It’s Finally Fall! Here’s Everything to Know About the Fall Equinox

Despite the fact that the pumpkin spice latte debuted this year in August, fall actually doesn’t begin until Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018. This day not only marks the unofficial start of sweater weather, it it also has a scientific significance: the autumnal equinox.

The equinox isn’t just a day, it’s a minute.

According to The Weather Channel, the autumnal equinox happens at 9:54 p.m. EDT, marking the official end of summer and the beginning of fall. During that minute, the sun crosses the Earth’s equator from the Northern Hemisphere into the Southern Hemisphere and day and night last the exact same amount of time — 12 hours — everywhere across the world.

So why does this happen? Throughout the year, the earth tilts on its axis at a diagonal away from or toward the sun, causing the change in seasons. During the equinox, it becomes momentarily perfectly perpendicular, meaning the sun’s rays pass directly over the equator. Following that minute, the Northern hemisphere begins to tilt away from the sun leading to shorter days and cooler temperatures. It also causes a shift in the jet stream, which affects weather patterns.

Equinoxes happen twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, while the solstices occur once in the summer and once in the winter. During an equinox, the sun is at the closest distance to the equator, while during a solstice it is the furthest distance away.

Michael Phelps Opens Up About Retirement and Mental Health Awareness: ‘I Struggle Through Problems Just Like Everybody Else’

Now, when 28-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps swims butterfly, it’s usually for an audience of one. When his 2-year old son Boomer waves his arms in imitation of the stroke, he knows what the toddler wants to see. “He knows the motion of the butterfly,” says Phelps. “So I do a couple of laps.”

Since leaving competitive swimming after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Phelps has been enjoying retirement in Arizona with his wife Nicole and sons Boomer and Beckett, seven months. He’s also become an advocate for water conservation (he’s in his second year as global water ambassador for Colgate, working to remind people to turn off the faucet while brushing their teeth) and mental health awareness, and has openly discussed his struggle with depression.

“For me to know there are a lot of people out there in the world who are struggling the same exact way I do still struggle and have struggled — I’m a human being. But I was so used to compartmentalizing everything,” he says. “Being an athlete you’re supposed to be this strong person who doesn’t have weaknesses, doesn’t have any problems. No, that’s wrong. I struggle through problems just like everybody else does. I wanted to open up and just talk about it. It is what makes me who I am.”

Phelps says he now sees the “red flags popping up when I’m starting to go down that path,” and knows when to reach out to his wife or therapist. “Communication is something I really just learned, just to be completely wide open,” he says. “I joke that I learned how to communicate when I’m 30. But I did. And it’s better late than never.”

Those skills are making the connections he has with the U.S. national swim team stronger as well; he admits that at the first of his five Olympic Games, he probably wasn’t as approachable as he was during his last Olympics in Rio. “I think it’s crazy that in the four previous Games people did not reach out to me because I was probably a little different, and hard to approach then,” he says. “But going into [the 2016 Games] I was able to kind of relax, let my guard down a little bit and enjoy the experience. It was the first time I ever talked to everybody on the national team. That might be why I’m being approached more, and I like that. I want to help continue to grow the sport.”

It’s a new role for Phelps, who welcomes the responsibility, and applauds other athletes who are using their visible positions to advocate for issues that are important for them. “For me, to be able to have that power, to have people listen to you and to open up and speak about things that are important to me whether that is mental health or saving water; that’s amazing,” he says. “I never thought people would sit and listen to me, or care about what I was saying. It’s pretty incredible to have that voice and be able to spread my message as loud as I can to get people to really open up, understand what is actually going on and what we are doing to the world we live in, no matter what it is.”

Just don’t expect him to be racing again at the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. Now, he just laps the pool as an escape. “It’s the only time it’s peaceful, quiet and I can escape in my own head and let go of whatever I need to let go of,” he says. “I always thought of myself as a swimmer and that’s it. Now I try to think of myself more as a human. And that’s a good way to live.”

Here’s why everyone’s talking about Brad and Angelina’s ‘secret face to face meetings’

But what does it all mean?

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Credit: REX

Despite filing for divorce 27 months ago, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt‘s custody battle is still ongoing – yes, really.

When Angelina Jolie originally filed for primary physical custody of their six children back in 2016, Brad Pitt kept a relatively low profile, and although we knew they were disputing over custody in court, little news has since emerged.

Then three months ago, the former couple’s divorce took a turn, with a court order issued over the custody of Maddox, 16, Pax, 14, Zahara, 13, Shiloh, 12, and 9-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

The verdict? Angelina was reportedly required to give Brad more access to their children and help improve their relationship, with Brad given unrestricted phone rights and summer visitation.

Then it all got very messy, with Angelina claiming that Brad had yet to pay any meaningful child support, and Brad’s team calling it ‘a thinly-veiled effort to manipulate media coverage’.

This week however it emerged that the Pitt-Jolies could be moving forward, with it reported that the former couple had seen each other in ‘secret face to face meetings’.

The topic of these meetings? Well, according to Entertainment Tonight, they have focused on co-parenting amicably, with both parties reportedly keen to do what’s best for their children.

‘Brad and Angelina actually set up a secret meeting at her house,’ the source added. ‘It’s the first time they have truly gotten together to make things work since their group therapy with the children.’

And the verdict? ‘Brad and Angie’s meeting was a success. They are going to stay with the plan set forth through the courts.’

‘Angelina decided it was time to try to make things work and Brad was relieved and very ready for the offer,’ the source concluded. ‘Brad has been dedicated to making peace throughout the process and now it finally seems like they are at a point where they can create a calmer situation for the kids.’

Well, that sounds like it’s good news all around.

Actually good movies about traveling you need to watch

If you love seeing the world or want to be inspired to travel, then watching movies about traveling is a must. They can be the best way to relive your own experiences or think about where you’re going to book a ticket for next. The possibilities are endless. But there are so many movies out there that claim to be the ‘ultimate’ travel movie – so which one is the best? Well, here are our top five that definitely need to be added to your watch-list.

Into the Wild

Okay, so full disclosure (and spoiler) – this movie doesn’t end very well. But the whole concept behind the movie is utterly beautiful. This story is based on a true story and follows the life of Christopher McCandless, who graduates from college and leaves his life, and money behind in search of a simpler life full of nature and travel. He travels through America and eventually finds his way to his last resting place – Alaska. The scenes are beautiful and make us realize that simple lives aren’t the end of the world.

The Motorcycle Diaries

The Motorcycle Diaries follows the life of Che Guevara during his youth. Set in South America, we embark on a journey with Che through deserts, across grassy plains and into the depths of the rainforest to find his life’s calling. The movie will inspire you to find your own life’s calling, and travel as far and wide as possible to figure it out – because the world is truly magnificent.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Although this movie was dubbed a flop – it has since received a hugely positive reaction, and many people have taken the advice of the lead character. This movie centers around Walter Mitty, a middle-aged professional who hates his job, hates his life and constantly dreams of a more adventurous life; like the photographer he is constantly in contact with. So he goes in search of his friend, travels across continents, and visits different countries and cities. The most beautiful part of this movie is that he truly finds himself and comes out of his shell.

The Way

Just to warn you: this movie will definitely make you cry. But also inspire you. The Way follows the life of Tom – an American man whose son dies while walking the Camino trail. In order to pick up his son’s ashes, he has to travel to France. However, he decides to finish off what his son started and hiked the trail himself. He covers the incredible ground, learns so much along the way and makes lifelong friends that completely change his outlook on life.

Wild

Whether you like or dislike Reese Witherspoon films usually, this movie is a must-see. Wild focuses on Cheryl Strayed whose life has turned to pieces – she is a drug addict, her mother has just died, and she has no control over her destiny. To try and get her head together, she hikes the Pacific Crest Trail to reset herself and finally come to terms with what she wants in life.

All About Trinity, ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s Villainous Organisation

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

It wasn’t looking too good for Lara Croft and her Tomb Raider series at the turn of the decade. The series’ nineties heyday was a distant memory and the most recent Xbox 360/PS3 era trilogy had been blown out of the water by the arrival of Nathan Drake and Uncharted. Like so many great nineties heroes, Lara’s time appeared done.

There’s no way you could have guessed then that in 2018 we’d be heralding Shadow of the Tomb Raider as one of the most anticipated games of the year. But here we are.

Following the brilliant reboot in 2013, an even better follow-up arrived in 2015 under the name Rise of the Tomb Raider. Now, Shadow of the Tomb Raider rounds out what has been dubbed the Survivor Trilogy and boy is it going big. Like apocalypse big. Lara removes a Mayan dagger from its resting place in Mexico, setting off a chain of events that will lead to the death of the sun.

It’s all Trinity’s fault, of course. Lara only removes the dagger because she knows the Order of Trinity is after it and – given past experiences – she can only assume it’s for evil deeds. They are evil Trinity, aren’t they? Let’s recap the story so far.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Lara has made a little “end of the world” mistake in her new game

Trinity is Over 1,000 Years Old

The earliest recorded evidence of The Order of Trinity dates back to 978AD, although it is believed the organisation is far older than that. It’s generally accepted that Trinity is funded by the Vatican as its secret military wing. Its goal is to ensure God has full command over the people of Earth.

