‘Empire’ Hits Series Low + Lee Daniels Speaks Out About Cast’s ‘Pain and Anger’ After Jussie Smollett Scandal [Video]

Empire‘s fall is brutal. Variety reported this morning:

The second episode of Empire after the arrest of one of its stars, Jussie Smollett, was the lowest rated in the series’ history.

The March 20 episode scored a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demo, and was watched by just under 4 million total viewers. Last week’s midseason premiere also struggled, with a 1.3 rating and 4.4 million viewers, which means the show dipped by 11% in the ratings and 10% in total viewership since last week.

Empire creator Lee Daniels took to Instagram to speak on the Jussie Smollett fallout: “Me and my cast have experienced pain, anger, sadness and frustration, and really don’t know how to deal with it.”

Take a look below.

Is Anyone Surprised? YouTube Had to Deal With an ‘Unprecedented Volume’ of Violent Videos After Christchurch Terrorist Attack

The Washington Post has reported that YouTube dealt with an “unprecedented volume” of violent videos after last week’s terrorist attack in New Zealand.

On Friday, a gunman murdered 50 worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Currently, 35 more are hospitalized with 12 in critical condition, including a 4-year-old-girl. In an appalling act of cruelty, the murders were recorded and posted to social media channels around the world. As the news unfolded, the footage spread at an alarming rate. After the weekend, Facebook has reported that they removed an astonishing 1.5 million videos of the attack in just 24 hours.

Although YouTube has not made an official statement about how many videos have been moderated, the company said they have experienced an unprecedented volume of violent content. According to The Washington Post, moderators worked through the night to remove tens of thousands of videos of the terrorist attack. In an interview with The Post, chief product officer Neal Mohan said that some uploads were altered to prevent automated tools from spotting the footage.

Reports suggest that copies of the video were being added as fast as one per second. Eventually, this drove the streaming site to disable some search options to control the problem. In addition, they also shut down some human review features to speed up the process. However, by Friday, they had no choice but to send newsworthy clips via human moderators to check for violence or disturbing imagery.

Since the shootings last week, the entire world has been united in shock and sadness. The assailant, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, appeared in court on Saturday. The Australian citizen did not make a plea, but flashed a white supremacist hand signal.
In response to the attack, US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said:

“We, too, have seen the face of such evil with attacks in places such as Charlottesville, Pittsburgh, and Charleston. And in the wake of the New Zealand tragedy, I want to make one thing very clear: We will not permit such hate in the homeland.”

However, unlike the United States, New Zealand’s government has made decisive moves to reform gun laws in the country. In a statement, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said:

“We have listened to public sentiment following Friday’s terrorist attack in Christchurch and decided to remove all semi-automatic firearms sales and parts associated.”

Meanwhile, social media giants are facing new challenges about how to moderate violent or disturbing content. While most services agree that this was an unusual incident, the spread of the Christchurch footage has led to calls for companies to do more to protect users from hateful and violent material.

Bill Maher Goes After Dems for Rejecting Fox News Debate: ‘How Very Trump of You’

HBO

On Friday night, Bill Maher dedicated his latest “New Rule” to the Democratic Party, who he urged to “grow a pair.”

The Real Time host was riffing on the news that the Democratic National Committee had rejected Fox News as host of a 2020 primary debate, owing to a bombshell New Yorker investigation by Jane Mayer that revealed the uncomfortably (and unprecedentedly) close ties between the Trump White House and Fox News, which one expert said is “the closest we’ve come to having state TV,” as well as how candidate Trump was fed questions by a source at Fox prior to a debate.

“Last week, the Democrats made a terrible decision when they announced that they had turned down Fox News’ offer to host one of their 2020 primary debates, saying Fox was nothing more than propaganda,” said Maher. “OK, so why not go on Fox News and tell them that! You want to be in the big leagues but you refuse to ever play an away game? You don’t like the questions that Fox News might ask, so you’re deciding to not take any questions at all? How very Trump of you!”

Say What Now? Woman Suffers Severe Allergic Reaction to Partner’s Medication After Giving Oral Sex

A woman in Spain suffered a life-threatening allergic reaction to penicillin after coming in contact with the drug while performing oral sex on her partner.

via ABC:

The unidentified woman swallowed her lover’s semen and, afterwards, began to vomit, struggle to breathe and began breaking out in hives. The patient, from Alicante in Spain, went to the hospital with suspected anaphylactic shock.

It is unclear how long after the sexual encounter the woman sought help for her allergic reaction.

Doctors in Spain ruled out a rare semen allergy when the woman admitted to doctors that she never suffered any symptoms in her previous sexual encounters. Medical officials then discovered that her 32-year-old partner had taken moxicillin-clavulanic acid, a form of penicillin, to treat an ear infection.

As a result, doctors suspected her anaphylaxis was caused by “seminal transfer of amoxicillin.”

The case, published in the British Medical Journal Case Reports, is believed to be the first of its kind — ever — to be recorded.

Doctors who treated the 31-year-old woman have now urged individuals who may have a drug allergy to “be aware” of the potential risk from oral sex and to ensure they use condoms when performing sexual acts with their partner.

The man, who also has not been identified, took the medication four hours before having any sexual contact with the woman.

As if the public needed ONE more thing to worry about while engaging in sex practices…

People still fear self-driving cars a year after Uber fatal crash

TwitterFacebook

Elaine Herzberg was walking her bicycle across a Tempe, Arizona street when a Volvo XC90 hit her, almost a year ago on March 18, 2018. She died at the hospital.

The car that hit her was an Uber, but this one was self-driving. The driver and sole occupant in the car was a “safety operator” sitting behind the wheel, not controlling the vehicle.

The fatal crash had immediate ramifications for Uber’s self-driving car program and the industry. Only recently did Uber restart its testing (and only in Pittsburgh). Now 12 months later, we’re seeing that the public perception of autonomous vehicles (AVs) is still heavily affected by that deadly crash.  Read more…

William H. Macy Celebrates 69th B-Day After Wife Felicity Huffman’s Arrest

William H. Macy Celebrates 69th Birthday After Wife Felicity Huffman Is Arrested Over College Admissions Scam

A tough birthday. William H. Macy turned 69 on Wednesday, March 13, one day after his wife, Felicity Huffman, was arrested for her alleged involvement in a nationwide college admissions scam.

Celebrity Mugshots

While it is unclear how the Fargo star is celebrating his big day, he was busy showing support for Huffman, 56, just hours earlier. He showed up at the federal detention center in Los Angeles where the Georgia Rule actress was being held on Wednesday. He carried a briefcase and looked calm as he entered the building.

The Desperate Housewives alum was charged after allegedly making “a purported charitable contribution of $ 15,000 … to participate in the college entrance cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter,” Sofia, 18, according to documents obtained by ABC News.

Stars at Court

The papers also claim that Huffman “later made arrangements to pursue the scheme for a second time” to help her youngest daughter, 16-year-old Georgia’s admission process, but ultimately chose “not to do” so.

Additionally, court documents allege that Macy — referred to in the documents as “Huffman’s spouse” — participated in a consultation about the cheating scheme. He spoke to Us Weekly about his eldest daughter’s college application process earlier this month, admitting that they “talk about it a lot.”

Famous Celebrity Families

“We talk showbiz. My daughter, Sofia, the oldest, she’s in the tribe,” he said at the time. “She’s going to be an actor. She goes to LACHSA, the arts high school here, and we’re doing the college tour, and she’s looking at theater schools.”

In the same interview, Macy gushed over his wife of 21 years: “We’re complimentary, really complimentary. She’s a great mom. She’s kind of astounding. … I’m the luckiest guy on the planet.”

In addition to Huffman’s arrest, Fuller House actress Lori Loughlin and her husband, designer Mossimo Giannulli, along with dozens of other suspects, have been charged in the college admissions scam. Loughlin, 54, was taken into custody on Wednesday morning.

