Amy Schumer Will Refuse Super Bowl Ads in Support of Colin Kaepernick

Comedian Amy Schumer said Friday she would not do a Super Bowl commercial this year, in support of ex-quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Her message came the same day reports surfaced that singer Rihanna turned down being the next year’s Super Bowl half time performer, also in support of Kaepernick.

Schumer posted the message to her Instagram, saying she believes more white NFL players should kneel during the national anthem to show their support of their black teammates. Taking a knee has become the main form of protest in the NFL against police brutality and racial injustice in the U.S.

“I personally told my reps I wouldn’t do a Super Bowl commercial this year,” Schumer wrote. “I know it must sound like a privilege-ass sacrifice, but it’s all I got. Hitting the NFL with the advertisers is the only way to really hurt them.”

Schumer also said that Maroon 5, who is set to perform as next year’s halftime show, should also back out.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback sparked a wave of NFL national anthem protests against racial inequality, beginning in 2016. His actions have enraged many, including President Trump. This has led Kaepernick, who is currently an unsigned free agent, to claim he has been blacklisted by NFL leadership.

Schumer has taken more public political action recently, including getting arrested with Emily Ratajkowski earlier this month while protesting the nomination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

In her Instagram post, she did not specify whether she had been offered any Super Bowl advertising opportunities.

The horror thriller was a breakout success, leading to the spin-off feature Annabelle. That film was also quite popular, inspiring a prequel, Annabelle: Creation that explored the doll's origins, as well as a promised third installment in the…

Kate Middleton and Prince William threw a secret event in Kensington Palace

And everyone’s getting FOMO.

With soon-to-be parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their royal tour in Australia and Pippa Middleton welcoming a baby just this week, the attention has been off Kate Middleton and Prince William.

In fact, we’ve hardly seen the Duchess of Cambridge this year, with Kate taking a maternity leave after the birth of Prince Louis, returning to royal duties just this month.

But given the attention on other members of the royal family, Kate and William managed to throw a secret party in Kensington Palace this week, with the public and press only finding out after the occasion.

The event in question was work-related – a surprise reception for the finalists of this year’s BBC Radio One’s Teen Hero Awards at their Kensington Palace home.

The couple reportedly welcomed teenage finalists to the reception, talking to them about their work as Teen Heroes of 2018.

‘It was such an honour and privilege to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Kensington Palace,’ one of the winners, Siena Castellon, explained to HELLO!. ‘They were both genuinely interested in my website, www.QLMentoring.com, which I created to support and mentor autistic students and students with learning disabilities.’

She continued: ’The Duchess was especially interested in addressing autism stereotypes and was saddened to hear about the severity of the disability-related bullying I have experienced. She congratulated me for being a Diana Award holder and for currently serving on the National Youth Board, a role that has given me a national platform through which to share my disability-based bullying experience. They were both incredibly warm, supportive and encouraging. Meeting them was an awesome experience! They have inspired me continue to make a positive difference in my community.’

The BBC Radio One Teen Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, hosted by Greg James.

Hell Is Other People — Why Multiplayer Horror Games Are the New Hotness

One of the best horror games around is Dark Souls. It’s tense, frightful, laden with gothic imagery, and punishing in a way that is often mistaken for ‘difficulty.’ But at some point in every Dark Souls fan’s life, they’re just not scared any more.

If you’re running around naked with a giant hammer fighting bosses, there’s a decent chance you don’t find the game scary anymore. You’ve moved beyond timid caution into mastery — maybe even mockery. That’s not a fault of the game — actually, what makes Souls fans so rabid in their praise for the series is that FromSoftware accounts for and accommodates this.

Sadly, many other horror games don’t have the robust gameplay to accommodate this transition. That’s why you need to look at multiplayer horror games if you’re trying to find something you can return to over and over for your healthy dose of stress relief. Here are some of the best to take a look at.

People… What a Bunch of Pricks

DayZ is the grandaddy of Multiplayer Survival Horror. For years Survival Horror was used to describe any game where you were surviving and horror was involved. Where resources were scarce and scary things lurked around every corner. Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark — all of these were labelled ‘survival horror’.

At the time, we didn’t know the true meaning of either.

In those games, survival meant you’d be struggling to remain at 100% health. At best, you’d have to combine some herbs, or do some simplistic inventory management. Nowadays, survival means you wake up in the middle of nowhere and you need to decide whether you prioritise not starving to death or finding a weapon to protect yourself.

And horror involved meekly peeking around corners lest a dude in a Pyramid Head helmet catch you unawares. These days, it involves cowering in a dilapidated house, terrified of firing your weapon because you’ll attract zombies — and possibly worse.

While DayZ might have died off a bit since its heyday thanks to a lengthy development cycle, there are some fantastic alternatives out there. Rust is almost as old as DayZ, and while it strays closer to the survival than the horror, it’s grown into a very impressive game over the years.

A brand new one that is capturing the attention of lapsed DayZ fanatics is SCUM. This elaborate sweat simulator balances the survival and the horror nicely — adding in a crazy amount of data via biometrics to allow players to fully understand why they’re constantly dying of starvation, or a B12 deficiency or because you haven’t pooped recently.

Against that, the horror is ramped up thanks to the existence of menacing robot sentinels designed to guard the high loot areas of the map — these serve as scary obstacles for players trying to acquire the best gear. In PVP situations the robots focus in on the sound of gunfire, forcing you to make tough decisions about whether you’ll engage in combat or not. Add to that the reanimated corpses of former players, and SCUM can be extremely scary.

“Nobody Trusts Anybody Now.”

If Survival games aren’t your thing — and let’s face it, spending eight hours getting gear and food together only to die to a random zombie can burn anyone out — then Thing-a-likes might be more up your alley.