Trinity’s mission therefore became to hunt down any artifacts with supernatural powers that could be used to defy what it decided was God’s will. Not only that, Trinity is also charged with eradicating any civilization that’s made use of these artifacts. These civilizations are considered heretics.

Members of Trinity are staunchly monotheistic, able to look past the path of violence and destruction left in their wake believing they are doing God’s work. An approach upheld by the leader of Trinity’s High Council, Pedro Dominguez.

One such civilisation Trinity managed to bury was blossoming in the Siberian city of Kitezh. It was here that the Deathless Prophet of Constantinople had run to hide after he had used the Divine Source to make his followers immortal. Naturally, use of such a powerful artifact had gained the ire of Trinity.

Trinity itself is not formally acknowledged, with its existence kept secret at all costs. Despite having unlimited resources and money, the number of actual Trinity members is small and exclusive. To keep themselves secret, most of their work is undertaken by hired mercenaries.

Lara vs Trinity
With Trinity, Lara usually fires first and asks questions later

How Trinity Found Lara

It wasn’t actually Lara, but her father Richard, who first came to the attention of Trinity. Following the death of Lara’s mother in a plane accident, Richard got lost in his research seeking what he called the Immortal Soul. This was in fact the Divine Source and soon enough Pedro Dominguez got worried his research would unearth not only the history of Kitezh, but also the existence of Trinity.

Dominguez sent Trinity agent Ana to infiltrate Richard’s life and monitor his research. When she was unable to turn him away from his path to exposing Trinity, Dominguez ordered his assassination. Trinity then used its power in the media to discredit the Croft family name.

Years later a fresh-faced Lara finished her university degree and signed up to be part of the archaeological reality TV show Whitman’s World. Her journey took her to the island of Yamatai.

Tomb Raider Amazon
Deep in the Amazon, Lara will meet her toughest challenge yet

Trinity on Yamatai

Of course, Yamatai was already on Trinity’s radar well before Lara set foot on the island at the start of the first game. It had once housed an ancient Japanese civilization who had a powerful artifact called the Star Phenomenon that, on the behest of the Sun Queen, could control the weather.

The island had been lost to time, but it was rediscovered during World War II. A Trinity agent infiltrated a Nazi science team sent to examine the island, potentially sabotaging their mission to acquire the Star Phenomenon. A second agent also arrived on the island decades later to join the ragtag gang of washed up survivors led by Mathias.

While Trinity was never explicitly identified as the antagonist in the 2013 reboot, Lara does come across mentions of the mysterious order. There’s a radio message broken by static, and various documents Lara finds, which reference Trinity. But she is at a loss as to who they actually are.

Upon her survival and return home, Lara is surprised when her experiences are so strongly discredited. Trinity is behind it, of course, and also goes back to the island to destroy any evidence of the Sun Queen and the Star Phenomenon.

Trinity and the Divine Source

In the wake of Yamatai, Lara decides to dedicate herself to restoring the family name. She picks up her father’s research and takes it further. She unearths the secret hiding spot of Kitezh and the location of the Divine Source. Knowing she is getting close, Dominguez orders Lara’s assassination.

Lara survives, but her assailant escapes with all her discoveries, leading Trinity to the location of the Deathless Prophet – known at this time as Jacob. Thus begins the bulk of the gameplay for Rise of the Tomb Raider.

It’s only at the end of the game that Lara begins to understand the full depth of Trinity’s influence on the world. Ana, now outed as a Trinity agent, admits that Lara’s father was assassinated.

Ana is not to be trusted!

Trinity’s Mayan Adventure

Pedro Dominguez’s personal interest has always been in the Mayan culture and its powerful artifacts. When Lara gets wind that Trinity has located a ceremonial Mayan Dagger in Mexico, she rushes to the location to beat them to it. Unfortunately, in removing the dagger, she sets in process the end of the world, beginning with a series of natural disasters.

In order to stop what she has started, she heads to the Amazon. Here we get into the heart of the new game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. In the Amazon, Lara will not only have to stop the death of the sun and the extinction of life on Earth. But she’ll also get to face-off against Pedro Dominguez and get her revenge.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

‘Outward’ is a Tense RPG That’s All About the Dangers of Using Magic

Dark Souls is often referred to as an elaborate form of self-harm. It’s not a very funny a joke, nor particularly clever, but the reason behind it is quite clear. Dark Souls frustrating difficulty curve and ambiguous guidance can feel more painful than enjoyable, especially when coupled with its unforgiving death mechanic that can have you lose so much potential experience for failure.

Then there is Outward, which on the surface might sound like just another “Souls-like” game: a tough as nails high fantasy action RPG with a dark setting. But Outward is more than another clone of the iconic series. For starters, the game goes to no end to tell you that you’re not special. You’re not the Chosen Undead, the Bearer of the Curse or the Ashen One, you’re just some guy. Sure you might have magic, but lots of people in Outward have magic, it doesn’t make you special.

Knowing all this, I still elected to play as a Sigil, Outward’s version of spell caster when I got hands on at Gamescom last month. Like so many wizard classes, Sigil’s are glass cannons: incapable of taking much damage but able to deal an incredible amount. But unlike your typical fireball thrower, Sigils have to draw wards on the ground to augment their simple spells into something formidable.

It is in these moments you can see where Dark Souls and Outward diverge from each other. Combat in Dark Souls is about reacting and adapting to whatever situation you find yourself in, while Outward is about preparing for what’s coming, and being aware of the situation. Backpacks in Outward will slow you down during a fight so it’s sensible to drop them before engaging, but then you’ll have to make sure you’ve got you need in your pockets. For a Sigil, wards need to be prepared, but for the other classes there are other considerations to make.

More so then that, while fans of Dark Souls might jokingly compare its difficulty to self-harm, Outward introduces it as an unintentional consequence for the unprepared.

UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCES

Outward

During my brief time with the game, I spied some bandits hiding in a cave. I set my backpack down and prepared a fire ward on the floor. This particular ward transforms a simple spark spell, useful for lighting torches, into powerful fireballs that I hoped would dispatch the enemies quickly. Confident I was ready, I got their attention by shooting one in the back, which unfortunately didn’t kill him like I had hoped. The thugs closed in much quicker than I expected, and when they got close enough to hit me with their swords, I panicked and cast a shield spell.

Outward is about preparation, and a clever player would have worked out an escape plan should things start to go wrong. A smarter decision might have been to retreat, preparing a lightning ward that can be used as a trap and taking back the advantage. But I didn’t. I cast a shield spell. Normally this would coat me in a protective aura, but I hadn’t stepped off the fire warding.

So what was meant to protect me, instead set my skin alight and destroyed my health bar.

TRY TO AVOID SELF-IMMOLATION

It was a brief moment in the game, lasting perhaps a minute from when I spied the bandits to when they watched my charred body slump over, but it couldn’t have revealed more about the philosophy of the game.

By rooting the combat system into a need to prepare beforehand, Outward breaks away from other ‘Souls-like’ games by not just relying on quick reflexes. Sure, you’ve got to be able to react quickly in Outward, but assuming that will get you through every encounter is a good way of turning up dead.

Outward’s complex combat and magic system create a threatening, dangerous and unpredictable environment. Players can’t just run in and hope for the best, nor can they simply rely on a good weapon and familiar strategy: plans can backfire, literally. Outward has players think carefully before and during an engagement, much like the more serious military shooters, except with magic, swords and self-immolation and not some boringly named assault rifle.

When I panicked, I didn’t even realise I was still standing on the ominous, glowing red symbols of the fire ward. I thought I was being smart, and resourceful by quickly throwing up a shield to protect myself. But its more than simply being aware of where the enemies are, its more than simply being aware where you are too. You have to learn what the outcome of preparation and actions are, and remember it.

MORE THAN A SOULS-LIKE

Outward is an inventive take on the action RPG, demonstrating an understanding into what players want to find challenging that so many “Souls-like” miss. Enemies are tough, but it is the deep, mysterious combat system that will keep players invested when the full game releases early next year. While Outward might appear familiar on paper, it feels completely fresh for the genre. The magic system is inventive, and surprising, with even small encounters being challenging and strategic.

The punishing combat doesn’t just end with a bad spell and an unpleasant death either. Outward takes you further then a simple loading screen and a chance to try again. If you are defeated, a lot of things might happen to you, they’re rarely good, but they’re rarely just trying again. Bandits might enslave you, or rob and leave you for dead, monsters might drag you deeper into their liars or try and feed you to their young. From there its back up to you to get out and keep going, continuing the adventure rather than resetting it. This means that even the biggest mistakes, like setting yourself on fire, won’t be as frustrating as bouncing off the same fight and sitting through the loading screen over and over again.

Outward is a small game with big ambitions. Rewriting the way that combat, death and preparations work in action RPGs, this is a game that looks set to carry the torch forward from where Dark Souls planted it all those years ago.

