Don Lemon Says He’s All About Taking Care Of His Health These Days – Here’s Why

According to Page Six, Don Lemon is all about his health, in fact, he refuses to eat junk food almost entirely. The CNN anchor recently said to the outlet that he’s more concerned with nutrition and health now that he’s slowly getting older.

Lemon said to reporters from Page Six that he is a “man of a certain age now,” and has to make particular changes to his diet, otherwise, he won’t fare well for the future. “I would have to cut out the fried food,” the CNN anchor remarked.

With that said, however, he still is a “Southern guy” in his soul so he has to eat all of the good southern foods like fried chicken, gumbo, crawfish bisque, crab cakes, hush puppies, french fries, and catfish.

Followers have come to know Don Lemon, especially in the Trump era, for his controversial comments regarding the president, whom he believes to be one of the worst and most damaging politicians in recent memory.

DePaul University professor, Jeffrey McCall, said to reporters from Fox News that Don isn’t a traditional anchor, in the original meaning of the term. The professor explained that Don is at the forefront of a TV show in which his opinions are at the primary focus of the program’s content.

Reported first by Fox News, the outlet explained his break into broadcasting, including his career start as a reporter who dished on breaking news and major stories. Over time, however, his opinions came to be more respected by the left-wing establishment, especially since Trump’s election in 2016.

The academic said to Fox News that Don Lemon’s reporting style was emblematic of the way in which CNN has focused primarily on spouting opinions, rather than fact-based news reports. Whether that be true or not, now that Don is in his 50s, his career is at its peak, and his on-air persona is appreciated by his base over.

If he intends to continue giving his opinion at the network, he needs to cut out all of the fried food, and focus more on foods that serve longevity, rather than just his taste.

Much More Than a Blow-Dry: Women Reveal How They Really Feel About Their Hair

Courtesy Rohina Hoffman

Neurologist-turned-photographer Rohina Hoffman knows the power of a hairdo.

At 7, her hair was chopped to a short “boy’s haircut,” and she was devastated. “The trauma of losing control of my identity has stayed with me my entire life,” Hoffman writes in the introduction to her book, Hair Stories.

In photographing and interviewing dozens of women about their own experiences with their hair, Hoffman discovered the seemingly endless roles hair plays—as a cloak of comfort, a statement of creativity, a link to faith, or a badge of honor.

And we get it.

Being a royal has its perks – the fashion, the princes, the tiaras, the castles – but it definitely also has its drawbacks, from the end of privacy to the dreaded rumour mill.

No one knows this more than Meghan Markle, who has endured an endless stream of online bullying since becoming a Duchess – everything from a supposed feud with Kate Middleton to racist abuse via social media.

REX

She in particular has faced a lot of rumours around her character, from claims that the palace staff have employed nasty nicknames for her like ‘Me-Gain’ to slander from her extended Markle family, with the rumours said to have angered Prince Harry.

This week, a sneak peek of a Meghan and Harry CBS special came out, seeing Gayle King speaking to Meghan’s friends about the Duchess of Sussex.

The clips in question show Meghan’s make up artist and friend, Daniel Martin, opening up about the rumours, tearing up as he talked about them.

‘What’s so frustrating is that you hear these stories and there’s no truth to them,’ Daniel explained in the clip. ’It’s not the same person. In the years I’ve known her, the years I’ve worked with her, she’s never had a diva fit, never.’

Meghan and Harry Plus One will air on Friday on CBS at 8 pm ET.

What You Need To Know About Leukemia

WHAT EXACTLY IS LEUKEMIA?
Leukemia is cancer of the blood.  Blood has a number of cells in it.  Among them are white cells that fight infection, red cells that carry oxygen and platelets that cause blot to clot and cause wounds to stop bleeding.  Cancer is when a group of cells grow uncontrollably and symptoms are due to too many of those cancerous cells crowding out good cells and preventing their function.

WHAT ARE THE EARLY SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF LEUKEMIA?
Signs of leukemia commonly include fatigue, frequent infections, bleeding or bruising, and lymphadenopathy which is a swelling of lymph glands in the neck, armpit, groin or elsewhere.

HOW IS LEUKEMIA DIAGNOSED?
The physician will first use a microscope to look at a blood smear which is blood drawn from a vein put on a glass slide.  Many patients will need a bone marrow biopsy.  This involves a small hole being placed into skin in the lower back/buttocks and a needle being inserted into the bone to withdraw bone marrow from the pelvic bone.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEUKEMIA?
There are a number of types of leukemia. We most commonly divide them into acute (fast-growing) or chronic (slow-growing). There are other subdivisions of these two types. A number of laboratory tests are done to determine the specific type of leukemia a patient has. The type determines the treatment and the prognosis.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF LEUKEMIA?
Most leukemias occur for unknown reasons. Most patients who get leukemia are in their 60’s and beyond at diagnosis. There is a cluster of children with leukemia. A small number of families have a genetic risk.

DO WE KNOW WHAT CAUSES IT? IS IT HEREDITARY/GENETIC?
Leukemia occurs when one or more of the genes in a white cell that instruct the cell to stop dividing is damaged and can no longer function. We call that damage a genetic mutation. These mutations are inherited in a small proportion of leukemia patients. These patients are usually children. Most adults acquire these mutations due to some biologic exposure (see below) or the mutation can occur simply by chance.

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?
The treatments vary by type of leukemia.

Some are treated with traditional chemotherapy, often for several years.

Others are treated with newer molecularly targeted drugs that exploit a genetic weakness that causes the cancer.

Imatinib also known as Gleevec is a molecularly targeted drug used in the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).  Most people with CML do very well and have a normal life expectancy. That was not true 20 years ago.

Some leukemias are treated with immunotherapy.

We infuse manmade antibodies to attack a number of cancers. The leukemia must have a molecular target specific to the antibody in order to be effective.

CAR T cell therapy involves taking a type of white cell called T cells out of the patient, manipulating them to put a CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) on the T cells and re-infusing them. The T cells find the cancer and if successful destroy it.  This therapy has received a lot of press because its cost is $ 500K

Some are treated with high dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant.  The patient gets very high doses of chemotherapy that destroys their bone marrow (the bone marrow makes blood). The bone marrow is replaced with bone marrow obtained from a relative or person that is a close match.

WHAT ARE SOME FACTORS THAT DEFINITELY DO AFFECT CANCER RISK?
Tobacco use is linked to a type of leukemia (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia) and can complicate treatment of other leukemias. Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation can cause leukemia, as can some chemical exposures. Scientists are concerned that exposure to certain petroleum products, pesticides, herbicides and organic chemicals are carcinogenic.

ARE THERE PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO HELP WITH CANCER RELATED EXPENSES?
Some charities will help advocate for the patient to get health insurances to pay for therapy. One, that I know has helped patients is The Patient Advocate Foundation (www.patientadvocate.org). In some circumstances they can also help with co-pay relief.

ARE RESEARCHERS CLOSER TO FINDING A CURE FOR LEUKEMIA??
Some leukemias are curable, most that are not curable are treatable.  Many that are that curable can be treated for a long time with the patient having a reasonable quality of life.  Treatments are improving. Indeed there were 18 new therapies approved by the FDA in 2018 alone.

HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED?

The Leukemia and Lymphoma society (www.LLS.org) is the largest private funder of blood cancer research.  They also provide support for patients, survivors, and families affected by leukemia.

The American Cancer Society funds leukemia research and provides patient support (www.Cancer.org). The ACS also has grassroots advocacy through its arm known as American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network   (www.FightCancer.org)

Five common myths about cervical screening busted by an OBGYN

Because attending your smear test is seriously important, and nothing to worry about

cervical screening

Getting your cervical screening might not feel like a walk in the park, but it’s nowhere near the ordeal that you may be freaking out about.

But smear tests are SO important and it’s absolutely essential that you know your stuff and – most importantly – attend your appointment.

The number of women going to their cervical smear test is at a 20 year low, with 25% of women not attending their appointment. However, Treatwell noticed that bookings for intimate waxes was up by 84% year on year.

This year they’ve launched the ‘Life Saving Wax’ campaign in partnership with Public Health England, an initiative encouraging beauty therapists to open up the conversation around smear tests and ultimately get more women to attend their appointment.

With this in mind, we turned Dr Christine Ekechi, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, to clear the fog and break down the most popular myths about cervical screening. Here’s what you need to know…

Myth 1: Cervical screening detects the presence of cancer

A smear test doesn’t actually test for cervical cancer, but pre-cancerous cells known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). ‘I frequently get asked by women whether cervical screening detects the presence of cancer so, if you are one of these people, then I assure you that you are not alone, says Dr Christine. ‘As a matter of fact, it appears that many women of all ages are confused as to the purpose of cervical screening, which in some cases may lead them to delay or not attend. But this needn’t be the case.

‘Cervical screening is a test to check the health of the cells of the cervix, which involves taking a small sample of cells from just within the cervix to do so. Most women’s test results show that everything is normal, but for around 1 in 20 women, the test shows some abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. Most of these changes won’t lead to cervical cancer and the cells may go back to normal on their own. But in some cases, the abnormal cells need to be removed so they can’t become cancerous.

‘In this way, regular screening, which only takes a few minutes, can help stop cervical cancer before it starts, as the test identifies potentially harmful cells before they become cancerous and ensures women get the right treatment as soon as possible. In a similar way, some women believe a cervical screen is the correct test for abnormal vaginal bleeding to rule out the presence of cancer. A cervical screen is unhelpful in this situation and any abnormal bleeding must be investigated by a doctor.’

Hello everyone! I’ve finally decided to listen to the calls of friends, family and patients to create a space on IG for health and well-being information for black and ethnic minority women (BAME) 😁 ………………………………………………… Who am I? I am a London based Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and a women’s health advocate. My job involves helping women manage their health concerns from young adulthood through pregnancy and the amazing years beyond that! ………………………………………………… Why am I doing this? The health statistics for BAME women are still appalling. Working with government, charities and other organisations I want to address this issue. What better way than direct education and discussion here? I am a black woman. I am a doctor. I am a patient. What affects you affects me so let’s rewrite the narrative. Let’s own our narrative. All are welcome to follow including our men! So let’s get started…..

A post shared by Dr Christine Ekechi (@dr_christine_ekechi) on

Myth 2: Smear tests are always extremely painful

One of the main reasons women cite for not attending their smear is that they’re too scared that it will be painful. ‘Everyone’s experience of cervical screening is different, some women find it painful, some find it uncomfortable and some may just experience a small scratch,’ the doctor explains.

‘However, it is important to remember that the nurses are trained to work with their patients and put them at ease and the test should only take 5 minutes. There are also many things that you can do to put yourself at ease or make the experience more comfortable, which many people are unaware of. For instance:

  • Talk to your nurse during the test and remember you are in control and can stop the test whenever you want to
  • Ask for a smaller speculum
  • Ask to lie in a different position
  • Take someone you trust to the appointment like a friend or family member
  • Ask your nurse about breathing exercises, as these can help
  • Take in music or a podcast to distract you.’

Myth 3: If you’ve had the HPV vaccine, you don’t need to go for your smear test

‘This is another common myth I get asked frequently. Although the HPV vaccine protects against 7 out of 10 (70%) cases of cervical cancer, a woman may still contract a type of high-risk HPV which the vaccine does not protect against. Therefore it is still important to attend routine screening when invited as this will help to detect early whether one of the other high-risk HPV infections have been contracted or whether there are any changes to cells (abnormalities).’

Myth 4: Only heterosexual, sexually active women need cervical screening

‘This is most definitely not true. Everyone with a cervix should take up their cervical screening invitation, regardless of their sexual orientation or what gender they define themselves as. Most changes to the cells of the cervix (abnormalities) are caused by persistent infection with HPV. As HPV can be passed on through skin-to-skin contact in the genital area, sexually active lesbian and bisexual people are still at risk. This is also true for transgender women who still have a cervix, and women.

‘Sadly, due to the lack of awareness around this, the uptake rates of cervical screening is significantly lower for lesbian, bisexual women and trans women, as they may believe that they don’t need screening because they don’t have sex with men. But, as mentioned earlier, HPV can be passed on through simple skin-to-skin contact in the genital area.’

