Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer Suspended for Three Games for Mishandling Abuse Allegations

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio State on Wednesday night suspended head football coach Urban Meyer three games for mishandling domestic violence accusations, punishing one of the sport’s most prominent leaders for keeping an assistant on staff for several years after the coach’s wife accused him of abuse.

The move followed a two-week investigation into how Meyer reacted to accusations that former Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith abused his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. Zach Smith was fired last month after she asked a judge for a protective order.

Courtney Smith alleged her husband shoved her against a wall and put his hands around her neck in 2015. The university put Meyer on paid leave and began an investigation after Courtney Smith spoke out publicly, sharing text messages and photos she traded in 2015 with Meyer’s wife, Shelley Meyer. Shelley Meyer is a registered nurse and instructor at Ohio State.

Trustees discussed the decision to punish Meyer in a marathon meeting Wednesday while Meyer awaited the decision.

The investigation prompted a tweet from Meyer in which he insisted he followed proper protocols after learning of the 2015 accusations. But he also acknowledged lying to reporters a week earlier when he said he hadn’t heard of the incident until shortly before he fired Zach Smith.

The probe directly centered on the question of what Meyer knew and when. Meyer said in his tweet that he always elevated issues through the proper channels, and did so with the Smith situation in 2015. That contradicted what he told reporters at Big Ten media day a week earlier: “I was never told about anything and nothing ever came to light. I’ve never had a conversation about it. I know nothing about it.”

Speaking after the investigation was announced, Zach Smith said he spoke with Meyer at the time and athletic director Gene Smith also knew about the allegations.

Zach Smith said Meyer told him he would be fired if the head coach found out Smith had hit his wife.

Zach Smith — the grandson of late Ohio State coach and Meyer mentor Earle Bruce — has never been criminally charged or convicted of abuse. He has a charge of criminal trespass pending, and the Smiths are due in court next month for a hearing on a restraining order Courtney Smith was granted July 20.

Meyer was heading into his seventh season at Ohio State, where he is 73-8 with a national title in 2014 and two Big Ten Conference championships. Ohio State’s Title IX sexual misconduct policy includes reporting allegations of domestic violence made against university employees.

Violating that policy allows Meyer to be fired with cause, according to provisions placed in his contract when it was extended in April by two years. The deal through 2022, increasing Meyer’s salary to $ 7.6 million in 2018, with annual 6 percent raises. Meyer had about $ 38 million left on his contract.

Ohio State’s season starts Sept. 1 with a game against Oregon State in Columbus.

In 2009, Zach Smith was accused of aggravated battery on his pregnant wife while he was working a graduate assistant for Meyer at Florida. The charge was dropped because of insufficient evidence.

The Smiths separated in June 2015 and divorced in 2016.

Meyer is one of the most accomplished coaches in college football history, with three national championships and a 177-31 record in 16 seasons at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State, the team he grew up rooting for in Northeast Ohio.

Meyer won national championships with Florida in 2006 and ’08, but his teams also had more than two dozen players get into trouble with the law. He resigned twice at Florida, citing health reasons, first in the 2009 season after the Gators lost the Southeastern Conference championship game while trying to repeat as national champs. He changed his mind soon after and coached another season. The Gators went 8-5 in 2010, and afterward, Meyer stepped down for good.

Meyer was out of coaching for a season but was hired by Ohio State in November 2011. The Buckeyes had fired Jim Tressel, another national championship-winning coach, before that season for lying to the NCAA and university about rules violation committed by some of his players.

Since returning to coaching, Meyer’s program has been one of the most dominant in college football, and his players have mostly stayed out of major trouble.

Meyer faced some criticism in 2013 for allowing running back Carlos Hyde to return to the team after he was charged with striking a woman in a bar. The case was dropped by police when the woman chose not to pursue charges, but Hyde was suspended three games.

The Meyer investigation cost $ 500,000 and was conducted by the national law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.

Ohio State began investigating Meyer while also facing three federal lawsuits about its response to allegations of groping, leering and other misconduct by a deceased athletic department doctor who treated wrestlers and other students for two decades. The lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss say Ohio State facilitated the abuse by ignoring complaints.

Since Ohio State announced an independent investigation in April, more than 100 former students have come forward with accounts of sexual misconduct by Strauss. The allegations range from 1979 to 1997 and involve male athletes from 14 sports, as well as his work at the student health center and his off-campus medical office.

4 Things to Know About Sexual Assault Allegations Against CBS’ Leslie Moonves

A New Yorker report on allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and retaliation against CBS CEO Leslie “Les” Moonves was so anticipated that it sent the media company’s stock down almost 10% hours before the story’s publication on Friday afternoon. CBS also said it would investigate the allegations before the story appeared.

And then it did. The New Yorker‘s Ronan Farrow provided accounts from several women, both identified by name and presented anonymously or with partial identification, who accused Moonves of unwanted physical contact that ranged from forcibly holding them down, putting a hand up a skirt, or thrusting his tongue down their throat.

In a statement to the New Yorker, Moonves said acknowledged making advances in some cases “decades ago,” but said he understood “‘no’ means ‘no’” and never retaliated. CBS said the company has never received any claims of misconduct against the CEO during his 24 years at the company, and has paid out no settlements. Still, earlier Friday, CBS released a statement that its independent directors were committed to investigating claims of personal misconduct. Multiple past and present CBS executives are mentioned in the article.

Five key takeaways from the lengthy New Yorker story:

1.) Moonves is alleged to have arranged solo meetings at which he made advances or assaults, a pattern similar to that reported of Hollywood mega-producer Harvey Weinstein. Writer and actress Illeana Douglas, writer Janet Jones, producer Christine Peters, and an actress who appeared on a CBS show as a police officer and declined to be identified further said Moonves made unwanted contact or advances during such meetings. Dinah Kirgo, a writer, said she turned down a private dinner with Moonves. (CBS told Farrow that Moonves acknowledged trying to kiss Douglas, but denied any more aggressive behavior, and that he didn’t touch or make inappropriate contact with the police-officer actress or Peters. CBS said he didn’t recall interacting with Jones or Kirgo.)

2.) Following Moonves’ alleged assault, Douglas had her role cut from a show in production and an exclusive appearance deal canceled with 80% of the payment not made. Douglas’s attorney negotiated for part of the payment and a contact to appear in a new miniseries. CBS denied the payment or new contract were settlements. Other women in the New Yorker article described retaliation after their alleged negative interactions with Moonves, including the loss of career opportunities and the spread of rumors that they were difficult to deal with.

