Today’s Emmy nominations prove why HBO’s new owner wants it to make a ton more shows

HBO Vs Netflix

“I want more hours of engagement.” Those were the marching orders that John Stankey, CEO of HBO’s new parent AT&T, gave in recent days to the broadcaster famous for taking a curated approach to television. The remarks came during a town hall that generated a ton of media coverage — apparently, everyone assumed, this means HBO will now be forced to play a volume game which may or may not affect the quality of the content.

What ‘So Money’ Host Farnoosh Torabi Wants You to Know About Credit Scores

Do you know your credit score?

Better question: Are you sick of hearing us tell you over and over how important it is to check your credit report and know your credit score?

It may seem like we’re beating a dead horse, but the truth is, you can’t ball on a 450 credit score, and we’re committed to putting more money in your pocket so that you can be the baller you’re meant to be.

A survey released by the Consumer Federation of America and VantageScore suggests the advice is working. The percentage of respondents who said they’ve obtained their credit scores in the past year rose from 49% in 2014 to 57% in 2018.

Credit expert Farnoosh Torabi, who hosts the “So Money” podcast, says she isn’t surprised.

“There’s been momentum building ever since the recession,” she told The Penny Hoarder.

News coverage of rising interest rates impacts lending, which trickles down into people’s credit lives and wallets.

Another aspect fueling the rise is easy access to credit scores.

“I’ve been covering personal finance for all of my career, and back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, there was no go-to place to get your credit score as a consumer,” Torabi said. “But now, there are more ways to access it.”

Great, You Know Your Credit Score. Now What?

Knowing your credit score is nice and all, but it means very little if you don’t do anything about it.

But you all are doing something about it.

The number of people who’ve checked their credit score has increased, and so has the number of people taking steps to increase their scores, according to year-over-year findings from Chase Slate’s 2017 credit outlook survey.

These steps include paying off debt, keeping credit usage low and making an effort to pay down credit statements in full.

We can all agree it’s easier to take the initial steps to improve your finances when you know what’s going on and exactly what you need to do.

A Lot of People Are Still Confused About Credit

The Consumer Federation study showed large majorities could correctly identify three key factors used to calculate credit scores:

  • Missed payments, 86%
  • High credit card balances, 81%
  • Personal bankruptcy, 79%

But significant minorities incorrectly thought that age (41%) and marital status (38%) are used in this calculation.

“Some people think the older they are, the better their credit score will be,” Torabi said. “I think they confuse that with the length of their credit history.”

A lot of people also incorrectly believed tax liens (64%), medical collection accounts less than 6 months old (62%) and civil judgments (63%) are used to compute credit scores.

Most people knew steps to take to improve your credit score, but little more than half (56%) knew all of them.

Here’s Why Credit Scores Are So Important

“Largely we think of credit scores and their ties to qualifying for homes, loans and credit cards, but there’s other stuff, too,” Torabi said. “I think if [people] knew the extent to which [their] credit score actually makes an impact, it would make people more interested to see what their credit score is, and learn how to improve it.”

When you sign up for cable plans or insurance, providers will often do a credit check to make sure you’re paying your other bills on time. And if you’re renting, landlords and property managers will also run a credit check and review your credit score.

But the biggest reason to know your score has nothing to do with what you want to do in the future. It’s all about what you’ve done — or rather, haven’t done — in the past.

Credit reporting mistakes and identity theft are common occurrences, and they’re not going away anytime soon.

So even if you’re not planning on buying a house, financing a car, or opening a credit card in the near future, it’s still super important to know your credit score and monitor your credit report.

At The Penny Hoarder, we publish no shortage of articles telling you why you should check your credit score, how to improve your credit score and how amazing life has gotten since so-and-so raised their credit score.

Maintaining healthy credit is just like maintaining a healthy body.

“If you’re trying to stay healthy in your physical life, you should get on that scale and face that number, as hard as it can be,” Torabi said. “Numbers don’t lie. [Your credit score] will give you the honest truth, and from there, you can improve.”

Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Amanda Nguyen Wants A Survivors’ Bill of Rights in Every State

Amanda Nguyen felt “powerless, invisible and betrayed” when, after a four-hour forensic sexual assault examination for evidence extraction following her rape in 2013, law enforcement officials proceeded to attempt to destroy her rape kit before the statute of limitations had expired. The 25-year-old activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee wrote the Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act in response, which was added to the federal criminal code by President Obama and approved by unanimous vote in Congress in 2016.

The Survivors’ Bill of Rights specifically and explicitly states that survivors have the right for their rape kit to be preserved for the length of the case’s statute of limitations, the right to be notified if an evidence kit is set for destruction and the right to be notified of the results of their rape kit. On Tuesday, the Federal Judiciary Committee SD-226 met to discuss its implementation with Nguyen and actor Terry Crews.

“I never thought that I’d be made to suffer a greater injustice than what I went through on the day that I was raped,” Nguyen shares on her foundation’s website. “Growing up, I’d believed in those familiar American promises: that our rights were sacred, that everyone was equal in the eyes of the law, and that the legal system existed to right wrongs and restore justice. It was only after my ordeal that I discovered firsthand the ways in which rape survivors are continually re-victimized and betrayed by our country’s failure to make good on these promises.”

After speaking with other survivors, Nguyen discovered that she wasn’t alone—and she was extremely frustrated with the double standard in place for sexual assault survivors. “It isn’t fair that survivors have different rights,” she told Ms. Other felony crimes, such as murder cases, have their evidence boxes maintained indefinitely; convicted rapists also have the right to preserve the evidence kit for the duration of their time serving out a sentence. Nguyen heard from women in various states that their rape kits, too, had been destroyed prematurely; in other states, reports show that rape kits are left untested by the hundreds.

After writing the Survivors’ Bill of Rights, Nguyen launched the non-profit RISE with the goal of enacting similar Acts in each state.(Nguyen has created an action plan for activists hoping to push state lawmakers to do just that.) Because most sexual assault cases are handled by state law enforcement, the federal bill of rights is more of a guideline and an attempt to raise awareness on the issues affecting survivors.

“The problem is that the Act applies only in federal sexual assault cases, and not in state cases where the vast majority of sexual assaults occur—that is, unless the individual state has passed the Act,” Adrienne Lawrence, a California attorney and victim advocate, told Ms. “Just 14 states have passed the Act so far, which means a number of sexual assault victims across the nation do not and will not have guaranteed rights. Failing to ensure survivors have adequate rights undermines the notion that our justice system is as committed to ending the crime of sexual assault as it is to ending other forms of crime. The Act is necessary because, in a number of states, victims are not informed about what will happen with their rape kits and the kits get destroyed, which basically destroys evidence of a crime and limits the victim’s ability to get justice.”

Luckily, the bipartisan Survivors’ Bill of Rights has faced little opposition when proposed in various legislative bodies; according to Nguyen, one of the largest hurdles to passing the legislation in the states has been ignorance. “People don’t understand how broken the system is for survivors,” Nguyen told the committee. During Tuesday’s committee meeting, she and Crews met with state legislators to impress the importance of proposing these Acts state-by-state. “Justice should not depend on geography,” Nguyen told lawmakers. “Bring these [laws] back to your communities.”

Brie Larson wants to see more film critics of colour rather than just ‘white dudes’

‘I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him out of a Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him.’

Rob Latour/Variety/REX/Shutterstock

As the inner workings of Hollywood have slowly come to light with the Me Too movement out in full force and more minority representation trickling onscreen, things seem to be gradually changing for the better. From Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins smashing box office records to Get Out becoming the most profitable film last year and even an Arab female director scholarship raising POC voices, Brie Larson has highlighted one overlooked area that needs to be worked on next.

Namely, the mainly white and male industry of film journalism.

Brie was honoured with a Crystal Award for Excellence in Film the other night and used her speech to draw attention to the issue. She quoted a recent study of review site Rotten Tomatoes, saying, ‘67 percent of the top critics reviewing the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2017 were white males; less than a quarter were white women; less than ten percent were underrepresented men. Only 2.5 percent of those top critics were women of colour.’

brie larson film criticism

Matt Baron/REX/Shutterstock

But you might be wondering, why does that matter? Well, given that the US population is much more diverse than that (‘30 percent white men, 30 percent white women, 20 percent men of colour and 20 percent women of colour’) and it’s impossible not to have your own upbringing/identity affect your reviews in some way – it only make sense that we need more diverse voices speaking about films. Especially when they’re films especially aimed at minorities, as Brie pointed out.

Using the recent film Wrinkle in Time directed by black female director Ava DuVernay, she explained, ‘I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him out of a Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him. I want to know what that film meant to women of colour, to biracial women, to teen women of colour, to teens that are biracial. These are just facts these are not my emotions. I want to know what my work means to the world, not a narrow view.’

brie larson film criticism

James Shaw/REX/Shutterstock

Brie was very careful to bring up not once, but three times that she wasn’t saying that white male critics shouldn’t have a voice as she said repeatedly, ‘Am I saying I hate white dudes? No I’m not.’

She continued, ‘What I am saying is that if you make a movie that is a love letter to women of colour, there is an insanely low chance a woman of colour will have the chance to see your movie and review your movie. We need to be conscious of our bias and make sure that everyone is in the room.’

The entire room apparently broke out into rapturous applause, according to Deadline. Brie also explained that this was a really crucial issue for her, because it was basically off the back of favourable reviews of her film Room that her career exploded.

‘Good reviews out of festivals give small independent films a fighting chance to be bought and seen,’ Brie said. ‘Good reviews help films gross money. Good reviews slingshot films into awards contenders. A good review can change your life. It changed mine.’

brie larson film criticism

Andrew H. Walker/REX/Shutterstock

Brie (and Sundance Film Festival and TIFF through her) dropped the mic however when she revealed that the two festivals would be committing ‘at least 20 percent of their top level press passes’ to ‘underrepresented critics’.

She then called on other films to do the same in their press screenings and coverage by reaching out to three underrepresented males, three white females and three underrepresented females so that the ‘average critic pool would match the US population in just five years’.

She ended, ‘Female and underrepresented critics can’t review what they don’t see. Many are denied accreditation or access to press screenings. Please make sure that these invites and credentials find their way to more underrepresented journalists and critics, many of whom are freelancers.’

