so great solution for that, but pick whatever works for you best — whether that’s reserving a spot on the item wheel for an instant escape, or reducing the amount of usable items to make it easier to find on your normal item button.

Tailriders For Life

If you upgrade your tailriders enough, they’ll set traps for you!

This is obviously super useful, though it won’t work against some enemies like Nergigante. Plus, as if you need a reason to deepen your alliance with the true stars of the game, the felynes.

No More Guesswork

Sometimes it can be hard to find the first bit of evidence from a monster. If you don’t want to waste any time, go back to your tent and grab the basic battle horn. There’s a song you can play that instantly upgrades your scout flies to level one for your target. That’ll get you started much quicker.

All Ghillied Up

If you want two monsters to fight each other and leave you alone, it’s a lot more effective to crouch inside a bush than using the ghillie suit. The latter option will just make them look around for you.

‘Monster Hunter World’ Review: Consider Your Free Time Captured

Two Bonks Make Them Right

If you see a teammate who’s stunned, you can actually knock them out of it! Definitely do this.

It’s similar to how your palico will knock you out of a stunned state sometimes, but don’t rely on their furry friend to do it at the right time. If you see the monster gearing up for a big attack, this should be your top priority.

Hunter Ranks Go Pretty High

The game actually goes for a long time after beating Nergigante. Up to over Hunter Rank 100. It’s insane. After the high rank monsters you have elder dragons, elderseal to hamper their super abilities, and then you get into tempered versions of everything.

My goodness.

Elemental, My Dear Watson

Certain areas have attrition effects on your health bar. There’s effluvial gas, and extreme heat. Both of these have armour that can protect you from the effects, if you’re out of the consumables that do the same thing.

Hornetaur chest armour nullifies effluvium, and there’s an item that does the same for heat. Though really, you should be picking up chillshrooms whenever you can.

Dealing With Roars

If your weapon is capable of blocking, you can block a roar. You can even roll through it, just as if it were an attack. Rolling requires very exact timing, but if you’re using a weapon like the great hammer, you don’t have much choice.

There’s also an armour skill called Earplugs that helps out with this. The full Bazelgeuse armour set offers top tier Earplugs, which means full protection from any roar. Any excuse to kill Bazelgeuse over and over is good enough for me.

…Damn Bazelgeuse.

‘Monster Hunter World’ Is Going to Be Alright

Monster Hunter World is Capcom’s best selling game ever. It’s already sold six million units, and the positive critical reception plus amazing word of mouth and shareable moments mean it will enjoy a solid period of sales to come. No longer limited to a Nintendo handheld, for many this is the introduction to the Monster Hunter franchise, and it’s made quite the splash.

Danielle Staub Gets Engaged to Marty Caffrey on ‘RHONJ: Secrets Revealed’

There’s no such thing as oversharing – at least, not on The Real Housewives of New Jersey: Secrets Revealed. On the Tuesday, January 31 special episode, the gals all gathered with host Andy Cohen to review never-before-seen footage from the season. While some of the moments were sweet (like Danielle Staub getting engaged), most were … about sex.

Self-Love Never Hurt Anyone

In case you were wondering, Dolores Catania has never masturbated. She does, however, share an uncommonly close bond with her ex-husband, Frank. During a lunch date with Joe Gorga, Frank admitted his true feelings for Dolores. “Dolores is one of the most important people in my life,” he said before adding, “I’ll always be in love with Dolores.” When Joe asked him why they didn’t just get back together and make it official, Frank said he didn’t want to ruin what they had.

Siggy Bought Condoms for Her Son

All of the women seemed to believe that they had or would have very open discussions with their children about sex when the time was right. In fact, Siggy Flicker admitted that she not only had discussed sex with her 18-year-old son, but she had purchased condoms for him. He probably loved his mother announcing that on national TV.

Danielle Gets Engaged

Danielle got engaged, and it was all caught on camera. Teresa Giudice and Margaret Josephs were with Danielle when it happened, and she seemed genuinely shocked. Both Margaret and Teresa broke down in tears as they watched Danielle’s boyfriend propose.