Iina Koppinen: Writing and speaking – and thoughts about these

OHMYGOSSIP –  I’ve been sick, the flu for the whole week now! The stubborn one!  When I was getting better – then I had to do some stressful things.. and I was sick again.  And I’ve felt that I’am doing all in a complicated way this week.  And I hate difficulties! So, this week I haven’t been even in my thoughts in a right place at the right time.  Just been hoping that I’ve been in a right place at the wrong time or at the wrong place at the right time, with my thoughts and things had to be done.  I’ve been running around and preparing those upcoming exhibitions.  The whole week I’ve had this Albert Einstein quote in my mind “Everything must be made as simple as possible.  But not simpler.”, because last week I watched one document about him.

Creative work itself is a balanced whole, elements should support each other.  When one detail takes an attention away from the combination- then the work ain’t having the balance, which must have it to be successful.

There are good days and sometimes bad days.  My major work was trying to get distraction and bad feeling from my mind.  Days like these come to us sometimes – challenging days..

I’ve been thinking lately – why I chose to be a blog writer about my visual work, mostly. Maybe one reason – it keeps me confident, when I speak about art.  And it’s relaxing to write – makes things so much easier to express – and writing is also keeping motivation in visual art. I also want to be a better writer.  So, there are couple of good things, why to write, and how it works with me.

It’s a thin line between professional writing and diary- style blog text, this is my opinion.

In any case, good writing is quite simple in it’s structure and interesting combined with information.  There are many kind of texts as there are writers.  Simplicity doesn’t mean to limit things, just opening them up more easy.  I often should remember to rely on that big picture – doesn’t need to explain and open everything.

I use to work mostly alone – sometimes in the long run, the motivation to keep up working is somehow required.  Naturally maintaining will include all aspects of life and minimizing disturbing factors.  It is important to me the working environment is pleasant and clean.  And raising all the good and joyful things on the table, it gives me energy.

photo Iina Koppinen | selfie | 2018

photo Iina Koppinen | espresso and tea with a friend | 2018

I have had a problem – when things go wrong or feel I fail in something, I tend to feel hypersensitive panic and this can have a huge impact on how I feel about myself.  Through personal reflection I began to realize that it wasn’t always the situation that was affecting me but more the way in which I was internalising.  With this keeping in my mind – I decided to turn how I was viewing life’s challenges by seeing them less as obstacles and more like valuable life lessons to help me to learn and grow.  I admit this isn’t the easiest thing to do, but if I can’t change what happens in my life then I can change how respond to it.

This kind simplifying is sometimes difficult, but when I reach it – even in some parts – I notice that there are many things, topics of the days – to achieve a calm, peaceful and a happy day, almost every day.  And doing so, there’s no reason to panic even in those areas of work, which are challenging and perhaps feeling like obstacles.  This digitizing world might confuse our conventional thinking.  I don’t want to be confused or break in pieces whatever I do.  I want always reach my goals.

photo Iina Koppinen | work in progress – new wallpapers | contrast on a wall |2018

Simplicity is also to know who you are, and doing it bravely.  As a concrete example – I’ve been asked why my Instagram account is full of different pictures and photos?  Why there’s not the clear line at the moment.. It doesn’t show only my visual art or who I am as a person – it also reflects how my motivation grows, where ideas come from and how they are ultimately bound up as a visual work.

I know the main topic should be the highlight, and now – almost a year after I started my account, I’am trying to solve, how to make the feed look better, but I hope I can keep in style, which looks myself.

Understanding the emphasizing own strength can only make positive impact!

Have a nice day where ever you are!

Ciao, lovelies

xx

Iina

Rob Wilson Talks About The Importance Of Leaving A Will

People have been buzzing since news broke that Aretha Franklin left her $ 80 million estate without a will. Financial expert, Rob Wilson says she’s not the only one, Prince, James Brown, Tupac, and Martin Luther King, didn’t leave wills either.

Financial expert Rob Wilson says the main reasons people don’t leave a will is “procrastination” or they “just don’t want to talk about it.” Also because they just don’t understand and, “it’s easier to just not do it then to face something that you’re not familiar with.”

Kym asks if it’s possible for someone to destroy your will and then say that you don’t have one. Wilson says it is possible, that’s why it’s so important to have it notarized and “make sure your doctor and attorney have a copy.”

There are even more things you can put in place that Wilson discusses in a free ebook on estate planning called Control Your Legacy. You can download it at http://www.robwilson.tv/legacy

Shan’ann Watts Brother ‘Always Worried About Her and the Girls’ But ‘Couldn’t Protect Them’

The younger brother of Shan’ann Watts says that he had always worried about his big sister and her daughters living in Colorado, because he wouldn’t be around to keep them from harm.

In an emotional statement read aloud at Shan’ann’s funeral, Frankie Rzucek remembered his big sister as being an ambitious, loving woman who couldn’t wait to become a mom.

From a young age, I always knew my sister was going to be successful — and nothing would stand in her way,” Rzucek’s statement read.  “She was born to be a mother. Boy, was she ready! Closets were full even before she knew she was pregnant. She couldn’t wait. She was my mom, times ten — whether either one of them wanted to admit it. She had ambition in her eyes and wanted a great life for her children and herself.”

Rzucek went on to say that his sister excelled at motherhood. “They were always well-dressed and well mannered,” he wrote. “She taught them to be brave and independent, just like Shan’ann. She was very successful and independent, before any man came along — and that’s just the way she wanted it.”

But despite Shan’ann’s independence, Rzucek was always concerned about the distance between them.

“I always worried about her and the girls being so far because I couldn’t protect them,” he wrote. “Growing up, she was a perfect role model. She had a lot of friends and was very popular, which made it hard for me being her little brother trying to protect her from heartbreak and other things. She moved out at 18 and never looked back.”

Frankie did not mention Shan’ann’s husband, Chris Watts, who is accused of murdering his entire family. He has previously lashed out at Chris, calling him a “heartless psychopath” and saying that he “stole my whole world.”

Chris Watts has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder as well as other charges in the deaths of his wife and two daughters, Bella, 4. and Celeste, 3. He is being held without bond at the Weld County Jail. He has not yet entered a plea.

In an interview with police, Chris Watts claimed that he only strangled his wife after he saw her on the baby monitor strangling their two children — a claim that police have said they do not believe.

As the case against Chris Watts continues, Shan’ann’s family continues to mourn the woman who seemed to have the life everyone envied. “She was ready to take on the world, and we know she did,” Frankie Rzucek concluded in his statement. “I love you always, your brother, Frankie.”

N.K. Jemisin Just Made History at The Hugo Awards—Here are 7 Facts About Her

If you don’t know who N.K. Jemisin is, now is the time to get familiar with her. She is the force that’s currently taking the science fiction world by storm, winning the genre’s most prestigious prize—the 2018 Hugo Award for best novel—for the third time in a row, this past Sunday. It’s only a matter of (a hopefully short) time before her Broken Earth trilogy of books hits the screen, propelling her to a household name as recognizable as J.K. Rowling or J.R.R. Tolkien. She won the 2018 Best Novel Hugo Award for the third novel in her Broken Earth series, The Stone Sky.

When the term “science fiction author” is mentioned, images of white male writers most likely spring to mind, as they have traditionally dominated the genre. But the genre today is much more diverse with black authors gaining rapid ground and women authors claiming their place too. Just this year alone, several other women authors received Hugo awards for best short story, best novella, and best series. And another black science fiction author, Nnedi Okorafor, picked up a non-Hugo Award for the best young adult book for her novel, Akata Warrior and was nominated for the 2018 Hugo in the novella category. In 2016, Okorafor was the first Nigerian to win the Hugo Award for her novella, Binti.

Jemisin’s three-streak win is being hailed as a defiant triumph in the face of an alt-right extremist subculture within the science fiction fantasy world, which has a history of being proudly racist and reluctant to diversify the space. It can even be seen as a beacon of hope amid the nation’s current racial climate.

As Jemisin continues her reign, here are some fun facts that will get you up to speed on the powerhouse who says she’s not interested in living up to the racist and sexist status quo of the science fiction realm.

  • Nora K. Jemisin made history as the first writer ever to win the prestigious Hugo Award three times in a row with her Broken Earth trilogy of books.
  • She is the first black author to ever win the Hugo Award in the best novel category for The Fifth Season, a post-apocalyptic tale and commentary on society and race relations.
  • The Fifth Season is currently being developed as a TV drama series for the TNT network, with Leigh Dana Jackson penning the adaptation, according to Deadline.
  • Her Broken Earth trilogy series of books, as well as her other novels, draws on the human history of structural oppression, and her feelings about this moment in American history.

Andrew McCutchen deal comes amid questions about Aaron Judge

NEW YORK — It finally happened. But what took so long? With slugging superstar Aaron Judge still ailing and languishing on the disabled list because of a broken bone in his wrist, the New York Yankees made a move late Thursday night that should have come weeks ago. Welcome to the Bronx, Andrew McCutchen. Now come get the pinstripes you ought to have been wearing since the last day of July. As Judge continues to recover from a chip fracture in his right wrist, the Yankees have agreed to a trade with the San Francisco Giants for McCutchen, a source told ESPN’s Buster Olney. McCutchen, a 31-year-old, five-time All-Star outfielder, will bolster the Yankees’ offense and defense until their big power-hitting, hard-throwing, 26-year-old right fielder can come back. And when that will be remains anybody’s guess. Consider the following five words from manager Aaron Boone’s pregame news conference…

They Died Without Wills: What Aretha Franklin and Prince Taught Us About Estate Planning

Aretha Franklin, Prince—both among the most influential artists of all time. And they had something else in common: Both died without leaving a will.

