A Little Bird Tells US… Artist Lucy Sparrow’s set up shop in Downtown LA

The fully felt Sparrow Mart is home to 31,000 individual works, and they’re all for sale.

Sparrow Mart

Her first pop-up was a Corner Shop in London’s East End, stocked with familiar products made from felt and funded by a Kickstarter campaign but, since that initial installation, artist Lucy Sparrow’s projects have just got bigger and better. And as nowhere is more familiar with large-scale consumerism than America, that’s where she’s been setting her sights.

Having sold out her 8 Till Late bodega in New York in record time – it shut a week earlier than it was due to, as the store cupboard was quite literally bare – Sparrow has spent the past year stitching 31,000 (yes, you read that number correctly) individual pieces to sell in a new pop-up shop. This time, she’s set up Sparrow Mart, a 1980s-themed (in)stall(ation) at the Standard Hotel in Downtown LA, and the locals are going mad for it.

One of our artrepublic family of artists, Sparrow is known for her felt sculptures that depict everything from bathroom cabinets to sushi sets, domestic cleaning products to famous sweet treats. Sparrow Mart pulls together the themes from her smaller-scale works, to stock an entire store – from the vegetable aisle and deli meat counter to packaged convenience foods and even an ATM. Everything is for sale, with items priced from $ 5 upwards, making it affordable as well as experiential art. Even street artist Shepard Fairey, aka Obey, couldn’t resist stopping by to take a spin round the aisles.

If you’re not in LA and can’t make it to Sparrow Mart (which is open throughout August from 11am – 9pm daily, but closed on Mondays), why not drop into our Brighton gallery to see some of Sparrow’s other sculptural work. We have two of her editioned Cabinet series on display; the bathroom-based ‘His N Hers’, as well as ‘Such A Sad Time’, whose shelves are lined with familiar processed foods (all made out of felt, of course). The innocent-looking soft sculptures are almost guaranteed to make you rethink the way you consume (and potentially hoard) goods.

Outside the States right now, and beyond the realms of the LA supermarket sweep, artrepublic Brighton is one of the few places you can stock up on Sparrow’s editioned pieces. Find out more by calling us or visiting the gallery to speak to one of our Art Advisors.

To view our  Lucy Sparrow felt art, call into our Brighton gallery, where our Art Advisors will be happy to help. Tel. 01273 724829 or email brighton@artrepublic.com.

Omarosa Tells NPR She Heard Trump ‘N-Word Tape,’ Contradicting Her Own Tell-All Book

Omarosa’s book isn’t even on shelves yet and she’s already out here contradicting herself.

In an interview with NPR, Omarosa claimed she heard — with her own ears — Donald Trump use the N-word on the set of ‘The Apprentice.’

In her book, Unhinged, she says the opposite.

via NPR:

“Hearing it changed everything for me,” former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman told NPR on Friday.

Manigault Newman was referring to what she calls the “N-word tape” — a long-rumored but never surfaced tape of Donald Trump on the set of The Apprentice allegedly using the racial slur.

In her interview with NPR’s Rachel Martin, Manigault Newman claims to have heard the tape and heard Trump using that slur on the tape.

But that’s not what it says in her tell-all book, Unhinged, due out on Tuesday.

When asked by Martin about the discrepancy during the interview, Manigault Newman insisted Martin must not have read the book (she had) and pointed to a section at the very end of it.

But in that section, Manigault Newman doesn’t actually describe hearing the tape. She writes of calling one of her “sources” who had a lead on the “N-word tape.”

“Incredibly, this person – who shall remain nameless – picked up the phone.

We spoke.

On this phone conversation, I was told exactly what Donald Trump said – yes, the N-word and others in a classic Trump-goes-nuclear rant – and when he’d said them.

During production he was miked, and there is definitely an audio track.

For over a year I’d been so afraid of hearing the specifics from someone who’d been in the room. Hearing the truth freed me from that fear. And only now that it’s gone, do I realize just how heavy it’s been.”

During the interview with Martin, Manigault Newman read the section aloud, then insisted it described her hearing the tape rather than what the words on the page state, which is that she heard an account of what was on the tape. “I heard the tape,” she said when pressed.

Her search for the N-word tape is a core piece of the narrative Manigault Newman weaves in Unhinged, a memoir that covers her time on the reality TV program The Apprentice that starred the future president, then the 2016 Trump campaign and the White House. This discrepancy in her account of hearing the tape may cast doubt on other claims in the book, many of which are explosive.

In Unhinged, Manigault Newman writes as both a Trump world insider, overjoyed at his election, and as a voice of the liberal resistance airing concerns about his rhetoric, policies and mental state.

At this point someone needs to get their hands on those tapes and release them. We doubt it’ll change anything, but at least we’ll know the truth.

President Trump Tells Tonight Show Host Jimmy Fallon to ‘Be a Man’ Over Hair-Mussing Episode

(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump is telling Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon to “be a man” and stop “whimpering” about the personal anguish he felt over the backlash he received after messing up Trump’s hair during a 2016 campaign appearance on Fallon’s late-night talk show.

Fallon recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he “made a mistake” on the Sept. 15, 2016, episode and would do it differently.

The comments didn’t appear to sit well with Trump.

The president tweeted Sunday: “.@jimmyfallon is now whimpering to all that he did the famous “hair show” with me (where he seriously messed up my hair), & that he would have now done it differently because it is said to have “humanized” me-he is taking heat. He called & said “monster ratings.” Be a man Jimmy!”

Say What Now? Former Trump Campaign Manager Tells Black Fox News Panelist He’s Out of His ‘Cotton-Picking Mind’ [Video]

David Bossie, a former deputy campaign manager for Donald Trump, told a Black Fox News guest he was out of his “cotton-picking mind” in the middle of a debate on rhetoric surrounding the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

via NYDN:

Bossie hurled the phrase — bringing to mind the work of slaves in the old South — at Democratic strategist Joel Payne on “Fox & Friends” Sunday morning after the two spoke about former CIA director Michael Hayden sharing a photo of Auschwitz on Twitter.

