3 Ways to Evacuate Ahead of a Hurricane If You Don’t Have a Lot of Money

As a Florida native who yawned while Hurricane Matthew crawled up the eastern coastline of Florida two years ago, I never thought I’d find myself caught up in the usual hysteria.

After all, I’d dealt with major storms before as a local reporter: I’d trudged through knee-deep waters after Tropical Storm Debby pounded Siesta Key in 2012 and photographed college students kayaking the streets of Longboat Key during Tropical Storm Colin four years later.

But Hurricane Harvey, and the devastation it brought to Houston, changed all that.

So there I was in September of last year, waiting three hours in line in south St. Petersburg, Florida, to fill my own sandbags. I watched as news poured in about a run on water, gas and batteries as Hurricane Irma bore down on the state.

Luckily, I had already put together most of my disaster-preparedness kit, and on a budget at that.

But next came the big question: Should I stay or should I go?

Ask Yourself: Do You Actually Need to Evacuate?

“Run from the water. Hide from the wind.”

That’s the refrain Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Ed McCrane repeats every time a tropical cyclone threatens the vulnerable Gulf Coast county.

If you live in a home in a newer subdivision, or at least one that’s been built under current construction guidelines, and have hurricane shutters, you shouldn’t worry about the high winds. The storm surge and flooding will be the biggest threat to your home, McCrane said.

If you’re in a flood zone, you should be prepared to evacuate as a hurricane approaches. Check your county’s emergency management website to determine if you fall in an evacuation zone.

You should also plan to flee the storm if you live in a mobile home park or manufactured home.

For some, it’s just a matter of gassing up the SUV and heading to a hotel in another state if they want to evacuate. But what if you don’t have the luxury?

It may be slim pickings, but there are three resources for people who want to evacuate ahead of a hurricane.

1. Hurricane Shelters Could Be Your Best Bet

Hurricane shelters are there for a reason.

They are usually schools built under strict new construction guidelines that make them the safest place for your family and pets. Yes, your county should have a pet-friendly shelter available, McCrane said.

But what should you actually schlep with you over to the local shelter?

Bring everything you would need for your emergency kit at home, plus a few things to make yourself comfortable: pillows, blankets or air mattresses; folding or lawn chairs; extra clothing, shoes and glasses; toothpaste, deodorant and other hygiene supplies; important papers, identification and family keepsakes; extra medication; and toys or games to keep the kids — and yourselves — sane.

And if you have any furry family members, don’t forget your pet emergency kit.

Also, your insurance policy will be your golden ticket after the storm, so don’t forget that either.

Keep an eye on your local media stations to see when shelters open — don’t assume.

2. Reconnect With Friends and Relatives

Who says a natural disaster can’t be a good time to catch up with old friends?

Forget about paying inflated hotel room costs — let alone finding availability — and reach out to friends and family to see if they have an extra room or couch on which to crash.

“All you have to do is go tens of miles, not hundreds of miles,” McCrane said.

If you have to travel further than a few miles, bring plenty of cash in case ATMs are down and a filled gas can, if possible. Make sure to follow specific instructions like these on how to safely transport it. You’ll want to strap it to the top of your vehicle or secure it in the bed of a truck.

That way you’ll have an emergency stash if gas stations along the highway begin running out, and you can take advantage of current gas prices.

Bring everything mentioned above that you would take to a shelter, and make sure to let as many family members as you can know where you’re headed.

3. Look for an Airbnb

In 2012, Airbnb launched Open Homes, a disaster relief program that encourages Airbnb hosts to provide free temporary shelter for those affected by natural disasters.

Airbnb currently has open homes available for those affected by Tropical Storm Gordon.

The company has not yet announced open homes available for Hurricane Florence — but the storm is expected to make landfall later this week, so be sure you have those emergency kits ready (with lots of water).

But the best advice we have as you prepare your supplies and decide whether to evacuate is not to panic.

As we reach the peak of this year’s hurricane season, we’re reminded of the guidance offered by St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman last year as Hurricane Irma approached:

“I know we’re all on edge, but another important reminder as we prepare for Hurricane Irma — let’s be nice to each other. It costs nothing.”

Alex Mahadevan is a data journalist at The Penny Hoarder. He covered hurricanes and tropical storms for five years in Sarasota, Florida.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

The True Story Behind Woman Walks Ahead

The movie Woman Walks Ahead — opening Friday, starring Jessica Chastain, Michael Greyeyes and Sam Rockwell — centers on what might seem like a minor moment in history: the 19th century efforts of Catherine Weldon, a white woman from Brooklyn, to paint a portrait of Lakota Sioux Chief Sitting Bull. But the story of the painting, which plays a much smaller role in the real history of Sitting Bull and Weldon than it does in the movie, is actually a window into a pivotal moment in American history.

Here’s what to know about the real people and historical events that inspired the movie.

Who Was Sitting Bull?

One of history’s most famous Native American leaders, he’s most well known today for defeating General George Custer’s army at The Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in what was then Montana Territory. The confrontation was sparked by Custer’s troops discovering gold in the Sioux-controlled Black Hills, now in South Dakota, in 1874. The Sioux emerged victorious, and about 260 U.S. soldiers are thought to have died in what’s sometimes called Custer’s Last Stand.

Sitting Bull became famous after the battle through his role in Buffalo Bill Cody’s variety show Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Though such shows were founded on the exploitation of stereotypical ideas, they were also a chance for Native Americans to make money and meet people who may be sympathetic to their cause, according to the National Museum of the American Indian.

Who Was Catherine Weldon?

She had several different identities. As explained by the book that inspired the movie, Eileen Pollack’s Woman Walking Ahead: In Search of Catherine Weldon and Sitting Bull, she was born Susanna Faesch in Switzerland in 1838 and immigrated to Brooklyn, N.Y. when she was 33. She first married a Swiss doctor, Claude Schlatter, and after they divorced married Richard Weldon in 1878. They had a son, but that marriage didn’t last either. After the divorce, she made her living selling her embroidery. (She was not a widow, as the movie suggests.)