Myth 5: An abnormal smear = you have cancer

Many women understandably worry about the results of their test, but one crucial thing to always bear in mind is that having an ‘abnormal’ smear does not mean you have cancer. Cervical screening isn’t a test for cancer, instead it can stop cancer before it starts by checking the health of your cervix and identifying any abnormal cells that could develop into cancer in the future.

Dr Christine Ekechi is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at NHS Imperial College Healthcare, specialising in early pregnancy and acute gynaecology. You can follow her on Instagram at @dr_christine_ekechi

Everything there is to know about volunteering overseas

Some people don’t just want to travel the world, they really want to immerse themselves in foreign cultures. One of the best ways to do that is through volunteering overseas as you get to help people out, make a bunch of friends, and live in another country. Here’s everything you need to know about volunteering overseas.

Start with a plan

Hoping to share some love around isn’t enough when you go volunteering, you need to put things in place to get the best out of it. You want to feel good for volunteering abroad but if the work you’re doing isn’t going to help the community should you do it?

It’s important to research all volunteering organizations in the countries you’re planning on living in. Make sure the company is actually going to do some good and aren’t just going to use your free labor to make themselves richer.

Voluntourism

It isn’t cheap

Volunteering overseas can actually end up costing you a lot of money. Even though you’re there for the good of the communities you’re trying to help, you can’t expect a free ride. All volunteering groups will hope for some money from you, so make sure to research where your money goes and what they do with the funds they raise. It might not be something you can afford to do on your own, so you could always try some fundraising techniques to get you there.

Volunteering overseas is addictive

Once you go on your first overseas volunteering trip, you’ll find that you want to do another as soon as possible. It’s very similar to getting bitten by the traveling bug, and you’ll be itching to go somewhere else to help out other communities.

A large part of volunteering is the friends you make and experiences you have. They are moments in your life that will stay with you forever, but one trip likely won’t be enough. Be prepared to dedicate a large part of your life to helping people out!

Some places need your help more

It’s great to help out in popular hotspots like Costa Rica, but there are countries that are less glamorous that potentially need your help even more. Lesser-known volunteering places that are in desperate need of some help include Bosnia, Sri Lanka, and Ethiopia. Your contributions to these societies will arguably go further as fewer people are choosing to volunteer there.

Farm volunteers

You won’t change things overnight

It’s important to have some perspective when it comes to volunteering overseas. When you get there, you might be shocked by the living standards, but it’s important to now that you won’t be able to change everything during your visit. Of course, you’ll be contributing to a great cause and will be making people’s lives better, but the bigger changes will come later.

Rome wasn’t built in a day so you can expect the much-needed changes in the communities you volunteer in to take a little while. Never give up hope though as there will come a time when volunteering won’t even be needed in these communities.

When you head overseas to volunteer, you shouldn’t go blindly. Make sure you plan your trip, know what your time will bring to the community you’re visiting, and enjoy the experience.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s fifth annual film festival is opening with a documentary feature about the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a group of three African Americans who turned to an 87-year-old fiddler as a mentor.

The Longleaf Film Festival opens Friday with a showing of “Don’t Get Trouble in Your Mind,” which documents the journey of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and their relationship with fiddler Joe Thompson, who died in 2012. That relationship led the group to revive the black string-band tradition.

The film from John Whitehead is one of three that will show Friday at the N.C. Museum of History.

Various films will be shown Saturday, when panel discussions focused on diversity and opportunity in filmmaking and legal issues will be held.

The awards ceremony will be held Saturday evening.

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About the Stanley Cup in 2 Minutes

“Predictable” is rarely an adjective applied to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But this year’s NHL postseason has been especially chaotic, with favorites like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals ejected early in favor of long-suffering hockey franchises, like the Carolina Hurricanes and St. Louis Blues.

As the Eastern and Western conference finals are set to get underway, there’s no better time to familiarize yourself with the prize the four remaining teams are after: The Stanley Cup, considered by many the sports world’s most beautiful trophy. TIME recently hosted the Stanley Cup and one of its “keepers,” Howie Borrow, who offered all manner of interesting Cup trivia.

For example: When the bottommost ring of the Stanley Cup is filled with the names of the teams and players who have most recently won it, the topmost ring is removed, retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, and a new ring is added to the bottom to create space. Also: While fans are allowed to touch the Cup, superstition and tradition keep the most loyal hockey fans from doing so (this reporter resisted the urge).

To learn more about the Stanley Cup, watch our video above — and enjoy the rest of the playoffs.

Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel has something to say about THAT episode

Words by Maisie Bovingdon

Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel paid a heartfelt tribute to the HBO series, as well as her co-stars, following a very dramatic episode on Sunday night, which also saw a Starbucks coffee cup make a surprise appearance.

The 30-year-old star, who plays Missandei of Naath, starred in her final scenes for the medieval fantasy show, which aired on the weekend.

In the fourth episode of the eighth and final ever season, Missandei was killed by Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

But Nathalie’s final goodbye had us all choked for more reasons than one; not only was her dramatic exit scene a tear-jerker, but so was her sweet Instagram post, in which she admitted her character has taught her a huge life lesson.

She posted a picture of her character on her Instagram account, which read: ‘It’s been one of my greatest joys playing Missandei of Naath… The quiet and kind translator. A brilliant woman who overcame so much suffering and found herself, her voice… and her one and only love.

‘She represented so much for me, personally, that I have no choice but to carry the things she has taught me into my life going forward.’

Nathalie went on to gush about Emilia Clarke – who plays Daenerys Targaryen – and hailed her ‘a source of light and laughter’. Aww!

She continued: ‘Thank you to everyone who made it possible for me to play this part… this life changing part… there are too many to list… @emilia_clarke GIRL! I love you… SO much. I’ve loved playing your BFF for the past 7 years. Thank you for being such a wonderful person in my life and a source of light and laughter.

‘Playing Missandei and Grey Worm’s journey has been so special. I couldn’t have asked for a more generous and supportive co-star… Also… We’ve been out in these streets together boiiii negotiating so much but always having each other’s back. Thank you for all of it… you have been a dear friend at every point.

‘To the entire cast and crew… You will always hold a special place in my heart. The love and energy we shared will be hard to match. I feel like I hit the jackpot meeting and working with you all. I love you.’

Nathalie went on to thank fans for their support, before she concluded: ‘Missandei is sipping a rum on a beach somewhere in sky.’

Our hearts just broke a little.

Jenelle Evans Is ‘Really Upset’ About MTV’s Decision to Cut Ties With Her

Jenelle Evans isn’t pleased with MTV’s decision to cut ties with her following news that her husband, David Eason, shot and killed their French bulldog Nugget, a source tells Us Weekly.

“Jenelle was shocked and is really upset,” the insider explains to Us of how the 27-year-old Teen Mom 2 star is handling things. “The decision was given to her suddenly after a lot of back and forth with MTV.”

The source notes that Evans’ mom, Barbara Evans — who was with the reality star’s 9-year-old son, Jace, on a cruise when the incident with the canine occurred — “is also upset.”

A spokesperson for the network confirmed exclusively to Us Weekly on Tuesday, May 7, that MTV had let Evans go.

“MTV ended its relationship with David Eason over a year ago in February 2018 and has not filmed any new episodes of Teen Mom 2 with him since,” a statement to Us read. “Additionally, we have stopped filming with Jenelle Eason as of April 6, 2019 and have no plans to cover her story in the upcoming season.”

After the dog nipped at Eason, 31, and Evans’ 2-year-old daughter, Ensley, the pipe welder admitted to killing the canine.

“I don’t give a damn what animal bites my baby on the face. Whether it be your dog or mine, a dog is a dog and I don’t put up with that s—t at all. I’m all about protecting my family, it is my life’s mission. Some people are worth killing or dying for and my family means that much to me,” he captioned an Instagram video of the toddler at the time. “You can hate me all you want but this isn’t the first time the dog bit Ensley aggressively. The only person that can judge whether or not an animal is a danger to MY CHILD is ME.”

Evans, for her part, shared her heartbreak about the death of animal alongside a photo of her with Nugget on Instagram at the time. She later opened up to Us about her thoughts on leaving her husband — whom she wed in September 2017 — following his actions.

“At this time, we are dealing with this rough situation. I want to focus on what’s best for me and my kids,” the 16 & Pregnant alum told Us, noting that the pair weren’t on speaking terms. “[Divorce is] in thoughts, but nothing is finalized. … I’m too hurt and upset at the fact he did that. It’s taking time to get over this whole situation, and it’s making me feel he’s very cruel and doesn’t have a heart on many ends.”

If you are aware that an animal is in imminent danger, please call your local police department or PETA at 757-622-7382.

The US military really doesn’t want to talk about UFOs anymore

navy ufo

The relationship between the U.S. government and UFO researchers has always been a strange one. Releases of information on UFO observations by the government have always been scarce, leading to accusations of conspiracy and cover-ups. It doesn’t appear that’s going to change any time soon.

In 2018 a report surfaced describing the study of alleged otherworldly materials by at least one company under contract with the U.S., along with video of a days-long confrontation between unidentified aircraft capable of physics-defying maneuvers and U.S. Navy pilots. Now, The Washington Post reports that the Navy is taking new measures to secure information related to such sightings and, put simply, will continue to prevent the general public from learning about them.

Credit Unions vs. Banks: 8 Key Differences You Totally Need to Know About

Managing your finances involves a lot of big decisions: How should you invest your funds? How should you structure your budget? Where the heck should you even store your money?

Credit unions and banks are similar in that they offer the standard checking accounts, savings accounts, CDs (certificates of deposit) and money market accounts, and they typically offer mortgage, auto and small-business loans.

But while the financial products are similar, there are key differences in the way banks and credit unions are structured and the benefits they offer to members.

Credit Union vs. Bank: What’s the Difference?

Banks are for-profit organizations, which means they invest the money you entrust them with and the interest they charge on loans. They use that money to grow the company and pass along dividends to the owners.

Credit unions have a different ownership structure: They are nonprofit and member-owned, meaning dividends, though small, are passed along to every single member instead. Credit union members have voting power and can elect members to the board of directors to ensure they are represented in the credit union’s decisions.

Both credit unions and banks are typically insured through the U.S. government for up to $ 250,000 per deposit account — banks through the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.) and credit unions through the NCUSIF (National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund), which is a part of the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration).

Each type of financial institution has its benefits and drawbacks. Here’s how credit unions and banks stack up across eight essential categories:

1. Interest Rates

The biggest draw of credit unions is the higher interest rates they pay. Because credit unions are member-focused, they prioritize higher interest rates on checking accounts, savings accounts, CDs and money market accounts.

Banks, on the other hand — especially national banks — have high overhead and are profit-driven, so they pay lower interest rates on their bank accounts.

Winner: Credit unions

2. Fees

For the same reasons they can pay higher interest rates, credit unions can offer lower fees on their accounts than banks. In fact, many credit unions offer free checking accounts and free savings accounts, while many banks charge monthly maintenance fees to account holders.

Both banks and credit unions may also require minimum account balances, but banks are more likely to have higher overdraft fees. The higher fees at banks in combination with the lower interest rates can be a real prohibitor to financial growth.

Winner: Credit unions

3. Loans

Erica Chambers, right, and her daughter, Paisley Kinglade, 3, talk with banker Valentina Kurilchenko at Mount McKinley Bank in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Credit union members can also typically get lower loan rates on car loans, mortgage loans, personal loans and small-business loans than members of national banks.

Even better for those with low credit scores? Credit union officers are willing to sit down with you and work out a loan option that fits your unique credit picture. Banks, on the other hand, calculate risk based on credit scores alone and are more likely to reject applicants with low scores.

However, banks are more likely to offer credit cards, though these typically come with higher interest rates.

Winner: Credit unions

4. Rewards

So far, it may sound like credit unions are a no-brainer. But they do have their shortcomings, a major one of which is rewards. While credit unions can offer better interest rates on accounts, lower or no fees, and better loans, banks typically offer better rewards programs — an easy way to make money just by opening an account or buying groceries.

Bank credit cards, for example, are more likely to offer rewards points and cash back, while bank accounts often come with sign-up bonuses. In general, credit unions lack such options.

Winner: Banks

5. Physical Locations

Large banks have brick-and-mortar locations all across the U.S., while credit unions tend to be regional. If your family moves regularly, investing with a national bank can prevent you from having to open and close accounts at every move.

