Turn your bathroom into a stylish and affordable sanctuary with these simple changes.
SERENITY NOW When imagining the ideal spa, one can’t help but think of the soothing music that so often sets the mood. For the ultimate Pavlovian response, install wireless or Bluetooth speakers in discrete areas of your bathroom to make sure that gentle instrumental tones are always available to enhance your experience.
FLUFF IS THE WORD As tactile creatures, we tend to associate soft, fluffy textures with the pinnacle of high-end indulgence. Splurging on soft, white bath sheets is the first step towards the spa zone. Add a luxurious bath mat, fluffy hand and face towels and you’re on your way to treating your body like royalty. To amp up the comfort level, installing a towel warmer will maximize the enjoyment you receive from all of your new plush accessories. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a cozy bathrobe to take the spa into your bedroom and beyond.
LIT FROM WITHIN To truly capture the spa-like ambience, ensure that your lighting scheme includes various sources and levels of brightness. Layers of lighting create a soft, flattering look and aids in the relaxation promoted in the spa environment. Dimmers will be your best friend in achieving that soothing glow that leads all the way towards an evening soak. Don’t neglect heavenly scented candles to complete the effect.
COLOR ME CALM Sticking to the right color palette will transform your bathroom into a space that inspires tranquility. A neutral color scheme of creamy grays, soft whites or pale blues will calm your nerves and reduce the stresses of the day. Complement the gentle tones with elements from nature like a leafy plant, a shell soap dish, or a wooden tray to further relax the senses.
GO CLEAN The latest trend in the blogosphere is to go through all of your makeup and toiletries to remove anything unhealthy for you or the environment. By ensuring that you only keep the products that are good for you, two goals will have been accomplished. A healthier skincare and makeup regime and a pared down number of items to clutter up your new spa space is ideal. Once only the necessities remain, choose attractive straw or clear acrylic containers to store things in the most pleasing way possible.
Manscaping has been popular for some time now. While men are still trimming, shaving and plucking some parts of their body, the top of the head is one area our gender doesn’t typically want to be left bare.
In this particular piece, I really want to focus away from the products for a change, and really delve into some of the great styles that men need to pay attention to. From classically inspired cuts to more modern flairs, one thing that’s out now is the fohawk and for good reason – it’s about as ridiculous as the name itself. Sure, if you’re 16, the girls might think it looks cute on you, but for the thirty-year-old in the boardroom, rest assured no one is going to be swooning over it.
So for those men who are interested in really grasping their hair by the strand (so to speak), read on, and let’s explore some great styles and cuts for everything from short hair to long.
The Prohibition High-and-Tight
The Prohibition High and Tight hair
It was very popular in the mid-1920s and with shows like Boardwalk Empire and Peaky Blinders; they all had very similar hairstyles. They are very short on the side with longer hair on the back and it gives you that rough edge that’s kind of cool but at the same time, very classic. It’s a style that works for anything from fine to thick hair as long as it’s reasonably straight and not too curly.
Personally, I’ve somewhat wavy hair and I can still pull that style off by using a very strong gel which is available at any drugstore. Even though my hair has a mind of its own, gels allow me to get a fairly straight look and it easily comes out just by washing it with water and regular shampoo.
Jimmy Darmody – Boardwalk Empire
The tricky part about this haircut is that when it grows out, it can look quite bad so you have to pay attention and go to your barber on a regular basis. Apart from a strong gel, of course, you could also use wax, you can use a pomade or fiber. It really all depends on the hair and what works for you.
I’ve tried many things and pomade for me created a pomade acne which meant I had lots of zits on my forehead and the sheets and the pillowcases were always dirty and it was a huge pain.
In terms of length, I suggest you have at least two inches on top and if you’re at the barber, tell them to go with number one to start and you can see how you’ll like it and how it blends in. Of course, you can also have longer hair all the way up to five or six inches but then it gets a little borderline.
The Pompadour AKA The James Dean
James Dean’s hairstyle
You’ll need a little more on top, but this classic cut is coming back with a bang. Often called the James Dean, this updated version can be done with more than just naturally wavy hair. Obviously, if you are looking to replicate the exact James Dean look, you need some curl to your locks, but the Pompadour can now be done with straight hair as well. You’re going to want a bit of hair on the sides this time, but it can be done with less. The goal is more on top since this particular style makes use of combing the hair back and to the side meaning that with extremely short hair, you’re just going to look like a porcupine.
If you’re new to this hairstyle, I suggest you go to a barber because it all starts with a hairdryer. Yes, if you don’t have one of those, you can safely invest in them it’s not just something for women. For the pompadour, you also need good hair products.
For most men, a medium pomade or grooming cream is the best way to achieve that look that looks typically like the cool James Dean.
Most barbers should be familiar with this look. It’s something that’s been around since the mid-1900s, and young or old, this cut should be a pre-requisite for barbers working in a salon or barbershop. If your barber doesn’t know this cut like the back of their hand – run.
I’m not talking about the 1980s Gordon Gekko look that just looks dated today. Of course, if you have longer hair on top, you can comb it back and have a little flair and not get quite an extreme Gordon Gekko look.
The modern version of flair
If you want to wear the updated version of it, you want a square cut and if you tell your barber, he’ll know what you mean. For this hairstyle, a mousse works best and you just work it in your hair and then comb it back. I suggest not to comb it back quite straight. You want a little wave so it looks more pleasing.
The Gent Gazette
Gentleman’s Gazette style – disconnected undercut
It’s the kind of a haircut I typically wear. I part it on one side and initially, I started parting it in front, in the middle, and I moved all the way out. Usually, my sides are cut shorter all the way up so I get that nice transition. At the same time, it grows out in a way that doesn’t look terrible. Usually, you go get a haircut about every three to four weeks.
Top view, disconnected undercut, side part
If you want to see how I get that hairstyle step-by-step and what my hair looks like without product, please check out this video here.
göt2b – second from the left is what you want
Personally, I use a very strong gel got2b from Henkel. Traditionally you would do it with pomade but unfortunately, I just had many bad experiences with it.
This isn’t what you’re thinking. I’m not suggesting you just roll out of bed and walk into the office. This is the “gentleman’s” version of the bedhead and one that’s a little more hipster and rock and roll than some of the others.
It’s similar to a pompadour. It’s shorter on the side, higher on top but it’s just a little more disheveled which could look more relaxed. It’s particularly popular with hipsters, often combined with a beard.
You want to tell your barber to keep it high on the sides and instead of combing it back, you’re pulling it forward and you dishevel it slightly with your hands. This is definitely a cut you don’t want to be slicked back, otherwise, it looks greasy.
In terms of products, you want to stick with something with a matte finish and it can be like a grooming cream or a foaming cream, not a pomade, they’re just too stiff. I suggest you start with damp hair and then use a blow-dryer and your fingers to kind of dry it in shape and the only problem is strong winds. To counteract that, you can work with a bit of hairspray.
There are so many haircuts popular today that to list them all would be difficult. Many people with longer hair will opt to style it in a samurai or above the shoulders, whereas people with shorter hair can mix and match the above cuts to give various looks based on their mood or style that day.
My biggest tip is to work with your hair and face shape rather than against it. A good stylist or barber will be able to give you any cut you want and will make you feel great leaving the salon, but once you’re home it’s up to you to maintain it. By choosing a cut that doesn’t suit your hair type, length or face shape, you’re setting yourself up to fail and in the process, look ridiculous.
Here are a few quick tips:
1. Short on the sides looks longer up top. If you keep your sides shorter, you can keep the top shorter too which is easier to maintain yet it will look longer than if the sides grow out. In my case my ears will also look bigger and my wife always teases me about it.
2. Shave the part. I find a nice part to be quite pleasing and you can really achieve it easily by combing it forward first and then backwards to get that proper line. I find that correcting the part is more difficult than starting all over. If you’re having a lot of issues, you can also shave the part with a razor. It’s not something I personally resort to but I definitely know people who swear by it. So give it a try if you have issues getting a nice part you desire.
3. Buy only quality products. Now personally, I’d like to get a more high-quality product that cost a little more but honestly I’ve tried so many things and the got2b is the only thing that works so far for me. If you have a better alternative, please make some suggestions in the comments.
Take time to shampoo every few days
4. Don’t wash your hair daily. By doing so, you’re removing healthy and important oils and you’re just drying out your hair. If you wash your hair every second or third day, you should be just fine. I don’t know if you ever noticed but your hair is likely to look healthier and it’s easy to work with the second day after you’ve washed it than right after you’ve washed it. If you workout or exercise a lot and you feel compelled to wash your hair, I suggest to use conditioner instead and not always shampoo. It will be better for your hair and not as harsh. Also, it gets rid of all the grime and grit of your hair without stripping it of all the essential oils.
5. It’s okay to have multiple products. Sometimes you want different hairstyles that require different products. Just test a few things and figure out what works and doesn’t work for you. Every hair is the same and no hair is like the other.
6. Invest in a quality comb. I know the 50 cent or dollar store combs – very tempting. They’re made out of plastic. They’re cheap. They seem to be exactly the same ones as more expensive combs yet a quality comb will cost you about 20 bucks. It’s usually made of hard rubber and it’s much better for your scalp. It’s much more comfortable and you can also comb in a more precise way. Personally, I’ve tried horn combs but I find the teeth to be too stiff and too brittle so over time they’ll just break.
7. Establish a good relationship with your barber. Make sure to tip your barber well; five to ten dollars are perfectly acceptable, they’ll be happy, they’ll remember you, and they’ll fit you in when it’s tight and you need a haircut quickly. They will go the extra mile to get you that haircut that you want and looks great on you.