Though her personal life could be chaotic, she found her purpose in advocating for Native American rights as a member of the National Indian Defense Association.

Why Did She Visit Sitting Bull?

What exactly prompted Weldon to travel to see Sitting Bull is unknown, but her biography provides several clues. Native American culture was a subject of fascination in Switzerland during the time of her youth, and Pollack says that after she came to the U.S. she might have been inspired to action by the newspaper coverage of the Indians losing their land during westward expansion.

The Dawes Act of 1887 confined the Sioux to smaller reservations, and the reduced land led to food scarcity and rationing. The buffalo were gone. The policy was “the white man’s effort to remake Indians as white men in all but color,” says Robert M. Utley, author of Sitting Bull: The Life and Times of an American Patriot and former National Park Service historian. By forcing Native Americans to live on designated farm plots, Utley explains, Washington moved toward the dual dubious goals of “civilizing” Indians and also opening up what had been their land to white settlement.

Sitting Bull traveled to Washington, D.C., for negotiations about fair prices for the land in October 1888, and Weldon began corresponding with him shortly after. According to Pollack, their letters — which don’t survive today but were mentioned in other Weldon papers — contained details of these talks, fair prices for Dakota land and maps of the government’s plans to reduce the size of the tribes’ reservations.

Pollack tells TIME that Weldon, 52 years old at this point, went to Standing Rock (in June 1889 and again in May 1890) first and foremost to be Sitting Bull’s “advocate and translator.” The scene in the movie in which Weldon, who was not very wealthy, gives her money and possessions to feed the hungry people is fairly accurate. The people she helped rewarded her with a name: “Woman Walking Ahead.” But the four portraits of Sitting Bull she painted during that time were not the main reason she went out there, contrary to the impression some might get from watching the film.

“[To Sitting Bull], that differentiated her from other whites — her generosity,” Pollack says. “She didn’t save anybody but she helped.”

Were Sitting Bull and Catherine Weldon Romantically Involved?

It’s an understandable question watching the Sitting Bull character de-robe in front of Weldon in a tent in the film.

“There was some romantic tension,” Pollack says. “There’s evidence that he proposed marriage.”

But, Pollack says, the record shows that Weldon wasn’t interested in marrying Sitting Bull (who had two wives) and maintained their relationship as his friend, lobbyist and helper.

What Was the Ghost Dance?

Though it plays a relatively minor role in the movie — Weldon and Sitting Bull emerge from the tent and see tribe members dancing in a circle around a fire pit, looking up at the sky with their arms outstretched in the air — the Ghost Dance is an important part of the Sitting Bull story. The Ghost Dance was a religious movement that emerged in some Native American communities amid the upheaval in the late 1800s. The practice involved participants donning outfits thought to give them power against bullets and dancing, as historian Mark Hirsch wrote for American Indian magazine, to “hasten the coming of the new world” — a world that was like the way things were before white settlers came. “Lakotas were ready for a message of hope,” Hirsch explained.

Woman Walks Ahead Director Susanna White consulted Native American choreographers and elders to make sure the “ghost dance” was as accurate as possible, and worked off music that had been passed down through generation.

Sitting Bull actually had mixed feelings about the ritual; Utley says that he was skeptical about its ideas but willing to go along on the idea that participants might be onto something. Weldon, on the other hand, worried about how the U.S. government would perceive the movement. And she was right; the white officials watching the Native Americans dancing were scared by it and responded with extreme force.

His resistance to being removed from the reservation for his part in the Ghost Dance led to the attempt to arrest him,” says Utley, “which in turn led to his death.”

Sitting Bull was shot to death by police on Dec. 15, 1890.

Is This the Same Standing Rock?

Yes. The place where Weldon visits Sitting Bull is the same place that made news recently as the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and their allies gathered there to oppose the construction of the Dakota access pipeline for fears that it would contaminate their water supply.

“The Dawes Act ultimately deprived the Sioux of much of their treaty-guaranteed land and confined them to small separate reservations,” Utley writes. “[Sitting Bull] would have applauded their opposition to the Dakota Pipeline. The white man worked at their destruction because of hunger for Indian land and an idealistic concept that Indians should be transformed into imitation white men. The contest lasted for half a century and continues in muted form to this day.”

Earning the Trust of Homeowners: How to Get Ahead of These Top 4 Homeowner Fears

Contractor-client-meeting

Most homeowners enjoy small-scale renovations and often complete basic DIY jobs on their own. But when it comes time for a larger project—and hiring a pro to do the work— many homeowners have a number of concerns and fears about the home renovation process. This makes them wary of placing a stranger in charge of their home improvement projects.

As a home improvement professional, your job is to alleviate these fears and make homeowners comfortable with you and your business. Here are 4 of the top homeowner fears and some ways to help get ahead of them.

Uneasiness and trust issues

For homeowners who haven’t ever hired a professional to complete a home improvement project before, this is uncharted territory. The first time you work with a new client, establishing a positive working relationship is essential if you want to earn their trust.

The easiest way to do this is by keeping lines of communication open and explaining the process from start to finish. Answer any questions your clients might have and speak openly and honestly about their fears—including budgets, timescales, and their expectations about the final product. If they know what to expect, your clients will be more likely to trust you to do a good job.

Cost

Even if your clients are seasoned home renovators, budgeting a home improvement project will probably cause them some stress. This is completely understandable, since homeowners can easily sink a lot of money into their remodeling projects. As a construction professional, you need to help homeowners understand exactly where their money is going and guide them through the decision making process.

