The President says he misspoke during Putin press conference: ‘I said the word would instead of wouldn’t’

President Donald Trump, facing an onslaught of bipartisan fury over his glowing remarks about Vladimir Putin, said more than 24 hours afterward that he misspoke during his summit with the autocratic Russian leader.

Trump Creates a Supreme Court Guessing Game That Would ‘Make P. T. Barnum Proud’

Photo Illustration by Lyne Lucien/The Daily Beast

If the lead-up to President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nomination announcement feels like reality-TV drama, it’s because that’s exactly how it was designed.

But instead of a one-year contract as Trump’s errand boy, the “winner” on Monday night will likely nab a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land and a chance to reshape American law and jurisprudence for generations.

The high stakes of the announcement were nevertheless preceded by a day of wild speculation and tea leaf-reading, designed, some conservatives briefed on the nomination process believe, to prevent a leak of Trump’s decision by flooding the zone with contradictory information. It’s characteristic of a president who revels in the political press spinning its wheels, and is naturally inclined to the sort of primetime TV drama that he helmed as host of NBC’s The Apprentice.

8 Superheroes Who Would Be Lost Without The Women in Their Lives

Scott Lang is lovable in spite of all of his flaws, but no one’s going to accuse the Ant-Man of having his life together any time soon. It’s a miracle that he can even tie his shoes without Hope van Dyne, but, lucky for Scott, she remains in his corner (mostly). Don’t take any of that as a shot on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s favorite gone-straight criminal, there are plenty of superheroes, just like Ant-Man, who would be nothing without the women who support them.

With Ant-Man and the Wasp buzzing into theaters next week, let’s take a look at eight superheroes who are strengthened, supported, and improved by the women in their lives:

Iron Man and Pepper Potts

Whether it’s in the comics or on screen, in a relationship or merely partners, Tony Stark is nothing without Pepper Potts. Billionaire, genius, playboy philanthropist he may be, but not knowing your own social security number is a little bit more restrictive than one might think. It’s not all Tony’s fault, Howard couldn’t function on his own either, but that’s what Jarvis and Peggy were for. As hopeless as he may be, let’s call it a good thing that Tony’s found his soul mate in the saint that is Virginia “Pepper” Potts.

Superman and Lois Lane

Lois and Clark are the quintessential comic book ship. Even when Superman ends up in other pairings for one reason or another, it always comes back to one woman: Lois Lane. Lois doesn’t give Superman his powers. She can’t stop bullets, or run faster than a train, but she is a huge part of Clark Kent’s most important power: his humanity. The Man of Steel might be able to snatch a plane out of the air, but he’s nothing without his ace reporter.

The Green Arrow and Felicity Smoak/Dinah Lance

Good old Oliver Queen has all the charm in the world and could split a strand of hair with that bow and arrow of his. He also happens to be a mess and a half without the women in his life. Dinah Lance is the perfect companion for Ollie’s comic book antics, falling in step with his swagger and having absolutely none of his nonsense. Television’s Oliver Queen might be a few shades darker than his comic book counterpart, but his sometimes agonizingly slow progress wouldn’t have even started without Felicity Smoak.

Zan and Jayna

It’s impossible to have a list of male heroes who can’t function without their female counterparts without including the Wonder Twins. Their powers literally don’t activate without each other! Jayna needs Zan for her powers as well, but with Zan only able to become objects or substances, his super sister is still critical to his functionality as a hero.

The Human Torch and the Invisible Woman

Despite his occasional efforts to act otherwise, Johnny Storm is a hero. Each member of the Fantastic Four makes the team work, but no one has pushed Johnny harder than his sister, Sue. She’s calm in all the ways that he’s rash, and in turn he helps her take risks that she might not have every now and again. Like the Wonder Twins, this sibling superhero pair compliments each other nicely, but it feels safe to say that Johnny wouldn’t be the hero he is without Sue Storm.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl

If there’s one thing Hawkman makes abundantly clear, it’s that he can’t survive without Hawkgirl. Hawkman and Hawkgirl are literally linked across time and space through the power of mutual resurrection. On Legends of Tomorrow, their relationship was less than healthy, but once Hawkgirl started to get her memories back things got a little less pushy on Hawkman’s part.

Spider-Man and Aunt May

They say behind every good man is the woman that raised him. That phrase couldn’t be more right when it comes to Peter Parker and his Aunt May. Uncle Ben might have been the one to bestow the knowledge of great responsibility to Pete, but it was May who had to keep on living and raising a teenager who was still trying to figure out how to deal with being a superhero.

Mon-El and Supergirl

Kara Zor-El might have been a touch discriminatory towards Mon-El because of his Daxamite heritage when the two first met, but eventually they overcame their families’ prejudices and found themselves in a pseudo-relationship. When Mon-El returned from the future, he was hero who had realized that he needed to use his powers for good. This was all because of Supergirl’s influence. He founded the Legion of Superheroes in her memory, making her the reason Mon-El became the hero she knew he could be.

All of this is to say that Scott Lang, lovable mess, isn’t alone in his need for a smart woman to help him out every once in a while. All of these incredible heroes acknowledge that there’s no shame in that either. Just another trait they all share that helps make them incredible.

Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Tim Scott Introduce Bill That Would Make Lynching a Federal Crime

The three African American members of the U.S. Senate—two Democrats and one Republican—have banded together to address one of the most heinous acts perpetrated against blacks for more than a century: lynching.  Senators Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Tim Scott (R-SC) on Friday introduced “The Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2018” to make that willful, collective act of murder punishable as a federal crime, resulting in harsher sentencing under existing hate crime statutes.

In a released statement, the three legislators further explained the importance of the legislation and resistance to its passage in Congress. Asserts Sen. Harris: “Lynching is a dark, despicable part of our history, and we must acknowledge that, lest we repeat it. From 1882 to 1986 there have been 200 attempts that have failed to get Congress to pass federal anti-lynching legislation, it’s time for that to change.”

Sen. Booker says: “It’s a travesty that despite repeated attempts to do so, Congress still hasn’t put anti-lynching legislation on the books. This bill will right historical wrongs by acknowledging our country’s stained past and codifying into law our commitment to abolishing this shameful practice.”

Adds Sen. Scott: “This measure is certainly well past due and I am glad to be able to join in efforts that will underscore the severity of this crime. This piece of legislation sends a message that together, as a nation, we condemn the actions of those that try to divide us with violence and hate.”

The three also fully expect backing from the GOP-controlled Senate, citing in their official statement that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had been recently asked about anti-lynching legislation and responded. “I certainly would support it.”  Moreover, they stated that a similar bill recently introduced in the House by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) and 36 members of the Congressional Black Caucus serves as “a companion” to their measure.

This legislative action coincides with the unveiling of a new study from the NAACP revealing that racially-motivated “hate crimes totals rose for four straight years to the highest level in a decade.” making up nearly 60% of overall crimes with African American still representing the most targeted group.  Officials further believe there is “a direct relationship between the rise in hate crimes exemplified by the continual #LivingWhileBlack incidents and other reported crimes and President Donald J. Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric and racist policies.”

The NAACP, along with other civil rights groups such as the Anti-Defamation League and Equal Justice Initiative, support the measure. And it is being presented at a time when there has been increased national attention on what the EJI cited as an “instrument of terror and intimidation” used against more than 4,000 black men, women, and children during the late 19th and 20th centuries. Moreover, reports indicate that the impact of lynching in the Jim Crow South had been the decimation of countless black businesses and economic devastation of multitudes of African American households. As a result, it is still unknown how much black wealth had been unrealized due to such acts of malice.

The anti-lynching movement dates back to the late 1800s when journalist and civil rights crusader Ida B. Wells investigated the murder of a friend, who had been a successful black Memphis grocer, and his two employees. She discovered that they had been killed by a mob because their business competed against a nearby white-owned store. Wells, who also had her Memphis newspaper offices destroyed in 1892, engaged in a 40-year campaign of exposure and protest.

In 1918, Congressman Leonidas C. Dyer (R-MO) would become the first member of Congress to introduce a bill, seeking to punish authorities unwilling to prevent lynching. That failed effort would represent one of roughly 200 such attempts by Congress. In fact, as recently as 2005, 90 members of the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan resolution apologizing to lynching victims for its continuous inability to enact anti-lynching legislation.

Today, Harris, Booker, and Scott seek to continue the battle and appear to be rallying support within and outside the corridors of Congress. Asserts EJI Executive Director Bryan Stevenson, who founded the Montgomery, Alabama-based National Memorial for Peace and Justice dedicated to lynching victims, of the renewed political urgency: “It is never too late for our nation to express our sorrow for the decades of racial terror that traumatized millions in this country. Passing an anti-lynching law is not just about who we were decades ago, it’s a statement about who we are now that is relevant, important, and timely.”

What Songs Would Make the Cut of Your ’90s R&B ‘Love Is’ Spotify Playlist?

In honor of the new show, Love Is____, which premiered last night on OWN, and following suit of the creators, Mara Brock Akil, Salim Akil, and Oprah Winfrey herself, here is a list of our top 10 ’90s R&B songs (and ones from the early ’00s) that would make our overly indulgent Spotify playlist.

