A 30-year-old nurse and single mother with $ 150,000 in student loan debt received an absolutely life-changing surprise on Wednesday.

Jasmin Ford was surprised with the news that Fifth Third Bank was going to be paying off her student loans entirely. “I still can’t find the words,” the mother said on Thursday. “I’m off work again today and I’m just sort of pacing around and restless because I know my life is going to change.”

Ford is a Chicago native and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She received her bachelor’s degree in 2011 and then became a nurse three years later after going back to school for her nursing degree. She finished her Master’s degree in nursing in 2015. With no family assistance, she said she had to take out student loans in order to cover necessities like food and rent in addition to tuition.

“I could not foresee when I’d be able to pay it off,” Ford said of her debt. “I just knew this was going to be a part of my life as long as I was alive unless there was some significant change, which — wow.” Ford said she now envisions being able to use her nursing career to give back even more and “pay it forward.”

“I just imagine being able to spend more time physically with my family, not having to hustle, having mental freedom and with that, some spiritual freedom,” she said. “I can open myself to more experiences, opportunities and just be able to sit and be with my thoughts and be able to pursue what it is I came to do.”

She also said that life will change for her son, Caleb, who is going to turn 2 in February. While struggling to pay back her debt, Ford worked nearly every day of the week at two jobs. “His life will be totally different,” she said. “I’m so happy and so proud that I’m able to offer that to him more than anything else because he deserves it.”

Jasmine Ford was surprised by Fifth Third Bank after being chosen to participate in a documentary that the Ohio-based bank was producing on the student loan debt. She didn’t know she was being awarded $ 150K for her loans, because she thought the film crew was simply coming back to her home on Wednesday to shoot some additional video.

Next year, Fifth Third Bank plans to pay off student debt for two more people. The bank will pay off loans of up to $ 39,000 for two users of Fifth Third Momentum, the bank’s student loan initiative that rounds up a customer’s debit card purchases and applies it to their student loan balance.

Judge Strikes Down ACA Putting Law In Legal Peril — Again

The future of the Affordable Care Act is threatened — again — this time by a ruling Friday from a federal district court judge in Texas.

Judge Reed C. O’Connor struck down the law, siding with a group of 18 Republican state attorneys general and two GOP governors who brought the case. O’Connor said the tax bill passed by Congress last December effectively rendered the entire health law unconstitutional.

That tax measure eliminated the penalty for not having insurance. An earlier Supreme Court decision upheld the ACA based on the view that the penalty was a tax and thus the law was valid because it relied on appropriate power allowed Congress under the Constitution. O’Connor’s decision said that without that penalty, the law no longer met that Constitutional test.

“In some ways, the question before the Court involves the intent of both the 2010 and 2017 Congresses,” O’Connor wrote in his 55-page decision. “The former enacted the ACA. The latter sawed off the last leg it stood on.”

The decision came just hours before the end of open enrollment for ACA plans in most states that use the federal Healthcare.gov insurance exchange. It is not expected that the ruling will impact the coverage for those people — the final decision will likely not come until the case reaches the Supreme Court again.

Seema Verma, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which oversees those insurance exchanges, said in a tweet: “The recent federal court decision is still moving through the courts, and the exchanges are still open for business and we will continue with open enrollment. There is no impact to current coverage or coverage in a 2019 plan.”

The 16 Democratic state attorneys general who intervened in the case to defend the health law immediately vowed to appeal.

“The ACA has already survived more than 70 unsuccessful repeal attempts and withstood scrutiny in the Supreme Court,” said a statement from California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. “Today’s misguided ruling will not deter us: our coalition will continue to fight in court for the health and wellbeing of all Americans.”

It is all but certain the case will become the third time the Supreme Court decides a constitutional question related to the ACA. In addition to upholding the law in 2012, the court rejected another challenge to the law in 2015.

It is hard to overstate what would happen to the nation’s health care system if the decision is ultimately upheld. The Affordable Care Act touched almost every aspect of health care, from Medicare and Medicaid to generic biologic drugs, the Indian Health Service, and public health changes like calorie counts on menus.

The case, Texas v United States, was filed in February. The plaintiffs argued that because the Supreme Court upheld the ACA in 2012 as a constitutional use of its taxing power, the elimination of the tax makes the rest of the law unconstitutional.

In June, the Justice Department announced it would not fully defend the law in court. While the Trump administration said it did not agree with the plaintiffs that the tax law meant the entire ACA was unconstitutional, it said that the provisions of the law guaranteeing that people with preexisting health conditions could purchase coverage at the same price as everyone else were so inextricably linked to the tax penalty that they should be struck.

The administration urged the court to declare those provisions invalid beginning Jan. 1, 2019. That is the day the tax penalty for not having insurance disappears.

The protections for people with preexisting conditions was one of the top health issues in the midterm elections in November. While the issue mostly played to the advantage of Democrats, one of the Republican plaintiffs, Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, defeated Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill. Another plaintiff, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, lost to Democratic incumbent Sen. Joe Manchin.

President Donald Trump was quick to take a victory lap, and pressed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and the presumed incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to fix the problem. He tweeted Friday night that “As I predicted all along, Obamacare has been struck down as an UNCONSTITUTIONAL disaster! Now Congress must pass a STRONG law that provides GREAT healthcare and protects pre-existing conditions. Mitch and Nancy, get it done!”

But congressional leaders were quick to point out that the suit is far from over.

“The ruling seems to be based on faulty legal reasoning and hopefully it will be overturned,” said a statement from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Many legal experts agreed with that. “This is insanity in print, and it will not stand up on appeal,” tweeted University of Michigan Law School Professor Nicholas Bagley, an expert in health law.

Even some conservatives were left scratching their heads. “Congress acted last year to repeal the mandate, but leave everything else in place and the courts should have deferred to that,” tweeted former congressional GOP aide Chris Jacobs.

Five Revelations From ‘Octomom’ Nadya Suleman’s New York Times Interview

Almost 10 years after she made headlines for giving birth to octuplets, Nadya Suleman is speaking out about her life today and the mistakes she made in her past.

The woman known as Octomom, 43, spoke to The New York Times on Saturday, December 15, a few weeks before the six boys and two girls, conceived via in vitro fertilization, turn 10 in January. “They’re the only surviving eight octuplets in the history of mankind,” she said proudly.

Suleman, who has six other children, also through IVF, told the newspaper that she is writing a book that she has been working on for 13 years. “That’s why I want to do this interview,” she explained. “I’ve been writing this manuscript since graduate school.”

Read on for five revelations from her interview.

She and her 14 kids live in a three-bedroom townhouse in California.

The Times reports that the octuplets, who are small for their age, are polite, and like their mom are vegan. Like their siblings, they help out with the cooking and because there are so many in the household, they eat in shifts, while some sleep on the couch.

She has been left with painful injuries from the pregnancy.

“I was misled by my doctor,” she told the paper of being implanted with so many embryos by Dr. Kamrava, who has since lost his medical license in the U.S. and left the country. Suleman, who stated that she turned to IVF because she couldn’t conceive naturally, said she didn’t know she was carrying so many babies and had only wanted twins. The pregnancy took a heavy toll on her body, stretching her belly out so much that it broke her ribs. “My back is broken because of the last pregnancy,” she said, admitting that the injury was made worse by years of running half-marathons. “I have irreparable sacral damage. And I have peripheral neuropathy. I haven’t felt my toes on my foot on the right side for many years, and my fingers are numb all the time every day. The pregnancy caused it.”

She is honest with her kids about her past, which includes drug abuse and a sex tape.

Suleman, who battled an addiction to alcohol and Xanax for two years, spent time in rehab in 2012. “When you’re pretending to be something you’re not, at least for me, you end up falling on your face,” she said of her sudden fame, which saw her appear in a 2012 sex tape, Octomom Home Alone. She claimed to The Times that her manager forced her to do the video by threatening to report her to welfare for fraud. “We talk about everything,” she said of discussing her past with her brood. “They know, they went through it with me. It’s a huge weight lifted off of all of them when I went back to who I was. We were struggling financially, but it was such a blessing to be able to be free from that. Those were chains.”

She doesn’t date.

The full-time counselor, who told the newspaper that she relies on government assistance and “international photo shoots,” insisted that she “never wanted the attention” that came with her record-breaking pregnancy. She revealed that she isn’t seeing anyone and doesn’t have contact with the men who fathered her children. One man was the sperm donor for the octuplets and she said that “maybe the kids will meet him at 18.”

She doesn’t often go out with all 14 kids.

The family’s day begins at 6:20 a.m. with her driving the kids to school in a Ford E-350 Super Duty van. After school there’s cleaning and chores, with the kids helping out with cooking, and then the clan is in bed by 8:30 p.m. On Saturdays they have family fun nights with vegan junk food in front of the TV. Her eldest daughter, Amerah, 16, told The Times that the 15 of them seldom step out together. “She’ll get anxiety, everyone staring, so she’ll take whoever’s behaving the best. There’s ups and downs.”

Ariana Grande, Kanye West Feud Over Mental Health Turns Serious as Pete Davidson Posts Concerning Message

A Twitter spat between Ariana Grande and Kanye West over mental health took a serious turn on Saturday after Pete Davidson, an SNL star and Grande’s ex-fiance, posted a message on social media that some took as suicidal.

The tiff between the two musicians began when Grande waded into a feud between West and the music star Drake yesterday.

Drake and West and have notoriously had a contentious relationship since at least 2011, according to ELLE. Their feud was apparently reignited in September, when Drake made a snide reference to the sneakers West designs in a song. Then on December 13, Drake requested sampling a portion of Kanye’s song in one of his compositions. Soon afterward, Kanye launched into a Twitter rant that lasted more than 100 tweets.

Grande responded to the very public dispute with a teasing tweet of her own.

“Guys, I know there are grown men arguing online rn but miley and I dropping our beautiful, new songs tonight so if y’all could please jus behave for just like a few hours so the girls can shine that’d be sick thank u,” Grande wrote on Twitter, which she later deleted.

West did not take kindly to Grande’s intrusion and suggested that she was inserting herself into the beef to promote her new song, “Imagine,” which released Friday.

Grande then apologized for being insensitive about West’s mental health, but fired back at him for suggesting she was promoting herself.

“With all due respect, I don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. period. I was making a comment ab what men were doing at the time v.s. women. It was a joke which I understand now was probably insensitive. I apologize if I was in any way triggering and I hope u feel well today,” Grande tweeted. She later deleted her tweet.

This morning, Davidson appeared to side with West in an Instagram post.

“Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against [sic] mental health,” his post read. “I can’t explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this. We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I’m seriously disgusted.”

A few hours later, however, Davidson published another message that struck an even more serious tone.

“I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last,” Davidson wrote.

Davidson, who has spoken out frequently about having bipolar disorder and suicidal tendencies, appeared to suggest that he was feeling suicidal. Soon afterward, he deleted both messages.

Earlier this month, Davidson wrote on Instagram:

“I’ve been getting online bullied and in public by people for 9 months. I’ve spoken about BPD and being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don’t want to be on this earth,” he wrote. “No matter how hard the internet or anyone tries to make me kill myself. I won’t. I’m upset I even have to say this.”

In since-deleted tweets, Grande apologized for being insensitive about mental health issues.

“Man I’m so sorry I told a dumb joke. I really didn’t mean any harm. All I want everyone to be healthy and happy. so desperately,” she tweeted.

Soon afterwards, she tweeted seemingly at Davidson: “I’m downstairs and I’m not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything. I know u have everyone u need and that’s not me, but I’m here too.”

TMZ reported that she had made her way to 30 Rock in Manhattan, where SNL is filmed, in order to try and see Davidson.

Davidson was accounted for at SNL and “fine,” according to the New York Times.

Holiday Attire for Men: What It Means & How to Wear It

The source of confusion in this dress code is that it can mean anything from cocktail attire with a festive twist to the recent vogue for ugly Christmas sweaters.

Our most general piece of advice for the holiday or festive dress code is to gravitate to the more formal end of the spectrum which we’re going to lay out today. After all, no one is ever going to fault you for looking put together. The exception to this advice, of course, is if the hosts have clearly stated that the party is going to be more extravagant and playful in nature and that ugly sweaters are expected. In that case, by all means, do loosen up and have some fun.

Ugly Christmas Sweater

Ugly Christmas Sweater

Your safest bet, of course, will always be to ask the hosts for advice directly as a gentleman always makes the effort to follow a dress code as closely as he can; to do otherwise would be an insult to your hosts. One more piece of general advice here before we dive in, keep it varied and have a few options handy, after all, it’s a busy time of year for parties and you may be invited to more than one that has a holiday or festive dress code to it so having a few options at your disposal will never be a bad thing.

Tartan adds a bit of playfulness to any outfit

Tartan adds a bit of playfulness to any outfit

How To Meet The Holiday Attire Dress Code Stylishly?

The simplest answer is this, think of it as being an offshoot of cocktail attire with an extra holiday touch in terms of color or some playfulness that’s incorporated into your outfit such as wearing tartan which has been an established alternative when it comes to holiday wear since at least the middle of the 20th century. Regarding color then, do feel free to incorporate some of the standard colors of the holiday season such as red and green. With that said, however, don’t go for bright and gaudy hues as these are just going to make you stand out a little bit too much. Instead, go for something subtle, understated, and elegant.

Now let’s cover today’s subject through the lens of multiple different types of holiday parties, each with differing levels of formality and cover the related dress accordingly.

Office Appropriate Festive Attire

Regarding how dressed up you should be for such an event, just take a cue from the regular day-to-day attire at your office. In other words, think of how you should dress as being a somewhat typical office outfit, maybe just a bit more relaxed and with a seasonal element to it.

White Collar Office Parties

Firstly, if you work in a traditional white collar office environment, go for something that’s appropriately conservative. For example, a suit perhaps three pieces or double-breasted in a dark color like charcoal, navy, or in midnight blue, if you’re feeling especially elegant. Along with this, you could go for a dress shirt, ideally French cuffed and probably in a pastel color as white might be just a bit too stuffy for a festive party.

Oxblood derby shoes is a great option for Festive Attire dress code

Oxblood derby shoes is a great option for Festive Attire dress code

In terms of shoes, you’ll want to keep things appropriately conservative as well so you could go for the classic black cap toe oxford or if you’re feeling just a little bit more playful, something in a very dark brown color perhaps an oxblood. You could go for something like a monk strap or something incorporating just a little bit of broguing in its design but you don’t want to get too crazy and you probably won’t want to opt for light colors like tan either. After all, if your regular office attire consists of those black oxfords, you’ll want to keep it in the neighborhood of that kind of shoe even for a party like this.

Refrain from wearing this loud Christmas tie at a white-collar office party

Refrain from wearing this loud Christmas tie at a white-collar office party

As for your accessories, the novelty tie emblazoned with huge Santa heads is probably going to be a little bit too informal for a party of this nature. Instead, you’ll want to go for something like a dark burgundy or a similarly muted hue perhaps with a slight pattern to it. Although solids are of course a safe bet. Your pocket square can be a little bit bolder in comparison to your tie and can possibly incorporate some small patterns as well. Just remember that all of the elements of your outfit should ultimately remain harmonious.

You’re likely going to have the most latitude here with your cufflinks, they can be solid metal in any shade of course and can incorporate stones or other engraved designs. This type of party is just playful enough, however, that you could also do something with miniatures, say, for example, a tiny reindeer just so long as it’s understated and subtle. Have fun with it and try to strike that ideal balance between formal and festive.

Tie bars, collar clips, and rings can also be worn as long as they are similarly understated and of course, matching your metals is always a good idea. Finally here regarding boutonnieres, something light-colored and small so as also to be understated would be an ideal choice.

Do not attempt to wear super bright colors as it may make you look clownish

Do not attempt to wear super bright colors as it may make you look clownish

Less Formal Office Parties

For a slightly less formal type of office party, we recommend that you go with a combination of sport coat and odd trousers. A patterned or textured sportcoat would be a good choice here with or without a tie. Something for example in herringbone, houndstooth, or a mottled tweed will provide a rustic quality that’s still appropriate for the season. Wearing a blazer with a tartan or other plaid pattern would be an ideal way to be seasonally appropriate, a little bit bold, and a little bit rustic all at the same time.

Opt for tweed if you are going for the rustic look

Opt for tweed if you are going for the rustic look

Finally, this would also be a great opportunity to break out something like a burgundy velvet jacket if you’re feeling especially avant-garde. Your shirt could be plain in color, either in a pastel shade or alternatively in a rich dark hue if you’re going for something a little bit more fashion-forward. Also, the shirt could feature a pattern just so long as that pattern doesn’t clash if you’ve also got one in your jacket.

Aleks Cvetkovics with denim shirt on top of a turtleneck sweater

In terms of styling and materials, choices like the Oxford cloth button down or OCBD would be appropriately semi-formal. A chambray shirt would be another good choice or alternatively, you could substitute the collared shirt altogether for something like a dark turtleneck sweater under your jacket. You can round out this look with some flannel trousers or corduroys.  As far as shoes are concerned, you could opt for something like wingtips or loafers just so long as they’re well shined.

Casual Office Parties

Our advice is largely the same as for semi-formal office parties but with a few key distinctions.

Ralph Lauren Cable Knit Cardigan Sweater

Ralph Lauren Cable Knit Cardigan Sweater

First of all, you can feel free to swap out the sport coat with a cable knit pullover or a cardigan sweater in a warm color. Alternatively, a fair isle sweater or sweater vest will allow you to stand out a little bit more while still looking rustic and traditional.

Allen Edmonds Chukka boots paired with dark denim jeans

In addition to flannel trousers and corduroys, a casual office party would also be an appropriate time to break out dark denim or perhaps even colored chinos if you’re feeling especially bold.

Crazy Christmas Socks

Crazy Christmas Socks

Finally, you can add an accent with some brightly colored dress socks or maybe incorporate your crazy socks featuring Santa and his reindeer here and you can round out the look with some informal shoes or perhaps a dress boot.

Residential /Private Holiday Parties

SRS in a brown turtleneck sweater

SRS in a brown turtleneck sweater

Now let’s briefly cover some advice on what to wear to a holiday or festive party given in a residential or otherwise similarly private setting. In the broad strokes, you’re going to want to keep things a little bit more relaxed for a home party than you would for an office party but the breakdown we’ve just given for three different formality levels of office parties can still hold mostly true here as well. In other words, all of the suggestions we gave for specific combinations of garments still hold true for home parties as they did for office parties but when we gave you more than one option in some of our breakdowns, you would here opt for some of the less formal of those options.

SRS wearing a denim shirt with a sport coat

SRS wearing a denim shirt with a sport coat

For example, at a semi-formal or mid-level holiday house party, you could perhaps go for the turtleneck sweater before going for the button-down. Remember, the bottom line for house parties is always the dress code that’s printed on the invitation and/or the personal advice of the hosts. If the party takes place during the holiday season but the invitation says black-tie, wear a tuxedo and leave that tweed sport coat at home.

CONCLUSION

While the holiday or festive dress code covers a wide range of levels of formality, it doesn’t have to be a source of anxiety. For a party at work, take a cue from your regular office attire and add a twist or two and for a residential party, take your cue from the invitation and the advice of the hosts and feel free to be just a little bit more relaxed and playful and yes, if ugly sweaters are expected, do loosen up and feel free to have a little bit of fun.

What sorts of combinations have you worn to holiday parties in the past? Share with us in the comments section below.

Alexander McQueen Missing From Paris Men’s Week

SHOW BUSINESS: Big acts missing from the official schedule of Paris Men’s Week in January will include Alexander McQueen. The house plans to switch to a series of intimate events as its new presentation format, WWD has learned. The first will take place in London in May for the fall 2019 season. “Intrinsically connected to the bespoke tailoring heritage of Alexander McQueen men’s wear, these events will be central to the evolution of the house’s commitment to the championing of creativity, craftsmanship and innovation,” the brand said. The house moved to showing in Paris in June 2017 after having shown by appointment in Milan and London in previous seasons.
As expected, Lanvin, which recently parted ways with its men’s creative director Lucas Ossendrijver, is also missing from the lineup, according to the Chambre Syndicale which released its provisional schedule for the week on Friday.
Maison Margiela will also sit out the Paris men’s shows this season as it undergoes a strategic review under chief executive officer Riccardo Bellini, who joined the company in March. The house is believed to be aligning its men’s ready-to-wear collection more closely with its women’s line and Artisanal couture collection. Maison Margiela creative director John Galliano oversees

The dangerous myths that prevent me from getting the endometriosis care I need

The dangerous myths that prevent me from getting the endometriosis care I need

The dangerous myths that prevent me from getting the endometriosis care I need

I’m sick almost every day, gently poking my distended stomach wondering when my pelvis is going to explode. I have debilitating cramps that begin mid-cycle, accompanied by nausea and a fever that breaks around the time I begin to bleed. At age 26, my OBGYN suspects that I have endometriosis, a disease in which uterine lining grows outside of the uterus, attaching to other organs. It has no known cure. In his plush Upper East Side office, he asks if I’ve considered getting pregnant; he tells me that it’s the best way to treat it. I’ve just opened my first adult savings account and don’t have a boyfriend, so no, I haven’t thought about giving birth to a child. I also don’t yet know his claim that pregnancy is a “cure” for endometriosis is a myth.