Keeping a current pricing structure for your products and services is a great start. Once a client decides to go ahead with a project, prepare an exhaustive estimate of all the building costs (including labor, materials, and other incidentals) and discuss this with them in detail. Finally, show clients some of your past work and reviews, and make sure to add these to your website portfolio. This will help them to feel more comfortable about spending their money on you and to know that you are worth the cost.

Timescale/disruption to home life

After building a trusting relationship with construction professionals and cost, one of the next greatest fears of homeowners embarking on a large scale home improvement project is how the building work will disrupt their home life. Some worries your clients may have include:

  • How long will the project take?
  • Will I be able to use my home in the same way during the building process?
  • Will my home be too dirty to live in?
  • Who is going to be in my home? During what times of day?
  • Will the noise and activity anger my neighbors?

Answering these questions a) honestly and b) before beginning a project should help to alleviate these kinds of fears. After all, a homeowner’s house is still their home even when renovation work is taking place. Good practice for residential building projects includes:

  • Keeping regular hours of work (for example, between the hours of 9am and 5pm)
  • Cleaning up the building site at the end of each working day where possible
  • Giving homeowners the chance to meet builders and subcontractors
  • Providing clients with clear timelines and trying to stick to them as much as possible

Disliking results

After all is said and done, hopefully your clients will be pleased with and pleasantly surprised by the results. However, some homeowners worry that the finished project will be less than perfect and not what they expected. Stress relating to the finished project often includes worries about whether the result will look good and stand the test of time. Homeowners also might worry about failure to complete their project and what they might do if they don’t like the result.

While you can’t predict the future, you can give satisfaction guarantees to your clients. If, for example, they are unhappy with any part of the completed renovation project, try your best to make it right (or compensate them when this is not possible). As far as these other worries are concerned, regular communication throughout the building project should help to keep clients updated and aware of the progress being made and help them to feel confident that their wishes are being taken into account every step of the way.

Money Mondays: Get Ahead Of The Game By Saving For College Early

YOU JOIN US TODAY TO DISCUSS A SURVEY ABOUT COLLEGE SAVINGS. WHAT DOES IT TELL US?

According to Sallie Mae’s 2018 report, How America Saves for College, parents are making progress when it comes to saving for their children’s college education. The report was based on a survey of more than 2,000 parents of children under 18 and found that the average amount saved is $ 18,135. That is 10% more than the $ 16,380 average in 2016 and is the highest level of savings the survey has found since 2013.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS! WHAT ELSE DID THE SURVEY FIND?

There were two additional positive findings in the survey. First, parents are getting more realistic about paying for college. Specifically, many parents are coming to believe that the cost of college shouldn’t fall only on them, especially as the costs rise. Respondents said they expect to cover about one-third of the total cost of their child’s college costs.

Additionally, close to 60 percent of parents said they expected their child to pay for part of their education, up from around 50 percent in 2016. As parents become more realistic about the costs of college and what they can contribute, I believe we can expect to see more of them planning and focusing on other resources, so that is good news.

On top of this, there was another excellent finding in the survey: Parents are shying away from mortgaging their future to pay for their child’s education. Just 10% of parents said they plan to tap their retirement savings for their child’s education, down from 20 percent in 2016. Let’s hope this the start of a trend, Tom. As I have said many times, there are loans for college, but not for retirement.

WERE THERE ANY AREAS OF CONCERN?

Absolutely. First, the cost of college continues to move higher. According to the College Board, the average private nonprofit college charged $ 46,950 for tuition, fees and room and board in the 2017-2018 academic year, it is expected to continue to climb. This means that even as parents are saving more, they are not necessarily making a dent in the overall shortfall.

On top of that, just 39% of respondents reported that they were planning and saving for their child’s college expenses while, 17% said they were saving but not planning, and 44% said they were not saving at all.

Finally, and of particular importance for our community, there continues to be a significant gap between Black and Hispanic parents and white parents when it comes to college savings. The survey found the average college savings for Black respondents was $ 10,702 this year, compared to $ 23,460 for white families. This is another way the persistent wealth gap between Black and white Americans impacts our children’s future.

IF WE ARE ALREADY SAVING FOR COLLEGE, OR WE WANT TO START, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

The most important thing to do is keep saving, or if you haven’t already, to start saving. Once you do, then you want to concentrate on growing that money. The two most common vehicles to do this are 529 plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts. 529 plans are offered in various states and can be used for undergraduate or graduate studies.

In these plans, you’re typically given a menu of investment options to choose from. Keep in mind, 529 plans do come with some restrictions. Funds can be withdrawn tax-free only for qualified education expenses such as tuition, books, and room and board.

Coverdell Education Savings Accounts also allow your investments to grow tax-free, as long as they are used for qualified education expenses. But, money from Coverdell accounts can also be used for K-12 expenses, and you can choose your own investment options.

Coverdell accounts are limited to a maximum of $ 2,000 per year, while 529 plans generally have higher contribution limits. Remember, if funds from 529 plans or Coverdell accounts are not used for qualified education expenses, there can be both taxes and penalties.

Remember, you want to be clear on the goals and objectives for these accounts. Consult your financial advisor to determine which type of account makes the most sense for your situation.

2018 Horoscopes: Your Year Ahead According to Us

Great Things are On the Horizon

ARIES-min

Aries – the Year of Reflection

YEAR OF REFLECTION | ARIES | Ambitious Aries is always at a full sprint; never one to look back. The expression two steps forward one step back is completely foreign because to Aries there are only steps forward.  When you’re going full speed, you miss the scenery flying by and your left with a hollow sense of progress and perspective. For 2018, Aries continue to be driven but get off the motorcycle and get on the tour bus. Keep that sassy head scarf and use it to wave good-bye as you soak in the journey. Looking out is part of looking ahead.

