‘Seinfeld,’ ‘Curb’ and ‘Borat’ All Led to ‘Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy’
HOLLYWOOD, California—Larry Charles calls his new Netflix show the “culmination” of his life’s work.
The four-episode documentary series, titled Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy, finds the 62-year-old writer and director on a global mission to figure out what makes people laugh in war-torn countries like Iraq and Somalia.
“Most of my projects are very hard to get off the ground because they’re very radical,” Charles tells me as we wait for our to-go cups of coffee on a cold but sunny February afternoon in Los Angeles. “But I’m also a very tenacious person and I don’t like to compromise. And I’ve had enough success that I can rope people in.”

Nordstrom Winter Sale 2019 Picks for Men
Nordstrom Winter Sale 2/15 – 2/24
Is Nordstrom slowly starting to increase the number of sale events that they run? They don’t run many. The big Anniversary Sale pre-fall, a couple of half-yearly sales, and that used to be it. But this “winter sale” has seen the sale section swell from under 2000 items to almost 4000. So, that’s something. Especially when everything ships for free. Sure, it’s not as amazing as the aforementioned Anniversary or Half-yearly events, but it’s still worth a look. We scrolled through all those pages so you don’t have to.
Jack Erwin ” Joe” Cap Toe Oxford – $ 130.65 ($ 195)
Looks like a few Jack Erwin models are included in this sale. These are their basic, made in Spain, blake stitch, cap toe oxfords. A fair price at $ 195, and a nifty deal at $ 131. Full review here.
Norstrom Long Sleeve Polo – $ 35.70 ($ 59.50)
Basic, but Nordstrom’s house brand stuff usually punches above it’s weight. All cotton. Would look great under a knit sportcoat.
L.B.M 1911 Classic Fit Stretch Cotton Sport Coat – $ 416.98 ($ 695)
Meanwhile, on the other end of the price spectrum compared to those long sleeve polos… that’s a LOT of cash for a cotton sportcoat. But some guys swear by LBM 1911 and their offerings. I’m not one of them, personally, but I’m just some dope on the internet. 98% cotton and 2% stretch. Made in Italy.
1901 Made in Italy Wool or Wool/Cashmere Sportcoat – $ 209.40 ($ 349)
That’s more like it. Unconstructed, also made in Italy, and a HELL of a lot less expensive when compared to those LBM jackets. Oh, and these 1901 options are wool or wool/cashmere to boot. You can keep the cotton.
Robert Talbott Goodyear Welted Double Monks – $ 197.65 ($ 295)
I don’t know where they’re made (all it says is “imported”) but Goodyear welted double monks in a do-anything shade of timeless brown? With a medallion at the toe too? Not bad. Especially since you can get them in your hands, and on your feet, and return them in case they don’t work out (just try them out on carpet to keep the soles pristine and returnable).
Barbour Flyweight Chelsea Quilted Jacket – $ 137.40 ($ 229)
Not a bad price for a piece of heritage British designed outerwear. Just seeing the gray color for now?
Made in Italy GREATS Royale Sneaker – $ 119.93 ($ 179)
White leather, gum sole. Not bad for made in Italy too. Extremely well reviewed. Word is they run large so order the next size down?
Red Wing Unlined Leather Gloves – $ 55.24–$ 64.24 ($ 84.99)
Deerskin, made in the USA, and two colors to pick from. Lots to like for a casual glove.
Barbour Lutz Quilted Jacket – $ 161.40 ($ 269)
Gets a lot of things right. Diamond quilting. Belted collar. Couple of colors to pick from.
Jack Erwin Adam Wingtip – $ 130.65 ($ 195)
More Spanish made, sleek, Blake stitch goodness. A little more modern looking than most other wingtips. True oxford lacing here.
adidas originals Beckenbauer Track Jacket – $ 47.98 ($ 80)
Perfect for getting back and forth to the gym. And the fact that the pockets zip close is key. Why? Because track jackets almost always have pretty slick fabric. And if you’ve had something slide out of your pockets to/from the gym in the past (keys/wallet/earbuds), you know it’s a disaster waiting to happen. Fabric makeup is 52% cotton, 48% recycled polyester.
MVMT Forty Series “Black Silver” Watch – $ 71.98 ($ 120)
Nothing wild here. Simplicity and affordability. Also one of the five favorites from The Blue Stones. Here’s Tarek’s take on it: It’s just as wearable with a suit as it is with a T-shirt and jeans. Freaky, right?
Thomas and Vine Plain Toe Derby – $ 66.95 ($ 99.95)
A little funky (look at that lighter blue accents on the brown pair) but perhaps that’s what you’re going for at sixty seven dollars. Five different colors to pick from.
Golden Bear Waxed Cotton Car Coat – $ 399.90 ($ 650)
Cheap? Nope. Is it a timeless classic that’s made in the USA from waxed cotton? Yes. Yes it is.
Jack Erwin Hubert Longwing Derby – $ 97.49 – $ 130.65 ($ 195)
Goodyear welted and made in Spain. Not bad for $ 100 – $ 130. Brown will run you $ 130. Black is half off and just under $ 100.
The North Face Campshire Fleece Vest – $ 59.40 ($ 99)
I woulda killed for one of these in 1997. Now? They prove that fashion certainly is cyclical. And I have to admit… that off white option is giving off some pretty cool retro vibes.
1901 Richland Buck Shoe – $ 54.98–$ 73.70 ($ 110)
Bucks that aren’t clunky like traditional bucks. Studded rubber soles too. So, bucks that aren’t just for summertime? Price depends on which of the three colors you’re after.
adidas Tiro Soccer Training Pants – $ 32.98 ($ 45)
Because sometimes you need some new pants to get back and forth to the gym in.
John W. Nordstrom Classic Fit Plaid Wool Sport Coat – $ 299.40 ($ 499)
Made in Italy, 100% wool, and just partially lined.
1901 Bremerton Wingtip – $ 87.10 ($ 130)
From one of their younger leaning house brands. A basic wingtip blucher, which leans more casual than an oxford, but sleeker than your Dad’s or Grandpa’s wingers.
The Rail Fleece Jacket – $ 59.70 ($ 99.50)
My Grandmother had this exact same toilet lid cover.
This Nordstrom Winter Sale is scheduled to run clear through the 24th. Not sure what happens then… if these items go back to a full price, some get marked down further, prices stay the same, or it’s a combination of all three.

