Olympic Gymnast Aly Raisman Has ‘Barely Worked Out’ After Larry Nassar Sexual Abuse Trial

(BOSTON) — Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman says she’s barely been able to work out since going public with allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of a former sports doctor.

The six-time Olympic medalist told The Improper Bostonian magazine, for a cover story published this week, that she’s still regrouping and recovering after confronting former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar.

“In the past few months I’ve barely worked out, which for someone who loves working out, that’s saying a lot,” the magazine quoted Raisman as saying.

The 24-year-old Raisman, captain for both the gold-medal winning 2012 and 2016 U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics teams, says she was abused by Nassar in multiple locations beginning in 2010, including at the U.S. national team training facility in Texas and at the 2012 Games in London. Hundreds of other women and girls have said they, too, were sexually assaulted by Nassar.

Nassar pleaded guilty to molesting women and girls under the guise that he was treating them for injuries. He is serving sentences that likely will keep him in prison for life.

Raisman, of Needham, Massachusetts, said she initially felt she was receiving medically necessary treatment by Nassar before realizing it was abuse. She has said she subsequently battled shame, guilt and depression.

“I could hold it together in court or whatever, but then I could barely hold my head up afterward,” she told the magazine, adding: “I’m constantly reliving my abuse.”

Raisman said she’s determined to continue speaking out on behalf of women who are abused or otherwise victimized.

“I feel grateful that I’m being listened to and I’m being heard, because I’ve met so many people who have said, ‘I spoke up but nobody listened,’” she said.

“I would like to be remembered for standing up for the right thing. It’s always more important to do the right thing than to win medals. I’d like to change this generation and the next generation so that by the time I have kids, everyone will be educated, so a child never, ever has to say the words, ‘Me too.’”

Suge Knight’s post-Death Row Records struggle life continues as the New York Daily News is reporting that the former H.N.I.C. was transferred to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center on Tuesday (April 3) and remained there until Thursday morning.

At a criminal court hearing last month Knight, 52, complained about his deteriorating health with the judge overseeing his murder case offered to sign a medical order submitted by his lawyer. Relatives of Suge told the Daily News that Knight suffered from dangerous blood clots and even had an emergency appendix surgery in March 2016.

Since his arrest for a fatal hit-and-run in 2015, Knight has been rushed to the hospital multiple times by ambulance and this most recent one is just the latest. Knight has pleaded not guilty to the charge insisting he was the victim of an ambush. Suge is currently on his 16th lawyer after his last counsel was hit with accessory to murder charges.

Suge is due back in court on April 23.

‘I Thought I Was Going to Die’: Read McKayla Maroney’s Full Victim Impact Statement in Larry Nassar Trial

Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney said former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse began when she was 13 or 14 years old and scarred her in ways that “may never go away.”

The gymnast’s victim impact statement was read aloud in court on Thursday as part of the multi-day sentencing hearing for Nassar, pleaded guilty in November to seven counts of criminal sexual contact with underage girls.

“As it turns out, much to my demise, Dr Nassar was not a doctor, he in fact is, was, and forever shall be, a child molester, and a monster of a human being. End of story!” Maroney wrote in her statement. “He abused my trust, he abused my body and he left scars on my psyche that may never go away.”

Maroney first spoke out about the abuse in October, and since then many other gymnasts have come forward to share similar experiences as the USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal continues. More than 100 women and girls are expected to speak at Nassar’s sentencing hearing, which will extend to next week, according to the Associated Press.

Maroney’s statement comes despite a confidentiality agreement she signed as part of a $ 1.25 million settlement with USA Gymnastics. USA Gymnastics said it would not enforce the $ 100,000 fine it could have imposed on Maroney for speaking out about the abuse.

Here is the full text of Maroney’s victim impact statement.

For as long as I can remember, gymnastics was my life. As a child, my mom said, “I need to put this child in gymnastics, to tire her out.” You could say I was in gymnastics since the age of 18 months. I’ve always felt comfortable in the gym, sort of my home away from home.

I was 7 years old for my first competition. I remember getting ready for the meet. I got my hair braided with a cool bow, and some sparkles. I got to wear this really awesome leo, and wore a matching warm-up. Life was good, I looked good… and I was pretty certain that one day I’d be heading off to the Olympics!