Under local state laws, Franklin’s assets would be divided up among her children. However, as The Detroit Free Press reports, because of copyrights, published songs, and other intellectual property Franklin’s estate could end up becoming a hotly contested court battle waged by many parties and one that could be litigated for years.

One has to wonder what Prince would think about the public spectacle that surrounded his estate, which was estimated to be worth about $ 300 million.

The music icon worked so hard during his life to protect his privacy, and now the details of his assets, and more importantly the possibility that he did not create a plan for them after his passing have cast his financial life into a spotlight that he tried so desperately to avoid.

“I think Prince simply thought he had time,” says Lori Anne Douglass, an estate-planning attorney at Moses & Singer in New York.

“For someone who worked so hard to be private and maintain control of his own music, it doesn’t make sense that he gave up his power in this way. The most important thing we learned from Prince is that you simply never know when you’re going to die,” she adds.

Douglass points out that while so much discussion centered around the fact that Prince didn’t have a will, a trust would have allowed him to protect his privacy. That information is private, whereas the content of wills is public.

The fact is, Prince and Franklin, like the rest of us, were human. We are not wired to focus on estate planning. According to Legalzoom.com, nearly 70% of blacks in the United States die without a will.

When you consider, however, that a significant portion of wealth is passed through generations, you begin to understand the significance of creating a plan for your assets when you move on, and some of the challenges our community has had when it comes to building wealth.

That lack of planning is a crisis wrote Earl G. Graves Sr., founder and publisher of Black Enterprise.

“Not only does this put our ability to transfer wealth to future generations at risk, it also comes at a tremendous cost,” he wrote. “Without an estate plan, your assets fall subject to probate. According to one estate planning firm, probate costs surviving families a collective $ 2 billion annually–including more than $ 1.5 billion in attorney fees. Dying intestate (passing away without a valid will) not only blocks the transfer of wealth; it can leave a crippling financial burden to your heirs.”

“What’s at stake? How about more than $ 1 trillion in black spending power? How much of that are we willing to lose to probate, estate taxes, and other costs we need to plan for? What about the homes and other real estate we’ve acquired, and our investment portfolios, including retirement plans and other savings? What about the nearly 2 million businesses owned by African Americans? How can we say we are doing our very best for future generations while leaving all of this, and more, unprotected and at risk?”

For many of us, the hardest part of estate planning is figuring out how to begin. Douglass says the first step is to think about what happens as people die, and to consider the fact that we are all living longer, and likely to become incapacitated in some way at some point in our lives.

“The first step is getting your disability documents in order through a healthcare proxy and power of attorney. You can get statutory forms on your state’s website,” says Douglass.

The person you appoint to make healthcare decisions is called ‘the agent.’ You are ‘the principal.’ Unless you limit your agent’s authority, in most cases, they have the power to make any medical decisions you would make on your behalf.

“When beginning your estate planning, it’s also important to make sure that you have the correct beneficiary designations on things like employer benefits–401 (k)’s and insurance,” says Douglass.

In addition, when you start the estate planning process, you should consult an attorney so that you understand how the different aspects of your plan should come together. Douglass suggests seeking out a free consultation, which can at least result in guidance and affordable recommendations.

Bold Moves to End Sexual Violence: Three Tips for Talking About Prevention

Ms. is a proud media sponsor of the 2018 National Sexual Assault Conference, co-hosted by the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. This year’s NSAC theme is “Bold Moves: Ending Sexual Violence in One Generation.” Leading up to the event, we’ll be posting pieces by presenters and major speakers highlighting their plans to make those moves right here on the Ms. blog. Click the banner image above or this link for more Bold Moves posts.

It’s tough to talk about sexual harassment, misconduct and abuse. Despite our best efforts, sometimes prevention gets lost in translation.

Once they get engaged, it’s easy for people to understand the individual actions they can take to be a better bystander, take personal responsibility, participate in self-defense classes or have one-on-one conversations about actions and behaviors. But prevention must go beyond education and individual behavior change. We don’t live in a vacuum: We’re connected to groups, communities, organizations and institutions, and these structures have the power to create safe environments and help change the way our society views sexual violence and our responsibility to prevent it.

Efforts to prevent and stop sexual violence are underway in communities across the country—and while it’s not always clear that our small actions can result in big cultural changes, prevention is possible, and it’s happeningTalking about the progress we have made is also challenging—and that’s why RALIANCE teamed up with the Berkeley Media Studies Group to release a new report to guide individuals on how to talk about prevention

Here are four key highlights.

#1: Messages are never first.

The first step is knowing what you want to change, how to change it and why it needs to be changed. Your mission comes before your message—then you dig in to expressing it.

#2: Messages have to be flexible.

There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to a strategic communications plan—from the specific strategy, to messenger and audience. All of this is also set against a political or cultural backdrop that changes.

#3: Your messenger is just as important as your message.

For a messenger to be persuasive, the audience has to identify with and trust them. (General rules for the road? Speak plainly and think about word choices and lingo. Focus on conduct, not character when talking about people who commit sexual abuse and assault.)

Ready for a test drive? Learn more about simple tips and tools in the messaging guide. Be a part of ending sexual violence in one generation! It’s on all of us to make prevention understandable.

Here’s What You Need To Know Now About Prostate Cancer

Dr. Eric Griggs, or “Doc Griggs” as he’s called, is a New Orleans based community medicine doctor and health educator. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and Tulane University School of Medicine. His mantra is “Get checked. Get fit. Get moving!”

Charlie Hill is a retired executive vice president, human resources for Landmark Media Enterprises. He earned a Bachelor’s in Economics from Virginia State College and a MBA degree from Hampton University. The governor of Virginia recently appointed Hill to a second four-year term as a member of Virginia State University’s Board of Visitors.  He’s a proud Virginia State alum and a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, inc.

Mr. Hill was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002 and he prefers to be called a warrior versus a survivor.

WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER?

Prostate cancer starts in the cells of the prostate gland. The prostate is a sex gland in men that sits just below the bladder. It’s about the size of a walnut. It wraps around the tube called the urethra, which carries urine out of the bladder to exit the body. Prostate Cancer is the uncontrollable and excessive growth of cells in the gland.

WHO IS AT RISK FOR PROSTATE CANCER?

Nearly 2 of every 3 prostate cancers are found in men 65 and older. As a man gets older, his chance of getting prostate cancer increases. African-American men are also more than twice as likely to die of prostate cancer as white men. But in recent years, death rates have gone down faster in African-American men than in white men. Older Black men whose father or a brother has been diagnosed are at greatest risk.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PROSTATE CANCER?

Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. Men who have prostate cancer can be symptom-free for years. But as it grows, prostate cancer can cause some symptoms. Men should see a health care provider if they:

  • Have to urinate often, especially at night
  • Have trouble starting or stopping urine flow
  • Have a weak or slow urine flow
  • Have blood in the urine or semen
  • Feel frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or ribs

WHAT OFTEN PREVENTS SUCCESSFUL EARLY DETECTION AND TREATMENT FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN?

Prostate cancers are less likely to be detected in the early stages among African-Americans because research shows they are generally less likely to have health insurance and have less access to health care. African-American men are less trustful of their physicians than are white men, less likely to see the same doctor each time they go a visit or care, and less likely to be screened for prostate cancer.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROSTATE SCREENING RECOMMENDATIONS?

Promote knowledge of early detection through awareness and educational activities that focus on the benefits and potential harms of PSA testing and wellness involving diet, nutrition, exercise, weight control, psychosocial and cultural sensitivities starting at age 35. Baseline PSA testing for men of African descent and other men deemed to be at high-risk for prostate cancer is suggested beginning at age 40 for predicting their risk of prostate cancer.

WHAT IS THE 100 BLACK MEN OF AMERICA ORGANIZATION DOING TO ENGAGE MEN AND ENCOURAGE EARLY DETECTION?

All 100 Black Men of America Chapters are being encouraged to host at least one prostate cancer awareness/educational event annually. This means the 100 chapter network is fully engaged in educating men across the country on the benefits of prostate cancer early detection, diagnosis and treatment options.

HOW LONG DOES A PROSTATE EXAM TAKE AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD MEN GET THE EXAM?

Men should make individualized decisions to be tested and examined based on their risk factors after discussion with their health care provider. The exam takes no longer that a few seconds.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MEN GET A PROSTATE EXAM?

Baseline PSA testing for men of African descent and other men deemed to be at high-risk for prostate cancer is suggested beginning at age 40 for predicting their risk of prostate cancer.

IF YOU HAVE A HISTORY OF CANCER IN YOUR FAMILY, SHOULD YOU GET CHECKED ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR FOR CANCER?

Rarely is screening recommended more than once a year, However, we advise that screening option frequency be discussed with primary care physicians.

