Anthony Bourdain’s Message of Tolerance Continues On After His Death

CNN

Anthony Bourdain had, arguably, the best job in the world. Traveling across the world to try new foods and, more importantly, learn about local culture and politics for his show Parts Unknown afforded the former chef turned bestselling author a certain worldview that left an indelible mark on his legacy. The first of the final episodes of his travel series will premiere Sept. 23 on CNN.

The season 12 premiere, screened at the Tribeca TV Festival, focuses on Bourdain’s travels to Kenya with guest W. Kamau Bell (of United Shades of America). Over local dishes like fried whole tilapia and goat’s head soup, Bell and Bourdain learn about some of the issues plaguing Kenya, like the dominance of secondhand clothes from the U.S. absolutely decimating the Kenyan textile industry, and the delicate balance local wildlife conservatories must maintain between indigenous tribes and international efforts.

While some—most notably the president—continue to view the African continent as a primitive “shithole” devoid of real culture, Bell, himself of African descent, said during a panel after the screening that Bourdain’s approach toward filming the Kenya episode couldn’t have been more different. “He did not see it as one big country. He saw it as lots of different places,” Bell said. “And he was really read into all the issues in ways that most people who do shows like this just aren’t.”

Mirai Malware Masterminds Avoid Jail Time After Helping Feds

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Three men who assembled a formidable internet weapon out of hundreds of thousands of hacked home routers avoided lengthy prison terms at sentencing Tuesday, after federal prosecutors credited them with helping mitigate other attacks after they were caught.

Paras Jha, Josiah White, and Dalton Norman will all serve five years of probation for creating and deploying “Mirai,” a groundbreaking piece of malware that in 2016 delivered punishing torrents of junk traffic to several U.S.-based hosting companies. U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess also ordered them to pay $ 127,000 in restitution and perform 2,500 hours of community service, during a sentencing hearing in Anchorage, Alaska, where the case was investigated and prosecuted.

Mirai was the first large scale botnet to exploit rampant security holes in the so-called internet of things, an industry term for the growing mass of smart televisions, surveillance cameras, video recorders, refrigerators, thermostats, and other devices attached to the internet. Too many of these devices, security experts warn, are shipping with glaring vulnerabilities such as simple software bugs or default passwords—the kind of security holes that were squeezed out of desktop computers by improved engineering and two decades of bitter experience on a hostile net.

Chrissy Teigen Shows Off Massive Bruise After Falling Down the Stairs the Day Before the Emmys

Chrissy Teigen kicked off awards season with a bang — literally!

The cookbook author and Lip Sync Battle co-host, 32, revealed on Sunday that she slipped and fell down the stairs, bruising her leg in the process.

“Ughh, I just fell down the stairs,” Teigen said in a video posted to social media, panning the camera to show off the black and blue bruise forming on her leg.

Her tumble came at an inopportune time. On Monday night, Teigen is set to attend the Emmy Awards with her husband John Legend, who is nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for playing the title role in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert

“It’s Emmys tomorrow,” Teigen lamented.

Of course, fans of Teigen know this isn’t the first time she’s run into problems before an award show.

Back in February, her fingers were dyed green the day before the Grammy Awards after eating powdered candy. “I ate fun dip with my fingers last night and I’m stained and Grammys are tomorrow,” she tweeted, sharing a picture of her fingers. “I’ve tried everything please help!”

Luckily this time around, Teigen has already had a red-carpet Emmy moment with Legend.

Earlier this month, she was by his side at the Creative Arts Emmys where he won a trophy for co-producing Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert — a historic victory that earned Legend the EGOT and made him the first African American man ever to accomplish the honor.

She later celebrated Legend by sharing a video of him adding his brand new Emmy to his trophy wall.

Meanwhile, Legend, 39, put the spotlight back on Teigen after accepting his award.

“We inspire each other,” he told reporters of his marriage to Teigen. “She inspires my songs, she inspires me to want to be a better husband and a better father. We support each other fully in everything that we do. I root for her in her career and everything she’s doing. And I expect that she’ll be up here winning Emmys herself for all the awesome work that she does.”

“She’s such a dynamic, vibrant personality, and I’ve fallen in love with her a long time before the rest of America did,” he added. “But now America’s fallen in love with her too, and she inspires me every day.”

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Saturday Night Live‘s Michael Che and Colin Jost, will air live on NBC from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 17.

Justin Bieber’s Mom Posts Second Cryptic Tweet After His Courthouse Wedding to Hailey Baldwin

Keeping the faith. Pattie Mallette posted a second cryptic tweet in the wake of her son Justin Bieber’s courthouse wedding to Hailey Baldwin.

“Haters gonna hate,” the pop star’s mom, 43, tweeted on Sunday, September 16.

While it was unclear exactly what the Canadian author was referencing, a source confirmed to Us Weekly that the “Baby” singer, 24, and Baldwin, 21, were legally wed at the courthouse two days prior, on Friday, September 14. Multiple outlets also confirmed the news.

The Drop the Mic host denied that she was married at the time with a since-deleted tweet. “I understand where the speculation is coming from, but I’m not married yet!” the model tweeted on Friday.

As the source explained to Us, “[Justin and Hailey] got legally married, but she believes marriage between God is the real thing.”

According to an eyewitness at the court clerk’s office, the couple entered through a back door with the model in a short white dress and the singer wearing a “very baggy striped shirt and black pants,” after which they were taken into a private office toward the back of the building for privacy. “Hailey was glowing and Justin had his hand wrapped tightly around hers,” the eyewitness said.

Following the news on Friday, Mallette posted a separate cryptic tweet. “Love is unconditional,” she wrote.

The pop star proposed to Baldwin on July 7 at a Bahamas resort. The pair, who dated from 2015 to 2016, had rekindled their relationship just one month prior.

After the Storm: Detect and Repair Roof Damage

Your roof provides essential shelter from the outside world, protecting you and your most valuable belongings from the worst weather. Roofs are designed to weather the elements, but during a severe storm, your home may be damaged by wind, hail, or debris. But this roof damage is not always easy to see.

It’s important for homeowners to be able to identify roof damage, so you can quickly restore your home’s privacy, safety, and comfort. If left untreated, your home can suffer structural damage.

If you have recently experienced severe weather, you may see your neighbors repairing their roofs, or speaking with insurance adjusters in your area. Learn to spot signs of damage and take action, if needed.

Stay Safe and Assess Storm Damage

Before inspecting the exterior of your home for damage, make sure the storm has passed and it is safe to be outside. If you see downed power lines, electrical hazards, or flooding, keep away from the area and immediately call 911.

Even if the coast is clear, continue to be aware of potential hazards— especially on or near your roof. This is often the most dangerous place for post-storm damage as it can cause structural issues and is out of your line of vision. Check for fallen trees or heavy debris, loose or broken shingles, and ice dams if it’s a winter storm.

Detect Signs of Roof Damage from Hail

Hail damage is easy to detect. You will hear hail hitting your roof and windows, and you will see pellets of ice gathering on the ground. Hail damage is also usually easy to see— it can dent your siding or even shatter your windows. Hail can also dent your roof or tear away shingles.