“Michael Hayden posted a picture of Auschwitz,” Bossie said, to which Payne replied, “Yeah, that liberal Michael Hayden, that screaming liberal Michael Hayden.”

Bossie then responded, “Look, you’re out of your cotton-picking mind.”

Payne was quick to reply: “Cotton-picking mind? Brother, let me tell you something. I got some relatives who picked cotton. And I’m not going to allow you to attack me like that on TV.”

Bossie responded with an incredulous, “Attack you how?” and continued to declare Payne “out of (his) mind.”

Ed Henry, a Fox News host and the discussion’s moderator, issued a statement once the show returned from a commercial break and said that while he wasn’t sure what Bossie meant by the phrase, it “clearly offended” Payne and others.

“I want to make sure that Fox News and this show, myself, we don’t agree with that particular phrase,” he said. “It was obviously offensive and these debates get fiery, that’s unfortunate. We like to have honest and spirited debates, but not phrases like that, obviously. And so I will just leave it at that.”

What is this world coming to?

Stephen King Tells Colbert Why Trump Blocked Him on Twitter

Scott Kowalchyk/CBS

“The last time I was here, I had a president who had just given me a National Medal of the Arts,” Stephen King said when he sat down on The Late Show couch Wednesday night. “Now we’ve got a president who blocked me on Twitter.”

King, whose newest novel is called The Outsider, just happened to be visiting Stephen Colbert on the same day a federal judge ruled that it’s unconstitutional for the president of the United States to block users from seeing his tweets. “So my question is: do I really want to follow that guy?” the author asked. “I don’t think so.”

“What did you do to that good man that hurt his feelings so much that he felt the only way to defend himself from your harsh and hurtful words was to block you on Twitter?” Colbert asked.

Black-ish’s Real Life ‘Bow’ Tells Her Story, Her Way

Fans of ABC’s Black-ish had a group meltdown on Twitter the other night during an episode titled, “Blue Valentime,” in which the show’s endearing main characters, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross), confronted a marital split.

“Nope….nope….as a child of divorce, I am not about to have Dre and Bow break up our family a week after Cosby is convicted and the same day Kanye is saying slavery was a choice,” tweeted Brittani Jaccaro, aka Binge Watch Bestie.

Perhaps fans take the show so personally because they know that Dre and Bow and their brood of five children sprung less from the imagination of show creator Kenya Barris than they did from his actual life.

Award-winning writer Barris has six children with his wife of almost 20 years. Like the character Ellis Ross plays, she is a physician who works hard, laughs easily, and doesn’t ever take herself too seriously. She also happens to be smart, loving, opinionated, bi-racial, and is nicknamed Bow, for Rainbow—just like her counterpart on TV.

(Rainbow Barris)

She met Kenya in high school, although they didn’t start dating right away. And while the couple is living large now (not merely because of the size of their brood, ages 18 to 1), they each worked long and hard for their success.

In fact, Dr. Barris, the middle of five children in a blended family, was the first in her family to attend college. Although she was gifted in science and math, she had few professional role models and no thought of being a physician until a professor suggested it at the end of her sophomore year.

“I didn’t have a vision,” she says, looking back on her and Kenya’s early years of struggle. “I had a lot of nights of tears, and times when I wanted to give up. People think things happen overnight and you’re so driven. I just knew I had to keep going because there was nothing to fall back on.”

While her husband spent the last four seasons presenting his celebrated fictional version of their family life on TV, Dr. Barris quietly decided to pen her own version of the real thing. Drawn from notes she began recording on their family life several years before the show was even a thought, her new book, “Keeping Up With the Johnsons: Bow’s Guide to Black-ish Parenting,” is being released on May 8.

(Rainbow Barris)

In an interview hours before last night’s unsettling episode aired, she made it clear that her and Kenya’s real-life marriage is on solid ground, and she’s pleased to finally be having her own say.

What’s the difference between your telling of your family’s story and Kenya’s?

Mine is the truth and it’s right! [she laughs] Black-ish tells so much of our life, but it’s told from a male perspective. The situations are the same, but the narrator really does control how that situation is received. In my telling of the story, I probably focus more on the kids and things around me, not as much on myself—which is what we do, as women.

The book opens with a story that is hilarious but shocking. It’s hard not to give too much away, but it involves a fitting room, a nursing baby, a screaming toddler and a serious bathroom emergency—yours.

I had conversations about that with the publisher. What were we going to do with this story about my pooping in my baby’s diaper? I said, let’s open with it. I led with the most humiliating story because I wanted it to be clear that I’m sharing things I’m not comfortable with. If I’m only sharing things I’m comfortable with, I’m not really being authentic. It was hard, but I wanted to be vulnerable. That I kept it in there—I’m proud of that.

Your book is not full of tips or advice or resources, it’s really a book of your experiences. Why call it a guide?

I was very deliberate in calling it a guide, but it’s meant almost as a play on words. Most guides are written by experts who give us a plan, and we always want a plan. As an anesthesiologist, women come in and present their birthing plans to me all the time, and then nothing goes the way they expected. That’s how parenting is. Life is about the lessons you learn when nothing goes according to plan. My experiences have been my guide.

Who is your parenting hero?

It would have to be my mom. She trained me to look up to her, to respect her, and she also prepared me for therapy [more laughter]. We were raised with a lot of chaos and a lot of love. I’m doing the same thing with my kids. It is my job to try to help them be the best human beings they can be but I’m ready for all of my kids to blame me for therapy.

What’s the most important thing you try to impart as a mother?

Your family is your family. You have ups and downs and disagreements but no matter how upset you get, you always have to come back to each other.

You have children ages 1 to 18. What do you know now that you wish you’d known 18 years ago?

And this too shall pass. If it’s a good day, it passes. If it’s a bad day, it passes.

What do you hope readers take from this book?

I know how important it is to let even one other person in the world know that someone else has gone through what they’re going through and understands. I want that person to know, you’re not in this alone.

Veteran actress Kim Fields has been working in the entertainment industry since she booked her first gig, a Mrs. Butterworth’s commercial, when she was 8. So she knows a thing or two about the ups and downs that come with the job, including how to handle rejection.