Adult Lunch Boxes That Will Blend In With Your Other Bags
Whether you’re ready for an upgrade or just want a new way to carry your lunch on your commute, whether it’s by car or public transit, we found a range of options and price points. Links, where to buy, and prices are below each image:
We’re loving bento boxes for their minimalist look. Plus, most of them are stackable and great for meal planning when portion control is one of your priorities. Several of the containers even come with flatware, so you won’t find yourself needing to keep a box of plasticware in your desk.
Insulated Containers for Adults: Keep Hot Foods Hot and Cold Foods Cold
Insulated containers have come a long way since you were bringing your own cold milk or hot soup to elementary school, but the basic principle is still there: maintain the temperature of whatever is inside. (Hint: search in sports & outdoors for more options.)
Whether you have a long commute, don’t trust your coworkers when it comes to the office fridge, or if there simply isn’t room for your stylish lunch bag without having to take out all of your perishables when you get to work, here are a couple ice pack options — a smaller one and a larger one — with good reviews.
If you find yourself using too many plastic baggies, and don’t really want to rinse and clean something that is already fairly flimsy and not meant for more than one use, check out these reusable baggies and food wraps.
Organic Reusable Food Wraps by Etee, Pack of 3 Wraps are made of hemp and Certified Organic cotton fabric infused with USDA Certified Organic Beeswax, coniferous tree resins, a touch of non-gmo soy wax, organic jojoba oil, organic cinnamon essential oil, and organic clove essential oil (Amazon, $ 17.95)
Other Ways to be Ecofriendly at Lunchtime At Work:
Many restaurants, including office cafeterias, obviously offer reusable plates, cups, and silverware if you’re dining in, but if you live in one of the markets with Just Salad – Chicago, New York, Philadephia – they have reusable bowls for all orders, even takeout.
Finally, if you need to use a straw, consider bringing your own. Many options for stainless steel, silicone, glass, and other reusable materials can be found on Amazon.

