Hotel Transylvania 3 Tops Weekend Box Office While Skyscraper Falls Flat

(LOS ANGELES) — “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” has checked into the No. 1 spot at the box office in its opening weekend and left the Dwayne Johnson action thriller, “Skyscraper,” in the dust.

Sony Pictures estimates Sunday that the animated family movie earned $ 44.1 million from North American theaters.

It easily beat out Johnson’s “Skyscraper,” which remained earthbound in its first weekend in North America. The Universal Pictures film brought in only $ 25.5 million domestically. “Skyscraper” cost a reported $ 125 million to produce.

Second place went to Disney and Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which brought in an additional $ 28.8 million in its second weekend, down 62 percent from last week.

And the coming of age film “Eighth Grade” scored top marks in limited release with $ 252,284 from four theaters.

Outfit Formula: Shorts and Pretty Tops

Mid-thigh shorts are popular with my clients, but most of my clients don’t feel pulled together when wearing them with basic tees. My suggestion is to style the shorts with a pretty top and casual flat footwear that’s dressier than flip-flops. The visual effect is relaxed and casual, but more grown-up and polished.

Here are four outfit ideas to get you started. Choose any colour palette across solids and patterns. Pick short lengths that make you feel fab.

1. Elaborate Knitted Top, Denim Shorts & Slip-Ons

Choose a knitted top made of jersey with some kind of detailing, like a peplum, hem frill, or exuberant sleeve. This example has ruched sleeves with ties that create an interesting effect with a pair of denim cut-offs and slip-ons like sneakers, espadrilles, or d’Orsay flats. Wear the top semi-tucked or untucked.

Eloquii Cuffed Jean Shorts

2. Dressy Shorts & Blouse with Slides

Choose dressy shorts, like a high-waisted style or a paper bag silhouette, and pair them with a dressy blouse made of eyelet, lace, or something silky. Tuck or semi-tuck the top to showcase the waistband of the shorts. Add flat slides to dress down the look. A straw bag adds a trendy yet classic and beachy touch.

Topshop Polka Dot Shorts

3. Shorts & Boho Blouse

This is the easiest version to pull together. Combine a pair of simple shorts with a breezy boho-lite blouse. Wear the top untucked and not semi-tucked like the model. Finish off the outfit with flat sandals or espadrilles, and a casual bag.

Athropologie Utility Stretch Shorts

4. Patterned Shorts, Knotted Top & Sneakers

Combine a pair of patterned shorts with an elaborate knitted top that you can knot at the hem to create some structure. That way you don’t need to tuck or semi-tuck the top, or let it hang and look tent-y. Finish off the outfit with sneakers. Here, the white top and sneakers match, pulling the look together. The silky shorts add textural interest and the sneaks throw in the athletic touch. A fun juxtaposition.

Eloquii Floral Print Drawstring Shorts

I don’t wear shorts of any description since I’d much rather wear a casual dress with casual footwear. That said, if a fabulous pair of knee-length shorts came my way I’d give them a whirl with a boho-lite blouse.

27 Swimsuits That Double as Tops (a la Bella Hadid)

Bella Hadid in Chanel swimwear in New York City.

Tracking down summer swimsuits can be a trying task. And not only because we desperately want to find ones that flaunt our assets while camouflaging our perceived flaws. Nowadays, swimsuits (both one-pieces and bikinis) seem more designed for the sand or pool-side rather than the water with all their frills: embellishments, appliqués and barely-there coverage practically begging for a wardrobe malfunction.

But Bella Hadid, aka supermodel and trendsetter, has a solution for rocking water-resistant swimwear: wear them as tops. In late April, Bella was spotted decked out in a black and white Chanel swimsuit poking out from her baggy jeans. Now, styling swimwear for après beach or pool is nothing new — that’s why there are cover-ups — but the model wasn’t even water-adjacent. No, she was just out and about in New York City, wearing swimwear as streetwear.

As Bella goes, so do the trends, so we’re expecting this styling trick to take off (like tiny shades and bike shorts). To get you ahead of the swell, we’ve rounded up 27 swimsuits that are prime candidates to wear as tops (some you can even swim in) along with helpful styling tips so you don’t look like a fish out of water as you’re pounding the pavement.

Stylish Tops for Under Suits

stylish tops for under suitsWe try to keep our major shopping guides updated regularly, but sometimes they need a major overhaul — that’s been the case for our Guide to the Best Tops for Under Women’s Suits for a while now.stylish tops for under women's suits - stock photo of a young woman wearing a bow blouse under a suit I’m proud to say we’ve finally done it — you can check it out here. In the meantime, ladies, let’s talk: what are your favorite, most stylish tops for under suits?

For my $ .02: I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I’ve always been a fan of wearing slightly fancy t-shirts under suits whenever possible, provided they’re easy to launder — I particularly like that a sleeved bottom layer means that my suit blazer can go longer without being laundered. I’d say my next favorite option is the popover blouse, like many readers have noted — much less problems with gaping! On the flip side, a cowl top is one of my least favorite things to wear under suits — they never seem to lay properly with the lapels. Similarly, wrap tops can sometimes fight the line of the lapels — and for me anything that’s too high-necked (like a crew neck or turtleneck) is usually not flattering, and requires extra thought to “lower the neckline” with a pearl necklace or something. The secretary blouse, as pictured here, has never been one of my favorites — too hard to get the tie just right — but it can be a great look (and it’s one of Selina Meyer’s favorite looks!).  Ladies, let’s hear from you — what are your favorite stylish tops for under suits? Is there anything you definitely wouldn’t wear under suits? Do you prefer to layer different tops under jardigans or cardigans, or can your closet do double duty?

Square-Neck Tops Are the New Off-the-Shoulder Tops

Square-neck tops at Rodarte and Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2018

Square-neck tops at Rodarte and Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2018; Images: Imaxtree

There’s no denying the power of a great blouse. A top that pairs perfectly with jeans, a miniskirt or tailored trousers is one of the most important and convenient items you can keep in your closet — hence why the off-the-shoulder top caught on like wildfire. But if that skin-baring wunderkind style is starting to feel tired, a new silhouette is primed and ready to take its place as your wardrobe MVP. Introducing the square-neck top.

We first noticed romantic square necklines in the spring collections of everyone from iconic design houses like Carolina Herrera and Dolce & Gabbana to cutting-edge labels like Isa Arfen, Cushnie et Ochs and Rodarte. Ironic as it may be, the Renaissance shape felt fresh and new, especially after months of bare shoulders permeating every aspect of ready-to-wear. What’s more, this trend shows just enough skin to be flirty and feminine while its covered shoulders make it a doable option for the office. A true must-have, indeed.

If you’re ready to give your off-the-shoulder top a break, try getting a fresh upgrade for spring with one of the shoppable options ahead. Suffice it to say, this season, it is officially hip to be square.

Walmart’s Doug McMillon’s Pay Tops $22 Million

Doug McMillon, president and chief executive officer of Walmart Inc., saw his total compensation rise 2 percent last year to $ 22.8 million, according to a regulatory filing. Most of that came from $ 15.7 million in stock awards, the ultimate value of which is tied to the company’s share price. He also drew a salary of $ 1.3 million and received incentive pay of $ 4.7 million.
Greg Foran, ceo of Walmart U.S., saw his pay slip 4.6 percent to $ 11 million.
Marc Lore, ceo of Walmart’s U.S. e-commerce business, received total compensation of $ 10.3 million — a big drop from the $ 243.9 million he reeled in during the prior year, although most of that came from his sale of Jet.com to the retail giant.
Lore is helping lead the company’s battle with online giant Amazon.
Under new rules from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company also reported that its median pay, excepting the ceo, was $ 19,177. That means McMillon brings in 1,118-times what the median Walmart worker does.