The Olympics is something that brings people hope and joy. It inspires people to fight for their dreams, because anything is possible with hard-work and dedication. I remember watching the 2004 Olympics. I was 8 years old, and I told myself that one day I would wear that red, white, and blue leotard, and compete for my country. Sure, from the outside looking in, it’s a remarkable and amazing story. I did it. I got there, but not without a price.

I made the US National Team at the age of 14, and began to compete throughout the world for my country. When I first met Larry Nassar, he was the doctor for our National Team and our Olympic team. I was told to trust him, that he would treat my injuries and make it possible for me to achieve my Olympic dreams. Dr. Nassar told me that I was receiving “medically necessary treatment that he had been performing on patients for over 30 years.”

As it turns out, much to my demise, Dr Nassar was not a doctor, he in fact is, was, and forever shall be, a child molester, and a monster of a human being. End of story! He abused my trust, he abused my body and he left scars on my psyche that may never go away.

It all started when I was 13 or 14 years old, at one of my first National Team training camps, in Texas, and it didn’t end until I left the sport. It seemed whenever and wherever this man could find the change, I was “treated.” It happened in London before my team and I won the gold medal, and It happened before I won my Silver Medal. For me, the scariest night of my life happened when I was 15 years old. I had flown all day and night with the team to get to Tokyo. He’d given me a sleeping pill for the flight, and the next thing I know, I was all alone with him in his hotel room getting a “treatment.” I thought I was going to die that night.

Because the National Team training camps did not allow parents to be present, my mom and dad were unable to observe what Nassar was doing, and this has imposed a terrible and undeserved burden of guilt on my loving family.

Larry Nassar deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison. Not only because of what he did to me, my teammates and so many other little girls — He needs to be behind bars so he will never prey upon another child. I urge you to impose the maximum sentence upon him.

Ever since I went public with my story, I have been inspired and uplifted by the love and support of my former teammates, fans and many other good people.

People should know that sexual abuse of children is not just happening in Hollywood, in the media or in the halls of Congress. This is happening everywhere. Wherever there is a position of power, there seems to be potential for abuse. I had a dream to go to the Olympics, and the things that I had to endure to get there, were unnecessary, and disgusting.

I was deeply saddened by the stories of my fellow Olympic teammates that suffered as I did at the hands of Larry Nassar. More than 140 women and girls had to say, “#MeToo” to Nassar’s sexual assaults and hundreds more were victimized to create the pornographic images that fueled his evil desires.

A question that has been asked over and over is: How could have Larry Nassar been allowed to assault so many women and girls for more than two decades?

The answer to that question lies in the failure of not one, but three major institutions to stop him — Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics and the Untied States Olympic Committee.

When my story became public the US Olympic Committee said, “Each doctor working with our athletes undergoes background checks including an evaluation of medical licensure actions. Unfortunately, this predator was not identified by any organization during the time in question.” Reports in the Nation’s leading newspaper and media outlets document credible claims that Michigan State University trainers and coaches received complaints about Nassar going back to the late 1990s. These complaints were ignored.

Nassar was note even licensed to practice medicine in Texas, yet he “treated” and abused girls at the Karolyi Ranch Olympic Training Center in Huntsville, Texas for more than 15 years.

In 2014, Nassar was the subject of a Michigan State University investigation based on additional complaints of sexual misconduct. This botched investigation concluded that Nassar’s actions, which he has now admitted were sexual assaults, were legitimate medical treatments. He was allowed to go back to work at Michigan State University and continue molesting girls. USA Gymnastics and US Olympic Committee were never informed of this investigation.

When other Olympic and National Team athletes complained to USA Gymnastics about Larry Nassar in 2015, he was allowed to retire as the Olympic Team doctor and Michigan State University was never informed of the complaints against him.

He returned to Michigan State University and allegedly continued to molest young girls until he was finally arrested nearly a year later.

A simple fact is this. If Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic Committee had paid attention to any of the red flags in Larry Nassar’s behavior I never would have met him, I never would have been “treated” by him, and I never would have been abused by him.