Utah Jazz Fan Shane Keisel Permanently Banned From Arena After Verbal Altercation With Russell Westbrook

The Utah Jazz has banned a fan from attending all arena events following his verbal altercation with Oklahoma City Thunder star player Russell Westbrook on Monday night.

The organization released a statement on their Twitter on Tuesday stating that the fan, Shane Keisel, is permanently banned from Vivint Smart Home Arena, effective immediately, after “excessive and derogatory verbal abuse directed at a player during the game that violated the NBA Code of Conduct.”

The team stated that their decision came after reviewing video evidence and eyewitness accounts.

“The Utah Jazz will not tolerate fans who act inappropriately,” the organization wrote. “There is no place in our game for personal attacks or disrespect.”

Video captured an altercation between a critical fan Keisel and his wife involving Westbrook. “You think I’m playing. I swear to god,” he can be seen saying to Keisel, in the beginning in a video, linked here due to language.

Keisel and four other fans received warning cards, but were able to return to their seats for the remainder of the game.

Following the game, Westbrook told reporters that Keisel and his wife told him to “get on your knees like you’re used to,” which Westbrook said he interpreted as racial, disrespectful and inappropriate.

Two of Westbrook’s teammates, Patrick Patterson and Raymond Felton, who were sitting nearby on the bench during the verbal altercation, said that they heard Keisel make this comment as well.

Despite the accounts of Westbrook’s teammates, Keisel denied saying anything racist or profane to Westbrook, and had a different account of the exchange insisting that he said: “Sit down and ice your knees, bro.”

Westbrook has been fined $ 25,000 by the NBA for directing profanity and threatening language to a fan, the association announced Tuesday afternoon.

NFL Teams Propose Changes to Replay and Overtime After Season of Criticism

NFL teams proposed major changes to replay and overtime on Saturday after a season of consistent criticism of officiating and which plays can be challenged or automatically reviewed.

Among the proposals teams have made to the league’s competition committee are an increase in the number of plays subject to video replay review and a change to the overtime format.

The idea of more or even unlimited coaches’ challenges is not new, but could have stronger support now. Also, the league is reluctant to expand replays for officiating because it would slow games even further.

The competition committee will present teams’ proposals and some of its own to the 32 owners at the league meetings March 24-27.

Several teams are proposing major moves.

Washington wants any play to be subject to coaches’ challenges or to automatic review by the officiating department in New York. The Redskins also suggested that all personal fouls be subject to review, while Kansas City added potential personal fouls that were not called on the field be looked at.

Philadelphia seeks scoring plays and turnovers negated by a penalty be immediately reviewed, and Denver suggests adding all fourth-down plays that are spotted short of a first down or the goal line, and all extra-point tries.

The Rams, Panthers, Seahawks and Eagles want to include reviews of designated player safety-related fouls whether called or not on the field.

Kansas City proposes that both teams possess the ball at least one time in overtime even if the first team with the ball scores a touchdown.

The Chiefs also want to eliminate overtime for the preseason, and get rid of the overtime coin toss so that the winner of the coin toss to begin the game may choose whether to kick or receive, or which goal to defend in OT.

Fans and many media members have vociferously expressed displeasure with the current system regarding coaches’ challenges since a blown call late in the NFC championship game — officials missed a blatant pass interference penalty and a helmet-first hit by the Rams’ Nickell Robey-Coleman deep in Los Angeles territory. The non-calls helped Los Angeles force overtime and eventually win the game to reach the Super Bowl.

But New York Giants owner John Mara said last month at the NFL combine that the powerful competition committee might not feel the same way.

“I just don’t sense a lot of support to use replay to call penalties. I don’t sense a lot of support for the expansion of it, either,” Mara said. “We’re early on, so that might change, but that’s my sense of where we are right now. I’m not saying it won’t change.”

While the league is wary of expanded replays, the Eagles’ suggestion on scoring plays and turnovers negated by penalty being reviewed could garner support.

Kansas City’s overtime proposals also stem from recent developments, including the Chiefs losing the AFC championship after rallying to tie New England. The Patriots won the coin toss, drove downfield and scored a touchdown without KC ever touching the ball.

The 2017 Super Bowl ended in similar fashion.

Denver recommended an alternative to onside kicks by allowing a team once during the fourth quarter to play offense instead. That team must notify the referee of its intention to forgo a kickoff or safety kick. The ball will be spotted on the kicking team’s 35-yard line and that team will have one down to gain 15 yards, essentially a fourth-and-15 play. If the play succeeds in gaining a first down, that team keeps possession as if it recovered an onside kick.

Santa Anita Racetrack Cancels Racing Indefinitely After Deaths of 21 Horses

(ARCADIA, Calif.) — Santa Anita has canceled racing indefinitely to re-examine its dirt surface after the deaths of 21 horses in the last two months.

Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of The Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that racing won’t be held this weekend, when two major races were scheduled: the San Felipe for 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls and the Santa Anita Handicap for older horses.

Ritvo wouldn’t speculate on when training and racing would resume. After this weekend, races were to be run again starting March 14 at the storied racetrack that will host the Breeders’ Cup world championships for a record 10th time this fall.

“In whole, we feel confident in the track and we’re just being very proactive,” Ritvo said. “We want to do all the testing that needs to be done. When we believe we’re in good shape, we’ll start to train over it again.”

The Daily Racing Form first reported the cancellation.

The latest fatality occurred during training on Tuesday, when a 4-year-old filly got injured and was euthanized.

“Obviously, one horse is too many,” Ritvo said. “The recent rash is just horrible. We need to definitely take a step back and evaluate everything.”

Santa Anita received 11½ inches of rain and had unusually cold temperatures in February, but it’s unclear whether track conditions played a role in any of the fatalities.

The National Weather Service was forecasting 1 to 2 inches of rain in Los Angeles County starting overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday.

“We think that (rain) could definitely contribute even though our experts are telling us not,” Ritvo said. “The tracks out here are built not for weather like that.”

Ritvo said officials are “a little bit concerned” with the latest impending storm and how the dirt surface can change from muddy to fast in a short time.

Besides re-examining the dirt track, Ritvo said all racing protocols would be looked at.

“We won’t rush it,” he said. “Everybody takes a deep breath.”

Ritvo was uncertain whether the San Felipe and Santa Anita Handicap would be rescheduled.

“Those are huge races,” he said. “We hope so.”

Seven deaths have occurred during races on the dirt oval at Santa Anita since the track’s winter meet began on Dec. 26. Five have occurred on the turf course and nine came during training on dirt. The highest-profile horse to be euthanized was Battle of Midway, winner of the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. The 5-year-old bay also finished third in the 2017 Kentucky Derby for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The horse suffered injuries during a workout on Feb. 23.

Last week, Santa Anita was closed for two days while the dirt surface underwent extensive testing and was declared fit for racing.

Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally said 4-year-old filly Lets Light the Way “took a bad step or something” on Tuesday.

He said the injury was a shattered sesamoid in her right front leg. Sesamoid bones provide anchor points for the two branches of the suspensory ligament. The bones are under stress each time a horse takes a step. Lets Light the Way was X-rayed and later euthanized.

“I think the weather has a lot to do with it,” said McAnally, whose wife, Debbie, owned the filly.

“Santa Anita has been a wonderful track, and they’ve done all kinds of tests,” McAnally said. “I don’t know what else they could do. It’s a fluky thing.”

Also Tuesday, Vyjack was pulled up after completing a five-furlong workout, according to trainer Phil D’Amato. The graded stakes-winning 9-year-old gelding was taken off the track in a van. But D’Amato told the Daily Racing Form that Vyjack “took a couple of funny steps” and was OK.

The number of deaths has drawn both concern and criticism. A handful of animal-rights activists gathered outside Santa Anita’s main gate on Sunday, carrying signs and shouting.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk agreed with the track’s decision to close.