TAURUS-min

Taurus – the Year of Adventure

YEAR OF ADVENTURE | TAURUS | Hey Taurus. How you doing? Are you feeling the rush of a new year upon you? There are miles to log as a year of unbridled adventure lays in wait, and why not take a friend while you are at it. Your patience, reliability and warm heartedness are a trifecta of goodness when you’re navigating an unknown path. Our COAST luggage will be by your side, there for the memory making just beyond the horizon. Go gett’em tiger – or would it be bull?

GEMINI-min

Gemini – the Year of Friendship

YEAR OF FRIENDSHIP | GEMINI | Life is meant to be shared. This year, you’ll find that especially true. Your strong communication skills and sharp intellect will charm those around you and you’ll be juggling a gaggle of new amigos. In other words, you’re rich. And hey, drop us a line, we’re always game for a night out.

CANCER-min

Cancer – the Year of Peace

YEAR OF PEACE | CANCER | 2017 was a bit of a beast – and not the good kind that transforms into something more handsome and palatable. But the good news is, it’s a wrap. This year is ushering in a different more docile mood and you’re more than ready.  You’re known to be cautious, but don’t be too protective. This year will bring about ample opportunity for peaceful reflection that gives you space to put that imagination to good use.

LEO-min

Leo – the Year of Joy

YEAR OF JOY | LEO | Hey there lioness. If 2017 was all about the roar, 2018 will 12 months of purr-fection.  Opportunities to exercise your creative juices, collaborate with your peers and spread that spirit of sass. Keep that bossy at bay and your claws on lockdown, because joy is best caught with a caress.  Best of all, happiness is meant to be shared – and we know how you love sharing.

VIRGO-min

Virgo – the Year of Love

YEAR OF LOVE | VIRGO | Living a life of order is not necessarily conducive to romance. Here me out, Virgo. There are many who enjoy your meticulous ways and ultra-reliable self and an alphabeticalized spice rack. But if there is one thing that isn’t practical, that isn’t orderly and that can’t be labeled, color-coded and filed away – it’s love. So get ready for the beautiful, glorious mess that is other people’s love. Wear something washable – you’ll be fine.

LIBRA_1-min

Libra – the Year of Success

YEAR OF SUCCESS | LIBRA | Being as diplomatic as you are, your route to success has been a scenic one. Never one to elbow your way to the top, you prefer to let your work speak for itself. 2018 will mirror the seeds you’ve sown of patience, character and nose the grindstone blood, sweat and tears. Continue to keep the peace and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You’ve earned it Libra.

SCORPIO-min-2

Scorpio – the Year of Personal Growth

YEAR OF PERSONAL GROWTH| SCORPIO | Scorpios love a secret. But here’s a secret we’ll share… a secret is often a wish unanswered or a wound unhealed. This year use your keen intuition to find those trusted in your tribe to share your secrets with as a cathartic learning exercise. Those that love you will help you heal, transforming those dreams into concrete steps toward a reality. Personal growth? It’s on your doorstep for 2018.

SAGITTARIUS-min

Sagittarius – the Year of Memory Making

YEAR OF MEMORY MAKING | SAGITTARIUS | Sags race toward freedom and their honesty breeds a life of openness. Both these qualities will come into play full force in 2018, as a year of making memories.  What could this possibly mean? Aren’t we making memories every dang day. Yes and no. True memory making happens when you go outside of your comfort zone, see things with new eyes and engage with the moment-in a way so fierce that the imprint of the moment lasts and lasts. Sounds amazing, right?

CAPRICORN-min

Capricorn – the Year of Frivolity

YEAR OF FRIVOLITY | CAPRICORN  | Did you cringe when you read that title? Practically being your middle name – frivolity isn’t something you are overly familiar with. Well take off that seatbelt of discipline and shake out that hair, ‘because things are about to get loose in 2018. For you, a new practice will be put in place – test out saying, “yes” more often. No plan B? No problem. 2018 is about occasionally flying without a safety net and enjoying the ride.

AQUARIUS-min

Aquarius – Year of Healing

YEAR OF HEALING | AQUARIUS | Aquarius’ are notorious givers. But sometimes nurturers need to be nurtured. In 2018, you will refill the well of your own generosity. You will say no sometimes. You will stay home to rest. You will spend on yourself, just because. You will accept, nay – embrace the kindness of others. And, this is the kicker, you will not feel guilty when you do these things.  Because being a healer begins at home.

PISCES-min

Pisces – the Year of Transformation

YEAR OF TRANSFORMATION | PISCES | We all get stuck Pisces. It’s hard to recognize your own comfort zone. And what is a comfort zone except being in your bed an hour after your alarm went off. Stop pressing snooze on your own life. Sometimes when you’re sensitive it’s easy to resist taking the path less travelled but it can be oh-so-worthwhile. Make a pact to fail upward this 2018. Keep climbing, don’t look back and when you reach the next peak – you’ll have a totally different perspective of yourself, a much higher one.

Erykah Badu Offers ‘Soul Therapy’ Ahead Soul Train Awards

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — There’s no question that Erykah Badu is the soul hostess. On Sunday, she’ll host the Soul Train Awards on BET. But earlier this week, she was the soulful host who invited a small group of reporters to a West Hollywood hotel suite for an introductory lesson on chakras.

Badu transformed a room at Le Parc Suite Hotel into an intimate spiritual classroom Monday night for what she described as a “soul therapy” session. Illuminated by candlelight, Badu told her dozen guests about the Eastern concept of chakras — whirling energy centers that stretch from the base of the spine to the crown of the head — and how they respond to music, color and personal development.

Promotional events for awards shows are not usually like this. The show itself was never even mentioned.

Instead, the singer-songwriter engaged the group in a discussion about creativity, opened up about her heroes and revealed that she uses chakra-stimulating sounds in her music. “Baduizm,” her groundbreaking and Grammy-winning 1997 debut, is built around the vibrations of tuning forks and singing bowls, she said. She layered theremin sounds under later recordings.

