Florida Mom Missing Since Mother’s Day Is Presumed Dead — and a Suspect Is Arrested in the Case

Florida police have arrested a woman in connection with the disappearance of a mom-of-three who didn’t pick up her children on Mother’s Day and hasn’t been seen since.

At a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said investigators arrested 50-year-old Kimberly Kessler — who authorities allege was the last person to see 34-year-old Joleen Jensen Cummings alive, according to local TV station WJXT.

Kessler, a co-worker at Tangles Hair Salon with Cummings, is charged with grand theft auto, First Coast News reports. She is also a suspect in Cummings’ disappearance, authorities said Tuesday.

She is being held in lieu of $ 500,000 bond.

Leeper said investigators have evidence to suggest that Cummings is dead but would not release it at this time.

Cummings was last seen leaving her job at Tangles in Fernandina Beach at 5 p.m. on May 12. She was supposed to meet up with her ex-husband in Hilliard on Mother’s Day to pick up her kids but she never showed up. Her mother, Anne Johnson, reported her missing on May 14.

Her beige 2006 Ford Expedition was discovered May 15 in the parking lot of a Home Depot near the salon in Yulee.

That same day, police went to the salon to speak with Kessler, but she didn’t show up to work from that point forward — and the address she had given to her boss was fake, police allege.

Later, investigators discovered surveillance video from 1:17 a.m. on May 13 that showed Kessler, who worked at the salon that day and had been employed there for about one month, parking Cummings’ SUV.

Police found Kessler, who went by the alias Jennifer Sybert, at a truck stop on May 16, First Coast News reports.

Police said Kessler is from Pennsylvania and had been using a fake social security number.

On Sunday, Cummings’ mother Anne Johnson posted an emotional message to Facebook about her missing daughter. “When parents shed tears about their children, I believe with all my heart that God hears those prayers of lament, and all of us can agree that when our kids hurt and go through difficulties that we as a parent shed tears,”

“Today is the 7th day we are without my daughter,” she continued. “Today is 7 days her children are without their mother. Today is 7 days that her brother and sister are without their sister. Today is 7 days that her close friends are without their friend. Let’s bring Joleen home!”

It was not immediately clear if Kessler has retained an attorney.

Caller told FBI Florida shooting suspect ‘going to explode’

WASHINGTON (AP) — A woman close to the man charged with killing 17 people at a Florida high school warned the FBI in chilling detail that he had a growing collection of guns and a temper so uncontrollable she worried about him “getting into a school and just shooting the place up.”

FBI Says It Failed To Investigate Tip On Florida Suspect

PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) — The FBI received a specific report last month that the suspect in the Florida school shooting had a “desire to kill” and access to guns and could be plotting an attack, but agents failed to investigate the tip, the agency said Friday.

A person who was close to Nikolas Cruz called the FBI’s tip line on Jan. 5 and provided information about Cruz’s weapons and his erratic behavior, including his disturbing social media posts. The caller was concerned that Cruz could attack a school.

In a statement issued Friday, the agency acknowledged that the tip should have been shared with the FBI’s Miami office and investigated, but it was not. The startling admission came as the agency was already facing criticism for its treatment of a tip about a YouTube comment posted by a “Nikolas Cruz” last year.

The FBI investigated the comment, which said “Im going to be a professional school shooter,” but did not determine who made it.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said the agency was still reviewing its missteps on the January tip. He said he was “committed to getting to the bottom of what happened,” as well as assessing the way the FBI responds to information from the public.

“We have spoken with victims and families and deeply regret the additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy,” Wray said in the statement.

Cruz has been charged with killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, north of Miami.

Also Friday, mourners gathered for the first funeral for a shooting victim, packing the Star of David chapel to remember 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff. From outside the chapel, other mourners strained to hear the voices chanting Jewish prayers and remembering the star soccer player as having “the strongest personality.” She was also remembered as a creative writer with a memorable smile.

A day earlier, details of Wednesday’s attack began to emerge, showing how the assailant moved through the school in just minutes before escaping with the same students he had targeted.

Cruz jumped out of an Uber car and walked toward building 12 of the school, carrying a black duffel bag and a black backpack. A man inside spotted Cruz and knew he was a former student, a troubled kid.

He radioed a co-worker and within a minute heard gunshots.

The 19-year-old was wearing a maroon shirt, black pants and a black hat. The man, whose name was blacked out from a sheriff’s affidavit, told detectives Cruz was moving “purposefully.”

Cruz slipped into the building, entered a stairwell and extracted a rifle from his bag, authorities said. He shot into four rooms on the first floor — going back to spray bullets into two of the rooms a second time — then went upstairs and shot a single victim on the second floor.

