‘Drag Race’: A Frontrunner Falls and a Feud Is Formed in Dramatic Third Episode

Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from Episode 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10. Proceed with caution.

From the moment Yuhua Hamasaki was picked last for a team on Episode 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, she was on a downward spiral that revealed many flaws and weaknesses that she managed to keep hidden up until this point. Meanwhile, Mayhem Miller won the first challenge of Season 10, and yet she was picked second-to-last for the second week in a row. And it is ultimately both these queens who are forced to lip sync for their lives by the end of the episode. But let’s start at the beginning.

RuPaul's Drag Race Mayhem Yuhua
Mayhem and Yuhua lip sync on 'Drag Race'

The queens are broken into three teams for this week’s challenge, which finds them creating commercials for faux dating apps. Monét makes it clear from the beginning that she was “stuck with Yuhua” and we soon see why she feels that way.

Yuhua struggled with understanding basic concepts and insisted that she was creating an ugly mug for her team’s Madam Butterface app, despite clearly painting on pretty golden eyebrows and lovely dots everywhere. And when her teammates tried to step in, she shouted at them to stop screaming at her (which they were not).

Meanwhile over on Team Fibstr, Mayhem volunteered to be the narrator but Kameron eventually asked if she could take the role since she wrote all the narrator’s lines. Mayhem reluctantly agreed and then proceeded to pout about not getting the part she wanted.

And instead of making the most of her part during the commercial shoot, she seemed to just give up, somehow deciding that the role of a dominatrix couldn’t be funny. And so, she wasn’t.

The rest of the episode featured comical moments (Monique directing herself by saying, “3, 2, 1, action” before every take. Blair saying it’s hard to be there without her mom while looking like a literal five-year-old) and drama (Aquaria and Vixen clashing several times throughout the episode, making it clear that their feud is far from over).

So, after a feather-themed runway and the viewing of the commercial parodies, it’s Blair, Eureka, and Asia on top, with Mayhem, Kameron, and Yuhua on the bottom. Mayhem claimed she knew this was her fate, basically admitting that she was being too nice to complain about the role switch and assuming there was no way she could make the most out of her new part.

Asia won the week’s challenge, thanks to her hilarious face contortions in the main challenge, and Mayhem and Yuhua were forced to lip sync to Hole’s “Celebrity Skin.” Ms. Miller took the opportunity to remind us all why she was a frontrunner in the first place, giving a fiery performance that found her passionately ripping the feathers out of her dress.

And so, Yuhua was forced to sashay away, while Mayhem lived to see another day. It was a jam-packed episode that reminded us that Season 10 is not messing around. And there was just as much happening in Untucked after the main episode, but we’ll unpack all that drama in tomorrow’s power rankings and interview with Yuhua.

‘Psycho Pass’: How a Third Season Could Improve the Series

Psycho-Pass is arguably one of the best anime of the 21st century. The psychological crime drama won fans over with its focus on societal issues, technological advancement, and, of course, its main leads. Unfortunately, its second season left both fans and critics disappointed.

From its lack of character development to its uncreative plot, Psycho-Pass‘s second season is a shell of its former self. With a film trilogy recently announced for the anime, we can only hope that a third season is soon to follow. Here’s how a potential third season could improve upon Psycho-Pass‘ subpar second season.

The Return of Gen Urobuchi

Psycho-Pass 2 characters

Gen Urobuchi, the man responsible for Psycho-Pass season one and the movie sequel, unfortunately, wasn’t involved in season two. Urobuchi’s trademark world-building and exploration of societal issues were replaced with Tow Ubukata‘s own vision for the dystopian anime.

Based on his previous work, Ubukata seemed like the obvious choice. Not only did he create one of the best cyberpunk anime ever, Mardock Scramble, but he was also in charge of creating the latest anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell.

