Why is Martin Hughes-Games not on Springwatch 2018 and who are the special guests? From Steve Backshall to Lucy Cooke

Springwatch is back on BBC2 but without one of its familiar faces.

Martin Hugh-Games will not be returning as a presenter after 12 years of service – here’s what we know about it so far and who may be guest presenting in his place.

After 12 years the veteran presenter is leaving the show
Handout

Why is Martin Hugh-Games not returning to Springwatch?

In 2016 he actually announced that he was being axed by the BBC in order for diversity targets to be met.

However after a flurry of support from viewers, his role was changed rather than terminated.

Show bosses gave him less time in the studio and more in the field.

But in February he tweeted again confirming he was leaving the show for definite.

He said in a subsequent Radio Times interview: “I had reasons for deciding to leave Springwatch, but these are private and I have no wish to upset anyone by going on about them. I’m going to miss Chris and Michaela terribly. Springwatch, as a totally non-scripted, live show is exceptionally difficult to present but Chris and Michaela make it look almost effortless and great fun – it’s an amazing skill.”

Who is guest presenting?

Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan Gillian Burke are the three main presenters but there is a rotating cast of guest presenters too.

Judge Tosses Manafort Civil Suit Challenging Special Counsel

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge in Washington on Friday threw out a civil lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman that sought to challenge the authority of the special counsel in the Russia investigation.

The decision was a blow to Paul Manafort‘s defense against numerous charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller and a rejection of his use of a civil case to attack his criminal prosecution. It was the first of Manafort’s challenges to Mueller’s authority.

He has made similar arguments in moving to dismiss the two criminal cases against him.

In her 24-page ruling , U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who also presides in one of Manafort’s criminal cases, rejected his request for an order protecting him from future prosecutions by Mueller’s team.

“A civil case is not the appropriate vehicle for taking issue with what a prosecutor has done in the past or where he might be headed in the future,” Jackson wrote, saying that it was well-established law that a court shouldn’t use its powers in a civil case to interfere in a criminal investigation when a defendant has the ability to challenge the prosecution in a criminal case.

Jackson stressed, though, that her order in the civil case does not address the pending motions in Manafort’s criminal cases and “should not be read as expressing any opinion” about the merits of those arguments. Jackson said she will issue a separate order in the criminal case in which she presides at a later date.

Joshua Stueve, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment. A spokesman for Manafort didn’t immediately have comment on the ruling.

Manafort faces two criminal cases that include charges of money laundering conspiracy, bank fraud, tax evasion and acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Ukrainian interests. None of the charges relate to allegations of Russian election interference and possible coordination with Trump associates, the main thrust of Mueller’s public appointment order.

Manafort’s attorneys, Kevin Downing and Thomas Zehnle, had pointed to that fact in arguing that Mueller had exceeded his authority by bringing charges unrelated to Russia or the Trump campaign. Initially, Manafort had asking Jackson to throw out all charges against him and nullify Mueller’s appointment order in total.

But in an April 4 hearing, Downing told Jackson that he was dropping the bulk of the civil challenge, asking her just to nullify a paragraph in Mueller’s appointment order that he believed was overly broad. They also asked Jackson to issue an order protecting Manafort from future prosecutions by Mueller.

The Justice Department had moved for dismissal of the lawsuit, largely on grounds that allowing a judge in a civil case to dictate the scope of a criminal investigation would be a violation of separation of powers. Daniel Schwei of the Justice Department’s civil division argued that previous precedent should guide the judge to throw out the suit.

“This is a collateral civil challenge attacking a criminal prosecution,” Schwei told the judge.

Manafort’s civil lawsuit did not address a recently released memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that appears to undercut his argument that Mueller didn’t have the authority to prosecute him.

The August 2017 memo shows Rosenstein specifically authorized the special counsel to investigate Manafort for his political consulting work in Ukraine on behalf of the government and former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. The memo, which had not been previously released publicly, also revealed that Mueller was empowered to investigate whether Manafort “committed a crime or crimes by colluding with Russian government officials” to interfere with the presidential election.

The portions of the memo were made public in a court filing that responded to Manafort’s motion to dismiss his criminal case in Washington, which is also before Jackson. That motion and a similar one in Manafort’s criminal case in Virginia are still pending.

Kaiser Permanente Provides Total Health Care to Special Olympics Southern California as the ‘Official Health Partner’

PASADENA, Calif. — Kaiser Permanente Southern California has signed a three-year agreement as the “Official Health Partner” for Special Olympics Southern California. In yesterday’s contract signing, the two entities acknowledged their shared vision and commitment to diversity, inclusion and total health for individuals and communities.

“There are many reasons why this partnership works,” said Julie Miller-Phipps, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Inc., for the Southern California Region. “Special Olympics Southern California has led the charge in transforming lives through the joy of sport for people with intellectual disabilities and in doing so they have reached, touched and taught the public about the importance of inclusion and acceptance of each other’s differences. We believe that by actively supporting and participating in SOSC events, we can strengthen and spread further a message of understanding and respect for children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout the communities we serve.”

“Improving the health and wellness of individuals with intellectual disabilities is one of Special Olympics Southern California’s goals,” said Bill Shumard, president and CEO of Special Olympics Southern California. “With Kaiser Permanente as a teammate, we’ll be able to transform even more lives through health education, health promotion and health care. We look forward to partnering with them over the years.”