Louisa Johnson wants to model

OHMYGOSSIP — Louisa Johnson would love to start modelling.
The 20-year-old singer – who won the 2015 series of UK talent competition ‘The X Factor’ – has been told several times on social media that she resembles successful model Kendall Jenner, and has admitted she’s already signed to modelling agency and wouldn’t mind trying her hand at the career choice in the future.
Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz at Capital’s Summertime Ball in London on Saturday (09.06.18), she said: “I’m with a modelling agency, so maybe we should just start doing a bit more of that. Why not? Why not, I’m open to anything.”
And the ‘Best Behaviour’ hitmaker also shared some important advice for anyone hoping to follow in her footsteps with a life in the spotlight.
She said: “You just have to stay true to yourself the whole time. I feel like I was very up and down with that kind of thing, and you just realise when you do come out the other side that it’s very important to just say what you believe in, and do what you want to do. Because at the end of the day, you’re the one on stage and you’re the one making the decisions. So yeah, you need to just stay true to yourself.”
Meanwhile, Louisa isn’t the only musical star thinking about a change of career path, as fellow singer Paloma Faith admitted she’d love to dive back into acting after previously having roles in movies including ‘St Trinian’s’ and ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’.
Also speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, the ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ hitmaker said when asked if she’d ever go back to acting: “Do you know what, yeah. If my agent could start doing some work I’d definitely be up for it. [I’d be in] anything.”

‘No One Wants the Invite Anyway.’ LeBron James and Steph Curry Say Their Teams Won’t Visit White House

(CLEVELAND) — Stephen Curry and LeBron James spoke their minds last year. They have not changed their minds this year.

No matter whose team wins the NBA championship, neither superstar will be at the White House anytime soon.

On the day when the Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be there to commemorate winning the Super Bowl — a visit that was canceled by President Donald Trump and had the White House accusing players who weren’t planning on attending of abandoning their fans — Curry and James were among those speaking out at the NBA Finals in support of the Eagles.

“I’m not surprised. It’s typical of him,” James, the Cleveland star, said of Trump’s decision to cancel. “I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite anyway. So it won’t be Golden State or Cleveland going.”

On the eve of Game 3 of the Warriors-Cavaliers series, politics dominated the conversation.

Curry raised Trump’s ire last year when he said he wouldn’t go to the White House, prompting the President to disinvite him and the champion Golden State Warriors.

Curry said Tuesday that he spoke with a current Eagles player about the team’s decision-making process and how it went deeper than disagreeing with Trump policies and the ongoing issue of some NFL players choosing not to stand for the pregame playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“It’s an important conversation, but you can’t control what other people try to do, or try to control the narrative or things like that,” Curry said.

Curry said the team has been on the same page after his comments last year and Trump’s subsequent revoking of the Warriors’ invitation. “And every team that’s won a championship since then has gone through that.”

There has been clear tension between many star athletes and the current administration throughout the Trump presidency. Trump has often blasted the NFL players who have kneeled for the national anthem, a protest that started in 2016 when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick did so to protest racism and more specifically the killing of black men by police.

Trump said the Eagles’ event was called off because some of their players “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.”

No Eagles players kneeled during the anthem last season.

“Instead the decision was made to lie, and paint the picture that these players are anti-America, anti-flag and anti-military,” the Eagles’ Malcolm Jenkins wrote in a statement posted to social media Tuesday .

The WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx haven’t been invited to celebrate their most recent title, something James called “laughable.” Villanova, the reigning NCAA men’s champion, has not revealed if an invitation was sent. Many members of the U.S. Olympic Team that competed earlier this year in South Korea did not attend a White House reception.

Hockey’s Pittsburgh Penguins and baseball’s Houston Astros have accepted invitations to the White House for the traditional meeting with the President in recent months, as have several college teams. When the New England Patriots went last year, half the team chose not to attend.

The Warriors, in lieu of going to the White House, spent that day taking a group of children to the National Museum of African American History and Culture a few miles away.

“I think the President has made it pretty clear he’s going to try to divide us, all of us in this country, for political gain,” said Golden State coach Steve Kerr, who has often criticized Trump and his policies. “So it’s just the way it is. I think we all look forward to the day when we can go back to just having a celebration of athletic achievement and celebrate Americans for their achievement, their good deeds.”

Kerr also lauded the Eagles for being what he called “fantastic citizens in their own community.”

“It will be nice when we can just get back to normal in three years,” Kerr said.

The overwhelming issue surrounding the Eagles’ planned visit was that most of the team was not going to attend, and that was a major factor in Trump deciding to pull the invitation.

“What else do you expect Trump to do?” Golden State’s Kevin Durant said. “When somebody says they don’t want to come to the White House, he disinvites them. So the photo op don’t look bad. We get it at this point. But it’s good that guys are sticking to what they believe in and what they want to do. Like guys said before me, I’m sure whoever wins this series won’t be going.”

Apple should take a page from Netflix’s playbook if it wants to succeed in TV

Apple Vs Netflix

Over the last few years, Netflix has undergone a rather impressive transformation. In what seems like a blink of an eye, Netflix morphed from a company that mailed out DVDs into a bona-fide streaming juggernaut with a market cap that now exceeds Disney. At the core of Netflix’s streaming success has been its obsession with churning out an endless stream of original content. As Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos explained a few years ago, Netflix’s goal was to “become HBO faster than HBO can become us.”

While Netflix appreciated the importance of having a large catalog of original programming across a multitude of genres, the same can’t be said of Apple. At this point, it’s no secret that Apple has a genuine interest in the TV space. After the lackluster rollout of Planet of the Apps and the needless remake that was Carpool Karaoke, Apple has since taken its TV efforts far more seriously by inking a number of deals with high-profile individuals like Damien Chazelle, the mastermind behind hit films like La La Land and Whiplash. Still, Apple only has about 13 planned shows at this point, a fact which 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch categorized as nothing more than a “dabbling.”

Joanne Lipman Wants Men to Join the ‘Me Too’ Movement

Cindy Ord/Getty

The “#MeToo” and “Time’s Up” movements, spurred by revelations of horrific and possibly criminal misconduct by politicians, business icons, and Hollywood figures—along with festering sexual harassment and porn star-fling allegations against the putative leader of the Free World—have prompted a global discussion concerning the challenges women face both in and out of the workplace.

They have also inspired a collective case of nerves among men, some in high places, who are currently conducting anxious self-inventories of their actions and attitudes and re-assessing the magnitude of past transgressions.

“With all this talk about sexual harassment, there’s a lot of men who are asking questions like, ‘What do I do now?’” Joanne Lipman told The Daily Beast. “And there’s a lot of men who are now looking at their past behavior and saying, ‘Did I? Can somebody come back to bite me? Could this come back to haunt me? Did I do something 10 years ago that now I’m going to get in trouble for?’ There’s a lot of concern out there.”

4 Bra-Fitting Tips an Expert Wants You to Know

According to Fitzgerald, styles that once worked for you may no longer do your figure justice—especially if your body’s gone through significant changes. Be open to trying on different styles, cuts, and sizes.

Shopping for bras, no matter what size you are, is likely the last thing you want to do. Between navigating the right size and finding a style that makes you feel cool and confident underneath it all, it’s a tedious task. However, if you have the right bra-fitting tips, it can make things a whole lot easier.

Let’s face it—there’s nothing more uncomfortable than an ill-fitting bra. After all, it’s one of the reasons we can’t wait to remove them at the end of the day or go into the braless territory is to avoid the lingerie piece altogether.

We looked to Tiffany Fitzgerald from The Lace Lounge in Los Angeles for her best tips to make sure you get the right bra fit. When you have these in mind, finding the perfect bra that feels comfortable and looks great will be a breeze. Check out her tips now.

This is so pretty under a tee. Available in sizes XS to L.
You’ll feel so confident with this on. Available in sizes 40E to 42D.

This color is everything. Available in sizes S to L.
How cute are these little dots? Available in sizes 32C to 36E.
Everyone needs a pretty strapless bra. Available in sizes 32A to 36D.
Because you need a basic bra for your everyday. Available in sizes 32A to 38D.
A longline bra is a nice alternative to your regular pick. Available in sizes 32B to 38DDD.
This is so pretty. Available in sizes S to XL.
You’ll feel so luxe in this bra. Available in sizes 32C to 36C.
Wear this under your favorite blouse. Available in sizes S to L.

“A woman’s breast size can change several times during her lifetime. Do not get married to a size, go with what fits, and don’t get hung up on sizing,” she says.

Once you’ve added these to your cart, check out how to wash your lingerie to make sure those last as long as possible.

“Most of the time you might wear a 36C, but depending on how a style or brand is running, you may sometimes need a 36B or a 34D,” Fitzgerald says. She also mentions that different fabrics and your breast shape dictate how a bra will fit you.

Fitzgerald says, “28D, 30C, 32B, and 34A are sister sizes. These sizes have the same cup volume but have different band lengths. The band and cup work in ratios. For instance, 30B, 32B, 34B, 36B, and 38B all have the same cup-to-band ratio, but each is one cup size bigger than the other.”

Now shop for some gorgeous bras to add to your own lingerie collection.

The system-wide dark mode everyone wants on the iPhone is finally coming… to Macs

macOS dark mode

After revealing that iOS 12 will support the iPhone 5s earlier today, 9to5Mac has returned with another surprise. While poking around in the WebKit source code (which is the engine that power Safari), the site stumbled upon an intriguing piece of code that seems to imply that Apple will be adding a system-wide dark mode to Mac.

As 9to5Mac explains, new code implemented into WebKit in March indicates that Apple will introduce an official dark mode in macOS 10.14, which will be the next major release of the operating system after High Sierra. The code that 9to5Mac discovered “is designed to adapt WebKit’s rendering of a website based on the effective appearance of the application.” This could allow macOS to change the look of UI components across the system.

Fighting for gender equality on a daily basis is this woman’s job, and she wants you to “challenge everyday sexism” in your own life

Fighting for gender equality on a daily basis is this woman’s job, and she wants you to “challenge everyday sexism” in your own life

Fighting for gender equality on a daily basis is this woman’s job, and she wants you to “challenge everyday sexism” in your own life

We’ve made major strides for the advancement of women’s voices in predominantly male-dominated institutions, but there’s still a long road ahead in ensuring those same advancements for women are intersectional. After all, it’s 2018, and non-binary, LGBTQIA, Black, and Brown folks are still fighting tooth and nail for basic human rights. That’s why it’s imperative that we hold those in power accountable and demand they use their privilege and resources to speak up for those who can’t.

