Miss America Says Transgender Women Should Be Allowed To Compete

Nia Imani Franklin, representing New York state, was crowned the 98th Miss America in Atlantic City on September 9. The 25-year-old is the ninth Black woman to win the pageant. The North Carolina native is making the media rounds and opened up about the ban against transgender women competing in the competition.

According to Advocate.com, “One of the competition’s official rules is that you have to be a ‘natural born woman’ to compete, therefore eliminating transgender women and non-binary women.” In an interview on The Clay Cane Show on Sirius XM Urban View, Cane asked Franklin, “Do you think trans women should be allowed to compete?”

Franklin responded, “That’s something I haven’t given a lot of thought to. I could see the organization may be going into a different direction in the future, but at this time our goal is just to focus on women who want to further their education.”

She continued, “If trans women want to compete I think they should be able to — that’s not something I think we are really putting too much emphasis on as far as, ‘Are you trans? Check this box’ when you compete. When I competed, in my application, there was nothing that asked me if I was a trans woman or not, so we’re definitely not discriminating.”

Cane did confirm there is currently a ban on transgender women, but Franklin said it was her opinion that trans women should be able to compete. Click here to hear Nia Imani Franklin in her own words.

Lena Waithe Says Cutting Her Hair Allowed Her to Let Go of a ‘Piece of Femininity’

After shaving off her signature locs in July, Lena Waithe has revealed how she arrived at the decision to cut her hair.

While speaking to Variety on the red carpet of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual grants banquet on Thursday, The Chi creator explained that she had been wanting a change for a while, but felt apprehensive over how others would react. However, she was eventually able to overcome her doubts and go through with the haircut.

“I felt like I was holding onto a piece of femininity that would make the world feel comfortable with who I am,” Waithe said. “I think I thought for a long time, ‘Oh, if I cut my hair, I’ll be a stud, I’ll be—in the gay world, there’s a lot of categories—I’ll be a stud or I’ll be a butch,’ and I’ve always thought, ‘Well, no, I’m not that, I’m still soft.’ And I said, ‘Oh, I gotta put that down ’cause that’s something that’s outside of me.’”

Fellow celebrities like Mindy Kaling and Laverne Cox were quick to praise Waithe’s honesty. “Good morning, , you always have the best answers,” Kaling tweeted.

The scene Maisie Williams wasn’t even allowed to watch in ‘Game of Thrones’

TwitterFacebook

Game of Thrones stars — they’re just like us! Especially when it comes to being mortified at having to watch those graphic sex scenes with their parents.

Maisie Williams gave an interview to The Australian recently and described just how weird it was to work around the nearly NC-17 levels of raciness when she first joined the show at 14-year-old.

Her family did their best to protect her underage eyes, especially with one particular scene in Season 1:

Williams went on to say that, “Most of the gory stuff I was part of, and it’s not scary when you’re there shooting it. No one’s really getting their face ripped off. So it’s quite exciting really.” Read more…

Why aren’t the Love Island girls allowed to be funny?

Sort it out ITV2.

REX

Love Island 2018 is going from strength to strength, with this week’s six shock exits and two new additions shaking up the couples and friendship groups.

Drama has undoubtedly built, but strangely, we’re only really seeing it from the girls’ side, and on closer inspection that seems like a theme from the start.

While the boys’ air time has been taken up by a lot of Jack’s impressions and group Yorkshire accents, the footage of the girls has focused on cruel digs and catty arguments.

REX

Take this week for example when the girls were taken for a day trip to reconnect after Georgia-new-jack-kiss-gate.

The footage flitted between the boys and the girls, with the boys roleplaying as Yorkshire farmers in the sun, while the girls were crying and shouting at eachother.

REX

The easy answer? The boys get on better than the girls.

That might be the case, with this season’s boys seeming to have a particularly close bond, but why do the girls then have to endure all of the drama?

With Megan, Georgia, Ellie and Laura, there have been a lot of tears and arguing, and of course given the nature of the show, that has to be aired.

But why aren’t we seeing their funny side too? Let’s not pretend that they don’t have one.

