Prince Louis Makes First Public Appearance Since His Birth, Surrounded by Royal Family

RITE OF PASSAGE: Prince Louis, the third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, was baptized on Monday at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace.
The chapel holds tremendous significance for the royal family: Louis’ elder brother Prince George was also christened there, and the chapel was where the late Princess Diana’s body was laid before her funeral.
Members of the royal family congregated at the private ceremony on Monday afternoon including siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were not in attendance.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a V-neck cream dress by Alexander McQueen and a floral embellished headpiece by Jane Taylor. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex followed closely behind the pair. Meghan Markle wore an olive green dress by Ralph Lauren and a matching Stephen Jones hat.
Prince Louis’ six godparents are Nicholas van Cutsem, a friend of Prince William’s; Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, a friend from prep school and Eton; Lady Laura Meade, wife of Prince William’s close friend James Meade; Guy Pelly, a longtime friend of Prince William and Prince Harry;

Zara McDermott reveals Adam Collard hasn’t contacted her since leaving the Love Island villa as she reveals truce with Rosie Williams

ZARA McDermott has revealed Adam Collard hasn’t been in touch with her since leaving the Love Island villa last night.

The government adviser, 21, confirmed on Good Morning Britain earlier today there had been radio silence from the Geordie personal trainer, 22, despite him admitting just days ago he still has feelings for her.

Zara McDermott revealed Adam Collard hasn’t been in touch with her since he left the Love Island villa last night
ITV

Richard Arnold asked Zara if she had heard from Adam since he was booted out of the villa last night.

She replied: “I’ve not heard from him .. I think he needs to pull his finger out a little bit.

“It wasn’t easy watching him kiss someone else on TV so soon after we had separated so I think he has got to pull his finger out a little bit and make some effort.

“The Adam I watch on TV and the Adam I got to know in the villa are two different people. I need to wait to speak to him in person.”

Sat next to her, Rosie Williams, a 26-year-old lawyer, added: “ He has got to prove himself to you, hasn’t he babe.”

The two girls insisted that, despite drama on the show which saw them fight over the Geordie personal trainer, they were fine.

Zara said: “We are absolutely fine.”

Rosie agreed: “We are going to go for dinner and have a little chat.”

Good Morning Britain
Zara and Rosie insisted on Good Morning Britain they had made amends after fighting over Adam in the villa

The segment got off to a bumpy start when Kate Garraway accidentally fell off a giant bean bag and onto the lap of another former Love Island contestant, Charlie Frederick, live on the show.

The TV star, 51, looked shocked as she ended up getting cosier to the model than she had planned during the show earlier today.

The camera panned across the studio to show Kate sat on a giant bean bag along with co-host Ranvir Singh and Love Island stars Hayley Hughes, Zara and Rosie in addition to Charlie, as well as Richard on an inflatable flamingo.

Kate joked: “When sitting on a giant bean bag, it’s probably best not to actually dress as the bean bag.”

However, as she spoke, the presenter sunk into a gap down the side and onto Charlie.

She grabbed his leg as she struggled to pick herself up off the floor and ended up in a fit of giggles with her head in her hands.

BEST DEAL UPDATE (UK):

These ‘Soulcalibur’ Warriors Are the Best Thing Since Sliced Head

Transcending history and the world — and several console generations — Soulcalibur VI will continue a tale of soul and swords that began a quarter-of-a-century ago. That said, it’s been on quite a worrying hiatus for fans like us. Soulcalibur V came out in 2012 and made the sort of massive missteps one only sees in a ring out loss.

Be that as it may, six years have passed and we figure newcomers ought to know which souls burn the brightest in the roster. Most of the fighters in this list have been confirmed as returning and any absentees here had best be shoehorned in come launch time, lest the legend of this franchise die an untimely death.

Mitsurugi samurai
Mistrugui fighting in the an ancient Greek-inspired stage. SoulCalibur VI is shaping up to be one of the best looking fighting games ever made.

1. Heishiro Mitsurugi – Token Samurai Guy

Every fighting game needs a stoic Japanese guy — an embodiment of bushido with a bigger headband fetish than Daniel LaRusso (if possible). Street Fighter has Ryu, Virtua Fighter boasts Akira Yuki and Tekken has three generations of crazy-eyebrowed Mishimas. Mitsurugi is the Souls series answer to this archetype and he’s been present and accounted for since 1995’s Soul Edge.

What’s his deal? Mitsy looks a little geriatric in his recent Soulcalibur VI incarnation and is still very much designed to be an approachable all-rounder. Pro players bemoan his predictable, scrub-friendly toolset but the fact is he’s quite lethal at any range in the right hands.

Much like Haohmaru from the Samurai Shodown series, Mitsurugi is meant to resemble legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. You could also argue that his tragic peasant-rags-to-ronin-riches backstory mirrors Kikuchiyo from The Seven Samurai.

Mitsurugi’s hobbies include collecting every sword in the world (except the actual franchise MacGuffin) and almost never putting on a shirt properly. He’s a “one sleeve and leave it” kind of guy.

Taki charges her sword up with electricity. It's an OH&S nightmare.

2. Taki – Demon Huntress of Spandex

Another OG fighter who hails all the way back to this series’ inception, Taki is the kunoichi who loves a good spray-on onesie. The only thing she dislikes more than evil is the comfort and support of common sense chest protection.

What’s her deal? Don’t let the diminutive kodachi blades lull you into a false sense of security. What Taki lacks in steel length she more than makes up for with acrobatic prowess and hyper-mobility. She’s basically Yoda on red cordial. Keep her well at range or you’ll get a bunch of new speed-holes installed.

Apparently Taki’s chosen name wasn’t the devs throwing shade on her fashion sense by making a play on the word “tacky”. It actually means “much rejoicing,” though fans who played Soulcalibur V didn’t rejoice very much when they found her replaced by Natsu, a younger protégé. Thankfully, Project Soul has seen sense and Taki will be back again in Soulcalibur VI.

Talim looks to camera. The single tear she's about to shed for being cut out of the series has yet to be rendered.

3. Talim – Jettisoned Fan Fave

This tonfa-wielding wind-priestess is a weird one. She’s insanely popular with the fanbase but, strangely, we almost never got paired against her in Soulcalibur IV‘s online mode. Something extra weird about Talim: she had no copycat successor, nor a roster spot, in Soulcalibur V. She was just there one day and gone (possibly with the wind) the next.

What’s her deal? The ill-advised idea to bring two nightsticks to a sword fight means Talim isn’t your heavy-hitter of the piece. She’s based around cunning evasion and speedy, pressure-oriented combos that are designed to wrong-foot her opponents.

Though Talim was considered to be Filipina on her debut, she never actually had any realistic features of that racial background. Oddly, fans were quick to demand Project Soul fix her skin tone in Soulcalibur III and yet nobody raised a single eyebrow at her ability to weaponise wind, presumably via chronic flatulence.

A problem has come along and Ivy has decided to whip it. She's whipped it good.

4. Isabella ‘Ivy’ Valentine – Whips it Good

Say “hello” – or murmur another, shorter safe-word – to Ivy, a buxom snake sword exponent who’s been brawling since 1999’s Soulcalibur. She started out life as the illegitimate daughter of franchise antagonist and undead pirate Cervantes de Leon. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree here: Ivy has the evil gene and though she’s no buccaneer she’s arrr-rated in other ways. (Sorry.)

What is the dominatrix? Essentially, Ivy is a zoner who has been equipped with the longest reach weapon in Soulcalibur (a snake sword can shift from a broadsword into a chain whip form). She’s difficult to master, too — her command throws are so tricky to pull off they’ve had Xbox achievements tied to them in the past. So best of luck with that.

Ivy’s been used extensively in promotional material for the series and over the years certain parts of her design were stripped back whilst other facets saw enhancement. That’s about as diplomatic as we can get on this topic, to be honest. Lastly, if you’re wondering why she’s so spry and gravity-resistant at age 50, the answer is: immortality siphoned from a very bad sword. That, or good genetics and Maybelline. One of the two.

Kilik is praying before a match. Praying to rod.

5. Kilik – In Rod He Trusts

Speak softly and carry a big stick: that’s the motto of Kilik. He’s basically the head of staff in the Soulcalibur series — a drubber of faces who twirls a very mean broom handle. Also, this palindromic warrior monk has had a Jedi-padawan relationship with Edge Master (a jack-of-all-styles fighter) over the years.