Trans Soldier Going to State of the Union Tells Trump: You Can Count on People Like Me

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Army Staff Sgt. Patricia King, a transgender woman, will be sitting in the House chamber for President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address with a message for her commander-in-chief—who doesn’t  believe she should wear the uniform that she has for the past 18 years.

“If I had the opportunity to be the president’s staff [non-commissioned officer] for a while as it applies to transgender issues, I would tell him that the most important thing he can do is to get to know his transgender soldiers,” King King told The Daily Beast by phone before boarding a flight to Washington, D.C.

“See Private Miller from rural Pennsylvania, he can fix anything, even with duct tape. See Private Vasquez, she’s been shooting rifles since she was 6-years-old and you can trust her with a rifle. See Martinez, he’s a transgender soldier, whose parents didn’t support him, but he absolutely loves this country and you can count on him no matter what…I would want President Trump to learn about these people.”

How to turn off Instagram’s new feature that tells others when you were last online

Instagram Activity Status

In an effort to keep its direct messaging system up-to-date with the likes of Facebook Messenger and other chat apps, Instagram this week debuted a new feature that allows you to see when your friends were last online. In order to test the feature yourself, just open the Instagram app, tap on the Direct button at the top right of the screen and you can see when everyone that you have messaged within the app last logged on.

Only people who you follow and those that you’ve messaged in the past will be able to see your activity status, but the feature is turned on by default. In other words, without your prior knowledge, all of your connections on Instagram can now see the last time you opened the app. The good news is that you can toggle the feature off.

President Trump Is Having an Affair ‘Right Now,’ Michael Wolff Tells Bill Maher

HBO

The last time we saw Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time, he was defending his friend Al Franken and condemning his ideological enemy Roy Moore. Three months later, neither man is serving in the U.S. Senate and the government is on the verge of a possible shutdown.

As the Senate began to vote on a continuing resolution to keep the government open, Maher kicked things off by wishing his audience a happy new year, or as he called 2018, “the year of the shithole.” The host summed up Trump’s immigration position with one question: “Why can’t we do immigration more like the way I got Melania, by using a catalogue?”

But the main event of Maher’s first show back came in the form of a sit-down with Michael Wolff, author of Fire and Fury, the book that managed to make Trump’s White House even more chaotic during the first few weeks of the new year.

‘KUWTK’ Recap: Khloe Finally Tells the Family She’s Pregnant

Oh baby! The Khloe Kardashian television pregnancy reveal we’ve all been waiting for finally arrived. While the Revenge Body host may be six months along as of January 2018, the Monday, January 15, episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians brought us a special glimpse into what she was going through at six weeks pregnant when she told both her family and Tristan Thompson’s family!

“I’m pregnant,” Khloe admitted emotionally, while holding a positive pregnancy test … but not to her family. Instead, she first told her assistant, Alexa Okyle. Khloe also described the moment she told Tristan via Facetime: “He was like, ‘Wait are you kidding or serious?’” Khloe, who decided to hold off on telling her family in favor of saving the big reveal for an upcoming barbecue, found herself in the odd position of sharing the news with just her Alexa, Tristan … and probably a few production crew members.

Kourtney Jokes Khloe’s Gained Weight Before Pregnancy Reveal

In a moment of dramatic irony, Khloe found herself in a pickle when sister Kourtney Kardashian kept asking Khloe about her diet routine. Kourtney, in typical blunt fashion, remarked, “You’ve gained a few pounds.” She then added, “Have you amped up the eating since Tristan’s been back?”

She was shocked with the rest of the family when Khloe and Tristan revealed the news in Kris Jenner’s backyard to an audience of both of their families. A choked up and nervous Khloe admitted, while holding niece Dream Kardashian, “We’re so lucky and blessed to have everyone here … we’re having a baby.”

Kylie Finds Out Over FaceTime

Kris’ initial reaction was a sense of relief that Khloe would never be childless. The matriarch admitted, “I always thought that Khloe would may be one of those women who never had kids.” Khloe then revealed the timeline of her pregnancy saying offhandedly, “I’ll be six weeks on Tuesday.”

In a nearly cringe-worthy moment of pink elephants, Khloe told Kylie Jenner the news via Facetime – of course, there was no mention of Kylie’s pregnancy. Kylie seemed overjoyed that Khloe was pregnant saying, while Kim Kardashian later admitted she was “actually pregnant” so they could go through the pregnancy together.

Keeping UP with the Kardashians
Keeping Up with the Kardashians E!

While the pregnancy reveal was the highlight of the special Monday night episode, another highlight was when Kim admitting she had glam squad requests in her will – she always will have her hair done, even if in a coma.

Tell Us: What did you think of Khloe’s pregnancy reveal?

Keeping Up With the Kardashians airs on E! Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.

#FridayReads: ‘Soar!’ By T.D. Jakes Tells You How to Take Flight as an Entrepreneur

There is no single, be-all-end-all book to read if you are an entrepreneur or aspiring business owner. To survive and thrive in business requires continual self-education. However, while there is a plethora of books published for aspiring entrepreneurs, it can be challenging to identify those worth the effort to read. I strongly recommend that you add Soar!: Build Your Vision from the Ground Up, the latest book by New York Times bestselling author T.D. Jakes, to that list.

(Image: Facebook/AlfredAEdmondJr)

Jakes is world-renowned as Bishop T.D. Jakes, the founder and leader of the Dallas-based Potter’s House megachurch. However, while he is called to ministry, his upbringing is rooted in a family legacy of entrepreneurship, including the examples of his father, who owned a janitorial services business, and his mother, who excelled as a savvy real estate investor. As CEO of TDJ Enterprises, L.L.P., Jakes has been true to that legacy, launching successful ventures ranging from major live events like the faith-and-family focused MegaFest to the production of film releases like Jumping the Broom.

I’ve had the privilege of speaking with Jakes often over the years, both via on-stage interviews (including at the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Summit) and private conversations. I can vouch for him as an excellent source of entrepreneurial advice and mentorship. However, since gaining direct access to him is a very remote possibility for most people, his new book Soar! is the next best thing. In fact, reading this book is like getting a guided tour of one of the most imaginative and tuned-in entrepreneurial minds of his generation, while getting specific advice on what it means to get a company off the ground, guide its ascension through storms and obstacles, and perhaps most importantly, keep it from crashing.