However, by the time the second season of Psycho-Pass finished airing, it was apparent that Ubukata and Psycho-Pass were not a perfect match. The second season abandons the themes that Urobuchi built. Instead of expanding on the moral dilemma between ethical and lawful actions, we get something mentally unstimulating.

Psycho Pass screenshot

There’s no denying that there’s violence in Psycho-Pass. Just one push on the Dominator can send body parts flying left and right. But the violence in season two isn’t a consequence but a goal.

Nearly every confrontation involves blood, limbs and an uncountable number of victims. The destructiveness doesn’t contribute to or even expand the narrative not its theme of morality. Psycho-Pass‘ second season is violent for the sake of violence, and there’s nothing thought-provoking about that.

For the series to return to its former dystopian glory, Urobuchi should return to pen season three. But he shouldn’t stick to the same themes. Fans don’t want a rehash of season one. The sequel should go beyond cybernetic psychopaths controlling a country. Instead, asking the question: What happens when citizens find out the horrifying truth about their country?

A Morally Complex Main Villain

Shogo Makishima from Psycho-Pass

At the center of Psycho-Pass is the Sybil System, a hive mind consisting of hundreds of people. It’s the task of the collective to scan and determine the crime coefficient of everyone in Japan. From assigning jobs to the eliminating undesirables, Sybil is the nation’s Big Brother. But, the system has a huge flaw. It’s unable to scan asymptomatic criminals, people who can stay calm in any situation.

One of those people is Shogo Makishima, who rejects the notion of the orderly society that Sybil wants to create. He believes people should not suppress their true selves. However, he doesn’t feel remorse for his actions, which include manipulating others into doing his bidding and killing innocent bystanders. His charisma, lack of guilt, and deceptively weak build make him a fan favorite.

Psycho-Pass 2 villain Kirito Kamui

The same can’t be said for season two’s antagonist, Kirito Kamui. Since his body is composed of the body parts of 184 different people, he is able to go undetected by the scanners and Dominators. A combination of hue-lowering drugs and psychotherapy made Kamui a formidable villain, at least for the first few episodes.

As the story progresses, we learn more about Kamui. The deeper we go, the less realistic he becomes. We’re just supposed to accept that his Frankensteinian body and access to a good drug dealer are the only reasons he’s unscannable. He lacks the subtle intricacies and originality that Makishima brought to the show previously — and he’s not as evil.

If we do get a season three, we need a main antagonist that has the smarts to exploit the Sybil System without using cheap tricks. The perfect villain would be intelligent and able to manipulate others. This individual should be able to destroy Akane Tsunemori’s sense of justice, forcing her to become an Enforcer.

Investing in Characters

Mika from Psycho-Pass

Psycho-Pass’ second season introduced a plethora of characters without giving them backstories or motivations for their actions. They simply existed to fill a hole or to support the main character. Some they wanted us to instantly hate, like Mika Shimotsuki, and others were meant to hint at something sinister like Sakuya Togane.

A new season would give the anime a chance to properly introduce main and supporting characters and give their actions clear meaning. Finally, these characters would not only have (un)likeable traits but a backstory worth investing in. One that tells us how their past dictates their future actions.

Psycho-Pass Shion Karanomori

A third season could also shake things up a bit by focusing more on its LGBT couple, Shion Karanomori and Yayoi Kunizuka. The series has only touched upon them briefly, but the depiction of their relationship is far from stereotypical. For instance, when Akane walks in on the couple, she doesn’t turn red from embarrassment or childishly overreact as seen in other anime.

Psycho-Pass, rightfully, treats their relationship just as it would any other couple’s. It isn’t used as a gimmick or few laughs. It’s their unique abilities as an Analyst and an Enforce that take center stage, not their sexual orientation. By honing in on these characters more in a sequel, Psycho-Pass could push the boundaries when it comes to the depiction of LGBT characters and relationships in anime.

