Cape Town: Best Travel Tips

FIRST-CLASS WINES, beautiful beaches, powerful history–how do you take it all in when visiting one of Africa’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities? At the Silo, a new hotel perched atop the continent’s largest modern-art museum, concierge Hoon Kim has a plan for your Cape Town trip.

Emerging neighborhood: Woodstock used to be quite industrial, with lots of factories, but it has become an area filled with interior designers, graphic artists, artisanal breweries, and contemporary galleries like SMAC and Whatiftheworld. There’s a famous Saturday market at the Old Biscuit Mill, which started Woodstock’s renaissance a few years back. We call it the Brooklyn of Cape Town.

Best new restaurant: At the very cool Janse & Co., chef Arno Janse van Rensburg is all about local produce. The food is experimental and creative–I recently had a sensational grilled leek dish with cream cheese and almonds–but it’s not fine dining. The restaurant is very simple, with dark walls and candles on the tables. There’s a wonderful courtyard, too; sometimes I go there just for a nice glass of chilled wine.

Urban escape: Franschhoek–Afrikaans for “French corner”–is about an hour from Cape Town and is known as the culinary capital of South Africa. It’s where the Huguenots first settled around 1600 and today is home to some of the country’s best restaurants and wine estates. Everything in this quaint town has a French feel, which is really weird and wonderful in the middle of South Africa. Haute Cabri?re is a familyowned boutique wine estate here.

Beach break: Because of melting icebergs from the South Pole, the South Atlantic Ocean surrounding Cape Town is actually colder in the summer than in the winter. Most people here prefer suntanning to swimming, but surfing is definitely very popular. Camps Bay and Clifton Beach are famous surf beaches, but I like Muizenberg Beach on the southern coast for its sand and milder water temperatures.

Locals’ secret: Reverie Social Table is a proudly South African farm-to-table eatery located in the quirky Observatory neighborhood. The chef, Julia Hattingh, is young and ambitious; I’ve never seen anyone as passionate about local produce and wine. She creates the five-course menu around a rotating wine selection. It’s served at a long table that accommodates maybe 12 people max, so you have to like sitting with strangers.

Must-have souvenir: South Africa is famous for leather goods, especially ones made from ostrich. Cape Cobra Leathercraft is a boutique whose owners, the Schafer family, make everything by hand, from belts to credit card holders to fabulous handbags, using very high-quality local leather.

Things to avoid: Tours of Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, are government regulated and not the best run. To learn about the painful memories of the apartheid era, try the District Six Museum instead.

The $ 10,000 Day

We asked Kim to plan us a special, singular day in Cape Town: The day would begin with a dramatic, scenic helicopter trip over the Cape Peninsula, affording jaw-dropping views of the waterfront, Table Mountain, and the Cape of Good Hope. Upon the guests’ return to the city, we’d whisk them off in a Maybach limousine for a tapas lunch at Chef’s Warehouse Beau Constantia in the heart of wine country. After lunch, guests would return to Cape Town for a luxurious sunset yacht excursion aboard the Only One, where, in between sips of South African bubbly and bites of gourmet canap?s, they could go for a swim before zipping out for a spin around Table Bay. And to conclude the day: a relaxing full-body massage under the stars on the rooftop of the Silo hotel.

Canadian Town Mourns 15 Killed in Youth Hockey Team Bus Crash

(HUMBOLDT, Saskatchewan) — A hockey arena became the epicenter of grief for a small Canadian town on Sunday, as friends, relatives and those that housed the young hockey players gathered to mourn 15 people killed after a semi-trailer slammed into a bus carrying a youth hockey team in western Canada.

Fourteen were also injured, some critically, in a collision that left a country, its national sport and the hockey-obsessed town of Humboldt, Saskatchewan reeling.

The bus had 29 passengers, including the driver, when it crashed at about 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 35, police said. Among the dead are Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan, team captain Logan Schatz and radio announcer Tyler Bieber.

Residents of this town of less than 6,000 have been leaving flowers, team jerseys and personal tributes on the steps of the arena’s entrance, forming a makeshift memorial. One tribute included a Kraft macaroni and cheese dinner box, which was a favorite meal of deceased forward Evan Thomas. A bouquet of pink roses adorned the box, which read “to Evan, game day special, love your billet brother and sister Colten and Shelby.”