WHAT REASONS/EXCUSES HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED FROM MEN NOT GETTING TESTED FOR PROSTATE CANCER?

AA culture in the Black community for men to resist seeking health care for prostate concerns and having fear about rectal exams or about loss of erectile function from treatment. Since 2012, another reason is confusion caused by conflicting opinions and recommendations.

IS PROSTATE CANCER CURABLE? IF SO, WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF IT RETURNING?

With early detection, prostate cancer is 100% treatable. Early diagnosis and treatment leads to better outcomes.  Knowledge, Faith and Early Detection Matter Most

IF I’M NOT OF AGE TO A RECEIVE PROSTATE CANCER EXAM BUT I HAVE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS, CAN I REQUEST THE TEST ANYWAY?

Men who have a family history of prostate cancer may consider earlier screening. Screening options should be discussed with your health care provider.

WILL INSURANCE COVER THE COST OF A PROSTATE EXAM IF YOU’RE NOT AT THE RECOMMENDED AGE?

Insurance may be available for those men who have a history of prostate cancer in their family.

‘You Have to Respect the Office.’ Tiger Woods Deflects Questions About His Friendship with Trump

Tiger Woods on Sunday deflected questions about his relationship with President Donald Trump, telling a reporter that “you have to respect the office” of the President regardless of personal opinions.

Woods, who appeared at a news conference after tying for 40th place at the Northern Trust, avoided going into specifics when a reporter asked about his friendship with Trump. However, he did note that he has known the President “for a number of years,” Sports Illustrated reports.

“Well, he’s the President of the United States,” Woods reportedly added. “You have to respect the office. No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office.”

Woods, who has golfed with a number of former presidents, said Sunday that his relationship with Trump began before he took office, and has continued into his presidency. Last year, for example, the duo played a round together at Trump International Golf Club in Florida, which Woods looked upon favorably at the time, according to USA Today.

“What most impressed me was how far he hits the ball at 70 years old. He takes a pretty good lash,” Woods reportedly wrote on his website. “Our discussion topics were wide-ranging; it was fun. We both enjoyed the bantering, bickering and needling.”

Trump commented on the matter Monday, criticizing “the fake news media” for asking Tiger about the President.

Woods stayed circumspect on other topics as well. When a reporter asked about race relations during the news conference, Woods declined to comment because he had “just finished 72 holes” and was “really hungry,” according to Sports Illustrated.

‘Searching’ is the rare movie about the internet that actually gets the internet

TwitterFacebook

At first glance, Searching looks like just another cautionary tale about the dangers of the internet.

John Cho plays David, a dad who delves into his daughter’s virtual life after she goes missing. As you’d guess, he soon discovers there was a whole other side to his beloved Margot (Michelle La) that he never knew.

But of all the film’s twists and turns (and it’s a mystery thriller, so there are plenty), the biggest one might be that it’s not really anti-technology at all.

To director Aneesh Chaganty, this was key. “Everything, everything we watch about technology is about how our screens are alienating us, how we’re obsessed with likes, how AI is going to take over the world so we should just stock up on our canned foods now,” he told Mashable earlier this month in LA. Should You Tell Your Colleagues About Your ASD?

If you’re doing well in your job, but your supervisor and coworkers don’t know that you have autism, should you tell your colleagues about your ASD? Should you tell them when you interview, when you start work, or only if you need specific accommodations and/or if problems arise? We recently heard from an autistic lawyer who is trying to make that decision:

Reader M asks:

I’ve been recently diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. It’s not a huge surprise, an assessment was begun when I was a child and discontinued because my parents were concerned about me being labeled. Now, before my diagnosis I skipped three grades, entered law school young enough that I was the youngest woman there for all three years, did incredibly well at my bar exam, and have been successfully employed. Should I go public with my diagnosis? What could go wrong?

This is a really interesting question. We haven’t talked about autism before, but we recently discussed how to manage ADHD in the workplace (incidentally, up to 50% of people with autism show signs of ADHD), and we’ve also shared advice on disclosing other personal/medical information at work, such as how to announce your pregnancy at work, as well as tips for handling frequent doctors’ appointments and making time for therapy.

Note to readers: Some people on the autism spectrum prefer being referred to as “a person with autism,” while others identify themselves as “an autistic person.” (This is framed as person-first vs. identity-first language.) We don’t know what Reader M prefers, so we’re using both.

For readers who don’t know a lot about autism, here are a few facts to frame the conversation about ASD and the office:

We sought advice from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, which “seeks to advance the principles of the disability rights movement with regard to autism,” and certified coach Barbara Bissonnette, who offers career development, job coaching, and workplace advocacy for people with Asperger’s through Forward Motion Coaching.

Before we share advice from ASAN, we’ll pass on their personal message to Reader M: “Congratulations on learning more about yourself, and for reaching out. We’re glad to know you’re part of our world.” (As their email response was a joint effort, we aren’t attributing their quotes to a single person.) Here is their input:

  1. Realize that being openly autistic at work can have an impact beyond your own experience. “[It] can also help make your workplace more welcoming for autistic and disabled employees who come after you. … [Y]ou can challenge people’s preconceived ideas and make your field more accepting,” say the folks at ASAN.
  2. Still, consider the risks: “People can change the way they see you, or start looking at you through a stereotypical lens,” says ASAN. “Sometimes, if the way they treat you differently is subtle, it can be hard to prove that they are discriminating against you or make them stop.” (Ed. Note: See this recent Ask a Manager post.)
  3. Know that your experience may be a mixed bag: “We know autistic lawyers who are successfully practicing in their fields (we have a couple working here at ASAN!). We have also heard about autistic people being discriminated against in law — for example, an employer limiting an autistic lawyer’s access to clients after learning about their disability.”
  4. Do some research specific to your field: “We aren’t aware of any states which would not let you be admitted to the bar because of an autism diagnosis, but it is a good idea to check your state’s bar questions to be sure. It might also be helpful to check out the ABA’s Commission on Disability Rights, which has a disabled attorney mentoring program.”
  5. Remember, it’s all up to you. “[D]isclosing your disability at work is a personal decision, and it is yours alone to make,” says ASAN.

Here are some of Barbara Bissonnette’s tips for Reader M on whether she should tell her colleagues about her ASD:

  1. Learn how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects you — and your employer. Your employer must make “reasonable accommodations for qualified employees who disclose,” says Bissonnette, who adds, “the modification cannot cause an undue hardship to the employer.”
  2. Make a list of the challenges you face at work and be proactive by requesting accommodations. “Make sure that your list does not contain problems related to basic job readiness,” says Bissonnette, who suggests The Job Accommodation Network as a resource, and offers a free guide on her website called Workplace Disclosure Strategies for Individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome & Nonverbal Learning Disorder. You’ll likely need a doctor or another qualified provider to verify your diagnosis, she says.
  3. Make sure HR documents your request and works with your manager. Otherwise, you’re in charge of who knows about your diagnosis. “You can choose to keep it confidential, between human resources and your supervisor,” says Bissonnette. “Or you can identify specific coworkers whom you want to know.”
  4. Be prepared for your employer to counter with alternative accommodations. “Be professional, and demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to compromise. Making demands and threatening legal action puts the employer on the defensive.”

If you are a lawyer with autism (or work in any another field), what would your advice be for Reader M? In your opinion, should you tell your colleagues about your ASD? If you are open about your autism at work, what have been the pros and cons? Readers with any disability/condition that has led you to request accommodations at work: Were your efforts successful? Would you have done differently?

They Died Without Wills: What Aretha Franklin and Prince Taught Us About Estate Planning

Nicki Minaj Postpones Tour in the Wake of Her Twitter Rant About Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Nicki Minaj fans might have to wait a bit longer to see the rapper on tour.

The “Chun-Li” singer, 35, has postponed her North American leg of her NickiHndrxx Tour, Live Nation announced in a statement Tuesday.

Future, who was announced as her co-headliner in June, will no longer be part of the tour, Live Nation confirmed. The U.S. tour was supposed to kick off on Sept. 21 in Baltimore, Maryland.

“Due to scheduling conflicts Future will not be on the North American run,” Live Nation’s statement said. “Nicki Minaj will be announcing new North American dates to kick off in May 2019. Refunds for the previously scheduled North American dates will be available at point of purchase, with new Nicki Minaj on-sale details announced soon.”

Minaj’s European leg will go ahead as planned in 2019 with the tour kicking off in Munich, Germany, on Feb. 21, alongside Future.

The tour changes follow a report by Page Six that ticket sales for the tour were much lower than expected.

A source told the outlet, “Nicki’s tour could be the most disappointing ticket sales of the year for any artist.”

According to the source, the rapper’s concerts were in arenas with the ability to fit around 20,000 fans but sales in Baltimore only showed 2,000 tickets sold, while in Los Angeles 3,400 tickets were sold.

New Orleans sold 1,000, while Chicago sold 3,900. Minaj’s hometown of Brooklyn only sold 5,050, the outlet reported.

The news comes after Minaj accused Travis Scott of using his girlfriend Kylie Jenner to promote his Astroworld album on Sunday. Her own album, Queen, was released on Aug. 10.