With Soar!, Jakes teaches a master course on the risks and rewards of the entrepreneurial lifestyle, and how to live it successfully. Drawing from the example of flight pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright (making business ownership analogous to building a flying machine), Jakes covers practically every challenge you are likely to face during the life cycle of a business, from pre-launch to exit. At each stage, he stresses the importance of preparing for and planning each stage of execution, using plenty of real experiences (his own and others) to illustrate the realities of what’s at stake and to be gained. While Soar! covers marketing, branding, e-commerce, and other expected topics, the most valuable chapters are those that focus on deciding whom to bring on board, when and why—especially when it comes to hiring friends and family.

Whether you’re trying to get past the fear of launching a business, or you’ve already taken off with your enterprise but are struggling to keep it airborne, Soar! was written for you.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

Review: Mudbound Tells a Purely American Story, With Our Painful History of Racism at the Center

Ensemble casts are the ghost ships of awards season, group feats of skill and subtlety that pass almost unnoticed on the rolling, choppy seas of Oscar hype. All moviegoers, critics included, tend to zoom in on individual performers — it’s natural to find yourself drawn to just one face, one distinctive way of moving or talking. But watching a movie in which all the players are perfectly in concert is its own special pleasure, and that’s the case with Dee Rees’ Mudbound. Each actor here — in a cast that includes Jason Mitchell, Mary J. Blige and Carey Mulligan — is attuned to the specific gifts of the others. Together, they’re a reminder that actors’ key tools are the ability to listen and see, and not just react.

Mudbound — which was adapted from Hillary Jordan’s 2008 novel by Rees and Virgil Williams — is an intimate epic about two American farming families, one black and one white, working the land in the Mississippi Delta in the 1940s. Laura McAllan (Carey Mulligan) is young wife and mother who’s dragged away from Memphis city life by her domineering husband, Henry (Jason Clarke), an engineer who decides he wants to return to his farming roots. On a portion of the McAllans’ spread live the Jacksons, tenant farmers whose ties to the land go back generations; by all rights, they own it, though they have no deed to prove legally that it’s theirs.

So Hap Jackson (Rob Morgan) and his wife, Florence (Blige), just keep working the land, hoping to save enough to someday buy their independence. They’re also raising a family: The oldest is Ronsel (Mitchell), who, stoking his mother’s greatest fears, goes off to war. Stationed in Europe — he’s a member of the 761st Tank Battalion, also known as the Black Panthers, made up largely of black soldiers — Ronsel faces different hardships than the ones he grew up with, but he also finds a new sense of freedom. When he returns home, readjusting to civilian life is hard enough, but dealing with Stateside racism is harder still. He finds a friend and comrade in Henry’s brother, Jamie (Garrett Hedlund), a pilot who has also just returned from the war and is suffering from what we’d now call PTSD, though the men of his era had no convenient name for it.

Mudbound works as a thumbnail picture of midcentury American racism and injustice, and as a reminder of how slowly things really change in this country, as much as we like to think of ourselves as progressive thinkers and lovers of freedom. But you can’t just write ideas on the screen: Your performers have to embody them, and there’s not a minute in Mudbound that doesn’t feel deeply felt and believable. Rees, who previously wrote and directed the 2011 coming-of-age drama Pariah, has shaped the material beautifully: This is just a good story, period, and Rees never loses sight of that. It’s told from the shifting points of view of each of its major characters, but it never feels cluttered or confusing. And the movie’s sense of history is woven tightly into its landscape. At one point Mulligan’s Laura reflects, in voice-over, on the muddy bleakness of her surroundings (“I dreamed in brown”), and Rachel Morrison’s cinematography provides the visual evidence. Morrison makes this world look both enduring and unsettling, the kind of place whose spirit creeps into your bones. Although Mudbound is being released in select theaters, it’s also available on Netflix, and its complex visual beauty works even on the small screen.

And still it’s the faces of Mudbound that really stick with you. Mulligan’s Laura, a deeply unhappy country wife, wears her tired beauty like a kind of fortitude: She’ll get through this life if it kills her. But at least Laura is white. Florence’s life is even harder, and filled with bigger roadblocks. As Blige plays her, she’s a woman who sees everything around her — beauty as well as cruelty—with the utmost clarity, though she never gives in to martyrdom. Morgan is deeply touching as Hap, the patriarch who wants to do everything possible for his family, pushing himself well past his physical limits. Hedlund and Clarke are terrific as brothers linked by blood but seemingly little else. And Mitchell — who was so marvelous as Eazy-E in the 2015 Straight Outta Compton — is superb here, as a young man struggling with what it means to be at home within his own heart, and within his country. Mudbound — tough and bittersweet and, in places, painfully brutal — is all about what it really means to be an American. If you’re doing it right, it doesn’t come easy — and it costs some people more dearly than others.

Trump Tells China He Believes in a Solution to the North Korea Nuclear Crisis

U.S. President Donald Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday that he believes, like Xi, that a solution can be found to the North Korean nuclear issue, a day after warning Pyongyang of the grave danger of developing nuclear weapons.

Speaking alongside Xi in the Chinese capital, Trump also said it was disappointing that his predecessors had let the bilateral trade balance get out of kilter.

“But we will make it fair and it will be tremendous for both of us,” Trump said, expressing respect for Xi.

Trump is pressing China to tighten the screws further on North Korea and its development of nuclear weapons. At least modest progress is hoped for, although there are no immediate signs of a major breakthrough, a U.S. official said earlier on Thursday.

Referring to Xi, Trump said: “I do believe there’s a solution to that, as do you.”

In a show of the importance China puts on Trump’s first official visit, Thursday’s welcoming ceremony outside Beijing’s Great Hall of the People overlooking Tiananmen Square was broadcast live on state television–unprecedented treatment for a visiting leader.

Xi said he had a deep exchange of views with Trump and reached consensus on numerous issues of mutual concern.

“For China, cooperation is the only real choice, only win-win can lead to an even better future,” he said.