As part of the commitment, Kaiser Permanente has appointed Southern California Permanente Medical Group Family and Sports Medicine physician, Aaron Rubin, MD, to serve as the official chief medical officer for SOSC.

“Providing exceptional care to the communities we serve is part of what drives our physicians at Kaiser Permanente. The inspiring Special Olympics athletes will receive the highest standard of medical expertise and sideline care from our Permanente physicians, led by Dr. Aaron Rubin. SOSC can rest assured that their athletes are in good hands with him at the helm,” said Edward M. Ellison, MD, executive medical director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

Dr. Rubin, who previously served as medical director of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles, will oversee approximately 40 Southern California Permanente Medical Group physicians and medical support staff at the games, providing sideline medical care and ongoing medical care to the athletes and SOSC over the next three years. The medical team will also assist SOSC’s Healthy Athletes, a program that provides free health screening to all SOSC athletes.

Kaiser Permanente staff and physicians will volunteer at SOSC competitions throughout the year, including the 2018 Summer Games on June 9 and 10 at California State University, Long Beach. More than 1,100 athletes from across Southern California will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals and ribbons. The Games feature four sports: track and field, basketball, bocce and swimming, and will introduce a new sport, flag football. The Games are free and open to the public. Learn more at www.sosc.org/summergames.

Fresh off her appearances on Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show, Cardi B is ready to set the world on fire once again. The pregnant “Bodak Yellow” rapper, 25, is joining MTV for a one-hour special “Total Request Live Party With Cardi” on Tuesday, April 10.

Hosted by Sway Calloway and Cardi’s sister, The Challenge’s Hennessy Carolina, the Bronx native will appear live in-studio to dish on her new album Invasion of Privacy, celebrate her recent successes and count down some of her biggest moments to date.

The “Finesse” rapper, whose latest efforts have already been certified gold, announced after much speculation that she was expecting her first bundle of joy with fiancé Offset while appearing on NBC’s SNL on Saturday, April 7. Just hours after the reveal, the star, whose real name is Belcalis Almanza, addressed those who doubted her via Twitter.

“I started winning when the whole world was doubting on me ! think imma lose with my little baby counting on me ?” she wrote at the time.

The Grammy-nominated artist, who is scheduled to perform at Coachella this weekend, did not hold back when talking about her love’s parenting abilities during an interview with Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning on Monday, April 9.

“Everybody want to joke around, ‘Oh, you’re the fourth baby mom. The real reason behind Sessions’ special counsel decision

Newspaper and television headlines are blunt instruments that leave little room for nuance. Throw in the anti-Trump bias and it’s no surprise that nearly all media followed the same simplistic thinking to describe Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision on whether to appoint a second special counsel. His answer was “no,” the chorus declared, case closed….

Taking care of kids when you’re sick is a special kind of hell

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

“Mom! Can you move the fridge? I lost a ball behind there!”

It’s not actually that hard to move our fridge. It rolls pretty easily. It’s just that I was sitting at the kitchen table with a low-grade fever and a miserable case of strep, and it would have been nice if someone asked me why I cried when I swallowed rather than demanding I move appliances.

This is how it is when you’re a mom. Everyone expects you to continue life as usual, even when you feel like you’re swallowing razors.

I asked my friends and every one of them has stories of being sick and having to rally because someone has to keep making sure the kids are safe and healthy and somewhat fed. I once let my 2-year-old sit in the middle of the living room floor, happily ripping all the pages out of his books, while I lay on the couch with a stomach bug. I figured he was safe. He was occupied. I could eventually replace the books. But I couldn’t summon the energy to make him stop and find something else to do at that point.

Crysti did something similar when her babies were young.

“I get migraines and when Andrew was a pre-walker I would get them (and I struggled hard with some depression) but of course couldn’t just stay in bed all day. There were a couple of days that I put him in his circle play bouncer thing with snacks and toys on it, a baby Einstein on the tv and I’d sleep on the floor next to him. My sweet mom reminded me that as long as he was safe and I was near, I was doing a good enough job as a mom. Good enough was a much better mantra than perfect!”

Kristin said that when she was pregnant with her second baby, she caught a stomach bug. “I remember running around trying to take care of my toddler with emergency trips to the bathroom every so often 😭😂 it was hectic!”

I’ve been there — taking kids to school or to the park to get them out of the house and all the while scoping out the nearest place to toss my cookies, just in case.

There is also the rare moment when the kids do realize you’re sick. And they come up next to you, lying prone and miserable on the couch, and pat your cheek with those tiny, chubby hands and ask, “You okay, Mommy?” I won’t say it makes everything better, but it does really really help.

Have you ever been sick and had to rally for the kids?

Toddler gave Olympic-gold-medalist-mom Kikkan Randall a special pep talk

by

Betsy Shaw

posted in Life

A cool thing happened at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. The only mother competing for Team U.S.A. won a gold medal together with her teammate, Jessie Diggins, in the Nordic team sprint competition.

Randall’s 22-month-old son, Breck, despite having traveled the world with her for two competition seasons, stayed behind with his grandparents while his mom made her fifth and final attempt at Olympic gold.

Nordic skiers are arguably the fittest athletes in the world. Their sport requires pushing oneself to maximum aerobic and anaerobic limits for mile after mile. We’re talking lungs exploding, arms pumping, legs gone to jello, stomach lurching with bile from sheer exertion, yet still pushing ever forward towards the finish line.

