Here at Mashable, the Elizabeth Holmes obsession could not be stronger.

We’ve read the book, listened to the podcast, watched both of the documentaries — and have been wearing nothing but black turtlenecks for the past six days. (Okay, not really on that last part, but we have been blinking less.)

While Alex Gibney’s Theranos doc for HBO The Inventor took the internet by storm after its premiere last Monday, us Holmes aficionados know the two-hour film barely scratched the surface on this fascinating ex-CEO.

If you’re new to the Holmes craze, welcome! We’re so happy you’ve joined us. Now that you’re one of the crew, let’s round out your knowledge a bit beyond what the doc covered. Read more…

Calling all Disney lovers…

Words by Sophie Saleh

Your wishes are about to come true, as MAC has announced a collaboration with Disney’s live action Aladdin movie, which hits cinemas on the 24th May.

Packed with a mix of precious metals and Jasmine-inspired jewel tones, there’s no doubt you’ll be left feeling like a princess when this drops.

MAC’s senior artist and BBC 3 Glow Up judge Dominic Skinner took to Instagram to confirm the news, writing: ‘Just you wait till you see what the collection has in store for you!! Your wish, our command!

‘Manifest your magic with the Disney Aladdin Collection by M·A·C. Launching this May, this wish-fulfilling collaboration highlights the self-determination and confidence of Princess Jasmine in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disneu’s animated classic, Aladdin – in theatres May 24.’

The campaign puts Naomi Scott, who plays our hero Princess Jasmine in the upcoming film, at the forefront adorned in turquoise and gold.

A lot of the details are still yet to be released, but at the moment there are three products that we know about – cleverly mirroring the Genie’s three wishes granted to Aladdin. Until then, you can sign up for Aladdin updates on MAC’s website.

So far we’ve seen an eyeshadow palette, lipstick and bronzer, all encased in beautifully golden packaging, and MAC have shared some of the eyeshadow swatches on Instagram. All we can say is, take our money NOW.

MAC Aladdin

We’re already lusting over the nine-pan eyeshadow palette filled with purple and golden shimmers, and the hot pink lipstick named A Whole New World has really caught our attention. Not to mention the warm-toned bronzer that we hope will give us that Jasmine-esque glow.

The limited edition collection is said to be available on the 1st of May, so be sure to save that date as it’s going to sell out pretty fast. And, if we’re lucky, there may be a few more additions to the colourful range.

Thanks, Genie.

Sony Pictures Picks Up ‘Hair Love’ Film About Black Father Doing Daughter’s Hair

Mom and Daughter in a Home

After raising money for two years, retired NFL player Matthew Cherry’s short-film Hair Love has been picked up by Sony Pictures, Deadline reports. The animated short film shows a black father who is learning how to do his daughter’s head of thick curls for the first time.

Cherry’s Kickstarter fundraising goal for the film was set at $ 75,000 and he went well over his goal, raising $ 284,058.

“In the past year, it has been very clear that audiences have been yearning to see fresh stories that are universal and culturally authentic,” Sony Animation President Kristine Belson said. “Hair Love is a wonderful father-daughter story and we are proud to nurture talented young filmmakers like Matthew who are breaking new ground.”

Cherry, who also executive-produced Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, is happy to see his film come into fruition to help increase representation of African-American characters in animated films.

“It was important to get this story out there and we are so grateful to Sony Pictures Animation for their generous support in helping us make that happen,” Cherry said. “They have championed it from its early stages and we cannot wait to share the project with the world.”

Hair Love will be released later this year. There will also be an accompanying children’s book that will be released May 14th and is available for pre-order.

RHONY Bethenny Frankel Is All Of Us! She Too Wants The Ladies On RHOBH To Shut Up About Puppygate!

Just like every other Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fan, Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel is sick and tired of puppygate. This week on Twitter, the Skinny Girl mogul told fans that she was four episodes into Season 9 of RHOBH, and she couldn’t believe all the focus was on a dog.

“I need everyone to tell me where they stand on #rhobh bc I think I may be seeing a different show than I heard about. I’m 4 episodes in. FOUR episodes about a #DOGBACLE,” Frankel tweeted.

Frankel went on to beg her west coast counterparts to “stop talking about the dog,” and she made it clear that no one cares about text messages to Teddi Mellencamp. The dog didn’t work out, and it was returned, said Frankel, then she asked if she was missing something.

The RHONY star says that Dorit Kemsley should have given the dog back to Lisa Vanderpump instead of dropping it off at a shelter, but that doesn’t mean she backs LVP. However, Frankel doesn’t support the rest of the RHOBH cast who have ganged up on the restaurateur.

Even though Frankel is friends with Kyle Richards and Lisa Rinna, she says that she watches the show with a fresh perspective and she occasionally texts her friends to share her thoughts. Frankel does admit that even though the puppygate storyline is weak, it keeps pulling her back in.

During the most recent RHOBH episode, Mellencamp and Kemsley seemingly made up after Mellencamp admitted her role in the dog drama. But, as Newsweek points out, both women are still at odds with Vanderpump because she apparently masterminded the whole thing to make Kemsley look bad.

Mellencamp appeared on Watch What Happens Live after the episode aired, and she told host Andy Cohen that Kemsley was more forgiving of her than Vanderpump because she knows the truth.

Mellencamp explained that the original story she heard in the Bahamas was “gnarly,” and was very different from the truth.

“I first get a call from John Blizzard, and he’s like, ‘Hey, Dorit’s not calling Lisa back, so she’s gonna text her, Teddi knows.’ And then it just all spiraled from there,” said Mellencamp.

New episodes of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills air Tuesday nights on Bravo.

Catch Bethenny Frankel on the Real Housewives of New York Wednesday nights on Bravo.

What Black Investors Need to Know about Opportunity Zones

Black investors have historically invested in land to build wealth. Real estate is generally seen as a solid investment because property values typically rise over time. Property can be passed from one generation to another; used to diversify an investment portfolio; and is considered less risky than the stock market. Now, there is a new option for blacks to become investors and receive tax breaks with a new real estate asset class: Opportunity Zones.

Opportunity Zones are low-income areas the U.S. Treasury classifies as “qualified opportunity zones.” Investors can make these asset investments through Qualified Opportunity Funds.

The investments are geared to accelerate economic development in almost 9,000 designated areas in America and Puerto Rico, says tax attorney Steve Moskowitz, a founding member of the San Francisco-based tax law firm Moskowitz L.L.P.

Opportunity Zones were added as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. They allow investors to defer tax on any capital gains until 2026 and avoid a capital gains tax on the sale of an Opportunity Zone. Those funds are then invested in property and businesses located or operated within the designated QO Zones.

What Exactly are Opportunity Zones?

According to the Economic Innovation Group, the 2017 tax provision provides “a tax incentive for investors to re-invest their unrealized capital gains into dedicated Opportunity Funds.” African American Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) played an integral part in including the zones in the tax law.

The ante is high as there is a massive amount of capital gains that could be invested in Opportunity Zones. Based on estimates that U.S. households and corporations possess over $ 6 trillion in unrealized capital gains, some officials contend that the program has great potential to trigger an influential change in distressed communities.

Even if a portion of that amount of money was committed, it could possibly mean billions of dollars for poor areas across the country. That is because the program is specifically designed to increase economic opportunity by incentivizing new development in low-income urban and rural areas, says Leslie Anderson, president and CEO of the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority (NJRA).

opportunity zones

Leslie A. Anderson, executive director, NJRA

The NJRA is a multimillion-dollar independent financing New Jersey authority created to transform urban communities through direct investment and technical support.

In New Jersey, where the NJRA is based, many of these designated neighborhoods are predominantly black and have suffered from systemic inequality, Anderson says.

How Low-Income Communities Could Benefit

Anderson says Opportunity Zones give residents in these communities a chance to benefit in several important ways. First, the program can create new development with the potential to generate increased employment opportunities, more affordable housing, improved property values, and more comprehensive and higher quality services.

Unfortunately, without incentives, Anderson says investors often see low-income areas as too high-risk, making it very difficult for needed projects to attract the capital necessary to move forward.

“Opportunity Zones offer investors an incentive to invest in projects that can help to redevelop and transform these neighborhoods,” explains Anderson.

Yet, concerns remain from community advocates who feel the program could create gentrification pitfalls in some neighborhoods populated by low-income residents and minority groups.

For instance, these advocates foresee rising prices for housing or other new real estate development in targeted Opportunity Zones forcing current residents to leave those areas.

Anderson says she understands those concerns as does New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver. She says that New Jersey created an inclusive process that intentionally engages the communities that have been designated as Opportunity Zones.

The governor’s office is holding a series of community forums to educate residents and local businesses, answer questions, understand community needs, and address concerns.

Additionally, the NJRA will meet with local mayors to advise them on leveraging Opportunity Zones to generate projects that directly impact the people who need them most.

Anderson says the NJRA has used its financial resources to leverage nearly $ 4 billion in new investments, helping to redevelop some of New Jersey’s most economically challenged neighborhoods.

“We are also working to ensure that community-based organizations and existing businesses are full participants in the local implementation of the program and can partake in development opportunities.”

Another issue the NJRA is addressing is one of investors mainly focusing on larger cities to the detriment of smaller urban areas.

“We are making a major strategic push to help investors understand the value and importance at looking at all of the designated zones in the 75 municipalities in the state of New Jersey,” Anderson says.

The NJRA, in partnership with the Governor’s Office and the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), recently launched a website that serves as an online mapping tool and a comprehensive resource for residents, local governments, and potential businesses and investors.

Information for Black Investors and Taxpayers

Black investors looking at Opportunity Zones may do well to ponder these questions:

How does one become an Opportunity Zone investor?

Is there a minimum amount of income or capital gain from the sale of stock or other assets they must have to become such an investor?

In order to invest in an Opportunity Zone, Anderson says an investor must create a Qualified Opportunity Zone Fund, which is any investment vehicle organized as a corporation or partnership with the specific purpose of investing in Opportunity Zone assets.

The fund must hold at least 90% of its assets in the qualifying Opportunity Zones property.

Any tax-paying individual or entity can create an Opportunity Fund, through a self-certification process, which is an IRS form submitted with the taxpayer’s federal income tax return for the taxable year.

Anderson says it is important for black investors to know that they can pool their resources and form a Qualified Opportunity Zone Fund, something the NJRA can assist with.

If you are interested in how such an investment may impact your portfolio and taxes, contact a tax attorney and also get more information here.