Our ’90s R&B Spotify Playlist

ABOUT LOVE IS_____

Michele Weaver (Illicit) and Will Catlett (Black Lightning) star in OWN’s new romantic drama Love Is__, from award-winning producers Mara Brock Akil (Girlfriends, Being Mary Jane, The Game) and Salim Akil (Black Lightning). According to a recent press release, the show is set primarily in 1990s Los Angeles against the backdrop of Black Hollywood. Love Is__ follows Nuri (Michele Weaver) and Yasir (Will Catlett), a couple from seemingly opposite worlds, as they chase their dreams and learn to follow their hearts.

Told from the perspective of the couple’s present-day selves, the romantic drama also revisits the social issues and vibrant black culture of that time reflecting on how it all aligned to shape the couple they have become nearly 20 years later—a power couple navigating a complex set of social codes while also balancing successful careers and a beautiful family. Drawing inspiration from creators Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil’s own relationship journey, the series explores the highs, the lows, and the magic of falling (and staying) in love.

The OWN show made its debut on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET. In case you missed the first episode, or the trailer that reeked of ’90s nostalgia, Brownstone’s “If You Love Me” led us back down memory lane.

Now it’s your turn. What R&B songs from that era would be on your playlist?

This is what the Galaxy S10 and iPhone X of our dreams would look like

Galaxy S10 vs. iPhone X

If yesterday’s phone launch proves anything, it’s that we’ve reached peak smartphone design. In a world of iPhone X clones, Oppo came up with a crazy new phone that forces itself not to copy the notch. Of course, the irony that the Find X looks just like a Galaxy S/Note or that Color OS looks a lot like Apple iOS doesn’t escape us.

However, the Find X design is hardly perfect. We’ve got a motorized camera system that slides up whenever you want to unlock the phone, take a picture, or take a selfie. It’s a neat concept, but it’s destined to fail for a couple of reasons. The first one I already mentioned, the motorized sliding mechanism. The second one is related to the first one. This phone doesn’t have any water resistance, and that’s not what we want for the future of smartphones.

How Much Bitcoin Would You Spend on a Warhol?

When Andy’s Warhol’s Fourteen Small Electric Chairs goes up for auction on June 20, the painting won’t just entice fine art dealers and collectors. Bitcoin billionaires will no doubt tune in to watch–and maybe buy into–the world’s first-ever public auction in which winners will pay with cryptocurrency.

Would-be buyers will bid on digital certificates using cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ethereum. The auction will also allow for another first: bidders can buy only a fraction of the painting. The auction will be held on blockchain platform Maecenas in partnership with Mayfair-based cryptocurrency broker Dadiani Syndicate.

“This event marks the first-ever artwork to be tokenised and to be sold using blockchain technology,” Maecenas CEO Marcelo Garcia Casil told The Independent, explaining the process through which collectors can now own only a fraction of a piece of art. “We’re making history.”

Technically, art has already been purchased outright with Bitcoin, though this may in fact be the first auction to accept cryptocurrency. In January, four paintings were bought with cryptocurrency at Art Stage Singapore.

Tokenization may not appeal to every collector. But ownership placed on blockchain, or digital ledgers that keep track of every transaction, will enable easy transfer of ownership, and of tracking blue-chip pieces on a market often littered with replicas.

Ahead of the auction, it’s an interesting moment at the intersection of fine art and high-tech financial trading. In a business plagued by counterfeits and all manner of tax evasion and fraud, blockchain digital ledgers may be the best way to track ownership and authenticity across a fragmented market, according to a new report described in the Financial Times.

Fourteen Small Electric Chairs, a 1980 painting from Warhol’s Reversal series, is currently valued by auction house Bonhams at $ 5.3 million, or ?4 million…or about 815 Bitcoin.

‘He Had Everything.’ Anthony Bourdain’s Mother Says She Never Thought He Would Commit Suicide

Anthony Bourdain’s mother has expressed shock and sadness over the death of her son in an interview with the New York Times.

“He is absolutely the last person in the world I would have ever dreamed would do something like this,” Gladys Bourdain, who was an editor at the Times for years, told the newspaper.

Bourdain, the renowned chef and author whose storytelling and traveling influenced others and embraced different cultures, died this week in an apparent suicide. He was 61 years old.

“He had everything,” his mother told the Times. “Success beyond his wildest dreams. Money beyond his wildest dreams.”

Gladys Bourdain told the Times that Eric Ripert, a French chef and close friend of her son’s, told her that Bourdain “had been in a dark mood these past couple of days.”

Bourdain’s death shocked and saddened the world this week as fans and friends of his expressed the impact he had on their lives and the influential role he had in the restaurant industry. Restaurant owners and chefs who he visited in his variety of TV shows point to him as a reason for their growing success, and fans took to social media to express how he used his platform to convey empathy and understanding.

Bourdain’s suicide followed that of Kate Spade, an influential fashion designer who had died in an apparent suicide at age 55, and came at a time when the rates of suicide were on the rise across the U.S. Mental health professionals advised people to reach out and support friends or loved ones who may be struggling, and learn to identify warning signs like depression or changes in behavior, among other behaviors.

The deaths of two influential figures in their respective fields have also provoked conversations about how successful people are not immune depression, mental health issues or suicide. TIME’s Belinda Luscombe detailed this in a piece, where she examined the deaths of Bourdain and Kate Spade, the influential fashion designer who had died by an apparent suicide days earlier. “Many lives are not as they appear. Happiness is not the end result of a sum of accomplishments,” Luscombe writes. “The person whose wealth/wardrobe/job/talent you wish you had has his or her own struggles, and they could at least equal our own.”

If you or someone you know may be contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

The Cosby Verdict: Heathcliff Huxtable Would Have Cheered for #MeToo [Opinion]

The Cosby Show premiered on Thursday, September 20, 1984 at 8PM. I remember it well because I had commandeered the television in the common room of my Smith College dorm to watch it. That meant that anyone else intent on watching TV (most of us didn’t have our own then, kids) was going to have to watch it too.

Only a few of my dorm-mates joined me that night, but our numbers steadily grew until the show became a weekly destination, complete with freshly popped popcorn and dozens of women piling in to watch. For the record, I was one of only three black women in a dorm of 67, many of whom didn’t know any other black people – at least not personally. Although we lived and ate together, many of them barely even knew us.

To this day, it’s hard for me to adequately convey the enormous pride, the joy, the RELIEF I felt as this beautiful showcase of black family life, black love, and black success introduced my fellow Smithies to the world I came from – a different world from theirs, to be sure.

I was just back from a year on exchange at Spelman College (model for The Cosby Show’s Hillman) where I’d traded my mostly white women’s college environment in largely white New England for the unmatched sisterhood of the premiere women’s HBCU in the ATL. Maynard Jackson was mayor then, Jesse Jackson was running for president, and Vanessa Williams was crowned Miss America shortly after I arrived on campus. There was no shortage of budding women of power there with me either, including philanthropist Lovette Russell, AJ Johnson, wellness expert and founder of The AJ Zone, and Starbucks COO Rosalind Brewer.

From The Cosby Show’s first episode, there was so much to love about the Huxtables, not the least of which was that they were unapologetically affluent and black. From the stately Brooklyn brownstone they owned (so like my aunt’s on Carroll Street), to the black music they listened to, the black art on their walls, the distinctive clothes and hairstyles they wore, and the loving, playful way they had with one another.

At the center of it all was Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, the endearing father/husband/physician/son/son-in-law/neighbor we all wanted to have/know/marry/be. The good doctor was a man of character and conviction, unfailingly playful and respectful at the same time. The show was many things, but above all it was an ode to Heathcliff’s devotion to his family, his community, and his patients (all of whom were female, by the way). Perhaps because it was called The Cosby Show and not The Huxtables, we equated Cosby, the man, with the lovable guy he portrayed, morphing them into one and the same.

We now know that Bill Cosby is no Heathcliff Huxtable. Far from it. After a legal battle that spans two criminal trials, and multiple civil procedures dating back 18 years, Cosby has finally been convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault against a former employee of his alma mater, Temple University. At 80, he is facing potential jail time.

Cosby Verdict Is Another Unprecedented Victory for #MeToo

Cosby’s conviction in one of the longest and most compelling such cases ever brought to trial is being touted as an enormous victory for the #MeToo movement. Most of all though, it is a victory for all 62 of his accusers – including five who testified — many of whom lived in silence, shame, and a profound sense of powerlessness for years, and in some cases decades.

According to an article posted by NBC News, Lili Bernard, an accuser who was once a guest on The Cosby Show, wailed so loudly as the verdict was read, she had to be escorted out.

“I feel like my faith in humanity is restored,” she reportedly said through her tears.

Andrea Constand, the 45-year-old woman at the center of the trial’s allegations, has maintained throughout two trials (the first of which ended in a mistrial) that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in his home in January 2004. Constand was widely reported to have remained stoic as the verdict was read.

I have tried to imagine what she must have been feeling beneath her mask of composure. I won’t presume to guess at her full mix of emotions, but among them was no doubt a sense of tremendous relief, and long withheld validation.

