Reducing care needs of teens with substance-abuse disorders

Screenings, interventions, and referrals can help adolescent teens overcome substance abuse in the short-term. Less is known about the long-term effects of those efforts. A new study from Kaiser Permanente, published in the journal Pediatrics, suggests that the benefits can last for many years and can include sustained reductions in mental health conditions.

In a new study titled “Health Care Utilization Over 3 Years After Adolescent SBIRT,” researchers led by Stacy Sterling, DrPH, MSW, of Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research in Northern California, found that adolescents with access to SBIRT — short for “screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment” — were less likely to have mental health or chronic medical conditions after 1 year.

Substance abuse is “closely associated with the top three causes of mortality and morbidity among adolescents — injuries, suicide and homicide,” write the authors. And, they note, adolescent substance use often goes hand-in-hand with other medical and mental health conditions and can lead to higher use of health care services.

In this new study, they found that those with access to SBIRT services had fewer psychiatry visits over 1 and 3 years, and fewer total outpatient visits at 3 years, leading to lower costs and utilization of health care.

“The fact that we saw a difference in substance use problems even 3 years out was surprising,” said Sterling, the study’s lead author. “It suggests that providing access to SBIRT may plant a seed for patients and their care teams, creating awareness about substance use that may help kids avoid future problems.”

The study used data from electronic health records to examine how much health care was used among adolescents with access to SBIRT services, from a randomized clinical trial that compared usual care to 2 other methods of delivering SBIRT in pediatric primary care — delivered by a pediatrician or by an embedded behavioral clinician.

The study was conducted at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, an integrated health care delivery organization. The sample was taken from the pediatrics department in Oakland, California, and consisted of 1,871 adolescents ages 12 to 18.

“We found that adolescents with access to SBIRT services, regardless of whether it was through their pediatrician or an embedded behavioral health clinician, were less likely to have mental health or chronic medical conditions after 1 year,” Sterling said. “We also found that SBIRT likely leads to lower health care utilization.”

Man Or Cyborg? ‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Passes $1 Million Mark

NEW YORK (AP) — There’s no truth to the rumor that James Holzhauer is a cyborg created to be the perfect “Jeopardy!” contestant.

But given how he’s made a level of excellence rarely seen on the television quiz show appear almost mundane, it sometimes seems that way. Holzhauer eclipsed the $ 1 million mark in winnings Tuesday on his 14th appearance. Not only has he won $ 131,127 to shatter the program’s previous one-day record of $ 77,000, he already has the top five one-day scores in the history of a game that has aired regularly since 1984.

The professional gambler from Las Vegas is quick on his feet and quick with the buzzer, displays an extraordinary breadth of knowledge and — true to his profession — is cold-blooded in his willingness to risk big sums of money.

The show’s most hallowed records, set in 2004 when Ken Jennings won 74 games in a row and earned more than $ 2.5 million, seem like a plausible goal.

“James is just a perfect ‘Jeopardy!’ machine,” Jennings told The Associated Press this week.

Like most of the game’s best players, he did his share of studying in advance, finding that books geared to young people were a good way to learn about unfamiliar topics. He built a replica of the show’s buzzer and practiced while playing along on TV, standing in his living room like he has to do now in front of a podium. Holzhauer says he rarely guesses — he doesn’t like those odds — but seems never to have forgotten a fact.

“My goal was just to be less nervous than the other players,” he said. “Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I snapped my fingers three times and pictured a fun snow festival with my daughter.”

He did have one audacious goal: to honor his daughter by winning $ 110,914 in a single episode, since her birthday was Nov. 9, 2014. He accomplished that on his fourth show.

His strategy is to begin games with the highest-value clues, hoping to quickly build winnings and land on the one “Daily Double” in the first round. When he does, he usually bets everything, punctuating it with a motion that makes it seem like he’s pushing in all his chips. If he’s wrong, there’s enough time to earn more money. But he’s rarely wrong.

The two “Daily Doubles” in the game’s second round are also coveted. He doesn’t bet everything then, but he puts a lot on the line.

Holzhauer said show host Alex Trebek once told him that he doesn’t gamble because he could win $ 1,000 and not care, but that losing $ 20 annoys him.

“I’m not surprised that most contestants don’t gamble the way I do,” he said. “Loss aversion is a very real factor.”

The Final Jeopardy round gives him one more chance to place a big bet. On the show that aired April 17, Holzhauer bet $ 60,000 on the category of 20th Century literary figures. The clue was: His first name refers to the ancient district in which you’d find the Greek capital; his surname is a bird.

He correctly answered: Who is Atticus Finch?

“Most ‘Jeopardy!’ players never think about maximizing winnings,” Jennings said. “I never did. I just wanted to survive the game and get to play again. But he’s a sports bettor. Maximizing winnings is everything to him. I wouldn’t have the stomach to bet $ 60,000 on a Final Jeopardy clue. What if you get that wrong, and you have to come back in five minutes and play another game knowing that you just blew a year’s salary on a single trivia question? Psychologically, I doubt that I could have rattled off a long streak doing that. But James just seems to be made for those dangerous plays. He’s a cool customer.”

Jennings can envision future players trying to imitate Holzhauer’s strategy of building up big winnings fast. But in a lesser player, that could be disastrous.

“I’m not sure I can really bet any more boldly than I have already,” Holzhauer said. “I can keep my foot on the accelerator, though.”

For a show with a long history, his single-day achievements beg for some perspective. Consider it this way: It’s like a young Major League baseball player hitting 95 home runs in a season (the record is 73 by Barry Bonds), then following it up with a couple of seasons in the 80s.

Holzhauer often watches with friends as his streak plays out on weekday evenings (shows are taped well in advance). “People seem to think it is really cool to watch someone on TV while you’re sitting next to them,” he said.

He hopes his celebrity stays low-key. He gets recognized in public now but said most people are respectful, save one fan “who got a little too handsy with my bicep” at a hockey game.

With his style of play, Holzhauer considers Jennings’ earnings record a more achievable goal than the 74-game winning streak. Given the show’s schedule, which includes tournaments and reruns, fans wouldn’t know until September if he approaches the standard of consecutive shows. Since the show’s ratings are already spiking, producers won’t mind if he sticks around.

“I’ve been waiting 15 years for someone to make a run at me, and it’s finally happening,” Jennings said. “The closer he gets to the cash and game records, the closer I will be watching. I’m rooting for the guy.”

Instagram Introduces “Quiz” Sticker Function to Stories

Instagram continues to develop its user interactivity and focus on engagement with the announcement of a new “Quiz” Stories feature. The sticker joins the “Poll,” “Questions” and music functions and enables users to post a fully-customizable yes/no-styled question on their Story for their followers to interact with and vote on.

Followers simply have to tap on the answer of their choice to engage with the “Quiz” feature, which is available in two or four multiple choice options. Following the recent addition of the “Close Friends” Story function, the “Quiz” mode aims to encourage friends to test how well they know each other and offer a closer relationship between large accounts and their fans.

The feature has already started rolling out on users’ apps worldwide, and will be available on both iOS and Android versions of the social media platform.

In 10 Years, Half Of Middle-Income Elders Won’t Be Able To Afford Housing, Medical Care

In 10 years, more than half of middle-income Americans age 75 or older will not be able to afford to pay for yearly assisted living rent or medical expenses, according to a study published Wednesday in Health Affairs.

The researchers used demographic and income data to project estimates of a portion of the senior population, those who will be 75 or older in 2029, with a focus on those in the middle-income range — currently $ 25,001 to $ 74,298 per year for those ages 75 to 84.

And it doesn’t look good for that group because of the rising costs of housing and health care. The researchers estimated that the number of middle-income elders in the U.S. will nearly double, growing from 7.9 million to 14.4 million by 2029. They will make up the biggest share of seniors, at 43%.

By 2029, more than half of the middle-income seniors will have annual financial resources of $ 60,000 or less, even if the equity in their homes is included. Projections put the average annual assisted living and medical expenses cost in 10 years at $ 62,000, meaning that a majority of the middle-income seniors then will not be able to afford an assisted living facility.

Middle-income seniors are a group that Beth Burnham Mace, one of the study’s authors, said has been often overlooked when policymakers and legislators think about housing and care for aging Americans.

“The low-income cohort has been taken care of by tax subsidies, while the high-income cohort is largely self-sufficient. But the middle-income seniors have been ignored,” said Mace, who is chief economist at the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care, a nonprofit research group.

The study’s authors said they are probably underestimating the extent of the looming problem. They projected out-of-pocket medical costs of only $ 5,000 a year for seniors.

Deborah Carr, chairwoman of the department of sociology at Boston University who studies aging, noted that Americans “are able to live longer today than they have in the past because of medical technology.” The downside, said Carr, who was not affiliated with the study, is “if they’re living for years with dementia or mobility issues, then they have to pay longer for medical care for the additional years they live.”

Indeed, the researchers projected that 60% of the middle-income seniors will have mobility limitations, while 20% will be considered “high needs,” meaning they have three or more chronic conditions and one or more limitations in activities of daily living, such as bathing or dressing. Eight percent will have some form of cognitive impairment.

Seniors living with mobility limitations, chronic conditions or cognitive impairment are more likely to need care and support such as that offered by an assisted living facility.

But that’s not a reality for many.