Frankie and Grace. REX.

Take Grace for instance – we only saw her sense of humour when she made a dig after her exit, joking that keeping her Love Island water bottle was her highlight.

Why hadn’t we seen her dry sense of humour before? If we had, she might have been spared eviction – all we had seen previously was her cutting hair and saying she liked cashew nuts – It’s no wonder she was voted out.

REX

The boys keep citing ‘banter’ and ‘good chat’ as reasons for fancying the girls- but we’re yet to see it.

Why? Because it’s not getting airtime – and in this day and age that’s not OK, not to mention it puts them at a greater risk of getting voted off.

REX

It feels like we’re reinforcing the tired gender stereotype that women aren’t as funny as men, something that considering millions of people tune into Love Island, is actually pretty harmful.

So please Love Island, from a team of funny girls, stop doing us a disservice. You don’t have to lose the drama, but at least give the girls a break and let us see their funny side.

This is 2018 after all, and hopefully be now we all know that girls can do a hell of a lot more than cry and shout.

ZTE allowed to resume some U.S. business activities just months after 7-year ban issued

TwitterFacebook

ZTE, the Chinese smartphone maker that was banned from operating in the U.S. this past April, may already be resuming its stateside operations. And it has President Donald Trump to thank for the assist.

According to a document obtained by Bloomberg, due to pressure from the Trump administration, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security has authorized ZTE to resume some business activities as a deal is worked out regarding its ban in the country.

In April, ZTE was banned from importing phone parts from the U.S. for repeatedly misleading the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security. The U.S. intelligence community also issued a warning to U.S. consumers, urging them not to purchase phones made by certain Chinese manufacturers — including ZTE — due to spying and security concerns. Because of the ban, ZTE had ceased all U.S. operations in May. The ban was supposed to last for 7 years. Read more…

Single Black Women Weren’t Allowed Into This Liberian Restaurant Until This Happened

Single black women unaccompanied by a male companion in Liberia had slim chances of getting into SAJJ restuarant, a Lebanese-owned and run entertainment spot—that is until the Liberian government stepped in. Late last week, after multitudes of complaints, the government immediately closed the restaurant’s doors—and fined the owners $ 3,000 for racial discrimination.

In a release posted on its Facebook on Tuesday morning, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) announced that it had restored the restaurant’s license “following the entity’s compliance with the punitive measures the ministry instituted.”

YEARS OF OF DISCRIMINATION:

For almost a decade, SAJJ was said to have implemented a discriminatory policy, which prohibited single black women from entering the entertainment spot without a male companion, but that it was not applied to non-black women.

Protests began in front of the restaurant last Friday after three women were denied entry because they were black and unaccompanied by a male. According to the Bush Chicken, the restaurant has had the policy in place for almost a decade.

MICAT, which is the regulatory body for tourism in the country, said it investigated the claims of the women protesters and found them substantiated. “The ministry’s investigation revealed that SAJJ did carry out such policy, which is discriminatory and against the law.”

As a result, MICAT suspended SAJJ’s tourism license until a set of actions were met, including paying a fine of U.S.$ 3000 into the government’s revenue, issuing a public apology to Liberian women, and instituting a corporate social responsibility project not less than U.S.$ 2500 to identify and support a local NGO that works with disadvantaged young women.

Denying single black women from entering and allowing single white women entrance, is not fair. You cannot be operating a business in my country with that kind of policy, so this is why I have come to shut down this business. I do not know when it will be opened,” said Princess Turkulon, assistant minister for MICAT.

Turkulon said SAJJ’s policy of denying unaccompanied single black women by their male counterparts was “spoiling the government’s name. You cannot own a business and discriminate against the women of Liberia.”

Ms. Facia Harris, a prominent female journalist, said:

I have the right to go out for a drink without being accompanied by a male because I have my own money. You cannot tell me not to enter an entertainment spot because I am a single black woman, but single white women are free to walk in unaccompanied. This has been going on for too long, and we have reached the breaking point, enough is enough. You cannot stop me from entering your entertainment area because I am not escorted by a man. Should I hijack a male to bring me to eat when I have my own money? You either change your policy or shut your business down.”

