5 Indie Games With Amazing Female Leads

Samus Aran and Lara Croft will inevitably come up in any conversation about fantastic female protagonists. Both of them are badass and well-equipped to battle waves of enemies or perilous dungeons. But what about the heroes who don’t usually get a taste of the limelight? These five indie games showcase some of the best badass leading ladies.

Captain Faraday — SteamWorld Heist

Piper Faraday from SteamWorld Heist.
Piper wears the best hat of them all.

Half turn-based-strategy game and half squinting-at-the-screen-and-praying-you-don’t-aim-wrong, SteamWorld Heist mixes its strategy FPS-like mechanics with colorful personalities, retro-inspired backdrops, and classy music. The leader of a band of space pirates, Captain Piper Faraday, battles Scrappers to survive after the destruction of Earth. She’s accustomed to wielding scoped guns and is one of the slickest wall-bouncing shooters.

Piper’s witty and resourceful. She won’t hesitate to board your ship and serve justice with a well-aimed shot. Piper recruits a plethora of ragtag heroes, like Sea Brass and Sally Bolt, who all offer up their own abilities and weapon specialties. They follow her because of her charisma, leadership abilities, and, of course, the hats she’s scavenged from fallen enemies. Hats off to you, Piper.

Jill Stingray — VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action

Kira Miki comforts Jill.
Sometimes, we just need someone who’s willing to listen.

The minimal gameplay visual novel, VA-11 HALL-A showcases a relatable story of love, regret, and self-growth over a great soundtrack. Glitch City is loaded with corruption, and VA-11 HALL-A is one of its only safe havens. Yet, despite the circumstances, Julianne Natalie Stingray isn’t an action hero.

As a bartender in a shady corner of this futuristic cyberpunk universe, Jill listens to the stories of eccentric citizens, such as a Hatsune Miku-inspired pop idol and the most rad Shiba Inu. She’s the furthest removed from the action, but the player learns about the world and its dynamics through these conversations.

Patrons usually see Jill as a typical bartender: cool, calm, and collected. However, between Glitch City’s growing violence and her past regrets, Jill eventually has to drop her emotional defenses and face her decision to walk out on her then-girlfriend. As she serves drinks to both friends and strangers alike, Jill reminds us that we’re never too late to right wrongs and make a difference in someone’s life.

Hat Kid — A Hat in Time

Hat Kid from A Hat in Time.
She’s the hero we never knew we needed.

Pulling together the best parts of Crash Bandicoot, Super Mario 64, and Banjo-Kazooie, A Hat in Time weaves a fun tale about a talented and adventurous alien girl. As a skilled weaver and explorer, Hat Kid travels all over the galaxy in search of her missing Time Pieces. She crafts a variety of awesome hats that grant abilities like turning into an ice statue or creating explosive potions. Hat Kid also uses her spectacular jumping skills to headbutt her foes or simply smack away at the baddies when wielding her trusty umbrella.

With such great power comes great responsibility — and a heroic adventure Hat Kid doesn’t think is necessary. This pits her against Mustache Girl, who decides Hat Kid is wasting her potential to end all evil. Her search to fix her spaceship culminates in one of the craziest boss battles, where all the “bad guys” come together and help Hat Kid teach the real villain of the game a vital lesson.

Red — Transistor

Red leaning against her motorcycle next to the Transistor.
“Hey Red. We’re not getting away with this, are we?”

A mute singer in the crumbling city of Cloudbank, Red battles against the Process and the Camerata to learn the truth behind the Transistor and maybe even save whatever’s left. We feel a sense of dread from the introduction, as Red retrieves a talking sword from a man’s lifeless body. Everything was taken away from her: her city, career, voice, and lover. The world is falling apart around her, but she chooses to keep moving forward.

Along the way, Red obtains the Traces of fallen citizens, harnessing their abilities through the Transistor and giving them a semblance of new life. This is the main aspect of Supergiant’s isometric strategy game: these Functions can be combined to fit the player’s style. Using Jaunt() recklessly or thinking deeply about your Turn() strategy are both valid options to any fight. Learning the nuances of Function combos prepares the player for the final boss. However, Transistor’s finale, coupled with the musical genius of Darren Korb and the passionate singing of Ashley Barret, will not fail to tear at your heartstrings.

