Seven photos that prove the devastating impact of climate change on our planet

Global warming, pollution and climate change are threatening the lives of people on our planet. Here, seven reportage photographers bring the reality home

climate change vietnam
Vietnam by Quoc Nguyen
‘This is the rubbish dump of Kon Tum, Vietnam. Here, the Bahnar community make their living collecting and selling plastic waste. The burning of this waste releases harmful pollutants that contribute to climate change and damage the human nervous system. Women and children are most at risk, so I was touched by this child’s innocence, unaware of the situation they were in.’

‘Climate change is at the heart of a global crisis that, for many countries, is already critical,’ says Gareth Redmond-King, head of climate and energy at WWF UK. ‘We are seeing melting ice caps in Antarctica and Greenland that are causing rising sea levels; changing habitats that lead to animal extinction and restricted food supply; and extreme weather that is devastating parts of the world at an alarming rate.’ In fact, climate change has already displaced millions of ‘climate refugees’. By 2050, 200 million people worldwide will have been forced to leave their homes as a result.

‘This is an equality issue. It is the vulnerable who are impacted most, even in rich nations like the US – it was women of colour who found it most difficult to get back on their feet after Hurricane Harvey,’ says Rachel Kennerley, international climate campaigner for Friends of the Earth. ‘The narrative around climate change is often that of a sad polar bear on a melting ice cap, but this is a human crisis, too.’ And yet, US President Donald Trump refuses to accept that climate change is happening. In June 2017, he rejected the Paris Agreement, which commits America and 187 other countries to keep rising global temperatures below 2°C. ‘The Arctic is already more than two degrees in polar regions,’ says Redmond-King. ‘Sea levels are rising due to melting caps and this has a devastating impact on low-lying countries, including Bangladesh and South Pacific islands such as Fiji, where people have already been evacuated due to flood risks. This isn’t temporary aid action − it’s permanent.’

In the UK, extreme weather and coastal erosion hints at the wider problem. Kennerley adds, ‘As the fifth richest country in the world − a country that benefited hugely from the industrial revolution − we have a responsibility to cut emissions and move our energy towards cleaner, renewable sources to help protect vulnerable parts of the planet where we are rapidly running out of time.’

Here, seven photographers who aim to humanise the plight of global populations affected by climate change, talk us through their most emotive shots.

A California Water Polo Coach Has Been Charged With Molesting Seven Underage Athletes

(LOS ANGELES) — A coach who ran a club affiliated with USA Water Polo has been charged with the sexual abuse of seven underage female players during one-on-one coaching sessions, prosecutors said Wednesday, the latest instance of mentors of young athletes being accused of misconduct.

Bahram Hojreh, 42, pleaded not guilty to charges including sexual battery, lewd acts upon a child, and sexual penetration by foreign object of a minor, according to a filing this week in Orange County Superior Court.

His attorney, Ricardo Nicol, told The Associated Press that Hojreh never had a blemish on his record after working with hundreds of children over two decades.

The victims were underage female water polo players and the alleged crimes occurred between 2014 and January of this year, the Orange County district attorney’s office said. Four of the girls were 15 or younger, prosecutors said.

At least two players reported the assaults to their parents, who contacted authorities, prosecutors said. Hojreh is accused of touching the girls’ breasts and genitals, penetrating them with his fingers and coercing them to touch his genitals, officials said.

Authorities were searching for additional possible victims.

The International Water Polo Club was removed from using the pool at a joint military base in Los Alamitos after police informed base officials in January that they were investigating allegations involving “sexual misconduct” against Hojreh, said Col. Richard Lalor, a spokesman for the base.

Hojreh touts himself as a coach for nearly a quarter-century who has “helped develop multiple Olympians.” Until January he served on the board of directors for the local Southern California chapter of USA Water Polo, the governing body for water polo in the United States.

Hojreh was suspended from the regional board and had his membership in the national organization revoked as soon as the allegations against him came to light at the beginning of the year, said Christopher Ramsey, the CEO of USA Water Polo.

“USA Water Polo has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct,” Ramsey said in a statement Wednesday.

Molestation scandals involving young victims have recently rocked USA Swimming and USA Gymnastics. Larry Nassar, a doctor for the gymnastics national team, was sentenced in January after pleading guilty to the sexual assault of minors.

In February, the Southern California News Group found that USA Swimming repeatedly balked at overhauling a culture in which “the sexual abuse of underage swimmers by their coaches and others in positions of power within the sport was commonplace and even accepted by top officials and coaches,” resulting in hundreds of young victims.