3.) Farrow described an environment at CBS that allowed a culture of sexual misconduct and harassment to fester, citing numerous incidents, including those recited in a lawsuit in 2027 by a longtime CBS employee, Erin Gee, who said she was demoted after a boss told her “to have sex with a coworker with whom she was having difficulties in order to ‘break the ice.’” (Her attorney declined to comment and CBS said the matter was settled.)

4.) A Washington Post article early this year providing extensive reporting on the allegations about Charlie Rose’s purported sexual misconduct omitted mention of Jeff Faber, the executive producer of 60 Minutes, about whom Farrow details a number of anecdotes about his unwanted physical contact with employees and how he allegedly protected and promoted other men accused of a variety of behavior. Fager allegedly pressured the Post. The Post declined to comment on the specifics, stating: “Nothing that met our longstanding standards for publication was left out.” (Post contributing writer Irin Carmon, one of the two authors of the story, said while accepting an award at an event in June and at which Fager was in the audience: “The system is still powerful men getting stories killed that I believe will someday see the light of day.” She added on Twitter: “There will be more to say, and I will when I can.”)

R Kelly Addresses Sexual Misconduct Allegations On New 19-Minute Track ‘I Admit It’ (Listen)

R Kelly is apparently looking to cash in on his sexual misconduct allegations with a new 19-minute song that addresses the accusations made against him by multiple young women.

Taking to Instagram Live Sunday night, the crooner teased I Admit It, a trap-flavored, auto-tuned response in which he sings, “I done made some mistakes,” but goes on to deny allegations of sexual misconduct. “How they gon’ say I don’t respect these women, when all I’ve done is represent (30 years)/ Take my career and turn it upside down, ’cause you mad I’ve got some girlfriends (girlfriends),” he sings.

Kelly admits to being with “older and younger [ladies]” and also references the ongoing #MuteRKelly campaign.

“I admit I f**k with all the ladies, that’s both older and young ladies (ladies, yeah)/ But tell me how they call it pedophile because that s**t is crazy (crazy)/ You may have your opinions, entitled to your opinions (opinions)/ But really am I supposed to go to jail or lose my career because of your opinion/ Yeah, go ahead and stone me, point your finger at me (stone me, yeah, yeah)/ Turn the world against me, but only god can mute me (against me, mute me)”

He gets specific about allegations charged by the parents of Jocelyn Savage, who say Kelly began dating their 19-year-old daughter in 2016 and proceeded to cut off her communication with them. The parents accuse Kelly of brainwashing, grooming, and imprisoning their daughter and multiple other women at his homes in both Chicago and Georgia. For her part, Savage said she was “totally fine [and] happy where I’m at.”

“Said I’m abusing these women, what the f**k that’s some absurd s**t (what?)/ They’re brainwashed, really? (really)/ Kidnapped, really? (really)/ Can’t eat, really? (really)/ Real talk, that s**t sound silly (yeah)/ And if you really, really wanna know (know)/ Her father dropped her off at my show (show)/ And told this boy to put her on stage (yeah)/ I admit that she was over age (age)/ I admit that I was feelin’ her and I admit that she was feelin’ me (she was feelin’ me)/ I admit that that’s the s**t that comes with/ being a celebrity (celebrity)/ I ain’t chasing these ladies, no (no, no)/ These ladies are chasing me, yeah (chasing me).”

“Now I’m only saying all this s**t, ’cause how they tryna play me, yeah (yeah, oh)/ I admit that this is no disrespect to the parents (no disrespect)/ But this is my advice to you ’cause I’m also a parent (parent)/ Don’t push your daughter in my face, and tell me that it’s okay (my face, okay)/ ‘Cause your agenda is to get paid, and get mad when it don’t go your way (yeah, go way)

Kelly continues: “What’s the definition of a cult?/ Whats the definition of a sex slave?/ Go to the dictionary, look it up/ Let me know I’ll be here waiting/ Now I admit that I got some girls that love me to pull they hair (they hair)/ Now I admit that they love me to talk dirty when I pull they hair (they hair)/ Some like me to spank ’em/ Some like to get branded/ And what some of these girls want, is too much for the radio station/ Look I’m just a man y’all (man y’all)/ Not a monster or beast (no, no)/ But I admit there are times when these girls so fine, they’ll chill with a n**ga for a week (oh, for a week).”

At another point in the song, Kelly acknowledges that he himself was the victim of sexual abuse at the age of 14, singing: “Now, I admit a family member touched me (touched me, touched me, touched me)/ From a child to the age 14, yeah/ While I laid asleep, took my virginity (sleep, gini’)”

Kelly also directly addresses Jim DeRogatis, the Chicago-based music journalist who has reported on Kelly’s alleged misconduct over the last two decades:

“To Jim DeRogatis, whatever your name is (whatever your name is)/ You been tryna destroy me for 25 whole years (25 whole years, yeah)/ Writin’ the same stories over and over against (stories, stories, yeah)/ Off my name, you done went and made yourself a career (a whole career)/ But guess what? I pray for you and family, and all my other enemies (prayed for you, enemies)/ I’m not gonna let y’all steal my joy, I’m just gon’ keep on doing me (my joy, doing me).”

Listen to Kelly’s song below, followed by a transcript of the lyrics:

‘My Life Is at Risk of Being Undermined.’ Morgan Freeman Pushes Back Against Misconduct Allegations

Actor Morgan Freeman is maintaining that his behavior should not be classified as sexual assault, in the wake of harassment and misconduct allegations leveled against him earlier this week.

“I am devastated that 80 years of my life is at risk of being undermined, in the blink of an eye, by Thursday’s media reports,” Freeman said in a statement provided to TIME late Friday night. “All victims of assault and harassment deserve to be heard. And we need to listen to them. But it is not right to equate horrific incidents of sexual assault with misplaced compliments or humor.”

A CNN report published Thursday included accounts from eight people who accused Freeman of inappropriate behavior or harassment. Many of these alleged instances included what were perceived as inappropriate comments from Freeman. One woman claimed he once repeatedly tried to lift her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear; another said the actor made so many comments about her appearance that she and her assistants stopped wearing fitted clothing around him. CNN reporter Chloe Melas also said the actor called her “ripe” when she interviewed him while six months pregnant.

Freeman, who issued an apology shortly after CNN’s story broke Thursday, said in the second statement that he uses jokes and humor to make people “feel appreciated and at ease around me,” though he added that, “Clearly I was not always coming across the way I intended.”

Still, Freeman maintains in the statement that his behavior never crossed certain lines.

“I did not create unsafe work environments. I did not assault women. I did not offer employment or advancement in exchange for sex,” Freeman said in the statement. “Any suggestion that I did so is completely false.”