Because big banks have more locations, it is also more convenient to access your funds in person and via fee-free ATMs.

Pro Tip

Ask whether your credit union participates in a shared networks of ATMs. These allow members to deposit and withdraw money at other credit unions’ ATMs.

Winner: Banks

6. Customer Satisfaction

As nonprofit, community-based institutions, credit unions are generally more focused on providing a personalized, friendly customer experience.

Last year, credit union members reported higher satisfaction than bank members in the 2018 FIS Performance Against Customer Expectations (PACE) study. The most important aspect leading to satisfaction across all age groups was trust, a good indicator that the more personalized approach of credit unions may lead to superior customer trust and, as a result, satisfaction.

Small banks, it’s worth noting, generally receive the same customer satisfaction ratings as credit unions because of their more personal vibe and one-on-one interactions.

Winner: Credit unions

7. Technology

Generally speaking, larger banks have had the resources to lead the industry in digital transformation over the last decade. That means better websites and mobile apps, as well as advances in card technology (e.g., chips), mobile check deposit and mobile wallets. However, as time has progressed, credit unions have been inching toward a more level playing field with site redesigns and app updates.

Pro Tip

If you’re concerned about the security of mobile banking, find a bank or credit union that can offer two-factor authentication on all online financial services and products.

Winner: Banks

8. Ease of Joining

Banks are eager to have you open an account with them because you represent a source of revenue. Credit unions can be a little more challenging to join, because membership is limited to those within the “field of membership.”

Typically, your ways into a credit union’s field of membership are through your employer, your place of worship, your physical location or your membership in a specific organization. Many credit unions will also let you join if a family member meets the criteria or if you make a small charitable donation.

Winner: Banks

Summary: Credit Unions vs. Banks

Criteria Credit Unions Banks
Interest rates Higher interest rates Lower interest rates
Fees Lower fees Higher fees
Loans Better loan rates More expensive loan rates
Rewards Typically do not offer rewards Frequently offer rewards
Physical locations Typically regional, meaning fewer locations and fewer ATMs, though more may be available through shared networks Big banks offer locations all across the country with larger ATM networks
Customer satisfaction Superior customer service with a desire to help Can feel colder at big banks, but small banks create a welcoming environment
Technology Behind, but catching up Advanced
Ease of joining Involved; must meet specific criteria Simple

Credit Union or Bank: How to Choose?

Grow Financial Federal Credit Union is pictured in Tampa , Fla.

If you’re keeping score, credit unions and banks are tied 4-4 across the eight factors we considered above.

So how do you know if you should go with a bank or a credit union?

1. Determine what’s most important to you. Do you want to earn a little more from annual dividends and higher interest rates, or do you prefer advanced technology and convenience from your financial institution?

2. Look for the very best of both options. The pros and cons in this article are very general. Individual banks and credit unions may diverge from the norm. You might find a bank with no fees and great loan options, or a credit union that makes it incredibly easy to join and offers a rewards-based credit card. Thoroughly research several banks and credit unions before making a decision.

3. Don’t forget online banking. Managing your finances has gone completely digital. Online banks often offer much higher interest rates than banks or credit unions. Include these in your search.

4. Open multiple accounts. Nothing is stopping you from opening checking and savings accounts with a credit union and applying for a credit card from a big bank. Diversifying your finances can make things more challenging, but it can also get you the very best rates, rewards and features.

“Israel Was The Worst Look For Me” Adrienne Houghton Talks About Being Led To Her Husband By The Holy Spirit And Not Logic

Bloggers Who Brunch x Adrienne Bailon Event

Source: Gabriel Olsen / Getty

In a very spiritual and conversation, Adrienne Houghton spoke with Angelica Nwandu, founder of The Shade Room, to discuss holding to your faith in light of disappointment, particularly in waiting for God to give you the desires of your heart.

Angelica shared that she desired marriage so strongly, she placed it over her relationship with God. Nwandu said that her desire for marriage and God’s withholding of it, put her in a depressed state.

“Here I was. I came from having no money, facing eviction, living in Hawthorne. And then God brought me to a place of I don’t worry about money, I was able to buy a house. All these things were happening for me and I could not be grateful because the one thing. I used to tell God, ‘Yeah, that’s cool but you know what I really want. You know the desire. You know what I really asked for. Why give me the secondary things, give me the number one thing that I wanted.” And I started to think God was spiteful. For some reason in my head, I started thinking, ‘Ima be 60 and I’m never going to be married because God knows that’s the one thing that I want.’ Now I look back, if I had a husband, I would be in divorce court. I had a lot of things I had to work on. He was keeping me from ruining myself and a promise that he had for me.”

The host of the show, Stephanie Ike spoke about expectations not being met in relationships and Adrienne shared this.

“For me one of my lowest points was relationship things. Especially in my twenties. Oh my twenties sucked. They were awful. And a lot of it had to do with wanting to be loved. I was looking for this love and I love really hard and so I expected that in return. And when I wouldn’t receive that love in return it was incredibly hurtful. Even making the decision of breaking an engagement, not only was that depressing but it’s embarrassing. Moments like that can make you feel so low. There’s so many things you think of in that moment that literally make you feel like, ‘God, why do you feel so far from me.’

I know that I know that I know that I have a praying mom. And I know that I know that I know that God had spoken to me and told me that that was not the man for me. But I wanted that. I was on some, ‘I been through too much. I deserve it. I want it.’

For me, the sadness was that it was the end of an era. Something that I wanted so bad wasn’t for me.

I even went through a period where I would talk to my mom and I would have an angry moment with her. Like, ‘Why did you love me the way I did when I was child?’ I was told ‘You’re beautiful.’ I was told I was loved everyday and then when I went to seek that in relationships, I wasn’t receiving that. I even had a guy so much as tell me, ‘I don’t tell you you’re pretty because you know you’re pretty.’

Angelica: Does Israel tell you, you’re pretty.

Adrienne: Every single day. But it didn’t come in the package I thought it was. You know how much wrong was wrong with him? Had I gone off of logic, I would never be as happy as I am today. I went against everything that logically made sense. I’m not an idiot. I’m not stupid. I read everything you read. I genuinely felt led by the Holy Spirit. This is the one for you. For people who were perfect, who had no ex wives, no children, but I would feel repellant toward them. They were on paper and what the public would have thought would have been perfect for me, they were repellant to my spirit.

Israel was the worst look I ever could have gone with. I was the worst look for him. He was the worst look for me. But in the storm. What looked like circus to everyone else, we were at home like this— leans back in a chilled position.

Four Things Steve Canal Wants You to Know About Marketing and Branding

Steve Canal was a star college athlete and now is a branding expert. He’s worked with an impressive list of companies including McDonald’s, Facebook, Coors Light, Delta, and Walmart. After some stumbles in his journey, he has learned many lessons of success in marketing and branding.

For example, Canal worked with the U.S. Army in its branding efforts. That work taught him the value of human connection. He led a national campaign that connected recruiters to potential soldiers looking for opportunities. The campaign involved wrapping hummers and jets in U.S. Army branding and turning them into interactive installations. It gave the brand identity, and made potential recruits feel invited and engaged.

His work has led him to other marketing and branding realizations from which other entrepreneurs and marketing and PR professions can learn.

Four Things Steve Canal Wants You to Know About Marketing and Branding (In His own Words)

-What leads the campaign is research. I need to know what you’re passionate about, what motivates you, and what you’re trying to accomplish. For example, even though they may offer similar products; Company A and Company B need a unique offering that must be brought to life. You have to understand what’s important to each brand and create a package that says I’m paying attention to you, I know what’s important to you. I don’t call them clients, I call them partners because it’s a two way street.

-Who is the brand? What are they offering, and who are the people who care? Some organizations do focus groups. Take that extra step to get that insight. Times are changing, people are changing, there’s a new mindset within age demographics that don’t think like you as the brand. That’s where localizing your brand comes to play. You must find advisers and champions within those communities to get you that information, and listen to them

-It’s important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are, and find opportunities to make your weaknesses a strength. If you’re super passionate about something or you need to know something then do it. Either way, you must prioritize what’s important for you to be able to do versus what you can outsource.

-Brands need to stop thinking they have all the answers by coming up with campaigns within their walls, and not having any diversity of thought. Many times you get into these rooms to pitch, and across the table there are a bunch of like minded people coming up with campaigns without being where their customer is. Diversity of thought will make or break brands in the future. If you’re not aligned with consumers then they won’t mess with you.

Cardi B Keeps It Real About Changing Her Body After Baby With The Help Of Plastic Surgery

2019 Billboard Music Awards - Arrivals

Source: Daniel Torok / Getty

Cardi B isn’t ashamed to say she’s gone the mommy makeover route after having daughter, Kulture.

The 26-year-old star, who just picked up six Billboard awards at the show on Wednesday night, opened up about her post-baby body nine months after welcoming Kulture.

“I feel good, and then sometimes I feel like not, you know?” she told Entertainment Tonight. “Your skin is more stretched out.”

Despite the stretching skin, Cardi has gone to different lengths to feel good in it. When asked about the rock-hard abs she’s been flaunting these days and what she has done to get them, Cardi coyly said, “Stuff.” And while she wanted to keep some things a secret, she wasn’t afraid to share that she’d recently had work done again on her breasts.

“I just got my boobs redone,” saying she’s fully healed from the experience. “My daughter f–ked me up! She did. She sure did.”

This revelation comes after Cardi revealed in an Instagram Live video last year that she was thinking about having some liposuction and getting her breasts done over, saying, “my body’s still not where I want it to be. I still got like a lot of love handles right here. They’re not much, but I’m used to having a real tight stomach, so it’s like seeing all this extra skin and sh-t — where the f–k did you came from? I might just get a little lipo, you know what I’m saying?”

“I will get my boobs done over,” she added. “I just don’t know when I’m gonna have the time to do it because I don’t think I got a whole month or three weeks for recovery.”

Well, seems like the star made time to recover just in time to be red carpet fresh for last night’s show.

This isn’t the first time she’s been honest about having work done. Cardi has spoken about having butt injections done during her time stripping, and getting work done on her breasts in the past. Being upfront about it all has seemingly given her the confidence to flaunt her curves, often doing so on social media and on stage. If you need some examples of this, hit the flip to check out more photos of Cardi showing off her body after baby.

All You Need To Know About Effectively Dealing With Lupus

AN ESTIMATED FIVE MILLION PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD ARE AFFECTED BY LUPUS, WITH 16,000 NEW CASE OF LUPUS BEING REPORTED EACH YEAR.  IT AFFECTS ONE IN 537 BLACK WOMEN. SINCE SYMPTOMS ARE DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE, MOST PEOPLE DON’T EVEN THEY HAVE LUPUS.

WHAT IS LUPUS?
Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue. The immune system exists to protect you from illness by sending antibodies AKA “the troops” out when it sees something is wrong.

With Lupus, “the troops” are dispatched when everything is okay, therefore creating a problem where one didn’t exist causing inflammation & other complications. It can attack the heart, the brain, the kidneys, the skin, the blood and more.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF LUPUS?

Symptoms can include fatigue, joint swelling, chest pain, rashes, hair loss, sun sensitivity, fevers, anemia, blood clots. A lot of autoimmune diseases mimic each other and can cause misdiagnosis; I know I received a few. So it’s important to visit your doctor if you start experiencing symptoms.

HOW IS LUPUS DIAGNOSED?
After a patient presents with a number of symptoms, she or he will take several tests including an ANA test that identifies the type of antibodies that are released in the body. People with autoimmune disease will likely test positive. Also other tests checking organ function and other conditions will be given.

Since symptoms don’t tend to pop up all at once, it usually takes about 6 years to get a diagnosis. My timeline was incredibly short because I took note of every new symptom that popped up & then jotted it down in my phone. By the time I ended up in the hospital, I was able to show my ER doctor all of the symptoms I had been dealing with over the course of 6 months or so. I got my diagnosis 3 days after that.

WHAT CAUSES LUPUS?  CAN FLARE UPS BE PREVENTED?
The exact cause of lupus isn’t known, but there are genetic factors, so we as a people need to do better about discussing health issues that run in the family. It isn’t a fun conversation, but it’s a necessary one. I didn’t know until after I was diagnosed, that I had 3 cousins who had lupus.

