There’s a Finance Podcast for the Ladies Hosted by Angela Yee and More

We can all attest to being in a financial rut at some point in our lives. Well, if you are still there, three amazing ladies have teamed up to create a podcast for you. Turn your attention to Exhibit A: Color Full Lives hosted by, The Breakfast Club’s radio co-host Angela Yee, My Fab Finance’s Tonya Rapley, who has graced our cover and Call Your Girlfriend podcast host, Aminatou Sow. These women are having the very uncomfortable conversations around finance that will hopefully help us all get in formation.

One conversation, of many, took place during this year’s 2018 Essence Festival panel, “Candid Finance Conversation with StateFarm.” The ladies talked very candidly about their own journeys to financial freedom while sharing tips with the audience, helping us all understand why it’s so important to be financially fit.

“I wanted to be able to empower myself and empower others through conversations likes these,” said Yee in a recent post from Essence. The radio personality also owns a Brooklyn juice bar and hosts her own podcast, Lip Service. “I used to worry about things like retirement and thinking I had to wait until I had a husband to buy a house. I was able to go ahead and become a homeowner on my own.”

“If money isn’t right then things don’t move. Money gives you that peace of mind and helps you to plan for future generations whether that’s your kids, nieces, nephews, god kids, neighbors, whoever,” Rapley shared with Essence.

The overarching theme for the podcast is to empower listeners with the blueprint for financial well-being and additionally, Rapley shares these tips daily through her platform, My Fab Finance, a personal finance site dedicated to helping millennial women change their money story and as she states, become their own fabulous.

“We’re just three women figuring it out just like you,” added Sow. “We’re wanting to keep ourselves accountable and stay accountable to each other, buy homes, pay off debt, learn how to invest.”

Color Full Lives in now in Season 4 can be heard in full here.

There’s a chance next year’s Galaxy S10 might be faster than this year’s iPhone

Galaxy S10 Release Date

The Galaxy Note 9 isn’t even here yet, and there’s already talk about Samsung’s next Galaxy S model, the S10, which is supposed to bring over several design changes and improvements.

A new report says that the Galaxy S10 will pack a much faster Samsung-made chip, which is only to be expected. The Galaxy S9’s Exynos 9810 already proved that Samsung is getting better at designing its own processors, although the Snapdragon 845 version of the phone outclassed it in real-life tests, in spite of scoring worse in benchmarks.

Chloe Bartoli: There’s ‘No Bad Blood’ Between Me and Sofia After Scott Disick Drama

No drama here. Chloe Bartoli and Sofia Richie have “no bad blood” between them despite their rumored rift over Scott Disick.

“Me and Sofia are cool,” the 28-year-old stylist told Us Weekly at RDxCaliGirls by Chloe Bartoli for Rocket Dog Launch Party at sbe’s Doheny Room in West Hollywood on Thursday, June 6. “We have no bad blood at all.”

Sofia Richie Scott Disick Relationship Timeline

Disick’s longtime relationship with Kourtney Kardashian, whom he shares three children with, ended in 2015 after he was spotted partying with Bartoli, who he dated in the past.

A source told Us in September 2017 that there was tension between Bartoli and Richie when the 19-year-old model starting dating Disick.

“After Sofia started hooking up with Scott, Chloe stopped speaking to her. It’s a mess,” a source told Us at the time. “They were the best of friends and were inseparable.” The women also unfollowed each other on Instagram at the time.

Bartoli, meanwhile, says thing are good now and explained why Richie often works with her twin sister, Marie-Lou Bartoli, who is also a stylist, instead of her. “She just was more Sofia’s style in the moment, so she went with Sofia and I went more with my other clients,” Bartoli explained. “I didn’t have time for everything.”

“About a year ago we used to work together and it was kind of awesome because every time we had clients, we would see what vibe the client was and we would know which one was going to be more present in that fitting and who was more comfortable in what,” she added about her sister. “And now we stopped working together a year ago just because our styles are very different and she’s doing a line and I’m doing my own thing, so I think it was good that we separated because we have such different vibes, but we’re still great and everything is good.”

Richie and Disick, meanwhile, recently got back together after a brief split. A source told Us earlier this month that the model broke up with the reality star after he was caught getting too close to another women at Kanye West’s album listening party in Wyoming and after he “cheated on her in Miami.” Two days later, the pair reconciled.

“They are now back together and Scott isn’t done with her,” an insider explained to Us on June 4. “Sofia had a strange weekend and Scott and her are working through things.”

There’s No Good Reason For Scott Pruitt to Still Have A Job

Chip Somodevilla/Getty

Scott Pruitt is a wart on the Trump administration—an embarrassment so comically corrupt that it’s become impossible to keep track of all the investigations into his unscrupulousness.

Scott Pruitt is also teetering. And if the president had any long term strategic vision, he would recognize that a reckoning is coming for his EPA chief—an inglorious final fall from grace—and that Pruitt’s exodus will ultimately be good for his administration.

Everyone else sees this. Pruitt’s traditional allies are fleeing. In recent days, Senator Joni Ernst said that Pruitt is “about as swampy as you get here in Washington, D.C. And if the president wants to drain the swamp, he needs to take a look at his own Cabinet.” Fox News Research has calculated Pruitt’s lavish spending, and dubbed his EPA the “(E)xpensive (P)ruitt (A)gency.” Meanwhile, the Washington Examiner’s Byron York and Tim Carney are calling him out.

Netflix cancellations are on the rise, but there’s no reason to worry

Netflix Cancellations

There’s no question that Netflix is an absolute juggernaut when it comes to media content. Each and every month, the streaming giant releases an eclectic array of original programming that’s practically impossible for any one person to keep up with. And speaking to Netflix’s ambitious goals with respect to original content, the company earlier this year said that it plans to have 1,000 originals on its platform by the end of 2018.

At the same time, Netflix in recent months has gone on something of a cancellation spree. In 2018 alone, Netflix canceled 13 shows, including the critically-acclaimed Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Everything Sucks, and the poorly received Disjointed. All the more interesting is that some shows were given a pink-slip after just one season on the air.