Playing on our inherent distrust of one another, Thing-based multiplayer horror games lean heavily on social interaction as a skill differentiator. A reference to the John Carpenter classic The Thing, these games are technically asymmetrical co-operative experiences. You and the other players work together to complete objectives around the playing area until you reach your end goal — be it extraction or escape.

The twist is that members of your party are working against you. They’re monsters, you see, and they don’t want you to escape — they want you to die!

The horror inherent is obvious — you can’t trust anybody, and as the game progresses tension mounts as the monster gradually becomes more powerful. Talking to your teammates is critical here, which might rule it out for some — but telling your crew who they can or can’t trust is usually the only way to survive.

The role of monster is generally randomly assigned, which means anyone could be a monster — including you. Even as a monster, the tension is still there — you’ll fail if you can’t kill your teammates in time, or if they find out your terrible secret, so there’s a delicate balancing act at hand as you play through the game.

One of the best in this genre is Deceit. A free-to-play game, Deceit is half-Saw, half-The Thing. You’re locked in a level, completing simplistic puzzles to escape the clutches of an unseen madman, unsure whether those locked within are monsters or humans.

Unfortunate Spacemen is a little more constructed in its gameplay — the objectives make more sense, and there’s a good sense of humour pushing it along — but it’s also more expensive, and currently only in Early Access. It’s worth keeping an eye on if you enjoy the Thing-a-like style of play, but Deceit should have you covered for now.

One, Two, Freddy’s Coming For You

The Slasher style of MP Horror lays the asymmetrical horror out for you from the get-go. In these games, you know there’s a killer, and you need to avoid them to escape. There’s no questioning whether a teammate messed up on purpose, or crazy accusatory shouting matches — there’s you, a handful of powerless teammates, a bunch of objectives and a terrifyingly powerful killer.

These are some of the best, purest horror experiences. Knowing the killer is nearby and desperately trying to stay hidden, balancing your own safety against the fact that you need to complete objectives to actually win, trying to keep your teammates alive, or to rescue them from doom — in Slasher style games, you get the opportunity to test whether you would make the same mistakes as the victims in films.

Dead by Daylight is the obvious stand-out in this category. It had a rough start, with inconsistent networking and some poor level design resulting in a number of unfair deaths at times. But the consistent support from the developer Behavior Digital has turned it into a brilliant test of nerves for players who queue as a survivor. And if you want, you can play as a killer as well. With killers inspired by some of the best slasher villains ever, Dead By Daylight is a fantastic horror game.

Friday the 13th: The Game is the other big name in this genre, and while it’s graphically more impressive than Dead by Daylight, and does some interesting things thanks to its connection to the film series, a significant increase in cost and ongoing legal issues mean it isn’t worth getting into.

Amy Schumer supports protesting NFL players by saying no to Super Bowl ads

The Super Bowl is the biggest night of the year for two things: Pro football and very expensive commercials. Amy Schumer has decided to use one to influence the other.

Her concern stems from ongoing protest actions in which certain players kneel, raises fists, or stand together united during pre-game National Anthem performances. They’re doing it to take a stand against police brutality and racial inequality in America — sticking to the message of exiled NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Schumer isn’t involved in football, but she does acknowledge that there’s one place she can push back: Super Bowl ads. She’s not doing them this year. She also urges Maroon 5 — the next Super Bowl’s halftime band — to drop out. Read more…

Is Queen Latifah’s Longtime Girlfriend Expecting A Baby?

Queen Latifah is reportedly expecting a child with her rumored girlfriend Eboni Nichols.

According to Radar Online, Eboni and Latifah are engaged, and the gossip site posted photos of Eboni flaunting her growing baby bump.

“Friends are saying Latifah and Eboni are finally engaged,” said an insider.

And a source added: “This will be the first child for Latifah.”

Latifah met Nichols, a choreographer and former Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader, on the set of “Dancing with the Stars” in 2009.

They broke up in 2015 (some reports say it was 2016) but rekindled the romance last year. The Queen has never publicly confirmed her sexual preference, but the duo was caught kissing in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, in 2013.

Meanwhile, RadarOnline also claims the 48-year-old hip-hop star has been secretly visiting a cancer treatment center in Beverly Hills for almost a year.

“It’s a serious concern,” said an insider. “She goes every couple of weeks and spends two or three hours inside the infusion unit. She’s been going for at least eight months.”

via RadarOnline:

The Chicago star usually pulls up to the building by herself in a white Range Rover…Occasionally, she’s chauffeured in a Rolls-Royce by an assistant.

After a recent appointment, Latifah was seen clutching a stack of documents in one hand and a revitalizing drink in the other.

On Oct. 2, she was spotted staggering out of the center, which is affiliated with the highly regarded Cedars-Sinai group.

Latifah’s has made no secret of her desire to start a family, telling the 2017 Television Critics Association audience that she “had to get a lot of partying out of my system early in life for about 40 years, you know what I’m saying. I’m good now. I think I’m ready,” she confessed.

Must-Reads Of The Week From Brianna Labuskes

We’re barreling toward November, folks. (How is it mid-October already?) As you might expect, election stories made up the bulk of the health care news this week. Other great gems and intriguing developments surfaced, though, so let’s get right to it.

Republicans on the campaign trail have been hammered by attack ads over their stance on the health law, with “preexisting conditions protections” — insurance safeguards for patients diagnosed with chronic illness — becoming a catch-all phrase for the most popular parts of the Affordable Care Act. Even the law’s most vocal opponents have been reading tea leaves and softening their stances. That’s why statements from GOP leadership this week that Congress could revisit their “repeal” fight post-midterms may have landed with a thunk.