Flares are when lupus activity is high and illness ensues; there’s usually a trigger. Flares can cause organ failure, and all of the symptoms I talked about to kick into high gear. Every lupus patient is different, so our triggers can vary. I know extreme levels of stress caused by other people and long periods of sun exposure are triggers for me.

To prevent future flares, I eliminated certain people and the things that stressed me out from my life and protect myself in the sun. It was VERY hard, but my health was most important. The only food proven to trigger a flare is alfalfa sprouts.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT FORMS OF LUPUS?
Yes, Systemic, which is the type I have – it affects the entire body; Cutaneous, that affects the skin – rashes, lesions; neo-natal & drug induced. The last two are temporary and the symptoms typically go away.

DOES DIET PLAY A ROLE IN LUPUS? IF SO WHAT TYPES OF FOOD NEED TO BE AVOIDED?
A: I am not a physician, but diet & exercise play a huge role in my ability to live a full life. I was able to identify what food caused inflammation in my body and eliminated them; I dropped meat, dairy, anything processed, and a ton of other things that specifically cause inflammation in my body, including eggplant, Brussel sprouts, chocolate & other foods that aren’t necessarily bad.

I haven’t been on medication for a few years now and maintain a very strict lifestyle. Keep in mind that Lupus is a condition that affects each person differently, so the foods that cause inflammation for me, may not in a fellow lupie.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON CLINICAL TRIALS AND ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT OPTIONS?
I believe those are two viable options for improved treatment & wellness. In my experience, alternative treatment options, have worked out well.

That includes my rigorous diet, high intensity exercise, constantly eliminating stress and finding mental peace. I started my video production company to alleviate work stress & came to peace with having lupus by telling patient stories through video. I found my happy place there.

know a lot of Black people are terrified of clinical trials and rightly so. The history of clinical trials, for us, in this country is vile. Unfortunately because we don’t participate, scientists don’t really know how certain therapies react in “us”.

\So ultimately, when you’re prescribed something, you are participating in a clinical trial, and then hey, we’ll see what happens. We need to get on the front end of this. About 5% of black people participate in clinical trials. This is a brown person’s disease, so we need to be a part of the conversation.

There are regulations in place to protect participants, and not all trials require you to try drug therapies; some are just surveys.

HOW DOES HAVING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE IMPROVE CARE?

I’d like to think I’m a nice person anyway, but it’s important to be nice & positive when you’re in a hospital. Remember that doctors & nurses are people too and while they have to treat you, if you’re rude or not nice, your care may reflect that.

Also, the mind is such a powerful thing, I believe being positive aids in the healing process. You are well because you think you are well; you can be sicker because you think and accept that you will just be sick. Meet your body halfway and get your mind and spirit on board!

WHAT’S THE BEST WHY TO FIND OR CREATE A SUPPORT SYSTEM?

A: When I first diagnosed, I just wanted to talk to some OG’s in the Lupus game and see what life would be like. I was scared. This advice applies to anyone dealing with some sort of dis-ease. Look up local support groups and keep attending different ones until you find your community.

If you live in a more rural area, online support groups and communities are amazing. Also follow folks who inspire you, share your story & ask your homegrown community to keep you accountable for your wellness. Then, reach out to them if you’re dealing with a new symptom or chronic issue, find out if they’ve ever gone through something similar. Trust me, it helps a lot!

WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING ATTENTION TO ONES BODY – WHAT ARE SOME THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR?

You know you best! Always be aware of what your “normal” is and when it feels off, pay attention. Advocate for yourself, ask your doctor a lot of questions, take notes at your appointment. Don’t just accept things you don’t understand.

Look out for extreme fatigue, and I don’t mean just being tired; fatigue comes with heaviness in the body, and feeling as if you just can’t get enough sleep. Joint swelling, rashes/eczema, unexplained low-grade fevers…a patient will likely present a handful or even just one of these symptoms at a time, so keep track.

WHERE CAN LISTENERS GET MORE INFORMATION?

The internet is a wonderful & sometimes scary place for information so BE SURE to review reputable sites. I do a lot of advocacy work with the Lupus Research Alliance (LRA). Their website is lupusresearch.org. You can also reach me on social at ProducedbyANP.

Bobby Brown Slams Chris Rock’s ‘Tasteless’ Joke About Whitney’s Drug Use

Bobby Brown was not amused when Chris Rock made time over the weekend to post a tasteless joke about Whitney Houston’s drug use.

Rock shared a meme on social media of the late singer looking anything but enthusiastic about giving an interview. The image read: “Me sitting in a meeting that could’ve been an email,” but the comedian added his own caption: “Hurry up I got crack to smoke.”

Many commenters slammed the joke as “tasteless” and  “trash” and simply “not funny,” but  Brown noted, “During this time of women empowerment you chose to use your time to try and humiliate our QUEEN!!!”

He added, “I thought you was a friend of the family.”

Peep the post below.

Rock ultimately deleted the post.

Bobby and Whitney were married from 1992 to 2007 and had one child together, Bobbi Kristina, who died in 2015, three years after Houston drowned in a bathtub while reportedly acutely intoxicated from cocaine. Bobbi Kristina died in a similar manner to her mother.

Houston, who was 48 when she died, denied using crack cocaine during a 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer.

“I make too much money to ever smoke,” she said. “Let’s get that straight, k? We don’t do crack. We don’t do that. Crack is wack.”

Brown previously blasted Kanye West for paying $ 85,000 to license a photo of Houston’s drug den inside her  Atlanta home for the cover of Pusha-T’s album “Daytona.”

Stuff I Know About SEO

stock photo of woman typing on computer

Readers expressed an interest in some “behind the scenes” posts here at Corporette — this is the first in an occasional series. This one is about Kat’s knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO), defined as “the process of increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine.”

When this blog was only a year or two old, I got extraordinarily lucky: I won a one-hour consult with an SEO expert. I don’t remember where I won it, or who the expert was, but I remember that call like it was yesterday. She looked at my Google Analytics and told me a bunch of interesting things:

  • We were ranking for the phrase “comfortable heels” in Google and I should do everything possible to hang on to that — create more content on comfortable heels, link to it frequently, and in general build and maintain that content. I created our Guide to Comfortable Heels shortly thereafter, and I spend 30–90 minutes every six months updating it, and we’re still ranking for it.
  • People were searching for things like “what to wear to a lunch gala.” (This was back in the old days when you could see searches in Google Analytics; now, 95% of the time you cannot.) But, I asked, confused, what attorneys attended lunch galas? That wasn’t a thing, was it? I don’t know, the SEO expert admitted — but you should make a post titled that anyway so they find you when they’re searching.

I’ve taken a bunch of SEO courses and read a ton about SEO in the intervening decade — to be clear, this is something that other people are experts in, and my understanding is ham-handed at best. Plus, the advice keeps changing, thanks to Google algorithm changes, so it’s a bit of a moving target. Still, you might be surprised how much SEO thought goes into each blog post, or has at least since about 2015 or so:

  • At a very early stage for almost every substantive blog post we do, I ask an assistant to do some quick research on the appropriate keywords. There are seriously fancy tools you can use here, and we have some nice subscriptions to those tools, but we frequently just end up doing Google searches for various ideas. This helps us make sure that the words we’re using get us into the right “stream of content,” and figure out which has more search volume. From there we usually determine which keyword, if any, we think we can rank for.
    • More thoughts on the correct “stream of content”: For example, we had an old post entitled “Calling All Tuckers.” Google doesn’t like such titles because they are unclear, and as you might expect, there are different streams of content around “tucking” — some for shirts, some for drag queens. The goal of our keyword research is making sure that we get in the right stream for us to join the conversation or contribute to the existing conversation.
  • Sometimes we’re already ranking for specific keywords, so we try to use slightly different keywords to get into a different search entirely. We’ve had posts titled “nude heels,” “nude-for-you heels,” “beige heels,” “stylish skin-tone heels,” “nude pumps,” “nude shoes for the office,” and more.
    •  A lot of other bloggers will advise you to take older posts that were optimized for lower volume searches and redirect that post towards a new URL, essentially wiping the first post off the face of the Internet. I almost never do this kind of redirect, though, because of all the threadjacks and off-topic reader comments — so instead, I link to older posts from newer posts. So, again using the Hunt for an example, we frequently say something like, “Curious for older installments? Here were our posts from 2019, 2018, 2017…” and so forth. It would be stronger SEO juice if we used the keywords for hyperlinks instead of the years, but just joining them together is creating a strong link for Google and other search engines.
  • I have yet to find an artful way to deal with a topic that I know we’ll never rank for but still want to try to be slightly smart for SEO. So, for example, you’ll see a lot of silly SEO efforts at things like “Crockpot Recipes for Smart Women!” They make me cringe as much as you do, and I should probably just choose something witty and forget about it. You may also notice that a lot of our stories have an adjective in front of them — STYLISH skin-tone heels, COMFORTABLE work pants — that’s mostly done to try to get out from under the store rankings (which may take up the first page entirely for a search like “skin-tone heels”) and into a more editorial search ranking.
  • Writing for SEO is a bit like writing a legal memo or brief — it’s a fairly specific style. The same keyword should be used numerous times in each post, as well as in the post URL (that’s usually how you can tell what keyword we’re targeting) and image files, excerpts, meta descriptions, and wherever possible, headers. I usually try to use the base keyword as well as anything else relevant when I post to Pinterest and other social media
  • Speaking of images and Pins — you may notice that Google offers you an option to narrow your search by images instead of words (or videos, or news). Pinterest seems to be very powerful for image searches, so even though I’m less than clear about our social media goals for Pinterest, I try to send an appropriately-sized pin for almost every story to Pinterest, even for older stories. (Next to Facebook, Pinterest is one of our top referral sources.)
  • At the end of every year, we do our big roundup for which stories are the top for Google Analytics and stuff. While I do think those are interesting for readers, as well, we also get a lot of SEO benefit because it helps us see the long tail, which posts are the strongest, which are still surprisingly getting traffic, etc. On a weekly basis, our workwear reports almost always rank the highest in terms of sheer page views, but looking at the blog over the course of a year is a different matter, and it’s always interesting to see where we’re succeeding and failing. Sometimes we have what I think are well-written, useful posts that other outlets aren’t going to have — and if they’re not getting traffic, it’s often because they are poorly optimized.
  • Another thing to kind of keep in mind about SEO goals is how to reach the ideal reader or our target demographic — so as often as possible in meta descriptions and social media descriptions, I more overarching keywords to draw readers to the site, like “women lawyers,” “work outfits,” and so on.
  • I spend way too much of my time (personally) updating the SEO on older posts, linking them to other relevant Corporette posts, adding new images, and putting them in the stream of things we send to Pinterest and occasionally to Facebook. I decided a while ago not to have my SEO assistant look for “best keywords” for the older posts; I just go with whatever looks like the best keyword I might be able to optimize the post for based on its already existing content.
  • SEO at CorporetteMoms should be much stronger than it is — if you google “blog for working moms,” I’m not even sure you’d find it in the first 50 rankings. I was following a lot of Pat Flynn’s thoughts on niche SEO at the time I launched the blog, and I think I entirely flubbed it — so all of this is definitely a work in progress.

Tools I Use for SEO:

  • Yoast (premium plugin)
  • SEO assistant to help me find keywords (I trained my cousin with Yoast courses, to be honest; she only works for me about 5 hours a week now.)
  • SEMrush (for occasional deep dives)
  • Google Analytics and Webmaster
  • Google Trends

The Good News About Money This Week

WHAT DID WE LEARN LAST WEEK THAT’S A POSITIVE ON THE ECONOMIC FRONT?

According to the Commerce Department, the U.S.gross domestic product rose at a 3.2 percent annual rate in the first three months of the year. This is an impressive number, considering many economists and analysts have been concerned about the possibility of a recession in the past few months.

REMIND US WHAT GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT IS, AND WHY IT IS AN IMPORTANT THING TO MEASURE?

Gross domestic product, or GDP, the value of all goods and services produced in the U.S. Put simply, it measures the entire output of the country’s economy, and it is how we gauge economic growth or contraction. When looking at GDP growth, any growth rate above 3% annually is a good number for developed economies like the US or the EU.

WERE WE EXPECTING TO SEE SUCH POSITIVE GROWTH?