And, for anyone who doesn’t remember, parenting a toddler is also one of the craziest endurance sports imaginable. This all makes me think that Kikkan Randall deserves two gold medals. One for her athletic tenacity and perseverance, and one for sustaining that athletic tenacity and perseverance in the face of parenting a toddler.

Yet, in every interview with Randall I’ve read, the 35-year-old veteran athlete has described having a baby as an asset, not an impediment, to her athletic success. She credits motherhood with increasing her focus, and putting things into perspective.

Randall talks about how motherhood has helped rather than hindered her career in this NBC video.

“It’s really fun to be able to blend motherhood and skiing which has been my whole life.” she says in the video. “The best part about it, however the workout or race goes, is getting home and seeing that smile on his face. It gives perspective to everything I do.”

In a TeamUSA interview, I learned that, while she’s been in Korea for the Games, Randall has been staying in touch with her son via FaceTime.

In the interview she offered a sweet antidote about how her son motivated her on the night before the team sprint:

“As the call was winding down, she said, “OK, Mommy’s going to go race in the Olympics tomorrow, can you cheer me on?” He took his pacifier out and just said, “Gooooooooo.” Then put the pacifier back into his mouth.”

And Gooooo she did. Fast enough for Goooold.

Randall also told reporters that she showed her son her gold medal but he was more excited about the stuffed Olympic mascot toy she had been given right after the race.

For anyone wondering, like I am, how this elite athlete dealt with pregnancy and postpartum, a report in The Washington Post gives a bit of backstory. According to the article, this driven mom took just three weeks off after her son’s birth to “really take a chill,” but, after that, it was back to the grind. Her Instagram feed is filled with shots of little Breck going just about everywhere in backpacks, joggers, and pull along ski trailers, full-speed ahead, with his Olympian mom.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCL9g7tDSit/?hl=en&taken-by=kikkanimal
Randall’s Instagram feed is filled with fun training scenes interspersed with plenty of adorable mom-baby moments, like this one.  And this one, which I love, where she says she’s bummed to be missing a competition but happy to be home taking selfies with her little guy.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by KIMMO BRANDT/EPA/REX/Shutterstock (8433841gs)

One of the reasons I retired from my career as a professional athlete when I was 33 but still very competitive, was I knew I wanted to have a baby, or two, and could not imagine how I would combine my life as a mother, and my life of an athlete, in any sane or successful way. So whenever I read about women who manage to do the ultimate balancing act, I am in awe, and a little bit jealous.

Did you watch the Olympics? Have any favorite moments?

THE ART OF THE SKETCH: Michael Kors has teamed with renowned fashion artist David Downton on a special capsule collection. The designs will be shown at the Michael Kors runway show at the Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center Wednesday at 10 a.m. The capsule will hit stores this fall.
While additional details weren’t divulged, it is believed that the illustrations will appear on handbags.

The Special Guests You’ll See Alongside These Time’s Up Actresses

The red carpet at this year’s Golden Globe Awards looks much different than in previous years. Actresses across Hollywood are taking a stand against inequality and unfair treatment in the entertainment industry. By collectively wearing black dresses on the red carpet, these women are using their incredible visibility and the nationwide coverage that comes with this platform to speak up about what’s most important to them. Backed by A-list names, the Time’s Up movement is an initiative to incite real change in the entertainment industry—and, for that matter, every industry.

Further expressing these values, eight actresses affiliated with the Time’s Up movement will be bringing activists as their guests to the show. This move not only brings awareness to the powerful work they are doing, but it also shifts the conversation surrounding female actresses toward their work, beliefs, and values. Keep reading to see which activists will be joining actresses on the red carpet tonight.

Meryl Streep is bringing Ai-jen Poo.

Ai-jen Poo is the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and a leader in organizing female immigrant workers.

Amy Poehler is bringing Saru Jayaraman.

The actress will be accompanied by Saru Jayaraman, founder of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, an organization founded after 9/11 to aid displaced World Trade Center workers. Today her organization works to eliminate lower wages for tipped workers in the service industries.

Michelle Williams is bringing Tarana Burke.

Tarana Burke is a civil rights activist who created the #MeToo movement in 2006 to bring awareness to sexual assault survivors. Burke is also a co-founder of the youth organization Just Be, Inc., which focuses on the holistic well-being of girls of color.

Susan Sarandon is bringing Rosa Clemente.

Rosa Clemente is a community organizer, political commentator, Hip Hop activist, and the 2008 Green Party Vice-Presidential candidate.

Laura Dern is bringing Mónica Ramirez.

Founder of the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, Mónica Ramirez works to end workplace sexual violence.

Emma Stone is bringing Billie Jean King.

The former tennis star has worked to found the Women’s Tennis Association, the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, and the Women’s Sports Foundation as well as co-founding World TeamTennis. King and Stone “have developed something of an offscreen friendship following Stone’s portrayal of the tennis legend in Battle of the Sexes” reports Glamour.

Emma Watson is bringing Marai Larasi.

Marai Larasi is the executive director of Imkaan, a black and minority ethnic (BME) women’s organization working to respond to and prevent violence against marginalized women and girls in Europe.

Shailene Woodley is bringing Calina Lawrence.

