Kevin Smith Reveals 43-Lb Weight Loss After ‘Massive’ Heart Attack

Looking good! Kevin Smith updated fans on his health and revealed that he’s close to his goal of losing 50 lbs since suffering a heart attack in February.

“Today, I am down a total of 43 pounds! Only 7 more pounds until I’ve shed the 50 my doctor told me to lose following the heart attack,” the Weight Watchers ambassador, 47, captioned an Instagram pic on Wednesday, June 13, crediting magician Penn Jillette and Ray Cronise for kickstarting his weight loss, and Weight Watchers for helping him slim down. “This #wwambassador is now at the absolute thinnest I’ve been since I finished high school! And while I may look a little better, I FEEL f—king fantastic! It’ll be a few weeks, but I’m ready to lose that final 7 points! And when I hit my goal, I’ll let you know where I started.”

Smith made headlines in February after revealing that he experienced a “massive” heart attack backstage at an L.A. comedy show. He recently showed off his weight loss in May, telling his 1.2 million Instagram followers that he’s lost 32 lbs since the traumatic experience.

The filmmaker previously opened up about his weight loss journey exclusively to Us Weekly back in April.

“For me, food was not like fuel. It wasn’t, like, you eat food because it powers your body and you move on,” he said at the time. “I’m an American who grew up in the ‘70s when America figured out, if we start putting more sugar in everything, they’ll buy it. So sugar starts showing up in the bread and everything.”

Smith added that he didn’t think he was having a heart attack when it happened, given that he lost 85 lbs three years ago after cutting sugar out of his diet entirely. “I was sweaty, I thought I couldn’t catch my breath, I felt nauseated, but I didn’t think of those as heart attack symptoms,” he explained. “I couldn’t piece it together, but that’s me being incredibly stupid because my mom has two stents in her heart and my father died of a massive heart attack at 67.”

Jada Pinkett Smith: I was heartbroken when Jaden moved out

OHMYGOSSIP — Jada Pinkett Smith was “heartbroken” when her son Jaden left home at the age of 15.
The 19-year-old son of Jada and her husband Will – who also have 17-year-old daughter Willow together – left home to “live his life” four years ago, and the ‘Girls Trip’ actor has said she can still remember how “devastated” she was when he told her he wanted to move out of the family home.
Speaking to her son during an episode of her Facebook show ‘Red Table Talk’, 46-year-old Jada said: “One thing that I’ve learned is that every child need something different. At 15 years old, Jaden, and I remember this day specifically, it’s probably one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life. You got to a point where you told me straight up, you were like, ‘Mom, I have to leave here to live my life.’ I remember thinking to myself, as devastated as I was, I was like, ‘He’s right. The time is now. He’s 15. It’s time for him to leave the house.’”
Jaden was joined by his younger sister and their grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Jones on Jada’s show this week, and added that moving out helped him to “appreciate” how much his parents do for him.
He said: “It just makes you appreciate being at home, being with your parents, spending quality time with your family. You get out into the world and you just understand things.”
Jada and Will’s decision to let Jaden move out at a young age has sparked debate amongst their fans in the past, but in 2016, Will praised his son for being “fearless”.
He said: “Jaden is 100 percent fearless, he will do anything,” Will said. “So as a parent, it’s scary, it’s really terrifying — but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”

Jada Pinkett Smith and Gabrielle Union End 17-Year Feud

Gabrielle Union and Jada Pinkett Smith don’t even know how it started, but for the past 17 years, they had an ongoing, if not bitter feud. No one knew what exactly the issue was, they just “knew” they didn’t care for each other. On her new Facebook Watch series, “Red Table Talk,” Pinkett Smith decided to try to mend fences with Union and discuss the issues that can lead to hurtful rifts between women.

The two talk candidly about the kinds of issues that can become bitter between women, including the kind of mean girl behavior that Union admits she once embraced. The women, both married to famous men, also talk about navigating those relationships in the public eye.

As for what made them not cool with each other in the first place? Neither can remember.

A surprise few bars had Smith trending nationwide on Twitter, even on a day when the NFL agreed to fine teams if they have players who don’t stand for the national anthem and Shannon Brown’s younger NBA player brother, Sterling, was the focus of yet another violent response by police to the most innocuous of provocations.

Willow Smith Shocks Mom And Grandmother With Self-Harm Secret

26th Annual EMA Awards - Arrivals

Source: Jason LaVeris / Getty

Willow Smith has moved to the beat of her own drum since we were introduced to her as a young child. But what no one knew, including her mom Jada Pinkett-Smith, is that she was struggling internally with something pretty heavy.

On the latest episode of Jada’s Facebook series, Red Table Talk, Willow revealed that at just 9 years old, and at the height her “Whip My Hair” success, she was self harming by cutting her wrists.

The transparency between Queen Jada and her princess is something most young Black folks still aspire to have with their families:

We’re just glad to see that our beloved Willow is still here with us and didn’t let the pressures of fame bring her down.

Well done, sis.

Watch: Willow Smith Shocks Jada By Revealing She Used to Cut Herself After the Success of ‘Whip My Hair’ [Video]

Willow Smith says she lost her sanity during the peak of her childhood fame.