We try to keep our major shopping guides updated regularly, but sometimes they need a major overhaul — that’s been the case for our Guide to the Best Tops for Under Women’s Suits for a while now. I’m proud to say we’ve finally done it — you can check it out here. In the meantime, ladies, let’s talk: what are your favorite, most stylish tops for under suits?
For my $ .02: I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I’ve always been a fan of wearing slightly fancy t-shirts under suits whenever possible, provided they’re easy to launder — I particularly like that a sleeved bottom layer means that my suit blazer can go longer without being laundered. I’d say my next favorite option is the popover blouse, like many readers have noted — much less problems with gaping! On the flip side, a cowl top is one of my least favorite things to wear under suits — they never seem to lay properly with the lapels. Similarly, wrap tops can sometimes fight the line of the lapels — and for me anything that’s too high-necked (like a crew neck or turtleneck) is usually not flattering, and requires extra thought to “lower the neckline” with a pearl necklace or something. The secretary blouse, as pictured here, has never been one of my favorites — too hard to get the tie just right — but it can be a great look (and it’s one of Selina Meyer’s favorite looks!). Ladies, let’s hear from you — what are your favorite stylish tops for under suits? Is there anything you definitely wouldn’t wear under suits? Do you prefer to layer different tops under jardigans or cardigans, or can your closet do double duty?