The Black Conservative Woman In The Running to Lead Michigan’s Republican Party
Later this month, the Michigan Republican party delegation will select a new chair. The high-profile seat is sought after by a black conservative Gina Barr. The position is currently held by Ron Weiser who is not running for re-election.
Barr has a successful track record with the Michigan GOP. She was hired by the Michigan GOP in 2014, and successfully led its field office in Detroit. Her innate ability to connect with diverse communities led to the implementation of a robust grassroots operation.
Barr’s leadership and tenacious field operations yielded material results for Rick Snyder to win a second term as governor by bolstering his performance in Detroit. Barr helped Snyder win 6.82% of the vote in the deep blue Democratic territory. This was not an easy task given the demographics of Detroit is not inclined to vote Republican. Detroit is comprised of 78.8% black, 9.9% white, and 7.6% Hispanic.
She continued to provide tangible results during the last presidential election. As the Regional Field Director in 2016, Barr’s outreach and engagement strategy resulted in Wayne County producing more than 15,000 votes for President Trump than Mitt Romney received in 2012.
The marginal increase in Wayne County votes proved itself to make a difference in the hotly contested 2016 presidential race in the swing state of Michigan. President Trump narrowly won Michigan’s 16 electoral votes by edging Hillary Clinton 47.6% to 47.3%, and only 11,812 votes separated the two based on the final vote tally.
Coming off the 2016 presidential election, Barr took her leadership and party-building talents to the Republican National Committee (RNC). In 2017, she was hired by the RNC to be the head of urban engagement. In 2018, she was also promoted to be head of women engagement and successfully led both initiatives.
Although Barr is highly qualified to run, winning the highest seat in the Michigan Republican party will not be easy. Her opponent is Laura Cox, a two-term state representative in the 19th district of Michigan. Cox is part of a political family and the wife of former Michigan Attorney General, Mike Cox.
So, what is Barr’s path to victory? Each candidate has tirelessly courted Michigan GOP delegates ahead of the party’s state convention on February 23rd in Lansing, Michigan. Approximately 2,119 delegates will vote to elect the next chair and vice-chair. Barr is not conceding an inch, and she is actively campaigning to secure enough votes to win.
As demographics gradually change in many states and local municipalities across America, the GOP can no longer rely on traditionally red territories to stay the same way. Rather, the Republican party must grow organically by building relationships, promulgating inclusive policies, and crafting a compelling message that appeals to urban voters.

Must-Reads Of The Week From Brianna Labuskes
Happy Friday! Did you guys get as big a kick out of the #healthpolicyvalentines hashtag as I did? (I feel I’m talking to the right crowd here.) They’re quite delightful, including this timely one from KHN’s own Rachel Bluth: “Not even a PBM could get in the middle of our love.”
On to the news from the week.
Thursday was a somber day for many as the country marked the anniversary of the Parkland, Fla., mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead.
On the eve of the anniversary, the House Judiciary Committee approved two bills that would expand federal background checks for gun purchases. Although the legislation faces certain demise in the Senate, it is the first congressional action in favor of tightening gun laws in years. In the votes you see echoes of a recent trend: Lawmakers are no longer treating gun control as “the third rail in politics.” The difference is stark if you look at just over 10 years ago when then-candidate Barack Obama was sending out mailers assuring voters he supported the Second Amendment.
Politico: House Democrats Make First Major Move to Tighten Gun Laws
The Associated Press: Parkland Anniversary Highlights Democratic Shift on Guns
There were too many heartbreaking anniversary stories to highlight just one, but a project worth checking out is one from The Trace, a nonprofit news organization that reports on gun violence. In the year since Parkland, nearly 1,200 more children have lost their lives to guns. The Trace brought together more than 200 teen reporters from across the country to remember those killed not as statistics, but as human beings with rich histories.
14 Children Died in The Parkland Shooting. Nearly 1,200 Have Died From Guns Since.
A handy reference: The good people at The Tampa Bay Times and the AP put together a useful list of all the gun laws that have been enacted in the country since the shooting.
There are some lawmakers on the Hill who are almost giddy to hold hearings on “Medicare-for-all” — and they’re not Democrats. Republicans have been struggling to find a winning stance on health care, ever since Dems’ midterm victories, which were attributed in part to their stance on the issue.
For the previously floundering GOP lawmakers, MFA is practically a gift-wrapped present that fell right into their laps. They’re confident they can frame the idea as reckless, radical and expensive, and pick off moderate voters who want to keep their insurance the way it is. Democratic leadership blasted the GOP’s calls for hearings as “disingenuous,” but MFA supporters were raring to duke it out — verbally, of course. “They think it’s going to be a ‘gotcha’ moment,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) in Politico’s coverage. “But they have been wrong on this and continue to be wrong on it.”
Politico: Republicans Can’t Wait to Debate ‘Medicare For All’
Meanwhile, Democrats introduced legislation this week that would allow people over 50 to buy in to Medicare. The measure is much more politically palatable than MFA, and its sponsors are selling it is a realistic and incremental step in the direction toward universal coverage.
Politico: Push for Medicare Buy-In Picks Up With ’50 and Over’ Bill
Here’s something you don’t hear every day: Republicans and Democrats maybe (just maybe!) have found some common ground on the health law. As part of a package of bills to shore up the Affordable Care Act, Democrats are proposing slapping some consumer warnings on short-term plans. The hint of bipartisanship in the air, though, was limited to the advisories — Republicans were not fans of the rest of the changes proposed.
Modern Healthcare: Short-Term Health Insurance Plans May Get Consumer Warnings
Advocates deem Utah’s move to limit voter-approved Medicaid expansion as a “dark day for Democracy.” The governor and lawmakers who rushed through the restrictions to the expansion, however, say the work requirements and caps are necessary to make it sustainable for the state.
The Associated Press: Utah Reduces Voter-Backed Medicaid Expansion in Rare Move
As 2020 comes into focus, the abortion debate is definitely on the front burner for President Donald Trump, who has seized on recent controversies over so-called late-term abortions. This week, Trump and White House officials met with advocates, including Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. While the discussions weren’t open to journalists, Dannenfelser confirmed that Trump was keenly interested in the issue. “The national conversation about late-term abortion … has the power to start to peel away Democrats, especially in battle grounds,” Dannenfelser said in The Hill’s coverage.
The Hill: Trump Offers Preview of Abortion Message Ahead of 2020
There was some movement in the agencies this week that should be on your radar:
— The Food and Drug Administration has announced it’s cracking down on the $ 40 billion supplement industry, especially targeting diseases that really should require medical care. Right now, that landscape is pretty much the Wild Wild West, where anything goes. And consumers don’t realize that.
— The Environmental Protection Agency has released its plan to address long-lasting toxins in drinking water. Activists were not impressed, saying the “action plan” was quite short on action.
Reuters: U.S. Unveils Plan to Control Some Toxins in Drinking Water, Sets No Limits
— The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released two major proposed regulations that are meant to help ease patients’ access to their health care records. Right now, many health care providers and hospitals offer patient portals, but they often lack material such as doctor notes, imaging scans and genetic-testing data. Sometimes they’ll even charge for the data. The rules would address restrictions such as those.
The Wall Street Journal: New Rules Could Ease Patients’ Access to Their Own Health Records
In a sign of the growing awareness about the United States’ maternal mortality problem, the task force that sets the standards insurers are required to follow is expanding its guidance when it comes to depression during and after pregnancy. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force already recommends that doctors screen pregnant women and new mothers, but the old guidelines focused on patients who were experiencing symptoms. The new advice is more proactive about addressing women who may be at risk.
It’s a well-established fact that doctors have an unconscious bias when it comes to race and pain — one that leaves many minority patients undertreated and undermedicated. What’s interesting is to see how that disparity has shaped the opioid epidemic in the country — the ones that wreaked havoc on white communities.
While all eyes are on the massive consolidated opioid lawsuit in Ohio that’s being compared to the Big Tobacco reckoning of the ’90s, this little case in Oklahoma might steal its thunder.