More Action and Even More Suspense

Psycho-Pass Akane Tsunemori holding a Dominator

For a police drama series, season two didn’t have much action. However, what it lacks in fighting it makes up for in suspense, well partly. On paper, the series had a great overall premise, but, on screen, it fell short. Yet, one of its subplots delivered the suspense that fans crave from Psycho-Pass.

From the start, Sakuya Togane is a shady character, but his role in the main story falls flat. The Togane family subplot didn’t add much to the main story. It seemed to be a separate plot. Instead of supporting the main plot, it worked against it, as many fans felt Togane’s twisted past (and present) should have been the central plot in the second season.

Misako Togane from Psycho-Pass

This subplot expanded on the first season’s themes of ethical vs. lawful acts, which fit in with what fans had come to expect from the series. Misako Togane experiments on her son in hopes of creating an asymptomatic criminal. But her experiment fails, producing the opposite result. Sakuya Togane now has the highest crime coefficient on record. (Talk about having the odds stacked against you.)

Although he is unable to lower his hue, he can turn Inspectors into latent criminals. Eventually, he becomes Akane’s Enforcer and tries to cloud her Psycho-Pass, as well. That’s a far more interesting story than a guy who goes undetected by cheating the system.

Bringing the Past Into the Future

Shinya from Psycho-Pass

For season three, Production I.G should combine the action from season one with the suspense from season two. One way they could do this is to have season one’s lead, Shinya Kogami, return to join the force. Akane lacks the physical combat abilities of Kogami. His presence could result in an Akane who is more trigger happy and impulsive when fending off attackers. Shinya and Akane’s dynamic paired with a complex villain would be enough to take the anime to new heights.

“This Is Us” just introduced a THIRD TIMELINE, and honestly I am screaming

“This Is Us” just introduced a THIRD TIMELINE, and honestly I am screaming

Well, This Is Us finally did it — they killed Jack. In a heartbreaking and emotional episode, we saw everything about Jack’s death play out on screen, from the fire, to the ambulance, to the hospital, to Rebecca breaking down following the news of her husband’s death. And while that’s sad, and certainly got a lot of tears out of us, the episode also featured a moment of HAPPY tears, as we jumped into the future at the close of the episode.

Omg, did This Is Us just introduce a *third timeline* into the show? It sure looks like they did, and listen, I am here for it.

While the family grapples with Jack’s death, Randall is off busy *celebrating* his dad, and also trying to throw a Super Bowl party for his little girls. Beth happens to notice that the phone keeps coming off the hook, and she’s like “what the hell, kids.” It doesn’t take much to put two and two together for us to realize that it’s Tess who’s taking the phone off the hook, because she doesn’t want the social worker to call and send them another foster kid. Though she came to really love and appreciate Deja in the end, Tess doesn’t want Randall to love anyone more than her.

Randall sits Tess down and explains to her that there’s no way he can love anyone more than her, because he loves her so much — “You my Number 1, baby girl. You’re the girl that made my life somersault.” Hold on, crying over this a lot.

Throughout the episode, we’re led to believe that the Pearsons are about to get another new foster kid, a little boy named Jordan  (who looks like a little Randall, and this seems like fate). However, the end of the episode reveals that the social worker with Jordan  is not someone random, but Adult Tess. Even Older Randall shows up to see his daughter at work with the foster kids, because it turns out that Tess likes fostering, and clearly seeing the positive impact it had on her own family, she decides to do that with her own life.

NBC

Also let’s just take a second to appreciate Sterling K. Brown as Even Older Randall, and like, is there any age this man WON’T look good?

This might have been a one-off thing, or maybe it really is a brand new timeline that This Is Us is going to start exploring. Honestly, if it means more Even Older Randall and Adult Tess adventures (and times to cry) we’re here for it.

Flu Widespread Across US For Third Straight Week

NEW YORK (AP) — Sick with the flu? You’ve got a lot of company.

The flu blanketed the U.S. again last week for the third straight week. Only Hawaii has been spared.