The New York Times: Republican Candidates Soften Tone on Health Care As Their Leaders Dig In

The Washington Post: Trump Says ‘All Republicans’ Back Protections for Preexisting Conditions, Despite Repeated Attempts to Repeal Obamacare

Democrats are pulling out a tried-and-true talking point that seemed perfectly timed for them as news of the federal deficit reignited Republican talk about cutting entitlement programs. Dems (who have been playing defense over Medicare) seized the opportunity to accuse Republicans of putting the beloved program on the chopping block.

The Associated Press: Dems Shift Line of Attack, Warning of GOP Threat to Medicare

As the parties duke it out on the trail, voters seem to agree on one thing: Our health care system is broken and someone needs to fix it. “It’s crippling people. It’s crippling me,” one voter says in Politico’s deep read that takes us to a Pennsylvania county where the “margins of electoral victories traditionally are as slim as the spectrum of political opinion is vast.”

Politico Magazine: The Great American Health Care Panic

On the state level, a Missouri Democrat opposed to abortion struggles to find her place in the party. And Georgia becomes a preview of the growing political clout of home health aides.

The Trump administration this week proposed a requirement that pharma add drug prices to TV ads — triggering skepticism. One problem is that ad prices wouldn’t reflect what most people end up paying for a drug at the pharmacy counter.

Politico: Trump Set to Force Drugmakers to Post Prices in Ads

What I found surprising, considering how common those ads are, is that just a few dozen drugmakers run any at all — nearly half are put out by five companies. Those manufacturers would bear the brunt of the new rules.

Stat: Five Drug Makers Will Be Hit Hardest By Trump’s New Proposal on Drug Ads

Trying to think outside the box to rein in high drug prices, several states are considering treating pharma as they would a public utility — with rate-setting bodies to review, approve or adjust medication prices.

Stat: A Growing Number of States Consider Legislation to Treat Pharma As a Utility

And keep an eye on this battle: Minnesota became the first state to sue drugmakers over the price of insulin, but I don’t think it will be the last. The “life-or-death” drug has gotten a lot of attention recently, synthesizing the human toll of high costs into a digestible talking point.

Stat: Minnesota Becomes First State to Sue Major Insulin Makers Over Price-Gouging

Another 4,100 Arkansas beneficiaries were dropped from the state’s Medicaid rolls, and 4,800 more are at risk next month (on top of the original 4,353 people dropped last month) — all because of the state’s new work requirements. For critics of the restrictions, their worst fears are realized, while state and national officials focus on what they call positive outcomes. Sotheby’s Paris Preps Fourth Auction of Books From Pierre Bergé’s Personal Library

BERGE’S BOOKENDS: If reading is the key to enlightenment, Pierre Bergé sure had a lot of books to spark his intelligence.
Sotheby’s Paris will hold the fourth auction for a selection of books from Bergé’s personal collection on Dec. 14. Several choice lots are on view at Sotheby’s New York office through Saturday, and they illustrated the myriad interests of the late French business titan: botany, gardens, philosophy, activism and more. The upcoming auction is expected to drum up between 5 million euros and 6 million euros, according to a Sotheby’s spokeswoman.
Literature, the 19th century and music were among the areas of interest covered in prior sales, with the first auction having been held nearly three years ago.
The December sale includes such highlights as Bartholomeus Anglicus’ “Le Propriétaire des choses,” circa 1486. This complete copy of a major medieval encyclopedia is illustrated with 19 large woodcuts, all hand-colored at that time. Bidders will also find Gustave Flaubert’s “Salammbô” from 1863, a first edition that was inscribed by Flaubert to the composer Hector Berlioz.
Another reading relic is Leonhart Fuchs’ “De historia stirpium commentarii insignes” from 1542 that is considered to be the founding treatise of modern botany. The auction house will also

Alleged Emo ‘Sex Cult’ Leader William Control’s Comeback Attempt Shocks Victims

Facebook

In June, The Daily Beast published allegations from multiple women about former Aiden singer William Francis. The women claimed that Francis, who performs under the moniker William Control, “physically and emotionally abused women, ordered many of them to get matching tattoos of his initials, and even demanded contracts from his sexual partners or ‘slaves,’ signed in their own blood.” As one survivor, Stormie Somers, told The Daily Beast at the time, “What [Francis] considers BDSM—basically he just beats the shit out of you and brainwashes you to believe your sole purpose is to serve him and to worship him and that’s your job.”

“It went from crossing lines of consent to totally physical annihilation.”

Francis denied the accusations, writing in a June 7 statement, “I have, in the past, engaged in heavy role play and bondage relationships WITH consent. However, I do not engage in that sort of play anymore. And for anyone who feels as though I have hurt them or violated their consent, I am sorry. It won’t ever happen again. There are lots of things that have been said that are outright lies. I have never been with underage girls. I have never been involved in a ‘sex cult.’”

Michael Myers on Michael Myers: A ‘Halloween’ Legend on Handing Off the Butcher Knife

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

You know his name: Michael Myers, the unstoppable suburban menace of John Carpenter’s iconic proto-slasher Halloween. Among the horror franchise’s 40-year lineage of actors who’ve squeezed under the rubber mask, only one’s name is still inextricable from Myers: Nick Castle, the original Shape.

Castle’s looming presence on his old USC film school buddy Carpenter’s set gave physical form to a cinematic definition of evil: slow, strangely graceful, unknowable in its single-minded bloodlust. James Jude Courtney, the actor under the mask in David Gordon Green’s new Halloween sequel, is the first Michael Myers to share screen time with Castle, who turned to directing (The Last Starfighter, The Boy Who Could Fly) after his debut in the blue jumpsuit. It’s an appropriate handing of the torch for a new Halloween canon: Green’s film, co-written with Danny McBride and starring the OG scream queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis as a hardened, ever-vigilant Laurie Strode, supplants every Halloween sequel to date, providing a fresh start in a spirit faithful to the original.

