Margot Robbie has opened up about the Harley Quinn spin-off movie she’s producing in which she’ll also star. The film, called Birds of Prey, will be directed by indie filmmaker Cathy Yan and is set to be an R-rated “girl gang” movie.
FANDOM chatted with Robbie ahead of the release of her latest film, Terminal, and asked her who she’d like in Harley’s girl gang.
While she stopped short of naming specific characters, she said: “I will say that there are a lot of unexplored DC female characters who are unique and complicated and dark and funny and exciting — and not just for their superpowers. Actually, the ones that excite me most don’t have superpowers at all but they have, you know, pretty great backstories and all could kind of live in the world with Harley and create this cool dynamic. Because I don’t think girl groups… I mean all my girlfriends, we’re a huge girl gang and we’re not all the same person, everyone’s very different. I guess I was really trying to put that on screen — the way we exist in everyday life as a big girl gang. Why can’t we watch that in films more?”
Robbie followed up by suggesting she’d love it if her friends could actually be in the movie – if only they were actors.
“The women who inspire me most, honestly, are my friends and they’re not actors,” she said. “I mean, I have friends who are actors but most of my closest friends aren’t really in the industry.”
Who Could She Be Talking About?
So, no clues on casting but there’s plenty in Robbie’s words to set us off guessing which DC characters might be joining Harley Quinn as one of the ‘Birds of Prey’. At the very least, it allows us to discount (probably) the likes of the frequently explored Catwoman and Poison Ivy – the two other ‘Gotham City Sirens’ who, next to Quinn, make up the trio of female villains slated to feature in their own standalone movie, which may or may not still be happening. Unpowered comic book ‘Birds of Prey’ characters include Batgirl and Batwoman as well as Huntress and martial arts maestro Jade Canary.
In May, Robbie revealed that she wasn’t involved with any other Harley Quinn projects. She told Moviefone: “I want to make a girl gang, R-rated film that Harley is a part of. And we started working on it from there. Meanwhile, over the course of the next few years, the studio was exploring other Harley Quinn spin-offs. But I was not a part of those versions, I was always focused on this one with Christina… I know that they were exploring ‘Gotham City Sirens’ with David Ayer, and I know they were exploring a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and they were exploring doing I don’t know what else. I wasn’t a part of those. I was focusing on this. I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.”
Terminal is released to UK Cinemas on July 6 and will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital from August 6. The film is out now in the US.