Reader D wrote in, asking us to update our older post on the best commuting shoes — so let’s discuss, particularly since the weather is finally getting warmer! Here’s her question:
Can you please update the ‘The Best CommutingShoes‘ post? I left my Born Crown Collection nadine’s at a hotel by accident a few months ago and I’m so devastated!! They are no longer available and I loved them so much. Please share updates…….I’m searching for a replacement and need help! Thank you!!!!!
Interesting. (The shoe she mentions is sold out, but you can see it here if you’re curious. This option looks pretty similar, FWIW…) A few notes on what I think makes for the best commuting shoes in 2018 (particularly so you don’t look like the sad model in the stock photo at top)…:

It maintains your hem length. This only matters if you’re wearing full-length pants, which are coming back in style (particularly in flare form) — you cannot wear flat commuting shoes with shoes that you also intend to wear with 3″ heels unless you’re ok with the hem dragging on the ground (or your pants being hemmed too short). To that end, if you’re into flared, bootcut, or even straight-leg pants that are full-length, you may want to check out some of the fugly-shoes-with-height kind of options — FLY London, Eileen Fisher, Børn, Earthies, and Gentle Souls are all good bets.
For the most conservative offices (or the most stylish women), you may want to look for commuting shoes that are comfortable, but cute enough to pass as your “look for the day” if you bump into a colleague on your commute. If you’re going to feel uncomfortable meeting the VIP partner or CEO in the subway wearing your flip flops or weekend sneakers, you may want to look for other shoes. It’s also ok to consider what your commute actually looks like here — if you just want to be able to walk outside the networking event, put on more comfortable shoes while you’re standing outside hunting for a cab or walking a block to the subway, those little foldable flats like Yosi Samras may be A-OK for you (and maintain your style) … whereas on the mornings or nights when you actually mean to walk for 30-60 minutes over city streets, you make a different choice.
Finally, give some thought to your family history: if your mother and grandmother have/had problem feet (fallen arches, bunions, etc), do not proceed to walk for miles in heels or flip-flops because you’re in your 20s and feel fine… your feet are going to hurt when you’re 30 and you’re going to smack yourself in the head for all that walking you did in your 20s in shoes that weren’t even labeled comfort. Signed, the girl who walked for miles in 3″ Steve Madden shoes when she was in her 20s. (And they weren’t. even. cute. Gaaah.) It doesn’t mean you have to wear sneakers or geriatric sandals — just try to respect your future feet by giving your choice of commuting shoe some thought. For me that would mean any commuting shoe has to have arch support as well as laces/ankle straps because I tend to walk out of flats anyway because I have a wide forefoot and narrow heels — but your issues may be different. (If you know problem feet run in your family it probably isn’t a bad idea to make a visit to a podiatrist anyway and see what she or he recommends!)
Where to look for the best commuting shoes in 2018:
If you have problem feet, go to a specialty shoe store that specializes in comfort shoes. In NYC I’d recommend Tip Top Shoes (on West 72) for a good mix of stylish and comfortable shoes along with knowledgeable salesmen.
If you must do flip-flops for your commute – I’ve walked for miles in these Reef flip flops with arch support (like these); readers have also turned me on to OluKai. Note that this is one of the stupid decisions from my youth that my feet and I regret — but flip flops are so lightweight and comfortable in the moment that even now I walk more places in them than I should.
Over to you, readers — what do you think are the best commuting shoes in 2018? What’s comfortable for long distances? What’s acceptable for the office hallway? What strikes you as a stylish commuting shoe?

Downtown living where space is at a premium is the new norm for many of us. Rather than feeling trapped by these limitations, there are new stylish small space hacks for storage solutions which combine the freedom of clutter removal with the impact of great style.
OTTOMAN EMPIRE Ottomans provide a stylish way to hide a multitude of hoarding sins. They also tuck neatly under a floating shelf or in a corner to be brought out for additional seating when needed.
BENEATH THE BED Under-bed storage bins or boxes are an extremely useful tool given that they are usually not seen by anyone but the homeowner. Seasonal clothes, extra pillows or blankets, can all live comfortably under your bed or sofa until they are needed. Many bins have wheels making it easy to access items when needed.
FOLDING TIME Think practically and fill your small space with double duty pieces. There are many options for furniture that function in more than one way. A drop leaf table can become a console, desk or even dining room table depending on how and where you set it up. Changing accessories based on use is an easy tactic to instantly increase your space. Recognizing a serious demand, many furniture designers are now creating pieces with a fold-out option like desks that start off small and stylish but open to seat up to six guests comfortably.
HOOKED UP Time-tested, sturdy and stylish fold-down metal hooks are must have small space hacks for any homeowner with limited space and no garage. Whether hanging extra chairs until company arrives or affixing your bike to the wall during home hours, hooks are useful and also make your place look like a cool warehouse loft in Brooklyn.