Madeline — Celeste

Part of Madeline, Madeline, and Theo from Celeste.
“Your breathing keeps that feather floating.“

Madeline strives to overcome her mountain — literally. She isn’t punching enemies in the face, and she doesn’t wield an awesome blaster. Instead, Madeline uses sheer willpower and emotional fortitude to battle her personal demons. (And also literally hop up and around a mountain.)

Celeste’s platforming is not easy, and this pairs perfectly with its themes. Madeline’s journey illustrates the difficulties of people who face depression, anxiety, and other mental health battles. Madeline faces a part of herself that discourages her journey by insulting her, making her second-guess herself. Experiencing her exciting ups and painful falls makes the final stretch of the game that much sweeter — a moment of triumph, boiled down into joyous tears when we realize she’s reached the summit.

Besides, who could resist having a snack with all the friends we made along the way?

Who Knew? Fermented Ingredients Also Do Amazing Things for Your Skin Care

Fermented skin care is having a moment, though the concept has been a staple in K-beauty routines for centuries. Our skin loves natural food sources. Fermented skin care, much like fermented foods, means that microorganisms (bacteria) have been added, which release enzymes that break down the ingredients, yielding products that our skin (and tummies) love. Just like wine, beer, kimchi, sauerkraut and yogurt are fermented into foods that promote healthy gut bacteria, ingredients like yeast, milk, fruit and plants are fermented into skin care products with so many added benefits.

Fermentation causes a substance to undergo three major changes — 1) it becomes easier for the skin to absorb, 2) it removes irritating substances and 3) it becomes more nutrient-dense. Basically, the bacteria breaks down the substance into smaller particles (for easier absorption), it neutralizes irritants (like pesticides) so the end product is gentle enough for sensitive skin and the process produces antioxidants, peptides and amino acids not found in the raw material, so it becomes a topical nutrient powerhouse. Typically, the fermentation of skin care ingredients is much shorter than that of foods because it will eventually cause the ingredients to break down and be less effective. Fermentation also helps to prolong a product’s shelf life — no need to add synthetic preservatives as it’s full of anti-microbial organisms.

If you’re looking to hydrate, plump and minimize lines and wrinkles, consider adding a fermented skin care product to your regimen. Popular fermented ingredients include: berries, seaweed, tea and yeast (to name a few). These natural wonders can strengthen your skin barrier and give you stunning results. Here are a few of our favorite fermented products to try now.

Amazing international honeymoon destinations

So, they’ve popped the question, you’ve said yes (eeek!) and you’re getting ready to plan for your big day! Pretty exciting, right? Planning a wedding is one of the most incredible experiences you’ll ever get to enjoy, but we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t stressful. There are deadlines to meet, budgets to keep, and a whole heap of guests to entertain. Eventually, the whole thing can get on top of you. Luckily, the big day itself will be one of the most memorable days of your life, and you can top the whole thing off with a beautiful honeymoon that will allow you to relax and unwind with your new husband or wife. But where do you go? Well, you just have to go international…

Paris, France

In the words of Audrey Hepburn, “Paris is always a good idea!” This is especially true when it comes to your honeymoon, because Paris is all about the luuuuurve. With romantic walks along the Seine, trips up the Eiffel Tower, and food that will truly get your taste buds tingling, more and more couples are choosing to ditch the beach and opt for a city break honeymoon instead. If this is what you’re into, Paris should be at the top of your list. You just need to Google pictures of the city to understand why…

Fiji Islands

If you’ve found yourself getting increasingly stressed about your wedding day, you probably want to just chill out and enjoy your time with your new husband or wife during your honeymoon. You want to just sit back, relax, and enjoy what nature has to offer. If this sounds right up your street, why not fly to the Fiji Islands for your honeymoon? With ridiculously beautiful beaches that are full of golden sands and crystal clear water, these islands are a tropical paradise. If money is not an issue, you should definitely check out luxury villas that sit above the sea. They are truly a sight to behold.