Apple Watch still dominates the market, but there’s a surprising amount of competition

Apple Watch

It’s now been more than three years since the original Apple Watch hit store shelves and Apple still hasn’t disclosed any sales figures for its increasingly popular wearable. While Apple isn’t likely to change its strategy in this regard anytime soon, company executives over the years haven’t been afraid to boast about the popularity of the Apple Watch while avoiding any mention of precise sales figures.

Case in point: Tim Cook during an earnings conference call this past March said that Apple Watch Sales during the 2017 holiday quarter were record-breaking, no doubt fueled by the popularity of the Apple Watch Series 3 and the inclusion of LTE connectivity on select models.

U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Coach Martha Karolyi Says There’s ‘No Way’ She Suspected Sexual Abuse By Larry Nassar

(NEW YORK) — Former USA Gymnastics women’s national team coordinator Martha Karolyi and husband Bela tell NBC they were unaware of the abusive behavior by a former national team doctor now serving decades in prison.

Martha Karolyi led the national team for 15 years before retiring after the 2016 Rio Olympics. She tells Savannah Guthrie in “no way” did she suspect Larry Nassar was sexually abusing athletes under the guise of treatment.

“The whole gymnastics community couldn’t recognize this,” Martha Karolyi said in an excerpt provided to The Associated Press on Friday by NBC. “Everybody said, ‘Larry Nassar is a good doctor. Larry Nassar is a good guy.’”

The Karolyis spoke as part of a Dateline NBC special entitled “Silent No More” scheduled to air Sunday. The one-hour special, the first prime-time event hosted by Guthrie, takes a look at the fallout from revelations about years of abuse by Nassar involving hundreds of former athletes, including several members of the U.S. Olympic team.

The Karolyis have been named as co-defendants in several civil lawsuits filed against Nassar and USA Gymnastics. Several victims, including two-time Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney, say they were abused at the Karolyi’s Ranch near Houston. The ranch served as the training home for USA Gymnastics during most of Martha Karolyi’s highly successful tenure running the national team.

Guthrie spent hours with the Karolyis at the ranch after the couple agreed to speak publicly for the first time since Martha Karolyi’s retirement following the 2016 Olympics.

“I think they felt like it was time for them to tell their side of the story,” Guthrie said. “I think they’ve watched and seen as their reputation has really taken a hit and people have asked a lot of questions about what they knew and just as importantly what they should have known.”

Guthrie said she was “surprised” the Karolyis came forward despite the potential legal fallout.

“They answered every question,” Guthrie said. “At no time did their lawyer jump in and say ‘You can’t answer that.’”

Nassar spent nearly three decades at USA Gymnastics before being fired in 2015 after complaints about his behavior. He continued to work at Michigan State University through the fall of 2016 before being hit with federal charges. Nassar is now serving decades in prison for molesting women and girls and for possessing child pornography.

Nassar was already established in the program when Martha Karolyi took over. He would visit the ranch during national team training sessions and also accompany the team to events around the world. Maroney said she was abused “hundreds” of times by Nassar.

Martha Karolyi denied having any knowledge about Nassar’s pattern of abuse.

“I heard during the testimonies (at Nassar’s sentencing) that some of the parents were in the therapy room with their own child and Larry Nassar was performing this,” Martha Karolyi told Guthrie. “And the parent couldn’t see. How I could see?”

There’s a new type of iPhone cracker available, and cops are dying to buy it

GrayBox iPhone hacking 2018 how to break

In 2016, the FBI’s legal quest to force Apple to unlock the iPhone 5c of the San Bernadino shooter brought the issue of phone encryption fully into the public conciousness. Although people generally knew that smartphones were secure, it wasn’t until the highly public court case that people realized even the country’s top law-enforcement agency couldn’t easily crack basic consumer hardware.

Trying to break the encryption on the iPhone is a constantly-evolving cat-and-mouse game, and not many law enforcement agencies are capable of taking part. Rather than hiring their own cryptographers, law enforcement around the country instead buys “exploits” from hacking firms, who sell their technology to anyone who can pay tens of thousands of dollars. A new type of iPhone cracker, called the GrayKey, is a simple-to-use box that can reportedly crack the latest iPhone X running iOS 11, and as you’d expect, cops are lining up to buy it.

Justin Bieber adorably geeked out over the Walmart yodeling boy at Coachella, and there’s video to prove it

Justin Bieber adorably geeked out over the Walmart yodeling boy at Coachella, and there’s video to prove it

Justin Bieber adorably geeked out over the Walmart yodeling boy at Coachella, and there’s video to prove it

If you don’t know who Mason Ramsey is, you’re probably more familiar with his unofficial nickname: the Walmart yodeling boy. He’s an 11-year-old with a big cowboy hat and even bigger voice, and he recently rose to internet fame after a video of him singing at his local Walmart went viral on Twitter. Since then, the Walmart yodeling boy has been appearing all over the place. The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a kickass EDM remix, and even Coachella — where it seems Justin Bieber was pretty stoked to see him, according to reports.

Mason joined DJ Whethan on stage at Coachella on Friday, April 13th, and the audience went wild. And while Coachella crowds are always filled with celebs, Bieber looked especially psyched to watch Mason do his signature yodel.

Not only did Bieber appreciate Mason from the audience, he also went and met the Walmart yodeling boy backstage. Fan videos posted to Twitter show the Biebs dancing along during Mason’s performance and, later, sweetly asking the newly minted child star if this was his first Coachella.

After all, Mason and Bieber probably have more in common than you might think. Bieber started on the music scene when he was really young, too. He’s famously struggled with that early exposure, getting arrested for a DUI in 2014 and finding himself in some very tough times over the years. So, it’s not a stretch he’d want to be extra nice to someone in a similar position.

Then again, Mason’s yodeling is a far cry from pop music. Let’s hope his rise to fame goes a lot smoother!

Here’s Justin Bieber grinning from ear to ear during Mason’s performance and chatting with him afterwards:

We couldn’t be happier to see the Walmart yodeling boy take his talent to the big stage. We’re sure all of us (and Bieber) will be hearing much more from Mason in the near future.

