Max Scherzer 17th pitcher since 1900 to strike out 300 in season

WASHINGTON — Chalk up another milestone for Max Scherzer. The Washington Nationals ace recorded his 300th strikeout of the season Tuesday night. The landmark whiff came in the top of the seventh inning, when Scherzer got Miami Marlins rookie Austin Dean swinging on a 3-2 slider for the second out. Prior to ringing up Dean on the 10th pitch of the at-bat, Scherzer threw four consecutive fastballs, each of which the Miami left fielder fouled off. After every offering, the boisterous fans at Nationals Park, which included Scherzer’s wife, Erica, grew louder and louder, chanting, "Let’s go, Max!" When Dean finally struck out, Scherzer smacked his glove in excitement and waved as the crowd of 26,483 gave him a prolonged standing ovation. "I definitely wanted to do it here at home," said Scherzer, who’s on schedule to make his final start Sunday, when Washington wraps up the season in Colorado. "The fans, unbelievable support. How to Watch the ‘Sunday Night Football’ Patriots vs. Lions Football Game Online for Free

The New England Patriots will take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Sunday Night Football game is scheduled to kick off at 8:20 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on NBC.

But there are alternatives for those who want to tune in without cable.

As Money has previously reported in detail, fans can stream NFL games live on their phones for free this season, using the Yahoo Sports app and the NFL App. But there’s a catch: These apps only allow viewers to stream games live if they are watching on their phone, not on TV. Sometimes, viewers are required to stream games using data, not Wi-Fi, which could cost you depending on your phone plan.

While not every NFL game is available for streaming on those apps, primetime Sunday Night Football games are — including the Patriots vs. Lions matchup tonight.

For fans looking to catch the game on television for free, one option is a free trial of a TV streaming service, such as Fubo TV, Hulu Live, DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV or YouTube TV — all of which offer some NFL games, depending on the channels they serve.

The Patriots vs. Lions game will be broadcast on NBC, and it should be possible to watch the game on any streaming service that carries NBC.

Padma Lakshmi Reveals Her Sexual Assault Story – It Was “Excruciating”

In an op-ed written for the New York Times, Padma Lakshmi revealed her story of sexual assault which she experienced at the age of 16. The host of Top Chef explained in her short essay why she chose not to speak to the police.

In the piece, she suggested her readers would want to know whether or not she had been drinking or not, or if she had been “ambiguous” about her desires.

However, the reality star explained, none of the aforementioned details are important. Her essay echoed sentiments often made by feminists and assault survivors, who charge that society “blames the victim,” by suggesting women’s clothing, behavior, or choice of language played a role in their victimization.

Padma said that she and her 23-year-old boyfriend at the time went to several parties together, and she was tired, so she laid in the bed and fell asleep.

She woke to find her boyfriend on top of her, raping her. He explained his actions as an attempt to not have her experience any pain during her first time having intercourse.

Padma pleaded for him not to do it, and “the pain was excruciating;” her “tears felt like fear.” He said to her following the rape, “I thought it would hurt less if you were asleep.”

According to the Top Chef host, she had absorbed “certain lessons” of the time, but only recently came to understand that what had happened to her was, in fact, rape.

Additionally, she spoke of being assaulted by her step-father’s relative when she was 7-years-old. When she informed her parents, they sent her to live in India with her grandparents. Lakshmi, in the closing remarks of her article, urged for survivors to tell their stories of sexual assault, so “codes of silence” don’t permit men to abuse women with “impunity.”

AT&T Exec: We Don’t ‘Spend a Lot of Energy’ on Justice Department Appeal of Time Warner Merger

The Department of Justice may be waging war to roll back AT&T and Time Warner’s $ 85 billion merger, but for the CEO in charge of the lion’s share of AT&T’s revenue, the bite seems to register as a tickle.

“We don’t spend a lot of energy right now [on the DoJ], we’re focused on integration,” John Donovan, CEO of AT&T’s division that includes entertainment and business said at Fortune’s Brainstorm Reinvent conference in Chicago on Tuesday. “That’s a lawyer activity at this point in the appeal process, so we’re moving ahead and making it work.”

The deal between AT&T and Time Warner closed earlier this year after a federal judge rejected efforts to block the deal based on antitrust concerns. At the time, the acquisition was dubbed a “landmark” case for setting the tone for future mega media mergers.

But the DoJ appealed the approval in July, arguing that such a consolidation could raise prices for consumers while stifling competition. At the time, Washington, DC federal Judge Richard Leon, who had ruled in favor of the the merger, said such an appeal could delay the integration.

In response, AT&T in a filing last week said that the antitrust regulators had yet to prove that the merger would jack up prices. In fact, the filing argued that DirecTV customers could see fees fall by at least $ 78 million annually as a result of the combination.