What Online-Only Beauty Brands Do You Love?
There are so many brands now that don’t seem to exist in the main stores but are huge driving forces because of social media — so what online-only beauty brands have you tried based on social media ads? What do you love, what was a waste of money? Some notes from me…
Glossier – I forget which product I kept seeing online that made me try Glossier, but a lot of the ones I’ve tried are in my regular rotation, including their Milky Jelly cleanser, their highlighter (Haloscope) and their lash tint (even I can wear it and mascara often bugs me). I’ve also tried their scent (like but don’t love), Boy Brow (not the best for my sparse eyebrows), and the Generation G lip gloss (too dry for me). I still have a good liquid blush but I’d try their CloudPaint next.
Thrive Causemetics – I finally bit the bullet because I wanted to try their mascara; about a month ago I wound up ordering that as well as a lip gloss, a lip liner, and a navy eyeliner. I’m still figuring out how I feel about all of them, to be honest — the mascara seemed a bit gloppy on first applications but it’s definitely more volumizing than the Glossier mascara. The lip liner seems more moisturizing than my MAC one and is unnoticeable. At first I really liked the glossy lip but now I wonder if it’s too “wet” for daily life (my coffee cup gets totally covered in it).
Native Deodorant – I think Target just started carrying this. A friend of the family is really into animal rights and has been trying a lot of cruelty-free brands; I tried Native based on her recommendation and ordered a sampler pack. I like them faaaaar better than Tom’s, which is the only other natural deodorant I tried, and in general I’m wearing them instead of my 15+ year preferred brand, Mitchum. Come summertime we’ll see whether I still use my Native deodorant, but for non-sweaty weather it’s fine. My favorite scents thus far are seasonal Cotton & Powder, Lavendar & Rose, and Vanilla & Coconut — I really hope they make the Cotton & Powder a permanent scent.
Phlur – I wrote before about my love for my new date-night scent, Hepcat…
Hanacure – I wrote before about my experience with the Hanacure mask — to be honest I haven’t bought it again though. (Although, hmmn, I have a bachelorette party coming up in a few months…) It’s now available at a ton more spots, including Barney’s, Neiman Marcus and Amazon.
ColorPop – Who among us hasn’t randomly ordered $ 50 worth of stuff? To be honest I ordered a bunch of stuff many moons ago — two years — and none of it wound up in regular rotation.
The Ordinary – I hesitate to include this brand in the list because a) I mostly heard about it from readers here more than social media, b) it’s now sold at Sephora, and c) there seems to be drama going on behind the scenes – but I use their Caffeine Solution on my eyes, particularly when they’re a bit puffy…
Others that keep popping up in my social media that I haven’t tried yet:
- Mented – nude lipsticks for women of color (probably not for me, but they do look really well done!)
- Prose – custom hair care
- Madison Reed – DIY hair color
How about you guys — what beauty products have you ordered from online-only stores based on stuff you saw or heard about on social media? What online-only beauty products do you love — and what bad experiences have you had?

Colin Kaepernick And Eric Reid Settle Case With NFL For Undisclosed Settlement

Source: San Jose Mercury News / Getty
After nearly two years of a back and forth battle with the NFL, Colin Kaepernick has settled his lawsuit with the league.
In 2016, in response to the police killings of innocent and unarmed Black men, Kaepernick started kneeling in protest during “The Star Spangled Banner.” The whole thing caused a national discussion on whether his actions were unpatriotic. The NFL instated a rule that forbid players form kneeling during the anthem. (The rule has since been suspended.) The NFL was so perturbed by Kaepnerick’s actions that there were rumblings that they weren’t planning on renewing his contract. He opted out of his contract and filed a collusion case against the league, along with teammate Eric Reid, who also knelt with Kaepernick. Reid stayed on for the 2017 season but they didn’t renew his contact after that season.
Now, two years later, the league has settled the case with Reid and Kaepernick, suggesting that there was a good chance they would lose the case if it had gone to trial.
Kaepernick’s lawyer Mark Geragos released this statement regarding the matter.
While Kaepernick and Reid aren’t speak about the amount of the settlement, NFL officials told columnist Mike Freeman that the number is between $ 60-80 million.

Dealing With Confrontation Like A Gentleman
Very few people enjoy confrontation. It often stresses us out and it brings out the worst in us. It’s actually a unique subject to me because I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota where people are traditionally extremely anti-confrontational. And I’m natively from Germany where people are much more outspoken and vocal which leads to more confrontation. No matter where you live or how much you dislike it, you will still have to deal with confrontation
Approaches To Confrontation
Extremely Passive Aggressive
Passive aggressive people are people who are averse to conflicts will deliberately be inefficient. They may not communicate or they may simply pout.
Extremely Aggressive
On the other hand, high conflict people often have an all-or-nothing attitude. They have elements of victim blaming and they’re very aggressive and they look at it more like a battle.
In my experience neither style is productive to actually solve a conflict. So, here is how you can actually get some results.

Keep in mind that the goal of a confrontation is that you solve an issue and improve things. In order to get there, you need to have an open and honest conversation about the issues without being hurtful.
Common Myth: Confrontation = Bad
I would argue confrontations are not bad. The core is just a disagreement between one person and another. We’re all individuals and because of that, there will be confrontations. Just look at a confrontation as a starting point. Rather than trying to avoid it and feeling bad about yourself or others or angry, it’s better to tackle the issue right on. Avoidance will not solve your problems, they will just amplify them and make you feel bad. You may have some bad experiences of confrontations in the past and I hear you, but that doesn’t mean that all future confrontations will end the same way especially if you utilize the points outlined in the video. Keep in mind that you can be assertive and kind at the same time the choice of words
How To Handle A Confrontation Like A Gentleman
It All Starts With You
Take ownership of your issues with confrontation or maybe the elements that contribute to it. Most people I know range anywhere from being a complete pushover who goes along with anything the other person says to a constant aggressor who always wants to tell other people what to do and what is right. Both extremes are unhealthy in the long run and it really helps to put you in an uncomfortable position to try working against it. So if you are generally more of a pushover person that is easily influenced by others try to stand up for yourself and have not others dictate what you do.