Why should you put your faith in rod? If you like to keep people frustrated and at distance you should select Kilik (or seek counselling — that’s really unhealthy behaviour). Mind you, this is OG Kilik I’m talking about. Strangely, Project Soul made him a filthy “mimic” character in Soulcalibur V, a random fighting-style copycat with no unique form of his own.

Beyond that cardinal sin of character design, there haven’t been a ton of changes to Kilik over the years. The holy mirror of Dvapara-Yuga (read: the mystical item that keeps him from turning evil) has been shrunk from a bandolier down to a stylish necklace, so that’s nice, functional fashion.

The best recent change is that in Soulcalibur VI he’s no longer a style-less parrot. Kilik is back to sticking with what he knows best (which would be…sticking).

A promo shot advertising the fact that Mitsurugi and Geralt will face off. Oddly, they're not actually facing one another.

Honourable Mentions – Crossover Craziness

Before we tie this off, let’s not discount the power of novelty-factor here. Over the years the Soul franchise has had some cracking one-time visitors, like Spawn, Link, Kratos, Apprentice (Starkiller), Heihachi Mishima, Devil Jin, Darth Vader, Ezio Auditore, and Yoda.

Soulcalibur VI will be no exception. Be sure to get your preorder in to play as the White Wolf himself, Geralt of Rivia. And if you’re listening, Project Souls, we’ll pay good money for a themed stage that has Roach the horse bugged out on the roof of a nearby village hut. Universe authentic.

‘The Most Optimistic Generation Since the 1990s.’ Andre Agassi on the Tennis Players to Watch

U.S. tennis great Andre Agassi says a generation of young American tennis players could once again dominate the game like he and Pete Sampras did in the 1990s.

Speaking in Paris during the French Open, which he was attending as an ambassador for the Swiss watchmaker Longines, Agassi told TIME that he thought U.S. players had suffered in world rankings while an unusually gifted generation of players like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have dominated the scene. “This generation hasn’t left a lot of room for anybody to pick up any slack,” he says.

Yet there are bright American stars emerging, said the former world number one. Agassi says Frances Tiafoe, “a hell of an athlete,” could be one to watch at slams in the years to come; as well as the 6’ 11’’ Reilly Opelka. “I think we have the possibility of someone sneaking through.”

Read more: “I wake up with more purpose now.” Andre Agassi opens up about building a life after tennis

When Agassi played professionally, from 1986 to 2006, it was during an era of American dominance in the men’s game. He and Sampras spent long periods as the world number 1, following in the footsteps of U.S. champions from Stan Smith to John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. Today, though, European players like Federer and Nadal are the stars of men’s tennis. Andy Roddick was the last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title way back in 2003.

That same year, Agassi became the oldest number 1 tennis player at 33—a record since broken by Federer, who took the number 1 at the age of 36, after five years away from the top spot. Both had a late career surge, although Agassi insists that beyond that, his career bears little resemblance to Federer’s.

“He’s played a long time, certainly longer than me and surpassed me as the oldest number one, and he deserves to hold all those accolades.” But Agassi says unlike Federer, he went through more trials and tribulations, often ones that were “a bit more self-inflicted and desperate.”

When it comes to what Federer brings to the game, Agassi is simply a fan. “Watching him is watching history,” he says. “You see it every time with the way he conducts himself—with the fans, with his peers, with the media.

“I just have more appreciation than the average fan because he makes it look so easy and I actually think I know what it takes. And it’s truly remarkable.”

Agassi’s admiration for today’s champions doesn’t stop there. Speaking to TIME on Saturday, two days before Serena Williams announced her withdrawal from the French Open because of a pectoral injury, Agassi praised her return to the court after the birth of her child as a sign of her “determination, clarity, discipline, commitment and competitiveness.”

Mehdi Taamallah—NurPhoto/Getty ImagesSerena Williams attends the tennis match game during the Roland Garros Tournament in Paris, France, on June 2, 2018.

Much to the joy of fans worldwide, Williams, a 23-time grand slam winner, had played to form through three rounds in her grand slam comeback after giving birth to her daughter in September 2017. “It’s a challenge that probably equals a playing field for her, in many respects—which speaks to how great she is,” he says.

Agassi became a father himself while he was still playing professional tennis. His wife, the German tennis star Steffi Graf, gave birth to their son in 2001 and daughter in 2003. “Having children does change your perspective,” says Agassi. “I could never speak as a mother because there’s something about a mother’s love and commitment…not to mention what you go through physically.”

Though he couldn’t have predicted Williams’ withdrawal from the tournament, he understands the fight it takes to get back in the game. He says: “Seeing champions struggle and overcome adversity or difficulty, whatever that may be, is a pleasure. Success or failure, I respect that fight and that commitment.”

‘FAR: Lone Sails’: Is This the Best Apocalypse Game Since ‘Fallout’?

We don’t often know what caused the apocalypse, but it’s obvious that happens. The skeletal remains of a dead civilization dot the landscape. Half-buried by the swirling sands that stampede around the globe swallowing oceans, these ruins mournfully watch survivors scavenge for resources in their shadows. Freak storms flashing across the sky: their rain spiked with acid.

It’s bleak. So bleak.

The reason why it all ended up like this is rarely relevant. It’s the stories of those who remain we have a seemingly unquenchable thirst for. Fascinating examinations of what it means to be human. The good, the bad, the frequently ugly. After all these years and all this media, you know the apocalypse well. We’re sure.

Which is why FAR: Lone Sails by developer Okomotive makes such an impact. Out now on PC and heading to Xbox One and PS4 in the future, FAR: Lone Sails is unlike anything we’ve played before. This unique take on the apocalypse is, in its barest form, a sidescrolling platformer. But such labels criminally undersell it.

This is a game that carefully wraps you around its finger and tugs at your heart in bizarre ways, despite the lack of context and dialogue.

Your vehicle in FAR: Lone Sails
Your vehicle in FAR: Lone Sails

Powered by Steam

Don’t expect much preamble. It clearly time for our little hero to move on; that’s all you need to know. A small, near-shapeless bright red in a landscape drained of nearly all its colour, our hero has spent their post-apocalyptic time closeted away from the wasteland building a road train. A vehicle capable of carrying them from here to there.

Like something out of Mad Max, via Machinarium, this heaving beast is a fascinating piece of engineering. As soon as you lay eyes on it you’re intrigued and it quickly becomes evident that your first task is to work out how to get it moving.

It’s not much of a brain bender: your natural curiosity will lead you in the right direction. You need to collect rubbish from the world and place it into the train’s furnace to create the fuel needed to move forward. As this fuel burns, steam builds up, which you must release rhythmically to keep your engine from exploding.

How to get your vehicle pas this obstacle and across the bridge?
How to get your vehicle pas this obstacle and across the bridge?

With this simple gameplay mechanic mastered, you bust out the doors of your ramshackle home and begin motoring across the landscape towards… well, towards whatever lies at the other side.

It’s not safe out there. The harsh reality of the apocalypse beats at the side of your new, mobile home relentlessly, right from the off. Inside it’s cosy and warm, and as you’re forced to venture outside to collect more bits to burn or equipment to hang throughout the vehicle, the connection you form with your vehicle grows. It becomes a love affair.

Customising Your Ride

In the belly of the beast you may feel safe, but it’s far from capable of making the long journey across the sands when you begin. Things must have gotten desperate for you to risk all and leave.

At first you’ll fear running out of fuel and having to leg-it across open expanses in search of more. And as you push through the landscape, you will frequently come up against impassable structures. These require you to leave the safety of your mobile home and platform, then puzzle, to a solution.

There’s no timer or immediate threat to these moments, leaving you free to relax, explore, and think. But the solutions to each puzzle always open up the game to more surprises and possibilities. This includes upgrades to your vehicle. Before long your four-story ride is packed with various gadgets, mechanisms, and buttons that each act to help you push on against the odds.

While there are some thrills to be found here in much the same way a Metroidvania game unravels itself alongside ability upgrades, it’s not what makes FAR: Lone Sails sing its merry tune. Instead it’s the way they all combine to meet your single goal: to keep moving.

