Who Is Supreme Leader Snoke? (UPDATED with ‘The Last Jedi’ Trailer)

Everybody loves a good villain. Whether it’s Darth Vader, Darth Maul, or Emperor Palpatine himself, villains have a way of captivating us even when they scare us. It’s no surprise, then, that fans latched onto Supreme Leader Snoke when he was introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

We know Snoke leads the First Order and is the master of Kylo Ren. His deformed face and ghastly demeanor suggest he could be ancient and incredibly powerful in the dark side of the Force, but we know nothing more beyond that. This leaves fans wondering: who is Supreme Leader Snoke? And will we learn more about him when he appears in the flesh in Star Wars: The Last Jedi?

There are a lot of fan theories circulating that answer these questions. Some we can be fairly certain aren’t true — is he Mace Windu or Darth Maul? Probably not. But here are some of the more compelling rumors about Snoke’s identity.

Is Snoke Darth Plagueis?

Many fans would love it if Snoke was Darth Plagueis, Emperor Palpatine’s Sith master.

Let’s start here, since Darth Plagueis has been the most popular fan rumor for Snoke’s identity. Plagueis was the Sith master of Emperor Palpatine and briefly mentioned in Revenge of the Sith.

Chatter about Plagueis and Snoke being one and the same started after the announcement that Andy Serkis would play the character using motion capture technology, and he was described as tall, thin, and ancient-looking. These are all words that could describe the alien Darth Plagueis.

Serkis was quick to say that Snoke is a new character, and even at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015 when a fan asked Lawrence Kasdan, the co-writer of The Force Awakens, about a connection between the two characters, he responded with a bewildered “Darth Vegas?”

There were even rumors that Rey’s quarterstaff weapon was the staff of Darth Plagueis, once referenced in the non-canon novel Star Wars: Darth Plagueis.

In the film itself, Kylo Ren says that “the Supreme Leader is wise.” Perhaps this is a reference to Darth Plagueis the Wise, the story told to Anakin Skywalker when Palpatine seduced him to the dark side in Revenge of the Sith?

Odds are, Plagueis will not be making a comeback in the sequel trilogy. Though there is something intriguing about the idea of Palpatine’s master, spoken of only in legend, being the true architect of evil all along.

Is Snoke Gallius Rax?

Gallius Rax intended to use the Battle of Jakku to give rise to a better, stronger Empire.

Star Wars novelist, Chuck Wendig, introduced Gallius Rax in the Aftermath trilogy, which tells the story of how the New Republic defeated the Empire in the year after Return of the Jedi. Rax was Palpatine’s protege ever since the Clone Wars and had the responsibility of carrying out Palpatine’s Contingency orders. The Contingency was created in the event of the Emperor’s death and had one central idea: if the Empire cannot protect its Emperor, it doesn’t deserve to survive and had to be destroyed.

Rax planned to use the Battle of Jakku as a way of destroying the Empire and the New Republic, and then lead the few chosen surviving Imperials into the Unknown Regions to start again. The Empire had been charting the Unknown Regions for years, using the knowledge of Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Emperor’s scouts.

However, Grand Admiral Rae Sloane killed Rax and prevented him from fully enacting the Contingency, and the Republic won the battle, but Sloane led the surviving Imperials into the Unknown Regions. It was there that they founded the First Order, which is why some fans have wondered if Rax, the architect of what became the First Order, could be Snoke. But unless he’s just faking his death, we can assume it’s not him.

Is Snoke the Ancient Sith Emperor?

Fans of the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic have wondered if the Sith Emperor, known as Vitiate and Valkorion, could be the identity of Supreme Leader Snoke. This ancient Emperor lived during the first war between the Jedi and the Sith and rebuilt the defeated Sith into an empire that brought the Old Republic to its knees. His true goal, however, was to live forever and reshape the galaxy how he wanted it to be.