Ladies Reveals the Wildest Places They’ve had Sex

To wrap things up, everyone revealed the strangest places they’d had sex. Teresa had sex on an empty beach. Melissa Gorga had sex in a movie theater, which was (according to her) packed with people. Margaret had joined the mile-high club and Danielle had enjoyed a quickie at Melissa’s family restaurant opening. (No comment.)

Women Who Find Their Purpose Unlock the Secrets to Long-Term Health

Originally published April 7, 2015

Do you know your purpose in life?

In other words, do you have a strong sense of why you’re here, and what you’re meant to be doing?

If not, you’re not alone. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 4 out of 10 Americans couldn’t tell you what their life purpose is, and don’t feel they have any clear sense of direction. That’s nearly half. Another quarter don’t feel they have a handle on what gives their lives meaning.

Does it matter? Even if you don’t know exactly where your life is going, or where it should go, do you need to worry your head over it?

Maybe not, but here’s something to consider: Those who have a strong sense of purpose reap critical health benefits.

We’re talking less heart disease, fewer strokes, and a reduced risk of depression, to name just a few. In the end, having a strong sense of purpose might just help you live a longer, healthier life.

Good news, but if you don’t know what your purpose is, how are you supposed to find it?

We can help with that.

The Difference Between Living a Happy or Purposeful Life

Turns out that scientists have been researching this concept of “purpose” for years. We all know that eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and managing stress can help us avoid the major chronic diseases of our time, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. But we’re more than physical machines, and our brains have a big say in just how good we feel as we age.

You’ve probably heard that having a positive outlook can increase quality of life. A 2009 study, for instance, found that women who were more optimistic had lower rates of coronary heart disease and lived longer than more cynical hostile women. A 2011 study also concluded that regardless of income or overall health, a positive outlook affected longevity, and helped people to avoid disease.

But having a sense of purpose goes much deeper than a simple positive outlook. It’s not really about being happy, or upbeat. You can be these things and not have a sense of purpose. When you’re eating an ice cream cone, for example, you probably feel happy, but not necessarily like you’re life has meaning.

The thing about happiness alone is that it’s very fleeting, and can change at the drop of a hat. Researchers noted in a 2013 study, for example, that happiness is essentially a collection of how one feels at different moments, whereas life satisfaction, or purpose, goes beyond momentary feelings to address one’s life as a whole.

“Purpose,” say researchers in a 2009 study, “is a central, self-organizing life aim that organizes and stimulates goals, manages behaviors, and provides a sense of meaning.” They add that purpose provides direction “just as a compass,” offering a person a “self-sustaining source of meaning through goal pursuit and goal attainment.”

And it’s purpose, according to research, that helps us overcome the difficult moments to persevere in life—and that may also give us the good health we need to keep going.

The Health Benefits of Having a Sense of Purpose

That doesn’t mean that we can’t be happy while living our purpose. The two do often go together. But we can be unhappy, too, and still find meaning in what we’re doing. That may be the key to maintaining good health over the long term.

Here’s just a glimpse into some of what scientists have discovered about people who have a high sense of purpose in life:

  • They’re less likely to suffer heart disease: Researchers reviewed 10 studies with data from over 137,000 people, and found that those with a high sense of purpose (defined as a “sense of meaning and direction, and a feeling that life is worth living”), had a 23 percent reduced risk of death from all causes, and a 19 percent reduced risk of heart attack or stroke, compared to those with a low sense of purpose. “Developing and refining your sense of purpose could protect your heart health and potentially save your life,” said lead author Randy Cohen, M.D.
  • They live longer: In addition to the study above, others have shown that those with a sense of purpose are likely to live longer. In 2014, for example, researchers announced the results of a similar study of over 9,000 people with an average age of 65. Researchers had asked the participants questions about their wellbeing, including the feeling that what they did was worthwhile, their sense of purpose, and their sense of control over their lives. Those who had the greatest wellbeing scores were 30 percent less likely to die during the average eight-and-a-half-year follow-up period than those with the lowest wellbeing scores. Researchers concluded that the “meaningfulness and sense of purpose that older people have in their lives is also related to survival.” A second study published in 2014 found similar results—having a sense of purpose was associated with a longer life.
  • They have more enjoyable retirements: Back in 2009, researchers studied just over 1,200 elderly participants and found that a higher purpose of live was associated with a reduced risk of mortality. This time, those with a high sense of purpose were about half as likely to die during the five-year follow-up than those with a low sense of purpose. Researchers concluded that the tendency to derive meaning from life’s experiences and possessing a sense of intention about life—working toward a goal—contributed to successful aging.
  • They’re more resilient: Having a strong sense of purpose in life helps people overcome the inevitable difficulties along the way. If your sole goal is happiness, the loss of a job or loved one, an illness, or other major upset can send you into a downward spiral. If you have something that’s driving you forward, however, you’re more likely to rebound and continue on. “Purpose motivates people to persist rather than quit in the face of difficult situations,” researchers write [McKnight and Kashdan]. They add that it makes us more likely to bounce back, less likely to get ill, and more likely to experience shorter periods of stress. As psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl wrote, “Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.”