Setting sail to conserve fuel
Setting sail to conserve fuel

Before long you’re rhythmically dashing about the vehicle, loading fuel into the furnace, pushing the button that drives you forward, releasing steam at the perfect time to get a little nitro boost on a steep hill, and repeating. Then you begin getting mechanical failures or fires. You’ll have to hose down the flames or weld a part. Maybe the wind might turn favourable, allowing you to hoist a sail to try and conserve fuel.

It’s all terribly mundane work, but it’s balanced so well and with such simple and concise controls, that it’s addictive. There’s an instant proof-of-work system here where the analogue nature of every action produces a measurable result. It feels good to keep moving, even though you don’t know where you’re going.

A Stunning Piece of Art

The final and most vital piece to FAR: Lone Sails’ puzzle is its world design. It’s a truly beautiful game, both aurally and visually. In smaller spaces there is such intricate detail in the backdrop, that when you find yourself trundling through vast, barren landscapes, the contrast is just as impactful.

Watching the ruins of civilization come into view and then drift behind you creates an intense sense of isolation and sadness. At night, when the stars come out and darkness grips the play space, it manages to evoke a sense of fear and loss. Especially when electrical storms then ravage your only safe zone: your vehicle.

Inside a broken factory
Inside a broken factory

Special mention has to go to the audio, which does a tonne of the leg work in keeping the game’s pace and emotional resonance on point. The sound of rain hitting the steel body of your vessel is harsh and lonely. The hard, metal-on-metal clunk of your vehicle soldiering through the wasteland feels raw and desperate. Even the subtle change in the wind volume as you step in and out of the vehicle is just right.

Add the sparse, but perfect score that drifts in and out and it all comes together into something that can only be called, “art.”

Vitally, it’s this attention to detail and love in the design that makes you care about pushing on. With no story and no destination driving you forward, it’s the cathartic nature of keeping your vehicle running and the “what’s up ahead” mystery generated by the world design that plays the role of antagonist.

What are you doing here after all? Are you trying to find an end to the apocalypse? Or do you just have to keep moving? Either way, Okomotive’s subtle yet sublime take on post-apocalyptic adventuring is an experience you won’t forget.

How Has the World Changed Since ‘The Incredibles’ Came out in 2004?

It’s been 14 years since moviegoers first saw the Incredibles save the day by defeating the evil Syndrome, and the world has become a different place since we last saw Jack-Jack and his family in theaters.

While no time has passed in the upcoming sequel, which picks up the action right where the original left off, a lot has changed in the real world.

Ahead of Incredibles 2 arriving in theaters on June 15, let’s take a look at how life has evolved since we originally met the first family of Supers in 2004.

Pixar Is Bigger Than Ever

Pixar Animation Studios

Pixar was only nine years into making feature-length films, beginning with 1995’s Toy Story, when The Incredibles first premiered. And while both of those films were critical and commercial successes, the production company is now three times bigger than it was back in 2004 and has only gotten better with time.

The Incredibles was the first Pixar film that featured human beings as the main characters, giving them a wider range of facial expressions than ever before. But that was only the beginning. By the time that Brave was released in 2012, there was a visible improvement in the animation of human characters, including advancements in expressions and more realistic hair. Last year’s Coco was one of the most visually impressive films that the studio has ever released, so expect the upcoming superhero sequel to deliver a whole new level of awesome animation.

Superheroes Have Taken Over The World

Avengers
The Avengers

It may be hard to think back to a time before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the ruler of the cinematic world, but we hadn’t even been introduced to Iron Man or Captain America on the big screen back when The Incredibles was first released. And while films about heroes have been around forever, theaters are now more flooded with superhero flicks than ever before.

So with all that superhero saturation, how will Incredibles 2 stand out from the pack? Director Brad Bird says the answer is simple — family. The dichotomy between watching a nuclear family live out their mundane daily lives and witnessing them use their superpowers to save the world is what will make the film feel different from everything else that’s in theaters.

The #MeToo Movement

Elastigirl, Jack-Jack, and Mr. Incredible in 'Incredibles 2'
Elastigirl, Jack-Jack, and Mr. Incredible in 'Incredibles 2'

The superhero sequel is switching things up by having Mr. Incredible reluctantly stay home with the kids while his wife, Elastigirl, is the one out in the world fighting crime. Putting the focus on the female superhero and proving that she is just as capable as her husband is the perfect fit in 2018, with women in Hollywood and all over the world fighting for equality.

But as much as the film’s plot is a perfect reflection of current events, it’s actually just a coincidence that things turned out that way. Because of how long it takes to actually animate an entire film, it’s not really possible for creators to respond to what’s currently going on in the world. Bird actually said that he started imagining what it would be like to swap the roles of the patriarch and matriarch before the original film was even finished.

It’s not really surprising that Pixar was ahead of the curve when it comes to empowering its female characters, and we’ll get to see how the storyline pans out — and how great the animation is — when Incredibles 2 hits theaters on June 15.

Florida Mom Missing Since Mother’s Day Is Presumed Dead — and a Suspect Is Arrested in the Case

Florida police have arrested a woman in connection with the disappearance of a mom-of-three who didn’t pick up her children on Mother’s Day and hasn’t been seen since.

At a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said investigators arrested 50-year-old Kimberly Kessler — who authorities allege was the last person to see 34-year-old Joleen Jensen Cummings alive, according to local TV station WJXT.

Kessler, a co-worker at Tangles Hair Salon with Cummings, is charged with grand theft auto, First Coast News reports. She is also a suspect in Cummings’ disappearance, authorities said Tuesday.

She is being held in lieu of $ 500,000 bond.

Leeper said investigators have evidence to suggest that Cummings is dead but would not release it at this time.

Cummings was last seen leaving her job at Tangles in Fernandina Beach at 5 p.m. on May 12. She was supposed to meet up with her ex-husband in Hilliard on Mother’s Day to pick up her kids but she never showed up. Her mother, Anne Johnson, reported her missing on May 14.

Her beige 2006 Ford Expedition was discovered May 15 in the parking lot of a Home Depot near the salon in Yulee.

That same day, police went to the salon to speak with Kessler, but she didn’t show up to work from that point forward — and the address she had given to her boss was fake, police allege.

Later, investigators discovered surveillance video from 1:17 a.m. on May 13 that showed Kessler, who worked at the salon that day and had been employed there for about one month, parking Cummings’ SUV.

Police found Kessler, who went by the alias Jennifer Sybert, at a truck stop on May 16, First Coast News reports.

Police said Kessler is from Pennsylvania and had been using a fake social security number.

On Sunday, Cummings’ mother Anne Johnson posted an emotional message to Facebook about her missing daughter. “When parents shed tears about their children, I believe with all my heart that God hears those prayers of lament, and all of us can agree that when our kids hurt and go through difficulties that we as a parent shed tears,”

“Today is the 7th day we are without my daughter,” she continued. “Today is 7 days her children are without their mother. Today is 7 days that her brother and sister are without their sister. Today is 7 days that her close friends are without their friend. Let’s bring Joleen home!”

It was not immediately clear if Kessler has retained an attorney.

5 things I’ve done since having a baby I was told I’d never do again

by

Jamie Reed

posted in Parenting

It’s a bit of a shock to realize my baby will be 5 months old this week. In some ways it feels as if he’s been controlling my life an adorable addition for much longer, and in other ways it’s like I only just found out I was pregnant.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about all the “helpful” advice people gave me before the baby, telling me all the things I’d never do again, now that I was going to be a mom. (I wrote about that  here.)

Not only have I done ALL of the things, I’ve done them quite a bit. Moms-to-be, don’t panic. Here are the things you’ll still get to do after having a baby:

1. Go out to eat

Granted I did pretty much stay tucked away in my house for the first couple of months of my baby’s life, but that was really due to the crazy cold/flu season we experienced. Once my pediatrician said things were calming down, we broke out of the house and have taken the baby all over the place. I imagine eating with a toddler will prove challenging in other ways, but for now, he’s pretty easy to transport wherever we decide to go.

mom and baby in restaurant

2. Travel

While I haven’t taken the baby on any big trips yet, I have done a little traveling on my own recently. A few days in California were quite lovely and I was really refreshed when I got home. My husband and I also have a couple of weekend trips planned for the summer, both with and without the baby. Is it harder to travel with a baby? Sure. It helps that we have grandparents near by and a pretty content baby.

landscape from airplane

3. Sleep through the night

When I was close to the end of my pregnancy I was sharing some fears with a friend. So many people were telling me sleep horror stories (and just general baby horror stories) and they were getting in my head. My friend listened to my fears and said, “You know, some babies actually do sleep. You might get one of those.” Huh.