That year, unable to pull myself out of bed most mornings, I leave my life in N.Y.C. to live with my father in Georgia; he can add me to his company’s health insurance plan. I had been temping in Manhattan and coat checking at night, but these types of jobs don’t offer health benefits. My new doctor refers to my situation as a “working woman’s disease,” and explains that he can’t diagnose me until I have surgery. An ultrasound cannot detect the disease.

For over 6,000 years, women with heavy cramping, pelvic pain, or pain during intercourse have been dismissed by our patriarchal society—so much so that painful periods have been normalized. Doctors do not consider these symptoms medical red flags, but hysterical complaints by psychologically inadequate women with low thresholds for pain.

Even doctors that do recognize women’s pain as a potentially serious condition are challenged by the lack of research and resources available.

“Endometriosis is a chronic disease, and with little treatment options, women can suffer for decades. The symptoms are vague and can be associated with other disorders like bowel disease. There are no laboratory evaluations that can be done,” says OBGYN Alyse Margaret Kelly-Jones. According to The Endometriosis Foundation of America, it takes approximately ten years for many of the estimated 200 million endo sufferers worldwide to be diagnosed.

My doctor discourages me from having a laparoscopy to remove the adhesions and endometrioma—cysts filled with dark brown blood formed from tissue similar to uterine lining—that have likely migrated outside my womb. Even after surgery, there is no way to prevent it from attacking my insides. So, I wait while collecting a pharmacy of pastel painkillers with too many side effects to take while working or driving or being awake. My treatment plan consists of extra-strength Tylenol, a heating pad, and sleep. On one hand, I count the number of good days I have each month. I pretend every day to be okay. My home in New York feels like a distant memory.

A few months after my doctor’s visit, I am rushed to the hospital for a ruptured cyst after an evening shift at the restaurant where I work. Now, they say I need surgery. The diagnosis is Stage IV endometriosis due to the large number of implants and endometrial cysts that were attached to my digestive tract, pelvic cavity, and rectum. After surgery, I’m told there is tissue left inside me because it was unsafe to remove it. I get to keep it.

Before the disease attaches itself to my insides again, the doctors go over my options: pregnancy (even though more than half of infertile women have symptoms of endometriosis), hormone injections that cause premature menopause, a hysterectomy.

I feel like I am in the dark ages: Have a baby now or remove the organ necessary to have children in the future. I read The Endometriosis Sourcebook for answers, but it is a mystifying disease with little money allocated to understand—or even agree upon—what kind of disease it is and what causes it. Almost all endometriosis websites include a myth versus fact section. While this may sound like progress, it’s a small win.

The myths are just as pervasive and toxic as the illness itself.

I move to Los Angeles because it’s sunny every day and I dream that the health-obsessed city will rub off on me. It’s only in photos that I notice how sick I look, which is curious to others because I don’t “act” sick. As a child, the gauge of sickness was the rise of silver mercury in a thermometer. I’ve learned that there are key symptoms that people respond to: vomiting, fever, broken bones, bruises. What do you do when all of your broken pieces are on the inside? Sometimes vomiting is really nausea; fever is the chills. I call my symptoms chronic fatigue. But am I more tired than a mother with three kids working two jobs? Who isn’t tired?

I shame myself into hiding my pain, but secrets have consequences. My consequences take the deformed shape of deep scar tissue. After my second surgery, they tell me it’s now or never for children. I now have a live-in boyfriend, but he is not ready. I’m not sure if I am either, but I know I want children, so it must be now. My pain is significantly reduced with Chinese herbs and acupuncture, but when I lose my job, I struggle to keep up with weekly sessions. I return to bottles of burnt orange pills and electric heat, and I am unable to carry a pregnancy to term. We miscarry more than once and turn our spare room into an office.

A Twitter search for #endometriosis yields approximately 2,000 posts in a week; the majority are declarations of excruciating pain or stories of not being believed. Images include a crying uterus and selfies in hospital beds. Hashtags like #endometriosissucks, #endometriosisisreal, and #endometriosisresearch are calls for support, solidarity, and action. @xMelissaR04 sums up what our insides feel like: “On my way to work & it feels like Freddy Krueger has his fingers in my uterus ”

In online support groups, the misinformation that young women receive from their physicians feels criminal to me. High school girls are studying for their driver’s exam while getting hysterectomies. After undergoing eight surgeries, Lena Dunham recently chose to have one, but since endometriosis grows over the uterine lining, she still may experience pain. Unlike Dunham, I imagine that these girls may not have the opportunity to get a second opinion. SpeakEndo.com notes that teens’ endometriosis symptoms are the most likely to be written off as bad cramps.

Founder of Seckin Endometriosis Treatment Center (SEC) and endometriosis excision specialist surgeon Dr. Seckin has a different definition of endometriosis. On his website, he writes, “This is endometriosis, menstrual periods that are literally stuck inside of a woman’s body. The implants can grow deep and wide, spreading and clinging to her uterus, appendix, rectum, ovaries, intestines, leg nerves, and other parts of the pelvic region. They are like leeches that attach to, reproduce on, and grow on whatever internal organs they find. They are similar to a slow-growing cancer that invades the organs in the pelvis. In some rare cases, they can spread to the diaphragm, lungs, kidneys, or brain.”

I have been battling endometriosis for over twenty years. It’s the longest and most toxic relationship I’ve ever had. A relationship I can’t escape.

Last month, I fastened my feet into another pair of stirrups, hopeful that a young doctor may have a more progressive approach. He locates a sizable cyst on my left ovary and a sac of fluid above it. “You haven’t been treating it, so I suspect that your endometriosis has grown back. Have you tried Lupron?” he asks me.

I know that several pharmaceutical companies who manufacture Lupron are being sued by a woman whose body attacked her bones after just two injections. “I know many people who’ve had negative experiences with it,” I tell him, which is the truth. He shrugs his shoulders and tells me that getting pregnant would be the best of both worlds. I have no idea what two worlds he is referring to.

While it wasn’t right for him to blame me, I haven’t been militant with my pain management. I stopped going to acupuncture, and even though I subscribe to a healthy vegetarian diet, yoga, and exercise, I’ve only dabbled in holistic treatments such as CBD or hemp oil, Reiki, and essential oils. The truth is, when I feel good, I want to forget that endometriosis exists.

I should have been better, I think—but then I stop myself.

Is this what it means for women to be advocates of their own healthcare? Does it rest on our shoulders to cure ourselves? There may be better ways for me to manage pain, but I didn’t ‘make’ my endometriosis grow back.

As I was writing this essay, I ended up in the hospital for severe pelvic pain, nausea, and the chills.

My blood work results appeared as emails on my phone as I sat in the waiting room. After watching every patient disappear behind the double doors, I asked the receptionist why I was being seen last. “Patients are categorized by the severity of their condition,” she said with a forced smile. I wanted to read her a recent article that cites endometriosis as one of the most painful chronic illnesses. Instead, I nodded and waited my turn.

“The cyst and fluid sac are gone. They must have ruptured,” the ER doctor tells me. “Endometriosis is a terrible condition; I am so sorry that we can’t help you.” I am not an emergency and I can’t be helped at the ER.

“The good news is that your vitals and blood work are great,” he says. “And your pregnancy test was negative.” I winced, knowing that I am nearing the end of my fertility window. I’m glad that he doesn’t pretend to know how to treat me or tell me that I could have cured myself. At least he doesn’t prescribe me a myth. Instead, he prints out the names of five OBGYNS who may have more experience with endometriosis. “They are excellent doctors,” he says, and I believe him because he believes me.

While new marketing campaigns urge women to “speak out” about their symptoms, history has shown that women who speak out are not believed.

We are not in the dark about endometriosis because women ignore their symptoms; we are ignored because women’s bodies are devalued.

This treatment by doctors has reprehensible effects. It falls on our shoulders to raise awareness and dispel myths that pregnancy and hysterectomies cure endometriosis. We need to band together to demand more studies, more funding, more understanding of women’s bodies. After all, it is our bodies that give life.

Gucci to Host Event During January’s Fashion Week in Milan

MILAN — Gucci will cap off the upcoming Men’s Fashion Week in January with a performance event here.
As Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana president Carlo Capasa revealed during a press conference on Wednesday presenting the schedule of the city’s upcoming fashion week, the fashion label — which will return to Milan in February with a coed show after it decamped to Paris last September for one season — will host the “Motus presents MDLSX with Silvia Calderoni” performance event at its Gucci hub headquarters on Jan. 14. The performance, which will be produced by independent theater company Motus and directed by Enrico Casagrande and Daniela Nicolò, will blend a monologue by Calderoni and video projections exploring the notion of gender identity in a play inspired by the 2003 novel “Middlesex” by American writer Jeffrey Eugenides. Capasa dubbed the event “not to be missed,” noting how important it is for Gucci to be part of the official schedule.
Men’s Fashion Week will run Jan. 11 to 14 and while, as reported, the Giorgio Armani brand is the latest to join the likes of Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Salvatore Ferragamo to skip the January shows to host a coed runway event in February, Emporio Armani

Is ‘The Office’ the Most Popular Show on Netflix?

Paul Drinkwater/NBC

Earlier this month, Netflix narrowly dodged a full-blown mutiny by renewing Friends, the celebrated NBC sitcom. And the sheer size of the deal—one-year, $ 100 million—for exclusive streaming rights to the show’s 10 seasons was an eye-opener. After all, treasured though it may be, Friends isn’t the most popular already-aired show available on Netflix.

That would be The Office.

“I believe it’s the No. 1 most-popular acquired show on Netflix… there are millions of streams of those episodes,” NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt told New York magazine in September. “I believe that Netflix has helped make The Office extraordinarily popular, and more popular than it was when it was on the network. And they pay us a lot of money for it. If we knew how popular it was going to be before they made the deal, we would have asked for more money from them!”

Max Mara is Reissuing ‘Nonna’ Nancy Pelosi’s Red Power Coat

Andrew Harnik/AP

ROME—When Nancy Pelosi strolled out of the White House in her red power coat after meeting President Donald Trump last Tuesday, no one was prouder than Max Mara, the coat designer. The last time the so-called Fire Coat was on the market was in 2013, but the Italian designer was so impressed by the way Pelosi wore it, they’ve decided to bring it back.