And many — if not all of those times — it’s women who step up to the plate.

That’s why we want to celebrate Sonia Ossorio, the President of the National Organization for Women, New York (NOW-NY) and New York City (NOW-NYC), who has devoted nearly 20 years of her life to fighting for women’s equality. With more than 5,000 active members and supporters of NOW-NY, Ossorio has led the organization to the front lines, fighting to change outdated laws, discriminatory policies, and oppressive attitudes in order to improve women’s reproductive rights, create economic equality, and put an end to any violence against women. NOW has been around since 1966 – its founding chapter is in Washington D.C. – and it’s the nation’s largest organization advocating for women’s rights.

Ossorio was appointed to the NYC Commission on Gender Equity by Mayor Bill De Blasio in 2016 and has continued to keep a subtle footing in the journalistic world with social and political commentary appearing in USA Today, the Denver Post, and the New York Times.

As of late, NOW-NY also works to pass stronger gun laws in the state of New York in an effort to end gun violence against women. Ossorio has also gone on to publish an important op-ed in the New York Daily News about how gun violence is in fact, a women’s issue. Further, NOW-NY also launched a campaign, Take Rape Seriously NOW, to assist survivors of sexual assault, provide resources for sexual assault and domestic violence victims, and expand the programs funded by the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). NOW-NY, with Ossorio leading the pack, is fighting for all women by any means necessary.

HelloGiggles spoke to Sonia Ossorio about how we can become active agents of change in the mobilization for women’s rights and equality, support women who have experienced any type of discrimination, and what makes her wake up, after 20 years at NOW-NY, in the morning.

HelloGiggles (HG): What does a day in the life of the president of NOW-NY look like?

Sonia Ossorio (SO): NOW is the largest women’s right organization in the country. It was started before most of the people reading this were born! We’ve always been on the front lines of social, political, and economic issues making sure that women have a voice and standing up for women’s rights — whether that is to advance our rights or make sure that people aren’t trying to roll back women’s rights. [That] is a constant two part battle that we undertake and that we’re involved in.

For my day to day, I come into the office with a list of things that I want to get done all while knowing that at any moment the ball could drop and it’s time to go into action and [get out there] and fight for an important issue, or it’s time to call our activists and say, “We need you today, 5 o’clock, at City Hall.” Because it’s important to be able to react quickly to injustices that are taking place and let those who wield a lot of power — whether it’s lawmakers or business people, know that we’re going to be loud and proud about where we stand on discrimination and injustices for women.

HG: You’ve been a part of NOW-NY for nearly 20 years and president for the last 12. How do you keep your momentum going? What is it about your career that makes you wake up in the morning, ready to go?

SO: I enjoy the people I work with and I get a real charge from rooting out injustice. At NOW, we are ready to take to the street with a moment’s notice. We keep the megaphone and banners by the door. Our team knows what’s at stake for women, people of color, and immigrants [during the] Trump administration.

The key thing about my job is I need to be on my toes every day to see where the opportunities exist to help women raise their voices, to be the support network to help them do just that, and to put pressure on those in power who think they’re going to get away with maligning women’s lives.

HG: You were a journalist – a business reporter, specifically – before you crossed over into the nonprofit sector. Can you speak more on why you decided to change career paths?

SO: It’s becoming more and more common to make career changes across industries. You become passionate about different things as you go through life. You grow more as a person as you apply the skills you’ve learned in different jobs to different situations. Allow room for flexibility in your life — don’t be set on having a “5-year plan” because sometimes you might miss opportunities for growth and change that come up along the way.

HG: As President, you’ve had your successes in being an active agent in helping pass history-making legislations. You’ve worked to pass anti-trafficking laws, repeal the statute of limitations on rape, and advocate for legislation criminalizing child marriages. How did you make that happen?

SO: There are so many areas where social justice doesn’t exist, so when I see injustices – I work to rectify it. It’s [also] about launching a campaign, that means [focusing on] public education, and getting citizens engaged to the point they are willing to get on a bus at 6 a.m. and spend the next 16 hours talking to legislators and telling the truth about women’s lives. And knowing that by doing it, you’re there for the single mom who has so many demands in her life, [knowing] you’re there for that woman who doesn’t have the time and resources or privilege to [stand up for herself].

HG: What advice would you give women hoping to someday do the work you’re doing — whether that be working for women’s rights, being a voice for the voiceless, or shattering the glass ceiling?

SO: There’s probably nothing more important for us to do as individuals than to challenge the everyday sexism that we see happening. To call it out when we see it, to ask others to do the same. To define for ourselves what being a good bystander look like. Have those meaningful conversations with the men in your lives – in your family, workplace, and community – about how they define manhood. Engage them in conversations about toxic masculinity and ask them to think about the harm they’ve seen it cause. Be direct, but kind. Just tell the men in your lives about what women would like to see from them and why being a feminist and a man is not at odds.

HG: What advice would you give readers or women who come across this interview and are dealing with any kind of discrimination or harassment?

SO: Well, in my life experience, I’ve come to realize that when you stand up for what’s right, more oftentimes than not, others will join you and you’ll be able to make change. Obviously, you don’t want to put yourself in dangerous situations, but everyday sexism, those everyday injustices that make your blood boil, it’d be healthier to say something about them. It’d be healthier to stand up to the racism and the bigotry.

HG: What are you looking forward to in 2018 with NOW-NY?

SO: Looking forward to getting more women elected to office. Looking forward to giving women a space where they can learn about important issues and learn how to be an activist.

Nipsey Hussle Wants to Bridge the Gap Between the Inner City and Silicon Valley

Visionary artist and multipreneur Nipsey Hussle has been building the foundation for his latest album Victory Lap over the last decade. By staying focused, watching trends, and strategically using his skills, he is set to disrupt the music and technology industries, one venture at a time.

Hussle’s Victory Lap comes on the heels of a partnership with his label All Money In and Atlantic Records, several mixtapes, and smart business moves. Last year, Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, helped open The Marathon Clothing with business partners including his brother Samiel Asghedom, Karen Civil, and Steve Carless. The store serves as a vehicle to sell his apparel as well as any music he puts out. The first ‘Smart Store’ of its kind, it offers customers an enhanced shopping experience and is located in the heart of the Crenshaw District, where Hussle grew up. He also invests in cryptocurrency, real estate, and recently opened Vector 90, a part co-working space and incubator, part STEM center for youth in his old neighborhood as well.

Black Enterprise Contributor Mia Hall sat down with Hussle to discuss his latest ventures and his plans to bridge the divide between low socioeconomic neighborhoods and  Silicon Valley.

How did the concept for your ‘Smart Store’ come about?

That was really an idea of a young prodigy, a young tech prodigy [Iddris Sandu]. He just had so many ideas and so much proficiency in the tech space that he was like, “Man, we can do this, we can do this, we can do this, we can do this.” And, when he showed me (it’s called augmented reality) the demonstration and what could be done with content and products and actual installations in the store, I’m like, ‘yeah, this is crazy.’

This is just taking the retail space to the next level and also, offering a different experience when you come here as opposed to buying it online. It’s not even fully activated just yet. Like, we’re going to be able to really do some next-level things once we start utilizing the technology with content. So, it’s just a theory right now. We got one piece of content that we engraved into the products, but it’s so much we’re going to do so that we really see the potential of it over time.

Credit: Timothy Smith

Nipsey Hussle and David Gross at the Grand Opening of Vector 90 in Los Angeles, California.

Can you tell us a little about how the co-working space and STEM center came about and what you want to do with it?

It’s called Vector 90 and then, the bottom STEM center part of it is called Too Big To Fail. Basically, it’s what you described it as; it’s a coworking space for inner-city entrepreneurs, and it’s also an incubator. So, basically, [there are] these different office spaces rented by entrepreneurs that are starting apps, or got skincare companies or product lines. So, they got investors in the building with David Gross, who’s the founder and my partner, and in myself.

And then so, every year we’re gonna be able to do a first round of seeding for one of the entrepreneurs. They can make a pitch and say, “This is what I’m doing. This is what we need to take it to the next level,” and they can have access to investments in the same building. Instead of having to fly somewhere. It’s right here in the Crenshaw district. I think that’s empowering and it’s an opportunity that entrepreneurs that are serious can reap the benefit from.

Britney Spears Has Emphasized to Dad She Wants Child Support Battle Settled

Her dad has her back. While Britney Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline continue to butt heads over child support payments for sons Sean, 12, and Jayden, 11, a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly that the 36-year-old’s father, Jamie, is now involved.

“Britney has emphasized to her father she wants this settled,” says the insider. “She doesn’t want it lingering because it only creates stress.”

Federline, 40, who has full custody of the boys, and his powerhouse celebrity divorce attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan met with Jamie March 9, endeavoring to “mutually” arrive at an increase since Britney’s fortune is growing. (She’s raked in more than $ 137 million during Las Vegas residency).

A post shared by Britney Spears (@britneyspears) on

“All Kevin wants to be able to do is provide the same standard of living the boys have when they with Britney,” the source continues. “Sean and Jayden’s needs are of course changing since they are getting older, which is a major factor in the decision to seek the increase.

As previously reported, Federline is requesting an increase to his monthly $ 20,000 in child support, now that Spears’ fortune has grown from 2007. When the original payment was ordered (after her highly publicized breakdown), Britney was making significantly less money. But now she’s “making 20 times more than she did,” notes the source, adding, “It’s Kevin’s right under family law to seek an increase based on that.” A source previously told Us that the singer is “angry” about the situation.

But despite the ongoing drama, things may be settled very soon: ”Both sides came away hopeful and optimistic that an agreement can be reached out of court,” the first source says.

Rugby-Inspired Aedelhard Wants Men to Join Its Team

The new men’s wear brand Aedelhard believes rugby teaches important values and lessons to its participants, and has aligned itself with the sport. That the game can be intensely competitive and at times violent is not lost on the brand.
“Beneath the seeming barbarism and occasional debauchery often associated with rugby lives a sport rooted in respect and a strict code of conduct,” Aedelhard declares on its web site. “It’s a game that instills teamwork and discipline.”
The sport has given the world one of the most enduring pieces of fashion — the rugby shirt. It’s that side of rugby that Aedelhard is tapping into, the “sport, intellect, sophistication and gentlemanly conduct — all derived from the game,” said Darrell Kopke, Aedelhard’s cofounder and chief executive officer.