Even better than hearing those hopeful words? The fact that she was right.

So far, my son has always been a good sleeper. We had to wake him up in the beginning to eat. When he hit 3-4 months he was sleeping 4-6 hours at a time during the night and now that he’s 5 months old? He’s sleeping 7-10 hours solid a night! (And yes, I know that not everyone gets a baby who’s a great sleeper, but, pregnant moms, don’t panic just yet. It can happen to you!)

4. Take a shower

Were there days in the beginning where I wore the same outfit for three days solid and couldn’t remember the last time I washed my hair? Definitely. But things settled down and now I’m bathing at least a couple of times of month. 😉

baby playing on mat

That play mat goes everywhere, including the bathroom while I shower and dry my hair! He’s not too sure about the hair dryer…

5. Wear something other than yoga pants

I wear sweat pants too!

Sure, some days are spent in the clothes I slept in, but in my defense that happened pre-baby too. (I work from home.) I actually like getting dressed for the day, even if the only person who gets to appreciate my outfit is an adorable drool-machine. Though I will say wearing heels again after months of flats during pregnancy has been an adjustment. I feel like I’m a kid playing dress-up.

mother and baby in clothing store

Proof I put on “real” clothes AND leave the house occasionally!

It’s been reassuring that so many things have returned to how they were. My husband and I spend our evenings making and eating dinner, catching our favorite television shows, and trying to make plans for the days ahead. As big as an adjustment a baby is (and yes, it’s a BIG adjustment), life will take on a new normal. You’ll eventually find some form of a routine, and carry on almost like you did before. Almost.

Have you managed to do any of the things people say you wouldn’t do post baby?

Carrie Underwood Shares Selfie as She Performs at the Grand Ole Opry for First Time Since Accident

Carrie Underwood is returning to her roots.

The Grammy Award winner gave a rousing performance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday night to celebrate her 10-year anniversary since she became a member of the legendary concert hall.

Underwood, 35, shared a selfie of herself on Instagram before taking the stage, writing in the caption, “10 year anniversary #OprySelfie @opry ❤❤❤.”

The Grand Ole Opry’s Instagram account also shared videos of the momentous occasion on its Instagram Story. As part of her set, the singer sang some of her hits including “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Cry Pretty” and “Temporary Home.” She also sang a Randy Travis classic, “An Old Pair of Shoes.”

To round out the night, Underwood was surprised by Travis himself onstage with a bouquet of flowers. It was a full circle moment as it was Travis who invited Underwood to join the institution during a show in March 2008.

In a photo of Travis and Underwood, the institution wrote in the caption, “A surprise visit from RANDY TRAVIS to celebrate!”

Another caption on the same photo read, “It was Randy Travis who invited @carrieunderwood to join the #Opry 10 years ago, and he made a surprise visit to celebrate with her tonight! ✨ #OnlyTheOpry.”

While onstage, Underwood told the cheering crowd, “This is my anniversary tonight. And we are very glad that you guys are here to celebrate with us!”

Underwood has been hard at work for her forthcoming album, titled Cry Pretty — her first work since she fell down the steps of her home and needed over 40 stitches on her face.

Last week, the mother of one released the music video for her album’s first single, “Cry Pretty,” in which the star can be seen crying in the shower before making a triumphant return to the stage and handling the pressures of fame.

She opened up to Today show’s Hoda Kotb about the accident and her recovery from the facial injuries and a broken wrist.

“Plain and simple, it was just kind of a freak accident,” Underwood told Kotb. “I just fell. I just tripped taking my dogs out to do their business. It could happen to anybody.”

She added, “I say if I would have fallen anywhere else, it wouldn’t have been a problem. There was one little step that I went to catch myself on and I missed.”

Where Is Tim Cunningham? Morehouse Grad Missing Since He Left Work

Timothy “Tim” Cunningham left work at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) early on February 12 because he was sick.

Thing is, no one has seen or heard from him since.

Family, friends and now the Atlanta Police Department have been searching far and wide, but have come up empty-handed. Now his friends have started a GoFundMe page; where they have raised $ 20,000 as a reward for any information leading to his safe return.

Cunningham, 35, casually known as Tim, attended Morehouse College with social justice journalist Shaun King. He then went on to continue his education at Harvard, earning two graduate degrees, including a doctorate.

His parents drove all night long from their Maryland home to Atlanta to search for their son.

“It’s not the type of news you want to hear,”  his father, Terrell Cunningham, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday. “Your child is missing. Thirty-five years old, but always your child.”

He added, “This is not normal. This is definitely out of the ordinary.”

College mate King also made a plea on social media seeking help in finding his friend.

According to a conversation the elder Cunningham had with NBC News

“Tim had been in communication with us extensively on Sunday [Feb. 11], and I pinpoint Sunday because there were some exchanges via phone as well as text that alerted me to be concerned about our son,” Terrell Cunningham said.

Cunningham’s parents said they became increasingly worried when Tim didn’t return any texts or phone calls. When they had extended family members check on his house in Atlanta, they found it empty. But it was particularly alarming that two windows were open. Tim’s parents say that is unusual for their son.

Moreover, they said they found his phone, wallet, keys, and car undisturbed. His beloved dog Beau also was also there, they added.

“Tim never leaves Beau unattended,” Mr. Cunningham said. “He just doesn’t do it.”

The missing grad’s mother also made a public plea to her son in the event he is able to see the media coverage.

Tim Cunningham is obviously loved and well-respected in hid Atlanta community.

According to friends…

“He has this pristine service record and background, and then he’s also the guy you can call to help you move furniture or get together with you at a restaurant at the end of a long day,” said Calloway, who also knew Cunningham from college and has maintained a close relationship with him over the years.

Readers, please don’t hesitate to jump onboard the search for this man, especially if you live in the Atlanta area. The Atlanta Police Dept is also hoping to hear from you should you have any information about Tim. You can reach them via the Homicide/Adult Missing Persons Unit at (404)546-4235

It’s On Sale: Denim Repairs

Ever since the raw denim revival has blown up in the US, dozens of specialty repair shops have cropped up to help people preserve their favorite pair of jeans. Denim is a hardy fabric, but – when worn day-in, day-out – even the best-made jeans will start wearing thin. And, at some point, they’ll develop holes.

I get my jeans repaired about once a year at Denim Therapy. They’re just one of the many shops nowadays that specialize in something known as darning, which is where a seamstress covers up a hole by essentially “weaving” in new material. The result is sturdier than a simple patch job – which is what you’ll get at a more common alterations tailor – and when done with matching threads, it’ll look a lot less conspicuous. Which is good for areas like, you know, your crotch.

At the moment, Denim Therapy is offering a 15% discount on all reweaving repairs. If you’re outside of NYC and can’t drop your jeans off at their shop, you’ll have to mail them in. For a basic repair, as well as the cost of shipping back and forth, you can expect to pay between $ 50 and $ 75. That’s about the price of entry-level raw denim nowadays, but this way, you get to wear your favorite pair of jeans a bit longer. And like with good leather shoes, the charm of denim is all about how the material looks as it ages.

Note, in order to get the discount, your jeans have to be in their shop by March 9th. If you’re mailing these in, factor in a week for shipping. You can also see this post for some examples of things I’ve had done at Denim Therapy

An American Woman Just Won the NYC Marathon for the First Time Since 1977

(NEW YORK) — Shalane Flanagan dethroned Mary Keitany on Sunday and became the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since 1977, potentially ending her decorated career with her first major marathon victory.

Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya won the men’s race, holding off countryman Wilson Kipsang by 3 seconds for his first major victory.

Keitany had won three straight New York marathons, but Flanagan pulled away from the Kenyan great with about three miles to go. Flanagan finished in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds, about a minute faster than Keitany.

The American cried and yelled as she approached the finish line all alone.

“It’s indescribable,” the 36-year-old Flanagan said. “It’s a moment I’m trying to soak up and savor.”