In her written response to the Health Affairs study, Jennifer Molinsky, a senior research associate at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, addressed the needs of seniors who decide to stay at home as they age instead of going to an assisted living facility. She said these older Americans face a different set of challenges.

“One of the challenges is that most people don’t live in cities,” Molinsky said in an interview. “And most houses in these areas are single-family detached homes. The infrastructure is not set up for safe walking, so you have to drive. People often give up driving as they age. So these locations can be difficult to provide services to people.”

Molinsky said other issues to consider are making homes more accessible by adding ramps for wheelchairs or wall handles in the shower and the cost of these changes.

The other dire warning of the study: While spouses and middle-age daughters have historically provided the bulk of elder care, that is a less likely option in the future because of changing marriage patterns, lower birth rates and the increasing number of adult children who live far from their parents. Some seniors will need to seek paid care.

The study suggests that policymakers could expand Medicare benefits to include access to a wider range of supportive services, or create a new benefit, “Medicare Part E,” that funds long-term care. However, other attempts to set up such a program have run into resistance among lawmakers because of cost.

While Medicaid is the primary payer of long-term nursing home care, right now the program is available only to low-income seniors. Seniors may become eligible if they impoverish themselves. However, lawmakers could also broaden the Medicaid income eligibility requirements or expand options to include home-based care for those with higher-end incomes.

Some seniors are already turning to creative solutions to address their growing need for affordable housing.

Carr said one innovative option she has seen is the Village to Village Network, a community program that allows seniors to stay in their homes but have access to general support services, such as home repairs, transportation, health care and even social activities.

Co-housing, where seniors share a residence, like in the classic TV show, “Golden Girls,” is another solution, Carr said.

Mace said she hopes the study will spark more conversation between public and private sectors for creative ideas to address the issue of housing the growing number of Americans who will turn 75 or older in the next decade.

Her advice to both those seniors and their children is to openly discuss the issue.

“It is a good idea to sit down and talk about what your plan may be,” said Mace. “Talk about what the financial assets are and the housing options. It’s a worthy topic to talk about, though it can be hard, because it helps to avoid putting both children and parents in difficult situations in the future.”

Victoria Beckham Heads to Toronto for Suzanne Rogers Event

O CANADA!: Victoria Beckham will pack her clothing trunks and head to Toronto in November as the special guest in the fifth series of Suzanne Rogers Presents events, WWD has learned. An announcement is expected Wednesday.
Beckham follows in the path of Diane von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa and Zac Posen, who have all taken part in the charity fund-raising series that Rogers started in 2010.
To date, Rogers’ events have raised more than $ 3 million for charities fighting children’s poverty and supporting a spectrum of health and education programs for young people.
The November edition will be cohosted by Rogers and the event chair, philanthropist Sylvia Mantella. The celebration will include an “intimate fashion presentation” with Beckham, followed by a seated luncheon, according to organizers.
“I am so pleased that Victoria has accepted the invitation to come to come to Toronto and deeply appreciate her personal commitment and generosity in supporting our children’s charities,” Rogers said.
Proceeds will benefit Camp Ooch, which gives children affected by childhood cancer unique opportunities for growth through special experiences, and The Penelope Neuroblastoma Foundation, which funds brain tumor research, and provides support for families affected by this type of childhood illness.

Experts Weigh-In On When To Wash It

Adam writes: I bought an overcoat in November and it’s served me well this winter. It’s probably my favorite thing in my wardrobe. Now that spring has come, it’s time to put it away until autumn. I’m writing because I’d like your advice on how often I should dry clean my coat. Is once a year sufficient? I’d like to have this coat for decades and want to make sure I don’t do anything to shorten its longevity.

The sniff test doesn’t always tell us when something needs to be cleaned. Obviously, things that come in direct contact with your body need to be laundered after each wear — shirts, underwear, and socks pick up your skin’s sweat and oils. But what about wool trousers, waxed field jackets, and tweed overcoats? Even with raw denim jeans, debates rage online over how often something ought to be washed (the correct answer is: not as often as your mom would like, but more often than denim nerds believe).

We decided to write a full guide on how often every type of garment should be cleaned, and we reached out to experts in various fields for their opinions — from clothing designers to textile conservationists to specialty cleaners. Here’s what they had to say.

Suits, Sport Coats, and Wool Overcoats

Conventional wisdom says tailored clothing should be dry cleaned as infrequently as possible, but that’s only half the story. Most dry cleaners are little more than drop off points for the same industrial cleaning facilities, which are often located just outside a city’s limits. Clothes are sorted into batches and cleaned using harsh chemicals. Tailored garments are then pressed into shape using a hot machine, sort of like how someone makes a panini.

That process can be rough on clothes. Traditionally, high-end suits and sport coats are put through a much gentler process and then hand pressed with an iron, but doing so requires a certain kind of time and labor that isn’t cost efficient for many people. One Savile Row tailor I spoke to shrugged when I asked him what people should do. “In London, we’ll clean and press garments for clients, but that’s obviously not possible if someone lives in the US,” he said. “But you still have to clean your garments. The best you can do is find a decent dry cleaner and have things cleaned only when necessary.”

One solution is to use a garment brush in-between each wear. Doing so will knock dirt and food particles out of the fibers, which will lower the number of times you have to send things to the cleaners. To use the brush, lay your garment down on a hard surface, such as a wooden table, and use short flicks of the wrist to dislodge dirt. You also want to brush in the same direction — never scrub.

Even regular brushing, however, won’t get out all the dirt and oils, so you’ll need to dry clean your garments every once in a while. If you don’t mind spending a little more money, we recommend Rave FabriCARE in Scottsdale, Arizona. They’re a full cleaning services operation — they have their own machinery, offer a sponge-and-press service (an even gentler process that can be used in-between dry cleanings), and press everything by hand (which helps retain the three-dimensional shape of a well-tailored jacket). Garments are then carefully packed and shipped back to customers. Their services are a lot better for tailored garments, which means you can have things cleaned on a more frequent basis.

“How often these garments should be cleaned will depend on how they’re used,” says Rave FabriCARE’s founder and President, Stu Bloom. “If a jacket has only been lightly worn, it could go a few months without cleaning. But if you wore the garment somewhere with high humidity, to a place where people were smoking, or to an outdoor event where you perspired a lot, you’ll need to clean the garment more often.”

Camille Myers Breeze, the founder of Museum Textile Services, says wool garments should be dry cleaned once every six months, at the very least, before they’re put away for seasonal storage. “Good dry-cleaning is expensive, but it’s a preventative measure for moth damage,” she says. Moths are attracted to the scent of human sweat and food particles, and they’ll lay eggs in stained clothes. Once those eggs hatch, the larva will eat your garment’s wool fibers. “Moth eggs and larva are tiny, so they can be hard to see. Moths also like places that are dark and not often disturbed. So before you store something away for the season, dry clean it. It’s a sure fire way to make sure it’s free from moth eggs.”

Tailored Trousers

Tailored jackets and overcoats don’t have to be cleaned very often, but trousers pick up dirt and human oils more easily from daily wear. Bloom recommends cleaning suit trousers a little more often than their accompanying jackets. “People often think they need to clean their suit trousers along with their jackets to make sure they don’t discolor at different rates. But a good dry cleaner will use fluids that are crystal clear, like water,” he says. “Not all dry cleaners do this, however. Some places will reuse the same dirty cleaning fluids, which ends up leaving the clothes filthier than when you drop them off. That’s why you get that discoloration.”

How often you’ll need to send things to the cleaner will depend on person to person — some people sweat more than others, some people wear things to dirtier environments, and some people wear things more often. A good rule of thumb is to send tailored trousers to the cleaners once every ten wears and jackets every fifty. For a normal, one-week rotation of tailored clothing, that means trousers are professionally cleaned once every two or three months, and jackets are sent once every six (usually done just before they’re put away for seasonal storage). Obviously, regular brushing will help with some of this. And you’ll want to clean things if they get stained. “Never press anything that’s been stained,” says Bloom. “Doing so will set in the damage.”

Waxed Cotton Jackets

Even a waxed cotton jacket needs to be cleaned every once in a while. Alain Gauthier, the founder of New England Reproofers, has been a specialist in this field for thirty years, cleaning and reproofing waxed cotton jackets for everyday wearers and collectors alike (one collector recently sent in a rare 70-year-old Barbour for restoration). If you’re a sportsman and wear a waxed cotton jacket while hunting, Gauthier recommends cleaning your coat about once a year. People who wear these for style purposes, on the other hand, may only need to clean something once every two or three years.

“Wax tends to attract dirt, and you can tell something is dirty when there are dark patches,” he says. “At the same time, creases around the elbows will start to get lighter, as the wax is wearing off.” Gauthier recommends people get things cleaned and reproofed when necessary so the garment’s fibers don’t break down, but doing so requires a bit of care and attention. “You can’t just throw a waxed cotton jacket into a laundry machine; the wax will come off and damage your machine. You also can’t dry clean it, as dry cleaning will strip off all the wax. You need to remove some of the wax, but not all of it, otherwise the next time you go to wax it, the wax will leak through and get into the lining.”

There are tutorials online for how to clean a waxed cotton jacket at home, but the process can be difficult and time-consuming. Your best bet is to send it to a specialty cleaner such as New England Reproofers. They have a full cleaning and reproofing service, as well as an enzyme wash for removing musty smells. As someone who’s fairly light on his clothes, I find I can take care of most issues at home with a damp sponge, but a full cleaning service may be necessary if you’re taking a jacket out into harder environments or buying something second hand.