Jack in the Box Teams Up With Snoop Dogg’s Cannabis Company for a Special Combo Meal

2018 is off to a great start for stoners in California, who can now enjoy the use of recreational marijuana—legally—thanks to a new state law that went into effect Monday. To top it off, cannabis enthusiasts will soon be able to satisfy their munchies with a weed-themed combination meal at Jack in the Box. Starting Jan. 18, the fast-food chain will offer the Merry Munchie Meal at select locations in Southern California for a limited time. The special combo box includes two tacos, five mini churros, three crispy chicken strips, a half serving of curly fries, a half serving of regular fries, and a small soft drink. Plus, it will only cost $ 4.20 (get it?).

Merry Jane, a marijuana-focused media outlet founded by Snoop Dogg in 2015, said the campaign celebrates the legalization of marijuana in California. Merry Jane COO Scott Chung added that the campaign with Jack in the Box “marries our brands’ voices.”

It’s also a smart business move for Jack in the Box, which has embraced cannabis culture for more than a decade. In 2013, the chain debuted “Munchie Meals,” a mashup of different food items, like a burger topped with curly fries and a spicy crispy chicken topped with onion rings, jalapeños, and nacho cheese sauce. In 2007, they released the “Jack in the Box Stoner” ad featuring a delusional young man who struggles to order tacos at a drive-thru during a late-night run.

“Jack’s Munchie Meals have been successful for us because of the authenticity of how we speak to our customers. This partnership is one more way for us to connect with them—whether you’re at a concert, up late playing video games or pulling an all-nighter,” Iwona Alter, CMO at Jack in the Box, said in a statement. “We are about welcoming all of our guests, no matter what they’re craving or why they’re craving it.”

The Merry Munchie Meals will be sold at three Jack in the Box locations in Snoop’s hometown, Long Beach, California, from Jan. 18–Jan. 25, 2018.

Dave Chappelle Has A New Netflix Special Called ‘The Bird Revelation’

Netflix has just doubled its Dave Chappelle offerings to ring in the New Year.

The streaming service announced Friday the addition of a second new standup special from the comic to air on Dec. 31.

As previously reported, “Equanimity” — which takes on Trump voters — was already set to launch Dec. 31. It was filmed in September at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C.

“Equanimity” will now be joined by “Dave Chappelle: The Bird Revelation, ” filmed Nov. 20 at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

The new specials expand Chappelle’s relationship with Netflix, where his original blockbuster deal in November included three specials. “The Age of Spin: Dave Chappelle Live at the Hollywood Palladium” and “Deep in the Heart of Texas: Dave Chappelle Live at Austin City Limits” debuted on Netflix earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Comedy Central is also giving viewers Chappelle for New Years. The network is airing a daylong New Year’s Day “Chappelle’s Show” marathon, featuring all 28 episodes leading up his seminal 2000 HBO stand-up special “Killin’ Them Softly.”

5 Things the Star Wars Holiday Special Got Right

The notorious “Star Wars Holiday Special” was so bad that it has only aired once on TV. Despite the special never being released on video, there are still some rare copies around. Even George Lucas himself has said, “If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it.”

However, despite the show’s infamy, there are five things that the Holiday Special did get right, and we count them down here.

All Those Cameos

No matter what anyone says about how pointless all the cameos were in the Holiday Special, it’s always fun seeing your favorite celebrities make a surprise appearance in a show or movie. And when they get a whole storyline to themselves, well then that’s really something special.

One of the best cameo storylines in the Holiday Special showcases Harvey Korman from The Carol Burnett Show, and his attempts to woo Bea Arthur who plays a bartender in the Mos Eisley Cantina (Bonus points for bringing back one of the most iconic sets from the Original Trilogy).

When the rowdy patrons of the cantina refuse to obey a planet-wide curfew imposed by the Galactic Empire, Bea resorts to singing the song “Goodnight, But Not Goodbye,” which causes them to waltz out the door.

Chewbacca’s Family

More Wookiees is always a good thing, especially when they are related to the most iconic Wookiee of them all. While the scenes involving Itchy (Chewie’s dad), Lumpy (Chewie’s son), and Malla (Chewie’s wife) may be a little weird (like, why these Wookiees wearing snuggies and walking in outer space?) we can all agree that seeing more of Chewbacca’s background is definitely welcome. After all, when compared to his fellow human Rebels, we know next to nothing about the furred giant.

The Holiday Special also treated fans to the first ever appearance of the Wookiee home-planet Kashyyyk. After all, we still haven’t seen Han Solo’s Corellia nor Leia’s Alderaan.

Leia Singing

It’s always great when one of your favorite actors reveals a secret talent, and this scene of Carrie Fisher singing is no exception. It’s a special treat in a film with plenty of mistakes, and it truly makes the Holiday Special noteworthy as one of the rare moments we see Carrie break out into song on film. We give this scene bonus points for Harrison Ford’s reaction 30 seconds in. Despite the fact that this scene came out of nowhere, we can forgive Carrie as we can bet she was just as confused as the rest of us.

Boba Fett

Considered by many to be the only watchable moment from the entire Holiday Special, this cartoon gives us our first introduction to the famed bounty hunter, Boba Fett. When Luke and Han contract a mysterious virus, Boba Fett teams up with Chewie to find the cure. However, the short takes a dark turn when it is revealed Boba Fett is secretly working with Darth Vader to capture the Rebels.

While it’s significance in the overarching universe of Star Wars is minimal, the short cartoon is one of the only parts of the Special with a coherent plot. Seeing Darth Vader cross paths with Luke, and possibly the greatest bounty hunter in the galaxy take shots at the Rebels are just two reasons why people are still watching this cartoon nearly 40 years later.