Constand and other Cosby accusers, who began surfacing in the public years before the recent (and ongoing) firestorm of accusations against other sexual harrassers and predators in positions of power and prominence, have been largely vilified for years.

Even during this trial, Cosby’s lawyer, Kathleen Bliss, harped on Constand’s 2006 civil settlement payout of nearly $ 3.4 million and portrayed his accusers as pathetic, scorned, delusional, greedy liars. Bernard told NBC News that even the defense’s closing argument “was based solely on rape myths, on victim blaming, on victim shaming and on character assassination of …witnesses that were clearly telling the truth.”

Cosby, who is free on bail while he awaits sentencing, faces a maximum jail time of 10 years and a fine of up to $ 25,000 on each count. He’s an old man now. Self-righteous, seemingly arrogant, angry, and unrepentant, he bears no resemblance to the beloved idol he once created for the small screen. (Just the thought of his having chosen to portray a gynecologist and obstetrician, as opposed to any other kind of doctor, makes me shudder.)

Like most women, I’m relieved, satisfied – encouraged even – that his accusers have prevailed. And yet, its worth noting that their win in no way restores or compensates them for what they’ve lost.

In introducing Tarana Burke, mother of the #MeToo movement, at Variety’s Power of Women luncheon a few weeks ago, actress and passionate women’s rights advocate Viola Davis reminded the enrapt audience of what it means to be a victim of a sexual predator.

“I don’t think people really understand that when sexual assault happens to a woman she describes it like a death,” Davis said. “More than likely, she’s suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, dissociative disorder, she has flashbacks, she has eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, depression. It is traumatic.

“More than likely,” Davis added, “they’re not going to seek therapy, because they’re going to be stigmatized. Stigmatized as being dirty, stigmatized as being overly strong, stigmatized as not being worthy — at all.”

In accepting her award that day, Burke – a survivor herself — clarified what #MeToo really is: “Folks think that this is about blaming and shaming, they think it’s about taking down powerful men, but they’re wrong. Even the women who came forward around Harvey Weinstein didn’t ask for what happened to him. They didn’t even think it was possible. They were simply trying to be heard, trying to be seen and believed. That’s all most survivors want – to not be the only ones holding on to their truths.”

Amidst the Devastation: Renewed Resolve

Finally affirmed by a jury, Cosby’s accusers have been empowered. I am flooded with gratitude for their courage, hope for their healing, and deep admiration for their perseverance and resilience. But there is little to be happy about here.

These women’s lives were indelibly changed by Cosby’s criminal actions, which he continues to deny. And we – not just black Americans, but onetime Cosby fans worldwide, have officially lost another black male hero. That loss is devastating, and one we can ill afford.

But as I begin to contemplate the wreckage of all this on another Thursday evening 26 years after The Cosby Show finale, I am also sifting for the gifts, and here is what I know: First, the court’s affirmation of the women who testified against Cosby, affirms all women – especially those who have been afraid to expose the aggregious acts of those they fear are unduly protected. Those unjust scales are now tipping once and for all.

Second, while Cosby is clearly no Heathcliff Huxtable, plenty of our men are. The loyal husbands and partners; the devoted fathers and grandfathers, and endearing uncles and brothers; the caring neighbors and hardworking earners and dedicated coaches and teachers and role models and leaders who know and show what true manhood is all about – daily — they are all around us. We cannot allow Cosby’s exposure in any way diminish or distract us from the lesser known heroes among us. In fact, we need to celebrate and encourage them even more. (Consider this your personal invitation to BE BMX, next Labor Day Weekend.)

Plenty of men understand that treating women, and all of humanity, with utmost care and respect is a core principal of true manhood. Thanks to these women, and this jury, this verdict reinforces that essential societal and cultural value. It also reminds us of how critically important it is to call out those who abuse and harass, no matter how wealthy or powerful or prominent they may be – and even if they are the president of the free world. Because that’s what freedom is all about.

The outcome of this trial has further fueled the momentum of a movement that will not stop until a much larger victory is won. “We are a constituency, a power base, and we are no longer hiding in the shadows,” Tarana Burke said in a recent speech. “What started as a simple exchange of empathy between survivors has become a rallying cry, a movement builder and a clarion call.”

Two media companies are seeking one of the most sweeping legal orders we’ve seen yet from an Australian court, in an effort to reduce the use of paid pirate IPTV services.

The two motions are being brought by a Hong Kong-based TV firm and Australia’s Roadshow Films, ComputerWorld reports, and they’re trying to shut down pirated IPTV services, normally delivered via Android TV boxes that are cheaply available with software that provides a cable-esque experience without actually paying for channels.

7 tips for FaceTiming with a child who would rather watch TV

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

I just spent a little over a week away from home for a professional development conference, which meant I was forced to communicate with my 3-year-old son by FaceTime.

The expectation is always that FaceTime (or your video chat service of choice) will go very, very well. It will be a tender moment of connection between mother and child. It will be a meaningful exchange in which distance is transcended in mere seconds. It will be the best part of the day.

The reality, however, is that FaceTime with a toddler is a digital hellscape.

A small boy sits at a table touching a tablet, like an iPad

There is no good way to FaceTime with a toddler because:

1. He expects Paw Patrol when he looks at a screen.

2. I am not Paw Patrol.

Whenever this realization hits my child, he looks at me with the same expression I reserve for the DMV when I’ve made an appointment and still end up #87 in line. The only difference is that I’ve learned to stifle my screams. Beyond that, there’s a performative aspect to FaceTime that makes these conversations feel phony.

I was ready to call it quits after a night of him running circles around the iPad, ignoring me in favor of his toys, then a meltdown when I said I was going to hang up. Yet I missed my child. I still wanted to connect with that stinky little muffin of mine, so I tried and tried again until we made it work.

During that time away, I picked up a couple of tricks for making FaceTime chats as painless as possible for kids of any age. Maybe some of them will work for you and yours:

Two babies hover over a tablet computer between them

• Have good lighting. Sometimes this can mean doing FaceTime in the bathroom. (Really, some hotels rooms have perfect selfie light, which also means it’s perfect for a video chat.) As long as you’re not pooping, you’re all good.

• Don’t FaceTime in a busy place. Don’t set up for a chat in the hotel lobby or a coffee shop, if you can help it. The noise and people are too distracting for both you and your child.

• Make eye contact. It can be pretty tempting to look at your own little video square to keep tabs on how hot you are, but stay focused on the kid.

• Bring a book. And by that, I mean a book to read to your child. I like to tuck a few slim Golden Books into my luggage and continue our bedtime story routine, even when I’m away. I hold the pages up as I’m reading, LeVar Burton-style.

• Share a meal. Sometimes conversations with my son feel stilted, as though he has to perform for me. Having a snack or a meal together can take some of that pressure away — even if the bulk of time is spent with him shoveling oatmeal into his mouth.

Be active. Turn up some music and have a dance party. Sing some songs together. Play peek-a-boo.

• Whatever you do, don’t toss a hotel robe over your head and say, “Uh-oh. Mommy disappeared and is never coming home” — no matter how tempted you are to stay in the land of room service.

How do you chat with your child when you’re away?

nuclear bomb map

We live in very bizarre times. Nuclear weapons are commonplace, at least insofar as lots of countries have access to them but never actually use them, but tensions between superpowers never seem to go away. The US is in an open war of words with Russia, while North Korea, despite being on its best behavior lately, is still seemingly a threat to just about everyone. The Middle East is in constant unrest, and nobody knows who, if anyone, they can actually trust. With all that in mind, let’s pretend someone launched a nuke at your house.

Outrider.org is an activist group made up of scientists and experts who hope to curb the worldwide nuclear threat through an information campaign. To that end, they’ve created a freely accessible tool to simulate what would happen if a nuclear weapon were dropped on any particular spot on the globe. The result is both fascinating and frightening.

Should you, would you, take your baby to a brewery?

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

I live in Colorado, where we take our craft beer seriously. I even get annoyed with memes about moms and wine in part because some of us prefer a nice, hoppy IPA or a tasty chocolate stout instead. Denver is constantly opening new craft breweries and the trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

Most breweries we frequent are low-key establishments. They don’t serve food, so you’re allowed to bring in your own from home or from a nearby food truck or restaurant. People sit at long tables, picnic-style, and chat or play games or watch the Rockies. It’s a great, laid-back way to spend a weekend afternoon.

And yeah – many of us bring our kids.

We usually pack the kids a snack, and we’ll order them a soft drink or house-brewed root beer if it’s available. And they hang out and play board games or cards. My 4th grader brought his homework once. Last month, we discovered Girl Scouts selling cookies at our neighborhood brewery. We never got to the point of having our baby’s birthday party there, but I can see the argument for it. If your child has no idea they’re turning one, and their friends also have no idea what’s going on (because they’re babies), shouldn’t the adults at least enjoy themselves?

Parents are starting to get some pushback now. Some adults would like breweries to only be for those old enough to actually drink the beer. And some breweries are even cracking down, with special kid hours and rules for parents.