On the other hand, if you’re aggressive, it may get you sometimes what you want, but in the end, it just makes you a bully that is not liked by others. In the long run, it will hurt you and your reputation. If you’re mad at someone or you disagree with them chances are you have been doing something that contributed to that situation. If you admit that you make a mistake you don’t all of a sudden lose all credibility. On a contrary, it shows that you’re self-reflective and that you’re open and vulnerable. By leading with an apology and recommitting to a better outcome is it will likely instill a similar behavior with your confrontation partner.
For example, if I’m unhappy with a co-worker because he’s constantly late and I feel disrespected and I feel like my time is wasted I shouldn’t just phrase it that way. Instead, you could say, “You know in the past I know I haven’t always been on time for our meetings. I sometimes had to deal with my daughter, but I promise I’ll do my best to be on time in the future. Lately, I noticed that our meetings haven’t started on time and when you come late to meetings it really makes me feel undervalued and disrespected and I would like to ask you to really recommit to our meetings and try to start them on time.” By making it more about you and how you feel and by avoiding extremes and superlatives, the other person won’t feel as attacked.
Ask What They Think And Feel
As a next step, you can ask them what they think about it, what their feelings are that shows them that you care about what they have to say. Even though you might think the other person is probably to blame for an issue. Think of it this way, you’re two people and so you’re 50% of the confrontation. Take responsibility for your part and I promise you the resolution will be easier and better for both of you.

Going with a mindset of a mutually beneficial resolution rather than I want to win and I want to be right. Someone with a legal background, that’s quite hard but it’s not good to resolve a confrontation outside the courtroom. Especially, if you’re afraid of a conversation you may want to wait for a “good time.” The problem with that is there is no such thing as a good time for a confrontation and the best time is right now. Of course there’s a caveat, ideally, you have a confrontation in person or at the least over the phone. Doing it over text message or email will just prolong the whole conflict and on top of that, it’s hard to read into words because you don’t see how people say things and there’s no tone to the words. So try to have it in person or at least on the phone so people can really see what you mean.
Stay Calm
It’s very important to stay calm even if the other person is riled up. In those situations, it can help to have a pause in there and just keep your composure and don’t tell them what to do but lead by example. If someone screams at you and you scream back they have dragged you down to their level.

Genuinely Listen
The next point is to genuinely listen to what the other person has to say. If you mentally prepare your answer all the while the other person is talking you’re not really absorbing what they’re saying what their core issue is. Sometimes confrontations can be easily resolved because it’s just a feeling that is hurt or something that you don’t even do intentionally but you’re in fact hurting another person. To ensure they understand, listen. It’s best to paraphrase what they said in a sentence with your own words.
Steer Clear Of Absolutes
In a confrontation, always stay clear of absolutes. Using things like, “Oh you never clean the dishes,” or “You always leave your socks on the table,” will not get you any further. It also provides ammunition for the other side to point out singular cases where those things weren’t the case and then make you look like you’re just over exaggerating.

“I” Statements
Rather than blaming the other party, try to stick to “I” statements and talk about how it makes you feel. This not only forces you to focus on your side of the conversation but it makes the other person feel less attacked. For example, rather than saying, “You never show up on time.” you could say, “I feel disrespected when we can’t start the meeting on time.” Do you see? I made it about me and my feelings not about them. If they think about it they know I feel disrespected and we start late because of them but I haven’t said that and they have made that transfer knowledge in their brain and therefore they are more open to change.
Focus On One Issue
Last but not least, try to address just one issue at a time. It’s very easy to put all kinds of different things into one argument but that will rarely help you to resolve anything.
Conclusion
Ultimately there’s no cooking recipe or perfect solution to resolve every conflict but these concepts will surely help you to get a result that is mutually beneficial. It makes you feel better about yourself, the issue and the other party.

Re:la Straddles Art, Fashion With Its Frieze Los Angeles Pop-up
ART PROJECT: A contemporary art fair in Los Angeles seemed just the right place for a line that fancies itself more a statement about the city than a fashion label to make its pop-up debut.
Re:la (shorthand for Regarding Los Angeles) launched its second collection and its first pop-up at the Frieze Los Angeles art fair, which is taking place in the city beginning Friday and running through the weekend. It’s the first time the fair is being held on the West Coast and it has pulled in a number of other fashion participants throughout the greater Los Angeles area, including Maxfield, Rimowa and the artist Alex Israel and Matchesfashion.com.
“We’re so excited to be here,” said Katherine Ross, who started re:la with Angelique Soave about a year ago. “We feel the people coming to Frieze are our perfect audience, so we’re going to see what does well.”
The company currently sells through its online shop and has also worked with a handful of retailers, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Le Bon Marché. The label made a name for itself when it began selling last January a collection of T-shirts, sweatshirts, varsity jackets and leather accessories that provided the

Gucci Launches Initiatives to Foster Cultural Diversity and Awareness
MILAN – Gucci is making good on its promise – and acting quickly.
The Italian luxury company revealed Friday the first four long-term initiatives to achieve cultural diversity and awareness throughout its organization and activities globally, following accusations last week that a Gucci balaclava-style sweater evoked blackface.
The first four initiatives are:
-Hiring global and regional directors for diversity and inclusion;
-Setting up a multicultural design scholarship program;
-Launching a diversity and inclusivity awareness program;
-Launching a global exchange program.
Gucci is pledging to hire diverse talent within key functions and leadership positions of the group, including the design office, and will invest in educating all of its 18,000 employees around the world “to achieve a much higher level of global cultural awareness.”
President and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri said Gucci accepted “full accountability for this incident, which has clearly exposed shortfalls in our ongoing strategic approach to embedding diversity and inclusion in both our organization and in our activities.”
In an interview with WWD earlier this week, Bizzarri pointed to “ignorance of this matter. Certainly, it was not intentional but this is not an excuse.”
A “thorough review of the circumstances that led to this” followed, said Bizzarri on Friday, explaining that he had “also engaged with

Does Beyoncé have a secret archive of celebrity throwback photos?
Does Beyoncé have a secret archive of celebrity throwback photos?