Weekly Roundup: Tops & Toppers

I’m doing a Fab Finds post and roundup post in one week because there are lots of winners to share this season. These particular items were client favourites recently, and we’ve actually had some Spring weather to do them justice. Be sure to browse all the colour options and read the rave reviews.

  • Vineet Bahl | Anthropologie Giovanna Silk Blouse: A romantic blouse with beautiful blouson sleeves that are cuffed so that they don’t drive you batty. A warm earthy colour. Great semi-tucked. Best suited to a smaller bust.
  • Wilt | Anthropologie WHIT Gingham Wrapped Blouse: A structured wrap top with architectural ruching. Tailored and forgiving on the midsection. Great over high-rise pants and skirts. Olive gingham is unusual. Best suited to those who can fill out the bust and/or shoulder line.
  • Eri + Ali | Anthropologie Audrina Lace Top: Pretty lace top that works on a range of body types. Fluid yet streamlined. Not see-through. Shorter bell sleeves are the way to go so that they don’t annoy you.
  • One September | Anthropologie Sydney Floral Top: A knitted boho-lite blouse with excellent drape. Casually pretty.
  • Club Monaco Weylyn Shirt: Best hectic architectural shirt I’ve seen to date. Gorgeous shade of blue. Beats most of the designer styles to my eye, and much more affordable. Oversized, yet tapered in all the right places which adds just enough structure. It’s not overwhelming, even on my slight frame. It earned a place in my wardrobe despite the wide neck because the cut is BRILLIANT. The collar that drapes down the back is cleverly positioned, and my chunky pearls fill in the gap on my neck. I like it best semi-tucked for structure. I wear it with Summer skirts and white jeans. I LOVE this shirt. My wild card for the season. Party at the back, and good with short hair to showcase the back detailing.
  • Madewell Central Ruffle Sleeve Shirt: The ruffle sleeve shirt has more structure around the neck and shoulders than a wrap top and looked much better on my body type despite the oversized fit. The flutter sleeves also broaden my frame, and I like the effect. The fabric is GORGEOUS and drapes very well, and it followed me home. Size down a size.
  • Michael Stars | Anthropologie Michael Stars Shine V-Neck Long-SleeveTee: Fab V-neck tee that works on a curvier figure. Does not cling. Substantial fabric. Flattering and versatile. Streamlined. The XS/S will fit US0 to 4. The M/L will fit US6 to 10.
  • City Chic Classic Trench Coat: Gorgeous trench coat for Team Tall with a regular or long waist. Best on a curvy body type with a defined midsection. STUNNING length. Elegant.
  • LEVI’S MADE & CRAFTED Embellished Boyfriend Trucker Jacket: A statement denim jacket if ever there was one. The embellishment is quite the work of art. It straddles the line of Tomboy and Girly and creates a fab juxtaposition. It’s NOT a tailored fit. Looks like a designer piece.
  • Loft Elbow Patch Knit Blazer: I couldn’t believe my eyes. A Summer equestrian tweed blazer that is 100% COTTON, fully lined, and machine washable. Gorgeously soft and comfy. Tailored, and works on a range of body types. The pearl grey is lovelier in person. Size down.
  • Loft Swingy Raincoat: Super cute Modern Retro raincoat. It’s supposed to be trapeze-shaped and roomy. Size down.
  • Anthropologie | Anthropologie Easy Moto Jacket: Best knitted moto jacket of the season. Extremely comfy, tailored, relaxed and distressed, yet quite polished. It suits a range of body types because the fabric and cut mould to the body. Also available in a warm earthy apricot.
  • Banana Republic Collarless Peplum Denim Jacket: If you don’t like stiff Tomboy denim jackets – TRY THIS ONE. It’s extremely soft, comfortable, and has a lot of stretch. Very tailored and quite sharp in silhouette. FLATTERING. The fit is fabulously streamlined despite the subtle peplum. It’s longer in person than on the model, so don’t worry about that too much. Every client who has tried it on so far has liked it. It works on a range of body types because it’s tailored and moulds to the body. It can absolutely pass for business casual because you have to look very closely to notice that it’s denim. Plus, you can dress it up. Fab with pants, jeans, skirts and dresses. It’s uniqueness and my love for denim jackets gave it a spot in my wardrobe.
  • Loft Peplum Utility Jacket: This utility jacket looks better in person and is available in olive. It’s soft, pretty, trendy, and excellent layered over bell sleeves. Size down a size. The sleeves look even better folded over once to create a cuff.
  • FRAME Stripe Blazer: Gorgeous blazer made of luxurious fabric that is non-crease and drapes like a dream. Soft, pretty, sharp and professional. Size down, and best on a straighter body type. A quality item. It took my breath away when I saw it modelled by a forum member in person.
  • Halogen Tweed Open Front Jacket: It’s unusual to see a Spring tweed jacket with a revere collar that creates a flattering V-neck, AND is in jewel tones. Best on those who can fill it out. Suited to a larger bust, apple-shaped body type, and short waist.
  • Rebecca Taylor Ava Peplum Jacket: Stunning business formal jacket that layers over pencil skirts and sheath dresses with the best of them. The peplum is subtle and architectural. A quality item. Black, not navy.
  • Boden Long Sleeve Wrap Top: A form-fitting faux wrap made of substantial fabric. Does not cling despite the close fit. Excellent layered under jackets and blazers. Comes in colours and patterns. Nice quality.
  • Boden Sylvia Jacket: A playful Modern Retro jacket that’s extremely well made. Stunning fabric and workmanship. A-line in silhouette and works on a range of body types. The yellow is more mustard than citron in person. Works really well over skirts and dresses too.
  • Boden Claremont Blazer: An impeccable Modern Classic blazer that looks chic. The finish inside is beautiful, and the lining might make you smile. Works on a range of body types because of the superb cut and quality fabric.
  • Loft Striped Stitchy Boatneck Sweater: Best classic striped Spring pullover I’ve seen all season. The inset side colour blocking is genius, creating a vertical streamlined effect that offsets the horizontal stripes. The neckline works on a range of body types. Nice fabric and good length. Size down.
  • Loft Dotted Lantern Sleeve Shirred Blouse: Pretty lantern sleeve blouse that layers quite well under a blazer because the exuberant sleeves are soft and slippery allowing them to comfortably collapse and hold their shape when the layer is removed. Size down.
  • Loft Brushed Dot Cutout Mixed Media Shell: A simple and effective shell top to wear under a cardigan or jacket. Comes in plus sizes. Size down.
  • Marrakech | Anthropologie Magnolia Zip Jacket: I haven’t seen this jacket in person yet, but it looks interesting, and has super cute back detailing.
  • Nordstrom Signature Waffle Stitch Cashmere Sweater: A warm pullover in a Spring colour ticks off the boxes when Spring feels like Winter. A quality piece that comes in turquoise. Sleeves are long but can be cuffed. Works on a range of body types. Fluid yet streamlined fit.
  • Banana Republic Double Breasted-Fit Seersucker Blazer: A pinstripe seersucker blazer that looks better in person. It can hang open so don’t worry about buttoning the front. Crisp, fresh and on trend. Works really well on petites. My 5ft client wore it over a sheath dress and looked stunning.

