‘Vogue’ Honors Virgil Abloh, Demna Gvasalia and Gosha Rubchinskiy in September 2018 Issue

Though the Beyoncé-starring cover story may be the biggest draw for Vogue‘s September 2018 issue, the magazine also includes a feature saluting a dozen boundary-breaking designers from around the globe. Virgil Abloh is the sole male American designer, with European stars like Gosha Rubchinskiy, Demna Gvasalia, Riccardo Tisci and Hedi Slimane making up the majority of the list and UNDERCOVER‘s Jun Takahashi representing Japan.

The interviews touch on themes like globalism and international travel, with each designer offering a different take. Some are political: “Everybody today talks about war, refugees, and I am like, yes—I know exactly what that means.” notes Gvasalia, while Nicolas Ghesquière states, “We’re all concerned about diversity—more than just in fashion shows. In terms of actions and associations and organizations around the world, Louis Vuitton can do more.” Others reference their global gallavanting: Karl Lagerfeld, creative director for Chanel, Fendi and his eponymous label affirms, “I have so much to do that I’m not so much for traveling anymore.”

Meanwhile, Slimane notes his diminishing appreciation for Los Angeles: “I’m always attached to the idea of California, but recently less so to the city of Los Angeles. I don’t feel comfortable with the evolution over the last few years … Something untouched, mysterious, and magical has gone. … It has definitely moved my focus toward Paris.” Of all the interviewees, Virgil Abloh offers perhaps the most optimistic viewpoint on global communities: “Young people in every city that I go to are loving life and actively participating in it. I am shocked at how open-minded young people of different cultures are compared to the presiding older generations.

Read the entire feature on Vogue‘s site.

Recently, it was confirmed that Anna Wintour will remain with Condé Nast as Vogue‘s editor-in-chief & artistic director.

Woman says she has been a victim of ID theft around 15 times since September

A woman in Washington state is speaking out after falling victim to identity theft around 15 times since early September, according to a local news station. That time period roughly matches when Equifax divulged to the public that it was the victim of a massive data breach — and the Seattle woman thinks the two incidents are related.

Her story illustrates the nightmarish ordeal that can begin after someone steals your personal information. The Equifax breach exposed more than 145.5 million people to identity theft, meaning their names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and, in some cases, even their credit card numbers are in danger of being accessed by unknown numbers of criminals.

Katie Van Fleet told KOMO-TV that it all started when she got a letter thanking her for opening a line of credit at Barneys New York. She did no such thing, so she reported it as fraud and thought everything was okay.

Sleepless in Seattle: Woman says she’s been a victim of ID theft more than a dozen times

Then came a deluge of letters from other companies and stores, welcoming her and thanking her for opening new credit lines.

“I didn’t think this would ever happen to me,” Van Fleet told KOMO. “So it’s been very frustrating. I feel extremely violated that somebody out there has my information, and I’m dealing with the repercussions of this.”

Trying to be proactive, Van Fleet said that she put a fraud alert on her account — but that didn’t stop anything. She soon got a notice that someone had opened an account with T-Mobile in her name and charged more than $ 3,000 on it.

According to the TV station, she only recently got the bogus charges to stop after putting a freeze on her credit.

This is why money expert Clark Howard is so adamant about credit freezes. He says it is the No. 1 way to stop identity fraud.

A lot of people think they are safeguarding their personal info when they get — or even worse, pay for — a fraud alert, but they are mistaken.

The difference between a fraud alert and a credit freeze can be illustrated this way: A fraud alert tells you somebody’s in your home. A credit freeze locks all the doors to your home.

Credit Freeze Guide: The best protection against ID theft

Clark says not to make the mistake of only contacting Equifax when trying to freeze your credit. “It’s imperative that you freeze your credit with all three main credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion,” he says in our Credit Freeze Guide. Here is the contact info for the agencies:

Clark is also a big proponent of setting up free credit monitoring with Credit Karma, which gives users online access to their credit reports anytime they like.