“Max Mara is honored that U.S. House Representative @nancypelosi wore the #MaxMaraFireCoat to her recent historic meeting at the White House,” the Italian company wrote in an Instagram post. “A #MaxMara coat is a year on year companion, designed to last a lifetime. This boule shaped, funnel collar coat represents lasting values and projects both personal strength and glamour.”

The winter coat, which sold under the name Glamis in Italy, will be reintroduced in 2019 in a variety of colors, including Pelosi’s favorite fire red. Pelosi also famously put on her Armani sunglasses when she left the oval office meeting.

Review: how artrepublic Brighton celebrated its 25th anniversary year

From local events and big-name exhibitions to taking art onto Brighton’s streets, here are artrepublic’s highlights of 2018.

Typically, as we head towards the end of a year we start to look back at all the things we’ve seen, done and accomplished over the past 12 months. What were the highs and the lows? What do we want more or less of, and what exciting plans and experiences can we carry with us into the sparkling new year? For artrepublic, this has been a truly special and spectacular year.

Our 25th anniversary year has offered up almost too many gems to mention. Early in 2018 we launched our brand-new gallery area, doubling the wall space at our Bond Street location to bring you even more of the art and artists that you love. And, with that space came a whole new events calendar, featuring monthly activities for kids hosted by our artists, evenings of edition screen printing with The Private Press (and a few more of our artists), and even some live real-life storytelling with Spark. We had a fair few parties too, with bubbles flowing to celebrate exclusive print launches, including an exclusive launch with Mark Vessey, where we were treated to a spin on the desks from legendary Brighton DJ & producer, Fatboy Slim. There were also solo exhibitions from the likes of Bruce McLean, collective showcases – taking in everything from abstraction to our Modern Masters – and even an album launch for  drum & bass legend, Friction. And that was just inside the four walls of the gallery itself.

Out in Brighton, beyond the gallery doors, our annual Art Yard Sale had people queuing round the block in the blazing sunshine, all waiting to get their hands on original art, at great prices, direct from the artists themselves. Some of the newest additions to the artrepublic family were there, right alongside some of the gallery’s veterans (not in terms of physical age, but in terms of long-held creative friendships) and, wandering among them all, was the host of our freshly-launched podcast, Art-related Nonsense, collecting stories from some of the best in the art business to share with you all. Check the first series out on iTunes.

Elsewhere on Brighton’s streets, a little later in the year, the gallery was represented in the Martlets Snail Trail with a design created for us specially by Eelus. Unlike that snail (who was very much rooted to the spot), for us this year has sped by.

The artrepublic Snail by Eelus

We’re so grateful to be able to share all this with the art lovers out there – each of you has brought something to the artrepublic story in 2018, a big thank you to you all and we look forward to seeing you at plenty more of the gallery’s events, openings and occasions in the year to come. From everyone at artrepublic Brighton, season’s greetings and we wish you a very Happy New Year.

The MCU Is Still Doing Villains All Wrong

Curious about how your favorite MCU villain ranked on our list of the 100 most popular villains of 2018? You can find out here

At the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, something monumentally crazy happened — Michael Keaton’s brilliantly portrayed Vulture lived. And not only did he live, he had a post-credits scene that teased the promise of more complicated Vulture dynamics for Pete to come.

Now, as comic nerds, this shouldn’t be such a monumental occasion to us. It happens all the time in our funny books. Good guy bests the bad guy, there’s a happy ending, and then — oh no! — the bad guy swears revenge. And then when the writers hit a wall on new ideas, they’ve got a deep bench of revenge-swearing baddies to pick from.

We are currently 463 Marvel movies in, and I’m not sure how they’ve missed the memo from the comics that they’re based on. Instead of wisely recycling, they’ve racked up quite a body count: from poor old Malekith of the Dark Elves, Ronan the Accuser, and the Abomination to Darren Cross, Obadiah Stane, and even the sweet-eyed Kaecilius.

You’ll notice that I’ve tossed the weakest of the bunch into a single bracket. We’ll get to Killmonger shortly. First, let’s focus on this random assortment of generic aliens and monsters, tech guys, and Mads Mikkelsen. I will be the first to admit that this motley crew is not the most memorable, and probably don’t need to be the hill this article will die on. And yet, this hill it shall be.

Villains Deserve Second and Third Chances

Malekith from Thor- Dark World
Malekith fell flat the first time, but he would’ve made a worthy longterm foe for Thor.

The promise of comic books means second and third chances for a character to land. Sure, Malekith and Ronan were lackluster the first time around, but they don’t have to be the next time. New filmmakers can come and breathe life into these characters. What if the Children of Thanos had been the heavy hitters of MCU past, instead of an additional new group of aliens I don’t know much about? The reveal of Squidward, Malekith, Ronan, and Abomination kneeling at the feet of Thanos and Hela would have been a pretty cool moment for audiences.

New movies mean new opportunities to give these characters new dimension, just like the heroes the movies are named for. Malekith in Thor: The Dark World is incredibly dull, but Malekith so desperate for revenge on Thor that he pledges his army to Thanos is an interesting new angle for him. I’m into it for the scene where Hela mocks his failure to destroy Asgard alone. Sometimes it just takes a change of scenery.

Returning villains also create a valuable shorthand for audiences and creators alike. Had the evil army in Avengers: Infinity War been a combined horde of Dark Elves and Chitauri, we wouldn’t have had to take that moment to adjust to an even newer generic CGI horde. Using CGI hordes we already have a connection to allows a moment of familiarity for the viewer, and an intense moment of recognition in our heroes.

It’s Time for the Turk Barrett Method

Turk Barrett Daredevil Marvel Netflix shows
The MCU needs a Turk Barrett or two.

The tech guys are equally useful to keep around. From Justin Hammer to Stane to Cross, their motivations are simple: Greed. These boys don’t always have to be the focus, but keeping them around and involved gives us a more fleshed out, living and breathing universe. Do you remember the arms dealer that wanted to steal Hank Pym’s lab in Antman and the Wasp? All respect to Walton Goggins, but no. No, you don’t. But if it had been Justin Hammer, and Sam Rockwell had danced his way into a restaurant for a meeting with Hope, the stakes go up just a little more. This is a villain with a little history and a little weight behind him.

These “not quite archnemesis” types are some of the most valuable characters a comic book universe can have. One of my favorite characters in the MCU? Turk, a D-lister at best. A nothing guy that’s just around to move drugs or sell a gun. He could have easily been 25 different faceless bad guys waiting to get punched by a Defender, but the writers saw a value in that 25 guys always being Turk. He’s a connective tissue to the Hell’s Kitchen corner of Marvel. Now, imagine Justin Hammer as the white collar Turk to the larger MCU, or Ronan as hired muscle who is happy to come after anyone in space that needs to get Accused (Accusor-ed?).

Top-Tier Threats Need Top-Tier Arcs

Hela destroying Thor's Hammer in Thor Ragnarok
Sometimes a performance is so good that it deserves to be revisited.

The archnemesis-level folks have a more clear and obvious value, and yet their toys have been cleared out of the sandbox. I’m talking hitters like Ultron, Hela, and Killmonger. Can you imagine if Magneto and Dr. Doom had been killed off in their first comic book appearances? Is there even an X-Men comic without decades of the evolution of Xavier and Magneto?

In losing these villains, we’ve robbed big-screen heroes of that same evolution. Ultron is a top-tier threat to the MCU, sure, but he’s also a constant reminder of the hubris of the Avengers that should never truly go away. I’m still waiting for him to show up in a Guardians of the Galaxy film to wipe out a solar system or three.

Hela may not have had a ton to do in Thor: Ragnarok but Cate Blanchett’s performance alone carried her into the upper echelon. And that’s the point of villains surviving: a performance like that deserves so much more. She deserves to be revisited and fleshed out. Blanchett’s god-powered homage to Eartha Kitt and Julie Newmar deserves to be an ongoing factor in Thor’s personal life and in the greater MCU.

Killmonger (and T’Challa) Deserved Better

Black Panther and Killmonger at Warrior Falls
T’Challa and Killmonger could’ve been the MCU’s Batman and Joker.

Which brings us to Killmonger. The MCU has always relied heavily on its villains being “mostly like the hero but slightly different.” It’s a frustrating trope that needs some creative attention, but they nailed it perfectly in one guy: Killmonger. He’s not just “Black Panther but evil.” He’s truly the opposite side of the same coin. He’s charismatic and tragic, and Michael B. Jordan’s performance gives you enough hope that he’s redeemable that you almost want to root for him.

All that to say that Killmonger is the MCU’s Magneto. The dance between Black Panther and Killmonger could, just like the Distinguished Competition’s bat and clown, go on forever. And while Killmonger’s end overlooking the country he had longed for his entire life was a beautiful close to that film, I argue that it was short-sighted, and that Black Panther doesn’t just need Killmonger to fight. None of these heroes just need these villains around to fight. Our heroes need Killmonger, Hela, and even the generic Darren Cross to grow and evolve.

I know a lot of folks are focusing on how undoing the snap is going to affect what our lineup of heroes is going to look like. I’m far more interested in how it changes our gallery of rogues. Marvel has the perfect chance to make like the comics and ignore death. Let’s hope they take it.

Ever since Lakewood pastor John Gray gifted his wife a $ 200,000 Lamborghini truck to celebrate their marriage vow renewal and anniversary, he’s been catching heat for it all over social media. Now he’s fighting back.

In an Instagram video taken at the celebration Sunday, Gray, now the pastor at Relentless Church in Greenville, South Carolina, led his wife to a bow-wrapped car and handed her the keys while saying “Lamborghini Urus.”

He wrote on Instagram Tuesday, “God helped me to make my wife’s dream come true. Why not? She’s made mine come true!” On Thursday in a Facebook Live video, Gray stated that vehicle was purchased with “not a nickel, not a penny” of his salary from the church or other church money.

He said he saved money for years and drew on a variety of sources financially including his second book deal and the fourth season of The Book Of John Gray, his television show on Oprah Winfrey‘s OWN network to pay for the vehicle. He also shared the story of how on his honeymoon eight years ago, he and his wife Aventer were so broke that they had to share a shrimp cocktail.

Aventer defended her husband on Sunday on Instagram saying, “I don’t see anyone screaming about how basketball players drive what they do while you paying $ $ $ to see them play in arenas and on fields. We don’t live for people! We love for God!”