“Dressing well is a form of good manners, and we’re simplifying the process with pieces that are easy to combine, accessibly priced, well-made and designed with intention,” added Michael Nguyen, cofounder and creative director.

Aedelhard wants to disrupt the technical apparel market with elevated, classically tailored and functional performance apparel. The company considers its pricing disruptive, with trousers retailing for $ 150, blazers, $ 380 and shirting, $ 120. “We’re bringing tailoring for the masses,” said Kopke.

The Galaxy S9 does come with Intelligent Scan, an unlock feature that can combine face and iris scans, but that’s still just a cool marketing name used for a feature whose only purpose is to quickly unlock the handset. But the system isn’t more secure than the Galaxy S8’s or Note 8’s.

Alexa is brushing up on her language skills.

Amazon’s voice-enabled digital assistant will reportedly soon become an on-the-go real-time language translator.

Alexa’s English, German, and Japanese skills will need to be rounded out when she becomes what Yahoo reports as a “multilingual assistant who can help in almost any situation.”

An Alexa “skill” already translates short sentences in English into 36 languages including Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Polish, Thai and many more — but just short phrases and words. Context and a more sophisticated take on culture will make the assistant useful in real-time moments, as Yahoo reported based on several unnamed sources close to the project. Read more…

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Wants You to Get Excited About Charlotte Black Businesses

If you know anything about the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), you know that it is the premier athletic conference for Historically Black College and University basketball fans and alumni. Every year thousands of people travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, to watch top teams go head to head for the CIAA championship title, attend engaging educational and career development programs, and fellowship during what some consider to be their homecoming. This year, the organization will be hosting the NEXT Level: CIAA Minority Business & Leadership Symposium in partnership with Black Enterprise, and Fifth Third Bank. The symposium will be held on Thursday, March 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Charlotte Convention Center.

As Black Enterprise joins forces with corporate and community organizations on the road to the Entrepreneurs Summit, it is imperative for us to create opportunities for people to build, connect, and elevate their brands and businesses along the way. We spoke with Jacqie McWilliams, commissioner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), about the unique partnership, how people can capitalize on the symposium, prepare for the Summit in June, and create opportunities to build and connect with others.

How did the CIAA Business Opportunity Summit come about?

This is our third year of doing this summit and this year it just kind of blew up! The first year that I was the commissioner of the conference, which was in 2012, we didn’t do anything with any of the businesses. Last year, we had panelists and some of our presidents there and the community was there and we had about 100-plus participants. I don’t know if I expected it to grow the way that it did! It just did and the stars aligned perfectly. We talked about doing educational sessions opposed to just having panel discussions. And, our relationship with the city, and bringing Black Enterprise here in June, and I came onto the steering committee and two of them are on our committee to put on CIAA, so it all just kind of fit.

How many people will be attending this year?

Our goal was 150 and I think we’re going to have about 200. We’re over capacity and our team is okay with that!

What impact does the CIAA hope to have with the Business Opportunity Summit?

I’d like to see the partnerships that come out of this. We are about the business of athletics, so this part is like the extra piece! We are a black-owned non-profit and we have the opportunity to get these businesses in front of our presidents, corporations, and our four major partners Toyota, Coca-Cola, Nationwide, and Food Lion.

My big thing is how do we engage our community and the minority business-owned community and make them feel like they’re a part because there’s not a lot of business that they can get directly with the CIAA but there’s an opportunity for them to network and opportunities that can build out of the CIAA if we engage them in that way.

What does this partnership with Black Enterprise mean to the CIAA and the city of Charlotte?

It’s huge! When you think about working with Black Enterprise and the City of Charlotte based on the growth that this community has had and the support that we have around black businesses we have in the community, BE is bringing the city together in a different type of way! We are seeing a very diverse group of small to large to city to non-profits coming together to help BE put on this event in June. And, I think that’s really meaningful because it’s a community and culturally that’s who we are as a community. So, I’m excited because we get Butch to be our keynote! That’s huge and I’m thankful that we get to have these powerful partnerships and representations so that people in our community will be able to see themselves potentially in him. Just like with me being the commissioner, women and other young girls get to see themselves potentially be a commissioner.

We are in roles of leadership and when you have folks that are doing well and exemplify what we want our community to look like that it’s important. For me, it has to be natural. I like this partnership because it is a natural fit for all of us.

How can attendees prepare for the event?

People should be prepared to know that they’re coming into a type-A, first-class event. And they should be prepared to present themselves as such. And if you want to be around some of the top professionals and network and build relationships. I would have my business cards and the information that I would want to share with other people as I network. Networking has always been tricky for me because it’s not about what you can get from someone but it’s about building authentic relationships.

What can entrepreneurs and small business owners look forward to at the symposium?

We’ll have breakout sessions. One is Assessing Capital to Jump-start Your Business, and then Understanding Your Value Proposition. From our The Women’s Business Center of Charlotte we have Natalie Williams who is the CEO moderating Assessing Capital to Jump-start Your Business and she’s phenomenal! Derek Dingle will be one of the moderators for Building Capacity: Joint Ventures, Associations, Mergers & Acquisitions Leadership That Yields Results

What do you want attendees to walk away with?

I love strategic partnerships and natural partnerships. When folks leave, I want them to be very passionate about the brand of CIAA and about what CIAA is doing in this community and all across our 12 schools. What we bring is these types of opportunities. We also do the career expo and once they leave this event they can go there and meet with a bunch of vendors who are giving jobs and internships. I want them to be able to see that outside of this there is that value to being involved with CIAA and beyond. We’re not just doing this for them. All of us have to win! We see ourselves as one big community.

Will there be follow-up events and programming to help entrepreneurs in the area after CIAA?

It’s not just the tournament. We’re very intentional about identifying key partners and members of our family that can help us execute year-round.

We have 14 championships a year for over 3,000 students. We do leadership training and educational programming. We are finding business and to help our students engage in leadership development, career development, and mental health development as student athletes. A lot of our sponsors want to get in front of athletes so this is our way that we do it. A lot of opportunities with facilitating and mentorship programming, we’re able to use small businesses to do that if our business allows.

What I have seen is that a lot of people are able to make connections and build partnerships and friendships during CIAA. And some of them have worked with us year-round whether they come and speak to our student athletes because they offer keynote services or keynote speaking, financial literacy or skill development and strategic planning… Those relationships have been built out of our conference. I’m seeing people being able to take advantage of the networking opportunity for their own businesses but also help CIAA promote what we do throughout the year.

What are you looking forward to most at the Entrepreneurs Summit in June?

I’m hoping that people will come to Charlotte and know that Charlotte is very progressive, energetic, and wants people to be successful. They’ll also see that the programming that we’re working on with BE is valuable information that they can use in Charlotte or whether they take it somewhere else. The other hope is that people will want to stay in Charlotte. We love our city! There is something about being here and how we come together to support events like BE‘s. I hope when people come here and leave they feel like they’ve had one of the best experiences with being in this city and got one of the best educational networking opportunities while in here Charlotte.

When I think about BE, and when I think about CIAA, it’s ours. We own that and so we get to create the platform that we want to create and BE gets to create the platform that they want to create to empower our own.

If you are interested in finding news ways to build and expand your business, join us in June for the Entrepreneurs Summit in Charlotte.

Report: Tiny Wants T.I. To Sign New Post-Nup

T.I. and Tiny are reportedly preparing for a vow renewal ceremony now that they have axed plans to call it quits. But Tiny wants her man to commit to a new “post-nup” agreement.

“There are a few things holding up T.I. & Tiny’s romantic vow renewal ceremony. Before Tiny walks down any aisle again or agrees to have more children with T.I., Tiny wants him to agree to a new post-nup agreement. Even though Tiny has been doing quite well for herself lately, she wants to secure her future,” a source told Hollywoodlife.com.

“Tiny wants an updated agreement, in writing, that T.I. will be more than generous with her and all of their present and possible future children. Tiny is still in love with T.I. but she is also a smart businesswoman who knows how to handle T.I.’s rocky behavior. She has been talking things over with her personal attorneys, drafting the perfect contract for their unique situation and Tiny plans on making T.I. sign it before they say any vows again,” the source added.

Tiny initially filed for divorce on December 7, 2016, stating that their “marriage is irretrievably broken with no hope of reconciliation.”

Soon after, it was reported that T.I. believed his wife “overreacted” by filing for divorce, claiming her “jealous friends” talked her into walking away from their marriage.

“Tiny is no Mother Theresa, but she dealt with T.I.’s crap for way too long. She stayed longer because of the five kids, but T.I. took her for granted and just thought she would always be there and she didn’t want to be stuck in that rut forever.”

“She wanted to be loved and not be seen as an afterthought and she is now doing something about it. It’s a wake-up call for all of them.”

Tiny and T.I. have three children together and four kids from previous relationships.

My 5-year-old wants to give away her little sister

by

Kelly Wilbanks

posted in Parenting

My 5-year-old has started asking me if we can give her sister to another family. I’m sure this is in the range of normal behavior…right? I remember thinking my life would be better without my little sister in it, too. A couple of years ago she was asking me if she could move to another family.

She’s seen her best friend’s family morph over the years with adoptions, fostering, and welcoming “bonus” children, so her concept of family is pretty fluid. I like that. But our family isn’t that fluid and her littler sister is here to stay.

girls-in-crib

I get it. Right now Vivi sees Evie as competition for my time. And she’s not wrong. If the little ones aren’t napping their needs make themselves known, sometimes at full throttle. And Vivi’s chorus of “look at me,” “look at what I made,” or “look at what I can do” gets drowned out.

I feel so torn. Spending time with my cool little kid is fun for me too. I want to invest in the special relationship I have with Vivianne, but get frustrated when she doesn’t acknowledge the time I do give to her. She’s only 5, I get that, but a little validation for the efforts I’m making would help me feel like my energy isn’t going into this vast empty space of want and need.