Knits and Woolen Accessories

Begg’s Creative Director, Lorraine Acornley, has been in the luxury woolen knitwear and accessories trade for over twenty years, designing sweaters and scarves for brands such as Albam, ESK, and Connolly. “It’s hard to say how often knits should be washed because it can vary so much from person to person,” she says. “If someone smokes or wears fragrances, they’ll need to wash sweaters more often. Or if they just wore something to a concert or outdoor event.”

I generally wash sweaters once every ten wears, and at the end of winter before things get put away for seasonal storage. Doing so lowers the chance they’ll be found by moths. Stout cotton knits, such as sweatshirts, can be thrown into the laundry machine, but finer cottons and anything made from wool, cashmere, or linen ought to be washed by hand. We have a full guide on how to handwash sweaters (it’s easier and quicker than you might think).

If you’re put off by the process, know that even Acornley sometimes throws things into the wash. “When we make sweaters, we get care instructions from the yarn supplier and pass that along to the consumer. Always read the care instructions,” she recommends. “You can lower the risk of you ruining a sweater by using a garment bag, and washing things on the wool wash cycle and using cold water. Looser knits should always be washed by hand, but I’ve put hardier sweaters into the machine. It’s gone wrong for me though, so you have to be prepared for that possibility.”

Jeans and Heavy Cotton Outerwear

When it comes to when you should wash something, few things stir up more passion than raw denim jeans. The rule-of-thumb often passed around online is that you should resist washing new jeans for at least six months — ideally longer, if you can stand it — to get higher contrast fades. A few years ago, University of Alberta student Josh Le made headlines when he wore the same pair of jeans for fifteen months. (Surprisingly, those jeans carried about the same amount of bacteria at the 15th-month mark as day 13 after washing).

Kiya Babzani, the co-founder of revered San Francisco-based denim shop Self Edge, has been fighting this idea for years. “As far as I know, this idea that you shouldn’t wash your jeans started in the late ‘90s when brands such as APC and Nudies started to get some play in underground fashion circles,” he says. “It’s true that if you want your APCs, Nudies, or other mass-market jeans to fade with a high contrast look, you don’t want to wash them often. This is because there’s little difference in the rate of indigo loss between high and low areas of friction. But if you buy unsanforized/ loomstate, rope-dyed denim, the indigo loss is going to vary greatly between those two areas, so you’ll get a high contrast look regardless of how often you wash your jeans. In the US, many people know that the Japanese make jeans that age very well, but not many people know that the Japanese guys who are into these repro styles also wash their jeans often. If you go to Inazuma, Lightning Magazine’s denim festival, you’ll see hundreds of well-worn jeans, many of which have been washed over fifteen times a year.”

So, how often should you wash your jeans? Babzani recommends doing so once every month or two, assuming you wear them 75% of the time. And skip the stuff about putting your dirty jeans in the freezer — another denim myth. “Your jeans will last longer if you wash them often because doing so removes the dirt, grime, and oils that can otherwise break down cotton fibers,” he says. Babzani is a little more lenient with heavy cotton outerwear, such as chore coats, trucker jackets, and other workwear styles. “It really depends on what you’re doing in your clothing. I personally only wash jackets when they get stained or if they pick up a scent, such as from smog or a BBQ.”

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Toast His Fans, the ‘Ones in the Seats,’ at the TIME 100 Gala

As one of six honorees selected to grace the covers of this year’s TIME 100 issue, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson showed up in style for the 2019 TIME 100 gala in New York City.

Following the dinner portion of Tuesday night’s celebration, Johnson gave a toast celebrating the “ones in the seats,” a.k.a. the fans who make his success possible.

I want to toast to the ones in the seats. And those are the ones who I felt like I’ve lived their life for many, many years, I’ve been in their shoes,” he said. “And now I get to be the guy, so blessed and so lucky…that people all around the world will now go sit in the seats and watch me.”

Johnson has had an extraordinary career, evolving from WWE champion to A-list action star in less than a decade. And he’s showing no signs of slowing down. In 2019, you can catch the Rock in the Fast and the Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw as well as the highly anticipated Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel.

This is his second appearance on the TIME 100 list; he first made the cut in 2016.

Read the full transcript of the Johnson’s toast below.

All right. So I was thinking, okay, well, you know, what am I going to — who am I going to toast to on this night? I mean, there’s such distinguished guests, so successful, so impactful. What a room. What a pleasure it is to be here, and congratulations again to everybody tonight. My first time attending this event and what a night.

So I was thinking, okay, well, who am I going to toast to? And, of course, I ran down the list. My first was to my much better half at home, my daughters, my family. I have three daughters, all women in my family. Yes, yes, yeah. It’s called “payback.” Yeah, and God said, “You will pay.” I have a 17-year-old daughter, a 3-year-old, and a 1-year-old, we just celebrated her birthday, I thought, well, they’re certainly influential in my life. And, you know, the thought here was who can I toast who is going to be that influential, that inspirational, that inspiring.

And then I went down the list, maybe my business partners and colleagues. I thought, I know who I got to toast. I want to toast — and I figured this out as I was flying here yesterday — I said, I want to toast to the ones in the seats. And those are the ones who I felt like I’ve lived their life for many, many years, I’ve been in their shoes, because when I was a little boy, 10 years old, I was running around, a pimply face, wide big brown eyes, and a really messed-up afro, yeah, this was very true. I’m half black and half Samoan, so trust me, my hair didn’t know what to do. You have to — I mean, so much so between the ages of 9 and 11 everybody thought I was a little girl, yeah, true story, that’s why I need therapy. So but I was — oh, hand clap for therapy, yup. But a big hand clap for therapy, yeah.

So, so the ones in the seats, and I thought at ten years old, I went back and I thought, yeah, so I was the one in the seats. And I used to sit in the seats and I used to watch, and I used to watch my dad and I used to watch my grandfather. And for those of you in the room who don’t know, which is probably most of you who don’t know this, I come from a long line of a professional wrestlers. And my grandfather and my dad wrestled, but well before the big contracts of pro wrestling these days. Wrestled here, all throughout New York City, sometimes at Madison Square Garden, but usually they were in, like, dank arenas filled with smoke and beer. But at ten years old, I still sat in the seats, and I watched my wrestling heroes, and I dreamed. And then every week, without a shadow of a doubt, every week on Saturdays I would go to the theaters, and I would watch my movie star heroes, in the seats. And I’m watching, and I watched my Hollywood heroes, I loved Clint Eastwood. And, I mean, when Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark hit, I thought, I want to be that guy, I want to be Indiana Jones. And, again, in the seats, dreaming of Indiana Jones, just with more muscles and no pimples. But I was in the seats.

And Marc Benioff — did I pronounce your name right, Marc? I’m just making sure — said to me earlier, he said something really profound and I really loved it, and I asked him to repeat it. And he says, ‘We often overestimate what we can do in a year, underestimate what we can do in decades.’

Overestimate what we could do in a year, underestimate what we could do in decades. And here I am years later, decades later, here with all of you distinguished guests, very successful, highly influential all around the globe, and now I get to be that guy who is enjoying this blessing. Because really, that’s what it is, we’re all so blessed in this room, what big blessings, yeah, we’re so blessed, look at this. And now I get to be the guy, so blessed and so lucky, I’m like I’m the luckiest son of a bitch in the room, that people all around the world will now go sit in the seats and watch me. I thought, man, you know what?

So I’m going to raise a glass of my tequila, which is over there, to the ones who really for me and in my life really make the whole thing happen, make this whole dance happen. And I think it happens for all of us, where it’s — it’s the fans, and it’s the audience, and it’s the people, and it’s that human connection, Gayle, that we were talking about, a human connection when you’re able to impact people. It’s that human connection, it’s the consumer, it’s these people, I feel, that make it all work.

So to everybody watching, I’m going to post this to about 200 million people, this is for you, I love you and I thank you. And to all you guys in the room, congratulations on your recognition tonight, so well deserved, it’s a pleasure meeting so many of you and shaking your hands and giving you hugs. TIME magazine, thank you for putting me on the cover, I really appreciate it. And by the way, I’ve gone from that pimply kid to the cover of TIME Magazine, holy shit. Man.

So the toast for me of the night goes to the ones in the seats. Thank you guys so much.

Towanda Finally Reveals The Man Who’s Been Blowing Her Braxton Back To Pieces

Celebrities Visit Hallmark's 'Home & Family'

Source: Paul Archuleta / Getty

The self-proclaimed “responsible one” in the Braxton clan just revealed who her mystery boyfriend is. While many of the other sisters have brought their new men into the fold, Towanda has kept him pretty much hidden off of camera until recently.

On the most recent episode of We TV’s Braxton Family Values, Tamar Braxton finds out that her sister’s man was actually right under the family’s nose the whole time.

In one scene Tamar sits down with producer Sean Hall, cousin of fellow producer, Tricky Stewart, and ties it all together. As Tamar talks with Sean, she slowly realizes that he’s the man her sister has been spending all her time with. The sisters worked with Sean on the 1996 debut album featuring Trina Braxton, Tamar and Towanda, titled, So Many Ways.

The reveal was also under our nose the whole time as Towanda herself posted a photo of her and her bae to Instagram on the same day that the episode aired.

She captioned the photo, “@kingladybug #funcouple #bfv #goodness #cool #happy #peaceful #beautiful.”