Xi said China and the United States strengthened high-level dialogue on all fronts over the past year and increased coordination on major international issues, such as the Korean peninsula and Afghanistan.

“Relations between China and the United States are now on a new historical starting point,” Xi said

Trump and Xi hit it off at their first meeting in April at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and continued their “bromance” on Wednesday with an afternoon of sightseeing together with their wives, followed by dinner. However, deep divisions persist over trade and North Korea.

And while Xi is riding high after consolidating power at a twice-a-decade Communist Party Congress last month, Trump comes to China saddled with low public approval ratings and dogged by investigations into Russian links to his election campaign.

‘HORRIBLE’ TRADE SURPLUS

Trump has ratcheted up his criticism of China’s massive trade surplus with the United States – calling it “embarrassing” and “horrible” last week – and has accused Beijing of unfair trade practices, fueling worries of increased tension between the world’s two largest trading countries.

For its part, China says U.S. restrictions on Chinese investments in the United States and on high-tech exports need to be addressed.

More than $ 250 billion in commercial deals between U.S. and Chinese firms were signed during the visit, China’s commerce minister said. Several corporate CEOs are in Beijing as part of a delegation led by U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Some in the U.S. business community have expressed worry that contract wins could come at the expense of resolving long-standing complaints over market access restrictions in China.

“This shows that we have a strong, vibrant bilateral economic relationship, and yet we still need to focus on leveling the playing field because U.S. companies continue to be disadvantaged doing business in China,” said William Zarit, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

Trump railed against China’s trade practices during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign and threatened to take action once in office. But he has since held back on any major trade penalties, making clear he was doing so to give Beijing time to make progress reining in North Korea.

‘IN SYNC’

A U.S. official said both sides are “in sync” about wanting to minimize friction during the visit and recreate the positive tone of the Mar-a-Lago summit.

Trump was not expected to put much emphasis in his talks with Xi on thorny issues like the disputed South China Sea and self-ruled Taiwan, claimed by China as its own, although the two presidents’ aides may deal with those matters privately, the official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

China has repeatedly pushed back at suggestions it should be doing more to rein in North Korea, which does about 90 percent of its trade with China, saying it is fully enforcing U.N. sanctions and that everyone has a responsibility to lower tensions and get talks back on track.

Trump used some of his toughest language yet against North Korea in a wide-ranging address in Seoul on Wednesday that lodged specific accusations of chilling human rights abuses, although he offered no evidence to support the accusations.

He also called on countries around the world to isolate Pyongyang by denying it “any form of support, supply or acceptance”.

Chinese state media praised the tone of the initial get-together on Thursday, part of what China has promised will be a “state visit plus” for Trump.

“Trump seems to be pragmatic on his Beijing policy, and has no interest in ideological diplomacy. He hasn’t used the issue of human rights to make trouble for China so far, and this means theSino-US relationship can focus on substantive matters,” influential tabloid the Global Times said in an editorial.

Lauren Conrad’s makeup artist tells us the *one* skin care product we’re missing from our routine

Lauren Conrad’s makeup artist tells us the *one* skin care product we’re missing from our routine

Lauren Conrad’s makeup artist tells us the *one* skin care product we’re missing from our routine

In the past few months there’s been a real push-back from beauty experts when it comes to skin cleansing — gone are the days of using harsh scrubs and foaming cleansers that strip your skin anytime you use them. Gentler, more natural methods, like oil cleansing, are sweeping the scene, but few techniques have grown in popularity quite like the rise of Micellar Water. Up until quite recently, our options here in the states have been quite limited, but thanks to Amy Nadine’s new Micellar Cleansing Water, jumping on the bandwagon is as easy as taking a quick trip to your friendly neighborhood Costco.

Amy Nadine’s Micellar Cleansing Water is now available for $ 14.99.

This three-in-one micellar water cleanses, tones your skin, and removes makeup all in one go. It’s formulated with white tea, which is rich in anti-oxidants and coconut water to hydrate and replenish your skin.

According to Amy Nadine, micellar water is the one thing we ~need~ to add to our skin care routine.

Here’s the thing: she is a celebrity makeup artist whose work you’ve seen in every major fashion magazine in the past few years. She’s worked with Lauren Conrad, Susan Sarandon, and Krysten Ritter, to name a few. And she knows what she’s talking about when it comes to beauty.

Our lovely @laurenconrad at the @rebeccaminkoff Fashion Show today with hair by @ryanrichman and makeup by me!

A post shared by A M Y N A D I N E 💄 👑 (@amynadinemakeup) on

So why did the celeb makeup artist come out with a micellar water instead of a makeup product?

Let’s just say Amy is all about gorgeous skin, and she believes using micellar water is what we’re missing from our skin care routine. She told HelloGiggles,

“My husband is French, and every time we spend time at his friends’ home in Paris, I talk to the women about their gorgeous skin. When it comes to makeup we mostly use the same products but in regards to skin care, none of them believe in “washing their faces” — no face wash, no splashing with water until it’s squeaky clean. That concept seems really weird and foreign to them while to us, it seems crazy not to wash our faces!”

She explains that instead of washing their faces with traditional cleansers like we do, they use micellar water. While the use of micellar water may be a new concept on this side of the pond, it’s a total no-brainer with the fine folks in France.

Mama's got a new 70's shag! Thank you @pamwiggy!

A post shared by A M Y N A D I N E 💄 👑 (@amynadinemakeup) on

Whether your skin is oily, flaky, irritated, dry, or acne-prone, micellar water will do it some major good.

Amy thinks it’s a total lifesaver,

“I added it to my routine two years ago and my skin is so much calmer, clearer, and more balanced. My skin is actually cleaner than when I’ve used face wash. If you don’t believe me, wash your face, exfoliate it, and then wipe a cotton pad soaked in my micellar water and inspect it afterward. You’ll die at what it picked up that the face wash and scrub left behind! It’s wild that something so moisturizing is also so powerful at cleansing.”

We love when makeup artists develop their own lines, because who better to know what skin needs and how best to care for it? Amy noted that her work as a makeup artist influences the kind of products she makes, and she works to keep her clients’ skin looking radiant and alive.

