Review: Is Prince’s ‘Piano And A Microphone’ Release Worthy Of His Legacy?

If you’re a Prince fan, you’ve likely been in mourning since he transitioned to the upper realms 2 and a half years ago. Since then, amongst the infighting among former camp members, the ongoing mystery of the circumstances behind the alleged overdose death of one of the world’s most clean-living musicians, the big question has been how do you best respect his vast legacy?

With the number of releases in Prince’s famed vault of unreleased recordings said to be able to provide new music until the next millennium, the challenge is figuring out how and what and when to release it. Prince was an active musician for 37 years and, according to the archivist charged with cataloguing all his vault tapes, was working on music almost up until he passed away.

Given that Prince was on “The Piano and a Microphone” tour in the last year of his life, that the first vault release reflects that is fitting, although it would be great if the Estate would release the video from the very first one he did in January 2016 at Paisley Park. Those who have been to the Celebration at Paisley can attest that it is among the most personal of his concerts as he details, using the piano, his evolution as an artist from the very beginning.

But until then, Piano and a Microphone 1983 offers an intimate look into his artistic process. From the opening where Prince asks ‘Is that my echo?’ and then asks for the lights to be turned down, you are intimately immersed into a fluid musical mind. The 9 tracks are a window into the creation of such classic Prince songs as ’17 Days,’ ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘Strange Relationship’ as well as some segues into covers of Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Case Of You’ and the gospel standard ‘Mary Don’t You Weep,’ which provided the coda for Spike Lee’s latest film Black KKKlansman.

As any true Prince fans knows from years of collecting bootlegs, Prince often did multiple versions of his songs. There are at least 10 versions of ‘Something In The Water Don’t Compute’ from 1999, all of which are completely different takes on it. It’s as though Prince heard and explored every possible way one song, chorus, lyric and melody could be modified, upgraded, turned into an instrumental or subtly changed by altering tempo, changing the instrumentation or the way the hook was played or sang. That is showcased on Piano and a Microphone 1983 from an a capella version of the chorus of “Purple Rain” to an early working version of “17 Days” to a portion of “International Lover.”

What this provides is a close-up view of a great artist creating. You can hear everything from his foot stomping the piano’s pedals to him sniffling on “Mary Don’t You Weep” as having a cold didn’t stop his creating one bit. Collaborator Jill Jones has described laying under Prince’s piano looking out onto the Minnesota countryside in the early years while he played for hours. That you won’t ever have that experience is somewhat alleviated by the fact that through Piano and a Microphone 1983 you can at least get a sense of what that may have felt like.

Piano and a Microphone 1983 Track Listing:

“17 Days”

“Purple Rain”

“A Case Of You”

“Mary Don’t You Weep”

“Strange Relationship”

“International Lover”

“Wednesday”

“Cold Coffee & Cocaine”

“Why The Butterflies”

Padma Lakshmi Reveals She Was Sexually Assaulted at 16 and Kept Silent for Years

In light of the sexual assault accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford that allegedly went unreported for decades, Padma Lakshmi is sharing her own experience.

In an op-ed in the New York Times published Tuesday, the Top Chef host, 48, wrote that she dated a 23-year-old college student when she was 16 because he was “charming and handsome” and would “flirt” with her at her part-time retail job at a mall in Los Angeles. But just a few months into the relationship, Lakshmi says he sexually assaulted her while she was sleeping.

“When we went out, he would park the car and come in and sit on our couch and talk to my mother,” Lakshmi began. “He never brought me home late on a school night. We were intimate to a point, but he knew that I was a virgin and that I was unsure of when I would be ready to have sex.”

Then, she stated: “On New Year’s Eve, just a few months after we first started dating, he raped me.”

The mom of one shared several details of the encounter, explaining that she was neither drinking nor wearing anything revealing — though “it doesn’t matter,” she asserted — and that she went home with him, fell asleep, and woke up with him on top of her.

“I asked, ‘What are you doing?’ ” Lakshmi recalled. “He said, ‘It will only hurt for a while.’ ‘Please don’t do this,’ I screamed.”

Lakshmi says she felt it was her fault at the time. “We had no language in the 1980s for date rape,” she wrote.

The cookbook author also referenced an earlier experience with sexual abuse, this time allegedly by her stepfather’s relative when she was only 7. She said her parents sent her away after she told them. “The lesson was: If you speak up, you will be cast out,” Lakshmi said. She told this story on Twitter last Friday.

In the Times, the model drew connections between her story and current events, namely the allegations against Justice Kavanaugh and President Donald Trump’s comments questioning why Dr. Ford didn’t file a police report at the time—which caused the hashtag #WhyIDidntReport to trend on Twitter.

Lakshmi wrote of Ford and second Kavanaugh accuser Deborah Ramirez: “I understand why both women would keep this information to themselves for so many years, without involving the police. For years, I did the same thing.”

“I have nothing to gain by talking about this,” she continued. “But we all have a lot to lose if we put a time limit on telling the truth about sexual assault and if we hold on to the codes of silence that for generations have allowed men to hurt women with impunity.”

The Bravo star has been politically outspoken in the past, most recently with the defense of the ideology of her friend Susan Sarandon.

After the Thelma & Louise actress, 71, renewed her feud with Debra Messing and received further backlash from commenters criticizing her support of a third-party candidate in the 2016 presidential election, Lakshmi urged followers to consider others’ opinions and lay off Sarandon.

“I’ve known @SusanSarandon for a decade,” Lakshmi tweeted. “There are very few actresses who are such dedicated humanitarians and activists. Instead of vilifying someone for endorsing a third party candidate in 2016, why not focus on what you’re doing in your community to create change?”

The Love, Loss and What We Ate author continued: “Sometimes we have different opinions than our friends or people in our industry but it’s important to have a dialogue to learn and grow. This ‘cancel’ culture and progressive infighting isn’t the solution. Stop bullying Susan.”

On Monday, other stars like Samantha Bee, Alyssa Milano, and Kerry Washington participated in the nationwide #BelieveSurvivors walkout in support of Dr. Ford, which was organized by Planned Parenthood.

Do You Buy Duplicates Of Your Favorite Clothes?

do you buy duplicates of your favorite clothes?I thiiiink we’ve talked about this before (possibly in our discussion of shopping habits or in this long ago discussion of what clothes do you buy again and again), but it’s been ages and ages: Do you buy duplicates of your favorite clothes? This can either mean, “Hey, these pants ROCK and I am going to buy them in every color,” to “Man, it stinks that my favorite t-shirt is often in the wash, so I’ll just buy 3 more,” to “I love this dress SO MUCH and if I am ever unable to wear it I will be sad, so I’m going to buy a backup!”

For a long time this was default advice for fashiony people — if you love it, buy duplicates! But in the age of minimalism, do you think that’s still true? If you wear a work uniform or a capsule wardrobe for work, do you like this idea? On the flip side, if you’re in a style rut, do you blame too many similar purchases?

For my $ .02, I kind of do tend to buy duplicates of my favorite clothes, and I’ll admit that I sometimes regret it. Right now I think I have four each of my favorite black t-shirts from Everlane (affiliate link) and Lands’ End (which I’m now happy about since I think they stopped selling my preferred slub jersey!). I have two colors of my favorite Hue leggings and an additional one that I bought on sale (with tags still on in case). I have the exact same pair of jeans in two washes. I have multiples of the same sheath dresses. I do this with makeup too — I have the same eyeliner in multiple colors, and I just bought a backup of my favorite splurge-y lipstick because I believe it’s being discontinued. If I like something, I use some of my favorite online shopping apps to watch for sales and then strike.

How about you, readers: Do you buy duplicates of your favorite clothes? Do you buy them OFTEN or only if you see a crazy sale? Have you ever regretted buying a duplicate of something?

Stock photo via Deposit Photos / kopitin

Do you buy duplicates of your favorite clothes for work and beyond? Do you buy duplicates because you love the fit, you worry it will sell out or be discontinued, or to simplify your shopping and work outfits? What other shopping habits do you have for your work wardrobe? Great discussion with the readers.

WATCH: Will Smith Jumps Into His 50th Birthday

LITTLE COLORADO RIVER GORGE, Ariz. (AP) — Like a scene out of a high-octane action movie that he would star in,Will Smith celebrated his 50th birthday Tuesday by successfully bungee jumping from a helicopter near the Grand Canyon.

Cameras, which captured the stunt for a livestream on YouTube , showed the actor hooked to a harness and bungee cords dangling over a gorge in northeastern Arizona.

“This is some of the most beautiful stuff I’ve ever seen in my life,” Smith said while still swinging over the chasm.

He described the experience as going “from pure terror to absolute bliss.”

The entire event had the feel of a polished episode of reality TV. Camera crews showed Smith, wife Jada Pinkett Smith and his three children being greeted by dozens of relatives and friends on a platform. His “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” co-star, Alfonso Ribeiro, served as a host interviewing Smith and others before and after.

The stunt was billed as a leap “in the heart of the Grand Canyon.” But the jump was outside Grand Canyon National Park on the Navajo Nation. The tribe’s reservation borders the east rim of the national park.

A Navajo medicine man gave Smith a blessing and thanked him for coming to the reservation.

Smith said the bungee jump was a challenge from Yes Theory, a YouTube channel that makes videos of people doing activities outside of their comfort zone. But the event also raised money for charity through an online lottery for a chance to watch the jump in person. The proceeds will benefit access to education for children in struggling countries.

6 Most Anticipated Games of October 2018

October is right around the corner, and that means it’s officially videogame season! Loads of highly anticipated titles are about to drop, and it’s going to be nearly impossible to keep up with them all. Don’t worry, though, there’s no shame in adding a few or even all of these upcoming games to your backlog for future fun.

This October will, unsurprisingly, feature a plethora of Triple-A titles. However, there will also be a couple of high-profile, smaller titles available for anyone looking for a more intimate undertaking. These are the six most anticipated games releasing in October 2018.

Mega Man 11

  • Release Date(s): October 2
  • Developer(s): Capcom
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Action Platformer

Unless jumping through doors is a must-have feature for you, the upcoming Mega Man 11 looks like a nostalgic delight. Combining the classic Mega Man formula with the graphic affordances of modern hardware, this game is sure to offer a terrific experience for newcomers to the series and veterans alike. Also, Mega Man 11 will introduce a mainline counterpart for Blast Man — a character from the spin-off title Megaman Battle Network 6. This will be the first time the main series games have adopted a spin-off character, which should be a fun treat for fans of the surprisingly good Battle Network series of games.