The Old Republic is a non-canon storyline, so it’s doubtful we’ll see its primary villain revealed as Supreme Leader Snoke, but with the transmedia storytelling involved at Lucasfilm, it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility. There have also been hints that Snoke has lived for a very long time and has seen everything that transpired during the previous six films, suggesting he could be ancient. In the novelization of The Force Awakens, Snoke tells Kylo Ren about how he watched the Empire rise and fall and that he wants to create something stronger than the Empire ever was.

Is Snoke A New Power From Beyond the Galaxy?

The Aftermath trilogy also revealed that the Emperor was obsessed with the Unknown Regions. It called to him. Yupe Tashu, an advisor to Palpatine before the Emperor’s death, was a dark side historian and argued that the future of the Empire was in the Unknown Regions, where the First Order ultimately came to power. He said that Palpatine believed his power came from beyond the known galaxy, and so the Emperor sent teams into the unknown to learn more about it. Tashu argued that the Empire should “seek the source of the dark side like a man looking for a wellspring of water.” Only Palpatine sensed his power. Not even Darth Vader could, suggesting it was an extremely powerful force.

All of the Aftermath trilogy’s talk about the Unknown Regions and its powers suggests that these are not off-hand comments or meant only for the rebuilding of the Empire into the First Order. If there was a power beyond the known galaxy, a power that had been there throughout the events of the previous films, could that be Supreme Leader Snoke? He is from or influenced by the source of the dark side itself, so will we learn more about this in The Last Jedi?

This would fit with Serkis saying Snoke is a new character, and it would mean that the seeds for Snoke’s arrival and true nature have already been planted in the post-Return of the Jedi storyline. It’s for these reasons that this is the most credible Snoke theory so far.

Four years ago, mankind canceled the apocalypse in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. Next year, the apocalypse strikes back in the sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising. The follow-up actually takes place 10 years after the plot of the original, as the Jaeger program continues to employ giant manned robots in the protection of Earth from large monsters called kaiju. The new trailer for “Pacific Rim: Uprising” has arrived, and John Boyega is here to stop the apocalypse

The new trailer for “Pacific Rim: Uprising” has arrived, and John Boyega is here to stop the apocalypse

The new trailer for “Pacific Rim: Uprising” has arrived, and John Boyega is here to stop the apocalypse

Well friends, Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and the rest of the Jaegers did all they could to stop the invasion of the Kaiju during the Battle of the Breach in Pacific Rim, but it seems the alien monsters are back and ready to trigger the apocalypse…unless John Boyega has anything to say about it.

The new trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising was just released.

And it looks like the Jaeger pilots of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. are about to face-off against the most terrifying Kaiju the Earth has ever seen. John Boyega stars as Jake Pentecost, son of the late Jaeger commander Stacker Pentecost (Elba), an ex-Jaeger pilot who teams up with his adopted sister Mako (Rinko Kikuchi, reprising her role from Pacific Rim) to take down the Kaiju forever (until a potential third film, of course).

In the 10 years following the Battle of the Breach, all appears well on Earth — until all hell breaks loose and the world descends into a fiery pit of chaos, that is.

But Jake and Mako aren’t facing off against the Kaiju alone. Joining them in the fight are fellow Jaeger pilots Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood), Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny), and Liwen Shao (Jing Tian) as well as Kaiju experts Dr. Newt Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, with Charlie Day and Burn Gorman reprising their roles from the first film.

Unfortunately, Charlie Hunnam was unavailable to reprise his role as the heroic Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket, but it’s safe to say that the word is in pretty capable hands. At least, we hope.

“We were born into a world at war, between the monsters that destroyed our cities and the monsters we created to stop them,” Jake says, giving a go at his best President Whitmore-style pep talk. “We thought we had sacrificed enough. But the war we thought we finished is just beginning. And the only thing standing in front of the apocalypse…is us.”

The threat is bigger than ever before — with Geiszler admitting the kaiju have evolved, while Gottlieb, who probably isn’t trying to be a pessimist, announces that they could potentially wipe out all life — but the Jaegers are armed with better weapons, including glowing electric whips, rocket-launching guns, and the coolest electric swords you’ll see all day.