On the second episode of “Red Table Talk,” Willow, her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, and grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Jones openly discussed loss. When asked about her biggest loss, Willow disclosed something that she had never told her family about.

“I would have to say … honestly I feel like I lost my sanity at one point,” the 17-year-old singer and model said. “It was after that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing and I just had stopped doing singing lessons and I was kind of like, just in this gray area of, ‘Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is there anything, like, I can do besides this?’”

Willow released “Whip My Hair” in 2010 and it skyrocketed Willow to make — she was just 9-years-old.

She continued:

“After the tour and the promotion and all of that, they wanted me to finish my album,” Willow added. “And I was like — I’m not gonna do that. And after all of that kinda settled down and it was like a kind of lull, I was just listening to a lot of dark music, and it was just so crazy and I was just like plunged into this black hole, and I was, like, cutting myself.”

Jada and Adrienne couldn’t believe what they were hearing.

Willow said she had never told anyone except for one friend and even showed her mom an old scar on her wrist.

“I never talk about it because it was such a short, weird point in my life, but you have to pull yourself … out of it,” she said. “I honestly felt like I was experiencing so much emotional pain, but my physical circumstances weren’t reflecting that.”

We have to commend Jada for her compassionate reaction to Willow’s revelation. We can’t imagine that, as a mother, hearing your daughter say she used to cut herself is easy.

Willow Smith self-harmed after hit single

OHMYGOSSIP — Willow Smith self-harmed at the height of her fame as a child.
The 17-year-old singer – who is the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith – rose to fame at just 10 years old when she released the hit single ‘Whip My Hair’ in 2010, but she has now admitted the pressure she was under after stepping into the spotlight caused to her to start cutting her wrists.
She said: “It was after that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing and I had just stopped doing singing lessons and I was kind of just in this grey area of, ‘Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is there anything I can do besides this?’
“After the tour and the promotion and all of that, they wanted me to finish my album. And I was like, I’m not gonna do that. And after all of that kinda settled down and it was like a kind of lull, I was just listening to a lot of dark music. It was just so crazy and I was plunged into this black hole, and I was cutting myself.”
Willow made the confession whilst appearing on her mother’s ‘Red Table Talk’ series, and the ‘Girls Trip’ actress was shocked by the news.
Jada – who also has 19-year-old son Jaden with Will – said: “What? When were you cutting yourself? I didn’t see that part. Cutting yourself where?”
To which Willow responded: “On my wrist. I mean, you can’t even see it but there’s still a little something there. But like, totally lost my sanity for a moment there. I never talk about it because it was such a short weird point in my life. But you have to pull yourself out of it.”
The young star’s confession comes after she previously dubbed growing up in the spotlight as “absolutely terrible”.
She said: “I’m going to be completely and utterly honest, it’s absolutely terrible.
“Growing up and trying to figure out your life … while people feel like they have some sort of entitlement to know what’s going on, is absolutely, excruciatingly terrible – and the only way to get over it, is to go into it.
“You can’t change your face. You can’t change your parents. You can’t change any of those things.
“When you’re born into it, there are two choices that you have: I’m either going to try to go into it completely and help from the inside, or no one is going to know where I am and I’m really going to take myself completely out of the eye of society.
“There’s really no in between.”

During the first episode, we will see Pinkett Smith and Zampino discuss their blended family together for the first time. Additionally, Banfield-Norris will share her personal story about giving birth to Jada at age 17, the same age her granddaughter Willow is today.

When asked why she decided to work with Facebook on the series, Smith responded, “I started having real conversations on Facebook on my own page that were very close to a lot of the topics that we’re dealing with. It was such a beautiful comradery that I created through my own Facebook page and I feel like during this time, we’re all going through so much and life is getting more complex because times are changing so quickly and things are shifting so fast, and I felt like creating a safe space where we could come have unfiltered, honest conversations, where we can take our masks off and let go of all those personas that we created to just have real honest conversations about how we’re feeling.”

Facebook Watch is a dedicated place for shows on Facebook. It’s a platform where people can find new shows, catch up on the ones they follow, and form communities of fans. The two main verticals are Discover: A way to find new shows through your friends or the communities of people you care about (with sections such as “What Your Friends are Watching,” “Most Talked About,” or “What’s Making People Laugh”) and Watchlist: A way to catch up with shows you follow. If you follow a show, new episodes will automatically appear in your Watchlist, so you never miss them.