For his part, Castle is endeared, if slightly flummoxed by the deeply-felt significance Halloween-heads still project onto Myers. “I can’t even say mine was a performance,” he chuckles. “It was as simple as putting on a rubber mask and John telling me which way to turn.”

For stars, Super Bowl performances might not be worth the headaches

The Super Bowl halftime show was originally seen as a clever way to capitalize upon the world’s biggest TV stage. For the NFL, it offered the chance to retain more of the game’s audience during the extended break, and maybe increase tune-in among younger viewers. For artists, it was a massive promotional opportunity. Win-win.

SPECIAL DEALS UPDATE:

Is Kanye West A Bot Desperate For Validation?

Recent events regarding Kanye West’s erratic behavior have led me to believe that the man we see in public isn’t the real Kanye but a first generation android. These “first-gen” androids created to replace black celebrities desperate for a seat at the table of whiteness effectively regurgitate inane and rudimentary Fox News rhetoric but are still working out early model kinks. There are ways to tell but two examples of proof with Kanye is the blank, lost look in the eyes—possibly a malfunction or breakdown in programming—and the intense staunch doubling down on flawed and debunked political views he repeats after reading Donald Trump’s occasionally entertaining, but always eye-roll-inducing Twitter feed. The flesh-and-blood Kanye—if he is still with us—is locked away in a dank, cool basement overrun with water bugs the size of fat pecans watching this boring, uninspired version of himself make a mockery of his musical legacy and dismantle his worthy contributions to music and pop culture.

Is Kanye In The Sunken Place?

If Kanye isn’t an android, then it’s safe to say that he has been a victim of a nefarious suburban racial scheme akin to Jordan Peele’s 2017 global hit and Oscar-winning film Get Out. By now we’ve all seen Get Out and if you haven’t then it’s worth a watch. But for those who aren’t in the know, a young black man goes to visit his white girlfriend’s family in an upstate New York town only to stumble upon a diabolical scheme that involved white people literally stealing, wearing, sexualizing, and profiting off of the bodies of black men and women. Are the Kardashian women the Armitages? Is Kim K. the Rose in this story who blithely lures a black man to a room of horrors where he is stripped of his essence and his mind is replaced by a bland white man in 45’s administration? As some of the memes last year implied, is Kanye in the sunken place of his mind?

Kanye West

Kanye West “Get Out” Meme

The Miseducation of Kanye West

Science fiction conspiracy theories aside, Kanye is responsible for his own downfall and enjoys the attention, even if it’s negative. Gone is the Kanye West of 2005, who brazenly interrupted Mike Myers, much to Myers’ chagrin, and shouted without missing a beat: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” At the time, it was an apt response to Bush’s sluggish reaction to saving the mostly black and poor white folks of New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina. Reactions were polarizing but the overall sentiment was that Kanye told no lies, or at least, said what many were thinking. The artist whose first three albums were multiplatinum successes selling nearly 10 million copies between the three of them combined, according to RIAA; who won multiple Grammys for his contributions to the culture; and who famously interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for the 2009 VMAs because he was so butthurt over her “You Belong With Me” video winning over Beyoncé’s now classic video “Single Ladies.” The interruption has gone on to become sort of a pop culture mainstay with “I’ma let you finish but…” becoming a regularly used intro by people all over when they are about to share their thoughts of a better product that was passed up for a perceived inferior one.

Kanye West

Kanye West taking the microphone from Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (Wikimedia Commons)

The man who, whether you loved him, hated him, or were indifferent to him, was pumping out hit after hit of admittedly well-crafted tunes, piecing together obscure soul samples and creating whole new songs out of them has been replaced by this dead-eyed, lifeless husk of a being who is a rampant Trump supporter, and unable to have a cohesive conversation and back up his assertions with actual facts.

Kanye, The Obstacle

We live in a world where Taylor Swift, who was notoriously silent on political views, is a neo-liberal advocating for young people to vote (resulting in an immense spike in voter registration) while Kanye West is sitting dead-eyed in the Oval Office rambling like a man with no soul, perfectly on par with the malignant narcissist that is our Commander in Chief. Swift, who seems to be inexplicably linked to Kanye in a number of ways, is making more sense in her ivory tower of success and ubiquity than a man who prematurely called himself the voice of a generation in one of his many rants. Those were the days when he was relatively sane, his ego and need to be a part of the elite being the only negative qualities that hampered true greatness. But those qualities were mostly tolerable then or, at the very least, you could ignore his posturing and throw on some Rufus and Chaka and go on about your day. But when a successful artist is on TMZ making uneducated claims about slavery and is in the Oval Office in the presence of a person who truly doesn’t like black people and whose megalomania dwarf’s Kanye’s, then we have truly reached an era in “what the f–k.?”

My creative, nerdy, Octavia Butler-loving side tells myself that Kanye is an android who is acting on gleaned information from interviews or perhaps information shared by the Kardashians. Or, I get a little darker and see Kanye as the victim of melanin envy and swiftly and covertly done away with and replaced by the blandest white males in Trump’s administration. Then reality sets in and I’m no longer able to feed my creative self those stories.

To blame anyone else for Kanye’s downfall is simply lazy and another way in which black male celebrities aren’t being held accountable and I won’t do that. Kanye is the reason Kanye is failing in his career and is destroying his legacy in the process. Despite the fact that he visited Uganda and gifted the children with pairs of his Yeezy sneakers (altruism, I suppose) if the brotha doesn’t get real help, the worst will happen and his accomplishments will be eclipsed by nonsensical behavior.

