The best places to see the Northern Lights

Have you heard or read about the Northern Lights? The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are one of the greatest shows displayed by Mother Nature. They occur when there is a collision between solar particles and gases in the atmosphere. They may last for a few minutes or even several days. Many people dream of viewing this incredible spectacle, and choose a vacation destination for this purpose. Does this sound like you?

Check out some of the best places to see the Northern Lights below.

1. Fairbanks, Alaska

This is one of the best places from which you can view the Northern Lights. The dark nights, clear skies, and cold weather offer you ideal aurora viewing conditions.

If you are worried about the cold temperatures, you can view the lights near the steaming hot springs. You can often see the aurora from anywhere in Alaska. However, the best viewing site is at Fairbanks which is located in the “auroral oval”.

The Northern Lights are available for your viewing pleasure throughout the year. However, the best time is during the winter months.

2. Reykjavik, Iceland

This is one of the cheapest and most accessible sites for you to view the Northern Lights. However, you may need to leave the cities to get dark skies. This offers you a clear, uninterrupted view.

There are many Northern Lights tours available. You can opt for a tour in a four-wheel drive vehicle or a boat cruise, from which you can admire the Aurora, in all its glory.

3. Canada

Most of Canada falls under the “auroral oval”. However, you will be guaranteed the best Northern Lights view in the sparsely populated province of Yukon. There is virtually no light pollution in this area, thus offering you a fantastic view of the lights.

To avoid the harsh winter conditions, it would be best if you go during the autumn season. You can also try visiting during the March equinox. During this time, there is an increase in solar activity and this will give you an unforgettable view of the lights.

4. Norway

This is one of the most magical places you can check out the Northern Lights. Norway is a comfortable place to view them, and you can choose from a variety of aurora viewing options. It is also quite easy for you to get around this beautiful country.

The best place to view the aurora is Tromso. Other places you can try out include Harstad and the Lofoten Islands. An ideal time to visit would be between October and March.

5. Finland

From September to March, the lights shine almost every other night in Finland. You can view the aurora from just about anywhere, so long as you are away from the cities. However, be warned as, during these months, it can get quite cold.

You can even opt to view the lights from a glass igloo as you keep warm in bed.

The Northern Lights are a sight to behold. If you get the chance, you can visit any one of these places to see this amazing natural spectacle.

So go on ahead and plan that well-deserved vacation. Make a point of visiting the best places to see the Northern Lights.

Fighting perinatal mood and anxiety disorders on multiple levels

Over the past several decades, it’s become increasingly recognized that perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), including postpartum depression, are more than just “baby blues.” They’re the most common complication of childbirth in the U.S., affecting about 14 percent of women in their lifetimes and up to 50 percent in some specific populations. PMADs can lead to a variety of adverse outcomes for both mothers and their babies, including poor breastfeeding rates, poor maternal-infant bonding, lower infant immunization rates and maternal suicides that account for up to 20 percent of postpartum deaths.

Avoid Hidden Costs During a Roof Replacement

From curb appeal to increased energy efficiency, a roof replacement is a smart way to drastically increase the value of your home. However, roof repairs can also be some of the most expensive renovations for homeowners. So how do you ensure that your roof replacement stays in budget, and avoid hidden costs that could break the bank? Knowledge is key. Read on for Modernize’s advice to help you prepare for unexpected costs during your roofing project.

Basic Costs of a Roof Replacement

Begin by determining your baseline roof replacement budget. The average roof replacement cost is between $ 8,000 – $ 17,500 including installation, the cost of roofing shingles, removal of your old roof, disposal fees, permitting and labor.

Whether you are budgeting for a DIY replacement or accepting bids from roofing contractors, the cost of your project will be impacted by basic roofing considerations like:

Roof Dimensions

In short, the simpler the roof, the cheaper the replacement. The complexity, slope, and size of your roof will have a significant impact on the cost of your roof replacement.

Roofs (and roof repairs) are measured in squares, which are 10×10 foot areas. The more squares to be replaced, the higher the cost. Roofs with more slant have a larger surface area than roofs with less slant. And a roof with more level changes, hips, valleys and add-ons like dormers will be more expensive than a simple roof.

Roofing Materials

Roofing material prices range from very affordable options like asphalt ($ 150 to $ 550 per square) to options like slate (close to $ 385 to $ 800 per square). As such, the cost of raw materials will drive the price of the entire roofing project up or down.

In addition to shingles, building materials are another cost to consider. This includes, but is not limited to, boards and plywood, nails, drop cloths, calk, roof underlayment, flashing, and sheathing.

Labor

Labor costs will vary depending on the size of the crew, their experience, and the scope of your roofing project. However, Modernize encourages homeowners to not select a contractor based on price alone. The quality of work is especially important when it comes to roofing projects.

While some aspects of a roof replacement can be DIY, the smartest choice for such an important project is to partner with a reputable roofing contractor. The right roofing contractor will be able to help you set (and stick) to your roof replacement budget and have the experience to foresee any hidden costs.

Disposal

While it is often possible to install new roofing over existing shingles, that can impact the quality of your roof and interfere with your roofing warranty. As such, your roof replacement will likely entail the disposal of your current roof. Shingles must be disposed of properly, so budget for a dumpster and additional disposal costs.