The Mega Man franchise is so prominent and refined that you pretty much know exactly what you’re in for with Mega Man 11. Using the same successful formula as previous entries — 2D platforming, an impressive variety of enemies and bosses, and power-ups galore — Mega Man 11 doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel to be a great game. All it has to do is deliver on the fun and challenging gameplay the series has refined over the course of more than 30 years.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

  • Release Date(s): October 5
  • Developer(s): Ubisoft Quebec
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Action RPG

After the overwhelming success and critical acclaim of last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, do we really need another entry in the franchise to release so soon? The answer is a resounding yes. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set to be one of the most ambitious and over-the-top entries in the series so far. Set in Ancient Greece, the game will lean into that rich mythology and have the player face off against Minotaurs, Gorgons, and a many more fantastic foes.

Early impressions of Assassin’s Creed Origins suggest that this game will lean even further into RPG elements than previous titles. For a series that felt stagnant just a few years ago when Syndicate dropped, these innovations are more than welcome. Hopefully, this title continues Origin’s momentum and delivers dozens of hours of stealth-heavy combat. Also, Socrates analyzes and critiques every single decision you make in the game, which is bound to be meme-worthy.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

  • Release Date(s): October 12
  • Developer(s): Treyarch
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: First Person Shooter

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (stylized as Call of Duty Black Ops IIII) may have a frustrating logo, but the game itself looks like it’s going to be a ton of fun — with scores of throwbacks for longtime fans of the franchise. While the game is ditching a narrative-driven campaign, it will feature a variety of online multiplayer modes. Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Zombies all make an expected return alongside Blackout, the new battle royale mode.

The addition of new mode implies Treyarch is trying to shake up the classic FPS series. Even so, Black Ops 4 still looks to be a by-the-numbers Call of Duty game. However, first-person multiplayer shooter fan interested in seeing Treyarch’s take on battle royale genre are sure to have a good time. With the rise of titles like Fortnite and PUBG, it feels the industry might be moving past the age of Call of Duty. Here’s hoping Black Ops 4 manages to prove that there is a place for the series in the modern gaming landscape.

The World Ends With You: Final Mix

  • Release Date: October 12
  • Developer(s): Square Enix and Jupiter
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch
  • Genre: Action RPG

The fantastic game The World Ends With You was unfortunately overshadowed by other titles in the Nintendo DS’ massive catalog of incredible titles. Thankfully, the Nintendo Switch is giving the game another chance to shine with an enhanced port simply titled, The World Ends with You: Final Mix. On top of a new control and display scheme to make the game a better fit for the Switch, this port will also feature a few new story beats and character interactions.

The World Ends With You is a delightfully weird game about teenagers trapped in an alternate version of Shibuya, Japan after they die. They are forced to compete in different challenges for a chance to return to the living world or transcend to a higher plane of existence. A lot is going on in The World Ends With You, and, thankfully, it’s all a stylishly good time. If you like melodramatic teenagers and innovative combat that brilliantly utilizes a touchscreen, this port will totally be worth your time.

Soulcalibur VI

  • Release Date: October 19
  • Developer(s): Project Soul
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Fighting Game

After six long years of waiting, Soulcalibur VI will once again bless the fighting game community with its arena-style, weapons-based combat. Between the unmitigated success of Dragon Ball FighterZ and the hype surrounding Super Smash Bros Ultimate, it’s clear that fighting games are hot right now. Soulcalibur VI’s three-dimensional battles and overall goofiness set it apart from its more serious competitors.

While lots of fighting games embrace a handful of ridiculous elements — like Street Fighter’s incredibly weak Dan Hibiki or Mortal Kombat’s gory finishing moves — Soulcalibur really leans into the bizarre. The franchise has had some amazing cameo fighters, including Link, Darth Vader, and Kratos; and is set to keep the trend going with Geralt from the Witcher series. If you can look past the somewhat dated and problematic designs of some of the female fighters, Soulcalibur VI is sure to be full of fights to remember.

Red Dead Redemption 2

  • Release Date: October 26
  • Developer(s): Rockstar Studios
  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
  • Genre: Action-Adventure

Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR 2)is arguably the most anticipated game of this console generation. The original Red Dead Redemption was nothing short of a masterpiece, and its sequel looks to be everything that made the first great, and more. If RDR 2 incorporates the original game’s expansive open world, rewarding combat and missions, and fun Easter eggs; it will be a frontrunner for the best game of 2018.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the prequel to the first game and will have players take control of the outlaw Morgan, a member of the Dutch Van der Linde gang. Comprised of character from the first game, the gang and yourself will explore the wild west and witness the adventures hinted at in the first game. While it’s not totally clear yet how the gameplay will be different from Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar’s handling of the Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne series certainly inspire confidence. Really, the only major worry is that it will be too good and addicting. We do have other games to play this fall and during the holidays.

One of the best things about beauty and makeup is the fact that there aren’t any rules. The real name of the game is creativity. You can use eyeshadow as blush or even lipstick as eyeshadow. If you can make it work AND feel good about it, by all means, do it.

Meghan Markle and her longtime beauty guru, Daniel Martin, are proponents of this multi-use philosophy. In a recent interview with E! If you’ve been loving the Duchess of Sussex’s natural yet gorgeous glow, then you’ll be happy to know it doesn’t actually take much to achieve. The secret is out and it’s called Aquaphor.

If you’re not yet familiar with the under-$ 5 healing balm, it’s an ointment used to treat dry, cracked and aggravated skin. “Before highlighters, you would do highlighting with Aquaphor,” Martin shared in the interview. “Aquaphor will give you that same texture, especially in a photo [when applied] on the high points of the face.” Very enlightening information, if you ask us.

That’s not all. Aquaphor packs a mean punch when it comes to its range of uses. Due to its healing properties, it can be used to prevent skin from scarring or treat mild eczema. If you’re not liking the flaky aftermath from using Retin-A, the glycerin in the ointment will help counteract it. And because of its crazy hydrating action, it makes an amazing nighttime eye cream, lip balm or eye gloss, and it’s great for removing eye makeup in a pinch. Best of all, it’s non-comedogenic, so there’s no need to worry about breakouts.

Next time you’re at the drugstore, be sure to pick up a tube or three of Aquaphor and we promise, it will be your new best friend.

How Many Dress Shirts Does a Man Need?

Have you ever wondered how many dress shirts you must have to have a complete classic style wardrobe?

If you’re a follower of the Gentleman’s Gazette, you may have come across the guides about 10 dress shirts every man should invest in but if you’re looking into building a timeless classic man’s wardrobe, ten is just the start.

To answer the question right from the get-go, how many dress shirts do you need? The answer is it depends. Let’s break it down. Personally, I have about 60 to 70 dress shirts; sometimes I add, some sometimes I’ll retire some, but overall, that’s the number. Personally, I don’t consider it to be too much for a number of reasons.

A selection of dress shirts

A selection of dress shirts

1. Dress Shirts Are The Backbone Of My Wardrobe.

I hardly ever wear undershirts and so it’s always something that protects my jackets and my outer garments from my body fluids. With the exception of going to the gym or maybe mowing the lawn, I usually wear dress shirts or maybe a polo shirt when it’s really hot and I’m in a very casual setting. So for me, a dress shirt is truly an everyday piece of my attire.

2. Dress Shirts Come In Endless Variations.

Yes, you may have one white shirt but then there are different weaves, weights, patterns, collar shapes, cuff shapes, fits, and so it’s not difficult for me to always come up with a new shirt that’s different than any other that I’ve had so far.

3. Dress Shirts Provide Personality.

I actively try to incorporate different colors into my overall outfits. So rather than going with that white shirt, I maybe go with an off-white or a light pale yellow.

A blue dress shirt with purple paisley tie from Fort Belvedere

4. Dress Shirts Are An Investment.

I still have shirts in my wardrobe that are more than ten years old and I still have them in my rotation. Of course, the more shirts you have, the fewer you wear the individual ones, the longer they will overall last.

The oldest shirts I have in my wardrobe today I bought used from a gentleman who was a realtor and about to retire, he had my height and he had all of his shirts made at Siniscalchi in Milano and it’s a bespoke shirt maker that is very expensive. Shirts usually go for around five to six hundred euros and he was just handing them to me at bargain prices and they all had very cool fabrics, very unusual styles. It’s not something I would suggest you invest in when you’re just building a shirt wardrobe but it’s definitely something you can add once you have all the basics covered. If you take care of your shirts properly, they should last you a long time.

Siniscalchi in Milano bespoke dress shirt

Siniscalchi in Milano bespoke dress shirt

If you have shirts made for you, it may be a good idea to invest in separate collars and cuffs because that’s what usually wears out the first and so you can just exchange that and still enjoy that shirt. Now, some of the old Siniscalchi shirts I have are just starting to fray around the edges on the collar and the cuffs and since I do not have any excess fabric, I could turn them into Winchester shirts meaning I use contrasting white collars and cuffs, that way, I could still enjoy wearing the overall shirt without having to just buy an entirely new shirt.

Francesco Barberis Canonico

Francesco Barberis Canonico

The other option would be to simply wear them as they are and for example, Francesco Barberis Canonico is someone who could afford a new shirt but he deliberately chooses to wear really worn down shirts and if you take a closer look, you can always see that his shirts are heavily frayed and you can see the interlining and white sometimes popping out from underneath but just like having all the rugs in your home with signs of wear, it’s kind of a very British attitude and he just goes with it and it suits his style. I’m not saying this is something that you should practice and it requires a certain style in order to pull it off. More often than not, people would probably think of you as frumpy or not well taken care of if you have a meticulous wardrobe with fraying shirts.

5. I Like To Change My Shirt Wardrobe With The Seasons.

In the winter, I wear heavier oxfords or heavier twill shirts, sometimes they have a little flannel texture, just so I’m warmer and more comfortable. In the summer, I wear very lightweight fabrics with an open weave that help my skin to breathe and keep me cooler.

Open weave shirt fabric, ideal for summer

Open weave shirt fabric, ideal for summer

Of course, during the in-between seasons, you can wear medium weight fabrics and ultimately, you have to analyze where you live. If you live in a climate like I do where you have very hot summers and very cold winters, you need different shirts than if you live let’s say in Sri Lanka where it’s hot all year round.

Dry cleaning shirts is unnecessary

Dry cleaning shirts is unnecessary

6. I Am Not A Big Fan Of Dry Cleaning Dress Shirts.

Yes, it would be easier to do so but I have very good quality dress shirts and at a dry cleaner, they usually wash them not as gently and carefully as it can be done at home. Also, they’re usually not completely hand ironed but machine ironed and all of those things help to wear down your shirt prematurely.

How Many Shirts Should You Invest In When You’re Starting Out & You’re Interested In A Classic Wardrobe?