Hail damage usually causes the following damage to your home’s roof:

  • Missing Shingles: Look for gaps in the pattern or pieces of exposed roof. You may also see shingles on the ground near your home.
  • Damaged Shingles: Check for shingles on your roof that are curled, buckling, dented, or cracked.
  • Build-up in gutters and downspouts that have collected loose asphalt granules.
Flashing and downspouts that are dented, hanging, or missing.

Roof wood shingles rot and warp after storm damage.

Check for Signs of Wind Damage

High wind speeds have the potential to knock over trees, shatter windows, and damage roofs. If shingles are blown away, the roof deck or underlayment is left exposed to the elements. This leaves your home even more vulnerable to water damage.
After a heavy windstorm, check on the exterior of your home for the following:

  • Damage depending on your roof type:
    • All Shingle Roofs: Missing, cracked, or curling shingles
    • Composition Shingles: Granule buildup in gutters
    • Wood Shingles or Shakes: Rotting and mold
    • Flat Roofs: Cracks, tears, or surface bubbles/wrinkles
    • Damage to roof support or accents:
      • Flashing: Tears or buckling
      • Roofing Cement: Loose or crumbling cement
      • Gutters and Downspout: Rust, rot, or missing and dented sections
      • Chimneys: Loose or crumbling brick

Look for Signs of Water Damage

Missing or broken shingles from hail and wind damage can be quickly identified, but the effects of water damage can take longer to detect. Untreated water damage and leaks can lead to mold, which can affect your home’s foundation and structure.

Here are the most important places to check for signs of flooding, leakage, and general storm damage:

      • Gutters: Check here for water buildup. If water isn’t being redirected properly, it can pool next to your home and create mold and damage to the structure.
      • Ceilings: Check for water spots and yellow, copper, or brown discoloration.
      • Walls: Inspect for signs of cracking, peeling, or bubbling in the paint or wallpaper.
      • Check your attic, basement, and crawl spaces for mold or wood rot and leaks. This can reveal itself as a musty smell, which can occur as soon as 24-48 hours after a storm.
      • Flooring: Look for gaps or curling floorboards, sagging wood that feels soft to the touch, or expansion in wood and laminate floors Expansion occurs when the materials become waterlogged.
      • Roof: Cracked, curled, or missing shingles.
      • Windows: Look for moisture buildup (fog) between glass panes.

Ceiling becomes discolored and moldy after undetected roof damage.

Contact Your Insurance and a Find a Roofing Contractor

If you detect any of the damage above, it’s important to contact your homeowners insurance and find a roofing contractor to help stop future damage and repair your home.

1. Document the damage

Before you touch anything, take detailed notes and multiple photos of all damage to the area— both interior and exterior. This documentation will be important when you submit your insurance claim.

2. Safe-proof potential hazards

Cover or board up any windows with shattered or jagged glass. Next, cordon off any areas that could be a danger.

3. Submit your claim

The next step is to report the damages to your insurance company as soon as possible.

Time is of the essence when submitting a claim. Insurance companies have a limit of filing claims within one year of the damage. It is best to contact your insurance company by phone, as well as email.

Document all your contact in a folder to help keep conversations, details, and dates organized. Submit your photo documentation and any receipts you’ve incurred along the way (for example, proof of your housing if the storm made your home temporarily uninhabitable).

4. Make an appointment with an insurance adjuster

The insurance company will arrange an appointment for an adjuster to come out to your home and assess the roof damage. It is very important that you get three to four contractor estimates before you meet with the adjuster so that you have a professional benchmark for the project cost. Make sure your appointment with the adjuster will give you enough time to get contractor estimates first.

5. Get in touch with a trusted roofing contractor
Now it’s time to contact a few trusted contractors. They will assess the repair or roof replacement cost and offer complimentary project quotes that you’ll give to your claims adjuster at your appointment. Most contractors have experience with storm-damaged homes, so it’s wise to ask your contractor to be present to make sure you get a fair assessment.

Modernize now offers homeowners a free digital Contractor Checklist as a simple step-by-step guide to assist with your windows project. Access the interactive contractor checklist by visiting the Modernize Homeowner Portal (Log in using the link provided in your email) or download it here.

6. Replace or repair
Depending on the severity of the damage, your contractor will suggest either a roof repair or roof replacement. Any changes in the original estimate should be recorded in writing. The project is finished after it has passed a city inspection and you’re satisfied with the completed work to your home’s roof.

Already know you have home storm damage? We can help. Receive up to four quotes from reliable roofing contractors in your area.

U.S. Open Chair Umpire Carlos Ramos Says He’s ‘Fine’ After Serena Williams Controversy

(LISBON, Portugal) — The chair umpire who penalized Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final has spoken publicly for the first time since the match, saying he is “fine.”

Ramos, who is from Portugal, spoke briefly to Portuguese newspaper Tribuna Expresso this week.

“I’m fine, given the circumstances,” Ramos said, according to the newspaper. “It’s a delicate situation, but umpiring ‘a la carte’ doesn’t exist. Don’t worry about me.”

The newspaper said Ramos received hundreds of messages of support from family, colleagues, players and former players. He said he has avoided social media and only reads “balanced” articles about the incident. He also refrained from going out the day after the final to avoid problems, according to the report.

The International Tennis Federation has defended Ramos for his actions during the final. The U.S. Open fined Williams for her three code violations.

The WTA later called for equal treatment of all tennis players and coaching to be allowed across the sport.

Ramos has been assigned to officiate the Davis Cup semifinal matches between the United States and Croatia, a best-of-five series which begins Friday and ends Sunday in Zadar, Croatia.

After the Storm: Detect and Repair Window Damage

Because your windows keep you safe from the outside elements, they are one of the most important features of your home. If your windows are shattered or broken during a storm, they need to be replaced or repaired immediately to restore your privacy, safety, and comfort. But not all window damage is easy to see, and if it goes undetected, it can cause bigger issues—like structural or foundational damage—down the road.

If you have recently experienced a bad storm, you may see your neighbors repairing or replacing their windows. An insurance adjuster may also be speaking to homeowners in the area.

It’s important for homeowners to be able to identify damage after an event. No matter what type of storm you have experienced, learn to spot signs of damage.

Stay Safe and Assess Window Damage

Before inspecting the exterior of your home for damage, make sure the storm has passed and it is safe to be outside. If you see downed power lines, electrical hazards, or flooding, keep away from the area and immediately call 911.

Even if the coast is clear, continue to be aware of potential hazards— especially on or near your roof. This is often the most dangerous place for post-storm damage as it can cause structural issues and is out of your line of vision. Check for fallen trees or heavy debris, loose or broken shingles, and ice dams if it’s a winter storm.

Window damage and house damage due to a fallen tree after a storm.

To Check for Signs of Hail Storm Damage

Hail damage is easy to detect since hail can leave dents in your siding, roof, and car the size of a golf ball. Hail can also easily break or damage windows.