Sean also posted a photo of his own of the two enjoying the ski slopes and posted a blog of their good time to YouTube.

Towanda has pretty much kept her new love life under wraps after the public demise of her marriage to Andre Carter. Towanda filed for divorce in 2016, after 12 years of marriage. The divorce was settled in 2017, along with a custody agreement involving the former couple’s children Brooke and Braxton.

We’re happy to see her bask in the glow of love and since the secret is out, maybe we’ll catch more glimpses of the relationship as the season continues.

Prince Louis’ birthday portrait is VERY different to his brother and sister’s photos

Words by Maisie Bovingdon

Prince Louis celebrated his first birthday on the 23rd of April, and to mark the milestone Kensington Palace released adorable portraits of him ahead of his big day, and boy were they cute!

Kate Middleton and Prince William gave fans a special treat over the weekend as they shared a trio of images of their youngest child on Kensington Palace’s social media accounts, and our hearts well and truly melted.

The three images included one of Louis in a blue knitted jumper with a dog emblazoned on the front – which we believe could be a tribute to the Queen’s late corgi – and another two of him sporting a berry red knitted jumper and pair of chinos, as he beams with happiness at the camera and shows off his toothy grin.

These photos are very different to the first birthday pictures of his siblings – but did you notice why?

Back in 2014, three photos were shared of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first born, Prince George. Two images saw the little prince in his element playing with his mum and dad, at the Sensational Butterflies exhibition in the Natural History Museum.

A separate photograph saw him walking around the London hotspot wearing a pair of blue striped dungarees, a blue polo top and matching blue shoes. Though he ambled around the grounds solo he still seemed very poised and pristine.

Similar to Louis, George was distracted in the shots and did not look directly at the camera, but Louis was left entirely to his own devices to play in the grounds, reach for the camera, and giggle to his heart’s content as he rolled around in the grass on the day of the shoot (adorable!)

Two years after George in 2016, images of Princess Charlotte, looking pretty in pink playing inside at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, were released ahead of her May birthday.

Charlotte’s images bucked the trend as she posed inside the royal residence, whereas George and Louis’ pictures were both taken outdoors. Louis and Charlotte’s pictures were taken at the same location in Norfolk, while George’s took place in London.

In some images Charlotte plays with her toys, but unlike her brothers, she looked straight faced as she gazed down the lens like a true pro.

Charlotte started something; the solo shot. For Charlotte and Louis’ first birthday pictures they were not accompanied by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, although George was for a few of the takes.

The main difference between the three is that Louis looks like he is in his element and is in a less formal set-up, with not a care in the world. His jumper is covered in strands of grass, which, alongside the massive open smile on his face, hints Louis was giving free rein to do what he wanted without anyone cleaning up after him or giving orders (although they may have done and he just didn’t listen #idol).

However, the first birthday pictures of his older brother and sister appeared more staged and less like the relaxed and playful environment Louis found himself in.

Eagle-eyed fans will notice some similarities in their appearance in the photographs, as all three children have their hair swept over to one side, all wore the same navy strap shoes as well as blue garments.

Regardless, we love them all and are eagerly waiting for pictures to be released of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s little one, who is tipped to arrive any time this month… Eek!

Skazi Brand Bucks Brazil’s Political, Economic Turmoil

Brazilian fashion brand Skazi intends to double growth to over 20 million reals, or $ 5.1 million, this year amid strong demand for its women’s wear that targets “powerful, sexy women” in their thirties to fifties, said marketing director Diego Lemos.
“We are going to grow 100 percent this year and may grow 50 percent to 100 percent in the next three years,” Lemos told WWD from the company’s flagship store in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. “Last year we grew 40 percent while other brands were declining.”
Lemos claimed the company is vertically integrated, manufacturing most of its yarns and fabrics locally, including in an 86,000-square-foot factory next to its store. That, coupled with clever celebrity and influencer-driven marketing, helped it top a recent survey naming it Brazil’s top women’s wear brand, he added.
“We only have wholesale, not retail, and we make everything ourselves, from the yarn to the finished garment. This has been the secret of our success,” he said.
Skazi, which is also about to launch its first men’s collection, plans to open 100 new points of sale this year to boost its count to 1,100, according to Lemos. While international markets account for 2 percent of sales, the brand plans to

HBCUs And Student Loan Debt: How Not To Get Caught Up

TODAY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT GRADUATES OF HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, AND STUDENT LOAN DEBT. WHAT IS THE LATEST?

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal caught my eye. In it, the authors note that while historically Black colleges and universities have helped millions of Black students achieve financial prosperity, they may now be hindering some of those they seek to help due to high student debt loads. This morning, I want to walk out listeners through what is happening, why it is happening, and what can be done to avoid putting themselves or their family members in this situation.

WHAT, SPECIFICALLY, DID THE WALL STREET JOURNAL’S RESEARCH FIND?

What they uncovered is a really big deal, Tom. Looking at the Department of Education data from 2017, the article’s authors found that while America’s 82 four-year HBCUs make up just 5% of four-year institutions, they account for more than half of the 100 schools with the lowest three-year student-loan repayment rates.

Perhaps more importantly, they found HBCU alumni graduate with about $ 29,000 in mean federal loan debt. This number is 32% higher than graduates of other public and nonprofit four-year schools. Additionally, most HBCU grads are unable to pay down any of their original loan balance in the first few years out of school. This means that during their initial working years, they continue to accrue interest on these loans, adding to their burden.

WHAT FACTORS ARE THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTORS TO THESE NUMBERS?

It all comes down to wealth. Black families have the least household wealth among racial groups in the U.S., according to Federal Reserve data. Black Americans have lower average incomes and a smaller percentage own homes compared to the broader population. This resource gap pushes Black students to turn to student loans to finance their higher education costs. Add to this the fact that tuition increases have outstripped inflation – let alone wage growth – over the past 3 decades, amplifying the problem. Finally, many HBCUs have fewer resources and smaller endowments, limiting their ability to provide financial relief to low-income students.

IS IT ONLY BLACK GRADUATES OF HBCUS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH STUDENT DEBT?

It is not. Nearly half of Black student loan borrowers who were freshmen at any college in the 2003-2004 school year ended up defaulting on a student loan within a year of the repayment period beginning. That is twice the rate of white borrowers. The article notes research by a Columbia University professor found that even controlling for socioeconomic status, Blacks have bigger debt burdens than whites.

Again, this is compounded by wealth disparities, especially the wage gap. According to the Economic Policy Institute, Black college graduates between ages 21 and 24 earned nearly 17% less per hour, on average, than white graduates. So not only to Black graduates have higher debt loads, after graduation they often have fewer resources with which to pay them.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE?

From the university perspective, many HBCUs are already working to address the issue. Some are reducing tuition rates. Others are limiting the amount students can borrow for non-tuition expenses like housing or personal expenses. And many HBCUs are shifting their course offerings and curriculum to focus on higher paying majors.

These are important steps. More broadly, universities should work to reduce non-instructional expenses for students. In terms of policy changes, the amount available to low-income students through the federal Pell grant program could be raised to reflect tuition increases. Expanding employer tuition assistance tax incentives would also help college graduates when they entered the workforce.

WHAT SHOULD LISTENERS KEEP IN MIND WHEN IT COMES TO STUDENT LOANS?

For families, there are long-term and short-term solutions. If you are preparing for your children to go to college and you have some time, the best thing you can do is to start saving now. The two most common vehicles are 529 plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts.

The 529 plans are offered in various states and typically give you a menu of investment options to choose from. Funds can be withdrawn tax-free only for qualified education expenses such as tuition, books, and room and board. Coverdell Education Savings Accounts also allow your investments to grow tax-free, as long as they are used for qualified education expenses. Coverdell accounts are limited to a maximum of $ 2,000 per year, while 529 plans generally have higher contribution limits.

In the short-term, if you or your kids are taking out loans, you want to keep the amount as small as possible. This means not adding onto your loan amount for extras like meals or housing, if at all possible. Living a spartan lifestyle while in school will mean you are not burdened by excessive loans after. And once you do graduate, take advantage of income-based repayment plans on federal loans. This will limit your annual payments to 10 percent of your total income, giving you more breathing room for living expenses, and to save and invest.

Over $2 Million Raised for Black Churches Burned Down in Louisiana

The three historically black churches that were burned down earlier this month in Louisiana are finally getting the help they desperately need.

The Seventh District Baptist Association, a 149-year-old nonprofit religious organization, partnered with the Governor of Louisiana, local leaders, elected officials, the impacted churches, other faith organizations, and the community to raise funds to support the sanctuaries. The organization, which is led by President Freddie Jack and consists of approximately 60 Baptist churches from seven parishes in Southwest Louisiana, launched a GoFundMe campaign on April 10. However, nothing was really happening until New York magazine and HuffPost writer Yahsar Ali challenged his social media followers to donate $ 1,000 to the campaign, sparking a worldwide outpouring of support. More than 37,000 people from across the country and over 40 countries and territories around the world donated to the campaign in just seven days. Ali announced that the campaign raised $ 2 million in a tweet on April 18. More than $ 2.1 million had been raised by April 22.