“The deal is closed, the government hasn’t given up yet,” Donovan said Tuesday.

Instead, AT&T is focusing its energies on other threats, such as the competition for dominance in 5G, a forthcoming cellular network that’s expected to boost online communication speed. But it’s a welcome fight.

“When you get a new battleground, that when a company gears itself up, and says: ‘This is motivating.’”

The appeal comes as the media industry quickly consolidates. Disney and Fox are awaiting approval by international regulators for their $ 71.3 billion proposed merger.

Explore Your City and Write About it to Win This $1K Scholarship

Going to college is equally exciting and challenging, especially when you throw moving to a new city into the mix.

Have you taken in the local flavors and culture of your new surroundings? Or maybe you haven’t moved, but have you looked at your home city with a new perspective?

The folks over at the Branson Travel Office in Missouri want you to share that experience for a chance to win a $ 1,000 scholarship.

Branson Travel Office Local Adventures Scholarship Details

Eligibility

The scholarship open to all domestic, international and undocumented undergraduate students enrolled — or due to be enrolled — at an accredited college or university as a full-time student.

There’s no minimum GPA requirement to apply.

Pretty sweet so far, huh?

Ok, but then there’s this…

Essay and Proof of Enrollment

All applicants must write a 1,000 to 1,500 word essay about the city they’re studying in.

Your essay should answer the following questions:

  • Since starting your studies, how have your explored your new environment?
  • If you are studying locally, how has your view of your city changed since starting college?
  • How can being engaged in a city’s conversation promote a sense of community?
  • How do you find local entertainment?

Along with the essay, you must submit proof of your enrollment. This could be a transcript, letter of acceptance or a tuition receipt.

There’s only one entry per student per year, and the scholarship does not automatically renew.

How to Apply

Once you have your essay and proof of enrollment, fill out The Travel Office Local Adventure Scholarship Submission Form.

This includes your contact information and info for the university you’re attending, as it will receive the scholarship check.

You’ll have to accept the basic terms and conditions, which say that The Branson Travel Office can use your name, essay and contest-related information on its website and in its communications.

Don’t procrastinate on this one; the deadline to apply is Oct. 15, 2018.

A panel of judges from the Travel Office will select a winner. The winner will be notified by Oct. 30.

A Recent Closet Edit

I edit and review my closet every month because I like to know exactly what I have in my wardrobe, how it all works together, and how I feel about the items as my style evolves. Monthly closet reviews sound excessive, but this is my line of work so I’m extra motivated, engaged and organized about what is removed and added, and why I’ve made those decisions. I also like to keep my moderate wardrobe at about 150 pieces (for a four-season climate) because that’s the magical number for my wants and needs.

For context, I keep EVERYTHING apart from outerwear and wardrobe basics in a small walk-in wardrobe that I share with hubby, Greg. I keep coats in a separate coat closet, and basics and yoga wear in a chest of drawers. I don’t separate or swap out the seasons, although I do rearrange items within the closet space so that seasonal items are easily on hand.

I typically don’t pass on many items at a time, because I edit very frequently. If I did, there would be nothing left. But my last edit was substantial because I finally let go of many items I’d been holding on to for too long. As requested, I’m sharing the items and the reasons they exited my wardrobe.

Footwear

I couldn’t bear parting with my eleven-year tan knee-high slouchy Prada boots until now because I bought them with Greg in Milan. But they’re very battered and the soles are worn through, I wore them that much. My cognac Prada boots are my most worn boots of all time. I’ve had them spruced up and fixed multiple times, and it’s time to retire the incredible workhorses. The colour-blocked wedges were bought in Tokyo six years ago, and are in pristine condition, but too high now that I wear flats almost exclusively. The seven-year Donald Pliner boots are too heavy and chunky for my current style preferences. The floral pumps are immaculate, but too high. The silver pumps and oxfords are battered, and I’m not into silver anymore. The pink sneakers are worn through.

Handbags

The first three clutches have been around for years, worn till the cows come home, and are now awfully battered. The green snakeskin clutch was a sentimental item that no longer makes me happy, so it had to go. The silver clutch is in pristine condition, but I’m over silver and focussing on gold. The old radio clutch is adorable but is too small for my gigantic phone. The gold satchel is a glorious shade of gold and in good nick, but the multiple pockets were driving me batty, making me feel utterly disorganized and messy.

Bottoms

I hung on to the very old tomato red skirt skirt for years, because it’s the most perfect shade of tomato red. For years I would try it on, but take it right it off because although it looked good and fit well, I’m so over classic pencil skirts. I don’t like the way they feel and this one looks too short. The old black flared skirt is lovely, flirty and fun, but also feels too short. It’s a pity that the red and orange pants had to go because they pilled, and the orange ones stretch out terribly. The burgundy pants also stretch out too much after a day’s wear. The red lace pants are a year old and gorgeous. But I’ve learned the hard way that I’m awfully uncomfortable in a high-rise elastic waist. It rides up my hips and causes crotch discomfort. Lesson learned.