You will hear hail hitting your roof and windows, and you will see pellets of ice gathering on the ground.

Hail damage usually causes the following damage to your home’s windows:

  • Shattered or broken glass
  • Broken, dented, or torn screens
  • Cracked glazing
  • Dented flashing above window or frame

To Check for Signs of Wind Damage

High wind speeds have the potential to knock over trees, damage roofs, and —in severe cases— even shatter unsecured windows. After a heavy windstorm, check on the exterior of your home for:

  • Shattered or broken panes
  • Cracks, holes, or dents in glass
  • Damaged or dented frames
  • Chipped or cracked paint, siding, or wood

Look for Signs of Water Damage

Shattered glass and dents from hail and wind damage can be quickly identified, but the effects of water damage can be easily missed by an untrained eye. Untreated water damage and leaks can lead to mold, which can affect your home’s foundation and structure.

Here are the most important places to check for signs of flooding, leakage, and general storm damage.

  • Windows: Look for moisture buildup (fog) between glass panes
  • Ceiling: Check for water spots, and yellow, copper, or brown discoloration
  • Walls: Inspect for signs of cracking, peeling, or bubbling in the paint or wallpaper.
  • Check your attic, basement, and crawl spaces for leaks, or a damp, musty smell, which can occur as soon as 24-48 hours after a storm.
  • Flooring: Examine for gaps or curling floorboards, sagging wood that feels soft to the touch, or expansion of wood and laminate floors, which occurs when the material becomes waterlogged.

A window is broken after a recent storm.

Contacting Your Insurance and a Finding a Windows Contractor

If you detect any of the damage above, it is important to contact your homeowners’ insurance and find a windows contractor to help stop future damage and repair your home.

1. Document the damage

Before you touch anything, take detailed notes and multiple photos of all damage to the area— both interior and exterior. This documentation will be important when you submit your insurance claim.

2. Safe-proof potential hazards

Cover or board up any windows with shattered or jagged glass that could be a danger.

The insurance company will arrange an appointment for an adjuster to come out to your home and assess the damage. It is very important that you get three to four contractor estimates before you meet with the adjuster so that you have a professional benchmark for the project cost. Make sure your appointment with the adjuster will give you enough time to get contractor estimates first.

5. Get in touch with a trusted window contractor

Now it’s time to contact a few trusted contractors. They will assess the repair or window replacement cost and offer complimentary project quotes that you’ll give to your claims adjuster at your appointment.

Depending on the severity of the damage, your contractor will suggest either a window repair or window replacement. Any changes in the original estimate should be recorded in writing. The project is finished after it has passed a city inspection and you’re satisfied with the completed work to your home’s windows.

If you live in an area with high-impact storms, consider storm windows, which are installed overtop your current windows as an extra barrier against the elements.

Already know you have home storm damage? We can help. Receive up to four quotes from reliable window contractors in your area.

Jake Tapper: Is Trump Unaware 3,000 People Died in Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria?

CNN/screengrab

As the Category 4 Hurricane Florence barrels towards the Carolinas this week, CNN’s Jake Tapper opened his show with two alternating quotes on the screen: “TOTALLY PREPARED” and “UNSUNG SUCCESS.”

Those were the words President Donald Trump used on Tuesday afternoon to describe his administration’s response to Hurricanes Florence and Maria, respectively. This is despite the fact that, according to an official report, last year’s Hurricane Maria directly or indirectly killed nearly 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

“President Trump says we’re ‘totally prepared’ for the hurricane,” Tapper said at the top of his show. “Where have we heard that before?” After playing a clip of Trump “bragging” about his response to Hurricane Maria, the anchor added, “Observers were shocked when President Trump touted his administration’s recovery efforts during the last hurricane season, where the latest government death toll in Puerto Rico is approximately 2,975.”

Billie Jean King, Nicki Minaj and More Show Support for Serena Williams After Controversial U.S. Open

Athletes and celebrities alike have shown support for Serena Williams on social media after an umpire gave her multiple violations during Saturday’s U.S. Open final.

They have called out his actions as being sexist, racist and just plain inappropriate at such a crucial point in a championship match.

Famous athletes, like tennis legend Billie Jean King, expressed dismay at umpire Carlos Ramos’ treatment of Williams on Twitter, writing that female players are often treated differently than male players in all kinds of sports.

“When a woman is emotional, she’s ‘hysterical’ and she’s penalized for it,” King tweeted. “When a man does the same, he’s ‘outspoken’ and there are no repercussions.”

Ramos issued three violations against Williams — which will cost the tennis star $ 17,000 — towards the end of the U.S. open final, which she lost to 20-year-old Naomi Osaka. The violations were for coaching (supposedly Ramos saw Williams’ coach signaling to her during a game), breaking her racket and behavior Romas deemed “verbal abuse.” Many believe his violations impacted the ultimate outcome of the championship match.

His controversial calls were not only a blow to Williams’ legacy — who would have tied Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles — but also cast a shadow over Osaka’s win, which should have been a historic moment for the young athlete. She is the first Japanese player to win the U.S. Open.

Public figures on social media also pointed out that umpires have given warnings, or no violations at all, to male players who have argued similarly in the past.

Others championed the camaraderie between the two players and the example of support that was shown.

Others widely shared Sally Jenkin’s op-ed in the Washington Post, in which she said that the umpire “abused his authority.”

“Ramos took what began as a minor infraction and turned it into one of the nastiest and most emotional controversies in the history of tennis, all because he couldn’t take a woman speaking sharply to him,” wrote Jenkins. “Male players have sworn and cursed at the top of their lungs, hurled and blasted their equipment into shards, and never been penalized as Williams was in the second set of the U.S. Open final.”

Say What Now? Dallas Police Officer Shoots and Kills 26-Year-Old Man After Entering Wrong Apartment, Believing It Was Her Own

A Dallas police officer was arrested on Friday morning after she mistakenly entered the wrong unit in her apartment building and fatally shot a 26-year-old man who was minding his business inside.

via NYDN:

The officer was fresh off a shift and still in full uniform Thursday night when she walked into what she believed to be her apartment at the South Side Flats, located about a block away from the Dallas Police Department Headquarters. She was confronted by a man, identified by the Medical examiner’s office as Botham Shem Jean.

“At some point, she pulled her weapon and shot the victim,” Sgt. Warren Mitchell told reporters during an early morning press conference Friday.

The officer reported the shooting around 10 p.m. and police officers administered first aid when they arrived on scene. Jean was then taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

When asked whether the officer believed the man was an intruder, Mitchell declined to offer additional details on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“I won’t go into that information right now. We have not interviewed her,” he said.

“We still have a lot to do in this investigation. There’s a lot of information I understand you guys want, but this is all we can give you at this time.”

Authorities did not indicate there were any witnesses to the shooting.

“We have not spoken to anyone else at this time,” Mitchell said.

The officer involved in the shooting, who has not been identified, remains in custody while the District Attorney’s office and police determine appropriate charges, according to WFAA

We have so many questions — was the door unlocked? How did she not realize it wasn’t her unit — did she not notice it wasn’t her furniture? Did she take even a single pause to assess the situation before she started firing her gun?