Most analysts did not expect such a great number this quarter. Just recently, the Atlanta Federal Reserve had projected Q1 GDP growth would be just .1%, and for good reason! They may be distant memories now, but in the first quarter, we had an extended partial government shutdown, a spell of crippling cold weather due to the polar vortex, and a worrisome February jobs report. All of these followed on significant stock market jitters at the close of 2018. Taken together, these seemed to foreshadow an economic slowdown.

SO WHAT IS DRIVING GDP GROWTH?

Trade was a big factor. In the first three months of this year, the value of goods we imported fell as a result of concerns about tariffs on goods from China and other countries. At the same time, the US exported more goods and services. This provided a boost for American manufacturers, as did greater inventory investment, which is essentially companies buying goods and services to produce their own products.

Solid consumer spending and state and local government spending on projects like roads also contributed to the strong GDP growth in the first quarter. Finally, the Federal Reserve’s decision to shelve its plans for continued interest rate hikes this year helped boost investors and corporate sector confidence.

ARE THERE WARNING SIGNS FOR THE MONTHS AHEAD?

The housing market continued to be a drag on the larger economy last quarter. Trade and inventory spending in a given quarter can distort the longer-term trends in the economy. That may be true here, as the trade landscape is very uncertain at the moment and quarters with high inventory spending are often followed by quarters with lower spending. Rising oil prices could also hit consumers and businesses alike. Finally, wage growth and consumer confidence will weigh heavily on whether consumer spending continues to be strong.

WHAT DOES THIS NEWS MEAN FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE?

Between this strong GDP number on Friday and the outstanding corporate earnings reports from last week, anyone who owns stock has benefited. The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ hit new highs, and the Dow flirted with another record close. Overall, a strong economy should continue to keep unemployment low, which in turn should fuel higher wage growth for workers. Let’s hope the good news continues.

Kenzo Takada Celebrates U.S. Book Launch at FIT, Talks About Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly

A LIFE IN PICTURES: Tuesday night’s understated book signing for Kenzo Takada at the Fashion Institute of Technology was just his style.
About 50 guests were invited to the FIT Foundation’s low-key event at the school’s Art & Design gallery. Stateside for a three-day stay, the Paris-based designer planned to return to campus Wednesday afternoon for an informal chat with students. Known for his inclusive approach to fashion that incorporates multicultural influences with exacting techniques, Takada did not wish to judge the students’ designs — to avoid dissuading them in any way.
Undergrads were not among the well-wishers Tuesday night, since alcohol was served. Sipping on a glass of red wine, Takada was surprised to learn that FIT has a museum on campus and asked about what types of exhibitions have been staged there.
The guest of honor was looking forward to seeing the musical “My Fair Lady” on Broadway, before flying out of town. Earlier in the day, Takada dashed into Barneys New York’s Madison Avenue store to try the chicken at its Freds restaurant. En route, he also ducked into the Celine boutique because he is “very curious” about what Hedi Slimane is doing there. One eagle-eyed staffer recognized Takada and

Tyrion and Jaime Gave Us Yet Another Hint About That Cersei Prophecy on Game of Thrones

Warning: The post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones.

Who will kill Cersei Lannister? The question has weighed heavily on the Game of Thrones’ universe ever since Maggy, a fortune teller, delivered a prophecy to Cersei when she was a child. The show’s fifth season shows Maggy delivering three predictions, including that Cersei would be replaced by a younger and more beautiful queen.

Helen Sloan—HBO

But in George R. R. Martin’s books, Maggy adds one more crucial prediction: “When your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.”

Valonqar is High Valyrian for “little brother.” Over the years there has been widespread speculation about who the valonqar could be, with most people pointing to one of Cersei’s two little brothers. One is Tyrion, her constant nemesis who has been itching to kill her for several seasons, and another is Jaime, her lover and twin born minutes after her. Both of them have recently been marked by Cersei: she sent Bronn to kill them with a crossbow after they both defected to serve Daenerys in Winterfell.

However, it’s not specified whether the valonqar refers to her younger brother or simply any younger brother. This ambiguity means that Westeros’ other powerful younger brothers–including the Hound, Jon Snow, Bran, Arya wearing someone else’s face, Euron, or even Cersei’s unborn baby–could be candidates to bring her down.

But “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the most recent episode of Game of Thrones slyly provides two hints that point to Tyrion, the most obvious option, being the valonqar. In the show’s opening moments, Jaime stands before the powers of Winterfell, who decide whether or not to set him free. When Tyrion vouches for Jaime’s trustworthiness, Daenerys responds by echoing the words of Maggy: “Perhaps he trusts his little brother to defend him, right up to the moment he slits my throat.”

After Brienne’s unwavering words of support lead Jaime to walk free, he joins Tyrion on the battlements of Winterfell; they talk about the relationships with Cersei and their likely impending deaths at the hands of the White Walkers. As is often the case with Tyrion, he delivers a cheeky joke that also contains kernels of truth:

At least Cersei won’t get to murder me. I’m sure I’ll feel some satisfaction denying her that pleasure while I’m being ripped apart by dead men. Maybe after I’m dead, I’ll march down to King’s Landing and rip her apart.

That would certainly be a grim realization of the prophesy: a zombified Tyrion, marching to King’s Landing alongside thousands of other wights, and killing Cersei not out of revenge or self-protection but an unconscious lust for death. This theory will likely either be set into motion or debunked in the next episode–which will cover the Battle of Winterfell.

Thinking About Taking Money From Your 401(k)? Here’s What You Should Know

Although I’m a full-time freelancer now, I remember the days of receiving pay stubs — reading that neat little list of all the places my money was going.

Mostly, I remember how many of those places weren’t my pockets. Federal and state taxes, social security, health care… and, yes, a percentage of my wages deferred to my 401(k), funneled directly toward my hope of future retirement.

This is a personal finance blog you’re reading, so we probably don’t have to reiterate the importance of retirement savings. (Even though we just did.)

But as responsible and saving-savvy as you might be, you probably still want to know: How — and when — can you get those 401(k) contributions back out again?

What’s a 401(k), Anyway?

Before we start talking about how to take money out of your 401(k), let’s talk about how it gets in there in the first place. What is this bowl of alphabet soup, anyway?

A 401(k) is a company-sponsored investment account designed to help you save money for retirement — and it gets you a tax break today, too. You set up a portion of your wages, usually expressed as a percentage of your overall salary, to be automatically deposited, or “deferred,” to your 401(k).

Then, you invest the assets and allow them to grow on the market, slowly but surely building up your nest egg you need to eventually throw in the towel. (Oh, and you won’t pay income taxes on those funds until you take them out, either!)

The really cool thing about 401(k)s is that, unlike many other retirement accounts, your employer can also make contributions — and many employers do, up to a certain percentage of your wages.

This is called an “employer match,” and it basically means free money: For every dollar you defer up to the designated percentage, your employer will put in another, which is a super-easy way to increase your retirement savings.

We don’t have time in this post to go into all the nitty-gritty details about how a 401(k) works, and regardless, you’ll need to check with your company for specifics.

Now let’s talk about how to access your contributions — and capital gains — after you invest them.

Withdrawals, Distributions and Penalties, Oh My!

If you were to head to the IRS website to try and learn more about 401(k) withdrawal rules, you might end up scratching your head. The word “withdraw” doesn’t appear even once in the resource guide.

But fear not: Your 401(k) funds aren’t actually locked away forever. The government just likes to keep things interesting by opting for very specific terminology.

A 401(k) withdrawal is known, in IRS-speak, as a distribution. And there are very specific rules regarding when distributions can be made.

In general, you won’t be able to take money out of your 401(k) — at least, not without incurring a penalty — until one of the following things happens:

  • You reach age 59.5. (You celebrate half-birthdays, right? The IRS is very fond of them.)
  • You die, become disabled, or “otherwise have a severance from employment,” which is ominous-sounding, indeed.
  • Your employer terminates the plan or goes out of business.

If you withdraw your money outside of these circumstances, you’ll be hit with a hefty penalty: a 10% early distribution tax, along with the regular income taxes.

As if that weren’t enough, there are also rules about when you must make withdrawals. You’re not allowed to let your 401(k) contributions grow forever.

Once you reach age 70.5, you must begin taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your 401(k) account, unless you are — heaven forbid — still working.

It might feel stifling, having your money restricted by so many ironclad rules.

After all, you earned it, and you did the budgetary shuffling required to afford to put it away. Why shouldn’t you be able to take it out whenever you want to?

Well, for one thing, ripping your retirement savings out of your account is a surefire way to miss out on compound interest, which is how you’re going to turn that measly 3% of your paycheck into a livable retirement income.

And since you’re getting a tax break, the government’s not too keen on having you withdraw your funds willy-nilly.

But there are certain exceptional circumstances in which you can take distributions even if you’re nowhere near your 60th birthday.

What Are the Exceptions?

As strict as the tax code may be, it’s not entirely without humanity. You can make penalty-free distributions from your 401(k) in the following circumstances:

  • You have, or develop, a qualifying disability.
  • You leave your job and the company agrees to remit periodic payments for at least five years, or until you reach the age of 59.5.
  • You’re required by court order to pay the money to your divorced spouse, child, or dependent.
  • You’re paying for medical expenses that qualify for an income tax deduction. The IRS allows you to deduct medical costs that exceed 10% of your AGI, or adjusted gross income (7.5% if you or your spouse is over 65). For example, if your AGI is $ 30,000, you’d be able to withdraw only enough to pay medical expenses over $ 3,000, or $ 2,250 if you’ve already celebrated your 65th birthday.
  • You’ve weathered a disaster for which IRS relief has been granted.
  • You die (😢), in which case the distributions are made to a beneficiary.

You can also take early withdrawals, known as “hardship distributions,” from your 401(k) if you can demonstrate you’re under certain types of serious financial burden.

However, hardship withdrawals are limited to your elective deferrals only — that is, you can take out the money you put into the account, but not any of the investment gains you might have earned in the meantime.

(It’s up to your employer whether or not you can take out any of those matching funds we discussed earlier, or any other discretionary contributions made by your company.)

You should also note that you’ll still be required to pay income taxes on the distribution — and, if you’re not yet 59.5, the 10% penalty will still apply.

What Qualifies for a 401(k) Hardship Withdrawal?

The No. 1 criterion for qualifying for a hardship withdrawal is “immediate and heavy financial need.” The IRS outlines the following instances where this kind of need may arise:

  • You, your spouse, or your dependents incur medical expenses.
  • You need money to cover costs related to the purchase of your principal residence — but this does not include mortgage payments.
  • You’re footing the bill for higher education costs for you, your spouse, your children or your dependents, including tuition, fees, room and board.
  • You need money to avoid being evicted from your home or having your mortgage foreclosed.
  • You’re faced with funeral expenses.
  • You need to repair certain damages to your principal residence.

It’s important to note that your employer ultimately decides whether or not you can take a hardship withdrawal from your 401(k) plan at all, no matter what your financial deal is.

And if you do take money out, you may be unable to make further contributions for a period of six months thereafter.

401(k) Loans

It’s also possible to borrow from your 401(k) — but just like any other loan, it must be repaid, on time and with interest.

If you fail to meet the terms of your 401(k) loan, the amount you owe back to the plan will become a distribution, and will thus be subject to the same taxes (and early withdrawal penalty) as it would have been if you’d taken it without the intention of repaying it.

Just as with hardship distributions, it’s up to your employer and 401(k) custodian as to whether or not loans are allowed. If they are, you’ll be able to take a maximum of 50% of your vested account balance (i.e., funds you actually own, which may include employer contributions) or $ 50,000, whichever amount is lower.

In most cases, you’ll have five years to repay the loan, unless it’s being used toward the purchase of your primary residence.

If you meet these requirements, however, the loan is not considered taxable income… but you definitely want to make sure you can pay it back on time!

What is the “Age 55” Rule?

If you’re almost, but not quite, at the age of retirement, these rules can feel even more stifling — which is why the IRS has implemented a special clause for savers aged 55 and older.

If you’re laid off, fired, or quit your job during or after the year of your 55th birthday, you get to make penalty-free distributions from your 401(k) plan… but only the one you were most recently invested in. That is, if you have other 401(k) accounts languishing from previous positions, you still won’t be able to access those funds until you reach the normal retirement age.