Kenya, Africa

Your honeymoon should be one of the most memorable experiences of your life, which means you need to go to a memorable destination. If you’re struggling to find the right one for you, you might want to consider Kenya. As one of the coolest destinations on this planet, you could spend your honeymoon going on safari and walking with the elephants. Make sure you get some binoculars to ensure you can see the lions and tigers and giraffes, but also make sure you take your sense of adventure.

Dubai, UAE

If you’re looking to spend your first days of being a married couple in the life of luxury, we have a feeling that Dubai may be the place for you. Known to be the playground for the rich and famous, this oil-haven is laden with some of the most expensive hotels in the world, as well as some of the greatest food and attractions. You could spend your days just lazing on the beach, exploring the designer stores, or you could even grab a dune buggy and roll up and down the desert. The opportunities are endless!

Bali, Indonesia

Bali is becoming an increasingly popular destination among newlyweds, because it offers everything you could possibly want for the honeymoon of a lifetime. There are beaches to make use of, there are jungles to explore, there are temples to traverse, and their are luxury lodges to stay in. While Indonesia may be a long flight away for some of you, it will definitely be worth it. After all, you’ve gotta go international.

Are you still looking for the perfect honeymoon? Well, instead of choosing a destination that is close to home, why not look a little further afield?

5 Amazing Pieces From Serena Williams’ New Clothing Line

Serena Williams Clothing Line 'Serena'

Source: Michael Simon / StarTraksPhoto.com

Serena Williams is truly the goat. Her baby isn’t even walking yet and the ultra-athlete has returned to tennis and is dominating the French Open while still managing to find time to launch her clothing line, Serena.

The 13-piece collection features everything from work to weekend, all with an athletic flair. The line has American classics with Williams’ touch: including denim, athleisure, and even a “motivational” section.

The “S” featuring two tennis balls and logo’ing her brand stands not only for Serena but also around the concept of an “s” word. The 23 Grand slam title holder states, “Everyone can have an ‘s’ word. Mine is ‘sure.’ My mom’s is steadfast.’ A really good friend of mine who has been through a lot, her ‘s’ is ‘survivor.’”

Williams’ was eager to use her experience gained from two years of fashion school at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. The line has been in the works for the past two years, admitting, “in between there I got pregnant and had a baby, which took a little time, and then I got married, which I needed to spend time on that.”

She’s back with a force, giving us some 80’s vibes. She discusses her suit jacket with padded shoulders and states, “I love a shoulder pad. I put an extra one in mine to get a real structured, Balmain look.” She also complains about how much stretch is in jeans,”I feel like everywhere I go it’s just ‘stretch stretch.’

What happened to the amazing Levi’s? I wanted to bring that back.” With this being said, expect her jeans to have very little stretch. On the fit, she reasons, “I can fit in them. It’s enough [stretch] to get on and it fits very well. It brings the integrity of the jean back, and I feel that’s missing right now in all the jean collections.”

The inaugural collection ranges from $ 40.00 for a logo t-shirt or high waist briefs to $ 215.00 for a gold and black anorak jacket. On the more pricey side, for the consumer that simply wants to support Serena, there’s an “S” logo pin for $ 14.99. The line goes up to XL in only some pieces, which I’m sure is dissapointing to her plus-size fans.

There will be a series of capsule collection drops throughout the Summer and Fall, with over 75 styles ranging from $ 35.00 to $ 250.00.

The collection drops today and here are the top 5 pieces that are in our checkout cart.

‘Deadpool 2’ Easter Eggs and Surprises UPDATED With Amazing A-List Cameo

SPOILER ALERT: Warning, this article contains references and cameos in Deadpool 2. Proceed at your own risk.

UPDATE: Rhett Reese — the co-writer of Deadpool 2 — has revealed there’s a very famous face, hiding in plain site during the movie. When Cable first travels back in time, he meets a couple of hillbillys, one of whom is played by Alan Tudyk, as described below. But the identity of the other actor remained a mystery. Though he’s listed as Dickie Greenleaf in the credits, which should have been a clue. As the actor in question is Matt Damon, with Greanleaf the name of the character he played in The Talented Mr. Ripley.

“He’s not hidden like Waldo for just an instant; he gets some good screen time” Reese told Yahoo. “We’ve sneaked him past everybody. Literally thousands of people have seen the movie so far, and no one’s noticed.”