Hojreh appeared Wednesday in Superior Court and was released on $ 250,000 bond. He was ordered to appear for a pretrial hearing on June 14, the district attorney’s office said.

He was a water polo coach at University High School in Irvine, but his employment ended in March 2017, said Annie Brown, a spokeswoman for the Irvine Unified School District.

Citing confidentiality laws, Brown declined to provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding Hojreh’s employment, but said there were no reports to school officials of sexual misconduct involving the coach.

Hojreh had also coached at Kennedy High School in Anaheim, but district officials declined to provide any information about his employment. Hojreh’s name was removed from the school’s website after the AP inquired about his employment status.

The International Water Polo Club was registered as a nonprofit organization, but did not register with the California attorney general’s office. After inquiries from The Associated Press, the attorney general’s office sent a letter to Hojreh warning him that his organization was “both unregistered and, consequentially, delinquent for past filings.”

Hojreh, who graduated from the University of California, Irvine, was a member of the Men’s NCAA Division 1 water polo team from 1994 to 1998.

A new asteroid was discovered just seven hours before cruising past Earth

Asteroid 2018 BD

Space rocks flying without a real purpose through space could one day wreak havoc on Earth. But that’s hardly something you need to worried about. Some of these asteroids are automatically labeled as “potentially hazardous” if they pass us by within a certain distance… but that distance can be millions of miles away from Earth, so they often don’t really pose a threat.

Others are so small that you might only spot them hours before they cruise past Earth. Those rocks aren’t exactly hazardous, although they could do some damage should they hit one of the many satellites orbiting our planet.

Seven Secrets to Winning Big Government Contracts for Small Business Owners

“I have always been an entrepreneur, even as a youth—from mowing lawns and delivering groceries as a teen, to selling laptop computers in my early 20s,” says Kenneth Kelly, president and CEO of Strativia, a national technical and professional services company.

Kelly, who hails from the corporate world managing financial management software installation projects at hotels and resorts throughout the world, launched Strativia in 2007. The company has set a high bar in winning government contracts.

Headquartered in Maryland with offices in Atlanta and Denver, Strativia has been awarded nearly $ 50 million in government contracts over the past year, with no plans of slowing down.

“We don’t wait for tomorrow. We do it all with exceptional speed, mindful of the need to solve the problem now,” Kelly says.

Kelly outlines the company’s strategy with government contracting; “We have built strong relationships with our customers and partners by delivering on our promises and adding real value through service delivery and innovation.”

(Kenneth C. Kelly. Image: Strativia)

His advice for new business owners entering the government contracting space? “Target prime contractors and work to become their preferred subcontractor. Then, after you have amassed a certain amount of past performance, begin to target smaller government contracts.”

Here are seven more secrets Kelly shared on winning government contracts:

Get Properly Registered

First things first, take care of the basics and become properly registered to sell to the government through your state, local, and federal government regulatory authorities.

Know Your Buyers’ Market

Understand which agencies buy what you sell and how they buy it. (This can be determined by visiting an agency’s website, speaking with small business contacts, procurement contacts, and various databases.)

Don’t Circumvent the Process

Upon understanding how the government buys your services, obtain the necessary contract vehicles, small business certifications, and other requirements as defined by the agency.

Connect Through Strategic Networking

Attend agency procurement and outreach events. If done properly and consistently, events can serve as exceptional opportunities to encounter and engage with the “right” connections and potential partnerships for present or future collaboration. Show up to these events with your winning game face on, a strategy, and prepared to do business.

Engage Through Strategic Communications

Send your tailored marketing materials to the appropriate contacts and request meetings to learn about upcoming procurements and how to best position your company to win.

Learn, Leverage, and Collaborate

If you don’t meet each of the requirements or don’t have adequate past performance, find teaming partners to fill gaps and go after work together. (If you don’t win, request a debriefing and learn what you can do better.)

Build a Solid Reputation

Once you win the work, deliver on the requirements. Keep the big picture in mind and understand how each contract can help you win your next.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

Stone Island x Porter and Seven Other Key European Drops

The biggest drops of the past week saw Supreme launch its latest The North Face collaboration, while Palace released the next instalment of its Winter 2017 collection. The next week isn’t looking too bad either, with Stone Island and Porter releasing their first joint capsule since 2015. Aside from that, the next seven days will also see a bevy of hotly anticipated adidas Originals collaborations — including with wings & horns and Sneakersnstuff — as well as pieces from Soulland, Parra and Diadora.