She added, “[He] gives away cars, full houses of furniture, clothes off his back!”

Even Weirder Heroes and Other Things We Want to See in the ‘Spider-Verse’ Sequel

Two weeks before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse even hit theaters, Sony had already green-lit a sequel and at least one spin-off. That’s right, Sony are doubling down on their animated Spidey universe. Why wouldn’t they? The response of critics and fans has been fantastic, with many reviews quickly praising the movie as one of the best Spider-Man movies to ever swing onto screens – with Miles Morales being proof that anyone can be a hero. So what should a Spider-Verse sequel look like? We’ve got a few ideas.

Spider-Gwen + Miles

From the footage we’ve seen in trailers and exclusive clips, it looks like Miles and Spider-Gwen are going to get on quite well, and it would be great to see them team-up once again. Hopefully, they can still travel in between universes by the end of the movie, because the pair have an interesting dynamic in the comics that the animated sequel could quite easily adapt.

In a plotline that started in Spider-Man #12 and finished in Spider-Gwen #15, Miles’ Father disappeared and was discovered on Earth-65. Gwen and Miles teamed up to investigate why, and found that Miles’ Dad was actually the Scorpion on Gwen’s Earth. But when the pair also stumbled on a reality where they were married, they decided to see what would happen as a couple. As mentioned, the series only included two issues – so the relationship didn’t last too long. But figuring out that they work better as friends would definitely be a mature way of approaching a relationship. Regardless of how it plays out, who doesn’t want to see an upside down kiss between two dimension-crossed lovers?

New Villains

With new superhero movies always comes new villains. Sure, Wilson Fisk is an interesting main villain to use in a new animated franchise, but hopefully the sequel uses the opportunity to include new adaptations of classic characters. Since we’ve already seen the Ultimate version of the Green Goblin, what about other terrifying versions of the Goblin persona? There’s always the orange hooded Hobgoblin, or if Norman Osborn acquired a symbiote he could become Red Goblin.

Spider-Man has such a rich history of villains that Sony have plenty to pick from. The animated nature of the Spider-Verse franchise gives them so much more scope to go wild and crazy. You want to see Hydro-Man and The Rhino? Sure thing. An adaptation of The Clone Saga with The Jackal? It could work… Hello world, meet Marvel Zombies. Okay, maybe they won’t touch the clone fiasco… It seems like they’re committed to providing a captivating backstory if Kingpin’s story is anything to go by, so hopefully whichever villain they choose gets the same treatment.

Venom

Sony have just kick-started an incredibly popular live-action franchise with Venom, and although it wasn’t a full-horror movie, it wasn’t exactly kid-friendly either. Putting Eddie Brock and the Symbiote into a Spider-Verse movie introduces a younger audience to the character. Even from a profit perspective, Sony still gets more out of those rights. Let’s not forget, this wouldn’t even have to break the timeline of the original Venom film since Sony own both properties. They could quite easily have Eddie voiced by Tom Hardy and acknowledge his previous appearance.

Plus, it could also be a way of branching out into new territory for Venom. If the writers want to stick down the ‘alternate versions of a character’ route, there’s always the recent Venomverse storyline to adapt. That way, we could see a variety of heroes and villains get their own symbiotes! Picture Miles Morales trying to explain to Eddie Brock that his Venom Blast doesn’t have that name because of the Symbiote? Phil Lord and Christopher Miller could easily turn that into a hilarious exchange between the hero and the anti-hero. You know it makes sense, Sony.

Morlun and the Inheritors

For a film with ‘Spider-Verse’ in the title, it seems to remarkably miss a key element of the original storyline of the same name. Back in 2014, the huge event spanned most of the Spider-Man related titles, and brought a multiversal threat to anyone who could spin a web. Morlun and his family, the Inheritors were seeking out anyone with Spider powers, also known as Spider-Totems. They kill any Totem they find to absorb their life force as food. Couldn’t they just eat normal food like the rest of us?

Miles Morales and Peter Parker recruit alternate versions of Ben Reilly, Jessica Drew and even Uncle Ben to fight against the family of energy vampires that threaten the entire Spider-Verse. Considering Into the Spider-Verse has just introduced wider audiences to parallel universes and alternative versions of popular characters, a sequel could take that idea and run wild. The original Spider-Verse storyline would be a great way to do so.

Even Weirder Spider-Heroes

So, you thought Spider-Ham was weird? Well, do we have some stranger heroes for you. If the Spider-Verse sequel is going to double down on the alternative takes on Spider-Man, then it really needs to prove that it can go weirder. Ever heard of Golden Oldie? It’s a version of Aunt May who became the Herald of Galactus on her Earth. No, that’s not a joke. That’s an actual thing that happened in comics. But seriously, there are literally hundreds of different Spider-Men and Women waiting to be brought onto the big screen.

We all know that movies like to use montages to speed a story along. If Miles and Peter need to recruit other Spider-Heroes and go dimension hopping, it would be a great way to showcase some of the weird and wonderful characters populating the multiverse. How about Earth-311, where Peter Parquagh happens to live in the year 1602, in London? Again, not a joke. There’s Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara – who has one of the most impressive Spider-Man designs ever. Or perhaps Ben Reilly with his hooded costume and his clone backstory!

However Sony decides to move forward with the Spider-Verse franchise, they have an entire multiverse to explore.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14.

Must-Reads Of The Week From Brianna Labuskes

Happy Friday! Apologies for unexpectedly going MIA last week, but your girl here decided she needed some firsthand experience with the health care system via a trip to the emergency room. (Hot tip: Stay hydrated during stomach bug season, folks!) Many thanks to the wonderful Damon Darlin (also known as KHN’s executive editor) for filling in last week. Make sure to check it out if you missed it.

Onward to this week, though, where we’re finally starting to slow down as we drift toward the holidays.

“I hate to panic, but …” was a quote from NPR’s coverage of the health law enrollment numbers that pretty much summed up the atmosphere the day before the sign-up deadline. The big number to focus on here is that there are nearly 20 percent fewer new enrollees than at about this same time last year. The lag has advocates pointing nervous fingers at the Trump administration’s efforts to chip away at the health law.

But some experts eschew Chicken Little predictions (at least quite yet), saying that fewer sign-ups don’t necessarily mean more people will be uninsured. For one, the unemployment level is the lowest in decades (although that has nuances that are too complex to get into right here) so people who used to get health law plans might be covered by their employers. Secondly, the sign-up numbers don’t reflect anyone who is sticking with the plan they currently have.

Either way, we won’t have long to wait to see how it shakes out.

NPR: Enrollment in HealthCare.Gov Plans May Be Down for 2019

The Associated Press: Health Law Sign-Ups Lagging As Saturday Deadline Is Looming

Amid all that talk of sabotage and low numbers came a study that found 4.2 million Americans are actually eligible to get what amounts to free health care through the exchanges, as an unintended consequence of President Donald Trump nixing key health law payments last year.

The Hill: Study: 4.2 Million Uninsured People Eligible for Free ObamaCare Coverage

A quietly simmering debate over fetal tissue research brewing the past few months has started to come to a boil this week. (Although, if you’ve been reading your Morning Briefing regularly, this won’t come as a surprise.) Back in September, the administration launched an audit of all federally funded research that uses fetal tissue. The far-reaching ramifications were felt recently when a lab that has played an integral role in testing for HIV cures was put on notice that its funding could be canceled.

The sides are firmly drawn here and have deep roots in abortion politics (as witnessed in this quote from CQ’s coverage of Thursday’s heated House hearing on the topic: “Obviously the 800-pound gorilla in the room is that we know aborted tissue is being used,” said Georgia Republican Rep. Jody Hice).

With the National Institutes of Health signaling interest in pumping $ 20 million into finding an alternative to fetal tissue for research purposes, I don’t think this topic is going away anytime soon.

The New York Times: Fetal Tissue Research Is Curtailed by Trump Administration

The Hill: NIH to Fund Research Into Fetal Tissue Alternatives

The death of a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who had been taken into Border Patrol custody is likely to intensify scrutiny of the care immigrants detained by the U.S. government are receiving. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the girl had not eaten or consumed water in several days, and it’s unclear whether the agents had tried to rectify that situation. Advocates are saying the death is reflective of a “culture of cruelty” within the agency.

Meanwhile, there are nearly 15,000 migrant children in detention facilities in the country, where issues with background checks, abuse and neglect continue to make headlines.

The Washington Post: 7-Year-Old Migrant Girl Taken Into Border Patrol Custody Dies of Dehydration, Exhaustion

NPR: Almost 15,000 Migrant Children Now Held at Nearly Full Shelters

More voices are starting join the growing chorus of advocates, doctors and city leaders who oppose the administration’s proposed policy to penalize immigrants who are accepting government aid (such as Medicaid). It’s not just about public health, they say. The policy would also take a heavy financial toll.

Dallas Morning News: Dallas Mayor Says Trump Administration’s Proposed ‘Public Charge’ Rules Would Harm City’s Immigrants, Economy

There was some shade being thrown at the Supreme Court this week, when the justices declined to take up a case on state Medicaid funding and Planned Parenthood. Justice Clarence Thomas called out his conservative colleagues Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh for dodging the case. “So what explains the court’s refusal to do its job here? I suspect it has something to do with the fact that some respondents in these cases are named ‘Planned Parenthood,’” he wrote. The case itself was somewhat complex, but essentially the decision leaves in place Medicaid patients’ right to sue over provider issues.

The Associated Press: Justices Won’t Hear States’ Appeal Over Planned Parenthood

The maker of a device that reverses overdoses recently drew fire for jacking up the list price of its injector from $ 575 to $ 4,100 during a span of time that opioid-related deaths were also accelerating rapidly. As you can imagine, this did not go over well with either lawmakers or the public when it came to light. Now Kaleo, in damage-control mode, is releasing a generic version that comes with a $ 178 price tag. The whole journey is quite the snapshot of what’s going wrong with high health care costs.

Stat: Kaleo, Maker of $ 4,100 Overdose Antidote, to Offer Generic For $ 178

Speaking of, you have to check out the salacious details emerging in this case that started as an antitrust lawsuit against just two drugs and has ballooned into this sweeping investigation into price-fixing allegations in the generics marketplace.

The Washington Post: Generic Drug Price-Fixing Investigation Expands to 300 Drugs and 16 Companies

Pharma, meanwhile, is sweating over the Democrats taking power in the House. Once a political powerhouse of nearly mythological proportions, the industry has lost clout in recent years, and companies don’t think the new power structure will work in their favor.