Kevin Smith: My heart attack was the best thing that ever happened to me

OHMYGOSSIP — Kevin Smith has dubbed his recent heart attack as the “best thing” that has ever happened to his health.
The 47-year-old director – who previously lost 90lbs in seven years – required emergency surgery when he was hospitalised last month after suffering a “widow-maker” heart attack.
After coming out the other side of his health scare, he is now determined to lose weight and become more healthy, and so now believes the ordeal was a good thing in terms of motivating him to get fit.
On Twitter on Friday (30.03.18), Kevin wrote: “Down 26 pounds today! Started March 8th and now 4 weeks later, I’ve lost a small child worth of weight! Doc told me to lose 50 pounds and I’m now over halfway to that goal! Ironically, this heart attack was the best thing that ever happened to my health! (sic)”
Kevin’s weight loss is largely thanks to Penn Jillette’s book ‘Presto!’, which chronicled his 100lb weight loss, and advice from dietary nutrition researcher Ray Cronise.
The ‘Clerks’ helmer tweeted recently: “I’m officially down 20 pounds as of this morning! 20 pounds in 13 days & my blood pressure is amazing. How did this happen? @pennjillette & his book “Presto” turned me on to @RayCronise and his program at http://justsides.com My Doc said lose 50 pounds. 20 down, 30 more to go! (sic)”
The ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ helmer was forced to cancel a show in California because of his terrifying ordeal, and later explained on Twitter that if he hadn’t rushed himself to the hospital, he wouldn’t have survived.
He wrote at the time: “After the first show this evening, I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka “the Widow-Maker”).
“If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground! (sic)”

J.R. Smith Says This Dog Is Responsible For His Season’s Best Game

Although J.R. Smith, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ shirtless wonder, has had a rocky season so far, he went off during a game versus the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night, having one of the best games he’s had all season — something he attributes to a dog named Remi.

Smith, who visited the University of North Carolina’s baseball team ahead of the Cavs-Hornets game, also had the good fortune to hang out with Remi, a service dog for the team. According to ESPN, the meeting was facilitated by Head athletic trainer for the Cavs, Steve Spiro.

“We had a great opportunity today to do something for our players outside of the normal routine on a back-to-back,” Spiro said. “We looked for it to be a potentially very positive impact in a casual setting where the guys could enjoy being around Remington, who is an extremely loving and talented service/therapy dog.”

Following his time with Remi, Smith shot 8-for-9 from the field, scoring 19 points for the Cavs; the night also resulted in five boards, three assists, and three steals for the NBA player, something that Smith emphatically credits his newfound canine friend for.

My new best friend #Remington from #UNC

A post shared by JR Smith (@teamswish) on

“For me, it was exactly what I needed,” Smith said. “Took my mind off the game so it could make me feel better.”

The positive effect that Remi had on Smith’s emotions that night was something that the Cavs player did not take for granted.

“It was right on time, especially for me,” Smith said. “I’m an emotional person. I live in my head. I don’t really express a lot of things. But let’s just say it was right on time.”

Mental health has been a big focus for the Cavaliers this season, with Smith’s teammate Kevin Love even writing an essay for The Player’s Tribune about his experience with anxiety.

Michael Smith Out As Anchor Of ESPN’s ‘Sportscenter’

The Eighth Annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival Kick-off 'When the Garden' at BMCC Theater

Source: PNP/WENN.com / WENN

The pairing of Michael Smith and Jemele Hill at ESPN’s Sportscenter was a history-making move marking the first time the popular sports program featured an all-Black anchor team. With Hill bolting for The Undefeated, it all seemed apparent that Smith would also follow suit and he delivered his last anchoring broadcast on Friday (Mar. 9).

Sports Illustrated reports:

Smith leaving the 6 p.m. SC6 edition of SportsCenter follows his former SportsCenter co-anchor Jemele Hill ’s decision to depart the franchise to join the staff of The Undefeated, the ESPN microsite that fuses sports, race and culture, as well as other additional assignments. Both Hill and Smith have multiple years left on their ESPN contracts so look for Smith to craft a new role at ESPN over the next couple of months.

As this column wrote in October when it predicted Hill’s tenure as the co-host of the 6 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter would end, Smith leaving SportsCenter is not a surprise. The SportsCenter that Hill and Smith envisioned, what made their chemistry honest and unique on the ESPN2 show His and Hers and their podcasts together, had slowly been chopped away by a desire from management to change that show to that of a traditional SportsCenter. In addition, SportsCenter’s upper management shifted last September with longtime ESPN exec Norby Williamson becoming the lead executive on all SportsCenter content as part of a management shakeup in ESPN’s content group.

Although it isn’t known where Smith will end up next, chances are The Undefeated will be his next home.

Sam Smith surprises crowd with Latch performance at Camden Roundhouse

OHMYGOSSIP — Sam Smith made a surprise appearance at the Annie Mac Presents: AMP Sounds Closing Party on Saturday night (24.02.18) to perform ‘Latch’ with Disclosure.
The 25-year-old pop star was one of two special guests at the charity bash, which was hosted by the BBC Radio 1 DJ, at north London’s Camden Roundhouse.
Mouths dropped as the ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ hitmaker casually took to the stage to sing the dance track, which he recorded with the electronic duo – comprised of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence – in 2013, a year before Sam became an international star with his debut record ‘In The Lonely Hour’.
Prior to Sam’s appearance, the likes of Stefflon Don, Mabel, Raye and Wretch 32 all performed and helped raise £30,000 for the Roundhouse charity – which supports young budding artists in achieving their dreams.
Another special guest was Years and Years frontman Olly Alexander, who did renditions of his band’s hit songs ‘King’ and ‘Desire’ with two backing singers.
However, it wasn’t as much of a surprise as Sam turning up, as the singer took to Twitter to tease his appearance at the sold out event hours before.
The evening also saw some of the best rising talent in the grime world, including ‘Addison Lee’ hitmaker Not3s – who also performed ‘My Lover’ and ‘Fine Line’ with Mabel – and ‘Know My Ting’ star Ghetts entertain.
The night was not without drama, as within minutes of Ghetts coming on stage, the building was evacuated with gig-goers not being told what was happening.
However, Annie took to twitter to announce the party was back on and explained it was simply a smoke alarm that had been set off – and the line-up resumed.
Joking that Ghetts’ was “too good” and shut the place down, Anne wrote: “The party is back on after a slight blip – basically @THEREALGHETTS was too good and we had to evacuate the building @Amp (sic)”