Inspection and Permitting

To determine the scope of your roof replacement, your roofing contractor will do an inspection of your current roof. Inspections are generally not free, but a roofing contractor may include the cost of their inspection in the price of a repair project after being hired. After an inspection, your contractor will be able to provide a more accurate quote and scope of work.

Depending on where you live, your contractor may also need to secure permits to complete a roof replacement. Your contractor will manage the permitting process, but be prepared for the cost. Depending on your region, a roof replacement permit may be a flat rate, or it could vary based on your home’s size or value.

The Most Common Hidden Roof Replacement Costs

No matter how well prepared and researched your roof replacement budget may be, keep in mind that construction may uncover additional costs that are beyond you or your contractor’s control. Especially if you live in an older house, it’s wise to be prepared. With that in mind, some common unexpected costs to be prepared for include:

Bringing Your Roof Up To Code

Your roof may have originally been built to meet decades-old building codes that will no longer apply to new construction. While this is great news for your home’s energy efficiency and sustainability, it is an added expense to keep in mind.

Pests and Mold

Especially in humid areas of the country, mold and termite damage can add hidden costs to your roof replacement. Whether it’s insects or decay, these problems will need to be addressed before new shingles can be installed.

Leaks And Rotten Plywood

Leaks in your roof can sometimes go unnoticed until the shingles are removed during a roofing repair. These leaks can cause damage to your home, like rot in rafters and other wood structures. If there is already extensive damage, the material and labor cost to replace that wood can quickly increase the roof replacement price by hundreds of dollars.

Poor Roof Design Causing Water Traps

Water traps are a common issue that homeowners are often unaware of until a roof replacement takes place. Water traps are areas that are prone to leaks due to runoff areas that direct too much water to one place. Water traps also lead to faster wear on your shingles and other materials like siding or brick. If your contractor uncovers this issue, you can expect to include the costs to mitigate the water traps in your roof replacement budget.

Upgrades

For many homeowners, a roof replacement is a smart choice to increase the value of their home. In that vein, you may find that upgrades to other elements of your roof are also in order during the roof replacement. Examples include upgrading to low-maintenance gutters, improving your roofing ventilation, or opting for a more durable type of roof underlayment. Discuss how these and other options can be worked into your roofing repair with your contractor. They can help you decide what makes sense to maximize the value of your home while staying within budget.

Tips To Keep Your Roof Replacement On Budget

Like any home renovation, there are ways you can prepare your home to minimize additional costs that can occur during the actual installation. Tips include:

  • Cut your grass short before roof installation begins. Shorter grass will make it easier for your roofers to use a magnetic nail finder to recover any nails or staples that go astray during a roof replacement.
  • Cover items in your attic with a tarp or plastic sheeting. Small gaps in your decking can allow shingles, nails and other debris to fall onto your insulation or valuables stored in your attic.
  • Where possible, move plants and lawn furniture far away from your home. This also applies to vehicles parked in your driveway. Relocating valuable items will minimize the chance of them being damaged while your roofing team hauls loads of debris over the side of your roof.

Now that you have the knowledge of the costs, both planned and unplanned, to expect during your roof replacement, all that’s left is to ensure you stick to your budget. To do that, you can:

  • Complete your roof replacement in the off-season. Demand for roof repairs is greatest in spring and summer, so the cost will typically be higher than when done in the cooler months when laborers’ time is in less demand. The price of new shingles can also be lower during the off-season.
  • Leave 15-20 percent of wiggle room in your budget. This will allow you to take any hidden issues in stride without impacting the rest of your roof replacement. This may seem like a large buffer, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
  • Establish great communication with your contractor. Let them know about your budget constraints up front. This will help them determine the most realistic way to reach your desired end result, and help them as they purchase supplies for the project.

All in all, having a reliable and honest roofing contractor is perhaps the easiest way to avoid hidden costs during a roof replacement. Take advantage of Modernize’s tools to find a trusted local contractor that can make the roof of your dreams a reality.

‘This Is Much Bigger Than Basketball.’ NBA’s Enes Kanter Opens Up About Being Wanted by Turkey

New York Knicks center Enes Kanter is the only NBA player who, in the eyes of the government of his home country, is an international fugitive.

Prosecutors from Turkey have sought a warrant for Kanter’s arrest, and are seeking his extradition from the United States. Kanter’s a vocal critic of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan; he supports Fethullah Gulen, the cleric living in exile in Pennsylvania, whom the Turkish government believes was behind an attempted 2016 coup to overthrow Erdogan. Turkey has accused Kanter of being part of terrorist group, and revoked his passport in 2017.

Right before going to his suburban New York apartment to watch his teammates take on the Washington Wizards in London Thursday — Kanter skipped the game, which the Wizards won 101-100, because he feared assassination while overseas— the 26-year-old talked to TIME about fear, death threats, and messages for both his enemies and family back home.

[The conversation has been condensed and slightly edited for clarity]

Do you feel like a fugitive right now?

It’s weird. I put out on Twitter that the only thing I terrorize is the rim. People know me, my teammates know me, everybody knows me. That’s why when the government puts a statement out there and says, ‘Oh, he’s a terrorist,’ my teammates laugh actually. They literally laugh. All my friends were laughing. They’re like ‘What is this? This is ridiculous. If they call you a terrorist, they’re crazy.’

Are you scared?

They put my name on Interpol on the red notice. So if I step outside of America, my life will be in danger. But I feel safe in America.