Director David Leitch added “Bill Corse, our make-up artist, had three hours with him to put him in deep prosthetics and give him that beer belly. We didn’t tell any of the crew. There were a few people who sniffed it out. But you work on enough movies, you got to keep these things tight.”

Comic Book Stuff

In the opening sequence, Deadpool plays with a musical toy that commemorates Wolverine‘s death at the end of Logan, complete with figurine impaled by a branch. Wade states that for his film to compete, he’ll have to die too.

The character that Julian Dennison plays — who kind of turns into the film’s antagonist — is Russell “Rusty” Collins AKA Firefist. Created by Bob Layton and Jackson Guice, the mutant first appeared in X-Factor #1 in 1986. Rusty can “pyromorph,” which means he can generate and project flames from his fists.

Zazie Beetz as Domino.

Zazie Beetz — of Atlanta fame — plays mutant Domino in the movie, who can control probability. Which basically means she’s very lucky. The character first appeared in X-Force #8 in 1992, so it’s fitting that she helps form the X-Force with a few of the below characters here. In the comics, she sports a black tattoo on her white skin. In the movie, she has the reverse discoloration, which appears to be the result of vitiligo.

Shioli Kutsuna plays Yukio, Negasonic Teenage Warhead‘s girlfriend. She doesn’t seem to be the same Yukio who was played by Rila Fukushima in The Wolverine. Instead, the Japanese mutant is a lot more like Surge, who first appeared in New Mutants #8 in 2004, and can also generate and manipulate electricity.

Cable’s Height

Weasel points out that Cable‘s height in the comics is different to his height in Deadpool 2. Cable is nearly 7-feet in the comics; actor Josh Brolin is 5’10” in real life.

Juggernaut makes his second celluloid appearance in Deadpool 2. He first popped up in X-Men: The Last Stand, played by footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones. Here the super-strong and virtually unstoppable mutant is a fully CG character. Firefist also asks why Juggernaut wears a helmet. He answers so that his brother can’t read his mind, a reference to Professor Xavier. But more on him later…

Lewis Tan as Shatterstar.

Lewis Tan plays Shatterstar in the movie, a superhero who first appeared in New Mutants #99 in 1991. On the page, Shatterstar can create shockwaves and teleport using his twin swords. In the movie, he mentions he’s from Mojoworld, an alien planet in the comics where they are obsessed with television.

Terry Crews briefly appears as Bedlam, a comic book character who first appeared in Factor X #1 in 1995. He can disrupt electrical fields, including bio-electricity, effectively scrambling brain functions.

Zeitgiest chundering in the comics.

Pennywise himself — Bill Skarsgard — pops ups as Zeitgeist, who debuted in X-Force #16. His ability to spit acidic breath means he has to wear a mouthguard.

That would be none-other-than Brad Pitt making a cameo as Vanisher. He’s initially invisible in the movie, so no gorgeous Brad Pitt face. But when he dies horribly via electrocution, Brad’s beauty briefly fills the screen. Fun fact: Pitt very nearly played Cable in Deadpool 2, but scheduling issues meant he was reduced to this cameo.

Hope Summers

Comic book Hope.

Towards the end of the movie, Cable reveals that his daughter is called Hope. That means she’s Hope Summers, the daughter he adopted in the comics, aka the Mutant Messiah. Hope first appeared in X-Men #205 in 2007, and was the first mutant born after Scarlet Witch turned pretty much every other mutant into a regular human.

Black Tom Cassidy

In the Ice Box — a prison that’s also taken directly from the comics — Deadpool faces off with the very white mutant “Black Tom Cassidy,” whom he calls out for “cultural appropriation.” Black Tom Cassidy first appeared in X-Men #99 in 1976. He’s a longtime collaborator of Juggernaut’s, who is also imprisoned.

Early in proceedings, Wade Wilson tells Vanessa that he was doing battle with a caped vigilante until he found out his mum was called Martha too. This is a reference to the mad moment that Batman and Superman stop fighting in Dawn of Justice. They also crib an iconic line from the start of Tim Burton’s Batman, when Cable asks “Who are you?” to which Deadpool responds “I’m Batman.”

