Money Mondays: The Ripple Effects Of Trade Tensions

What’s the latest on trade?

We have certainly discussed trade regularly on Money Monday in recent months, but in the last few weeks are beginning to see the effects of trade tensions resulting from some of President Trump’s protectionist policies. On Friday, General Motors warned that the next round of tariffs the White House is contemplating – on foreign cars and car parts, among other things – would kill jobs, lower wages and cause the company to investment less in new factories and other items. GM is not alone among companies that would get hurt, and consumers will be impacted as well. Today, I want to talk about what that looks like, and what we can expect from here based on what we have seen thus far.

Remind us what policies you are talking about?

You may recall that during the 2016 campaign, the President regularly brought up the trade deficit and what he called unfair trade. Once elected, he withdrew from a large free trade agreement with Latin American and Asian countries, and in August of 2017, he launched investigations to determine whether imports from China and other countries could be a threat to national security. Following this, President Trump announced tariffs on imported solar panels and washing machines in January, import tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminum imports in March, and other more specific measures since then. China, the European Union, Canada, Mexico and others have retaliated with their own targeted tariffs on US goods. All of these moves have been rippling through the global economy and affecting consumers and businesses alike.

What effects are we seeing for businesses?

I mentioned General Motors. Another great example of a business being impacted by trade tensions is Harley Davidson. In response the President’s steel and aluminum tariffs, the European Union raised tariffs on a number of American products. One of those products was American motorcycles, which saw import duties rise from 6% to 31% of their value. That comes out to about $ 2,200 in fees for each motorcycle the company sells in Europe. The company has said it will eat those costs to protect their sales volume and brand, costing them up to $ 100 million a year, and it will start building more of its bikes oversea, rather than expanding in the US, and it could see job losses in the long term. These challenges are not unique to Harley Davidson. From nail companies to pork farmers, these trade battles are hurting many American businesses. In addition to tariffs, higher prices on goods like steel means that companies that use these goods have higher production costs.

Are they helping any American businesses?

Some businesses are benefiting, including steel and aluminum producers. Prices for different types of steel and aluminum began to climb almost immediately after President Trump imposed tariffs on the metals, posting the biggest three-month price increase that has been recorded in years. However, it is worth keeping in mind that more lose than gain. As of mid-2017, there were 29,288 steel-consuming firms, employing over 900,000 workers who face higher prices versus just 916 steel-producing firms with 80,000 employees who benefit from those higher prices and reduced competition.

How are consumers being affected?

Americans are starting to see the ripple effects of the trade battles in the form of price increases. Take washing machines; President Trump raised tariffs on imported washing machines to 20% in January. In the months that have followed, prices shot up. The Labor Department’s consumer-price Index, which gauges inflation, found the price of washing machines rose by about 17% over the past three months. Due to higher steel and aluminum prices, we have seen prices rise for everything that requires these materials, from cans of soup to automobiles. General Motors noted new tariffs could drive vehicle prices up by thousands of dollars, and that the models that would see the biggest price increase would be the ones bought by consumers who can least afford one. At the end of the day, tariffs cost all Americans money.

What can we expect going forward?

If trade relations continue to deteriorate, businesses and consumers are likely to suffer, and economic growth is likely to slow. Free flow of goods and capital is important for businesses to grow, and for American consumers to have access to low cost goods. In the extreme, we could see a recession. Let’s hope that cooler heads prevail on the trade front.

Tool of the Trade: When to Trust Online Reviews (Fakespot Review)

when to trust online reviewsI sometimes wonder, “What would I do without online reviews?” because I rely on them so much (for example, as a very frequent Amazon Prime user). When I’m looking for a new bra or shoes or a flash drive or a book (ha, remember when Amazon was about books?), I note the average rating and often read a few of the reviews. At Amazon, I’ll often use “4 stars & up” as a search filter. Recently, I was looking for something for undereye circles, and besides the usual suspects, my search turned up a bunch of products from brands I’ve never heard of — and they had thousands of positive reviews. (Some of the products appeared to be the same ones as others sold under different names, which seemed like a red flag). Around the same time, I came across a site called Fakespot, which proposes to solve the problem of how to spot fake reviews on Amazon and other sites. It quickly analyzes online reviews for Amazon, Yelp, TripAdvisor (especially relevant after its recent controversy), and Apple’s App Store, and grades each one from A–F. A indicates 90%+ reliable reviews and reviewers. After it takes into the account the real vs. questionable reviews for a particular product you enter, Fakespot gives you an “adjusted rating.”