Kaiser Permanente Medicare Plan Earns Highest Rating in the State

HONOLULU — The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a federal agency, has rated Kaiser Permanente Hawaii’s 2019 Medicare plan the highest rating of 5 out of 5 stars in its annual Star Ratings program. Kaiser Permanente is the only Medicare plan in Hawaii and one of just 14 in the nation to receive 5 stars this year.

The Medicare star quality rating for 2019 is based on plans’ performance in up to 45 care and service quality measures across 9 categories. CMS assigns a rating to individual Medicare health plans ranging from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) stars based on measures related to staying healthy, managing chronic conditions, member experience, customer service and pharmacy services. Five-star plans can participate in a Special Enrollment Period and continue to enroll individual (direct pay) Medicare members from January 1 to September 31, in addition to the regular annual enrollment period of October 15 to December 7.

“From the doctor’s office to the pharmacy to member services, our entire staff is dedicated to providing high-quality, integrated care and coverage to help our kupuna members stay healthy as they age,” said Linda Puu, vice president of Quality, Safety and Care Experience. “We’re proud to be recognized as the leading Medicare plan in Hawaii by CMS, which oversees Medicare administration and has the highest standards for measuring quality of care and health plan performance.”

The CMS rating follows a recent accolade given by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a leading health care quality assurance organization. Earlier this year, the NCQA Medicare Health Insurance Plan Ratings awarded Kaiser Permanente Hawaii’s Medicare plan with a 5 out of 5 score, making it the only 2019 plan in Hawaii and one of just eight plans nationwide to receive the highest rating.

Data for the Medicare star quality rating is drawn from the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set, the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, Health Outcomes Survey and CMS administrative data from audits, complaints and “secret shopping.” For more information about the CMS star ratings, visit medicare.gov. To learn more about the star ratings and see Kaiser Permanente’s ratings by region, visit kp.org/medicarestars.

She Spent $16m In Harrods. Now She Must Explain Where The Money Came From

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Harrods, the iconic London department store, burnished its questionable credentials as the go-to destination of the global kleptocracy this week after it emerged that the wife of a wealthy, jailed Azerbaijani criminal spent more than £16m ($ 22m) in the London store over a 10-year period.

Zamira Hajiyeva, 55, the wife of a former state banker in Azerbaijan, is the target of the UK’s first Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO), a new piece of anti-money-laundering legislation that compels its subjects to provide a “clear account” of how they purchased British assets.

Hajiyeva is the wife of Jahangir Hajiyev, 57, the former chairman of the state-owned International Bank of Azerbaijan. In 2016 he was sentenced to 15 years in jail for defrauding the bank out of up to 5bn manat ($ 2.9bn).

Michael B. Jordan Invites U.S. Open Winner Naomi Osaka To ‘Creed 2’ Premiere With Shirtless Photo

Naomi Osaka won the U.S. Open against Serena Williams recently and appeared on several talk shows after to discuss the big win. When she went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Osaka was asked about her celebrity crush. She admitted that she liked Michael B Jordan and right there Ellen texted him to possibly hook them up.

Osaka sat there blushing and couldn’t believe what was happening. The Jasmine Brand reports that Ellen decided to take things to another level when she wished Osaka a happy birthday this week. Attached to the birthday tweet was a photo of Jordan without his shirt on. Osaka tweeted back that she wanted Ellen to block her, but then Jordan tweeted something very special to Osaka.

He sent a newer photo with no shirt on and said, “This one is better and more recent. LOL Happy Belated Bday Naomi. But seriously I want to invite you to the Creed 2 premiere as a bday present.” We haven’t heard if Osaka is going or not, but if she doesn’t want to accept the invitation we know plenty of people that will take her place.

The True Story Behind the Movie Can You Ever Forgive Me?

For a collector, the price of a celebrity letter is as much determined by its content as the name signed on the end. The juiciest letters, the ones that offer some hint of Ernest Hemingway or Dorothy Parker’s inner lives, fetch the highest prices. For Lee Israel, a celebrity biographer by trade and the subject of Melissa McCarthy’s new movie Can You Ever Forgive Me?, the best way to acquire such letters was to buy an old typewriter, do a bit of research and bang one out herself.

Israel had been a moderately successful celebrity biographer through the 70s and 80s, writing books about actor Tallulah Bankhead and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. But in the late 80s, Israel’s career went into decline and she began selling forged letters of dead writers and actors in order to get by. She was eventually brought to trial by the FBI and sentenced to six months under house arrest and five years probation, but not before she had forged more than 400 letters, some of which remain in circulation to this day.

Can You Ever Forgive Me?, which comes out Oct. 19, is based on Israel’s memoir of the same name. Directed by Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) and starring McCarthy as Israel, the film tells the story of her transformation from writer to forger after her career as a biographer goes into a tailspin.

Here’s what the movie gets right and what it doesn’t.

Fact: Israel had a former girlfriend named Elaine

Israel, portrayed in the movie as a depressed misanthrope with a drinking problem, refers again and again to what seems to be her one real human connection in the past — her relationship with her (ex) girlfriend Elaine (played by Anna Deavere Smith). Near the end of the movie, Israel and Elaine meet again, and it becomes apparent that Elaine has moved on even if Israel, who had pushed her away in the first place, has not. Like many of the movie’s characters, Elaine is a real person. In her memoir, Israel describes falling in love with “a brilliant, beautiful bartender named Elaine, a lapsed Catholic who now observed only Bloomsday and St Patrick’s — the first with solemnity, the latter with wretched excess.”