“I never share any of these kinds of things, that I use tuning forks and singing bowls,” Badu said. “I didn’t know how necessary that was to tell people. And it’s kind of weird to tell people something like that. But we’re entering this age of information where people are more open to this kind of thing… so it’s a good time to share something like this.”

With bells on her ankles, a pile of medallions and crystals around her neck and a stack of colored markers in her hand, Badu explained the seven chakras by diagramming them on a piece of poster board.

Each chakra corresponds with a color of the rainbow, she said, drawing a red circle for the “root chakra” and continuing with spirals in orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple (her favorite color, she noted). Each chakra is also associated with a musical note or vibration, a set of bodily organs and a basic human characteristic, such as creativity, desire or self-discipline, she said.

Badu said she travels with a set of tuning forks, which she pulled from a backpack shaped like an African mask. She clacked one of the forks against a crystal hanging from her neck and held it by each guest’s ear so they could experience its vibration — in the key of F, for the heart chakra.

When the chakra lesson was done, Badu told the group she always considered herself a writer first. She composed her first song at age 7 after her grandmother bought her a piano, and started writing raps and other poetry before becoming a singer.

Asked what song she wishes she had written, Badu said Joni Mitchell’s “Blue.”

“Joni Mitchell is one of my heroes,” she said, adding that they’ve yet to meet. “She’s very responsible for a lot of my honesty and bravery in music.”

Before saying goodnight, Badu offered a last bit of chakra knowledge, explaining how they can be used to interpret body language. Hands on hips, for example, could indicate sexual attraction, since the chakra that governs that energy is based in the lower abdomen.

Such insights help generate compassion for others, she said, and provide a great deal of amusement.

“Once you kind of know these little things and have these little tools, the world becomes a private joke between you and God,” she said. “Some of it just tickles you. But it’s beautiful just how everything connects.”

The iPhone X’s Face ID is years ahead of Android

iPhone X vs. Galaxy Note 8

The iPhone X brings to the iOS ecosystem a brand new trick that, in time, will probably find its way to other iOS and macOS devices. Face ID is the iPhone X’s signature feature, a facial recognition system that’s more sophisticated than anything available from the competition, and a lot more secure.

Some of the Android fans who have used facial recognition on Samsung phones like the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 will rightly say that Apple hasn’t invented the feature. They may even roll their eyes incredulously if you tell them Apple’s way is better and will probably be copied by their favorite Android device maker. Those people should really read this iPhone X review from an Android blog.

Ahead of iPhone X release, Apple gets hit with a lawsuit over the ‘Animoji’ name

iPhone X Features

Ahead of the upcoming iPhone X release, Apple has been hit with a lawsuit regarding one of the device’s more intriguing new features. According to a report from The Recorder, Enrique Bonansea is suing Apple for infringing upon his Animoji trademark. Animoji, if you recall, is the name Apple gave to the iPhone X’s animated emoji feature wherein the device’s TrueDepth camera system tracks a user’s facial expressions and applies them to an emoji in real-time.

The suit was filed earlier this week by Enrique Bonansea who claims to have registered the Animoji trademark with the USPTO in 2015. What’s more, Bonansea has had a messaging app in the App Store with the Animoji branding going all the way back to 2014. According to the suit, Apple’s decision to go ahead and use the Animoji name in spite of all this is a “textbook case of willful, deliberate trademark infringement.”

‘The Walking Dead’ Character Catch-Up Ahead of Season 8

We’ve already looked at where Season 7 of The Walking Dead left off here, focusing on both the key and most discussed characters from last season, and how they played into the season’s narrative. But what of the rest? Here’s our character catch-up to remind you where the other major players are and what we last saw them doing before Season 8 kicks off.

Michonne

Michonne saw out the season in a bad state in the infirmary at Alexandria. Thankfully, though, everybody’s favourite katana-wielding badass is alive to fight another day.

How’d she get in this predicament though? If you remember, she was involved in a fight with a turncoat Scavenger on her balcony post as Rick’s carefully laid plan went awry. As Michonne handed Farron a rifle after briefing her, the Scavenger turned the gun on Michonne, telling her: “We win.”

They fought, with Michonne seeming to come off worse, brutally beaten by her opponent. Farron pushed her towards the edge of the balcony.

Rick and Carl, seeing a body plummet, thought the worst — but on investigating they discovered Farron’s body, not Michonne. Finding a battered Michonne inside, they transferred her to the infirmary. Rick was seen holding her hand.

Carol

The Walking Dead-Carol-Morgan
Carol and Morgan have a deep understanding.

Carol spent much of the season in self-imposed exile from the group, holing up on the outskirts of Ezekiel’s camp. But in a tearful reunion with Daryl, she came to realise she needs them as much as they need her.

Carol’s season ended in the final episode when she joined Morgan and the Kingdom to fight the Saviors alongside Rick and co. And she arrived in timely fashion, pitching up just as it appeared that Negan had the upper hand. About to kill Carl, in jumped Shiva the tiger to maul one of Negan’s men, in turn frightening the bejeesus out of the barbed baseball-bat swinging bad guy.

Following the battle, Carol was seen at Sasha’s funeral, then sitting next to Morgan on the steps of a house. The pair looked at one another, seemingly putting any previous differences behind them.

Finally, she was present as Maggie, Rick and Ezekiel addressed the united communities.

Tara

The Walking Dead Tara
Natania holds a gun to Tara’s head, while Cyndie looks on.

Tara signed off from Season 7 after having discovered a new community – the Oceansiders – that proved crucial to Rick’s plans to attack the Saviors. Though leader Natania refused to allow her people to join the fight, she did give up their weapons so that Rick and his allies were fully tooled up. During the season, Tara also forged a relationship with Cyndie from the Oceanside community. It’s a friendship that may yet give more next season.