Trend: Wrap Tops

The classic wrap top is back with a vengeance. They were very popular ten to twelve years ago, but fell away when fashion favoured the fluid and oversized vibe. The sisterly version that followed the wrap top was the draped blouse, or wrap-front top. Wrapped in front but voluminous on the midsection, creating a different look to the traditional tailored “ballerina” wrap top.

I’m happy to report that the tailored wrap top is on trend. I love when modern classic items make a trendy statement and become the hip contender. It sends a message that fashion fads are a dated concept, that trends have a higher longevity factor than they used to, and that it’s how you incorporate an item into an outfit that makes it look current and fabulous.

Wrap tops are tailored at the waist most of the time, thereby creating conventionally flattering outfit proportions. To my eye, this looks fresh amidst the sea of unstructured tops of our fashion era. The wrapped front can be real or “faux” depending on the style. Either way, the silhouette narrows at the waist creating a streamlined effect. Wrap tops can be woven or knitted, sleeved or sleeveless, long or short, and patterned or solid.

Here’s a collection of wrap top variations.

Sometimes, wrap tops aren’t tailored at the waist, as these examples show. Some do narrow at the hem with a welt or tie creating structure that way. Some look wide and straight. These tops are suited to those who don’t want to define the waist, but like the visual effect of the wrap.

Wrap tops that define the waist are a slam dunk on a curvy hourglass and pear-shaped body type. The wrapped fronts create a V-neckline that works extremely well on a larger bust and/or shorter neck and broader shoulder line. The tops work well with the high-rise bottoms trend because the waist tie and waistband are in the same position on the body.

Real and faux wrap tops can be slightly odd on the wrap section when they aren’t cut properly, thereby fighting with the bustline. But when the cut is good, a wrap top flatters the bustline and waist beautifully. The knitted versions fit particularly well over a larger bust because they stretch and mould to the contour of the body. They can also be quite forgiving of midsection “extra bits” when they don’t cling on that part of the body.

Simple and sleek faux wrap tops layer extremely well under blazers and jackets. The jersey versions are an easy item to travel with, especially for business wear capsules. The maximal versions with gigantic ties and bows on the waist make a fabulous statement on their own. They are hard to layer under a topper, but fun for Summer.

I generally steer away from wrap tops because the necklines are too wide for my body type. My narrow shoulders, long neck, and regular size bust battle to fill them out. That said, about twelve years ago I had a few AMAZING gauzy and delicate faux wrap tops that worked well for my body type. The neckline created a shawl collar effect on my shoulder neck points and the V-shape in front was very narrow. These specific design details provided ample structure around my shoulders, and shortened my neck. I wore them with a pretty lace camisole that peeked out from under the narrow V-neckline, and layered them under jackets. I am open to wearing that type of wrap top because it provides structure where I need it most. I also enjoy defining the waist.

Over to you. What’s your take on wrap tops? Many of my clients are back to wearing the silhouette because they enjoy the streamlined effect.

Fab Finds: Tops, Shoes and a Bag

There’s a lot of good stuff out there at the moment, so much so that I’ve finished my own Spring and Summer refresh two months earlier than normal. My clients have been pleased with the more feminine, dressy and less oversized looks in stores, as well as the larger assortment of dresses with sleeves and hem length. Here are some items that have been winners on my clients recently.

1. White House Black Market Floral & Lace Twinset

The photos do not do this great look justice. The high-low blouse paired with the cardigan in the same pattern was SO fab on my client last week that I squealed in the dressing room. Leave the cardigan open in front. Nice quality, unique, easy, pulled together, crease-resistant, flattering and does not need a camisole. Smart casual or business casual. Fluid and tailored in the right places. The blouse is available across petite, regular and plus. The floral cardi is available in petite and regular. Size down.

2. Michael Stars Boat Neck Shine Knit Top

This is a GREAT tailored knit top. Flattering, comfortable, crisp and easy to launder. It’s more like a very light pullover than a tee. Much neater, dressier, and more pulled together and structured than a T-shirt. The fabric is substantial. Sleeve length is excellent. It layers beautifully under jackets, but looks good on its own because of the shine, fab fabric, and good fit. The boat neck is surprisingly bra-friendly. The size range is unfortunate since it comes in two sizes only. The XS/S will fit a US0 to 4, and the M/L will fit a US4 to 8. It runs true to size, and works well on a straighter or curvier body type. It’s long, so not good on petites and short waists unless it’s hemmed to a shorter length. Don’t try the top if you’re self-conscious about your midsection, because it might cling.

I don’t wear T-shirts and stick to blouses, shirts and and knitwear for tops. Very occasionally, I’ll find a knit top that ticks all the boxes, and this one did just that. I bought the white and the stripe to wear with jeans and Summer skirts both untucked and semi-tucked. The neckline works well with my chunky pearl necklaces. I love the subtle shine and the tailored fit. The XS/S is a more fluid fit on me than on the model. All the colours are nice.

3. Madewell Chambray Tops

A chambray top needn’t look like a menswear or cowboy shirt. Madewell has good chambray tops at the moment, and they’re versatile. The fabrics are not stiff and denim-y either. They’re soft, tencel, or cotton/linen blends.

The Wrap Top is fabulous with skirts, and best on those who can fill out the bust and/or shoulders. I looked awful in it because my narrow shoulders, long neck and regular size bust could not fill it out.

The Central Ruffle Sleeve Shirt has more structure around the neck and shoulders and looked much better on my body type, despite the oversized fit. The flutter sleeves also broaden my frame and I like the effect. The fabric is GORGEOUS and drapes very well, and it may have followed me home. Size down a size.

4. Cosima Circle Bag

This bag is very cute. It can be used as a crossbody or satchel. It’s faux leather, well made, relatively affordable, lightweight, and roomier than it looks. All the colours are nice, and not as bright in person as in the pictures.

5. Hispanita Footwear

I can’t rave enough about Hispanita footwear. Made in Spain, the aesthetic is Euro and somewhat Mediterranean. Refined and dressy, and with many walkable heel heights and silhouettes that are a little different to the norm. They are beautifully made, and most of the styles are very comfortable. Super soft leather, a cushioning footbed, enough support, and room for an orthotic if your feet aren’t too wide. The styles can fit both a higher and lower volume foot if you go up or down in size — the cut of the shoe is that good. A little pricey but you’re getting a quality item. I bought a pair of floral oxfords last year and they’re smashing. I always have my eye on this brand.

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One Tops Easter Weekend Box Office

(LOS ANGELES) — Steven Spielberg has found his way back to the top of the box office with the action-adventure “Ready Player One,” while Tyler Perry has scored again with “Acrimony.”

Studio estimates on Sunday say Spielberg’s virtual reality-focused film earned a solid $ 53.2 million in its first four days in theaters from 4,234 locations since opening Wednesday night, with $ 41.2 million of that coming from the three-day weekend.

Not adjusted for inflation, it’s Spielberg’s best opening in a decade following “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” which launched with $ 100.1 million in 2008. Aside from “The BFG,” Spielberg has lately favored smaller historical dramas instead of the big-scale blockbusters of his heyday.