The donations received are earmarked specifically for the Seventh District’s impacted member churches: St. Mary Baptist Church, Greater Union Baptist Church, and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

According to an update on the GoFundMe page, charges have been filed against the man accused of burning the three African American churches. Holden Matthews, the 21-year-old white man and son of a St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s deputy, was arrested and charged with two counts of simple arson, one count of aggravated arson, and three counts hate crimes. His attorney entered a not guilty plea.

The St. Landry Parish District Attorney is prosecuting the case. The DA filed a motion asking that the suspect’s bail be denied, stating that Matthews is “an imminent danger” and should be kept behind bars until his trial.

Beyonce’s Biggest Surprises, From Her Pregnancies to Her Music

The Beyhive likely never expected Beyoncé to become the reigning queen of surprises, but that she is.

Since 2011, Queen Bey has been sending her dedicated legion of fans into overdrive with the many unexpected twists and turns in both her personal and professional lives. To date, she has surprise-announced four albums, two films and two pregnancies in ways that no one else could.

It all started at the MTV Video Music Awards in August 2011. When Beyoncé took the stage to perform her single “Love on Top,” the star-studded audience had no idea that she had something up her sleeve — or someone in her belly. At the end of the song, she dropped her microphone, unbuttoned her sparkly purple jacket and rubbed her stomach, revealing she was pregnant with her and husband Jay-Z’s first child.

Two years later, the Grammy winner broke the internet when she basically invented the strategy of dropping a full album without any prior announcement. Her eponymous fifth record, which included the singles “XO” and “Drunk in Love,” shattered multiple records, and she similarly went on to surprise-release three more albums, most notably 2016’s Lemonade.

Beyoncé took a page out of her own book in February 2017 when she shared the news of her second pregnancy, this time with twins. Her stunning Instagram announcement quickly became the social media platform’s most-liked post of all time, though Kylie Jenner’s first photo of daughter Stormi and advertising creative Chris Godfrey’s “World Record Egg” eventually surpassed it.

The former Destiny’s Child member’s latest surprise came in April 2019 in two forms: a Netflix concert film titled Homecoming and an accompanying live album documenting her 2018 Coachella performance.

Scroll down to take a look back at Beyoncé’s biggest surprises so far!

Wool Fabric “Super” Numbers Explained

Generally speaking, worsted wool is the most popular fabric for men’s suits around the world and while there are technically many fabrics that fall into the definition of worsted, there are subtle differences in classification among them. One of these determining factors is the wool’s so-called super number. You may be familiar with seeing terms like super 120s or super 180s on online retail pages or in fabric swatch books but what exactly does the term super mean in relation to worsted wool?

What Qualifies As Worsted Wool?

The term worsted can alternately describe either a combed yarn, a fabric made from a combed yarn, or a weight of yarn. A combed yarn, by the way, is made when wool fibers are rotated by metal combs that align the long fibers while discarding these short staple fibers. The result is a long lasting fine and smooth yarn with a somewhat glossy finish. Also, by adjusting the pull of these combs on the wool, one can get lighter or heavier yarns whereas varying the twists will impact the look, feel, and strength of the yarn. Tight twisting provides a crisper feel whereas loose twisting makes for a softer but weaker yarn.

Is A Lighter Worsted Wool Better Than A Heavier Weight?

The answer is not necessarily, no. Let’s take an overcoat as an example of this principle; while a softer fabric would feel more pleasant on one’s skin, a heavier coat made of something like Donegal tweed is going to be much more sturdy and keep you warmer than a lighter and softer cashmere coat would. Of course, you’re not often going to be wearing an overcoat against your bare skin but this illustrates the principle that the heavier weight is going to be sturdier than the lighter weight even if the lighter weight is softer.

Nordic patterns wool sweaters
Nordic patterns wool sweaters

Similarly, you might be under the impression that a lighter weight weave is going to be cooler to wear and a heavier weight would be warmer but this isn’t always the case either. Something that’s heavy but relatively open in its weave like a fresco fabric, for instance, is going to feel much cooler when worn than something that’s tightly woven and lighter like a super 150s fabric, for instance.

With all that said though, fabrics that are commonly available today are just going to be lighter in general than fabrics that were produced 30 or 40 years ago or even more. This will be readily apparent to you if you visit a thrift store and pick out an old suit. It’s probably just going to be heavier than something you’d buy today. It’s important to keep in mind then that a lighter fabric with a higher super number is not a hallmark of better fabric, it just indicates that the fibers used were thinner in diameter. Similarly, the super number doesn’t provide any information about the weave or how heavy the fabric is.

You might be surprised to learn that the wool that goes into a great many suits that are produced around the world today comes from sheep that are descended from just two rams and four ewes. In 1789, King Charles the fourth of Spain gifted six sheep to the Dutch East India Company; these sheep were then shipped to South Africa. In 1795, a British immigrant to Australia named John McArthur bought 26 of the offspring of these original six sheep and transported them back to botany bay. These 26 sheep were then bred to form the backbone of what’s now the Australian wool industry that has sheep that now number more than one hundred and twenty million. The wool from these sheep produced in grades between 60s and 80s around this time, essentially measuring how fine the yarns were, was top of the line. As such, most of it went directly to tailors on Savile Row. 100s grade wool meanwhile was thought to be unattainable at this time in history.

Sheep produce most of the world's wool
Sheep produce most of the world’s wool

Until the wool mill of Joseph Lumbs and Sons in Huddersfield West Yorkshire England was finally able to produce some of it. Lumb bought enough of this wool for an entire year’s supply and brought it to market under the term Lumb’s Huddersfield super 100s thus super terminology for worsted wool suits was born. At this time in the late 18th century, British wool merchants would often refer to their wares by largely subjective terminology in describing how fine the wool was; terms like low, medium, fine, the newly created super, and so on. But because producers and consumers eventually wanted terminology that was more objective in how the wool was rated, the city of Bradford, England led the way in grading wool more objectively. This process became known as the English worsted yarn count system or more generally, the Bradford system. Fast forward now to 1968 when the USDA created the United States standards for grade wool, this assigned ranges of average fiber diameter or AFD and maximum standard deviation to the previously set up Bradford count.

Lumb’s Huddersfield

So with these standardization systems in place, super still sits as the top designation for how fine wool may be. With that said, some companies have gotten a little subjective again in exactly how they’re grading their super wools. So for example, a super 200s wool from one manufacturer might be a bit different in how fine it is from a super 200s wool from another manufacturer. Things are generally going to be fairly consistent, overall. When we’re discussing reputable manufacturers of high quality, most of them are going to abide by the guidelines set out in the fabric labeling code of practice from the International Wool Textile Organization or IWTO.

So to recap then, what the super number is actually measuring is how fine the wool is because what’s being measured is how many times each of the individual woolen yarns have been twisted around. Generally then, the higher the super number is, the finer the cloth in question will be. Often, this means it will also be lighter but as we said earlier, this isn’t always the case. How fine these woolen yarns are is typically measured in micrometers also called microns.

Spun wool yarns
Spun wool yarns

So a higher super number will mean that a fabric is going to be softer to the touch and generally will feel more like luxurious. Conversely, a lower super number will mean that the cloth is more sturdy and probably warmer. As we’ve said, it will generally be heavier but not always. While it’s commonly believed that the super number of a given fabric also has something to do with its individual thread count, this simply isn’t true and there’s not a correlation between the two measurements. While a higher super number does to some extent denote the exclusivity of a given fabric, because something like a super 200s would contain some of the rarest wool fibers available, this is only an indication of that exclusivity and rarity, not necessarily subjective quality.

Here’s another important note, the full word “super” can only be applied to fabrics made of pure new wool. Also, fabrics made with wool blended with other things like cashmere, alpaca, silk, or so on can use the slightly related S designation, though not the full word super.

How Do These Super Numbers Translate Into Considerations For Wearing?

Stated simply, anything with a higher super number is going to be more temperamental and hard to care for over time. The thinner, finer fibers of a wool with a high super number may have an amazing hand which is to say how soft they feel to the touch but they’re also going to break down much more quickly than a heftier fiber would.

As an example here, something like a super 180s wool would probably feel softer on the body whereas something like a super 100s wool is going to be more durable, less prone to wrinkling, and probably better suited for repeated everyday wear. On that note, snags in finer fabrics happen much more frequently and are also far more difficult to repair than a snag in a comparatively coarse fabric.

Open Weave Wool Suting Fabric

Speaking generally then, it’s our opinion that it’s best not to get overly caught up in the super numbers of your worsted wool suits. Very good quality suits can be created from wool in the super 100s to super 150s range and even below that, and of course, a suit that is well fitted to the wearer’s body is going to look great regardless of what the super number might be or even if it doesn’t have one. Conversely, something in a super 180s or super 220s wool is still going to look sloppy if it doesn’t fit your frame well.

Finally today, we’ve got a few general guidelines for you if you really do want to pay close attention to the super numbers of your suits and how you could wear them effectively.

Gary Cooper in a wool jacket and printed silk scarf
Gary Cooper in a wool jacket and printed silk scarf

For standard everyday wear, you could go with something with a pretty low super number. Something that’s below 100 up to a super 100s or super 120s, for example. For an important business meeting, a conference, or something that’s a bit more important than the average day-to-day at the office, you could go with something like a super 130s or super 150s and for special events, you could go with something like a super 180s or anything above that. Again, these are just hypothetical suggestions.