Tops

The first very old pullovers pilled, but lasted quite a while. The purple pullover was immaculate and about ten years old. I hung on to it because the quality was sensational. But it doesn’t layer well under anything. I demoted it to at home only, but in the end the colour didn’t make me happy. The oatmeal multi-media pullover ripped. The peach pullover got scratchier and scratchier on the neckline. The floral pullover was immaculate, but too grey despite the pretty blue flowers. The old navy shirt had a great run, but had started to fade. The old navy and black pullover stretched on the neckline and didn’t look sufficiently polished anymore. And the gorgeous old navy open-weave turtleneck has sleeves that won’t stay put when they scrunch. They used to, but over the years, the sleeves have lost their elasticity.

Dresses

I passed on these dresses because I don’t want to showcase my knees anymore, not even with hosiery. Some dresses I wore over cropped straights and flares as tunics, which was fun and covered. But their time has passed too. Most of these dresses are either old or very old, apart from the burgundy dress which is from last season.

Toppers

The old blush leather jacket was worn into the ground and stained permanently on the sleeves. The twelve-year-old black satin moto was one of my most worn jackets ever. It fit and travelled like a dream, but had ripped, pilled and worn through. The old tuxedo jacket was looking shabby. The old black moto coat — although in pristine condition which is why I held on to it for years — feels too hard-edged, black and tough for my style. I tried to soften it, but now more than ever it’s wrong for the “pretty, dainty & soft” integrity I like to showcase in my outfits.

Items have been passed on in several ways. Some went to friends, some to clothing drop-off points, and many to the Seattle Dress for Success.

Going forward, there are items I want to replace like the red and orange pairs of pants, some toppers, and the knitwear. I’d love to find a pair of knee-high tan boots too. All in good time.

What is a Harvest Moon You Ask? “On average, the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day. But when a full moon happens close to an autumn equinox, the moon rises closer to the time of sunset. For mid-temperate latitudes, it rises only about 30 to 35 minutes later daily for several days before and after the full Harvest moon”. –earthsky.org

For higher northern latitudes, there is usually less time between successive moonrises.

“The difference between 50 minutes and 35 minutes might not seem like much. But it means that, in the nights after a full Harvest Moon, you’ll see the moon ascending in the east relatively soon after sunset. The moon will rise during or near twilight on these nights, making it seem as if there are several full moons – for a few nights in a row – around the time of the Harvest Moon.”

Gifted Seven-Year-Old Goes Viral for Demonstrating How the National Anthem Is Done

The national anthem of the United States is not an easy song to perform—unless you’re a seven-year old with an incredible talent.

Before the L.A. Galaxy faced off against the Seattle Sounders, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, a 7-year-old singer, stepped onto the grass at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles. She proceeded to belt out “The Star-Spangled Banner” in front of a packed crowd of Major League Soccer fans, like it was the easiest thing in the world.

The performance was so remarkable that not only did the L.A. Galaxy describe it as “one of the best national anthem performances in StubHub Center[‘s] history,” but she managed to get soccer superstar Zlatan Ibrahimović to cheer for her.

According to the MLS website, the small but mighty singer had to fight for her chance to sing the anthem, entering the soccer team’s #GalaxySocial Day Instagram Anthem contest where she resoundingly beat “many other applicants for the right to sing the anthem.” Her victory must have inspired the team, the Galaxy beat the Sounders 3 to 0 in the match.

The One Cryptocurrency That Is Not For Me

XRP is the third largest cryptocurrency by market cap. It is a digital coin created by tech company Ripple. Ripple actively courts the traditional banking infrastructure for its use–something that helps make this particular cryptocurrency highly controversial.

For “oldcoiners” like me, Ripple is crypto-heresy because it works with banks. Bitcoin was born of the Great Recession–created in 2009 as a virtual middle finger to the bailout of big banks. In fact, most cryptocurrencies were built upon the ideas of decentralization (no one company owns it), transparency (transactions viewable to all), and privacy – pretty much the antithesis of, and freedom from, the banks.

Ripple/XRP is popular, but I think undeservedly.

Some backstory: I used to own XRP. After having interviewed crypto enthusiast and banker Patwin Lawrence, I bought my first cache of XRP at $ 0.23 last fall. At the time, it felt like an underreported edge; as a professionally trained poker player, I am nothing if not a habitual edge-seeker. Like most, I watched XRP go absolutely bonkers, touching all-time highs of $ 3.59 in January 2018, before gradually selling my coins for an average of $ 0.96 by early April.