Tara was last seen in the season finale. We first saw her confronting Dwight, who had been locked in a cell in Alexandria. Dwight, of course, killed Tara’s girlfriend Denise. She urged Daryl to kill him, but he refrained because of Dwight’s protests that Denise wasn’t the intended target, and because he seemed ready to double-cross Negan.

The climactic shootout with the Saviors saw Rosita getting shot. Tara took on the responsibility of transferring her to the infirmary, where she was later seen sitting by her bedside. She was present at Sasha’s funeral and was last seen at the address to the communities by Rick, Ezekiel and Maggie.

Carl

Carl was targeted once again by Negan in the season finale. The charming brute threatened to kill him, and then Shiva showed up and threw a spanner in the works. This followed the savage season opener, in which Negan tried to make Rick chop his own son’s arm off. Carl must be getting pretty peeved by now.

Season 7 has in part been about developing Carl’s character, and in the final episode, he showed his mettle. He took the initiative and led the attack against the Saviors and Scavengers during the affray when zombie Sasha emerged from the coffin.

After seeing a body fall from the balcony at which Michonne was posted, he accompanied Rick, prepared for the worst, only to see the Scavenger’s body on the ground. They found Michonne inside, badly beaten.

Enid

The Walking Dead-Carl-Enid
Young love.

Enid spent much of Season 7 with Maggie at the Hilltop, after a touching journey there with Carl involving the two wearing roller skates. They shared a kiss then Carl took off to hunt down Negan.

She joined the fight at Alexandria against the Saviors and Scavengers as part of the Hilltop faction, and then joined the hunt for zombie Sasha after the fighting had dissipated. She then attended Sasha’s funeral.

Morgan

the-walking-dead-episode-713-morgan-james-gun-1200x707
Morgan is basically a badass.

Morgan has had an eventful season. In it, he has saved Carol and introduced her to Ezekiel and the Kingdom. Having come to the realisation that sometimes you have to kill, relinquishing his pacifist ideals, he also strangled Richard to death in Season 7.

After initially vowing to go after the Saviors alone, Morgan allowed Ezekiel to convince him to fight together in the season finale. He joined the fight alongside the Kingdom regiment at just the right moment, saving Carl’s life. During the battle, he used both a gun and his sharpened staff.

Before seeing him at the speech uniting the communities that closed the episode, he was seen sitting alone on the steps of a house. Carol joined him – both seemingly now at peace with each other.

Father Gabriel

Gabriel was intrinsic to Season 7, solidifying his relationship with Rick and proving himself a vital member of the group. He’s come a long way from the scaredy-cat priest who betrayed his flock. He’s now fighting with the best of them, and playing Negan to boot, leading their ruthless enemy to believe — quick as a flash — that Maggie is dead early on in the season. He also told Spencer he was a “tremendous s–t”, which was surely one of his finest moments.

After having been captured by the Scavengers, Gabriel was critical to negotiations with Jadis and her group. And after the betrayal, he joined the battle in Alexandria.

We last saw him running Sasha’s funeral service, and then listening to the speech uniting the communities.

Ezekiel

The Walking Dead-Ezekiel
We’ve learned a lot about Ezekiel, but is there more to come?

We’ve learned a lot about Ezekiel in a short space of time. He’s only been in the show for a season, but already he’s established himself as an important ally to Rick and the gang. He’s forged tight bonds with both Carol and Morgan, and we already know some of his background — he used to be a zookeeper. Hence his friendship with Shiva, a tiger he nursed back to health.

Ezekiel and Shiva were crucial in the fight against the Saviors and Scavengers at Alexandria in the season finale. They arrived, with Carol and Morgan and the rest of the Kingdom people, at just the right moment. As Negan readied himself to execute Carl, Shiva leapt in and took them all by surprise as she began mauling enemies. Ezekiel fought alongside Carol until their foes fled.

Finally, he delivered a speech to the communities united at Alexandria alongside Rick and Maggie.

Jadis

The-Walking-Dead-Jadis-Junkyard
Jadis betrays Rick’s trust in Season 7.

Jadis came into Season 7 of The Walking Dead an unlikeable character; a tough negotiator who threw Rick into a fight arena with a spiked walker. She left the season even more detestable.

Having struck a deal off-camera with Negan and the Saviors, the leader of the Scavengers earned Rick’s trust only to betray him.

She also revealed she has her sights set on Rick romantically – something that made Michonne bristle.

After turning her gun on Rick and shooting him in the season finale, she pushed Rick off the platform they were both standing on. She coldly delivered Rick to Negan, making him kneel down beside Carl who Negan was gearing up to kill. Negan reneged on his deal with Jadis here – offering her ten of his men instead of their agreed twelve. Could this be the first sign that Jadis might switch allegiance next season?

Last seen escaping amid the haze from the smoke bombs she and her people set off.

Sherry

Dwight’s wife Sherry made an intriguing departure mid-way through Season 7. After freeing Daryl from the Sanctuary, she too fled.

Negan ordered Dwight to go and find her but instead, he found a note from her containing her confession to setting Daryl free, an apology and their wedding rings.

The incident led to Dwight approaching Rick’s contingent, telling them he was sorry for everything. Now that Sherry is no longer in Negan’s clutches, Dwight has nothing keeping him tied to his side.

Sherry hasn’t been seen since Episode 11, and could well return in Season 8.

Rosita

the-walking-dead-episode-714-rosita-serratos-fence-1200x707
Rosita is in a bad way, but she’s recovering.

Season 7 saw Rosita team up with love rival Sasha to avenge Abraham’s death at the hands of Negan, and also to free Eugene. Their mission resulted in Sasha being captured.

She was also responsible for Eugene’s capture. She urged him to make the bullet she uses against Negan after he kills Spencer. Olivia lost her life because Rosita insisted it was she who made the bullet. After this, Eugene confessed and Negan took him, seeing his usefulness.