Based on Ernest Cline’s popular novel and chalk full of references to 1980s pop culture, including some nods to Spielberg’s own films, “Ready Player One” is a return to the popcorn filmmaking that he became known for. With that includes a reportedly hefty $ 175 million price tag, which does not account for marketing costs.

Audiences gave the film an A- CinemaScore, and reviews have been warm, too (it’s sitting at a 76 percent on Rotten Tomatoes). Those who turned out this weekend were mostly male (59 percent) and over the age of 25 (56 percent).

“It’s great to be in the Steven Spielberg business,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.’ president of domestic distribution. “We always believed that this movie itself would carry the day and that’s really what happened. We’ve seen all around the globe that the word of mouth is really propelling it.”

Goldstein said while advance ticket sales were solid, the walk-up business was particularly robust on Friday and Saturday.

Internationally, the film exceeded the studio’s expectations with $ 128 million from 62 territories, including $ 61.7 million from China (the biggest-ever opening in the country for Warner Bros.). Globally it grossed $ 181.3 million.

ComScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said the performance of “Ready Player One” should be judged in the context of the marketplace, which is down significantly (24.1 percent) from last March and has seen nearly every film since “Black Panther” open in the “middling to good range.”

“None of them have set the world on fire,” Dergarabedian said. “We’re living in a world where a $ 52.3 million gross for the first four days is a really good number.”

“Tyler Perry’s Acrimony” took second place. Driven by an overwhelmingly female audience, the film starring Taraji P. Henson grossed $ 17.1 million over the 3-day weekend, followed by “Black Panther” in third place with $ 11.3 million.

With $ 650.7 million in domestic grosses, “Black Panther” is poised to pass “Jurassic World’s” $ 652 million to become the fourth highest grossing domestic release of all time.

A batch of faith-based films also competed for attention leading up to the Easter holiday, including “I Can Only Imagine,” which scored again with $ 10.8 million to take fourth place. It outshined “Paul, Apostle of Christ,” which earned $ 3.5 million in weekend two and the new opener, “God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness,” which stumbled with $ 2.6 million. Even Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs,” playing in only 165 locations, beat “God’s Not Dead 3” with $ 2.8 million.

“Pacific Rim Uprising” rounded out the top five with $ 9.2 million, down 67 percent from last weekend’s No. 1 opening.

The year is still down nearly four percent, too, but there are some superheroes on the horizon.

“The cavalry is on the way in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’” Dergarabedian said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1.”Ready Player One,” $ 41.2 million.

2.”Tyler Perry’s Acrimony,” $ 17.1 million.

3.”Black Panther,” $ 11.3 million.

4.”I Can Only Imagine,” $ 10.8 million.

5.”Pacific Rim Uprising,” $ 9.2 million.

6.”Sherlock Gnomes,” $ 7 million.

7.”Love, Simon,” $ 4.8 million.

8.”Tomb Raider,” $ 4.7 million.

9.”A Wrinkle in Time,” $ 4.7 million.

10.”Paul, Apostle of Christ,” $ 3.5 million.

These items were winners on clients last week, and many are available in plus sizes, although you may need to click through to the plus size section to see the full set of sizes. The King Reigns Supreme: ‘Black Panther’ Up To $1B, Tops ‘Wrinkle In Time’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — T’Challa still rules the box office four weeks in, even with the fresh rivalry of another Walt Disney Studios release in “A Wrinkle in Time.”

“Black Panther” took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office with $ 41.1 million according to studio estimates Sunday, leaving another newcomer in its wake. The Marvel and Disney phenomenon crossed the $ 1 billion mark worldwide this weekend and became the 7th highest grossing domestic release with $ 562 million. Not accounting for inflation, it’s now passed “The Dark Knight.”

With a marketplace still dominated by “Black Panther,” Disney faced some stiff competition from its own studio in launching Ava DuVernay’s adaption of “A Wrinkle in Time,” which opened in second place with $ 33.3 million from 3,980 locations. The PG-rated film, which cost around $ 103 million to produce and stars Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, received mixed reviews from critics (it’s currently at a “rotten” 44 percent on RottenTomatoes) and audiences who gave it a B CinemaScore.

In gauging “A Wrinkle in Time’s” long-term prospects, a somewhat similar comparison could be Disney’s “Tomorrowland,” a PG-rated sci-fi pic with middling reviews and a B CinemaScore which opened to $ 33 million in the early summer of 2015 and went on to gross $ 93 million domestically. “Tomorrowland,” however, notably cost nearly twice as much to make as “A Wrinkle in Time.”

But the “Black Panther” effect is the x-factor here. For Disney, it’s a “win all around.”

“When you think about having two films at the top of the box office, it’s definitely a win all around,” says Disney’s worldwide theatrical distribution president Dave Hollis. “We’re feeling good about this start … We’re feeling good about what, for us, is a little family competition between now and (the Easter holiday).”

Hollis says he doesn’t think the studio would have done anything differently regarding “Wrinkle’s” release had they known the scope and longevity of “Black Panther’s” prospects.

“There’s always going to be competition in the marketplace,” he says. “With a tentpole strategy like ours, four weeks of separation is about what we can expect.”

Still, “Black Panther” has devoured the marketplace for a month straight now, leaving all other newcomers in the dust.

The new horror film “The Strangers: Prey At Night,” with Christina Hendricks, took third place with $ 10.5 million. The Jennifer Lawrence thriller “Red Sparrow” landed in fourth in its second weekend with $ 8.2 million and the comedy “Game Night” placed fifth with $ 7.9 million in weekend three.

Hardly any of the new releases, which also included the thriller “The Hurricane Heist” (8th place, $ 3.2 million) and the dark action comedy “Gringo,” (11th place, $ 2.6 million) were well-reviewed going into the weekend, save for the limited release independents like “Thoroughbreds,” which made $ 1.2 million from 549 locations, and Armando Iannucci’s “The Death of Stalin,” which opened in four theaters to $ 181,000.

It also left room for the Academy Award best picture winner “The Shape of Water,” which is also available on home video, to capitalize on its post-Oscars stature. The Fox Searchlight film added 720 theaters and took in in $ 2.4 million from 1,552 locations, bringing its domestic total to $ 61 million.

But even though “Black Panther” has helped boost the year to date box office significantly, it’s also proving to be a continued challenge for any other wide release hoping for a piece of the market.

“Every movie that has opened in the wake of ‘Black Panther’ has had its work cut out for it,” says comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “We keep underestimating this film and it just shows no sign of slowing down.”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1.”Black Panther,” $ 41.1 million ($ 100 million international).

2.”A Wrinkle in Time,” $ 33.3 million ($ 6.3 million international).

3.”The Strangers: Prey At Night,” $ 10.5 million ($ 140,000 international).

6.”Peter Rabbit,” $ 6.8 million ($ 4.8 million international).

7.”Death Wish,” $ 6.6 million ($ 3 million international).

8.”The Hurricane Heist,” $ 3.2 million ($ 1.9 million international).

9.”Annihilation,” $ 3.2 million.

The Hunt: The Best Sleeveless Tops, Shells, and Blouses for Work

our favorite sleeveless tops, blouses, and shellsSure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have. Wondering how to use wardrobe basics like this? Check out our challenge with four weeks of work outfit ideas!