So you can walk around freely here? You’re not in hiding?

Our team security said, even if you go to a supermarket, have someone with you. So everywhere I go — grocery shopping, practice, go to games, go to plays — I always have someone with me because you never know, a lone wolf, one of the crazy Erdogan supporters will do something. The only place I go alone is the bathroom. Just the bathroom.

If you get extradited, what do you think will happen to you?

Ooof. It will be very ugly, man. I don’t know if they can kill me, because there will be so much pressure on him. But there have been lots of reports out there that they torture people in jails. So they will definitely torture me very, very bad.

What kind of torture would you expect?

Ugh. I have no idea. But I know that after that torture, I will not be able to play basketball again.

What’s your main criticism of Erdogan?

Erdogan is an authoritarian leader who jails journalists and the opposition. He’s an anti-American leader who keeps American citizens as hostages, like Mr. Brunson, the pastor. Erdogan violates human rights. About 17,000 innocent women, and around 700 babies have been kept in jail with no due process. So he uses his power to abuse human rights. If you look at it right now, Turkey is the number one country in the world for putting the most journalists into jail, after the coup attempt. That shows there’s no freedom of speech in Turkey. Don’t get me wrong, I love my country, I love my flag, I love my people. Turkey could be the bridge between modern Islam and the West. But now that all this stuff is happening in Turkey, that’s impossible.

What’s your message to Erdogan?

I would just tell him to stop. Stop abusing innocent people. Stop abusing all journalists. Stop abusing women and babies. He’s killing the county. There is no democracy in the country right now. There is no freedom of speech. I cannot even invite my teammates to Turkey because they’re scared. Turkey was a peaceful county, Turkey was a lovely county. But because of all the things that are happening right now, I mean … look at my family. I cannot even bring my family to America, because they are not letting them leave the country.

Leave the innocent people alone. Not just my family. People know my story because I play in the NBA. There are thousands and thousands of stories out there way worse waiting to be heard. Please, please. Not just me and my family. Leave all the innocent people alone.

Another former NBA player, Hedo Turkoglu, is now a chief adviser to Erdogan. He’s criticized you on Twitter. What’s your message to him?

I called him a lapdog because he has to follow every comment that Erdogan gives him. We were really good friends back in 2011. We played on the same national team. All the stuff that’s going on right now, he cannot really talk freely because of his fear of President Erdogan. He’s losing so many fans, so many friends in America because of what he’s doing.

In an op-ed you wrote for the Washington Post, why did you cite Colin Kaepernick as an inspiration?

He basically sacrificed a lot of things to talk about issues. If you’re an athlete —not just an athlete, actors, singers — you need to talk about these kinds of issues, because you have that big platform. And millions and millions of fans are following you. So what he did was definitely amazing.

What is this costing you?

My family. [Eds note: Kanter’s father, mother, and sister remain in Turkey. His father faces criminal charges for connections to an alleged terrorist group]. That’s the most important thing. Because the last time I saw my family was 2015. Sometimes I even forget what they look like, you know? It’s so hard to communicate with them. Because Turkish police raided my house. They took electronics away, computers away. They wanted to see if I’m still in contact with my family or not. Any single text, they will all be in jail.

Does it disappoint you that Erdogan and President Trump seem to have a good relationship?

I don’t really know what’s happening behind the doors to be honest with you. They can tweet or they can say whatever they want, but I don’t really know what’s happening behind the curtains. That’s why I wish I could meet with Trump and talk about all these issues. Talk about all the abuses that Erdogan is doing to human rights.

Have you reached out to Trump?

I want to reach out to him. I don’t know how. If you put this out there, maybe he will read it and we’ll get a meeting with him.

Have you been getting more death threats in recent days?

I used to get death threats at least once or twice a week. Now, because of all this, the last three or four days, I’ve been probably getting hundreds and hundreds a day. I don’t count. Our Knicks security guy told me to take a screenshot of them, send them to us. It got to the point where there were so many of them. I’m like, ‘You know what, I’m not going to even bother doing it.’

Are you numb to them by now, or do they still cause concern?

I’m 6’11, around 245 pounds. But those are death threats man, you have to take them seriously. One of the crazy Erdogan supporters might come and do something and you cannot control it. The government cannot control a lone wolf. It’s scary.

Where are you going to watch the Knicks-Wizards game?

I’m actually going to watch it in my apartment. I’m going to put my jersey on. Because I want to feel like I’m still part of the team. I go there and look at their Instagram stories. I’m still in a group chat. When they say, ‘We’re going to the mall, we’re going to eat, who wants to go to dinner tonight,’ it’s breaking my heart..

What impact is your uncertain basketball status — your playing time is down as the Knicks try to develop younger players — having on all of this?

It is very stressful. Trade rumors, I don’t know whether or not I’m going to go, the team, the minutes, everything. But right now my first job is to take care of this. Because this is much bigger than basketball. Or my future in NBA.

Looking back on how this situation has escalated, would you have done anything differently?

I will just say this: I have a platform and I’m using this platform. And I’m trying to be the voice of all those innocent people who don’t have a voice. So don’t call me crazy. I don’t regret anything. I wish I could have done more.

Any message for your family back in Turkey?

Oh man. If I could say one thing to them, I would tell them, ‘I love you.’ And I would say ‘Mom, I miss your food.’