I tested out Fakespot for a few of those eye serums I saw and got some interesting results regarding when to trust online reviews for beauty products:

This post contains affiliate links and Corporette® may earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post. For more details see here. Thank you so much for your support!

  • Pure Biology “Total Eye” – 4.3 rating from 2,997 reviews. Fakespot grade: D — “49.0% of the reviews are reliable.”
  • Organys Rejuvenating Eye Formula — 4.5 rating from 2,475 reviews. Fakespot grade: C — “Our analysis detected
    25.0% low quality reviews.”
  • Baebody Eye Gel – 4.1 rating from 12,860 reviews. Fakespot grade: B. — “Our analysis detected over 80% high quality reviews.”

Compare those results to a review from a more reputable, mainstream brand, Maybelline, whose very popular Instant Age Rewind Concealer has a 4.1 rating on Amazon from 4,124 reviews. Fakespot gave the reviews an A grade and reported, “Our analysis detected over 90% high quality reviews.” (I actually bought the concealer a few months ago and wasn’t a big fan — FWIW, I’ve had better luck with Urban Decay — but it’s hugely popular and people love it, so YMMV.)

As one more experiment, today I checked on the TripAdvisor reviews for a family resort we’ve visited a few times (it has 7,000 reviews) and Fakespot said, “Oh! This is something we haven’t analyzed yet, please wait” and then eventually gave me a server error. The second time, it seemed to be analyzing the reviews for several minutes and … never stopped. Still, as someone who shops online far more than in brick & mortar stores, I’m so glad a tool like this exists.

How do you know how to trust online reviews? Do you use online reviews a lot when you’re making shopping decisions? Do you ever write online reviews yourself? How useful do you find it when a site like Rent the Runway, ModCloth, and Sephora (and Amazon) include customers’ own images on product pages?

Online shoppers constantly wonder when to trust online reviews--so our editor tried Fakespot, a new tool to spot fake reviews on Amazon, Yelp, Tripadvisor and beyond. Great online shopping advice!

This New Lowe’s Employee Program Pays for Workers to Learn a Trade

Less than a month after announcing plans to hand out cash bonuses, enhance benefits and hire 53,000 new workers, Lowe’s has unveiled a new workforce development initiative for its employees.

The home improvement chain is partnering with the Guild Education to launch “Track to the Trades,” a program offering employees financial assistance for trade skill certification.

Eligible part- and full-time employees can receive up to $ 2,500 to complete certifications for skills such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and appliance repair. This will be upfront tuition funding as opposed to a tuition reimbursement plan.

Employees will not only receive the tuition funding to learn a new trade but also get academic coaching and placement opportunities for full-time pre-apprenticeships in Lowe’s contractor network. Participants in these pre-apprenticeships will receive enrollment assistance as well as a field mentor.

This announcement comes at a time when there is not only a shortage of labor in the skilled trade industry but also an increasing demand for experienced construction and infrastructure workers.

Based off a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Lowe’s predicts a skilled trades gap of more than a half million construction-related jobs by 2026.

With the “Track to the Trades” program, Lowe’s aims not only to provide its employees with new career opportunities but also to attempt to bridge that workforce gap.

“Track to the Trades” will debut on March 1 in four pilot cities: Charlotte, North Carolina; Denver, Colorado; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Richmond, Virginia. The program will be expanded nationwide by the end of 2018.

Legal Names vs. Trade Names in Business

business-dba-trade-name

A business name is one of the first things that connects a customer to a company’s products or services.