Sleeveless tops are a basic in every woman’s work wardrobe — but which ones are the best? These are some of the best-selling styles we’ve mentioned in the past, all rounded up in one place — I’d love to hear your favorites that aren’t included here. As I’ve noted in the past, these aren’t necessarily my favorite tops to wear under blazers or other dry-clean-only clothes — call me a weirdo, but I like to have sleeves (even short sleeves) to better separate my body from the clothes that need expensive cleaning. (You may want to check out our post on the best tees for layering if that sounds more like your speed.) That said… a sleeveless top is much better for layering and creating clean lines beneath cardigans and blazers. I like that all of these tops cover the bra strap entirely; they also have pretty high arm holes and relatively high necklines — they’re very different from camisoles we’ve featured in the past. (As we’ve cautioned in the past, know your office — sleeveless looks aren’t always considered professional or conservative enough by themselves; only layered beneath things.)

Readers,  which are your favorite sleeveless tops for work — and how do you wear them? What’s  your preferred price range (most of these are under $ 50!) — and where do you buy your sleeveless tops?

See our roundup, after the jump…

sleeveless top for work: a super affordable option in regular, petite and plus sizesReaders recommended this super affordable sleeveless top from Kohls’ a while back, and I’ve been impressed by how many iterations I’ve seen of the same top since it came on my radar: it’s always got a zillion new prints and colors available. Most of the prints aren’t necessarily my taste, but if you see one you like snap it up because they change frequently. The tops are available in regular, petite, and plus sizes for $ 15-$ 35. Dana Buchman Knot Front Top (also try this link)
I remembered that we mentioned this top recently — but looking today I’m surprised to see that we were talking about it as long ago as 2012. The Macy’s description notes that it’s unlined, but if you look at the back of the shirt it does look like the front is double-lined. I knew the shirt came in black and white — I did not realize Macy’s has a zillion other colors (I particularly like this windowpane). The top is available in regular and petite sizes 2-16, as well as plus sizes for $ 25-$ 59.  Calvin Klein Sleeveless Pleated Top
This inverted pleat top from Vince Camuto has been around for a few years and has a great blousy look if you don’t like close-fitting tops. It’s currently available in a ton of colors at Macy’s for $ 32.  Inverted-Pleat Blouse
I always like Anne Klein clothes for work, and this triple pleat neck sleeveless top looks lovely. (We featured it not long ago in a leopard print!) It’s available in sizes XS-XL at Nordstrom for $ 39 (ooh, and Macy’s has additional colors and a sale today for $ 23 — as well as plus sizes). The top is also machine washable.  Triple Pleat V-Neck Jersey Top
This Tahari top is a bit more expensive ($ 68 full price) — but note that the georgette fabric is listed as “dry clean.” (You can see our thoughts about what “dry clean” really means here, though.) It’s available in white and black at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s for $ 68. (This V-necked sleeveless top from Calvin Klein is similarly priced and also getting good reviews.) Pictured:  ‘Edie’ Pleat V-Neck Blouse
silk sleeveless top This silk blouse has long been a best-seller at Saks and Bloomingdale’s — I love the high collar paired with the deep V. It’s available in basic colors for $ 178 in XS-XL. Judith Silk Blouse

Jumanji Tops Insidious and Star Wars at Box Office

(Los Angeles) — Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” handily won the first box office weekend of 2018 over the launch of “Insidious: The Last Key” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” with $ 36 million at 3,801 North American locations.

The fourth installment of the “Insidious” horror franchise scared up a surprisingly strong $ 29.3 million at 3,116 sites for Universal. Disney-Lucasfilm’s “The Last Jedi” followed in third with a 55% decline to $ 23.6 million at 4,232 venues for a 24-day total of $ 572.5 million — the sixth-largest of all-time.

Fox’s third weekend of “The Greatest Showman” held nicely in fourth, declining only 12% to $ 13.6 million at 3,342 theaters for a 19-day total of about $ 77 million. It was followed in fifth by Universal’s third session of “Pitch Perfect 3” with $ 10.2 million at 3,458 sites, lifting its 17-day take to a solid $ 86 million.

Fox’s fourth weekend of animated comedy “Ferdinand” finished sixth with $ 7.7 million at 3,156 venues, followed by Jessica Chastain’s “Molly’s Game” from STXfilms, which brought in $ 7 million after expanding to 1,608 sites from 271. Chastain received a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a drama for her work in the film — whether or not she wins will be determined Sunday. The film also received a Producers Guild Award nomination on Friday for best film, a day after Aaron Sorkin’s script received a Writers Guild nom for adapted screenplay.

The “Jumanji” sequel has taken in $ 244.4 million in its first 19 days domestically. It’s the first weekend box office win for “Jumanji” — which has gone past “Justice League” as the ninth-largest domestic grosser among 2017 titles. “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is also topping the $ 500 million mark worldwide.

Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan star in “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” a sequel to Robin Williams’ original, which was a 1995 hit with $ 262 million worldwide. “Welcome to the Jungle” follows four high schoolers in detention who wind up as video game characters facing an array of challenges.

“Insidious: The Last Key” came in far above expectations, which had been in the $ 16 million to $ 19 million range. It’s the latest horror title from Blumhouse Productions, which delivered low-cost horror hits last year for Universal with “Split,” “Get Out,” and “Happy Death Day.” The franchise dates back to 2010 with “Insidious,” followed by “Insidious: Chapter 2” in 2013 and “Insidious: Chapter 3” in 2015 — which have grossed a collective $ 357 million worldwide.

Lin Shaye, who has starred in all three films, returns in “Insidious: The Last Key” as a parapsychologist whose haunted childhood comes to threaten her family and home in a follow-up to the events in “Insidious: Chapter 3.” It’s produced by “Insidious” regulars Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and co-creator James Wan and by Sony Pictures (through Stage 6 Films) with Blumhouse. Universal is the U.S. theatrical distributor with Sony releasing in the rest of the world.

Overall domestic business was up 18.1% to $ 165 million, according to comScore — a welcome sign after 2017 saw a 2.3% decline in total grosses.

“2018 is off to a rollicking start with ‘Jumanji’s’ unexpected strength boosting the overall marketplace nearly 20% ahead of the comparable weekend a year ago as the box office new year gives the industry cause to celebrate with an incredibly diverse lineup of titles driving patrons to theaters and a red hot awards season in full swing,” noted Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore. “Two years ago was not even as strong with a ‘Force Awakens’ driven marketplace ringing up sales of $ 159.1 million for the same weekend in 2016.”

Michelle Obama Tops Melania Trump In Poll For ‘Most Admired Woman’

Former First Lady Michelle Obama continues to make major moves since leaving the White House.

In addition to globetrotting with her husband Barack Obama to countries such as French Polynesia, Italy and Indonesia, Newsweek notes that Mrs. Obama continues to empower women and young people through her various causes such as the “Let’s Move’ campaign.

Back in May, Obama attended the annual partnership for a Healthier America Summit in Washington, D.C. and took a “veiled swipe” at Donald Trump and his administration.

“We’ve got to make sure we don’t let anybody take us back,” Obama said. “Every elected official on this planet should understand, don’t play with our children. Don’t do it.”

During her time as first lady, not only was Michelle dedicated to a number of empowering causes, she was also quite outspoken about criticism of Barack and HIS White House.