SO many questions.

Serena Williams is heading to the U.S. Open Finals a year after giving birth—and almost dying

Serena Williams is heading to the U.S. Open Finals a year after giving birth—and almost dying

Serena Williams is just one match away from achieving her record 24th Grand Slam singles title. The 36-year-old tennis champ advanced to the U.S. Open finals on Thursday, September 6th, beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-0 in a tense semi-finals match on the grounds of the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens, New York City.

She’ll now play in the Saturday, August 8th, women’s final. A win there will see her name listed in the history books, tied with Margaret Court for the all-time record of the most Grand Slam singles titles ever. The feat—already outstanding—is even more remarkable, as Williams’ life was in serious jeopardy just one year ago.

After giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia on September 1st, 2017, via emergency cesarean section, the athlete had a near-death experience involving pulmonary embolism—forcing her to spend the next six weeks in bed.

Williams has also struggled with postpartum depression, and previously opened up about the pain she felt leaving her daughter’s side to return to the tennis court. “I didn’t think I’d be this attached,” Williams told TIME in August. “It’s difficult to leave her.”

When she did get back to work, victory wasn’t immediate.

Prior to the Open, Williams played in five tournaments. In August, there was a crushing loss in the opening round of a U.S. Open tune-up tournament in San Jose, California. One month earlier, Williams made it to the final women’s singles round of Wimbledon, but was defeated.

“It’s obviously disappointing, but I can’t be disappointed,” she said in an emotional speech after the Wimbledon loss. “I have so much to look forward to. I’m literally just getting started.”

“I dedicated that to all the moms out there who’ve been through a lot,” she added. “If I can do it, you guys can do it too.”

Tennis still, though, has remained the one thing Williams points to as something she can do for herself, she told TIME.

I’m not done yet, simple,” she said. “My story doesn’t end here.”

Throughout it all, husband Alexis Ohanian has been nothing but supportive, cheering her on from the sidelines.

Williams has also had a little cheerleader in daughter Alexis Olympia, who — in a sweet photo posted to Instagram on Thursday night — adorably modeled a tiny version of the black tulle dress created for her by Off-White designer Virgil Abloh for the athlete’s first match at the U.S. Open last week.

“Did Momma win?” Williams captioned the shot.

Minutes after her win on Thursday night, Williams told ESPN, “A year ago, I was fighting for literally my life at the hospital after I had the baby. Every day I step on this court, I am grateful that I have an opportunity to play this sport.”

“No matter what happens in any match—semis, finals—I just feel like I’ve already won,” she said.

Images of Owens working at a local Trader Joe’s went viral online, prompting several comments shaming him for his job. Others, however, came to Owens’s defense and shared stories of the jobs they have had throughout their careers.

Among those who showed support for Owens is Perry, who invited the actor to join his show on the OWN network in a tweet.

“I have so much respect for people who hustle between gigs,” Perry said. “The measure of a true artist.”

Perry has three shows at OWN this year, including The Paynes, The Haves and the Have Nots and If Loving You Is Wrong, Deadline reports. The Haves and the Have Nots was the No. 1 original scripted series for African-American viewers in 2017.

Speaking on Good Morning America on Tuesday, Owens said the experience shed light on the “dignity” of work and that “every job is worthwhile and valuable.” The outpouring of empathy toward his situation revealed that many working actors and artists often take on different jobs to make ends meet.

“I was really devastated,” Owens said of the shaming he received. “But the period of devastation was so short.”

ROXANNE Pallett will disappear from the spotlight after telling pals she wants to quit showbiz following her disastrous stint in Celebrity Big Brother.

The actress, 35, called herself the “most hated woman in Britain” and admitted she’s “scared for the future” during an emotional interview with Emma Willis yesterday as she addressed the fall out from her claim she was assaulted by Ryan Thomas.

A source exclusively told The Sun Online: “Roxanne will turn her back on showbiz.

“She understands she’s upset many people and wants to step out of the spotlight to focus on herself.

“She’s not interested in anything to do with fame now and is convinced time away is the best thing for her.”

The former Emmerdale star vomited after appearing on The Jeremy Vine Show earlier in the day as the stress of “punchgate” got to her.

The punch row so far

Today it was revealed she will not be returning to Emmerdale after she falsely accused Ryan Thomas of assaulting her.

The 35-year-old quit the house after “punchgate” and has faced a furious backlash from viewers and former co-stars who have sprung to Ryan’s defence.

Roxanne wants to spend time focusing on herself

Soap bosses have ruled out a returns for Roxanne in the Dales, despite a public apology during last night’s CBB.

A spokesman for Emmerdale said: “There are no plans, nor have there been, to bring back the character of Jo Sugden.”

Roxanne’s performances in the soap between 2005 and 2008 drew critical acclaim, and she was involved in a major domestic violence story line.

Her tearful interview with Emma yesterday has been called “insincere” and a “publicity stunt” by viewers convinced she only did it for damage limitation.

Fans praised the show’s host for not holding back when she questioned the 35-year-old over the allegations.

Roxanne winced and started to cry after Emma challenged her on the statements she made against Ryan.

Emma, 42, said: “You could have ruined him”.

An emotional Roxanne replied: “It’s a lot to deal with. I’m the most hated girl in Britain right now.

“I am scared about the future… I just want to say I’m sorry.”

LiAngelo Ball left his JBA seat after seeing the Lakers drafted Svi Mykhailiuk over him

LiAngelo Ball’s hopes of hearing his named called during the NBA draft never came to fruition nor did he find a spot on an NBA Summer League roster. But despite heading into the draft with tempered expectations, the middle Ball brother was optimistic the Lakers would ultimately draft him. Christina Grimmie’s Mother Tina Dies of Cancer Two Years After Singer Was Killed

Two years after her daughter Christina‘s tragic and sudden death, Tina Grimmie has died of breast cancer.

“We are saddened to announce the loss of our beloved Tina, also affectionately known as ‘Mama Grimmie’ to the millions of fans of Christina Grimmie around the world. She will be missed immensely,” the Grimmie family said in a statement shared on social media Sunday.

“Tina fought a courageous and brave battle with cancer for many years, even until her final hours with family by her side,” the statement continued. “While this is a bittersweet moment for us as a family, particularly after losing Christina two years ago, we rejoice at the thought that Tina and Christina are united once again in the presence of our Lord and Savior.”

On June 10, 2016, Christina was shot after performing as the opening act for Before You Exit at The Plaza Live venue near downtown Orlando. Grimmie’s brother Marcus heroically tackled her assailant Kevin James Loibl to the ground, before the latter turned the gun on himself. The singer was 22.

Hey #TeamGrimmie, here’s a special message to you from Mama Grimmie! See full video on our FB page. #CGforever @travisflores

“Tina Grimmie was a powerful and shining example of motherhood, being an amazing wife while giving love and encouragement to others. Her laugh, energy, passion and joyful spirit will eternally be a part of all of us,” the statement added.