The last American woman to win New York was Miki Gorman, who took consecutive titles in 1976-77.

Flanagan finished second in New York for her first marathon in 2010 but hadn’t run this race since. This was her first marathon since finishing sixth at the Rio Games due to a fracture in her lower back. The injury kept her out of the Boston Marathon in the spring but set her up to train hard for New York with an eye on Keitany.

Flanagan had called Keitany “the alpha racer” and said she was ready to “suffer dearly” while keeping pace with the unpredictable Kenyan.

Flanagan, Keitany and Ethiopia’s Mamitu Daska were step-and-step until the 24th mile. Keitany never made a move, though, and Flanagan hit the jets to pull away, keeping a stern face until getting emotional near the finish in Central Park.

On the podium, Flanagan put her hands over face and began to cry again when she was announced the winner. She turned to hug Keitany before accepting her medal.

“This is the moment I’ve dreamed off since I was a little girl,” Flanagan said.

Flanagan had said she may retire if she won New York. She didn’t immediately make an announcement regarding her future.

Kamworor edged Kipsang with a time of 2:10:53. Kamworor separated from the pack late and seemed like he would cruise to his first major marathon victory, but Kipsang appeared on his heels in the final stretch.

Kipsang didn’t have enough to catch Kamworor, though. The 24-year-old winner kissed the pavement right after crossing the finish, then turned to embrace Kipsang.

American running great and 2009 New York winner Meb Keflezighi completed his 26th and final marathon in 11th place at 2:15:29, collapsing as he crossed the finish.

“Thank you New York for showing up today,” Keflezighi told the crowd. “Cheering me on and showing that vibrant energy.”

The race went off without interruption five days after the bike path terror attack killed eight in lower Manhattan. Police had promised an unprecedented effort to secure the course, a plan including hundreds of extra uniformed patrol and plainclothes officers, roving teams of counterterrorism commandos armed with heavy weapons, bomb-sniffing dogs and rooftop snipers.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was expecting 2 million fans to line the course.

“New York City said strongly we’re not giving into terrorists,” de Blasio said, adding “That’s a message we’re sending the whole world.”

Beverly Ramos ran the race with a Puerto Rican flag headband two months after her home island was ravaged by Hurricane Maria. Like many in Puerto Rico, Ramos was without power after the storm. Still, she decided to continue training near San Juan, seeking out safe places to run amid the wreckage.

Comedian Kevin Hart made his marathon debut at New York. Forget about chasing gold — the actor and fitness nut was mostly worried about avoiding humiliation.

“I don’t want to see a bunch of memes of me looking weird out here,” Hart said shortly before starting.

Woman says she has been a victim of ID theft around 15 times since September

A woman in Washington state is speaking out after falling victim to identity theft around 15 times since early September, according to a local news station. That time period roughly matches when Equifax divulged to the public that it was the victim of a massive data breach — and the Seattle woman thinks the two incidents are related.

Her story illustrates the nightmarish ordeal that can begin after someone steals your personal information. The Equifax breach exposed more than 145.5 million people to identity theft, meaning their names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and, in some cases, even their credit card numbers are in danger of being accessed by unknown numbers of criminals.

Katie Van Fleet told KOMO-TV that it all started when she got a letter thanking her for opening a line of credit at Barneys New York. She did no such thing, so she reported it as fraud and thought everything was okay.

Sleepless in Seattle: Woman says she’s been a victim of ID theft more than a dozen times

Then came a deluge of letters from other companies and stores, welcoming her and thanking her for opening new credit lines.

“I didn’t think this would ever happen to me,” Van Fleet told KOMO. “So it’s been very frustrating. I feel extremely violated that somebody out there has my information, and I’m dealing with the repercussions of this.”

Trying to be proactive, Van Fleet said that she put a fraud alert on her account — but that didn’t stop anything. She soon got a notice that someone had opened an account with T-Mobile in her name and charged more than $ 3,000 on it.

According to the TV station, she only recently got the bogus charges to stop after putting a freeze on her credit.

This is why money expert Clark Howard is so adamant about credit freezes. He says it is the No. 1 way to stop identity fraud.

A lot of people think they are safeguarding their personal info when they get — or even worse, pay for — a fraud alert, but they are mistaken.

The difference between a fraud alert and a credit freeze can be illustrated this way: A fraud alert tells you somebody’s in your home. A credit freeze locks all the doors to your home.

Credit Freeze Guide: The best protection against ID theft

Clark says not to make the mistake of only contacting Equifax when trying to freeze your credit. “It’s imperative that you freeze your credit with all three main credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion,” he says in our Credit Freeze Guide. Here is the contact info for the agencies:

Clark is also a big proponent of setting up free credit monitoring with Credit Karma, which gives users online access to their credit reports anytime they like.

Here are some videos of the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” cast recording “Let’s Generalize About Men” because it’s been stuck in our heads since Friday

Here are some videos of the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” cast recording “Let’s Generalize About Men” because it’s been stuck in our heads since Friday

Here are some videos of the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” cast recording “Let’s Generalize About Men” because it’s been stuck in our heads since Friday

Ever since the third season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premiered this Friday, everyone has been spontaneously breaking out in song. More specifically, everyone is singing the episode’s breakout hit, “Let’s Generalize About Men,” because it’s the hilarious misandrist anthem that the world needs right now.

One of the best things about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is that Rebecca Bunch manages to say what everyone wishes they could say (or, in this case, sing) while also pointing out just how ridiculous it is. “Let’s Generalize About Men” is the perfect example of why Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is one of the best shows on TV. It satisfyingly expresses things that are annoying about men while also poking holes in the broad generalizations people make when talking smack with their friends.

Because the lyrics of “Let’s Generalize About Men” are just so perfect, we want to know more about it. And that’s when the beauty of social media really becomes palpable. That’s because Rachel Bloom, the brains behind Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and the actress who plays Rebecca Bunch, shared some behind the scenes videos from creating the masterpiece on her Instagram. And they’re so much fun.

In one Instagram post, Rachel Bloom showed the girls practicing the choreography.

Yes! Bloom, Donna Lynne Champlin (who plays Paula), Gabrielle Ruiz (who plays Valencia), and Vella Lovell (who plays Heather) look so amazing while body-rolling and singing the hilarious lyrics, “Let’s get super lit and not admit this is some kind of primal ritual we need now and then.”

In another video, Bloom shows the ladies singing the song at the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend table read.

If you’ve ever wanted to be a fly on the wall to see how all of the actors might react to some of the show’s outrageous songs, this is your chance.

Yeah, it’s pretty exciting that we get to see Josh’s reaction to Bloom singing, “There are not exceptions, all three million men are like this!” Considering that Josh left Rebecca at the alter, her character needs to denigrate and denounce the entire male gender, and doing that with one’s girlfriends really is a part of the healing process after a bad breakup.

We’ve all been there.

Laughing is also important, and “Let’s Generalize About Men” successfully satirizes the wine-infused nights shared among a group of girls who just need to make unfounded statements about why men are terrible. Like saying, “All every man does everyday is watch porn, eat wings, burp, fart, and snore.”

It’s all in good fun on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. And “Let’s Generalize About Men” is just about one of the funniest songs ever made.

Maria Sharapova Wins Her First Grand Slam Match Since Her Drug Ban

Maria Sharapova’s trademark grunt was back at the U.S. Open on Monday night, as was her signature style — for her first round match, she appeared in a black outfit by designer Riccardo Tisci and Nike. Her shot-making and swagger were back too. Sharapova, the five-time Grand Slam champion, former world number one, and the most controversial player in her sport, won her first Grand Slam tournament match since serving a 15-month drug ban, beating world No. 2 Simona Halep, of Romania in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Though the New York crowd offered Halep more vocal support when the players arrived on the court, if anyone booed Sharapova, it was barely audible. Americans have shown a willingness to forgive athletes who’ve taken performance-enhancing drugs. The fans in Arthur Ashe stadium were no different.

Sharapova entered the match with a 6-0 career record against Halep, and this match showed why. Sharapova served heavy, hit all the angles, and covered more ground than her opponent. Halep would not go quietly; she won four straight games in the second set to force a decisive third. But Sharapova refused to beat herself up for losing the lead: she promptly went up 3-0 in the final set before holding on.