I would say ten is the bare minimum.

The Basics

I think every man should invest in ten dress shirts if they have somewhat of a use for dress shirts on a regular basis. If you wear shirts to the office, ten is actually the bare minimum. I suggest having more like a three or four-week rotation which means 15 or 20 dress shirts. Of course, the bigger the rotation, the longer your shirts will last.

For the most part, the first ten shirts should be mostly white, off-white, or shades of blues.  Personally, I’m a big fan of pastel-colored shirts, light greens, or lavender, or yellow, but typically that’s something you should add on top of the ten basics.

A white French cuff dress shirt with mother of pearl buttons

A white French cuff dress shirt with mother of pearl buttons

If you don’t have to wear a dress shirt to work and you don’t like wearing dress shirts, I suggest you have at least three dress shirts that you can always rely on. One is a white dress shirt, ideally with French cuffs for cufflinks without a chest pocket and it’s something that you can wear for anything from a job interview, to a funeral, to a wedding, or any kind of other formal events.

If you don’t have cufflinks or you don’t want to invest money in them, go with a single barrel cuff which is also known as a button cuff. If you want to invest in cufflinks, I would suggest you get one pair in gold and one pair in silver in a very traditional style without any diamonds or colored stones. Personally, I would choose a monkey fist knot cufflink because they’re versatile, they’re classic, and it’s something you could wear with any kind of outfit.

Checked Shirt Fabric - Ideal for Business Casual

Checked Shirt Fabric – Ideal for Business Casual

Checked Shirts

Ideally, you get it with a button-down collar because it’s more casual and you don’t need to wear it with any form of neckwear and for that, you definitely want to have barrel cuffs or button cuffs and you can also have a chest pocket if you want.

Linen Jacket and denim shirt

Linen Jacket and denim shirt

Denim Shirts

It can really help to dress down other things, you don’t have to iron it, it’s something that is popular right now, and has been popular for the last few years. It’s soft, it’s hard wearing, and it’s something that works well in any wardrobe.

The Sky Is The Limit For Menswear Enthusiasts

Obviously, that’s me! You can have just ten shirts that are all in white but they can have different cuff styles, collar styles, weaves, front plackets, buttons, and all those little details make the shirts different and suited for different occasions.

Butler Luxury Hanger in Whiskey

Butler Luxury Hanger in Whiskey

Of course, at this point, storage can be a challenge and basically, you can fold them and put them in drawers but I find that it takes up a lot of drawers and so I hang all of my shirts on specific shirt hangers that are not too wide so they don’t take up too much space in my wardrobe. Personally, I use the ones from Butler luxury which served me quite well.

A green suit combined with a pastel colored dress shirt with an orange shantung bow tie

A green suit combined with a pastel-colored dress shirt with an orange shantung bow tie and boutonniere from Fort Belvedere

So once you have all the basics covered, I suggest you go with pastel colors. Pastel pink, pastel lavender, green, you can have other shades that are combining those colors and just play with things. You can also add different kinds of patterns such as maybe a small houndstooth shirt, a horizontal striped shirt, or stripes in an unusual color.

Experiment With Different Shirt Details

Of course, you can also experiment with different fabrics and different weights, as well as finishes and on top of that, playing with a collar shape is probably the detail that has the biggest impact because it defines the V shapes and the triangles that lead to your face.

Play With The Different Options You Have

First of all, it’s the height of your collar, then the spread of your collar, also how long you want the collar to be in the front, as well as how much tie space you want which really depends on what kind of tie knots you tie. If you have bigger tie knots such as the Windsor, you want more tie space, otherwise, you can get away with no tie space at all. Of course, you can also have club collars or create collars for collar pins with little pin holes in them just so you have exactly the right shirt for the right occasion.

Wearing a collar pin is something you should consider if you want the classic look

Wearing a collar pin is something you should consider if you want the classic look

I also urge you to experiment with pleats in the back or if you have little grinze patterns, you can have shirts that have a higher degree of handwork, you can have shirts with different buttons, you can experiment with shirts from different shirt makers. Over time, you probably create some preferences for certain kinds of shirts for certain occasions and it’s just a joy to experiment and try new things.

If you attend evening events regularly, you also may want to invest in different kinds of evening shirts. Some could have wide pleated fronts or slim pleated fronts. You could have different kinds of Marcella inserts, you can have starched shirts, and it’s just interesting and with black tie, there’s not a whole lot variety in what you can do so changing up the shirt detail has a much bigger impact than it would on let’s say a business suit.

CONCLUSION

Overall, just like with anything else in your wardrobe, it really depends on your needs and what you want, however, once you know what you’re going for, it pays to start out with the basics that give you the most use for your purpose which means the lowest cost per wear.

In general, that means staying away from super flashy or unusual things and it means that you leave them behind even though they may be really discounted on a super sale because even if you get the shirt at 90% off, it is kind of wasted if you just wear it twice in a period of 10 years.

Aziz Ansari’s Comeback Gigs Split Opinion

FREDERIC J. BROWN

The paths of rehabilitation for comedians accused of sexual misconduct as part of the #MeToo movement are winding. But one thing is clear: They all appear to include a stop at the Comedy Cellar in New York’s Greenwich Village.

After Louis C.K., the latest performer to make an appearance on the Village’s hallowed Cellar stage is Aziz Ansari—who faced an uncertain future after an anonymous 23-year-old woman accused him of pressuring her into giving him oral sex after the two went on a date.

Ansari sort-of apologized for his behavior, while denying he had been aware of doing anything wrong.

EXCLUSIVE: Fashion Takes a Twirl at New York City Ballet

NEW YORK – Backstage at the David H. Koch Theater here last week, red devils and modernist clowns intermingled off stage right, as dancers of the New York City Ballet ran through a dress rehearsal for the company’s Fashion Gala.
The annual event — set to mark its seventh iteration on Thursday evening — assigns fashion designers and choreographers the team objective of creating a new work that’s innovative in both its movement and visual appeal.
Demonic flamenco dancers are the invention of Gareth Pugh, the London-based designer, who has created costumes for a new piece by choreographer Matthew Neenan.
Monochromatic excess was conceptualized by Giles Deacon, a mad-hatter of London’s fashion scene who currently presents his collections as part of Paris Couture week. His costume designs — a fleet of kicky Renaissance court jesters — will accompany dancers in a new work choreographed by Kyle Abraham.
Flotsam chiffon dresses by Italian designer Alberta Ferretti will also whisk across the stage — hers to join a new work by Gianna Reisen.
The NYCB will dance these new pieces one week into a fall season that began mired in controversy. Following sexual misconduct allegations by a former student, City Ballet terminated two male principal dancers and

Steal Alert: The Orient Bambino Small Seconds Champagne Dial for $160

Massdrop: Orient Bambino Small Seconds – $ 159.99 FINAL ($ 330)

NOTE: If you’re going for the champagne dial shown above, you’ll need to select model RA-AP0003S10A at checkout.

Yes, you can get some of the other colorways for less at dependable, 3rd party “gray” market dealers. But ever since its arrival here in the US, plenty of us have been drooling over that champagne dial. And it’s a hard one to find at a significant discount.

The Orient Bambino Small Seconds Champagne Dial

Massdrop has got the whole spectrum. And for now, the champagne dial is still available for a pre-order. Diameter is the Bambino standard 40.5 mm, so it should be wearable by most. Lug width is 21mm, so replacement bands might be a bit tough to find. The croc embossed leather strap it comes with feels decently flexible and soft for what it’s worth. Crystal is still noticeably domed for that retro feel. Water resistance is just 30m, but that’s not unexpected with a dress watch like this. Especially being that they threw an exhibition caseback on this one, to show off that in-house Japanese made automatic movement.

The Orient Bambino Small Seconds Champagne Dial

The star of the show has to be the smaller seconds sub-dial at six o’clock. Just a bit of texture, and positioned just so. The Orient Logo and “Automatic” script takes residence at twelve, and the only other text to the dial is a barely noticeable “mov’t Japan” and model number at the very bottom. It’s of course an in-house automatic movement, and it hacks and hand winds at the onion style crown. Comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty.

Again, it’s the champagne dial shown in this post that’s the steal. You’ll need to select model RA-AP0003S10A at checkout. The other colors seem to be more widely available, and often for less. This one is a bit tougher to find, especially when it comes to sites & sellers that don’t look… questionable.

Big thanks to Brandon D. for the tip.

That’s all. Carry on.

Ashley I. and Jared: We’re Inviting Ashton and Mila to Our Wedding!

Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon’s wedding is shaping up to be a wild night! The Bachelor in Paradise alums revealed to Us Weekly exclusively that they extended an invitation to superfans Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis after bumping into them at an event in August.

“We got to meet Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, which was one of the coolest moments of my life,” Haibon, 29, told Us at the Night School premiere at Regal L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Monday, September 24.

Iaconetti, 30, chimed in, “They’re Bachelor fans. They’ve talked about us publicly, personally multiple times. So we knew all we had to do was make eye contact with them. When we did, it was like all our dreams came true. Ashton was like, ‘No way!’ He got so stoked.”

As for the Bad Moms star’s reaction? “Mila was like, ‘Don’t even tempt us with inviting us to the wedding because we’ll actually take you up on the offer,’” the Bachelor Winter Games alum told Us.

Haibon echoed, “We’re like, ‘Don’t you worry, we’re inviting you.’”

Iaconetti told Us that she reached out to her wedding planner without hesitation. “We’re like, ‘OK … you’ve got to find their address,’” she joked.

Fans have said for years that the Ranch star, 40, is Haibon’s celebrity doppelgänger. They showed off their resemblance on Instagram in August in a selfie with Kunis, 35, and Iaconetti at Clayton and Ellen Kershaw’s Ping Pong 4 Purpose event in L.A.

The Bachelorette alum thinks he and Kutcher have more than just physical similarities.

“They’re very well known to be best friends and now in a relationship. Very similar to us,” Haibon told Us of Kutcher and Kunis, who wed in 2015. “It was cool seeing that friendship and rapport between the two of us. … She was like, ‘Oh, that is the show that we always watch together.’ He was like, ‘Oh, well, you end up falling asleep on the couch and I end up finishing it.’ It was like, ‘Oh, my God, they’re just like us!’”

Iaconetti and Haibon met on the set of Paradise in 2015, but they did not start dating until earlier this year. He proposed in June during a special trip back to Mexico, which aired on the ABC reality series later in the summer.

“We want a yearlong engagement,” he told Us on Monday. “We’re getting married next August … in Rhode Island.”

The best kitten heels for women who hate stilettos

I remember the uni days when I dance all night in the most ridiculous high heels. Walking in them made me look like Bambi, and God knows how I managed to not end up in A&E once.