LP Pathfinders: top Instagrams from September 2017

emluxton

From picturesque Peruvian mountainscapes to colourful Cappadocian hot air balloons, our Pathfinders have been busy sharing their snaps from the far reaches of the world this month. Here are five of our favourite frames from September.

Cusco, Peru

A post shared by Daniel James (@danflyingsolo) on

‘While trekking through the Peruvian Andes I was blown away by the rugged landscapes and friendly locals, the combination of which helped make this hike so spectacular. The highlight for me was the walk down from the peak with the towering valley rising on both sides.’ – Daniel, @danflyingsolo

Why we like it: Dan snapped this shot while on assignment in Peru as part of the Pathfinders programme. The barren landscape stretching out ahead evokes the exhilaration of intrepid travel, framed superbly by the imposing twin peaks and cloud-strewn blue sky.

Bali, Indonesia

‘If you look carefully you can spot small tributes like this all over the island of Bali on sidewalks, statues, temples, koi ponds. Balinese people practice a Hindu belief system and believe that creating daily offerings will appease the gods. It’s incredible seeing locals create these so quickly from just palm leaves, fruit and rice!’ – Sher, @shershegoes

Why we like it: Sher’s crisp image of a canang sari (Balinese offering) above a koi pond is not only visually striking thanks, in part, to the contrast between its colourful foreground and dark background but also illustrates how religion shapes the travel experience in so many destinations, with rituals and ceremonies continually capturing the curiosity of travellers.

Cappadocia, Turkey

‘While people come from all over the world to Turkey’s mountainous Cappadocia region for its whimsical ‘fairy chimney’ rock formations, I myself have fallen in love with the land for moments like this. Hundreds of hot air balloons rise up into the air here each morning, a spectacle that can momentarily turn even the most melancholic traveller into a wide-eyed child.’ Yulia, @insearchofperfect

Why we like it: Cappadocia’s hot air balloons are predominantly snapped from afar, with photographers drawing on the sense of tranquillity induced by the sight of floating balloons. Having based herself in the heart of the action, Yulia offers a fresh, dynamic perspective of the event, while still capitalising on the vibrancy of the balloons’ colours and scale of the vast landscape.

Alajuela, Costa Rica

A post shared by Emily Luxton (@em_luxton) on

‘I’m not normally one for early starts, but when there’s an active volcano visible from the foot of your bed it’s pretty easy to wake up at 5.30am! I was thrilled to catch the peak of Arenal Volcano in the warm dawn light; definitely worth getting out of bed for.’ – Emily, @em_luxton

Why we like it: the morning light breaking on the volcano, paired with the atmospheric wisps of white cloud, combine to dramatise the landform’s dominion over its surrounds. The colour and sense of scale provided by the foreground flora is an added bonus.

Central Mongolia

‘While traveling through Central Mongolia, we came across many nomadic families and numerous yak herds. After spending the night in a ger – a traditional, light-weight tent – we woke up early to witness our host family going through their intriguing morning routine.’ – Oksana & Max, @drinkteatravel

Why we like it: A vibrant shot with an unusual subject matter, which fastens the eye thanks to the background blur. This photo encapsulates a common travel phenomenon: how one person’s mundane routine provides a source of enchantment to another. On a more rudimentary level, who doesn’t enjoy a good snap of a yak?

LP Pathfinders: top video of the month, September 2017

Untitled design (17)

Every month, we curate the best blog posts and Instagrams from our Lonely Planet Pathfinders.

This month we were bowled over by the beautiful footage of Scotland from Cameron and Natasha of The World Pursuit.

‘We recently took a 10-day road trip around Scotland’s North Coast 500. Covering 516 miles, it was a beautifully scenic drive through the wild Scottish Highlands where we encountered highland cows, stags, sheep and stunning coastline along the way. Here are the best spots from the trip.’

