This type of exercise may help relieve depression

Strength training is good for your body and your mind, according to a new review of more than 30 previously published studies.

The paper, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, found that resistance exercise training (RET), such as weightlifting and strength training, is associated with a significant reduction in depressive symptoms. It also, of course, comes with physical benefits, like making bones stronger and preventing chronic conditions.

Brett Gordon, the paper’s first author and a postgraduate researcher in the department of physical education and sports sciences at Ireland’s University of Limerick, stops short of calling resistance training a cure for depression, but he says the findings are compelling, especially since it’s accessible, affordable and possible to do at home.

And it seems to work as well as the frontline treatments for depression — antidepressants and behavioral therapies — Gordon says in an email to TIME. Because the study was based on past research, however, it wasn’t possible to tell from this paper exactly why that might be the case, or to prove a definitive cause-and-effect relationship. But other research suggests that by increasing blood flow to the brain, exercise can change the structure and function of the brain, create new brain cells and trigger the release of mood-enhancing chemicals like endorphins.

Gordon and his colleagues analyzed 33 clinical trials — including nearly 2,000 people in total — that examined the effects of resistance exercise training on symptoms of depression. Across the board, they found that strength training was associated with improvements in depressive symptoms such as low mood, a loss of interest in activities and feelings of worthlessness, regardless of a person’s age, sex, health status, specific exercise routine or improvements in physical strength.

“Interestingly, larger improvements were found among adults with depressive symptoms indicative of mild-to-moderate depression compared to adults without such scores, suggesting RET may be particularly effective for those with greater depressive symptoms,” Gordon says.

Since the researchers saw improvements associated with a wide range of strength-training programs, Gordon says he can’t name a single best exercise regimen for your mental health. (There was, however, some evidence to support the effects of supervised routines shorter than 45 minutes.) He recommends following the guidelines provided by the American College of Sports Medicine: doing strength training at least two days per week by performing eight to 12 repetitions of eight to 10 different strength-building exercises each time.

While the current review specifically examined resistance training, plenty of evidence suggests that other forms of physical activity, such as aerobic exercise, cardio and yoga, may also improve depressive symptoms. A secondary analysis included in the JAMA paper also found no significant difference in the effects of RET versus aerobic exercise for alleviating depressive symptoms, Gordon says.

Of course, the factors that dictate mental health are complicated. Lifting weights may not be enough to wipe out depressive symptoms entirely, and it can be difficult to find the energy or motivation to start a new exercise regimen if you’re already struggling with depression. Nonetheless, Gordan says the new review adds weight to the argument that resistance training can be a powerful tool for improving mental health.

There’s a new type of iPhone cracker available, and cops are dying to buy it

GrayBox iPhone hacking 2018 how to break

In 2016, the FBI’s legal quest to force Apple to unlock the iPhone 5c of the San Bernadino shooter brought the issue of phone encryption fully into the public conciousness. Although people generally knew that smartphones were secure, it wasn’t until the highly public court case that people realized even the country’s top law-enforcement agency couldn’t easily crack basic consumer hardware.

Trying to break the encryption on the iPhone is a constantly-evolving cat-and-mouse game, and not many law enforcement agencies are capable of taking part. Rather than hiring their own cryptographers, law enforcement around the country instead buys “exploits” from hacking firms, who sell their technology to anyone who can pay tens of thousands of dollars. A new type of iPhone cracker, called the GrayKey, is a simple-to-use box that can reportedly crack the latest iPhone X running iOS 11, and as you’d expect, cops are lining up to buy it.

What to Wear for Every Type of Headshot, According to a Photographer

Depending on your line of work, getting your portrait taken can be a necessary factor of landing a major job or role. And of course when the time comes to update your photo, it can be a daunting task to decide what to wear for your headshots.

Anyone who had to decide what to wear for their school photos remembers how stressful getting dressed for portraits can be. From ensuring not to date yourself with the trends of today to portraying the specific message you want to send to future onlookers, there are lots of little worries that could come up. Which is why we tapped photographer Heather Hooton to provide her professional input for the best things to wear to land the job.

First, determine what your photos will be used for and who your audience is. “If it’s for a corporate job where you’ll be in charge of a lot of people, opt for a blazer or a structured top. If it’s a creative job where you’ll be communicating with a lot of clients, try a more flowy or open blouse,” Hooton tells us. She also shares that it’s important not to date yourself with trending statement pieces, as you’ll ideally be using these photos for years. “Choose classic pieces with a modern flair.”