It is my hope that federal and state law enforcement agencies will not close the book on the Larry Nassar scandal after he receives his just punishment. It is time to hold the leadership of Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee accountable for allowing, and in some cases enabling, his crimes.

Our silence has given the wrong people power for too long, and it’s time to take our power back.

New Study Consistent with Trial Results for dabigatran and Warfarin in Atrial Fibrillation

OAKLAND, Calif. — A study of two medications that can reduce risk of ischemic stroke in people with atrial fibrillation showed that outcomes in typical patients with atrial fibrillation align well with those seen in clinical trials. The findings are being published today in Annals of Internal Medicine.

This research, led by Alan Go, MD, director of the Comprehensive Clinical Research Unit within the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, marks the first major study to examine outcomes of therapies for atrial fibrillation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Sentinel Initiative, a national multi-institution network to monitor the safety of new medical products after they reach the market.

photo of Alan Go, MD

Alan Go, MD

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm that increases ischemic stroke risk. To reduce this risk, patients often receive treatment with the blood thinner warfarin, which has been in use since the 1950s, or a newer alternative such as dabigatran, approved by the FDA in late 2010.

The analysis showed that both medications were associated with similar rates of ischemic stroke and overall bleeding. However, people taking dabigatran were less likely to experience bleeding in the brain, which can be dangerous or deadly. These findings were consistent with the results of prior clinical trials that compared the two drugs.

“Our study provides reassurance that stroke-related outcomes seen with dabigatran in selected trial participants translate into usual clinical care for patients with atrial fibrillation,” Dr. Go said. “Importantly, while risks of ischemic stroke were similar for dabigatran and warfarin, dabigatran was safer from the standpoint of a lower risk of brain bleeds.”

The study also addressed heart-attack rates associated with each drug, but the results were inconclusive. Patients on dabigatran were more likely to experience a heart attack than patients on warfarin, but the statistical strength and consistency of this finding was unclear.

“The jury is still out,” Dr. Go said. “We need more research to rule out the possibility that there might be a higher risk of heart attack with dabigatran in certain patients, such as those who are older and men.”

National collaboration

The analysis incorporated data from 50,578 adults aged 21 and older with atrial fibrillation. Half started dabigatran and half started warfarin between November 2010 and May 2014. To ensure a fair comparison, patients taking dabigatran versus warfarin were statistically matched according to similar demographics, use of additional medications and many other characteristics.

Patient data was contributed by eight Sentinel collaborators: Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Washington, Aetna, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, HealthCore, Inc., HealthPartners Institute, Humana Comprehensive Health Insights, Inc., and Optum: Optum Epidemiology.

“The Sentinel program enabled us to look at adults of all ages — not just older patients — who received care across a variety of settings,” said senior author Joshua Gagne, PharmD, ScD, of Harvard Medical School. “Ours isn’t the first study to address this question outside of clinical trials, but it is the most wide-ranging and nationally representative.”

Future research should examine which types of patients benefit most from which stroke-prevention strategies, Dr. Go said. Indeed, the new study mirrored prior clinical trial results showing higher rates of gastrointestinal bleeding with dabigatran in older patients and those with kidney disease, emphasizing that warfarin is likely still a better choice for some.

Dr. Go’s research is now looking at how different patient characteristics might affect ideal treatment choice to optimize outcomes for atrial fibrillation.

This research was funded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Sentinel Initiative.

In addition to Dr. Go and Gagne, co-authors in the study were: Sue Hee Sung, MPH, of Kaiser Permanente Northern California; Daniel E. Singer, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital; Sengwee Toh, ScD, of Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare Institute; T. Craig Cheetham, PharmD MS, of Western University – College of Pharmacy; and Marsha E. Reichman, PhD, David J. Graham, MD MPH, Mary Ross Southworth, PharmD, Rongmei Zhang, PhD, Rima Izem, PhD, Margie R. Goulding, PhD, Monika Houston, PharmD, and Katrina Mott, MS, of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Judge Throws Out Former DJ’s Lawsuit Against Taylor Swift in Groping Trial

(DENVER) — A judge on Friday threw out a former radio host’s case against Taylor Swift in a trial that delved into their dueling lawsuits over whether he groped her during a backstage meet-and-greet and whether she and her team ruined his career.