In October 2014, Christina, who rose to fame on YouTube and later The Voice, revealed that her mother had survived breast cancer four times.

“My mom has had breast cancer four times, now. And she just got put back on chemo again,” she told AXS at the time.

After Christina’s death, the Christina Grimmie Foundation was created to support families who have lost a loved one to gun violence or have a member diagnosed with breast cancer.

In lieu of flowers, the Grimmie family asks that donations be made to the Christina Grimmie Foundation in Tina’s honor.

Tina is survived by her husband Bud and son Marcus.

Khloe Kardashian’s Trainer Defends Kim’s Weight After Backlash

Kim Kardashian recently faced backlash for her trim figure, but her sister Khloé Kardashian’s personal trainer, Gunnar Peterson, is not concerned.

“[Kim has] never looked less than perfect, and I don’t think you look at the number on the scale,” Peterson, 56, told Us Weekly exclusively at the Rolls Royce X Technogym event at his home in Beverly Hills on Thursday, August 30. “If she’s happy and she’s healthy, then why would anybody weigh in on that? All puns intended.”

Kim, 37, made headlines in July when she bragged about losing weight. Her sister Kendall Jenner said in a Snapchat video at the time, “I’m really concerned ‘cause I don’t think you’re eating. Like, you look so skinny,” to which Kim responded, “Oh, my God. Thank you. … I’m down to 119 pounds, but I will say when I take out my hair extensions, I am less.”

Emmy Rossum and Stephanie Beatriz were among the stars who called out the social media mogul. “The only time I was 119 pounds [was] when I had MONO. On a magazine shoot and everyone was ‘freaking out over how good’ I looked,” the Shameless alum, 31, wrote on her Instagram Story on July 31. “I had lost ten pounds and was gaunt and sick and felt faint.”

Later that day, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star, 37, wrote on Instagram, “Kim Kardsahian saying what she weighs and her sisters complimenting her being so skinny is like eating my brain rn. There’s only one time in my life when I ever weighed 119 pounds. It was right in the middle of a terrible relationship, and intense eating disorder, and I thought that I could be thinner and look better. … It sucked.”

Like Peterson, Khloé, 34, came to Kim’s defense. “She looks great, and I’m praising her for looking good,” she told E! News on August 2. “But she always looked good.”

The KKW Beauty founder did not appear to be bothered by the controversy, though. She revealed on August 22 that she is now down to 116 pounds.

U.S. Open Player Hugs It Out With Rival After He Was Forced to Retire

Canadian tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime was forced to pull out of the first-round of the 2018 U.S. Open due to health concerns brought on by the heat.

After splitting the first two sets of his opening match with fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov on Monday, Auger-Aliassime tearfully retired from the tournament in the midst of the third set. The 18-year-old was suffering from tachycardia —a.k.a. an elevated heart rate—a condition that previously forced him to drop out of a 2017 Challenger event and is often exacerbated by heat.

Auger-Aliassime was clearly distraught over the results of his U.S. Open debut. However, Shapovalov was nothing but supportive of his opponent and even shared an emotional embrace with him at the net.

“It’s actually really tough to see him going out like this,” Shapovalov said. “I told him at the net we’re going to be back here, we’re going to play so many of these.”

U.S. Open Criticized for ‘Sexist’ Double Standard After Alizé Cornet Was Penalized for Briefly Taking Her Shirt Off

Alizé Cornet was penalized at the U.S. Open for quickly removing her shirt and putting it back on, a move from the Open that critics are calling sexist.

The chair umpire Christian Rask hit French player Cornet, who is ranked No. 31 in the world, with the code violation, effectively a warning in the sport, during her opening round match against Johanna Larsson on Tuesday.

Cornet’s code violation came during a scorcher in Flushing Meadows, Queens, on Tuesday. It was so sweltering at the U.S. that the heat rule was in effect, permitting players to take 10-minutes breaks to try to cool off and drink water after their second sets. Cornet was just returning from her 10-minute break when she appeared to realize her shirt was on backwards. And so Cornet, who was wearing a sports bra underneath, took it off to put back on correctly.

Cornet was in disbelief and can be heard saying “Violation for what? Really?” in a video of the moment when the umpire stated the violation.

According to the official Women’s Tennis Association rulebook, a player is only allowed to change their clothes somewhere off of the court or during the end of a set, or during timeouts related to medical issues. Cornet changed her shirt between the second and third sets. She quickly returned to play the game after receiving the violation.

The penalty doesn’t affect the score, and Cornet ultimately lost to Larsson 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.

Critics online were quick to call out the punitive action, pointing out that male tennis players frequently take their shirts off to cope with the oppressive heat with no consequences. For instance, Novak Djovovic took his ice bath shirtless to try to cool down during their opening match on Tuesday.

Five male players were already forced to pull out of the U.S. Open because of health issues related to the intense heat. The heat won’t break until later in the week, according to weather reports.

The WTA commented Wednesday afternoon, calling the violation “unfair,” and “not based on a WTA rule,” adding “Alize did nothing wrong.”

White House Counsel Don McGahn to Leave After Kavanaugh Vote, Trump Says

White House Counsel Don McGahn will leave his job after the Senate votes on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, President Donald Trump said in a tweet.

The development comes as legal risks to the president rise, following the conviction of his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort last week on fraud charges and his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen’s guilty plea to charges of fraud and campaign finance violations.

McGahn “will be leaving his position in the fall, shortly after the confirmation (hopefully) of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court,” Trump said Wednesday. “I have worked with Don for a long time and truly appreciate his service!”

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump White House Counsel Don McGahn will be leaving his position in the fall, shortly after the confirmation (hopefully) of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. I have worked with Don for a long time and truly appreciate his service!

During his time as White House counsel, McGahn repeatedly butted heads with Trump and occupied a position rife with conflicts. He has met extensively with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team in its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and is an important potential witness regarding whether Trump obstructed justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey.

Because he’s a witness in the Russia investigation, McGahn has had little involvement in the White House’s response to the probe since at least August 2017, when lawyer Ty Cobb was brought into the West Wing to work directly with investigators. Lawyer Emmet Flood replaced Cobb earlier this year and could move into McGahn’s job.

Flood is well respected within the White House but no decision has been made on McGahn’s replacement, according to one administration official who asked not to be identified discussing a personnel matter.

McGahn also came under fire earlier this year for his office’s handling of a security clearance for former White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter, who was accused of domestic abuse by two ex-wives.

The American Nightmare: 10 Years After the Housing Collapse

A decade ago, the economy imploded. Between 2007 and 2010, approximately 9 million homes went into foreclosure. As the 10-year anniversary of the 2008 financial crisis approached, The Penny Hoarder asked readers to share their stories from the collapse.

Over and over, we heard the same word: nightmare.

Most didn’t just lose a home. Unemployment, medical debt, divorce and bankruptcy often accompanied the foreclosure.

Few blamed the Wall Street bankers for trading their biggest investments irresponsibly. No one blamed rising home values that went unchecked. Some blamed their mortgage lenders, but most people blamed themselves, even though they knew the crisis was much bigger than them.