DC Universe

The recent DC movies are a little heavy, and Deadpool calls this out, saying to Cable, “You’re so dark, are you sure you’re not from the DC Universe?”

Irene Merryweather

Irene Merryweather is a TV reporter in the movie. In the comics, she’s a reporter-turned-ally of Cable, who also goes by the name Chronicler.

Mister Sinister

Mister Sinister in the comics.

In Deadpool 2, bad stuff is happening at the Essex House for Mutant Rehabilitation. Which is very probably a sly reference to Nathanial Essex, the supervillain better known as Mister Sinister. Who first appeared in Uncanny X-Men and became a longtime nemesis for the X-heroes. Sinister is particularly interested in the Summers bloodline.

Stan Lee

Marvel legend Stan Lee cameos, but not in physical form. Rather he appears in a mural on a wall soon after the X-Force sequence.

Alpha Flight

Alpha Flight.

There’s an Alpha Flight airlines advert on the top of Dopinder‘s taxi. In the comics, Alpha Flight is a Canadian superhero team who premiered in Uncanny X-Men #120 in 1979. Ryan Reynolds is Canadian, and there are numerous jokes about his native country in the film.

Deadpool visits the X-Mansion, rides around in Professor X’s wheelchair, and claims that Cerebro smells like X-Men actor Patrick Stewart. Then — in an all-star cameo — he briefly spies the likes of the Professor (here played by James McAvoy), Cyclops and Quicksilver before Beast shuts the door on him, continuing a joke from the first film that they are all avoiding him.

Winter Soldier

Cable has a bionic arm that’s a bit like Winter Soldier‘s. Deadpool can’t resist making reference to that fact, asking, “What did I do to piss off a grumpy old f–ker with a Winter Soldier arm?”

Black Widow

Deadpool calls Domino “Black Black Widow” which is a reference to… well, we reckon you know that one.

Black Panther

Deadpool calls Dopinder “Brown Panther,” A reference to… you know that one as well.

Black Widow calming Hulk.

Deadpool tries to calm Juggernaut down with the same line the Avengers use to calm Hulk: “Sun’s going down real low.”

Deadpool disses the least exciting movie Avenger by saying, “Give me a bow and arrow, I’m basically Hawkeye.”

Rob Liefeld

Legend has it that Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld won’t draw feet. Either because he doesn’t like to or can’t. Either way, it gets referenced in the movie, with Deadpool telling Domino she looks like she’s been created by “a guy who can’t draw feet.”

Josh Brolin as Thanos.

Deadpool orders Cable to “Zip it, Thanos!” Cable and Thanos are played by the same actor, Josh Brolin.

Gerry Duggan

An armoured convoy drives down Gerry Duggan Parkway in the movie. Gerry Duggan has recently been writing a run of Deadpool comics, and even inserted himself as a character in Despicable Deadpool #300.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

A scene in which Deadpool tries — and fails — to slice bullets with his katanas mocks a similar scene in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While the post-credit sting features Wade inserting himself into the movie, and killing that much-maligned version of his character.

Green Lantern

The same post-credit sting ends with Wade visiting Ryan Reynolds when he’s holding the Green Lantern script, and killing him before he gets a chance to make the also much-maligned movie.

Movie/Music/TV Stuff

James Bond

The movie opens with a title sequence that mimics those that kick off the Bond movies. As they are normally underscored by a big ballad by a big-name singer with a big voice, Deadpool 2 features a song by Celine Dion.

John Wick

The film is directed by David Leitch, who co-directed John Wick. The credits therefore feature the line “Directed by one of the guys who killed the dog in John Wick.”

Interview with the Vampire

Kirsten Dunst in ‘Interview with the Vampire.’

The Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt horror movie Interview with the Vampire is referenced regularly throughout Deadpool 2. Star Kirsten Dunst gets mentioned, and jokingly called Kristen. While Dopinder quotes her character (“I want some more”) and the shot of Hope and her mother’s charred bodies is exactly the same way Dunst’s character died in Interview.

Bambi, The Lion King, Saw 7

Wade Wilson says Deadpool 2 is a family film in that it kicks off with death, like these three very different films.