Sammi Giancola Planning On Returning To ‘Jersey Shore?’ – She’s Still Close With The Female Cast Members!

It turns out that Sammi Giancola is still pretty close with her former female Jersey Shore co-stars even though she refused to be part of the reboot. Is she considering a return nowadays?

The answer’s pretty clear as far as she’s concerned!

Sammi is not planning on coming back in Jersey Shore despite how close she still is with the rest of the female cast.

As fans know, she and Ronnie Ortiz-Magro dated for no less than five years, and their drama as a couple was pretty much a big part of the show.

That being said, the audience mostly rooted for them to make it work but in the end, they still broke up.

Sammi would not take him back, even if she were single, and similarly, she would never return as a cast member on Jersey Shore either.

One source shared with HollywoodLife that ‘Sammi wants nothing to do with Jersey Shore anymore other than the friendships she has built with her co-stars over the years. She’s extremely close with all of the females, especially Nicole (Polizzi) and Jenni (Farley). However, Sammi enjoys her private life off camera and has no interest whatsoever in returning to TV.’

Amid Ronnie’s terrible legal drama with baby mama Jen Harley, Sammi is very happy and in love with her significant other, Christian Biscardi.

They have been together since 2017, and he often appears on her social media platforms. He treats her like a queen, and their romance is just goals!

Last summer, he commented on a selfie of theirs that ‘I will always be the worst looking person in every picture we take and I am okay with it.’

In response, she wrote: ‘You’re my better half.’ So sweet!

The insider added that she really likes having a normal life now and she would not give up her privacy to be on the show again.

How a dangerous piece of Android malware snuck into the Google Play store

Android Malware

Security researchers from Trend Micro recently unearthed a piece of Android malware known as Anibus that managed to sneak into the Google Play Store with a little bit of creativity. The malware in question was found on two separate apps, though neither of them were widely downloaded.

The way the apps managed to get on the Google Play Store is actually quite clever. In an effort to evade detection from emulators designed to detect behavior associated with malware, the malicious apps were uploaded to the Google Play Store but remained dormant unless motion was detected. Once motion was detected, the payload would spring into action.

Nick Knowles ‘struggled’ to eat for 5 days following I’m A Celeb stint

OHMYGOSSIP — Nick Knowles “struggled” to eat for five days when he returned from the ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ jungle.
The 56-year-old TV presenter finished sixth on the ITV series, and now the star has revealed that his body went into a five-day fast and was in “super-shock” because it was “terrified” of having to ration food again.
Speaking on ‘This Morning’, Nick said: “[I lost] 14-and-a-half kilos in 20 days. I lost a kilo a day.
“It was very, very intense, and I have to say of all the stuff I’ve ever done, that was the most difficult.
“But weirdly the stuff that wears you out is the stuff you don’t really see on the programme.
“It’s going backwards and forwards, up the huge long flight of stairs to get the water and the logs. You can’t sit around and lose almost a kilo a day.
“I really struggled [to eat] for about five days, and then I went into super-shock and I then ate and ate and ate, and put pounds back on – it’s like my body is terrified it’s going to happen again.
“We have a WhatsApp group with all the guys together and we’re texting each other at four in the morning saying ‘Someone stop me eating!’ ”
Nick also confessed that the ‘I’m A Celeb’ production team would go to any lengths to “get under” the celebrities’ “skin”, however, it made their bond together stronger.
He added: “We said, ‘They’re going to do anything they can to get under our skin, so if we get tighter the tougher it gets for them.’
“They try to get you under your skin – they make you tired, they make you hungry, it’s us versus them.
“You set yourself up, it’s not us versus the production team but if you get into that mind-set you bond together.”

Love at First Sight

On a recent business trip, I had a chance to stop in at Fifth & Fir in Vancouver. This boutique tile destination offers a wide selection of gorgeous, designer tile options. I fell in love with this Oxford Blue pattern from the Mosaique Surface Dominion collection. I am a fan of Herringbone and Chevron patterns. Oxford Blue offers a modern feel to a traditional look with an offset pattern in Calacatta Oro, Gold Glass and Pacifica Blue! I would love to see this used as a feature wall behind a freestanding tub or as a backsplash in a stunning, dramatic kitchen with dark cabinets and marble countertops. – Oxford Blue, Fifth and Fir, www.fifthandfir.com

Delicate Details

The Chantilly Chest is a stunning blend of modern technology and historical design. Francesco Giampietro, principal designer at Chestnut Grove, had a whimsical idea to create a chest of drawers designed to hold lingerie. It evokes the same sensual feeling that its content evokes in an elegant and tasteful manner. It’s shape is inspired by the female form. After a year of experimentation in the design studio, the finished piece brings the visual and tactile appeal of lace in a delicate wood pattern that feels like lace to the touch. – Chantilly Chest, Chestnut Grove Design Studio, www.chestnutgrove.ca

Artistic Beauty

I first saw this bench by craftsman Randy Mugford on display at a design show and it immediately caught my attention! The maple tree stretching through the charcoal concrete panel is the stunning, unexpected detail that I love most. Custom-made in a variety of colors and wood species, the wood plank slides back and forth on a metal rail making it adjustable to fit a variety of spaces! – One Tree Bench, Randy Mugford, www.65design.ca

Kitchen Art

I love this Le Château double oven in a gorgeous deep blue enamel with a mix of gold and stainless steel details. Not only does it offer exceptional cooking but the stunning visual style of the piece becomes like artwork in the kitchen! – The Château 150, La Cornue, www.lacornue.com

Contemporary Flexibility

I love the contemporary feel of the Migliore sectional in a tan brown leather. The set is made of three unique pieces which can be put together in a variety of combinations to expand, reduce or reassemble as needed. The Migliore sectional is also available as part of a wall bed combination. – Migliori, Expand Furniture, www.expandfurniture.com

You’ll Soon Be Able To Buy Bitcoin at the Grocery Store

Bitcoin might not be the red hot commodity it was a year ago, but it’s taking its biggest step yet toward the mainstream world.