Rosita was shot during the finale showdown, and was last seen recovering in the infirmary with Tara at her side.

Gregory

THe Walking Dead-Gregory
Xander Berkeley as Gregory in The Walking Dead Season 7, Episode 8 | Photo: Gene Page/AMC

Gregory was last seen in the penultimate episode of Season 7. After considering killing Maggie when her back was turned, he attempted to kill a walker but chickened out. When a second walker came at him, Maggie saved him, telling a watching group of Hillside residents it was his first time. This wasn’t what Gregory had led them to believe.

The previous episode saw him telling Negan’s right-hand man Simon that he might need Negan’s help at some point to quell insurgents. Simon gave him a note that will gain him access to the Sanctuary if he needs it.

Following the Maggie incident, Gregory took Simon’s note from his top pocket, then called for Hilltop guard Kal, telling him to pack a bag and prepare to drive him somewhere. This will doubtless have repercussions in Season 8.

The Walking Dead Season 8 premieres in the US on October 22 and a day later in the UK.

Overcome Fear and Doubt and Go Ahead and Purchase That Franchise!

If you’re reading this article, it’s probably because you’re looking for that silver bullet that’s going to push you over the line and make you say “I’m ready!” to sign on the dotted line to purchase a franchise business, or start your own. I’m sorry to have to be the one to disappoint you, but that’s not what you’re going to find here. What I do hope that you find are key takeaways that empower and embolden you enough to gather your thoughts, weigh your options, and turn them into action.

The fear of failure can be paralyzing, especially when we have others counting on us. As humans, biologically our natural instincts are to fight or run. When we feel the fear of failure, we become anxious and nervous, which causes us to tighten up, freeze, then run. In today’s world, running means turning to meaningless and time-consuming activities—typically around some type of electronic device.

As a result, we distract ourselves and lose sight of the important issues that can change our lives for the better. Out of sight, out of mind—no worries. Of course that means finding solutions or finding change for the better is an impossible feat. Eventually, we find ourselves right back at that decision point, repeating the same behavior.

Here are the tips I provide to clients when they just can’t seem to get past the fear:

Visualize

Picture the worst result, then use your imagination to identify alternatives. Realizing that the worst case scenario can have alternatives is powerful medicine, which will relieve the pressure and make action possible. Bringing fearful situations to light allows you to deal with them in a more rational way.

Identify Role Models

Take the time to read about and talk to successful business owners that you know or have heard about— not just in the category of business you’re considering. These successful people were clearly able to overcome their fear of failure and move forward. Find out how they did it, and emulate their practices.

The 80 Percent Rule

I had the pleasure of hearing Brad Sugars, world renowned speaker, restaurateur, and founder/president of the ActionCOACH franchise, speak and he shared this rule I like to pass on. When you are 80% sure, make a decision! If you don’t, you’re simply looking for a reason to say no. It is rare that you’ll ever be 100% about anything. Don’t use that as an excuse. If you keep things the same, don’t expect anything to change.

Don’t Take It Personal

Not everything works out the way we want or hope—including business. Just because a business fails, doesn’t mean that we are failures. Suzy Kassem said it best in Rise Up and Salute the Sun (2010), “doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” If the business fails, pick yourself back up and try again. The decision will be much easier the second time around—I promise.

If you are particularly fearful of the idea of business ownership and are looking for a more measured way to enter into a new investment in yourself, your community, and business, I highly recommend considering franchising. While no business or business model is guaranteed, franchising can drastically cut into some of the risks typically associated with a concept business or startup.

Training and Support

With most franchises, previous industry experience is not a requirement. A good franchise will train you on running your business from start to finish.

Critical Startup Assistance

The startup phase is always the most challenging for any business.

Pre-Negotiated Vendor Contracts

Franchisors have great leverage over their suppliers and can typically negotiate better than average rates, terms, and levels of service.

Location! Location! Location!

Franchises are usually preferred in most retail locations.

Ongoing Support

Franchisors are behind the scenes constantly looking for ways to make their franchisees more competitive and successful.

I hope that you found this information helpful, enlightening, and motivating enough for you to make a decision. But just in case, here’s one last takeaway. If you haven’t read the book The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas H. Stanley, Ph.D., I encourage you to do so. Two-thirds of millionaires in the U.S. are business owners—that’s no coincidence. So what are you waiting for?!!

Bachelor in Paradise’s Jade and Tanner Tolbert Head to Hawaii for Tropical ‘Babymoon’ Ahead of Daughter’s Arrival

Jade (Roper) Tolbert and Tanner Tolbert are celebrating the upcoming arrival of their little one with a trip to paradise!

On Wednesday, Jade took to Instagram to share that she and her hubby will be heading to the tropical island of Maui on Thursday.

“The hubs already posted this today, but it’s a pretty darn cute pic, so I’m reposting anyway,” Jade posted on Instagram. “This wasn’t during our babymoon like some were asking… we actually leave tomorrow for Maui for our “babymoon” vacation! I’m so excited, I’ve never been to Hawaii! Any recommendations of things to do or places to see that are preggo mama friendly?  #matchingoutfits #babymoon.”

The Bachelor in Paradise duo, who tied the knot in a televised ceremony that aired on Valentine’s Day last year, revealed that they had been talking about starting a family from the get go.

“Two days after my missed period, I took the test,” Jade previously told PEOPLE. “I just knew it. Tanner wanted to be there. He was like, ‘Don’t take it without me.’ One morning we woke up and I took the test and we watched it on the counter and it turned from not pregnant to pregnant. I knew it, but it was like, ‘Holy cow, it’s happening.’ ”

The couple announced their pregnancy in March with a series of adorable photos.

“We’re crazy grateful to finally announce a little secret we’ve been keeping,” Jade revealed via Twitter. “We’re absolutely head over heels in love already!”

In May, the couple announced exclusively with PEOPLE that they will be expecting a baby girl in September.