Lead researcher at Rush University Medical Center Patricia Boyle says, “I think the take-home message is that people need to be thoughtful about their lives, because having that sense of meaning or purpose will make a huge difference.”

Women Who Find Their Purpose Unlock the Secrets to Long-Term Health2

How Do I Find My Purpose?

You’re convinced that a sense of purpose is good for you.

But what if you don’t have one?

Don’t worry—figuring out your purpose can be a fun exercise. Even if you already have a sense of purpose, realize that it may change over the years, and returning to the question is never a waste of time.

Before you dig into the actual research on the subject, remember these five points:

  1. It’s not always simple: There are a lot of online quizzes out there that promise to deliver your sense of purpose in five minutes or less. Realize that sometimes it takes more time to figure it out. Give yourself that time to sit with the questions and dig deeply into the answers.
  2. Everyone has a purpose: You may have felt discouraged in the past when you were unable to pinpoint it, and worried that you were the odd one out. After all, there are those people who have a sense of purpose when they are children, and it stays constant with them their entire lives. But not everyone is like that. For many of us, our sense of purpose is ever evolving. Concentrate on what gives your life meaning
  3. It’s not always what you imagine it should be: We may think that there are only a few main types of purpose out there. Raising children. Devoting one’s life to a religion. Becoming an artist. But the number of possible life aims is just as numerous as the number of people on the planet. Be willing to find the one that is uniquely
  4. It’s never too late. It doesn’t matter how old you are—you can always find your sense of purpose in life. Maybe you’ve spent your life working a job you don’t really like, or struggling against circumstances that didn’t allow you to express your purpose. That’s okay. Decide today that the rest of your life will be devoted to a new purpose that you design.
  5. Having a purpose doesn’t require you to be the best: You don’t have to be the best businessman, the best teacher, the best mom, or the best painter to be qualified to live your purpose. Just because someone else sells more paintings than you doesn’t mean that painting isn’t your life purpose. It’s all about what brings your life meaning.

With that said, let’s look at some questions that will get you thinking about your life purpose. When you have some time, sit down with a pen and paper (or laptop computer) and let your thoughts flow. Don’t get caught up in having to come up with a convenient one- or two-sentence purpose for your life. Just let your answers guide you to the new adventure on which you’re about to embark.