Another Music Cameo

When Stormtroopers raid Chewie’s home, the Rebels turn to music to distract the invaders. And strangely, it works. Although, like most things, it doesn’t make much sense in the context of the Holiday Special (why are the Stormtroopers even raiding Chewie’s home?!), this goofy moment veils a surprise cameo by ’70s rock group Jefferson Starship, with this catchy tune providing a memorable moment in a Special most seek to forget.

New ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special Trailer Showcases Doctor Rivalry

As the Doctor Who Christmas special episode draws ever closer, a new trailer has dropped to get us all in a tizzy. As if we weren’t already somewhere close to fever pitch. And it brings us some hitherto undiscovered revelations — most prominently that there’s some friction between the First and Twelfth Doctors, who both feature in the episode.

We see Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor introduce himself as the Doctor. As he does so, David Bradley’s First Doctor responds: “You may be a Doctor but I am the Doctor.”

Capaldi’s Doctor then goes on to explain to Bradley’s that he is his future self. Bradley’s Doctor looks at him quizzically, and asks, “Sunglasses?”

“They’re sonic,” explains Capaldi.

“Indoors?” comes Bradley’s cutting follow-up.

We also witness Capaldi saying, “I will stop you. I will stop all of you,” before our first look at an enchanted glass figure teased in the recently released synopsis.

There’s also a better look at the much-anticipated regeneration sequence.

Called “Twice Upon A Time”, the episode is one-hour long — 15 minutes longer than a standard episode. In the episode, we will see Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor bow out as he regenerates into Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor — the first female Doctor in the show’s history. The episode also marks the departure of outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat. Chris Chibnall steps into the role for the next season, due to premiere in Autumn of 2018.

The-Doctor-New-Costume
Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor will make her debut in the Doctor Who Christmas special.

What’s It About?

Here’s the official synopsis for the episode:

The magical final chapter of the Twelfth Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) journey sees the Time Lord team up with his former self, the first ever Doctor (David Bradley — Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) and a returning Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), for one last adventure.

Two Doctors stranded in an Arctic snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. Enchanted    glass people, stealing their victims from frozen time. And a World War One captain destined to die on the battlefield, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story.

An uplifting new tale about the power of hope in humanity’s darkest hours, “Twice Upon A Time” marks the end of an era. But as the Doctor must face his past to decide his future, his journey is only just beginning…

“Twice Upon A Time” is written by Steven Moffat, directed by Rachel Talalay, and executive produced by Brian Minchin. The 60-minute special guest stars Mark Gatiss as The Captain and Nikki Amuka-Bird as the voice of the glass woman, and will see Peter Capaldi’s Doctor regenerate into the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker).

“Twice Upon A Time” premieres on BBC1 at 5.30pm on December 25 and will air on BBC America a few hours later.

Monica Lewinsky Blasts New TV Special Detailing Her Affair With Bill Clinton

Monica Lewinsky didn’t shy away from sharing her thoughts about a forthcoming HLN special titled The Monica Lewinsky Scandal. The 44-year-old author took to Twitter on Tuesday, November 28, to offer her insight on the name.

“Fixed it for you. You’re welcome,” the former White House intern captioned a screenshot of an article promoting the two-hour special airing on Sunday, December 2, at 9 p.m. ET. on CNN’s sister network. The Monica: Her Story author replaced the title with her own correction, suggesting it be called The Starr Investigation or The Clinton Impeachment instead.

Lewinsky received a great deal of support on Twitter following her Tweet on Tuesday.

President Barack Obama’s former aide, Alyssa Mastromonaco, also backed Lewinsky on Twitter while using the hashtag, “#IStandWithMonica.”

As previously reported, Lewinsky engaged in a sexual affair with then-President Clinton while she was an intern in 1998. Lewinsky has since spoken out about being publicly shamed and ridiculed for years after the news of the relationship went public.

“I felt like every layer of my skin and my identity were ripped off of me in ’98 and ’99,” the fashion designer told the Guardian in April 2016. “It’s a skinning of sorts. You feel incredibly raw and frightened. But I also feel like the shame sticks to you like tar.”

While giving a TED Talk in Vancouver, Canada, in March 2015, Lewinsky further opened up about the scandal and revealed that it will always affect her. “Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of my mistake, and I regret that mistake deeply,” she said at the time. “In 1998, after having been swept up in an improbable romance, I was then swept into the eye of a political, legal, and media maelstrom like we had never seen before … I lost my reputation and my dignity. I lost my sense of self.”

Although Bill and Hillary Clinton have refrained from publicly supporting Lewinsky in the past, their view on the affair has changed as numerous allegations of sexual assault against men in Hollywood have surfaced in recent months.

Hillary’s communication director Jennifer Palmieri, who also worked for Bill’s administration, spoke out about the repercussions of the affair during an interview with MSNBC earlier this month. “Monica Lewinsky was my intern and the relationship the president had with her was very inappropriate,” Palmieri said. “It was a consensual relationship, but he was the President of the United States and she was a 24-year-old intern — that is taking advantage of a power dynamic on a historic scale.”

How to Accommodate Special Diets this Holiday Season

The holidays are around the corner and many of us are probably already in full party planning mode. If you are hosting a holiday event this year, the foremost thought that is probably running through your head is “what am I going to serve?”

Not to put too much pressure on you, but a truly excellent host always does his or her best to accommodate the uniqueness of the guests present at an event. Understanding and accommodating your guest’s food needs and preferences is, in my opinion, the hallmark of a great host.