New report shares early details about Apple’s first five original TV shows

Apple streaming service

We’re exactly one week away from Apple’s “show time” event at the Steve Jobs Theater, and although the company has yet to share any details about the event, the expectation is that the veil will be lifted on Apple’s streaming service. And now, thanks to a report from The New York Times, we know that five original series are already done filming, and will presumably be ready in time for the launch of the service later this year.

According to the report, five series have wrapped, with “around a half dozen more” on the verge of completion. But the people behind those shows reportedly have not been told when they can expect their shows to debut. All they’ve been told is that their shows will stream on the Apple service “later this year, probably fall.” This has, understandably, given some of the talent cause for concern, especially with a big reveal event just days away.

Today, through his platform as an analyst at ESPN and a Twitter account with nearly 2 million followers, Bilas has emerged as a sort of conscience of college basketball. His is a singular voice that can both deftly break down game tactics for passionate fans and eviscerate the business model supporting the entire enterprise. He’s a fierce critic of amateurism, the NCAA policy that facilitates a free market for handsomely compensated coaches, administrators and TV executives–everyone involved in college basketball, it seems, except the players themselves.

So I’ve journeyed to Charlotte to ask Bilas whether he, who makes a living in the game, reporters who write about it, or anyone who watches college basketball or simply fills out an annual March Madness bracket in the office pool is complicit in supporting a business that, according to Bilas, is “just wrong to the point of immoral.”

Jay Bilas, can we make our tournament picks in peace?

Sure, he says. (Whew.) If you don’t like a law in America, after all, you don’t up and leave the country. You push for change. Bilas knows the skeptics’ line: Since you despise amateurism so much, why don’t you quit your job and do something else? “I find that reasoning to be nonsensical,” he says. “The fact that I differ in policy matters doesn’t mean I don’t love the endeavor. I love it, that’s why I opine on it. If I didn’t love it, I wouldn’t care.”

The 6-ft. 8-in. former center is a licensed attorney who, before becoming ESPN’s lead college-basketball analyst, once subpoenaed Barney the purple dinosaur in a costume copyright-infringement case. But over the past decade or so, Bilas, as much as any public figure, has pushed the case for paying players out of the halls of academia and into the mainstream. He called BS when high school officials in Alabama benched a star basketball player this season because she had deposited an accidental payment from USA Basketball and when the NCAA investigated former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel for selling his autograph at the same time his jersey was being sold on its shopping website. On March 13, Bilas called out the NCAA via Twitter for its tepid two-sentence response to a sweeping college-admissions scandal; several coaches have been accused of accepting bribes to falsely present high school students as athletes in order to ensure their admission to elite universities. Admirers love his hammering. Critics tell him to shut up about this stuff already.

Not likely. On March 8, a federal judge in California found that the NCAA amateurism rules violate antitrust law. She ordered the NCAA to remove caps on compensation related to education for things like tutoring, computers and science equipment. The ruling, ostensibly a victory for the players, falls far short of imposing a free-market system in which college athletes can earn their full worth. In an environment in which multimedia rights to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament go for $ 8.8 billion and coaches can make north of $ 7 million per year, he believes school leaders will eventually have to do the right thing on their own and fairly compensate players. “The idea that the free market works for the entire world, save the athletes, is ludicrous to me,” says Bilas. “Absolutely ludicrous.”

Bilas, who grew up in the Los Angeles area, started sensing this economic imbalance in the mid-1980s, while playing at Duke. But he wasn’t about to speak up publicly. “You knew what got rewarded and what didn’t,” he says. “I wasn’t Norma Rae or anything.” When a former Duke player brought up the idea of boycotting the 1986 Final Four in Dallas, which Bilas and his teammates had reached in his senior season, his response was, “Why don’t we do it next year?”

After his Blue Devils lost to Louisville in that year’s national championship game, Bilas, now 55, played professionally in Italy for two seasons and in Spain for part of a third. He picked up the alien acting gig–sadly, Azeck’s head exploded–one offseason. Bilas soured on pro ball after his Spanish team fined him for missing practice time to take the LSAT and accepted both a spot in Duke’s law school and one on Mike Krzyzewski’s bench, as an assistant coach. He loved coaching but not the itinerant lifestyle, so he settled with his wife Wendy in Charlotte, where he joined a law firm. Soon came offers to call games on local radio, and he joined ESPN as a full-time analyst. He keeps his old office and pitches in on recruiting and business development, but “there’s going to be a point where they walk in and say, ‘Pack your sh-t and get out.’”

As a broadcaster, Bilas figured if he could call out players and coaches for messing up, why should NCAA leadership be off-limits? Wendy encouraged him to sign onto Twitter 10 years ago so he could prove he had more personality than your average geek watching hoops film all day. Bilas is like your bald, slightly hip, bright and upright bio teacher. He tweets rap lyrics from Young Jeezy, daily, before signing off with “I gotta go to work” (since, while once corresponding with a Twitter user, he ended the conversation by saying he actually did have to go to work). Bilas trades in self-deprecation–“You must have low standards,” he told a tickled crowd at a Charlotte fundraising benefit where he was the guest speaker. He’s a needler who can take being needled and, ever the lawyer, recognizes that words matter, not least his own. During the March 9 Duke–North Carolina game in Chapel Hill, he observed on air that the rebounding of North Carolina’s Cameron Johnson has improved “immeasurably.” He then chastised himself, off the air, at halftime. Rebounds, like most things in sports, are nothing if not quantified. “F-cking idiot,” he said backstage.

Bilas was present for the most momentous episode of the regular season: the foot of Duke superstar freshman Zion Williamson ripping through his Nike shoe, resulting in a knee sprain. If Zion’s back at full strength for the tournament, Bilas likes his alma mater’s chances. Zion’s too, of course. “As long as he stays healthy, he’s going to make a billion dollars,” Bilas says of the presumptive top pick in the NBA draft. A Cinderella player to watch: arguably the best shooter in college basketball, Wofford guard Fletcher Magee. “Sounds like he should be somebody’s butler,” Bilas deadpans.

Before wrapping up our talk in the den, I ask Bilas for some bracket tips, now that we don’t have to feel crappy about obsessing over March Madness and all. Earnestly, he suggests going to KenPom.com, a stats site for hoops wonks, and checking out every team’s offensive and defensive efficiency stats. Okaaay. Bilas recalibrates. Most Americans are allergic to KenPom.com and just want to finish the damn bracket before the deadline. Sensing this, he checks out of “Bilastrator” mode and comes out with a bit of sensible advice. “Go with the toughest mascot,” he says.

Rachel Roy Talks Consumers’ Role in Ethical Fashion, White House Chat About Child Labor Issues

A week after discussing child labor with first lady Melania Trump and Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi, Rachel Roy wants to keep the conversation going in the fashion industry.
Roy, a U.N. Women-appointed Champion for Innovation and Change, continues to help organize screenings and talks about the documentary “The Price of Free” that highlights Satyarthi’s crusade to end child slavery. Last week the pair joined human rights activist Kerry Kennedy for one at The New School’s Parsons School of Design. Three more screenings are planned in the next few months including one at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit.
Worldwide, 218 million children between the ages of five and 17 are employed including 152 million who are victims of child labor, according to the United Nations. Of those who are forced to work, nearly half of them — 73 million — work in hazardous child labor conditions.
“What I love about Kailash is that he takes the approach that companies just don’t know. That is actually the case. We think the factories are compliant and that are agents [overseas] are doing what we pay them to do but in many, many cases we don’t know. Then we’re given the chance to correct that. Here’s The Good News About Minimum Wage

WHAT’S THE NEWS ON MINIMUM WAGE?

Put simply, we are seeing progress around the country when it comes to raising the minimum wage. Since 2016, five states and the District of Columbia have raised their wage floor to $ 15 per hour. My home state of Illinois was the latest state to get on the bandwagon, and other states like Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Hawaii are considering legislation as well.

And a number of states have moved to increase their wages to $ 12 an hour in recent years. Combined, these efforts have the potential to benefit millions of workers.

THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE IS CURRENTLY AT $ 7.25. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME WE SAW THE NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE RISE?

The last time the federal minimum wage was raised, to the current $ 7.25 per hour rate, was in July of 2009. Put simply, we have not seen the federal minimum wage adjusted in the decade since the financial crisis. Since then we’ve had positive economic growth, which has been accompanied by inflation.

This means goods cost more, and those dependent on the federal minimum wage jobs have seen their paychecks remain stagnant. Because of this, supporters of minimum wage hikes have turned to the states. And based upon the changes we have seen in the last few years – from referendums to legislation – proponents of a minimum wage have made significant progress.

THERE IS ALWAYS OPPOSITION TO MINIMUM WAGE HIKES. WHAT ARE THE ECONOMICS OF THESE POLICY CHANGES?

Supporters of increases in the wage floor argue that increasing pay for minimum wage workers reduces income inequality and assure that full-time workers with families don’t live in poverty. But those in opposition to minimum wage hikes contend they lead to job losses, higher prices, and hurt smaller businesses who have low profit margins already.

Interestingly, a number of recent studies have found that job losses resulting from minimum wage hikes are significantly smaller than many previously believed them to be. However, the statistic that really sticks out in my mind involves a historical comparison: adjusted for inflation, the current minimum wage is lower than it was in the 1960s.

It is often overlooked that the federal minimum wage, and most state minimum wage rates, are not indexed to inflation. This means that as the cost of living rises and the wage floor remains the same, minimum wage workers get left behind.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM A MINIMUM WAGE OF $ 15?

Great question, Tom. The Economic Policy Institute ran the numbers and the findings were really interesting. According to EPI, the typical worker who would benefit from a $ 15 minimum wage is a 35-year-old woman with some college-level coursework who works full-time. While many think of young people when they hear the phrase minimum wage, less than 10 percent of those who would benefit are teenagers.

By comparison, more than half are adults between the ages of 25 and 54. Nearly 6 in 10 (58 percent) are women, a full 60 percent work full-time, and 28 percent have children. And communities of color would see significant upside. Thirty-eight percent of African-American workers and one-third of Latino workers would get a raise if the federal minimum wage were increased to $ 15.

AND HOW WOULD WORKERS BENEFIT FROM A $ 15 MINIMUM WAGE NATIONWIDE?