The next week also sees the long-awaited release of A-COLD-WALL*‘s Air Force 1 collaboration with NikeLab, as the London brand drops the sneakers at a one-off pop-up in its home city. We’ve put together a list of all the best products dropping in Europe this week, as well as what you’ll need to do to get your hands on them.

Parra “Get Me Out of Here” Collection

Dutch artist Parra has returned with his latest capsule collection, with an array of staple pieces bearing his artworks. Some of the standout pieces include a faux-shearling jacket that features an embroidered logo, a stone-washed hoodie and a “Star Struck” long-sleeve. The full collection is available now from the Parra web store.

Soulland x Bruta

The first collection from Danish brand Soulland and London’s Bruta saw the two take influence from house plants in Soulland creative director Silas Adler‘s apartment and from the colorful artwork of Peter Doig. Featuring floral embroidery, the collection includes shirts in navy, white and black. The collection is available now from Soulland’s stores and Bruta’s web store.

Antonioli INNER x Saucony Grid 9000 Milano

Saucony

For its collaboration with American sportswear brand Saucony, Milanese store Antonioli INNER took inspiration from its hometown. Taking on the Grid 9000 silhouette, the store gave it a cream and grey suede upper, with metallic gold highlights along the tongue as well as a gold and green corresponding panels. The colorway is a reference to Milan’s iconic Duomo. The capsule is available now in-store and online.

Stone Island x Porter

Having last worked together to celebrate Porter’s 80th anniversary in 2015, Stone Island has once again worked with the Japanese bag specialists. The latest capsule mixes Porter’s expertise with Stone Island’s legacy of innovative fabrics and experimental techniques. The collection — which includes the backpack, duffle and portfolio bags — is available now from Stone Island’s web store, with prices ranging from £175 GBP to £525 GBP (approximately $ 230 USD to $ 695 USD).

A-COLD-WALL* x NikeLab Air Force 1 High

Nike

The collaboration between London’s A-COLD-WALL* and NikeLab first appeared back in January, and is now seeing the light of day. The deconstructed Air Force 1 High comes in a tonal colorway that A-COLD-WALL*’s Samuel Ross described as allowing “the shoe to breathe, and it feels very minimalistic as a result.” The sneakers will be available at an as-yet-unannounced London location on October 21.

Hanon x Diadora “St. Clair”

Hanon

To mark 35 years since Aberdeen FC defeated Real Madrid to win the 1983 European Cup, Scottish store Hanon has paid tribute to its hometown club — and the St. Clair ferry that took fans from Scotland to Gothenburg for the final — for a Diadora collaboration. The sneaker’s colorway references the ferry, while the “112” on the side marks the time of the winning goal and the rain pattern on the insole recalls the wet weather that night. The sneaker will drop in-store on October 25, before going online three days later.

adidas Originals by wings+horns Fall/Winter 2017

adidas Originals

Having worked together for several seasons, adidas Originals and Canadian brand wings+horns have revealed another strong collaboration. The collection features reworked adidas staples, with pieces such as a Bonded Wool Full Zip Hoodie and a Double Waffle Knit Pullover Hoodie, while the two brands also included some classic sneaker silhouettes in the capsule. The full collection will be available online via adidas and wings+horns, as well as select retailers worldwide on October 26.

adidas Originals x Sneakersnstuff NMD CS2 “Class of 1999” Pack

adidas Originals

Having teased the capsule for a while, the collaboration between adidas Originals and Swedish retailer Sneakersnstuff was finally unveiled this week. Titled “Class of 99,” the capsule sees the NMD CS2 silhouette wrapped in classic collegiate colorways of green/white and burgundy/gold. To accompany the sneakers, the retailer has also created heavyweight Russell Athletic tracksuits. The collection is set to drop on October 28 via Sneakersnstuff’s official website, with sneakers priced at $ 179 USD, and the tracksuits costing $ 69 USD for the hoodie and $ 59 USD for the sweatpants.

Blake Lively had seven outfit changes in one day and handled it like the total pro she is

The yellow suit is EVERYTHING

blake lively outfits

If you’ve been keeping an eye on Blake Lively’s style evolution through the years, you’ll know the woman knows her fashion. Still, we were quite impressed when she managed to pull not one, not two, but three outfit changes in one day.

The actress has been out and about promoting her new film All I See Is You in New York, and chose different looks for each media appearance or interview she did. Well, you wouldn’t want to be caught twice in the same outfit, now would you?