“This was the right thing to do,” she said in a statement. “The track should remain closed until the California Horse Racing Board dumps the drugs entirely, or injured horses whose soreness is masked by legally allowed medication will continue to sustain shattered bones. PETA renews its call for a criminal investigation into the trainers and veterinarians who may have put injured horses on the track, leading to their deaths.”

Ritvo said, “The first and most important thing is the health and welfare of the horses and jockeys.”

In 2017, 20 deaths occurred among a total of 8,463 starts over a span of 122 racing days at Santa Anita, according to the most recent figures compiled by The Jockey Club. That’s a rate of 2.36 deaths per 1,000 starts.

There were 1.61 deaths per 1,000 starts in the U.S. in 2017, according to the most recent figures from the Equine Injury Database, compiled by The Jockey Club. That was a slight increase in the rate of fatal injury compared with 2016, when there were 1.54 deaths per 1,000 starts.

The deaths were more frequent on dirt surfaces (1.74 per 1,000 starts) than on turf (1.36).

Santa Anita was closed for two days last week while the dirt surface was tested.

Mick Peterson, a soil and safety expert brought in from the University of Kentucky, proclaimed the track “100 percent ready” to resume racing.

Peterson said radar verified that all of the silt, clay and sand, as well as the moisture content, were consistent throughout the track. Its dirt surface was peeled back 5 inches and reapplied.

Since Peterson’s comments, two horses have died, including McAnally’s filly. The 86-year-old trainer is one of the most respected in horse racing and has won three Eclipse Awards as the nation’s outstanding trainer.

Lets Light the Way had one win in four career starts and earnings of $ 18,500, according to Equibase. She last raced Feb. 2 at Santa Anita. McAnally purchased the filly for $ 15,000.

The other death occurred Saturday during the third race when 4-year-old filly Eskenforadrink was in the lead. Jockey Geovanni Franco pulled her up with an injury to her front leg. The filly was taken off the track and was later euthanized.

Track officials announced Tuesday that a former track superintendent is returning immediately to Santa Anita as a consultant on site as “a precautionary measure with regard to the condition of the one-mile main track.” The consultant, Dennis Moore, worked in Arcadia from 2014 until retiring Dec. 31. He currently holds the same position at Del Mar and Los Alamitos racetrack in Orange County.

In 2014, Moore oversaw a major renovation of the dirt surface using sand that was dug up in the coastal suburb of El Segundo for construction projects at Los Angeles International Airport. The sand was screened for foreign materials and large rocks.

At the time, track officials said the reddish-brown sand would ensure balanced drainage during periods of wet weather and a consistent, safe cushion for horses year-round. That’s important at Santa Anita, which added several additional weeks of racing to its schedule after the closure of Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, in December 2013.

Samsung reportedly has two more foldable phones coming after the Galaxy Fold

Samsung foldable phones

Say what you want about the novelty aspect of a foldable smartphone, but while this form factor is very much going to fall in the niche category for the time being, Samsung is nevertheless seriously committed to trying to spur excitement for this new style of handset. So much so that the smartphone maker apparently has two more foldable phones being prepped for after April’s release of the super-pricey Galaxy Fold.

That news comes via a Bloomberg report, which is in line with what we were already reporting back at the end of 2018. As we said in our post from November, for example, Samsung’s ambition is to apparently release at least 1 million foldable phone units a year, including new foldable phone versions each year similar to its Galaxy flagship device launches. In other words, Samsung never intended to put all its eggs in the Galaxy Fold basket.

Tom Sandoval Was ‘Pretty Depressed’ After Calling Katie Maloney a ‘Bully’

Tom Sandoval isn’t afraid to admit that he had regrets the morning after he called his Vanderpump Rules costar Katie Maloney a “bully.”

“The next day I woke up I was pretty depressed about that, obviously I love Katie,” the 35-year-old Bravo star told Us Weekly exclusively. “I think that’s one thing about our show … Some people say the opposite of love is hate, that’s not true. I feel like it’s indifference and we all really care about each other and it emotionally charges things.”

While the impassioned exchange between Sandoval and Maloney, 32, has yet to air on the reality series, fans got a glimpse of the argument, in which the TomTom owner called the SUR waitress a “bully” for getting James Kennedy fired, in the midseason trailer.

Tom Sandoval from Bravo’s ‘Vanderpump Rules’.

“I didn’t get him fired, he got himself fired!” Maloney shouted at Sandoval in the clip.

The bartender then clapped back with an imitation of Maloney: “I can say whatever the f—k I want, to anybody. But if somebody calls me fat, I’m getting their ass fired.”

Maloney and Kennedy went at it earlier in the season after the DJ told her to “lose some f—king weight” during the gay pride event at SUR. After the Maloney gave Lisa Vanderpump an ultimatum, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star let Kennedy go from the restaurant.

As for what motivated Sandoval’s insult in the upcoming episode, he simply teased, “You’ll just have to see how that all plays out.”

For more from Sandoval, watch the video above! Vanderpump Rules airs on Bravo Mondays at 9 p.m. ET.

Hannah Gadsby Is ‘Comfortable’ Not Being Funny in First Stand-up Set After ‘Nanette’

Ben King/Netflix

In the early 1700s, a physician named James Douglas, a quasi-famous midwife known for performing public dissections of female pelvises in his home, came across a wrinkle of uterine flesh he hadn’t seen before. The region was a tiny cavity, sort of like a kangaroo’s flap, which expands if a woman needs more room during pregnancy. The doctor called his anatomical New World the “Pouch of Douglas.” Medical dictionaries describe Douglas’ revelation as “an extension of peritoneum between the posterior wall of uterus and the rectum in females,” but it’s basically a reproductive crawl-space. As findings go, it’s about as close as you can get to discovering nothing. In comedian Hannah Gadsby’s latest stand-up set, a work-in-progress which runs through March 9 at the Hayworth Theater in L.A., she compares the little flap to the extra zipper on a suitcase. “It’s a potential space,” she told the crowd. Gadsby’s calling her new show “Douglas.”

If there’s a specific subtext behind the choice to name her set after the nothing-discovery of an 18th century pelvis dissector, Gadsby doesn’t mention it outright. Douglas is also the name of her dog. But the new show arrives on the heels of Nanette, a comedy special which aired on Netflix last summer, sending waves through the think-piece internet and comedy Twitterverse. The special, for those who managed not to hear about it, had nothing to do with the name Nanette, and everything to do with a problem Gadsby saw in her industry—namely, an expectation that comedy minorities make themselves the butt of the joke. The polarizing show, which begins as a fairly unremarkable set, before taking a serious twist into Gadsby’s account of a hate crime, prompted two tiresome debates: one over whether it heralded the end of stand-up, and another over whether it constituted stand-up at all. But whatever the special meant for its genre, Nanette signaled something fairly straightforward about Gadsby’s career: “I’m quitting,” she told the crowd. She didn’t, as it turns out. And in Douglas, the comic is workshopping what, exactly, not-quitting looks like.

“It’s hard to know what this show should be,” Gadsby told the audience Thursday night, “because I quit comedy.” Douglas is a work-in-progress at its most fundamental. (“This is rough as guts,” she says at one point, “but I feel pretty comfortable, because Nanette wasn’t funny, and, well…”) A willfully half-finished ninety minutes of performance, it’s almost admirably sloppy. Gadsby zig-zags between subjects, goes on long tangents, cuts herself off mid-sentence, drops huge, sometimes hackneyed, personal bombshells, and practices crowd-work to varying, occasionally laborious, degrees of success. But with any rough draft, the audience bears witness to all the potential versions a piece might become, and in Douglas, Gadsby seemed to be staring down two possible paths.

R. Kelly Has Been Released from Jail After Posting $100,000 Bail in a Sex Abuse Case

(CHICAGO) — R. Kelly walked out of a Chicago jail Monday after posting $ 100,000 bail that allows him to go free while awaiting trial on charges that he sexually abused four people dating back to 1998, including three underage girls.