Fact: Israel had published a poorly received biography of Estée Lauder

Israel’s published Estée Lauder: Beyond the Magic in 1985. The book ended up contributing to the collapse of Israel’s career as a biographer. Lauder herself had offered to pay Israel not to write the biography, and when the author refused, Lauder published her own memoir, which undercut the sales of Israel’s book. Rushed out to beat Lauder’s book to market, Israel’s biography was poorly reviewed — in the The New York Times Book Review, Marylin Bender wrote that Beyond the Magic “comes off as a cut rate job.”

Fact: Israel began selling letters in order to pay for treatment for her sick cat

In the film, Israel takes her cat to the vet, but is short on cash to pay the bill. In her memoir, Israel also claims that she was unable to pay the vet bills for her cat Doris. While researching an article at the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, Israel says she stole three letters by Fanny Brice and sold them for $ 40 each. She claimed she felt no guilt for the theft; the letters “were from the realm of the dead. Doris and I were alive.”

Fact: Dealers began to get suspicious of Israel’s letters because they dealt too explicitly with Noël Coward’s homosexuality

In the film, the net begins to close on Israel when a dealer grows suspicious of her Noël Coward letters. In real life, one of Coward’s friends who was also a collector noticed that some of the playwright’s letters that Israel had sold referenced his sexual orientation. While alive, Coward had been extremely discreet about his private life. Many dealers began refusing to buy Israel’s letters after the fakes were exposed.

Fact: After dealers began to catch on to Israel’s embellishments and forgeries, she began stealing real letters

In both the film and the memoir, Israel decides to go into outright theft after her fakes are exposed. “I was going to take a crook’s tour of major university libraries,” she wrote, “replicate some valuable letters in their various collections, and then replace the McCoy with forged copies.”

Fact: A dealer demanded Israel give him money in order for him to not testify against her

In the film, a slimy rare books dealer tells Israel that he was approached by the FBI and demands $ 5,000 to buy his silence. In her memoir, Israel writes that dealer Alan Weiner really did ask for the money. Promising to pay him, she later sold him stolen letters, effectively making him buy his own silence.

Fiction: Israel destroyed the evidence of her crimes after being served with a subpoena that forbid her from doing so

In the film, Israel is served with a subpoena that explicitly forbids her from destroying evidence related to the forgery case. She immediately goes home and destroys all the evidence she can find. According to her account, Israel was only confronted on the street by a pair of FBI agents, which prompted her to go home and dispose of her research materials and typewriters. Of course, it might be fair to take this particular detail of Israel’s recollection with a grain of salt.

Fiction: Israel befriends Jack Hock at a bar after first meeting him at a book party several years earlier

The film fictionalizes much of Israel’s friendship with Jack Hock, a likable grifter played by Richard E. Grant. She befriends Hock at a bar shortly before beginning her forging escapades. In real life, the two had been longtime friends until Israel found out that Hock, who had been shopping one of her books in order to make a movie adaptation, had forged her name on an option extension.

Fiction: Jack Hock was homeless

The film strongly implies that Hock is homeless, or something close to it. But in her memoir, Israel describes staying at Hock’s “well-appointed Mitchell-Lama apartment.” After they begin stealing and selling letters together, Hock moved into an apartment on West 72nd Street.

Fact: Israel caught Hock trying to steal from her

In the film, Hock tries to swindle Israel out of her share of their ill-got earnings. This episode played out in real life remarkably similarly to the way it does in the film. Hock, claiming to have sold a collection of stolen letters for $ 1500, gave Israel $ 750. When she asked to see the rest of the money, it was revealed that he had actually been paid $ 2,000 for the letters. After the incident, Israel began accompanying Hock to their sales and waiting to meet him nearby when the deal was completed.

New $2.6 Million Campaign Encourages Black Voter Turnout in Midterm Elections

A newly-launched political group that includes several top black business leaders and entrepreneurs is doing its part to help ensure black voter turnout during the midterm elections on November 6.

The Black Economic Alliance PAC and Black Economic Alliance Fund just announced a $ 2.6 million campaign to mobilize black voters in 15 key races ahead of next month’s midterm elections.

The movement is geared to escalate black voter turnout in support of candidates advocating for sustainable policies that will improve and enhance economic outcomes for the nation’s black community.

Further, the investments will help engage and mobilize black voters by utilizing various tactics, including polling, radio, and digital advertising, door-to-door canvassing, SMS texting, and direct mail.

“For far too long, many of our nation’s elected officials have been crafting policies that contribute to the economic disenfranchisement of millions of black people across the country,” Gerald Adolph, board member of the Black Economic Alliance PAC, stated in a press release.

“By investing nearly $ 3 million in targeted gubernatorial, congressional and Senate races, we can help ensure that candidates rallying for policies that lead to better employment opportunities and wages for black Americans are victorious in November.”

Adolph added, “This midterm election is crucial for the economic well-being of many black people and their families. That’s why we’ve extensively surveyed the national landscape to identify candidates who can help improve economic opportunities for the black community. As the election draws closer and fields shift, we will continue to invest in candidates and races that can make the ultimate difference in the lives of black people.”

More details about the campaign and candidates the Black Economic Alliance PAC and Black Economic Alliance Fund will back in upcoming races can be found here.

The Oscar-winner recently shared on a video showing off her super-snatched waist..and it was everything.

She let her fans get a little peek of her at a recent photo shoot rocking a pair of curve-hugging jeans and a cinched waist poppin’ to Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow. ” The 50-year-old also showed some love to her fitness trainer Dwight Holt, Jr., for helping her dance off the pounds.

Earlier this year, Mo celebrated weighing under 200 pounds for the first time since high school.

“I said that I would share this new journey with y’all on the weight loss and getting healthy,” the comedian said in a video she posted on Instagram.