While most of the players were from elsewhere in western Canada, they were put up by families in the small town of Humboldt. Billeting families are a large part of junior hockey, with players spending years with host families.

Dennis Locke, his wife and three young children came to the arena to hang posters of forward Jaxon Joseph, who is the son of former NHL player Chris Joseph. The Locke family housed Joseph and treated him like a son.

“Best person ever,” Locke said. “Down to earth, loved playing with the kids.”

His wife wiped away tears from swollen eyes.

Forward Logan Hunter and defensemen Stephen Wack, Adam Herold and Xavier Labelle were also among the dead, according to family members and others. Assistant coach Mark Cross, bus driver Glen Doerksen and stats keeper Brody Hinz, who was 18, were also killed.

Herold, who would have turned 17 on Thursday, played for the Regina Pat Canadians hockey team until just weeks ago, but was sent to join the Broncos for their playoff round when the Pat Canadians’ season wrapped up, said John Smith, the Pat Canadians’ manager.

The names of all the dead and injured have not been released by police.

Norman Mattock, a longtime season ticket holder, said his neighbor housed player Morgan Gobeil. The defenseman was severely injured and remains in serious but stable condition, Mattock said.

He said players become part of the community fabric, doing volunteer work or serving in restaurants. Three players who billeted by the same family all died in the crash, he added.

“They lost them all,” Mattock said.

The Broncos are a close-knit team who dyed their hair blond for the playoffs. The bus was driving the team to a crucial playoff game Friday against the Nipawin Hawks.

A vigil will be held on the hockey team’s home ice on Sunday night, and a makeshift stage and hundreds of chairs sit ready for the memorial.

“We’re devastated,” said hockey club Vice President Randolph MacLEAN. “At the center of this, we have 15 souls who’ll never go home again. We have 29 lives that will never be the same.”

MacLEAN said the community comes together at the arena on game nights that draw 800 to 1,000 people to the stands.

“It’s an energy that spreads through the town with road signs saying ‘game tonight,’ tickets for sale everywhere,” he said.

As is the case with small town hockey across Canada, he said, the arena is not just a recreation facility, but a focus of community life with the hockey team at its center.

With players who billet by local families, work in city businesses and attend local schools, MacLEAN said the tragedy touches every corner of Humboldt.

Canadian police said the truck driver, who was not hurt, was initially detained but has since been released and provided with mental health assistance. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki said it’s too early to state a cause for the crash.

Photographs of the wreckage showed the twisted trailer with most of its wheels in the air and the bus on its side with its back portion destroyed. The force of the crash sent both vehicles into the ditch at the northwest corner of the intersection.

The tractor-trailer would have had to yield to a stop sign before crossing over the highway that the hockey bus was travelling on. There is a stand of trees on the southeast corner of the intersection, limiting visibility of the approach on both roads.

Police said a lot of issues have to be investigated, including weather conditions at the time and any mechanical issues with the vehicles.

The tragedy brought to mind an accident in 1986, when the Swift Current Broncos team bus slid off an icy highway and crashed in late December, killing four players.

Here’s why March For Our Lives organizers are leaving chairs empty at this weekend’s town hall events

Here’s why March For Our Lives organizers are leaving chairs empty at this weekend’s town hall events

Here’s why March For Our Lives organizers are leaving chairs empty at this weekend’s town hall events

The student-led March For Our Lives on Saturday, March 24th was a monumental success. The movement saw more than 800 rallies in one day and kept the message of gun control in the national dialogue. Still, the work of these student activists is far from over. In their first follow-up action, March For Our Lives organizers have partnered with the Town Hall Project to demand a string of town halls across the nation this weekend — and beyond — in a series of events known as “Town Hall For Our Lives.”

Town Hall For Our Lives aims to connect elected officials with their constituents for a discussion addressing the epidemic of gun violence in America. More than 100 events in 34 states have already been scheduled, according to ABC News, with many expected to draw big citizen crowds. But it’s who won’t be in attendance that is perhaps making the loudest statement.

To symbolize the lawmakers who were invited to participate but declined — many of whom, but not all, are Republican, it should be noted — seats will be left empty to draw attention to their non-attendance. Representing the inaction of legislators in the face of repeated mass shootings, the empty seats send a powerful message about the priorities of our elected officials.