There are a number of physiological, personal and religious factors that may shape your guests food choices, and it is important for you to be aware of those needs.

With that in mind, today`s article will discuss some of the more common food restrictions that you are likely to encounter in your guests and provide you with feedback and strategies to help accommodate them should the need arise.

Let`s take a look at the different categories of special diet requirements:

Personal Values

Veganism-Vegetarianism:

There appears to be an increasing movement, especially among young people, away from the consumption of products of animal origin (meat, milk, eggs, fish, poultry etc.) as a response to concerns over the ethical implications of animal agriculture and animal welfare.  Although vegetarians tend to be more flexible with their consumption of certain foods, a true vegan will not consume anything of animal origin (including honey & gelatin). There are also some foods that you might think are vegan, but are not.

Here are two quick tips to help accommodate vegan and vegetarian guests:

  1. Offer a non-animal source of protein: Depending on what else you plan to serve, accommodating a vegan or vegetarian may be as simple as ensuring a non-animal source of protein is available. Your best bets are tofu, lentils, chickpeas or some variety of bean (ie: navy beans, lima beans etc.).
  2. Separate animal and non-animal foods: Do not combine dairy or meat based sauces with foods of plant-origin such as grains or veggies, as this will mean they are no longer edible by vegans and certain vegetarians.

Physiological Needs

Food Allergies/Intolerances

A food allergy is a very serious consideration.  If you know one of your guests to be allergic to a certain type of food (milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, and wheat are the most common) great precautions must be taken to ensure that that food ( or items containing it) do not come in contact with that individual’s meal. Have a look at this Health Canada resource to learn more and be thoroughly review the ingredients of any packaged product used in preparation of the guests meal.

A food intolerance (the most common being lactose intolerance) is not as severe as a food allergy because it involves a gastrointestinal rather than an immune response. In order words, a food intolerance is not life threatening but may cause stomach pain or other digestive issues.

Celiac Disease/ Gluten Intolerance:

Guests with either of these conditions will need to avoid gluten for different reasons, celiac disease being the more severe. Although there are a whole host of primarily starch-containing foods that contain gluten (including anything with wheat, barley, rye) there are two tips you will certainly need to follow:

  1. Offer a gluten-free starch option: This could simply mean offering rice, quinoa or potatoes as a side dish over pasta or bread, or even serving gluten-free varieties of bread or pasta. It is very important that gluten-free foods do not come in contact with any gluten containing foods, especially if your guest(s) have celiac disease.
  2. Familiarize yourself with hidden sources of gluten: Gluten is also found in an incredible amount of places you might not suspect. Licorice, soy sauce, vinegar and salad dressings may all contain gluten. Any processed/packaged good with a long list of ingredients may contain some gluten, so stick to simple whole foods that you know to be gluten-free and ask your guest for his or her insights if need be.

You can learn more about avoiding gluten here.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a group of conditions (primarily Type 1/Type 2) characterized by poor physiological blood sugar control. In people with diabetes, the amount of carbohydrates a person eats at a single meal will likely need be self-regulated. There are two steps you can follow as a host that will help individuals with diabetes:

  1. Serve carbohydrate-rich foods simply: Rely on herbs/spices rather than rich sauces to season common carbohydrate containing foods such as pasta, potatoes, rice, quinoa etc. This will help your guests to better estimate the amount of carbohydrates they are consuming. If you serve packaged desserts or snacks, keep the food labels so your guests can assess the amount of carbohydrates in the foods being served.
  2. Serve specific types of carbohydrates: Certain types of carbohydrate containing foods ( such as quinoa, brown rice, whole grain pasta/bread, sweet potatoes, lentils) are considered to be particularly strong choices for people living with diabetes, and just about anyone else for that matter.

Other than that, individuals living with diabetes benefit from many of the same healthful foods that anyone else does, especially vegetables!

Lactose Intolerance

Guests with lactose intolerance have trouble with the digestion of lactose, one of the sugars found in milk products. Your best bet in accommodating people with lactose intolerance is avoiding milk-based products and sauces and offering some non-dairy variety of dessert. Avoid using items such as butter, cheese, cream or milk powder in your food preparation and selection and opt instead for rice /soy/almond milk or tofu if need be.

Religious Restrictions

Islam

It is common for practicing Muslims to avoid the consumption of pork (and its by-products) and any meat that is not Halal. Serving Halal meat, which is available at many grocery chains, is an important consideration for Muslim guests. It is also important that separate utensils be used such that there is no cross contamination between Halal and non Halal meats. Practicing Muslim’s will also avoid alcohol. If you are not confident that your meal is prepared appropriately for your Muslim guest(s), do not hesitate to confer with them prior to the event.

Hinduism

Strict Hindus are vegetarians and even those who may not be strict will likely avoid eating beef due to the cow’s sacredness in their religion. Much like a vegan/vegetarian, non-animal sourced food options will be important to offer to accommodate Hindu guests.

 Judaism

There are different extents to which Jewish individuals will practice kosher eating habits. Some will practice them fully and formally while others may eat without any restriction at all. It will be important to understand the precise restrictions your guest(s) abide by.

Here are some examples of Kosher practices:

  • No meat/dairy at the same meal ( one or the other)
  • All meat must be designated as kosher
  • No pork or shellfish
  • Kosher wine only

The list above is not exhaustive, but represents some of the more common and pertinent dietary restrictions.