Hooton also emphasizes the importance of keeping your ensemble simple. “The key is to not distract from your face, so avoid loud patterns,” she says. “The safest bet is a solid color, but if you’re really a print girl, a smaller or subtler pattern. With that in mind, you can still get creative. Hooton suggests that if you’re hoping for a promotion, incorporate your company’s colors into your outfit. Finally, add more depth to your photo with a necklace or two.

Whether you’ve got a big audition coming up, or you’re gearing up for a major promotion, shop some of our favorite portrait-ready pieces that will help you succeed in any role.

Nothing says dressing for the job you want like a power blazer. Available in sizes XS to XL.
This boxy blazer will make you look so professional yet not stuffy. Available in sizes 00 to 14.
This pleated top is structured enough but also shows your personality. Available in sizes XXS to L.
The twist detail adds more interest to your outfit. Available in sizes 10 to 20.
This print is bold, but not so much it’ll distract from your face. Available in sizes FR 34 to FR 44.
This classic top will always look great. Available in sizes XS to 4X.
A cardigan over this would be perfect if you don’t feel comfortable bearing your shoulders. Available in sizes 10 to 16.
You’ll want to wear this all season long. Available in sizes S to L.
You can never go wrong with black. Available in sizes XS to L.
A simple sweater with an intriguing detail. Available in sizes L to XXL.

How to Get the Right Hat For Your Face Shape & Body Type

As you can imagine, people have all kinds of different heads and head shapes with sizes and unique features. When we dress, we always try to highlight the attractive features and flatter or improve the look of the areas that are not so advantageous.

It’s the same thing with hats; not every hat is suited to every face shape and body type. Sadly, this kind of knowledge has vanished from societies and even at the hat store, often, they won’t be able to tell you about it.

How Do I Know About It? I have vintage hat books and magazines, and I went through them and saw great discussions of hat retailers, and so I’m going to share all that knowledge with you.

Hats For Larger Gentlemen

If you have a small hat like with a not so wide crown and a very short brim, it makes the person look automatically bigger; so that’s something you should always avoid. On the other hand, a larger hat makes everything more proportional, more suitable, and the wearer doesn’t look oversized.

The same is true for the hat band. Ideally, you go with something quite wide that has a very low contrast to the hat, in the same color. You want to choose a crown that is not too high but more of a medium height with a pinch not so much in the middle because you want to avoid a pointy look.

You much either want to go for a little pinch more towards the sides that is not too accentuated because then it’s a more harmonious look with your fuller body.

If you’re a bigger gentleman and you want to snap your brim down, that’s okay but rather than having just a slight snap, try to snap it all the way down and get a really deep snap, that way it suits your silhouette more. The brim should be rather wide, at least two and a half inches which is about six and a quarter centimeters.

Fedoras are a great hat for larger men, and so are Homburg hats with a certain size. As I said, choose the hat band ideally in a color very similar to your head, so there’s a low contrast.

Hats For Short & Slim Gentlemen

If you’re shorter, you’ll always benefit from wearing a hat because it elongates your body and makes you look taller. Rather than having a rather wide crown, it pays to have it pinched to a point because it just flatters your short silhouette more. Also, rather than going with a tone in tone hat band, it pays to switch it up for something that’s contrasting.

A pointed pinch is the way to go

A pointed pinch is the way to go

If you’re shorter, you always want to avoid to have your brim snapped and much rather have it face up; the simple reason for this is when a viewer looks at you, and your brim is curled up or sideways, it gives the perception of elevation and height which is exactly what you want. Also, rather than going with wide-brimmed hats, it pays to go with something shorter.

Again, pinch on top works and the higher the crown, the better. Ideally, you want a brim that is less than 2 inches or 5 cm, however, if it gets too short, and the crown gets too low, you may appear like a boy so always try to go for that high crown and slim curl up brim.

If you take a big hat with a wide brim and a taller crown, it makes the wearer even smaller which is something you always want to avoid.

Hats For Tall & Thin Gentlemen

Ideally, you don’t want to accentuate your height even more which means don’t go for a high crown. Instead, go for medium to low crowns. Also, you want to opt for a contrasting hat band because it visually separates the top part of the hat from the bottom part and so overall, it makes you look shorter than you are. Of course, you don’t look short, but it looks more harmonious on your hat.

The brim should be about 2 inches or 5 cm wide and you want to step it down. Also, rather than wearing your hat straight, it can pay to simply tilt it to one side for a more elegant look that is more harmonious and proportional.