These are the things Meghan and Harry aren’t allowed to wear on their wedding day

And wait ’til you see the wedding guest rules

Meghan Markle visits Titanic Belfast.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK – 23 Mar 2018

Royal fashion etiquette is a law unto itself, from dictating which kind of bag Kate Middleton should wear to whether or not Princess Diana was allowed to wear gloves. So it comes as no surprise that the Royal wedding has a very strict dress code.

The wedding invites went out earlier this month, and the formal dress code was set: day dresses and hats for the women; uniforms, morning coats, or lounge suits for the men. But there are a few other rules wedding guests are expected to follow, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, so here’s a breakdown which will especially be handy for non-Royal and non-British guests – well, we wouldn’t want a sartorial faux pas from Meghan’s Suits castmates now, would we?

Female guests should wear hats and day dresses for the day

Beatrice and Eugenie didn’t just wear hats to become the meme of the year (well, pretty sure that wasn’t their intention either), they had to. Ladies must wear hats in church as a sign of respect, and the bigger and more jovial the better. However, hats aren’t recommended for the evening, as that’s when the tiaras come out. For the day, dresses are expected to be on the conservative side (it’s a church wedding after all), and colour is encouraged, though of course black and white are discouraged.

For the evening, expect guests to wear fancier and longer dresses.

Male guests should wear uniforms, morning coats or lounge suits

According to Town & Country,  military men are encouraged to wear their uniforms, but failing that, a morning coat and all the trimmings is a must. Think tail coat, waistcoat, tie etc, though if that’s not their bag, a lounge suit, which despite the name is really just a nice suit, is allowed. However it’s deemed ‘inappropriate’ for men to wear hats, and polished black shoes are a must.

Prince Harry will probably wear a uniform

When Prince William married Kate, he wore his uniform, and as Harry was in the military too, it’s likely he will follow suit as it’s traditional for Royal men to do so.

Meghan Markle’s bouquet will have myrtle

According to Bustle, it’s a Royal tradition to include myrtle in the wedding bouquet, as it symbolises love. It all started when Victoria included a sprig in her bouquet, and it has since been grown in the Royal garden. Princess Diana, Kate Middleton and the Queen all had it in theirs.

Meghan Markle will have a classic manicure

No bold colours for Meghan, as only neutral manis are allowed for Royal events.

The bride’s wedding ring must contain Welsh gold

Another tradition, started by the Queen’s parents. When they got married, they got given a gold nugget from a mine in North Wales, and a bit has been used for each Royal bride since.

Meghan Markle’s wedding dress will be by a British designer

This isn’t official, but since Queen Victoria, The Queen, Princess Diana and Kate Middleton all wore British designers, it’s safe to assume Meghan will follow suit. Which ties into the whole Erdem designing the wedding dress very nicely indeed.

Ice Skating: Is the ‘Iron Lotus’ Allowed or Even Physically Possible?

The Winter Olympics are halfway done in Pyeongchang, Korea. The pairs figure skating competition wrapped earlier this week, with the German team of Savchenko and Massot taking the gold. Their routine featured many dazzling and dangerous maneuvers, leading some fans to ask: can pairs do the “Iron Lotus” in real-life?

The “Iron Lotus” is a fictional move from the 2007 skating satire Blades of Glory. In the comedy, skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) team up after their solo careers are derailed. They put their rivalry aside with goals of winning the World Winter Sport Games (an Olympics-esque competition) as a pair. Their signature move is called the “Iron Lotus,” a move so risky, if landed, would ensure a victory.

The Iron Lotus Broken Down

The “Iron Lotus” may be fake, but it’s comprised of a few legitimate skating moves strung together.

The first part of the “Iron Lotus,” where the “man” spins the “woman” around by her feet, is called a “headbanger” or “bounce spin.” In the movie, this was accomplished with wire work and CGI. In real life, the male partner pulls his female partner in by one leg and swings her around by both feet.