That’s not to say I hate stilettos, they can be beautiful on other women, but they are just not for me. So I must admit I welcomed the kitten heel trend with open arms last season.

They were everywhere on the catwalk, from Balenciaga to Prada and Gucci, Miu Miu and The Row. Even stiletto lover Christian Louboutin got in on the action, a sure sign that this trend is here to stay.

As last season’s Marks & Spencer kitten heel mules proved, this trend isn’t for everyone, however if you want to join me, this is how I’m wearing it.

How to wear kitten heels

You’d be better off asking, how don’t you wear kitten heels, that’s how versatile I’ve found them. They add an elegant touch to cropped jeans, go superbly with a silk midi dress and even better with a checked or corduroy suit. I would say the one rule I abide by is to show a little bit of ankle if you’re wearing kitten mules or sandals as otherwise it can look a little unflattering, and if you’re worried about being cold in winter, pair them with a metallic sock, or swap them for some kitten boots.

Kitten heel mules

These are by far my favourite, as a pretty velvet kitten mules goes with everything. Everyone on the high street has gotten in on the trend, with Mango and Zara serving up some great options.

Kitten heel boots

Kitten heel boots are the ideal solution to take the trend into autumn/winter. This season is of course all about animal print, so mix two trends in one by opting for a leopard print or snake print style.

Kitten heel shoes

I’m loving the bourgeoise take on the trend, in the form of low courts, preferably the tweed or slingback variety, as seen at Balenciaga, Mulberry and The Row. For a more modern approach, look to Neous and By Far.

Brett Kavanaugh and the Creation of the Rapist

I think feminism made Kavanaugh a rapist. I don’t mean to say that he didn’t commit vile and violating acts, or that he wouldn’t have been doing so by his own decision. It’s just that those acts, back then, were not yet attached to the species we now find so familiar—the rapist, the sexual harasser, the man who makes #MeToo possible.

Activists hold up police tape in front of the Supreme Court building. (takomabibelot / Creative Commons)

Michel Foucault taught us long ago that one is not born a sexual species, that instead one becomes one through a variety of discursive practices—expert knowledge, activist movements, laws and culture. That is why the homosexual did not exist until the 1800’s; even though bodies with similar naughty bits got together for pleasure long before then, they were not considered a particular sexual species, not yet. When, in Ancient Greece, men were the insertive partners with male citizen youth, they were not gay, nor were they straight; when Sambian boys fellate Sambian men in order to ingest their manhood and become men themselves, it is not, at least within their cultural context, pedophilia.

Acts of sexual violence and sexual assault seem to have been around since the beginning of recorded history—but those acts did not necessarily produce the rapist, despite producing misery for the women who were raped. But the current #MeToo movement—not to mention 50 years of feminist theorizing, legal intervention and activism around sexual violence—has resulted now in new sorts of sexual species. We have finally named the rapist, the workplace harasser, the serial jerk who ignores consent.

That leaves us with a few questions which we can never fully answer, such as: Why me?

I was 16, maybe 17. He was 18. I remember the party. I remember he tackled me onto the ground. I remember he was a high school wrestler. I remember I couldn’t get out from underneath him. I remember everyone laughing. I remember not having words like “attempted rape” for such behavior, because it was “funny,” and also this was someone I knew, someone I had dated in an earlier grade, someone who called me a “bitch dyke” when I finally did get out from underneath him by punching him in the throat.

I can still feel the shame and embarrassment of being almost raped in front of everyone I knew. I can still feel the anger at my girlfriends for doing nothing. But it never occurred to me that what he did was illegal or even outside the norms of typical high school jock behavior. Because it wasn’t.

Which leads to the next few questions: Is being a straight man the same as being a rapist? Does being a straight man demand you “overcome” the protests of women and girls, using violence if necessary? When people say “boys will be boys,” are they really telling us that violence is central to straightness? Not an aberration, but a norm?

White femininity demands sexual innocence, making it nearly impossible to say “yes” without being a whore; black womanhood is denied the possibility of innocence, making it impossible to say no. Angela Davis has already explained that rape laws were written for the “protection of men of the upper classes, whose daughters and wives might be assaulted.” All women—of all races and ethnicities, across sexualities and gender identities—know that sexual violence is a very real possibility.

If, in fact, violence is central to the way in which normative heterosexual males express their desires; if, in fact, it is not unusual or deviant in any way, but rather, universal and “normal”—then we absolutely must stop discussing this or that man as the problem and look more deeply at how all men must take responsibility for the rape culture they both create and perpetuate, even if primarily through their silence or lack of intervention. There can be no good guys in this scenario, because all guys are implicated—if not through their own violence, if only through their silence.

This is not the time to hear Mitch McConnell’s “concerns,” or even Chuck Schumer’s. To quote Senator Mazie Hirono: “I just want to say to the men of this country, just shut up.”

The last question is the one I hate asking the most, because I do not believe Brett Kavanaugh should be confirmed to a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land—but I am forced to ask it anyway, precisely because I suspect the answer is no.

Was my attacker a rapist? If, in 1983, a man jumped on a classmate at a party and tried to have sex with her in front of everyone; if, in 1983, everyone was laughing, and no one in the room, not even the young girl struggling underneath him, thought it was rape—is it? I’m trying to figure this one out, to let the unsettling idea that these acts, though vile and disgusting, might signify differently in different times and cultures.

No sexual act has meaning outside of culture. There is no straightness before the invention of the homosexual. There is no white femininity before the invention of Black womanhood. There is no rapist before the invention of a fully human woman, one who should have control over her own body. These things are opposite sides of the same coin; dependent on one another to make sense.

The notion of any woman as fully human is the yet unfinished project of feminism—and, much like the homosexual in 1883, the rapist in 1983 was blurrier, less clear to the observer, less stable as a knowable entity. He was not a rapist then, but I know he is a rapist now.

That is how sexual species get born. That is how women become fully human.

I’ve googled my attacker. I think he died this summer; he had kids and grandkids already. He wasn’t a judge or anyone important, just another guy in a sea of guys who express their desires in violent and violating ways. There’s no point naming him; he was Joe Average. Kavanaugh, however, could potentially control women’s bodies for a long time, so it’s important that we be able to name him for what he is now, to name what he did then and take it as seriously as our culture couldn’t before.

Even if Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez didn’t know it in 1983, rape is what it means to try and have sex with someone, and sexual assault is what it is when you push your genitals in someone’s face without their consent. Even if nobody told them then, we must be here to remind them now.

We must be here to believe them. We must be here to echo them when they name their experiences.

‘Venom’: 10 Crucial Terms You Need to Know Before You See It

On October 5, Tom Hardy (and a heavy dose of CGI) will bring the beloved Spider-Man villain Venom to the big screen. For die-hard comics fans, bringing Venom to life in his own film has been decades in the making. For the casual moviegoer, however, deciphering the complex mythology surrounding alien symbiotes and shadowy foundations might seem daunting, to say the least. To help, here are some names and concepts likely to play a role in Venom.

1. The Symbiote Costume

Spider-Man in Venom suit
Goth Spider-Man — skull rings sold separately.

In Secret Wars, Spider-Man — along with other heroes and villains — is whisked away to a far-off planet by the all-powerful Beyonder. There, a machine Spider-Man discovers produces a black sphere that attaches to him and turns into a costume, a black version of his traditional red-and-blue threads. Not only does it take the form of any clothing Peter imagines, it also enhances his strength and ability. Spidey makes the strange material his new costume.

Back on Earth, the costume begins to misbehave — taking over Spider-Man’s body while he sleeps and attacking people on its own. Peter discovers the costume is actually a living, sentient alien attempting to bond permanently with him. He tries to rid himself of the costume but it refuses to let Peter go. Knowing that sonic waves hurt it, Spider-Man is able to seemingly destroy it by overloading it with the sounds of church bells.

2. Venom

Venom looming over Spider-Man
What’s black and white and… never mind.

The symbiote manages to survive in the church until disgraced reporter Eddie Brock — who blames Spider-Man for ruining his career — happens upon it. Sensing the shared animosity toward Spider-Man, the symbiote bonds with Brock, forming the creature known as Venom. Venom’s combined hatred of Spider-Man causes him to attack Spider-Man and terrorize his loved ones.

Eventually, Spidey stops Venom and an uneasy truce is formed. Venom agrees to end his vendetta if Spider-Man agrees to leave him alone. Venom eventually becomes something of a vigilante, returning to San Francisco and protecting the homeless there. As an anti-hero, Venom avoids killing innocents but has no problem taking the lives of those who would seek to harm them.

3. Klyntar

The Klyntar
It’s impossible to get a hotel during the Symbiote Convention.

The Venom symbiote is actually a member of an alien species known as the Klyntar who hail from the planet of the same name. Symbiotes, as a species, are shape-shifting alien beings who seek hosts with which they form a symbiotic bond. Created by the malevolent god Knull, the Klyntar rebelled and imprisoned him on Klyntar, a planet of their own creation.

The Klyntar bond with host species to form a new entity, in much the way Spider-Man’s symbiote costume bonded with Eddie Brock to form Venom. Each host creates a distinct entity, and over the centuries, the Klyntar’s symbiotic bonds have added much to the Klyntar essence, including alien concepts such as honor and peace. Because of this, not all symbiotes are malicious, but even the “good” ones are the product of an evil god.

4. Knull

Knull, God of the Klyntar.
Knull, God of the Klyntar.

The God of the Symbiotes, Knull is a powerful being older than the universe itself. He possesses godlike powers and uses them against the Celestials, who were busy creating the universe. He even created a sword, All-Black, from his shadow. Angered that darkness would be broken by the light of creation, he wages war against the other gods.

To aid in his fight, Knull creates an army of symbiotes to lay waste to countless worlds. After a battle with Thor, Knull finds himself trapped in the symbiote dragon Grendel, breaking his hold on the symbiotes he’d created. The symbiotes then turn on their god and imprison Knull’s body on their homeworld.

5. Symbiote Imperium

Symbiote Imperium soldier
Soldier of the Imperium.

After freeing themselves from the control of Knull, the Klyntar hive-mind, influenced by the many benevolent hosts the symbiotes had bonded with, decides to leave their dark past behind and become a force for good in the universe. However, the Klyntar with corrupt hosts reject this idea and are shunned from the hive mind.

The renegade symbiotes form the Symbiote Imperium, an army of destruction designed to continue the Klyntar’s original purpose of bringing death and devastation to the universe. So successful is the Imperium that the name Klyntar becomes synonymous with evil, despite the existence of so many peaceful symbiotes. Venom was once a member of the Imperium.