Blake Lively outfits

Rex

Blake started off the day like she meant business, in a three-piece plaid suit from the Ralph Lauren AW17 collection, which she accessorised with a tie, burgundy Michael Kors bag and studded biker boots. The outfit was so spot on, in even earned her fashion kudos from Gigi Hadid, who called her ‘everything’.

Blake Lively outfits

Rex

Later on, the actress changed into a fabulous houndstooth Chanel jumpsuit, paired with a novelty rolling dice bag, also by Chanel, and Louboutin heels.

Blake Lively outfits

Rex

The mum-of-two also got papped later in the day in a blue wrap coat layered over a striped skirt and floral boots, which she wore with a brown leather jacket.

Blake Lively outfits

Rex

After all those muted shades, it was time for Blake to brighten things up a bit, and that she did with a yellow two-piece Brandon Maxwell outfit with palazzo trousers and bell sleeves. She paired it with Lorraine Scwhartz diamond earrings, because why not? (The pair are BFFs in real life, so would be rude not to).

So far so good, but she made the look even better by adding some gold leopard heels by Charlotte Olympia. Just look at them.

A post shared by Blake Lively (@blakelively) on

Four outfits later, Blake opted for an elegant strapless Oscar de la Renta midi dress, that she loved so much, she had to share pictures of it from various angles on her Instagram page. To be fair, I would to.

When evening came, Blake looked to Studio 54 for inspiration, and as you can imagine, there was plenty of glitter involved.

She caught up with husband Ryan Reynolds in between interviews, and wore a  navy sequin basketball-style vest, emblazoned with the word ‘Monster’, which she paired with wide trousers, red stilettos and matching red coat. Fierce.

Finally, for her last outfit of the day (you still with me?), Blake went for a dazzling silver dress with metallic chain detailing, teamed with strappy sandals and elegant white duster coat.

These are the seven signs that you’re dating the wrong person

Author, speaker and love coach Persia Lawson explains what to look for

Words by Sophie Hockings

Ever found yourself questioning the compatibility of you and your partner, and wondering whether you might be dating the wrong person? Having once been a serial cheater and self-confessed love addict, Persia Lawson spoke to  Marie Claire about how she beat her addiction to dysfunctional relationships, and how you can tell if you’re dating the wrong person.

Falling in love quickly and easily could be a sign that you’re dating the wrong person

‘Falling in love alters your brain chemistry.’ Lawson told Marie Claire. ‘For that reason, the feeling of being in love evokes a similar response to using drugs or alcohol. In a way it is torturous and a way of avoiding real life and confronting your own feelings. For me, obsessing over a boy was a way of escaping a turbulent and sometimes scary home life.’

A tendency to  prioritise your relationship over everything else

Are you guilty of people-pleasing, prioritising your partner over yourself, or compromising your own goals to do things for your partner? If so, Lawson argues that this is another form of escapism and a sign that you could be dating the wrong person: ‘People in dysfunctional relationships often lose their sense of themselves. If you feel that you are constantly people pleasing and doing whatever your partner wants to do – almost morphing into them – it can be a sign that you’re scared of being yourself, or discovering who you really are.’

dating the wrong person

Staying in relationships that are full of drama and chaos

We all love a bit of drama, whether it be in a book, film or playing out on our Facebook feeds, but when drama is a constant third-wheel to your relationship it soon loses its appeal. ‘I had a client who was struggling with all sorts of things, and she was obsessed with this idea of a really sexy, crazy, violent relationship.’ Lawson tells Marie Claire. ‘I think we are constantly shown examples in the media where a normal couple is seen as boring. But in reality, drama only highlights an ability to commit.’

Behaving in impulsive and irrational ways is a sign you’re dating the wrong person

Dating the wrong person can create a toxic environment, prompting irrational and impulsive behaviour, ‘which might be anything from one night stands, to cheating, to going to strip clubs or developing an unhealthy relationship with porn.’ Lawson says. Her view is that ultimately this stems from a fear of intimacy; ‘I was terrified of commitment and that’s why I was so disruptive in all my early relationships.’

Being drawn to emotionally unavailable people

The biggest problem that Lawson sees in her female clients is an attraction to unavailable men. Why? ‘Because we’re terrified of rejection, so we chase after people we know we can’t have. Why do we want to have Jimmy Choos and go on luxury holidays? Because we can’t bloody afford it.’

dating the wrong person

Being unwilling to commit yourself

We’re so accustomed to the games and sexual politics of the modern dating world, that an outright proposition of commitment can send us into panic mode. ‘We are so used to sitting around looking at our phones wondering when they are going to call, that when you don’t have that drama it feels very odd. A lot of my clients totally freak out when the person they are lusting after turns around and says, “Ok, I want to be with you.”‘ Lawson says.