Scotland’s North Coast 500 – The World Pursuit

We think this video strikes a great balance of beautiful drone footage of the Highlands’ iconic vistas with up-close shots of the characterful wildlife, together they paint a wanderlust-inducing picture of Cameron and Natasha’s overall trip. We’re ready to jump in the car and follow hot on their heels.

As always, there were a lot of great submissions this month. We particularly enjoyed Chloe’s tour of Brighton, an iconic seaside destination in the UK, while Dan’s reflections on his recent trip to Peru had us dreaming of our next big trip.

Thank you to all the Pathfinders who submitted videos this month – keep your eyes peeled on our Thorn Tree forum where we’ll post the next submission call-out. U.S. Lost 33,000 Jobs in September, Thanks to Hurricanes

The combined force of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria derailed America’s seven-year hiring streak last month. U.S. employers lost 33,000 jobs in September, the first decline in the monthly economic bellwether in seven years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Although analysts predicted the number would take a hit after the widespread disruption from the storms, the jobs figures were well below what was expected. The unemployment rate, however, did edge down to 4.2 percent. Average monthly wages were 2.9 percent higher than a year earlier.

Get Well Wednesday: September Is National Childhood Obesity Month

September is Childhood Obesity Month, which helps to bring awareness to the increasing number of children who are overweight and obese. Dr. Lisa Ashe works with children who have health problems due to obesity and hopes that more information about the necessity of children’s healthy eating habits will help to stem this dangerous trend. Here’s more information.

IS OBESITY HEREDITARY?
There is likely a genetic component of obesity, however this form of obesity is very rare, less than 1 percent.

WHAT CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS ARE A RESULT OF  CHILDHOOD OBESITY?

High blood pressure, fatty liver, knee and back pain and arthritis, sleep apnea and risk for diabetes.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT OR HELP YOUR CHILD FROM CHILDHOOD OBESITY?

Avoid sugary drinks such as soda and juice, limit use of electronics. encourage exercise and outside playing, enroll them in sports or after school activities, limit fast food and encourage portion control.

HOW IS OBESITY MEASURED IN CHILDREN?

It is measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is based on weight and height.

HOW DOES SLEEP AFFECT OBESITY?

Lack of sleep is linked to hormone deregulation, increase caloric intake and decreased energy, all of which can cause obesity.

IS IT OKAY TO PUT YOUR CHILD ON A STRICT DIET?

Yes, it is important to make sure your child is not overeating or eating the wrong things.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO WHEN YOUR CHILD IS ACTIVE BUT STILL OVERWEIGHT?

See a nutritionist and evaluate their diet. Also, are they on any medications that may contribute to their being overweight?

IS IT OKAY FOR CHILDREN TO TAKE MEAL SUPPLEMENTS AND DRINK WEIGHT LOSS TUMMY TEA?

Children are growing and need certain amounts of nutrients, calories and protein. These nutrients should be obtained through food and vitamins if recommended by the child’s pediatrician. Additionally, it is important that children learn portion control and how to eat healthy so obesity does not continue into adulthood.

Dr. Lisa Ashe serves as the medical director of Be Well Medical Group – a leading concierge medicine and wellness group currently serving the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia metro areas. She’s a board certified internal medicine physician.

Why don’t they use body fat percentage to determine overweight? Body fat preventage may be a better predictor of health.

More studies need to take place in order for it to be globally used.

What should the average healthy weight be for a four-year-old?

Average weight for a four-year-old is about 40 pounds.

Why aren’t there BMI charts specific to African-Americans? Our body composition is different from Caucasians or Asians.

The BMI charts are universal, however the studies that were done to develop the chart used primarily Caucasian participants. This is true for most research studies in the US. The BMI is a good overall predictor of healthy weight for average Americans.

What about children who have asthma and are on Albuterol or steroids. Steroids make children gain weight and asthmatic children can’t always play outside and exercise.