For the people who shared their stories, the foreclosure crisis isn’t in the distant past. Many still haven’t regained what they lost.

In “The American Nightmare,” The Penny Hoarder tells the story of lives forever changed by the housing crisis.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

After Insulting Police Entrapment Scheme, Rapper Vic Mensa Gives Back

The Chicago police department recently came under fire for setting up a sting operation that many said was a form of entrapment. The operation was a joint effort between the police and Northern Southern Railroad and involved parking unlocked, unmanned trucks filled with sneakers as bait to catch thieves.

Only three people ended up swiping shoes. A viral video of the so-called ‘bait trucks’ sparked outrage and the railroad company has since apologized.

In an effort to diffuse the situation, native Chicago rapper and Roc Nation signee Vic Mensa announced that alongside his SaveMoneySaveLife foundation, 5,000 sneakers will be given away to kids in need at the same location where the “bait truck” incident initially took place. Mensa has asked for the support of shoe companies, professional athletes, and other high profile public figures to make a contribution to this initiative.

The rapper also tweeted an Amazon.com link where anyone can donate by purchasing sneakers directly that will go toward the drive.

Laundi Keeseagle, who serves as the executive director of Vic Mensa’s foundation was quoted as saying, “We wanted to do something in response, but have a positive response.”

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, an official date of the giveaway event has not yet been determined but will be announced once the sneaker goal has been reached.

Vic Mensa is taking a grassroots approach to alleviate an issue that directly affected his community in the Southside of Chicago.  Increasingly, entertainers are using their influence for social impact. Other notable Chicago rappers including Twista, Chance the Rapper, and Common have also given back to the city.

Chance the Rapper has been particularly active in giving back. Last December, he hosted a holiday party at The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago to raise money for homeless children.

His organization, SocialWorks, raised $ 2.2 million as of 2017—funds set aside for the Chicago Public School system.

“All I’ll say about it is I want to go to the future — still topical, but the future, which I’ve never done,” Murphy said at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour, Entertainment Weekly reported.

“I pitched it to John Landgraf today right after his TCA panel, and he loved it, but he’s asked me not to say what it is,” Murphy added. “I told him and he fell out of his chair with joy. I think people will like it, it’s different from what we’ve done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I’ve done on that show.”

At the time, Murphy was optimistic that many of the original AHS stars would return for the crossover, including McDermott and Britton, the latter of whom starred on Murphy’s Fox drama 9-1-1.

“I want all of them,” he said. “I want Dylan, and Connie and Jessica . They’ve all said — Kathy Bates, too — everybody who is involved in the show has always said, ‘Yeah, that sounds like fun, let’s get the band back together again.’ So that is one of the reasons why the writing process of that season is taking longer because it’s literally 25 people’s schedules. But I’m hopeful they will all be back.”

Earlier this month, franchise star Sarah Paulson revealed that Jessica Lange will return as Constance Langdon from Murder House in an episode that Paulson will actually direct, EW reported. Apocalypse will find Cody Fern playing Michael Langdon, the antichrist that Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton) gave birth to and then Constance adopted,

CNN Suspends Trump-Defending Pundit Paris Dennard After Sexual Harassment Claims

CNN

Less than two hours after The Washington Post published its damning exposé about Paris Dennard, a prominent cable news defender of President Donald Trump, CNN announced that it was suspending the pundit “effective immediately.”

“We are aware of reports of accusations against Paris Dennard,” a spokesperson for CNN said Wednesday evening. “We are suspending Paris, effective immediately, while we look into the allegations.”

Those allegations, reported by Aaron C. Davis for The Washington Post, paint the picture of a man who was repeatedly accused of sexual harassment before he was ultimately fired by Arizona State University four years ago.

Tamar Braxton’s Ex-Nanny Finally Paid In Full After Sale Of Calabasas Mansion

Tamar Braxton’s former nanny, who won a $ 213,000 judgment against the reality star last year, has finally received her payment, thanks to the sale of the singer’s 13,716-square-foot Calabasas estate, reports The Blast.

Earlier this year, Sally Lou Perkins filed a lien against the 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom home of Tamar and her husband Vince Herbert, which meant if the property was sold, Perkins would be paid from the sale.

The original asking price for the home was $ 15 million, when the house was put on the market in October following Tamar’s divorce filing. The lien filed by Perkins demanded she be paid $ 213,431.37 from a judgment she won relating to unpaid wages.

On August 8, Tamar and Vince sold their home for $ 9,250,000, far less than the asking price and even less than the $ 10.5 million they paid to buy it in 2012.

Sources tell The Blast that Perkins received a check this week, which paid her entire judgment in full. She now hopes to use her victory to help other domestic workers in similar situations, and has plans to work with the New York-based organization National Domestic Workers Alliance, reports The Blast.

Perkins was hired to care for the estranged couple’s son Logan during Tamar’s Love & War Tour in 2014. She said her duties included preparing meals and snacks, transportation, getting Logan dressed, creating nurturing activities to stimulate development, attending to his social and emotional needs, cleaning bedrooms and doing laundry.

Perkins had originally filed a claim with the State of California Labor Standards Enforcement and they were the ones who ordered Braxton to pay.

Saudi Arabia Might Not Fund Elon Musk’s Take-Tesla-Private Plans After All

The blows just keep coming for Elon Musk.

In August alone the entrepreneur has become the subject of an SEC investigation, made a dubious Twitter announcement about taking his company Tesla private, and gave a teary interview to the New York Times, causing Tesla shares to plummet.

Now it looks like the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, the main candidate to take Tesla private, might actually invest in a Tesla rival instead. Reuters reported on Sunday that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) was in talks with Lucid Motors Inc. Lucid Motors is already privately held, and PIF’s interest in investing highlights the fund’s agnostic desire to diversify its portfolio, rather than any specific interest in Tesla.

Although Musk indicated that financing to de-list Tesla had been secured from PIF, others questioned whether the sovereign wealth fund had enough cash to do the deal, as it’s already having difficulty with its existing commitments. Investing in Lucid Motors may be more in line with the fund’s resources, according to Reuters.

Lucid Motors was founded in 2007 by a former Tesla executive. Although the company is not yet selling cars, it is taking $ 2,500 deposits from consumers towards a $ 100,000 luxury sedan the company hasn’t even started building yet.

Davis, a junior, is alleged to have committed battery on his girlfriend on multiple occasions in April and June, according to a police report obtained by WBRZ in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The report alleges Davis tried to strangle her, broke one of her ribs and texted threatening messages. Davis played in all 13 games for LSU last season, catching three passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, including an 87-yard score against Syracuse. He also caught one pass for 19 yards in 2016. The Beeb took action after he was accused of pestering a female researched on The One Show when he was working as a reporter.

He was seen as a rising star in the corporation but has struggled to land work since.

A spokeswoman for the BBC said at the time: “Producers of The One Show received a complaint regarding Hardeep’s behaviour towards a production colleague.