Hours earlier, the R&B star pleaded not guilty to the allegations after spending the weekend behind bars. He said little during the brief arraignment, telling the judge only his name. His lawyers spoke on his behalf.

The singer-songwriter was arrested Friday on 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse. A judge set bond at $ 1 million, meaning Kelly had to post 10 percent of that amount to be released. Court records show a 47-year-old woman from the Chicago suburb of Romeoville, Illinois, posted the $ 100,000 bail and identified herself on the bond slip as “a friend” of Kelly, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Kelly will be forbidden from having any contact with females younger than 18.

The black van that took the entertainer away from the jail stopped in the parking lot of a large downtown McDonald’s. He did not immediately emerge, but some members of his entourage stood outside the vehicle and a dark-colored Mercedes-Benz parked next to it.

The McDonald’s, a popular tourist attraction, was known as Chicago’s Rock ‘n’ Roll McDonald’s before being remodeled and losing its music theme.

The recording artist has been trailed for decades by allegations that he violated underage girls and women and held some as virtual slaves. Kelly has consistently denied any sexual misconduct, and he was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008.

Attorney Michael Avenatti, who said he represents two Kelly accusers, said his legal team gave prosecutors a second video Monday that shows Kelly sexually abusing a minor. Avenatti previously gave prosecutors video evidence that he said showed Kelly having sex with an underage girl.

Avenatti said the second video involves a 14-year-old girl. He said the footage from 1999 or 2000 is about 55 minutes long, but he did not say if it was the same 14-year-old girl seen in the first video he turned over to the authorities.

“The conduct in the tape can be described as nothing short of outrageous, illegal. It leaves no question as to Mr. Kelly’s guilt,” Avenatti said.

Avenatti said he is aware of a third tape, but he did not provide details.

Defense attorney Steve Greenberg reiterated at a news conference that Kelly has done nothing wrong and said no one has shown him any evidence to the contrary.

“Everybody is entitled to a defense. Everybody is entitled to the presumption of innocence. We should all be taking a step back. Let’s see what happens, what the evidence is and how this plays out,” Greenberg said.

Details of the allegations against Kelly emerged Saturday when the prosecution released four detailed documentsone for each accuser — outlining the basis for the charges. The allegations date back as far as 1998 and span more than a decade.

A girl who attended Kelly’s child pornography trial in 2008 got his autograph after a court session. He later invited her to his home in the Chicago suburb of Olympia Fields, where they had sex multiple times starting the following May, when she was 16, according to the documents, which said he also slapped, choked and spit on the girl.

In 1998, another girl reported meeting Kelly at a restaurant where she was having a 16th birthday party. Kelly’s manager gave her the singer’s business card and suggested she call Kelly. The girl’s mother heard the exchange, took the card and told the manager her daughter was 16.

But her daughter later retrieved the card from her purse. She contacted Kelly, who told her to take a cab to his studio, where they had sex periodically for a year, the documents said. After the first encounter, she was given an envelope of cash.

In early 2003, a Chicago hairdresser told prosecutors that she thought she was going to braid Kelly’s hair, but he pulled down his pants and instead tried to force her to give him oral sex. The woman, who was 24, was able to pull away, but Kelly ejaculated on her and spit in her face, the documents said.

Kelly’s DNA was found in semen on one of the accuser’s shirts, and semen found on a shirt worn by another was submitted for DNA testing, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said. It was not clear when the accusers turned the shirts over to authorities.

Rising from poverty on Chicago’s South Side, Kelly broke into the R&B scene in 1993 with his first solo album, “12 Play,” which produced such popular sex-themed songs as “Your Body’s Callin’” and “Bump N’ Grind.” He has written numerous hits for himself and other artists, including Celine Dion, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga.

The jury in 2008 acquitted Kelly of child pornography charges that centered on a graphic video that prosecutors said showed him having sex with a girl as young as 13. He and the female allegedly seen with him denied they were in the 27-minute video, even though the picture quality was good and witnesses testified it was them, and she did not take the stand.

Each count of the new charges carries up to seven years in prison, making it possible for Kelly to receive up to 70 years. Probation is also an option.

The walls began closing in on Kelly after the release of a BBC documentary about him last year and the multipart Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly,” which aired last month. Together they detailed allegations that he held women against their will and ran a “sex cult.”

Nike Stock Falls 1.7% After Duke Star’s Exploding Shoe Injury

(Bloomberg) — Nike Inc. is looking into what went wrong after college basketball’s biggest star sprained his knee when his shoe fell apart, one of the most high-profile apparel failures in basketball history.

Duke University star freshman Zion Williamson, the consensus No. 1 pick in this year’s National Basketball Association draft, tumbled to the court less than 35 seconds into last night’s loss to in-state rival North Carolina. He’d planted his foot to change direction when his left shoe, the PG 2.5 PE, came apart, causing him to fall awkwardly.

The fallout for the world’s largest sportswear brand was immediate. Twitter lit up with jabs from fans and rival brands, making “Zion” and “Nike” trending topics within the social media network. The company’s stock fell as much as 1.7 percent in New York trading Thursday.

“We are obviously concerned and want to wish Zion a speedy recovery,” Nike said by email. “While this is an isolated occurrence, we are working to identify the issue.”

While the incident, which occurred during one of the most anticipated college basketball games of the year, is certainly embarrassing, it likely won’t affect Nike’s prominent standing within the sport, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Chen Grazutis. If you combine Nike and its Jordan brand, the company has more than 90 percent of the basketball market. Nike reported $ 4.35 billion in wholesale equivalent basketball sales in fiscal 2018, about 14 percent of its overall sales.

“They might get a lot bad press over the next couple days, but I don’t think it will have a direct impact on the shoes,” Grazutis said.

Companies like Nike and Adidas pay tens of millions of dollars for the exclusive right to outfit high-profile college programs like Duke, meaning their athletes are required to wear uniforms and shoes made by the team’s sponsor. Though Duke’s contract with Nike isn’t public, the Durham school is one of Nike’s most important basketball partners. For comparison, the University of Kentucky, another top basketball school, recently extended its Nike deal for eight years and $ 30.6 million.

The malfunction might also hurt Nike’s ability to sign Williamson once he decides to go pro. College athletes can’t sign endorsement deals, but competition for elite draft prospects is fierce every year. Last year’s No. 1 pick, Deandre Ayton, signed a deal with Puma SE that was reported to be the largest rookie deal since Kevin Durant’s seven-year, $ 60 million deal with Nike back in 2007.

Williamson is one of the most highly regarded college prospects in years. The 6-foot-7, 285-pound forward suffered a mild knee sprain, according to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. He did not return to the game, and No. 8 UNC upset No. 1 Duke 88-72.

The timing could not have been worse for Nike. Not only was the game televised nationally on ESPN, it was one of the most anticipated college basketball games of the year. The cheapest resale tickets leading up to tip-off were over $ 2,500, approaching Super Bowl levels.

Former President Barack Obama, courtside at the high-profile clash, was shown on video appearing to say with an incredulous look: “His shoe broke!”

It also comes as Nike draws criticism for a different kind of shoe malfunction. Some people who purchased the company’s newest basketball creation, a laceless shoe that you can control with your phone, were unable to connect to the Android version of the app.

This isn’t the first time that Nike’s had problems with its basketball merchandise. After taking over as the official NBA uniform supplier in 2017, multiple stars including LeBron James had their jerseys rip.

Nike stock is up about 25 percent in the past year, similar to the gains of Puma and Under Armour Inc. while leading the roughly 12 percent gain of Adidas AG.

Puma is an upstart in the basketball market, and one of its few NBA players, Terry Rozier of the Boston Celtics, took advantage of Nike’s stumble to urge others to join him.

Kraft Heinz’s Stock Plummets 20% After Company Slashes Dividend, Discloses SEC Probe

The stock price of Kraft Heinz plunged 20% late Thursday after the food giant disclosed it received a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission and reported a large net loss due to the reduction of goodwill in some of its best-known brands.