There’s a Good Chance Game of Thrones Fans Will Never See This Character Again

Although Lord Edmure Tully hasn’t been seen on Game of Thrones since Jaime Lannister used him a pawn to conquer Riverrun, it seemed as though fans may still learn his fate in the show’s final season. However, according to Tobias Menzies—who played Catelyn Stark’s doltish younger brother—the chances of Edmure returning aren’t looking too good.

During a recent interview with Digital Spy, Menzies was asked whether his character is still spending his days locked away in the Frey’s dungeon since Arya Stark used her face-swapping skills to massacre the entire Frey family. “The honest answer is, I have no idea,” he replied. “He’s obviously somewhere in a prison, he’s still around alive somewhere. They’re pretty stingy with their information and I’ve not heard anything from them.”

There’s always the chance that Menzies is giving fans the ol’ Kit Harington run-around. However, considering the rest of the cast has been filming season eight for quite some time, if he is telling the truth, that’s probably a wrap on Edmure.

But not to worry, Menzies is still going to be gracing our television screens: Netflix announced Wednesday that the 44-year-old actor is set to take over the role of Prince Phillip from Matt Smith in season three of The Crown.

Exclusive: There’s a Place For Charlie Hunnam in ‘Pacific Rim 3’

We’ve already covered why Charlie Hunnam — who played hero Raleigh Becket in the first Pacific Rim movie — isn’t returning for sequel Pacific Rim Uprising, with another movie seemingly responsible.

However, while speaking to Steven DeKnight — writer-director of the big-budget follow-up — FANDOM discovered that we might not have seen the last of Raleigh.

DeKnight kicked off the conversation by expressing his sadness that a scheduling conflict with Hunnam’s Papillon movie meant that the British actor couldn’t reprise the role in Part Two.

“I love Charlie Hunnam” he explained. “I sat down and talked with him about what we were planning and he was excited about it. I think it broke his heart not to be able to come back now. But a man’s got to follow his passion.”

However, with DeKnight hoping that the second movie makes enough money to get a third off the ground, it sounds like the character of Raleigh Becket is front and centre in his mind.

Idris Elba (l) with Charlie Hunnam in the first Pacific Rim movie.

“We’ve left it open” he revealed. “I have a great idea for how to fold him back into the next instalment if he’s available and if the schedules work. So I’m really hoping he comes back because I would love to see Charlie Hunnam up onscreen opposite John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny.”

As for where the Becket character is while the events of Pacific Rim Uprising are unfolding, DeKnight wouldn’t spill the beans. “I cannot tell you” he explained with a knowing grin. “That’s part of the reveal of what happened to him. But I think it’s pretty cool.”

Do you hold your baby on your left hip? There’s a reason for it

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

There was really only one thing that came naturally to me after I gave birth to my son, and that was holding him on my left side. I snuggled him in the crook of my left arm, I rocked him with my left arm. And as he grew a little older, I slung him on my left hip and carried him around.

I hauled him around on my left side, even when that side of my lower back began to ache, even when it felt like I was squeezing part of my spine like an accordion.

A woman at the beach with a sun hat, her baby on her left side

Even my husband did it.

A Japanese man hold a baby on his left hip

It’s not just us.

It turns out 70 to 80 percent of women carry their babies on their left side, according to this study.

Remarkably, this is something that begins long before women ever give birth: “The bias appears prior to maternity and is demonstrated early in ontogeny; even preschool-age girls show a clear left preference when holding a doll the size and weight of a newborn baby,” the study says.

But why?

A study published earlier this month could hold the key. The Biology Letters journal says Pacific walruses and Indian flying foxes also show a significant bias toward the left side for mothers and their babies. The researchers studied those animals specifically because the mothers and babies in those two species are known to hang out both side-by-side as well as face-to-face.

The researchers hypothesize that mothers keep babies toward the left to aid in communications, since information from the left visual field is processed by the right hemisphere of the brain.

“[The] right hemisphere controls many aspects of social behaviour,” said Dr Andrey Giljov, co-author of the new research, in an interview with The Guardian. “Therefore, the greater right-hemisphere involvement provides optimal processing of social information.”

That, he adds, might help mothers and their offspring to notice and respond to the behavior of the other, since the right hemisphere of the brain is in charge of language and emotional signals and involved such tasks as the recognition of faces and emotions.

A woman in a green dress holds a toddler on her left hip.

So by holding your baby on your left side, you’re better able to see and understand what the child is doing. Being able to interpret baby’s cues and respond to their needs promotes bonding. And best of all, it’s totally natural!

But try telling that to my back the next time it starts creaking.

Do you carry your baby on the left or right side?

There’s now a Gucci restaurant and we can’t deal

Book a flight to Florence and head straight to the brand new Gucci emporium.

Words by Lisa Walden

Gucci have opened a brilliant concept store, 50-seat restaurant and museum called the ‘Gucci Garden’ in the heart of Florence, Italy. As well as including Gucci designs from the brand’s rich archives dating back to 1921, there will also be a lively and interactive video and film experience.

Designed by Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele, the rooms feel like you’ve been transported to a bygone era. Expect references to plants, flowers, animals, graffitied walls and must-have Gucci items — and gosh, there’s a lot of them. ‘The garden is real, but it belongs above all to the mind, populated with plants and animals: like the snake, which slips in everywhere, and in a sense, symbolises and perpetual beginning and a perpetual return,’ explains Michele.

Take a seat on the pillowy petrol-blue sofas and order the tortellini in parmesan sauce for a treat. Food is served on pretty porcelain plates, all of which are decorated in the brand’s iconic paisley print. Cotton napkins are crisp and embroidered like a Gucci shirt, and the table setting is as charming as the clothes themselves. The tucked-away restaurant seats around 50 guests so book your table fast to avoid disappointment.

Elsewhere, the ground floor is home to one-of-a-kind creations, designed especially for the Gucci Garden. Here you can buy silk bombers, custom jewellery, brocade skirts and bespoke luggage pieces you won’t find anywhere else (items come in packaging exclusive to the store so be sure to snap them up fast). The shop will also sell stationary, postcards, plates, cushions and maps of Florence for visitors to take home.