He ran to the third floor, where according to a timeline released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, three minutes passed before he dropped the rifle and backpack, ran back down the stairs and quickly blended in with panicked, fleeing students.

Florida State Sen. Bill Galvano, who visited the third floor, said authorities told him it appeared that Cruz tried to fire point-blank out the third-floor windows at students as they were leaving the school, but the high-impact windows did not shatter. Police told Galvano that it was not that difficult to open the windows.

“Thank God he didn’t,” Galvano said.

From the time Cruz entered the building until the time he left, only six minutes passed. During that brief time, he shot more than two dozen people, including 17 fatally.

After the rampage, he walked to a Wal-Mart and bought a drink at a Subway restaurant, then went to a McDonald’s.

About 40 minutes later, a deputy saw him walking down a suburban South Florida street and grabbed him. He didn’t put up a fight.

Among the dead: assistant football coach Aaron Feis, slain while shielding students from bullets; Joaquin Oliver, a student known for his unique look and who once dyed his hair bleach-blonde with tiger stripes; Alyssa Alhadeff, an avid soccer player and student; and 35-year-old geography teacher Scott Beigel, who helped students enter a locked classroom, only to be shot himself.

Among at least 1,000 people attending a candlelight vigil near the school Thursday night, some openly sobbed as the victims’ names were read aloud. At one point, people began chanting, “No more guns! No more guns!”

Dressed in the school’s red color, some held flowers while others wielded signs asking for action to fight school violence, including gun control.

“Kids don’t need guns. No guns under 21,” read one sign.

Ernest Rospierski, a teacher at the school, took several bracing breaths at the vigil as he talked to a reporter about the horror in the halls.

“Bang, bang, bang — all of a sudden the shooting stopped,” he said. “I looked down. He was reloading. I yelled run. And then I ran behind as many kids as I could.”

Authorities have not described any specific motive, except to say that Cruz had been kicked out of the high school, which has about 3,000 students and serves an affluent suburb where the median home price is nearly $ 600,000. Students who knew him described a volatile teenager whose strange behavior had caused others to end friendships.

Cruz was ordered held without bond Thursday at a brief court hearing. He wore an orange jumpsuit with his hands cuffed at his waist. His public defender did not contest the order and had her arm around Cruz during the short appearance. Afterward, she called him a “broken human being.”

Wednesday’s shooting was the 17th incident of gunfire at a U.S. school this year. Of these, one involved a suicide, two involved active shooters who killed students, two involved people killed in arguments and three involved people who were shot but survived. Nine involved no injuries at all.

Florida School Shooting Suspect Reported To Be White Nationalist

The alleged Florida gunman accused of killing 17 people at a high school Wednesday afternoon in one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history, wasn’t just reportedly suffering from mental illness—he’s also a white nationalist.

The Man Behind the Gun

Nikolas Cruz, 19, created chaos and frenzy at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, when he pulled a fire alarm and then opened fire into a flood of panicked teens. News reports reveal that Cruz suffered from depression and had been expelled from the school last year after getting into a fight. The suspect had also posted disturbing comments on social media using derogatory slurs directed at blacks and Muslims as well as expressing desires to become a “professional school shooter.”

Still, despite his alarming obsession with firearms and murder, he had unrestricted access to guns. On the day of the shooting rampage, he was armed with an AR-15 and several magazines.

President Donald Trump responded to the mass shooting Thursday morning in a tweet calling Cruz “mentally disturbed” and urging Americans to contact authorities about people who pose a threat of danger. Trump echoed that sentiment during a press conference where he vowed to “tackle the difficult issue of mental health.” However, by framing the mass shooting as merely a mental health issue, the president has failed to acknowledge two overarching factors in this tragedy: lax gun laws and the resurgence of white nationalist violence in America.

The Rise of White Hate Groups

Cruz was more than just a troubled teen. According to ABC News, he’s a member of a white supremacist group called the Republic of Florida, a self-described “white civil rights organization fighting for white identitarian politics” and aiming to create a “white ethnostate.” In 2017, Florida residents complained about the group’s growing presence in fear that it would lead to violence. “I really feel like they’re not any different from a terrorist group in the Middle East or anywhere else—or even just like a gang,” said Jay Godin, a Tallahassee resident, to ABC News affiliate WTXL.

Jordan Jereb, the leader of the Republic of Florida, confirmed that Cruz had participated in the group’s armed combat training, but denied that the organization had any dealings in the massacre. “He acted on his own behalf of what he just did and he’s solely responsible for what he just did,” said Jereb.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist groups, listed the Republic of Florida as part of its “Hatewatch” in 2015. Although there is no clear motive behind Cruz’s massacre, it’s worth noting that the group’s resurgence coincides with the rise of the Alt-Right, a notorious movement that includes white supremacists and Trump loyalists. Over the last four years, 43 people have died at the hands of white supremacists while dozens more have been injured. Trump, however, has yet to denounce the acts of violence committed by the Alt-Right. Instead, he called the white nationalists who participated in a deadly rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, back in August “very fine people.”