I view breweries like I view restaurants. You can generally tell which restaurants are family-friendly because they have highchairs and kid menus and other children milling around. They have non-breakable glasses and wipeable tablecloths. And you can always check Yelp reviews to help you out if you’re not sure.

Breweries are much the same – kid-friendly ones have plenty of space for families, and board games to play, and soda offerings as well as the beer. They just have a kid-welcome vibe about them that establishments for adults don’t…and if you’re uncertain, a little online research can usually tell you in less than 5 minutes. I also think there’s a big difference between neighborhood pubs or breweries and bars – I can see the arguments for no babies in bars (though I did that once or twice, too!). But breweries are much more relaxed.

As long as we’re all being considerate, babies and kids in breweries are no big deal…and are actually a lot of fun. And if anyone’s having a children’s party at one, add me to the guest list.

Would you take your baby to a brewery?

EXCLUSIVE: Mark Hamill On What a Luke Skywalker Spin-Off Would Look Like

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker finally meets his maker. Or so it seems. What? We said there were spoilers. So how does it happen? Well, Luke over-exerts himself while projecting his image onto the planet Crait. His plan is to distract Kylo Ren in an effort to help Rey and her fellow band of Resistance fighters escape. Cut to Luke Skywalker’s physical form — which never left the island of Ahch-To — and we see his cape crumple to the rock beneath him as his earthly body dissipates.

A tweet to the Star Wars actor suggesting Luke’s mechanical hand would have clanked down on the rock if this meant he’d died caused Hamill to speculate that, instead, Skywalker actually teleported to a “planet of nudists”. While that’s something every Star Wars fan didn’t know they needed to see, Hamill expanded on a more plausible spin-off idea when chatting to FANDOM recently.

A Religious Leader

“There’s such an interesting period that they skipped over where he had a Jedi academy,” says Hamill. “Because you figure at the end of the last trilogy, what’s next for him?”

The Last Jedi continues straight on after the conclusion of The Force Awakens, which reintroduced Luke to the saga as a hermit living on a remote island. It picks up around 30 years after we last saw Luke reuniting with his father, Obi-Wan and Yoda in the form of Force ghosts at the end of Return of the Jedi.

For Hamill, the broad question of what’s next for Luke begets a series of more specific, probing questions that could be explored in a spin-off centering on this period of the character’s history.

“Does he become like the Pope of the Jedi religion? Is there anybody bigger?” he asks. “Maybe there is. Maybe he has to go and study in a monastery.”

Back to Tatooine

While we learned snippets about this interim period from the two films in the new sequel trilogy, there’s still plenty that hasn’t been broached that Hamill would like to see expanded upon.

“That’s the thing, George [Lucas] created a canvas that is so large, the possibilities are endless,” says Hamill. “I’d like [a spin-off] to focus on Luke helping younger people because they’re our future and you’d like to think that the best things, the positive things, that you learn from Star Wars are aspects like doing what’s right for the greater good, rather than thinking about what helps you. The selflessness involved, I like that. And I’d like to think that it has a positive influence on kids.”

Hamill thinks it would be difficult, though not impossible, to create another adventure for Luke on his home planet of Tatooine, with Luke around the same age as when we meet him in A New Hope.

“People say: ‘Do you think there could be a young Luke Skywalker Movie? I say: ‘There’s already been one. It’s called Star Wars,’” says Hamill. “Because [Luke] was a teenager. The whole point of the first one was he was bored silly on his planet so unless they were able to do a story where they cut to other stories and there’s things going on on his planet that he doesn’t know about, I don’t know how you’d really involve him without it reflecting in the first time you saw him. But, like I say, there’s so many possibilities and so many great writers out there, I’m sure they’ll come up with something.”

Young Luke Frontrunners

So who could play a younger Luke? Hamill ruminates on the qualities of both Bucky Barnes actor Sebastian Stan and young Room and Wonder star Jacob Tremblay.

“People say: ‘Oh, [Sebastian Stan] looks just like you, he looks like your son,’ and I think he’s said he’d love to play [Luke]. I hate to put my thumb on the scales and say he’s got my stamp of approval because I think he’s a wonderful actor, he could probably do anything, but I don’t want to prevent somebody who doesn’t have the notoriety of Sebastian to have his shot at it,” he says.

Stan-Tremblay
Sebastian Stan (left) and Jacob Tremblay (right) have the qualities to play a young Luke Skywalker.

“I also met Jacob Tremblay at The Book of Henry [premiere], and he’s a wonderful little boy and a big Star Wars fan. I just thought he had such composure beyond his years in his little suit. But it depends on what age you want to meet Luke. Because I guess Jacob is only 10 or 11, in that range. So I don’t know.”

He adds, “I wouldn’t presume to know. There’s probably unknowns. I certainly was unknown when I got to play him.”

First things first, though. Let’s just hope we’ll see more from Mark Hamill in the role when Episode IX hits screens next year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on Blu-ray and DVD in the US on March 27 and available via Digital Download now. In the UK you can get your hands on the film on all formats from April 9.

New Facebook-Backed Law Would Let Foreign Governments Get Your Data Without a Warrant

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Facebook, plunged into crisis by the Cambridge Analytica revelations, is now scrambling to assure users – and investors – that this time, their data really, truly is secure. And on a recent post-crisis media blitz, founder Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized that the mass exfiltration of scads of profiles from unsuspecting Facebook users was a vestige of a past privacy practice, not a symptom of anything wrong with current Facebook policy.

Yet Facebook urged Congress to pass a measure, the CLOUD Act, that privacy advocates warn makes it easier for a foreign government to acquire Americans’ emails, pics, videos and other online data, and then share that with U.S. law enforcement. It also makes it easier for those foreign governments to get the online lives of their own citizens from the servers of companies like Facebook.

Congress tucked the CLOUD Act into its omnibus spending bill – the measure it passed in the wee hours of Friday morning to avert a government shutdown. President Trump, after vacillating, signed it into law today.

Rose McGowan: Harvey Weinstein ‘Would Prefer It If I Were Dead’

Rose McGowan claims in a new interview that disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who she has accused of sexually assaulting her, wishes she was dead.

The Charmed alum, 44, is among more than 50 women who have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, and told Britain’s Sunday People that she has been followed and intimidated since she went public with her allegation last year that Weinstein, 65, raped her in his hotel room in Park City, Utah, in 1997.

“I’m sure he would prefer it if I were dead,” she told Sunday People. “He’s a sociopath. I am not afraid — but I should be. The people I find worse than him are his lawyers. The way they are acting has been disgusting.

“The people around him, that have supported him in his attempt to dominate and abuse women, are monsters, just as much as he is,” she continued. “There is no rehabilitation for that type of soul. They just need to fall off the planet. He doesn’t believe he has done anything wrong.”

As previously reported, Weinstein has denied McGowan’s assault claims, with his lawyer telling Us Weekly in a statement in January that McGowan was trying “to smear Mr. Weinstein with a bold lie.”

He has also denied claims by other women including Ashley Judd, Mira Sorvino, Annabella Sciorra and Daryl Hannah, with his spokesperson saying, “Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual.”

The allegations surfaced in October 2017 after The New York Times published an expose claiming Weinstein had a history of sexual misconduct dating back 30 years. He was fired from his own company in the wake of the allegations and his wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, announced she was leaving him. Weinstein subsequently said he was seeking treatment and was spotted near a clinic in Arizona.

The allegations sent shockwaves through Hollywood and prompted the formation of the Time’s Up movement to provide legal defense for women who have faced sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace.

“Things are changing,” McGowan told Sunday People. “But there’s still so much to do. It’s about changing people’s lives.”

The actress told the newspaper that she is also planning to take further action against the former studio head, who she believes hired an Israeli spy company to harass her.

“It was violation on top of violation,” the Brave author said. “I believe they hacked my computer, released photos — they have done everything they can to ruin my life.”

Which Queen Would Win a Winner’s Edition of ‘Drag Race’?

With seasons 10, 11, and 12 on the horizon and a winner participating on All Stars 3, the chance of a winners-only edition of All Stars is bigger than evah! So, we decided to rank every Drag Race winner (so far) from least to most likely to win the ultimate title of “Queen of Queens.” This list will be updated each time a new winner is crowned.

Tyra Sanchez (Season 2)

Tyra Sanchez from RuPaul's Drag Race
A bad attitude makes for bad odds.

Tyra slayed Season 2 of Drag Race. Her polished looks earned her three main challenge victories and the crown. Unfortunately, Tyra isn’t the most-beloved queen. Thanks to her recent tirades on social media, the queen has earned herself a bad reputation.

If All Stars keeps its current formula, her proclivity toward unnecessary drama could earn her an enemy or two. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if her behavior sent her packing early.

Bebe Zahara Benet (Season 1)

Bebe from RuPaul's Drag Race

In Season 1, Bebe snatched two challenge victories and the crown, proving herself worthy of the title “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Not only is she fierce, but she’s also the original winner of Drag Race.