So how can you avoid dating the wrong person?

‘If you don’t believe that you are worth being with, worth investing time into, and worth respecting, then no one else will’, Lawson tells Marie Claire, ‘and that always starts with yourself. You need to treat yourself better and invest in your relationship with yourself to avoid dating the wrong person’. Two years into her current relationship, this is what Lawson credits as the foundation of the happiness she has found with her boyfriend. Additionally, Lawson is an advocate for the benefits of both mindfulness and gratitude: ‘if we stay present and connected to the now, and are thankful for what we have, rather than obsessing and looking for a boyfriend, it’s a hell of a lot more attractive, and we open ourselves up for someone to come in.’

Seven of Hollywood’s craziest lookalikes – from Tom Hardy and Logan Marshall-Green to Katy Perry and Zooey Deschanel

Meet the stars of Twinseltown – the A-listers who get confused for their celebrity doubles.

Like the Doctor’s new companion Bradley Walsh, 57, and funnyman Brian Conley, below right next to Bradley, fans sometimes struggle to figure out Who’s who.

Comedian Brian Conley was often mistaken in the street for The Chase host Bradley Walsh

Brian, 56, said: “I’ll be walking along and people go: ‘I love you in The Chase’.

“It used to be the other way round. But obviously I’m much better looking than Brad!”

Here, we round up the famous members of the doppel gang.

Katy… or Zooey?

Capital Pictures

Katy Perry, right, has often been mistaken for countless celebrities including Zooey Deschanel[/caption]

Katy Perry, left, and Zooey Deschanel, right, are a pair of California Gurls whose bright blue eyes and similar hairstyles have led to them being mistaken for each other.

New Girl actress Zooey, 37, said of her resemblance to Katy, 32: “It’s a little bit annoying, to be totally blunt.

I’m happy that she’s famous enough now that she’s not going out and being mistaken for me.”

Isla… or Amy?

Isla and Amy are aware of the doppelganger jokes and often pose on the red carpet together for a laugh
Alpha Press

Actors Isla Fisher, left, and Amy Adams, right, are so alike that Isla once superimposed her doppelganger on to her family Christmas card.

The former Home And Away star, 41, laughed: “No one noticed.”

Meanwhile, Amy, 43, said: “I get Isla Fisher all the time. When I’m with Isla, we both look at one another and say, ‘I get it, but I don’t get it.’ ”

Jessica… or Bryce?

Jessica Chastain once pretended to be Bryce Dallas Howard when mistaken for her
Rex Features

Rather than see red, Zero Dark Thirty’s Jessica Chastain pretended to be her flame-haired double Bryce Dallas Howard, 36, right.

When a group of teenagers thought she was the Jurassic World star. Jessica, left, said: “I had this moment of, ‘Do I tell them that they’re wrong and it’s not me or do I just pretend I’m Bryce?’ And, as one does, I pretended I was Bryce.”

Daniel… or Elijah?

Elijah Wood is often told he looks like Daniel Radcliffe and Tobey Maguire
Capital Pictures

Movie fans still comment on the resemblance between Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, 28, left, and Elijah Wood right – but it seems the Lord Of The Rings actor has had enough.

Elijah, 36, explained the mix-up started years ago when both of their films were in cinemas at the same time, adding: “We get it – the joke is over.”

Logan… or Tom?

Logan Marshall-Green said in an interview that he is thrilled to be told he looks like Tom Hardy

Comparing Dunkirk’s Tom Hardy, 39, left, to Logan Marshall-Green, right, is a bit of a web herring as far as the Spider-Man Homecoming actor is concerned.

Logan, 40, said: “I’d be honoured to be in the same sentence as Tom Hardy. I’ve been a twin since the day I was born – fraternal, but we look a lot alike – so I’ve already been mixed up with another man.”

Niall… or Allen?