Which is one good reason to roll over your retirement account whenever you change jobs. Speaking of which…

Moving On: 401(k) Rollovers and Transfers

If you get a new job (or quit your career to go freelance or start a business), you may be wondering what will happen to your 401(k).

You might even be considering cashing it out so you can walk into your new life with a windfall. (We’d recommend you don’t, for reasons we’ll dive into in just a second.)

Although it’s not the same as withdrawing the money to be used from your own pocket, rollovers and transfers are another way to move your 401(k) funds — and given how frequently most of us change positions these days, it’s important to understand your options.

Here’s what you can choose to do when you’re leaving a job with a 401(k).

Direct Transfer

Probably the easiest way to deal with a dangling 401(k) is to simply roll it over into your new job’s plan — granted your new job has an eligible plan in the first place. (If you’re moving to a position that doesn’t offer a 401(k) or other compatible retirement benefit, you can roll the funds over into a traditional IRA.)

In a direct rollover, you never get to see the money — your existing plan’s custodian simply routes the money directly over to the new account manager. As such, you won’t have to worry about paying any income taxes or being assessed the early withdrawal fee, because you never have spending access to the funds in the first place.

Indirect Transfer or Rollover

Another option for bringing your 401(k) along with you to your new job is to do an indirect transfer, or rollover.

In this case, you actually do cash out your existing account, but with the intention of putting all the money right back into some other retirement-specific investment vehicle.

As long as you redeposit your entire account balance within 60 days of withdrawal, you’ll avoid paying any taxes or penalties.

However, there is one small fly in the ointment: Your existing account custodian is required by law to withhold 20% of the distribution, regardless of your good intentions… which means you’ll have to make up the difference out of your pocket when you fund the new account.

The money will eventually come back to you as a tax refund — but depending on the size of your 401(k), you might not have the funds to break even in the meantime.

And if you don’t redeposit the entire balance within the 60-day window, you’ll face those same early withdrawal penalties we’ve been discussing throughout the post, not to mention income taxes.

Take the Money and Run

Yes, you can cash out your 401(k) when you leave your job.

But if you do, again: You’ll pay the 10% penalty and add the windfall to your taxable income for the year.

And even worse, you’ll also be stripping yourself of one of the most powerful retirement savings devices at your disposal.

If you ever want to punch the clock for the very last time, you need to have some sort of investment vehicle… unless you’re independently wealthy or something. (In which case, you should still stash the money in a regular investment account so it can grow even more!)

Leave It Where It Is

Another option? Simply leave the funds where they are — as long as your company allows it. (If you’ve only worked there a short time or your account totals less than $ 5,000, they may force you to take it with you.)

Different 401(k) plans have different policies, fees and investment options, so if you’re happy with what your former company offers, you might let the money languish there and continue growing.

Of course, if you switch jobs, say, 10 times in your life and take this tack at each turn, you’ll end up with a scattered mess of a retirement portfolio — and as discussed above, you won’t be able to take full advantage of the age 55 rule.

Taking advantage of your company’s 401(k) plan is one of the very best ways to set yourself up for a comfortable retirement. These investment accounts carry lots of special incentives, including high contribution maximums as well as their tax-deferrable status.

But we get it: Life is expensive! And sometimes, you don’t have the cash you need to get through the present day, let alone some nebulous future moment.

Whenever possible, it’s best to leave your 401(k) funds invested and growing. Compound interest requires time to do its best work, and making early withdrawals can wreak havoc on your nest egg’s potential. It may take hard work and discipline, but future you is counting on your determination!

If you do need to take distributions from your 401(k), however, we hope this guide has offered some clarity as to how, when and why best to do so. (But really: Don’t. We mean it.)

Everything we’ve learned about Beyoncé’s Coachella performance from watching her Netflix-documentary ‘Homecoming’

Homecoming
Frank Micelotta/REX/Shutterstock

Only a week after the trailer dropped, Netflix released Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé. The highly anticipated (at least for the last seven days or so, as this is how long we’ve had to process the news) documentary offers fans an intimate, in-depth look at what really went on in the months leading up to her incredible 2018 Coachella performance.

The Formation singer – who made history as the first female black artist to headline the annual music festival in California – wrote, directed and produced the film and like anything Beyoncé Knowles-Carter does, the documentary does not disappoint.

For about 2.5 hours, Homecoming explores everything from the three sound stages for rehearsals to the design of the costumes (did we mention they’re custom Balmain), whilst finally showing footage of her jaw-dropping performance. In brief, there’s a lot to get into, so here are the most important takeaways.

‘Homecoming’ is a celebration of black creativity

It was really important for Beyoncé to have a black orchestra. Her ‘Homecoming’-themed set was inspired by HBCU traditions and included roughly 200 musicians, background singers and dancers, all recruited from historically black colleges and universities.

homecoming

Frank Micelotta/REX/Shutterstock

‘I wanted different characters; I didn’t want us all doing the same thing,’ she states in her documentary. ‘The things that these young people can do with their bodies and the music they can play, and the drumrolls, and the haircuts, and the bodies. It’s just so much damn swag. It’s just gorgeous, and it makes me proud.’

The performance took months of preparation

‘When I decided to do Coachella, instead of me pulling out my flower crown, it was more important that I brought our culture to Coachella,’ she explains. ‘There was a four-month period of rehearsals with Derek [Pixie] and the band before we started the four months of dance rehearsals. The music and those vocal rehearsals – that’s the heartbeat of the show.’

She handpicked every single detail of the set

Beyoncé personally selected all the details. From each dancer and every light, to the height of the pyramid, the shape of the pyramid and even the material on the steps.

Talking about the incredible costumes (the entire crew had two completely different sets of outfits for each weekend of Coachella), she reveals: ‘every tiny detail had an intention. There were so many meetings with Olivier [Rousteing].’

homecoming

Frank Micelotta/REX/Shutterstock

Beyoncé was supposed to headline in 2017

Beyoncé was originally set to headline at Coachella the year prior, but she got pregnant unexpectedly. ‘It ended up being twins, which was even more of a surprise. My body went through more that I knew it could,’ she shares openly.

‘I had an extremely difficult pregnancy. I had high blood pressure. I developed toxaemia, preeclampsia and, in the womb, one of my babies’ heartbeat paused a few times so I had to get an emergency C-section.’

She followed a very strict diet to get into shape

This performance was the singer’s first time back on the stage after giving birth to Rumi and Sir Carter, and she struggled to get back into shape. ‘I’m creating my own homecoming. And it’s hard,’ Beyoncé admits.

‘There were days that I thought I’d never be the same. I’d never be the same physically; my strength and endurance would never be the same. She shares that she had to rebuild her body: ‘It me a while to feel confident enough to freak [the performance] and give it my own personality.’

homecoming

Frank Micelotta/REX/Shutterstock

Beyoncé was dedicated – cutting out bread, carbs, sugar, dairy, meat, fish and alcohol, in order for her to meet her goal. ‘I definitely pushed myself further than I knew I could,’ she says, ‘and I’ve learned a very valuable lesson. I will never push myself that far again.’

Even Queen B struggles to balance her work and personal life

Taking on a performance like this when you’ve just given birth to twins, isn’t an easy task. Beyoncé is very honest about how, when they first started rehearsing, her mind was not there, but with her children. ‘What people don’t see is the sacrifice,’ she says. ‘I would dance, a go off to the trailer and breastfeed the babies.’

‘It was a lot to juggle,’ she confesses. ‘Just trying to figure out how to balance being a mother of a six-year-old and of twins that need me, and giving myself creatively and physically. It’s not like before when I could rehearse 15 hours straight. I have children. I have a husband. I have to take care of my body.’

To quote Netflix (or should we say Beyflix, as the streaming service changed its name for a day to celebrate the premier of the documentary), what a time to be alive. Homecoming is incredible film, and Beyoncé is an incredible artist. That’s something every music fan, whether or not you’re part of the Beyhive, will have to admit after watching this groundbreaking performance.

So sit back and enjoy.

This new study revealed something incredibly gross about beards

This new study revealed something incredibly gross about beards

This new study revealed something incredibly gross about beards

We’re all for people rocking their facial hair however they like (because you do you, guys). But a new study just revealed something very interesting about beards…and admittedly pretty gross, too. Apparently, there’s more bacteria in a man’s beard than on a dog’s fur. Yep.

Researchers at the Hirslanden Clinic in Switzerland studied samples from the beards of 18 men and the fur of 30 dogs, and their findings were published in European Radiology, a peer-reviewed journal, in February. They determined that even though most pups enjoy rolling around in the grass and mud, there’s a “significantly higher bacterial load in specimens taken from men’s beards” than in dog fur.

Though 23 of the 30 dogs had “high microbial counts” on their fur, all 18 of the men did in their beards, too. According to USA Today, the full study showed that disease-causing bacteria (like the kinds that cause urinary tract infections) were also found more frequently in beards than on our four-legged friends.

The researchers took their samples from the pups’ necks, an area which vets call “particularly unhygienic” due to canine skin infections, and found that “the beards of men harbor significantly more microbes than the neck fur of dogs and these microbes were significantly more pathogenic to humans.” Basically, men’s beards are harboring more grossness than our doggo’s fur.

Even though the sample size is admittedly small, we’ve gotta say: We’re a little skeeved out. Sorry, guys. (And maybe now’s the time to invest in some beard shampoo?)

7 Black Women Share What No One Told Them About Motherhood

First time mothers can all agree, there were things they were told and other things they simply had to learn. For Black Maternity Health Week (April 11-17), we spoke to seven Black mothers who opened up about their experience with motherhood.

Jasmine Ramnarine, 30, Vlogger

Once you deliver your baby, your body and mood can completely change. Your hormones do a complete 180. My legs and feet became extremely swollen to the point it hurt to walk. I also still looked and felt 10 months pregnant after birth. It took about a week and half for all the swelling to go down.

My tummy took several months to return to its normal complexion and shrink down. My postpartum stage was so much worse than actually carrying my child. I suffered from postpartum depression for several weeks constantly crying, blaming myself for everything and worrying about my baby.

But with the help from my husband and family I was able to get back to feeling like myself again. Becoming a mother is a huge adjustment for your mind, body and spirit but I am so proud to be a mother to my daughters, I wouldn’t change my experiences for anything in the world!

No one tells you how bad it hurts for obviously reasons. After 24 years, I think about how if I were educated about childbirth back then it wouldn’t have been so painful. I wouldn’t have declined that big needle in my spine. My doctor saw a 19-year-old kid, not a woman giving birth. So I wasn’t given options. I think generations behind me who are blessed with the Internet have an abundance of information. Research how you’d like your child birthing experience to be. It will make all the difference.

And lastly, you are a mom forever. It doesn’t stop at 18. This is a precious human being that you’re responsible for. Know that as humans we fail. You will fail your child. But all know that the love you give is what they will remember (and need) the most.

Until I became pregnant, it didn’t occur to me that pregnancy is the ultimate 9-month preparation course for motherhood. The moment your child takes over your body, you are no longer living for just you. Every single decision you make from the food you eat, to the mood you’re in, has an effect on the child. And once the baby is born, those same decisions affect your baby

Chevonne Tingle, 38, Motivational Speaker

I had my first child at 19, a baby boy. I didn’t know much then about pregnancy and birth but I’ve learned so much in 19 years. I learned about the benefits of having a Lotus birth which is where you leave your child placenta and umbilical cord attached and allow it to naturally separate from the baby. I’ve also learned that standing while giving birth is the best and most natural position to be in. If you lying down, you’re going against gravity.

I was 27 when I became pregnant with our first child and while I had done the usual research on pregnancy and delivery, it never really occurred to me that I could question what my doctor was telling me during our check-ups. My son ended up being delivered at 34-weeks by emergency c-section when the ultrasound tech noticed what looked like a blockage in the umbilical cord. It all happened so fast.\

One moment my doctor was telling me I would need to have surgery right then and the next I was in a wheelchair being taken to the operating room. After delivery and further inspection of the cord, it turned out to be a gelatinous section and not a blockage after all, but we were erring on the side of caution.
Two kids and two c-sections later (the last one was planned at 39 weeks because my kids are 14 months apart and my new doctor — we had since moved out-of-state — didn’t want to risk a uterine rupture). Now, I’m currently pregnant with my third. What I’ve learned between these pregnancies is how to advocate for myself and that you do have choices.
This time around I’ve decided to try for a vaginal birth after c-section. I was already going to be at the hospital, so if I ended up needing another c-section I would be in the right place. Then I thought about it and realized I had options. I knew there were several doctors at Cedars who allowed for a VBA2C, so I asked for her list of recommendations and set up meetings with the ones I thought would be the best fit.