“Every product I pitch has to have skin care properties in it. And any skin care products I create have to keep the skin happy and hydrated. Skin is everything!”

Few things make us as happy as when women create accessible, affordable products that help us feel good and keep our skin healthy. Off to Costco we go, because Amy has made a serious case for micellar water, and now we must add it to our routine.

‘Detroit’ Tells A Gruesome, Horrifying Story That Must Be Seen

Detroit

Detroit is a powerful film that uncovers a series of events that led to the killing of three unarmed, black teenage boys by white police officers. The movie is set during the 1967 Detroit riots, where outraged communities destroyed public and private property in protest against unjust social and economic conditions in the Motor City.

Rather than digging into the impact of the riots, a large portion of the film is spent recounting the real-life horror that a group of young black men and white women experienced inside of the Algiers Motel on July 25, 1967. Police believed that a sniper was hiding out in the motel and tried to force the victims into a confession by viciously interrogating and beating them. These scenes of brutality are severely uncomfortable and raw to the point of nausea. By the end of the movie, I (and others I watched the film with) was left feeling angry and unresolved, especially in light of the recent acts of police violence against black bodies in the age of smartphones. Still, that didn’t deter me from seeing the film twice. For me, the film was a painful reminder of why we cannot forget, neglect, or trivialize the systems of oppression that continue to kill African Americans. It exposes the grit of racism in a way that cannot be erased from memory and reinforces the need for us to fight for freedom. It also gives voice to the real-life victims—Carl Cooper, 17, Fred Temple, 18, and Aubrey Pollard, 19—who never received justice.

In an interview with Black Enterprise, actor John Boyega talked about his role in the movie as Melvin Dismukes, the black security guard who volunteered to assist police in finding the sniper at the Algiers. Nevertheless, he found himself in a compromising position that night, feeling helpless while watching the brutality.

“I relate to the character in a sense that he is a man that is open to several different perspectives, he’s open to several different views,” said Boyega, who starred in Star Wars. “He was a working man, but at the same time was pushed into a situation in which he was trying to protect other black men.” He added that Dismukes “had to kind of stand up to racial injustice but in a very subtle and depressing way.”

BE also spoke to actors Algee Smith and Jason Mitchell who talked about how hard it was to make the film due to its heavy context.

“It affected me a lot,” said Smith. “We had a hard time decompressing, I had a hard time letting that go [once] leaving the set.” “It was uncomfortable,” added Mitchell. “Sometimes you just need an emotional draining to let it out.”

“Detroit” is currently playing in theaters around the country.

Kumail Nanjiani Tells Grads To ‘Have Sex With An Immigrant’

Immigrants may feel a little tense about what’s happening in American these days, but comedian Kumail Nanjiani has a plan to make things feel a little more relaxing for everyone.

“Have sex with an immigrant,” Nanjiani told the graduates of Grinnell College in Iowa during a commencement speech. “We’re going through a tough time right now, and it would just be really great for morale.”

Nanjiani graduated from the liberal arts school in 2001. Grinnell invited him back this week to deliver the commencement address to the graduating class of 2017. During the ceremony, the school awarded Nanjiani an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

The star of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” opened up to the graduates about his experience moving from Pakistan to Iowa for college and how it shaped the way he moved through the world.

“When I came to Grinnell I was a devout Muslim who had never romantically touched a girl and I was going to get a degree that guaranteed me a job,” Nanjiani said. “By the time I graduated I was basically a Rastafarian with a white American girlfriend and a philosophy degree. College changes you, is my point.”

He also offered advice on how to take on bigotry, even if it is uncomfortable.

“We cannot expect others to understand our point of view if we don’t understand theirs,” he said. “It’s uncomfortable and awkward and infuriating and it hurts your brain, but with that pain can come growth and real change.”

“Being a fish out of water is tough, but that’s how you evolve,” he added. “I think that’s scientifically accurate — I don’t know, I had a liberal arts education.”

Nanjiani advised the graduates to live with intention and not fear failure ― unless, he joked, you’re the person who created the exploding Samsung Galaxy phones.

“I never thought big picture,” Nanjiani said. “That would have overwhelming. So what I’m saying is, you can go slow. Allow your dreams and goals to change, but live an intentional life.”

He continued: “Here’s the big secret I’ve learned in the last few years: Nobody knows what they’re doing … Everybody’s winging it out there. Some people are just better at pretending to be confident because nobody’s done ― nobody’s cooked.”

Tone-Deaf Jewelry Ad Tells Customers To ‘Throw Rocks At Girls’

A jewelry store in Asheville, North Carolina has apologized for its tone-deaf billboard ad that caused outrage on the internet.

The billboard in question comes from Spicer Greene Jewelers and is currently located near Interstate 240. It reads: “Sometimes, It’s ok to throw rocks at girls…,” surrounded by photos of brightly colored jewels, aka “rocks.”

The company issued an apology on Facebook Thursday after the ad sparked a negative reaction on Twitter and in the media

Eva-Michelle Spicer, the co-owner of Spicer Greene Jewelers, told The Huffington Post via email that the billboard will come down as soon as they can replace it with their next campaign (which is usually around every four weeks, according to Asheville paper, The Citizen Times ). When HuffPost asked who came up with the statement, Spicer said, “It’s a common phrase in the jewelry industry. We did not invent it.”

The majority of responses to Spicer Greene’s Facebook apology implied they many thought the ad was funny and that critics of it were being too sensitive.

“BRILLIANT AD…No apology required,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “These people are idiots and will probably never have any shiny rocks thrown at them! The billboard is funny! Get a sense of humor, life will be much better!”

One woman complained about the “snowflakes that whine over everything,” and told the company, “I hope you make a 500% increase in sales.”

Many of the Twitter responses to the company’s apologies also maintained the billboard was “hilarious:”

Others, like Chelsea Clinton, found the ad incredibly offensive and pointed out that joking about violence against women is “never funny.” Especially in a world where women are still stoned to death

“The billboard was intent to be a nostalgic thought of a childhood teaching,” Spicer told ABC News 13 WLOS. “That it’s not ok to throw rocks at girls, it’s not ok to throw rocks at anyone… It saddens me that it was taken that way, because it certainly wasn’t intended.”