Kraft Heinz also said in a conference call discussing earnings that it cut its quarterly dividend to 40 cents a share from 62.5 cents and that it was considering selling off some of its businesses to help pay down debt. The company reported $ 30.9 billion in long-term debt at the end of 2018, up from $ 28.3 billion a year earlier.

In its earnings release, Kraft Heinz said it received a subpoena last October related to its “accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls related to its procurement function, including, but not limited to, agreements, side agreements, and changes or modifications to its agreements with its vendors.”

After launching an investigation into its procurements accounting, Kraft Heinz said it recorded a $ 25 million increase in its cost of products sold after determining the amount was “immaterial” to previous reporting periods. The company is also working to improve its internal accounting controls.

The financials reported in Kraft Heinz’s earnings report were well below investor expectations. The company’s revenue rose 0.7% to $ 6.9 billion, missing analyst estimates by $ 50 million, while its GAAP net loss came in at $ 10.34 a share. That net loss was largely caused by an impairment charge of $ 15.4 billion to adjust the goodwill in some of its businesses, including the Kraft and Oscar Mayer trademarks.

Kraft Heinz was formed in 2015 by a merger of the two food companies that was engineered in part by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett has previously spoken about how changing consumer tastes are affecting the appeal of brands belonging to Kraft Heinz. The company’s stock is currently down 64% from the levels it was trading at two years ago.

After Jussie Smollett, Will Real Victims of Anti-LGBT Hate Crimes Be Heard?

Chelsea Guglielmino/Getty

Jussie Smollett just made it that much harder for the United States to have an honest conversation about anti-LGBT violence. What’s especially painful is how urgent that conversation remains.

On Wednesday evening, the Empire actor was charged with felony disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report. The openly gay actor had claimed in late January that two men attacked him late at night on a downtown Chicago street, yelled racist and homophobic slurs, poured bleach over his body, and wrapped a rope around his neck. In a follow-up interview with police, Smollett claimed that the two men shouted “MAGA country”—a reference to President Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan.

Despite mounting questions about the veracity of Smollett’s account, it wasn’t until this Saturday that the Chicago Police Department publicly confirmed that Smollett was no longer being investigated as a victim but as a suspect in an investigation as to whether he had staged the attack. And now, the charge has been filed. It’s not the last step by far—but it does mean that police could not substantiate Smollett’s claims.

Production Halted On ‘Friends And Family Hustle’ After T.I.’s Sister Injured In Car Accident

T.I. and Tiny have shuttered production of their reality show, Friends & Family Hustle because the rapper’s sister (and cast member) was involved in a serious car crash.

We’ve learned that last Wednesday,  T.I. and Tiny halted production after learning that, Precious Harris, was injured badly earlier that morning. The incident also triggered an asthma attack for Precious.

Here’s MORE via TMZ:

It’s unclear what led to the car crash but here’s what we know … sources say Precious hit a pole, which triggered an asthma attack. The 66-year-old — who often appears on the show — was taken to a hospital where she’s now in ICU. Her exact condition is unknown.

We’re told Tip and Tiny were devastated and decided it was best not to move forward until Precious pulled through. T.I.’s incredibly close to his sister and so is Tiny.

For Precious’ 66th birthday bash last May, Tiny gave her a shout-out and said, “I hope you know how much u mean to me. Always been my road dawg. Love u much! Hope you enjoyed your day!!”

Report: Jussie Smollett Staged Attack After Racist Letter Didn’t Get ‘Bigger Reaction’

Richard Shotwell/AP

“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett reportedly staged an attack against himself in late January after a “racist” letter sent to the TV show’s studio, which contained a white powder, did not get a “bigger reaction,” according to a local Chicago news station.

A source told CBS Chicago the actor allegedly “concocted” the “staged” Jan. 29 attack and paid his “acquaintances”—brothers Ola and Abel Osundairo—over $ 3,000 to carry it out.

Smollett reportedly opened the letter on Jan. 22 at Chicago’s Cinespace Studios, and the white powder prompted a HAZMAT team to respond. Chicago Police Department told the news station that the substance turned out to be asprin. Cinespace Studios would not comment to The Daily Beast about the incident. Fox, “Empire’s” network, also declined to provide comment or confirmation.

French Sexist Cyberbully Journalists Exposed After a Decade of Disgusting Misogyny

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

PARIS, France — In this country often painted as a churlish holdout against political correctness, there is something about the recently exposed online “Ligue du LOL” that is particularly insidious and particularly French.

The LOL (Laugh Out Loud) League, as it would be called in English, was a band of toxic bros who first came together as a private Facebook group in 2009 and used Twitter to conduct a campaign of harassment and cyberbullying with what was for years complete impunity. The Ligue targeted mostly women, but also gay men and ethnic minorities. Its members? Young journalists at the forefront of France’s brave new digital media world.

The profiles of these men didn’t fit with what we’ve come to expect from people who behave badly online. They weren’t too young to know better and they weren’t friendless losers venting their anonymous anger in the only forum open to them. These were increasingly successful men who ran Twitter accounts under different names, but had the arrogance to render some easily identifiable, unable to keep from bragging about their associations and successes in their Twitter bios. All the while, they selected their targets and tailored their attacks for maximum psychological destruction.

Andy Cohen Claps Back at Dad-Shamers After His Dog Chew Up Son’s Toy

It seems like everyone’s a critic. Andy Cohen was dad-shamed by people across the internet after he posted footage of himself reprimanding his dog for chewing up one of his newborn son Benjamin’s toys.

“Did you just eat my son’s stuffed Torah that the rabbi gave him, Wacha?” Cohen, 50, could be heard asking his canine in a clip posted on his Instagram Stories on Friday, February 15. “And now you’re exhausted? That was my son’s Torah.”

The Bravo personality, who welcomed his first child via surrogate on February 4, continued in another clip: “Did you wanna explain to my son what you did? And what do I tell the rabbi? Wacha, Wacha!”

The two back-to-back videos show the beagle-foxhound mix laying on his side among the cotton stuffing from the Jewish scripture toy in question. Wacha doesn’t flinch; instead, he stares wide-eyed into the camera with only an occasional blink for movement.

Within a few hours, the Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen host said he was “flooded with DMs” from people saying he has a “big problem” on his hands: Fans believe Cohen’s four-legged friend is “jealous” of his infant.

“Wacha didn’t know that the Torah toy … belonged to the baby,” the new father said in defense of his pup. “He just had his eye on this purple f–king toy and wanted to rip it apart. It’s not that deep. Stand down.”

Cohen concluded his series of Stories with a video of Wacha licking his face. “Hey, I’ve been a dad for 12 days,” he told the dog. “People are judge-y as f–k. We gotta be careful, OK? Sometimes a Torah toy is just a Torah toy, everybody!”

Earlier this week, the Superficial author celebrated the most love-filled holiday of the year with his new baby and his furry pal. “TWO Valentines! Lucky me,” Cohen captioned a sweet shot of him holding the pair in his arms on Instagram on Thursday, February 14.

The proud father announced his child’s birth shortly after the little one entered the world. “WOW! This is my son, Benjamin Allen Cohen. He is 9 lbs 2 ounces !! 20 inches !! Born at 6:35 pm, PT,” Cohen captioned a picture of himself cradling his newborn via Instagram.

The Real Housewives executive producer, who named the baby after his grandfather, said he was “in love … speechless … and eternally grateful” for his “incredible surrogate.”

Kaiser Permanente to Help Colorado Schools Build Resilience After Traumatic Events

DENVER — Every day, teachers interact with children who experience traumatic life events ranging from abuse and neglect to a natural disaster or the death of someone close. The effects of others’ trauma can negatively impact work and home life. To help improve the well-being of Colorado teachers, Kaiser Permanente is launching a locally-developed mental health and wellness program — the Resilience in School Environments Understanding and Practice (RISE UP) — in schools across the state.