Coinstar, whose machines are found in supermarkets across the country and help people get rid of their spare change, has announced plans to let people convert cash into Bitcoin.

“Coinstar is always looking for new ways to offer value to our consumers when they visit our kiosks, and Coinme’s innovative delivery mechanism along with Coinstar’s flexible platform makes it possible for consumers to easily purchase Bitcoin with cash,” said Jim Gaherity, Coinstar CEO, in a statement.

Don’t count on using spare quarters, dimes and pennies in this case, though. Bitcoin via Coinstar can only be purchased with paper money (as much as $ 2,500). Investors will go to one of the company’s participating machines and select the “Buy Bitcoin” option on the screen, entering their phone number.

After inserting however much they want to spend, they’ll receive a voucher with a redemption code, which they can enter on a Coinstar operated Website.

Coinstar has 20,000 machines around the world and has become the de facto place for people to get rid of their jugs of spare change. It’s not clear right now how many of those will sell Bitcoin, however.

Bitcoin could use the boost. After seeing prices crash most of last year, the cryptocurrency is currently selling for about $ 3,600, well off of its December 2017 highs of $ 19,783. Supporters are hoping for a rebound this year.

A Star-Studded Soccer Game Was Saudi Arabia’s Latest Attempt to ‘Sportswash’ Rights Abuses. It Didn’t Work

A headed goal from soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo propelled Juventus to 1–0 victory over rivals AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana (Italian Super Cup) Wednesday, but the reluctance of the sport’s top players and clubs to speak out against Saudi Arabia’s human rights abuses has prompted accusations they are complicit in ‘sportswashing’ for the Gulf state.

The game took place at Saudi Arabia’s 62,000-capacity King Abdullah Stadium, where a fan-zone featured mock gondoliers and Venetian bridges, soccer stars posed for pre-match photos in traditional Saudi headdresses and fans in the bleachers held aloft cardboard cutouts of the Kingdom’s ruling monarchs. But back in Italy, state broadcaster RAI’s journalists union accused Italy’s elite Serie A league of helping gloss over Riyadh’s strict gender segregation laws, the brutal war in Yemen, and crackdowns on dissident voices – including the brutal murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

The $ 8 million that Saudi Arabia is paying for the right to hold each of three Supercoppa games it is scheduled to host over the next five years constitutes “the price of silence in the face of bombs which have been massacring civilians in Yemen for four years, in the face of the enlistment of child soldiers, in the face of the brutal murder [of Khashoggi],” RAI’s journalist union said in a statement issued a couple of days before kickoff. Highlighting the presence of male-only sections in the stadium and the incarceration of women activists, RAI’s union’s accused those involved of being accomplices to delivering “un calcio ai diritti umani” (a kick against human rights).

Read more: Women in Saudi Arabia Can Finally Attend Live Soccer Matches

Serie A’s deal with Riyadh drew scant public opposition when it was announced last June. The Italian season’s traditional opener—now scheduled during its mid-winter break—had in the past been played in the U.S., China, Qatar and Libya. Its temporary home in Saudi Arabia was confirmed the same month reforms overseen by de-facto leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salmon (nicknamed MSB) permitted women in the Kingdom to drive, and a year after they were allowed to attend live soccer games in stadiums for the first time.

But Khashoggi’s murder in Istanbul last year—which U.S. Senators say was ordered by the crown prince—largely put an end to Bin Salman’ efforts to cast himself as a reformer. The high-profile flight of Saudi teenager Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun this month prompted fresh scrutiny of the country’s male-dominated guardianship system, which curbs women’s ability to make critical decisions about their lives.

In addition to RAI’s and other unions staging a protest outside Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Rome, Wednesday’s match also drew criticism from Italian politicians and Amnesty international, who in October urged Juventus and A.C. Milan to pull out of the game.

“International sports events have become an established public diplomacy tool for Gulf countries to enhance their global stature and to deflect attention from political controversies and human rights abuses,” says Lina Khatib, head of the Middle East and North Africa program at London-based policy institute Chatham House. “But sometimes this strategy has backfired, instead drawing attention to issues the countries would like to sweep under the carpet.”

Read more: ‘Rahaf Is Going to Start a Revolution.’ Saudi Women Are Demanding Reforms After a Teen Fled the Country in Fear for Her Life

Italy’s top league is only the latest organization to be accused of assisting a Gulf state’s “sportswashing.” Soccer’s international governing body FIFA has failed to hold the Qatari government to account over what Human Rights Watch estimates could be more than 2,000 unexplained deaths of outdoor workers since FIFA awarded Qatar the right to host the 2022 World Cup, writes researcher Nicholas McGeehan. McGeehan has also criticized German club Bayern Munich for keeping quiet over human rights abuses allegedly perpetrated by its sponsor Qatar Airways.