“Today was the first time in my adult life that I’ve been under 200 pounds, so I wanted to let you all know it’s possible and you can do it and we can get there.”

She added that she achieved this weight loss without having to go under the knife or falling for any diet fads.

Amazon, the headlining sponsor of Tokyo Fashion Week, made the event happen through its At Tokyo program, and also hosted the show in its fashion-imaging studio, the largest in the world.
Morinaga began by showing looks from his latest offering, which he unveiled in Paris last month, as well as some greatest hits from past seasons. He had his models pause from time to time on the runways and used changes in lighting to demonstrate the various hidden effects of the garments. Models held their hands in front of their seemingly all-white dresses, while standing before hot lights. When they moved their hands, prints were left behind. In another trick of light, all-black looks were revealed to contain colorful patchworklike elements when viewed in the dark with a special spotlight. Family dysfunction like you’ve never seen. NETFLIX’s “The Haunting Of Hill House” is a slow-burn take on Shirley Jackson’s classic gothic novel which stretches over the course of 10 episodes. We Heart: The Website That Keeps Your Voter Registration Straight

Voter suppression laws across the U.S. make it harder to vote—and often leave people of color, people with disabilities, students and senior citizens bearing the brunt of new burdens at the ballot box. And while there isn’t an app that can change the hours your polling place is open or remind you of the intricacies of a complicated voter ID law, a new website can help you make sure that your voter registration is safe.

Voters unfairly purged from the rolls are losing their chance to be heard. A new website helps them safeguard against just that. (ClatieK / Creative Commons)

States often permit officials to purge names from the voter rolls after years of inactivity, or in case of death or relocation, but many voters in recent years have found that they were unfairly purged—and when they turned up to the polls, they were swiftly turned away.

With voting rights more under attack than ever, it’s important that everyone stay vigilant to ensure that their registrations remain active. That’s where Don’t Get Purged comes in—a new website that checks the voter rolls in your state so that you can be sure you’re all set for election day.

The way it works is simple: Users go to dontgetpurged.org and enter their name, address, date of birth and email. The system then searches through the voting rolls to find that user’s registration file. If a user finds out that they are no longer registered, the site can help them re-registered before election day; if it turns out a user’s registration checks out, they can breathe a sigh of relief and figure out which shirt looks best with their “I Voted” sticker.

The upcoming elections are the most important in our lifetime. Play it safe: go to dontgetpurged.org today to make sure your registration is active. Potential voters are encouraged to check back more than once to make sure they are still eligible to vote, too—so make sure to register, resist and repeat.

How to Iron Your Clothes Less

How to Iron Your Clothes Less - Tips to Avoid Ironing Your WorkwearEven if your least favorite chore is washing dishes or cleaning the house, it’s a good bet that you’d also love to iron your clothes less. (Or maybe ironing is your least favorite chore!) It’s been years since we’ve talked about this — although we’ve more recently discussed how to keep white blouses white, how to wash “dry clean only” clothes, and how to care for your bras — so today we’re sharing reader advice on how to iron your clothes less. Buying shirts marketed as “no-iron” is always an option, of course, but we’ll go beyond that today (and with their safety issues in mind, those shirts probably warrant their own post — what do you think?). What are your favorite ways to avoid ironing? Do you buy non-iron blouses for work? (And as winter clothes finally start to come out of storage, do you think there are bigger gaffes for workwear than wrinkled clothes, such as creases from folds in sweaters, or a cedar scent?)

Here’s advice from readers on how to iron your clothes less (mostly from our last discussion on how to avoid ironing, many moons ago):

  1. Hang up your clothes immediately after taking them out of the dryer. Another reader pointed out that after you wash clothes made from fabrics you can’t tumble dry, you should flap them around a bit before putting them on a drying rack. Related: Do you strictly follow label directions that advise “lay flat to dry” vs. “hang dry,” or just put everything on drying racks?
  2. Get a clothes steamer. One reader who bought a steamer on Amazon says it allows her to avoid ironing knits and other workwear items, although she doesn’t advise using it on tailored button-front shirts. (This $ 26 steamer looks great!) Another said that she uses one on her suits (and notes that she always hangs up her suits after wearing). Wirecutter recently shared their picks for the best steamers, and two recommendations from readers are the Esteam Personal Hand Held Steamer ($ 75) and Steamfast SF-407 ($ 50) [affiliate links].
  3. Try throwing wrinkled clothes in the dryer for a few minutes. One reader says that a 10-minute spin in the dryer works well for smoothing out t-shirts, sweaters, dress pants, and non-iron shirts. She adds a wet towel as needed, while a reader who replied said that she uses a handful of water. (Another said this trick removes pet hair, too.) My dryer even has a “Freshen Up” setting that I assume is designed for this, although I haven’t tried it.
  4. Use Downy Wrinkle Releaser (or a similar product). Amazon sells a 2-pack of 33.8-oz. sprayer bottles (almost 1,000 reviews) for $ 13.24 and also has a pack of 3 travel-size bottles for $ 7.97 [affiliate links]. One reader recommended a cheaper and more natural option: Put the item of clothing on a hanger and use a spray bottle filled with water.
  5. Make sure to use fabric softener when you wash clothes. But according to Good Housekeeping, don’t use it on microfiber, sportswear, towels, water-repellent clothing, or flame-resistant clothing. (Fortunately, your workwear wardrobe probably doesn’t include those things — and if it does, you must have a really interesting job.)
  6. Hang your suit, dress, etc., in the bathroom while you shower. Now if you brush your teeth in the shower too, you’ll really be multitasking! (No, don’t do that. Who wants to rinse their mouth out with warm water?)
  7. Be a clothes-folding minimalist. One reader said that she reduces the creases in her shirts by only folding them once — in half vertically, down the middle of the shirt.