Stat: Will Democrats in Congress Keep the Door Open for Pharma — or Slam It?

Whew! That was not as short as expected. Just in case you want some more great reads for your weekend, check out the miscellaneous file:

• What happens to your life when millions of people have witnessed you hit rock bottom? As the opioid epidemic dug deep roots into the country, there was this trend where videos and photos of people overdosing would go absolutely viral. Public health officials and cops at the time justified putting them up because the videos could act as a deterrent for drug use. For the people used as the face of the crisis, however, it was deeply life-altering.

The New York Times: How Do You Recover After Millions Have Watched You Overdose?

• Baby boomers are now aging alone more than any other generation in U.S. history. That isn’t just a sad statistic — it’s also a looming public health crisis. Loneliness has been as closely linked to early mortality as smoking up to 15 cigarettes or consuming more than six alcoholic drinks a day.

The Wall Street Journal: The Loneliest Generation: Americans, More Than Ever, Are Aging Alone

• A rash of recent headlines explores whether trauma is passed down through genes. It’s a very buzzy idea, but the evidence that trauma can leave a signature that lasts generations is circumstantial at best.

The New York Times: Can We Really Inherit Trauma?

I’ll leave you with some bah-humbug! warnings about not eating that raw cookie dough this holiday season (even though it’s clearly the best part of making cookies). Have a great weekend!

How Many Vacation Days Did You Use This Year?

how many vacation days did you use this year

How many vacation days did you use this year, readers — and what did you DO with your vacation? As 2018 comes to a close, it’s always a great idea to review your vacation days to make sure you’re using them properly (especially if they’re use-or-lose!), and we’d love to hear how many of you are already planning for vacations in 2019! When we’ve asked in the past about vacation time, 40% of you had used less than 50% of your time for the year (whoa!).

I’ve never had the luxury of working a job where vacation days rolled over, so I’ve always tried to make the most of vacation time by taking a lot of long weekend vacations and staycations. For the past few years with the kids, I’ve told myself to just buy airline tickets as soon as we have the school calendar, and deal with hotels and research as the trip gets closer — to force us to actually go places — but I’m still struggling to master the vacation that is planned really early. We’re looking at some international travel this summer, as well as a trip to “Harry Potterland” (Universal Studios) that my 7-year-old may or may not accept as a viable Christmas present, but we’ve yet to pull the trigger on anything.

For those of you who are great at vacation planning (or finding fabulous vacation packages), I’d love to hear from you: How many months ahead are you planning? If you get, say 20 days of vacation for 2019, how many do you vacation days do you “use” ahead of time? For those of you with partners, if you get more vacation (or less) than your partner, how do you deal?

Since the stock photo features a bag — and it is the season for gift-giving — anyone have any favorite travel gear to shout out? I’ve heard great things about Away luggage but I haven’t tried it yet.

How many vacation days did YOU use this year? If you're wondering what's normal vacation use is for career women -- and want to see how they make the most of their vacation time -- then this is the post for you! Lots of comments from women lawyers, professors and more!

Who are Ellie and Izzie from Gogglebox? The Warner sisters from Leeds who star on the Channel 4 show

GOOGLEBOX offers up nothing but cracking characters, and Leeds pair Ellie and Izzie Warner are up there with the best.

The outspoken duo have been likened to Marmite… But love them or hate them, viewers can’t seem to get enough.

Ellie and Izzi Warren landed with a crash, bang wallop on to Planet Gogglebox

Who are the Warner sisters?

Blonde Ellie and her younger sister, red-headed mum Izzi, are from Leeds.

While Ellie still lives at home, where the Gogglebox scenes are filmed, Izzi has her own flat — and says she doesn’t like her sister showing up unannounced.

Though they’re pretty close, Izzi thinks Ellie is disorganised, while Ellie thinks her sister is too bossy.

The pair love nothing more than watching telly, though they were recently knocking back cocktails on a joint holiday to Mallorca.

Ellie has been asked out by a few male viewers on Twitter who’ve fallen for her charms on telly but she’s yet to respond to any of them.

Like most sisters, Ellie and Izzi love and loathe each other at the same time

Why are Gogglebox viewers angry at them?

The gobby duo caused major Gogglebox controversy last month after making a “disgusting” joke about the United Airlines passenger David Dao, who was dragged off his flight due to overcrowding and knocked unconscious.

Ellie summed up David’s ordeal by saying: “Oh my god. That would make an amazing Snapchat story.”

“That would be straight on my story,” Izzi agreed. “What caption would you do?… ‘When they tell you no booze left on the flight’?”

Seeing as Dao had been assaulted, viewers were amazed the pair’s joke made the final cut of the show, with one Twitter user writing: “What is wrong with those girls?”

Ellie and Izzi love nothing more than settling down with the telly
C4

What else have they done on the show?

Many Gogglebox viewers find the duo hilarious but they’re often labelled “fake” due to their often ridiculous banter.

Back in 2015, they were mocked by viewers after Izzi compared a scene from the screen adaptation of novel Lady Chatterly’s lover to “something out of a book” — and Ellie said a dog from Dogs Might Fly looked like Leonardo Dicaprio.

On Twitter at the time, some viewers suggested they should be appearing on Towie rather than Googlebox.

Izzi and Ellie hit the town together regularly

When and how did they land their Gogglebox gig?

The girls first showed up on the Channel 4 show in 2015, and were amazed they’d been picked.

Ellie and Izzi bagged the job after being approached by an old friend who was casting for the show.

After originally saying no, the pair agreed to audition before bagging the gig.

Ellie said at the time: “We thought ‘Who’d want to watch us?’ and then we got picked and couldn’t believe it!”

They claimed at the time that Gogglebox was their fave TV show and one of the only ones Izzi ever tuned into.

The pair were delighted to be propelled into the TV spotlight

Criticized for Charms That Evoke Blackface, Prada Says It ‘Abhors Racist Imagery’

Facing online accusations that animal-like figurines and charms in its stores and windows evoke blackface, Prada Group issued a statement saying it “abhors racist imagery” and vowed to withdraw them from “display and circulation.”
In a Facebook post, Chinyere Ezie, a civil rights lawyer, said the sight of the figurines in the Italian brand’s store in New York’s SoHo district had her “shaking with anger,” describing “racist and denigrating #blackface imagery” and “Sambo like imagery.”

Ezie noted she had just returned from a visit to the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, taking in an exhibit on blackface.
“History cannot continue to repeat itself. Black America deserves better. And we demand better,” she wrote in her post, which got picked up by other blogs. “Shame on you Prada.”

In a statement to WWD, Prada said the figures are “fantasy charms composed of elements of the Prada oeuvre” and known as Pradamalia.
“They are imaginary creatures not intended to have any reference to the real world and certainly not blackface. Prada Group never had the intention of offending anyone and we abhor all forms of racism and racist imagery. In this interest we will withdraw the characters in question from display and circulation,” it

Yves Saint Laurent Illustrations for Children’s Book Up for Auction

THE DEVIL IN PARIS: Parisian auction house Cornette de Saint Cyr is holding an auction on Dec. 19 of 100 drawings by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.
The pictures, drawn by Saint Laurent between 1961 and 1962, were destined to illustrate a children’s book commissioned by Parisian publisher Jacques Damase, but the project never came through. This is the first time the drawings are being unveiled to the public.
Named “Le Diable à Paris” (“The Devil in Paris”), the book, written by Damase, features a dapper-looking devil, drawn by Saint Laurent, wearing a red suit and little black horns on the cover illustration.
Other drawings see the devil dress up to visit a duchess, sport a leopard-printed suit and even a bull’s head in an illustration titled “Le Diable Espagnol” (“The Spanish Devil”), where he is pictured alongside a flamenco dancer.
Drawn in ink, pastel or graphite in mostly red and black hues, the title character is faced with an array of magical creatures, such as a giraffe in the shape of the Eiffel Tower or a human body with a dragon’s head.
A statement from the auction house explained Damase met Saint Laurent through accessories designer Roger Vivier. At the time of the project, the

Roksanda Pre-Fall 2019

Looking to artist Rana Begum’s geometric patterns, optical tricks and fluorescent color palette, Roksanda Ilincic worked up a collection with a sporty-couture feel and a mix of smooth surfaces and rough edges. Highlights included taffeta gowns with pouf sleeves, fabric flower appliqués with frayed edges, and black scribble embroidery.

Other dresses – long and short – were adorned with cutout organza panels and more of those naif embroidered scribbles and looked as if they were designed by freewheeling art students. Another dress had a dramatic cape at the back and was covered with blurry, colored panels. For day, there were pleats and tucks galore on dresses made from long strips of mismatched, patterned fabric, or from lightweight cotton silk gazar in flouro pink or orange.

A pair of cream linen silk trousers came with color-blocked pastel racing stripes down the side, while a tailored jacket was an elegant patchwork of energy drink green and powdery blue. While many of the silhouettes in this upbeat collection were breezy, bright and dreamy, but there was a strictness to this collection, too, in the form of a pea green wool boucle coat and long matching skirt, and a sturdy cream

JWoww ‘Wants What Is Best’ for Her Kids Amid Roger Drama

Jenni “JWoww” Farley doesn’t want her ongoing drama with estranged husband Roger Mathews to have any impact on their children: daughter Meilani, 4, and son Greyson, 2.

“Jenni’s stance has been the same the whole time — she just wants what is best for their kids,” a source tells Us Weekly exclusively. “From the day [their split] became public, Jenni has not commented about it. She wants her kids to be OK and she doesn’t want her kids to go on social media someday and see that their parents are fighting.”

The Jersey Shore: Family Vacation star, 32, filed a restraining order against Mathews, 43, in the early hours of Friday, December 14, after the pair got into an argument. He shared a series of 10 videos on Instagram about the drama, including some filmed in the back of a police car.

“My wife, earlier tonight, we had a disagreement because she’s leaving again tomorrow for work and promised my daughter that she would be hanging out with her all day, whereas my daughter has the flu. So I took umbrage to it, and a little bit of a disagreement I would say ensued,” Mathews said in one clip.

He went on to call Farley “completely, uncontrollably emotional” and claimed that she told their kids that “their dad is a piece of s–t and she’s sorry she ever had children with him.”

The MTV personality shared her side of the story in a statement shared on Instagram later on Friday morning. She said in part that she had the authorities involved “as she felt it was in her best interest, and in the best interests of her children to do so.”

Farley’s costar Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi also spoke out in her defense, in addition to sharing security footage of Farley talking to police. “My best friend has been through A LOT these past few months and my heart breaks for her,” Polizzi, 31, wrote on Instagram before calling her BFF “a damn good mother.”