RISE UP is a complementary learning session for school staff, administrators, and teachers, designed to foster resilience and support school staff as they work with traumatized students. The program helps school staff members develop systems to take care of themselves and support their own wellness.

“Kaiser Permanente has long recognized the need to care for the mental and physical health of students, staff, and teachers in the communities we serve,” said Curtis Robbins, Kaiser Permanente lead for community health, and RISE UP program architect. “Through RISE UP, we’re providing staff and teachers with the resources they need to foster a positive school climate that embraces trauma-sensitive interactions to make for better and safer learning environments for all students.”

RISE UP is a 2-hour session facilitated by Kaiser Permanente that uses theatre and interactive learning to engage participants in discovery and practical application. It is designed to provide a safe place to practice, question, discover, and learn through discussion, peer interaction, and self-reflection.

RISE UP participants are encouraged to reflect on the importance of building stronger relationships with all students — particularly those who’ve experienced trauma — while learning resiliency and other skills that can be used in student interactions. Staff and teachers are asked to draw on real-life situations to adapt their resiliency techniques to better meet the needs of their students.

“By using these real-life examples, we hope to help teachers and staff see what they did right and where they can improve not just for the sake of their students, but for themselves and their colleagues, too,” said Robbins.

The program, which is blossoming out of an initial pilot phase from 2018, has seen impressive results with educators and administrators. A survey was given to teachers and school staff at the 4 participating school districts during the pilot phase. Highlights from the survey include:

  • 84 percent of participants reported that they learned how to develop stronger relationship with students
  • 84 percent of participants reported feeling confident in their ability to develop stronger relationships with students who have experienced trauma
  • 78 percent of participants indicated they felt more connected to their colleagues after the session

The positive impact RISE UP is having in local Colorado schools is one reason Kaiser Permanente is expanding the program nationally throughout 2019. Kaiser Permanente RISE UP workshops will also be offered in Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Georgia, Northern California, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. RISE UP is part of Kaiser Permanente’s national Thriving Schools work, which promotes the health of young people by helping them establish lifelong patterns of healthy behavior.

The following Colorado schools will participate in the RISE UP project in the early 2019 school year:

  • Prospect Ridge Academy, Broomfield, Colorado
  • Upper Blue Elementary/Breckenridge Elementary, Breckenridge, Colorado
  • Silverthorne Elementary, Silverthorne, Colorado

MEGAN Barton Hanson broke down in tears as she opened up about her “really tough few weeks” in an emotional Instagram Story earlier this evening.

The 24-year-old beauty admitted that she had struggled coming home to her empty flat alone as she expressed her heartache at her split from Wes Nelson last month.

Megan remained off-camera throughout the multiple posts, instead filming her darkened bedroom as she spoke to her followers.

Regularly sniffing, and with her voice cracking at times, the Love Island star explained: “I’ve never done this before, posted anything when I am feeling really c***, but I always preach about mental health and not just showing your highlights on Instagram and it’s been a really tough few weeks.

“I have been filming for two days solid so my mind has been constantly busy and now I’ve come back to this new flat I’ve moved into alone and it’s just sad.

“I’m back to complete silence and….”

Megan remained off-camera throughout the story

The star continued: “I just longed for a boyfriend or a partner for years, before Love Island, and I thought I’d found the one and it’s just difficult.

“Everyone is like ‘you need to be happy in yourself’, and I am, and that’s what’s sad.

“I feel like I am at such a place in my life where I am so content and happy and I just want to share these memories and create a little life and empire with someone else.”

Megan went on to justify why she had posted the emotional video to her page, sharing: “Everyone always puts on their best nights out… Going on their holiday… But this is real life.

“I am so blessed and I have had such an amazing time since I left the villa but there’s always times where you feel alone and sad and I just wanted to share with you.

“It’s not all happiness and positivity all the time.”

She followed up with a written message that read: “Love me or hate me, I wanted to share that and show you despite people’s circumstances life is up and down for us all.

“It’s okay to feel down sometimes. Take a second, dust yourself off, breath, and focus on the future.”

Megan broke up with her Love Island boyfriend last month after growing jealous of his relationship with his professional Dancing On Ice partner, Vanessa Bauer.

REI Chief Executive Jerry Stritzke Resigns After Investigation into Undisclosed Relationship

The chief executive and president of Recreational Equipment, Inc., Jerry Stritzke, abruptly resigned Tuesday, REI announced in a statement. The company’s board accepted Stritzke’s resignation “following an investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding a personal and consensual relationship between the REI CEO and the leader of another organization in the outdoor industry.” The investigation, which found no evidence of financial misconduct, was conducted by an external law firm and overseen by REI’s board of directors.

The company announced that Eric Artz, REI’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, will take on the role of interim CEO effective immediately. In an open letter to REI employees, REI board chair Steve Hooper praised Stritzke’s drive and innovative contributions to the company since taking over as president in October 2013. “Jerry has been an excellent CEO for REI and together, all of you have delivered outstanding results for the co-op during remarkably challenging times in retail,” Hooper wrote, adding, “The co-op is stronger today than when Jerry joined.”

Kent, Wash.-based REI was founded in 1938, an early pioneer in outdoor retail that now has 147 stores in 36 states. The company has been repeatedly ranked by Fortune as a best place to work, and measures such as REI’s Black Friday closures and million-dollar investments in initiatives that demonstrate the relationship between being outdoors and good health are often cited as evidence of its progressive workplace culture at the member-owned cooperative.

Whole Foods is raising prices less than two years after Amazon’s acquisition

Whole Foods raising prices

Depending on who you ask, Whole Foods is continuing to live up to the unfortunate nickname — “Whole Paycheck” — that cost-conscious shoppers bestowed on it. We’re referring in this case to a leaked email obtained by The Wall Street Journal, which showed that even with Amazon’s deep pockets, Whole Foods is apparently quietly rising prices on many items. The reason being — well, even Whole Foods is not immune to challenges facing its industry peers, with the leaked email noting that the grocer feels the need to keep hiking prices to cover rising costs.

Rapper Calls Childish Gambino ‘House Slave’ After Grammy Win

Childish Gambino/Donald Glover might want to put his lawyer on speed dial ’cause rapper Jase Harley appears to be getting ready to come for him in the wake of Gambino winning big at the recent Grammys.

Harley is straight up calling Gambino a “house slave” because he now thinks his song “American Pharoah” was ripped off by the actor/singer/rapper.

A TMZ camera guy caught up to Harley on Monday in NYC and learned he was upset with the Childish one because earned he 4 Grammys, including Record of the Year, for his huge hit, “This Is America,” among other top accolades during Sunday night’s award show.

Here’s more via TMZ:

It’s a bit tough to follow Jase’s logic, but he apparently feels Gambino set black culture back by not attending the show and speaking on behalf of the racial issues he raises in the song … and, perhaps most importantly, not acknowledging Jase as an inspiration.

This was a thing a few months back when the song first dropped — people accused Gambino of ripping Jase off, ’cause ‘TIA’ sounds a lot like Jase’s track, “American Pharaoh.”

At the time, Jase appeared to be chill with the whole situation … and even said he was “extremely humbled” that ‘Pharoah’ might’ve served as an influence for Gambino.

Well, it looks like all that is out the window now — ’cause Jase makes a very controversial analogy that invokes slavery.

Like we said up top, it appears that Mr. Jase is strongly considering some legal action against Mr. Gambino who we would strongly urge to lawyer up.

This Baseball Team Wants to Rewrite ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ After Going Peanut-Free

A Connecticut minor league baseball team is banning peanuts and Cracker Jack from its stadium to protect fans with food allergies — and it’s even rewriting a classic ballpark song because of it.

As of the 2019 season, the Hartford Yard Goats will no longer sell peanut products at Dunkin’ Donuts Park, according to a team announcement. While other teams have hosted peanut-free nights or maintained peanut-free sections, team officials said they believe they are the first to implement a full ban.