Steroids absolutely cause children and adults to gain weight. It is important for your doctor to have you on the lowest effective dose. Children on steroids may need to be on a more strict diet.

How much should a 16-year-old, 6′, black, semi-athletic female weigh?

Anywhere from 140-180 pounds on average.

This September, Oprah will return to broadcast television for…

This September, Oprah will return to broadcast television for the first time since her talk show ended (there was a one-off interview with First Lady MichelleObama last December on CBS), joining 60 Minutes as a special contributor. But the story of how Oprah decided to return requires that we first go back to the election of Donald Trump. Two weeks after he won the presidency, Oprah decided to gather a group of Trump and Hillary Clinton supporters—all women—for a roundtable discussion. Feelings were still so raw that some of the women didn’t even want to sit at the same table. “One said, ‘I’ve never been this close to a Trump supporter,’ ” says Oprah. “I go: ‘Not that you know of, maybe.’ ” About an hour in, Oprah could see their guards coming down. “By pressing the conversation in such a way that people could hear each other’s stories without them being politicized, I was able to get those women from different backgrounds to begin to actually hear and feel for each other. By the end of that two and a half hours, I could have gotten them to sing ‘Kumbaya’ for real if I wanted to.” She cracks up. “I really could’ve! OK—everybody hold hands!” Ironically enough, it was the moment when she realized that no one had filmed the discussion that a light switched on: Maybe, just maybe, this is exactly what America needs right now.

Behind the ‘zines: Lonely Planet Traveller’s September issue

A pile of Lonely Planet Traveller magazines

Getting ready to send our contributors copies of the new issue

The September issue of Lonely Planet Traveller magazine UK is hot off the press and packed with inspiration for late summer adventures. This month we reveal France’s best-kept secret spots, take a road trip through the Great Lakes, explore southeast Asia by boat and hunt down the coolest places in London. Take a look behind the scenes as we share stories and photography tips from a few of this month’s features.

Chicago, USA

Photographer Aubrie Pick explored Chicago, birthplace of the skyscraper, for our ultimate Great Lakes road trip.

‘I took this photo aboard the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise as it made its way up the Chicago River. I loved the way the blue of the sky reflected in the glass of the skyscrapers, which then reflected in the water. It was a tricky shot, because being low in the water with the buildings so high ran the risk of parallax, an effect where objects appear to veer together. To counteract this, I tried not to shoot up and instead kept my camera level with the horizon.’

Champasak, Laos

Voyaging through Laos on the mighty Mekong river, writer Oliver Berry watched the sun set over rice fields near the temple complex of Wat Phu.

‘Rice is a hugely important crop in Laos, and there are paddies all along the banks of the Mekong. We’d spent the afternoon at the temple and later got chatting to a local farmer and his family who were listening to Laotian pop music and relaxing in the evening sunshine. In the distance you can just make out a sacred mountain topped by a dome-shaped rock known as a linga, for local Buddhists and Hindus a holy symbol of Shiva.’

London, England

Acting Features Editor Jess Cole met fish smoker Max in east London while researching our feature on the new makers, producers and creatives making waves across the city.

‘I love the glow of pride that radiates from this photo. Max smokes fish to a secret recipe in an arch near London Fields – so secret, in fact, that he explained to us apologetically that photography was strictly banned inside the smokehouse itself, in case it inadvertently betrayed his unique methods or recipe to any budding rivals! We didn’t mind: the brickwork right outside was the perfect backdrop to match the gritty railway arch theme of our feature.’

Chiloé Archipelago, Chile

In this month’s photo story, Philip Lee Harvey focuses his lens on the unique timber architecture and seafaring traditions of Chiloé in Chilean Patagonia. He tells us how he got this shot of capital Castro:

Palafitos, or stilt houses, have become a symbol of Chiloé. Originally built as fisherman’s cottages and places to store the catch, many are now hotels and restaurants, as well as homes. The weather in Chiloe is extremely unpredictable and can change in seconds. On my third visit to this view, I got lucky – after a very wet day, the sun appeared. Minutes later the clouds returned and the scene lost its magic. Perseverance and luck – the basis of any photographic career’.