Smith, who died Wednesday aged 60, was part of a generation of working class British artists who weren’t afraid to be contrary and independent, a singer and songwriter whose mastery of repetition and conjuring of atmosphere could seem almost eerie.

Most obviously and particularly on a mesmerizing run of albums at the beginning of the 1980s -Grotesque (1980), Slates (1981), Hex Enduction Hour (1982), Perverted by Language (1983)—The Fall produced lasting works of what the late theorist Mark Fisher called “pulp modernism”, their singer and songwriter blending the abstract and avant-garde with the direct and confrontational. He was a true artist, and by consciously self-sabotaging, he maintained a standard that was hard for anyone else to come close to.

Mark E. Smith Dead: The Fall Lead Singer Dies at 60

The lead singer of the English post-punk band The Fall, Mark E. Smith, died on Wednesday, January 24. He was 60.

The Fall’s manager Pam Van Damned released a statement to announce Smith’s passing via Cherry Red Records.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith. He passed this morning at home,” the statement reads. “A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”

The late singer formed The Fall in 1976 with original members Martin Bramah, Una Baines and Tony Friel. Smith was the only founding member to stick with the group and released more than 30 albums with the band.

Smith’s former bandmate Marc Riley, who was in The Fall from 1978 to 1983, spoke about his passing on BBC 6 Music.

“[Smith] taught me a lot about life and he taught me a lot about music,” Riley said on Wednesday. The news broke when he was on air. “Aged 16 he really did teach me so much … The Fall were my favorite band when I joined and they were still my favorite band when I got kicked out.”

Smith’s ex-wife Brix Smith Start took to Twitter to react to the news. ”I’m taking the news in right now. I will put a statement out tomorrow. I hope you will all understand. Thank you for your lovely messages, they mean a lot. I love you, Brix,” she captioned a photo of with Smith.

Smith was also married to Saffron Prior from 1991 to 1995. He is survived by wife Elenor Smith. The pair tied the knot in 2001.

Netflix Confirms ‘Bright’ Sequel With Will Smith and Joel Edgerton Returning

Netflix Confirms 'Bright' Sequel With Will Smith and Joel Edgerton Returning

Netflix took a big gamble with Bright, an original action fantasy film that cost them $ 90 million, their largest purchase ever. And it paid off, because the company has now confirmed that the title is their biggest yet.

Since debuting on the service on December 22, Bright has become the number one Netflix Original in all 190 countries where it's available, with it being even more popular internationally than in the US. In its first week alone, the movie took the crown as the…

MOVIE APP UPDATE:

‘Bright’ Sequel Is Confirmed with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton

The Will Smith and Joel Edgerton duo will return in a sequel to Bright, Netflix has confirmed today. David Ayer will again be directing, and with two returning producers, much of the core team remains unchanged — with one exception.

Screenwriter Max Landis has been left out of the team, and David Ayer will be writing the script. Ayer recently wrote Suicide Squad, which had its own plethora of problems. But he also wrote Training Day, which is quite in line with what Bright aims to be in tone.

The urban fantasy slash buddy cop film attempted to use an LA setting full of orcs and magic to explore racism and stereotyping. But much of it was very on the nose, due in no small part to the writing.

We had previously heard that Netflix already wanted a Bright sequel, and I didn’t exactly doubt it — but it did come at a weird time. We had just seen a surge in confidence after Disney pulled a similar stunt.

Rian Johnson had been given a whole trilogy of Star Wars films, the news of which broke right before The Last Jedi opened in cinemas, leading everyone to believe the latest Star Wars movie was going to be so amazing it was the future of the franchise. The thought that Bright was getting in on that sweet, speculative confidence — while perhaps not 100% sure about the sequel — had crossed my mind.

But that’s all academic now, because despite review scores, Bright went on to be successful. It was the highest viewed Netflix film within the first week of its release and is the #1 movie on the streaming service globally. 11 million US viewers watched the movie within the first three days, not including those watching on computers or mobile devices.

With the amount of promotion pumped into it, it would want to be that successful. Better writing will be a key factor in whether or not the sequel can be known for quality as well as decent numbers.