Simply put, too many of our lawmakers aren’t here for us, nor the principles behind the Town Hall For Our Lives events.

As of Friday morning, 33 Democratic representatives had confirmed their attendance. However, no Republican lawmakers have publicly committed to attending, despite the more than 70 town halls expected to take place in GOP-led districts so far.

Parkland student and shooting survivor David Hogg first raised the idea of hosting town halls to specifically address gun reform the day after the March For Our Lives. He also encouraged would-be organizers to invite their lawmakers’ political opponents, should their sitting representatives decline the invitation.

We honestly can’t think of a better way to say, “Take this seriously, or we’ll vote you out!”

Town Hall Project executive director Jimmy Dahman, a former organizer for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, told The Huffington Post the students’ efforts were “incredibly inspiring.”

“These students have shown great determination in wanting to engage in the democratic process,” Dahman said. “It’s elected officials’ responsibility to listen to their constituents. Democracy is best served when the people show up.”

The students behind the #NeverAgain movement have done an incredible job encouraging dialogue between citizens and lawmakers. Still, as awesome as they are, they can’t do it alone. If you’d like to organize a future town hall in your area, visit the Town Hall Project website and let your voice be heard.

Italian town Ollolai sells $1 homes to lure new residents

Buying a home can be one of the most expensive and stressful things you can possibly do. Anyone who has ever bought a home will be aware of the complications and pitfalls that are involved, especially when buying in the big city. The cost and complications can become overwhelming, and you are left wondering whether there is an easy way of doing all this. Well, there actually may well be.

Allow us to introduce the Italian town of Ollolai, nestled in Sardinia’s mountain region of Barbagia. This stunning place is actually tearing up every rule in the book, by offering homes for sale for just over $ 1. Yes, that’s one dollar. US. Who the how the what? Well, that was our first thought as well – so, here are a few things to know about Ollolai.

Natural beauty

The first thing you should know about this stunning town is just how much natural beauty there is, both in and around it. This is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen, and there’s no big surprise that it’s attracting attention. How would you like to have a home with winding hills and stunning mountain passes? When choosing a home you want to think about the view and the surrounding space, and Ollolai tops the table for these things.

Cheapest homes in the world

Though not the first Italian town or city to try this cheap homes gimmick, it’s clear that Ollolai has a lot of appeal. In fact, the exact sum would come to $ 1.20 USD. This is the kind of thing that you might hear about and assume it’s a scam to get money from people – but it’s actually completely legit! In a bid to rejuvenate a dying community, the government has put this in place in order to prevent the town from becoming a ghost town. We don’t know about you, but we think this is a masterstroke. The mayor secured a lot of the empty properties here, and the government began selling them in 2017 for peanuts!

Frozen in time

Formerly the capital of Barbagia, Ollolai remains of the most untouched places of Sardinia. In fact, in many ways, this is a place very much frozen in time. With abandoned, disused homes, and the population dwindling each year, it very much has that ancient feel about it. But we think this is a big part of what makes it so popular and appealing. It’s the perfect place for those sick of city life and lonely for the small towns. Fresh air and wonderful views can actually be a really great way of healing the mind and body.

How would you love to get your hands on one of these homes? Sounds too good to be true right? Well, there is one catch, that buyers must commit to a $ 25,000 refurbishment within three years of purchase. Still, $ 25,001 is a steal for a home these days, no matter where you are. We would recommend these homes to any prospective homeowners out there – don’t wait around for them to all get taken.

In a Pretty Little Hilltop Town in Italy, a Gruesome Murder and a Right Wing Shooter Gunning Down Refugees

Luca Train ANSA/AP

ROME—Luca Traini, 28, wrapped an Italian flag around his neck, grabbed his Glock and got into his black Alfa Romeo 147 with one apparent motive: to shoot African migrants.

He then drove street to street around the small town of Macerata, shooting five men and one woman, injuring two seriously, before police were able to stop the shooting spree in front of the town’s monument to fallen soldiers. There, he then got out of his car, gave the Fascist salute and admitted to the crime, say police.

Traini, a muscled-up sometime boxer who ran for a local political post under the banner of Italy’s far-right Northern League party in 2017, had told his friends at the gym a day earlier, “I have a pistol and I’m not afraid to use it,” according to local Italian media reports.