Idol Winner Fantasia Barrino’s Nephew Killed in Shooting, Suspect Charged with First-Degree Murder

American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino‘s nephew was killed in a shooting Tuesday in North Carolina.

Tyquan Von Ricco Washington was found with multiple gunshot wounds on the road in front of a home in Greensboro, N.C., according to the Greensboro Police Department.

While paramedics tried to save Washington, the 18-year-old was pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital.

Police allege the teen was shot during a dispute between himself and 21-year-old David Lee White, Jr.

Hours after Washington’s death, White was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and is being held in the Guilford County Jail without bond, according to police.

The American Idol season 3 winner shared a photo of her nephew on Instagram shortly after the news, writing, “Ty 😢 Auntie is So Sorry Baby 💔 RIP to my Oldest Nephew Please Pray for his Mother and my Brother @riccobarrino & his Stepdad.”

Washington’s father, Ricco Barrino, a recording artist, wrote an emotional letter to his late son on Instagram, reflecting on the special moments he witnessed as his son grew up.

“Dear son I needed to write this sooner but it’s funny how life make you aware of your own unconscious procrastinations. I wanted you to know that from the depths of my heart your daddy loves you and he always has,” Barrino wrote.

“I remember holding you for the first time that’s when I knew that I had to do something other than work in somebody’s factory so that one day you could look up to me,” he continued. “As I write this letter with tears streaming down my face I want you to know that I showed you tough love because I knew you were something special.”

“I never forget the first time that me and your mother took you to gymnastics for tryouts. I remember the lady walking over to us and telling us that we would have to wait behind a long list of other kids lol I guess she didn’t know what my kid was capable of because when she turned around she spotted you turning somersaults as if you were in the US Olympics,” Barrino, whose real name is Kassim Vonricco Washington, added.

Barrino continued, “I knew you were special when all the older kids wanted to hang with you. I knew you were leader at that moment and All the way up to your first big 18th birthday.”

The musician wrote about feeling proud of his son on his birthday and “telling everybody in the studio that my son is finally becoming a man.”

“I wanted to be there every day for you and there wasn’t a day that went by I didn’t wonder where you were,” he wrote. “Well on this day you became a bigger man when you put on a pair of wings and did what I have yet to do. Trump: Suspect in NYC Attack ‘Should Get Death Penalty’

President Trump on Wednesday night called for Sayfullo Saipov, the suspect in the New York truck attack, to get the death penalty. “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. The president’s comments came after Saipov made his first court appearance late Wednesday after being hit with federal terrorism charges for Tuesday’s attack. He is alleged to have intentionally mowed down pedestrians in an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack that prosecutors say he planned for a year.

Four Young Pennsylvania Men Missing Since Last Week; Authorities Suspect Foul Play

Pennsylvania authorities are searching for four young men who went missing in the past week.

Jimi Tar Patrick, 19, vanished last Wednesday. Two days later, Mark Sturgis, 22, Tom Meo, 21, and Dean Finocchiaro, 18, all vanished.

In a press conference on Monday afternoon, Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub was asked if he believed foul play was involved. “I sure believe there is,” he replied, adding that authorities are treating the case “as a criminal investigation at this time.”

At least five municipal police departments, the Bucks County Sheriff, Pennsylvania State Police and the FBI are involved in searching multiple locations for any trace of the men. “It’s all hands on deck,” Weintraub told reporters. “The investigation is very serious and very sensitive.”

Investigators are focused on a large farm near where the men were last seen. They have taken the farm owner’s 20-year-old son into custody on an unrelated firearms charge. He is being questioned by police.

Meanwhile, cops are trying to determine how the men knew each other.  Sturgis and Meo are longtime friends who work in construction for Sturgis’ father. Finocchiaro is a mutual friend of theirs. It’s unclear whether Patrick knows any or all of the men.

Police have brought in heavy equipment to search the 68-acre farm, including a backhoe. Weintraub says that the search could go on for days. “It’s like finding needles in a haystack,” he said at the news conference. “We’re not exactly sure what we’re going to find there.”

While police continue their search, the men’s families are praying for their safety — and are trying to keep a positive attitude. “At this point, as the hours pass, it seems more and more grim,” Sturgis’ father, Mark Potash, told Philly.com. “It is very difficult. I really don’t know how I’m going to make it through the rest of the day. I’m going minute by minute right now.”

Anyone with information about the men’s whereabouts is asked to call the investigation’s tip line at (215) 297-8201.