Hollywood filmmaker Woody Allen faced sexual assault allegations by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow in 1992, when she was just seven-years-old, with the allegations recently resurfacing during the #MeToo movement.

Woody Allen repeated his denial earlier this year, but due to the current #MeToo movement and the shift against victim blaming, increasing numbers of A-listers have been voicing their support for Farrow.

‘If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film,’ explained Greta Gerwig. ‘I have not worked for him again, and I will not work for him again. Dylan Farrow… made me realize that I increased another woman’s pain, and I was heartbroken by that realization.’

Natalie Portman agreed, stating ‘I believe Dylan. I would want to say that: “I believe you, Dylan”‘, with increasing numbers of actors and actresses choosing to not work with the director in the future.

Cate Blanchett starred in Woody Allen’s 2013 film, Blue Jasmine, earning her a best bctress oscar, and as a supporter of the #MeToo movement, fans were interested in what she had to say about the director.

This week, the topic came up as Cate was posed a difficult question by CNN journalist Christine Amanpour:

‘How do you juxtapose being a #MeToo proponent, a Times Up proponent, and staying silent, or having worked with Woody Allen, would you work with him again?’

‘I don’t think I’ve stayed silent at all,’ Cate was quick to respond. ‘At the time that I worked with Woody Allen I knew nothing of the allegations and it came out at the time that the film was released.’

She continued: ‘At the time I said, you know, it’s a very painful and complicated situation for the family, which I hope they have the ability to resolve, and if these allegations need to be reexamined – in my understanding they’ve been through court – then I’m a big believer in the justice system and setting legal precedence.’

‘If the case needs to be reopened then I am absolutely whole-heartedly in support of that, because I think that there’s one thing about social media is fantastic about raising awareness about issues, but it’s not the judge and jury, and so I feel that these things need to go into court, so that if these abuses have happened that the person is prosecuted, so that someone who’s not in the shiny industry that I can can use that precedent to protect themselves.’

Ryan Seacrest will still be hosting E!’s Oscars red carpet amid sexual abuse allegations

But how will it go down on the night?

Ryan Seacrest

US TV presenter Ryan Seacrest is a staple of award show season, hosting the E! network’s coverage and interviewing A-list celebrities on the red carpet.

While the Oscars 2018 is one of Ryan’s busiest gigs, with his red carpet interviews being a regular Academy Awards fixture, there was talk that they might be axed this year, after sexual abuse allegations against the 43-year-old emerged.

It was announced this week however that Ryan would stay at the helm of the show as scheduled, after a ‘comprehensive and thorough’ investigation.

Kicking off #eredcarpet with a @thechainsmokers collab. You watching? #grammys

A post shared by Ryan Seacrest (@ryanseacrest) on

The allegations in question came from a former E! News wardrobe stylist who reported to Variety that Seacrest had behaved sexually aggressively towards her for years, something that Seacrest has denied.

‘Much has been said about the #MeToo and Times Up movement(s) and the importance of providing women and men with the opportunity to share their stories of workplace misconduct, in an effort to change our culture and the systemic inequalities that exist,’ Ryan announced in a previous statement. ‘I absolutely support this cause unequivocally and applaud all the brave souls who have come forward to share their stories.’

Legends. #eredcarpet #grammys

A post shared by Ryan Seacrest (@ryanseacrest) on

He continued: ‘Sadly, last fall I became one of the accused, which I promptly revealed proactively to the network involved and to the public. And to be equally clear, those accusations were then investigated by an independent third-party over the course of a two-month process and involved dozens of interviews that included me, the accused and countless others. Ultimately, my name was cleared. I eagerly participated in the investigation in order to demonstrate my innocence because I know my truth, and I believe in due process.’

E!’s investigation was extremely comprehensive and thorough,’ the network announced in a recent statement. ‘Over the course of a two-month process, our outside counsel interviewed more than two dozen people regarding the allegations, including multiple separate meetings with the claimant and all firsthand witnesses that she provided. The investigator is an attorney with nearly 20 years experience and is highly regarded professionally. Any claims that question the legitimacy of this investigation are completely baseless.’

Confirming Ryan Seacrest’s return to his 2018 Oscars hosting duties, the network confirmed to The Cut on the same day that the red carpet pre-show would go ahead as planned on Sunday.

‘I don’t want to accuse anyone of not telling the truth,’ Ryan announced, addressing the accusations, according to The Wrap. ‘But in this case, I have no choice but to again deny the claims against me, remind people that I was recused of any wrongdoing, and put the matter to rest.’

Jeffrey Tambor Has Been Fired From Transparent Over Allegations of Sexual Harassment

UPDATE: Tambor issued a statement to EW in which he says he is “profoundly disappointed in Amazon’s handling of these false accusations” against him. He continued: “I am even more disappointed in Jill Soloway’s unfair characterization of me as someone who would ever cause harm to any of my fellow cast mates. In our four-year history of working together on this incredible show, these accusations have NEVER been revealed or discussed directly with me or anyone at Amazon. Therefore, I can only surmise that the investigation against me was deeply flawed and biased toward the toxic politicized atmosphere that afflicted our set. As I have consistently stated, I deeply regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone and I will continue to vehemently defend myself. I also deeply regret that this ground-breaking show, which changed so many lives, is now in jeopardy. That, to me, is the biggest heartbreak.”

EARLIER: More than three months after opening an investigation into sexual harassment claims against Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor, Amazon has officially fired the 73-year-old actor, EW has confirmed.

Tambor, who has won two Best Actor Emmy awards and a Golden Globe for his performance on the series as a transgender woman who comes out late in life, has been accused of harassment by Transparent guest star Trace Lysette as well as a former assistant.

“I have great respect and admiration for Van Barnes and Trace Lysette, whose courage in speaking out about their experience on Transparent is an example of the leadership this moment in our culture requires,” creator Jill Soloway said Thursday in a statement provided to EW. “We are grateful to the many trans people who have supported our vision for Transparent since its inception and remain heartbroken about the pain and mistrust their experience has generated in our community. We are taking definitive action to ensure our workplace respects the safety and dignity of every individual, and are taking steps to heal as a family.”

In a previous statement, Tambor said, “I know I haven’t always been the easiest person to work with. I can be volatile and ill-tempered, and too often I express my opinions harshly and without tact. But I have never been a predator — ever.”

A few weeks after the accusations were made public and the investigation was underway, Tambor appeared to remove himself from the series. “Playing Maura Pfefferman on Transparent has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life,” he said in the statement. “What has become clear over the past weeks, however, is that this is no longer the job I signed up for four years ago. I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue. Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to Transparent.