Some days aren’t so frustrating. Some days we can get away or both babies stay napping and we can sneak in a kitchen picnic like the one Vivi prepared the other day. She set out the cups, I poured the apple juice and she got out frozen Go-gurt, bananas, and apples to eat.

vivi-kitchen-tea-party

Last week she got off the bus in tears and immediately complained that her ear was hurting. She’d been in pain since lunchtime, but was afraid to go to the nurse. I called her doctors office and snagged the last appointment of the day and was advised to give her some ibuprofen for the pain.

She snuggled into me while we waited for the pain medication to work. As we snuggled, Evie woke up, hair asunder, and joined us on the recliner. Then Annie let out a mighty cry and everyone was shuffled as I went to pick her up.

The babysitter came and I took Vivi to her appointment. The clinic wasn’t far from her dad’s work and he came and joined us. The doctor spoke to Vivi about her ear and her cough. She said, “My cough sounds like a car not starting.” I looked at Tré, amazed at her metaphor.

She kept saying funny things like that. I wondered if I was missing these parts of her personality at home because I was so busy with the babies. At home she’s one voice straining against the others. Here, I was bearing witness to this clever, smart little human alone, really focusing on what she was saying. It was amazing! And no, I’m not just biased because I’m her mom. I swear.

Vivi-Kelly-sledding

Slipping in a 20-minute picnic is sometimes all the time I have to give. Some day she’ll be older and be the one not having time for me. I want to to stop what I’m doing when I can to give her all the attention I can. Like shutting off the TV when a conversation is taking place; I want her to know that our relationship is important.

As a family of five we will probably always worry about having enough time for each other. But someday the shoe will be on the other foot. I hope she remembers this when it’s her turn to stop what she’s doing and have a kitchen picnic with her children.

How do you fill up your older kids love tank?

Lucy Hale wants to go blonde

OHMYGOSSIP — Lucy Hale is thinking of going blonde after being inspired by Selena Gomez.
The 28-year-old actress loves mixing up her hair colour and style and she’s planning a “drastic” change to her locks when she sees her stylist next week.
She said: “I’m getting my hair done in like a week, and I don’t know what I’m going to do but it will probably be something drastic because I don’t have to film for a little bit.
“I could be coming out with a different colour. I have to do something different because I get so bored.
“I saw Selena [go blonde] and she looked so good. I was like ‘Yes!’ That was good inspiration. When it comes to beauty, I would try anything.”
The ‘Life Sentence’ actress finds good-quality basics can be very “sexy” but she’s having fun trying out new looks with her wardrobe and she particularly enjoys putting together unexpected combinations.
She told People: “I think there’s something so sexy about being comfortable wearing jeans and a T-shirt.
“I think what’s so cool about Coach right now is it’s very easy, everyday wear, but it’s funky.
“You would never expect to put a bomber with a skirt, and that’s partly my take on it too, but I think no one should ever take themselves too seriously. I’m at a point in my life with fashion where I’m just having fun with it and trying new things. There are no rules!”
Lucy previously admitted she is happy to experiment with her hair because she doesn’t feel “attached” to her locks.
She said: “I’ve tried so many different styles. I’m not really attached to my hair. I just constantly want something new — I’d get a different haircut with every outfit if I could! I’d even shave it off.”
And Lucy also enjoys trialling bold lipstick shades.
She said: “I have a bunch of sunglasses, but I’m really into the John Lennon, small-circle frames. When it comes to make-up, I love experimenting with a bold lip. A coral shade is perfect for summer.”

‘Altered Carbon’ Review: New Netflix Show REALLY Wants To Be ‘Blade Runner’

Altered Carbon streams on Netflix from February 2.

What is ‘Altered Carbon’?

Set in the distant future, Altered Carbon tells the tale of Takeshi Kovacs, a former freedom fighter awoken from supposed eternal hibernation by a rich aristocrat who wants him to solve a murder. But when he wakes up, Takeshi isn’t in his own body, while a whole bunch of people seem to be trying to kill him. And that’s just the start of his problems.

Ambitious Adaptation

“The first thing you will learn, is nothing is what it seems.” Altered Carbon begins with these words, suggesting that the audience should trust no one, X-Files style. Which isn’t surprising, as the plot device that drives the novel on which the series is based is designed to keep the reader — and now the viewer — on their toes.

For in this dystopian future, man has found a way to cheat death, downloading consciousness to a computer chip called a ‘stack,’ then depositing it in a discarded body, nicknamed a ‘sleeve.’ Which means that the rich can effectively live forever. That the person you are talking to might not be who they claim. And that when our hero Takeshi Kovacs wakes from his 250-year slumber, he’s no longer his Japanese self on the outside, but rather a big, muscly white dude, looking a lot like Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman.

Explaining this central conceit takes up a good chunk of the show’s excellent — if exposition-heavy — first episode, and that’s just the start of the world-building that Altered Carbon has to do. The series explores the way in which technology dominates — and suffocates — our lives in the future. It also examines how control of that technology has made the rich richer in grand palaces above the clouds, and the poor poorer; existing at street-level in a neon-nightmare of poverty and crime.

The visuals — which look like they cost a fortune — are both arresting and effective throughout, bringing this grim future world to life in chilling and all-too-believable fashion. But while Altered Carbon looks good, it also has a central mystery that needs solving.

Whodunnit?

Joel Kinnaman as Kovacs and James Purefoy as Bancroft.

Kovacs is stirred from his slumber by Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy — the best thing in Altered Carbon), who charges him with the task of solving a murder in exchange for his freedom. But there’s a twist. The murder that Bancroft wants Kovacs to solve is Bancroft’s. Seems the billionaire was shot in the head moments before a back-up of his consciousness could be made.

So while able to re-sleeve himself, Bancroft can’t remember what happened during the all-important hours before he died. Thickening the plot, only Bancroft and his wife had access to the weapon which killed him. Making them the prime suspects.

About half of Altered Carbon is concerned with Kovacs investigating this crime. And it’s by far the best material, turning the show into a neo-noir populated by femmes fatales, red herrings, and smoking guns.

Unfortunately, the series struggles when not dealing with the central mystery. Side-plots and digressions fill time but add little to proceedings, most notably a pointless episode that revolves around a brutal cage-fight. Flashbacks, dreams and visions are used to fill in blanks, but while lending the characters depth, they are much less interesting than the central whodunnit. Which all too often seems to be forgotten.

The Protagonist Problem

Kinnaman lacks charisma and charm.

Takeshi Kovacs is an intriguing protagonist. Being an ‘envoy’ he was formerly part of “the most formidable fighting force the galaxy had ever seen.” Possessing seemingly superhuman powers of intuition, envoys were able to drop into any sleeve on any planet and be combat-ready in minutes. Meaning they could infiltrate and manipulate their opponents, making Kovacs a formidable warrior, and potentially a cracking gumshoe.

His freedom-fighting got Kovacs arrested for treason, terrorism, espionage and crimes against the state. And the more we discover about that state, the more we understand his motives. So not only should he be a great detective, but also one we respect and maybe even like.

But onscreen, in his Joel Kinnaman sleeve, there isn’t a lot to like about Kovacs. And that’s largely down to Joel Kinnaman, who plays the character with a kind of detached resignation that makes it hard to root for him. That may well make sense for the character; the world-weary Kovacs tired of waking up in foreign bodies and dismayed by the world he now inhabits.

But the actor also lacks the requisite charm and charisma to bring Kovacs to life, his interactions with the crime-fighting force he assembles — including hard-nosed cop Ortega (Martha Higareda) and comical hotelier Poe (Chris Conner) — feeling awkward and forced.

Indeed, when we meet him in flashback scenes — and the character is played by Will Yun Lee — there’s something heroic about Takeshi. But there are times when future Kovacs seems barely awake. Even when he’s carrying out heroic deeds. All of which transforms the show’s courageous central character — and our guide through this complicated world — into something of a bore.

Influences All Over the Place

Altered Carbon looks amazing.

Altered Carbon is a show that wears its influences on its sleeve. Everywhere you look there are nods to sci-fi classics, both visually, and in terms of the storyline. There are obvious comparisons to both the Ghost in the Shell anime and recent movie. Not just because of the parallels in terms of human augmentation. But also because of the white-washing controversy that engulfed the Scarlett Johansson film. Though in Altered Carbon the white transplant was part of the source material and does make narrative sense.

The Matrix is also an obvious influence, with multiple Altered Carbon scenes taking place in virtual reality, where characters can download knowledge and training much like those hooked up to the matrix. The TV version of Westworld also casts a shadow over proceedings, though largely in the series’ second half, the details of which we won’t spoil here.

But the sci-fi that Altered Carbon most resembles is Ridley Scott’s movie masterpiece Blade Runner. Both are rain-swept noirs that revolve around reluctant detectives. Kovacs has a similar demeanour to Deckard, and even supplies monotone narration akin to the voiceover that appeared on the original Blade Runner cut.

Story beats are similar, though, in spite of the fact that it’s told over 10 hours, Altered Carbon lacks Blade Runner‘s depth, the film questioning what it means to be human; the show touching on themes of identity and individuality — and introducing thought-provoking religious objections concerning re-sleeving — then all too quickly forgetting about them.

Visually, there are also times when they look very nearly identical. Which is no bad thing, as the effects in Blade Runner still look incredible. But these similarities also serve as a continual reminder of what can be achieved with a better script, director and actors.

Is Altered Carbon Good?

The show frequently lacks focus.

Altered Carbon is good. But only when building its rich world, and dealing with the investigation of Laurens Bancroft’s death. Then it’s pretty great, journeying to some sick, twisted, and wholly unexpected places.

But frequently the show feels overstuffed, introducing too many storylines that detract from that central mystery, ricocheting back-and-forth in time in sometimes confusing fashion, and setting off on tangents that frequently don’t pay-off. It also doesn’t help that — onscreen at least — Takeshi Kovacs is far from a compelling character. Making it hard to care about his plight as proceedings progress.

All of which results in a show that kicks off in encouraging fashion, but ultimately outstays its welcome thanks to that lack of focus and momentum, too much filler, and Joel Kinnaman’s underwhelming central performance.

Delta Changes Pet Policy, Wants to Know If Your Dog Can Behave Before It Can Fly

Looks like 2017 was a poor year for pet manners.