  1. What do you do in your life today that feels important to you? Think over all the activities you’ve engaged in over the past three months. Which ones felt meaningful, or important, to you? It may be the time you spent with your children or other loved ones, time spent on a creative project, or even the time you spent reaching out to a stray cat. Don’t censor yourself—just write down your answers.
  2. What do you wish you could spend more time doing? Where are your thoughts when you’re bored? What do you wish you could be doing with your time when you have to be doing something you don’t like? Tap your daydreams. They’re full of important clues to your purpose.
  3. What would you do even if it got unpleasant? Have you biked through storms? Continued to write even though you’ve received fifty rejections? Raised money for a project even though it robbed you of leisure time? Think about those things you do even though they get tough sometimes. These are things you really care about.
  4. What do you do that makes time stand still? Do you lose track of time when you’re gardening, working on an old car, or creating a new computer program? Think about those things you do that get you into the “zone,” or “flow.” These are things that come naturally to you, and likely indicate areas where you could find meaning. If you can’t think of anything you do today that makes you feel that way, think back to your childhood. What did you used to spend hours doing?
  5. What do you often think about doing, but are afraid to do? Often what we want and what we’re afraid of are very similar. Do you think about traveling the country and giving presentations on a topic you’re passionate about, but you’re afraid of public speaking? Do you think about singing the songs you’ve written to an audience, but you’re afraid to get up on stage? Do you think about caring for people, but are afraid to go back to college to get your nursing degree? Mine your fears for clues.
  6. How do you enrich the lives of others? Research shows that humans typically find meaning in giving to others. It’s not when we’re satisfying our own little wants and needs that we feel on purpose—it’s when what we’re doing has effects beyond ourselves. Where in your life do you enrich others? How do your efforts contribute to others’ lives? Don’t over-think this. Maybe you give others work and security through your business; provide a clean floor at the theater, school, or museum; arrange beautiful flowers for birthdays and weddings; or cook delicious food. Match those things that benefit others with the things you enjoy doing, and you’re getting closer to your purpose.
  7. What would you do if you couldn’t go home? The police come around and say sorry, you can come home only to sleep at night. The rest of the time you have to go busy yourself. Oh, and by the way, they’re going to take care of your finances, so you don’t have to go to work if you don’t want to. How would you spend your days? Your answer provides insights into what you’re naturally drawn to, and what brings you meaning.

When you’ve finished answering these questions, give yourself a few days, and then come back and revisit them. Hopefully you’ll get closer to finding your purpose in life, and enjoying the health benefits.

Even better if you become motivated to pursue that purpose, for that’s when the real magic happens.

Do you find that having a sense of purpose makes you stronger and healthier? Please share your thoughts.

The hidden secrets of Bosnia and Herzegovina

When you think of the word paradise, your mind probably doesn’t immediately spring to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and why would it?! You most likely think of a small island in Greece or a golden beach on the coast of Spain. But, this is where you could be going wrong, because, in many ways, Bosnia and Herzegovina is the hidden paradise of Europe, and it’s been right under our noses all this time.

Nestled on the Balkan peninsula, Bosnia is a country full of a rich and varied history, and certainly one of the more interesting European nations because we don’t know much about it. Even more seasoned travelers would probably pass this proud nation right by, and may not even realize it exists in the first place. But, this gem is definitely one of the best-kept secrets in Europe, and a place you need to put at the top of your travel list, thanks to these hidden treasures.

Trebinje

Welcome to one of the best-kept secrets in the country – Trebinje is the southernmost town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s not very well-known, and most people wouldn’t be able to pick it out on a map. It’s a small but important town and is situated only 28km from the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. You should check out Trebinje properly by taking a walk to Arhangel Mihailo Church, a striking new church offering some exquisite views over the town, and the steep surrounding hills. There’s also the Trebišnjica River, which is home to the iconic Arslanagic Bridge – well worth a look if you’re a tourist.

Mostar

You might have heard of Mostar – it’s arguably the most culturally significant city in the entire country and a place you need to head to during your time here. It oozes charm and sophistication and is home to the UNESCO landmark the Stari Most. This is the old bridge in Mostar that is a stunning piece of Balkan Islamic architectures and has extreme cultural significance. Originally built in the 15000s, it was destroyed in the war and then rebuilt as an enduring emblem of unity for a nation so long divided.

Sarajevo

Okay, so it’s not so much a secret, as it is the capital city, but you can’t visit without a trip to Sarajevo. For some people it’s more famous for the U2 and Pavarotti song Miss Sarajevo, but, it’s also a hugely important city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and one of the most interesting capitals we’ve visited. A broken city still recovering from a history of war, Sarajevo is in the process of healing itself. Check out the Tunnel of Hope, and the abandoned infrastructure from the 1986 Winter Olympics. Because of the number of synagogues and Orthodox churches here, Sarajevo is often called the Jerusalem of Europe – a walking tour of the city is definitely recommended.