Tordesillas – the town that split the world in two

The world is a really diverse and fascinating place, and there is so much we don’t know about such a vast majority of it. In fact, there are many places where things might appear to be the same, but they actually aren’t. What is the secret being this, and why do we have so much diversity in the world?

Have you ever wondered why all of South America speaks Spanish except for Brazil, where they speak Portuguese? Well, the reason for that is because the Portuguese colonized Brazil. But, how did that happen? And why is Brazil the only South American country colonized by Portugal, with all the rest being Spain? Well, to get the answer to this, we have to take a trip back through time, to 1494.

Origins

The world was very different top how it is today, and the high seas were where the battles of the world were fought. Many nations vied for supremacy, and trade routes were formed in the oceans of the world. The Spanish Empire was vast and impressive, and they held sway over much of the seafaring in the world. The Spanish met with the Portuguese crown, and agreed on the Treaty of Tordesillas. This divided the lands they had yet to find, establishing the line dividing the countries for the purposes of colonization.

What led to the treaty?

There were a number of factors at the time that led to the treaty being pursued and signed by both parties. The Spanish had good reason to want to pursue the treaty, as they had fears of an imminent war with Portugal, not to mention the fact that a doomed Columbus voyage made the Portuguese aware of Spanish discoveries, and they claimed the lands as theirs. The Treaty of Tordesillas did away with the old treaty between the two nations, and, instead of drawing a horizontal line, which divided the Atlantic between Portugal and Spain, it drew a vertical line across the Atlantic.

What this meant

Well, the Portuguese were pretty mad about this because it meant they lost new islands, as well as room to maneuver when visiting their African colonies. However, it seemed that Portuguese reluctantly agreed, and this was how it stayed. But then, a Spanish expedition, King John II of Portugal wanted to make sure he could sail to Africa without too much difficulty, and requested the line be moved to 370 leagues west of Cape Verde. The Spanish, seeing no new islands there, agreed. But, little did either party know, this line made the east coast of Brazil into Portuguese territory – they expanded their influence, and Brazil became the first (and only) South American nation to speak Portuguese.

It seems strange how things work out sometimes. If the Spanish had known what moving that vertical line would have brought Portugal, would they still have done it? Unlikely. But, they did agree to it, and this set in motion a precedent that still stands to this day. It’s the reason why Brazilians continue to speak Portuguese, while the rest of South America is speaking Spanish.

The town that sold mountains to the world

Skiing holidays are one of the most entertaining and popular pastimes these days and represent the pinnacle of snow-based adventures in the Western world. There is nothing more exciting than setting off in the ice and snow and trying to tackle the cold, wintry climbs of a mountainous peak. But, did you ever wonder what it was that made skiing so popular in the first place, and how it came to achieve the popularity it has today?

Well, we can credit this with the Swiss town of St. Moritz, and the English tourists who visited all the way back in 1864. We have to go back in time a little, if we want to understand exactly why St. Moritz plays such a key role in the development of winter tourism. Let’s have a look at the history behind the town that sold mountains to the world.

The change

St. Moritz was always known as a decent hiking destination and not much else. All that changed one fine October evening in 1864, when hotelier Johannes Badrutt challenged his guests to vacation in St. Moritz all year round. Badrutt promised Champagne climates and stunning visual beauty,. And the group returned the following year to find he was right. After winning the wager, word began to spread around England of the stunning St. Moritz, and how it was the perfect winter destination.

Tourism

Pretty soon after this wager had been completed, Badrutt saw year-round tourism come to St. Moritz. The town came alive under the surge of tourism and grew to become a much more accomplished and popular place. The Alps finally had the tourism it deserved, and it was reborn as a result. This place is largely credited as the main reason why the Alps became such a popular vacation destination, and what it was that made it so popular.

Through the years

It’s clear that the Alps has developed as a tourism destination since that time, and Badrutt’s son profited from his father’s gamble, carrying on the family legacy. He opened the luxurious, five-star paradise Badrutt’s Palace in 1896. The hotel is still going strong to this day, and represents much of the luxury and excess you can find in St. Moritz. The Badrutt’s were almost single-handedly responsible for marketing this place to the masses, and turning it into the global phenomenon it is today.