All of Gucci’s designers, past and present, have a space in the garden. “The past is very much part of the present at Gucci, which is perfectly in keeping with Alessandro’s idea of the brand, and indeed his attitude of Florence, Gucci’s home, which he sees as a city where history is still vibrantly alive,” explains critic and curator Maria Luisa Frisa, who worked with Alessandro on the store.

Artists Jayde Fish, Trever Andrew (AKA GucciGhost) and Coco Captian (who collaborated with the brand for their AW17 collection) were invited to decorate the walls of the rooms. Large pineapples painted with the Gucci logo, pizza slices, snakes and funny faces are drawn onto the wall in a playful and youthful touch. Don’t leave without taking a look at their work either, which is situated in the room nearby. We promise you won’t be disappointed.

Black Mirror’s Fourth Season Struggles Until There’s an Episode in Space. Seriously

It’s easy to tell tales about the near future—until it catches up with you. That’s the problem Black Mirror faces in its fourth season, which hits Netflix on Dec. 29. The twisty sci-fi anthology series, which first aired in the U.K. in 2011, still shares stories about technology and how it affects relationships. But imaginative, prescient stories are harder now. Reality in the late 2010s has been more creative in devising narrative turns than fiction could. As for prescience, if many are convinced there’s no future, who cares what the future’s tech looks like?

Sci-fi can serve as an escape when the future feels dark, but it can also seem a bit frivolous when its aperture is narrow. Several of the six episodes in the new season of Black Mirror stick to the show’s blueprint, focusing on how a specific technology affects a specific person or few people. The implications are meant to be chilling. For example, a technology that allows a parent to censor what her child sees produces a blinkered and angry young adult. But in the end, these stories end up seeming both more scolding than ever and perversely assuaging. In the near future Black Mirror depicts, there will still be helicopter parents, but they’ll leave the rest of us basically alone. An episode in which humanity is on the run from a dangerous technology we seem to have created ourselves is sketchily-drawn enough to be a momentary sort of comfort, too. If Charlie Brooker, the show’s seemingly endlessly inventive creator, can’t come up with a compelling way we’d end ourselves, maybe things aren’t so bad.

Of course, Black Mirror is in our world, sort of: “This isn’t an episode. This isn’t marketing. This is reality,” the show’s official account tweeted on election night 2016. But Black Mirror, despite one previous episode positing a future in which a literal cartoon character rose to political prominence, was generally stronger as a Twilight Zone-esque series of parables than a comment on what is actually happening in our world. Its statements resonated more sharply in a duller era. If the show wants to position itself as entirely of the moment, it has more work to do in meeting its viewers where they are, at a place where concern over what we’re doing to each other extends beyond implanted brain-modification technologies—and beyond the individual.

The season has bright spots: An episode about a dating technology whose control over its users can’t seem to erase the possibility of a real connection, scans a bit like an attempt to repeat the success of the dating-in-virtual-reality opus “San Junipero.” That episode’s depiction of two women whose romance pushed past the boundaries of time, reality and life in the closet provided Black Mirror a breakthrough moment of sorts, as even the most casual of fans swooned to the uncharacteristic earnestness. This time, the twist was the miracle of love. It was an episode that simultaneously engaged issues of the heart and the way technology has reshaped possibilities of what life can look like for all of us. “Hang the DJ” is no “San Junipero,” but the show may as well copy from its own best work.

But one episode this season has the imaginative power of Black Mirror at its best: “U.S.S. Callister.” The 1960s space serial features a large cast in a Star Trek-like fictional universe, all bubblegum colors and bright responses to the all-knowing Captain, who end up facing down existential threats. This episode makes the universe of Black Mirror seem more ambitious, and not merely because its characters are hurtling through space. It works because the show’s verve and its anger are reserved for something that’s happening right now—something that viewers understand as a threat more potent than imagined mechanical predators or mind-controlling implants.

In depicting not just a male villain consumed by his misogyny (Jesse Plemons) but the women who face him down (among them Cristin Milioti and Michaela Coel), the episode of a pessimistic show gives us not just a catastrophic future but real heroes fighting back. It also includes what makes people good, not just what’s making them worse. “U.S.S. Callister” feels ambitious and boundless, a rarity for the series. On a season in which Black Mirror drifts yet further away from many viewers’ real sense of dystopia, this dispatch from deep space will remind you of science fiction’s power to cut to the very heart of modern concerns.

There’s a FedEx holiday email scam going around — here’s what you should know

A seasonal email scam threatens to sour the holidays for a number of FedEx customers.

The fraudulent emails contain a subject line that reads: “FedEx: Delivery Problems Notification.” Any emails with that subject line should be discarded immediately, CBS affiliate WTOL 12 reports.

FedEx is warning customers that the scam is designed to trick last-minute holiday shoppers, according to WTOL. The emails ask recipients to open an attachment in order to view an invoice or airbill required to pick up the package, but the attachment may actually contain a virus.

Related article: FedEx is delivering packages on Christmas to make up for delays

“The frequency of this email tends to increase close to the holiday season, presumably to exploit the growth in shipping volumes,” FedEx says on its Customer Protection Center page. More examples of common email scams involving the deliverer can be found on the site.

MONEY has reached out the FedEx about this specific scam and will update the story if we receive a response.

There’s a story behind each ornament on every Christmas tree

by

Tara Shafer

posted in Parenting

I love trimming our tree and setting out ornaments even more than I love Christmas morning. I think too, that if my kids were able to be really honest, they would agree. The tree trimming hype is less in comparison to an orgy of gifts, but the magic is more.

Holiday decorating seems less prone to go down in the creeping anticlimax that naturally occurs as children grow up. My oldest grieves the memory of Santa faith, but still insists upon decorating the tree with absolute abandon. That never leaves him.

So, yes. My favorite thing about the holidays — hands down — are the decorations.

This year we were late to the tree. By the time my entire family was all together, it was late on a cold winter afternoon in mid-December and the blue early evening light unspooled everywhere. There was a fire and the kids had chosen a tree, a wreath, and centerpiece at our local tree farm.