With the arrival of spring, we (hopefully) trade snow showers for rain and our heavy jackets for raincoats. Yes, you’ll soon have to find space in your closet for all your recently purchased puffers. On the bright side, raincoats are no longer those cheap plastic or vinyl pieces you’d toss once sunny summer commenced. Thanks to the resurgence of windbreakers and anoraks, rain gear has gotten decidedly chicer. We’re talking crazy patterns, bold colors and even embroidery. Or you can go the see-through look and let what you’re wearing underneath shine through. While Glastonbury is taking a breather this year, you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to show off your new gear because April showers really do bring May flowers.

Maternity clothing gets such a bad reputation for providing shapeless, trend-less, and overall unflattering selection of clothing for the women who wear them. While this isn’t completely unfounded, we’ve found that more often than not, it’s all about where you shop. To that end, we spoke with maternity shopping destination Tilden about hunting down the perfect denim.
While the retailer does carry maternity denim, “we feel like it’s the only category that doesn’t have a viable workaround come late second and third trimester for moms (we’re working on fixing that!),” the brand says. “While 100% of moms we surveyed expressed varying degrees of dissatisfaction with their maternity wear broadly (ranging from ‘necessary evil’ to ‘wanted to burn it’), over 90% of them reported buying maternity denim by their third trimester, with the majority converting in month five.”
Especially for expecting mothers who approach pregnancy style in less literal ways, denim is continually the one item that proves to be a necessity at some point during the pregnancy. From the coolest boyfriend jeans to trend-forward split-hem pairs, this is our definitive guide to the denim you’ll wear during these special nine months (and possibly after).

Knowing what to do to be more stylish can be a bit elusive. Sometimes you just need to hear tangible advice that can help you reach your full style potential. With the end of the year quickly approaching, we got to thinking about the steps a fashion-loving girl can take to reach her full style potential in the New Year. And while we’re all for advice on what to wear to look more stylish, sometimes it’s helpful to get a little guidance pertaining to what not to wear.
With this in mind, we compiled a constructive list of seven things that can easily be achieved to dress better next season. While it’s most important to wear what you love and feel most confident in, just a few subtle wardrobe tweaks can give your wardrobe a boost that will make your outfits even better, thus improving your confidence and satisfaction with said outfits. From the shoe styles to toss out to the type of skinny jeans to avoid, these are the seven things to give up to be more stylish (and what to swap them for).
Keep scrolling to see them all and shop pieces that will give your wardrobe a major boost.
If you want to stand out, swap your old black coat for something a little more vibrant and interesting. Because in the colder months, your outerwear is sometimes the only way to show the world just how stylish you are.
Sloppy, Ill-Fitting Sweats
With so many stylish athleisure options on the market these days, there’s no reason to rely on your old sweats when you want to be comfortable. Instead, invest in polished activewear-like track pants, leggings, and cropped hoodies.
Still reaching for rubber flip-flops, wedge sneakers, and boots on occasion? It’s time to swap them out for more forward options, like sock boots, kitten-heel mules, backless loafers, and white boots and heels.
Fast-Fashion Pieces Everyone Has
While the draw of a popular item can be hard to resist, do a little legwork and seek out more under-the-radar pieces that express your individuality.
Anything That’s Too Short or Too Tight
Fashion girls have abandoned “sexy” outfits in favor of more modest and even oversize styles. For example, instead of wearing a body-con minidress for a night out, try a silky midi dress or a midi skirt.
Chunky Costume Jewelry
If you love oversize jewelry that makes a statement, opt for pieces that are more sculptural and modern for the most of-the-moment vibe, or stick to delicate layered pieces for something a bit subtler.

“Stylish” might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of vegan footwear, but in 2017, it’s definitely possible to find stylish vegan shoes for the office — in all sorts of styles, from pumps to boots to flats.
Reader L recently asked:
Are there any non-leather, stylish and well-wearing shoes out there? I’m a vegetarian and don’t buy leather, but all the man-made or vegan shoes I buy either don’t wear well (usually not longer than a season) or look like pilgrim shoes. I know there are great companies like Matt & Nat who make amazing bags, but I haven’t been able to find a well-made, vegan pump!
In our last post rounding up brands for the stylish vegan professional, we featured several vegan shoe brands, including Olsenhaus, Matt & Nat, Nicora, and Beyond Skin (along with a few vegan clothing and handbag brands), but to answer Reader L’s question today, we’re expanding on that a bit by featuring several more brands recommended by readers (and by several vegan/vegetarian friends) that are great bets for stylish vegan dress shoes. (We last did a roundup of vegan, non-leather shoes for the professional woman in 2010!) The shoes we’re featuring today are affordable, too — plenty are under $ 100. (By the way, for weekend vegan shoes: Birkenstock recently introduced a vegan collection, some of it for sale at Zappos.) Which are your favorite stylish vegan shoes for the office? What are the brands that you’ve found to wear well and really last?