6. Carnage

Carnage
He makes Venom seem easygoing.

Venom’s arch-nemesis (outside of Spider-Man), Carnage is “born” when the Venom symbiote breaks Eddie Brock out of prison. Demerged from the symbiote, Brock is sent to a prison for non-powered humans where he shares a cell with vicious serial killer Cletus Kasady. Among other crimes, Cletus killed his grandmother, tortured his mother’s dog, and burned down an orphanage.

In the haste to escape, Venom leaves a piece of itself behind. That piece bonds with Kasady, forming the symbiote known as Carnage. Far more violent and powerful than any other symbiote, Carnage’s bloodlust leads him on a vicious murder spree. Only by joining forces are Spider-Man and Venom able to defeat the deadly symbiote. Carnage’s presence in Venom has not been officially announced, but fans are hopeful he’ll make an appearance, even if it’s only a cameo.

7. Riot

Riot
Just your everyday symbiote throwdown.

A symbiote created from the Venom symbiote, it originally bonds with mercenary Trevor Cole. Reportedly the film’s main antagonist, Riot instead bonds with Dr. Carlton Drake, who created Riot and its siblings in the comics. In Venom: Lethal Protector, the Life Foundation creates five symbiote “children” from extracts of the Venom symbiote. Riot proves to be the most violent and unstable of the bunch.

The symbiotes are to serve as the guardians of the Life Foundation. Unfortunately for the foundation, the symbiotes choose to test their newly acquired abilities on Spider-Man and a very peeved Venom. Ultimately the symbiotes, including Riot, are artificially aged to dust by Venom, and their powerless hosts are caught in an explosion. Eventually, though, both the symbiotes and the hosts return, because comics.

8. Dr. Carlton Drake and the Life Foundation

Dr. Carlton Drake in front of members of the Life Foundation.
“This probably won’t end in our violent deaths.”

The Life Foundation, led by Carlton Drake (played by Riz Ahmed in the film), is a survivalist organization convinced that doomsday is right around the corner, particularly in the form of nuclear holocaust. The foundation dedicates itself to preparing for that outcome, building fallout shelters to protect the wealthy elite. Through his foundation, Drake has stolen, kidnapped, and even murdered to further his group’s goals.

Drake seeks to employ superpowered individuals to protect the foundation’s clients, kidnapping them if necessary. In San Francisco, Drake and his partner, Roland Treece, attempt to steal gold buried under the city. Drake uses a captured Venom to create five new symbiotes — Riot, Scream, Agony, Phage, and Lasher.

9. Genetic Memory and Parasitic Inheritance

Venom's human host talking to onlookers.
Be careful who you loan your sentient clothes to.

All symbiotes gain abilities through Parasitic Inheritance, the ability to mimic powers and skills through interfacing with the host’s genetic code. In the case of Venom, it was able to mimic Spider-Man’s wall-crawling powers and even his web shooters. When the symbiote passed to Eddie Brock, it retained these abilities, gaining new ones as it passed from host to host.

Genetic Memory, in the case of the symbiotes, refers to the ability to access information by tapping into the memories of its host. It can even recall memories of previous hosts, much to Spider-Man’s dismay. Venom was able to track down Spider-Man — and terrify Mary Jane — because the symbiote knew his secret identity from having already bonded with him.

10. Venom: Lethal Protector

Venom Lethal Protector cover
Venom’s debut solo outing.

After Venom’s immensely popular run as a Spider-Man villain and occasional reluctant ally, Marvel gave Venom his own limited series, the eight-part Venom: Lethal Protector. The series sees Eddie Brock return to his hometown of San Francisco, having given up his vendetta against Spider-Man. While there, he turns to vigilantism, particularly helping a group of homeless people living under the city.

Venom soon runs afoul of the Life Foundation, who capture him and extract five “offspring” from the symbiote. These new symbiotes bond with volunteers to become the guardians of the Life Foundation. With Spider-Man’s help, Venom defeats the guardians and ruins the foundation’s plans to steal an underground gold deposit. The film is reportedly based in part on this mini-series.

Hedi Slimane Gives First Interview At Celine

PARIS – Hedi Slimane has given his first interview since his nomination at Celine to French daily newspaper “Le Figaro.” The famously discreet designer spoke to journalist Laurence Benaïm in Tuesday’s issue of the newspaper.
The interview comes days before his debut collection at Celine, which will be unveiled on Sept. 28 during Paris Fashion Week.
“I am delighted to come back to a French house, a tradition, professions, ateliers,” said Slimane. “Paris is the best at ‘handmade,’ which is incredibly chic. Beyond the virtuosity of the ateliers, this savoir-faire is due to a state of mind, a way of working, the immediate understanding of a model, a particular feeling that can only be found in Paris.”
He explains that an additional atelier has been added to the 17th century mansion that houses Celine’s headquarters, the Hôtel Colbert de Torcy in the 2nd arrondissment, which will be dedicated to the creation of Celine’s first men’s wear line.
Upon arriving at Celine, Slimane chose to rebrand the maison by taking the French accent off the house’s name.
“It’s in no way about marking my territory, quite the contrary,” said the designer, adding that it was his way of “putting the church back at the center of the

Losing my dad felt like losing my connection to my Latinx culture

Losing my dad felt like losing my connection to my Latinx culture

Losing my dad felt like losing my connection to my Latinx culture

September 15th through October 15th is Latinx Heritage Month.

Spending time with my dad in our Southern Texas town of Corpus Christi was always an adventure. Whether it was an early morning trip to the neighborhood carniceria to get barbacoa for breakfast or a visit to his favorite nursery to check out the perennials, my dad made everything about our culture feel accessible to me. He could walk into any space and instantly be at home. His habit of talking to every person he met in his friendly, fast-flowing mix of Spanish and English helped to quickly endear him to others. Strangers became his friends, friends became his family, and family was something to be treasured above all else. My father’s ability to make friends wherever he went created so many adventures for his children. And when I accompanied him to these places—a flower shop, a panderia, or some distant relative’s home—I felt like I had a touch of the magic he possessed, too.

Of course, it wasn’t technically magic that opened these worlds to my father. It was his birthright and his culture—an ancestry built on the offspring of indigenous Northern Americans of South Texas and Mexico and their Spanish colonizers.

A background rich in color and flavor, toil and subjugation, mysticism and piety. All places linked by taste, sound, and a mother tongue.

He made me feel perfectly accepted and comfortable in his heritage, but being of mixed blood meant that I never fully felt entitled to those sacred spaces and inherited rights without my father as my guide.

I didn’t anticipate losing him so soon.

His initial cancer diagnosis was dire, but optimistic PET scans gave us every reason to be hopeful. But when he got the news that the cancer had spread to his bones, we could no longer postpone the inevitable. Dad left us less than 3 weeks later.

Without my father, that magic was gone. Once I lost that physical connection to him upon his death, I was cut off from his endless love and support. The spark he brought to my life simply by being in it left me suddenly. But it wasn’t just him that disappeared.

I lost a connection to the Latinx community that I felt certain I could only get through my dad.

That specific hurt feels all the more noticeable during this time of year. September 15th marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, and with it comes the reminder of all the adventures I shared with my father—along with the ones that never got to happen.

But if I take time to be introspective, those feelings of loss as a Latina didn’t start with the death of my dad.

As a mixed person, I’ve never felt fully entitled to my Latinidad. Even at my most suntanned, I’ve always been fair skinned. “Weda,” a word used by Mexicans for light skinned Europeans and Americans, was a common nickname, but anyone who knows our culture knows that it’s not a term of endearment. It’s a label of otherness.

Besides not “looking the part,” I also only understood enough Spanish to follow orders, and only spoke enough to answer back. My dad always joked that he didn’t teach my sister and me the language so that we’d never have the words to disobey our white mother.

I know his hesitation had more to do with what he experienced as a child during the mandated integration of schools in South Texas. Texas was especially late to desegregation—the last school not complying until the 1980s—and Latinx students paid the price. Spanish may have flowed easily for dad as an adult, but during his elementary school years, his culture was suppressed. He was forced to assimilate or face punishment.

Belittled by teachers and administration, Latinx children—like Black children during desegregation—were given the least desirable accommodations and tools. Growing up in an educational system that saw them as less than their white classmates, my dad and the rest of the Latinx student body were devalued because of their heritage, families, and homes.

I wonder if he thought of his own forced assimilation when he spoke to me as a child, when I cried about not fitting in to our predominantly Latinx neighborhood, when I begged him to help me learn how to roll the double r’s in our last name—a goal we both knew I’d never master because of my lisp. Did he ever watch me and my sister lip synching and dancing to Selena, and realize that his school’s assimilation practices might not have worked as well as they’d hoped?

I never had to prove my Latinidad to my dad. It was never a prerequisite to get his advice or go on his adventures; he never placed limitations on his love based on how “Latina” I could be. While the physical connection to my dad is gone, it feels like it’s still there—like a phantom limb. It’s funny, in a heartbreaking sort of way; I can still feel the love and acceptance flowing through it, from him to me.

And, if I can still feel that, perhaps the connection to my Latinx culture isn’t as far away as it feels.

Jimmy Kimmel Wants to Cut Brett Kavanaugh’s Penis Off

ABC

Jimmy Kimmel came out guns blazing against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Monday night after a second woman came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct over the weekend. “Only 12 more and he can run for president,” he joked.

Since he tapes his show on west coast time, Kimmel may have been the only late-night host to include clips from Kavanaugh’s bizarre Fox News interview in which he defended himself against the allegations by explaining that he was a virgin through high school and into college.

“Thank you for admitting that,” Kimmel said. “He was a virgin until many years after. So if he doesn’t get to be on the Supreme Court, maybe he’ll be The Bachelor.” This led the host to reports that Kavanaugh plans to use calendars he kept in high school to dispute the claim that he was at the party where Christine Blasey Ford said he tried to rape her. “What 17-year-old keeps calendars of his social engagements?” he asked. “No wonder he was a virgin.”

Halle Berry And Lena Waithe To Executive Produce ‘Boomerang’ Sequel For BET

Halle Berry and Lena Waithe, two women with an Oscar and an Emmy respectively between them, have signed on as executive producers for a series based on the 1992 rom-com Boomerang, that starred Berry and Eddie Murphy. Murphy played Marcus Graham a self-centered executive working for a Black-owned cosmetics company while Berry, as Angela, was his love interest. Robin Givens played Jacqueline Boyer, Marcus boss and girlfriend, whose dating-like-a man tactics led to the relationship ‘boomerang’ of the movie’s title.

The movie also spawned the million-selling Boomerang soundtrack that introduced Toni Braxton to the public.