These days

Nowadays, the town of St. Moritz is still one of the most popular, expensive, and opulent winter vacation haunts in the world. There are so many great places you can visit to go skiing or snowboarding, but there are not many that are as iconic as this one. And, just think where would be without this iconic Swiss town – no winter tourism! Hollywood stars have been to the snowy capped peaks of this Swiss town, all in the name of wintry fun!

Winter tourism certainly isn’t for everyone, but, those it is for are looking for luxury and quality, along with some truly stunning views at the same time. It’s important to understand the appeal of places like this, and do as much as you can to experience them. St. Moritz brought the idea of skiing vacations to the masses, and is still experiencing the success of that even to this day.

Mayor of Georgia Town Reportedly Denied Keys to His Office

Screenshot/WXTL

Camilla, Georgia Mayor Rufus Davis has held office since last January. But nearly two years into his mayoral term, Davis claims he’s been denied the keys to his own office.

CBS Atlanta reports Camilla City Council voted not to grant Davis access to City Hall which houses his office.

On Monday, Davis announced that he and newly elected city councilwoman Veterra Pollard, will protest the discriminatory policies that pervade their town by sitting out of city council meetings until change is made.

“There is severe segregation in my city that has persisted for decades,” the former Wall Street executive told “Real Talk” radio show host Rashad Richey.

Davis tells the radio host that there are no Black police officers although Black people constitute 70 percent of the town’s population, nearly all Black people who apply to work at City Hall are never hired and schools are almost fully segregated.

Camilla’s 27th mayor also claims the town’s cemetery is even segregated with a fence separating burial spots for Whites from those of Blacks.

“Although it’s not a written policy, it’s something that is practice,” Davis said of the Oakview Cemetery.

But city Manager Adam Bennett said Davis’ claim is not true.

“Whoever they are, if they come in here, we’re not going to discriminate based on race,” he said. “To my knowledge, we’ve never had anybody come, an African American or another non-white, come in and buy a burial lot in our cemetery.”

But Davis is sticking to his guns and says he won’t attend any upcoming city council meetings until changes are made at Oakview.

“Before we will sit in a meeting, we want the cemetery to be desegregated for starters,” Davis said.

You can listen to the mayor’s interview with “Real Talk” here.

Even in the pelting snow, you can enjoy an evening passeggiata in Modena under the porticos that line all the major streets. Dusk in this Emilia-Romagna town is glorious, with lanterns hanging under arches that are home to lots of cosy bars and cafes. It’s a compact historical centre, thronging at weekends when it’s closed to traffic – a delight just to wander at will, enjoying the lively hubbub. Our favourite place for an aperitivo is Mercato Albinelli, the covered market, which stays open late on Saturday evening. We browsed the stalls, picking up some gourmet treats, then made our way to one of the market’s bars, where you can grab a glass of wine with a platter of local prosciutto and Parmesan for a few euro.

Entire Town Surprise Girl Who Has Life-Threatening Illness With Fireworks Show

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) — Never mind the bitter cold of January. When a sick little girl wanted a fireworks show, people in her northeast Missouri community found a way to grant the wish and crown her “Princess Molly.”

A large crowd assembled near the Mississippi River in Hannibal on Wednesday — despite the below-zero wind chill — to watch the show and support 11-year-old Molly McKinley, The Hannibal Courier-Post (http://bit.ly/1tNayPE ) reported. The Hannibal girl, who has a life-threatening form of ataxia, a neurological disorder, had asked Make-A-Wish Missouri for a trip to Disney World. When her illness made that impossible, the organization sought to give her a Disney-like party in Hannibal, a town of 17,000 residents about 100 miles north of St. Louis, and the community pitched in.

The party and fireworks show were kept a secret, so Molly was surprised when she arrived Wednesday evening at the Mark Twain Brewing Co. on the town’s historic Main Street.

“What are these people doing here?” Molly asked her mother, before members of the fire department escorted her to the second floor for a prime view of the fireworks over the river.

Mayor Roy Hark proclaimed her “Princess Molly of the Kingdom of Hannibal” and gave her a key to the city, the famed hometown of author Mark Twain.

“We all love you,” Hark said.

Ataxia affects the central nervous system, causing problems with balance and coordination. The disease can affect fingers, hands, arms, legs, body, speech and eye movements.

Molly’s mother, Dawn Bricker, said the community’s support for Molly, who was diagnosed four years ago, was overwhelming.

“This is fabulous,” Bricker said.