Last week, 1 in 15 doctor visits were for symptoms of the flu. That’s the highest level since the swine flu pandemic in 2009. The government doesn’t track every flu case but comes up with estimates; one measure is how many people seek medical care for fever, cough, aches and other flu symptoms.

Flu is widespread in every state except Hawaii, and 39 states reported high flu traffic for doctors last week, up from 32.

At this rate, by the end of the season somewhere around 34 million Americans will have gotten sick from the flu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

Some good news: Hospital stays and deaths from the flu among the elderly so far haven’t been as high as in some other recent flu seasons. However, hospitalization rates for people 50 to 64 — baby boomers, mostly — has been unusually high, CDC officials said in the report, which covers the week ending Jan. 20.

This year’s flu shot targets the strains that are making Americans sick, mostly the H3N2 flu virus. But exactly how well it is working won’t be known until next month. It’s the same main bug from last winter, when the flu season wasn’t so bad. It’s not clear why this season — with the same bug — is worse, some experts said.

“That’s the kicker. This virus really doesn’t look that different from what we saw last year,” said Richard Webby, a flu researcher at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

It may be that many of the people getting sick this year managed to avoid infection last year. Or there may be some change in the virus that hasn’t been detected yet, said the CDC’s Dr. Dan Jernigan, in a call with reporters Friday.

Based on patterns from past seasons, it’s likely the flu season will start to wane soon, experts say. There are some places, like California, where the season already seems to be easing, CDC officials said.

“If I was a betting man, I’d put money on it going down,” Webby said. “But I’ve lost money on bets before.”

The season usually peaks in February, but this season started early and took off in December.

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness. It can cause a miserable but relatively mild illness in many people, but more a more severe illness in others. Young children and the elderly are at greatest risk from flu and its complications. In a bad season, there as many as 56,000 deaths connected to the flu.

In the U.S., annual flu shots are recommended for everyone age 6 months or older. Last seasons, about 47 percent of Americans got vaccinated, according to CDC figures.

California is the first state to officially recognize a third gender

California is the first state to officially recognize a third gender

Though California is currently dealing with still-raging wildfires, the government made time for gender rights. California Governor Jerry Brown signed the Gender Recognition Act on October 15th, which gives transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people the opportunity to select a third gender option on California state-issued IDs, like driver’s licenses and birth certificates. As Equality California noted, this bill makes California the first U.S. state to not require people to identify as male or female on official documents and is a major milestone for the LGBTQ+ community.

California Senators Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) authored this landmark bill, SB 179. “It will keep California at the forefront of LGBTQ civil rights,” Atkins said at a news conference when they proposed the bill in January 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Along with having a third option for gender on government IDs, the Gender Recognition Act will make it easier for people to change their gender on existing documents. It will also allow people 18 years old or younger to apply to change their gender on their birth certificates.

While the legal recognition of a third gender in the U.S. is relatively new, Esquire noted that countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Thailand, and the U.K. have already enacted or have started to consider bills like these.

It’s also important to note that California isn’t the only state to take steps to better represent nonbinary people. (The new California law defines “nonbinary” as an “umbrella term for people with gender identities that fall somewhere outside of the traditional conceptions of strictly either female or male,” according to The Sacramento Bee.) The state of Oregon became the first state to offer a third option for gender on its driver’s licenses. NBC reported that New York and Washington, D.C. also proposed bills that offered a third sex on driver’s licenses and ID cards.

With states like California and Oregon leading the way, there’s hope that the rest of the country will follow in making the U.S. a more inclusive nation for all.

Just one third of cast members in British films are women – less than in 1913, new figures show

WHEN you sit down to watch a British film, on average less than a third of the cast will be female – and there’s a decent chance one of them will be Dame Judi Dench.

This male-female ratio has barely changed in 100 years, according to the British Film Institute, which has created a new database of UK movie stats at filmography.bfi.org.uk.