Despite his assertion, a representative for Tambor later said “no final decision” had yet been made. The future of one of Amazon’s flagship shows had also been uncertain, but star Judith Light and producer-distributor Amazon recently confirmed that season 5 ofTransparent is in the works.

Deadline first reported the news of Tambor’s departure.

Minnie Driver just quit her role as Global Ambassador of Oxfam over sex abuse allegations

‘I am nothing short of horrified’

Minnie Driver

Actress Minnie Driver has just made headlines, publicly stepping down from her role as a global celebrity ambassador for Oxfam in the wake of the charity’s recent sex scandal.

Allegations were publicly made against the charity this week, claiming that Oxfam aid workers in developing countries, including Chad and Haiti, had hired sex workers. And despite working with the charity for over 20 years, the 48-year-old actress had no hesitation announcing that she was ‘nothing short of horrified’ by the recent allegations, citing them as the reason for her exit.

‘I am nothing short of horrified by the allegations against Oxfam International,’ Minnie announced in a statement. ‘In no uncertain terms do I plan to continue my support of this organization or its leaders. And though it is unfortunate that after 20 years I am no longer able to advocate and defend through this specific framework, social and economic injustice is more globally prevalent than ever.’

She continued: ‘I certainly will not let the abhorrent mistakes of a troubling organization stop me or anyone else from working with good people in this space to support a population of human beings around the world that needs our help.’

Oxfam has since responded to Minnie’s statement, thanking her for her commitment over the years and pledging that it is ‘more committed now than ever to learn from our mistakes’.

Was James Franco’s Oscar Snub Due to His Sexual-Misconduct Allegations?

Steve Granitz/Getty

Less than two weeks ago, the Los Angeles Times published an investigation in which five women accused James Franco of “inappropriate or sexually exploitative behavior,” leading many to believe that the prolific actor would be the next powerful Hollywood player in the #MeToo movement whose career would fall in atonement for his actions.

Was Franco’s Oscar snub this morning the first punishment?

The Times investigation coincided with the prime of Franco’s campaign for what had seemed to be a sure-thing Best Actor nomination for The Disaster Artist, in which he stars as Tommy Wiseau, the notorious director and star of The Room, widely believed to be the worst film ever made. (In a meta twist, Franco also directs the film.)

James Franco Attends 2018 SAG Awards Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations

James Franco SAGs 2018
James Franco (bottom right) attends the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at The Shrine Auditorium on January 21, 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

James Franco didn’t let recent headlines stop him from appearing at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, January 21. The star is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his role inThe Disaster Artist.

Franco, 39, did attend the January 7 Golden Globes where he won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his role in The Disaster Artist. He did not appear at the Critics Choice Awards on January 11, where he also won for his portrayal of director and actor Tommy Wiseau.

During the Globes, multiple women took to Twitter to accuse Franco of sexual misconduct. Franco wore a Time’s Up pin to support the #MeToo movement, which angered actress Ally Sheedy, who was directed by Franco in the off-Broadway production of The Long Shrift in 2014. “Why is a man hosting? Why is James Franco allowed in? Said too much. Nite love ya #goldenglobes,” she wrote. “Ok wait. Bye. Christian Slater and James Franco at a table on @goldenglobes #MeToo. James Franco just won. Please never ever ask me why I left the film/tv business.” She later deleted her tweets.

Three days after the Globes, Franco appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and denied the claims. “First of all, I have no idea what I did to Ally Sheedy, I directed her in a play Off-Broadway. I had nothing but a great time with her, total respect for her. I have no idea why she was upset,” Franco told Colbert. “She took the tweet down. I don’t know. I can’t speak for her, I don’t know.”

He also mentioned “the others” that accused him. “I pride myself on taking responsibility for things that I’ve done. I have to do that to maintain my well-being. I do it whenever I know that there is something wrong or needs to be changed, I make it a point to do it,” he continued.

“The things that I heard that were on Twitter are not accurate, but I completely support people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn’t have a voice for so long. So I don’t want to, you know, shut them down in any way. It’s, I think, a good thing and I support it.”

The morning after his Colbert interview aired, five more women came forward, accusing the actor of inappropriate behavior in an expose published by the Los Angeles Times. One woman claimed that Franco had pressured her into performing oral sex on him while in a car. “I was talking to him, all of a sudden his penis was out,” Violet Paley, 23, alleged. “I got really nervous, and I said, ‘Can we do this later?’ He was kind of nudging my head down, and I just didn’t want him to hate me, so I did it.”

The actor’s attorney Michael Plonsker denied all allegations and referred to Franco’s Colbert interview.

Michael Douglas Denies Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Michael Douglas denied sexual harassment allegations in an interview with Deadline on Tuesday, January 9.

The Oscar winner, 73, chose to come forward preemptively after being contacted by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety regarding claims of sexual misconduct made by an employee who worked for him more than 30 years ago.

According to Douglas, the publications reached out for comment regarding the woman’s claims that he used colorful and suggestive language in front of her, masturbated in front of her and blackballed her from the industry after he fired her.

“This is a complete lie, fabrication, no truth to it whatsoever,” he told Deadline of the allegation of sexual misconduct, saying that his “head was reeling.”

As for the other claims, Douglas apologized for his language but insisted that “none of it was directed at her.”

“She may have overheard private conversations, and if she was offended, she could have excused herself. As far as blackballing her, that was completely untrue. She was a lady who was involved in development at my company, and we just didn’t have a good development record in the time she was there, so I just moved on,” he said. “If people from the industry called me to ask about her, I would have been honest, but I never blackballed her.”

Douglas calls the accusations “extremely painful” but added, “I’d confess to anything I thought I was responsible for.”

He said what hurt the most was “having to share something like this to your wife and your children,” adding, “My kids are really upset, has to go to school worrying this is going to be in some article about me, being a sexual harasser. They’re scared and very uncomfortable.”

Douglas said his wife of 17 years, Catherine Zeta-Jones, with whom he shares two children, Dylan, 17, and Carys, 14, has been “very supportive” amid the situation that he described as “a complete nightmare.”

“I’m going to continue the way I’ve always treated women, as equals and my peers. Working closely with them. I would hope that as a cautionary tale, we will be careful about accusing, and being accused,” he continued.

Referencing the #MeToo movement and current climate in Hollywood in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal and several other sexual misconduct allegations made against high-profile actors including Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K. and Jeffrey Tambor, Douglas added, “I hope this movement continues to grow, but that there is care shown in who is accused and how the accusation is handled.”