If you really do want to pay attention to your super number, of course, you could wear a suit made from a different material entirely than worsted wool and still look good or you could wear a worsted suit that doesn’t even have a registered super number. You just have to make sure that the suit is fitting you well and flattering your form.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion then, while the super number of a worsted wool can be handy in determining how fine and soft the yarns of a given wool are, it shouldn’t be used as the only measure of quality in wool suiting. Remember to focus first on fit then determine if you really like the look of the suit and how often you think you will wear it. From this point, you can consider the super number. So which part of today’s explanation did you find most intriguing? And if you are one of those men that pays attention to the super number of your suits, do you have a favorite number? Chico’s FAS Creates Intimates Brand TellTale

Just in time for National Lingerie Day, Chico’s FAS, parent company to women’s apparel and accessory retailer Chico’s, is launching bra and underwear brand TellTale.
The intimates line will start with seven collections, ranging from sexy to comfortable to functional. And with names like The Ghoster or The Romantic, the idea is to offer a little something for everyone.
“No woman is one thing,” Kimberly Grabel, general manager, or “ringleader,” of TellTale, told WWD.

TellTale’s Influencer collection.

The collections include a mix of push-up bras and bralettes in everything from cotton to see-through mesh, as well as underwear and bodysuits.
The target audience, Grabel said, is the “new adult woman,” somewhere between 30 to 35.
“She’s not fully set in her ways,” Grabel explained. “She hasn’t had kids yet. Or, maybe she’s had a baby, but she takes the baby out with all her friends on a Saturday night for dinner, because she’s in denial that this baby is going to change her life. So, she’s kind of in that life stage.”

The Lover collection is part of the new TellTale brand.

7 Slow Fashion Workwear Brands to Try

In honor of Earth Day today, we’re sharing an update to our Guide to Slow Fashion: more slow fashion workwear brands. We’ll talk about brands that emphasize quality craftsmanship, ethical practices, and eco-friendly production. If you haven’t yet checked out the series, which we launched in 2015, here’s what we’ve covered so far:

Small, independent brands are on one side of the spectrum, while on the other side are big fast-fashion companies such as H&M, Zara, and ASOS that are trying to be more responsible and sustainable — for example, we featured H&M Conscious in a previous post in the series. A couple of years ago, Fashionista featured a piece that asked, “Do the H&M Conscious and ASOS Made in Kenya Collections Count as Ethical Fashion?” When you’re seeking out slow fashion/ethical fashion, are you more likely to buy from a smaller independent brand with a sole focus on those practices, or a mainstream retailer with an ethical/sustainable line?

I’ll note that the brands below offer a lot of items that are definitely more on the casual side (low necklines, high hemlines, more casual styles in general), but you can find office-appropriate pieces from all of them. Also, the entirety of the size ranges we mention for the brands aren’t always available for every item they offer.

Here are some slow fashion workwear brands worth checking out:

Theory’s “Good Fabrics”

Good Wool and Good Linen are Theory’s environmentally-conscious lines, available at their own website (linen/wool) as well as Nordstrom (wool only — including Nordstrom exclusives) and Neiman Marcus (wool only). The merino wool comes from sheep in Tasmania and is ethically and responsibly farmed, while the flax that produces the stretch linen is grown in China without chemicals in a process that produces no waste. The fabrics are woven in Italy using renewable energy and other sustainable practices. Sizes are 00–16.

Pure Collection

Pure Collection sources its sustainable cashmere from goats in Mongolia, where the company works directly with herders to avoid overgrazing — a big contributor to desertification — by encouraging them to give their goats healthy feed. They have a focus on slow fashion as well; as Pure’s website notes, “Each one of our cashmere garments undergoes 40 different hand processes.” The clothing is available on the brand’s own website and from John Lewis. Sizes are 2–22.

Amour Vert

Amour Vert makes its clothing in limited quantities from sustainable fabrics — and 97% of it is produced in factories near its San Francisco office. The fabrics used include a sustainable, pesticide-free, biodegradable modal; GOTS-certified organic cotton; ethical merino wool; and more. Also, with every t-shirt purchased, the company will plant a tree in California’s Sierra National Forest. After all, the brand’s name means “green love” in French. (And now I have Jody Watley’s “Real Love” stuck in my head, and oh yes I am old.) Sizes are XXS–XL.

Emerson Fry

Emerson Fry clothing focuses on “limited production runs each week of new and existing products” made in the U.S.A. and also offers its India Collection, made by artisans in India who use heirloom hand print and dye techniques on organic natural fabrics using low-impact and natural dyes. For its U.S.-made line, the company takes orders before producing the items, and you can sign up here to get updates. Sizes are XXS–XL.

Reformation

Reformation tries to keep 75% of its fabrics either (1) natural fibers that are rapidly renewable and plant-based and have a potential for circularity, and (2) almost all natural or recycled fibers. They prioritize energy-efficiency, recycling, locally/domestically-sourced materials, green building practices for stores, and ethical/sustainable practices in general. Most of Reformation’s clothing is made in the U.S., and you can actually tour the factory in L.A.) Sizes are XS–3X; you can also find the brand at Nordstrom

No.6 Store

No.6 Store says it “takes great pride in its manufacturing practices” — and it makes its signature clothing line and handmade clogs in the U.S. In contrast to typical fast fashion practices of selling inexpensive, trendy items for customers to only wear for a short time, No.6 Store says its goal is to “create pieces that can be worn over and over.” In addition to its own designs, No.6’s site also offers dozens of other designers. Sizes are XS–L.

Grana

On its website, Grana states that it wants to “fight fast-fashion one item at a time.” The site shares details about the origin and production of the various fabrics used; for example, its Tencel™ is made from sustainable forest wood pulp, and the chemicals used to make it are reused, not released as pollutants. Note that Grana’s wool comes from Tasmania, the source of Theory’s Good Wool, and that it’s woven at the same Italian mill, Tollegno 1900. (Sound good? Get 10% off with our referral code!) Sizes are XXS–XL.

Meghan McCain Blows Up Over Mueller Report; Whoopi Goldberg Cuts Her Off

The View

Returning from a week-long break, The View began Monday’s broadcast reacting to the recently released Mueller report. Naturally, that segment ended with Whoopi Goldberg cutting off conservative co-host Meghan McCain during a tirade claiming Democrats are going to get President Trump re-elected by “demonizing” all Republicans.

In response to Sen. Mitt Romney’s (R-UT) highly critical statement of Trump following the report—which found Trump repeatedly tried to obstruct the Russia probe—co-host Sunny Hostin said the Utah senator would still likely not vote for impeachment if it reached the Senate. Romney and other Republicans, he said, will ultimately refuse to hold Trump accountable.

Former Fox News host Abby Huntsman jumped in to debate both Hostin and co-host Joy Behar, noting that Trump’s base feels like he “got a big win” from the report because the media set an expectation that “he was going to be booted out.” Behar and Hostin, meanwhile, pointed out that Trump’s overall approval rating went down to 37 percent—and that’s where McCain jumped in for her take.

Sean Hannity: ‘Hillary Clinton’s Email Server Is a Real Threat to Our Safety and Security’

Two-and-a-half years after the 2016 presidential election and nearly three years after the FBI closed the investigation into the former Secretary of State’s private email server without criminal charges, Fox News host Sean Hannity declared: “Hillary Clinton’s email server is a real threat to our safety and security.”

During the opening monologue of Hannity on Monday night, the Trump-boosting host called for an investigation into the Russia probe investigators, something he and other conservative media figures have pushed hard for recently, especially after the release of the redacted Mueller report.

After railing against the the previous administration and his belief that it engaged in the “biggest abuse of corruption in our history” and calling on House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) to come on his show and provide evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, Hannity eventually shifted his focus to the hacking of emails during the 2016 election.

I tested Mented Cosmetics’ first-ever foundation on my oily, dehydrated skin

I tested Mented Cosmetics’ first-ever foundation on my oily, dehydrated skin

I tested Mented Cosmetics’ first-ever foundation on my oily, dehydrated skin

People are always shocked to hear that as an oily skin gal, I prefer hydrating foundations over matte. The confusion lies in people not truly understanding that both dry skin and oily skin need hydration, aka water. Whenever I use a super matte foundation, my skin feels dry and uncomfortable. However, hydrating foundation formulas always leave my skin feeling plump and looking like my natural complexion, but better.

When Mented Cosmetics announced it was venturing into the wonderful world of complexion cosmetics with a hydrating foundation, SKIN by Mented, I jumped for joy. Considering Mented’s line is more geared towards the everyday woman, this type of foundation is a perfect addition.

Over a glass of pinot noir, KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson dreamt up the brand from their personal struggles to find the perfect nude lipstick as women of color. Over the years, Mented has gone from just a line of nude lipsticks to a full collection of cosmetics including eyeshadow, lip glosses and now, the Skin by Mented foundation stick. The newly launched foundation is vegan, dermatologist-tested, and offers two key things I look for in a foundation: buildable coverage and a natural, skin-like finish.

Skin by Mented is a foundation, but it can also be used as a concealer or contour stick.

Swatches and First Impressions

There are 16 shades of Skin by Mented, broken into four shade groups—light, tan, medium and deep. I received three different shades of the Skin by Mented foundation stick—T20 (highlight/concealer), M30 (foundation) and, D30 (contour). Mented also launched a complexion brush that can be used to blend the foundation stick.

The foundation alone is $ 30 while the brush is $ 14—you can save a few dollars by buying a foundation-and-brush bundle for $ 40 (which honestly is a great value, imo).