The Ms. Q&A: Barbara Smith on Finding Hope in the Struggle

The Combahee River Collective’s Black Feminist Statement turns 40 this year, along with the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA). In honor of the anniversaries, the intersections of feminist academia and the movement for black lives is the central focus of this year’s NWSA Conference. Barbara Smith, co-founder of the Collective, talked to Ms. about its legacy in the feminist movement, intersectionality and identity politics and finding hope in the struggle.

Wikimedia / Creative Commons

What is your hope for the legacy of the Combahee River Collective?

Smith: We were about doing organizing, black feminist organizing. We did more than write a statement. We were committed to both theory and practice. That’s what makes the Combahee River Collective unique. It was very clear that we weren’t just talking about black feminist identity. We were about doing the work, and that still needs to be the case.

Could you describe the work you were getting done?

We were organizing around issues affecting black women at a time when no one thought those issues existed. No one was talking about violence against women or reproductive rights as they impacted women of color.  The white women’s movement defined those issues through a white lens, and black nationalism and black power at that time were not paying attention to race and white supremacy on black women.  Very few were talking about homophobia.  Our statement looked at all of those issues with an incisive anti-capitalist perspective. We were looking at all the issues affecting black women.  We had not identified all issues at the writing of the statement, but we laid out a template that would allow people to identify those issues in the future and struggle around them.

Were you also involved in NWSA at the time?

I was at the first NWSA conference following the founding of the association. It was the same year I presented “Racism and Women’s Studies.”

What would you say is the significance of NWSA celebrating the anniversary of the CRC Black Feminist Statement alongside its own anniversary?

It’s quite amazing because the politics of the Combahee River Collective were radical leftist politics. The fact that now, this many years later, that the NWSA would see value in our legacy and those interventions, I’m amazed to this day. Personally, I had two focuses at that time: the building of black women’s studies and the building of black feminism.  I did not necessarily see those two things as residing comfortably with each other, particularly on the academic women’s studies side. So the fact that the work I was involved in simultaneously would be recognized as being of value by the leading women’s studies organization in the nation, that was quite profound. I think it shows that there’s been growth and development.

Have we learned the lessons from Combahee River Collective’s black feminist statement? There has been a great deal of lip service to “intersectionality,” and although we can recognize someone like Kimberlé Crenshaw coining the term intersectionality, I think most of us recognize the work Combahee River Collective did in laying the foundation for that analysis.

I think our focus on the simultaneity of oppression and identity politics, the concepts we brought forth in our statement work hand in hand with intersectionality. Historically the statement predates the work Crenshaw did on critical race theory and the development of the term. But they are absolutely in concert with each other and they are focused on similar political perspectives on how women of color experience oppression and how we fight it.

Do you think we have grasped the complexity around intersectionality and multiple oppressions?

Well, you can’t work on one vector of oppression and think you’re going to solve whatever problem you’re addressing. You have to be able to understand how systems of oppression connect with each other. So, let’s say you’re working on Food Insecurity and the undermining of safe and healthy food supplies, even if that’s where you are focusing your struggle, you still need an understanding of how class, race, gender, sexuality, how they have impact on the work you’re doing and you should also just care about what other people are worried about at the same time.

Here in Albany, we have a neighborhood that has serious environmental injustice with pollution coming from freight trains and diesel trucks. If we only focus on food apartheid–a better term than food deserts or food insecurity–and don’t take into account the other environmental injustices happening, even in that regard, we’ve missed the boat. The same neighborhood also experiences gun violence and high unemployment, so we cannot address these issues by looking simplistically at just one vector of oppression. But there has been so many distortion and lies about what we meant by identity politics.

In Mark Lilla’s recent book, The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics, he cites from the Combahee River Collective statement, and it’s at the beginning of a chapter titled “Pseudo Politics.” It’s so incredibly insulting! Here’s someone who probably didn’t lift a finger to effect actual political change, but sits in his comfort and privilege to tell others what to think of these political issues. He’s gotten major play for saying awful things about those of us who think it is important to take into account the various standpoints from those of us who are not white, male, cisgender, heterosexual and wealthy. His arguments only work for those who identify that way, but they don’t think they’re practicing identity politics when in fact they are.

What is the biggest misunderstanding about identity politics?

When we used the term identity politics, we did not mean that we would not work with anyone who was different from ourselves and that we did not believe strongly and fervently in coalition politics. We did. The reason that we used the term identity politics is because we were asserting in the mid to late 1970’s that black women had a right to create our own political agendas based upon our actual political identities. No one ever brings this up.

When anyone talks about the failures of and the wrongheadedness of identity politics, they never examine or acknowledge what we meant for ourselves. And that I find infuriating. Because their understandings are so superficial. They want to use our own words to beat us up with and anyone else who thinks it makes a difference if you’re a trans woman of color who’s homeless and whose experiences will color the ways that she sees the world and what her needs are when it comes to change and social justice. Instead they take the most simplistic meaning and don’t place it in a proper historical context.

For black women in the 1970’s to say that the most meaningful politics come out of our identities, that was a revolutionary statement. No one else was saying that. Of course today, even Beyoncé can be a black feminist, but how did she get to be one?

How do you think multiple systems of oppression and identity politics play out in our current political climate?