Minaj claimed Jenner — who included a link to his album in an Instagram post saying she and the couple’s daughter would be joining him on tour — was partly behind the success of his album.

I put my blood sweat & tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi. Lol. Im actually laughing,” Minaj wrote on Sunday.

In a separate message, she wrote that Scott’s high sales could also be attributed to the fact that he’s selling album bundles online, which also include merchandise and tour “season passes” that entitle fans to priority venue entry and discounts.

Continuing, Minaj praised the success of her album, writing, “#Queen broke the record of being number 1 in 86 countries. Thank Jesus & thank you to my fans.”

Hours later, Minaj denied that she had beef with Scott or Jenner.

“People are calling me thinking I’m huffing & puffing. Omg y’all this is sarcasm/dry humor. Yikes. I’m having the most iconNIC time. Come let me kiss you,” she wrote, adding a series of kissey face emojis.

Continuing, she wrote: “When people call me & hear me crackin up laughing they seem so puzzled. Loosen up.”

Minaj made her return to the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night in a surprise remote performance where she performed a medley of songs from her new album Queen at The Oculus.

Can we talk about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s holiday with George and Amal Clooney?

So many goals.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle has had a trying time in the run and up and since becoming a Duchess, with the Markle side of her family causing her more drama than most royals will endure in a lifetime.

From her father Thomas Markle’s repeated involvement with the press to multiple estranged relatives from Tyler Dooley to Samantha Grant cashing in on her title, and using it to pursue careers in reality TV, Meghan has had a rough time of it, and it’s safe to say that the Duchess of Sussex deserves a holiday.

Luckily, it looks like that time is here, with Meghan reportedly jetting off to her old home of Toronto on a solo trip, but that’s not her first holiday this year.

Yes, while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s honeymoon destination still remains secret, it has been revealed that the couple have gone on a star studded holiday this year – spending some time at George and Amal Clooney’s luxurious Italian villa.

That’s right, according to Italian magazine Chi, the newlyweds had a mini holiday in Italy this year, reportedly staying at the couple’s Lake Como villa for three nights – and the couple’s twins were even there too.

Now that is one holiday that is definitely giving us FOMO.

Nicki Minaj’s Mother, Carol Miraj, Opens Up About Her Son Jelani’s Child Rape Conviction [Video]

Nicki Minaj’s mother Carol Maraj is on a mission to bring new light to her son’s child rape case; accusing the district attorney of everything from tainting the jury, to tampering with evidence and falsifying DNA findings.

Last Wednesday (Aug. 8), Mother Maraj sat down with Charles Fisher and The Hip Hop ‘Hood Report for an exclusive, tell-all interview. During the chat, she revealed that an alternate juror said last fall that he would have acquitted Jelani Maraj in the rape case involving his 11-year-old stepdaughter based on a lack of evidence, Hip Hop Wired reported.

The interview was announced earlier in the month and has since aired again on New York’s Public Access TV. It can be viewed via the clip above. Jump to the five-minute mark to hear Carol speak about the case.

As noted by Vibe, Maraj claims jurors discussed the case outside of the court and determined her son’s fate before the trial even began, using Nicki’s absence as a measure of culpability.

“One of the jurors said, ‘I can’t wait to see his face when I bring him in guilty,’ and ‘that bastard this,’ people were talking,” she said, which is reportedly noted in the court’s transcripts.

“But we have the affidavits to prove that they were busy talking about his sister, why didn’t she take the stand, that means that he’s guilty. If his sister didn’t show up that means he was guilty. They totally ignored the evidence that there was no evidence to prove this man guilty. So they went by their own mind, by their own feelings, and they already had him guilty way before the trial ended.”

Maraj believes there were several instances of jury misconduct and that part of the trial was influenced by Wendy Williams’ opinion on the matter. She insists that an expert said that sex allegedly did not happen between her son and the minor and that there are conflicting accounts that should be considered to clear her son’s name.

Meanwhile, it’s been almost a week since Minaj dropped her highly anticipated fourth album “Queen,” but the rapper is still making some adjustments to the project.

Her hit collab with 6ix9ine, FEFE — which has been available for three weeks — has been added as track 20 on the album.

According to Billboard, Queen is currently in a tight race against Travis Scott’s Astroworld for the No. 1 spot on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart. If Minaj topples him, she will be the first female rap artist with three No. 1 albums.

Serena Williams Opens Up About Her Complicated Comeback, Motherhood And Making Time to Be Selfish

On a bright, cloudless early-August day in Silicon Valley, Serena Williams opens the back door of the Spanish-style home she shares with her husband, tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, and walks down a flower-lined path to her office. Lemon trees bloom near the entrance to the backyard tennis court; in the clear distance, airplanes slip over the San Francisco Bay. Serena–who long ago ascended into the pantheon of stars known by a single name–swaps her pink Crocs for sneakers, and grabs a broom and dustpan to sweep pine needles off the hard court.

Just three nights earlier, Serena suffered the worst defeat of her 23-year professional career, a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Johanna Konta in the opening round of a U.S. Open tune-up tournament down the road in San Jose. That it was only her fifth tournament since giving birth to her daughter in September–or that in the fourth, Wimbledon, she made it to the finals in one of the most spectacular displays of will, skill and grit in the history of the game–didn’t make the loss hurt any less.

Serena Williams Time Magazine Cover

Serena has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, one short of Margaret Court’s all-time record. The U.S. Open, which begins on Aug. 27 in New York City, is her last chance to even the score this year. And with age and the demands of parenthood looming over her singular career, Serena knows every chance matters. So, time to work.

She pounds shots from every angle, moving side to side, sending one ball screaming crosscourt at a cone target near the baseline. After a few hundred swings, her fitness guru, a white-haired sexagenarian named Mackie Shilstone, suggests she take a 30-second break. She insists on 20. He offers her water. She refuses.

Finally, Serena calls time. She sits on a wooden bench and fiddles on her iPhone. She’s tinkering with designs for her new clothing line when Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. waddles out the back door. Mom’s thwops and grunts have woken her from her nap. Serena leaps up to guide Olympia down the stairs to the court, counting off the steps in French: “Un, deux, un, deux.”

The moment can’t last. Serena isn’t done with her workout. Shilstone’s waiting to chase her all over the court and make her dodge tennis balls he tosses at her midsection. Olympia is led back inside, and Mom digs into more ground strokes. But for the rest of the training session, she steals glances at the house. “I wonder,” Serena says between backhands, “what my baby is doing?”

Millions of working parents wrestle with this question every day. In cubicles and call centers, at restaurants and on assembly lines, a large portion of the world’s workforce consistently thinks about their children. That concern can be deep, gnawing, even painful for anyone, but no working mother on the planet is quite like Serena Williams.

Becoming one almost killed her. The pregnancy was easy, she says, but the delivery led to a series of complications, including a life-threatening pulmonary embolism and hematoma that required multiple surgeries. She spent the next six weeks mostly in bed, too weak to get up on her own, let alone swing a tennis racket. Even as she gradually regained her strength, Serena couldn’t shake a sense of sadness, a feeling that she had done something wrong or wasn’t doing enough. She had gone through hell to have Olympia, and she loved her like it. “I didn’t think I’d be this attached,” Serena says. “It’s difficult to leave her.”

That’s a tricky proposition for a world-class athlete. Professional tennis all but requires selfishness–the time needed to train, to travel and to maintain competitive focus blot out virtually all else. Parenting is essentially the opposite. You are no longer the point. Yet at 36, an age when even the greatest champions tend to lose a step, Serena is determined to show that it doesn’t have to be so. Maybe not everyone can do it. Maybe just her. In her two tournaments since Wimbledon, she couldn’t make it past the second round. But maybe trying will be inspiration enough.

Serena William's Husband Ohanian Holding Olympia
Richard Shiro—Getty ImagesSerena’s husband Ohanian, seen holding Olympia during a Fed Cup match in February, has brought their daughter to most of her mother’s matches since she returned to tennis

Mothers the world over rallied around her remarkable run at Wimbledon, which Serena says has helped carry her through the low moments. “I dedicated that to all the moms out there who’ve been through a lot,” she says. “Some days, I cry. I’m really sad. I’ve had meltdowns. It’s been a really tough 11 months. If I can do it, you guys can do it too.”

Serena, as her vanquished opponents know, is different. And yet no modern athlete who has reached her level of stardom has ever returned from so difficult a childbirth, at her age, in a grueling individual sport like tennis, to claim a major global championship. And since Wimbledon, she’s faced a particularly rough stretch in her personal life. The man who killed her older sister Yetunde Price was released from prison. The postpartum symptoms haven’t fully gone away, and she says separating herself from Olympia has become even harder. Why keep at it?

“I’m not done yet, simple,” Serena tells me, as we drive into San Francisco one evening for a speaking engagement. She needs tennis as much as her sport needs her. It’s the one thing, as a mother, she can do solely for herself. “My story doesn’t end here.”

Serena was two months pregnant when she beat her sister Venus in the 2017 Australian Open final, a victory that broke Steffi Graf’s Open-era record of 22 major titles. (Unfair, Venus joked later: it was two against one.) Serena is convinced Olympia knows she’s a Grand Slam champion, describing her walk as a cocksure, “little bowlegged strut.”