Earlier, I had set out the ornaments, hauled up once more from the basement. Everything from the dates on the newspaper in which they are wrapped to the ornaments themselves are evocative.

I make it a point to buy an ornament in as many shops as possible over the course of a year. I’m the lady buying the Christmas ornament in July at a shack at the beach. (A tiny lobster pot, a Hershey’s Kiss). I have a bulb for most family vacations I’ve ever taken. I love the memories associated with each one.

What makes these ornaments so special?

Ornaments represent moments in time. They are an artery to kid nostalgia which is, maybe, the cutest thing ever. When a second grader finds a blue sparkly snowflake made in preschool and cradles it gently in her hands as she finds the right branch. “Oooh, I made this when I was just a kid!”

But there is more. Ornaments ripen somehow as the memories deepen. I have a collection of tiny plaster animals given to us by my eldest son’s godmother and my cousin. These ornaments once hung in the childhood home of my paternal grandmother, whom I adored. The daughter of a frugal Canadian prairie minister, my grandmother hung these very ornaments on her tree when she was the age of my daughter. I love to think of their hands resting on the same object nearly a century apart.

The completely random selection of ornaments is what makes it all so great. I have antiquities on my tree, together with popsicle-stick reindeer and all the rest. Nothing goes together. It is all just a chaotic explosion of things catching lights and reflections.

In contrast to the gift exchange moments, the few hours we spend trimming the tree are beautiful, and respectful. There is an air of quiet joy as children unwrap memories and hang them up in a display of light against darkness. In such moments, my little family feels safe and contained in the universe of a snow globe. And it only lasts for a few moments — but I’ll take it with gratitude.

What is your favorite decoration and what is the story there?

There’s an 80% Chance You’re Wearing the Wrong Shoes for Hiking

If you’re at all an outdoor person—and this may be especially true if you live in a place like L.A.)—you’ve gone on your fair share of hikes. But there’s a big difference between going for a casual walk through your local park and climbing over boulders to reach a mountain’s crest boils—not all hikes are made equally, and the same is true of the shoes you pick out for such an activity.

The common idea for hiking is that sneakers work best, and seeing as we wear sneakers for all other forms of exercise, why wouldn’t they be ideal for hiking as well? Actually, according to Stacy Taniguchi, Ph.D., a professor of recreation management at Brigham Young University, wearing sneakers on a hike may be putting you in unnecessary danger. Extreme conditions like dry, dusty trails, or muddy grounds make it that much more likely that you’ll slip and fall, especially along inclines. The fact is sneakers just provide enough traction.

The best shoes you really should be wearing on a hike? Heavy-duty, high-top hiking boots. Some details to look out for when purchasing the correct shoes are thick soles, heavy treads, ample support, and waterproof material, depending on which type of terrain you’ll be exploring.

Go on to shop the hiking boots that are tough enough for any terrain, and keep reading to shop our selection of luxury “hiking-inspired” bootsbecause we know you’re a fashion girl at heart.

Now There’s Only One Way to Get the Sold-Out Bag Meghan Markle Made Famous

In case you were wondering how influential Meghan Markle’s style is, let’s review the numbers. Earlier this month, Markle made her first royal appearance since the engagement announcement carrying a bag by Edinbugh-based brand Strathberry. According to the label, the bag sold out in 11 minutes across all international retailers, and resulted in a 5000% traffic increase on Strathberry’s website. Impressive right?

Now, the brand is taking its newfound attention and doing something to give back. Strathberry is auctioning off the last currently available bag to benefit the same charity Markle and Prince Harry were promoting that day: the Terrence Higgings Trust, which advocates for equality and justice for people living with HIV and AIDS. The auction begins today at 3 p.m. EST and runs through Sunday, December 17 and you can make bids on the brand’s website

If you’re willing to wait, however, Strathberry is doing another round of production for the bag soon—keep your eyes peeled.

There’s No Way Stephen Colbert Was Going to Let Trump’s Water Break Slide

On Wednesday night’s episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert wanted to welcome President Donald Trump back from Asia with a drink, but couldn’t quite manage the feat.

Colbert’s gag was yet another person poking fun at the president for his water-drinking method, which he put on display when he, as The Late Show captioned their video, “took a break mid-speech Wednesday to wet his dog whistle.”

Colbert aired a clip of the president’s press conference, which Trump paused in order to take a two-handed drink from a bottle of water. “That is hard to watch,” Colbert said, adding, “After watching that, I need a drink.” Colbert then imitated the president’s sip of water. While the audience laughed, Colbert noted that “everybody gets dry mouth”, so it wasn’t fair to tease a politician for staying hydrated. “I can’t stand here and make fun of a politician for drinking water,” said Colbert. “And Trump already did it way better with Rubio.” Colbert then aired a clip of Trump mocking Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for drinking water during his State of the Union response in 2013.

Rubio got his revenge on Trump, though, rating the president’s water-drinking technique, as a means of karmic retribution.

On National STEM Day, there’s still a lot of work to do for women

TwitterFacebook

It’s National STEM day, and that means yet another reminder that women are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math.

As educators mark their field’s national holiday, LinkedIn isn’t letting us forget one of the core problems facing STEM students and professionals.

The jobs site looked at gender representation across college degrees and across software and IT, healthcare, and finance—all STEM-heavy fields.

“In honor of National STEM Day, we looked at how women around the globe are faring in STEM-heavy industries—software and IT, healthcare, and finance. This included looking over the past 10 years on what women studied in university to ultimately land them in their respective careers,” LinkedIn wrote in a blog post. “What we found was that the gap starts early. While women are pursuing degrees relevant to STEM fields, they are severely underrepresented amongst graduates with technical degrees, and there is a high demand for more women in STEM fields.”  Read more…

It looks like there’s another celebrity baby to get excited about for 2018

Congratulations are definitely in order…

eddie redmayne second baby

From the editors of InStyle US
Words by Jennifer Davis

It’s definitely the year for celebrity babies, with pregnancy announcements emerging left, right and centre.

This week it’s a big congratulations for Eddie Redmayne! He and his wife Hannah are expecting their second child together, according to E! News.