Be the host with the most!

No one said that being a great host was easy, but believe me when I say your guests will be beyond appreciative of the consideration you provide them.  In most cases, special diets stem from intense personal beliefs or physiological needs and are almost always non-negotiable.

I applaud you as an intrepid host for taking the time to read today’s article and I wish you and your party guests a happy and healthy holiday season!

Sessions Reportedly Considering Second Special Counsel for Hillary Clinton, Uranium One

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is considering appointing a special counsel to investigate a range of Republican issues, The Washington Post reports. Among those concerns are Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server and Russia’s purchase of Uranium One, a Canadian mining company with U.S. operations. President Donald Trump has previously tweeted about the issues and called on Sessions to investigate. Politicians and pundits have previously speculated that Republicans might attempt to appoint a second special counsel to investigate the Uranium One sale in an effort to discredit current special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Mueller was FBI director at the time of the Uranium One sale and did not take action on the sale, leading Republicans to accuse Mueller of Russian collusion. Appointing a second special counsel to investigate the first special counsel could potentially make Mueller’s investigation of the Trump campaign appear biased.

Netflix Just Canceled a Louis C.K. Stand-Up Special Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Netflix is the latest company to cut ties with comedian Louis C.K. following allegations that he masturbated in front of several women without consent.

The company announced Friday that it will not move forward with Louis C.K.’s second planned stand-up comedy special. Netflix inked a two-special deal with C.K. in February; the first special aired in April.

“The allegations made by several women in The New York Times about Louis C.K.’s behavior are disturbing,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “Louis’s unprofessional and inappropriate behavior with female colleagues has led us to decide not to produce a second stand-up special, as had been planned.”

Five women accused the comedian of sexual misconduct in a New York Times investigation published on Nov. 9. C.K. has yet to address the allegations, but a spokesperson said he will issue a written statement in the coming days.

Netflix is only the latest company to distance itself from Louis C.K. Distribution company Orchard Films scrapped the release of his latest film, I Love You, Daddy. Meanwhile, HBO announced that it was dropping the Lucky Louie star from appearing in an upcoming comedy and removing his past projects from its On Demand services. FX, which has worked with the comedian on a number of the his projects, said it was “troubled” by the allegations and that it would review the situation.

Idris Elba: Falling in love is special

OHMYGOSSIP — Idris Elba says falling in love with his girlfriend Sabrina Dhowre was “pretty special”.
The 45-year-old actor began dating the former Miss Vancouver winner whilst filming his upcoming romance movie ‘The Mountain Between Us’ in Canada, and has said that meeting her meant life imitated art in the most beautiful way.
He said: “Falling in love while making a movie about falling in love is pretty special.”
Sabrina, 29, made her red carpet debut with Idris at Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, and Idris admits it was “nice” to be able to go public with their romance.
He added to People’s ‘The Jess Cagle Interview’: “It definitely got noticed because I try to keep my personal life different. I think it’s an interesting space, especially for her. She’d never done a red carpet before and I tend not to do that. It was nice actually.”
The ‘Star Trek Beyond’ actor – who has 15-year-old daughter Isan with his ex-wife Kim Norgaard, as well as three-year-old son Winston with his former partner Naiyana Garth – is believed to have been dating Sabrina for at least seven months, and it was recently revealed he is “proud” to show her to the world.
A source said: “It’s believed Idris and Sabrina have been dating for around seven months. They’re having a great time getting to know each other and Idris feels strongly enough about Sabrina for them to be talked about in public.
“Having her on his arm on a red carpet shows how serious he is about her as he doesn’t do these things lightly.
“He usually likes to keep that side of his life private but he’s proud to show Sabrina off on his arm. It’s been a different story for Sabrina, who has uploaded several pictures of Idris to her Snapchat account.”

When asked why she had decided to start talking about her sister’s history with cancer now, Longoria replied, “I haven’t spoken about my sister on purpose and then when this campaign came up I felt like, you know what, I’m literate on the breast cancer subject and I didn’t even know about metastatic breast cancer.”

“So I thought, how many people don’t know about this? And if I have a platform that can help women learn about this, if I have a platform that can help raise funds to find a cure for it, that’s even better,” Longoria added.

“It’s definitely important because it’s the least fielded, terminal cancer,” Longoria continued. “We’ve had so many advances in preventative and early stage and that’s great because there’s nothing better than stage zero. But these women are stage four and they usually have a 2 year life expectancy. And there is no cure so these are the women in most need.”

When asked about what advice she had for women who wanted more info about metastatic breast cancer, Longoria said to put themselves first for once.

“Women are horrible at putting themselves first,” Longoria said. “And the thing that suffers is your health.”

“So I would encourage every woman that comes here to be their own advocate,” she added. “because you gotta insist on that test or insist on that sonogram — insist on that extra step. And don’t take no for an answer when it comes to your own health. That’s a general life thing, not just health. It’s the airplane thing, put your own mask on before helping others.”

Longoria has previously called her sister Liza “her hero.”

“She was my hero growing up,” Longoria told Parade in 2007. “It was a blessing to watch her overcome every obstacle – tying her shoes, putting on a shirt, getting out the front door. And yet she still had a job and would come home on the bus by herself and help with dinner. You could only imagine the hurdles she encountered every minute of the day.”