The House of Representatives has proposed the Raise the Wage Act of 2019, which would gradually lift the minimum wage to $ 15 per hour by 2024, and the Economic Policy Institute has found the benefits would be truly staggering. Forty million workers— 26.6 percent of the U.S. workforce – would see a pay raise. That includes two-thirds (67.3 percent) of the working poor in our country. Full-time minimum wage earners would see an extra $ 3,000 a year. Finally, a $ 15 minimum wage by 2024 would generate $ 120 billion in higher wages and potentially boost the economy as workers were able to spend more.

The secret Ibiza addresses you need to know about

Georgiana Huddart, co-founder of Hunza G, shares her top things to do in Ibiza

My favourite beach is…

Xucla Beach in the North, it’s so romantic – it’s a little cove beach with an amazing xiringuito that does the best garlic gambas. It has a cave you can swim through and you can walk around the coastline on the rocks and jump off into crystal sea.

My favourite dress shop is…

Vicente Ganesha, in Ibiza town, that not that many people know about, it has the most incredible dresses! Multi layered flamenco dresses. I have worn this blue one so many times and lent it to tonnes of friends, I don’t think I have ever worn it and not been asked where it’s from.

Annie’s in Ibiza is also a great shop for amazing vintage finds and cool current brands. Annie stocks: Rixo, De La Vali, Clio Peppiat, Isabelle Moore & Graham Cruz.

My favourite club is…

DC10 on Monday night for Circa Loco is the only club I go to in Ibiza as it’s not really a club, it’s half outside, the music is incredible, and you can party with planes flying over your head as it’s right next to the airport.

My favourite daytime excursion is…

Going to Formentera for the day is also something everyone goes to Ibiza should do, it’s lovely and has great restaurants and crystal clear sea.

My favourite restaurant is…

Cicale, beautiful as it’s in a very remote countryside location, you sit on a patio with fairy lights and olive trees around you, plus the the food is wonderful and they have a small boutique with wonderful jewellery and trinkets.

Picks of the Week: Three Thrilling Films Out Now About Women Around the World

Picks of the Week is Women and Hollywood’s newest resource. Sign up for the Women and Hollywood newsletter at womenandhollywood.com to get each week’s pick delivered to your inbox.

Pick of the Week: Greta

No good deed goes unpunished in Greta.

The campy thriller sees Chloë Grace Moretz playing Frances, a kind young woman new to New York City. One fateful day, she finds a purse left behind by someone on the subway; the Good Samaritan uses an ID card in the bag to contact its owner, who welcomes Frances into her home. Greta (Isabelle Huppert), a lonely widow living in a foreign land, is grateful to have her purse back, but more grateful for Frances’ company.

Huppert and Moretz have good chemistry as they bond over cinema, tea and cooking. Then, things go sour—and the former begins to stalk the latter, terrorizing her at every turn.

Greta is best viewed in a packed theater. Half the fun of watching the pic is seeing—and hearing—the audience’s reaction as the film becomes increasingly wild and weird. The delightfully absurd roller coaster ride is especially enjoyable alongside other passengers, whether they’re laughing, gasping or sneering at Greta’s twists and turns. (Laura Berger)

Greta opens March 1.

Pick of the Week: Woman at War

Halla (Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir) is a seemingly average Icelandic woman: a choir director trying to adopt an orphan from Ukraine. But behind her apparently normal life, Halla has become a stealth eco-terrorist, using a bow and arrow to knock down power lines and sabotage development in the countryside.

At first, the terrorism is dismissed, but as she becomes bolder and causes more damage, the authorities double down on trying to capture the anonymous warrior who is fighting for a greener future. (Melissa Silverstein)

Woman at War opens in New York and Los Angeles March 1, with a national expansion to follow. Find screening info here

Pick of the Week: Saint Judy

Immigration issues are front and center in the news. Saint Judy reminds you about the people, not the politics, that are affected by the laws.

Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan), a woman trying to make a living as an immigration attorney, has more cases than she can handle and barely gets paid. But when she represents a woman seeking asylum who has been persecuted due to her gender, she winds up changing U.S. immigration law. (MS)

Saint Judy opens in select cities March 1 and will expand March 8. Find screening info here.

Erie Insurance: 6 things to know about the top-rated insurance company

erie insurance sign on office

Erie Insurance may not be a household name around the US, but this insurance company is one that you should take a look at if you’re thinking about shopping around for home or auto insurance.

Money expert Clark Howard looks to the annual insurance company rankings from J.D. Power and Consumer Reports when it comes to recommending where people look to buy their insurance and Erie fares extremely well in both of those surveys.

RELATED: When should you file a claim on your homeowners insurance?

Erie Insurance: Here’s what you need to know

The company was founded in 1925 and today offers a full spectrum of auto, home, business and life insurance. Here’s what you to know about this nearly-100-year-old insurer…

1. Erie Insurance serves 12 states

The company serves customers in a dozen states and the District of Columbia:

  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • District of Columbia

In fact, Erie had nearly 6 million policies in force for auto, home and business insurance at last count.

2. Erie Insurance is a regional insurer with a solid business reputation

Based in Erie, Pennsylvania, the company is actually the 9th largest homeowners insurer and 11th largest automobile insurer in the United States based on direct premiums written, according to the company’s factsheet.

In addition, the property/casualty side of the company has an A+ rating from A.M. Best, the industry’s leading rating agency. Meanwhile, the life insurance part of Erie is rated A. (Editor’s note: A++ is the highest rating available from A.M. Best.)

3. The company is routinely named one of the top insurers in the country

Both Consumer Reports and J.D. Power conduct extensive overviews of the auto and home insurance industry and customer satisfaction after a claim is made.

And when it comes to auto and home insurance, both sources agree: Erie is a Top 5 insurer or better versus all the other national players.

Have a look at some of the impressive marks it gets:

Home insurance

  • #3 best homeowners insurance company according to Consumer Reports
  • #5 best homeowners insurance company according to J.D. Power

Auto insurance

  • #1 for Mid-Atlantic region of the country and #4 for North Central region, according to J.D. Power

Check out the full lists of the best auto insurance companies and the best home insurance companies.

4. Erie Insurance has a new policy for Airbnb hosts

Thinking about renting out your home on Airbnb or a similar home-sharing site? Erie has a new insurance product with you in mind.

Their peer-to-peer house sharing policy costs an average of $ 40 to $ 60 extra per year. It is intended to step in with liability coverage because not all home-sharing sites offer protection for hosts.

With this policy, you’ll be protected “up to the liability limit for certain coverages on the homeowners policy, which typically ranges from $ 100,000 to $ 1 million,” the company notes.

The house-sharing insurance is available in all the states Erie does business in except North Carolina and Viriginia.

5. The company is testing pay-per-mile auto insurance

Erie CEO Tim NeCastro revealed the company is testing telematics for pricing private passenger auto insurance with 3,000 customers in two states — Ohio and West Virginia.

“We’re very pleased with the response and with the experience and we’re looking to expand that program in 2019,” he said during a recent earnings calls. “We plan to be in two more states this summer and then deploy additional territories later in 2019.”

6. The home sensor pilot program has already saved customers big bucks

NeCastro also said Erie has expanded a test of home sensor pilots to 2,000+ households.

“One customer in Ohio, for instance, reported that his sensor detected a refrigerator leak just two days after installation and helped them avoid a costly loss,” the CEO noted.

“Another customer in Pennsylvania credited the sensor for [alerting] him [to a] water leak in his basement and allowing him to take steps to prevent damages. Examples like these reflect the improved proactive experience customers can have with Erie, while also saving us and them the cost of the claim.”

Final thought

Erie Insurance has a great reputation for customer service and does a good job integrating technology into the insurance experience. You may want to look into them if you’re ready to shop your coverage around and you live in their service area.

If You Work From Home, Here Are 11 Tax Deductions You Need to Know About

While there are plenty of pros to working from home,  the downside is it can cost you plenty. from the high-speed internet to stay in touch with clients to the office chair that keeps you comfy while you work.

Fortunately, the government recognizes this and offers tax deductions to people who work out of their homes. Read on to find out what you might be eligible for if you work from home.

Tax Deductions for Self-Employed vs. Remote Workers

Most of the following deductions apply largely to the self-employed, also known as independent contractors. That’s because when you’re an employee of a company, your company foots the bill for 50% of things like Social Security and Medicare taxes, and withholds the other 50% from your paycheck to pay the rest.

But when you’re self-employed, you’re responsible for both halves — something too many independent contractors learn by surprise when April rolls around and they find out how much they owe in taxes. (Plus, the self-employment tax entry moved from Form 1040 to Schedule 1 for 2018.)

As a rule of thumb, you should set aside around one-third of your self-employment income for taxes.

To offset this additional expense, the IRS allows self-employed workers to deduct certain business-related costs, so long as they itemize each of these expenses on their returns. That means you’ll need to keep detailed records and receipts throughout the year.

What You Can Deduct if You’re Self-Employed

According to IRS guidelines, “To be deductible, a business expense must be both ordinary and necessary.” This includes the following:

1. Home Office

Home office.

If you have a dedicated room or workspace in your home you use solely for business purposes, it counts as a “home office,” and you can deduct a portion of certain home expenses for it. It doesn’t need a fixed partition, like a wall or a door to close, but you do need to clearly identify it as a separate space (i.e., a dedicated corner of your kitchen).

So if your home is 1,200 square feet and your home office is 120 square feet, that means it makes up 10% of your home’s square footage, so you can deduct 10% of the following:

  • Rent (NOT monthly mortgage payments).
  • Utilities (heat, electricity, internet, landline).
  • Mortgage interest.
  • Homeowners insurance.
  • Property taxes.

Remote workers, take note: You can only deduct a home office if your employer asks you to work from home “for the convenience of your employer.” If you’ve negotiated a few work-from-home days to accommodate your own schedule, this does not count.

2. Office Supplies

From staples to printer paper, office supplies are deductible. Just be careful with larger “supplies,” like furniture.

If it’s essential to your business (think: desk, desk chair, filing cabinet), you can probably deduct it. If it’s not (think: picture frames and a second, comfier chair for brainstorming in), you probably can’t.

3. Equipment

You can also deduct any equipment you buy for your business, like computers, printers and accessories (headsets, webcams, etc.), as well as any repairs on these items. If you have a smartphone you use solely for business purposes, you can deduct the cost of the phone and monthly bill.

If your industry requires specialty equipment, like camera gear for photographers, that also qualifies.