‘NCIS New Orleans’ Showrunner Hit With Racial And Sexual Allegations

Allegations of sexual harassment and a side of racial insensitivity have surfaced against “NCIS: New Orleans” executive producer Brad Kern, according to two separate HR investigations launched into his behavior, reports Variety. Kern took over as showrunner in January 2016, in the midst of its second season.

Within a year, he was the target of HR inquiries centered on allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination against women — particularly working mothers — and racially charged comments, among other issues.According to multiple sources, he would often speak in an offensive voice meant to imitate African-American vernacular speech.

Via Variety:

In the writers room, he would sometimes employ a stereotyped rendition of African-American speech patterns as he tried out dialogue meant for characters played by Darryl “Chill” Mitchell and C.C.H. Pounder, African-American members of the drama’s cast. “It was offensive,” says a former employee.

One “NCIS: NOLA” writer had penned a script in which two guest characters — a couple — were supposed to be African-American. It emerged that the woman was likely to be played by a white woman. On a conference call, Kern said it would not make sense to cast a Black man as a romantic interest for a character played by a white woman, according to one person who was on the call and one person who was told about the comment afterward.

As for Kern’s sexual harassment allegations, the producer is accused of making sexualized remarks about women, giving massages without asking, and mocking a nursing mother in front of her colleagues.

Several sources said that at many different times, he spoke approvingly of casting a well-known actress in a role on the show because an important CBS executive “wanted to f—k her.” Kern allegedly engineered the exit of Zoe McLellan, an original cast member who did not return for the third season, because, in his view, men didn’t find her “f—kable,” multiple sources tell Variety. (McLellan did not reply to Variety’s requests for comment.)

While the investigations found Kern had indeed made “insensitive” and “offensive” comments, CBS concluded that there was no evidence of retaliation, harassment, discrimination or gender bias but told staffers that “appropriate” action had been taken, including sensitivity training for the producer. Variety spoke to seven people who have worked for the series who report that his inappropriate behavior has continued, despite the investigations.

“We were aware of these allegations when they took place in 2016, and took them very seriously,” CBS said in a statement to Variety. “Both complaints were acted upon immediately with investigations and subsequent disciplinary action. While we were not able to corroborate all of the allegations, we took this action to address behavior and management style, and have received no further complaints since this was implemented.”

This A-list actor told Jessica Chastain to ‘calm down’ after the Harvey Weinstein allegations

And she was having none of it

Jessica Chastain

The past two months have been consumed by sexual abuse awareness, with the movement started by the brave women who came out with their statements against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Harvey Weinstein’s accusers now amount to over 50 women, with alleged victims ranging from Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow to Cara Delevingne and Rose McGowan, with even those who haven’t experienced harassment speaking out to stand with their sisters. Hollywood actress Jessica Chastain has been one of the most vocal actresses in the Harvey Weinstein sexual allegations scandal, but according to the actress it cost her a lot of backlash.

‘I was tweeting a lot of the time and actually got an email from a well-known actor that said, “Calm down,”’ the 40-year-old actress explained during a recent appearance on the Graham Norton Show. ‘I found that heartbreaking and can only think he didn’t understand the movement that was happening.’

‘I’m going to speak my mind about any injustice that I see,’ she explained to The Daily Beast previously. ‘I’m not afraid of anything in terms of that and I think the greatest myth that an industry can create is to make people feel they’re easily replaceable. I’m not going to allow that into my life.’

In terms of the current movement of awareness, she continued: ‘I feel hopeful. I feel happy. I know it’s devastating, it’s terrible, it’s heartbreaking. These stories that are coming out are just so sad. But what makes me hopeful is that people are taking responsibility for their silence, their inaction.’

She continued: ‘In no way should we, as a society, look at the victims and show any sense of blame. But anyone involved in an industry where there is abuse like this, you are part of the problem. And your inaction makes you complicit. So what’s happening now is…I think everyone is starting to look at where they fit in this industry.’

In an explosive new investigation, The New York Times revealed how disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct was enabled by those around him. According to the Times, the agents told the women to “stay quiet when things went wrong.” One of the agents who once confronted Weinstein even acknowledged that “sometimes he was the only game in town.” The Times also reports that low-level staffers were “required to procure [Weinstein’s] penile injections for erectile dysfunction.”

George Takei Denies Sexual Assault Allegations: ‘The Events Simply Did Not Occur’

Star Trek legend George Takei has responded to accusations that he sexually assaulted a former model in 1981.

According to George, the alleged encounter never happened.

He tweeted:

“I’m writing to respond to the accusations made by Scott R. Bruton,. I want to assure you all that I am as shocked and bewildered at these claims as you must feel reading them. The events he describes back in the 1980s simply did not occur, and I do not know why he has claimed them now. I have wracked my brain to ask if I remember Mr. Brunton, and I cannot say I do. But I do take these claims very seriously, and I wanted to provide my response thoughtfully and not out of the moment.

Right now it is a he said / he said situation, over alleged events nearly 40 years ago. But those that know me understand that non-consensual acts are so antithetical to my values and my practices, the very idea that someone would accuse me of this is quite personally painful. Brad, who is 100 percent beside me on this, as my life partner of more than 30 years and now my husband, stands fully by my side. I cannot tell you how vital it has been to have his unwavering support and love in these difficult times. Thanks to many of you for all the kind words and trust. It means so much to us.”

Scott has yet to respond to George’s denial.

Netflix Just Canceled a Louis C.K. Stand-Up Special Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Netflix is the latest company to cut ties with comedian Louis C.K. following allegations that he masturbated in front of several women without consent.

The company announced Friday that it will not move forward with Louis C.K.’s second planned stand-up comedy special. Netflix inked a two-special deal with C.K. in February; the first special aired in April.

“The allegations made by several women in The New York Times about Louis C.K.’s behavior are disturbing,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “Louis’s unprofessional and inappropriate behavior with female colleagues has led us to decide not to produce a second stand-up special, as had been planned.”

Five women accused the comedian of sexual misconduct in a New York Times investigation published on Nov. 9. C.K. has yet to address the allegations, but a spokesperson said he will issue a written statement in the coming days.

Netflix is only the latest company to distance itself from Louis C.K. Distribution company Orchard Films scrapped the release of his latest film, I Love You, Daddy. Meanwhile, HBO announced that it was dropping the Lucky Louie star from appearing in an upcoming comedy and removing his past projects from its On Demand services. FX, which has worked with the comedian on a number of the his projects, said it was “troubled” by the allegations and that it would review the situation.

Kevin Spacey Won’t Receive the International Emmy Founders Award After Sexual Harassment Allegations

The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced Monday that it will not present Kevin Spacey with its 2017 International Emmy Founders Award.