Produced by BET Networks and Paramount Television, the 10-episode half-hour series will premiere in 2019 on BET. This new series will follow the lives of Jacqueline Boyer’s son and Marcus and Angela Graham’s daughter as they try to step out of their parents’ shadows and make a legacy of their own.

“I’m thrilled to team up with Lena on this project as she is without a doubt a leading voice of her generation and a trail blazer in her own right. I’m truly excited to be a part of bringing this iconic and beloved film to the small screen,” said Berry.

“This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story,” said Waithe. “There’s no point in trying to remake a classic. It can’t be done. So we want to create something fresh that speaks to a new generation. We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world we’ve created!”

Berry will next be seen in John Wick: Chapter 3 as an assassin named “Sofia” opposite Keanu Reeves and Anjelica Huston. She recently announced she’s making her directorial debut with Bruised, in which she will also star. The movie is about the world of MMA fighters.

Waithe, the creator of the Showtime series The Chi won an Emmy for the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None, co-written with show star and creator Aziz Ansari.

No word on whether any of the movie’s original actors including Berry, Murphy, Grace Jones, Chris Rock or Robin Givens will make any guest appearances.

Sixers’ New GM Elton Brand Will Bring Prestige, Trust Back To Position

Duke University produces some of the greatest basketball players, but the thread of intellectual prowess that runs through generations of these true student-athletes is even more remarkable. Duke basketball players become college and pro coaches, NBA executives and even General Managers.

Elton Brand is an African-American who not only took advantage of his opportunity to play ball at one of the nation’s flagship universities but parlayed a potent education into becoming one of two African-American general managers — three of color — in the NBA today.

The Twitter burner account scandal that led to Bryan Colangelo’s resignation — a scandal draped in the attempted character assassination of African-American employees and franchise players — has manifested itself in Brand, a person of color, getting a rare opportunity to lead one of the NBA’s 30 franchises. He joins Knicks GM Scott Perry and Toronto’s Masai Ujiri as men of such distinction.

Choosing Brand is a shrewd move for a franchise that needs to capture the moment that the city is in. Philadelphia has become the center of sports blackness, from the triumphant struggle of rapper Meek Mill to avoid unjust incarceration to the outspoken, politically conscious players on the Eagles Super Bowl-winning team, to the burgeoning wave of interest created by young NBA Kings Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. An infusion of young, freakishly-talented blood has made Philly an elite franchise again and the poster child for why tanking wins, having accumulated a roster of captivating all-world talent for the first time since the Allen Iverson Era.

Brand, who already proved his savvy as VP of Basketball Operations and GM of Philly’s G-League affiliate, replaces Brett Brown, who was serving as interim GM.

“He spent two years in this organization and has been around this organization,” said NBA TV analyst Steve Smith. “When (he was a player in Philly) and they wanted to bring a vet back for those guys… they brought in Elton Brand to be at the end of the bench and console them in tough moments and consult with those guys and be a big brother type.

Success maketh another sequel. Kingsman 3, revealed last year as being a possibility, has now been officially greenlit for a 2019 release. While the previous installment, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, was not as well-received by critics as the original, Kingsman: The Secret Service (53% vs. 74% on Rotten Tomatoes), the sequel did about match the first movie's worldwide gross ($ 411 million vs. $ 414 million). Doing a third (and more) is obviously a good decision by Fox.

With regard to African-Americans, the picture is even more grim. Only 36% of African-American adults have investments in stocks.

Yet, throughout history stocks have proven to be one of the best tools for creating and growing wealth, so anyone who is serious about improving their financial situation should definitely include investments in the stock market as part of their overall financial plan.

WHY SHOULD WE GET SERIOUS ABOUT INVESTING OUR MONEY?

To put this in some perspective, let’s use Nike for example, since there’s been lots of talk about either buying Nike products or Nike stock after the company released its new ad campaign featuring former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

If we go back to January of 1985, roughly the time that Nike released the first Air Jordans to the public, shares of Nike were trading at about 13 cents a share. 13 cents!

At that time a pair of those Air Jordans would have cost you $ 65.

Well, if you spent that money on those Air Jordans back in 1985, today you have…well…nothing. I’m sure those shoes have long since been replaced. If you had instead put the $ 65 in a checking or savings account, and earned 1% per year, you would have about $ 90.

Today Nike shares are trading at $ 85.55. That’s a 69,000% increase!

So, if you had taken that $ 65 and bought Nike stock in January of 1985, today you’d have more than $ 45,000!

And before anyone dismisses this example as a one-off success, take note of this:

Between 1991 and today, a period that includes both the dot-com bust and the financial crisis, stocks in general (as measured by the S&P 500) are up more than 700%, while housing prices have increased just 164%.

Most of us simply cannot create the type of wealth that will truly move the needle for ourselves and our families by relying on our own wages or savings accounts alone.

You have to make your money work harder for you.

And speaking of working hard, Nike shares are up about 5% since they released the ad with Kaepernick, which translates to a $ 6 billion dollar increase in Nike’s market value.

How’s that boycott working out?

THAT SOUNDS GREAT, BUT IT ALSO SEEMS COMPLICATED TO A LOT OF PEOPLE. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY FOR PEOPLE TO GET STARTED?

You know, when a lot of us think of investing, we think of movies like Trading Places, and we think that we have to invest in complex things like pork bellies and soybeans.

But in reality, investing doesn’t have to be that complicated. I always suggest that people start by investing in what they know.

For example, I suggest that anyone interested in getting started with investing begin by going through their bank statement for the last few months and taking note of the top 20 places that they spend money.

Of those 20 places, I can almost guarantee that at least 10 of them will be public companies. (Think Apple, McDonalds, Wal-Mart, Netflix, etc.)Those 10 companies become your short list for companies that you could potentially invest in.

Now to be clear, just because you know the company, doesn’t mean that it will be a good investment. At one point we all knew Blockbuster, but of course that company is no longer around.

But by starting with companies that you know well, and doing additional research, you’ll give yourself a much better chance at success.

ONCE I KNOW WHAT COMPANIES I LIKE, WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

The last step is to open an account at a brokerage firm like Fidelity, Charles Schwab, eTrade, TD Ameritrade, etc.

They are all reputable firms and have pretty low costs.

You could also try an app like Robinhood, which doesn’t charge any trading commissions, and there’s another site called Stockpile which is great because it allows you to buy fractional shares of stock in case the amount you’re starting with isn’t enough to buy a whole share.

(So if you don’t have $ 1,900 for one share of Amazon, Stockpile allows you to start with, say, $ 20 of Amazon and you can build from there.)

But the most important thing is not the amount you’re starting with, but rather building the habit of investing regularly and staying on top of your investments.

That’s how you build real wealth over time. If you’re truly serious about learning how to make your money work harder, I’ve created a free Intro to Investing training video to help you get started.

You can find the free training video at http://www.robwilson.tv/investing

Shailene Woodley and Ben Volavola’s Dior Show Date

LET’S DANCE: “It’s so hard to see in here, it’s so dark,” said Blake Lively, blindly making her way into the Dior show on Monday at the Paris Longchamp hippodrome. The lights had been shut off in the indoor venue, with rows of beams creating pools of light across the floor. Peering across the space, an excited Lively said it was her first Dior show in around a decade, but the actress, who plays a bigwig fashion p.r. in her latest film, “A Simple Favor,” looked at home in her surroundings. Asked if she was feeling the part, she replied: “Oh, no, no, no, I would not like to do that. They do get a lot of free stuff, though, so that part sounds fun.”
A few rows down, Shailene Woodley was frantically texting her partner, Fijian rugby player Ben Volavola, to make sure he made it to the show on time. The actress said she recently moved to Paris to be with Volavola, who plays for French club Union Bordeaux Bègles. “I’m constantly taking notes on what these beautiful Parisians are wearing,” she said of her new life in the fashion capital.

Activists to NFL: ‘Deposit Funds Into Black-Owned Banks’

The Seattle Medium is reporting that activists in Seattle are calling for the NFL and Seattle Seahawks owner Paul Allen, to deposit 10% of all revenue as well as one-third of the funds making up player pensions, into black-owned banks.

The demands are reportedly spurred by the recent news that Allen, who also co-founded Microsoft, donated $ 100,000 to the Republican Party to help it retain control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. According to Federal Election Commission findings, it is the largest political donation Allen has made to an individual or committee.

“I have been out here protesting the economic injustices that have occurred in professional sports and to add insult to injury the owner of the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trailblazers, Paul Allen donated $ 100,000 to the Republican Party so they can maintain control of the House of Representatives,” said activist Eddie Rye Jr. to The Seattle Medium.

“ESPN, CBS, were bidding over $ 1 billion dollars to have the broadcast rights of NFL games. So out of all the money being generated and the NFL being 70 % black, none of that money is coming back to the black community,” he said.

Rye and several retired NFL players are part of the movement, NFL/Black Community Revenue Sharing Program, to reap benefits for the black community from the economic windfalls black athletes’ talents have provided sports leagues and team owners.

Many black athletes have been inspired to engage in activism since Colin Kaepernick shook up the sports scene by protesting racial injustice with his #TakeaKnee campaign.

In what many considered a bold and risky public relations move, Nike recently made Kaepernick the face if its newest “Just Do It” ad campaign. The decision to use Kaepernick was financially advantageous to the sports apparel company. Ten days after the ad debuted on social media, Nike stock rose to an all-time high on Sept. 13 at $ 83.90 and then closed at $ 83.49 on Friday afternoon. That’s a 4% increase since the ad’s release on Sept. 3, according to CBS News. In addition, Nike’s online sales jumped nearly 31% from Sept. 2 through Sept. 4, which is nearly double the profit that the company garnered during the same period in 2017, according to a research report by Edison Trends.