Such organizations are “so hungry for cash and the Gulf States are so happy to hand it out at every turn that they have not been allies in trying to use sport as a tool for positive change or reform,” McGeehan tells TIME. It’s a damning indictment of organizations that frequently tout their commitment to fair play and inclusivity. But, McGeehan says, the game’s stars are “probably among the most powerful actors” to affect change.

In a statement Serie A president Gaetano Micciche said the league was working to ensure women would be able to access all areas of the stadium’s seats for subsequent Supercoppa fixtures. But analysts say the negligible criticism from soccer’s luminaries illustrates how Saudi Arabia is so far withstanding public pressure, bolstered by international business and political interests overriding concern for human rights.

“Football is part of the Italian economic and cultural system, and can’t have logic, especially in international relations, different from those of the country to which it belongs,” Micciche said in a statement defending the decision to proceed with the match. “Saudi Arabia is the largest Italian commercial partner in the Middle East thanks to dozens of important Italian companies that export and operate there, with many of our compatriots working Saudi Arabia, and none of these relations have been disrupted.”

Issa Rae, Kumail Nanjiani, to Star in Romantic Comedy ‘The Lovebirds’

Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani are coming together to star in The Lovebirds, a romantic comedy.

via THR:

Michael Showalter, who directed Nanjiani in the surprise hit The Big Sick, is reteaming with the actor and will be sitting in the helmer’s seat when the fast-tracked project goes into production at the end of January.

Written by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall as well as Martin Gero, the script centers on a couple (Nanjiani and Rae) on the brink of a breakup. The pair subsequently become embroiled in a bizarre and hijinks-filled murder mystery, and as they get close to clearing their names and solving the case, the twosome need to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

Tom Lassally, Oly Obst, Todd Shulman, Jordana Mollick and Gero are producing the rom-com, which is being co-produced and co-financed by MRC. (MRC is owned by Valence Media, which is the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter.)

Nanjiani, Rae and Showalter are serving as executive producers.

Nanjiani, one of the stars of the HBO comedy Silicon Valley, broke out in a big way with The Big Sick, which earned him and his co-writer wife Emily V. Gordon an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay as it became a sleeper hit in the summer of 2017. He will next be seen starring opposite Dave Bautista in Fox’s action-comedy Stuber, which is set to open July 12.

Rae is the co-creator of the HBO comedy Insecure, in which she is a triple-threat as writer, executive producer and actress. Rae, who was recently seen in the drama The Hate U Give, next stars in Little, a body-morphing comedy from Universal set to bow April 12.

This looks like it’ll be super cute! Shoutout to diversity!

The Average American Spends $798/Month on Their Car. 3 Ways to Pay Less

You love your car. It’s your ride. It fits your needs as well as your style.

But have you thought about how much you actually spend to have it? According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s report on Consumer Expenditures in 2017 (released in September of 2018), the average cost to own a vehicle — including purchase, insurance, gas and other expenditures — is $ 9,576 annually.

That’s $ 798 per month, folks.

If you spend nearly $ 800 on your monthly car expenses, you’d probably like to shave that number down a bit. You’re in luck. Use these three tips to save some of that money for the drive-thru window.

1. Get a Better Loan

When you bought your car, you probably got a loan to do it. No problem.

But you probably didn’t get the best interest rate, either. That means you’re paying more in interest that you should. That’s a problem.

With auto refinancing, the biggest hurdle is the process of re-titling your vehicle, which involves dealing with your local DMV. And, oh my god, who wants to mess with that?

Never fear — MotoRefi’s digital platform handles all that technical stuff so you don’t have to. In a matter of minutes, you could qualify for a lower monthly payment, lower interest rate or both.

MotoRefi partners with lenders — like community and regional banks — that can offer you the best rates. Once you choose a lender, MotoRefi handles all the paperwork, including the cumbersome re-titling process.

MotoRefi says it’s saving the average customer $ 100 per month or more. Checking for potential savings won’t impact your credit score.

MotoRefi is available in California, Connecticut and Michigan.

2. Kick Your Overpriced Insurance Premium to the Curb

If you have a car, you probably need insurance, right? Right. But that bill takes a big chunk out of your bank account each month.

For many, car insurance is just one of those things where we cave in and pay. Because, just like the electric bill and phone service, we need it, right?

Yes. There’s no getting around car insurance, unfortunately. But one way you could save money is by shopping around and comparing rates at least once a year. Less than 50% of us do that, according to this survey from The Zebra, though 81% of us report wanting lower rates.

So, just like you compare the prices of flights, shoes and laptops before purchasing, why not compare car insurance?

The Zebra, an online car insurance search engine that offers “insurance in black and white,” compares your options from 204 providers in less than 60 seconds.

Here’s how it works:

1. Head over to The Zebra’s search platform. Enter your car’s year, make and model, and your zip code. Continue on to answer questions about your driving habits, your car and your life.

On the right sidebar, you’ll watch rates increase or decrease based on your answers. For example, if you’ve gotten into an accident — that was your fault — in the past three years, your rates will kick up. It’s interesting to see what effect your answers might have.