During her time on All Stars 3, she has proven that she’s still a force to be reckoned with. She has poise, owns the runway, and has good lip-syncing skills. But, when compared to other winners, her acting is subpar, and her looks just scream “old-school drag.” It would be difficult for Bebe to come out on top in this battle royale.

Sharon Needles (Season 4)

Season 4 Winner, Sharon Needles.
Sharon would need more than makeup to stand out from the crowd.

Miss Needles is one of the few queens who volunteered to participate in a winner’s edition after Mama Ru came up with the idea. She’s a fun queen. During Season 4, Sharon snatched four victories thanks to her extravagant, almost-spooky looks.

While she has phenomenal makeup skills, it’s surprising that her looks aren’t as impressive as the other queens on this list. The same can be said for her acting skills. Without bringing something new to the show, it isn’t likely that she would stand out from the other queens.

Jinkx Monsoon (Season 5)

Season 5 Winner, Jinkx Monsoon
Never underestimate a simple but highly polished look.

Seattle’s self-proclaimed “premier Jewish narcoleptic drag queen,” Jinkx Monsoon, proved that we shouldn’t underestimate the ugly duckling. Even when faced with luminaries like Alaska and Detox, she never backed down. Her strange sense of humor and quirky personality helped her snatch two victories from the claws of Rolaskatox along with the crown.

She has a great voice and simple but polished looks. Of course, her chances of winning depend on the challenges given. Her skills could keep her safe from eliminations up until the finale, but she will most likely get sent home halfway through the competition.

Bob the Drag Queen (Season 8)

Season 8 Winner, Bob the Drag Queen
Bob the Drag Queen represents her city well.

Walking into this ranking “purse first” is Bob the Drag Queen. As a New York queen, Bob reminds us why the region’s drag is famous worldwide. She’s entertaining to watch, as her acting skills are superiors to most of the queens on this list. Not only that, Bob knows how to best show off her key strengths.

Bob’s three victories in Season 8 prove that she’s a fierce competitor. But while a great queen and, admittedly, a bit of a show-off, Bob would still need to take down other queens who excel in the same categories, such as Bianca Del Rio.

Sasha Velour (Season 9)

Season 9 Winner, Sasha Velour
Beauty and brains make Sasha Velour a force to be reckoned with.

The current queen, Sasha Velour, is the perfect mix of experimental art and haute couture. As if that wasn’t already enough to make you love her, this brilliant queen also has a deep understanding LGBTQ history and social issues. Not only is she the smartest queen in the Werk Room, but she also comes up with some shocking new looks and is a decent actor.

She may not have been as charismatic as Shea or as fishy as Trinity, but she knew how to use everything in her repertoire to her advantage. Her efforts earned her two victories and the crown. If she brings it, she will easily get into the top four.

Raja Gemini (Season 3)

Raja Gemini, Winner of Season 3
Does Raja have what it takes to win the ultimate crown?

Come on, we’re talking about Raja here. Even though she comes from one of the earliest seasons of Drag Race, she still has it all — including excellent makeup and runway skills.

Whenever she’s on screen, her creativity shines through. (She even has a very popular Youtube show.)  It’s no wonder she’s so popular both in and out of drag.

Raja has elevated her look and style since her Season 3 win. If she can keep her head in the game, she will undoubtedly “toot” her way into the top four.

Violet Chachki (Season 7)

Season 7 Winner, Violet Chachki
Season 7 Winner, Violet Chachki

Miss Chachki will bring the body-odyody to the competition. During her time on Season 7, Violet proved her runway skills and sense of fashion were unbeatable. The confident queen won two well-deserved victories before capturing the crown.

Violet brings a lot to the table, including sickening looks, fishiness, and some light shade. She isn’t as funny or nice as the other queens on this list. But her acting skills and fishy looks are enough to take her straight to the top.

Bianca del Rio (Season 6)

Season 6 Winner, Bianca del Rio
If Bianca finds a way to vary her looks, she will be unstoppable.

With her Rolodex of Hate, Biana del Rio is most likely to be a season frontrunner. The amazing seamstress has the skill to win nearly every acting challenge. She would definitely give all of the other winners a run for their money.

Bianca captivated the judges, gaining three victories. Not to mention, she also beat out larger-than-life queens like Courtney Act and Adore Delano to win the crown. During her time on the show, she received only one consistent critique: that her looks were a tad repetitive. If Bianca can overcome this minor blemish, she will likely win the finale and snatch the ultimate crown.

And Now We Wait

RuPaul from Drag Race
We’ll have to wait and see.

Every queen on this list has a lot to offer, but until the rumored winner’s edition airs, all we can do is speculate about who could win the crown. In the meantime, let us know who you think would win at @getFANDOM.

Stormy Daniels turned on the speakerphone when President Trump called.

So says Keith Munyan, one of the four people Stormy Daniels included in the nondisclosure agreement she signed with Donald Trump’s lawyer. Munyan confirmed critical elements of the alleged romantic tryst between the porn star and the future president, and added new details to a tawdry saga that has rocked the White House.

Munyan, a longtime friend of Daniels, remembers eavesdropping on a half-dozen phone calls between her and the future president.

Who knew this thrift-shop find would offer hours of priceless family bonding?

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

When my husband brought home a record player he found at a thrift store last year, I rolled my eyes. We are not skinny-jean-wearing, man-bun-loving hipsters. Actually, my husband has very little hair at all but we do not speak of this. I thought this vinyl business was a passing interest that he’d have for a week or two and then we’d all move on and I’d have to find somewhere to put this piece of junk.

But the kids were intrigued. They were fascinated by everything that went into actually playing music. It wasn’t just a push of an on-screen button. There was work involved – finding the records, putting them on the turntable, placing the arm and the needle on the vinyl, hitting play, adjusting an actual knob that turned. It was a whole process, and they began to clamor to pick the music at dinnertime.

Going back to vinyl record albums also broadened our listening repertoire. If I download music for us, it’s usually kids’ songs or current music. Even satellite radio stations from different decades tend to focus on only the most popular songs of the time.  But the record player inspired us to branch out. My parents heard we had a player and sent the records they collected as newlyweds – groups like The Supremes and Simon and Garfunkel. They gave us records of classical music beyond what you hear on the radio. We bought records at thrift stores as well, which weren’t exactly recent. We found early Elton John and Stevie Wonder. Michael Jackson’s first album. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (anyone? Anyone have any idea what I’m talking about? See, this is why you need a record player.)

Our thrift store record trips became something the kids looked forward to. Their dad would take one or two of them with him, and they’d browse together, picking up anything that looked good, or unfamiliar, or very, very strange (you can do that when you’re spending a dollar a record). They’d come running in the house, full of excitement to play their latest find.

I promise I’m not one of those people who’s obsessed with the past and thinks everything was better then. I love my podcasts and my satellite radio and these tiny amazing music machines that let me listen while I’m on a run. That record player, though – there’s something special going on there.

Does your family have an unusual bonding activity?

DJ Jazzy Jeff Believes Chance The Rapper Would Be “A Really Good Fresh Prince”

32nd Annual Grammy Awards - Press Room

Source: Ron Galella, Ltd. / Getty

While in Poland for the Red Bull 3Style World Finals, DJ Jazzy Jeff sat down with HipHopDX and discussed his thoughts about the potential of a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remix.

Jazzy Jeff declared that he believes Chance The Rapper would make a great successor to the Fresh Prince. Will Smith’s right-hand man stated, “Chance is a trailblazer and Will has always been a trailblazer,” Jazzy Jeff said.

Jazzy Jeff referred to Chance’s “light-hearted demeanor” with a “serious side” and how he’s “always smiling” as reasons why he would make a really good Fresh Prince.

The Philadelphia legend went on to praise Chance’s business acumen stating, “And I think for Chance to be as young as he is, to remain independent, to understand just even a little bit about the music industry, I think is great because it’s very easy to fall into those pitfalls. It’s very easy for someone to bring you a suitcase full of money, and it changes your entire perspective instead of realizing, ‘I probably could have 10 suitcases full of money if I just keep my product to myself.’”

Rumors of a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot have stirred up the internet. With this commentary from DJ Jazzy Jeff, the excitement will continue to rise. While we wait for updates, who do you believe would make a good Fresh Prince?

Today would have been Kurt Cobain’s 51st birthday, and Courtney Love shared an emotional tribute

Today would have been Kurt Cobain’s 51st birthday, and Courtney Love shared an emotional tribute

Early on Tuesday, February 20th, Courtney Love shared an emotional tribute to Kurt Cobain on her Instagram and Twitter accounts. The musician was best known for his work with Nirvana, and passed away in 1994 at the age of 27. February 20th would have been Kurt Cobain’s 51st birthday.

Love shared a short, sweet, and heartbreaking message to her late husband on social media.

She posted an intimate black and white photograph of the two cuddling, sometime in the early ’90s. “Happy birthday, baby,” Love captioned it, “God, I miss you.” It’s not clear when exactly the photo was taken, or by whom, or what they were doing at the time. But just from looking at it, you can tell it’s an authentic, honest portrait of a couple in love.

The two were married from 1992-1994, and shared a deep connection.