Beyoncé is a curated queen, and as much is evident on her Instagram page. It is, for the most part, a collection of highly professional photos of Bey and her every show-stopping outfit, often uploaded in sets of threes—like a good influencer does.
However, there is one notable exception to Yoncé’s enigmatic social media veil: her birthday tributes. Bey loves to celebrate her famous friends, but she’s not one to post a selfie and call it a day. No, the living legend has a very precise method for her birthday tributes, and it certainly bucks tradition.
Taking the Bey out of B-day, the singer posts solo shots of her friends… as children. And it’s really cute, don’t get us wrong, but, like, where does she find all these photos? She’s Beyoncé, so we don’t doubt she has connections, but we prefer to believe that she is somehow, secretly, the owner of a celebrity throwback photo archive (and museum, maybe?) consisting of millions of never-before-seen retro shots.
Though she’s experimented with this method in the past (see below for baby Oprah circa 2015, and lil’ Solange in 2013 and 2015), she’s really upped her game in the past few months, posting tributes for Michelle Obama, Oprah, Kelly Rowland, and a commemorative series for the late Kim Porter.
So, the question remains: Why does Beyoncé choose to celebrate the women in her life with childhood photos? I’m no psychology expert, but my theory is that it has something to do with being a child star herself. Since she rose to superstardom as a teen, maybe she idealizes her childhood as a time that she was able to be and feel her true self, away from the flashbulbs and materialism that naturally seep into celebrity life? ~Just a thought~.
Anyway, celebrity aside, childhood is thought of as the most innocent and therefore truest time in one’s life, and perhaps Bey’s just trying to showcase who her famous friends are at heart. See me after class for more theories.
Thank you for the tribute posts, Bey. We can’t wait to see what adorable throwbacks you unearth next.

Gucci Creative Director Responds To ‘Blackface’ Design
NEW YORK (AP) — Gucci’s creative director broke his silence Tuesday over an $ 890 sweater that resembled blackface, saying racism was never his intention.
Alessandro Michele, a design force at the Italian fashion house, lamented in a letter to employees both his own pain and “that of the people who saw in one of my creative projects an intolerable insult.”
The black sweater with a pull-up neck featured a cutout surrounded by cartoonish red lips. Michele wrote that it was not inspired by blackface but by the late Leigh Bowery, a performance artist, club promoter and fashion designer who often used flamboyant face makeup and costumes.
Regardless, Michelle said, he takes “full accountability” for the sweater, which was pulled last week amid widespread criticism.
Gucci has apologized, saying in a previous statement posted on Twitter that it was committed to diversity and considered it a “fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected and at the forefront of every decision we make.”
The balaclava-style sweater that covered the nose above the cutout was ridiculed on social media as insensitive and racist. It emerged as attention in the U.S. was focused on old photos showing politicians with their faces blackened.
Other fashion brands have made similar missteps.
In December, Prada said it was no longer selling a line of accessories that featured a character with brown skin and exaggerated red lips after complaints they resembled blackface.
Michele’s internal letter was reported by the site Fashionista.com and Women’s Wear Daily.
Marco Bizzarri, Gucci’s president and CEO, told WWD, “The lack of knowledge of diversity and the consequent understanding are not at the level we expected, despite all the efforts we did inside the company in the last four years.”
The company is now “evaluating all the processes” to ensure “the right level of awareness and visibility,” he said.

Concern Over Kenny G Trapped in a Massive Rose Maze for Kim Kardashian Is Growing
A romantic gift for Kim Kardashian has become a gift for the collective minds of the internet.
To wish Kim Kardashian a very happy Valentine’s Day, Kenny G played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on the saxophone amid innumerable single long-stemmed roses in glass vases.
It appears Kanye West orchestrated the grand overture. But more to the point, people wanted to know, is Kenny G alright? Is he sentenced to play trapped among the endless roses for all eternity? Has he been watered? Has he been fed? These are the questions that kept the internet up at night.
There has been a dual-faceted response to the gesture––it made hearts flutter for its grandeur and made people bristle at how over-the-top the performative stunt was. But forget that. Kenny G’s well-being matters.
It’s hardly the first over-the-top display of love for Kanye West, who is a showman through and through. But of course, the visuals were ripe to be satirized.
Kenny G fans have long have a love affair with the superstar’s seductive instrumental tune. According to BookingEntertainment, it costs $ 150,000 to book him to play songs like “Going Home” and “Don’t Make Me Wait for Love.”
So Kenny G may have been in on the whole sweet idea, but the internet would like people to check on him.
Even Chrissy Teigen had questions about the arrangement.
Lastly, who will sing Kenny G’s song?
Happy Valentine’s Day to us all.

Motley Crue Drummer Tommy Lee Marries Brittany Furlan: ‘We Did It!’
Mr. and Mrs! Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee and actress Brittany Furlan tied the knot on Thursday, February 14.
“It’s official!!!! We’re married!!!” the bride announced on Instagram alongside a photo of two dogs in wedding attire. “MR & MRS LEE YAHOOOOOOOO.”
The American Meme star, 32, gushed about her wedding gown ahead of her big day. “Only bummer about my dress for tomorrow is that it doesn’t have any pockets for snacks,” she joked on Twitter on Wednesday, February 13.
Only bummer about my dress tomorrow is that it doesn’t have any pockets for snacks
pic.twitter.com/lnsueUGkyT
— @BrittanyFurlan (@BrittanyFurlan) February 14, 2019
Two days prior, she marveled at her fate, tweeting, “I can’t believe I went from the most depressed, lonely girl, thinking I would die alone with my dogs, to getting married in 4 days … wow … life is a trip.”
The musician, 56, and the former Vine sensation were first spotted together in June 2017. Eight months later, they were engaged.
Lee announced their big news on Instagram on Valentine’s Day 2018 with a video that showed him holding his fiancée’s hand as she showed off her new heart-shaped diamond. “Well this certainly beats chocolates!” he wrote at the time, adding,“Say hello the future Mrs. Lee.”
Furlan also raved about her husband-to-be: “Best day of my life!!!! I can’t wait to get to spend forever with my best friend #engaged,” she wrote on Twitter.
The couple punked fans in May when the rocker posted an Instagram photo of himself kissing his bride-to-be while standing beneath a makeshift altar in matching robes and slippers. “Did it, I do A LOT,” he wrote at the time.
Their journey to the aisle was far more traditional, however: Furlan shared photos from her bridal shower with friends, including Lee’s bandmate Nikki Sixx’s wife, Courtney Sixx, on Instagram in January.
“I thought I was going to die alone with my corpse being found chewed on by my 3,000 dogs and now I’m here,” she joked.
Lee was previously married to Elaine Bergen from 1984 to 1985, Heather Locklear from 1986 to 1993 and Pamela Anderson from 1995 to 1998.