With Serena Williams sidelined, and the women’s field unusually wide open, a redemptive run to a second U.S. Open title for Sharpova — who received a wild card invite to the tournament, she’s ranked so low — is far from out of the question.

If Sharapova pulls that off, she’d have risen from the very depths of her once storied career. In June of 2016, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) banned Sharapova for two years after she tested positive for meldonium, a heart medication that has been shown to have potential performance-enhancing benefits. Sharapova has said she’d taken meldonium since 2006, but the drug wasn’t added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned substance list until the fall of 2015 (the ban took effect on January 1, 2016).

She tested positive for the drug at the 2016 Australian Open, the last Grand Slam tournament she played in since before this one. She claimed she hadn’t realized that WADA banished the drug; an ITF tribunal concluded that Sharapova had not intentionally doped, but “she does bear sole responsibility” for “failing to take any steps to check whether the continued use of this medicine was permissible.” On appeal, her two-year ban was shortened to 15 months.

So Sharapova returned to the court in April. Her ranking was too low for her to automatically qualify for the French Open, or Wimbledon; the organizers of neither tournament extended her a Wild Card invite. (She did not request one for Wimbledon, and missed the qualifying rounds because of injury). U.S. Open officials, however, welcomed Sharapova, now ranked No. 146, to New York for this year’s event.

Some players have criticized Sharapova’s return. Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard labeled her a “cheater,” and said she should be banned for life. Bouchard, 23, said that before she played Sharapova at the Madrid Open in May, players she normally didn’t talk to privately wished her luck.

“I’m not oblivious,” Sharapova wrote in a first-person essay published on the Players’ Tribune in July. “I’m aware of what many of my peers have said about me, and how critical of me some of them have been in the press. If you’re a human being with a normal, beating heart, you know … I don’t think that sort of thing will ever fully be possible to ignore. And I don’t think it will ever not be weird or hurtful to go through.”

After winning match point, she fell to the ground, and held a hand to her mouth, a clear gesture of disbelief. She also blew kisses to an enthusiastic crowd. Yes, Sharapova will likely never win back the trust of some players and fans. But a second act is now firmly in her hands. And it got off to a magnificent start in New York.

Has Racism in the Workplace Increased Since Donald Trump Became President? This Black Executive Notices a Difference

week Credit: ARTPUPPY

Dear Sheree,

I am a 45-year-old, African American, male, who is general counsel for a small firm.

Traveling is a big part of my work, and [while on these business trips], I’ve started to notice a trend that has me concerned. When boarding a flight with unassigned seatings, I always select an aisle seat. A person will usually take the window seat. However, unless the flight is totally sold out, no one wants to sit in the middle seat—next to me. I’ve also noticed a subtle shift in white females who work for me.

All of this has resulted in me looking at the racial implications on a deeper level. Do I accept all of this as a sign of a greater prevalence of racial disharmony resulting from the Trump presidency?

Michael

Dear Michael,

There is no mistaking the fact race relations have undergone a dramatic shift in the last few months.  However, this does not mean that personal biases or prejudices had not existed before; the difference is that people are more comfortable with expressing their feelings.

In my experience, when people have the opportunity to choose a seat on a flight, they often try to avoid sitting next to anyone that is traveling with a small or child, as well as sitting in the middle seat. I firmly believe there are more fair-minded, good people than those who are quick to make a snap judgment based on the color of a person’s skin. People of color must see this period as an opportunity to expand our toolsets as well as our relationships, to sustain ourselves in these interesting times.

Also, many individuals have a lot of things going on in their lives that we may not even realize. So, it’s important we must interact with others, while being aware of and sensitive to the fact that everyone is dealing with something.

You mentioned noticing a shift within the white females who work in your department; my question is, when was the last time you made an effort to connect with them?  As the general counsel of your firm, you have the opportunity to create the tone for your company. It’s your responsibility to spark a deeper connection with your staff. It could be via a casual brown-bag lunch experience you organize, where everyone sits together to address their concerns and share ideas once a month.

Here is a quote from my book, Intuition: The Hidden Asset Everyone Should Learn to Use, that may help inspire you:

“Many people mistakenly think that a large budget is needed to implement change in an organization.  In reality, small changes produce subtle shifts that have lasting impact on a group.”

Finally, as minorities, we must be aware of the opportunity to learn during these changing times. Oftentimes, when we take the time to self-examine during a particularly trying period, our learning accelerates, as opposed to times in which everything seems to be running smoothly. I remember growing up when there were a variety of black businesses, which offered services in my neighborhood. In order to become self-sufficient while crossing color boundaries within our industries, we need to get back to building opportunities. Have you noticed that, when people attend sports events, they pull together— regardless of race—and scream and encourage their team to win? We need to join together to make things better.

Four Young Pennsylvania Men Missing Since Last Week; Authorities Suspect Foul Play

Pennsylvania authorities are searching for four young men who went missing in the past week.

Jimi Tar Patrick, 19, vanished last Wednesday. Two days later, Mark Sturgis, 22, Tom Meo, 21, and Dean Finocchiaro, 18, all vanished.

In a press conference on Monday afternoon, Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub was asked if he believed foul play was involved. “I sure believe there is,” he replied, adding that authorities are treating the case “as a criminal investigation at this time.”

At least five municipal police departments, the Bucks County Sheriff, Pennsylvania State Police and the FBI are involved in searching multiple locations for any trace of the men. “It’s all hands on deck,” Weintraub told reporters. “The investigation is very serious and very sensitive.”

Investigators are focused on a large farm near where the men were last seen. They have taken the farm owner’s 20-year-old son into custody on an unrelated firearms charge. He is being questioned by police.

Meanwhile, cops are trying to determine how the men knew each other.  Sturgis and Meo are longtime friends who work in construction for Sturgis’ father. Finocchiaro is a mutual friend of theirs. It’s unclear whether Patrick knows any or all of the men.

Police have brought in heavy equipment to search the 68-acre farm, including a backhoe. Weintraub says that the search could go on for days. “It’s like finding needles in a haystack,” he said at the news conference. “We’re not exactly sure what we’re going to find there.”

While police continue their search, the men’s families are praying for their safety — and are trying to keep a positive attitude. “At this point, as the hours pass, it seems more and more grim,” Sturgis’ father, Mark Potash, told Philly.com. “It is very difficult. I really don’t know how I’m going to make it through the rest of the day. I’m going minute by minute right now.”

Anyone with information about the men’s whereabouts is asked to call the investigation’s tip line at (215) 297-8201.

Here’s A List Of Every Single Trump Lie Since He Took Office

It’s easier to count the days President Donald Trump hasn’t lied.

A New York Times editorial says the president has only managed to be falsehood free 39 total days in his first sixth months in office.

Authors David Leonhardt and Stuart A. Thompson listed every single lie the president has said since taking office six months ago. They say Trump started his administration with a 40-day lying streak, only managing to go fib-free for the first time on March 1.

They set a conservative bar for what constitutes a lie, but say Trump’s “long pattern of using untruths to serve his purposes, as a businessman and politician, means that his statements are not simply careless errors.”

As this Twitter post points out: The font in the article is very, very small.

“I wasn’t a fan of Iraq. I didn’t want to go into Iraq,” states the first Trump quote listed posted on Jan. 21. The latest one, dated June 21 is “Right now, we are one of the highest-taxed nations in the world.”

Yes, we know. It’s highly likely Trump will be adding to this list while you’re reading through this collection.

In the meantime, take a look back and at some of the more egregious falsehoods made by the president:

  •  Jan. 25: “Now, the audience was the biggest ever. But this crowd was massive. Look how far back it goes. This crowd was massive.”

  • March 22: “NATO, obsolete, because it doesn’t cover terrorism. They fixed that.”

  • April 18: “The fake media goes, ‘Donald Trump changed his stance on China.’ I haven’t changed my stance.”

  • May 4: “Nobody cares about my tax return except for the reporters.”

Katy Perry Arrives at iHeartRadio Music Awards in First Appearance Since Split from Orlando Bloom

Katy Perry stunned on the red carpet at Sunday’s iHeartRadio Music Awards and will bring her latest single “Chained to the Rhythm” to the stage yet again in her first public appearance since she announced her split from Orlando Bloom.