So, now you’ve discovered some of the greatest secrets of this mysterious and beguiling country. And now you can see just what it is that makes Bosnia and Herzegovina one of the best-kept secrets, and most appealing destinations, in Europe. If you’re looking to expand your experiences, and get some more stamps in your passport, make sure you book a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina as soon as you can.

Seven Secrets to Winning Big Government Contracts for Small Business Owners

“I have always been an entrepreneur, even as a youth—from mowing lawns and delivering groceries as a teen, to selling laptop computers in my early 20s,” says Kenneth Kelly, president and CEO of Strativia, a national technical and professional services company.

Kelly, who hails from the corporate world managing financial management software installation projects at hotels and resorts throughout the world, launched Strativia in 2007. The company has set a high bar in winning government contracts.

Headquartered in Maryland with offices in Atlanta and Denver, Strativia has been awarded nearly $ 50 million in government contracts over the past year, with no plans of slowing down.

“We don’t wait for tomorrow. We do it all with exceptional speed, mindful of the need to solve the problem now,” Kelly says.

Kelly outlines the company’s strategy with government contracting; “We have built strong relationships with our customers and partners by delivering on our promises and adding real value through service delivery and innovation.”

(Kenneth C. Kelly. Image: Strativia)

His advice for new business owners entering the government contracting space? “Target prime contractors and work to become their preferred subcontractor. Then, after you have amassed a certain amount of past performance, begin to target smaller government contracts.”

Here are seven more secrets Kelly shared on winning government contracts:

Get Properly Registered

First things first, take care of the basics and become properly registered to sell to the government through your state, local, and federal government regulatory authorities.

Know Your Buyers’ Market

Understand which agencies buy what you sell and how they buy it. (This can be determined by visiting an agency’s website, speaking with small business contacts, procurement contacts, and various databases.)

Don’t Circumvent the Process

Upon understanding how the government buys your services, obtain the necessary contract vehicles, small business certifications, and other requirements as defined by the agency.

Connect Through Strategic Networking

Attend agency procurement and outreach events. If done properly and consistently, events can serve as exceptional opportunities to encounter and engage with the “right” connections and potential partnerships for present or future collaboration. Show up to these events with your winning game face on, a strategy, and prepared to do business.

Engage Through Strategic Communications

Send your tailored marketing materials to the appropriate contacts and request meetings to learn about upcoming procurements and how to best position your company to win.

Learn, Leverage, and Collaborate

If you don’t meet each of the requirements or don’t have adequate past performance, find teaming partners to fill gaps and go after work together. (If you don’t win, request a debriefing and learn what you can do better.)

Build a Solid Reputation

Once you win the work, deliver on the requirements. Keep the big picture in mind and understand how each contract can help you win your next.

Isle of man’s hidden secrets

The Isle of Man is a magical, beautiful island nestled in the Irish Sea, and situated between Great Britain and Ireland. The island is a popular tourist destination, and a place with its feet firmly in British and Gaelic folklore. That’s not to mention the fact that the island contains some of the most spectacular wildlife and natural beauty in all the British Isles. This obscure and fascinating place might just be the best place you’ve never heard of.

The Isle of Man (Ellan Vannin as it is also known) is one of the must-see places in the British Isles and a place unlike any you’ve ever encountered before. This place is exactly like stepping into the middle of a fairytale, complete with friendly locals, amazing beauty, and some incredible secrets as well. We’re going to look at some of the best-hidden secrets the Isle of Man has to offer, and things you simply must check out today.

Magnetic Hill

There’s nothing like a bit of magic to spice up a wet weekend. So, when you visit the Isle of Man, make sure you head to Magnetic Hill and drive down until you find a place with the markers. Then you need to stop, place your car in neutral with the handbrake off, and prepare to be amazed. Your car will actually begin rolling back up the hill at a pretty decent speed, as if by magic. Of course, it’s really just an optical illusion, but it’s still a cool experience and adds to the magic and mythology of the Isle of Man.

Old Fairy Bridge

The Isle of Man is one of the only places in the world where they still believe in the existence of fairies. In fact, as far as the locals are concerned, there are many supernatural forces at work in this place. If you want to experience some of the magic for yourself, we would recommend a trip to the Old Fairy Bridge. The bridge is located over Middle River and is popular with tourists who visit the area. The Fairy Bridge that most people know is the one on the A5, but this is actually pretty recent. The one that bridges Middle River, near Kewaigue, is the real Fairy Bridge.