12 Steps to Take Care of Your Money After Landing Your First Grown-up Job

You did it. You’re free! With a college diploma in your hand, you run out to take the world by storm. It’s time to show everyone just how awesome you can do the adulting thing.

Then the bills start rushing in like your college buddies at a happy hour taco bar.

Getting that first real job might not happen just as you hope. For 2017 Florida State graduate Hannah Bartholomew, the job market wasn’t quite what she had expected.

“They really blow salaries out of proportion in college,” she says. “They really exaggerate what you’ll be making out of college. I had to think, ‘What is the very minimum I can make?’”

So even when you do find a job in your field, you might not be cashing checks as big as you thought.

But you’re in the real world now, and it’s time to give yourself a reality check.

How to Manage Your Finances After You Get a Real Job

Here are a few ideas to start your financial life off on the right foot.

1. Get a Few Bucks for That Futon

One of the first things you want to do when you get a good job is to upgrade your home, even if it’s still a one-bedroom rental. No more futons and framed Bob Marley posters. You’re ready for a sectional sofa and some real art.

But don’t just shove that stuff into your car and take it to the donation stop. It still has value to somebody. Sell it!

You can sell virtually anything on Letgo. This intuitive app lets you snap a photo and list your item in less than 30 seconds. It removes a lot of the hassle of selling things online, and it’s 100% free to use.

2. Start Budgeting — Without Giving up on Fun

The dreaded B-word. Budget. It doesn’t have to be as scary as you think. Having a budget doesn’t mean you have to cut out any and all fun things in your life. It just means you are focusing your finances enough to meet your goals.

“When I graduated, honestly, my primary goal was to find a way to support myself and not have to move back in with my parents,” says Bartholomew.

Talk about life goals. We’ve all been there.

If you’re a bit nervous about setting a budget, consider the 50/20/30 budget. It’s easy, and it gives you plenty of wiggle room because, face it, you still want to hit that happy hour taco bar once in a while, right?

Here’s how it works. Every month you set aside:

  • 50% of your income for essentials, like rent or mortgage, groceries, utilities, car insurance and other important bills.
  • 20% for your financial goals, like retirement savings, paying down your college debt or even saving for a home.
  • 30% for your personal spending. These are your funds for dining out, drinks with friends, Netflix, travel, shopping, etc. That’s a pretty big chunk of money you get to play with each month.

The trick to this budget, like any, is to stick to it. You’ll make progress on your financial goals while still having a life.

3. Break up With Your High School Bank

“The bank that I use is a local credit union that I’ve used my whole life,” says Bartholomew. “Quite honestly, it’s a hassle to switch banks.”

Quick… why do you bank where you bank? Like Hannah, it’s probably because that’s where your family has always done their banking business. But other options offer perks you might not have considered.

Take, for example, the option to get your shiny new paycheck a couple of days early. If that idea sounds good to you, you should check out Chime.

Unlike most banks, this online bank won’t wait until your pay date to get your money. As soon as it receives notification of a direct deposit from your employer, it immediately posts those funds to your account — up to two days before payday.

Who doesn’t want to get paid early?

Opening an account with Chime is free and only takes about five minutes.

4. Take Care of Your Student Loans

Now that you have your diploma in hand and you’re gainfully employed, you’re going to have to start paying back those student loans.

Ugh.

Do your loans have a good interest rate? Finding a lower rate can help you spend less on interest and pay off those loans faster.

Consider refinancing for a better rate.

An easy way to do this is with LendKey, a service that allows you to quickly browse low-interest loans from credit unions and community banks.

That’s LendKey’s secret sauce. Compared to the big national bank chains, smaller community banks often offer more borrower-friendly loan terms — namely, lower interest rates and more flexibility.

LendKey’s simple, straightforward online platform can help you find and apply for the right loan without visiting a dozen bank branches.

And if you’ve been turned down by other lenders, don’t fret. LendKey has more lenient credit score minimums and income requirements for applicants, so you have a better shot at getting a loan through the company.

Plus, when you’re approved for a loan you applied for through LendKey, you’ll get a $ 100 bonus after the loan is disbursed. That’s a hundred bucks you can put right toward paying down your new, lower-interest student loan. Boom!

5. Pay Attention to This Score (It’s Not a Game)

Your credit score is important. You’ve heard that. But, now that you’re adulting, it’s time to take it seriously.

Did you know your credit score could be inaccurate? One out of five credit reports have an error, according to a study by the Federal Trade Commission.

To keep a closer eye on your credit, get your credit score and a “credit report card” for free from Credit Sesame. It breaks down exactly what’s on your credit report in layman’s terms, how it affects your score and how to address it.

Because it simplifies everything, you should be able to spot any errors. For instance, if you find an “unpaid” credit card that you know you paid, or a bill in collections you know never existed, you can dispute the incorrect information and raise your credit score.

Now that you have a great job, get a handle on your credit score and start making it shine.

6. Pay Your Bills

Adulting means paying bills. The good news is with your new job, you can afford to pay them. You just need to remember to do it.

How about getting rewards for paying your bills on time?

An app called MoneyLion offers rewards to help you develop healthy financial habits and will literally pay you for logging onto the app.

You can earn points in the rewards program by paying bills on time, connecting your bank account or downloading the mobile app.

You can redeem those points for gift cards to retailers like Amazon, Apple and Walmart.

7. Stop Calling Mom and Dad for Emergency Money

There might have been a time when you could just pick up the phone and call Mom or Dad when your car went on the fritz or you had to pay for a quick trip to urgent care.

Welcome to the real world. You have a career now, so it’s up to you to prepare for those little life speed bumps with an emergency fund.

An emergency fund should be able to help you out with small emergencies, like a car repair, as well as tougher times, like finding yourself out of work for a bit. A savings account with three to six months of income is typically recommended.

Don’t worry. You don’t need to have it all set right away, but you should set up a plan to start building that fund. Consider it a buffer between you and living in your parents’ basement. Yeah, your old room is now Mom’s she-den. You didn’t know that? Sorry.

8. Start Thinking About Retirement (Yes, Already)

If you’re just starting out with your 401(k) plan at your new job, do everything you can to put it into high gear. You can really make a difference in these early years.

It takes more than just taking that 3% out of your paycheck, though.

Chances are, your 401(k) could be doing a lot better. Take control with help from Blooom, an SEC-registered investment advisory firm that can optimize and monitor your 401(k) for you and keep it speeding toward retirement.

It just takes a few minutes to get a free 401(k) analysis that will show you whether your investments are allocated properly and whether you’re losing money paying hidden investment fees.

It’ll even tell you just how much more money your account could earn by the time you want to retire. At your age, you might be able to make a significant difference.

After that, if you sign up, it’s just $ 10 per month to have Blooom monitor and maximize your 401(k). Bonus: Penny Hoarders get the first month free with the code PNNYHRD.

9. You’re Ready to Invest (No, Really)

man using Acorns app on phone
Carmen Mandato/The Penny Hoarder

Investing? You’re used to just trying to pay the rent!