Michael Kors Holdings Limited has named Andrea Pesaresi president of Michael Kors Men’s, effective Oct. 15.
He succeeds Don Witkowski, who passed away in June, and will report to John D. Idol, chairman and chief executive officer.
Pesaresi was most recently ceo of Philippe Model, but prior to that, he spent 25 years at Ermenegildo Zegna, where his most recent role was brand director of Z Zegna and Licensing, a post that encompassed product development, brand strategy, international expansion and marketing. Pesaresi joined Philippe Model, an Italian sneaker brand, at the end of 2016.
“Andrea has been in the industry for 30 years and comes to us with extensive knowledge of the evolving luxury men’s marketplace,” Idol said. “Andrea will provide the necessary leadership to enable us to achieve our goal of developing the Michael Kors men’s wear business to $ 1 billion in revenue.”
The company declined to say how large the men’s business is today, but in the first-quarter earnings call in early August, Idol said that while men’s is “still small to the total company, it continues to grow.” He cited strength in logo sportswear “for Father’s Day gifting, particularly the Greenwich polo and our knit logo baseball jacket,” along with “refined pieces such

Dior RTW Spring 2019

Guests arriving to the venue — the storybook magical grounds of the Longchamp racetrack — came upon a huge, minimalist square construction. Its facade flaunted woman-power signage of the sort that has become a Maria Grazia Chiuri signature at Dior. This time the quotes were from renegade choreographers, among them Pina Bausch (“Dance, Dance, Otherwise We Are Lost”) and Sharon Eyal (“The Story Comes From Inside the Body”).
Point made: This collection would be about dance, a natural topic for fashion and one which many designers have mined. “Dance and fashion define the body and, through discipline, teach us to own it,” read the show notes.
To manifest the connection, Chiuri commissioned a compelling new work from Eyal, whose dancers opened the show and performed throughout. Exquisite. And also problematic, at least if you’re a dress that wants to be noticed. Over the years, fashion has seen some seriously theatrical presentations. But when the Instagram-worthy theatrics, whether impending shark attack or bodies in remarkable motion, are separate and apart from the clothes, they can distract from what’s supposed to be the event’s primary purpose. That’s what happened here. (It didn’t help that the dancers were better-lit than the models.)
As for the clothes, this

Two Female Bachelor: Vietnam Contestants Leave Rose Ceremony Together in Surprising Twist

In a never-before-seen twist for The Bachelor franchise, two female contestants competing on the Vietnamese version of the show left the rose ceremony together.

After contestant Minh Thu was left without a rose by bachelor Nguyen Quoc Trung, she professed her love for fellow contestant Truc Nhu before asking her to ditch the show to be with her.

“I went into this competition to find love and I’ve found that love for myself, but it isn’t with you. It’s with someone else,” Thu tearfully told Trung before walking over to Nhu. “Come home with me. Come home with me. Yeah?”

Nhu then explained how she was feeling to Trung, who pleaded with her to stay. “I’m sorry. I really want to get to know you because you’re someone who made me feel special and I haven’t felt that way in a long time,” Nhu said.

“I want to ask, if you decide this, would you feel regretful? This doesn’t change my decision,” he replied. “I’m not going to give this rose to anyone else. You only get one chance in this life, and you need to take it. Only you, not anyone else. I want to let you know that I think you’ll have regret if you continue with what you are about to say.”

Thu and Nhu eventually walked out of the ceremony together. However, People reports that Nhu decided to return following a heart-to-heart with Trung. “After talking to Trung, I’ve changed my mind to accept this rose and continue this journey,” she said.

The Games We’re Looking Forward to in the Next Few Months

Every now and then we look forward, to the tune of a few months, and try to discern the best of the bunch. This will naturally be an extra special edition of this staple. Not only are we getting into the typical holiday madness, but this seems to be an extra busy year, full of quality.

OK, it kind of feels like we say that every year, but 2018 marks the return of two franchises that are far from annual appearances: Red Dead and Fallout. Those, on top of the already released Monster Hunter World, Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, make this a stellar year already.

And that’s before we even take into account the reliable regulars we’ll see soon. Even familiar faces like FIFA can put up a surprisingly thoughtful entry, raising the quality of the year as a whole. We’re yet to see how Call of Duty and Battlefield will fare, but we’ll definitely be playing to find out.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The biggest no-brainer in a list populated mostly with no-brainers. Red Dead Redemption 2 is actually Rockstar’s first game on this generation of hardware. That’s how long it’s been, and fans are all kinds of keen.

We’ve played a couple of hours, and walked away with some thoughts about the tiny, conversation-worthy moments the game is full of, as well as seeing how the new horse system works, and why maintaining your guns is a lot more important this time around.

Fallout 76

It almost feels as if the franchise itself has been locked underground for ages, about to step into the light again. This is hallowed ground though, because Fallout 76 is going back to the very first vault that opened on Reclamation Day.

As for the new features, though? It’s not exactly classic Fallout. This newer game is an online experience, in which everyone you encounter is a real player. You’ll be able to turn this off, but the game is designed with cooperation and PvP in mind.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

After a hiatus of a few years, the Assassin’s Creed franchise was back with a bang last year in Origins. Now, Odyssey is a game that very much follows suit. It’ll use the same combat system that doesn’t choreograph the whole fight for you. If you miss, it’ll let you miss.

That said, we’ve been looking at the skills present in Odyssey, and they look a lot more inventive and outside-the-box. You have Ghost Arrows that can go through walls, and certain shots that do +800% Hunter Damage.

We’re not sure what we can do with all that yet, but we’re keen to find out what interesting assassinations we can pull off.

Darksiders III

Consider the size of Darksiders III, there are some very big shoes to fill here. The action franchise follows various horsepeople of the apocalypse, making it as if each game features a different RPG class. Now that we’ve seen the tanky War, and the roguey Death, it’s on to Fury — a chain-wielding warrior capable of Devil May Cry-esque air combos.

You can check out what it’s like to fight the first boss in the above video, or in our preview. Here’s hoping there’s a similar variety in the gameplay, such as the Shadow of the Colossus moments from the last game.

Soulcalibur 6

Also known as “The Geralt one,” this fighting game is bringing in the star of such games as The Witcher and The Witcher 2, and believe it or not, The Witcher 3. The White Wolf will face off against series regulars like Kilik and Mitsurugi on cramped platforms where falling off is absolutely possible. All done with an epic voiceover to remind you how epicly epic your fights are.

We’ve previously written about how we’re not the biggest fan of the Critical Edge system the game brings in, but it shouldn’t affect serious play too much. It’s moreso an unnecessary nod to newer players that oversimplifies the Soulcalibur system. It sure looks purdy, but it’s not a great fit.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the Soulcalibur 6 fighting system will be fantastic. We can’t wait to engage in footsies and distance management with Kilik’s staff. Not to mention this one comes out a few months ahead of Dead or Alive 6.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

You knew it was coming, and it finally happened. Battle royale has made its way into both Call of Duty and Battlefield. Call of Duty will always be Call of Duty, and it’s not known as the most innovative FPS game. But Black Ops 4 does take place in our favourite setting: Not World War II.

Early impressions of the new Blackout mode (see: battle royale) have been positive, and it features several older CoD maps stitched into one expanse of high-pitched VOIP and teenage teabaggers. The subseries has come a long way from asking Mason what the numbers mean, but there are always some highly polished campaigns to experience here, and we’ll be doing just that.

Battlefield V

As the perfect segue, Battlefield V won’t feature a traditional campaign — instead, it’s continuing its popular war stories mode, exploring the lesser known tales of World War II. This shooter will focus on areas like Norway or Northern Africa, as opposed to retreading the D-Day landing and conflicts over Paris.

We should re-emphasise how bored we are of World War II, if only to give our next point more weight. When playing Battlefield V, we were completely sold. Hate the setting, but loved the game. It was a lot of fun, and it didn’t take long to realise it.

Building fortifications was somewhat akin to Enemy Territory. You can only build them in pre-approved spots, but the maps are much more open than Enemy Territory‘s ever were. That makes us pretty excited about what routes and lines of sight you can gain or obstruct when trying to get the advantage. There’ll be a lot to learn about any given capture point.

Artifact Valve card game Richard Garriot
Card combat takes place across three separate lanes in Artifact.

Artifact

Valve’s card game based on DOTA 2 is slated for late November, which doesn’t necessarily mean Artifact will actually come out then, but probably. The highly anticipated collectible card game is being designed by the original creator of Magic: The Gathering, Richard Garfield — lending some impressive weight to a project that’ll be entering an already crowded and competitive space.

While Magic remains the least random of all the major CCGs out there, Garfield has defended randomness in videogames and will be incorporating some Random Number Generation (RNG). Much less than the norm established by Hearthstone, mind you. But there’s an inherent randomness after each round, when creeps will spawn in two of the three lanes.

Its three-lane system is an extension of Legends‘ two-lane system, and fits the idea of being based on a MOBA quite well. We’re expecting good things, and hope the RNG is kept to a minimum to keep it competition-worthy.

Phoenix Point

There are a lot of X-COM-likes coming up. We’ve already had Phantom Doctrine to enjoy, and Phoenix Point together with Mutant Year Zero will well and truly scratch that itch. Phoenix Point involves Julian Gallop, designer of the original X-COM, and we were fortunate to catch up with them to talk about the game’s direction.

Thanks to the wonders of crowdfunding, it’s already wildly successful. There’ll be a more involved and strategic metagame on the world map, and you’ll be able to target specific body parts, Fallout style.

This one was pretty hard when we played it earlier this year. Player after player would try and fail the demo mission at the Game Developer’s Conference. They may have tweaked that by now, and expect difficulty settings — but either way, it’s going to be an incredible timesink.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Another game offering top-down, turn-based tactics, Mutant Year Zero is based on a European board game. Former Hitman developers have joined the project to really nail the stealth portions, and the result is very interesting.

Mutant Year Zero seamlessly switches between real-time stealth and turn-based combat. As soon as you’re “discovered,” the game transitions to turns. Anything you can do beforehand to give yourself an advantage is fair game, but it’ll be a stealth challenge — and you won’t want to get caught out in the wrong spot.

This one also has an interesting way of dealing with RNG. Die rolls still affect whether or not you’ll hit your enemy, but modifiers have drastic effects. The extreme degree of this means you’ll likely see a lot of 0% and 100% indicators. If the shot is 40-60%, you know it must be seriously close. Anything you can do to help yourself first, like destroying the target’s cover, can bump you back up to that 100%.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Oh don’t you worry, we didn’t forget. The series that dominates every fighting game tournament, numbers-wise, is getting its Switch version. We’ve had a play of this one too, and had a lot of fun with the Splatoon character.

You can expect a steady trickle of character and stage announcements until December. After which, every videogame bar and event will have Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the projector, because hey, give the people what they want.

Watch Exclusive 'Night School' Clip: I Got Learnin' Herpes

Kevin Hart has been on a great roll, giving one winning, very funny performance after another over the past several years. In Night School, his latest comedy, he runs smack into the force of nature that is Tiffany Haddish, who has been burning up the screen something fierce herself lately.

Our exclusive clip turns the spotlight on Hart, one of a group of misfits who must attend adult classes, hoping against hope to pass the GED exam. Haddish plays a teacher who calmly explains to Hart what…

Power Hair Still Rules on Wall Street

Sunset Boulevard/Corbis via Getty

“If you wanna be taken seriously, you need serious hair.”