2. After answering some questions, it’s time to compare. The Zebra gives you an “Insurability Score,” which is similar to your credit score except it’s for car insurance, and it  teaches you how to get better rates. The site also gives you different options for coverage.

Seriously, it only takes 60 seconds and you could save up to 50% on your premiums. If you’re paying that average of $ 118 per month, that’s $ 59 back in your pocket. Nice.

3. Pump the Brakes on High Gas Prices

If you’re a savvy saver, you probably already use GasBuddy to help you find the cheapest gas station in town. It’s an easy — and free — way to avoid overpaying.

But once you pull up to the pump, here’s something else you can do: Get a discount card from GasBuddy to automatically save 10 cents per gallon on your first purchase (and 5 cents per gallon after that).

The free discount card is tied directly to your checking account. It works at 95% of gas stations throughout the country, so you don’t have to drive around town just to find “your” station. Plus, you don’t have to wait for a rebate — it’s immediate savings.

Simply and securely sign up through GasBuddy. Connect your bank account, enter your address, and GasBuddy will put a card in the mail.

It’s time to put the pedal to the metal on your monthly car savings. Step on it!

Sources: Kamala Harris Will Launch A Presidential Campaign Around MLK Jr. Day

Sen. Kamala Harris may officially announce her bid for the White House sometime during MLK weekend, according to inside sources who spoke to KCBS Radio in her home state of California.

Speculation that the Democratic senator will make a run for president next year escalated when she launched a book tour promoting her new memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, which published Tuesday. When questioned about the 2020 race on her tour, Harris has repeatedly said that she is not ready to announce her decision yet. However, several sources with knowledge of her plans say she and her family are indeed ready for a run.

Sources also say that the 54-year-old freshman senator is still debating on how and where to kick off a presidential campaign. KCBS reports that “the tentative plan is for Harris to enter the race for the Democratic presidential nomination with a campaign rally, most likely in Oakland, where she was born and began her legal career.” However, a spokesperson for Harris told The Hill, that no announcement is imminent and Harris will not be in Oakland during the holiday weekend.

Nonetheless, Harris told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Wednesday that she will make a final decision about 2020 soon and that she truly believes the nation is ready for a woman of color to be president.

“We have to give the American people more credit, and we have to understand that the American public and the people of our country are smart people who will make decisions about who will be their leader based on who they believe is capable, who they believe has an honest desire to lead, to represent, to see them, to be a voice for them even if they have no power,” she said.

Harris made history in 2017 when she became the second African American woman to be sworn into Congress as a U.S. Senator. Altogether, a total of just 10 African Americans have ever served in the U.S. Senate, including former President Barack Obama and Sen. Cory Booker.

If Harris jumps into the 2020 race, she would likely join Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who recently announced an exploratory committee for a presidential bid. Other potential high-profile Democratic candidates include Sen. Booker, Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas).

Photo battle between the iPhone and the Pixel has a surprising winner

Pixel Vs iPhone

For as amazing as camera quality on the iPhone is today, the original iPhone camera was nothing to write home about. Equipped with nothing more than a fixed-focus 2-megapixel camera, the original iPhone delivered subpar pictures even compared to other devices at the time.

Apple, though, eventually started throwing a lot of money at camera development. Before long, it seemed that each successive iPhone routinely set a new bar for mobile camera quality that competitors simply couldn’t keep up with. That said, the mobile landscape is always changing and Apple now has some stiff competition when it comes to mobile photography. What’s more, there’s a strong case to be made that Apple these days finds itself playing catch-up when it comes to overall camera quality.

A Professional Bull Rider Died After a Bull He Was Riding Stepped on His Chest

A 25-year-old professional bull rider has died after being stomped by a bull at an event Tuesday.

Mason Lowe, of Exeter, Mo., was injured at the National Western Stock Show in Denver when a bull he had been riding stepped on his chest after he had been thrown off, a witness who was at the event told CBS4.

Lowe was immediately transported to Denver Health and died at the hospital, Professional Bull Riders (PBR) said.

“Our entire rodeo family and every member of the Stock Show community is saddened by the loss of bull rider Mason Lowe,” said Paul Andrews, National Western Stock Show President and CEO.

In a tweet, PBR CEO Sean Gleason also paid tribute, writing “We are deeply saddened to report that Mason Lowe passed away this evening following injuries sustained at the PBR event in Denver.”

Lowe had been a professional bull rider for 7 years and was ranked 20th in the world, according to the PBR.

The National Western Stock Show, which is held for 16 days every January, has been running since 1906, and is described on its website as “the premier livestock, rodeo, and horse show in the nation.” More than 650,000 people attend each year.

How to Evaluate Contractors’ HVAC Replacement Quotes

Comparing contractor quotes is an important step in the journey to save on your HVAC improvement project, whether you are replacing an air conditioner or upgrading the furnace heating your home. A recent Modernize survey revealed 63 percent of homeowners compare three to four contractor estimates ahead of a home improvement project. Evaluating multiple HVAC replacement quotes helps homeowners scope their budget and encourages contractors to be competitive with their pricing, which is especially significant when more than 75 percent of American homes use air conditioning and nearly all new homes get built with central air systems. It’s important to understand your project’s unique parameters and why quotes may differ from each other so you avoid costly mistakes in the heat of the moment.

The Difference Between HVAC Replacement Estimates and Quotes

The terminology used with your HVAC project is important. You may receive quotes, estimates, or bids from local contractors, but these contain different sets of information.