I now have a doctor who is on board with me trying (I’ll be monitored the whole time) and I’ve hired a doula to be there with my husband and I through the process. It’s so important to have a supportive team on hand.

One thing I discovered as a new mother, one of twins at that, is how to really be conscious of the signs for postpartum depression and how to navigate through it. Being depressed for up to a year after giving birth was hard and being a young mother with very few friends that were mothers as well, I felt alone. I was moody, agitated, would have episodes of non-stop crying, panic attacks and found myself using other forms of soothing tactics to relieve the pain.\

If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have waited over a year to seek professional help, or see a physician for a diagnosis. I would have trusted that my friends and family would have supported me in my struggle as opposed to assuming that they’d pass judgment.

Have a baby for you and nobody else. Not to fix anything, and not to make someone happy, nope. Won’t work. Having a child is a lifelong, bittersweet commitment. Make sure that’s the core/ foundation. Mental health is so important. So many people may say things like “Forget about you, it’s not about you, you can’t have a life “ etc… but please remember, it’s definitely about you. You can not give your child the best and you are not mentally at your best. Make time for you, buy yourself things, go out, do regular errands without kids or just be alone with yourself. Just because you have a kid, your life shouldn’t stop.

Kail Wants to Quit ‘Teen Mom 2’ After Jenelle’s Mom Jokes About Killing Her

Kailyn Lowry and Jenelle Evans have been through their fair share of drama – but it all came to a head in January when Jenelle and her mother, Barbara Evans, went on Instagram Live and made a joke about killing her. While filming a video with Brittany DeJesus, Barbara joked they should “all get lit, and we’ll go kill Kail.”

The comment almost immediately went viral and Kail, 27, quickly got word. “I heard Barb wants to kill me. … Are drunk words sober thoughts?” she tweeted at the time. The incident played out during the Monday, April 15, episode of Teen Mom 2 and was extremely intense.

During the episode, Jenelle and her mom went to Atlanta for a girls’ trip to destress. Even though David Eason wasn’t thrilled about Jenelle traveling without him, she needed a break from the real world and said that she was tired of hearing Kailyn talk about her on her podcast, so off they went.

After a day of shopping, Jenelle and Barbara broke out the wine and beer and went live on Instagram. She added Briana Dejesus’ sister to her stream, too. However, it all came crashing down when producer Kristen called Barbara while the stream was still going on.

Fox News Anchors Shut Down Conspiracy Theories About Notre Dame Fire

During two separate occasions on Monday afternoon, Fox News anchors Shepard Smith and Neil Cavuto had to dump out of interviews after their guests wildly speculated and parroted conspiracy theories that the blaze that suddenly destroyed much of the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was an intentionally malicious act.

While anchoring breaking-news coverage of the fire, Smith interviewed witness Philippe Karsenty, the deputy mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine and a controversial right-wing media figure. Early in the call, Karsenty suggested that the Notre Dame blaze—which is currently being investigated as an accident—was a terrorist attack.

“It’s like a 9/11, a French 9/11,” Karsenty declared. “It’s a big shock. This church was there for more than 850 years. You need to know that for the past years, we’ve had churches desecrated each and every week all over France. Of course, you will hear the story of the politically—the political correctness, which will tell you it’s probably an accident.”

This FOX Reporter Joked While Talking About Nipsey Hussle’s Funeral

Nipsey Hussle’s tragic death broke hearts across the hip-hop community and beyond. His untimely passing inspired a truce between Los Angeles gangs. He had a grand home going service at the Staples Center where fans packed the venue to pay respects the the late rapper and his family. Whether you are a fan of not, this terrible loss was felt. While many outlets covered his funeral with respect, FOX News laughed and joked while covering Hussle’s farewell.

“Yesterday in  thousands lined the streets to say goodbye to rapper Nipsey Hussle,” FOX News reporter Laura Ingraham said during The Laura Ingraham Show Friday (Apr. 12). “This dear artist recently released a song called FDT ― F Donald Trump.”

“FDT” is actually rapper YG’s  2016 track that features Hussle and after she played a clip of the chorus she then mocked the rapper saying “That’s a very creative refrain, very catchy. “The chorus, it goes on and on. Is that related to the lowest unemployment ever basically for African Americans.”

Ingraham and her guest Raymond Arroyo also made fun of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan for mistakenly calling Hussle Nipsey Russell during his service.

“It’s always a good idea before you give a eulogy to know the name of the deceased,” Arroyo said sarcastically.

As a journalist it is very disrespectful, tactless and insensitive to discuss Hussle’s murder and funeral like it had no meaning or impact. Plus, the comment about the black people having the  lowest unemployment rate ever is false. Our unemployment rates were lowest while Barack Obama was in office.

Take a look at a brief clip of Ingraham below.

Khloe Kardashian Posts About Surviving ‘Hell’ a Day Before True’s Birthday

Khloe Kardashian Posts Cryptic Note About Surviving Hell

She’s a survivor. Khloé Kardashian’s daughter, True, is celebrating her 1st birthday on Friday, April 12, but the special day is clouded with bittersweet memories for the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star.

Kardashian, 34, gave birth to her only child with then-boyfriend Tristan Thompson just days after he was caught cheating with multiple women. The Strong Looks Better Naked author seemingly referenced the difficult year by posting a powerful Nikita Gill quote on social media.

The message, which was posted to her Instagram Stories on Thursday, April 11, read, “If you want to know what it’s like to survive hell and still come our shining brighter than the sun, just look into the eyes of a woman who has survived intense damage and refused to allow it to destroy her softness.”

On Wednesday, April 10, the reality television personality admitted that she is having a hard time dealing with her offspring’s upcoming birthday. “Is it weird that I think I’m having anxiety thinking True will be one on Friday?!?! I’m sad Time is flying as fast as it is,” she tweeted. “I’ll be happy, of course, I simply can’t understand where the time goes. Thank you Lord for every moment bring me the tissue.”

The KUWTK star gave the Cleveland Cavaliers player, 28, another chance after he cheated in April 2018, but she called it quits on their two-plus-year relationship in February after he was caught hooking up with Jordyn Woods at a party in Los Angeles.

Woods, 21, broke her silence about the scandal on an episode of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, and confirmed that although the professional athlete did kiss her, things did not go as far as some people thought. “[There was] no passion, no nothing,” she explained. “No tongue … no making out.”

Longtime family friend Larsa Pippen told Us Weekly exclusively that Kardashian is doing “great” in the wake of the drama. As for what the Good American cofounder has planned for the baby girl’s big day? Pippin, 44, could not reveal many details, but did say the party is “going to be so much fun.”

Jamie’s Lannister Has Thoughts About Most Popular Game of Thrones Theories

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has read your fan theories about how Game of Thrones ends, but says no one has come close to the true ending yet.

Coster-Waldau who plays Jaime Lannister on the HBO series stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night as part of the ongoing media blitz before the show’s eighth and final season kicks off on HBO on Sunday night. Host Jimmy Kimmel plied him with fan theories about how the show will end.

One popular theory is that Jaime will kill Cersei, his sister and baby mama who currently sits on Westeros’ Iron Throne. “That’s a theory,” the actor replied. “It makes sense though, if you think about it.” Another is that Arya Stark will use her unique set of skills to take on Jaime’s face and kill Cersei herself. “That would be cool, wouldn’t it?” he said in an impressive non-answer.

When Coster-Waldau was asked whether Jon Snow would become the Night King, he appeared baffled, simply asking, “How?” While his response to that particular theory makes it seem less likely, never forget Coster-Waldau is an excellent actor who is occasionally paid to look baffled.

Coster-Waldau has pored over some fan theories, but told Kimmel, “I’ve never read anyone who got the whole thing.”

As for the real ending, even Coster-Waldau didn’t see it coming. “When I read it the first time I was blown away,” he said. “I wrote Dan and David, the two creators, and I was like, ‘I really don’t know how you did it, but I can’t imagine a better way of ending the show.’”

Leather Jackets For Guys Who Aren’t Sure About Leather Jackets

Before the 1940s, leather motorcycle jackets were seen as culturally neutral, utilitarian garments. At the time, American motorcycle clubs were considered like any other social club — they were loosely organized associations through which young people could bond over shared interests. Taking part was considered a normal, healthy activity.

That all changed in the summer of 1947, when about 4,000 motorcycle enthusiasts roared into the small California farming town of Hollister. They came for the annual Gypsy Tour, a three-day carnival of races and field events held over a Fourth of July weekend. Hollister was completely unprepared for the attendees that summer, since nowhere near that number showed up to previous years’ carnivals, and consequently, the small rural community was thrown into chaos.

Over the course of three days and nights, bikers representing groups such as The 13 Rebels, The Pissed Off Bastards, and The Galloping Goose got drunk, brawled in the streets, smashed up bars and storefront windows, and participated in illegal drag races. They slept in haystacks, on sidewalks, and on people’s lawns. Hollister’s seven-man police force tried to keep things under control, but they mostly watched in horror as crazed, drunken crowds took over neighborhoods. By the end of the weekend, after state troopers were called in, about fifty bikers were arrested and sixty people were injured (one person had a skull fracture). The streets were awash in urine, beer bottles, and debris.

Shortly after, Life Magazine published a story about the event titled “Cyclist’s Holiday: He and Friends Terrorize Town.” One of the main photos was of a young biker, later believed to be Eddie Davenport, slouched astride his Harley Davidson, shirt open, and surrounded by broken beer bottles. He was wearing what looks to be a naval deck jacket, possibly a clue that he was one of the many ex-servicemen who joined motorcycle clubs after returning home from the Second World War. There’s some debate about whether media coverage afterward exaggerated the amount of violence and damage, but nevertheless, the event forever clouded the lens through which the non-riding public would see black leather jackets.

After 1947, black leather jackets became the second skin of rebels — a symbol anti-conformist lifestyles, restlessness, and lawlessness. Small town residents worried about motorcycle “hoodlums” and potential rampages. Marlon Brando cemented the image of the leather-clad rebel in his role in the 1953 film The Wild One. “Brando’s pebble-kicking stride, his insolent sneer, the rakish angle of his cap, and the casual straddle of his bike, identify him as a challenger of society’s values,” Bruce Boyer wrote in his book Rebel Style. “[The Wild One] clearly shows the opening chasm between the middle class, concerned with refinement and decorum, and the outsiders who show their disdain for the status quo.” The Twilight Zone later had an episode where three leather-jacket-wearing, motorcycle riding strangers invade a peaceful neighborhood (they were later revealed to be aliens). Leather jackets have been part of every rebel subculture since — bikers, rockers, and outlaws; beats and beatniks; modernists and mods; hippies and bohemians; punks and skinheads.

Those rebel associations hold remarkably strong today, even when conservative, establishment figures such as Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin wear black motorcycle jackets on TV talk shows. They’re also the reason why guys often pause when buying their first leather. They’re expensive, for one, and there’s always that nagging feeling that you might not be a “leather jacket kind of guy.” We like them because of their dark and dangerous associations, but worry that we’ll just end up looking like poseurs.

So, what to do if you’re interested in a leather jacket, but aren’t sure if the style is right for you? Like reading formality in suits and sport coats, there’s a language in leather jackets that can swing them towards different aesthetic directions. Whether you prefer something a little more fashionable and modern, or traditoinal and conservative, there’s assuredly something out there for you. Here are some things to consider:

Pick a General Style

The first thing to remember is that leather is like any other material, such as wool, cotton or linen. It can be used to make nearly any style of outerwear, from dressy to rugged, traditional to the avant-garde. Broadly speaking, most leather jackets will fall into one of two traditions:

Flight Jackets: Flight jackets were originally made for the hide-busting activity of piloting aircrafts, but civilians have been repurposing bombers for almost a hundred years. The original pilot jacket was the A-1. The American Air Force originally spec’d it in a lighter weight capeskin, then finished the collar, hem, and cuffs with a knitted trim. The style’s most distinguishable characteristics include the button-front, which runs from the hem to the collar, and the stand-up knitted collar that helps frame the face. The A-1, however, was only used for a few years before being replaced by the more familiar A-2.