Burnt-Out Art Student Tells Off Professor With Message Hiding In Plain Sight

A college student has turned the act of telling someone off into an art form.

Lama Ali, who attends school in Virginia, had three final assignments due on the same day for her fashion drawing class. Exhausted after working on one painting for seven hours straight, the 20-year-old decided to include a message in American Sign Language to her professor:

“You got me fucked up,” a bunch of hands in the painting spell out in ASL, interwoven among the female figures.

“Honestly the idea just came to me while I was finishing up the piece,” Ali told The Huffington Post. “I was looking at it and thought, ‘This could really use something else.’ And then the idea struck me: Why not secretly express how I was feeling while struggling at the library at 4 a.m.?”

Ali, who does not know ASL, told HuffPost she taught herself a little bit just for this particular assignment.

“You know it’s bad when you have to learn a whole other language to express how done you are,” she said.

Once the fashion design major had finished her masterpiece, she posted it to Twitter on Dec. 7, where it has received over 113,000 likes and 48,000 retweets. And people really love her unbridled level of full-on pettiness.

“As petty as the idea was, I was actually really excited to make this piece,” Ali said. “Because I really felt like I was making something that showed my creativity and emotion rather than just completing the assignment.”

But, pettiness aside, most people straight up love it:

Ali said that she decided to use sign language because she wanted the message to be there, but not be immediately clear. She also wanted to practice drawing hands, so ASL seemed like a great way of marrying both those ideas.

“I remembered seeing a post on Tumblr long ago with a similar phrase in sign, and I thought the letters would look cool with the figures on the painting.”

Inspired by the post, she decided to look up the letters in ASL to spell out the message. Someone on Twitter even did the good work of circling them in the painting:

Ali told HuffPost that when she finally presented the piece to her professor in her class, he absolutely loved it.

“Most of my friends in class actually knew about the secret message, so I was really surprised when no one laughed or blew my cover during critique.”

She also admits that her professor still doesn’t know about the message, despite her post getting so much attention.

“The last time I checked, he still had no clue,” she said.

Michelle Obama Tells Vogue ‘It’s Time’ To Leave The White House

First Lady Michelle Obama’s days in the White House are numbered, and she’s savoring every last moment as she prepares to say goodbye.

“Looking out on the South Lawn and the Washington Monument and it had just rained and the grass was really green and everything popped a little bit more,” she told writer Jonathan Van Meter for Vogue’s December cover story. “It’s soooo beautiful. And for that moment I thought, I’m going to miss waking up to this, having access to this anytime I want.”

Yet she’s ready for the next step, she said.

“On the flip side . . . it’s time. I think our democracy has it exactly right: two terms, eight years. It’s enough. Because it’s important to have one foot in reality when you have access to this kind of power. The nature of living in the White House is isolating. And I think Barack and I—because we’re kind of stubborn—we’ve maintained some normalcy, mostly because of the age of our kids. I go out to dinner with my girlfriends; I go to Sasha’s games; Barack has coached a little basketball with Sasha’s team. But at the same time, when you can’t walk into CVS?”

And while she admits that she doesn’t know what that step will be, she vows to continue fighting on behalf of the issues she cares about.

“I will always be engaged in some way in public service and public life,” she said. “I’ve always felt very alive using my gifts and talents to help other people. I sleep better at night. I’m happier.”

Van Meter spent a month by the first lady’s side, accompanying her to various engagements and speaking to her staffers.

He shows just how revolutionary her tenure has been. She took a “job with no salary, a platform with no power” and loaded it with significance and purpose, he wrote.

“Everything we do is by choice,” she said. “I could have spent eight years doing anything, and at some level, it would have been fine. I could have focused on flowers. I could have focused on decor. I could have focused on entertainment. Because any First Lady, rightfully, gets to define her role. There’s no legislative authority; you’re not elected. And that’s a wonderful gift of freedom.”

She is the perfect mix of substance and insouciance, Van Meter argued.

He highlights her accomplishments in the last eight years ― like Reach Higher and Let Girls Learn, two education initiatives ― as well as her impeccable style and penchant for SoulCycle and carpool karaoke with late-night host James Corden.

Particularly remarkable has been her choice to spend so much time learning from young people.

“It makes us want to live right and do right and be right—Every. Single. Day—so that we don’t ever disappoint these kids and they have something to hold on to, and so that they know—as I say all the time—I can do this. You can do this,” she said.

Joe Plumeri Tells New York Law School Grads: ‘Go Play In Traffic’

Businessman Joe Plumeri, who currently serves as vice chairman of the First Data Board of Directors, gave the commencement address at New York Law School on Tuesday. He dropped out of New York Law School in the 1960s to pursue a job on Wall Street but was awarded an honorary degree this week.

In his energetic speech, Plumeri said graduates must have commitment, purpose and vision in order to have success. He encouraged graduates to commit fully to whatever they wanted to do, using the analogy that Vikings burned their ships when they landed at a place they wanted to conquer. But without purpose, Plumeri said, they won’t succeed.

“The purpose has got to be genuine concern for what you do and the people you do it for,” he said.

Plumeri told the graduates to “go play in traffic” to find their vision.

“Now you’re saying, ‘What’s wrong with the guy? He wants me to go get hit by a car!'” Plumeri said. “That’s not what I want you to do. What I want you to do is engage.”

He further explained that “playing in traffic” is all about going out there and exploring your vision, making blunders and taking risks.

“Go out, play in traffic,” he said. “Something’s gonna happen eventually.”

‘Bravetown’ Director Tells Why Latin Americans Can Relate To Theme Of Losing Family To War

Daniel Duran has made a name for himself directing music videos for some the world’s biggest Latin stars. Now, the 35-year-old Venezuelan-born director has combined his passion for music with a dramatic script for his first feature film, “Bravetown.”