But in the time since I was actively invested in Ripple, the culture around it has changed. It has mutated into a full-blown cult. These heretics truly believe in the centralized banking future through crypto instead of the existential threat banks seem to think it to be. After a pattern of habitual, consequence-free abuse by Big Banking, why on Earth would anyone in crypto be rooting for these mustachioed villains to import their dirty tricks to a world created in violent opposition of them?

Despite the cryptocurrency’s 80%-plus fall from grace, Ripple fans are quick to spam Twitter timelines, Facebook groups, or Reddit threads with boundless, bot-like certainty for its future. There’s an exhaustive, forensic-grade expose of an XRP Twitter botnet “simply being used to create the illusion that…XRP/Ripple Army is larger than reality.” Every new rumor or banking affiliation with Ripple, the company, sets these XRP lemmings afire. And, yes, this is a bad thing.

Relentlessly working over social media timelines with baseless price predictions to brainwash hearts and minds and other mindless propaganda does the cryptocurrency space no favors.

All us crypto OGs craved in 2013 was attention and adoption. Now, we have reached the point where we need to discern the type of attention and adoption when it comes to digital coins and their platforms. Until the price and utility of XRP matches the unbridled enthusiasm of its social media militia – which may be never – XRP is not for me.

The 5 best island based movies that will make you want to travel the world

There are certain things we just love about movies – the storylines, the actors and actresses, the props, the special effects, and the locations. Because movies don’t make our lives seem pretty average enough (jokes, they do really), they then have to add some incredible locations to the mix. Many of our favorite movies take place on luscious islands that make us want to crawl through the television screens and sunbathe on their golden sand. Can someone make that happen? Please?

50 First Dates

50 First Dates follows the incredible love story between Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, and his pursuit to win her over. But there’s one problem – Drew’s character has no short-term memory, and forgets who he is each day! We love this story, but we also love the backdrop. This film was primarily filmed on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. These locations included Wahiawa, Kaneohe, Waimanalo, Makapu’u and Kaneo’ohe Bay. And they really are beautiful. With luscious green surroundings, aquamarine water, and impressive peaks, we really, really want to take a trip to Hawaii (and make a volcano out of waffles, of course).

Pirates of the Caribbean

Okay, so Pirates of the Caribbean isn’t exactly the happy-go-lucky franchise we know and love from most other island movies (although it probably could be if they drank a bit more rum). However, despite all of the fighting, the gunshots, the mutants, sea creatures and the robbery, there are some incredible backdrops throughout the five movies that make us want to sit on a beach, drink a few Pina Coladas and sunbathe. But you’ll definitely need to pack a few outfit changes if you want to see these islands, as the movies were filmed at multiple locations – including Tortuga, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Molokai, Dominica, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the Bahamas. That’ll do.

Dr. No

We all love a good 007 movie – and James Bond does always seem to travel to exotic places. Which means we can too, right? You know, for research purposes? The 1962 movie follows the life of James Bond as he travels to Jamaica to solve the mystery of a fellow spy agent. And of course, that means he gets a good ol’ look-see at what Jamaica has to offer. With the palm trees, sandy beaches, powder blue ensembles and some pretty small bikinis, it seems like he had a pretty good time…

Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat is a little slice of heaven – just not for Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jean Reno, Kali Hawk, Faizon Love, Kristin Davis or Malin Akerman. When a luxury holiday goes wrong, it’s hard to appreciate the incredible scenery that Bora Bora has to offer. But we could. So we’d happily take a trip to the islands of Bora Bora, stay in a sea cabin, and enjoy the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort. You know, if we have to.

The Beach

We’re always going to watch anything with Leonardo DiCaprio in it. That’s just a given. But when a movie has Leonardo in it, AND some incredible island scenery in the background – well, let’s just say we’re in for a treat. This 2000 movie was based on the Alex Garland novel of the same name and is set on the picturesque Koh Phi Phi island in Thailand. Although some of the scenery in The Beach was digitally added post-filming, we’d still love to check it out and see what it really has to offer. Because it looks right up our street (not really, it’s actually quite far away).

In his visuals to “Morning Mourning” Style PeNiro narrates the story of an attempted murder gone wrong when an innocent child gets caught in the middle. An all too familiar situation when it comes to gun violence in the US.

Doris Kearns Goodwin: What We Need in a President Is Not What We’ve Got

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

The midterm elections are on November 6, and—like it or not—the presidential election will start on November 7. Republicans will almost certainly re-nominate Donald Trump (if he’s still in office), but Democrats will have a long list of potential nominees who will spend 2019 and into 2020 hiring staff, raising money, and debating each other in way too many cable-news beauty pageants.