4. Software

Do you use a paid invoicing system to bill your freelance clients? You can deduct that. Graphic design software, PDF software, word processing software? You can deduct those, too. As long as you use them strictly for business, any software you purchase or pay for monthly qualifies.

5. Travel Costs

Man waiting in airport lounge using a digital tablet.

If you ever need to travel to visit a client or attend a conference, you can deduct your mileage or airfare. The same goes for any lodging, parking fees and other travel-related expenses you incur on your own dime.

Note, however, that if you’re an employee, you can no longer deduct un-reimbursed employee expenses for business-related meals, entertainment and travel, as a result of the 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

6. Meals and Entertainment

Be careful with this category, as it can be all too tempting to write off business meetings that aren’t strictly business.

Coffee meeting with a new client to discuss strategy? Deductible.

Five-course dinner with friends where you spend 15 minutes talking business? Not so much.

As a rule, expect the IRS to limit your deductions to 50% of business-related “entertainment” costs, so keep things modest. For additional guidance, check out the 2018 update from the IRS.

7. Training and Education

You can deduct professional education necessary to run or grow your business, so go ahead and sign up for that course or webinar you’ve been wanting to take.

8. Marketing and Advertising

If you attend a trade show, send out flyers or buy a box of business cards, this counts as marketing, and you can deduct it. Same goes for any fees in connection with a personal website that advertises your services — hosting fees, WordPress theme purchases, etc.

9. Professional Services

When you hire someone to help you with your business, it’s deductible. So keep track of those invoices from the IT pro who debugged your website, the attorney who reviewed a tricky contract and the CPA who put together your tax returns.

10. Health Insurance

You can deduct 100% of your health insurance premiums for yourself and any covered spouse and dependents, if you meet the following criteria:

  • You’re self-employed.
  • Your business is claiming a profit for the tax year.
  • You (and your spouse and dependents) were not eligible for coverage from an employer or under your spouse’s plan during the months you’re claiming.

11. Miscellaneous

Throughout the year, make note of any other expenses that the IRS might consider necessary in the normal course of business. This could include holiday gifts for your best clients (within reason), banking fees, shipping fees, post office box fees, etc.

Business Titan Ken Chenault Opens Up About His Legacy and Career [VIDEO]

Kenneth I. Chenault, one of the most dynamic business leaders in modern times, opens up about his journey to the top of the corporate ladder in a televised interview produced by The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American video oral history archives.

The former CEO of American Express retired in February 2018 after 16 years of leading the financial company’s innovation, transformation, and growth as chief executive. Under his leadership, American Express earned global recognition as a leader in customer service while its signature Membership Rewards program grew into one of the largest customer loyalty programs in the world. BLACK ENTERPRISE first discovered and profiled Chenault in the December 1985 issue and has followed his ascent and career milestones ever since.

Since announcing his resignation, Chenault has extended his business savvy expertise to the boards of corporate giants like Airbnb and Facebook. He also joined venture capital firm General Catalyst as chairman and a managing director last year.

An Evening With Ken Chenault

In November, Chenault spoke openly about his career and legacy with CBS sportscaster James “J.B.” Brown during a live taping at The New York Times Center in New York City. The program, titled An Evening with Ken Chenault, provides a rare inside look into his life and rise to the head of one of the world’s most successful companies. “My most important legacy that I can leave is that I made a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I hope I have been a catalytic agent for change,” he said. “I firmly believe that none of us should be satisfied by the status quo—you should always try to change the status quo.”

The hourlong program also includes exclusive interviews with business luminaries who’ve been directly inspired by Chenault’s leadership, including Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, former Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, Merck CEO Kenneth C. Frazier, and Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr.

“He is a leader, he is competitive, and he is smart,” said Buffett, the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, while describing Chenault. “The real test of leadership is when you go up the mountain and your troops follow you. They follow you because they believe in you and they believe you do see the value over the top mountain. If they don’t see it, they will still follow.”

Julieanna Richardson, the founder and president of The HistoryMakers, said in a statement that Chenault’s story has been “overlooked for far too long and deserves to be highlighted.” She added, “it is critical to show the world that African Americans have had an active role to play in both entrepreneurship and in corporate America.”

An Evening with Ken Chenault airs on PBS local station WNET on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. EST. It can also be viewed online. Watch below.

Black Woman Creates Documentary Setting Record Straight About ‘Green Book’ Movie

Yoruba Richen, an award-winning documentary filmmaker has a new documentary out that tells the true story about black people and the infamous Green Book motorist handbook.

Richen is the writer and director of The Green Book: Guide to Freedom. It tells the story behind the infamous ‘Green Book’ that African Americans used as a guide to travel safely throughout the Jim Crow-era South.

According to a press release about the film:

“The film tells the story of the rise the African American middle class in Detroit, journeys to the oasis of Idlewild (a vacation community in western Michigan where blacks were able to retreat to their “Black Eden” in peace) and the iconic A. G. Gaston Motel in Birmingham, Alabama—a pivotal location in the civil rights movement. The story of The Green Book embodies a quintessential American contradiction—while its creation speaks to the horrors of racial injustices in our past, its success shows the resolve of African Americans to thrive in a world that seemed to root for their failure by means of discrimination, violence and ignominy.”

In an interview with Black Enterprise, Richen discussed her motivation to create the film.

When did you start work on the Smithsonian Channel documentary?
I was approached about the film in the summer of 2017 by the production company Impossible Factual who had the idea to do a documentary surrounding the Green Book. I didn’t know about the Green Book at first but was immediately interested and intrigued to get involved once I learned more about it. It was a story that hadn’t been told before with the opportunity to explore so many themes and storylines within the black experience.

What was your primary motivation to get involved?
I’m a filmmaker who’s interested in exploring complexity and uncovering stories that haven’t been told. The Green Book was such an interesting and important part of our history and a deeper dive into its creation and background hadn’t been told before. As we were filming, even more themes emerged and I was excited to see how that shaped and developed the final documentary you’ll see on the Smithsonian Channel.

Green Book

Documentarian Yoruba Richen

What are two major things that you think people will learn from watching?

Viewers will learn about the importance of the automobile to the African American community and how it was both similar and different to white Americans. The automotive industry played a pivotal role in creating jobs for African Americans and attracting them to settle down in various states throughout the U.S. The automobile also symbolized the quest for freedom and mobility, which it did also for the African American community, but they also had specific challenges to obtain those things. The Green Book was also not used to navigate potential threats of violence but provided a tool to find vacations and recreation spots which African Americans have been seeking and creating forever now.

Do you think the documentary will have any impact on the movie winning the Oscars?
I truly can’t say if the documentary will have an impact on the film winning but I do hope the fiction film will bring attention to our version and perspective of the Green Book and that they will watch the documentary!

The Green Book has been the focus of much attention since the release of the Green Book Hollywood movie. The movie tells the story of musician Don Shirley and his white chauffeur and later actor, Frank Anthony “Tony Lip” Vallelonga as they travel through the Southern United States for an eight-week concert tour Shirley is scheduled to play. Vallelonga, who is from New York, is given a copy of the Green Book, a guide that actually existed, that instructed African American travelers on where to find safe havens throughout the deeply-segregated ’60s South. It is based on a real-life story. The movie is a contender for several Academy Awards this year, including Best Picture, Best Actor for star Viggo Mortenson, and Best Supporting Actor for co-star Mahershala Ali.

The relatives of Don Shirley have since come out blasting the Hollywood movie version for what they call its lies about the relationship between Shirley and Vallelonga.

Richen’s documentary, The Green Book: Guide to Freedom will premiere on The Smithsonian Channel Monday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and is available to stream on the Smithsonian Channel app. Watch a trailer of the film here.

Ancestry.com Releases New Data For Those From the African Diaspora to Unearth More About Their Lineage

Genealogical website Ancestry.com, has released 94 new and updated communities so that African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans can learn more about their roots.

Communities are part of the AncestryDNA test, which lets people from the African diaspora explore their heritage and how their ancestors migrated.

One of the new communities focuses on Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina African Americans. As per Ancestry:

“Members with this community may have ancestors that were enslaved and working on rice plantations in South Carolina and Georgia. When cotton fields came to the area in the late 1700s, many enslaved African Americans were brought to work those fields. Following the Civil War, the Great Depression, and World War II, many South Carolinians followed rail lines up North to New York and Philadelphia. This group was one of many communities that were part of the Great Migration–which was the movement of millions of African Americans during the 1900s from the South to cities in the North and West.”

Ancestry.com

Another new AncestryDNA community centers on Louisiana Creoles and African Americans. Interestingly, Ancestry’s research finds that by 1940 more than 18% of African Americans in the Bay Area were from Louisiana.

Also expanded, are Caribbean communities, with historical information for those from Haiti, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and more. Here is an interesting tidbit from Ancestry research, “Afro-Caribbeans who moved to New York sometimes had difficulty adjusting to their new homes but by 1930 about one-third of New York’s black professionals, such as lawyers and doctors, were African Caribbeans.”

The update also has visuals and a timeline showing the migration of people from the African diaspora including a visual depicting the Great Migration—a mass exodus of African Americans fleeing the racism of the South to areas in the Northern and Western United States.

The company says the new data is based on its proprietary Genetic Communities technology. “With just the results of an AncestryDNA test, we can help unlock stories of the people and places that make up our customer’s recent family histories. These new insights, provided using our unique Genetic Communities technology, can reveal the roles and unique impact our customer’s ancestors played in history,” the company stated in a press release.

Ancestry.com faced criticism last year after a black customer discovered that his enslaved ancestors were referred to as “migrants” in his DNA search results.

“When zooming in on our African lineage from nations like Benin and the Ivory Coast, Ancestry.com suggested that our ancestors had arrived in the South during the ‘migration’ of the past few hundred years,” he wrote in a petition against the company.

Andrew M. says he was “shocked and offended” to read Ancestry’s characterization of his family history. “Migration implies choice,” he explained, and “that is most certainly not what happened to my African ancestors who came here in the hull of a ship like chattel only to be sold into slavery when they arrived.”

Ancestry.com issued an apology at the time. “We apologize for the language used on our website to describe the historic movements of people from one place to another,” said Nat Natarajan, Ancestry executive vice president of Product and Technology at the time. “We understand that not all of the movements of people through history—including Africans brought as slaves to the United States—were made voluntarily. We will make changes to ensure the language on our site more accurately describes these events in history.” The company also changed the language it used in reference to enslaved people on its site.