Farley filed for divorce from Mathews in September after three years of marriage. However, they continued to spend time together in the weeks that followed, and Mathews told Us exclusively in November that he and Farley were “working on things.”

How If Beale Street Could Talk Author James Baldwin Went From Literary Critic to Civil-Rights Icon

History changed around James Baldwin, but the glaring contradiction in American life that he so often highlighted still lurks within it. The author’s work argued that white Americans who boast of the United States as a nation of freedom can only do so by glossing over, to some degree, its history of slavery, as well as myriad other injustices experienced by minority groups of all kinds. In his lesser-known 1974 novel If Beale Street Could Talk, which arrives in theaters Friday with a film adaptation from Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins, insidious injustices are an inescapable part of everyday life — a truth the personal experience of which shaped Baldwin’s writing, propelling his evolution into a major voice for civil rights.

Born in Harlem in New York City on Aug. 2, 1924, Baldwin had one of his first political awakenings facing racism in the early 1940s at a restaurant in New Jersey, where he got a defense-related track-laying job during World War II. As the story goes, when a waitress told him the restaurant didn’t serve African Americans, he threw a glass at her. He felt “ready to commit murder,” as he later wrote in the 1955 anthology Notes of a Native Son, and thought he had to get out before he either killed someone or got himself killed. After that incident, he moved to Greenwich Village and began working in a restaurant and writing, then moved to Paris in 1948.

“Before he went to Paris, he had started to establish himself as a book reviewer, but he didn’t establish that prophetic voice until later,” says David Leeming, who worked for Baldwin and wrote James Baldwin: A Biography.

He would spend the rest of his life splitting his time between the United States and France. In Paris, he wrote Go Tell It On the Mountain — a semi-autobiographical 1953 novel about his stepfather, a stern preacher — and Giovanni’s Room, a novel that takes place within a circle of Parisian gay life, in 1956. He began to get more recognition among the general population for his critiques of American history, such as his 1955 anthology Notes of a Native Son, in which he wrote: “At the root of the American Negro problem is the necessity of the American white man to find a way of living with the Negro in order to be able to live with himself. And the history of this problem can be reduced to the means used by Americans — lynch law and law, segregation and legal acceptance, terrorization and concession — either to come to terms with this necessity, or to find a way around it, or (most usually) to find a way of doing both these things at once.”

While his career was already developing, there was one incident in that period that he would later single out as a starting point for his identity as a voice on civil rights.

On Sept. 4, 1957, white mobs spit on 15-year-old Dorothy Counts as she entered a newly-integrated school in Charlotte, N.C. Seeing news coverage of what happened to Counts compelled Baldwin to return to the U.S. to as a writer and activist. He repeatedly challenged white Americans to look inward, arguing in his 1961 anthology Nobody Knows My Name that the nation would not allow black people “to starve, to grow bitter, and to die in ghettos” if not driven by a fear that had nothing to do with the people who had to live with its consequences. He became even more famous as a spokesperson for the civil rights movement with a New Yorker essay that became the 1963 book The Fire Next Time, seeming to foreshadow 1960s race riots with its title, which was derived from a line in a spiritual in which God promises Noah that next time humanity will be punished for sin not with flood but with fire. Baldwin reiterated his belief that “the Negro problem” wouldn’t exist if white people truly learned to “love themselves and each other” — and made clear the terrible consequences that could follow if that didn’t happen.

With the publication of this essay, “he was suddenly recognized as an American novelist, not just a Negro novelist,” says Rich Blint, an expert on Baldwin and professor of Literature at the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School.

The year 1963 was a turning point in the civil rights movement, and by that point Baldwin was at the height of his career and at the center of it all.

He was in the middle of a speaking tour for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) when he appeared on the cover of the May 17, 1963, issue of TIME right after school walkouts turned violent in Birmingham, Ala. Televised images of African-American children getting hosed down and attacked by police dogs, combined with the deadly 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in the fall, are considered to be catalysts for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. “Spring 1963 will long be remembered as the time when the U.S. Negro’s revolution for equality exploded on all fronts,” TIME wrote the next month, following Attorney General Bobby Kennedy’s meeting with a group of African-American literati, which was organized by James Baldwin. “After the spring of 1963, there can be no turning back.”

And yet, that revolution didn’t lead to as much change as Baldwin had hoped for. From the late ’60s until his death on Dec. 1, 1987, at the age of 63, his writing would reflect his increasing frustration and disappointment that the nation had yet to fulfill the promise of full equality for people of all races and sexual orientations.

The assassinations of Medgar Evers in 1963, Malcolm X in 1965, and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968 “broke him,” says Blint. (In the 1972 anthology No Name in The Street, Baldwin recalls a postal clerk friend asking him if he could have the suit that Baldwin wore to Martin Luther King’s funeral after reading in a gossip column that the author vowed never to wear the suit again. Baldwin personally delivered it to him and stayed for dinner.) He attempted suicide at least four times throughout his life.

“Watching all of these men being snuffed out one by one really, really depressed him,” Blint says. “How much longer do we want to wait for a certain type of progress?”

It was in this later period that he wrote If Beale Street Could Talk, which reflects many of the often invisible, but perhaps even more dangerous, forms of racism that he saw throughout American culture. The novel’s protagonists have trouble finding an apartment because they’re black, and one is hastily locked up for a crime he did not commit — plot points that reflect the period’s concern with housing equality and the beginning of mass incarceration. TIME also saw it as a response to the studies such as the Moynihan Report, which made headline news of the state of vulnerable African-American families. “Possibly Baldwin, who now lives in France, took to long fiction for the first time in six years out of disgust with the slag heaps of sociology about blacks,” the magazine wrote in its original 1974 book review. “Such studies often go on about the instability of the black family; the [family in the novel is] both strong and united.” (The review also argued that the story would be more compelling staged, foreshadowing Jenkins’ film adaption: “As a novel it is not a success, being too sentimental and predictable by half. But it has the makings of a splendid opera.”)

While Baldwin is no longer alive, his writing is — from the 2016 Oscar-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro to the idea that he can be seen as a Founding Father of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“For people to reach for him in this moment makes all of the sense in the world — a moment of profound crisis, when the nation has to answer the question, Who are we?” says Eddie S. Glaude, a TIME columnist and Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University, who is writing a book about Baldwin.

And after all he lived through, perhaps that would not surprise Baldwin himself. “Each generation is promised,” he wrote in Notes of a Native Son, “more than it will get: which creates, in each generation, a furious, bewildered rage.”

‘Spider-Man’ swings into dazzling if goofy ‘Spider-Verse’

Much like its hero, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” swings wildly from place to place, in a tone that’s so uneven as to initially be a trifle disorienting. Stick with it, though, and this animated feature — distinguished by its dazzling visual palette, which creates the feel of a comic book leaping onto the screen — proves a great deal of fun, reinforcing that animation remains the ideal medium (if not the most profitable) for superhero adaptations.

All the Trimmings: The Sheen Factor

Contemporary sartorial authorities typically refer to just two options for formal silk: satin or ribbed (aka grosgrain). So when I recently came across a historical reference to a third option – “dull silk” – it was an eye-opener in a couple of ways.

Silk Satin

Firstly, it explained the dichotomy of Victorian and Edwardian sources referring to facings as being “silk or satin” as if the two were somehow mutually exclusive.  In actual fact, satin is a finish that can be produced by numerous materials, including silk.  Although some modern sources define satin solely as a synthetic version of silk, that is not only incorrect (likely stemming from the fact that most satin textiles these days are indeed cheaper synthetics, ) but it obviously couldn’t apply to facings made prior to the 1940s as polyester had not yet been invented.  This had me scratching my head for many years until I came across the aforesaid reference in a 1936 fashion magazine:

Lapels of single-breasted dinner jackets are usually faced with dull silk, grosgrain or barathea.  With the more informal double-breasted dinner jacket, many men have the shawl collar faced with satin.

This midnight blue jacket features lapels faced in black grosgrain silk.

This midnight blue jacket features lapels faced in black grosgrain silk.

Dull Silk – A Forgotten Tuxedo Lapel Material

The passage suggested to me that early authorities used the term ‘silk’ as shorthand for ‘dull silk’.  I searched my archives for similar references and found this caption in a 1940 issue of Esquire: “the new satin shawl collar and more conventional dull silk peak lapel”. The classification of dull silk as “conventional” certainly re-enforces my theory that ‘dull’ was implied in early references to ‘silk’ facings. The second revelation was that ‘satin’ is a fairly fluid term today, kind of like “midnight blue”.  The facings on my various tuxedos might or might not qualify as satin (see the very technical description here) but they are a far cry from the high-gloss appearance I associate with that term.  I would more accurately describe them as being dull silk because even though it has no fixed definition the term much more accurately captures their low-lustre finish.

It’s good to know that grosgrain isn’t the only option for understated trim considering how rare it is.  Certainly, if I were to find myself in the market for another tuxedo, I would pay much more attention to the sheen quotient of the facings to make sure I stay far away from the glossy look of rental wear.

Notched Lapel tuxedo with daywear vest and glossy lapel facings

Plastic perhaps “dulled” “flat” or “matte” is a better term as it doesn’t suggest ‘boring’ rougher finish also makes for easier tying bow tie.

Some of this year’s coolest gifts are not electronic, which should make some parents very happy as phone addiction is real. If there’s any gift that encourages some family time as well, then that’s a blessing since much of the time it seems like you’re talking to your kids while they’re barely looking up from their Instagram feed.

SCRUFF A LUVS PET TOYS

If your young child wants a pet but you know you’ll be the one taking care of it, get them a Scruff A Luv toy. It requires your child to wash and take care of their ‘pet’ in order to see it grow into the final product. While parents who reviewed it weren’t always happy with the scruffy toy that emerges, they did say that for the most part, their kids adored it. $ 11

FOR THE COOL KIDS

Teens are notoriously hard to buy for, as everything you like is corny to them and everything they like is corny to you. But after you’ve bought every video game and electronic thing they want, what’s left? Here are few things they may like but don’t blame us if they don’t. You can always give them a gift card if you’re not sure.

Each time the brand makes a “drop” or releases new product, there are lines around their Brooklyn, NYC, London, France and Japan stores. While a lot of their clothing becomes coveted and resold far beyond the original price, you can still pick up a shirt on their website for under $ 100. The days that moms wanted a toaster or vacuum cleaner are over. Chances are, your mother has a thriving life and career and is competing with you for Instagram likes. Sorry ladies but it seems that Brooklyn Beckham has been snatched up once again, and not by any of us.