According to The Associated Press, the number of pet complaints Delta Airlines received in 2017 was double the number from 2016. Passenger complaints included reports of animals peeing, pooping and biting during Delta flights.

In response to the uptick in pet problems, Delta Airlines has changed its pet policy. For the safety of all aboard, the airline says it will start asking passengers flying with animals to provide more information on their pets, including a signed voucher that furry friends can behave in the friendly skies.

As of March 1, passengers flying with an animal will have to provide proof of their animal’s vaccinations or health records at least 48 hours before their scheduled flight. Additionally, travelers flying Delta with emotional support animals will need to sign a voucher before boarding the plane that states their pets can and will behave on the flight.

Can’t get enough of cats, dogs and other furry friends? Click here to get the cutest pet news and photos delivered directly to your inbox.

As of right now, Delta isn’t asking for any records to back up this voucher — such as obedience school forms or trainer appraisals — just the owner’s word.

Corey Feldman Wants Terry Crews to Help Stop Sexual Assault in Hollywood

Corey Feldman is still continuing on his quest to expose Hollywood’s dark underbelly, most notably in relation to allegations of pedophilia and child abuse, spurred on by the sexual assault he allegedly experienced as a child actor. Now, he’s looking for allies who may help to further his message.

More: Another Famous Child Star Has Corey Feldman’s Back

In an interview with E! News, Feldman said he’d be open to working with others who have opened up about being sexually harassed and assaulted while working in Hollywood, but he particularly wants to partner with Terry Crews. Crews revealed in October that he was once groped by an unnamed Hollywood executive.

“I thought about [reaching out to Terry], but I’ve been pretty overwhelmed with everything that I’m doing, but here’s an open invitation,” Feldman said. “Terry, if you’re listening, I’m more than happy to join forces with you and work together. I’m willing to work with anybody. Can I just put that out there?”

He added, “I’m willing to work with anybody that wants to aid in this fight. If you want to help me get this film made, to tell the truth, please help me… If you want to help me get the statutes changed, please help me. If you want to help me get your story out, I will help you. I’m willing to do whatever it takes. I’m here to be a soldier. I’m not in it for me. I’m in it for all of us. Let’s work together, please.”

More: Corey Feldman Claims His Arrest Was Connected to Sexual Abuse Allegations

Feldman launched a plan last year to raise $ 10 million to make a movie exposing organized, systemic sexual abuse of child actors in Hollywood. He says the movie is not a documentary, but is based on his own experiences as a child star, as well as those of his late friend Corey Haim, who died in 2010. He has publicly accused former actor Jon Grissom of molesting him as a child. Grissom has not publicly acknowledged the accusations.

Laura Govan Wants You to Know She Doesn’t Know Vince Herbert ‘Like That’ [Video]

Laura Govan wants to clear her name.

After a few brief press visits, the paparazzi caught up with Laura (or she caught up with them) at LAX and she had ‘no comment’ — but with a lot of comments.

via TMZ:

First things first … Laura wanted to make it clear she is NOT pregnant. When we got her at LAX Thursday she admitted she does know Tamar’s estranged husband, but clarified she doesn’t know him “that way.”

Remember, Tamar claimed Vincent had gotten some “stupid broke ass whore” pregnant. Then Laura’s ex-husband, Gilbert Arenas, jumped into the mix and strongly insinuated Laura was said whore.

Laura told us she has respect for Tamar and Vince, and has nothing to do with their beef. But when it comes to her own ex, Laura’s clearly pissed off at Gilbert. In fact, it sounds like there’s a legal war coming with the former NBA star.

Watch below.

CNN’s Brooke Baldwin Wants to Tell the Story of the American Woman

CNN’s Brooke Baldwin wants 2018 to be the “Year of the Woman.” And in a new digital series for the network, she does her part in making that possible by telling the stories of eight game-changing women who have shattered glass ceilings and stereotypes. In interviews with iconic figures ranging from Ava DuVernay to Betty White, Baldwin seeks to uncover the answer to an impossible question: What makes someone an American woman?

The CNN Newsroom anchor chatted with Ms. by phone from her office in New York about the new project and what she hopes it can add to conversations swirling around women’s rights—and what she hopes comes next.

The series is primarily web-based. It’s so shareable and so accessible. Are you hoping this is going to help bring these strands of women’s history out and add to the growing conversation?

I don’t necessarily have a goal with this series, I just want to have a natural conversation with women. I chose eight phenomenal recognizable women for this first series [Diane von Furstenberg, Ava DuVernay, Ashley Graham, Issa Rae, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Reese, Betty White and Pat Benatar] and I want to broaden this out eventually to everyday, extraordinary women. You know, I want my sister’s in law’s best girlfriend to send a video, I want women I’ve never heard from to send videos. I even sat as a viewer with my mom a couple weeks ago; we sat and watched and she just kept saying, “let’s watch another one, let’s watch another one.” And I’m so hoping that’s how people take it in. We’re such a binge watch culture, myself included and guilty. The segments are very digestible, they’re six, seven, eight-minute pieces [and] then I want to hear from women. I have no idea what women will say, I’m purposely keeping it open-ended.

This series had a profound effect on me, shooting in 2017. When you watch these women, and I purposely picked women who shattered their own glass ceilings, but my prerequisite was “Who are you reaching back to and helping?” I want women whose names you and I may not recognize to watch these and think, “Oh wow. Ava DuVernay had a hard time becoming a director when no one really knew her name, and look what she’s done now. Or, Diane von Furstenberg is this sexy, smart maven of a fashion designer whose dress is iconic, but went through some real struggles. I just hope they’re relatable and inspirational for everyone.

Baldwin with fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg

You don’t shy away from the personal in this series. During the segment with Sheryl Crow, you talk about how hers were some of the first songs you learned when you started playing guitar, and that’s one of several moments where you let viewers into how these women have played parts in your personal story.  Were the women in the series specifically people you said,I want to create this and I want them to be part of it?”

I very intentionally selected these eight women because I am a genuine fan [of theirs]…I’m also going to credit my producers, Cullen Daly, and our digital lab team for connecting the dots. They would be like “Wait, why are you picking Pat Benatar?  …And I’d say “I totally remember rocking out to Pat on the radio years ago as a little girl.” As a journalist, it doesn’t come naturally for me to use “I”, but it was their idea to make it personal and I hope it works for people watching.

Does putting a more personal side of yourself into this project feel different to you, as someone’s whose job it is to be personally removed from the stories you report?

It totally does. It’s funny, I sit on the air every day for two hours and I hope to present myself as authentic, but it’s a different thing when I’m opening myself up in these pieces, just as a woman. Showing folks me and my awkward self with my first acoustic guitar at age sixteen, with my learner’s permit in my mouth—it’s very personal! There’s a picture of me as a young anchor in West Virginia… Nearly all of my producers are female, it was their idea to do that. I’m curious to hear how people react to it. In order for me to show America and the world a genuine series of inspiration, I think I just need to be real with women. I didn’t want to fully have my reporter hat on and interview these women, and I think, I hope, it makes the series more poignant.

Baldwin with singer Sheryl Crow

What was the development process like getting this from an idea to launch day?

I was sitting on my bed in New York City on a weekend in December. I was sort of taking a minute after the whirlwind of covering the 2016 election, which was an extraordinary year. I remember sitting there on my laptop [and] my best girlfriend had posted about a New Yorker article on Facebook that referenced this [Women’s March] happening in Washington, D.C. in January. Thinking back, people were saying “Well, is it just going to be a couple of hundred women? Maybe a thousand?” And something clicked in that moment.

I’d covered the election and I’d listened to all these female voices and I think it was a lot of young women who had never been as fully engaged in politics before. Some of them were hoping for history to be made and for the first female president. Some were at Bernie Sanders rallies because they [thought], “No big deal, this is going to happen in my lifetime, we’re going to see a woman president.” I had all these feelings and thoughts and data points swirling and [the Women’s March] was really the beginning of my “aha!” moment. I initially presented it as something we would do strictly on television. Then, I realized there’s so much more space digitally—and I’d never done digital before, so this is totally new to me.

[The CNN digital team] knew I was keen to do something online and then all of a sudden Cullen Daly, who is this SEAL Team Six of digital magic [became attached to the project] and we just had this meeting of minds. I’d look around some of these shoots; we had women behind the camera on some shoots, we had a female editor, we had female producers. Unintentional, but we were all on the same page, and we just all had this same belief that something special was happening with women. We shot it in my “free time” and the idea was to shoot the segments in significant locations where these women felt their gender. Like, Pat Benatar, we took to Madison Square Garden because she remembers being told women wouldn’t sell out an arena. Or Issa Rae took us to Harlem, where her [apartment] was broken into and that’s what led to her needling in her journal and putting the two words  “awkward” and “black” together and begat her incredible series on YouTube. Of course, I had no idea that #MeToo was going to happen, but it just all came together in a special moment for women.

What is your hope—for the future of this project and for this moment?

I want to instill belief and encouragement in every single woman and girl who watches this series, [for them] to think about the struggles that these incredibly successful women had and think, “OK, these women had X, Y and Z difficulties in their life, health, career and managed to succeed. Not to mention, Pat and Sheryl [talking about their experiences with sexual harassment]. I want everyday women to walk away from this series saying, “I want to kick some ass.”

On a personal level, these women have seeped into my unconscious in a way where I’ll have moments where, if I have a difficulty in my own life, I will actually think, “Well, what would Ava do?” These women have inspired me. I have always had a voice and I’m incredibly fortunate to have a platform where I can speak up and speak out. But I think these women have given me a little more confidence, a little more edge, to use my voice a little more loudly. I have a special feeling that something extraordinary is going to happen with women in the national conversation.

Baldwin and fashion designer Tracy Reese

How would you complete the series’ signature question: “I am an American Woman because…”

I’m Brooke Baldwin and I’m an American Woman because I believe in encouraging other women, pushing myself outside my comfort zone and becoming the best version of myself I can be.

American Woman is available in its entirety on CNN’s digital platform and CNNgo apps. Segments will be featured every Wednesday from January 3 to February 28 during the 2 p.m. edition of CNN Newsroom.