Rex

‘Eddie and Hannah Redmayne are delighted to confirm they are expecting their second child,’ the actor’s rep told the entertainment news outlet. The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star and his wife welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Iris May Redmayne, in June 2016.

No word yet on when baby number two is due, but we expect the family is overjoyed with the news, especially Redmayne, who gushed about being a father last year on Ellen. ‘Before you’re a parent, you sort of hear people talking about [not getting any sleep] and suddenly you’re the guy who’s like floating in a sort of constant jet lag with a constant IV of caffeine. So yes, I’ve become that person. It’s worth every minute,’ he said.

‘It’s that amazing thing when it’s three o’clock in the morning and you go in and you’re sort of gently furious and then you get a little smile and your heart breaks a bit, and it’s totally worth it.’

Congratulations to these two!

Matt Damon Says There’s a Reason Donald Trump Has So Many Movie Cameos

Donald Trump may not appear in 1992’s Scent of a Woman, but he reportedly shot a scene for it.

According to Matt Damon, one of the requirements for filming at a Trump-owned building such as the Plaza Hotel is writing Trump himself into the movie. However, Trump’s cameo apparently didn’t make the final cut in director Martin Brest’s coming-of-age drama.

“The deal was that if you wanted to shoot in one of his buildings, you had to write him in a part,” Damon recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “Martin Brest had to write something in Scent of a Woman — and the whole crew was in on it. You have to waste an hour of your day with a bulls—t shot: Donald Trump walks in and Al Pacino’s like, ‘Hello, Mr. Trump!’ — you had to call him by name — and then he exits. You waste a little time so that you can get the permit, and then you can cut the scene out. But I guess in Home Alone 2 they left it in.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Trump has appeared in a number of television shows, movies and commercials.

This website will notify you if there’s unclaimed money in your name

If you’ve been following money expert Clark Howard for a while, you’ve probably heard him talk about billions of dollars in unclaimed money — and how some of it may be yours!

I recently shared how I searched my name on MissingMoney.com and got a check for $ 36.77 from a state where I used to live.

Credit Karma can help you find missing money!

How is that possible? When a business owes you money but can’t get it to you, they will turn it over to the state, which will hold the money and keep a record that it belongs to you.

You can usually collect the money that’s owed to you pretty easily — like I did — but you have to know where to look.

Credit Karma has just launched Credit Karma Unclaimed Money, a free feature to help Americans in the following states get their money back — no finder’s fees or charges.

California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin

Simply enter your name and state (current and previous) on Credit Karma’s website to get started.

Unclaimed money from bank accounts, insurance policies, rental and utility deposits, safe deposit boxes and other places make up an estimated $ 40 billion sitting with state governments.

Here are just a few examples of unclaimed money:

  • A check you forgot to cash
  • Money left in an inactive bank account
  • A rebate check mailed to an old address

If your state isn’t on Credit Karma’s list, you can also search at MissingMoney.com — the site I used — or find a link to every state’s unclaimed property program at Unclaimed.org.

To collect money that’s in your name, you’ll have to fill out a form with the state and provide proof of identity.

Credit Karma says if you have a free account with them, they’ll proactively send a notification if there are any future matches for you in the states its program works with.

If Carmelo really wants to leave Knicks, there’s a way to ensure it

On the one hand, it is perfectly understandable why Carmelo Anthony feels he should be entitled to drive the agenda now. For months he sat in stony silence while his name and reputation were bloodied by his ex-boss. He was determined to win his cold war with Phil Jackson. And won it. Now, he wants…

O.J. Simpson’s Sister: ‘There’s No Reason Why’ He Should’t Be Paroled This Year

O.J. Simpson’s sister Shirley Baker is optimistic that her notorious sibling will be released from prison sometime this year, as he comes up for parole nearly 10 years after being found guilty in an armed robbery.

A parole hearing date is set for July 20 and Simpson could be released as early as October.

“There’s no reason why not,” Baker said in an interview with Inside Edition that aired Tuesday.

“He’s there, he’s doing his time, he abided by the rules,” she said. “And I just hope and pray that they will give him parole.”

Simpson — who was acquitted in the 1994 double slayings of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman (for which he was later found civilly responsible) — was convicted in 2008 for his role in the armed robbery and kidnapping of two sports-memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room.

The 69-year-old former football star claimed he was trying to get back keepsakes that had been stolen from him and that he had no idea his accomplices were carrying weapons.

But the jury found differently, and he was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison in Nevada.

During the Inside Edition interview, Baker said she talks to Simpson every week by phone and visits him in prison four times a year. She said that guards even have a nickname for him: “Nordberg,” after his role in the Naked Gun film series.

The family of Ronald Goldman has also spoken out this year about the possibility of Simpson’s early release. His sister told Good Morning America in February, “He did a horrible, heinous crime and I have no feeling except rot in hell.”

There’s Going To Be A ‘Working Girl’ Musical With Songs By Cyndi Lauper

As if it’s not enough to be the first solo woman to win the Tony Award for best score for “Kinky Boots,” pop icon Cyndi Lauper will write the score for a musical based on the 1988 hit film “Working Girl,” it was announced on Tuesday.

Playwright Kim Rosenstock, who was a writer on the show “New Girl” for six seasons, will write the book for the musical.

The Oscar-nominated film tells the story of a Staten Island secretary played by Melanie Griffith who is trying to make it in the male-dominated corporate world.

“I love the film, and its story about a woman’s very unconventional road to success in the ’80s is something I know a lot about,” Lauper said in a statement to The New York Times. “Women are still fighting for fundamental rights and equal pay!”

‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ May Be Game Of The Year — But There’s One Big Problem

arkhamknight

Batman attempts to deactivate an exploding collar on Catwoman in “Arkham Knight.”

Months after GamerGate first set video game culture ablaze with unbelievable resistance to the idea of feminist perspectives in the gaming industry, we have a new title that features some of the most compelling female characters in pop culture. “Batman: Arkham Knight,” which came out Tuesday, spotlights Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Oracle and Harley Quinn in major roles. But while these women are often represented as strong, independent and able in other media, their featured roles here often tell a different story: They are damsels in distress.