Debates tell us very little about what kind of president a person would be, so let’s just skip them.

“When Tim Russert was still alive, he and I talked in 2008 about wishing we had a different way to talk about presidential campaigns than who won a debate or who has raised the most money,” says historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. “We should look at their leadership as governors or mayors or congressmen and see whether they had a strong team, whether they acknowledged errors, whether they controlled their behavior. Temperament is key, and I wish we had known more about that before the 2016 election.”

So Cute! 7-Year-Old Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja Wows the Crowd With Her Rendition of the National Anthem at the LA Galaxy Soccer Match [Video]

A 7-year-old Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja belted out the national anthem before Sunday’s match between the LA Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders and she sang her little heart out!

There’s not much for us to say — but take a look at the video below!

For those wondering where such a tiny tot got such big pipes, her father Arman Tjandrawidjaja told All the Moms that she’s been taking singing lessons since the age of 3.

“She’s been singing forever. Basically before she could speak. Always singing,” he said, adding that she sings in the shower or while doing homework without even knowing it. “Sometimes we have to tell her to be quiet.”

So cute!

Ask an Expert: Backlit Bathroom Mirrors

Why should I choose a backlit mirror for my bathroom?

A backlit mirror is both a stylish and functional choice for a modern bathroom! The backlit mirror eliminates the need for sconces or vanity lights, giving you a more streamlined look that becomes a dramatic focal point while still providing a nice, ambient secondary light source.

Backlit mirrors use long lasting LED light strips that are very energy efficient and offer even lighting with no unflattering shadows which is great when applying makeup as well. Additional features, like heating pads that prevent fogging or options like dimmable lights and bluetooth speakers can also add extra functionality for a luxurious touch! – Michelle Dixon, www.modernbathrooms.ca

6 Gas Rewards Programs to Try if Fuel Prices Are Draining Your Savings

Grocery store loyalty programs used to be the way to go to save money on gas, but now that gas stations are offering their own fuel rewards programs, times are changing.

And because gas prices are the highest they’ve been since 2014, you’ll want to save every penny you can while you’re filling up that tank.

6 of the Best Gas Station Rewards Programs

So if you’re on the hunt for cheap gas, check out this list of the best gas station rewards programs, plus some bonus tips for using free gas apps to save even more.

1. BP Driver Rewards

BP gas station logo is pictured
Chris Zuppa/The Penny Hoarder

BP Driver Rewards offers 10 cents off per gallon for every $ 100 you spend on fuel purchases of up to 20 gallons. So if you have a 10-gallon tank, you’ll save $ 1 for every $ 100 you spend on gas.

If you’re a frequent flyer, you can earn 2 MileagePlus miles per gallon if you purchase regular or midgrade fuel, or 3 miles per gallon if you use premium-grade fuel.

You’ll also receive 200 bonus miles after you link a debit or credit card and make your first transaction. If you don’t use your miles, you can use them toward fuel purchases — 60 MileagePlus miles equals 50 cents off per gallon on up to 20 gallons, for a maximum of $ 10 off per fill-up.

To find participating stations, search your ZIP code in the station finder and filter by “BP Driver Rewards,” or download the BPme app for Android and iPhone.

To pay using the app, simply open the app and select your pump number — your location should automatically be recognized as long as you have enabled location settings for the app.

2. Exxon Mobil Rewards+

After parting ways with Plenti, Exxon Mobil launched its own rewards program — Exxon Mobil Rewards+.

This points-based system awards 3 points per gallon on fuel purchases, plus 2 points for every $ 1 you spend on car washes and convenience store items. The program also offers a sign-up bonus of 100 points and 15 points per gallon for the first 30 days.

Members can redeem points on fuel, car washes and store items, with every 100 points equaling up to $ 1 off. Let’s say you have a 10-gallon tank and are earning 3 points per gallon. That means you’ll only have to fill up a little over three times to earn enough points for $ 1 off fuel and other purchases — not too shabby. Combine that with any points you earn on car washes and in-store items, and you have an even better deal.

You can also keep track of your rewards in the Exxon Mobil Speedpass+ app for Android and iPhone. You’ll need to register an account for the app separate from your Exxon Mobil Rewards+ account. You can then link your rewards account via your rewards card or phone number.

The Speedpass+ app also allows you to search for nearby Exxon and Mobil stations and pay for gas right from your phone using Samsung Pay or Apple Pay.

3. Maverik’s Adventure Club

Located in several states across the Northwest, Maverik is another gas station offering its own fuel rewards program: Maverik’s Adventure Club. This program offers two rewards cards: the Adventure Club card and the Adventure Club Nitro card.