Wild Wallabies

When you first lay eyes on the wild wallabies here, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re actually in Australia! But, there are, in fact, wild wallabies roaming free all across the Isle of Man. This has been the case since the ‘60s, and they are generally found in the North of the island. So, if you want to have a day that is packed with natural beauty, and you want to enjoy spotting some of these majestic creatures, head to the north of the island, and spend the day spotting wallabies.

Camera Obscura

There may still be a few of these around the world, but this one, found on Douglas Head, has an incredible 11 lenses! It was constructed in 1892 and played a big role in the Isle of Man tourist boom at the time. The wonderfully intricate design of the mirrors and lenses provide an exceptional view of Douglas. The best thing is that the camera obscura is still in working order today, and, when the flag flies, it means it’s open for the public.

These are just a small selection of the secrets and opportunities that await you on the Isle of Man. It’s the perfect place to go for that once-in-a-lifetime experience, filled with excitement, adventure, and a large helping of folklore thrown in too.

‘Greenleaf’ Recap: Season 2, Episode 13: “Secrets Are Exposed”

“For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.” Mark 4:22 (NIV)

Secrets don’t stay secrets for very long and many of the Greenleaf’s secrets are out- or on their way out in episode 13, “Silence and Loneliness.”

Kerissa (Kim Hawthorne) has spilled the tea on everything that’s been going on with Basie Skanks’ (Jason Dirden),  gambling debts and how it has begun to affect Triumph- since it was the church’s money that Basie gambled and loss during his poker games. She has gone behind her husband’s back and told her in-laws, Bishop Greenleaf (Keith David) and Lady Mae (Lynn Whitfield) all about how Jacob (Lamman Rucker) emptied their savings account to pay off Basie’s debt; which is how they acquired the house and the land but, now she wants more – much more.

She wants Triumph! She wants Jacob to be the pastor of Basie’s church and she wants to claim her position as first lady of the church, and she’ll stop at nothing to do it. Kerissa somehow persuades Basie’s accountant to provide her with the receipts proving his indiscretions and mishandling of the church’s money.

And she hands those receipts right on over to Bishop and Lady Mae so they can help her make this happen. With proof in hand, Bishop marches right over to Skanks’ office and threatens to deliver the accountant’s reports to the police if he doesn’t publicly step down as pastor of Triumph and hand the position over to his son.

Initially, Skanks declines the Bishop’s offer and reminds him that blackmail is a sin. But, he quickly changes his tune when he receives another visitor to his office who is not as verbal as Bishop and decides to lay hands on Skanks.

The same crooked gentleman that the Bishop witnessed speaking to Skanks in his office during his last visit a few episodes back, is the same gentleman who barges in Skanks’ office and causes him to make a non-joyful noise. Though viewers aren’t privy to the actual beating, we do see a very badly beaten Skanks engaging in a very emotional conversation with his wife Tasha (Asia’h Epperson) who pleads with him to turn himself into the police.

She’s beyond scared by how far this has gone, especially since she has been begging him to stop the gambling but he wouldn’t listen. Or in his words, “[he] couldn’t hear.” She tells him that this has gone too far and agrees with Bishop on involving the police and handing over the church to Jacob.

Basie finally agrees and makes a phone call to Jacob offering over the position of Pastor. Jacob is reluctant to accept due to the stipulations surrounding the transfer of authorities but, ultimately agrees to take over Triumph after Basie turns himself in. The only problem is – Basie’s now M.I.A.

Yep. Just like Kevin (Tye White) here’s another character who has just up and disappeared. After confessing his sins to the congregation and publicly handing over the church to Jacob, Basie is nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, Kevin may still be missing but it doesn’t look like Charity (Deborah Joy Winans) is actually missing him. She’s busy working closely with Jabari (Sean Dominic) on writing and selling these songs but, they’re still not as close as she would like them to be. A new customer comes to the studio to review and makes changes to a song written by Charity before she decides to purchase it, and before she leaves, the client ends up kissing Jabari right in front of her.