Many, many people will play this game, if previous entries are any indication. The last main title in the series, which has a couple of spinoffs, sold over 5 million copies. And that aside, “Arkham Knight” is actually an exceptional game taken on its own merits: It is devoted to a cohesive aesthetic and narrative in a way few other games are, the set pieces are compelling and it’s brimming with things to do. One moment you’ll be studying the microscopic details of a crime scene, and five minutes later you’re dodging drone fire in the middle of a populated city street. It all feels crunchy and good.

“Arkham Knight” will likely earn accolades as one of the standout titles of the year — it already holds a 91 on Metacritic — and that is precisely why its sins should not be ignored.

(Note: The text that follows contains some spoilers for the storyline in “Arkham Knight.”)

poison ivy
Poison Ivy appears in “Arkham Knight” with a barely-there shirt and a mossy crotch.

It’s really no big secret that gaming and tech are male-dominated industries, even if consumers are split basically down the middle in terms of gender. Plenty of people will play “Arkham Knight” and probably ignore its oftentimes troubling presentation of women — perhaps that’s simply because the game is exciting, and as soon as you settle into a moment, something explodes and you’re off to something else.

But others will play the game and feel offended. Or disgusted. Or threatened. Or simply unwelcome. Even if those people were outnumbered 100 to 1 in a population of 5 million customers, it would be worthwhile to examine why and do better next time. Because here’s the trouble with “Arkham Knight”: It is a great game tarnished by its dreadful depictions of certain characters and situations.

arkham knight
Poison Ivy is held hostage in “Arkham Knight.”

The baseline problem with “Arkham Knight” is that instead of taking opportunities to depict strong women, the game makes them weak. For the most part, the female characters suck.

When you first come upon Poison Ivy early in the story, she has a gun to her head. You rescue her, and then you lock her in the back of the Batmobile and drag her to police headquarters. Later in the game, Batman determines that Ivy can communicate with — literally — a big old tree that could counteract the effects of a chemical weapon that Scarecrow intends to detonate somewhere in Gotham City. So Batman hauls his way back to lockup and drags her back to the Batmobile like she’s a petulant child. Poison Ivy is basically a power-up for the player to collect, like a mushroom in “Super Mario.”

She is barely wearing clothes throughout the entire ordeal.

arkham knight
“Arkham Knight” recreates a troubling scene from “The Killing Joke” in which Barbara Gordon is shot and paralyzed by the Joker.

Catwoman, often portrayed as Batman’s equal, fares no better. Like Ivy, her storyline begins in custody. Her outfit is unzipped enough to show a massive slice of cleavage. Why? Because Catwoman is “sexy” and it’s apparently hard to portray sexiness without showing boob?

The Riddler has strapped her to a chair, and Batman is called to rescue her. You arrive on the scene and find that there’s an entire ordeal required to free her: Riddler has fitted her with a choker that will explode unless you deactivate a number of locks. The gameplay sometimes has Batman and Catwoman working together — you can switch between them at points — but the pattern almost invariably requires Batman to complete some feat of cunning, force and reflexes while Catwoman bums around in a locked chamber. Her liberation is essentially a prize for you, the player.

Things are absolutely worst for Oracle, a hero in a wheelchair who assists Batman remotely. To detail her storyline would reveal much about the largest plot points in “Arkham Knight,” but things do not go well for her. An incredibly problematic storyline from the comic books is retread in vivid detail: She is abducted and maimed and exists almost entirely in this context to stir angst in the featured male characters. Batman, Robin, Commissioner Gordon and Alfred fret over her like a baby missing from the crib.

harley quinn
Harley Quinn steps up.

These are not failures from a gameplay perspective. But they are artistic missteps, awful quirks that will make this game — and perhaps all video games by extension — seem incredibly stupid to any critical thinker who may have thought to give “Arkham Knight” a try.

This game does not exist in a vacuum. It arrives at a moment when women are still being shut out of the gaming and tech industries to the point where many are even looking for work elsewhere. It is bizarre that “Arkham Knight” both includes many women and diminishes them so plainly.

All of that said, there are some important caveats. First: Harley Quinn — Joker’s deranged on-again, off-again girlfriend — is actually kind of cool this time around. Her character design in “Arkham City” (NSFW) was incredibly sexualized and seemingly intended purely for the male gaze. (For an interesting discussion of this very topic, listen to episode 58 of the lovely “Isometric” podcast.)

Here, Harley Quinn’s decked out in a pretty serious tutu and barks orders at a bunch of armed dudes. She’s more covered than not. The whole thing struck me as fairly whimsical and a step in the right direction, even if it’s not a perfect representation.

And no one can argue that the comic book source material is free from cheesecake. There are, in fact, many comics featuring these characters that are several orders of magnitude more sexist than “Arkham Knight.” Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn in particular are often exploited for sexy fluff, as this page from “Harley and Ivy #2” shows. It’s by the great Paul Dini and Bruce Timm:

poison ivy

But there’s a major difference between this comic and something like “Arkham Knight” — something that maybe isn’t so obvious. This Poison Ivy could be appealing to men and women alike. The entire miniseries is devoted to Harley and Ivy wreaking havoc on their own terms — it’s “sexy” more than “sexist.” They actively and successfully strike back against the forces that oppress them. They aren’t seeking the approval of men, and they certainly don’t need a player to rescue them.

And not that we need an eye for an eye, but the two ladies also take a second to objectify some dudes in the third issue:

harley and ivy

It’s ostensibly fun for everyone. And that’s what we could use a little more of in these games.

There’s Only One Real Difference Between Liberals and Conservatives

Your crazy old divorced uncle is a Conservative. Your crazy young divorced aunt is a Liberal.

Liberals are concerned about economic inequality. Conservatives are confident that one day they’ll be rich.

Conservatives vote. Liberals don’t vote, but they urge their fellow like-minded liberals to get involved.

Liberals are honest about the complex issue of race. Conservatives “don’t see color.”

Conservatives don’t want to hear liberal Hollywood celebrities talk about politics. Liberals also don’t want to hear liberal Hollywood celebrities talk about politics.