The Adventure Club card offers 2 cents off per gallon on fuel purchases. Card holders can also earn Trail Points through fuel and in-store purchases, excluding gift cards, lotto tickets, tobacco products and alcohol. You can use Trail Points to buy store items or win prizes in weekly drawings. And if you stop by Maverik on a Tuesday, you’ll earn triple points for Triple Trail Point Tuesday.

The Adventure Club Nitro card offers all of the same benefits and a little bit more, including 6 cents off per gallon, double Trail Points from purchases, price matching and $ 1 fountain drinks and refills — that includes the 64-ounce drinks.

The main difference between the cards is the Adventure Club Nitro card must be linked to your checking account, and you must pay using the card to save on fuel and earn points.

Track your Adventure Club rewards by logging in to the website or through the free app for Android and iPhone.

4. Pilot Flying J

While Pilot Flying J’s rewards program was built with professional and RV drivers in mind, all PIlot Flying J customers ages 18 and older are eligible to join the myRewards program with the Preferred Customer Rewards card.

With the Preferred Customer Rewards membership, you can save 3 cents for every gallon of fuel purchased and earn points for in-store purchases. You’ll also gain access to the Coffee Club, which awards a free cup of coffee after every ninth coffee purchase, and you can enjoy a free dessert during your birthday month.

You can manage your rewards using the myPilot app. You can start the pump and pay right through the app — and if there’s a line, the app has a feature that shows you which pump is most likely to open up next.

The app also allows you to track your receipts, find fuel prices and search for local places to eat, plus, it gives you exclusive offers.

5. Shell Fuel Rewards

Streaks of light are captured by a long camera exposure
Chris Zuppa/The Penny Hoarder

I’ve been using Shell Fuel Rewards for the last few months, and at the very least, I save a few cents per gallon every time I fill up. On one fill-up, I saved 18 cents per gallon.

Shell Fuel Rewards has two tiers: Silver Status, which saves 3 cents per gallon on fuel purchases and Gold Status, which saves you 5 cents per gallon.

To reach Gold Status, you only need to fill up six times within three months. And if you purchase at least eight gallons four times within 30 days, you’ll receive 10 cents off per gallon on your fifth fill-up.

Shell Fuel Rewards offers additional savings that can be stacked on to your status, including 25 cents off per gallon for referrals, 25 cents off per gallon for shopping and 10 cents off per gallon for dining. You can earn additional savings for booking flights, hotels and rental cars through Fuel Rewards offers.

So let’s say you earn Gold status, then another 25 cents off per gallon for shopping online and another 10 cents off for dining out. That means you’ll get a total of 40 cents off per gallon on your next fill-up of up to 20 gallons. If you stack on a referral, that’s a total of 65 cents off per gallon.

You can also earn more through featured offers and card-linked offers.

You must opt in to the link-and-save feature. Just be warned that card-linked and featured offers can take up to seven business days to process.

6. Speedway Speedy Rewards

Just like Shell’s program, Speedway Speedy Rewards is packed with a ton of ways to save, and it comes with a free mobile app to keep track of it all.

With Speedy Rewards, you’ll earn 10 points per gallon at the pump and 20 points per dollar spent in-store, plus bonus points on select items. You can also earn reward points for shopping online through the Speedy Rewards Mall.

And if you want to use points for free stuff, a minimum of 1,000 points gets you free drinks and snacks, while 5,500 points can get you a whole large pizza.

You can earn even more free stuff when you become part of the Speedy Club. All you have to do is purchase one item from the club, and you’re in!

With the Speedy Club, if you frequent the car wash, you can earn a free wash for every sixth you purchase. And if you’re all about the coffee, fountain drinks and Speedy Freezes, you can be part of the Beverage Club — which allows you to choose a reward for every six beverages you buy. This could be a free beverage, 1,000 bonus points or 10 cents off fuel.

You can also choose between four monthly perks. Current options include 200 bonus points with the purchase of 10 gallons of gas, 100 points per day with the purchase of king-size candy bars, 100 points per day with the purchase of sports drinks or 100 points per day with the purchase of energy drinks.

As an added perk for using the Speedy Rewards Pay Card, you’ll earn double points each time you purchase fuel, plus you’ll save 5 cents per gallon on all fuel purchases for the first 90 days. In certain states, you’ll earn 70 bonus points per gallon of fuel purchased for the first 90 days instead of 5 cents.

Bonus: Save Even More on Fuel With These Free Gas Apps

If you’re into saving even more money on gas, there are a couple of free apps you can use in combination with your preferred gas station rewards program.

1. GetUpside

GetUpside is a free mobile app for iPhone and Android that offers fuel rewards in the form of cash back. Coverage areas are currently limited to Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Long Island, New York, and Florida.