The young photographer has been spotted out and about, with a new girl on his arm. But who is she?

We’re used to seeing Brooklyn with his ex girlfriend Chloe Moretz, but it seems that the former couple are officially off, with this week seeing not only Brooklyn and his new GF, but also Chloe moving on too with a playboy model.

The name of Brooklyn’s new girlfriend? Hana Cross.

But who is she? Here’s everything we know…

The young couple has made a string of appearances over the past few months, some less informal like Winter Wonderland and the Mumford and Sons gig last month. However they seemed to up it a notch by attending The British Fashion awards together, on the 10th December, hosted at The Royal Albert Hall.

And while Hana was photographed on the red carpet alongside Brooklyn and his parents, there are reports that they spent time together during the event, even attending an after party in Belsize Park together.

Now, the question that’s on everybody’s lips – has she met the parents?

Yes she has. Hana Cross and David Beckham were spotted at his launch party for Haig Whiskey just a few weeks ago – surely that’s saying something!

What’s in store for Brooklyn and Hana? Only time will tell.

The Ultimate Christmas Soul Playlist

I’m only 30 but when I think of classic Christmas soul music, I don’t think of Boyz II Men or Mariah Carey, like many of my counterparts do. I think of Otis Redding and James Brown. Now don’t get me wrong, they have Christmas classics, but when I am looking for that bottom of the gut, soul churning Christmas music. I skip most of the 1990s.

The other day I was listening to my Christmas playlist in my office and a co-worker asked, “what do you know about that?” I quipped, “a lot”.

Since I was a kid, my family has been playing the same Christmas cassette tape. It has a small white piece of half peeled tape on it, that reads “Christma ongs”. It was dubbed by an aunt or cousin but despite moves and life changes, this cassette has lasted. The songs are the soundtrack of such special memories.

I’m not walking around with a Walkman, so I have now pulled the playlist together on a streaming service and here is the list:

Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas – Carla Thomas

Back Door Santa – Clarence Carter

Santa Goes Straight To The Ghetto – James Brown

Christmas Ain’t Christmas – Bobby Womack

Let’s Make Christmas Mean Something This Year- James Brown

Presents For Christmas – Solomon Burke

All I Want For Christmas Is You – Carla Thomas

May Christmas Bring You Happiness – Luther Vandross

White Christmas – Otis Redding

Please Come Home For Christmas – Charles Brown

Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday – William Bell

This Christmas – Donny Hathaway

Silent Night – The Temptations

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus – The Jackson 5

One Little Christmas Tree- Stevie Wonder

What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas – Emotions

Happy Holidays To You – The Whispers

Merry Christmas Baby – Otis Redding

For my family, this is the quintessential Christmas soul playlist. When it cranks up, I know we’re ready to cook, eat, or play a game of spades.

What’s on your family playlist? Let us know in the comments!

How Many End Credit Scenes Are in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse?

With the reviews now in for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we can reveal whether there are any end- or post-credit scenes in the Sony-Marvel film and, if so, how many.

Turn away now if you don’t want to know!

Still here? OK then…

There isn’t really a mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but there is a nice and touching tribute to Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

The post-credits surprise, on the other hand, is a full-fledged scene.

Again, spoilers follow!

The scene features the surprise arrival of Spider-Man 2099, the Spider-Man of the future. The man under the mask is Miguel O’Hara, voiced by Oscar Isaac (a.k.a. Poe Dameron). His appearance leads to a fun retro-trip to the old Spidey cartoon from the 1960s.

‘Voltron’ Wasn’t Wrong to Kill Off Shiro’s Boyfriend

I’d been all in on Voltron: Legendary Defender since day one, being a fan of showrunners Joaquim Dos Santos & Lauren Montgomery’s previous work, specifically on series like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Naturally, considering The Legend of Korra had ended with the two primary female characters venturing off into the spirit realm, hand in hand, gazing lovingly into one another’s eyes, many fans, including myself, had long expected Voltron to deliver in the LGBTQ representation department. What I did not see coming was that representation in the form of Voltron’s former leader.

A Long-Expected Pairing Turns Sour

Shiro looking at Adam Voltron Legendary Defender

I’ll never forget my also much-older-than-the-target-audience friend’s vice-like grip on my arm, as part way through the episode “A Little Adventure,” we realized we were watching a scene between Shiro and his boyfriend. Another friend’s teenage niece about leaped out of her chair in excitement as Montgomery confirmed that this beautiful, tan-skinned megane-kun (translation: glasses character), Adam, was indeed Shiro’s very serious partner.

Of course, fans were, understandably, upset when Adam returned in Season 7’s “The Last Stand, Part 2” only for the creators to kill him off just as quickly as he was introduced. Like many, I binged the rest of the season in disbelief, refusing to believe that had really happened. I was certain that, like Lance’s sister Veronica, Adam too would turn up in the underground resistance, leading a ragtag group of survivors just as he had led a fleet of Earth’s greatest pilots in the fight against the Galra. But he didn’t, and my heart broke along with Shiro’s when he returned home to find that Adam’s warning had come true: He wasn’t there when he got back, not because he had moved on, but because he had died defending the planet Shiro left behind.

More Than Canon Fodder

Adam in cockpit Voltron Legedary Defender
Yes, Adam’s death is painful, but my goodness is it real.

Yes, “bury your gays” — reducing queer characters to inevitable tragedy — is an unfortunate trope that exists in fiction. It’s easy to see why there was an outcry amongst fans claiming this when Adam, one of the only confirmed gay characters in the series, was immediately terminated. However, it’s important to look at the bigger picture here which is Adam’s death contextually made sense in Shiro’s story. He wasn’t “fridged” — killed off to create motivation for the hero, namely revenge — but rather died in the fight defending the Earth against the Galra, something Shiro has been doing since the very beginning of Voltron

Shiro is a leader and a soldier, and, ultimately, Adam died fighting for everything his partner believed in. Just because his love interest died, doesn’t mean that Shiro stopped being gay. If anything, it’s more unusual to have a queer fictional character who isn’t actively involved in a love story, which is one of the things that makes Voltron’s approach to LGBTQ representation unique.

Sad Shiro Voltron Legedary Defender
Adam’s death doesn’t change who Shiro is at his core.

Let me preface this by saying, I am no stranger to gay men in my animation — a whole subgenre of shōjo anime (anime for girls) exists that focuses on male/male love stories. However, these stories are frequently heavily fantasized, occasionally problematic, and always just that: love stories. This is not the case with Voltron, because Voltron is not a love story. So instead of having gay characters solely to participate in a whirlwind romance, it remains true to what it is, a story about war, loss, and finding the strength to carry on in spite of it, while also featuring characters who happen to be gay. They don’t get plot armor — they’re treated like everyone else — and more than a few of the “good guys,” besides the much-lamented Adam, have lost their lives in this intergalactic war.

“I Want to Be a Paladin Again”

Which brings me back to Shiro, the last character I expected to turn out to be gay, simply because, well, he falls pretty solidly into the “noble hero” archetype. (I also didn’t actually expect him to be alive at this point, given the untimely death of his namesake in GoLion, but that’s beside the point.) When we meet Shiro, he’s the most experienced member of the team: he’s not a student, but a teacher, a soldier, an expert pilot, and the figurehead that holds Team Voltron together. Yes, the Galra put him through the wringer after capturing him, but he doesn’t let that change him.

Shiro and Keith Voltron Legendary Defender

Take, for example, Shiro’s actions in the much-beloved tabletop roleplaying episode “Monsters & Mana.” Every time he dies, he “wants to be a paladin again.” That’s who he is, fundamentally. He’s not just a Paladin of Voltron, but a paladin in the Dungeons & Dragons sense of the word: a warrior committed to righteousness, who stands steadfast in the battle against evil. No matter what hardships he encounters, he always comes back to that.

Voltron Legendary Defender Monsters and Mana Shiro

Shiro serves as a role model for all the other Paladins, who look to him for guidance, and inspiration — the fact that he can still be that and also gay is incredibly refreshing, and absolutely in line with everything that makes Voltron: Legendary Defender an exceptionally good series. I’ve seen numerous tweets of young men expressing how important the character Hunk is to them. He’s one of the only chubby characters they’ve seen who doesn’t simply exist to be the butt of a fat joke, but rather is kind, smart, and, in many ways, the most sensible of all the Paladins. For me, it’s Allura, a woman struggling to find her place as a leader, who is a good person, but not without her prejudices, which she learns to overcome as she is made aware of them. (Plus, I also would have totally fallen for Lotor.)

In Queer Company

LGBTQ relationships in Adeventure Time and Steven Universe (9)
Both 'Adventure Time' and 'Steven Universe' have celebrated queer relationships.

Now, of course, we are fortunate enough to live in an era where queer characters are becoming something of a norm. Series like the aforementioned Legend of Korra and Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time both ended with scenes confirming romantic connections between two women. Steven Universe features numerous queer couples amongst the female-presenting gems. DreamWorks latest foray into the world of Netflix original animation, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, already features a lesbian couple.

Voltron is far from revolutionary, but it is significant in that, it presents a gay character, who is a major established character within the series, who was previously in a committed LGBTQ relationship, who faces no adversity regarding his sexuality. His sexuality is not an endgame, but simply part of a multi-faceted character.

Do I hope we might get more from Shiro’s relationship with Adam or perhaps another LGBTQ couple riding off into the metaphorical sunset when the series concludes in its 8th and final season on December 14? Of course, I do. But, at the end of the day, Voltron is a show that is, on the surface, aimed at roughly 8 to 12-year-old boys and meant to sell toys, with a very masculine, extremely good, responsible, and loving gay man at the center of it. And that is awesome.

Jimmy Kimmel: Trump Wants Jared Kushner as Chief of Staff Because He’s ‘Good Enough to Screw’ Ivanka

ABC

Earlier this week, Jimmy Kimmel noted in his monologue that, given John Kelly’s clashes with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, whoever Donald Trump ends up picking to be his next chief of staff will need the approval of his daughter and son-in-law. Now, it seems that Kushner himself might be up for the job.

According to The Huffington Post, Kushner “has been pushing his own candidacy with Trump, citing his work on a criminal justice reform package and a claimed ability to work with Democrats.”

Or as Kimmel put it, “I guess the thinking is, if he’s good enough to screw my daughter, he’s good enough to screw the country,” to groans from his audience. “I really hope he hires Jared and then he fires Jared so we go through the whole thing,” he added.