Goff Photos

Selecting the Mercury Seven

Selecting the Mercury Seven

The names of the seven Mercury astronauts were announced in April 1959 amid a flurry of publicity and patriotism. This work provides biographical details of all thirty-two finalists for the seven coveted places as America’s pioneering astronauts. All of the candidates were among the nation’s elite pilots involved in testing new supersonic aircraft capabilities. Most had served as wartime fighter and bomber pilots; some were test pilots on top secret and sophisticated aviation projects, while others were fleet admirals, prisoners of war, and proposed pilots for spaceflight programs such as the Dyna-Soar (X-20). The names of all 32 finalists have been kept secret until very recently. ‘Selecting the Mercury Seven’ also relates the history and difficulties behind the initial choice of candidates. The lives, motivations, military careers, and achievements of the unsuccessful twenty-five finalists are explored first in fully authorized biographies. Test pilots for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, each man has a fascinating and very different story to tell. All thirty-two men had to endure meticulous, demeaning, and brutal week-long medical examinations at the Lovelace Clinic in New Mexico. This was followed by another torturous week at the Wright Aeromedical Laboratory in Ohio, where they were subjected to extreme fitness and physiological testing, the sole purpose of which was to sort out the Supermen from the near-supermen. The final part of the book examines the accomplishments and spaceflights of the seven successful candidates, bringing their amazing stories right up to date.

Enid Blyton: Biography of the Author Behind Noddy, The Famous Five, and The Secret Seven

Enid Blyton: Biography of the Author Behind Noddy, The Famous Five, and The Secret Seven

ABOUT THE BOOK Enid Blyton (1897-1968) stands as one of the most popular childrens book writers of the 20th century. Her legacy continues through a devoted fan base of those who grew up with her stories of inquisitive children getting into misadventures in the English countryside. Blyton also appealed to younger readers with her Noddy series, about a little boy made out of wood who lives in Toytown; the series produced a total of 24 books and a string of popular TV series. The appeal of Blytons books for older readers, from ages eight to 12, was primarily the lack of parental supervision or interference; in the Famous Five books, the indulgent aunt and uncle generally let the kids go off, unaccompanied in caravans or on camping trips across the moors at the ripe old ages of 14 though 16. MEET THE AUTHOR Paula Whiteside is currently a freelance writer for several web content providers, as well as the copy editor for Wine Business Monthly, an international industry magazine located in the Sonoma Valley Wine Country. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Although her academic career was promising, her parents marriage was not as stable. Enid later recalled nights when she would comfort her brothers at the top of the stairs as their parents loudly argued below. Her father left her mother for his secretary at the wholesale clothing business he managed when Enid was 13. To keep up appearances, the children, when asked, would tell neighbors that he was away on a visit. Enid later used this ruse as the premise for her book The Six Bad Boys, which Blyton biographer, Barbara Stoney, called an unusual attempt for Enid at social realism.” With her greatest ally gone from the home, young Enid began writing as a way to escape her mother. This most likely contributed to her prolific writing output as an adult, writing up to 10,000 words a day. The young Blyton also entertained her brothers by telling them stories, made up rhymes, wrote in her diary and read prodigiously. Her work and deter

On the Seven Seas: Wargames Rules for the Age of Piracy and Adventure C.1500-1730

On the Seven Seas: Wargames Rules for the Age of Piracy and Adventure C.1500-1730

“On the Seven Seas” is a set of wargaming rules covering the high adventure and low morals of the world of the pirate. The rules cover licensed privateers such as da Gama and Drake, ruthless pirates of the Spanish Main, Blackbeard, the Barbary corsairs, the wako of the Far East, not to mention the anti-pirate squadrons, Spanish garrisons and native warriors from around the world that found themselves at odds with generations of sea-borne reavers. The focus of the game is on boarding actions and the exploits of pirate crews on land, and the rules offer a quick-to-learn, basic game based around individual characters and small units of rank-and-file. Most games will run to some 30 figures a side, although larger games are possible, and tribal forces especially will consist of more models. Gameplay centers around two driving motivations that epitomize the pirate life – Fear and Greed. Cunning captains will have to balance these two elements, instilling fear in their opponents with bloodthirsty reputations, while keeping their own crews in line with the promise of loot and wealth. Captains and crew are not just distinguished by these two ratings, however – skills, characteristics and disadvantages can dramatically alter a character’s abilities, and allow for the development of characters over time. The rules also contain maneuver and gunnery rules for ship-on-ship combat. This is not a game of mass naval actions, but of small, personal duels between determined captains. Caravels, sloops, schooners, native canoes, junks and square-rigged ships up to frigate size can be deployed in the pursuit of a prize… or a pirate vessel. Varied scenarios and a detailed campaign system allow players to develop the stories of their crews, with scenarios determined either randomly, by player choice, or by the progression along a sample campaign path. Elements of a more fantastical nature, such as ghost ships, sea creatures and the strange powers of native mystics, may also be inclu