Duran’s directorial debut focuses on 17-year-old New York City teen Josh Harvest (Lucas Till, “X-Men: First Class”), who is a troubled but talented DJ sent to spend time with his estranged father (Josh Duhamel) after an accidental drug overdose. As Josh arrives to deal with his own family problems, he begins to realize that residents of the small Army town in North Dakota are struggling to come to terms with losing many of their loved ones to war.

“Bravetown” also includes performances by Kherington Payne (“Fame”) and Oscar-nominated actress Laura Dern (“Wild”), as a clinically depressed mother unable to cope with the loss of her son.

Duran recently discussed the film with The Huffington Post via email. He opened up about how his relationship with his father connects him to the film, and how many Latin Americans can identify with the movie’s theme of losing loved ones to violence.

daniel duran
Director Daniel Duran (left) and actor Josh Duhamel on the set of “Bravetown.”

You were born and raised in Venezuela. How did you end up doing a film that deals with topics like the trauma of returning war veterans and how a town in middle America is dealing losing loved ones to war?

From the start, the theme was something I felt was very universal because it’s a story about a DJ that has these personal and family problems — problems that affect anyone in the world, from any nationality — and that was my main focus.

I think when you deal with conflicts concerning family, love, heartbreak, father-son relationships, they’re topics that anyone can identify with and that’s where I got hooked in this project. Plus, the movie is charged with music and I come from that world with my music video [background]. It was easy for me to understand Josh’s musical world and how he used music to deal with the whirlwind of emotions he was living. It is a movie that exists in a totally American world, but at the same time it touches upon very universal themes.

How did you feel personally connected to the story?

I feel I connected with the emotions. I also come from a family with separated parents, in which I didn’t have a relationship with my father. The difference is that Josh experienced that as a teenager, and for me it was imagining what that relationship would’ve been like. But unlike Josh, my relationship with my mother has always been spectacular and I never had the type of issues he had [with his mom.]

On the other hand, I felt I identified with Josh’s musical connection as a DJ because music has always been present in my life and in my creations. One of the things I’ve always liked is to talk to young people and I feel that his movie connects with teens, because despite it being a very mature story, it is seen from their point of view.

What kind of obstacles did you face while working on “Bravetown?”

This was my first film and it was a big cast. I think my first obstacle was how to face that challenge and the insecurity I had at one point about being able to succeed. Having English be my second language was also a big obstacle, to think that at some point I wasn’t going to be able to communicate exactly what I wanted. Thank God I had the proper words to be able to express what I wanted to the crew and cast, to be able to steer the wheel of this boat.

Back to the theme of losing loved ones to war and how you deal with that, there are plenty of people in Latin America who can relate to what it’s like to lose someone to violence.

Perhaps in Latin American countries we don’t lose soldiers, but we have a high percentage of deaths caused by crime. That’s a kind of war with which we’ve have to deal. I think that people from other countries will identify with “Bravetown,” because it’s that feeling of losing a loved one to violence that creates wounds that are difficult to heal. And how you face that loss, that is the important point of the movie.

What was it like working with Laura Dern, who recently was nominated for the Oscar for “Wild”?

Laura is a true lady and working with her was incredible — a delight. I learned a lot from her. For me it was an experience to create that character with her because it was written one way and when we sat down to talk, we gave it a different tone. That’s the magic that happens when you work with someone with her talent.

This was your first film, but what can we expect from you in the future?

I want to continue telling great stories and entertaining. Right now I’m focused on closing the chapter with “Bravetown,” but I am starting to read and write ideas. But I don’t know what’s coming yet.

And now that you are closing the chapter, how do you feel about your first film?

I feel very happy, excited and enthusiastic about people seeing my first project. I think it was an incredible project with an excellent cast. … I [also] had the opportunity to work with my director of photography Angel Berroeta — who has been with me since my music videos and with pride I can say he’s from Maracay, Venezuela — Salvadorian writer Oscar Torres, Argentine production designer Tomas Voth, Venezuelan composer Angelo Milli. You could say this was a movie made by Latinos for Americans, and that makes me very proud.

“Bravetown” will be in select theaters beginning on Friday, May 8.

CORRECTION: This article has been edited to correct the reference to Laura Dern, who has been nominated for Oscars twice, but has not won.

Jon Stewart Tells Dana Perino That Fox’s ‘The Five’ & ‘The Daily Show’ Would Make A ‘Sh*t Taco’

“The Daily Show” is not exactly known as friendly turf for Fox News hosts. But on Wednesday night, “The Five” co-host Dana Perino ventured into what many at her channel might regard as enemy territory.

When Jon Stewart explained that his team was “obsessed” with “The Five,” Perino suggested their programs join forces.

“It’s like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — peanut butter and chocolate,” Perino said. “Maybe we could all get together here and have a mashup.”

“I think of it more as a shit taco,” Stewart replied. “I’m not saying who’s who. I’m just saying I don’t know that it’s necessarily two great tastes that go great together.”

As he mocked some of her co-hosts, Perino gamely played along. And when Stewart asked about the “dumb guy” on the “The Five,” Perino quickly asked, “Could you be more specific?”

Stewart was referring to Eric Bolling, who Perino noted had a dog named Freedom “after the Freedom Towers, ok, so watch the jokes.”

That elicited an eye roll from Stewart.

“My dog’s named Holocaust,” Stewart shot back. “I’m just saying, you want to have a dog tragedy-off, well, I think I’ve got that covered.”

Jane Lynch Tells The Real Story Of How Lisa Kudrow Became Phoebe

Actress and comedian Jane Lynch knows a little something about Lisa Kudrow’s career before Kudrow landed the iconic role of Phoebe in the beloved TV series “Friends.”

In a conversation with HuffPost Live’s Alyona Minkovski about the final season of “Glee,” Lynch both debunked the “Hollywood urban myth” that claimed she auditioned for the quirky “Friends” role and explained how Lisa Kudrow nailed the part.

“Lisa Kudrow got the role [as Roz] on ‘Fraiser’ and was fired,” Lynch said, later adding, “And then Lisa, they cast in ‘Friends,’ and then I mean, come on, that was the role of a lifetime.”

As far as for the aforementioned urban myth, Lynch said, “I read … that I auditioned for that, too” and later added she wished she had gotten that caliber of audition at that time in her career.