The majority of people living in the United States are under attack by the present administration –  Muslims, women, LGBT people, black people, immigrants, poor people. One of the things I have said in the past and what this period embodies is that the right wing has an intersectional perspective about who they hold in contempt and who they wish to obliterate. The counter to that is a multi-issued coalition politics to fight and challenge all these attacks that are coming from our government. I think these politics are more vital and more useful than ever, and given the level of attention to these politics, we have to find other ways to struggle and we all have to be in this together and have consciousness about what our sisters and brothers are experiencing.

How do you see these issues impacting on the current #MeToo hashtag movement around sexual assault and harassment?

It’s really good whenever people who are being abused and brutalized speak out. I know there have been criticisms that the reason people are listening to this is because the victims are famous Hollywood women with lots of privilege. I don’t know if that’s a fair assessment of it, but I think it’s important for women and other people to speak out when they are under attack. I think the limitations is about who is believed. Women of color have been saying this for years and have been enduring this for years, but no one would listen because we’re not white and rich and famous. I think that critique is valid. On the other hand, there is a nationwide furor and set of discussions going on about what’s it like to be a woman and subject to the reality of unwanted sexual advances or the threat of them. That’s a good conversation to have.

How do we remain hopeful despite being under attack?

There’s always hope in struggle. You can’t struggle without hope. As long as people are struggling and organizing, there’s hope. In some instances, the scales are falling away from people’s eyes and some are beginning to see how undemocratic, how abusive and how wrong the hatemongering is that we’re experiencing during this period. People want a new way. I’m very excited about the poor people’s campaign that William Barber is co-leading and I’m involved in New York state for a similar campaign. Because I’m involved with struggle, I’m always hopeful.

Tyrese Says Will And Jada Smith Gave Him $5M And Asked Him To Stay Offline

Hold up! We just realized it’s been over 24 hours and we haven’t mentioned anything about Tyrese Gibson.

Well, now that his child abuse court case and of course that video meltdown is behind him, he’s back to his daily shenanigans again and we have once again ask if he’s wrapped tight? Or on the other hand, is he wrapped TOO tight?

Here’s the deal. In the wake of crying broke and literally crying, he headed to the Gram to let y’all know he got a very important and timely call from Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

“Sometimes you just need 1 phone call,” wrote Tyrese. “Just know that God is the greatest…… They don’t want any love….. They told me to go easy…. just know that it’s just good to know there’s still some really nice sincere people out here…… Jada-Pinkett-Smith and my hero WILL SMITH.”

Instagram Photo

After that post, he made another, claiming Will & Jada gave him $ 5 million to help with his legal fees and requested that he stay off social media.

“My wife kept the news away from me cause I’ve been on with lawyers all day but our family and our sister Jada-Pinkett Smith and my brother Will Smith just sent us 5 million to help keep us afloat,” said Tyrese. “You’ve guys asked me to get off and stay off the Internet now that my daughter’s legal fees will be paid.”

Being the knucklehead that he is, Tyrese couldn’t help himself and did what Will and Jad asked him NOT to do.

Think about it. If someone gave or loaned you $ 5 million and asked you to stay off social media, what would you do?

Stephen A. Smith on Kaepernick: ‘Stay the Hell Away From Me’

Colin Kaepernick has remained a news fixture for well over a year now and was even brought up during a riveting panel at Black Enterprise’s inaugural Black Men XCEL Summit.

(L-R: Keith Clinkscales, Stephen A. Smith, and Rod Strickland. Image: File)

The panel, “Black Men in Sports: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality,” featured iconic figures in the sports industry including ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and retired NBA player Rod Strickland. The panel moderator was Keith Clinkscales, founder and CEO of The Shadow League.

During the session, Clinkscales remarked that the discussion that’s “going on all over the place” is what is happening with Kaepernick.

Strickland weighed in. “My whole outlook on it when I look at it—it’s just kind of strange because we had somebody who made a stance and he made a stance because he felt there was racial profiling, blacks were being beat up by cops and there was injustice…,” he said.

Smith, known for his fiery and often controversial commentary was much more impassioned with his opinion on Kaepernick.

“My only issue with Colin Kaepernick is when he announced to the world that he’s not one to vote. If you are black and you don’t believe that it’s important to vote, just do me a favor and stay the hell away from me….don’t talk to me, don’t look at me, I’m not interested in hearing that level of ignorance,” Smith said.

“Because it is ignorant. Because outside of money, the No. 1 instrument of change in our nation is the power to vote. And if you don’t exercise it, you’ve disrespected yourself, you’ve disrespected our ancestors, and you’ve disrespected our history and I have no respect for you.”

Kaepernick became a center news item again just this week after the arrest of Seattle Seahawk Michael Bennett. Bennett shared on social media that he was roughed up and thrown to the ground by Las Vegas police officers after an incident in a casino and was also threatened with a gun.

Bennett has shown solidarity with Kaepernick in his protest against police brutality and racism. In June, Bennett spoke out about Kaepernick remaining undrafted by any NFL team.

“Of course I think Kaepernick’s being blackballed,” he told Power 105.1 FM’s The Breakfast Club, reports CBS Sports.