The news comes the day after Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp came forward with the allegation that a then-26-year-old House of Cards star Kevin Spacey tried to have sex with Rapp when he was 14-years-old.

Late Sunday, Spacey issued a public apology, though he said he didn’t remember the incident. He also used the statement to come out as gay.

“The International Academy has announced today that in light of recent events it will not honor Kevin Spacey with the 2017 International Emmy Founders Award,” the organization said in a statement.

The Academy had announced the award in June, saying that the Oscar winner and House of Cards actor was “an individual who crosses cultural boundaries to touch humanity.”

The award was scheduled to be presented at the International Emmy Awards Gala on November 20.

The rescinded award follows Netflix’s announcement that it would end House of Cards, in which the 58-year-old stars, after its upcoming sixth and final season.

Netflix and producer Media Rights Capital released a statement regarding the news: “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey.
“In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

mes Toback Rants Against Sexual Harassment Allegations

Director James Toback denied sexual harassment allegations made by Julianne Moore, Selma Blair and others in an angry rant to Rolling Stone on Friday, October 27.

“I’ve struggled seriously to make movies with very little money, that I write, that I direct, that mean my life to me. The idea that I would offer a part to anyone for any other reason than that he or she was gonna be the best of anyone I could find is so disgusting to me,” he told the magazine. “And anyone who says it is a lying c–ksucker or c–t or both. Can I be any clearer than that?”

“Anyone who says that, I just want to spit in his or her f–king face,” the Black and White director continued, saying that he was sitting with Sienna Miller who starred in his latest film, The Private Life of a Modern Woman. “No one who’s ever worked with me would ever say anything like that. No one.”

In a story published by the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, October 22, more than 30 women accused the director of sexual harassment, which he denied. Several of the women said he approached them on the streets of NYC, offering them a part in an upcoming movie before making an unwanted sexual advance.

In a follow-up story, the Times claimed that an additional 200 women had come forward to detail similar encounters with the Oscar-nominated writer.

“… add one more. Exact same playbook by James Toback when I encountered him near Central Park, Today anchor Natalie Morales tweeted on Tuesday, October 24.

“In all honesty, I thought he was just a creep hitting on me with the oldest line in the book,” the 45-year-old told the Times.

Moore, 56, also detailed a similar incident, tweeting on Tuesday that Toback “approached me in the 80’s on Columbus Ave with the same language – wanted me to audition, come to his apt,” she wrote. ” I refused. One month later he did it again with the EXACT same language. I said don’t u remember u did this before?”

In an interview with Vanity Fair on Thursday, October 26, actresses Blair and Rachel McAdams recounted their experiences with the 72-year-old director.

Blair, 45, claimed that she met Toback in his hotel room at his insistence and told her that she had to remove her clothes so he could see how her body moved.

“I told him I was uncomfortable. But he continued to coax me — saying that this was in no way a come-on. This was part of training,” the Legally Blonde actress said. “I was so private about my body. I do remember looking down at the script and seeing my bare chest and not being able to focus on a thing but the words and my face being so hot and puffy and feeling so ashamed.”

She claimed he then asked her to have sexual relations and when she refused, he blocked the door. She ended up complying, letting him rub himself against her leg, so that she could get out of there “without being raped.”

The Notebook star told Vanity Fair she was just 21 when she was invited to come back to his hotel room to discuss a role in his film Harvard Man.

“Pretty quickly the conversation turned quite sexual,” McAdams alleged.”He said, ‘You know, I just have to tell you. I have masturbated countless times today thinking about you since we met at your audition.’”

The Mean Girls star was eventually able to excuse herself from the room.

“I was very lucky that he didn’t actually physically assault me in any way,” the 38-year-old said. “Sexual harassment is so pervasive, many women seem to have their own story. I just think there is an ‘anything goes’ [attitude] in Hollywood that gets taken too far. And there is a sense that you don’t have to be responsible for your actions — there is just no limit to what you can be subjected to. This has to stop. We need to start acknowledging what an epidemic this is, and what a deep-seated problem this is.”

The claims against Toback come in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal that saw the Hollywood producer fired from his own studio after the New York Times published an expose earlier this month detailing three decades of sexual harassment and assault allegations.

Fox Renewed Bill O’Reilly’s Contract Despite Knowing of Sexual Harassment Allegations

(NEW YORK) — The Fox News Channel says the company knew a news analyst planned to file a sexual harassment lawsuit against Bill O’Reilly when it renewed the popular personality’s contract in February.

The New York Times reported Saturday the company renewed the TV host’s contract after he reached a $ 32 million settlement with the analyst.

In a statement, 21st Century Fox defended its decision because it said he had settled the matter personally. It also said O’Reilly and the woman had agreed the financial terms would be kept confidential.

The company says O’Reilly’s new contract had added protections that allowed Fox to dismiss him if other allegations surfaced.

O’Reilly was ousted months later when it was revealed Fox had paid five women a total of $ 13 million to keep quiet about harassment allegations.

The new analyst’s allegations included repeated harassment, a nonconsensual sexual relationship and the sending of gay pornography and other sexually explicit material to the woman, according to people briefed on the matter who spoke to The New York Times.

The settlement was by far the largest of a half dozen deals made by O’Reilly or the company to settle harassment allegations against the host, according to the newspaper.

It was reached in January. In February, 21st Century Fox granted O’Reilly’s a four-year extension on a $ 25 million-a-year contract. In April, it fired him.

O’Reilly has called his firing from Fox News Channel a “political hit job” and that his network’s parent company made a business decision to get rid of him. He also has said his conscience was clear in how he dealt with women. O’Reilly could not be reached for comment Saturday.

The most-watched figure in cable TV was dismissed by 21st Century Fox nine months after the company removed its founding CEO, Roger Ailes, following harassment charges. Ailes died at his home in Los Angeles last May.

The company said it has taken numerous steps to change its workplace environment.

“21st Century Fox has taken concerted action to transform Fox News, including installing new leaders, overhauling management and on-air talent, expanding training, and increasing the channels through which employees can report harassment or discrimination,” Fox said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press. “These changes come from the top, with Lachlan and James Murdoch personally leading the effort to promote civility and respect on the job, while maintaining the company’s long-held commitment to a diverse, inclusive and creative workplace.”

O’Reilly hosts his “No Spin News” podcast on his website, http://www.billoreilly.com, contributes to Glenn Beck’s radio program on TheBlaze and continues to write books in his best-selling series of historical “Killing” books, including his newest release, “Killing England: The Brutal Struggle for American Independence.”