James Bond, portrayed here by Sean Connery, is the joint most featured character in British film along with Queen Victoria

While the records show a fascination with Queen Victoria, the news is not so good for women working in the business.

The 19th century monarch, played twice by Dench, has been portrayed in as many films as the fictional spy James Bond.

But the stats back up claims that sexism is entrenched in movies. In 1913, 31 per cent of the cast in all the movies made that year were female. By 2017, the figure is just 30 per cent.

Those actresses who don’t play a named character are most likely to end up playing an unnamed prostitute or a housekeeper.

Kate Dickie, the most used British actress of the last decade whose roles have included a lady of the night, said: “I don’t have any more prostitutes in me. I don’t know how we will change the film industry until we change society.”

The data also reveals how tastes have altered over the years. In the 1970s it was the king of horror Peter Cushing ruling at the box office and in the 1990s ‘lad’ Keith Allen nabbed the most roles.

‘Moana’ Comes Out On Top At The Box Office For Third Consecutive Weekend

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Disney’s “Moana” topped a sleepy weekend at the multiplexes, earning $ 18.8 million to lead the domestic box office. It was the third straight victory for the animated adventure, which has made $ 145 million stateside since opening over Thanksgiving.

“Moana” was followed closely behind by newcomer “Office Christmas Party.” The raunchy comedy picked up $ 17.5 million from 3,210 locations, a solid result given its modest $ 45 million budget.

It’s a ho-hum time for ticket sales. The movie business continues to be in a holding pattern, eagerly awaiting the arrival of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” next week. That film is expected to score the second biggest December opening in history, earning more than $ 130 million in North America during its initial weekend.

Paramount expects “Office Christmas Party” will mirror “Sisters,” another R-rated comedy that premiered during the holiday season last year, ultimately doing more than six times its opening weekend number to end its run with $ 87 million. The hope is that “Office Christmas Party” can show similar endurance, becoming the de facto choice for college age moviegoers and men and women in their twenties.

“The date is built for legs,” said Megan Colligan, Parmount’s worldwide marketing and distribution chief. “Our audience is definitely the party audience and they’re partying a little bit, but they’ll find the movie over time.”

DreamWorks and Reliance backed the film about a group of workers who organize a huge holiday bash in order to keep their branch from closing. Paramount is distributing the film. It boasts an ensemble cast that includes Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Kate McKinnon, Courtney B. Vance, and T.J. Miller (who made headlines this weekend following an altercation with an Uber driver).

Lionsgate’s “La La Land” hit the right notes in limited release. The critically acclaimed musical racked up $ 855,000 in only five theaters in New York and Los Angeles. That’s the year’s best per-screen average with $ 171,000, and the second best of all time for a specialty film, behind only “The Grand Budapest Hotel” ($ 202,792). “La La Land” is expected to be one of the year’s major Oscar contenders.

“It’s such a great film,” said David Spitz, Lionsgate’s distribution chief. “Audiences love it and the critical response has been fantastic.”

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” took third place, earning $ 10.8 million. Its domestic total stands just under $ 200 million; a milestone the “Harry Potter” spin-off should cross on Monday. Paramount’s “Arrival” came in fourth with $ 5.6 million, pushing the science-fiction thriller’s gross to $ 81.5 million. Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” rounded out the top five, nabbing $ 4.6 million to push its stateside haul to $ 222.4 million.

Several Oscar hopefuls widened their reach this weekend. Focus Features’ “Nocturnal Animals” moved from 127 venues to 1,262 theaters, earning $ 3.2 million. The trippy Tom Ford thriller has made $ 6.2 million since opening in November.

Amazon’s “Manchester by the Sea” is chugging along nicely. The acclaimed drama about a grieving janitor (Casey Affleck) more than doubled its screen count to 367 theaters, making $ 3.2 million in the process. The film has earned $ 8.3 million since opening last month and will be on roughly 1,200 screens beginning next weekend.