What are your tips on how to iron your clothes less? Do you use a clothing steamer, and if so, would you recommend the one you have? How much do you base your clothes-buying decisions on whether something is likely to wrinkle easily (linen, 100% cotton, and so on) or whether it requires dry cleaning?

12 Movie Moments That Messed Up Kids of the ’80s

The 1980s were filled with terrifying horror films, the likes of Freddy, Jason and Michael traumatising kids who caught their celluloid kills. But there was also a vicious streak running through the family films of the era. Which as maybe preparing the youth of the period for adulthood. But equally messed most of us up. The following 12 of the most disturbing movie moments from the decade.

Test of Manhood — Flash Gordon (1980)

Flash Gordon is a mad movie for many, many reasons. Most notably the sadomasochistic streak that runs throughout what’s ostensibly a movie aimed at children. But the ‘Test of Manhood’ on Arbia is also pretty messed up. The initiation involves a young man thrusting his arm through a hole in a tree, then endeavouring to avoid the sting of the pulsating creature that waits within. “Choose your passage, into this world, or the next,” the young Treeman is told. But he selects the wrong hole. And you should never select the wrong hole. The chap duly gets stung, and bright green puss oozes from his wrist. “Send me on my way,” he begs soon-to-be James Bond, Timothy Dalton. “Spare me the madness.” Which pre-007 does, killing him in cold, green blood. A moment that was made all the more disturbing for British youngsters when the actor playing ‘Young Treeman’ — Peter Duncan — started presenting educational children’s show Blue Peter that same year.

Medusa — Clash of the Titans (1981)

Medusa’s head in Clash of the Titans.

The 1980s were all about sword, sandals and sorcery epics. The violent Conan movies were aimed at teens and adults, while 1981’s Clash of the Titans — featuring adorable golden owl Bubo — was more family-friendly. Aside from the scene in which Perseus does battle with Medusa; a monstrous Gorgon, whose hair is made of snakes, and who turns men to stone with just a look. Which resulted in six-year-old me closing my eyes whenever she was onscreen. The character was brought to life via terrifying stop-motion, with Medusa so very messed up that even her blood transformed into deadly scorpions.

Earworm — Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

The Ceti Eel.

The Ricardo Montalban iteration of Khan is the greatest villain in Star Trek history. And this scene features his most dastardly act. Having captured Chekov and Terrell, Khan educates them about Ceti Alpha V’s only remaining indigenous life-form. While poking it with tongs, Khan claims that the Ceti Eel killed 20 of his best people, including his wife. He explains that their young enter humans via the ear, and wrap themselves around the cerebral cortex, rendering the victim susceptible to suggestion, and precipitating madness followed by death. Khan then grabs a couple of the slugs and sticks them in helmets which are popped on our heroes’ heads. What follows is body horror worthy of David Cronenberg, the eels crawling ear-wards as Chekov and Tyrell emit terrified screams. Similar to audiences who had signed up for a sci-fi romp, and were now watching hardcore horror.

Robopocalypse — Superman III (1983)

I remember seeing Superman III with my family at the cinema, catching a glimpse at an image from this sequence on a lobby card, and being so scared that I asked to go home. My mum made me stay and told me it would be fine. It wasn’t. The sequence in question sees a super-computer turn the villainous Vera Webster into a cyborg, with metal soldered onto her skin as she makes an ungodly noise. Vera awakens more machine than woman, twisted and evil; firing lasers from her fingers and eyes. Pretty sure I started crying at that moment, and the sequence has haunted my dreams ever since.

Artax Dies — The NeverEnding Story (1984)

Think I’ve got something in my eye.

The concept of ‘The Nothing’ consuming vast chunks of Fantasia is enough to give any kid an existential crisis. Combined with the death of Artax in the Swamp of Sadness, it’s a wonder we weren’t all dribbling wrecks come the end of The NeverEnding Story. “Everyone knew that whoever lets the sadness overtake him would sink into the swamp,” we’re told via voiceover. And that’s exactly what happens to Atreyu’s trusty steed, with Artax looking genuinely heartbroken as he slowly descends. “Fight against the sadness,” pleads Atreyu. “You have to try. You have to care. For me. You’re my friend. I love you.” But it’s too late. Artax is gone.

“There is no Santa!” — Gremlins (1984)

In spite of its horror elements, Gremlins was also marketed squarely at kids. Indeed I remember requesting a Mogwai for Christmas, and being disappointed when I received a toy version and not the real thing. So families got a shock when they watched the actual film. The scene when a kindly teacher offers a Gremlin chocolate, and promptly gets his hand bitten off, is the one that upset me. But for the majority, it seems to be a monologue that’s funny if you’re an adult. But deeply disturbing if you are a kid. Explaining her hatred of Christmas, Kate (Phoebe Cates) reveals that her father once went missing on December 24th. Days later, she lit the fire in her living room, “And that’s when I noticed the smell.” Turns out Dad had slipped while climbing down the chimney — presents in hand — and broke his neck. “That’s how I discovered there was no Santa Claus,” says Kate, the adults in the audience laughing at the macabre story; their kids gently sobbing.

Heart Attack — Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

Heart-stopping stuff.

Raiders of the Lost Ark had already messed us up with that climactic face-melt. Which has since been commemorated in a novelty candle. But Temple of Doom took Indiana Jones movies to the next level, via a scene in which a man watches as his beating heart is ripped from his chest. Then gets lowered into a river of molten lava. And it could have been worse. As according to Nizwar Karanj — the actor who played the unfortunate victim — there was more horror planned. “They made a life-like face of mine for the film, including my eyes,” he told Yahoo. “That was because, once the cage was lowered into this pit of molten lava, my body wou