Tamron Hall’s New Show In Limbo After Weinstein Allegations

Tamron Hall has found herself in the middle of the widening Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal. The Hollywood producer has been accused to sexually harassing, assaulting and raping a growing list of women that includes Hollywood actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Rose McGowan, Angelina Jolie and more.

Unfortunately, Hall, after leaving NBC when she learned she’d be bumped from her highly rated Today Show time slot to make room for ex-Fox host Megyn Kelly, signed a deal for a daytime talk show with the Weinstein Company. Now that Harvey has been fired from the company, what happens with Hall’s show?

The Huffington Post reports:

In an exclusive interview with HuffPost, Hall said she was in her home state of Texas visiting Safe Haven Shelter for Women when she found out about the Times exposé, and said she found the allegations and what Weinstein admitted to directly to be “horrifying.”

“It’s a woman’s worst nightmare to be in a situation where you believe someone more powerful has control over your life,” Hall said. “I immediately thought about the women who have suffered in silence and were paralyzed by fear; fear that I’ve seen with domestic violence survivors; fear that I’ve seen when I interviewed women who were raped on their college campuses.”

Hall said she first got to know Weinstein last February shortly after she decided to leave NBC and MSNBC when they announced that they were replacing her and Al Roker with Megyn Kelly for the third hour of the “Today” show. While Weinstein never behaved inappropriately with her, Hall said the only thing that matters is what he has admitted to doing and what his women accusers have said.

Hall spoke to Weinstein at 5 a.m. the morning after the Times story came out and confronted him with the allegations and his admission, she said. She described her approach to Weinstein in the call as one of “take no prisoners.” And while Weinstein apologized to her and told her he needed help, Hall is now working with her agents to figure out next steps on a talk show development deal she signed with The Weinstein Co. three months ago.

Hall’s sister Renate was killed in 2004 after a series of violent altercations with a boyfriend who became a person of interest in the case. Despite that, the murder remains unsolved.

A few weeks ago, a video of A$ AP Bari forcibly removing the sheets from a naked woman in a hotel room appeared online. After initially saying the vid was fake, Bari came forward to apologize for the incident.

R. Kelly Denies Sex Cult Allegations in New Video

R. Kelly is returning to the stage despite allegations that he’s holding and harming women in a “cult,” which he calls “a bunch of crap” in a new message for his fans.

The R&B star recorded a video, which he posted on Twitter Thursday night, addressing the claims detailed in a recent BuzzFeed News article. “I just want to let all of my fans out there know that, despite all of the crap y’all hearing, I will be coming to the East Coast to do my show — and believe me, y’all, it’s a bunch of crap,” he says.

According to parents interviewed for the BuzzFeed story, titled “R. Kelly Is Holding Women Against Their Will in a ‘Cult,’ Parents Told Police,” Kelly has been allegedly abusing their daughters and they reported these claims to authorities. Three of the singer-songwriter’s former assistants also called Kelly a “puppet master” who held one of them “against a tree and slapped her outside a Subway sandwich shop in spring 2013.”

Shortly after the report was published, Kelly’s lawyer released a statement denying the accusations. “Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed at the recent revelations attributed to him,” the statement read. “Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such allegations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name.”

Roger Ailes Denies Megyn Kelly’s Sexual Harassment Allegations Detailed in Her Upcoming Memoir

Fox News CEO Roger Ailes is denying the sexual harassment allegations Megyn Kelly made about him in her upcoming memoir.

On Nov. 4, a chapter from the 45-year-old Fox News anchor’s upcoming memoir, Settle for More, leaked, in which Kelly said Ailes’ made inappropriate remarks about her clothing and suggested he would help advance her career “in exchange for sexual favors.”

Kelly claims in the chapter (first released by Radar Online) that after months of harassment, the 76-year-old “crossed a new line” in January 2006 when he grabbed her and repeatedly tried to kiss her. Upon shoving him away, the journalist alleges Ailes asked her the “ominous question” of “When is your contract up?” before trying to kiss her for a third time. Kelly says she never succumbed to any of his advances that she claims stopped after six months once she reported Ailes’ behavior to her supervisor.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Ailes is denying the allegations that Kelly details in her book.

“I categorically deny the allegations Megyn Kelly makes about me. I worked tirelessly to promote and advance her career, as Megyn herself admitted to Charlie Rose. Watch that interview and then decide for yourself,” Ailes said in a statement provided to PEOPLE by his attorney, Susan Estrich. “My attorneys have restricted me from commenting further — so suffice it to say that no good deed goes unpunished.”

After the chapter leaked, Estrich told PEOPLE in a statement: “Mr. Ailes denies her allegations of sexual harassment or misconduct of any kind.” The statement also referred back to Kelly’s words about Ailes on Charlie Rose: “I really care about Roger. And he has been nothing but good to me. And he’s been very loyal. And he’s had my back. And he’s looked out for me.”

The Kelly File airs weekdays (9 p.m. ET) on Fox News Channel.

Brad Pitt Has Been Cleared of Child Abuse Allegations, Sources Say

The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services has concluded its investigation into child abuse allegations against Brad Pitt, multiple sources tell PEOPLE.

“It was a full and thorough investigation and the determination has been made that no charges should be brought,” says a source, adding that there was no finding of abuse.

“The likely next step is a referral to family court so that the matter of custody can be determined; there is no permanent custody agreement currently in place, only an arrangement pending the outcome of this investigation. Now, with this conclusion, custody can be determined,” the source explains.

A rep for Angelina Jolie responded in a statement to PEOPLE: “The job of the DCFS is to make sure the children are in a safe and secure situation. As we said earlier this week, childcare professionals encouraged a legal agreement accepted and signed by both sides that was in the best interest of the children. Angelina said from the beginning that she felt she had to take action for the health of the family and is relieved that after their 8-week involvement, the DCFS is now satisfied the safeguards are put in place that will allow the children heal.”

A rep for Jolie could not be reached immediately for comment, and a rep for Pitt declined to comment.

The DCFS launched the investigation after Pitt allegedly got “verbally abusive” and “physical” with Maddox, his and Jolie‘s oldest child, on the couple’s private plane on Sept. 14. Jolie filed for divorce five days later.

During the DCFS investigation, both Jolie, 41, and Pitt, 52, agreed to a voluntary parenting plan, with the children living with Jolie and supervised visitation for Pitt, as well as family and individual counseling .

The investigation comes to a close just days after Jolie released a new statement saying that the former couple had reached a legal agreement about the custody of their six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and 8-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

However, other sources close to the situation maintain the pair have not reached any new agreements or settled their differences, and Pitt still plans to push for joint custody.

Pitt filed a response on Nov. 4 requesting joint custody after Jolie, 41, requested sole physical custody in her Sept. 19 divorce filing.