Christian and Karen Glymph: New York, September, 2014

2015-05-31-1433093925-3943893-ChristianandKarenGlymphinNYCSept2014croppedandsizes.jpg

In the fall of 2003 I’m in the streets of Washington, DC doing stills for the filming of “National Treasure.” A young man and his Mom, Christian and Karen Glymph, are closely watching the proceedings. Christian, then aged 17, is a passionate filmmaker, who already has made a number of short films. He shares his work with me and it displays a distinct sense of style and knowledge of technique and conventions. We stay in touch over time and he keeps me posted on his new projects. I am impressed by the development and growth of his work and skills. A few years later, during filming of the second “National Treasure”, I help Christian get a production assistant job on the film. We continue to stay in touch, via phone mostly and email. I do what I can to encourage him. At one point, he comes up with a very fresh, unique story/character idea for a popular film franchise. Excited for and by this, I connect him with the producer of the franchise, loving the possibility of this young, gifted artist having success. Sadly, this producer writes Christian a nasty cease and desist letter, missing the whole point and gift of this connection. Temporarily disheartened by this, Christian eventually evolves his idea into a story unrelated to the franchise but still retaining its essence. This past September, Christian and Karen come to New York from DC to attend the opening of my KINDSIGHT® exhibit at the 92nd Street Y, where, near the end of the opening when most guests have left, we make this picture. Christian and I speak a couple of times following this and he indicates something about some medical tests. But I don’t get the full impact of this until, a couple of weeks ago, as we’re speaking on the phone, he tells me that he has stage 4 brain cancer and is undergoing chemo and radiation therapy. My heart plummets through the floor at this news, and we have a long, good conversation about existence, life, death, spirit, deeper truth and the definition of our being. One thought that emerges strongly for me is wanting to see Christian direct a full on feature film. If you are in a position to help this happen, be ready for a call from me. And if you want to take the initiative and call me, please, do it. I will connect you with Christian. The beacon of kindsight erases the shadow of hindsight.

Mabou: September, 2014, New York City

2014-10-11-Kindsight2MabouLoiseauNewYorkCitySept202014imageonlySIZED.jpg

During my career as a “Hollywood Photographer” I have been blessed to meet many amazing people of great accomplishment, who have achieved fame through talent, dedication and spirit. But for me, by far and hands down the one who has given and gives me the greatest hope for the present and future of our world, who exemplifies and embodies the very best of humanity, is young Mabou Loiseau. Mabou, age 8, fluently speaks eight languages (with more in the works) and plays eight musical instruments. When I saw and heard her on Katie Couric, my heart soared, for I have long held the deep belief that knowing multiple languages fosters understanding, tolerance and inclusion in our world and that our educational system should teach at least five languages from the very beginning of schooling. In this regard, Mabou’s parents, who recognized Mabou’s penchant for language during her infancy, are great visionaries for fostering and nurturing Mabou’s language and expression abilities. I myself, in my advancing age, have learned how to say “thank you” in many languages and I have found that even this one word said in one’s language opens connection with others all over. I connect with Mabou’s mother, Esther, and a meeting is arranged. They arrive together at the 92nd Street Y and we go into the art gallery there where my KINDSIGHT'” exhibit is currently on view. My hope is that their seeing this work’s celebration of human spirit will clarify my joy in meeting them. I speak limited phrases I know in other languages and in each case, Mabou replies in that language with her angelic voice and smile. We then go out into the nearby streets and make some photos. We continue our wonderful conversation, Mabou, mom Esther and myself, and I reiterate my gratitude and belief that Mabou will surely help bring people together and make the world better. With smiles we bid farewell and vow to keep in touch and to continue what was started on this beautiful day.