U.S. District Judge William Martinez determined that the pop star could not be held liable because David Mueller failed to prove that she personally set out to have him fired after the 2013 photo op in Denver. His identical allegations against Swift’s mother and her radio liaison will go to jurors for a verdict.

Mueller denies groping Swift and sued the singer, her mother, Andrea Swift, and their radio handler, Frank Bell, seeking up to $ 3 million as compensation for his ruined career.

The singer-songwriter said in her countersuit that she wanted a symbolic $ 1 and the chance to stand up for other women. The jury will still consider her claim.

Swift teared up as the judge read his decision and said there was no evidence of her actions being insincere. Afterward, her team smiled and embraced. Mueller’s side didn’t speak.

“I couldn’t be more proud to represent somebody like Taylor Swift who’s willing to step up in a situation like this,” attorney Douglas Baldridge said outside court.

The judge’s decision came after days of testimony from the singer and others and just before jurors were set to hear closing arguments.

Swift spent an hour on the witness stand Thursday defiantly recounting what she called a “despicable and horrifying and shocking” encounter before a concert.

“He stayed attached to my bare ass-cheek as I lurched away from him,” Swift testified.

“It was a definite grab. A very long grab,” she added in her testimony.

Swift’s testy exchange with Mueller’s attorney occasionally elicited chuckles — even from the six-woman, two-man jury. She got a laugh when she said her security guard saw Mueller “lift my skirt” but someone would have had to have been underneath her to see the actual groping — “and we didn’t have anyone positioned there.”

Swift testified that after the photo was taken, she tried to get as far away Mueller as she could. She said she told him and his girlfriend, who was also in the photo, “thank you for coming” in a monotone voice before they left.

She also said she was stunned and did not say anything to Mueller or halt the event after he left because she did not want to disappoint several dozen people waiting in line for photos with her.

In the image, shown to jurors during opening statements but not publicly released, Mueller’s hand is behind Swift, just below her waist. Mueller’s then-girlfriend, Shannon Melcher, is on the other side of Swift. All three are smiling.

Melcher testified Friday that she saw nothing happen during the brief encounter and that she and Mueller were rudely confronted and escorted out of the arena that evening. Melcher said Mueller was devastated by the accusation.

She said she and Mueller started out as co-workers at country station KYGO-FM and became romantically involved in February 2013, a few months before the concert. They drifted apart late in 2013, but Melcher says they remained friends.

Some of Bill Cosby’s TV Family from The Cosby Show Will Support Him in Court During Sexual Assault Trial

Actress Keshia Knight Pulliam will appear at court in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Monday with her former TV dad Bill Cosby when he goes on trial for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting former Temple University employee Andrea Constand, Cosby’s spokesman tells PEOPLE.

Pulliam, 38, played Cosby’s daughter Rudy on The Cosby Show.

And she’s not the only person who will be appearing at court.

Actress Phylicia Rashad, 68, who played his wife on The Cosby Show, will make an appearance at some point during the trial as well, Wyatt says.

Representatives for Pulliam, Rashad and Taylor could not immediately be reached for comment about their attendance at the trial.

Johnny Taylor, president of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, will also appear at the courthouse with Cosby and Pulliam, says Andrew Wyatt, Cosby’s spokesman.

“Johnny feels Mr. Cosby has done so much for historically black colleges over his career and it’s important for him to show that support and say ‘Thank you’  because he has not been found guilty of anything,” Wyatt tells PEOPLE. “They’re coming in to hear the truth. Keshia feels the same way. She’s not here to proclaim guilt or innocence. She’s here to finally hear the truth for herself in the courtroom. She wants people to stop listening to the sensationalism and come hear the truth.”

Pulliam and Rashad have made public comments supporting the veteran comedian.

“I can only speak to the great man that I know and love, who has been so generous, who has been such a philanthropist, giving back millions of dollars to education and schools,” Pulliam told Access Hollywood Live in January 2015.

Cosby, 79, goes on trial Monday for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting former Temple employee Andrea Constand in January 2004. He has pleaded not guilty and denies similar allegations from more than 60 women. The trial is expected to last two weeks.

The Cosby Show aired from 1984 to 1992 on NBC and was one of the biggest TV hits of the 1980s.