We’ve featuredRothys a couple of times, most recently The Point, which is one of their two styles — the other is The Flat. Rothys details their mission on their website: to create a shoe “with the ease of a sneaker but with the polish of a feminine flat … with low-waste, low-impact materials, hand-assembled for high quality and durability.” The shoes are lightweight, made from recycled materials (as well as recyclable), machine washable (!), and moisture-wicking, and the knit they’re made from is “blister-free.” The Point ($ 145) and The Flat ($ 125) are available in sizes 5–12, and the site offers free shipping and free returns.
Neuaura, founded in 2007 by a lifelong vegetarian, makes animal-free, eco-friendly boots, flats, heels, and wedges. A portion of the proceeds from one of its factories (a sustainable operation in Southern Brazil that’s run with hydroelectric power) is donated to environmental charities, and on average, 68% of the factory’s waste is reused. Neuaura offers free shipping on all U.S. orders.
Based in London and founded in 2013, Will’s Vegan Shoes & Accessories Co. sells vegan and ethically made shoes, both for women and men. On their site you’ll find flats, sandals, boots, pumps, and more, in regular, narrow, and wide widths. Sizes available are 5–11. Bonus: They offer free shipping and 365-day returns on all U.S. orders. They also make accessories — belts, wallets, briefcases, satchels, totes, and more.
Founded in 2010, Jambu & Co. makes three brands, Jambu (“premium looks”), JBU (“trendy”), and JSport “sporty, casual”). As you can tell from the names, not everything made by the company is appropriate for work — most of the shoes are best for a casual or possibly business casual office, or for casual Fridays — but they’re definitely worth checking out. The shoes’ features include a contoured memory foam footbed; waterproof, water-resistant, and “water ready” classifications; and a non-marking, partially recycled rubber outsole. Some, but not all, of their offerings are vegan, and the size range is 6–11. As for production, the website makes this claim: production (in China) is “closely supervised” and the operations have “strict standards that are monitored.”
Where do you look for stylish vegan shoes for the office? Did you know that you can search both Nordstrom and Zappos for vegan shoes?
Confession: Until a few months ago, I pretty much exclusively hauled around my MacBook Pro in those free canvas totes you pick up at events. Stylish laptop bags they were not, but after switching to a 15-inch screen, I suddenly found that all my “real” bags were simply too small. Fortunately, I came to my senses and realized that I carry that thing around often enough to justify a proper leather version.
Finally, I can fit all my stuff in one bag rather than constantly schlepping three around with me—and as an added bonus, my laptop feels more secure, and I feel like I have my sh*t together (well, most of the time).
Below, we’ve rounded up 17 work bags and backpacks with enough space to carry your laptop (just check the dimensions to make sure yours will fit).
Gone are the days when monograms were just for the sorority set. The fashion world (and everyone else) has officially embraced them, and it’s not out of the ordinary to see one’s name on anything from a pair of sneakers to a suitcase. As the old saying goes, it truly is the thought that counts when it comes to gift-giving, but why not give something thoughtful and stylish and useful? Enter monogrammed gifts. It’s nearly impossible not to give a little squeal of delight upon opening a gift and seeing that not only is it a really good one, but it has your name on it too.
Among the most covetable monogrammed gift ideas for this holiday season are a cozy varsity sweater from Rails, cool skinny jeans with a number of placement options for the monogram, and a timeless pendant necklace that any French girl would approve of.

Planning to update your home but not sure where to start? Our design contributors have put together 6 inspirational ideas for your exterior makeover!
Designer: Jamie Banfield >>
I chose a palette of earthy tones with a deep, rich accent color for a modern twist on a traditional color scheme. Pair this with the earthy tones of the stone veneer from the Dry-Stack collection in Charcoal for the perfect nature-inspired look. For the perfect finishing touch, add an outdoor chandelier that blends modern style with vintage touches.
I started with a stone veneer from the Great Lakes collection in the color Fawn. It’s a great neutral that goes with any color and the pattern reads both traditional and modern. I’ve paired it with a deep, smokey, gray-brown color. It’s a great go-to color for exterior surfaces, like garage doors, because it blends in with the stone. To finish, I chose light sconces with an elegant shape that adds sophistication.
I love a great blue on a house either as the siding, on the shutters or as the trim around the windows. A rustic orange on the front door is always a show stopper too. Mixed with a stone veneer from the Dry-Stack collection in the color Charcoal and a classic retro black light for a winning combo.
Stone Veneer: Dry Stack in Charcoal, Fusion Stone
Colors: Citadel Blue CC049-0, True North Strong CC100-3, India Trade CC010-4, Beauti-tone
Lighting: Outdoor Lantern by Feiss, Living Lighting