In a nutshell, if you are tall and slim, you should avoid tall crowns and matching hat bands. Instead, go with something contrasting. Likewise, do not wear a short-brimmed hat that is curled up because it makes you look taller. Instead, go for a somewhat wider snap brim hat that is more appropriate and that little tilt just helps to tie it all together.

Facial Features To Consider When Choosing A Hat

A snapped down hat for men with bigger noses

A snapped down hat for men with more prominent noses

Prominent Nose

If you have a big nose, the most important thing is the width of the brim. You want something that is at least as wide as your nose so usually about 2 and a half inches or more. If you go with a custom hat, you may even decide to have a brim that is wider in the front than in the back. If you get something off the rack, that is not an option you have.

Rather than having it curled up, you want to snap it down. Rather than going for a very pointy pinch, go for something that’s a little wider. Slim brims that are snapped up or just slightly snapped down are your enemy because they will just accentuate the size of your nose.

If you have a receding chin, avoid a full crown

If you have a receding chin, avoid a full crown

Receding Chin

If you have a receding chin, go with hats that are not too extreme. A hat can’t help to make the chin disappear, but it can help to level everything and make it look harmonious.

So that means, opt for a hat with a medium crown and a slight pinch that is not too pointy but also not round. Go for a medium wide brim that is slightly snapped to the front.

Again, it’s very flattering to tilt the hat slightly to one side. Make sure to avoid a big hat and a full crown because that will just highlight your receding chin, likewise, don’t snap your hat too much because it’s not an advantageous look for you.

If you have chiseled features, skip the tilt

If you have chiseled features, skip the tilt

Chiseled Features

Now if you have chiseled features, you want a hat with a slight pinch on the crown that is not too small and you want a nice deep snap. It’s definitely best to not tilt your hat but keep it straight so everything looks more proportional.

In order not to highlight your chiseled features, I urge you to stay away from a very tall crown or a very slim brim.

Slim brims are unflattering for round faces

Slim brims are unflattering for round faces

Round Face

Similar to those who have a stronger built, it pays to go with something that is not too slim. Regarding crown height, go with something medium and a matching headband that is not too small.

A larger brim works better for you so don’t get anything under 2 inches or 5 centimeters, I’d even go to at least two and a half inches or six and a quarter cm.

If you like to snap your brim, the fedora hat is the right choice. Otherwise, you can also go with a Homburg hat. If you’re a man with a round face, avoid getting hats that are too small.

You don’t want something that has a pointy crown, and you also don’t want to have a very slim brim that is not snapped down all the way; just makes you look goofy and disproportionately large.

Small and lifted brims only highlight your protruding ears more

Small and lifted brims only highlight your protruding ears more

Protruding Ears

Now if you have protruding ears, it’s very important that you have a wider brim that is snapped down and not snapped up. The brim is important because it doesn’t highlight the size of your ears or the shape, but it rather helps to cover them up. Opt for a wider crown that is not too pointy, although a little point is alright.

Also, go with a wide hat band that’s ideally somewhat contrasting because of your ears, it pays to not just snap down the hat in the front but also in the back. If you have protruding ears, you want to avoid small hats with shorter brims and anything that is pointed up.

Because of that, a Homburg hat is not the right hat for you because it’s curved up and it just highlights your ears and it just stands out and it’s just not a flattering look. The most important thing is that you the wide brim is always snapped down.

What Hat Work with your face and body type - Infographic

What Hat Work with your face and body type – Infographic

If You Get Conflicting Information, Don’t Get Confused!

First of all, I suggest you go with the facial features first because the head is closest to the face. Next up, look at your body type; for example, if your face shape calls for a whole crown but you’re also a slim and tall man, maybe bring the crown height down, so it doesn’t accentuate your height even further.

Also, maybe go with a contrasting hat band, so it visually separates the top part from the hat in the bottom which makes it look shorter.

Hats For A Big Head

Ideally, you want something that is proportional to your size so don’t go with something too small, but rather with a nice sized hat and with a nice pinch on top. You also want to go with a headband that’s not too wide but also not too slim, you can have it slightly snapped down in the front and snapped up in the back. It’s always good to tilt the hat to the side slightly, just makes it look more elegant. Same is true for snapping up the front part of the brim, makes your head even look bigger.

So if you have a bigger head, avoid a wide crown, avoid a large contrasting headband, because they’re both things that make your head look even larger. Overall, it really pays to experiment with different hat shapes which are most easily done at a hat store because there; you get the full selection.  If you buy online, they may look great in the picture but it may not be great on your head.