Conservatives are enamored with conservative Hollywood celebrities who talk about politics. Liberals don’t know who those celebrities are. “You know- Nick Searcy. You’ve seen him. He’s on that show Justified. You know- Justified. It’s on FX. Well, I’m sure you’d know him if you saw him.”

Liberals are pro-choice. Conservatives had an abortion years ago, but now they’ve seen the light and don’t think other people should be allowed to have one.

Conservatives celebrate Christianity. Liberals celebrate Christmas.

Conservatives vote against their own self-interest. Liberals vote in the interest of their own self-loathing.

Liberals support good teachers. Conservatives support eliminating bad teachers.

Conservatives oppose violent Islamic extremism and the homophobic, misogynistic, oppressive ideals that it represents. Liberals oppose Israel.

Liberals, for the most part, support the Democratic Party platform of fair taxation, equal rights, and job creation. Conservatives, for the most part, support the Democratic Party platform of fair taxation, equal rights, and job creation.

Conservatives support free speech. Liberals support free speech unless it’s politically incorrect.

Conservatives watch FOX News for their news. Liberals watch FOX News for laughs. Both Conservatives and Liberals think that CNN is horrible. Nobody watches MSNBC.

Conservatives hate soccer. Liberals love soccer once every four years.

Liberals benefit from Obamacare and are disappointed with it. Conservatives benefit from Obamacare and want to get rid of it.

Conservatives watch race car driving for the crashes. Liberals would watch race car driving if there were more crashes.

Conservatives have lost interest in Sarah Palin. Liberals are still obsessed with her.

Liberals love having sex. Conservatives hate when other people have sex.

Conservatives try to get their Liberal Facebook friends to see the light. Liberals try to find out which of their Facebook friends is Conservative so that they can de-friend them.

Conservatives are disappointed with President Obama because he’s too liberal. Liberals are disappointed with President Obama because he’s not liberal enough. Moderates are disappointed with President Obama, though they can’t put their finger on why exactly.

Liberals believe in global warming because of the scientific data. Conservatives don’t believe in global warming because it felt a little nippy this morning.

Conservatives believe that we can stop global crimes against humanity though the use of military force. Liberals believe that we can stop global crimes against humanity by tweeting #StopGlobalCrimesAgainstHumanity.

Conservatives think that corporations create jobs. Liberals think that corporations create jobs in China.

Liberals think it takes a village to raise a child. Conservatives think it takes a family to raise a child. Children are actually being raised by TV, video games, and the Internet.

Conservatives think that unemployed people are responsible for the nation’s problems. Liberals think that unemployment is a result of the nation’s problems.

Conservatives support old-fashioned, traditional values. Liberals are into being edgy. Conservatives think that being edgy is lame… which it is.

Liberals oppose police brutality. Conservatives oppose police brutality unless the unarmed suspect appears “thuggish.”

Conservatives listen to new country music on the radio. Liberals listen to real country music — like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson — on their iPhones.

Conservatives think schools should teach abstinence in high school health class. Liberals think schools should hand out free condoms in elementary school.

Liberals are funny. Conservatives are corny.

Conservatives are organized, reliable and polite. Liberals think that being disorganized, unreliable, and rude is part of their “charm.”

Liberals have a black friend. Conservatives know a black guy.

Liberals support people in menial jobs. Conservatives applaud people in menial jobs. People in menial jobs just want to be respected.

Conservatives don’t think they are homophobic because they started supporting gay marriage in 2012. Liberals know they’re not homophobic because they started supporting gay marriage in 2007.

Conservatives believe in God. Liberals believe that God created evolution.

Conservatives can’t name three judges on the Supreme Court. Liberals can’t name three judges on the Supreme Court. Both Conservatives and Liberals can name three cast members from Jersey Shore.

Liberals have a weak stance on immigration. Conservatives have a strong stance on immigration… but it’s evolving.

Conservatives are proudly uninformed. Liberals are proud to be informed about issues that nobody cares about.

Liberals are involved in sex scandals that ruin their career. Conservatives are involved in sex scandals that they get away with.

Conservatives support issues that help their families. Liberals support issues that help families.

Liberals love that the world of college academia is a place to share ideas. Conservatives hate that the world of college academia is a place where they can’t share their ideas. College students love that the world of college academia is a place where they can drink and have sex.

Conservatives support the troops by saying that they support the troops. Liberals say that saying you support the troops is not really supporting the troops.

Conservatives like movies with action, violence and lots of explosions. Liberals like movies with action, violence lots of explosions, and characters we can care about.

Liberals believe in some elements of socialism. Conservatives hate socialism and they only believe in some elements of it.

Conservatives have a problem with women. Liberals have a problem with Conservative women.

Conservatives are friendlier than Liberals. Liberals are nicer than Conservatives.

Conservatives don’t want to be blamed for Ted Nugent. Liberals don’t want to be blamed for Rosie O’Donnell. Nobody wants to be blamed for the Kardashians.

Conservatives believe in the death penalty for all the people on death row. Liberals are opposed to the death penalty because they believe all the people on death row are poor.

Conservatives are more physically attractive than Liberals, but Liberals are sexier.

Liberals have a better personality than Conservatives, but they’re condescending about it… which is an ugly personality trait.

Liberals don’t trust the media unless it’s “alternative” media because if it’s “alternative,” it must be trustworthy. Conservatives don’t trust the media because the media they watch and listen to tells them not to trust the media.

Liberal billionaires use their money to support worthy causes. Conservative billionaires use their money to support Conservative causes.

Liberals show their compassion by helping others. Conservatives think they are showing compassion by not helping others.

Conservatives are afraid of not having guns. Liberals are afraid of Conservatives with guns.

Conservatives love the past but fear the future. Liberals hate the past but fear the future.

Liberals are full of crap because they don’t really believe what they say. Conservatives are full of crap because they truly believe what they say.

There are good Liberals and bad Liberals. There are good Conservatives and bad Conservatives. Serial killers are apolitical.

Liberals like to have fun. Conservatives like to have fun. Liberals and Conservatives like to have fun with each other… unless they’re talking about politics… or especially when they’re talking about politics.