The combination of two blue colors is timeless and beautiful. I would add an orange door for a fun pop of color. To balance the blues, I chose a stone veneer from the Great Lakes collection in the color Brindle which adds sophistication to this look. To finish, a light fixture that is functional yet stylish with a casual, elegant look is perfect.
My inspiration started with the stone veneer from the Great Lakes collection in the color Raven which looks contemporary. I then selected a darker paint color for the remaining part of the exterior to balance the stone texture and give it a dramatic look. I rounded out the palette with a lighter tone for the windows and door trim and a pop of color for the front door. Finally, the light fixtures are a hint of traditional with a classic but timeless look.
I think that a tonal gray paint palette is beautiful, timeless and a great choice for exteriors. I chose a stone veneer from the Dry-Stack collection in the color Charcoal which works well with the grays and adds modern sophistication to a home. An outdoor pendant that is both functional and stylish, helps to bring this look together.

When it comes to building her wardrobe, Aï Bihr certainly has a lot of options. As Steven Alan’s creative director, Bihr has a whole store’s worth of goodies right at her fingertips — and is in the enviable position of being able to actually create exactly the kind of garment she’d like to wear. And if that wasn’t enough to make you wish you were in her shoes, Bihr speaks multiple languages, has lived in Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York, holds degrees in both neuroscience and pattern-making. Here, she gives us the scoop on what she wears to work.
On a work day, I try to wear mostly Steven Alan because it’s good for me to wear what we’ve made; if we need to improve something or if something’s not working great, then I know it. I love to wear a big Steven Alan shirt — I usually get something a bit oversize. So I’ll wear a men’s extra-large reverse seam in white, with a pair of jeans we’ve made. I also have a lot of old Levi’s because I collect a lot of denim. I love a 501, but I like to buy a big men’s size and then cut the legs so they’re kind of wide and cropped. I go to a lot of vintage stores to hunt for them; when I lived in Paris I went every weekend to look at the flea markets. I’m also a big vintage eyewear collector and have really loved designing the Steven Alan Optical collection.

On my feet, I usually have sneakers or oxfords. Or like, a penny loafer. My whole team knows I’m addicted to these Japanese high tops called Shoes Like Pottery. I wear them constantly, year round. I don’t want to be boring, but I always look the same! Even if there’s a corporate event or I have to make a presentation, I always look the same. I try to stay very consistent and have been very consistent for a long time. I’ve always worn a lot of jumpsuits–whatever brand I go to, I make jumpsuits for them. They’re kind of great because they’re so versatile. You can even tie the sleeves at the waist and they make really great pants that way. I have a nice collection of vintage jumpsuits, some from the Yves Saint Laurent Safari collection, and I’ll wear those tied at the waist or zip them up and belt them. And if I’m wearing a jumpsuit like that I might add a little heeled sandal. Maryam Nassir Zadeh makes beautiful shoes. If I do go to a party and I feel like wearing something a little bit different I’ll put on sandals from Maryam. One of my best friends, Mona, designs A Détacher and she makes really beautiful skirts and dresses. I recently bought an indigo skirt/culotte thing from her. It’s the perfect length and so good for summer parties.

Dress for the Seasons
When the weather is this hot and humid, I love to wear linen and cotton poplin. We have these really great cotton poplin wide trousers from Steven Alan called the Picnic Pant. When you wear a wide-leg trouser like that, it’s nice to wear something small on top. You can’t wear something too big, or else you look like a tent. It’s also a great pant to wear with a linen T-shirt.

In the fall, I’m usually in a suit. I’ll wear a suit jacket and a pair of trousers, with a T-shirt and sneakers. I have a few different jacket styles that I really like–one is a schoolboy that’s a bit smaller; The Row makes a really nice one every year. And then I like a boyfriend notched lapel in tropical wool; it’s actually the first jacket I made for Steven Alan when I joined the company and it’s still my go-to. I also always love to have a peak lapel double-breasted blazer. I think the key to pulling off a suit is–well, first of all you just really have to find the right suit for you. But then you also have to have a more casual element in your accessories or what you’re wearing the suit with, like a T-shirt and sneakers.