In spite of all the Obama “haters”… Michelle’s #blackgirlmagic continues to influence and impact many lives, and her dedication has earned her a top spot in Gallup’s poll of the “most admired” women in the U.S.

7% of the Americans polled said Michelle has a cozy spot in their hearts more than any other woman. The No. 1 spot went to Hillary Clinton, whom 9% of Americans said they admired the most. Only 1% of Americans named Melania Trump as the woman they most admire, per Business Insider.

The outlet notes how “Trump has received backlash for wearing expensive outfits, which can make her seem out of touch with Americans. Obama, meanwhile, used her fashion choices to represent social and political initiatives.”

Adding, “The difference is that Obama found ways to use fashion to bolster her political credibility — a skill Trump is still developing.”

Vogue said in its review of Obama’s 2012 book, “American Grown,” that “throughout the book, the first lady, always beautifully coiffed, wears a different J. Crew sweater to match the season (marigold yellow for summer, Argyle for fall).”

Do you agree that Michelle Obama used fashion to symbolize her social initiatives?

Pixar’s Coco Tops Justice League at Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office

(NEW YORK) — Pixar’s “Coco” sang its way to the fourth best Thanksgiving weekend ever with an estimated $ 71.2 million over the five-day weekend, a total that easily toppled Warner Bros.’ “Justice League.”

“Coco” rode strong reviews and an A-plus CinemaScore from audiences to the top spot at the domestic box office. According to studio estimates Sunday, it grossed $ 49 million from Friday to Sunday. Centered on the Mexican holiday Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), “Coco” has already set box office records in Mexico, where it has made $ 53.4 million in three weeks.

After a disappointing debut last weekend, the much-maligned DC Comics superhero team-up film “Justice League” slid to second with $ 40.7 million. In the five-day holiday frame, it earned about $ 60 million. “Justice League” is faring better overseas, where it has made more than $ 300 million.

The two top spots told a familiar tale: Quality is trumping mediocrity at the box office, where Rotten Tomato ratings bear considerable weight and where word-of-mouth spreads lightning quick. “Coco” is Pixar’s sixth release to land an A-plus CinemaScore from audiences. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes rating, 96 percent fresh, is more than double that of “Justice League” (41 percent).

“In a world where moviegoing and quality seem to be connected, having a brand that has as consistently as Pixar has delivered on very high expectations definitely makes our work a little easier,” said Dave Hollis, distribution chief for the Walt Disney Co., which owns Pixar. “Consumers have really come to expect high quality. This is once again Pixar doing what they do best.”

The success of “Coco” came just as reports of sexual misconduct were published regarding Pixar co-founder and Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter. On Tuesday, Lasseter announced that he was taking “a six-month sabbatical.” He acknowledged “missteps” and “unwanted hugs” with employees. Disney has said it supports Lasseter’s leave of absence.

Lasseter has been foundational to the rise of Pixar and the revitalization of Disney Animation. “Coco” is the latest in a long line of hits he’s overseen.

After some early blunders (Disney tried to trademark “Dia de Los Muertos,” sparking a backlash), the studio strove to capture Mexican culture authentically in “Coco,” enlisting cultural consultants for their feedback. The film, directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina, is one of the largest U.S. productions ever to feature a largely all-Latino cast.

That makes “Coco” an anomaly in the Pixar canon but also in Hollywood. Hispanics made up 23 percent of frequent moviegoers last year, but they’re seldom catered to. Disney didn’t share ethnic demographics for “Coco” ticket buyers but said signs pointed to a high turnout among Latinos.

“Telling great stories that represent the audience is a part of what makes a film successful, especially when you get it right,” said Hollis.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore, called the film’s result a positive story in “a week that was pretty challenging for Pixar.”

“The future may lie in content like this, where you’re telling stories about real human beings and about diversity,” said Dergarabedian. “The Hispanic audience is key to the success of any given box office year, given the frequency and passion for moviegoing.”

Still, the most profitable movie currently at the box office might be the Lionsgate family release “Wonder,” directed by Stephen Chbosky. Starring Jacob Tremblay and Julia Roberts, the film — which carries a production budget of $ 20 million — has made $ 69.4 million. It slid just 19 percent in its second week, with $ 22.3 million in ticket sales.

A number of specialty releases with Oscar ambitions also hit theaters over the weekend. Of them, Sony Pictures Classics’ “Call Me By Your Name” came out with the best per-screen average: $ 101,219 in four theaters. Not since “La La Land” has a film so packed theaters in specialty release. The movie, starring Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer, is about a young man’s coming of age in 1980s Northern Italy.

“Darkest Hour,” with Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, debuted with $ 176,000 on four screens. The expanding releases of Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” ($ 4 million on 791 screens) and Martin McDonaugh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” ($ 4.4 million on 614 screens) also drew crowded theaters.

Less successful was the national rollout of “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” with Denzel Washington. Though it bested the other releases with $ 4.5 million on 1,665 screens, it’s an atypical downturn for one of the movies’ most consistently bankable stars. Not since Washington’s 2002 directorial debut, “Antwone Fisher,” has a film starring Washington performed as weakly nationwide.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Coco,” $ 49 million ($ 30.7 million international).

2. “Justice League,” $ 40.7 million ($ 72.2 million international).

3. “Wonder,” $ 22.3 million.

4. “Thor: Ragnarok,” $ 16.8 million.

5. “Daddy’s Home 2,” $ 13.3 million.

6. “Murder on the Orient Express,” $ 13 million.

7. “The Star,” $ 6.9 million.

8. “Bad Moms Christmas,” $ 5 million.

9. “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” $ 4.5 million.

10. “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” $ 4.4 million.

Egypt Blames Islamic State for Mosque Attack as Death Toll Tops 300

Egyptian officials on Saturday said gunmen in a brutal attack on a North Sinai mosque a day earlier were carrying an Islamic State flag. “They numbered between 25 and 30, carrying the Daesh flag and took up positions in front of the mosque door and its 12 windows with automatic rifles,” Egypt’s public prosecutor’s office said in a statement, using the Arabic term for Islamic State. Gunmen set off a bomb before blocking the mosque’s windows and doors and firing inside as people tried to flee, authorities said. The news came as the death toll climbed to 305 people, including 27 children. Another 128 people were wounded. Egypt’s military said it carried out overnight airstrikes and raids on militants believed to be involved in the attack, the deadliest so far in the country’s modern history.

Fab Finds: Shoes, Tops & Jewellery

Here are some items that have worked well for my clients recently. Some of them are simple and basic. Sometimes, we overlook how effectively simple silhouettes can be when they are dressed up and down, layered, amped up with accessories, or making a statement piece shine. They may look “boring” or uninteresting on their own, but remember to give them a chance because they can be fabulous in an outfit.

1. Blondo Ida Waterproof Bootie

Puddle, ice and light snow-proof with grippy non-slip and flexible soles. Visually sleek and very comfortable. Works for a wider volume foot, especially if you size up half a size. Low volume feet need to wear thick socks and add an insole. I vote charcoal grey as the best colour of the lot. Very deserving of the rave reviews.

2. Ann Taylor Faux Wrap Knit Top

A lovely modern classic with good drape. It has been SUCH a breath of fresh air to see clients wear tailored pieces like this wrap top for a change. It works well both tucked and untucked. Traditionally flattering. Works on a larger and smaller bust. As good on a straighter figure as it is on a curvier figure. Defines the waist of a rectangular figure, and accentuates the waist or an hourglass. Not good for muffin top.