Russia Wants Answers Over Chechen Leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s Blocked Instagram

A Russian internet watchdog is demanding answers after Chechnya’s authoritarian leader Ramzan Kadyrov was apparently denied access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts. Kadyrov, who has been accused by numerous human-rights groups of assembling “concentration camps” of Russian LGBT people (and executing many of them), is accusing the U.S. government of pressuring the social-media giants to disable the accounts, which he claims were blocked over the weekend without any explanation. Watchdog Roskomnadzor said it intended to make an official request to the companies for more information. Kadyrov, who has more than 3 million followers on his Russian-language Instagram account, was hit last week with travel and financial sanctions from the U.S. over alleged human-rights abuses as part of Magnitsky Act rules. Kadyrov is steadfastly loyal to Russian President Vladimir Putin and has used his accounts to threaten critics of the Kremlin.

Cristiano Ronaldo Says He Wants 7 Children After Welcoming No. 4 Last Month

Not a month has passed since the birth of his fourth child and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo already wants more.

Just weeks before winning the annual Ballon d’Or award on Dec. 7, an accolade given to the best-performing soccer player from around the world, Ronaldo admitted his desire to grow his trophy collection and his family. “I want to have seven children and as many Ballons d’Or,” the Portuguese athlete told French newspaper L’Equipe. And the star athlete is not far off on either goal.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who plays for Real Madrid C.F., has had an extraordinary year on and off the field. On Nov. 12, he welcomed a baby girl named Alana Martina with girlfriend Georgina Rodríguez, and in June, his 5-month-old twins Eva Maria and Mateo arrived via surrogate. With 7-year-old Cristiano Jr. from a former relationship in the mix, he’s got three more little ones to go before he reaches his goal of seven.

An expanding family would be no problem for the couple, who have been open about their strong bond and their love of children. “With Cristiano, I have found love. We complement each other very well,” Rodríguez told Hola! Magazine. “We have a beautiful relationship. When I have him next to me, I have everything,” she told the Spanish-language magazine, adding: “The children are our happiness — we wake up and the first thing we do is hug and kiss them.”

In recent weeks, Ronaldo and Rodríguez have frequently shared love for their tykes on social media. Last month, the new mom posted a sweet photo of herself cradling and gazing at the latest addition to the brood, and Ronaldo has been rocking a fashion campaign for CR7 Denim on Instagram with his eldest son and namesake.

Tiffany Haddish Wants to Know if NeNe Leakes Is ‘Crazy’ For Real, Accuses Her of Being Drunk During Her Comedy Show: ‘I Got Concerned’ [Video]

Tiffany Haddish stopped by Bravo’s ‘Watch What Happens Live’ alongside Cynthia Bailey and had a question about Cynthia’s ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ co-star, NeNe Leakes.

When a caller asked Cynthia how she felt about NeNe’s shade towards her friendship with Kenya, Cynthia laughed it off as no big deal. Tiffany then asked Cynthia if NeNe is ‘crazy for real?’

“Is she crazy for real? You know I did a comedy show with her,” said Tiffany.”That was a mess.”

Andy asked for clarity:

“Did you think she was funny?”

To which Tiffany replied:

“She was funny at first, but then she got drunk. And then it got —  I got concerned.”

Just as she was about to spill the tea, Andy cut to commercial break. We don’t know what show Tiffany was talking about, but the streets think it may have been the show where NeNe made those distasteful rape comments.

US Wants ‘Pharma Bro’ Shkreli To Forfeit $2M Wu-Tang Album

NEW YORK (AP) — The government wants to seize Martin Shkreli’s one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album.

The recording that Shkreli has boasted he bought for $ 2 million is on a list of assets that prosecutors argue the jailed former pharmaceutical CEO should forfeit after his conviction earlier this year in a securities fraud scheme involving two failed hedge funds.

In a letter filed this week in Brooklyn federal court, prosecutors told a judge that Shkreli is on the hook for $ 7.3 million.
The 34-year-old “should be held financially responsible and forfeit this amount as it was obtained by him as a result of the fraud,” the letter says.

Along with the Wu-Tang Clan “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” album, prosecutors say Shkreli should give up $ 5 million in cash in a brokerage account, his interest in a pharmaceutical company and other valuables including a Picasso painting and another unreleased recording that he claims he owns, “Tha Carter V” by Lil Wayne.

Defense attorney Ben Brafman said on Friday that Shkreli would fight the forfeiture.

“Our position is clear: None of the investors lost any money and Martin did not personally benefit from any of the counts of conviction,” Brafman said in a statement. “Accordingly, forfeiture of any assets is not an appropriate remedy.”

The boyish Shkreli is best known for jacking up the price of a life-saving drug and for his snide online “Pharma Bro” persona.

A judge revoked Shkreli’s $ 5 million bail and threw him behind bars in September after he offered a $ 5,000 bounty on Facebook for a strand of Hillary Clinton’s hair. He’s due back in court for sentencing early next year, when the forfeiture demand will be decided.

Tiffany Haddish Reveals She Wants To Care For Her Mentally Ill Mom, Despite Years Of Abuse

2017 is definitely Tiffany Haddish‘s year.

Not only was she the breakout star in the summer hit Girls Trip, she made history this fall on Saturday Night Live and dropped her first cable stand-up show on Showtime. While she is prepping for a slew of new movies to come out next year, she is also planning to drop her memoir, The Last Black Unicorn.

As to be expected, in her upcoming book, she is keeping it 100.

According to PEOPLE, who received an exclusive first look, it’s pretty clear that the 37-year-old star has come a long way, admitting that she was abused by her mother who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“I was told every day I’d never be nothing,” she says. “Now I look in the mirror and say, ‘Tiffany Haddish, I love and approve of you.’ It was all worth it.”

Haddish also writes that the abuse worsened after her mother was involved in a car accident that caused her brain damage.

“After the accident, oh my God, she would say the worst things to me, like ‘You look like your ugly ass daddy, I hate him. I hate you.’”

“She couldn’t get all her words out, so she’d just punch me. Just full on. Because of her I can take a punch like nobody’s business. Teachers would ask, ‘Why’s Tiffany’s lip busted?’ I didn’t say anything. As bad as she was to me, I still couldn’t help but love her.”

Instagram Photo

“My mom is still alive, in a mental institution,” she explains in the book.

However, Haddish is clear: She still loves her mother and wants to take care of her.

“My goal is to get enough money to buy a duplex. I want to put her in one of the units and hire a full-time nurse to take care of her. Then I want to get her whatever medications she needs so she can be my mama again. Honestly, that’s all I really want in life.”

The comedienne also opens up about her abusive ex-husband, who she married and divorced twice.

“The relationship got violent. Once at a comedy festival, Tom Green comes over and he is making me laugh so hard. My ex-husband grabbed me. He was like ‘It’s time to go now.’ I had a knot on the side of my head from where he slammed me into the wall and marks on my throat where he’d dug in his nails. When I got onstage, everyone could tell I had been beaten. All those people wanted to help, but all I could do was push them away, and then go back to the dude that was abusing me. Why? Maybe I didn’t know any other way to be loved.”

This is deep. We can’t wait to get our hands on this book!

The Last Black Unicorn hits bookstores on December 5.

She lives as Twitter’s high ranking elder, wise enough to push necessary dialogue but trill enough to put you in your place.

Since the release of 2015’s But You Caint Use My Phone, the soul singer has been keeping busy. Finishing up her Badu Vs. Everything tour just last month, she also curated the fourth installment in a series of Fela Kuti box sets and hosted BET’s Soul Train Awards for the third year in a row. This year’s show found the legendary MC at the forefront of controversial topics, speaking her truth about “fake news” while also showing love to all the artist that hit the stage —new and old. In honor of her latest endeavor, EBONY chatted with Mz. Cerebellum about keeping peace during the chaos, the true definition of “mumble rap” and manifesting your purpose.

EBONY: As the host of the Soul Train Awards for the third year in a row, we can always expect you to drop a few of your “izms.” This year you lead with commentary surrounding our current political climate, the negative shift in energy we’re experiencing and remaining spiritually in tune through it all. It seems as if spiritual wellness has always been apart of your life. I read that when you were attending Grambling State you taught yoga and meditation to the youth?

Erykah Badu: I studied all forms of art in school. When I went to college at Grambling, I became a theater major there. And I had little odd jobs in the summertime. It was during my school breaks when I would teach the kids yoga at the Community Center.

Did you teach meditation as well?
I was supposed to be teaching meditation. I wasn’t trained to teach it but I just felt like it was very necessary because I grew up in that community and wanted to give those children something that they didn’t have. It was at the Martin Luther King recreation center. When I grew up there, I was able to travel all over the world and I never left the gymnasium because they would bring so many special projects and programs. Different people that I’ve never even heard of—which encouraged me to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be! And that’s what I wanted to do for kids.

It’s pretty incredible that you were so self-aware as a student and provided that service to those younger than you. There is so much strife and distress in the world now. How do you still keep your peace and maintain high vibrations?
I learned it over time. I didn’t start out doing it. I mimicked it. You got to fake it till you make it! I was just doing things that seemed spiritual because I really felt a need for it. I really wanted to vibrate at a higher place. Over time, I’ve just learned to eliminate things. We learn so many things and there so many opinions of how you execute because there are so many roads to get to wherever you want to get. I learned to eliminate all of that and unlearned all of that.

We subconsciously consume so much information that affects our moods and views. So I definitely understand removing certain toxic things.
Yes. I just started from the basics of listening for the stillness underneath every single thing — even when it’s noisy, hectic or chaotic. I tried to listen for the stillness under every single thing. Not metaphorically. Literally. Listen for the stillness. It’s a vibration and it’s humming underneath everything around us. And it mimics what we describe as love. That’s what I feel when I actually connect to it. Once I connect with the stillness under everything, I can connect with every single human being, no matter color, beliefs, religion. Each is connected. That’s what I know now. I didn’t start out knowing that. I had to go through the whole process of figuring it out. And along the way eliminating things has gotten me here. But the journey still continues even where I am now! Thank you for letting me share that with you.