Perry, 32, has been busy promoting the song, also performing at the BRIT Awards in the U.K. and the Grammys in Los Angeles.

She even sported a new ‘do — plus a pantsuit — at the annual show, flaunting her blonde pixie haircut. She initially revealed the hair style in an Instagram post, writing, “I WASNT READY TILL NOW.”

After radio host Elvis Duran remarked on the media scrutiny of her new look, Perry joked, “Well yeah, if you’re going this extreme it should, hello! I’m trying to get more attention.”  She added, “You can just grow it back. Honestly, I tried to take platinum and I had a lot of breakage. I always wanted to have that pixie haircut so I said, ‘Let’s just go for it.’ I want to redefine what it means to be feminine.”

In true Perry fashion, the “Teenage Dream” singer is expected to give a high-energy performance — featuring some small children, if her Saturday Instagram post is any indication.

RELATED LINK: Before the Break: A Look Back at Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s Cutest Photos Together

Just days before the show, Perry took to Twitter to shut down any rumors of a drama-filled breakup.

“HOW BOUT A NEW WAY OF THINKING FOR 2017!? U can still b friends & love ur former partners! No one’s a victim or a villain, get a life y’all,” she tweeted.

“Before rumors or falsifications get out of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time,” both their reps said Tuesday in a statement to PEOPLE.

All seemed to be well in the pair’s relationship as Bloom, 40, celebrated Perry’s 32nd birthday with her in October and the former love birds spent time with each other’s families. Bloom and Perry jetted off on PDA-filled vacations and even went all out for Halloween together.

However, a Perry source recently told PEOPLE that the romance was “never really supposed to be serious.”

“When it first started, she was basically like ‘This will be fun for now,’ ” the source sad. A insider close to Bloom told PEOPLE that the actor was “happy and content” spending time with Perry, but “was not in the mindset to settle down.”

Bloom’s pal said that the relationship had been “shaky” for awhile, adding that there was “nothing dramatic or over the top,” but the stars simply drifted apart.

The Perry source noted that the relationship “just became more and more work to make it work.”

“This really wasn’t a bad breakup for her,” the source said. “ was a lot harder for her. This just ran its course.”

The pair began dating back in January 2016 with a source telling PEOPLE then that they looked “very happy.” They grew closer throughout the year, and a source told PEOPLE in August: “ would love to settle down with Katy and have more kids.”

This Will Be The Whitest Oscars Since 1998

Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and other white people kindly welcome you to the whitest Oscars since 1998. Yes, unfortunately, you read that right: Without a nod for David Oyelowo announced this morning (see white person Brad Pitt for help on that pronunciation) 2015 will be the worst year for diversity in Hollywood since the 70th annual ceremony.

This is especially troubling when you consider that last year’s Oscars was a banner year with a Best Supporting Actress award for Lupita Nyong’o (and Steve McQueen taking home the Best Picture title). As Chris Rock can tell you, there are still far too few people of color in the industry, but at least one non-white person has been nominated each year in the four acting categories since the last whitest Oscars ever nearly two decades ago. Here’s the whole list:

2014 Lupita Nyong’o, Barkhad Abdi and Chiwetel Ejiofor
2013 Denzel Washington and Quevenzhane Wallis
2012 Demian Bichir, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer
2011 Javier Bardem
2010 Gabourey Sidibe, Monique, Penelope Cruz, Morgan Freeman and Hailee Steinfeld
2009 Taraji P. Henson
2008 Ruby Dee and Javier Bardem
2007 Forest Whitaker, Will Smith, Djimon Honsou, Penelope Cruz, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi
2006 Terrence Howard
2005 Jamie Foxx, Don Cheadle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sophie Okonedo, Morgan Freeman and Jamie Foxx
2004 Djimon Honsou, Ken Watanabe, Benicio del Toro, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Keisha Castle-Hughes
2003 Salma Hayek and Queen Latifah
2002 Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Halle berry and Ben Kingsley
2001 Javier Bardem and Benicio del Toro
2000 Denzel Washington, Michael Clarke Duncan
1999 Fernanda Montenegro
1998 … no one

Predictions that this would be a particularly pale year sprung up after the Gold Derby predictions were posted as a preemptive warning for what we could expect from the “overwhelmingly white” group of males that comprises the Academy.

#OscarNoms No female directors, screenwriters, or cinematographers. No actors of color. #diversity,” CNN’s David Daniel tweeted after the nominations were announced.

If there’s a lesson to be learned here it’s that we have a long way to go before we can truly talk about progress being made. Also: this sucks.

8 Lessons I Have Learned Since Giving Up Television

The day my cable was turned off for good, I was lying on my bed in the midst of the afternoon watching a reality show about people with odd sexual compulsions. As the cable guy cut my connection, a guy describing his fetish for smelly feet was interrupted mid-sentence.

“God took my cable away,” I texted my daughter.

I was joking, but, honestly, my obsession with TV had gotten out of hand, and while I’m sure there are some quality programs on television, I wasn’t watching any of them. In 2011, I had watched the entire Casey Anthony trial on CNN, and even though we lived hundred of miles from the nearest ocean, it was not unusual for me to spend a whole evening staring at maps of potential hurricane paths on The Weather Channel. And as if that weren’t enough, lately, I had become fascinated with reality shows like Honey Boo-Boo, 19 Kids And Counting, Hoarders, Breaking Amish and Sister Wives. These shows had made me feel better about myself — more clever, more classy, more together.

I might be moving from a gray Cape Cod in the country to a rustic cabin in the woods with no cable access, but at least I did not have a family of dead cats lying underneath the pile of open food cans in the midst of my living room. I did not eat laundry detergent. I had not yet been the subject of an intervention, drug related or otherwise. I did not eat spaghetti noodles doused in ketchup and butter. I had not been shunned. I did not have to drag nineteen children with me everywhere I went. And I certainly did not have to pretend to be pleased when my husband expressed his undying affection for another woman.

Though learning to live without television was a challenge at first, just last month, we passed the second anniversary of our new life here at the cabin, and at the risk of sounding overly hippyish, I thought this might be a good time to pause and reflect on some things I have learned and to offer a few nuggets of wisdom to those considering cutting their own cable connections:

1. I have figured out that one does not need to watch The Weather Channel regularly to know what the weather is going to be like. I have figured out that generally one can just walk outside and look at the sky and get a good idea of what’s ahead for the day.

2. I no longer mindlessly peruse quasi news channels thinking that I am getting actual news, and I no longer watch the disturbing stories of celebrities unfold before me ad nauseum because I find these stories to be, well, disturbing. I do not know what celebrity has just been arrested for shoplifting, whose spouse just slept around, who is in rehab or who is eerily thin. I have just so much emotional energy to give, and now I can expend that energy on people I actually know who have legal troubles or marital problems or addiction issues or eating disorders.

3. It has been two years since anyone has even tried to talk to me about The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. Same with American Idol or any of those shows imitating American Idol. In fact, people actually stop discussing those things when I walk in a room. Enough said.

4. I’ve got to admit that the Olympics were hard. As was the World Cup and every other major sporting event. Everyone is always talking about sports, especially at bars where sports are always on big screen TV’s and sometimes on multiple screens, but my advice for those televsionless folks trying to maintain some sort of social connectivity during major sporting events is to simply drink more beer. That way, you will be at a bar when the television is on and can quickly catch up to speed. Another option is to take up a sport of your own so that while everyone else is sitting around drinking beer and watching sports, you can actually be out longboarding or free climbing or what have you.

5. I no longer begin sentences with the words, “I was up late last night watching…” If I happened to be up late last night, I was (1) reading, (2) writing, (3) cuddling my Dachshund who is afraid of thunderstorms or (4) cuddling my husband who is not afraid of thunderstorms. In any case, there is not nearly enough of that sort of thing happening in the world today, and now that I no longer mindlessly watch television, I have more time for all of those things.

6. Like major sporting events, the Oscars and the Emmys are a problem. Everyone is watching, and everyone is tweeting about them, and, sure, it’s a little like being back in high school, and everyone you know is talking about some party that you weren’t invited to. For advice on coping, please see #4.