6 things that can cause irregular periods, explained by a doctor
First things first: Don’t panic

Irregular periods messing with your head? Your mind may be running away with itself and imagining all sorts of possible causes, but usually there’s a simple explanation as to why your cycle isn’t playing ball.
There are a number of reasons why your periods could be irregular (or completely absent), including lifestyle factors, medical conditions and just plain biology.
So to clear some of the fog, Dr Victoria Manning, women’s health expert at River Aesthetics, explains six of the most common causes below. If you’re concerned about irregular periods, always speak to your GP to discuss further.
What causes irregular periods?
Stress
If you’ve been under significant stress lately, whether work or home-related, it may explain why your period is acting up. ‘Stress activates a hormonal pathway in the body called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, via the release of increased levels of cortisol,’ explains Dr Manning. ‘The HPA axis and cortisol help control the stress response in the body.
‘Cortisol release can suppress normal levels of reproductive hormones, potentially leading to abnormal ovulation, anovulation (no ovulation) or amenorrhoea (absence of menstration).’
The contraceptive pill
‘Within your natural menstrual cycle your hormone levels fluctuate throughout the month – the main hormones involved are oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone,’ Dr Manning says. ‘The presence in varying levels of these three hormones trigger different parts of your cycle, such as thickening the lining of the womb, maturing your eggs and releasing them into your fallopian tubes.’
Essentially, the pill alters your hormone levels, which can in turn throw your menstrual cycle out of whack. According to the NHS, the progestogen-only or ‘mini’ pill can cause periods to stop, become lighter, irregular or even more frequent.
‘Oral contraception alters these hormone levels by introducing synthetic hormones. Some have a mix of oestrogen and progestin (a synthetic progesterone), others just progestins. Since these hormones are the key orchestrators of your menstrual cycle, it makes sense that your menstruation and ovulation would be different as a result of taking hormonal birth control,’ Dr Manning adds.
‘When you’re on the pill, you don’t have fluctuations in hormone levels because you’re actively taking synthetic versions that are keeping your levels high. So in essence, the pill inhibits ovulation because the levels of oestrogen and progesterone you’re taking don’t allow the hormone dip that triggers your natural monthly egg maturation and drop.’ If you’re thinking of coming off the pill, speak to your GP.
PCOS
‘Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a common condition that affects the way a woman’s ovaries work,’ explains Dr Manning. ‘The main three features of PCOS are irregular periods, which means your ovaries do not release eggs; excess androgen, high levels of “male hormones” in your body, which may result in physical signs like excess facial or body hair and central weight gain; and polycystic ovaries, where your ovaries become enlarged and contain many fluid-filled sacs.
‘If you have at least two of these features, you may be diagnosed with PCOS.’ For more information, read our guide to PCOS when you’re done here.
Weight gain
‘When overweight, cholesterol compounds in fat cells can get converted into a type of weak oestrogen called estrone,’ explains the doctor. ‘Overweight or obese women carrying extra fat cells have “little estrone-making factories”, which can have an oestrogenic effect on glands.
‘This added oestrogen can cause bleeding or irregular periods. A woman may go months without ovulating, for example, but the uterine lining is still building up to the point that it becomes unstable. This can cause prolonged or very heavy bleeding.’
Weight loss
‘On the other end of the spectrum underweight women and women with eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa, which result in extreme weight loss may also be unintentionally impacting their menstrual cycles. Women without much fat on their bodies may have fewer periods or go longer without ovulating.
‘Starvation, as well as extreme exercise and stress, can trigger an effect that suppresses the brain. These women may be so underweight that their bodies simply stop making oestrogen. Additionally, the lack of fat doesn’t allow cells to convert cholestrol into extra oestrogen.’
Perimenopause
‘During the years leading up to the menopause, known as perimenopause, shifts in hormone levels can fluctuate quite significantly causing changes in the menstrual cycle,’ explains Dr Manning. ‘During a normal menstrual cycle, the levels of oestrogen and progesterone increase and decrease in a regular pattern. Ovulation occurs in the middle of the cycle and menstruation about two weeks later.
‘However, during perimenopause, hormone levels may not follow this regular pattern and as a result you may have irregular bleeding or spotting. Some months your period may be longer and heavier and others shorter and lighter, the number of days between periods may increase or decrease and you may begin to skip periods.’
Note that the purpose of this feature is to inform, not replace one-to-one medical consultations. For advice tailored specifically to you, always discuss your health with a doctor

Suits For Leisu — I Mean, Nontraditional Suits
Some designers and brands are betting that men are ready for a new kind of suit. The generation of men who’ve entered the workforce in recent years may be the first where the expectation that they wear a suit to the job interview, let alone the office every day, is low. The garment that was the standard for men at (white collar) work for decades is, for most, obsolete. I’m not making an argument against suits, just stating a broad truth.
As business casual took over offices in the 1990s, suit sales broadly declined, only to be buoyed in the 2010s by renewed taste for tailoring. Guys (maybe you know one) didn’t have to wear tailored clothing, but they wanted to. Rather than wearing it out of obligation and in settings where the intent was dressing up, they were wearing suits more casually. And tailoring has moved to meet the market — softening shoulders, broadening fabric selection, and increasing custom options.
But as popular tailoring designs became more casual (patch pockets!), some designers who don’t make traditional suits have been offering quasi-suit options. Rather than deflating a traditional lounge suit of its formality, the new suits are more like casual clothing shoved suitward. They don’t necessarily have the guts of traditional tailoring–canvassing, padding, worsted and flannel wool fabrics.
The marketing for these “suits” does not acknowledge the existence of an office. There’s a word I’m tempted to use to describe them, but as Stephen Malkmus once sang, “A leisure suit is nothing to be proud of in this late century.”
18East
The examples I’m thinking of are from brands like 18 East, Older Brother, and Ijji. This fall, Antonio Ciongoli, who made terrific casual suits when at Eidos, released what he called an “eastern suit” — a cardigan or kimono style jacket in woven fabric (corduroy or a rough-textured cotton) matched with almost pajama-like trousers in the same fabric. It’s not something I’d wear to a desk job, but it’s an interesting option for occasions that I’m not really cool enough to get invited to, like the wedding of a promising visual artist and a documentarian held after hours at a restaurant that doesn’t take reservations.
18East “eastern suit” in corduroy.
Ijji Clothing
Ijji and Older Brother make unisex clothing (OB calls it “universal clothing”) that calls to mind 1970s California — the spiritual home of the original leisure suit. Ijji, the name of which draws on the Japanese word meaning “easy pants,” makes drawstring pants and simple, patch pocket work jackets in the same fabrics, which together can be worn as a suit. There is admittedly a slight cult-y vibe to wearing dyed to match cotton clothing, but there’s some appeal in the idealistic simplicity of a tonal palette. Their pants have a drawstring and high rise. A lot of these clothes remind me of the costumes for the 2013 film Her, which costume designer Casey Storm has said were intentionally done in simple cuts and natural fabrics:
All the costumes in the film are things someone could be wearing now, but we don’t have any denim or belt buckles or ties or baseball hats. We barely have a collar or lapel. The waist lines are all higher.
The workwear roots of the brand bridge the conceptual gap a bit between “suits” and “uniforms.”
Ijji clothing.
Older Brother and Others
Older Brother’s sustainability-focused, slightly hippie pitch is almost utopian (if slightly cornball) — they tout a “farm to body” philosophy and the healing power of the mushrooms they use in their dye. But the clothes themselves look pretty great. They have made a suit jacket with actual lapels, but have also made cardigans and pants in the same fabrics for another version of this “suit.”
Older Brother. They like mushrooms.
None of these brands officially sell their clothes as a suit, and for me part of the appeal is actually in the value of the items as separates. First of all, these are generally cheaper than traditional tailoring, which makes sense as the construction is simpler. Secondly, while I might not wear the pieces as a suit often, they’re interesting enough on their own that if you bought, for example, 18east pants, it might be worth buying a jacket as well; then you have the suit option.
Other lines that come to mind that have for a while made same-fabric tops and bottoms that could conceivably be a suit are Engineered Garments (technically I own a ripstop “suit” from EG–they make some traditionally shaped jackets but with un-businesslike silhouettes) and Craig Green, whose quilted jackets and pants are pretty striking in his runway shows, and who also draws a lot on the concept of uniformity.
Craig Green designs.
Engineered Garments has for a decade or more made tops and bottoms in the same fabrics.