Mika Robinson / HelloGiggles

The foundation shade alone is a bit darker than my skin tone, but with the warmer part of spring right around the corner, I’ll be out of the house more and getting a nice tan. The other two sticks left me with a subtle highlight and contour, which I prefer on any regular day.

The foundation is holding up rather nicely. So far, it feels and looks like skin.

I’ve mainly been working home today where it’s a million degrees. My skin has gotten dewier, but it doesn’t look bad at all.

Final thoughts:

Mika Robinson / HelloGiggles

From my experience, stick foundations are hit or miss. I’m happy to say that the Skin by Mented foundation is a hit for me. Unlike other foundation sticks I’ve tried in the past, it’s very easy to blend and doesn’t settle into pores. I also like that the coverage is buildable but doesn’t get cakey at all.

These days, I apply foundation with a brush more often than sponges, and this brush works very well with the formula. I’d recommend using a mix of tapping motions and short strokes (with the brush) to blend the foundation seamlessly into your skin.

As much as I love a hydrating foundation, I don’t like my foundation to have a very dewy finish from start to finish. I prefer my oils to kick in throughout the day and make my foundation dewy (is that weird?). I could tell just by swatching that this foundation would look super dewy on my skin. To tweak the finish, I applied a little loose powder before and after the foundation. If you have oily skin, I’d recommend using this method as well.

The shade range by, today’s standards, is short-ish.

Considering that 40+ shades is becoming the norm, Mented’s small range may come as a shock. But it’s important to remember that Mented was founded to focus on the needs of WOC. I think the smaller range is warranted, but I also don’t think more shades in the long term would do any harm. Overall, the foundation is a great formula, and I really hope to see it climb the ranks of some of the beauty world’s holy grails.

If you’re looking to try out Skin by Mented for yourself, it’s available on Mented’s website. Unfortunately, the foundation is not available in stores, but Mented has a handy tool to help you match your shade online. You can also purchase a sample pack for $ 5.

Planet Blue Founder Creates Label Sun Becomes Her

LOS ANGELES — Planet Blue founder Ling-Su Chinn’s been busy over the past several months building out new contemporary brand Sun Becomes Her with business partner Githa Duncker.
The line’s launch had been expected after WWD reported last summer Chinn had left the company she founded and built more than 20 years ago in a bid to get back to what she called her roots: focusing on branding and designing a line that embodies the West Coast for a global consumer.
Chinn had pointed out the challenges that come with also having to balance business objectives around growth in new markets as being a struggle that took time away from more creative endeavors. What she built was sizable with the company’s new ceo reporting last year volume north of $ 40 million.
She still retains what she called a “significant ownership” stake in the company but preferred not to further discuss the business.
“I just really wanted to launch something not being tied to the commercial hassles and timeframes,” said Chinn, who serves as creative director of the new brand. “I really wanted to launch a more elevated product, more thoughtfully designed product that we didn’t have any timeframes in doing.”
That’s given way to a launch

On Earth Day we see if it’s actually possible to live without plastic

Delphine Chui gives it a go

plastic free

I’ve always considered myself a mindful person when it comes to the environment. I’m vegetarian, I try to be conscious of the origins of my food, I take public transport as much as possible and I’m an avid recycler.

But, if I’m being honest, I’ve never delved into what actually happens to my rubbish or recycling after I chuck it into the respective bins.

So, I took on a challenge to live without plastic for a week and the statistics and realities of what I learnt was shocking. And, although I may never be ‘zero waste,’ I can certainly put a dent in how much I’m contributing to landfill and that’s a start, isn’t it? Here’s what I learnt…

No one is recycling enough

As a nation, we only recycle 14% of recyclable plastic. And around 50% of the plastic we do recycle is never actually recycled because it’s not been properly disposed of. I admit I never looked at my local council’s recycling policy before this week so was guilty of putting things like plastic bags in my green lid wheelie bin (rather than at a specific plastic bag collection bin) and being completely confused about what I should do with bubblewrap (which can jam recycling machines if not put in the right place.)

Our coffee consumption is getting out of control

Think about how much coffee you drink every day. Now, think about how many cups you chuck in the bin. Yeah, I quickly realised that it all adds up, with 7 million coffee cups thrown away in the UK every day – which adds up to 25,000 tonnes of coffee cup waste every year, to be exact. So, I got a bamboo forever cup instead since bamboo is the world’s most sustainable crop. And, it’s worth noting that coffee shops don’t even bat an eyelid when you hand it over for them to fill.

London consumes the largest amount of plastic bottled water in the UK

I’m guilty of it. I constantly buy multipacks of bottled water to bring me to work every day. I liked the convenience of it but considering that by 2050, there will be more plastic bottles in the oceans than fish, we really need to fix this. Plastic bottles make up 10% of all litter in the Thames, with ¾ of the fish inside consuming it, and considering how much I care about animals, these stats really hit home for me.

You can’t really recycle plastic bags

It takes the average plastic shopping bag 100 years to decompose and that’s only if it’s exposed to sunlight and air (which landfill rubbish often isn’t) so that plastic bag you chucked in the bin last week will probably outlast us all. So, now I have a ‘dirty’ tote bag that I put shoes in, a ‘fresh food’ tote bag for any fruit and veg and a ‘dry’ tote bag for everything else.

The sea floor is pretty much plastic

Considering 12.2 million tonnes of plastic litter enter the marine environment each year, it’s no wonder that 94% of the plastic rubbish that enters the ocean ends up on the sea floor. It’s not realistic for me to think I’ll never buy another plastic bottle of water again but I can make sure I only bin it in a recycling bin and never in one that’s overflowing (as these will just end up blowing away)

Plastic is seriously unhealthy for you

Chemicals like BPA and phthalates are used to make plastics and resins and when plastic is heated up (which can happen if your plastic bottle is in the sun for example), these chemicals can leech into the contents. And, since they’re known endocrine disruptors, they can cause a whole load of health issues so I’ve traded in for a glass and stainless steel as they’re both natural elements so are free from chemicals and wholly recyclable.

Plastic cutlery and straws aren’t ever recycled

I’m normally the first person to choose a plastic fork rather than a metal one. But, as it’s too small to recycle, it just adds to our ever-growing landfill. There is, however, a way around it. If you store it in a plastic takeaway container and recycle the whole thing, that works – but otherwise, just choose metal cutlery or invest in a stainless steel foldable spork! And, after finding out that the UK and US use almost 550 million straws a day – most of which end up in the ocean or take 200 years to break down into toxic particles – I’m all about refusing the straw, or using reusable stainless steel, glass and bamboo straws (I got mine from eco straws.)

What I bought to start my no plastic life

BKR glass bottle, £30

Pukka bamboo coffee cup, £8.99

Cleeve Outdoors stainless steel folding spork, £2.49

All Naturals soap, £4.99

Myroo facial cloth and cleanser, £27

Friction Free Shaving razor, from £5

Kjaer Weis make-up, from £20

Woobamboo! biodegradable silk floss, from £4.15

The verdict?

Heartbroken by what I learnt we’re doing to the environment and wildlife (as well as to ourselves), I finally saw just how unnecessary so much of my disposable plastic use was so, not to sound like a poster but really, it’ amazing how much a difference we can all make by refusing, reducing, reusing, repurposing and recycling everything we can.

Tyrion and Jaime Gave Us Yet Another Hint About That Cersei Prophecy on Game of Thrones

Warning: The post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones.

Who will kill Cersei Lannister? The question has weighed heavily on the Game of Thrones’ universe ever since Maggy, a fortune teller, delivered a prophecy to Cersei when she was a child. The show’s fifth season shows Maggy delivering three predictions, including that Cersei would be replaced by a younger and more beautiful queen.

Helen Sloan—HBO

But in George R. R. Martin’s books, Maggy adds one more crucial prediction: “When your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.”

Valonqar is High Valyrian for “little brother.” Over the years there has been widespread speculation about who the valonqar could be, with most people pointing to one of Cersei’s two little brothers. One is Tyrion, her constant nemesis who has been itching to kill her for several seasons, and another is Jaime, her lover and twin born minutes after her. Both of them have recently been marked by Cersei: she sent Bronn to kill them with a crossbow after they both defected to serve Daenerys in Winterfell.

However, it’s not specified whether the valonqar refers to her younger brother or simply any younger brother. This ambiguity means that Westeros’ other powerful younger brothers–including the Hound, Jon Snow, Bran, Arya wearing someone else’s face, Euron, or even Cersei’s unborn baby–could be candidates to bring her down.

But “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the most recent episode of Game of Thrones slyly provides two hints that point to Tyrion, the most obvious option, being the valonqar. In the show’s opening moments, Jaime stands before the powers of Winterfell, who decide whether or not to set him free. When Tyrion vouches for Jaime’s trustworthiness, Daenerys responds by echoing the words of Maggy: “Perhaps he trusts his little brother to defend him, right up to the moment he slits my throat.”

After Brienne’s unwavering words of support lead Jaime to walk free, he joins Tyrion on the battlements of Winterfell; they talk about the relationships with Cersei and their likely impending deaths at the hands of the White Walkers. As is often the case with Tyrion, he delivers a cheeky joke that also contains kernels of truth:

At least Cersei won’t get to murder me. I’m sure I’ll feel some satisfaction denying her that pleasure while I’m being ripped apart by dead men. Maybe after I’m dead, I’ll march down to King’s Landing and rip her apart.