She even said her sister helped her career in some ways. “Liza was a role model to get me ready for life in Hollywood,” Longoria continued. “You don’t take health for granted. You don’t take life for granted. It seems so insignificant to go, ‘Darn it, I didn’t get that movie role,’ or, ‘Darn it, so-and-so is wearing the same dress as me to the Emmys.’ ”

Eva Longoria has teamed up with Novartis and the Kiss This 4MBC campaign. For every boomerang and selfie posted with #kissthis4mbc Novartis will donate $ 10 to metastatic breast cancer research. More information can be found at kissthis4mbc.com.

The 10 best mainstream car seats for special needs kids

There are many car seats on the market custom-made for children with special needs, but they are expensive: about $ 550 to $ 2000, or more. Since special needs parents have just a few other expenses, buying a special needs car seat may be difficult, if not impossible.

But there are options. And though you may know know it, there are experts known as CPSTs — child passenger safety technicians — who have received special needs training. These experts are educated in how to safely restrain children and install car seats properly, as well as in finding just the right seat for children with special needs. And here’s a little secret they know, but you may not: They always try mainstream seats before special-needs seats. Why?

“As long as a child can fit in a traditional seat we really want to leave them there,” says Oakland, California CPST Kimberly Wilkinson. “Often, insurance will only pay for one seating option every five years — if parents use that money for a car seat, they may not have the money for a special adaptive highchair or something else.”

“Conventional seats far less expensive — you can get them for under $ 100,” points out the Juvenile Product Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA)’s Director of Child Passenger Safety Joseph M. Colella. “They’re also easier to get. You can just order them online; no waiting for insurance forms to go through. They’re also so much easier to use. Some of the larger special needs seats require a heavy-duty tether anchor, and you have to take your car to get retrofitted” at enormous expense and hassle.

Abbie Patterson, an Easton, Pennsylvania CPST and President of Car Seats for the Littles, agrees: “You want to try conventional whenever possible — and many insurances only cover one seat, one time.”

But will a conventional seat work for your child? It depends, of course, on what special needs your child has. A child with breathing difficulties needs something different from a child with low tone, who needs something different from a child in a cast or who has medical equipment.

You’ll have to confer with your child’s own specialists as to what will work for you. Consulting with a CPST with special needs training is also a great idea — you can find one by searching on the National Child Passenger Safety Certification site. Be sure to check “Special Needs” under “Extra Training” to find one who can give you the most expert help. Costs vary — some CPSTs, such as Kimberly Wilkinson, even do special needs car seat fittings for free, since she knows how many other things special needs parents need to save money for.

But in general, the experts we spoke with recommended that parents look for seats with the following:

1. Recline options: Children who have low tone, breathing issues, or trouble sitting up may be safest and most comfortable in a seat with a deep recline, or many recline options, so you can find the best one for your child. Look for seats with 2 or more recline options, or those that can lie flat or nearly flat in the car.
2. High rear-facing weight and height limits: Most conventional car seats recline more fully when rear-facing — seats with higher limits can be used longer, and children in rear-facing seats (even typically developing ones) are safer in them in the event of a crash. Look for seats that allow rear-facing up to at least 40 pounds (some go to 45, or even 55 pounds), and a rear-facing height limit of at least 40 inches.
3. High harness weight limits: If your child has difficulty sitting up, head/neck control issues, or behavioral issues, a harness can keep them in place safely. Look for a harness that holds children up to at least 65 pounds; some even go up to 90 pounds. “Virtually every convertible goes up to 65 pounds these days — 40 pounds used to be the industry standard,” notes Colella.
4. Seats with lower or shallow sides in the sitting area: If you have a child with a broomstick or hip cast, a seat with these lower sides allows for better leg positioning. A seat with deep armrests may make positioning more difficult.
5. Extra padding and positioning options: If you have a child with missing limbs or other physical differences, or a child who’s smaller than average, some seats have harness or crotch strap adjustment features that can make things fit better.
6. A high back with deeper sides in the shoulder area: If your child has trunk control issues, the deep sides can make them more comfortable or help keep them in place. Highback boosters may work better for many kids than backless models.

With all that in mind, here are some conventional seats to try.

1. Graco MyRide 65: Patterson calls this convertible seat “one of the go-tos for a lot of techs for a long time,” because the My Ride 65 has a lot going for it. It holds kids rear-facing to 40 pounds (and until the top of their head is less than an inch from the top of the shell), and forward-facing in a harness to 65 pounds and 49 inches tall. It’s got a nice, deep recline, and deep head-cradling “wings.” It’s very reasonably priced too. On the con side, it’s a big seat that may not fit small cars. Oh, and though it sounds like the Graco “clones” (MySize, Fit4Me, Size4Me, and Head Wise) this is a different seat.
Buy it: Graco MyRide 65, $ 95.00

2. Chicco NextFit: The NextFit convertible, which can recline to 9 (!!) different positions, has a good chance of fitting most cars and most kids. it also has very high rear-facing height limit, so if your child is on the tall side, you can leave them rear facing for a long time. It holds kids from 5-40 pounds and 49 inches rear facing; 22-65 pounds and 49 inches front-facing. You will find it in several different “flavors” in stores, all with the same height/weight limits: the NextFit, NextFit CX (has an easier-to-handle harness and extra crotch buckle pad), NextFit Zip (pictured, has the CX’s features, plus a cup holder, improved harness adjuster, and a wonderful, washable zip-off seat cover that’s actually easy to put back on, too).
Buy it: Chicco NextFit Zip, $ 279.99