Daniel Radcliffe just opened up about turning to alcohol to forget his HP fame

‘I really struggled’

daniel radcliffe

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows may have come out over a decade ago, but that doesn’t mean that we’ve moved on from the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

In fact, us millennials are probably still as hooked as we were when the series was actually still going.

Too many of us own wands, chocolate frogs and clothes emblazoned with our Hogwarts House crest (we’re ALL Gryffindor, OK?) and we can all admit to having debated HP theories deep into the night.

It’s hard therefore to remember that the actors have their own lives, with the three leading stars speaking openly about the realities of having fame thrust upon them at such a young age.

This is something that lead actor Daniel Radcliffe spoke out about this week during an appearance on Off Camera With Sam Jones.

Describing his fame, the 29-year-old recalled: ‘I really struggled with particularly in my late teens when I was going out to places for the first time where you would feel – again it could have largely been in my head but – you would feel watched when you went into a bar, when you went into a pub.

‘Then, in my case, the quickest way of forgetting about the fact that you were being watched was to get very drunk and then as you get very drunk, you become aware that, “oh people are watching more now because now I’m getting very drunk, so I should probably drink more to ignore that more.”’

Hermione big front teeth

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson

He continued: ’Part of the thing is the expectation that you should just be delighted all the time. You have a great job, you’re wealthy, you don’t have a right to not be excited about the thing all the time. I think that’s a pressure as well. You suddenly start to feel, “Man, if I am just feeling some human emotion of sadness, does that mean I’m doing this wrong? Am I not good at being famous?”‘

How did he get through it? ‘I have been unbelievably lucky with the people I had around me at certain times in my life,’ he explained. ‘I met some really key people, some actors some of them not, who just gave me great advice and really cared for me. Ultimately it was just my own decision. I woke up one morning after a night, going, “This is probably not good.”‘

Harry Potter fans are coming out in force to praise Daniel for speaking out on the subject.

Faroe Islands: closed for repairs but open about self-promotion

The Faroes will be closed to tourists – except 100 volunteers – for a weekend in April as part of a campaign to promote tourism and sustainability

In parts of the Faroe Islands it rains 300 days a year, a national dish is wind-dried fermented mutton and the population of 50,000 people is outnumbered by sheep. Transforming this archipelago between Shetland and Iceland into a mainstream tourism destination was never going to be easy. However, the Faroese pride themselves on inventiveness and practicality, qualities that have seen tourist numbers increasing 10% a year over the past five years. In part, it’s down to the work of Guðrið Hojgaard, director of the island’s tourist board, who has been selected by Politico as one of the 28 people most likely to “shape the world in 2019”.

Hojgaard is behind the idea that the Faroes “will be closed from 26-28 April”, except for the 100 tourist volunteers who will be given free board and lodging in return for helping with practical projects to improve facilities for the 60,000 visitors who now choose the Faroe Islands for a holiday. The idea (more information at preservefaroeislands.com) is that tourists and locals collaborate on marking paths, creating signs and improving access to beauty spots that have become a success on Instagram. Lord of the Rings-style mountains, cute puffins and shaggy, shaggy sheep that come in dozens of different shades have made this a favourite destination for social media influencers. They fall for its quaintness: turf-roofed houses, dramatic waterfalls and misty Avalon-style landscapes.

Erykah Badu Wants You To Know Reports About Her Stalker Are ‘Overblown’

Erykah Badu has taken to social media to set the record straight about recent reports that a stalker broke into her home.

The eccentric singer shared a video discussing the incident, which she describes as “overblown.”

WFAA reported that a young male had been detained after allegedly trespassing on Badu’s property. A source says the singer referred to him as a “stalker,” adding that he allegedly flew from Detroit to Dallas to meet her and possibly collaborate on a project.

Peep what Erykah had to say about him via the clip below:

News of the stalker went viral after Rebecca Lopez at WFAA-TV tweeted that a stalker had been found inside Badu’s home.

“Dallas Police detained a man who was found trespassing in singer Erykah Badu’s home,” Lopez tweeted Monday evening. “Sources say the singer called him a stalker. He was issued a criminal trespass warning.”

Badu responded to the report with a video message, saying: “There was no break-in, stop it. Story overblown,” she explained. “The only thing that happened was there was a kid on Twitter[who] followed me. Had the hots for me. Came over, wanted to look at me. Wanted to do some music with me. Made a bad decision. Decided this might not be the best thing, then left.”

The Grammy-winning artist noted that it was her neighbors who called the cops after the suspicious male wandered around her neighborhood asking where she lived.

“The neighbors called the cops cause some strange kid was walking around asking where Erykah Badu lived,” she says. “Of course that’s a reason to raise a red flag, and everyone got upset. The city is in an uproar because a kid made a bad decision.”

The soulstress is not sure if the officers took the fanatic to jail or “to the bus stop.”

7 Podcasts to Listen to if You’re Serious About Paying Off Debt

There are some great personal finance books out there. But who has time to read them all?

Sure, there are audiobooks. But some are so dry that not even being stuck in a car can get you to press play.

That’s where podcasts come in: bite-sized, digestible chunks of knowledge that you can get through in one or two commutes. Then, you can move on to the next topic.

They’re great when you need a break from books. But there are so many out there. How do you know which ones are worth your time?

That’s what we’re here for.

The Best Finance Podcasts for People Just Starting Out

As a podcast host myself, I’ve listened to hundreds of finance podcast episodes and rooted through the good ones and the not-as-good.

If you’re just starting to get your finances in order — and you’re looking to spend less, pay off debt and learn where to save — here are the best personal finance podcasts. Our list is sure to cover every personality, preference and time constraint.

How to Money

This is a fun podcast hosted by real-life best friends Joel Larsgaard and Matt Altmix. They start every “How to Money” episode by opening a bottle of craft beer before diving into a widely relevant personal finance topic.

Instead of interviews, you can expect useful conversations between friends that won’t make you feel like a third wheel. They cover everything from frugality and deals to real estate investing, so you’re sure to glean some tips from every episode.

The Money Nerds Podcast

Every week, personal finance coach Whitney Hansen interviews experts in the topics of career development, paying off debt, saving money and more. She also releases bonus episodes every Friday with five tips to help listeners with a variety of money topics.

Hansen is great at breaking down seemingly complex topics like credit scores, money mindset and investing. If you want to learn the basics of personal finance, “The Money Nerds Podcast” will be right up your alley.

Popcorn Finance

Chris Browning talks about personal finance topics in “about the time it takes to make a bag of popcorn,” as the “Popcorn Finance” slogan goes. Some episodes turn out to be three or four bags of popcorn, but you won’t care, because the content is so good and Browning’s voice is so soothing.

Seriously, he should rename this thing “Pot Roast Finance” and just talk to us for three hours every week.

Each episode is a conversation with a different guest on a unique personal finance topic. Some are classic interviews; others are fun debates or bonus content from past guests called “quick pops.” If you’ve got a short commute or get bored easily, “Popcorn Finance” is for you.

The Stacking Benjamins Show

If you’re still convinced that no podcast about money can hold your attention, you haven’t listened to “The Stacking Benjamins” yet.

Joe Saul-Sehy and his band of accomplices — most notably a guy identified only as OG and his mom’s neighbor Doug — release three hilarious episodes every week about timely money topics and new technology.

Every show is funny and will “accidentally” teach you about personal finance topics through interviews that introduce you to new financial apps. There’s even irrelevant trivia that you’ll wait for in every episode.

Marriage, Kids and Money

For families with young children, “Marriage, Kids and Money,” hosted by Andy Hill, is the show for you.

Hill does a mix of solo episodes and interviews about personal finance topics relating to married couples and parents. And if you’re tired of thinking about your marriage and kids, you can find some straight money subjects that everyone can learn from.

This podcast has topics you won’t find on many other shows, so browse the archives — even if you’re single and childless, especially if you don’t plan on staying that way forever.

Afford Anything

Each episode of the “Afford Anything” podcast will inspire you to think beyond what conventional wisdom tells you about personal finance.

Host Paula Pant talks to experts and industry stalwarts and gets them to open up a side of themselves you won’t hear on other podcasts. Her show is a great listen if you want to hear engaging conversations about money, how to spend it and how to optimize it.

The Side Hustle Show

If you’re looking for a side hustle, look no further. Nick Loper’s “The Side Hustle Show” has featured all of them — or at least most of them — in its over 300 episodes.

Every show is an interview with someone who’s started a successful side hustle about how they did it. Loper also answers questions about topics that help side hustlers grow and scale their businesses.

If you’re looking to make money outside of your full-time job, subscribe to his podcast right now.

Jen Smith is a staff writer at The Penny Hoarder and co-host of the Frugal Friends Podcast. She and her husband paid off $ 78,000 of debt in less than two years on two less-than-average salaries. She gives money-saving and debt-payoff tips on Instagram at @modernfrugality.

Making her London debut last year after several at New York Fashion Week, VB returned to the city to showcase her AW19 collection at the Tate Britain.

Models’ skin was prepped with massages by renowned facialist Nichola Joss before applying The Cream by Augustinus Bader. The result was a glowing, flawless complexion that, according to Joss, would set them up for a busy day of shows.

Make-up legend Pat McGrath and her team perfected the glow before models hit the catwalk, showcasing a collection of comfortable and chic tailored pieces that perfectly captured how the modern woman wants to look (and dress).

Victoria Beckham show

The show was broadcast live on giant screens in Piccadilly to mark the launch of VB’s new YouTube channel, which will be an insight into all things fashion, beauty, and even the Beckham family will make an appearance.

The channel comes as Victoria’s friend, Derek Blasberg, has recently been appointed YouTube’s fashion and beauty director.

‘When Derek approached me, I thought it would be a great opportunity to educate myself and really understand the platform,’ she told Vogue after the show. ‘The videos are going to be everything from fashion to beauty, and my family will be in there as well.

‘I think you’ll get the opportunity to see the real me: me at work, me with the kids and what it’s like being a working mum.’

2019 is going to be pretty mega for VB, who is also about to launch her own make-up line Victoria Beckham Beauty.

Watch this space for Victoria Beckham’s biggest year yet.

Gloria Allred Contacted Authorities About R Kelly Tape

CHICAGO (AP) — Attorney Gloria Allred tells The Associated Press she has contacted law enforcement about concerns one of her clients may be the person in a VHS tape recently given to Chicago prosecutors that purportedly shows R&B star R. Kelly having sex with an underage girl.