Smith beats 2016 champ Levy in playoff to win European Open

HAMBURG, Germany — Jordan Smith beat defending champion Alexander Levy in a two-hole playoff to win the European Open on Sunday.

Levy led by a single shot at the 18th hole, but the French player had to tap in a tricky par putt to force the playoff after playing partner Smith, the overnight leader, holed his 10-foot birdie putt to go 13-under.

Smith’s close-range birdie in the playoff secured his first European Tour title in his 25th event.

Smith says, “I’ve loved it. It’s been nerve-wracking at times but I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Jada Pinkett Smith Was Moving Weight Back In The Day?

Jada Pinkett Smith‘s name has been ringing lately after she blasted the recent 2Pac biopic All Eyez On Me over what she says were some inaccuracies regarding their relationship. I haven’t really told the whole story,” said Pinkett Smith. “One of the things that is really interesting, and I never said this before, is when I first met Pac, when we first met, I was a drug dealer.”

Pinket Smith didn’t elaborate much on her drug dealing past, telling the show’s hosts that she plans to reveal more in an upcoming biography. But she did say that as she exited the thug life, the late rapper and actor was diving headfirst into it.

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith Celebrate Son Jaden Smith’s 19th Birthday with Epic Throwbacks

Jaden Smith turned 19 on Saturday, and his family celebrated with a series of painfully cute photos from his childhood.

Mom Jada Pinkett Smith kicked things off with a throwback photo of Jaden in what looks like a sunflower costume, praising her son’s style and calling Jaden her “treasure.”

“Jaden, you’ve always had style,” the 45-year-old Girls Trip star wrote in the post’s caption. “Happy 19th my treasure. I love you.”

Dad Will Smith was right behind her. Last year he wrote a sweet Facebook post for his son, saying that he’s “still tryna figure out what the hell  doing.” (An old picture of the 47-year-old actor scratching his head while holding baby Jaden accompanied the message).

This year the proud papa took to Facebook again, also posting a very sweet photo of baby Jaden sitting on Smith’s lap. This caption cleverly read, “Happy Birthday, Jaden.19 today! I’ma have to sit on your lap from here on out.”

Sister Willow, 16, threw her brother some love too.

“Happy Birthday Big-Bro,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a childhood photo of Jaden.

Caitlyn Jenner Praises Transgender Survivor Contestant Zeke Smith: ‘You Made Us Proud’

Caitlyn Jenner is praising the Survivor contestant who was outed as transgender by a fellow competitor.

On Wednesday night’s shocking episode of Survivor: Game Changers, Jeff Varner outed Zeke Smith during a tribal council in an attempt to paint the Brooklyn-based asset manager as “deceitful” and therefore worthy of being voted out.

A day following the emotional episode, Jenner, who revealed in a 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer in 2015 that she identifies as a woman and would be transitioning from male to female, vocalized her support of 29-year-old Smith.

“@zekerchief Being trans in the public eye is no joke, but you did good buddy,” Jenner, 67, tweeted. “You made us proud.”

Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE for the current issue, Smith said, “It’s tough with Varner.”

“I don’t think he hates trans people. I just think he has a lot of misconceptions about trans people,” said Smith. “I think if he wants to be an ally to trans people, he has a long way to go.”

But Smith is extremely pleased that his tribemates quickly admonished Varner for his actions.

“Trans people are a highly vulnerable population. We make easy targets. We’re attacked a lot and I expected a lot more from Varner,” said Smith. “But I think it’s so great that you see his hateful tactics rebuffed with such amazing love and from such a diverse group that responds to him.”

After being ousted by his tribe on Wednesday’s episode, Varner approached Smith and pulled him in for a hug. After viewing the footage, Smith admitted it was a hard moment to watch: “It was hard to see me hug him that night and tell him that it was going to be okay. But it was important for me to show that he had not cowed me; that whatever shots he meant to take at me, he missed; that I was the stronger man and he was the one weeping.”

Survivor: Game Changers airs Wednesdays (8 p.m. ET) on CBS.

Patti Smith, Philip Glass, Iggy Pop and More Bring Peace, Music and Resistance to Tibet House’s Carnegie Hall Benefit

“Remain happy, remain loving—but resist.” Those were Professor Robert Thurman’s opening remarks at the 30th annual Tibet House Benefit Concert held Thursday night at New York City’s iconic Carnegie Hall. But perhaps “opening shot” might be a more appropriate term. Despite the glitzy setting, the concert was a night of peaceful rebellion—assisted by an unparalleled lineup of diverse musicians ranging from punk poet laureate Patti Smith, soul shouters Alabama Shakes, electro pioneers New Order, dreamy acoustic troubadours Ben Harper and Sufjan Stevens, and the raw power of Iggy Pop.

Presiding over the evening was composer supremo Philip Glass, whose role as curator and artistic director was dwarfed by his status as birthday boy. Having turned 80 years old in January, the evening doubled as a celebration of his life, as well as three decades of Tibet House’s service. The organization was founded in 1987 by Thurman, Glass, and actor Richard Gere at the behest of the 14th Dalai Lama, as a way to keep Tibetan traditions alive in the United States.