Serena met Ohanian in Italy in 2015. They were engaged by the end of the following year and married in November 2017, in New Orleans, after Olympia was born. “I always assumed I’d marry a black guy,” Serena says. “I always felt that I could relate more with a black guy, that we’d have more struggles in common, you know?” But the pair clicked.

Their bond was tested fast. Olympia was born through emergency C-section. The next day, Serena began to feel out of breath. She suffered a pulmonary embolism in 2011, and thought this might be another one. Serena demanded a CT scan for her lungs. “If she doesn’t understand her body as well as she does, and the doctor doesn’t listen to her, I don’t necessarily think we’re sitting here,” says her agent, Jill Smoller, in the players’ lounge before Serena’s match in San Jose.

The scan showed blood clots. Coughing from the embolism caused her C-section wound to pop; in surgery, doctors found a large hematoma in her abdomen. Another procedure inserted a filter into her veins to prevent more clots. She kept the filter after it was removed, and puts it on her kitchen table as we talk. It’s shaped like a badminton birdie. “How was that in my veins?” Serena asks.

Ohanian remembers that harrowing stretch as a plunge from highest high to lowest low. “It’s a lot to change gears from being really happy and thrilled about bringing this life into the world to having to kiss your wife goodbye and praying she’ll be O.K.,” he says.

There were five surgeries, all told, and the first few months of recovery were particularly tough. The couple hunkered down at their home in South Florida, while Serena’s mother Oracene moved in to help. For weeks, Ohanian lifted Serena out of bed in the morning.

Olympia’s birth, and the frantic, fumbling bond of new parents, brought the family closer together. They now spend most of their time together in South Florida, and also have homes in Southern and Northern California, where Ohanian has installed a PlayStation near Olympia’s playpen. “Yeah, he’s a nerd,” says Serena. They also have a stocked bar in her playroom. “Sometimes,” she says, laughing, “you need it.” Serena even managed to implement “no cell phone” Sundays despite Ohanian’s full-time, device-dependent work life, but she’ll catch her husband in the act. “He doesn’t put it down until I look at him,” she says.

Her desire to play tennis again, however, never wavered. Williams began slowly, doing some light hitting in Florida. By early 2018, she felt strong enough to return to the pro tour. The results have been mixed. She lost in the first round in her second tournament, in March, and then reached the fourth round of the French Open in June before a pectoral injury forced her to withdraw.

Serena’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, says she made choices that put her family above her career, including staying home with Olympia and Ohanian rather than going early to Europe for clay-court prep. “I felt the decisions were taken through the angle of the family, where before, every decision was taken through the angle of tennis,” says Mouratoglou. “This is a big difference. Even if you are Serena, if you want to be successful in tennis, tennis has to be priority No. 1.”

Breastfeeding was another tension point. Serena nursed Olympia for the first eight months, even though she believes it made it harder for her to get back into playing shape. “You have the power to sustain the life that God gave her,” she says. “You have the power to make her happy, to calm her. At any other time in your life, you don’t have this magical superpower.”

Once Serena did arrive in France for clay-court training, Mouratoglou told her she should stop nursing, for the sake of her game. “It’s absolutely hard to take from a guy,” Serena says. “He’s not a woman, he doesn’t understand that connection, that the best time of the day for me was when I tried to feed her. I’ve spent my whole life making everyone happy, just servicing it seems like everyone. And this is something I wanted to do.”

But Serena also wanted to get back on top, and she says she came around to the idea that she needed to stop nursing Olympia in order to make it happen. “I looked at Olympia, and I was like, ‘Listen, Mommy needs to get her body back, so Mommy’s going to stop now.’ We had a really good conversation. We talked it out.”

Serena then committed to Mouratoglou’s training plan. “I’ve never seen her work like that before,” says her coach. In July, Serena made her thrilling run on the Wimbledon grass, before falling to Angelique Kerber in the final. The tennis world was floored.

“I’ve never met an athlete that can just produce the highest level of hunger, desire and mental determination other than her,” says Chris Evert, who won 18 Grand Slam singles titles in her career. “I’m in awe that she got to the finals.”

Still, Serena feels like she let the opportunity slip away. She stopped scouting her opponents so closely, since they tend to bring their game to another level against her. But she decided to prep for Kerber. “I really wish I hadn’t done that,” she says. “Because she played much, much harder than she’s ever played in her life. Hit nothing like she normally does. I was like, O.K., this is classic. Why did I do this? Just focus on Serena. That’s when I do my best.”

Back in Silicon Valley, Serena is behind the wheel of her white Lincoln Navigator, maneuvering the tank-size SUV into a metered parking spot outside her local Equinox. After her backyard hitting session, she agreed to a 30-minute strength and agility workout with Shilstone. But every minute at the gym counts as lost time with Olympia, and she sets the timer on her phone, promising to vanish after a half hour.

She means it. Olympia is almost always on her mother’s mind. On the ride to the gym, Serena spotted a deer and her fawn in the front yard of someone’s house. She stopped the car, rolled down the window, and gasped. “Oh my God, are you serious? That’s me, that’s Momma, that’s Serena.” She then looked toward the fawn. “That’s the baby, that’s Olympia.” She gazed at the deer for a few beats more, then wondered aloud if the baby deer had a “Qai Qai.” That’s the name of Olympia’s favorite doll.

Like so many new parents, Serena still marvels at how strongly she feels pulled to her daughter, finding joy in how Olympia washes her hands in the dog bowl, smooshes avocado into her hair and shot puts Tupperware across the kitchen. “Sometimes she just wants Mommy, she doesn’t want anyone else,” Serena says, nearly choking up. “I still have to learn a balance of being there for her, and being there for me. I’m working on it. I never understood women before, when they put themselves in second or third place. And it’s so easy to do. It’s so easy to do.”

Early on, eager to bond with Olympia, Serena was hesitant to let others even hold her. “She was a bit of a baby hog,” says her sister Isha Price. “She was putting way too much pressure on herself. But that’s what she does.”

Serena says now it was born of a deep insecurity that she was somehow failing as a mom. “It was crazy to hear her in a state of, ‘I just don’t know what to do with the different emotions,’” says the singer Kelly Rowland, part of a small group of moms Serena leans on for advice. “It was hard to wrap my head around it. I’m like, She can do everything.”

That’s the thing about being a parent, though, particularly a working mom. No matter your resources–and Serena, who has won more than $ 86 million in prize money, and Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit and a prominent venture capitalist, have far more than most, including child-care help–it’s still easy to feel like you’re somehow failing. The stress of juggling family and career has brought out the same insecurities in Serena that other parents feel. “I don’t think I’m doing it right,” she says.

She fell prey to peer pressure on social media, posting a photo of her post-pregnancy body on Instagram. She says now that she used a waist trainer to push in her stomach. “I hated that I fell victim to that,” she says. “It puts a lot of pressure on women, young and old.”

Serena Williams at the Cincinnati Masters
John Minchillo—AP/ShutterstockSerena’s comeback has been mixed; she lost in the second round at the Cincinnati Masters, here on Aug. 14

Her vulnerability as a mom is a stark contrast to her poise on the court and, increasingly, off it. Since returning to the tour, for example, Serena has spoken out about gender discrimination in the workplace, questioning why women coming back from maternity leave should lose their seeds in a tournament draw. Williams was the top-ranked player in the world before she had Olympia. At the French Open, she did not receive a seed–a penalty that could dissuade other players from having children.

“It would be nice to recognize that women shouldn’t be treated differently because they take time to bring life into this world,” Serena says. She’s not the first player to come back after giving birth, but it wasn’t until she did that the U.S. Open pledged to incorporate maternity decisions into its seeding process.

Another sore spot: discrepancies in drug testing. The United States Anti-Doping Agency has tested Serena five times in 2018, according to its records. Meanwhile Sloane Stephens, who won the U.S. Open a year ago, has been tested once. Serena called such differences “discrimination” on Twitter and thinks it’s because some people won’t accept that she’s clean. “Look at me,” she says, glancing at her herself in a mirror at home. “I was born this way. They’re like, ‘Oh, she can’t be that great, she must be doing something.’ I don’t even lift weights.” Serena laughs. “It’s all God, you know,” she says. “But whatever.”

Serena is used to being a target. It began when she and Venus started rising up the ranks of a predominantly white sport, and has continued even as she became the face of the game. Last year, while Serena was pregnant, the former top men’s player Ilie Nastase made a racist comment about her child, and in the spring, the owner of a pro tournament in Madrid took a shot at her weight.

“They sure don’t throw a dart at other people, huh?” Serena says after I ask what accounts for the hate. She says, rightly, that the vitriol is far outweighed by her millions of fans, before considering the question again. “I’m a black woman,” she says. “Women in general are not treated the same as men who’ve had the same amount of success. And then, being a black woman, doing something historically that’s never been done, it’s easy to feel like, ‘We’ve always picked on people of this color. So I’m O.K. to continue to do it.’” Serena says she thinks black men have it even tougher. In February, NBC released a documentary she narrated on the 1968 Summer Olympics, and she marvels at Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who famously raised their fists during the national anthem to protest America’s civil rights record. “They sacrificed everything,” Serena says.