Police Questioning ‘Persons Of Interest’ In Smollett Case

CHICAGO (AP) — Detectives are interviewing two “persons of interest” who surveillance photos show were in the area of downtown Chicago where “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett said he was attacked last month, police said Thursday.
The two men aren’t considered suspects but may have been in the area at the time Smollett said he was attacked, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Smollett said two masked men shouted racial and homophobic slurs before attacking him and putting a rope around his neck around 2 a.m. on Jan. 29.
Guglielmi told The Associated Press that the two men are the same people shown in surveillance photos released last month by police. Guglielmi said the men were identified through advanced technology, interviews with Smollett and witnesses, and transportation records.
Smollett, who is black and openly gay, told ABC News in an interview that aired earlier Thursday that he believes the people of interest are the ones who attacked him.
“I don’t have any doubt in my mind that that’s them,” he said. “Never did.”
No arrests have been made in the case. Police said they have not found surveillance video that shows the attack but that the investigation is ongoing.
Smollett also told the ABC News that people who question his narrative of the attack were “ridiculous” to think he would lie. Smollett has said he was attacked while out getting food at a Subway restaurant.
“I’ve heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative,” he said. “I’m not gonna go out and get a tuna sandwich and a salad to meet somebody. That’s ridiculous. And it’s offensive.”
He said he didn’t remove the rope from around his neck before police arrived “because I wanted them to see.”
The singer and actor said the attackers also yelled “this is MAGA country,” referencing President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Smollett said earlier reports from some media outlets that his attackers were wearing “MAGA” hats were inaccurate.
“I didn’t need to add anything like that,” he said. “I don’t need some MAGA hat as the cherry on top of some racist sundae.”
Smollett said he didn’t want to call police at first, but that his friend and creative director, Frank Gatson, called on his behalf. Smollett also said he didn’t initially want to give police his cellphone because the device contained private content and phone numbers.
Smollett later gave detectives heavily redacted phone records that police have said are insufficient for a criminal investigation.

The 18 Best Black Books of All Time for Black History Month
Black History Month is underway, and black people are getting all the feels that come with historical blackness. The month of February signifies a celebration of all things black. Together, we collectively acknowledge the African American experience—dating back to 1619 when the first enslaved African pressed his feet onto American soil. It is only right to pay homage to our ancestors’ malleability, black excellence, and those who have impacted our history as well as the culture. It is also a good time to soak up all the unknown stories and marvels of our heritage. Plenty is surfacing online via social media. However, black books are the ultimate source to immerse ourselves in the resilience and wonderment of blackness past and present.
18 Best Black Books for Black History Month

Ones to Watch: Contemporary Labels 16Arlington, Deborah Lyons, Laviate Focus on the Customer First
LONDON — Of the four major fashion capitals, London is best known for its creativity, avant-garde labels and experimental designs because of its influential fashion schools as well as Britain’s indie spirit and centuries-long embrace of many cultures.
At the same time, the city is rapidly becoming a hub for contemporary labels that describe themselves as “affordable luxury,” with prices starting at around 600 pounds for a dress — and an alternative to pricy designer fashion.
16Arlington, which launched two years ago, may be showing for the first time on-schedule at London Fashion Week, but it’s far from a novice brand. Unlike many young designer businesses, it has already built a solid business foundation, with strong wholesale relationships and a production pipeline, with manufacturing done in the U.K.
“We have a definitive design aesthetic, but we also want it to be pieces our friends would buy into while targeting a ‘cool-girl’ look. We want it to be a very inclusive brand, and we’re hoping that our price point helps us achieve that,” said founders and designers Federica Cavenati and Marco Capaldo. They added that a close relationship with their manufacturers helps them to keep prices in check.

Podcast: KHN’s ‘What The Health?’ “Medicare-For-All” For Dummies
Republicans are still in charge of the White House and the Senate, but the “Medicare-for-all” debate is in full swing. Democrats of every stripe are pledging support for a number of variations on the theme of expanding health coverage to all Americans.
This week, KHN’s “What the Health?” podcast takes a deep dive into the often-confusing Medicare-for-all debate, including its history, prospects and terminology.
This week’s panelists are Julie Rovner of Kaiser Health News, Joanne Kenen of Politico, Paige Winfield Cunningham of The Washington Post and Rebecca Adams of CQ Roll Call.
Among the takeaways from this week’s podcast:
- Medicare-for-all is a new rallying cry for progressives, but the current Medicare program has big limitations. It does not cover most long-term care expenses, and includes no coverage of hearing, dental, vision or foot care. Medicare also includes no stop-loss or catastrophic care limit that protects beneficiaries from massive bills.
- Though recent comments by Sen. Kamala Harris on eliminating private insurance with a move to Medicare-for-all stirred controversy, private insurance is indeed involved in many aspects of the government program. Private companies provide the Medicare Advantage plans used by more than a third of beneficiaries, the Medicare drug plans and much of the bill processing for the entire program.
- Many consumers — and politicians — are confused by the terms being thrown around in the current debate about Medicare-for-all. The plan offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and some of his supporters would be a “single-payer” system, in which the government would be in charge of paying for all health care — although doctors, hospitals and other health care providers would remain private. Others often use the term Medicare-for-all to mean a much less drastic change to the U.S. health care system, such as a “public option” that would offer specific groups of people — perhaps those over age 50 or consumers purchasing coverage on the insurance marketplaces — the opportunity to buy into Medicare coverage.
- Sanders’ vision of Medicare-for-all is based on Canada’s system. But even there, hospitals and doctors are private businesses, drugs are not covered everywhere, and benefits vary among the provinces.
- The health care industry is nearly united in opposing the talk of moving to a Medicare-for-all program because of concerns about disruption to the system and less pay. Currently, Medicare reimbursements are about 40 percent lower than private insurance.