An estimate on a project is roughly how much the professional believes the job will cost. A contractor will use their past experience and expertise to make this estimate. The actual cost of the project may be more or less—within 10 to 15 percent.

HVAC replacement quotes, or bids, become contracts once they are signed. This should be a very detailed document that outlines all aspects of the project. At Modernize, we pair homeowners with contractors that offer free HVAC replacement quotes for the project.

Evaluating HVAC Replacement Quotes

Once you have received multiple quotes, it’s important to carefully consider each. Your HVAC contractor’s quote should be transparent, detailed, and even lengthy—depending on what it will take to replace or repair your HVAC unit. Every detail of the project should be noted, including the cost of materials, start and finish dates, and hourly rate. Your quote should also include factors like disposal of old systems, if applicable, or perhaps permits. Labor should also be included in your quote.

Investing in an HVAC replacement or finally facing a long-needed HVAC repair could substantially lower your utility bills. Top air conditioning systems use between 30 and 50 percent less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as A/Cs made in the mid-1970s, according to the Department of Energy. “Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20 to 40 percent of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model,” it predicts.

In recent surveys of homeowners who upgraded their HVAC systems, half told us they financed and half told us they had saved in advance. Of course, an HVAC emergency does not allow anyone the opportunity to save. If you are not already throwing quarters into a piggy bank, you might be interested in financing your project. Financing can either be self-propelled through a loan you take or it can be part of the HVAC contractor’s quote. Additionally, there are programs that will assist with financing your project, like Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE), a state-based program through which eligible homeowners can “finance energy efficiency and other eligible improvements,” according to the Energy Department. Whatever your choice, you should consider options. If one of those options is your contractor, be sure their quote includes all applicable details.

It is important to consider the numbers—as well as how they are presented. A good contractor will make sure the information is in an organized document. If your quote is not properly itemized, feel comfortable asking for a revised quote before signing a contract.

Your HVAC Replacement Quotes May Vary

It is reasonable to assume replacing an A/C unit or the system heating a home means installing a new one sized similarly to the old one, but that is not always the case. Homeowners might expect the cost for HVAC replacement to come close to its initial installation, as well, but that is also not always the case. Advances in technology, not to mention new climate norms, HVAC market changes, and manufacturers’ costs could affect the availability and quality of systems meeting your needs. In turn, this means bids can be different.

Extremely low bids can be the sign of a scam—and extremely high bids could be just as concerning. It’s important to understand why an estimate or quote is extremely high or low.

Factors that will lead to a higher bid:

  • High-end contractors will likely have more equipment and overhead.
  • HVAC replacements can vary drastically in price. These disparities could be due to the type of unit—how quiet an air conditioning system is, for example. We encourage homeowners to research the HVAC system best suited for their homes and needs.
  • HVAC systems can also vary in price depending on hardware other than the main units themselves.
  • Warranties will also impact your quoted cost. Most installers offer manufacturer’s warranties that protect you from faulty equipment. Some might offer additional guarantees for the installation as well, covering potential damage to your roof. Be sure the quoted warranty is clear in what it covers—and in what it doesn’t.
  • Research and be aware of hidden costs— like permits and potential fines. Your quote should include a proper breakdown of how local or federal regulation applies to you and what your contractor will or will not do in that regard.
  • Expect an analysis of what your bills should look like after the installation, and how you should expect these costs to change in upcoming years.
    • A SEER rating of 16 could mean saving upward of $ 400 annually, for example.

Factors that will lead to a lower bid:

  • If a contractor does not have proper insurance (or any at all), they will often provide a lower bid. This may leave the homeowner responsible for laborer injuries or damages that occur. Modernize recommends that homeowners always select a licensed contractor for their home improvement project.
  • If a contractor doesn’t have a solid grasp of local policies or applicable local, regional, and federal incentives—like the ones found at the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency, they may leave that to you and subsequently lower their fees since they have less paperwork to worry about. While a contractor may charge you for help navigating the bureaucracy of HVAC regulation, a good contractor will assure your energy compliance and maximize your return on investment utilizing expertise you may lack.
  • Extremely low bidders may also be desperate for a job, which is never a reassuring sign.

For both high and low bids, always check your HVAC replacement quotes for errors. Contractors are human and, while rare, errors can happen. Communicate any and all questions and concerns with your contractors.

Find the Right HVAC Contractor For You

Vetting your contractors will ensure you find the best, reliable, solar energy installer for your project.

Visit their website to ensure it is professional looking and updated. Check review sites and make sure they are accredited through the Better Business Bureau. Look at a contractor’s content information to make sure they have a physical address and not a P.O. Box (which can be a worrisome sign).

If something feels off about a contractor or business— go with your gut. To help homeowners easily vet and find a trusted HVAC contractor, Modernize recently created a free contractor checklist. You can access the interactive checklist by visiting the Modernize Homeowner Portal or by downloading it here.

Homeowners Can Negotiate Bids

Remember, you can always negotiate with your contractor on the price for the successful project before signing a contract. Discuss your budget with your contractors. Agree that any unexpected project expenses will be presented in writing to help you remain within your budget.

Keep All Paperwork

Lastly, keep all estimates, quotes, and contracts in a folder, so you can reference these details easily if you have any questions or concerns throughout your HVAC replacement or repair.