“I’m hoping for a boy,” Tanner, 30, said before finding out the sex. “Not that I don’t want a girl, I actually want one of each. It’s just, I’m going to make her keep trying until we have a boy, so I’d like to get it out of the way sooner.”

“He thinks I’m going to have four children if the first three are girls, but I think he’s wrong on that,” added Jade.

JFK’s Grandchildren Reflect on His Legacy Ahead of What Would Have Been His 100th Birthday

If he was still alive, John F. Kennedy would turn 100 years old on May 29 — and although his grandchildren never met the former president, who was assassinated in 1963 at age 46, his ideals continue to impact the nation and their own lives.

In a video made in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Library in honor of the centennial, the president’s daughter Caroline Kennedy and her three children — Rose, 28, Tatiana, 27, and Jack, 24 —remember President Kennedy’s legacy.

“I’ve thought about him and missed him every day of my life, but growing up without him was made easier thanks to all of the people who kept him in their heart,” said Caroline, the 59-year-old former president’s only living child.

She reminisced about hiding under the Oval Office desk and sailing with her father as a child.

“He is a historical figure,” Caroline said. “One hundred years is a really long time, but I think his legacy and these values are timeless and they live on.”

Tatiana, a climate change reporter for the New York Times, shared that she connects with her grandfather by studying history, a pastime also enjoyed by President Kennedy.

“While my grandfather had reverence for the past and the lessons it could impart, he also knew that America was a country where change was possible, where we aren’t bound solely by tradition, if we understand the past with which we are breaking,” she said.

Rose, a spitting image of her grandmother Jackie Kennedy, spoke about her grandfather’s push for equality — work that continues today in injustices such as voting rights and mass incarceration.

“My grandfather would be proud of how far we’ve come as a nation since 1963, but he’d have been the first to tell us that we have a long way to go,” she said.

Jack talked about President Kennedy’s concern for the environment and the ongoing issue of climate change.

“He cared deeply about the environment, about science and technology,” Jack said. “And he recognized that only if America leads the world in solving global problem can we make sure that it’s done right.”

“Great challenges are opportunities,” he continued. “I know that we’re up to the task, but we have to demand action from our leaders, and we have to vote.”

The Kardashians Canceled Their Christmas Card, But Went Full Speed Ahead With The Festivities

If you’ve been patiently waiting for the annual Kardashian Christmas card, it’s just not happening this year. Christmas has officially come and gone without the first family of reality TV releasing a traditional holiday photo.

Of course, since Kim Kardashian is still adjusting after she was robbed in Paris this past October, and Kanye West was only recently released from hospital ― not to mention all the drama between Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna ― we can’t say we’re surprised the family skipped what was really just another excuse for yet another elaborate photoshoot.

Still, this isn’t the first year, the family has skipped the sending out the card. Following their most over-the-top Christmas card ever, shot by David LaChapelle in 2013, Kim told Glamour UK that they “ran out of time” in 2014.

So while a card isn’t in the cards this year, that doesn’t mean the Kardashians didn’t keep up with their other holiday traditions.

On Saturday night, the family gathered together for matriarch Kris Jenner’s annual Christmas Eve party, where guests wore their sparkliest attire and were treated to performances by John Legend and Babyface, according to The Daily Mail.

Though Kim has yet to make a real return to social media herself, she was spotted enjoying herself in her sisters’ Khloe and Kylie’s Snapchat stories.

It’s OK To Be Fat. Go Ahead. You’re Allowed.

I know the fat shamers on the anti-fat Reddit threads and the “concern trolls” all over the world will disagree heartily, but I am allowed to take up as much space as I want to take up. And, you know what else? I do not OWE IT TO ANYONE to be fat and healthy, either.

Contrary to popular opinion, I can be fat and healthy if I want to be. I can also be fat and unhealthy. Fat people have existed as long as humans have existed, so get used to us. We’re not going to go and hide just because a bunch of people who have a lot of time to waste on a computer are creating hate sights dedicated to making fun of our fat body. I’ve been fat for over 30 years. My fat skin is extra thick and used to your vile and mean comments. They roll right off my back. (And right over my fat ass, too.) And, the mean threads that are started by the fat haters actually fuel my fire and serve as a reminder as to how much there is still to do in the Body Acceptance movement.

To me, it’s plain and simple: You get to exist any way you want to exist. As Pink so eloquently put it recently when being attacked about her body: “I’m not worried about me. And I’m not worried about you, either. I am perfectly fine, perfectly happy, and my healthy, voluptuous and crazy strong body is having some much deserved time off.”

Pink is saying what a lot of us “fatties” in the Body Acceptance movement repeat over and over. “My body, my business. Your body, your business.” I have had my run-ins with people (total strangers) trying to police my body and the customers of my lingerie boutique. I even was on CNN talking about the right to be fat and wear lingerie. My boutique and I got embroiled in a fierce media debate about whether or not my plus size lingerie boutique glorifies obesity.

I think it’s happiness that really infuriates and confuses some fat haters. People are often baffled when they see happy fat people. And when you add in the idea that we are not addicted to dieting or working out or obsessed with the notion that we should become some thin version of ourselves, well, that really throws the shamers and haters for a loop. I literally had to defend, on national TV, our right to exist as fat women who want to wear sexy and very revealing lingerie. All bodies are good bodies. All bodies deserve to be celebrated. No one body is better than another body.

So, yes, you can EXIST and take up more space than your neighbor. You do not have to quality that existence with a “but, I am fat and healthy.” You don’t have to justify anything to anyone about your body and what it looks like on the outside or the inside. The people who want to police your body are just sad, unhappy people with way too much time on their hands. They have nothing better to do. Me, on the other hand, I have shit to do. And, the first item on my TO-DO list is to help fat, thick, curvy women to find some sexy lingerie and help them celebrate their fat, luscious bodies.