Ok, so the kiss is just a peck on the cheek but it rattles Charity to the point where she needs answers from Jabari on where they are in their relationship. “Do you like me?” A simple question that Jabari kind of dances around answering to Charity’s liking. It seems like he’s all about business and getting their songs sold and on the radio. But later, he makes his intentions perfectly clear.

After dinner with the new client Charity and Jabari go to the studio to tinker around with some new music and Jabari speaks his peace. He tells her that the reason he’s been so hard to read in their relationship is because he’s being careful. She has a baby and is recently divorced so he doesn’t want to move too fast or jump too deep into something with someone who has “so much going on.” But yes, he REALLY likes her and he shows her just how much by kissing her – an actual real kiss this time, not just a peck on the cheek.

In other relationship news, poor Zora (Lovie Simone) continues to hide more and more about her relationship with Isaiah (Roshon Fegan) from her parents and everyone else.  He’s gradually progressing from just verbal abuse to borderline physical abuse. During their car ride, things go left. Zora wants to go to the cotillion and of course she wants Isaiah to be her date.

But, he doesn’t want to go and decides to make alternative plans on the same night and wants Zora to come with him instead. When he asks who she’s going to the cotillion with if not him, her answer is “someone else.” He doesn’t like that so he slams on the brakes causing Zora to her bump her head on the dashboard. Now, not only is she concealing her abusive sexual relationship but, also using makeup to conceal the big red bruise on her forehead.

The biggest secret in this episode comes from Gigi (Merle Dandridge), though. We knew her Uncle Mack (Gregory Alan Williams) molested her baby sister Faith, which resulted in her suicide but Gigi has conveniently left out the part where tried the same thing with her first. What?!!?

She tells Darius (Rick Fox) that he took her to a secluded area on their family land,  but she was able to fight him off before things went too far. She never told anyone about it. Now she blames herself for not saying anything to her parents or to Faith, who was targeted next.  Not only is Gigi still dealing with the emotional impact of Mack’s death she’s now having recurring flashbacks of him and it’s taking a toll on her.

So much is going on. We’ll have to stay tuned for the next episode to see what else will be revealed.

7 Secrets of a Side Hustler: How This Millennial Leads a $400 Million Project While Running Her Own Successful Business

Let’s be real; most of us have a hard time managing one full-time job. However, there are business savvy hustlers, like Jereshia Hawk, who seem to make it all work.

While working as a transmission pipeline engineer for a Fortune 500 company, Hawk helps provide natural gas and electricity to over 6 million people every day. The Detroit-based trailblazer is also the proud founder of the Goal Getter Group, a consulting business and networking resource for women who work nine-to-five, but also want to build a business on the side.

Below, Hawk shares her advice for growing a successful side business:

1. Focus on Activities That Generate Revenue

“Don’t get caught up with being busy, [if you are] not actually being productive.”

2. Start Each Day With Your ‘Top Three’

“Every morning while I’m brushing my teeth, I write out my top-three priorities for the day on my bathroom mirror. This helps me hone in on the things I have to do.”

3. Automate Your Systems

“For the tasks you must do over and over again in your business, find ways to automate those processes.”

4. Don’t Wing It

“Create a plan and get specific [with it]. How much money do you want to earn a month? How are you going to earn it? What resources do you need to make that happen? What actions do you need to take to achieve your goal?”

5. Know That You Can’t Always Do It Alone You

“Knowing who to ask for help is more important sometimes than knowing the answer. You need to have a friend, a mentor, or a mastermind to turn to, for when you start feeling unsure of what to do next.”

6. Focus on Impact Before Income

“Don’t focus on selling a product. Rather, focus on solving a problem. Listen to what your audience is asking for, and create solutions to their problems. [You can also] create valuable free content that gives your potential clients a quick win when they join your email list.”

7. Don’t Focus on Who Isn’t There

“Serve the people who show up. When you only have 12 people on your email list, it can feel like you’re talking into space, but those 12 subscribers are a dozen human beings with a dozen hearts that you can have a positive impact on.”