So did Colin Kaepernick, I mention. Serena owns a small stake in the Miami Dolphins, and she supports the right of NFL players to protest during the national anthem.”He hasn’t lost his joy,” she replies.

Serena has met the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback twice: once before he started his protests in 2016, and once after he became Donald Trump’s bogeyman. Since taking a knee during “The Star Spangled Banner,” Kaepernick has raised $ 1 million for various nonprofits. “Colin is happy with what he’s doing,” she says. “Some people are different. He’s just different.” She doubts an NFL team will hire him, especially after he filed a collusion grievance against the league. But she’s convinced Kaepernick would win a Super Bowl. Few believe in the power of determination like Serena. “He’d have so much to prove,” she says. “I would. I can’t imagine he would be any different. ‘Man, I’m about to show out. Y’all gonna see stuff you’ve never seen before.’”

After her workout at Equinox–30 minutes, on the dot–Serena drives the SUV back home and lingers in her attached garage. She’s beginning to talk, for the first time publicly, about a painful discovery from three nights earlier. She was in a players’ area before her match in San Jose, with about 10 minutes until showtime, when she pulled out her phone and checked Instagram. There, she learned that the man convicted of fatally shooting her sister Yetunde Price, in 2003, had been released on parole earlier this year. “I couldn’t shake it out of my mind,” Serena says. She laughs, which she sometimes does during uncomfortable moments. Price had three children, who were 11, 9, and 5 at the time of the their mother’s death. “It was hard because all I think about is her kids,” she says, “and what they meant to me. And how much I love them.”

Serena Holding Olympia
Alessandra Sanguinetti—Magnum Photos for TIME Serena, holding 11-month-old Olympia at their home outside of San Francisco

She takes a deep breath. “No matter what, my sister is not coming back for good behavior,” she says. “It’s unfair that she’ll never have an opportunity to hug me. But also …” she pauses, the thought hanging in the air. “The Bible talks about forgiveness.” Does she forgive the killer? “I’m not there yet,” she says. “I would like to practice what I preach, and teach Olympia that as well. I want to forgive. I have to get there. I’ll be there.”

Serena will bring all of this onto the sport’s brightest stage at the U.S. Open in late August, the final Grand Slam tournament of the year. She’s playing for something bigger than herself now, which can bring outsize expectations. “I really hope she gets to 25,” says Billie Jean King, a pioneering 12-time Grand Slam singles champion. King says she’s seen signs that the fire is back in Serena’s belly. “It’s in everything she’s telling the world,” she says. “She gets this look, then she puts that leg up and she gets that fist going. I love it when she gets like that.” King even thinks Serena could be President one day. Serena laughs off the suggestion.

The bright lights of Flushing Meadows have been the site of some of Serena’s greatest triumphs–she’s won the Open six times–but her last two appearances ended bitterly. In 2015, Roberta Vinci shocked Serena in the semifinals, denying her bid to become the first player since 1988 to win all four major tournaments in the same year. The next year, she again was upset in the semis, falling to No. 10 seed Karolina Pliskova. “I’m trying to get a new vibe there,” Serena says, “but I’m not going in there thinking I’m going to lose. That’s not being Serena. That’s being someone else.”

Serena wants Olympia to see and remember her mom winning a Grand Slam title. When I mention that some kids might not begin recalling specific events until around age 5, she says she hopes Olympia’s memory will be more advanced. Or maybe she’ll will keep going, long past when her peers have given it up. “I don’t plan on that,” Serena says. Then again, she never figured she’d still be playing at 36. If someone would have asked her a decade ago if she’d still be swinging a racket in 2018? “I would have said, Absolutely no, impossible, no chance,” she says. “I’d bet my life on it.”

Priorities have changed. She wants Olympia to have a sibling. She’s learning on the fly, like all parents. She still gets down, and has moments when she doesn’t want to hang out with Olympia and then feels terrible for it. And then there’s all the time she can’t bear to pry herself away, despite knowing that her game will suffer for it. But mostly, Serena is learning to recognize the swings, tell herself they’re normal and fight the urge to beat herself up. “Nothing about me right now is perfect,” she says. “But I’m perfectly Serena.”

Sometimes a good cry helps. And sometimes lessons come the hard way. San Jose was one of her first nighttime matches since she gave birth. Before Olympia, the day of a night match was all about Serena. Practice early, nap, focus. But this time, she tended to her daughter. She took a little rest, but woke up when Olympia did. She fed her, made sure she’s O.K. “I need to be more selfish for just those couple of days,” she says. “I keep telling myself she’s not going to remember that I spent an extra two hours with her. I should be taking that two hours and focusing on my career.”

Earlier, Serena says as much to Olympia in the kitchen. She wipes yogurt off the baby’s face and swings her around the room, much to Olympia’s delight. “Momma’s going to make you very sad right now,” Serena tells her. “Momma has to go to the gym. But it hurts me more than it hurts you.”

Serena then steps into the garage and heads out. Back to work. Again.

Cathy Hughes Releases Touching Statement About The Passing Of Aretha Franklin

Source: Jay Silverman / Jay Silverman

Today I join my community, my industry and the world in mourning the loss and celebrating the life of my dear sister, friend, and ally, Aretha Franklin. I send my love and offer prayers of grace and peace to the members of her family, her friends and colleagues who walked alongside her and shared her with tens of millions of fans around the world.

I have so many fond memories of Aretha. Throughout her career, I was blessed to share her music and her iconic story. I am humbled to have been a part of her journey and to have served as an eyewitness to the evolution of her artistry and the formation of her legacy.

For more than 60 years, Aretha Franklin shared her gift and touched the world. She was a musical pioneer whose voice defines an era, amplifies a sound and reflects the range of who we are as black people. It is no wonder that Rolling Stone Magazine listed her as number one on its list of “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”

Aretha’s music commanded “R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” and that song not only became a rallying cry during the civil rights movement but also served as an anthem for women who still identify with its message, today. Her timeless classics also became historical markers in our personal journeys and our collective story as a community. She understood her progress was our progress, her success was our success, and when the door opened for her, it opened for us as well. Aretha was unapologetically black. She was committed to black music and black radio. She understood its role in her career and remained loyal to our company across the years.

Like many of our musicians, Aretha’s musical roots are embedded in the black church, and gospel music was at her core. Her talent transcended genres and not only earned her the title of the “Queen of Soul” but also the distinction of being the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And while many will remember her for all of the titles she has received, I believe, Aretha Franklin, in her own words, said it best, “being a singer is a natural gift. It means I’m using to the highest degree possible the gift that God gave me to use. I’m happy with that.” And Aretha Franklin, so are we. Rest in peace my sister.

With total love, respect and appreciation,

Cathy Hughes

The media’s blatant hypocrisy — even about media-bashing

Welcome to the age of self-congratulatory media. “Democracy dies in darkness” goes the ridiculous tagline on the Washington Post’s front page. Reporters openly call themselves heroes and firefighters. Yet when it doesn’t fit the standard left-wing narrative, our Guardians of the Galaxy are MIA. On Sunday, the Unite the Right II rally of white supremacists…

Danny DeVito on the Trump Administration: ‘They Probably Don’t Even Care About Their Own Grandchildren’

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

BEVERLY HILLS, California — “I’ve always been self-centered and hedonistic,” says Danny DeVito, flashing a naughty smile.

We’re seated together on a couch off the lobby of the Beverly Hilton, where the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (minus Glenn Howerton) has assembled to entertain members of the Television Critics Association as part of its summer press tour. The 13th season of the FX series will premiere on Sept. 5, and it’s already been renewed for a 14th, which will tie it with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet as the longest running live-action sitcom in U.S. television history.

DeVito plays Frank Reynolds, Dennis and Dee’s pistol-packing, prostitute-frequenting sorta-father—and arguably the most mischievous, thrill-seeking member of The Gang. Though the charming 73-year-old actor is quick to defend his iconic character: “Frank is not a bad guy—if you’re on his gift list. He does a lot of giving, takes care of them,” he says.

NBC’s Lester Holt Is All About the Low Notes

Award-winning journalist Lester Holt speaks with AARP about his other passion in life in addition to news; playing the bass guitar. Here are quotes by Holt in an excerpt from the article on AARP’s website.

I love all kinds of music – right now I’m in a rock band with some coworkers – but jazz is my favorite style.  There’s a freedom of expression in jazz; it’s improvisational.  I never play a tune the same way twice.

I worked weekends for many years before I became a weeknight anchor.  As I’ve become more known as an anchorman, I’ve always told myself Do not let this job define you.  Obviously I have a passion for the news and enjoy what I do, but I’m not “Lester Holt, Anchorman.”  I’m just me, and I’ve always believed you should have something in your life that you are just as passionate about as you are about your work.  For me, it’s the bass.

I told my wife that when I retire from this job, one thing I would consider doing is being in a wedding band.  If you think about it, most people don’t go out dancing very often.  So when do they dance?  At the wedding receptions!  I was at a wedding last summer, and the band was playing all the great songs, and people were up and dancing and having a wonderful time.  And I thought, Man, what a cool job that would be<