No, thank you for sharing! I was most looking forward to hearing you drop these gems. That’s one of the reasons you resonate so well with my generation. There’s this duality to you. You promote peace and positivity but make no mistake—you take no shit. And you’re also really big on embracing your sexuality. Who inspired you to be comfortable with yourself?
You do. When I talk to you and talk to younger people who are so effectively generating what it is that you want to create and manifest it right before my eyes. You inspire me. It’s the honesty that you have. The realness that you have. The ability that you have to become whatever you want. The main thing about this generation is the frequency keeps rising higher and higher. I mean, unfortunately, the top story is all this negative shit but what’s really happening is that the frequency is raising. The vibrations are raising. People mistake my son, who’s 19 and his generation for mumble rapping. But they are an example of what we are becoming as a society because their vibration is so high that they don’t even need words anymore! It’s all about the frequency of that music.

Can’t say I’ve thought about it that way before.
When I go to an Uzi Vert concert or an XXX concert or an UglyGod concert..I’m looking around and everyone is speaking the same language. Who am I tell my son and his generation at 19 that his truth is not relevant? They are generating what they need. This low-frequency shit is boring to them. Media? Low frequency. News? Low frequency. Shows? Low frequency. And low frequency has nothing to do with drugs. That’s coping mechanism for mental illness. Low frequency keeps you low but they ain’t falling for it. Do you want to know the coldest thing about this generation? They know what they are doing and they ain’t got to explain it to you. Because it’s unexplainable! They don’t have time for it. And you’re not going to listen anyway. That’s their attitude you know? So, I got to believe in them.

You were never limited in that way either. And maybe it’s because you never allowed it. You went to a few labels before you found one that believed in you and understood your vision. You embrace the youth and their freedom to create, from showing love to 6LACK’s  “On & On” cover to the “For the D” challenge. Do you have any other new artists that you pull from?
I like this group Canadian group called the badbadnotgood.

I’ve never listened to their music but I’ve heard of them.
Listen to them. They are a coldblooded group. But I listen to a whole lot of stuff. I mean were in the age of information and as a DJ it’s important to keep my finger on the pulse of the music.

When you listen to these sounds, I’m sure it inspires and helps in your own personal projects.
They do. I’m not just a musician or a singer. I’m getting in so many different things. I’m also a filmmaker and I’ve recently been editing these little mini-movies all day long. That’s what I’m doing right now — visuals and frequencies more than words. Words are not coming to me right now for some reason. Just feelings and I’m able to express these feelings through visuals.

You’ve always been dynamic in your artistry, from the very beginning. The people of Brooklyn connected with that authenticity too. I read at the beginning of your career before Baduizm debuted, you would perform in the city. Any other memories you connect with from back then?
It was just the newness and freedom. The feeling of conquering the world. The feeling that I was immortal, you know? I started my career at 27 and we’re so young at that age. But we’re also so old at the same time. It seems like you never age and you kind of stay in the same place and mindset because our minds were so open and intelligent. You’re not exactly a child and you’re not exactly embracing adulthood. It’s a beautiful place to be. And I remember it being one of my favorite times in my life. I don’t know how you guys feel now. And I can only emphasize with you because of the frequency of shit that’s happening right now.

Tell me about it!
It just seems so competitive right now. You’ve got social media and a hundred people doing what you want to do or think that they can do what you can do because they can make it look like they do what you do. It’s different now. I recorded Baduizm on a cassette tape. There was no internet. Baduizm was one of the first CDs I ever saw. So it was a different time. But I can imagine the illusion that you guys are under. The illusion that it’s not so good. But what’s actually happening is, the vibrations are rising! And the people that know, know. And I just want to remind you.

Any advice you can give to the youth on manifesting their dreams?
Write it down. Write down everything. And go back through it. Underline it. Circle it. Underline the nouns once and the verbs twice. Write it down and watch it happen.

The 2017 Soul Train Awards will air on BET and BET Her on Sunday, November 26 at 8:00pm E.T.

‘Great Disrespect!’ Donald Trump Wants the NFL to Suspend Marshawn Lynch if He Sits During the Anthem Again

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Oakland Raiders’ Marshawn Lynch should be suspended by the NFL for the rest of the season if he “sits down to boos” during the national anthem again.

Trump showed no sign of letting go of his attack of NFL players taking a knee after Lynch sat down during the Star-Spangled Banner but then stood for the Mexican national anthem, before a game against the New England Patriots in Mexico City on Sunday. On Monday, the President tweeted that running back’s actions amounted to “great disrespect” and that the “NFL should suspend him for remainder of season. Attendance and ratings way down.”

According to Associated Press, Lynch has not stood for the national anthem since his return from retirement this season.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick first kneeled in 2016 in protest against shootings of black men by white police officers. Some American football players have continued the protest in defiance of Trump, who has been vocal of his opposition to the action.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus ‘Wants to Keep Working’ Amid Cancer Battle

Amid Julia Louis-Dreyfus cancer battle, the Veep star is determined to keep working.

“Julia is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and we’re obviously postponing production of the show – we were supposed to have started now – while she’s in treatment. But the expectation is that we will shoot again,” executive producer Frank Rich said on SiriusXM’s “Press Pool” on Wednesday, November 15. “We have one more season we’re doing, which we’re incredibly excited about. Rather impressively, while we wait for her to gather her full strength, around her treatment we’ve been having with the cast in Los Angeles, table reads of scripts for the final season as they’re ready.”

“So it’s been quite something because she’s fighting a serious, what is for anybody, a real illness. And yet, wants to keep working as much as circumstances allow without being crazy about it,” Rich continued. “I’ve seen her as recently as ten days ago, and watched her just be hilarious playing Selina Meyer. With the cast all around her playing the assorted group of idiots that Selena has to deal with on a weekly basis on the show. So she’s got a great support system. She’s a very strong person and we can’t wait to welcome her back at full speed.”

The actress shared an update on her health on Thursday, November 9, and revealed she had completed her third round of chemotherapy. “2 of my darling Bozos (love them so much) psyche me up for 3rd chemo today,” she wrote alongside a video of her costars Sam Richardson and Matt Walsh made to inspire her during her treatment. “And guess what? It worked! I’m psyched AF.”

The 56-year-old first announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer on Twitter. “1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one,” she wrote on September 28. “The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

[OPINION]: This Male Millennial Wants You To Know: Women Harass Men, Too

Women—and even some men—are going public, almost daily, accusing men of sexual misconduct within the workplace. Rarely do we hear stories of men being sexually harassed by women at work, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

In the midst of several disturbing allegations of sexual misconduct coming out in the news recently, I am reminded of my own experience and the times when I felt comments or behavior from a female co-worker at my former place of employment were not OK.

Workplace Double Standards?

Double standards in the workplace are extremely taboo and rarely discussed. Comments made in the same context between a man and woman can be taken differently.

I recall one time at my former job when a female co-worker asked me to assist her with one of the new programs the company used. I stopped by her desk to help her with the issue and when I leaned in to use her keyboard, she told me, “You smell really good.”

Honestly, maybe she just liked the cologne I was wearing but if I said the same in the same situation would it be appropriate? Can I tell a woman, “You smell good,” while we are working? If she reported that comment to human resources, would HR brush it off or would I find myself in trouble?

Crossing the Line

Another situation with the same co-worker happened when I wore a new pair of slim-fitting khakis to work. I was in the cafeteria getting coffee as she was sat with a group of other women from her department. She said “New pants? They look good on you.”

The entire table snickered. I remember at that exact moment I felt as though I were on display. I felt cheapened.

Again, let’s flip the situation. If I said to her, “That dress looks good on you,” how would she have taken the comment?

The last and final straw happened a few weeks later when this co-worker touched my arm and asked, “Have you been working out?”

Why was she touching me at all?

The first two situations mentioned—one can argue whether they were inappropriate or not—but not this. I knew if I had been the one to touch her body I would be unemployed.

There is an old saying that what you allow is what will continue. I did not want to get this woman fired or make a whole fiasco about it so I wrote her a direct email. I listed the three times she made me feel uncomfortable and asked her to please keep our relationship professional. She later apologized to me and only talked to me about work the rest of the time I was at that company.

Having been subject to harassment and now witnessing the barrage of sexual harassment stories dominating the news forces me to take accountability from another angle. That is that often men are more receptive to these comments, especially if it is coming from someone they find attractive. Nine times out of 10 we deem it as harmless flirting. But the point is that no matter your gender, there is a very thin line between being friendly/having an innocent conversation, and making your co-worker feel harassed or uncomfortable.

Chrissy Teigen wants lots of kids

OHMYGOSSIP — Chrissy Teigen wants to be “pregnant for the rest of her life”.
The Sports Illustrated model – who has 18-month-old daughter Luna with her husband John Legend – can’t wait to have another child and is keen to “knock ’em out” for as long as she can.
She said: “I feel good, I feel good, we’re still trying … I’m going for I mean hopefully in the next few years because for me I really want to just knock ’em out. That’s my dream, I want to just be pregnant kind of for the rest of my life. Not for the rest of my life, but the rest of my fertile life. So we’ll see.”
And John has revealed the pair are “working on” adding to their family.
He added to E! News: “We want more, we’ll hopefully have another one in the near future. We’re working on it.”
It comes after Chrissy admitted she “cannot wait” to have a bigger family and loves being a mother to Luna.
She shared: “I probably think about it more than anybody. I cannot wait to have the biggest family. Everybody is curious. They’re like, ‘When are you going to do it? When are you going to do it? When’s the process going to start?’
“It’s so fun absorbing baby Luna right now. I think I’m enjoying my time absorbing and seeing everything – all her new little steps and new moments – and being there for them …
“Every day it’s something new with her. More than anything, I love seeing her little palette. She will eat anything and everything. I just think it’s so fascinating. You give her the whisk and she knows exactly what to do the second you teach her. It’s really cute.”

This company wants to stop food allergies before they start. Can they do it?

TwitterFacebook

Ashley Dombkowski talks about her job with a kind of reverence we’d all like to have.

The co-founder of Before Brands, a San Francisco-based start-up, wants to prevent food allergies in children before they take hold. She says she has a nephew with severe food allergies, and that familial connection makes her job, as she put it, “life’s work.”

The question is whether or not Before Brands’s method to achieve their stated mission will succeed.

The problem, to be sure, is real. Food allergies among children in the United States have become much more prevalent in the 21st century. Around 6 million U.S. children under the age of 18 have food allergies, which amounts to one in every 13 kids, according to the nonprofit Food Allergy Research and Education. Of those, about one-third are allergic to more than one food. All this represents a 50 percent increase in food allergies among U.S. children during the period from 1997 to 2011.  Read more…