Cobain even helped produce an album with Love’s band, Hole. They lived together, attended events together, and shared daughter Frances Bean Cobain, whom the Nirvana frontman absolutely adored. Frances Bean, now 25, posted her own tribute to her late father on Instagram. “I hope they don’t have the internet wherever you are; I feel like that would be counterproductive,” she wrote, “Regardless, Happy Birthday to an angel.”

happy birthday baby god I miss you

A post shared by Courtney Love Cobain (@courtneylove) on

Frances Bean was just a toddler when her father passed, and every photo of the two of them together is more heartwarming than the last. Whether they were playing with kittens together, just hanging out, or on the red carpet together, the father-daughter duo was an early ’90s inspiration.

After the Nirvana frontman passed away, Love did not remarry; and she’s been using the name Courtney Love Cobain for some time. Frances, who works as an artist and model, is now divorced from Isaiah Silva, and recently celebrated two years of sobriety.

Our thoughts are with Courtney and Frances on this emotional day.

Shop Like You Normally Would and Help Pay for College With Upromise

It’s no secret that paying for college is expensive and many people, myself included, turned to student loans to get the funding necessary to graduate. But what if there was another way? What if you could get cash toward your college education just for buying the things you normally would? That’s where Upromise comes in.

Upromise is a Sallie Mae-owned program created to help people save for college, pay off student loans, fund their kids’ 529 college savings accounts or simply get cash back to use however they like. It’s a popular way for parents to add to their kids’ college savings plans without too much effort.

Wait, Upromise Pays Me to Shop?

Upromise is quite simple. You sign up, link your credit, debit and even loyalty cards, and shop as you normally would in-store or through the Upromise shopping portal.

Stores partner with Upromise to offer customers cash back on purchases. Upromise members can then use that cash back for whatever they like. Keep in mind that there used to be a Upromise app but it’s no longer available.

How Do I Sign Up for Upromise?

Signing up for Upromise is straightforward and simple. First go to the Upromise enrollment page and enter your basic information. You’ll create a password, enter your address and explain what you’re saving for, like your own education or your child’s education. You can even add another beneficiary in this section if you need to. I went through the process and easily added my daughter and son to my Upromise account.

The next section will ask you to link your credit and debit cards. You can choose to skip this if you like, but I entered the information for the payment card I use the most. Upromise will automatically credit me cash back for qualifying purchases I make.

Where to Shop to Get Upromise Rewards

The Upromise shopping portal is pretty impressive, as there are hundreds of retailers that partner with Upromise. Some stores you might be familiar with include Kohls, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

When you want to purchase something from one of these retailers, log in to your Upromise dashboard and click the link to that store before shopping. That’s it. After you complete your order, Upromise will deposit the cash back from your order into your Upromise account.

If you look on Upromise’s homepage, it even has a deal of the day where you’ll get a higher percentage back than normal. For example, you might get 7% cash back instead of 5%.

There’s a Upromise Credit Card Too

The Upromise Rewards Mastercard not only works on your everyday expenses, you can also get an extra 5% cash back when you use it to shop through the Upromise shopping portal or at participating restaurants.

What’s more, you don’t have to shop at Upromise partners to get cash back. You get 2% cash back when using your Upromise Rewards Mastercard at department stores and movie theaters, and 1% back for every other purchase. While it might not seem like much initially, small amounts can certainly add up over time.

You can view the most common questions about the Upromise credit card here as well as get more information about the benefits of using it.

Rally Friends and Family to Save Big Money

The great thing about Upromise is that your family and friends can sign up for free, and list you or your children as the beneficiaries. So, if your dad sets up an account and links his cards, any cash back rewards he earns will go to the beneficiaries he lists.

One common complaint about the Upromise program is that members don’t earn enough cash back. However, with family and friends, you can maximize your Upromise rewards potential.

Sure, a few dollars here and there in your account won’t pay for much more than a textbook. Yet, imagine if you rallied your family and close friends, and asked them to create accounts? It takes only five minutes to sign up, and it’s an easy set-it-and-forget-it type of benefit.

Spending Those Upromise Dollars

Once you link your cards or get the Upromise credit card and start earning cash back, there are several ways to use your Upromise dollars. You can take the simple approach, which is to get a check for the cash you earned and send your dollars directly to a participating college savings account. Or you can enroll in a Upromise savings account called GoalSaver.

GoalSaver, much like other Upromise products, offers incentives and bonuses for using it. It’s a high-yield savings account, which means it earns more interest than your average savings account. There are no monthly fees and you can earn up to a 10% match on your money. Plus, you stay motivated by sharing your goals with your friends and family on social media.

Upromise offers other incentives, like cash in your account for having a GoalSaver account for a few years. Keep in mind that you need to read the terms and conditions closely, especially when it comes to the 10% match. There are some pretty specific requirements to qualify, so read carefully.

Additionally, Upromise offers rewards for meeting your goals. For example, account holders with automatic deposits can receive a $ 10 bonus each year. Also, GoalSavers who deposit $ 5,000 and retain at least that balance for three years are eligible to receive a $ 100 bonus.

What Experts Think About Upromise

Of course, many cash-back programs like this seem great on paper, but do they really work? I reached out to two financial experts who use Upromise to get an accurate review of it. Here’s what they had to say:

Kathryn Hanna, a CPA and financial blogger, uses Upromise as an alternative to other cash-back websites. She said, “I’ve been focusing recently on increasing my contributions to 529 plans for each of my three children, and this was a great solution to add that little bit of extra with nearly no additional work on my part.” Kathryn also uses Upromise cash back offers when she buys items online and links her credit cards to it to get cash back at restaurants and other retail stores.

Emily Guy Birken, an accomplished money expert and author of several personal finance books, signed up with Upromise in 2005. While she originally thought she’d use the funds for her own education, she decided to add her rewards to her children’s 529 accounts. Emily also has a Upromise credit card, which is her primary means of earning benefits.

She told me, “Having a credit card that gives me cash back toward Upromise is actually very helpful. I generally have about $ 50 quarterly to put into my boys’ 529 accounts. It’s not a huge amount of money, but I prefer this to other cash-back credit cards… I just use the card as I normally would and consider whatever I get to be a nice bonus to the money I’m already putting aside in the 529 accounts.”

What these Upromise reviews show is that many people can benefit from the perks Upromise offers — even financial experts! After all, if you’re going to get cash back from something you planned to buy anyway, why not have that money go toward your children’s future or your own education?

In sum, Upromise is a program that lets you pay back your student loans or add to your children’s college savings accounts in a number of ways. Membership is free, and you can even get cash back for things like eating at a restaurant or booking a flight.

Who doesn’t like free money, especially when it can help fund an education?

Catherine Alford is an award-winning family finance expert and financial writer who lives in Detroit, Michigan, and blogs at CatherineAlford.com. When she is not working, she enjoys yoga, spending time with her 3-year-old boy/girl twins, and doing DIY projects around the house.

Top 5 Cities That Would Benefit the Most by the ‘LeBron Effect’

With three NBA championships and four MVP awards under his belt, LeBron James is arguably one of the greatest basketball players of all time. But the league’s most dominant player has much more to offer a city than an NBA title; his mere presence can change the immediate area’s entire economy.

Where the King Goes, the Money Follows

A 2017 study published by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) quantified the effects that the 33-year-old forward had in Cleveland with the Cavaliers and his brief stint in Miami when he played for the Heat from 2011 to 2014. The data revealed that James’ presence in both of these cities had a huge impact on their local economies by boosting restaurant revenue, ticket sales, and job creation. According to the report, the number of eateries and bars within a mile of the stadium where James was based at the time increased by 13%. In turn, employment within those establishments increased by 23.5%. While, on the other hand, those numbers dropped when James was not on either team.

“James has a statistically and economically significant positive effect on both the number of restaurants and other eating and drinking establishments near the stadium where he is based, and on aggregate employment at those establishments,” wrote the co-authors of the report, Daniel Shoag, an associate professor of Harvard Kennedy School and Stan Veuger of AEI.

Likewise, James’ return to Cleveland in 2014 had an immediate effect on his hometown’s economy. Shortly after James announced his return, ticket sales spiked by more than 100 times, jumping from $ 25 at one point to a staggering average of $ 386. Nonetheless, season tickets sold out within hours. Plus, Cleveland.com reported in 2015 that James’ return to Ohio resulted in a nine-figure economic boost for downtown Cleveland.

The LeBron Effect On Other Cities

James, who currently has a $ 100 million contract with the Cavaliers, will have the option to head to free agency following the 2018 season. Naturally, there’s speculation about his potential new destination and how the city would benefit economically. A new study released Thursday exclusively to Black Enterprise took a look at the cities that would benefit the most if King James joined their NBA team. The study, which was conducted by FormSwift and aptly titled the “LeBron HQ3 Sweepstakes,” analyzed data based on the following criteria:

  • The number of new jobs potentially created for LeBron’s chosen city
  • The local economic impact (including state tax revenue) over a five-year contract
  • What the city should offer LeBron in its bid to bring him to their team

New York City

The results found that New York would gain the biggest economic boost if James signed a five-year contract with the Knicks. According to the report, James would have a $ 1.7 billion economic impact in New York, bringing the state $ 1.2 million in tax revenue and over 12,000 new jobs over a five-year period.