3. Gentle Souls Ethan Pump

Dandy Fabness. More of a heeled loafer than a pump. It’s gloriously comfortable, super soft, and does not squish your toes. The stable block heel is magical. Visually, it shortens the foot a little, which might look stumpy so consider yourself warned. All the colours are nice. The gold is considerably brighter than the metallic brown or black patent. Works quite well for higher volume feet. My low volume feet were very happy and the gold followed me home as potential holiday party shoes. They are a good match with cropped jeans and trousers, and an unexpected match with dresses. I like them with dresses, and did not find them stumpy.

4. COS Roll-Neck Merino Jumper

Turtlenecks are a wardrobe essential for my style, and there are many to choose from each season. Despite their abundance, the ones that fit around the neck the way I want them to are rare. I like a tight, neat and polished fit around my neck, and most are sloppy. I also prefer knitwear to jersey knit. This turtleneck has a fantastic fit around the neck and is an item of knitwear. The body is as fluid as seen in the pics. The length is quite long, and looks good worn out over streamlined bottoms (not semi-tucked). The burgundy is a rich wine red in person, and that’s the one that earned a place in my wardrobe.

5. Madewell Gold Jewellery

Madewell does great clothing, but they do equally good casual and interesting gold jewellery. It’s well made, usually a brushed gold, and quite unique. The pieces are playful and delicately architectural. Clients often purchase a fun piece when we’re in the store shopping for jeans and tops.

6. Banana Republic Cropped Stretch Velveteen Pants

Many of my clients bought these, and almost all in the burgundy, and I did too. Very comfortable, warm, and with a forgiving fit on the tights, belly area and bottom. Fits a straighter and gently curvy body type quite well. The clever stretch is in the right place, and the thick fabric helps. They do not bag out. They are okay on larger calves when you wear a larger size. Available in longs and shorts. Tall girls should get the longs. They are NOT a casual ribbed corduroy, but a fun, on trend and very wearable velveteen. They look both casual and dressy. For me, they are an alternative to dark wash jeans that I wear at any time of day. NICE to change things up. The burgundy is less eggplant in person. The fit, length and drape is quite accurate in the video.

13 Tops to Layer Under Blazers

Blazers are fabulous, but wearing a suitable top underneath a blazer can be tricky, especially when tops with bell, fluted and lantern sleeves are all the trendy rage.

Here are 13 types of tops to layer under blazers. Some are ultra feminine, and others read the opposite. You’re generally not after a top that is oversized and chunky unless the blazer is roomy too. In most cases blazers are tailored or a fluid fit, so you’re after a body-con, tailored or fluid fit top. Wear them untucked, semi-tucked or tucked.

The effect of the layering top can be subtle, simple, complicated or bold. It can take on a variety of silhouettes, create a low or high contrast, look tonal, or fably texture-rich. Choose solids, patterns, knits or wovens. Add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.

1. Sleeveless Tops

Sleeveless tops, like simple shell tops, are popular with my clients because it’s comfortable and visually less bulky on the sleeves of the blazer. Choose a neckline that lies flat under the blazer, or rests comfortably above the collar.

2. Turtlenecks

High necklines like mock turtlenecks and turtlenecks are a ‘70s Modern Classic under a blazer. The effect is extra polished when the neckline fits tightly and neatly against the neck. Chic. You need a long neck for this combination.

3. Lightweight Pullovers

Pullovers with lower necklines like crew, scoop, boat, slash and V-necklines are fabulous under blazers, creating a streamlined effect. Sleeves can range from short to long. The larger the bust, the more flattering the effect of a lower neckline.

4. Shirts

A stiff and crisp button-down shirt is a masculine and Tomboy option under a blazer, but can look sharp and professional nonetheless. Leave the collar of the shirt open and wear it over the collar of the blazer, and pop the collar if you like. I like to button my shirts and blouses all the way up, and pop the collar. Shirts with neckties work beautifully with the tie tied in a bow or knot.

5. Blouses

A client favourite. Remember that a blouse is NOT a shirt. Blouses are softer and daintier. Blouse styles that you can wear under blazers run the gamut. Basic, pussy bow, empire cut, V-neck and ruffled collar styles with sleek sleeves are a good bet.

6. T-Shirts

A T-shirt is an easy option to wear under a blazer, and another client favourite. It’s comfortable, easy to launder, dresses up the tee, and dresses down the blazer. Choose your neckline and Bob’s your uncle.

7. Peplum Tops

Peplum blouses, tees, pullovers, leather tops and knitted tops are an acquired taste under a blazer. They add romantic flounce, and in most cases accentuate the waist.

8. Pretty Camisoles

Here’s an alluring option with lace, or another type of dainty and sensual fabric. If you keep the jacket on and choose a silhouette with ample cleavage coverage, it’s completely work appropriate.

9. Waistcoats

Another Tomboy and masculine option is to layer a button-through waistcoat under a blazer for a “Le Smoking” effect. Can be fun for dressier occasions, or simply style with jeans to dress the combination down.

10. Crop Tops

There are lots of crop tops at retail at the moment because they work well with the oh-so-trendy higher rises of jeans, shorts and trousers. From cropped tees and blouses to corsets and bustiers — they can all work under a blazer if you’re prepared to showcase some skin.

11. Wrap Tops

A hardcore modern classic to wear under a blazer, and a particularly effective one for a shorter neck and/or larger bust. Try a body-con bodysuit version, if you dare.

12. Hoodies

Our third Tomboy option, and adorable if the fit of the hoodie is dead right. It has to be sleek and the neckline of the hoodie should fit quite closely around the neck. Pull-on or zip-through hoodies can work. Pull the hood over the collar of the blazer, and make sure it lies flat.

13. Asymmetrical Tunics

Layering an asymmetrical tunic under a blazer creates a more avant-garde vibe that can be striking. If you’re worried about “chopping up the body” with the excess of horizontal lines, keep the tunic and blazer low contrast to each other. Or keep the tunic and bottoms low contrast to each other. And your third option is to create a tonal column of colour.

You can also wear blazers over dresses and layered tops.

Personally, I layer finer gauge knitwear like crew necks, mock turtlenecks, boat necks and turtlenecks under blazers. I also layer drapey blouses, the occasional button-down shirt, gauzy polo shirt, peplum top and pussy bow shirt. My favourites are simple long-sleeved blouses and turtlenecks in tailored and fluid fits. Some of the blouses I layer are roomier than fluid, but because they drape well, they work under tailored blazers without creating bulk. Because I prefer the fit of my blazers to be on the roomier side of tailored, I can layer a camisole, thermal underwear, and a top with sleeves under them.

Here are the exact tops from my wardrobe that I layer under blazers across the seasons:

LOTS of options. The list is not exhaustive, but it gives you a solid starting point. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section about how to layer tops under blazers.

J.J. Watt’s Hurricane Harvey Donation Drive Tops the $15 Million Mark

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt announced Friday that his donation drive for Hurricane Harvey flooding victims has raised over $ 15 million, far exceeding his initial goal of $ 200,000.

“Every single time we hit one of these landmarks I’m amazed,” Watt said in a video posted to Twitter. “I’ve said it so many times before but I think the worst times bring out the best in people, and we’re seeing that in abundance right now.”