Ermenegildo Zegna Flagship Opens in New York
Ermenegildo Zegna opens today a flagship in a New York landmark — the storied Crown Building.
Located at 4 West 57th Street and covering 7,128 square feet, the store was designed by longtime Zegna go-to architect, Peter Marino, who conceived a concept for the unit.
Zegna’s arrival is another indication that 57th Street is increasingly turning into a luxury hub of retail transformation and retail towers. As reported, Nordstrom and David Yurman are moving in, Chanel almost doubled its presence and Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille last October opened its largest store, to name a few.
Zegna’s existing Fifth Avenue store is expected to close by the end of the month. The banner in Brookfield Place overlooking Wall Street will continue to stand. In the U.S., the Italian men’s wear company counts 19 stores and seven outlets.
The striking facade of the flagship is composed of metallic strings, a reference to yarns and the company’s textile expertise, which overlay two glass floors. LED lights illuminate the abstract fabric threads at night.
To convey the Ermenegildo Zegna sensibility, there is vintage furniture, artworks and an innovative installation to present the products, which will change throughout the year and be linked with the displays in the windows.

How to Be Happily Single… on Valentine’s Day
Last Valentine’s Day, a number of readers requested a post on how to be content as a single person on Valentine’s Day. While I’ve had a ton of single years, I’ve also been married for almost ten years now. So I asked my good friend, Auntie M. — who knows a thing or two about being a singleton on Valentine’s Day — to offer her thoughts… – Kat
I have spent a lot of holidays alone. I’ve also spent plenty of holidays coupled up, but if you can name a holiday — Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve, 4th of July, my birthday, certainly Valentine’s Day — I can tell you about the time (or times) I spent it on my own.
Here is what I’ve learned:
It can actually be pretty great.
If you’re facing a holiday solo, my first suggestion is to travel, if possible. Get out of town. Go somewhere new. It might be kind of a bummer to spend an important day alone at home, but it’s kind of badass to spend it in an entirely new place altogether, right? I’ve spent multiple New Year’s Eves surrounded by strangers in some pretty far-flung places, and, yeah, I didn’t have anyone to kiss at midnight, but I do have some amazing memories — and some pretty respectable stamps in my passport.
If travel isn’t a possibility, find a way to engage in some meaningful self-care. For me, this means some kind of spa-type treatment, like a massage at a fancy place I normally wouldn’t visit, followed by a meal I find truly delicious (plan ahead so you can make something yourself and avoid the V-Day crowds and price hikes at local restaurants). Or, take care of yourself in other ways — a relaxing nighttime yoga class, maybe, or a night of watching your favorite movies or TV shows. Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s something that you truly enjoy, and not something you think you “should” do. Take a night off of from “should,” and, well, treat yourself.
My final go-to trick for spending a meaningful holiday solo is to set up new traditions for myself — something I can carry forward to future holidays. I do this on New Year’s Day, by doing things that are symbolic of the year I want to have (working out, cooking something healthy, finding things I no longer need that are in good condition to donate to my local charity shop). There’s no reason why this can’t apply to Valentine’s Day as well. Get creative, and come up with new ways to spend Valentine’s Day that you can do in the future, with or without a partner.
Valentine’s Day marketing is everywhere, but the truth is, you don’t actually need to feel burdened by the constant messaging that your value comes from being in a relationship. You are valuable regardless, and you are entitled to feel good about yourself without relying on another person to validate those feelings. Give yourself permission to make the holiday your own, and only do those things that reaffirm what you love most about yourself.
Readers, what are your best tips on how to be content as a single person on Valentine’s Day — or to otherwise be happily single? Do you have traditions for spending holidays by yourself — and what are they?

Christy Turlington Burns Returns to the Runway After 30 Years
After 30 years away from the runway, Nineties supermodel Christy Turlington Burns closed the Marc Jacobs fall 2019 show at New York Fashion Week.
Although appearing in ad campaigns since her last catwalk, Turlington Burns has been absent from the runway since 1989. She made her return at Jacobs’ show Wednesday night dressed in a feathery black gown and matching headpiece.
The supermodel had initially given up the catwalk to pursue a college degree. Turlington Burns has since focused on philanthropy, starting the nonprofit organization, Every Mother Counts, which works to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world.
Turlington Burns isn’t the only model to make her runway return at the Marc Jacobs show. Karlie Kloss, absent from the fashion week runways for the past few seasons, was also seen walking Jacobs’ runway sporting a gray coat. Kloss has also ventured outside of modeling for the past few years, starting Kode With Klossy, a free coding camp for teenage girls, and filming Bravo’s reboot of “Project Runway,” on which she serves as the host.
Marc Jacobs has a history of memorable runway model moments at his shows. During his fall 2014 show, reality TV star turned model Kendall Jenner made

Christoph Waltz on How to Play the Villain and Dreaming of a Tarantino Reunion
Christoph Waltz can do just about anything on-screen, as evidenced by the diverse roles he’s tackled since winning his first Oscar for his breakout 2009 turn as the ruthless and cunning SS officer Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Be it as a bounty hunter in Tarantino’s Django Unchained (for which he won his second Academy Award), as a computer genius searching for the meaning of life in Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem, or as the dishonest husband of artist Margaret Keane in Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, the 62-year-old Austrian actor has exhibited a range and versatility that’s made him one of Hollywood’s most valuable artists. And with his latest, Alita: Battle Angel, he continues that streak, proving that he’s always ready for a new challenge—which, in this case, means kicking some serious ass.
Not that he was chomping at the bit to get in on the rock-’em, sock-’em action.
“I’m not eager,” Waltz candidly admits about his combat duties in Robert Rodriguez’s sci-fi saga (in theaters Feb. 14). “Eagerness very easily turns into an obstacle. The action, if it’s required, I’m happy to do it. If it’s dangerous, I’m not doing it at all, because there are highly accomplished professionals to take care of that. And if it’s something I can do, I do it not only willingly, but happily. But eagerly? I wouldn’t call it that.”

‘Empire’ Star Jussie Smollett: You’d Believe Me if I Was Attacked by Black or Muslim Guys
Jussie Smollett addressed his doubters on Good Morning America on Thursday, explaining what it was like to be the victim of a hate crime outside of a Subway at 2 a.m.
“I’m pissed off,” he told ABC’s Robin Roberts in his first interview. “It’s the attackers, but it is also the attack.”
Smollett, who is openly gay, has faced increasing skepticism about the details of the January 29 attack, but he maintains his story. He says that a few hours after landing back in Chicago late at night, he went searching for food, first to a Walgreens he thought was open all night, and then to a Subway where he had a sandwich and salad.