During the Second World War, the US military issued thousands of A-2s to fighter pilots. The jacket’s design replaced the button-front of the A-1 with a zipper and storm flap, and then changed out the stand-up knitted collar in favor of a shirt-style leather collar. The shoulders were given passants; the hem and cuffs retained their windproof knitted trims. The A-2 is one of few clothing items that can legitimately be called iconic — for many, it is the leather jacket. Like most bomber styles, the traditional A-1 and A-2 have blousy, slightly rounded silhouettes, although they generally look great on most men regardless of age or fitness.

By virtue of its popularity, the A-2 is also so unobjectionable, it can border on boring, but a well-cut A-2 is a great entry point into leather jackets. The A-1 makes more of a statement while still hewing traditional. For something a little less common, you can hunt for a G-1 or MA-1. The G-1 started as the Navy version of the Army A-2, but while the Army version sometimes includes a detachable fur collar, the mouton (sheepskin) collar is standard on the G-1. The G-1 also omits passants and the storm flap, and it features button-through pockets rather than snap pockets. The MA-1, meanwhile, was originally a nylon, synthetic-fill, knit-collared jacket developed for the pilots. MA-1s became popular with punk rock kids and skinheads in the 1970s and early 1980s, and in leather form, they become a little more fashion forward.

Motorcycle Jackets: Classic leather jacket styles often come out of the very practical purpose of driving or piloting some large piece of machinery. For moto styles, the earliest forms were actually repurposed A-1s, which drivers used to wear over their suits and sport coats. But as motor vehicles improved in performance during the inter-war years, and more men drove them, there was greater demand for tougher garments and different styles. Soon, Harley Davidson started producing a variety of “genuine” motorcycle jackets, and big retailers such as Sears, Robuck & Co., Montgomery Ward, and JC Penney added a section of “sport leather jackets” to their catalogs.

This is when we start seeing things such as the double-rider and cafe racer. Double-riders derive from “lancer-front” motorcycle jackets, which feature a kind of double-breasted closure (where one side of the jacket overlaps with the other). Eventually, this style made it into asymmetrical zippered form, most iconically represented through Schott’s Perfecto (pictured on George above). Sometimes these styles have details such as snap-down passants, metal-buckled belts, D-shaped pockets, and fur collars. All things equal, the double-rider, particularly in black, is the most “aggressive” of all leather jacket styles, if only because of its connection to motorcycle culture and rock ‘n roll, but in softer leather forms, it’s also commonly used for fashion purposes.

If double riders are too much for you, try a cafe racer, which is notable for its visual minimalism. The style was originally worn on circular or oval race courses comprised of wooden planks, where oil slick tracks demanded some kind of protection. Racers often wore flimsy, tight fitting, unlined leather racing shirts, which at some point metamorphized into the famous Buco J-100 and eventually what we now call a cafe racer. The style is typically sculptured to give a close fit, although not as close as early 20th-century shirt-style versions, and features zippered body pockets, zippered sleeves, and a simple, symmetrical zip front. Some have a reverse box pleat at the back to allow for easier movement on a motorcycle, although it’s not uncommon to see a plain back on fashionable cafe racers.

Other Styles: Flight and motorcycle styles aren’t the only leathers.  There are about a dozen more that reach various categories. To run through a few.

  • Classic and Contemporary: Varsity jackets, baseball jackets, and trucker styles occasionally come in leather. These styles are traditionally made from softer materials, such as cotton or satin, but in leather, they can feel a little more rugged or luxurious, depending on the detailing. Generally speaking, these styles are better suited to classic or contemporary wardrobes.
  • Fencing: Adopted from a softer style of outerwear worn by fencers, leather fencing jackets usually have asymmetrical closures and a high collar. The style is much more avant-garde than what we normally write about here at Put This On, but goes well with dark, arte povera-inspired clothes from brands such as Rick Owens, Carol Christian Poell, and M.A+.
  • Workwear: Nearly every leather jacket roots back to some utilitarian design, but styles such as the grizzly jacket, field jacket, Cossack, and more unusual moto styles such as those inspired by the Belstaff Roadmaster are often more rugged than most.
  • Tailored: Mostly relics of the 1970s, styles such as the leather sports coat, leather trench, and three-quarters length leathers are true high-risk, low-reward items. It’s possible to wear these things well, but they require such specific requirements, it may be better to look for something else.

Tip: If you’re not sure about leather jackets, stick to the A-1, A-2, and cafe racer styles. Depending on their details, those can be more conservative and classic than most, making them suitable for casual offices and nights out on the weekend.

Pick a Material

The styles listed above are just the general templates for leather jacket design. The rest comes down to the material and detailing, which can swing a jacket towards different directions — classic or fashion-forward, dressy or rugged, aggressive or conservative. Let’s first start with the leather:

  • Lambskin: Typically the softest and lightest of all leathers, lambskins are supple and luxurious feeling. They usually have very little grain, which makes them very smooth (with some exceptions, such as Rick Owens’ blistered lamb). They can be a little fragile, but unless you’re actually piloting planes or riding motorcycles, they’re fine for most lifestyles. Just don’t, you know, go scraping this against a stucco wall.
  • Calfskin and Goatskin: A lot can depend on the tannery, but generally speaking, calfskins and goatskins are a little harder wearing than lambskin. They’re still fairly lightweight and supple, but they’re more tear resistant (although, at the same time, they don’t have the same buttery feel of lambskin). Calfskin is generally a smooth leather unless it’s been put through a finishing process. Goatskin, on the other hand, typically has a visible grain. Much like how Scotch and pebble grain shoes are a little more casual than calfskin footwear, goatskin leathers will also look a little less refined and dressy than lamb.
  • Cowhide and Horsehide: The toughest and hardest wearing of all leathers. Original flight and motorcycle jackets were typically made from these heavier leathers, as well as goatskin, so they could offer more protection and stand up to daily use. These leathers will generally develop more “character” over time, whereas lambskin looks best when it’s in like-new condition. Cowhide and horsehide are good for guys who really want to feel their jacket on their shoulders, have something they can wear in tougher environments, and see how the leather breaks in over time.
  • Suede: Almost any leather can be made into a suede. Sometimes it’s a reverse suede, which means it’s just the underside of a smoother leather; sometimes the top of a smoother leather has been sanded down to reveal its fiber core. Suede jackets are a nice way to add texture to an outfit, and they can look a little more approachable, but they stain easily and aren’t easy to clean. Be careful of getting one in a style that doesn’t lend itself well to patinas.

When choosing a style, think of how a jacket’s design template and material come together in a way that works for your lifestyle and wardrobe. A rugged jacket, such as a goatskin bomber or cowhide cafe racer, can be worn with jeans, fatigues, and workwear-styled chinos. Dressier, slightly more conservative designs, such as a lambskin A-2 or cafe racer, on the other hand, can be worn with tailored trousers and dress shirts. In the photo of the Stoffa jacket above, you can see what a difference lambskin can make even for the most rugged of all styles, the double rider. Suddenly, the jacket transforms into something else — less workwear, a little more refined.

Tip: Again, if you’re worried about whether a leather jacket can work for you, pick a softer, more approachable leather, such as lambskin, calfskin, or even suede. Those will generally look less “aggressive.” A heavier, more rugged leather such as cowhide, can be paired with a cafe racer or A-2 bomber style for a very classic look if you’re cautious about looking overly fashion forward.

Pay Attention to the Fit and Details

Lastly, pay attention to a jacket’s fit and detailing. A very traditional style, such as a cafe racer, can be modernized with a softer, lambskin leather, bell-shaped sleeves, slim-fit body, and long, diagonal chest zips, such as the Margiela jacket you see above. The same style can be made from a heavier leather, fitted with a traditional silhouette, and come with traditional detailing, such as an Aero Board Racer. The first will be more contemporary and easier to wear with both jeans and tailored trousers. The second is a little more classic and better suited to traditional combinations, such as jeans and t-shirts.

When shopping for your first leather jacket, think of how you plan to wear it. Do you need something with a lot of abrasion resistance, or do you plan to mostly wear this to the office? Would you characterize your wardrobe as classic or contemporary, rugged or refined? Do you want something that you can wear with both jeans and tailored trousers? Do you want something that patinas over time or something that stays looking fairly new and fresh? Will you wear this in the winter time or summer? Do you want something thick and heavy, or soft and light?

Once you have a sense of what you’re looking for, shop first at the brands or stores where you normally buy your other clothes. A trad-y guy in button-downs and flat front chinos may find his perfect leather at shops such as Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren. A guy who favors classic-contemporary clothes might want to look at the selection of Golden Bear and Valstar jackets at Mr. Porter and No Man Walks Alone. Workwear aficionados will probably like RRL, Fine Creek Leathers, and Schott.

Tip: Most guys will look good in a Valstarino, which is a citified, Italian version of a traditional American A-1 jacket. It’s a style that goes well with slim-straight jeans, flat front chinos, and even tailored trousers. It’s something you can wear to work and weekends, and it’s light enough for spring and fall. The silhouette is a little rounded, so if you prefer a slimmer look, try a cafe racer. Aero’s Board Racer is great with jeans, while Brooks Brothers often has racer styles that can be worn in more conservative environments. Todd Snyder, Enrico Mandelli, Taylor Stitch, Sandro, and Falcon Garments are also worth a look.

John Oliver and Janet From The Good Place Warn About Mobile Homes on Last Week Tonight

“Mobile homes were perfected by humans, but invented by snails,” explained John Oliver on Last Week Tonight. And because 20 million Americans live in mobile homes he focused Sunday night’s episode on them.

Mobile homes cost significantly less than conventional homes, making them one of the last few affordable housing options around. “It can be hard to tell the difference between mobile homes and manufactured homes,” Oliver said. “Just like it’s hard to tell the difference between Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard. The difference is, like a mobile home, Bryce Dallas Howard is assembled off-site, then placed on wheels and moved to her permanent location.”

Also like Howard and Chastain, mobile homes are popular—so popular that they have become a target for private equity firms, who have started purchasing mobile home sites. As Oliver put it: “The homes of some the poorest people in America are being snapped up by some of the richest people in America.” Mobile home parks have earned a lot of money for the Carlyle Group and Warren Buffett, who owns Clayton mobile homes, which made $ 911 million pre-tax dollars last year. Those unlikely bedfellows have led to conflict in the form of rising rents and fees that have left already impoverished Americans with even fewer options.

For mobile homes owners, the “cars you live in” are reportedly an investment that always go down in value. They are an even worse investment if you don’t own the land that the mobile home is parked on, because “mobile homes are mobile about as much king crabs are actually kings,” said Oliver.

That lack of mobility of tenants is attractive to investors, because they quite literally have a captive audience. As Frank Rolfe, a mobile home investor, put it, buying a mobile home park is like owning “a Waffle House where everyone is chained to the booths,” which Oliver suggested was a good idea for Jordan Peele’s next horror movie.

To warn people about the risks of investing in a mobile home, Oliver and The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden made an honest ad for potential home buyers.

Here’s what Angelina Jolie said about running for President

Exciting much?

Angelina jolie instagram debut

Angelina Jolie is one of the most talked about people in the world, and from her Academy Award winning acting roles and her motherhood skills to her humanitarian work, Ange has truly proven that she can do it all.

It’s hardly surprising therefore that people were quick to throw her hat into the ring as a presidential candidate.

While Angelina didn’t bat the rumours away, reportedly telling People ‘never say never’, when asked if she was running for office, it unfortunately doesn’t look like it’s on her to-do list now.

‘Right now I am looking to others for leadership,’ the humanitarian explained.

Angelina Jolie

Why? She’s got her hands full.

‘If you look across the world, there are far too many women and girls who are not only not seeing progress, their rights are slipping away from them,’ Angelina continued to tell People. ‘One of the things we are putting forward now is a proposal for a permanent international body to investigate war crimes, including mass rape and other sexual and gender-based violence.’

This isn’t the first time Angelina has been rumoured to be running for President, with the actress asked back in 2014 in an interview with Good Morning America if she would ever consider it.

Ange’s response? ‘You know, if I thought I’d be effective, I would. But I’m not sure if I would ever be taken seriously in that way, and be able to be effective.’

Well as Angelina said, never say never!