The decision came after Kerry Adamowicz and other local parents approached team officials about their children’s food allergies. Adamowicz’ two-year-old son, Sam, has a life-threatening peanut allergy, and the new policy means he can grow up a baseball fan, she told NBC Connecticut.

“It’s a huge relief,” Adamowicz said. “It’s a really good feeling to come to the park and know that’s one stress that is taken away and we can breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy baseball.”

As many as 2.5% of U.S. children are allergic to peanuts, an increase of 21% since 2010, according to a recent estimate from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. A recent study also estimated that about 4.5 million adults are allergic to peanuts, and 3 million are allergic to tree nuts.

Yard Goats President Tim Restall told the Hartford Courant that helping kids and adults with peanut allergies to enjoy the game is more important than selling peanut products.

“The way we look at it, if we eliminate this one item to allow kids to enjoy a baseball game, that’s what it all comes down to,” Restall said. “Why prevent someone from catching a foul ball or getting a picture with [mascots] Chompers and Chew Chew because of a food item?”

And while General Manager Mike Abramson admitted to NBC Connecticut that the team would likely get “flak” for the decision, it’s taking it in stride.

The team is even sponsoring a contest to rewrite the “peanuts and Cracker Jack” lyric in “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and the winning submission will be sung at the park this season, the Courant reports.

Five Days After a Crash, Lindsey Vonn Wins Bronze Medal in Final Race of Her Career

(ARE, Sweden) — Lindsey Vonn walked off with her career haul of medals in her right hand, the gold, silver and bronze clinking together almost weighing her down.

Or was it the bulging knee braces and metal support rods inside her vast array of broken bones?

Whatever it was, the sound was a reminder of what Vonn has come to symbolize — an athlete who battled back from one major injury after another throughout her career to win more ski races than any other woman.

Add one more — final — comeback to the list.

Five days after crashing in super-G — a fall that knocked the wind out of her and left her with a black eye and a bruised rib — and three months after tearing a ligament in her left knee, Vonn won the bronze medal in the world championship downhill Sunday in the final race of her career.

She’s shed so many tears that there are none left — just like she no longer has any cartilage in her knees.

“I’m literally tapped out, I can’t cry anymore,” Vonn said. “I want to cry but it’s dry. … It’s not an easy thing to feel your bones hitting together and continue to push through it.

“Of course I’m sore. Even before the crash I was sore. So I’m just sore on top of sore. My neck is killing me,” Vonn said. “But at the end of the day no one cares if my neck hurts; they only care if I win. … I knew that I was capable of pushing through the pain one last time and I did that. … Every athlete has their own obstacles and I faced mine head on today and I conquered them.”

Vonn had been planning on retiring in December but she recently moved up her plans due to persistent pain in both of her surgically repaired knees. Then came the super-G crash, when she straddled a gate in midair, flew face first down the mountain and slammed into the safety nets.

“She has been business as usual this whole week, saying I’m racing to win,” said Karin Kildow, Vonn’s sister. “I was like, ‘Just maybe make it down and maybe stand up.’ But she was like, ‘No, I’m going full out’. She was definitely in the mindset to push it and she really did.”

It’s a medal that brings Vonn full circle: the American’s two silvers at the 2007 worlds on the same course in Are were the first two major championship medals of her career.

“I was weighing in my mind the risk of putting it all out there, crashing and getting injured again, as opposed to finishing where I wanted to,” Vonn said. “It was an internal battle.”

As soon as she exited the finish area, Vonn embraced Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark, the only skier to win more World Cup races than she did — 86 to 82.

“I basically begged him to come here via text, in all caps, many exclamation points,” Vonn said. “He’s an icon and a legend in our sport and he doesn’t really like the spotlight but he deserves to have it. I was just so grateful that he was there. Honestly, it’s a perfect ending to my career.”

The third skier on the course, Vonn had a big smile on her face when she came down with the fastest run to that point. She waved and bowed to the crowd.

Eventually, Ilka Stuhec of Slovenia beat Vonn and took gold, defending her title from the 2017 worlds. Stuhec finished 0.23 seconds ahead of silver medalist Corinne Suter of Switzerland and 0.49 ahead of Vonn.

“Not many were counting on (Vonn) to get the medal in her last race, which makes it even more special,” Stuhec said. “She has won everything.”

Vonn became the first female skier to win medals at six different world championships. It’s also her fifth downhill medal at a worlds, matching the record established by Annemarie Moser-Proell and Christel Cranz.

“Thank You Lindsey: Forever A Star,” read one sign positioned by the side of the course.

Four U.S. flags were in the grandstand when Vonn came down and there were quite a few cheers when she started her run wearing a suit with blue-and-yellow trim — Sweden’s colors — to honor Stenmark.

“She really deserves this sendoff from her great career,” said Eleanor Bodin, a 21-year-old fan from Sweden who was holding up a sign saying “Thank You Lindsey.”

“She has been my favorite skier since 2008 when I saw her winning on television,” Bodin said. “I was a little girl sitting on the sofa. I just thought what a great skier and inspiration.”

At 34, Vonn eclipsed her own record from two years ago for oldest woman to win a medal at a worlds.

Fog and wind forced organizers to shorten the course to the second reserve start, which favored Vonn because it reduced the strain on her knees.

Now she can finally let her body heel and move onto the next phase of her life — possibly acting, having children, starting a business .

“I’m looking forward to just chilling out a bit and recovering everything, including my mind,” Vonn said. “It’s been a lot to process.

“The nice thing is that, in the real world I’m actually pretty young. I have felt really old for a long time, because I’m racing with girls that are like 15 years younger than me. So now, in the real world, I’m normal. Thirty is the new 20 so I’m super young. I’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

What I’ve learned about sex after 10 years of marriage

What I’ve learned about sex after 10 years of marriage

What I’ve learned about sex after 10 years of marriage

It’s no secret that I never intended to get married. I never even dreamed about my wedding day as a young girl. Yet, when I met my husband in my junior year of high school, our meeting was shortly followed by the realization, “Crap, I’m probably going to marry this guy.”

Though he was totally different than me, my not-yet-husband complemented me completely. Suddenly, the idea of marriage—or any long-term relationship—didn’t seem so bad. When we eventually did get married, I didn’t find it stifling to be with him. Instead, I was made better by being around him, and it felt like I did the same for him. Though I still know that marriage isn’t for everyone, in a lot of ways, being married has made me a gentler, happier, and wiser person.

One of the topics it has made me more knowledgeable about is sex. Specifically, there are a few truths that I’ve learned after 10 years of marriage. Some of these came to me as epiphanies while others were learned over years of discovering who I am and who my husband is, inside and outside of our sex lives. Embracing these lessons has helped me to grow and thoroughly enjoy my married sex life.

1. Great sex takes time.

I didn’t have my first orgasm until five years into my relationship—shortly after getting married and while pregnant for the first time. Though my husband and I started having sex months into dating, we didn’t really know what we were doing. Neither of us embraced the self-discovery part of our teenage years. All we really knew about sex was the basics, and that we should always pee afterwards. (Shout out to our high school biology teacher for this bit of wisdom that’s kept me UTI-free for 15 years.)

Basically, it took time for us to figure out what we liked and didn’t like. It took time to develop a sexual relationship that was more than just okay. It wasn’t until we allowed ourselves to become more sexually adventurous that our sex life really clicked.

We often hear that, after several years of marriage, people become bored with their sex lives. I’ve discovered the opposite. After being married for 10 years and with my husband for a total of 15, I’m more interested in our sex lives than ever. Which ties into the second lesson I’ve learned.

2. Asking for what you like can save so much stress

You might assume that, if you know what you want, you’re going to ask for it. However, there are plenty of us who have a problem with this concept. In fact, it’s such a common problem that the National Coalition for Sexual Health provides scripts on its website to help lovers speak to each other about wants and needs in the bedroom. Called the Five Action Steps to Good Sexual Health, these tools offer couples the ability to communicate about topics they would otherwise avoid.