That would certainly be a grim realization of the prophesy: a zombified Tyrion, marching to King’s Landing alongside thousands of other wights, and killing Cersei not out of revenge or self-protection but an unconscious lust for death. This theory will likely either be set into motion or debunked in the next episode–which will cover the Battle of Winterfell.

#Over40: A Guide To Law Of Attraction

Whether you are one of the people who believes in Law of Attraction or one of the people who don’t – you are entirely right. Because law of attraction in its essence is based entirely on what you consistently believe. If you remember all the buzz around the movie The Secret years ago, it was based on Law of Attraction principles.

But it’s no secret anymore if it ever was. The concept of law of attraction is not religion, but most religions echo its practices. Or, more accurately, law of attraction reworks many religious principles into the secular realm, even though many Law of Attraction proponents were religious themselves and used religion to illustrate LOA principles.

Here’s our guide to how it works and how you can improve your life using its principles.

LAW OF ATTRACTION IS NOT MAGIC, IT’S MINDSET

Stated simply the law of attraction is that like attracts like. It is, in essence, exactly what the scripture, Proverbs 23:7 – “As a man thinketh, so shall he be – is talking about. To paraphrase the old United Negro College Fund commercial – a mind is a terrible thing to waste – on negative thoughts. Law of attraction says that in order to manifest great things in your life, you must set your mind to the feeling of having them, even before they show up in reality.

If your life is not reflecting the things you want, it’s because your mindset is not allowing them to happen. Skeptics insist that you can’t simply manifest great things in your mind, but in fact, if you read the success stories of just about anyone with wealth, fame or just a great life they are happy with, most of them will tel you that it began as an idea or the certainty that those things could happen. Whatever you focus on, expands. So if you spend all of your time thinking about what you don’t have and what you don’t want, that’s all you will ever have. But if you change your mindset to appreciating what you do have and imagining all the things you want becoming a reality, then that’s what will happen.

THERE’S NOTHING SPECIAL YOU HAVE TO DO OR BUY

Law of attraction is all in your head. Literally. It’s about meeting the world with the most positive thoughts, no matter what is going on around you. That’s it. But no one said that it’s easy. Our self-talk is often completely negative. Some of us can’t be convinced no matter what, that there is any good in our current situations or that anything at all can be changed via words and thoughts. Those people’s situations are likely to stay the same, because that’s what is most active in their minds. Do you know someone who mostly always has drama in their life? To suggest that they change their mindset is almost always pointless as they are married to the idea that their lives are uncontrollable.

Law of attraction does not suggest that you take any action other than altering your habitual patterns of thinking. For example, if every day you lead with hating your job – driving to work thinking about how much you hate it, thinking about it at lunch break, telling everyone you know how much you hate it, it’s unlikely you’ll experience any improvement. But if you approach the situation by being grateful you have income, by finding the one good thing about it (its close to a Starbucks, your best friend lives nearby, the security guard makes you laugh every day) you will either be motivated to start looking for a job with more things you like, or the job you previously hated might become more tolerable. As author Wayne W. Dyer once said “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” He was talking about law of attraction

START WITH MEDITATION

Author/speaker/teacher Esther Hicks recommends meditation to help achieve the mindset you need for law of attraction to work in your life. Hicks, who says she receives messages through a spiritual being named Abraham that she passes on to the public, says you can reach needed clarity via meditation. Meditation can help you not only get clarity about what you truly want, it can help calm your mind and drown out your most negative inner voices. You can meditate for as little as 5 minutes a day and you can do so through apps or YouTube videos that offer all kinds of guided meditations.

Scouted: Bearaby Launches the Tree Napper, a Weighted Blanket Made from Wood Pulp-Derived Fabric

Just when you thought you hit peak weighted blanket, Bearaby comes and changes everything. In honor of Earth Day, the weighted blanket brand has debuted the Tree Napper, a weighted blanket made exclusively from TENCEL Lycocell, a fabric derived from the wood pulp of eucalyptus trees.

While the original Bearaby Napper was made from naturally weighted vegan cotton yarn (unlike the synthetic or glass beads like weighted blankets), the Tree Napper takes things one step further. The wide-looped woven design is “produced through an environmentally responsible closed-loop process that uses ten times less water than traditional fabrics” according to the brand’s press release. Now, the Bearaby Napper is not only the best-looking weighted blanket on the market, but it’s also environmentally-friendly.

The Tree Napper will come in three weights: 15 pounds, 20 pounds, and 25 pounds (it’s recommended you use one that’s 10% of your body weight) and will come in four gorgeous summer hues: Hibiscus, Lavender, Sunflower, and May Lily. Priced between $ 249 and $ 279 depending on weight, the Tree Napper is a statement piece not just for its looks but also for its eco-conscious design. The modern pattern isn’t just for aesthetic either—the woven design and lightweight eucalyptus fabric make the blanket breathable.

Kenya Moore Returns To TV In New Netflix Series

Kenya Moore is set to make her return to the small screen as she has signed on to join the cast of the new Netflix series Family Reunion.

The comedy is described as a “multi-generational, multi-camera comedy” show starring Tia Mowry and Loretta Devine.

The 20-episode series is penned entirely by Black writers,” Deadline reports.

The publication also shared a breakdown of the plot:The African-American family sitcom, which is penned entirely by Black writers, stars Mowry as Cocoa McKellan, a free-spirited, fun, conscious mother from Seattle. When she and her former football-playing husband Moz and their four children travel from their home in the big city to the small town of Columbus, Georgia for the McKellan Family Reunion, they get to know an extended family they didn’t even realize they were missing.

Devine plays the loving but strict matriarch of the family, M’Dear.

“We look forward to bringing families together to enjoy the hilarious and heartwarming stories of this multi-generational American family living together and discovering the importance of connecting with their roots,” said Melissa Cobb, VP of Kids and Family at Netflix.

“Meg DeLoatch has created a warm, funny and memorable extended family that we believe will resonate with audiences around the world and she has assembled an incredibly talented all-black writers room to authentically portray these characters and their journey.”

Details about Moore’s role are still a bit of a mystery, but the project does reunite her with Devine. They last worked together on Waiting to Exhale. The former RHOA star hit up social media to share a pic of her and Loretta together on the set.

“Nothing but love for this hilarious, talented, gracious and beautiful soul [Loretta]. We first worked together on “Waiting To Exhale” which was my first movie role. Just a joy to work with,” Moore captioned the image.

Devine added in a statement: “I am so blessed to be part of this new and exciting moment in time that will touch and bring laughter, smiles, and joy to everyone who sees it.”

“I’m so excited to return to television, especially working with Netflix, and I can’t wait for everyone to see Family Reunion,” said Mowry. “I know my fans are going to love it!”

Amazon Fashion Takes All the Fun Out of Clothes Shopping—and Customers Love It

Last Sunday morning, I woke up to a message in my friends’ group chat with a link to the Saturday Night Live skit “Fashion Coward.” It was a parody commercial for a store that caters to people who hate shopping. At Fashion Coward, customers can easily buy “clothes that suggest the general idea of a person.”

Racks are stocked with “brown sweaters, navy shirts, pants for the leg, and one black dress that says, ‘Keep it moving.’” The joke’s punchline is “It’s just Ann Taylor,” an easy jab at the much-maligned chain of business-casual basics.

But Ann Taylor has some competition in Amazon, where women flock to purchase utilitarian, good-enough clothing with as much passion as they would buying a new toilet brush.

Waste less food for a healthy planet

If you want to do a good turn for the health of your community and your planet, consider the issue of food waste.

The National Resources Defense Council reports that up to 40% of food in the United States is never eaten, and the largest source of waste is people throwing out food at home. Wasted food is a significant contributor to climate change because greenhouse gasses are produced in the growing, processing, packaging, and transporting of wasted food, and more gasses are released as wasted food deteriorates in landfills.

How hospitals are helping

Hospitals often end up with extra food because patient meals are typically ordered the day before they’re needed, but patients can be discharged early, or needs can change. Kaiser Permanente hospitals have a history of reducing food waste by working to ensure that patient meal projections are as accurate as possible. But when there’s excess food, we partner with nonprofits to ensure that it doesn’t go to waste.

Nearly every Kaiser Permanente hospital in California works with a nonprofit partner or partners to rescue unserved perishable food and give it to people in need. By 2020, all California hospitals will be required by state law to make significant reductions in organic waste, including food waste.

At the Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center last year, nearly 14,000 pounds of unserved food was picked up by Meals on Wheels on weekdays and No Time to Waste on weekends. Elizabeth Bailey, director of Food and Nutrition for the hospital, described the program as a point of pride for the whole department.

“We all feel good that the food is going to great causes and we’re keeping it out of the trash and landfill,” she said.

Fighting food insecurity

The California Association of Food Banks estimates that 1 in 8 Californians struggle with food insecurity — which means they don’t have regular access to the food they need to be healthy and active.

Jan Villarante, director, Kaiser Permanente National Nutrition Service, said the hospital food redistribution programs are helping.

“The meals we redistribute in the community are of excellent nutritional quality with lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Plus, much of our produce is locally sourced, so that helps local growers and the environment, too.”

Last year, Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Southern California donated more than 72,000 pounds of recovered food to local nonprofit groups. John Yamamoto, who serves as vice president for Community Health in Southern California, said the donations are another significant way the organization works to improve health and equity in the community.