The Los Angeles-based lawyer said by phone Friday she has “made law enforcement in a different jurisdiction” than Chicago aware of her concerns. Allred represents multiple R. Kelly accusers, some of whom haven’t come forward publicly.

Allred says if her client is on the video, “we will do everything legally possible to protect her and her rights.”

Another attorney, Michael Avenatti, said Thursday he gave Chicago prosecutors the video.

Kelly has been dogged for years with allegations of sexual misconduct. Through his lawyers, he has consistently denied them. His current attorney, Steve Greenberg, told the AP Allred’s comments were “speculative.”

Frozen 2 trailer reignites fan frenzy with hints of new songs, messages about climate change and maybe Disney’s first gay princess

FANS of the £1billion Disney blockbuster Frozen are ready to Let It Go again.

In case you somehow missed the global frenzy the first time round in 2013, the musical tale of Snow Queen Elsa and her fearless sister Anna became one of the highest grossing animated movies ever.

Fans of Disney's Frozen are excited for the sequel after the release of the new trailer

This week saw the release of the first two-minute trailer for the sequel, which notched up more than 116million views in 24 hours.

Frozen 2 will not be out until November, yet social media is buzzing with speculation.

Kate Jackson takes a look at the frosty phenomenon and what to expect from the sequel . . .

The £1billion phenomenon

NOT since Star Wars has a movie dominated the toy market in the way Frozen has, with Elsa dolls out-selling Barbie.

Disney is estimated to have been shifting a billion dollars-worth of Frozen related products in both 2014 and 2015.

In the US there has been £430million worth of Frozen dolls sold
In the US there has been £430million worth of Frozen dolls sold

Elsa doll sales, like the soft toy below, were worth £430million in the US alone.

And the blue evening dress worn by Elsa as she sings power ballad Let It Go is Disney’s all-time best-selling costume — with Anna’s outfit in second place.

Children were named after the tormented ice queen, merchandise spun out of control and Let It Go was belted out in homes and playgrounds across the world.

In Britain, 1.45million DVDs were sold in the first three weeks after the film’s release in 2013 and the Frozen Snow Glow Elsa doll became the most popular Christmas toy.

The original movie cost £117million to make and Disney is estimated to have shifted over a billion dollars worth of merchandise

It didn’t stop there, a year later merchandise continued to increase tenfold, and was still going strong in 2016.

Fans could buy everything from Frozen chairs to ride-on toys cars, board games and backpacks.

And it was Elsa and Olaf, the naive snowman, who were shifting the goods, rather than the film’s heroine Anna.

On top of that, the icy tale proved to be the biggest-selling DVD of this decade, shifting more than three million copies in 2014 alone.

The original Disney movie cost £117million to make and went on to be the highest grossing animated film of all time, taking $ 1.287billion. It won two Oscars — Best Animated film and Best Original Song — plus a Golden Globe and a Bafta.

However, Spencer Lacey Ganus — who played teenage Elsa — earned just £600 for her one-day of work. She ended up with ten times that from royalties.

New viewers (if there are any) start here

INSPIRED by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, Frozen is a fairy tale for the modern era, with fierce princesses Elsa and Anna as the heroines.

In the original movie the kingdom of Arendelle is trapped in an eternal winter after princess Elsa’s incredible powers are unleashed following her coronation as Queen.

Frozen looks at the relationship between sisters Elsa and Anna, as well as the friends they meet along the way like snowman Olaf
Disney

Elsa flees, and her sister Anna, her new friend Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven and naive snowman Olaf set off to persuade her to end her self-imposed isolation and save her homeland.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Weselton schemes to take control of Arendelle by getting rid of both Elsa and Anna.

Elsa is able to conquer all – but only by letting go of her fear.

Where STAR they now?

KRISTEN Bell: Anna

Before voicing heroic princess Anna, Kristen, 38, had appeared in US comedies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Couples Retreat.

The mum of two, who is married to actor Dax Shepard, had dreamed of being in a Disney animation since she was four.

She said of the movie’s success: “When we were making it, there was a part of me thinking, ‘This is really, really special’.”

Idina Menzel: Elsa

As Frozen brought global fame, Glee actress Idina was dealing with a divorce.

The New Yorker, 47, was balancing the glamour with going to “mediation with my ex, figuring out which days he was visiting our son and the sadness and regret.”

When asked a couple of years ago if her son, now nine, was excited about Frozen 2, she admitted: “He doesn’t give a s***.”

Jonathan Groff: Kristoff

While voicing Kristoff the Broadway actor was also filming the American TV series Looking, in which he got to have raunchy scenes with History Boys actor Russell Tovey.

On stage in 2015 he played King George III in Hamilton, which earned him a Tony Award nomination.

Jonathan, who stars in Netflix crime drama Mindhunter, describes Frozen as “like crack for children”.

Josh Glad: Olaf

The voice of the world’s most famous snowman grew up in sunny Florida and didn’t see snow until he was 15.

Prior to Frozen, the 37-year-old played tech icon Steve Wozniak in the film Jobs and more recent movies include Murder On The Orient Express and Beauty And The Beast.

The dad of two said: “If I had to be remembered for one character, Olaf would be fine.”

The trailer clues

THE teaser has a dark, fearful tone, starting with Elsa running across a rampaging sea, which many fans have interpreted as her being trapped on a mystical island.

The girls are wearing new combat-style outfits and Anna is wielding a sword, which some have likened to a superhero movie.

Disney

Many fans think that the new film will have underlying messages about climate change after Elsa is seen trying to freeze an ocean[/caption]

And rather than winter, it seems to be autumn — although this may not be in their native Arendelle.

Writer and director Jennifer Lee said it will be “bigger, more epic” than Frozen, adding: “They’re going to go far out of Arendelle.”

While most fans have been poring over the trailer, they should be paying more attention to the poster.

Josh Gad, the voice of snowman Olaf, tweeted: “If you look hard enough, this teaser poster will reveal quite a few surprises (like how pretty a snowflake is up close).”

There is speculation that it is set in a different land as we can see an autumnal forest rather than the snowy scenes of Arendelle
There is speculation that it is set in a different land as we can see an autumnal forest rather than the snowy vistas of Arendelle

There has also been speculation that Frozen 2 could send a message about climate change.

In the trailer, Elsa is either trying to reduce the temperature of the sea as she crosses it or she may simply be freezing it so she is able to walk across it.

It could, though, simply be that this story takes place during a different season or that the characters are in a different land.

The other problem with the climate change theory is that Frozen is clearly set before the industrial revolution, so any rise in the Earth’s temperature is unlikely to have been made by humans.

The new songs

THERE were two versions of mega-hit song Let It Go in the original movie – the empowering one sung by Elsa as she refuses to hide her secret powers any more, and a pop version by Demi Lovato at the end credits.

The song Let It Go won a Grammy and an Oscar, and sold more than ten million copies in 2014, making it the year’s fifth best-selling song.

AP:Associated Press

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have promised at least seven new songs for Frozen 2[/caption]

Husband and wife team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have promised at least seven new songs.

Director Jennifer Lee reckons one could rival Let It Go’s success. She said in November: “We have a new song that I think is an evolution. It’s our own song. Bobby and Kristen just delivered it three weeks ago. We’ve been working with them for two years and this song just came and I love it.”

The snowflake

THERE is just one bold image on the new movie’s official poster – this snowflake-like formation with four diamonds.

Each diamond contains a different symbol inside it, and fans have speculated that they might stand for the four elements of earth, water, air and fire. Or perhaps, for the four seasons.

Others suspect the four diamonds might stand for four kingdoms, and that the snowflake’s eight points might hint at more princesses.

The new characters: could we have Disney’s first gay princess?

BLINK and you’ll miss them but two new characters are glimpsed in the Frozen 2 teaser — a redhead female and a blonde figure, who is blown upwards in a pile of leaves.

Some fans reckon they could be Anna and Kristoff’s children, even though the pair haven’t aged.

Some think that the film could break new ground and feature Disney’s first ever gay princess after many fans campaigned for Elsa to have a girlfriend

Could these be voiced by the new cast members, Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood and Black Panther actor Sterling K Brown?

Not even respected movie website IMDB knows what their characters names will be in Frozen 2 — yet.

An alternative theory is the sequel will glow under the LGBT rainbow.

Some eagle-eyed viewers spotted a scene with an unknown character being blown upwards in a pile of leaves

There is a twitter campaign titled #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, where lesbian fans have pleaded with the writer to have the heroine fall in love with a woman.

Idina Menzel, who plays Elsa, gave the idea her support, saying: “It would be a great thing.”

Writer Jennifer Lee was also very aware of the drive and said: “We have tons of conversations about it and we’re really conscientious about these things.”

New Horizons beams back a new revelation about Ultima Thule

ultima thule shape

When NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft zoomed by the twin space rocks known collectively as Ultima Thule earlier this year, the images it sent back seemed to show a “space snowman” in all its glory. The photos showed two round lumps of rock attached by a thick “belt” in a shape known as a contact binary.

Photos don’t lie but they can’t be a bit misleading, even in space. Now, astronomers have been thrown for a loop when New Horizons’ final series of images of Ultima Thule reveal that the twin rocks aren’t actually round. Yep, Ultima Thule is more of a space pancake than a snowman.

New job listing suggests Google may be thinking about building its own smartwatch

Google wearables VP

Google is apparently about to ramp up its wearable device business in a major way. That would seem to be the case thanks to a few clues, the most recent of which is a new job listing spotted by Android Police that shows the company is looking for a “Vice President, Hardware Engineering, Wearables” for the Google Hardware team.

According to the job description, this executive will “work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership team for Google Hardware and will be responsible for the design, development, and shipment of all Google’s Wearable products.” When you couple this new position — as well as the $ 40 million Google just paid Fossil for secret, unfinished smartwatch tech, which the image at the top of this post is a reference to — you can start to see how it adds up to something important about the direction of Google’s wearable efforts.

What I’ve learned about sex after 10 years of marriage

What I’ve learned about sex after 10 years of marriage

What I’ve learned about sex after 10 years of marriage

It’s no secret that I never intended to get married. I never even dreamed about my wedding day as a young girl. Yet, when I met my husband in my junior year of high school, our meeting was shortly followed by the realization, “Crap, I’m probably going to marry this guy.”