Personally, I think it’s okay to have a range of different hats for different purposes, in slightly different shapes, because depending on the outfit you have, the hat can also have a different appearance and impression on others. The good thing is if you follow these rules, you will end up with a hat that flatters your face and your body and you can focus on things like the edge finishing, or the color, or maybe the material.

What’s your go-to hat? Now that you know the rules, have you considered switching to a different hat for a change?

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

My Husband Is a Slob and Thinks I’m Type A

Reader Married to the Slob writes:

My husband thinks I have a chronic problem of trying to do too much and that my expectations of myself and everyone else are too high. I think he needs a kick in the ass because he is SO laid-back. The only reason we haven’t killed each other yet is because he is too lazy to follow through and I am too overwhelmed to bother with it.

He grew up in a household where no one cleaned or had a bedtime or anything so my normal standards for what is acceptable seem sky-high to him. His dad is a hoarder, so his standards for clean are very low. He is so laid-back and I have trouble just sitting and relaxing. I have always been a busy type person.

I guess I have high standards when it comes to a few things: I shower daily, I keep our kids clean, I go to the gym and try to take care of myself but I am in NO WAY a perfectionist. My husband showers like 2-3 a week and he never exercises. He does make me happy and I do love him, so these things just sound nit-picky.

We went to marriage counseling to sort out some of these issues after our first child was born. We now have 3 children ages 6, 3, and 1. I stay home with them. Our oldest is in school most of the day. We do not have a cleaning lady or any extra help; I keep our 2500 square foot house in order, in addition to cooking and laundering 5 people’s worth of food and clothes. I do all of the grocery shopping. I am happy that I can stay at home, but it’s just a LOT. Meanwhile, he is a huge slob … there are literally ants living in his car. They’ve been in there for 8 months.

In counseling we learned that I am anxiety-prone (duh) and he has adult-ADHD (not surprising). We both took medication for awhile and got on track and have learned coping mechanisms that have carried us up to this point. We are both no longer on medication, but I wonder if:

1. We SHOULD BE on meds?
2. Additional stress of me trying to have a writing “career” or “hobby” has put us in a bad place because I am unable to keep up with everything on my own?
3. I’m going to flip out one day and have a nervous breakdown?

I know this is a common issue but I don’t know what steps I should take so resentment doesn’t continue to build. I just feel irritated with him all of the time and I hate it! I definitely don’t want to be “that” wife.

Dear MTTS,

Well, given the general tone of your letter, it sounds like you’re certainly still suffering from anxiety. No shame in that.  In fact, over 18% of Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder.  Why not go back on your meds?  It may cut down on some of your feeling of impending nervous collapse.   And why does your husband not go back on his ADHD meds?  This makes a huge difference in many ADHD marriages, my own included.  Honestly, it also sounds like you might have ADHD as well, but hyperactive type.  ADHD people often find one another, and have very intense courtships.  This may explain how you can never sit still and seem to be a perpetual motion machine.  So get evaluated for that as well.

Next, why not resume your marriage counseling?  It sounds like it was very helpful and informative.  You don’t have to go for a year straight, but it sounds like you can use a tune up.  Plenty of couples do this in my practice, it’s not one and done.  You guys had two great support mechanisms in place: meds and counseling, and now you’re not using either.  Why?  Are there lingering issues of shame about needing meds or therapy?  Please reconsider.  And whether or not your writing is causing stress is something only you can answer, hopefully with a clearer head from going back on your meds and seeing a counselor yourself.

Next, I feel for your husband having grown up with a hoarder parent.  Read a guest post about this here.  It can be traumatizing.  It also colored his view of what’s “normal,” as any type of dysfunctional family does.  In our Western society, it is not normative for an adult male to shower 2-3 times a week.  I am just guessing here, but I would imagine that this impacts your intimate life.  This would be a great thing to tell him as lovingly as possible, particularly if it would lead to an increase in frequency of sex.

You and your husband need to be able to communicate using more empathy and validation for one another’s perspectives.  This is something great to work on in counseling.  You seem to love one another but the relationship has become fraught with irritation and possibly even contempt on both sides. You owe it to yourselves and your kids to work this out now, through meds, counseling, individual therapy, and whatever else you need to make it work.

Good luck, and keep me updated.  Till we meet again, I remain, The Blogapist Who Says, As One to Another, You Sound Type A, But That Showering Thing Isn’t Helping Anybody.

What ‘Type’ of Planner Will You Need?

There are many types of planners to choose from when you decide you want to hire one for your Big Day. No, I’m not talking about “Day of” Coordinator or Full Planner, but rather the kind of planner you and your fiancé will match with best.