He is expected to make his first red carpet appearance at the premiere of his new film Allied on Wednesday night.

16 Shocking Allegations In Scientology Documentary ‘Going Clear’

The Church of Scientology has long been a controversial institution among both the religious community and entertainment business. But the latest documentary from Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney, “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” explores the secrets of the organization through interviews with former high-ranking officials and former members in a way never seen before.

Based on the 2013 book of the same name by Lawrence Wright, “Going Clear” not only exposes details about Scientology but also serves as an in-depth explainer for those unfamiliar with the group. The Church has spoken out against the film (read their full statement here) as have its celebrity members. But whether you’ve studied Scientology closely or merely know it as “the religion with Tom Cruise,” watching “Going Clear” is a powerful, stunning and emotionally overwhelming experience that will likely leave you with your mouth agape. Here are the most shocking allegations put forth in “Going Clear,” which made its HBO debut on Sunday night:

1. L. Ron Hubbard’s Scientology creation story
When Scientologists reach level OT III, they are shown the “secret materials,” as director and former member Paul Haggis described them: Hubbard’s hand-written account of the creation myth. According to this, 75 million years ago a galactic dictator named Xenu froze people and dropped their bodies into volcanoes. From there, the disembodied spirits, or thetans, apparently jumped into newborns bodies. According to Hubbard, these multiple thetans crowded in our bodies are the source of our anxieties and fears.

l ron hubbard

2. Hubbard spent time in a black magic cult
Before founding Scientology, Hubbard befriended rocket and chemical engineer Jack Parsons who was a part of black magic cult Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), which followed the teachings of Aleister Crowley. According to “Going Clear,” Hubbard became Parsons scribe and assistant on a magical operation to impregnate a goddess-like woman to create the anti-Christ.

3. Members were allegedly thrown overboard as punishment
Hubbard created Ethics, or punishments for his auditors who made mistakes during sessions. They were then pushed overboard on his ships into the water, which was “30 feet, 35 feet” below, according to Hana Whitfield, one of the original Sea Org members.

4. Hubbard told his second wife he murdered their daughter
When Sara Northup, Hubbard’s second wife, threatened to leave him unless he got psychiatric help, he reportedly kidnapped their daughter Alexis. According to written accounts from Northup, Hubbard told her he “cut [Alexis] into little pieces” and dropped her in a river. Then he would call back and tell Sara that their daughter was alive.

5. There was a Scientology “prison camp”
Former Church member Sylvia “Spanky” Taylor, who was once the liaison between the Church and John Travolta, was sent to the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF), or what she described as the “prison camp where you’d go for re-indoctrination.” According to the film, when sent to the RPF, people would have to do hard labor for “30 hours on, 3 hours off,” eat table scraps and sleep on dirty, wet mattresses.

scientology

6. The FBI raid on the Church was the biggest in history at the time
On July 8, 1977, the FBI raided Scientology’s Los Angeles, Hollywood and Washington, D.C. locations, which at the time was the bureau’s biggest raid ever.

7. The Church stole government documents
According to the film, in the ’70s, many Scientologists were directed to get jobs in Department of Justice and IRS offices in order to steal documents against or relating to the Church.

8. The Church apparently has a blackmail folder on John Travolta
According to Wright in the film, when there were rumors of Travolta wanting to leave Scientology, the Church created a “black PR package” that has “all the damaging material” from his private auditing sessions. Travolta also reportedly refused to have his sessions video taped, but secret cameras were hidden anyway.

john travolta

9. The Church investigated the IRS
One of the Church’s goals was to be recognized by the IRS as a fully tax-exempt religion, according to former senior executive of the Church Mark “Marty” Rathbun. Thousands of Scientologists reportedly filed 2,400 total lawsuits against IRS employees, and private investigators were sent to IRS conventions to obtain information. According to journalist Tony Ortega, Scientology leader David Miscavige told the IRS commissioner that the lawsuits would go away if the Church was given tax-exempt status. The Church was granted exemption in October 1993.

10. Tom Cruise and the Church allegedly wire-tapped Nicole Kidman’s phone
According to the film, the Church noticed Tom Cruise slipping away from Scientology during his marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise reportedly said he wanted to have Kidman’s phone wiretapped, which the Church did at his request.

11. Cruise may have had employees pimp his cars for 40 cents an hour
Sea Org members make 40 cents an hour, according to Ortega, who says, “I don’t think there’s any way Tom Cruise is not aware of that.” According to the film, they have “tricked out his cars and motorcycles” and hanger in Santa Monica, California, and installed the audiovisual equipment at his home.

tom cruise

12. The Church supposedly found Cruise a new girlfriend
According to Wright, Cruise was “overheard to complain that he needed a new girlfriend” when he was in Spain at the opening of a new Scientology center. The Church then found a young Scientologist, Nazanin Boniadi, and reportedly had her braces removed, bought her $ 20,000 of clothes and colored her hair “to Cruise’s liking.” She was then told she would be Cruise’ girlfriend, but the relationship soon ended. Boniadi apparently signed a non-disclosure agreement with the Church and has since become a well-known actress in “Homeland,” “Iron Man,” among other films and shows.

13. Paul Haggis left because of the the Church’s homophobic stance
Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis (“Crash,” “Casino Royale”) left Scientology in 2009 after 30 years when his two gay daughters told him how they were being treated and harassed by the Church. According to Church doctrines, the religion views homosexuality as a disease. Haggis then wrote a now-famous letter of his resignation from the Church.

paul haggis daughter

14. Scientology’s book value is about $ 1.5 billion
Ortega obtained recent tax records that revealed the main three tiers of the Church (which is a non-profit organization) have a combined book value of $ 1.5 billion.

15. Sea Org members were allegedly tortured to the sounds of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”
In 2004, Miscaviage apparently ordered the top members of the Sea Org to live in what was known as The Hole in the Chuch’s secret Gold Base in California. In the film, former members say they were told to confess their crimes against the Church in order to leave The Hole. Beyond beatings and one man being ordered to “mop up the bathroom floor with his tongue,” another method of abuse was when members were forced to play musical chairs to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Those participating were “fighting to stay” in the Church: whoever didn’t have a seat when the music stopped was expelled from the Church.

16. If members leave the Church their friends & family are forced to “disconnect”
The biggest reason to not leave the Church for many Scientologists is fear of “disconnection.” This is when all friends and family members still with the Church are told to cut ties with those who leave, or those deemed Potential Trouble Sources (PTS), or Suppressive Persons (SPs). Many former members included in the film haven’t seen or spoken to their family or friends since they left.

“Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” airs again on Monday, March 30 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