In comparison, if the NBA star signed with the Brooklyn Nets, the state’s economy would receive about $ 441 million, 3,334 jobs, and $ 32 million in state tax revenue.

Washington, D.C.

Should the All-Star athlete join the Washington Wizards, he would bring the nation’s capital over $ 66 million in state tax revenue, 3,200 jobs, and more than $ 444 million in total local economic impact in five years.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles would benefit from a $ 396 million economic impact if James joined either the Lakers or the Clippers. In addition, the city would gain about 3,000 jobs and $ 29 million in state tax revenue.

Boston

Should the superstar athlete decide to join the Celtics, then Boston would gain a $ 24 million tax revenue boost, along with a $ 376 million, five-year local economic impact, and more than 2,500 new jobs.

Toronto

If James moved to Toronto to play with the Raptors, the Canadian city would gain $ 20 million in tax revenue and almost 4,000 jobs. In total, James would have a $ 397 million economic impact within five years.

Hence, no matter where James goes in 2019, one thing is for sure: business will follow.

Check out the LeBron HQ3 Sweepstakes ranking below.

Would You Wear This Daring Bag Trend?

We love testing out the weirdest, most whimsical and out-there trends of the moment. We saw fanny packs come sprinting back into the fashion spotlight last year, confirming that “dad” style and anything with a loose tie to ’90s nostalgia is going nowhere. But while the sporty bag achieved major popularity, it’s the fanny pack’s sleeker cousin we’re looking at: the belt bag. Daring, yes. Doable? Debateable. If you’re still hesitant about trying out belt bags for yourself, let these stylish women teach you a lesson in making the “out-there” bag so cool and wearable.

This stylish Norwegian makes a strong case for a polished belt bag, wearing hers over her trench coat.
Play up the whimsical nature of this fun bag trend by opting for an opulent color palette. Obviously, a fuschia velvet-finished Gucci version does this impeccably well. Shop similar: Gucci GG Marmont Matelassé Velvet Belt Bag ($ 980)
Of course, the reigning queen of cool style can make an artful belt bag the statement piece of her award show look. Solange styled the rest of her look around the eclectic bag shape, opting for a pared-back black jumpsuit and equally standout earrings. On Solange: Vere Verto Deco Bag in Black ($ 340)
Still wondering how to make belt bags actually wearable? Hanna Stefansson’s particular brand of Swedish pragmatism is a great example of how it can be done. On Hanna Stefansson: COS Belted Pocket Bag ($ 69)
And now, the Italian-girl way to wear a belt bag, which involves luxurious pieces like a silk robe and pretty flats.
We can’t get enough of this super-sleek look and double wraparound belt bag.
Yes, you can wear a belt bag casually too. Opt for a cool graphic T-shirt and relaxed-fit or deconstructed jeans.
Double up on bags—whoever said one was enough never witnessed this chic look.
This fashion trifecta is a must-try for the trend-forward women among us: beret + blazer + belt bag.
Minimalists everywhere, take a cue from Canadian blogger Elif Filyos and wear your belt bag just like this. On Elif Filyos: Urban Outfitters Lera Croc Convertible Belt Bag ($ 34)
Ever the trendsetter, KJ opted for an oversize denim jacket and tiny sunglasses with her Prada bag, giving us all ’90s-era style envy.
Mark our words: Girls with a bit of grunge style will all be wearing this Bella Hadid look in no time.
Let your pretty belt bag take center stage by using it to cinch your waist over a longer midi dress. Shop the style: Gucci GG Marmont Matelassé Leather Belt Bag ($ 1100)
Man Repellers are all going crazy over Leandra’s use of mixed prints and traditionally clashing colors. As usual, the unexpected works on her.
A business casual look with a belt bag? You’re not alone if you thought the previous sentence was an oxymoron. Yet this look is all the proof we need that elevated belt bags (this one is a previous season Loewe style) can be office-approved, too.
It’s no surprise Kim Kardashian West’s Alexander Wang leather fanny pack sold out the moment she wore it out in public. (Okay, we’re exaggerating a tad there, but the celeb-loved bag is basically nowhere to be found on the internet.)
An updated suit will surely balance out the bag’s forward style. But no matter how you plan to try out this daring bag trend, keeping it consistent with your own personal style will help it all seem wearable. And now, shop our editors’ selection of belt bags that you’ll actually be able to pull off.

Helen Mirren Would Love to Play Donald Trump

Dame Helen Mirren wants Alec Baldwin’s job. If Baldwin ever gets tired of playing President Donald Trump. on Saturday Night Live, the Oscar-winning actress told a crowd at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & TV last month that she would love to test her skills by playing Trump.

“I’d be so funny as Trump,” Mirren said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I love it. I’ve almost got the hair!”

It’s not just a lark, for Mirren, though. She thinks playing the President of the United States would be a challenge even for her formidable acting skills. “I mean what a fascinating character. What an extraordinary character. I mean that’s a character isn’t it, the real thing?” she said. “But you know, a fantastic sort of slightly Shakespearean character. He may have a Shakespearean fall, I don’t know but you know, he is an extraordinary character.”

As an actress, Mirren knows that she would need to get into Trump’s mind to properly portray him, and she is fully prepared to do it. “I don’t think that would be too difficult to penetrate [his mind] quite honestly,” she said. “You look at the upbringing. You look at the schooling, the father, the mother. I don’t know much about Mr. Trump’s background, but if I was to play him, I would definitely start there. You have to start with the child, and the child is very much in Trump.” Hopefully Saturday Night Live will give Mirren the chance to fulfill her dream.

How Much a Trip to the 2018 Winter Olympics Would Cost You

Why simply watch the 2018 Winter Olympic games on television when you can be there in person and feel feel the energy of the crowd?

The 2018 Winter Olympic Games kick off in Pyeongchang, South Korea on Feb. 9, 2017. Athletes from roughly 90 countries, as well as hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to descend on the region for the 17 days of intense competition in sports like ice hockey, skiing, figure skating and curling.

As with any popular event, you’ll need to start planning and booking your trip in advance for the best experiences and values. Booking site Fareness.com has already seen an uptick in searches to South Korea during October, indicating people are planning potential travel.

Whether you’re looking to splurge on a front-row experience to see your favorite sports or simply get by on a shoestring budget, MONEY scouted the options and priced out what it really costs to spend a week at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Sample Budget

$ 915: Average flight cost from the U.S. to Seoul’s Incheon International Airport

$ 200: Pyeongchang Rail Pass from Seoul

$ 1,870: Average cost of a hotel for a week near the Games

$ 1,548: Four ticket packages to alpine skiing, pairs figure skating, speed skating, men’s hockey match and snowboarding

$ 150: Meals

_________________

Total: $ 4,683

Tickets

Scoring tickets to the actual events is still possible, but prices can vary widely depending on what you want to attend and which seating section you opt for. For example, tickets for the Opening Ceremony start at just over $ 400, but a front-row seat is currently selling on Stubhub for as high as $ 5,946. Depending on which countries make it to the medal rounds, you may be able to score resale tickets cheaper closer to various events.

For U.S. residents, there are still plenty of event tickets left on the Games’ official vendor, CoSport/Jet Set Sports. For example, you can purchase a two-day package that includes ski jumping and figure skating for $ 480. But keep in mind that the medal rounds for popular sports command a high price. A ticket package for a men’s hockey playoff game and medal ceremony is going for about $ 1,739.

Flights

Flights from the U.S. to Seoul are averaging about $ 915 for the timeframe around the Olympics, according to airfare prediction app Hopper. And despite it being about 125 miles from the Olympic Stadium in Pyeongchang, Incheon International Airport is really your best bet to get to the Olympic Games on time, says Fareness founder and CEO Scott ‎Wainner.

Out of major U.S. cities, Fareness found that a seven-day trip from L.A. to Seoul was currently the cheapest at a mere $ 694 for those leaving Feb. 10 or 12, 2018. But flights from cities in the middle of the U.S. are usually higher—for example, Austin during roughly the same timeframe and for the same duration were about $ 1,080.

“Travelers should keep in mind that most flights are going to take over 12 hours so make sure that you book your hotels and transportation to account for time zone changes,” Wainner says.

Before booking your flight, check what time it’s set to land both in South Korea, as well as what time that would be in your home city. It could be a cheaper flight gets in at 3 a.m. your time. That’s an especially important consideration if you’re the type of traveler who doesn’t sleep well on flights. You may want to spend an extra night in Seoul to recoup and get acclimated before heading onto the Games.

Hotels

Book your 2018 Winter Olympics hotel as soon as possible, Wainner advises, noting that accommodations are limited and neighboring towns can be over an hour away by local transit.

If you’re planning to stay in Pyeongchang where the opening and closing ceremonies are taking place, the lowest rate available is $ 117 a night at the Oclaire Pension, according to Booking.com. If you’re willing to splurge, a night at the upscale Mamestar Pension—which includes an outdoor pool and free wi-fi—starts at $ 449. Some rooms even include spa bathtubs and kitchenettes.