As you can see, the move is very dangerous as the woman can hit her head on the ice. Due to the risk factor, this move is NOT allowed in Olympic-eligible competition, although fans may see it in exhibitions or shows.

At this point in the “Iron Lotus,” the male partner lets go of his partner’s feet, sending her soaring through the air. While there are throws in pairs skating, the female partner is either caught by the man (i.e. a twist) or lands on her own feet after being thrown (a throw jump, which is simply just a solo jump with a  partner assist).

In the “Iron Lotus,” the centrifugal force from the spinning would send the female partner out, not up. So from a physics perspective, the “Iron Lotus” really isn’t feasible.

The Finishing Move

Finally, the flying kick the male partner does while the female partner is in the air is known as a butterfly, It’s actually a pretty common ice skating move and used as a spin entry.

However, in the “Iron Lotus,” the two skaters are essentially jumping towards each other. Such moves are also not permitted in eligible competition, especially when one partner’s blade nears the other’s face. In Blades of Glory, a fictional Korean pair tries the “Iron Lotus,” but the male partner decapitates his partner.

In eligible competition, pairs do spin side by side, but aren’t supposed to drift towards each other. The Canadian pair of Jessica Dube and Bryce Davidson learned this the hard way in 2007. The duo were performing side-by-side camel spins and Bryce started drifting towards Jessica, clipping her in the face with his skate blade. Jessica required plastic surgery to repair the facial laceration, but luckily her eyes were undamaged.

Finally, Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy wouldn’t be able to compete, as the governing body of the sport strictly defines a pair as one man and one woman. They would be able to compete, however, in the annual Gay Games. The Gay Games permit mixed (male and female) and open pairs.

It’s OK To Be Fat. Go Ahead. You’re Allowed.

I know the fat shamers on the anti-fat Reddit threads and the “concern trolls” all over the world will disagree heartily, but I am allowed to take up as much space as I want to take up. And, you know what else? I do not OWE IT TO ANYONE to be fat and healthy, either.

Contrary to popular opinion, I can be fat and healthy if I want to be. I can also be fat and unhealthy. Fat people have existed as long as humans have existed, so get used to us. We’re not going to go and hide just because a bunch of people who have a lot of time to waste on a computer are creating hate sights dedicated to making fun of our fat body. I’ve been fat for over 30 years. My fat skin is extra thick and used to your vile and mean comments. They roll right off my back. (And right over my fat ass, too.) And, the mean threads that are started by the fat haters actually fuel my fire and serve as a reminder as to how much there is still to do in the Body Acceptance movement.

To me, it’s plain and simple: You get to exist any way you want to exist. As Pink so eloquently put it recently when being attacked about her body: “I’m not worried about me. And I’m not worried about you, either. I am perfectly fine, perfectly happy, and my healthy, voluptuous and crazy strong body is having some much deserved time off.”

Pink is saying what a lot of us “fatties” in the Body Acceptance movement repeat over and over. “My body, my business. Your body, your business.” I have had my run-ins with people (total strangers) trying to police my body and the customers of my lingerie boutique. I even was on CNN talking about the right to be fat and wear lingerie. My boutique and I got embroiled in a fierce media debate about whether or not my plus size lingerie boutique glorifies obesity.

I think it’s happiness that really infuriates and confuses some fat haters. People are often baffled when they see happy fat people. And when you add in the idea that we are not addicted to dieting or working out or obsessed with the notion that we should become some thin version of ourselves, well, that really throws the shamers and haters for a loop. I literally had to defend, on national TV, our right to exist as fat women who want to wear sexy and very revealing lingerie. All bodies are good bodies. All bodies deserve to be celebrated. No one body is better than another body.

So, yes, you can EXIST and take up more space than your neighbor. You do not have to quality that existence with a “but, I am fat and healthy.” You don’t have to justify anything to anyone about your body and what it looks like on the outside or the inside. The people who want to police your body are just sad, unhappy people with way too much time on their hands. They have nothing better to do. Me, on the other hand, I have shit to do. And, the first item on my TO-DO list is to help fat, thick, curvy women to find some sexy lingerie and help them celebrate their fat, luscious bodies.