Though he was totally different than me, my not-yet-husband complemented me completely. Suddenly, the idea of marriage—or any long-term relationship—didn’t seem so bad. When we eventually did get married, I didn’t find it stifling to be with him. Instead, I was made better by being around him, and it felt like I did the same for him. Though I still know that marriage isn’t for everyone, in a lot of ways, being married has made me a gentler, happier, and wiser person.

One of the topics it has made me more knowledgeable about is sex. Specifically, there are a few truths that I’ve learned after 10 years of marriage. Some of these came to me as epiphanies while others were learned over years of discovering who I am and who my husband is, inside and outside of our sex lives. Embracing these lessons has helped me to grow and thoroughly enjoy my married sex life.

1. Great sex takes time.

I didn’t have my first orgasm until five years into my relationship—shortly after getting married and while pregnant for the first time. Though my husband and I started having sex months into dating, we didn’t really know what we were doing. Neither of us embraced the self-discovery part of our teenage years. All we really knew about sex was the basics, and that we should always pee afterwards. (Shout out to our high school biology teacher for this bit of wisdom that’s kept me UTI-free for 15 years.)

Basically, it took time for us to figure out what we liked and didn’t like. It took time to develop a sexual relationship that was more than just okay. It wasn’t until we allowed ourselves to become more sexually adventurous that our sex life really clicked.

We often hear that, after several years of marriage, people become bored with their sex lives. I’ve discovered the opposite. After being married for 10 years and with my husband for a total of 15, I’m more interested in our sex lives than ever. Which ties into the second lesson I’ve learned.

2. Asking for what you like can save so much stress

You might assume that, if you know what you want, you’re going to ask for it. However, there are plenty of us who have a problem with this concept. In fact, it’s such a common problem that the National Coalition for Sexual Health provides scripts on its website to help lovers speak to each other about wants and needs in the bedroom. Called the Five Action Steps to Good Sexual Health, these tools offer couples the ability to communicate about topics they would otherwise avoid.

Learning my preferences wasn’t as hard as asking for what I wanted. Asking felt like putting myself out there. It made me feel even more vulnerable than I felt when I had sex for the first time. Focusing the attention on myself instead of just hoping for a good shared experience felt shameful. Women often feel the need to follow the lead of their partners, and I did the same. But instead of putting the expectations on my husband to read my mind—which I was definitely guilty of doing at the beginning of our relationship—I had to accept responsibility for my own satisfaction.

However, it’s important to remember that sexual communication is a learned skill, not an inherent talent. While I was able to talk to my husband about birth control, sexual expectations, and my dislikes, it was a lot harder for me to actively ask for what I wanted. I had to work up to that, but it helped knowing that I’m more of a verbal communicator while my husband is more physical. I began giving my husband short and direct feedback in the moment of having sex, and it made me feel in control during an unguarded, vulnerable learning time. Then I began showing him what I wanted while telling him what I wanted, which helped my husband learn.

Being vulnerable was scary but it was essential to our sexy life. I know that allowing myself to be vulnerable in the bedroom has also made it easier to open up in other parts of our relationship.

3. Most media does married sex a disservice.

TV and movies don’t usually paint sex for married heterosexual couples in a positive light—and they’re wrong for this. We’re taught a few toxic lessons under what is usually the guise of comedy. For example, the trope of the frigid, no-nonsense wife who withholds sex to punish her husband is a tired favorite of sitcom writers. It teaches us that sex can and should be weaponized in a monogamous relationship. While no one is guaranteed or entitled to sex, withholding affection as a form of punishment isn’t funny. Teaching people that it’s a normal part of married life is irresponsible.

This common depiction of heterosexual sex in marriage also insinuates that sex is not as important to women as it is to men. While sex is portrayed as a regular human reaction and a regular human need for husband characters, the wives are coded as cold and inhuman. It paints these women as the antagonists in their marriages, a dangerous mentality to enforce.

In my experience, after 10 years of marriage, sex is as important to me as it is to my husband. Yes, his libido is higher than mine—always has been—but withholding sex as a punishment would hurt us both emotionally and physically. Besides setting a toxic tone of monetizing affection, it would condition my husband to think that sex isn’t important to me. And, if it isn’t important to me, why should my sexual satisfaction be important to him?

4. Children change sex—but not in the way you think.

Another trope that is super common to hear about longstanding relationships is that having kids changes your sex life. More to the point, it’s often inferred that they ruin it. I can’t speak for every mom, but having kids has definitely changed my sex life—though not in the ways I thought they would.

With three kids—currently aged 6-10—I have a lot on my plate. Earlier in their lives, I had help from my parents, but there was always a strict “no overnight babysitting” rule put in place. On top of that, we’ve always co-slept, with our youngest still bunking with us more often than not. Sleep deprivation has definitely been a factor in our lives for the last 10 years, but we couldn’t let sleepless nights and kiddos in our bed impact our sexual happiness.

Instead, we had to get creative. Knowing that sex isn’t always an option for us during the night in our bed, we learned to take advantage of any time and place we could steal some intimacy throughout he day. Not having a lot of time also encouraged us to learn what personally creates the quickest and most satisfying sex for us. When you’ve only got 10 minutes before a kid comes barging into the room or a few moments between dinner and bedtime, knowing what works best saves precious time.

5. Sex and other love languages are vital.

Learning how someone shows their love for you will help you to pick up on important emotional queues. For my relationship in particular, sex is a major love language. My husband isn’t someone who is very vocal with his thoughts and feelings. Someone who rarely deals in absolutes, my husband doesn’t feel comfortable expressing himself with words that can be easily misconstrued. For that reason, sexual contact is a clear way to understand how he’s feeling without my own emotions clouding his.

At first, I didn’t understand this. Though I was glad he always seemed so sexually interested in me, I also felt reduced to a mere sexual being. The same way he expressed his love for me through touch and physical love, I expressed mine through verbal communication and non-sexual contact. Eventually, we allowed ourselves to talk about this. We discussed how I need to be valued on more than a sexual level and how he feels most understood while showing instead of telling.

I’m glad to say that this understanding merged into a new love language for us as a couple. We take baths together a few times every week, which lets us recharge our relationship on an emotional and physical level. When the kids have gone to sleep, we slip into our garden tub where we download with each other while enjoying the intimacy of a relaxing bath. He shaves my legs; I tell him about the day’s news. He washes my hair; I suggest weekend plans. During a time in our relationship where communication and privacy are often hard to find, our love languages evolved to find a way.

My husband and I still argue sometimes. I can still be overly aggressive when I’m disappointed and he’s still passive aggressive when he feels talked down to. We have disagreements about his mother, my sister, our children…but our sex life hasn’t ever been a focus of a fight. What I’ve learned most after 10 years of marriage is that any relationship built on passion and strengthened through communication, mutual respect, and a little creativity will be a happy one.

Tony Cornelius Opens Up About His Father’s Suicide and Keeping the ‘Soul Train’ Legacy Alive

Love, peace, and soul

“I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace, and soul!”

That was the signature line that Donald “Don” Cornelius recited when closing out Soul Train, a groundbreaking weekly broadcast that revolutionized television. For black folks in the ’70s, “love, peace, and soul” became a mantra that personified their hopes and dreams for true freedom, while the iconic musical showcase introduced a mainstream audience to the rhythm, creativity, and talent within the African American community. It also served as a vehicle for economic empowerment for Cornelius, the show’s creator, executive producer, and original host.

After serving in the U.S. Marines, working a variety of odd jobs, and getting a gig as a local radio host in Chicago, Cornelius launched Soul Train in Chicago in 1970. By 1971, the show moved to Los Angeles and became a nationally syndicated sensation that ran up until 2006. In addition to highlighting famed African American singers and local teenage dancers, Soul Train became a brand that spawned Soul Train Records in 1975, The Soul Train Music Awards, and the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.

Tragically, Cornelius committed suicide in 2012 at the age of 75. Now, his son, Anthony “Tony” Cornelius, is helping to shed light on his father’s journey in creating one of the longest-running shows in TV history through a new series called American Soul. The 10-episode series, which premieres on BET Feb. 5, offers viewers who grew up watching Soul Train a captivating dose of nostalgia while introducing a new generation to a program that changed the course of black history.

Don’s Soul

“Little known fact: my father always wanted to do a Soul Train movie,” said Anthony, who serves as one of the executive producers on the series, to BLACK ENTERPRISE.

According to the show’s description, American Soul unfolds the trials and tribulations that his father encountered while creating Soul Train “against the backdrop of an unforgiving Hollywood in the 1970s.” It also chronicles the “rise and fall” that he took in his personal life.

The series opens with a chilling scene of Cornelius’ last moments on earth on Feb. 1, 2012. That day changed Anthony’s life and outlook on mental illness. “I always thought suicide was for people who could not handle life—never even imagining that one day I would actually be talking about it…and experience someone in my family who committed suicide.”

The tragedy and a subsequent conversation he had with Stevie Wonder moved him to launch The Don Cornelius Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization that works to identify and support programs that provide awareness, prevention, and support for those contemplating suicide along with support to those who have lost loved ones from suicide. “I spoke to him days after my father’s death and he gave me some inspiration to stand up and talk about it,” he recalled of his conversation with the legendary singer.

Anthony was also appointed last year to sit on the board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, where he advocates for mental health. According to the American Psychiatric Association, only one-third of black Americans who need mental healthcare receive it, while lack of culturally competent counseling deters many from seeking care.

“Many times, a lot of black men don’t have anywhere to turn. We struggle with our feelings,” said Anthony. “A lot of black folks go to the church for their soothing of their mental capacity, which is fine, but many times it gets even more complicated,” he added. “There are professionals out there who can diagnose the problem. It’s about education.”

American Soul gives viewers a look at some of the warning signs of someone in mental distress by presenting a different side of Cornelius and the empire he built.

“My father’s legacy will continue to live on—it’s living right now,” he said.

Grammy-nominated R&B singer Kelly Price says starring in American Soul is a full circle moment for her. After releasing her debut album in 1998, she made her television debut on Soul Train. At the time, her hit single “Friend of Mine” had charted as No. 1 on the U.S. R&B chart, however, her label was apprehensive to reveal her appearance due to her weight and dark complexion. “I had a No. 1 record in the country and nobody had seen what I looked like,” Price told BE. “The first time everybody got a chance to see me was on Soul Train on a Saturday morning,” she says. “Don Cornelius was the first person to present me to the world on a national stage.”

Price also received her first award as a singer and songwriter at the 1999 Soul Train Music Awards. “Now, the first time that people will actually see me take on a chunky acting role will be a part of the telling of the Don Cornelius story.”