Want to stay closer to the action? The hockey, figure skating and and speed skating events are taking place in Gangneung, about 13 miles east of Pyeongchang. The most budget friendly option in this town is at The Ocean Capsule Hotel, where a room for the night will set you back $ 269.

Getting Around

The easiest way to get from Seoul to the Olympic Games is via the newly expanded bullet train route, which reduces the travel time from 2.5 hours by car to about an hour by train. You can purchase a 7-day pass from around $ 200. That’s a good deal, considering a one-way ticket from Boston to New York during peak times can cost around $ 120.

Once you’re at the Olympic venues, you’ll be able to use spectator shuttle buses. Connecting the cities of Jinbu, Hoenggye and Gangneung, ticket holders may use spectator shuttles on the day of the event. The buses are scheduled to start running the day before the Opening Ceremony and operate through the last day of sporting events.

Meals

While you may end up grabbing a snack or a quick meal at one of the venues before or after an event, there are other dining options. Generally, meals at inexpensive restaurants are about $ 6, while a 3-course meal at a mid-range restaurant is about $ 18 per person, according to cost estimate site Numbeo. The Team USA friends and family guidebook recommends checking out the Gyo-Dong region (near Wonju University) in Gangneung, which is a quick cab ride from the Olympic Park. Here you’ll find small restaurants and coffee shops.

In Pyeongchang, there are several well-known restaurants worth checking out, according to MyBucketlistevents.com. The 30-year-old Paldo Myeon Ga restaurant offers meals for around $ 10, including broiled eels and spicy stir-fried chicken. The slightly more expensive Youngchun Garden is also recommended. Try their famous stewed chicken dish using traditional medicinal herbs for around $ 18.

Currency Exchange Rates

The South Korean currency is the won (pronounced wʌn). Currently a U.S. dollar is worth about 1,110 won, but the spending power of the dollar against the won has been on a steady decline over the past year. Expect that trend to continue into the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“Exchange your currency early at your local bank,” Wainner says. And make sure you do this in advance, as your local bank may have to special order won, which could take up to a week. If you wait and exchange your currency at the airport you could be paying an exchange fee, whereas many banks in the U.S. don’t charge their customers a fee for this service.

Whether you go as Cher Horowitz, Dionne, or Tai, the classic ’90s flick provides ample fashion inspiration—and the outfits are relatively easy to re-create at home (bonus points if you grab a friend or two and go as a group). All you need is plenty of coordinating plaid, knee socks, shiny Mary Janes, and an attitude that says “we’re friends because we know what it’s like for people to be jealous of us.” Alternatively, grab a red minidress (no Alaïa required), a slightly OTT white feather boa, and an old flip phone, and you’re ready for a party in the Valley.

13 Halloween trees Jack Skellington would approve of

13 Halloween trees Jack Skellington would approve of

13 Halloween trees Jack Skellington would approve of

“Oh Halloween tree, oh Halloween tree, how lovely are your dead black branches and bone ornaments and — oh my gosh, is that blood?” Halloween is coming up quick, ghouls and ghosts. Have you decorated your Halloween tree yet?

If you’re wondering what in tarnation a Halloween tree even is, it’s simply a piece of decor that combines the best of both Halloween and Christmas, something our good friend Jack Skellington is all about. They’re spooky and strange. They’re downright hair-raising — and they’re the coolest piece of Halloween decor you can put in your house this season.

There’s only 46 days until Halloween and you do want Santa Claws to come to your house this year, right? You better get cracking on that tree, then!

1. The Scared Silly Tree

As Pinterest user, Iris Gonyea, said, this tree is perfect for those “that prefer a silly Halloween to a scary one.” And we’re all about those silly skeletons.

2. The Addams Family Spiderweb Tree

A simple, primitive way to spook up any corner and show a little sparse tree some love.

3. The Candy Corn Tree

DIY your own candy corn tree by purchasing a faux white tree along with orange and yellow spray paint. Diligently spray your orange and yellow tree sections, let dry, and decorate with all the Halloween-y things you have on hand.

4. The Haunted Candelabra Tree

If you’re looking to DIY an eerie centerpiece for your Halloween candlelit dinner, this wire tree is the way to go. Begin wrapping wire around a rock base and build up from there. Don’t give up — remember, patience is a virtue, child!

5. The Nightmare Before Christmas Tree

Obviously Jack Skellington would love this tree because he and his friends are featured in it. But on the flip-side, Jack probably wouldn’t be too happy with Oogie Boogie taking center stage (like he’s always wont to do…ugh!).

6. A Tree to Go Batty Over

Make your own haunted tree by tying a few dead sticks together at the base and propping the bundle up between a few sturdy pumpkins. The silhouetted bat ornaments that Kristen Whitbey added to her tree are the perfect chilling touch.

7. The Spooky Silhouette Tree

By using a faux white tree lit with white lights, any ornaments you hang will be silhouetted. Darken the room, plug in your tree, and watch the shadows come alive.

8. Black and Orange Everything Tree

This room is literally what we think heaven must look like. When can we move in?

9. The Bone-Chiller Tree

Skeletons, skulls, witches, and that truly terrifying crescent moon skull at the top make this tree the ultimate mashup of all of our favorite fears.

13. The Alfred Hitchcock Tree

Hitchcock would love this avian-themed tree. It looks like these guys are taking a quite rest before shooting their next scene in The Birds.

Make The Nightmare Before Christmas a reality in your house this year with a crafty Halloween tree. The presents underneath may be a bit unsavory, but hey, at least the tree looks great.

Barbara Corcoran on Her Handsy DWTS Debut: ‘If I Wanted to Grab Any Other Spot, I Would Certainly Have Better Aim’

One of the most surprising moments from Monday’s Dancing With the Stars premiere was when Shark Tank star Barbara Corcoran grabbed onto her partner Keo Mostepe’s (very) upper thigh while she got her feedback from the judges.

But on Wednesday, Corcoran said that wasn’t what she meant to do — nor does she think it was really her fault.

“Of course, much ado about nothing,” Corcoran, 68, told PEOPLE at the Season 9 premiere event panel at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. “If I wanted to grab any other spot, I would certainly have better aim.”

“No, I was reaching for Keo’s hand, actually groping for his hand, because I was scared to death about what the judges were going to say,” she continued. “It was just poorly filmed.”

Unfortunately for Corcoran, she had a reason to be scared.

She and Mostepe got kicked off the season 25 of DWTS by receiving the lowest score of the night: a 14.

“Yeah, did you notice how I scored well?” Corcoran joked.

Asked whether her Shark Tank costars Mark Cuban and Robert Herjavec, who had both appeared on DWTS in the pastgave her any advice, Corcoran said, “of course.”

“Well, Robert said, ‘Make sure you pick out a good dance partner, because chances are you will marry them,’ ” Corcoran said. “And that is exactly what my intention is, although I am married, but I will cover that detail soon.”

Herjavec, 55, appeared on season 20 of DWTS and went on to marry his partner Kym Johnson in 2016.

PEOPLE’s special issue 25 Seasons of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is on stands now.

But on a serious note, Corcoran added that “the advice I got from Mark was that was the hardest thing he had ever done in his life.”

Funnily enough, Cuban, 59, who appeared on season 5 of DWTS, also had Johnson, 39, as a partner.

“There is something about Mark that makes you think that nothing is hard for him, he seems to breeze through everything, and I should have believed him and not said ‘yes,’ because this is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life,” she continued. “This is really a confidence crisis for me.”

“I am shocked at how weak I am,” she added. “I thought I was very good at pressure, but I’m not very good.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.

How exactly would Meghan Markle define her relationship with…

How exactly would Meghan Markle define her relationship with Prince Harry? “We’re two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception,” she says. “Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

Appeals Court Tosses Two More Would Be Heirs To Prince Estate

The Minnesota Court of Appeals has ruled that two descendants of a former security chief at Paisley Park who Prince reportedly regarded as a brother are not entitled to any part of the Purple One’s estate.

A three-judge panel on Monday said a lower court ruled correctly when it excluded Brianna Nelson and her niece, Victoria Nelson, as heirs, according to Page Six. They’re the daughter and granddaughter, respectively, of the late Duane Nelson Sr.

While they’ve acknowledged Duane was not a biological relative of Prince, who died without a will, they claimed Prince’s father raised Duane as his son anyway.

The Minnesota Supreme Court rejected five other would-be Prince heirs last week. Darcell Gresham Johnston, Loya Janel Wilson, Loyal James Gresham III, Orrine Gresham and Venita Jackson Leverette had all claimed that Nelson wasn’t really Prince’s father. They claimed they were Prince’s half-siblings through other men.

The five were not allowed to undergo genetic testing to try to prove it. Carver County District Judge Kevin Eide ruled earlier that John L. Nelson and Mattie Shaw were legally presumed to be Prince’s parents since they were married when he was born.

The appeals panel used the Supreme Court’s analysis of Minnesota parentage law in finding that Brianna and Victoria Nelson are not entitled to inherit from Prince’s estate either.