In its second weekend, Fox Searchlight’s “Jackie” moved from five to 21 theaters, grossing nearly $ 500,000, and pushing its total to $ 860,000 after ten days of release.

Those films seem to be finding their audience. Not every awards hopeful was as lucky. EuropaCorp’s “Miss Sloane” struggled in expansion. The political thriller about a lobbyist taking on the gun industry earned $ 1.9 million after moving from four theaters to 1,648 locations.

Overall ticket sales were up nearly 10%. The box office benefited from weak comparisons, however. The year-ago period saw the release of “In the Heart of the Sea,” a costly whaling drama that bombed when it opened to just over $ 11 million.

“It was pretty much business as usual this weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with ComScore.

That won’t last. Next weekend, “Rogue One” is poised to shake things up.

The Third Tower Up from the Road

The Third Tower Up from the Road is a humorous and entertaining collection of travel essays made up of old favorites as well as new commentaries from Kevin Dolgin’s popular McSweeney’s Internet Tendency column, Kevin Dolgin Tells You About Places You Should Go. The work celebrates the distinctive qualities of locales the world over, and each globetrotting essay focuses on a specific place, capturing the flavors and cultures through individual observations and exceptional experiences. Funny, irreverent, and insightful, these writings eschew the bland, touristy veneer experienced by most travelers as they seek to discover what is special and unique about each destination. Covering a wide range of places and interests, from unusual experiences and humorous traveler’s foibles to voyages that are intensely personal and moving, the selected columns include “The Best Falafel in the World: Beirut, Lebanon,” “The Door to Hell: Paris, France,” “Kafka’s Erotic Dream: Prague, Czech Republic,” “The Nesting Habits of Roman Cars: Rome, Italy,” “Of Romans and Pussycats: Provence, France,” and “The Third Tower Up from the Road: Huanghuacheng, China.”Also featured is “The Corsican Swallowtail: Corsica, France,” which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

“So You Think I Drive a Cadillac?”: Welfare Recipients’ Perspectives on the System and Its Reform, Third Edition

“So You Think I Drive a Cadillac?”: Welfare Recipients’ Perspectives on the System and Its Reform, Third Edition

This down-to-earth look at the welfare system provides readers with stories from welfare recipients themselves and from those who recently left welfare for work: how they got onto welfare, what the reality of welfare (and welfare reform) is for them, issues in raising their families, their plans, hopes, and dreams are for the future, and some of the struggles they face as they try to leave the welfare system.Welfare recipients who were interviewed by the author in Florida and Oregon share their perspectives on work requirements, family caps, time limits, and other features of the new welfare reform (TANF) program. They discuss the importance of a livable wage and health insurance in providing the needed security to leave welfare for good. These qualitative interviews are theoretically grounded, and supplemented with up-to-date statewide and national data on welfare reform and its consequences. The author says, “Underneath the political rhetoric and welfare statistics are real live human beings who are trying to make sense out of their lives.” Their voices provide a crucial counterpoint to the politicians and policy “experts” who have shaped the policy reform initiative. They show us that the so-called welfare problem is related to the insecurity of low-tier work in the United States.

The Third Metric: Why Your Mileage Should Vary

You can’t praise water to one who has never experienced thirst. But you can be ready for the moment when they will get thirsty. Then hand them water. They’ll understand, but in their own way.

This is my experience of what the Third Metric is and how I came upon that realization long before I had heard of the idea. The Third Metric can indeed be a measure of success and meaning above and beyond money and power, but we will need to make room for personal experience and realization.

By now the beginning of my story has a familiar refrain: I had a great job, made leaps and bounds in my career at the most illustrious Web company of the mid-noughties and rented a riverside flat in London. I was living the dream promised to eager young business grads everywhere.

The guy sitting next to me left for a Harvard MBA. The girl next to me went to Stanford. And half-way through my GMAT mathematics