Learning my preferences wasn’t as hard as asking for what I wanted. Asking felt like putting myself out there. It made me feel even more vulnerable than I felt when I had sex for the first time. Focusing the attention on myself instead of just hoping for a good shared experience felt shameful. Women often feel the need to follow the lead of their partners, and I did the same. But instead of putting the expectations on my husband to read my mind—which I was definitely guilty of doing at the beginning of our relationship—I had to accept responsibility for my own satisfaction.

However, it’s important to remember that sexual communication is a learned skill, not an inherent talent. While I was able to talk to my husband about birth control, sexual expectations, and my dislikes, it was a lot harder for me to actively ask for what I wanted. I had to work up to that, but it helped knowing that I’m more of a verbal communicator while my husband is more physical. I began giving my husband short and direct feedback in the moment of having sex, and it made me feel in control during an unguarded, vulnerable learning time. Then I began showing him what I wanted while telling him what I wanted, which helped my husband learn.

Being vulnerable was scary but it was essential to our sexy life. I know that allowing myself to be vulnerable in the bedroom has also made it easier to open up in other parts of our relationship.

3. Most media does married sex a disservice.

TV and movies don’t usually paint sex for married heterosexual couples in a positive light—and they’re wrong for this. We’re taught a few toxic lessons under what is usually the guise of comedy. For example, the trope of the frigid, no-nonsense wife who withholds sex to punish her husband is a tired favorite of sitcom writers. It teaches us that sex can and should be weaponized in a monogamous relationship. While no one is guaranteed or entitled to sex, withholding affection as a form of punishment isn’t funny. Teaching people that it’s a normal part of married life is irresponsible.

This common depiction of heterosexual sex in marriage also insinuates that sex is not as important to women as it is to men. While sex is portrayed as a regular human reaction and a regular human need for husband characters, the wives are coded as cold and inhuman. It paints these women as the antagonists in their marriages, a dangerous mentality to enforce.

In my experience, after 10 years of marriage, sex is as important to me as it is to my husband. Yes, his libido is higher than mine—always has been—but withholding sex as a punishment would hurt us both emotionally and physically. Besides setting a toxic tone of monetizing affection, it would condition my husband to think that sex isn’t important to me. And, if it isn’t important to me, why should my sexual satisfaction be important to him?

4. Children change sex—but not in the way you think.

Another trope that is super common to hear about longstanding relationships is that having kids changes your sex life. More to the point, it’s often inferred that they ruin it. I can’t speak for every mom, but having kids has definitely changed my sex life—though not in the ways I thought they would.

With three kids—currently aged 6-10—I have a lot on my plate. Earlier in their lives, I had help from my parents, but there was always a strict “no overnight babysitting” rule put in place. On top of that, we’ve always co-slept, with our youngest still bunking with us more often than not. Sleep deprivation has definitely been a factor in our lives for the last 10 years, but we couldn’t let sleepless nights and kiddos in our bed impact our sexual happiness.

Instead, we had to get creative. Knowing that sex isn’t always an option for us during the night in our bed, we learned to take advantage of any time and place we could steal some intimacy throughout he day. Not having a lot of time also encouraged us to learn what personally creates the quickest and most satisfying sex for us. When you’ve only got 10 minutes before a kid comes barging into the room or a few moments between dinner and bedtime, knowing what works best saves precious time.

5. Sex and other love languages are vital.

Learning how someone shows their love for you will help you to pick up on important emotional queues. For my relationship in particular, sex is a major love language. My husband isn’t someone who is very vocal with his thoughts and feelings. Someone who rarely deals in absolutes, my husband doesn’t feel comfortable expressing himself with words that can be easily misconstrued. For that reason, sexual contact is a clear way to understand how he’s feeling without my own emotions clouding his.

At first, I didn’t understand this. Though I was glad he always seemed so sexually interested in me, I also felt reduced to a mere sexual being. The same way he expressed his love for me through touch and physical love, I expressed mine through verbal communication and non-sexual contact. Eventually, we allowed ourselves to talk about this. We discussed how I need to be valued on more than a sexual level and how he feels most understood while showing instead of telling.

I’m glad to say that this understanding merged into a new love language for us as a couple. We take baths together a few times every week, which lets us recharge our relationship on an emotional and physical level. When the kids have gone to sleep, we slip into our garden tub where we download with each other while enjoying the intimacy of a relaxing bath. He shaves my legs; I tell him about the day’s news. He washes my hair; I suggest weekend plans. During a time in our relationship where communication and privacy are often hard to find, our love languages evolved to find a way.

My husband and I still argue sometimes. I can still be overly aggressive when I’m disappointed and he’s still passive aggressive when he feels talked down to. We have disagreements about his mother, my sister, our children…but our sex life hasn’t ever been a focus of a fight. What I’ve learned most after 10 years of marriage is that any relationship built on passion and strengthened through communication, mutual respect, and a little creativity will be a happy one.

Joy Behar Under Fire After Photo of Her in Blackface Resurfaces

NEW YORK — Joy Behar and ABC were silent Thursday after an old photo resurfaced of “The View” co-host using makeup to darken her skin for a Halloween costume, the latest flashpoint in a series of blackface scandals making national headlines.

The 76-year-old didn’t mention the clip on Thursday’s show, one day after an editor for the entertainment website The Wrap tweeted the three-year-old segment of Behar discussing a resurgence of curly hair.

During the 2016 segment, Behar displayed a 1970s-era photo of herself at a Halloween party when she was 29. She says that the hair was her own and that she had dressed as a “beautiful African woman.”

Co-host Raven-Symone asked whether she had on tanning lotion. Behar, an outspoken liberal, said she wore makeup “that was a little bit darker than my skin.”

Messages seeking comment were not returned from Behar’s agent and the ABC program.

Critics were quick to point out that NBC cut ties with host Megyn Kelly last year after she created a furor by suggesting that it was OK for white people to wear blackface on Halloween.

This week, Virginia’s governor and attorney general are being criticizedfor their use of blackface. Florida Secretary of State Michael Ertel resigned last month after a photo surfaced showing him wearing blackface and dressing as a “Hurricane Katrina victim.”

Other white celebrities who have been called out for using blackface include Julianne Hough, who in 2012 dressed as characters from Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” and “Real Housewives of New York” star LuAnn De Lesseps, who dressed as Diana Ross for Halloween in 2017.

BAFTA has suspended a Best Director nomination after sexual assault allegations

‘BAFTA considers the alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values’

Award season is in full swing, with the British Academy Film and Television Arts awards taking place this weekend.

But it wasn’t Lady Gaga’s potential ‘100 people in a room’ speech or the goodie bags and five star makeover jets flying A-listers in that got the world talking about the BAFTAs this week.

Instead, the award show made news as the Academy suspended a key nomination, just days before the ceremony.

Bohemian Rhapsody director Bryan Singer became subject to allegations last month, as a report published by The Atlantic saw four men come forward to accuse him of having sex with them when they were under age. All incidents reportedly took place in the 1990s while the men were teenagers.

While Singer has denied the allegations, it was announced this week that his BAFTA nomination had been rescinded.

‘In light of recent very serious allegations, BAFTA has informed Bryan Singer that his nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody has been suspended, effective immediately,’ BAFTA announced in a statement.

‘BAFTA considers the alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values. This has led to Mr Singer’s suspended nomination. BAFTA notes Mr Singer’s denial of the allegations. The suspension of his nomination will therefore remain in place until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved.’

The statement concluded: ‘BAFTA believes everyone has the right to a fulfilling career in a safe, professional working environment, and it will continue to collaborate with the film, games and television industries to achieve this.’

The Academy has announced however that Bohemian Rhapsody ‘remains nominated in the Outstanding Film category’.

The BAFTAs is due to take place on Sunday 10 February.
