Vanessa Grimaldi Says ‘It’s Okay to Feel Broken’ After Split from The Bachelor’s Nick Viall

Vanessa Grimaldi has spoke out for the first time since her split from Nick Viall.

“It’s okay to feel broken. It’s okay to cry,” she captioned an Instagram photo Monday of herself overlooking a pond while leaning on the shoulder of a friend.

“It’s okay to lean on a friend,” she continued. “In the end, it will always be okay.”

Viall, 36, and Grimaldi, 29, broke up Friday, five months after their proposal aired on ABC.

“It’s with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement,” they said in a joint statement. “We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn’t been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other.”

Viall appeared on two previous seasons of The Bachelorette and season 3 of Bachelor in Paradise before taking his turn as the lead suitor earlier this year. While he asserted he finally found the one, even before getting engaged, L.A.-based Viall and Canadian Grimladi struggled to decide where they would continue their relationship.

“I haven’t been able to go to Montreal outside of the show,” he previously told PEOPLE, adding that they weren’t rushing to plan their wedding. “I think we’re just focused on that right now. We’re very open about the fact that we have a long way to go and we’re excited about that journey.”

Following their split, a source close to the pair told PEOPLE that they were never on the same page.

“Their friends knew the relationship wouldn’t last,” said the source. “It was a mismatch from the start. She’s super fun, bubbly and outgoing and he’s more of a serious personality and more introverted. She would try to bring him out of his shell, but he’s just not as comfortable in big groups.”

Viall is handling the split “okay,” the source added. “It wasn’t an overnight decision, and they’re amicable.”

The Bachelor’s Kristina Schulman Says She’s Now ‘Come to Peace’ After Nick Viall Unexpectedly Sent Her Home

On Monday, Nick Viall came face-to-face with a handful of his ex-girlfriends during the Women Tell All episode of The Bachelor — including sweet Kristina Schulman, who Viall shockingly sent home during their trip to Bimini.

“I didn’t necessarily get the closure when I was getting sent home,” Schulman exclusively told PEOPLE at the February taping. “I was looking forward to the time that I would have on the Women Tell All to talk to him. In the time that I was sent home to now, I’ve come to my own conclusion. I’ve come to peace. Anything that he would’ve said during the Women Tell All made a difference because I was at peace.”

After a successful one-on-one date — where Schulman shared her emotional story of being a foster child in Russia and moving to the United States — the connection between the pair was undeniable. However, according to Viall, it wasn’t strong enough.

“I felt so strongly for Kristina,” Viall wrote in his blog. “She melted my heart in so many ways, but I just knew deep down I had stronger connections with the other women. I couldn’t stand the idea of taking Kristina further only for it not to work out. As hard as it would be to say goodbye to her now, it would have been 100 times harder for both of us if I took a leap and then said goodbye in another week.”

Though things didn’t work out between the two, Schulman is still open to finding love.

“Doing The Bachelor truly opened up my heart and my mind to the possibility of love,” she said. “It’s been about two years since my last relationship and I think in that time I was kind of closed off and reserved. I just got comfortable with myself. Taking this leap of the faith and being on the show and constantly talking about feelings and emotions, it was actually really therapeutic. I feel as if my heart is open. I’m very open to meeting that person.”

The Bachelor airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