Below is a list of the types of planners that are out there, and it’s up to you to decide which one is a match for you! Kind of like picking out a pair or shoes, or your favorite vodka. Whatever.

The Overenthusiastic Newbie

Ok, I know this isn’t about experience versus no experience, but the newbie has their own category. This planner knows nothing and no one — but really wants to plan your wedding at a cost of three gold stars and a reference letter. She will have no contacts to contact, and will have trouble negotiating contracts on your behalf. However, she is ready to go and will probably answer your emails within 30 seconds of you sending them. You can save money here, but if you’re high maintenance and want your ducks in a row, you might want to steer clear of this one. Otherwise your ducks will be dead and in orange sauce. That went sour.

The Queen Bee

This planner knows everyone, but not everyone wants to know her. She’s there for you and only you, and doesn’t care if she upsets venues or vendors. You are her client and she will die for you. Ridiculous requests? No problem, she will handle them. If she can’t handle them, she will never tell you that your requests are difficult, but rather that everyone else is incompetent. She’s on your side 100 percent, even when you’re wrong, and you’ll find her in the kitchen at the venue when your salmon comes out over-cooked. If you want someone like this, great. Be warned though: While she’s on your side always, she’s probably not making many friends in the industry. That translates to no favors for you when your requests become even more difficult.

The Olivia Pope

First and foremost, if you don’t know who that is, walk away from this blog, go watch all four seasons of Scandal on Netflix, and then come back. I’ll wait. Anyway, this type of planner that emulates Ms. Pope has it all handled. She’s not afraid of a fight and wants to get your day done perfectly for you. Sure, she might be intimidating, but you know that she’ll get the job done, even if she has to lose her temper. Of course, this also means telling you when you’re out of line, and scolding you when you miss appointments, make ridiculous demands or don’t get back to her when you need to. The plus side is that you’ll never know when there’s an issue with your planning, because she will handle everything. As long as you can handle her being as direct with you as she is with those working on your wedding, you’ll be fine.

The Pleaser

A planner can’t do everything because not everything is possible. While a good planner won’t tell you that things are impossible, they will make it clear when things are difficult. The pleaser only knows how to say “yes” and “can do” and refuses to learn the words “no” and “not happening.” While this is reassuring, sometimes this planner will make promises that she can’t keep, and while there usually is a way out of a jam, when there isn’t, she (and you both) are screwed.

The Designer

Depending on what you want, a designer planner might be exactly what you need. This planner is all about your color, theme, and total decor. Logistics aren’t really where her head is at. She can tell you every flower that is in season, what draping to hang from the walls, and has more Pinterest boards than you can imagine. If you are clueless when it comes to what linens pair with what what china, this is the planner that would be perfect for you. But, if you need help with your budget and negotiating contracts, or putting together a timeline, then the artist might not be in your best interest.

The Old Timer

These are planners that have been around forever. They know the owners of every venue hall, and the new owners as well. If you ask them “have you ever worked with” and the answer isn’t a quick “yes,” that means that vendor or venue hasn’t been around for that long. It’s great to have this planner in your back pocket because they are going to have a rolodex worth paying for. Of course, people don’t really change and as much as they may evolve over time, this planner might be a little old fashioned. Sometimes they won’t be all about the email as you will be, and will prefer to talk on the phone. Texting them? Probably not going to happen. And before anyone sends me nasty notes that established planners know how to use email, trust me, I know… but I do know plenty that don’t, and it’s enough to mention.

The Can’t Wed, Can Plan

You’ve all seen the movie, The Wedding Planner — the story of a planner that isn’t married, but can plan a wedding to rival anything in the top magazines. She’s well put together, got a keen sense of style, a huge contact list and is a master negotiator. But she’s not married and really has no intention to be. This is not the same as the planner who wants to be married, this is a planner who chooses not to be. While she might be great at her job, if she’s never experienced a wedding firsthand, how can she possibly understand the stress you are under as you plan your Big Day? The passion might be there, and she might be a wizard, but she’s never *been there*. Seeing it, is different than doing it. Your wedding can be flawless with this planner, but if you need someone who can empathize with your stress, you should look for the one with the ring on her finger.

Those are the top seven types of planners out there. Sometimes there is a crossover of personalities, and sometimes a planner is just one type. Matching you and your fiancé to the right type is essential to having a happy planning process. Trust me: You’ll be able to tell during the consultation just what category your planner falls into.

And in case you’re wondering — I’m the Olivia Pope type!