7. Back when I had television, I used to spend a lot of time worrying about the what ifs. What if we have a major earthquake here in North Carolina? What if one of my friends gets a nose job that collapses? What if one of my young adult children suddenly joins a cult? What if my husband has a whole other family in another state and one day fakes his own death in order to be with them? Now, I take long walks with my Lab. I feed Vanilla Wafers to my goats. I pick wild blueberries and roses. I sit outside at a local brewery and drink Dale’s Pale Ale while I watch other people’s kids play corn hole. And somehow being outside and doing simple things makes me feel more in touch with the here and now and less concerned with the hypothetical.

8. I have taken up some new hobbies. I ride my bike — a lot. I hike. I make my own goat cheese and cream cheese, ferment my own yogurt. I grow my own kale and bake my own whey pies. I am learning about jazz and blues, and I have signed up for a poetry class and for contra dance lessons. The point is, when you are not watching television and thinking about inane things like how on earth someone could give birth nineteen times and still be walking around or how a human being could not notice she had a cat carcass rotting on her living room floor, your world opens up a bit, and suddenly you realize that even if you don’t want to make your own yogurt or pen your own chapbook, maybe, just maybe, there is something else out there for you to discover.

10 Jobs I’m Now Qualified for Since Adding Parenting to My Resume

Although I’ve been home with my kids for the last 5 years, I have never thought of my situation as a permanent break from the workforce.

Don’t get me wrong; I have absolutely no regrets with my current at-home position. I love being able to be here at this stage in the game, and I’m so grateful to be in a position to do it. However, there are some aspects that I miss though that come with having a career outside of the home, like the adult interaction, for example. That’s one of the main reasons I started blogging.

Conversations with my then 5, 3, and 1 year old kids could only take an adult so far. You start to realize that your brain needs another level of engagement when you seriously start getting sassy with Dora and answering, “The Map! It’s the #@%$ Map again!”

Next year my youngest will be starting all day Kindergarten, so recently I’ve been thinking about what I’ll be doing with my free time while all three kids are in school all day. Will I finally have more time for my writing? Should I attempt to rejoin the workforce? Will I just be sitting around in my PJ pants, eating bon-bons and watching soap operas?

Each scenario clearly has its benefits.

Thinking through this a little further I wondered, What would I do if I did return to the workforce? Would I go back to corporate training (which was my last gig), or perhaps I could try something new? My initial concern was with my five year resume gap, but then, as I thought about parenting as a job itself, I realized that it has given me all kinds of new skills! In fact, should I decide to return to work, I’d have many new career opportunities to choose from thanks to all the new qualifications I’ve developed since becoming a parent.

1. Cruise Director
From the time my kids were old enough to sit up on their own, even before they were able to speak, I’ve been getting the look that says, “Entertain me!” Of course, now they are old enough to speak, and unless it’s allotted screen time, I usually have at least one kid per 20 minutes audibly expressing their boredom and their need to tell me they don’t know what to do. I can’t say they always like my suggestions. So whether cruise activities were swimming, playing shuffle board, or cleaning their own cabins, this cruise director can always find something to do.

2. Hostage Negotiator
You may think I’m being dramatic, or that there would be no way that without proper training I could be qualified for a job like this, but if your entire family has ever been held up because your toddler refuses to put on pants so you can all go enjoy the zoo, park, or any other activity that society requires be done while wearing pants, then you know exactly what I’m saying. Sure, you’re the parent and you could just make her put on the darn pants, but then there’s crying, yelling, and other unpleasantries that I prefer to avoid before even stepping out the door. The key, of course, is making her think that you’re on her side, and that you just want to help her. You gain her trust, speak in a soothing tone, and make her believe that wearing pants is her idea. After a standoff that lasts minutes, but feels like hours, she gives up and puts on pants! A win for the good guys! Until she says she has to pee…

3. Animal Trainer
I don’t mean to brag, but my kids are pretty much house trained. They nearly always pee in, on, or around a toilet. They will sit on command, especially if I’m offering a treat, and my kids will also even lay down when I (repeatedly) give the command (200 times) each night at bedtime. I know, it’s amazing, and it’s all thanks to my stellar training skills. I’m pretty sure this qualifies me to train just about any other kind of domesticated animal.

4. Circus Ring Leader
Not only do I have the skills to train animals, I am also able to run my house like a three kid, three ringed family circus. My house guests marvel at my ability to tame the savage toddler. They gasp as simultaneously another child in the next ring (room) paints the dog’s face like a clown’s, all while the third kid walks the tightropes that are my nerves by asking 9000 times if he can play video games. The floors resemble those that you’d find under a big top too, with a variety of snacks like popcorn and peanut shells. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think from all the stomping up and down the steps that we were housing elephants too. If I really wanted to pull out all the stops, I am also able to double as the Bearded Lady if given a few weeks notice.

5. Chauffeur
This one requires little explanation to anyone with children. Whether it’s school, extracurricular activities like sports or scouts, birthday parties, doctor’s appointments, or wherever your unlicensed youth need to go, it can sometimes feel like you’re living in your car. I even keep snacks and drinks, along with books for entertainment … for myself. Personally, I think I’d make a great professional driver since I’m already always in the car, my record is clear of accidents and violations, and at this point adding a fare device to charge a fee only seems fair.

6. Harry Potter House Elf
Just like a House Elf from Harry Potter, I am immensely devoted to the family which I serve. I work tirelessly for them, but unlike a Harry Potter House Elves, who can only be freed if their masters give them clothing, I can only be freed by the gift of clean clothing. Alas, a House Mom only truly becomes free once her masters start doing their own laundry. Looks like I’ve got a while left to serve. Although this isn’t a job I’d look for in the workforce, I’m unfortunately over-qualified for the no-pay position.

7. Sewer Inspector
I think that most people, regardless of their experience level with children, go into parenting with the expectation that it’s messy at times. But until you’re actually in it, you have no idea how far that actually goes, and how you may never look at a bathroom the same way again — particularly after potty training. Once kids are potty trained, however, you’re not off the hook. I’ve retrieved items from toilets that include, but are not limited to: large wads of toilet paper, entire rolls of toilet paper, cardboard toilet paper rolls, HotWheels, Matchbox Cars, army men, plastic dinosaurs, a whole banana, tennis ball, sock, coins, underwear, Legos, and a variety of plastic undersea animals. My toilet-fishing abilities might also qualify me for a spot on The Deadliest Catch, or at the very least, a spin off, The Nastiest Catch.

8. Bug Breeder
I had never really sat down and thought about where people get mail order bugs, but if I had to guess, I bet some of them like the kind people buy for ant farms, come from families with young children. At one point my family had cut out the middle man and had our own pet ants, much to my dismay (they left crackers under the doormats to attract them). Five years later and I’m still trying to get rid of these pesky pets.

9. Pooper scooper
I’ve been down with O.P.P. (Other People’s Poop) for over eight years, and as much as it pains me to admit this, I’d be overly qualified for just about any job that involved the cleaning or disposal of poop.

10. Personal Assistant to a Diva
I’ve calmly and effectively been able to deal with insanely unreasonable people who get upset for no reason (for example when their sandwich is cut into triangles and not squares). I’m used to taking orders all day long, even ridiculous requests like “Please wipe my butt because I’m too tired!” (See again why I’d be good at #9). So working as a personal assistant to a Diva or someone like Meryl Streep’s character from The Devil Wears Prada would be no big deal. I mean, at least I’d be getting paid!

What new skills have you acquired as a parent? Would you be qualified for a new career(s) too?

Advertising Menswear: Masculinity and Fashion in the British Media Since 1945

In what was a golden age of British advertising, the notion of the ‘peacock male’ was a strong theme in fashion promotion, reflecting a new affluence and the emergence of stylish youth cultures. Based on a detailed study of rich archival material, this pioneering study examines the production, circulation and consumption of print, television and cinema publicity for men’s clothing in Britain during the second half of the twentieth century. The study explores design issues and period style in advertising, the role of market research and consumer psychology in determining target audiences, the idea of the ‘new man’ in representing fashionable masculinities, and the various ways that menswear retailers and brands dealt with sex and gender, race, class and age. From y-fronts to Austin Reed suits to Levi’s jeans, menswear advertising epitomised the themes, stereotypes, contradictions and ambiguities of masculinity in an age of great social change. This meticulously researched and detailed work of scholarship will be essential reading for students and scholars of fashion, history, sociology, advertising, media, cultural and gender studies.