So speaketh Tess McGill, the inimitable heroine of Mike NicholsWorking Girl. The character, played by Melanie Griffith, utters this line right before taking a pair of scissors to her long, crimped ringlets. (The line was written by a man, screenwriter Kevin Wade.)

Tess emerges from the scene with a short, sleek, androgynous bob. Along with her plucky willpower (and the help of a man), this power hair propels her from secretarial oblivion to corner office with a window in just under two hours’ runtime.

Kylie Jenner’s Secret Pregnancy Gave Kris ‘Anxiety’ — But It Was a ‘Such a Positive Experience’

At long last, Kylie Jenner‘s pregnancy is being openly discussed on Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Sunday’s episode chronicled the new mom welcoming her first child, daughter Stormi, with rapper Travis Scott on Feb. 1. When the day arrived, Kylie chose to have just her mom Kris Jenner and sister Khloé Kardashian in the delivery room with her, in addition to Scott. And while the other sisters may have been disappointed to be left out, they were mostly relieved that they wouldn’t be blamed if the secret got out. (Though PEOPLE first confirmed the news of the baby on the way in September 2017, Kylie, 21, didn’t publicly address it until after she gave birth.)

“Kylie is about to have her baby and it’s pretty crazy that it really hasn’t been confirmed,” said Kourtney, 39. “So I don’t want to be the one with the info, or getting blamed for someone finding out the secret.”

Kim, 37, marveled that her little sister had some amazing friends for having kept the news under wraps all those months.

“Can you believe that Kylie got out of the hospital with not one report?” she said. “Now Caitlyn can never say we have big mouths and we leak everything. We kept that a secret!”

Momager Kris, 62, admitted keeping a lid on the news wasn’t easy.

“That was a lot of anxiety for me,” she said. “People were saying, ‘We’re going to post, we’re going to announce,’ and I’m like, ‘No!’ But she did it perfectly and it was such a positive experience for her.”

“Totally,” Kim said. “Everyone was just like, ‘Okay, we get it. We get why you kept it private.’ … Kylie’s always wanted to be a mom, so this is really exciting for her. She just didn’t want anyone changing her happy moment and her happy pregnancy, so I’m really proud of her that she stuck to her guns and was able to tell her story her way.”

And Kylie, who said she was “really doing this for myself,” said the experience couldn’t have gone any better.

“I like ” she said. “I miss it. I had the easiest pregnancy ever. You never feel alone — I was really sad to not be pregnant anymore.”

At the end of the day, no one was more proud than Kris, who delivered the baby herself.

“It’s only been a couple of days since Kylie had baby Stormi, and I can already tell that Kylie is going to be the most amazing mom and is so in love with her baby,” she gushed.

But at the same time, the momager was going through a challenging time with a different daughter.

“My relationship with Kourtney over the years has been kind of fabulous, but lately there’s definitely a shift,” she said. “I really don’t know where this is coming from and it makes me really, really sad. I just wish she would make an effort to treat me the way I would love to be treated. I love her so much. She’s my firstborn daughter.”

As it turned out, the tension had started bubbling up after Kourtney’s therapist apparently informed her that she has an “issue with betrayal” because Kris cheated on her father, the late Robert Kardashian Sr., with soccer player Todd Waterman.

“Lately, in therapy, a lot of topics that have been coming up are about childhood issues and how that affects so many of my relationships today,” she said. “If I had a problem, I wouldn’t go to , ever. I would go to Dad. She was not my person that I found comforting.”

But Kris said Kourtney was “doted on” as a child.

“I think she’s going through a phase in life where she has some anger inside that I don’t quite understand,” she said. “I wish her dad was around to say, ‘You’ve had the best most magical childhood of any child, ever.’ That’s what we prided ourselves on.”

“She probably felt like she was always picking a side and it was always my dad’s,” remarked Khloé, 34. “In the divorce, she picked his. In the trial, she picked his. She wanted to live there over your house. She’s always picked his.”

Khloé said she wished her sister would communicate her feelings more openly with the family.

“I know Kourtney, for some reason, finds more comfort in talking to a stranger about family stuff, rather than talking to the source,” she said. “I would be fine with that if Kourtney took whatever her therapist talked about and then came to the source, but that’s the part we’re missing and that’s what’s frustrating to us all, because we never resolve something or work through something or just even fight about something if we don’t know what’s going on. It’s always us pulling teeth and guessing with her.”

Eventually, Kourtney decided she had to talk things through with Kris.

“If my going to therapy and figuring this all out is making me resentful towards my mom, which is not how I want to feel and it’s not how I want to treat her, then I feel like it is worth having a conversation with her, just to let her know that’s not my intention,” she said. “It’s really about me working on myself.”

“I’ve gone through a phase of being more sensitive to things,” she admitted. “It’s nothing bad, it’s just understanding and then understanding how that affects our current relationships. Like, if there’s certain behavior that Younes will do that’s similar to things that my mom would do, just subconsciously, it will just bring up similar issues. There is that uncomfortable place when you are growing, but I think it’s something that I have to just deal with myself.”

Sitting down with her mom, Kourtney did her best to explain where she was coming from.

“As you know, I’ve been gong to therapy lately and my therapist says your intimate relationships bring up childhood issues,” she said. “I just don’t think it’s fair if I’m not communicating it. I don’t want to go back in time … I feel like it has passed and I’m not feeling that way anymore, but I just wanted to explain that to you so you understand where it’s coming from.”

“What we usually do as a family is we criticize each other, we’re judgmental and we give each other an attitude and we’re bitchy,” she added. “So moving forward in life, I’ve made a point with my sisters already to not accept that anymore.”

Tearing up, Kris said all she wanted was “the best, most joyful, peaceful life” for her daughter.

“Whatever it takes for me to be part of that, that’s all I want,” she said. “That’s the joy of my life, is you guys. I have nothing else. I never want you to be disappointed in me, so if there’s something you want to say or something that you need to have me work on, I’m 100 percent ready to work on it because I love you so much. You’re my firstborn and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

The two of them hugged it out, and Kourtney agreed to work on things, too.

“Moving forward, I’m going to tell you if I don’t like something or if something is hurtful, instead of just being a bitch about it,” she promised.

“I think Kourtney and I have gotten through that rough patch and started a healing process,” said Kris. “That’s a really big step in the right direction, especially for her. She’s always going to hang onto the past a little bit, but what I am hopeful for is that we can look forward to an amazing future together because I love her more than anything.”

Here’s why Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank had to delay their engagement

Uh oh.

By Rebecca Fearn.

Every bride-to-be wants the spotlight to be on them during their engagement, but it seems Princess Eugenie had to wait her turn.

Reports have surfaced that Eugenie and Jack – who are due to marry on 12 October – had to postpone their engagement because of Prince Harry’s proposal to Meghan Markle.

Allegedly, the couple had decided they wanted to get married as early as last year, but due to the impending royal wedding of Harry and Meghan, they had to delay their official engagement and announcement.

A source revealed the details to Vanity Fair: “It’s my understanding that Eugenie and Jack decided some time ago that they wanted to get married, and there was some talk about a wedding in 2017, but they had to wait for Harry to go first.”

This postponement has left Eugenie’s nearest and dearest feeling that she deserves a big blow-out wedding now:

“The feeling among the Yorks is that she deserves her moment in the spotlight and a big royal wedding with all the frills,” the source added.

However, it sounds as though Eugenie was pretty chill about the whole thing: “There are no bad feelings at all. Eugenie is very close to Harry, and she knows how the system works.”

Roll on October 12 – we hope the Princess gets the big day she’s been waiting for!

Care Beyond Compare: Kaiser Permanente Top-Rated by NCQA

OAKLAND Calif. —“I have a great care team around me. Kaiser Permanente has always been there for me.”

Those are the words of Gregory Lee, a 45-year-old former Southern California television personality who nearly died after contracting West Nile virus in 2015. Those sentiments are also at the center of why Kaiser Permanente continues to be rated among the elite health organizations in the nation for treatment, disease prevention and consumer experience in the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2018-2019.

“They brought me back to life,” said Lee, who developed hydrocephalus (a deadly swelling of the brain), was paralyzed and spent nearly 100 days in intensive care.  His courageous attitude — coupled with the expert care he received from Kaiser Permanente infectious disease specialists, cardiologists, neurologists, physical therapy specialists and others — is why today, nearly three years later, he continues to improve and is looking forward to walking his bride-to-be down the aisle.

“Greg basically had to start from scratch and relearn how to eat, talk and walk,” said his fiancée Gina Villasenor.

“Our entire team came together to surround Greg with all the specialty knowledge that was needed to see him through,” said Timothy Jenkins, MD, medical director and chief of staff for the San Bernardino Service Area Medical Center. “All those specialists communicating with one another seamlessly depended on our integrated system of care.”

This level of expert specialty care, compassion and personalized service is what has made Kaiser Permanente a leader in health care. NCQA’s annual report, released today, rates more than 1,000 health plans, including Medicare, Medicaid and Private (commercial), on a 0-to-5 scale, with 5 being the best. Among their findings:

  • Only 14 health plans in the country (approximately 1 percent) received a 5.0 rating this year, and Kaiser Permanente has 9 of the 14.
  • Kaiser Permanente has the highest rated commercial and Medicare plan (or is tied for the highest) in every geographic region it serves. Kaiser Permanente serves more than 12.2 million members in eight states and the District of Columbia.
  • For the third year in a row, Kaiser Permanente is the only health care organization in the country to have a health plan rate 5.0 for both its Medicare and commercial populations.

High 5s for Mid-Atlantic States

Out of more than 1,000 plans rated in the NCQA Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2018-19, Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States is the only health care entity in the nation to receive a 5.0, the highest score possible, for both its Medicare and commercial (Private) populations.

Nationally, there are only 14 “5 out 5” ratings in NCQA’s annual report, and Kaiser Permanente has 9 of them. Kaiser Permanente’s other 5.0 plans include: Medicare plans in Colorado, Hawaii, Northern California, the Northwest, and Southern California; and Medicaid plans in Virginia and Maryland.

“While it is wonderful to be recognized as a leader in health care, the greatest measure of success is improving the lives of our more than 12 million members,” said Patrick Courneya, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals.

“I am proud of these results as they shine a light on the work being done by our compassionate and highly skilled physicians, nurses and care teams,” said Michael Kanter, MD, executive vice president and chief quality officer for The Permanente Federation, the national organization for the more than 21,000 physicians who provide care to Kaiser Permanente’s members.

The NCQA’s Health Insurance Plan Ratings are based on combined scores for health plans in the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set®, commonly called HEDIS; the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems®, or CAHPS; and NCQA Accreditation standards scores.

The ratings and methodology are posted on the NCQA’s website and will soon be posted on WebMD.com.