Sinqua Walls, who portrays Cornelius in American Soul, says he is carrying the Soul Train legacy “with a tremendous amount of pride.” He recognizes Cornelius as more than just an iconic TV host, but also as an entrepreneur and a visionary. “We always say, when you have a dream, follow it and don’t let anyone detract from it. And Don is a testament to that. Not only did he do it as a man creating a TV show, but he did it as a black man in 1970s trying to pitch a show that no one had ever done before to an audience that didn’t always want to see him. And he stayed steadfast in his dreams.”

American Soul kicks off on Tuesday, February 5 at 9 p.m. ET on BET.

‘I Thought It Was Fine.’ The Woman Behind the ‘I Made Queso’ Meme Breaks Her Silence About the Dip That Upset Everyone

Press secretaries are used to taking the heat, but it’s usually not about their cooking. So on Super Bowl 2019, George W. Bush’s former press secretary got a taste of a something a little different. Dana Perino was watching the New England Patriots’ lackluster battle against the Los Angeles Rams when she decided to share a photo of the bubbly queso she had made for the festivities.

“I made queso,” Perino, now a Fox News anchor, captioned her creation. A nice enough thing to do for a Super Bowl 53 party. But her detractors did not see it that way, and the “I made queso” meme was born.

Everyone seemed to agree: a good queso, this was not. The aesthetically unappetizing dish quickly inspired a ferocious meme offensive, the most prominent among them a macabre take from comedian Patton Oswalt.

It was the kind of moment that got thousands talking, pulling focus from the broadcast that millions were watching, but Perino didn’t even realize just how far her dip had spread until later.

“My dentist texted to say it was the best part of the Super Bowl,” she told TIME on Monday. “People were getting a good laugh about it all, but I didn’t realize the scope of it until the mid-day.

Perino, who now splits her time between anchoring FOX News’ The Daily Briefing and co-hosting The Five, admits that cooking is not her area of expertise.

The cheese dip may have looked awful to her harshest food critics online, but Perino insists it was a crowd pleaser.

“Well, I’m not much of a foodie, so I thought it was fine. Good with chips. My friend Russ Lucas ate three bowls of it.” She added that her girlfriends even said “it was quite good.”

As for Perino’s future contributions to parties? She may be retiring the pot.

“I think I’ll be asked only to bring wine to dinners in the future. And I will be happy to do that,” she said.

William’s Early Doubts About Meghan Markle Reported to Be Behind Royal Feud

Stephen Pond

The royal falling out between Meghan and Harry on one side and William and Kate on the other has its roots in an overly frank exchange of brotherly views, according to royal biographer and Vanity Fair columnist Katie Nicholl.

“William was quite concerned that the relationship had moved so quickly,” Nicholl says in a promo clip for TLC’s Kate v. Meghan: Princesses at War?, which will air at 10 p.m. ET Tuesday, “And being close to Harry, probably the only person close enough, [William said], ‘This seems to be moving quickly, are you sure?’”

Nicholl adds: “I think what was meant as well-intended brotherly advice just riled Harry. Harry is hugely protective of Meghan. He saw that as criticism. He interpreted that as his brother not really being behind this marriage, this union, and I don’t think things have been quite right ever since.”

DeVon Franklin On ‘The Truth About Men,’ Working With Steph Curry and More

In a time when toxic masculinity is at the center of national dialogue, award-winning film producer and New York Times best-selling author DeVon Franklin is shifting the conversation toward finding solutions through his new book, The Truth About Men: What Men and Women Need to Know. The book, which will be released Feb. 5, takes a raw and compelling look at the struggles men wrestle with and offers a manual on how to change, love, resist temptation, and practice self-control.

The Truth About Men

Franklin says his book was inspired by a revelation he had as a teenager when he discovered that his father had cheated on his mother. “That really devastated me [and] rocked me to my core,” he told BLACK ENTERPRISE. “If my father cheated on my mother, then what does that say about me?… Does that mean the apple falls far from the tree or does it not?”

Franklin added that women in his family told him that 99% of all men cheat, which made him wonder why it was so hard for men to be faithful. “I wanted to write a book because there is so much going on in the world about men and men’s behavior,” said the motivational speaker. “I wanted to write a book about the solution.”

Franklin, who has been married to actress Meagan Good for nearly seven years, went on to admit that he, too, faces challenges. “My wife’s amazing. I love my wife, but that doesn’t mean that I have no struggles.” He continued, “The Truth About Men is identifying where we struggle as men and what can be done about it, and also giving women information along the way.” Ultimately, he says, the book is a call for men “to do better.”

Breakthrough

In addition to his new book, Franklin is gearing up for the April 2019 release of his new film, Breakthrough, which is based on a true story about a 14-year-old boy who died in a freak accident but was then resurrected back to life by his mother’s prayers. Franklin said it only took him 24 hours to convince NBA champ, Steph Curry, to sign onto the project as an executive producer. “It’s the first film that he has put his name on and that he has helped bring to the world,” he said. “It’s a blessing.”

The film will be produced by his company Franklin Entertainment, a multimedia company that produces inspirational and commercial content. The company currently has a first-look film deal with 20th Century Fox.

Before launching his own production company, Franklin served as the former senior vice president of Columbia Pictures. During his nearly 10-year tenure at Columbia, he produced box-office hits like The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid.

Diversity in Hollywood

As one of the few African American executive producers in Hollywood, Franklin spoke candidly about the lack of diversity in his industry. “The progress in Hollywood around diversity, specifically related to executives, is abysmal,” he told BE. However, he is trying to combat the issue as a newly elected member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), where he chairs the executive branch subcommittee on diversity.

“It is a systemic problem and Hollywood has yet to put a successful solution around it and I am committed to being a part of that solution because we need it.”

The Key To Success

The Seventh Day Adventist preacher credits his career success to the discipline he practices in his life. “I believe no discipline, no destiny,” he said. “Too often, when we want something, but we’re not willing to discipline ourselves to get it, we actually never achieve it.” He continued, “part of discipline is not just delaying gratification, it’s also about sacrifice.”

He added, “Discipline is critical, it’s necessary, and it’s difficult. That’s why very few do it because it requires going without…However, “in the long run, discipline will yield tremendous, powerful results.”

Cardi B Had ‘Mixed Feelings’ About Not Performing At The Superbowl

When Cardi B was asked to perform at the halftime show for this year’s Superbowl, she declined because she wanted to support ex-NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who hasn’t played in the league since he began protesting against racial injustices against minorities by kneeling during the national anthem. The decision wasn’t an easy one to make and she said she had mixed feelings about turning down the offer.

“My husband, he loves football. His kids play football. It’s really hard for him… He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can’t go to the Super Bowl, because he’s got to stand for something,” the former Love & Hip Hop star told the Associated Press.

The “Money” rapper also said she sacrificed a lot of money by deciding not perform.

“You have to sacrifice that,” she said. “I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”

The Bronx spitter said she hopes that this protest will help spark a change and bring light to the injustices that Kaepernick was spotlighting but she is doubtful.

“We got an arrogant president, and the racism right now has been reborn,” she said. “They feel mighty brave nowadays. When Obama was around, I just feel like they were praying on the day when his eight years was over. A lot of jealousy. When they see (how) the choices they made due to racism has affected the country, that’s when things are going to start changing. Right now, they don’t want to accept that their decision has affected the country.”

Stephen Colbert Mocks Trump’s Pre-Super Bowl Comments About Barron and Football

CBS

A special post-Super Bowl episode of The Late Show likely meant an unusually large viewership for Stephen Colbert Sunday night. But that didn’t mean the host was about to pull any of his usual punches against President Donald Trump.

Following an awkward cameo from Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi in the cold open, Colbert came out swinging in a monologue that took on the president’s pre-game interview with Face the Nation’s Margaret Brennan. He joked that the tradition “goes back to the very first Super Bowl, when Lyndon Johnson made the surprise announcement that he was sending both teams to Vietnam.”

During his CBS sit-down Trump said that he would have a “hard time” letting his son Barron play football. “He likes soccer,” the president said of his youngest. “A lot of people, including me, thought soccer would probably never make it in this country, but it really is moving forward rapidly.”

Kamala Harris Bio: 3 Things You May Not Know About the Presidential Candidiate

After years of demurely dodging the “Will you run for president” question, Kamala Harris officially declared yes in Oakland, almost two weeks after the release of her memoir, The Truths We Hold (Penguin Random House; $ 30) and left little doubt that her campaign for president had begun.

Harris’s  meticulously planned Oaktown hometown announcement could have felt anticlimactic. To the contrary, it was breathtaking.

The weather was perfect after weeks of rain (an Oakland rarity). The bright sun on Harris’s smile, the swell of the crowds chanting her name and waving her “Kamala for the People” signs, her ease in their presence and in front of the camera, gave it the feel of a great victory speech at the end of a long race.

But this was just the beginning, and the next 22 months will be long and hard. She said it herself, invoking Robert Kennedy. “I do not lightly dismiss the dangers and difficulties of challenging an incumbent president, but these are not ordinary times, and this will not be an ordinary election.

If there was any doubt that Harris is no ordinary candidate, she stamped it out with real swagger when, for a brief moment, in a state where cannibas is legally flourishing, Harris gave her longtime support base a natural high.

For those who knew her less well, there were a few surprises that will no doubt shape how she and her historic run for the highest office in the land are viewed – and they had more to do with the personal forces that have shaped her than with the critical issues she will shape should she become president.

Kamala Harris Bio Facts

Yes, she’s married. Yes, he’s white.

Douglas Emhoff, 54, is a Los Angeles lawyer and native New Yorker who Harris married five years ago. It’s her first marriage; his second. Harris writes in her memoir that his grown children, Cole and Ella, are named for John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald and that she bonded with them over a shared love of music right away.

‘Ya mon,’ she’s half Jamaican.

No longer politically correct to simply reduce everyone to black or white, Harris is now most often referred to in the press as black and South Asian-American. A lesser known fact, which she addressed herself yesterday, is that her father, economist Donald Harris, was born and raised in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. At about 1% of the population, courting the West Indian-American vote: Smart move.

Yes, sir, that’s her sister chairing the campaign.

Maya Harris, Kamala’s younger sister, is chairing her presidential campaign. A Stanford educated lawyer whose resume includes the Ford Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and most recently, MSNBC as a political analyst, this will not be her first rodeo. She was a senior adviser for Hilary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