The NFL player launched the fundraising effort Sunday after seeing the damage Harvey had caused in the Houston area and beyond.

“Where we stand right now is, we want to take care of the immediate needs first, so we have nine semi trucks fully loaded with supplies coming into town this weekend. My teammates and I are going to go directly into the community to some areas that were hit very hard and we’re going to hand those out.”

“I want to do right by everybody who donated, and I want to make sure we do right by the people of Houston. So I’m taking my time to make sure that we do this thing right,” Watt said. “I’m not going to do it hastily, I just want to make sure we do it right.”

SHOE DEAL UPDATE:

‘Moana’ Tops The Box Office For Second Weekend In A Row With $28.4 Million

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – “Moana” sailed to the top of the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. The Disney animated adventure picked up $ 28.4 million to push its stateside haul to $ 119.9 million.

Not that “Moana” faced much in the way of competition. The weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be a slow one for the movie business and this year’s edition was in keeping with that tradition. The only major new release, “Incarnate,” failed to sell many tickets, earning $ 2.6 million and falling short of its expected $ 4 million to $ 5 million opening.

“Incarnate” centers on a scientist (Aaron Eckhart) who enters the mind of an 11-year-old boy to rid him of an evil spirit. The horror film is the latest offering from BH Tilt, which is trying to contain distribution costs by orchestrating more targeted marketing campaigns for certain theatrical releases. “Incarnate” used digital advertising to try to better reach younger horror fans, and debuted on 1,700 screens, substantially fewer theaters than most studio movies unfurl across. It cost $ 5 million to produce.

“Believe,” a faith-based drama about a Christmas pageant, grossed a quiet $ 602,519 from 639 locations. Freestyle Releasing backed the film.

One bright spot was the limited release debut of Fox Searchlight’s “Jackie.” The look at First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s efforts to put on a funeral for John Kennedy that honored her husband and cemented the president’s legacy has earned raves for Natalie Portman’s lead performance and Oscar buzz. It also did strong business in five theaters, picking up $ 275,000 for a $ 55,000 per-screen average.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the Harry Potter spinoff from Warner Bros., took second place, earning $ 18.5 million to push its domestic gross to $ 183.5 million.

Paramount’s “Arrival” came in third, earning $ 7.3 million. The science-fiction thriller has made $ 73.1 million. Coming in fourth, Paramount’s “Allied” added $ 7 million to its $ 28.9 million gross. Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” rounded out the top five, picking up $ 6.5 million to bring its stateside bounty to $ 215.3 million.

Among Oscar contenders, Amazon Studios and Roadside’s “Manchester by the Sea” expanded nicely, picking up $ 2.4 million after moving from 48 to 156 screens. The acclaimed drama about a grieving janitor has made $ 4.4 million.

A24’s “Moonlight” continued to impress. The coming-of-age story made $ 915,750, pushing its gross to $ 9.9 million.

The domestic box office continues to outpace last year’s revenues, with 2016 up roughly 4% over 2015. However, the weekend totals were off 3% from the same period last year, when the horror comedy “Krampus” debuted to a strong $ 16.3 million.

The movie business continues to hold its collective breath for the opening of “Rogue One: A Star Wars” story on Dec. 16, which is expected to dominate ticket sales for the rest of the year.

“This was the drama-free weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “It’s the calm after the storm and the calm before the storm.”

Our culture of ignorance, arrogance, and gluttony undermines our present and endangers our future. Everywhere she turned, she saw signs of the impending disaster: zombie teens texting each other across a café table; a man having his eyebrows threaded at a kiosk; a fiftyish woman shoehorned into a tube top and skinny jeans; and a storefront ad featuring a Victoria’s Secret model spilling out of her push-up bra and into the faces of young passersby. Ingraham wondered, “Is this it? Is this what our forefathers fought for? What my parents struggled for? I wonder if Victoria’s Secret is still having that two-for-one sale?” In an act of patriotic intervention, the most-listened-to woman in talk radio casts her satirical eye upon all that ails American society. People meticulously tend their virtual crops on Farmville, while their children eat takeout. “Breaking News” usually means it happened yesterday. The weddings last longer than the marriages. Facebook has become a verb and reading has become an ancient art form. Of Thee I Zing is cultural commentary too funny to ignore, igniting a national conversation long past due. Cupcake Reform Tops Do-Nothing Congress’s 2014 Agenda

HR 056: The Confectionary Standards Amendment Act: Stipulates that the Congressional cafeteria must offer a wider variety of cookies and cupcakes, and mandates the formation of a Select Committee On Cookies and Cupcakes to decide the flavors and dimensions of said cookies and cupcakes. The act supersedes the Mandatory Dessert Control Act of 2012, which limited cookie choices to chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin, and cupcake frosting to chocolate and vanilla.

HR 444: The Congressional Relief Accessories Reform Act: Appropriates funds to provide scented toilet tissue in all Congressional lavatories. A special Congressional committee comprised of fifteen senior members will be appointed to investigate and choose between Hawaiian Breeze, Bamboo Rain and Red Honeysuckle Nectar.

HR 671: The Robert C. Pendleton Commemorative Coin Act: Allocates funds to create a silver coin commemorating Robert C. Pendleton for his heroic service to America, which was comprised of his choosing the official typeface for the Congressional Record in the face of fierce attacks from a team of graphic designers and calligraphers, resulting in the infamous Battle of the Fonts in 1948. The text of said coin will be written in the exact font for which Mr. Pendleton so gallantly fought.

HR 123: The Congressional Twitter Expansion Act: Authorizes members of the House of Representatives the exclusive privilege of utilizing 175 characters when engaged in the act of tweeting if said tweeting is conducted on the floor of Congress when the body is in session or during the State of the Union address.

HR 325: The Footwear Workers Facility Reform Act. Requires that soft fluffy cushions be added to the uncomfortable leather seats at the Congressional shoeshine parlor in order to preserve and protect the posteriors of Congressional representatives, and mandates that two additional shades of cordovan polish be included in an effort to prevent color discrimination.

HR 658: The Specialty Weapon Defense of Freedom Act. In keeping with the provisions of the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, minors over the age of six years will be permitted to carry squirt guns at day camp. Also stipulates that camp counselors will not be allowed to confiscate said items except in cases of severe leakage and inappropriate indoor usage.

HR 287: The Congressional Transportation Workers Freedom of Choice Act: Overturns the 1986 law that requires Congressional limousine drivers to wear long ties while on duty. Drivers will now be permitted to wear bowties instead, provided they are neatly tied and pass Federal neckwear regulations. Also allocates funds to provide for a staff of sixteen bowtie inspectors responsible for the approval of bowtie straightness, size and color.

HR 888: The Affordable Care Act International Employment Bill: Stipulates that all federally-appointed ACA customer service representatives employed by the Department of Health and Human Services be required to speak in foreign accents and refer to themselves with common American names. The member-appointed Select Committee on Bogus Customer Service Names will choose a list of prospective appellations for said employees, which will be followed by a floor vote.

HB 112: The Cooking Implement Recognition Proclamation Act: Designates May 9th of each year as National Spatula, Cheese Grater and Kebab Skewer Day. The legislation supersedes HR 560 of 1976, which formerly designated May 9th as Lost Sock Memorial Day.