When I’m shopping for myself, I always look at the finishing of the garment. I’m looking on the inside, not just the outside, examining the fabric, rubbing it on my neck and doing all the crazy things that designers do. You want to make sure there’s a clean finish–basically, that you don’t see all this thread wrapped around the seam–so that it doesn’t look like things are going to snag. It’s good to pay attention to these kinds of things, because they’re going to dictate the longevity of the garment. And really touch the fabric. Customers aren’t stupid, they know when they’re feeling good fabric. This is why we choose to use really good fabric at Steven Alan, because our customers are smart. They know they’re not getting garbage from us. That’s one thing I’m really proud of: There’s no room for poor quality. I’m really proud to say that more than 90 percent of the things I make are made in New York. And if it’s not made here, it’s made at the best factory in Japan.

Suede suits. Lace dresses. Faux leather jackets. Old school tennis shoes. I can never keep track of what is trendy now, what used to be trendy, and furthermore, what should I spend my cash on. Just when I think I have it figured out, the silly trend changes again.
I live in Los Angeles, and yes, I fall prey to the overwhelming desire to stay stylish. Come on now, I know I’m not the only one out there who has labored in front of my closet trying to find the “perfect” combination to stay trendy, and to look, well, fantastically awesome. Let’s face it, trendy costs money… big bucks if you’re trying to keep up with the Joneses. As with everything, I argue there is a better way to stay stylish without going bankrupt.
You Look Marvelous Darling…
I sat down with celebrity stylist, Inanna Bantu, who is a part of the styling team Afropeaux and asked her how to solve this seemingly unsolvable crisis. Inanna is a style maven who has styled so many A-list stars including Tom Cruise, Betty White and Matthew Perry to name a few. She has an air about her that is infectious and makes me want to scream, “Please, come and make me marvelous!”
Shannah: Inanna, you’ve styled so many celebrities for movies, TV and print adds. Can you give me a list of your top five items that men and women should have as staple items in their wardrobe, on a non-celebrity budget?
Inanna: Yes, this is a great question. Just like building a financial foundation, having signature or staple pieces will pay you back time and time again because you can mix and match and really create your own style. Here is what I suggest:
Men: Slim-fitting white dress shirt
Lapel accessories for blazers
Brown Monkstrap shoes
Blue Blazer, NOT navy
Women: A unique little black dress
Variety of scarves from neutral to vibrant
Shannah: Great, I’m a personal fan of men’s white dress shirts. Something very timeless and classy about a man in a white shirt. Ok, so I’ve got $ 500 to spent this spring on additions to my closet. Where do I go and what am I looking for?
Inanna: Oh, good question. You can do a lot with $ 500, even less. For men and women, hit the clearance sections at Zara, H&M and discount retailers like Nordstrom Rack. I would buy statement pieces — off-the-rack clothes that fit your body well and allow you to be well-dressed.

Shannah: Love it! I am a huge fan of Zara, but particularly like the Zara’s overseas. I think their buyers have a different knack at finding new trends. Let’s talk about how being properly styled can help you get a better job, bigger salary and get ahead. Do you have any examples of how being properly styled can result in a bigger bank account?
Inanna: I see this all the time. In fact, a high-profile client of mine needed an image makeover and we spent time recreating her look — by the time she hit the red carpet, she ended up booking a major film role due to her new look. So yes, ladies and gents, image IS everything in Hollywood… and your job market.
Shannah: Lastly, and honestly, who wouldn’t want to hire a stylist to go through their closet? I’ve always wanted someone to come in and magically wave a wand and totally change my style with the clothes I have. I’ve always heard that hiring a stylist is something that only A-listers can afford. Am I wrong?
Inanna: Yes, stylists have typically been considered a luxury; however, personal styling can be affordable, depending on your needs and wants. Often, a personal stylist charges by the hour with a minimum. This rate can vary per client. With my personal clients, I offer everything from closet overhauls, to shopping new looks to creating their signature style… even on a budget.
Shannah: I love it. So in a nutshell, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to update your look once you have your staple pieces. This can be done with a small investment and you can keep building from there. What I love even more is the importance of styling yourself even when you can’t afford to hire a stylist, because at the end of the day, being put together well leads to more money in the bank. It really is that simple.
Inanna: I couldn’t have said it better. Work with the money you have, build a piece at a time, and always leave the house believing you are red-carpet ready. Style – The Huffington Post