Brace yourself for the apocalypse when Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters on March 23rd, 2018.

New ‘Happy!’ Trailer Is Demented, Amazing, and Very NSFW

Happy! might be the new show I’m most stoked about. Based on the graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson, Happy! tells the story of Nick Sax. Nick is an ex-cop turned hitman and he’s about as sleazy as you can get. After a botched attempt on his life, Nick is resuscitated and finds he can now see a tiny blue unicorn named Happy.

Happy is the imaginary friend of Hailey, a little girl who has been kidnapped by an evil Santa Claus for… well, let’s just say it’s ugly stuff. Happy wants to try and get Nick to save Hailey and maybe find a little redemption in the process.

It’s a grimy, gonzo, gory, and goofy story. And now, we have our best look at the series yet in the form of a new trailer.

Warning! This Trailer Is Pretty NSFW!

WOW. This looks nuts. The series director is Brian Taylor, one of the co-directors of Crank. I’ve sung Crank‘s praises before and this looks like a fun continuation of Taylor’s manic approach to filmmaking. If it’s even half as bonkers as Crank, then we’re in for a hoot. Plus, he just put out the Nicholas Cage horror-comedy Mom and Dad (read our review) and it looks like he might be on a roll.

The graphic novel is a self-contained story and it seems like the first season of Happy! intends to tell that entire tale. Exactly how the show intends to go beyond one season could be difficult, but I trust the talent involved. Grant Morrison is on board as executive producer and writer, and I’ve already thrown my hat in with Brian Taylor. but how about that cast? Christopher Meloni and Patton Oswalt as the leads? Sold.

I’ll be screening the first episode of Happy! later this week at New York Comic-Con. My hopes are very high. I’ll let you know what I think. And you can watch Happy! when it premieres on Syfy on December 6.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Breaking Down the Full Season Trailer

Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from the first two episodes Star Trek: Discovery. Proceed at your own risk.

The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery have officially aired (whether you watched them on the CBS All Access app or internationally on Netflix). They presented a contained story that ended in the death of a key character — Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). Her death came at the hands of the Klingons, who had set a trap for Georgiou’s crew, the U.S.S. Shenzhou. The leader of the Klingons, T’Kuvma, was also killed, as was a Federation Admiral. The episode ended with First Officer Michael Burnham being court-martialed for mutiny and the Klingon/Federation war launching into full force.

The trailer below picks up sometime after the events of the first two episodes. Burnham is in prison and the war is raging. Somehow, Burnham gets recruited by Captain Gabriel Lorca and joins the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery. Let’s break down where Star Trek: Discovery is headed this season.

Welcome to the War

The first shot in this trailer shows Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) in what seems to be a prison transfer. A women tells her the death toll of the war, which Burnham corrects, down to the exact number. This scene is reminiscent of two other sci-fi franchises: Star Wars Rogue One and Battlestar Galactica. In Rogue One, adult Jyn Erso is first seen on a prison transfer. She is rescued by the Rebellion in order to find her father. In this trailer, Captain Lorca recruits Burnham, in order to help win the war. The similarities here are very clear. In Battlestar Galactica, President Roslin keeps track of how many survivors there are aboard the convoy. While Roslin’s numbers are tracking lives saved, Burnham is tracking lives lost. Also during the trailer, a Federation officer tells Lorca that this entire war is Burnham’s fault. Since Burnham is counting the death toll, she must feel that fault as well.

All Aboard the Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Captain Lorca
Jason Isaacs is Captain Gabriel Lorca.

We didn’t meet Lorca (Jason Isaacs) in the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, but we definitely meet him here. Despite Burnham being tried and found guilty of mutiny, Lorca wants her on board his ship. His crew does not seem thrilled, especially Saru, who survived the destruction of the Shenzhou. Why does Lorca want her? “I have something on deck that requires every trained mind available.” Apparently the Discovery has discovered something — something so important Lorca is willing to bring someone as dangerous as Burnham on board.

A Mysterious Substance

This mysterious substance will give Burnham and the Discovery’s science team something new to study.