The app provides a map of the nearest gas stations and lowest fuel prices, along with an offer to earn cash back. Gas prices are updated in real time; however, because prices are always changing, the amount listed in the app may not always be accurate. If you find an inaccurate price listing, you can update the prices through the app.

To accept a cash back offer, you simply hit “claim,” then pay with your usual debit or credit card. Make sure you get a receipt, because you will need to snap a photo to upload in the app to receive your cash back, which takes 24 to 48 hours to process. You can choose to transfer the funds to your PayPal account or receive a check by mail.

GetUpside cash-back offers can be used in combination with other discounts, coupons and loyalty programs, and there is no limit to how much you can earn. Just keep in mind cash back offers may be reduced when you use them with other loyalty programs. I’ve been using GetUpside for a little over two weeks and already have earned $ 5.25.

P.S. If you live in the D.C. area, you can also use the app to earn up to 15% cash back on groceries and 35% cash back on dining.

2. GasBuddy

Chris Zuppa/The Penny Hoarder

GasBuddy is a free app that helps drivers find the cheapest gas prices across a database of more than 140,000 gas stations and convenience stores in the United States, Canada and Australia. In 2017, GasBuddy added a new feature to help drivers save on gas called Pay with GasBuddy.

Pay with GasBuddy can be used at the pump and is linked to your checking account. The card is currently accepted at most gas stations except for Exxon and Mobil stations, BJ’s, Costco, Sam’s Club, HEB, and select Walmart and ARCO stations.

During account setup, you’ll be asked to choose between receiving 10 cents off per gallon for your first fill-up and 5 cents off per gallon thereafter, or receiving cash back in the form of Shop Your Way points, which can be redeemed for discounts at participating retailers.

Once setup is complete, your Pay with GasBuddy card will be issued by mail.

It can take a few days for the transaction to process. I used my card on July 24, and the transaction didn’t show up in my bank account until July 27.

For more information about the GasBuddy app and the Pay with GasBuddy card, visit the GasBuddy Help Center.

Stepfathers’ ‘Cinderella effect’ challenged by new study

Long-held assumptions that stepfathers are far more likely to be responsible for child deaths than genetic parents have now been challenged. Findings suggest that differences in rates of child homicides by stepfathers and genetic fathers are considerably smaller than previous researchers have claimed, and that the relative ages of fathers implicated in these crimes is more significant than whether they are the biological father of the child.

How to Watch the ‘Monday Night Football’ Steelers vs. Buccaneers Game Online for Free Tonight

Attention NFL fans: You can live stream the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game for free tonight on “Monday Night Football” even if you don’t have cable TV.

Yes, the Steelers vs. Buccaneers game tonight is being broadcast by ESPN — a pay channel, available on TV only if you’re a subscriber to a satellite or cable TV package.

But new services from a pair of mobile apps make it possible to live stream NFL games on your phone during the 2018 season totally for free, without requiring any pay TV provider account info. You can’t live stream every NFL game this way, and you can’t use either app to stream games on a TV, but the new services do make it possible to watch “Monday Night Football” online for free.

Also, several live streaming TV services will also allow you to watch the game online for free tonight, by way of free trial periods for new subscribers.

Here are all the details you need to watch the Steelers vs. Bucs “Monday Night Football” game for free tonight.

When Does the Steelers vs. Buccaneers Game Start?

Kickoff for the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET tonight (Monday, September 24).

The Steelers have yet to win a game in 2018 (they are 0-1-1), while the Bucs are undefeated, after surprising wins over the New Orleans Saints and Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the season’s first two weeks. If you’re interested in the betting odds for “Monday Night Football,” most sports books have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as slight favorites to beat the Steelers tonight.

How to Live Stream the Steelers vs. Buccaneers Game for Free

For the first time this year, the new capabilities of two apps allow you to live stream many NFL games on your phone for free. Both the NFL App and the Yahoo Sports app let you watch the following games online: You can live stream all the games being broadcast locally in your area on Fox and CBS on Sunday afternoons, and you can live stream nationally televised primetime games, including ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” and Fox and the NFL Network’s “Thursday Night Football.”

As we reported earlier, there are some restrictions for using the NFL App or Yahoo Sports app to live stream “Monday Night Football” and other games. Namely:

• You can’t watch an app’s live stream on your TV. This is one of the biggest sources of confusion regarding the NFL App and Yahoo Sports apps’ new capabilities. You can use the apps for free streaming to your phone (and in some cases, a tablet), but they cannot be used to screencast games to a TV. So if you were hoping to use an app to cast the game to your 65-inch TV, you’re out of luck.

• You might have to use data, not wifi. Some fans who have been trying to use the apps to live stream NFL games have complained that they were prompted to log in with a pay TV provider account, and that they were instructed to turn off wifi and use their cellular data. What gives?