Businesses pine for catchy, recognizable names that they can use to structure their brand, reach customers, and generate sales. Their goal is to become a household name like Walmart, Amazon, or Disney.

But did you know that many businesses use a second “legal” name on paper that differs from their catchy, household one?

Many companies use legal (or registered) names and trade names (DBA names) for different purposes. In this post we’ll discuss the difference between them, and why a company might use them.

What Does DBA Mean?

DBA is simply an acronym that stands for “doing business as”. It’s a term that refers to a company’s trade name. In other countries like Canada or England, DBA is sometimes seen as T/A (Trading As) or O/A (Operating As), but they all mean the same thing.

For example, Walmart’s trade name is Walmart, but the company’s legal name is Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (which will actually be changing to Walmart, Inc. effective February 1, 2018).

Why Do Companies Have Trade Names?

Typically, a company will have both a legal name and a trade name. Their legal name is the one that appears on government and legal forms, like their Articles of Incorporation—documents a company must file with the state department to legally form a corporation.

Businesses will likely use their trade names for the purposes of sales or advertising. Think of them as almost a nickname for the company.

For instance, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media is branded under the trade name The Disney Store, which is pithier (and less of a mouthful).

Corporations also use trade names to differentiate their brands, especially if they make a variety of products for different demographics.

For instance, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta, and Intermix are all different stores with different inventory, but all of them are registered Gap Inc. brands.

Do I Need to Register a Trade Name?

Some states (like Washington, for example) require businesses to register both a legal name and their trade name to officially conduct business under both, but it’s not a requirement everywhere. The decision to register both is often up to the business owner; however, there are some advantages to trade name registration.

For example, if your clients pay you with checks, having both names registered means that you can open a business checking account under both names and your clients can use either your legal name or DBA name as the recipient. This comes in especially handy if your clients aren’t aware of your legal name.

It should be noted that in some states, registering your name doesn’t always stop other companies from conducting business under that name. Typically, the right to the trade name goes to whoever uses the trade name first in association with their business, not necessarily the first to register.

Choosing a Name for Your Business

Regardless of how much your legal business name might differ from your DBA or trade name, the important thing is that you use them both to your benefit.

At the very least, try to make your trade name clear, catchy, and easy to pronounce, and keep in mind what impressions your name makes on a potential customer.

White House, WSJ Trade Barbs Over Accuracy of Trump Quote

The White House and The Wall Street Journal traded barbs late Saturday and early Sunday morning over the accuracy of quote from President Donald Trump during an interview with the newspaper. “I have a great relationship with Prime Minister Abe of Japan and I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un of North Korea. I have relationships with people, I think you people are surprised,” WSJ quoted Trump as saying. But White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders fired back, and Trump tweeted on Sunday morning that the WSJ misquoted him. “Obviously I didn’t say that. I said ‘I’d have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un,’ a big difference,” he said, adding: “They just wanted a story.” The newspaper posted its own audio recording on Saturday night, saying it stands by its reporting.

China’s Legal Ivory Trade Ends Today

Each year roughly 30,000 African elephants are poached, and many of those deaths have served to provide ivory for the world’s largest market: China.

But starting tomorrow, the sale of almost all ivory will be illegal in China. Ivory carvers and sellers will be permanently closed for business. According to National Geographic, a large-scale public education campaign will also work to inform Chinese citizens that harvesting ivory requires that elephants be killed. A 2007 survey found that 70 percent of Chinese didn’t know ivory harvesting killed elephants.

Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter.

Hunting elephants is illegal across much of Africa, and importing ivory has been outlawed worldwide for nearly three decades, but illegal poaching continues on a large scale. According to NatGeo, that has been attributed to a one-time 2008 purchase of legal ivory for China and Japan’s domestic markets. Research has since shown that supply provided cover for a sharp rise in the flow of illegal ivory.

Representatives of international conservation groups have praised the ban, which was negotiated bilaterally with the United States in 2015. Though ivory is a status symbol for some wealthy Chinese, a survey by the World Wildlife Fund found that 86 percent of Chinese people supported the ban.