It’s OK, you can start small with Acorns. The app lets you stack up change over time with its “round-up” feature. That means if you spend $ 10.23 at the grocery store, 77 cents gets dropped into your Acorns account.

Then, the app does the whole investing thing for you.

The idea is you won’t miss the digital pocket change, and the automatic savings stack up faster than you’d think. For example, we reviewed how Penny Hoarder Dana Sitar was able to save at a rate of $ 420 a year!

At that rate, you could set aside $ 1,000 in about two and a half years — without trying.

The app is $ 1 a month for balances under $ 1 million, and you’ll get a $ 5 bonus when you sign up.

10. Don’t Pay Full Price… Ever

vegetables at Lucky's Market
Chris Zuppa/The Penny Hoarder

These days, there is no reason to pay full price for anything… ever. OK, maybe you pay upfront, but you should at least get some money back, right?

One of our favorite ways to save is with Ebates, a cash-back site that rewards you nearly every time you buy something. For example, Ebates gives you 10% cash-back on online purchases at Walmart.

Plus, you’ll get a free $ 10 gift card to Walmart for giving the site a try.

To earn your gift card:

  1. Sign up for Ebates with your email or Facebook account.
  2. Use the Ebates portal the next time you need to buy something. It’s connected to thousands of stores, including Walmart, Amazon and Target. You’ll need to make your first purchase through the site within 90 days and spend at least $ 25.
  3. Your account will be credited with rewards points you can cash in for your $ 10 Walmart gift card.

Seriously, it’s too easy not to use. You’re buying that stuff online anyway so why not get some money back?

11. Deal With the College Credit You Didn’t Want

Sidekick/Getty Images

A lot of us are being crushed by credit card interest rates north of 20%. It’s OK. It’s the same scoop for a lot of recent grads. If you’re in that boat, consolidation and refinancing might be worth a look.

A good resource is consumer financial technology platform Even Financial, which can help match you with the right personal loan to meet your needs.

Even searches the top online lenders to match you with a personalized loan offer in less than 60 seconds. Its platform can help you borrow up to $ 100,000 (no collateral needed) with fixed rates starting at 4.99% and terms from 24 to 84 months.

You want to keep you college memories forever, not the credit card bills you racked up. A better interest rate will make them disappear like your freshman-year roommate.

12. Figure out Where You Fall on the Adulting Curve

women chatting in the street.

As Bartholomew took stock of her new situation, she had to keep the big picture in mind.

“I make enough money to pay my bills and to save an acceptable amount of what I make,” she says. “But you think about the American dream of buying a home, owning property or being debt-free… that’s something that comes to mind the most.”

But do you know how your financial plan is stacking up your friends’? Admit it. You want to know. What if your friends or relatives your age a getting out of debt and saving way faster than you?

Status Money is an app that allows you to anonymously compare your financial situation with your peers’ without asking those awkward, prying questions. Tap into this database, and you’ll be able to compare your income, debt, interest rates, credit score, spending… you name it.

By seeing how others are doing, you can see what you need to work on — or where you can sit back a little and just breathe easy.

Now Relax. You’ve Done the Hard Part.

You’re at an exciting point in your life. Landing that first “real” job is fun, but it can also be a little intimidating. Life is going to expect a little more of you now.

By taking a good look at your finances now, you can set yourself up for a great financial future. The toughest part is making the decision to do it.

So now what? Did someone say “taco bar”?

Julian Assange Went After a Former Ally. It Backfired Epically.

Jack Taylor/Getty

A botched power play by Julian Assange has led to a split within a key organization supporting whistleblowers and leaves the WikiLeaks founder more isolated than ever among his core constituency of radical transparency activists.

Assange has grown furious at a one-time ally with substantial moral authority within their movement: the journalist and activist Barrett Brown.

Since his release from federal prison on trumped-up charges related to a major corporate hack, Brown been increasingly public in voicing disgust at Assange’s embrace of Donald Trump and general comfort with the nationalist right. That has led Assange, an erstwhile transparency advocate and whistleblower champion, to retaliate.

Round two.

On Sunday’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the tension between Kim, Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian showed no signs of slowing down.

“Kourtney’s got a new boyfriend and a new therapist and I don’t know which one’s the problem, but she’s a different human being,” said Kim, 37, referring to Kourtney’s recent ex Younes Bendjima. “She’s so nasty to us.”

Khloé, 34, and Kourtney’s ex Scott Disick, 35, also raised their concerns about Kourtney’s new therapist — “If you’re watching, we hate you,” quipped Kim at one point — before the three sisters finally sat down to try to hash things out.

“We all have different realities of what goes on when we have our fights,” said Kim. “We all communicate really weird, and we just don’t ever express what’s really bothering us and we all walk on eggshells around each other.”

“We always just sweep things under the rug and we don’t talk anything through,” added Khloé. “That’s just what this family does.”

Kim suggested they see a therapist together, but Kourtney, 39, shot the idea down before falling silent, interrupting the conversation to edit a photo on her phone. The move infuriated both Khloé and Kim, who stormed out of the room.

“If you don’t care to fix relationships with your sisters, I can’t force you to,” said Khloé.

Kourtney broke down into tears, explaining that she felt like they didn’t have her back.

“They don’t take my feelings into consideration,” she said. “I don’t even want to be around my sisters because it just gives me anxiety.”

Kim and Khloé, meanwhile, felt that the main issue was Kourtney being unable to “handle any sort of responsibility.”

“Listen, there’s two new things in her life: boyfriend, and then her therapist,” Khloé told momager Kris Jenner. “Ever since then she’s been a raging bitch and instead of her owning it, she takes it out on everyone else. It’s so rude. It’s not how you raised any of us. We’ve said it in so many different ways. She’s so not engaged and I think that’s what infuriates everyone.”

Eventually, Kourtney agreed to a session with a family therapist.

“I’m here to do this group therapy with my sisters, which I didn’t think that we needed,” she said. “But I think that because we just don’t communicate that well, maybe having somebody else guide the conversation could be very helpful.”

“I think generally we just need to learn how to communicate together,” she continued. “And I’m the one who invented ‘mean fighting,’ just saying the meanest things possible, but I’m just not wanting to fight like that anymore. I don’t want to be mean and I don’t want to spend my time around people that are mean and putting me down.”

“You surround yourself with people that seem to be the opposite, in my opinion,” Kim said. “You’re preaching that you just want this zen life and you’re so positive and you don’t want to fight, but most of the time you’re arguing about stuff that it’s like, again? This? Everyone sees it and everyone comments on it.”

Continuing, Kim pointed out that Kourtney had gotten “anxious and insecure.”

“But it’s also an insecurity I’ve never seen from her before,” Khloé chimed in. “She’s so confident and so secure, but ever since the past few months where she’s been with this therapist … I don’t know what it is, but I feel like she’s angry towards me or annoyed with me.”

“Kourtney and I have a really special bond,” she continued. “I haven’t felt that from her in the last couple of months and that’s been frustrating for me, but I also don’t want to put that all on her shoulders. But I do feel