As the trailer progresses, Burnham starts to notice an unusual substance. In one scene it looks like small, gel orbs. In another scene, it looks like an atrium full of plants. In the canon of Star Trek, ships discover new life forms and technologies all the time. Will this substance change how we view Star Trek? Does it have to do with terraforming (a process explored in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan)? Does it have to do with shapeshifting matter, as it did with Odo and the Founders on Deep Space 9? Is it the “space fungi” Anthony Rapp was referring to during press at San Diego Comic-Con? Whatever it is, Lorca is willing to have Burnham’s presence on his ship to study its capabilities. He even says in the trailer, “Imagine the possibilities,” does he mean, the possibilities of the substance? Could it help them win the war?

Klingon Honor

Leader of House Kor, Kol is played by actor Kenneth Mitchell.

According to tradition, dying in battle is a Klingon‘s greatest honor. Now that T’Kuvma is dead, other Klingons are taking up his cause to unite the 24 houses. Some will even hail him as Kahless, the spiritual leader of Kronos, reborn. In the trailer, you can see a new Klingon leader — a female named L’Rell (Mary Chieffo) and Kol (Kenneth Mitchell) the leader of House Kor. They must take up T’Kuvma’s cause now that he is dead. They must find T’Kuvma’s Klingon Bird of Prey Sarcophagus ship, because that is also visible in the trailer.

Meet Mudd

star trek discovery harry mudd
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ will give us the backstory of fan favorite character, Harry Mudd.

If you’ve ever seen The Office, you may have recognized actor Rainn Wilson right away. He’s playing Harry Mudd on Discovery. Like Sarek, Mudd is a classic Star Trek character. He first appeared on Star Trek: The Original Series in an episode titled “Mudd’s Women” and then again in “I, Mudd.” In the trailer, Mudd is antagonizing the Federation, asking them if they ever think of the little people. We assume he’s talking about the bystanders, the casualties of war. It’s hard to say what role he’ll be playing in the series, but on ST: TOS he was a smuggler, a gambler, and an all around trashy guy. Definitely not someone to be trusted.

Whether you’re curious about the space fungi, learn why Lorca puts his trust in Burnham, or want more Klingons, it looks like Star Trek: Discovery has a lot of adventure in store for the rest of the season.

Star Trek: Discovery uploads new episodes to CBS All Access Sundays at 8:30EST/5:30PST.

First ‘Tomb Raider’ Trailer Is a Mixed Bag, But That’s Okay

Tomb Raider is a film that has fans thoroughly intrigued. The new movie takes inspiration from the 2013 reboot of the franchise. It’s a far cry from the pulpier and campier tone of the original game and the Angelina Jolie films.

Well, that influence looks to be in full force in the new film. Check out the trailer and stick around for some analysis.

Some Good, Some Bad

This first look is something of a mixed bag. There is a lot of positives though. The biggest takeaway is that the movie’s visual style looks fantastic. Director Roar Uthaug — director of the solid disaster film The Wave — has brought an appropriate amount of propulsive flair to this world.

And the cast is on point. Alicia Vikander looks like the perfect actor to step in Lara Croft‘s boots. She’s tough, beautiful, and proven herself as a phenomenal actress in films like Ex Machina and The Danish Girl. Plus, having Walton Goggins as Mathias and Dominic West as Lord Richard Croft helps this all feel like a step above most video game adaptations.

But, the plot and dialogue seem a little cheesy — that line about closing the tomb? — and the action can’t help but have that video gamey, untethered physics feeling. Some might argue that that’s an integral part of the property, but look at how Assassin’s Creed tried to do the same thing. It didn’t work out then. Will it work better in Tomb Raider?

Still, this looks like it will be a fun ride. If they can manage to bring in some of the surprising brutality and survival intensity that the 2013 game did so well, this could be an adventure movie worth your time. This has to work for both fans of the game and general audiences. That’s a tough balance to strike.

We’ll find out if Tomb Raider can please both worlds when it swings into theaters on March 16, 2018.