Nominally the night raised awareness of Tibetan resistance against the 60-plus-year Chinese occupation, but this night there was another “T” word in the air. Several artists used their sets to speak out against domestic political affairs, beginning with Laurie Anderson. The performance artist delivered a new spoken word piece, “Don’t Go Back to Sea,” featuring pointed lyrics like “you don’t look like a president to me,” and lines borrowed from late husband Lou Reed’s “Dirty Blvd.” Though recorded in 1989, lines like “Give me your hungry, your tired, your poor/I’ll piss on ’em/That’s what the Statue of Bigotry says,” take on a potent meaning as the controversy over a proposed “travel ban” plays out in the legal system.

Stevens and Cat Martino made their own statement by singing a beautifully morphed version of “The Star-Spangled Banner”—a mainstay of Stevens’ live performances for over a decade—and dedicating it to the commander-in-chief.

But it wasn’t all political demonstrations. Alabama Shakes played a stunning three-song set, including collaborations with Glass and the Scorchio Quartet on “Over My Head,” and “Sound & Color.” Iggy Pop’s collaboration with New Order, including (at Pop’s request) a rare rendition of the Joy Division classic “She’s Lost Control,” was a high octane highlight, and Ben Harper’s duet with 15-year-old daughter Harris on “Everything” tugged at the heart strings.

FROM COINAGE: The Real Cost of Going to Coachella

Patti Smith and her band brought the night to a close with trademark fire and fervor, starting with a searing cover of Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”—its lyrical potency undiminished more than half a century after its composition. From there she dipped into her own back catalogue, first with “Citizen Ship,” a track from 1979’s Waves, and finally with a show-stopping version of her anthemic “People Have the Power” which got the 3,000-strong crowd on their feet and had the evening’s artists crowding the stage to sing along. Her parting shot? “Don’t forget that joy is one of our greatest f—ing weapons!”

Occurring days after the White House unveiled a preliminary 2018 budget that would effectively gut federally funded arts organizations, the concert served as a beacon of hope as the creative community faces a scary future. But Glass, the guiding hand behind the evening’s festivities, is optimistic. Being 80 brings with it the benefit of experience, after all.

“In the ’60s, we were really in a bad way,” Glass told PEOPLE at the post-concert gala at Gotham Hall. “At that time, the artists made huge contributions. That was the time we had Allen Ginsberg and Ornette Colman. When things are bad, the arts are flourishing! And that’s why when you go to a concert you feel that positive, because people respond to that. Looking at this two-party system where people don’t talk to each other, negotiations don’t really happen, no one talks about social justice anymore. It’s left up to the artists. That’s what you saw tonight. Patti particularly picked pieced that had social impact, and I think it’s the arts that keep us going!”

Funny Or Die Has A Take On The Tom Petty, Sam Smith Controversy

Funny or Die won’t let Tom Petty take good news without a jab.

Last week, the world learned that Sam Smith would pay Petty royalties from his song “Stay with Me” due to its musical similarities to Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.” The folks over at Funny Or Die found the development quite interesting, considering the numerous instances of musical similarities among pop songs. Cue the above video, which draws attention to the resemblance some of Petty’s songs bear to earlier ones from other artists.

Petty still comes out on top in this whole scenario — lots of money trumps not being made fun of on the Internet — but it does raise some interesting points about musical ownership.

Masters Of Love – Emily Esfahani Smith – The Atlantic

Every day in June, the most popular wedding month of the year, about 13,000 American couples will say “I do,” committing to a lifelong relationship that will be full of friendship, joy, and love that will carry them forward to their final days on this earth.

Except, of course, it doesn’t work out that way for most people. The majority of marriages fail, either ending in divorce and separation or devolving into bitterness and dysfunction. Of all the people who get married, only three in ten remain in healthy, happy marriages, as psychologist Ty Tashiro points out in his book The Science of Happily Ever After, which was published earlier this year.

Jaden Smith Wore A White Batman Costume To Kimye’s Wedding

Yes, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding was an over-the-top, star-studded circus, but Jaden Smith was strangest sighting at the affair.

Seriously, the kid wore a white Batman costume — at least to the reception, anyway. If you think we are joking, look no further “Girls Gone Wild” founder Joe Francis’ Instagram photo, in which he and Kourtney Kardashian were photobombed by “white Batman.”

Francis and Kourtney weren’t the only people he photobombed, either. Family friend and hairstylist, Clyde Haygood, also posted an a photo of the 15-year-old swooping in on his snapshot with Kris Jenner, which he captioned, “And then…. This cRaZYyyy #albino #bat flew in… “

We’re thinking maybe Smith’s rumored girlfriend Kylie Jenner has a thing for superheroes, because a source told E! News the two teenagers were actually seen “making out” following the wedding ceremony at Forte di Belvedere on May 24. And let’s just say, it’s not the first time we’ve seen Smith in a superhero costume while he’s been hanging out with Jenner.

Because Steven Moffat and his team have been successfully secretive about the events around tonight’s festivities, we only know some bare bones.