For the apps to function properly, you must download the latest version. If you have an older version, you may be asked for a pay TV log-in. And while you can live stream most of the games available on the NFL App or Yahoo Sports app while connected to wifi, it seems there are some games that can only be streamed if wifi is turned off. Specifically, it appears as if the “Thursday Night Football” games airing exclusively on the NFL Network can be live streamed with either app only if you’re using data, not wifi. Obviously, that data use has the potential to make “free” streaming a bit more costly, depending on your wireless plan.

How to Watch “Monday Night Football” for Free on TV

Even if you have a big phone, watching sports (and football especially) on that tiny screen is hardly the optimal viewing experience. If you want to watch the “Monday Night Football” Steelers vs. Bucs game tonight on a larger screen, consider signing up for a free trial of a streaming TV service that’ll let you watch online for free tonight on any connected screen you like.

Streaming TV services such as Hulu Live, DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, and YouTube TV all have packages that include ESPN, and they all offer five- to seven-day free trials for new subscribers. To watch the Steelers-Buccaneers game for free then, simply register for one of these services and use it to stream the game on a laptop, tablet, TV, or any other preferred screen.

Just remember that if you don’t want to become a paying subscriber, you must cancel the service before the trial period ends. Packages start at $ 25 to $ 45 per month, depending on the provider and channels included.

Also, note that not all streaming TV services include ESPN in packages. The most notable is Fubo TV. Fubo TV’s focus is entirely on sports, but it does not include ESPN, so you can use it for watching “Monday Night Football.”

New York City – the Big Apple. We all want a bite of it, right? But more often than not, a trip to New York will cost you more than your average vacation, and depending on where you are in the world; the flights can get pretty pricey. Not to mention how expensive hotels can be! But there are ways to spend less during your trip to New York (which means you can spend more in the shops) as there are hundreds of free activities in and around the city. Bonus.

Central Park

When you think of New York City, you probably think of the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, Times Square and of course, Central Park. Central Park is not famous just because of THAT scene in the Friends intro (which we all obsess over), but this park is full to the brim of history, culture, and fun. And the best part? It’s completely free! The park was originally opened in the 1860s to boost the Manhattan housing prices, but nobody expected it would be as popular as it is today. Spanning over 2.5 miles long, Central Park is full of lakes, bridges, walkways, green spaces and more. On a daily basis, the park is teeming with street performers, food stalls, and some of the most incredible artwork – including the Alice in Wonderland statue, and the John Lennon ‘Imagine’ mosaic.

New York Public Library

If you love books, poems and writing, then you’ll love New York’s Public Library. This century-old building is located on the outskirts of Times Square – and you won’t be able to miss it. Flanked by incredible marble lions (called ‘Fortitude’ and ‘Patience’) this dramatic structure is unlike any other building you’ve ever seen before. But it doesn’t stop there. The inside of the building houses the most amazing reading room, full to the brim with layers upon layers of books, reading desks and traditional reading lamps. Don’t worry if you don’t like reading though, this library also houses some of the most historical American exhibits – including a Gutenberg Bible, an original copy of the Declaration of Independence and over 400,000 maps.

Staten Island ferry

One of the main attractions of any trip to New York City is the Statue of Liberty – but if you’re on a budget, getting up close and personal to the green lady can seem impossible as many ferry tours start from around $ 15 each. However, you don’t have to get on a Statue of Liberty tour to see it properly! The Staten Island Ferry runs through the New York Harbor ferrying Staten Island residents across the water to their home, and is completely free! So rather than shelling out for a tour, hop on the ferry, take in the sights and the Statue of Liberty and then head on back to the city.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, more commonly referred to the Met, is known across the world as an iconic building in New York history, as well as an incredible museum for art. This building offers everything you could possibly want from an art gallery, with collections of multiple eras – including Roman, Byzantine, African, Egyptian, and Greek, as well as modern artwork. The gallery also features the work of some of the most prolific artists in history, including Pablo Picasso, Vermeer, Vincent Van Gogh and Rembrandt. As if this wasn’t enough, the Met also houses artifacts like costumes, weapons, musical instruments and more. But if you’re not that interested in art, then you might just want to visit the Met to sit on the steps and follow in the footsteps of the Upper East Side Queen, Blair Waldorf…

Times Square

If you want to visit Times Square, you’re going to want to take your sunglasses. Known to many as the Crossroads of the World, Times Square is one of the brightest, biggest and busiest places across the globe. Times Square is the home to Broadway, as well as intense adverts, screens, and music. And of course, the yellow New York cab. The best time to visit Times Square is on New Year’s’ Eve, where you can hang around the square to watch the iconic ‘ball drop’ which signifies the start of a new year. And it’s all free! That’s what we like to hear.