The Passion of the Christ

Wade name-checks Passion of the Christ as the biggest R-rated movie at the U.S. box office, but adds that Deadpool‘s international success makes it the biggest R-rated movie worldwide.

Alan Tudyk

Alan Tudyk (l) in Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

The star of Firefly and Rogue One cameos as a hillbilly that Cable encounters when he first travels back in time, discussing the merits of toilet paper versus wet wipes with his hillbilly pal. Which seems like it might be a nod to brilliant Tudyk flick Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Wade dubs Negasonic Teenage Warhead “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” after the popular comic book/TV character.

The Goonies

Josh Brolin in ‘The Goonies.’

Deadpool calls Cable “One-Eyed Willy” because he has one normal eye, and one bionic eye. Which is a reference to The Goonies villain One-Eyed Willy. A movie that featured Cable actor Josh Brolin.

Adventure Time

Wade Wilson is likely to be an Adventure Time fan, as he wears an Adventure Time watch in Deadpool 2.

The Terminator

Deadpool shouts “Hands off the kid, John Connor,” which is a reference to the Terminator films, and also a way of acknowledging similarities between their storylines, which involve traveling back in time to stop something terrible happening in the future. Also, Cable looks a bit like a cross between Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator and Jason Clarke’s John Connor.

Colossus warns Russell to “Come quietly or there will be trouble,” before promptly getting called out for stealing the line from RoboCop.

Wade and Vanessa watch Barbra Streisand’s Yentl after making love, when Wade notices that “Papa Can You Hear Me?” sounds a lot like “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” from Frozen. The Disney lyrics also end up being Deadpool’s dying words. Fun fact: Streisand is Josh Brolin’s stepmother.

Harry Potter

The Harry Potter Sorting Hat.

Deadpool references Harry Potter by asking if there will be a “Sorting Hat” to put him in the right gang.

The Time Traveller’s Wife

Deadpool calls Cable “The Time Traveller’s Wife’s Husband,” a reference to 2003 novel The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Which was turned into a 2009 movie that starred Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.

Bea Arthur

Deadpool is a big Bea Arthur fan.

Deadpool’s swords are named “Bea” and “Arthur,” a reference to the star of The Golden Girls and Star Wars Holiday Special. Wade Wilson is clearly a big fan, as he wore a Bea Arthur t-shirt in the first flick.

Cool Runnings

Wade Wilson talks about hitting rock bottom in his movie, and comparing it to when the sledge breaks in Jamaican bobsleigh comedy Cool Runnings.

The Human Centipede

The bad guy from Human Centipede.

Deadpool then claims that the actors in The Human Centipede hit their low-point when they signed up to appear in the movie. Harsh, but fair.

Basic Instinct

When he has the legs of a child, Wade Wilson uncrosses them and crosses them in a suggestive fashion, similar to Sharon Stone’s character Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct.

Say Anything

When Deadpool returns to the X-Mansion, and holds up a tiny boombox playing “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel to coax Colossus down. In Say Anything, John Cusack’s character holds up a slightly larger boombox playing the same song to show ex-girlfriend — played by Ione Sky — that he still cares.

Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back

Early in proceedings, when discussing kids, Wade says that all sons are destined to turn out like their fathers, as in Star Wars. Then adds they will also accidentally have sex with their sisters, mis-remembering Star Wars. Later, when Vanessa tells Deadpool she loves him, DP responds with ,”I know.” And we all know what scene that comes from.

The Proposition

Wade Wilson says The Proposition features “a wonderful Guy Pearce performance.” The Proposition is a Guy Pearce western from 2005.

Mario Lopez

Deadpool taking out Lopez.

Deadpool uses the phrase “Mario Nopez,” a reference to the former Saved by the Bell star turned entertainment host, whom Deadpool fought while promoting his first standalone movie.

George Michael

Wade Wilson’s love for George Michael is referenced when he uses the “Careless Whisper” lyrics while lamenting his lost love to Weasel. Wilson reveals that he’s sad that Michael is dead, but happy we still have David Bowie. Weasel quickly changes the subject.

The Karate Kid

Deadpool shouts “Sweep the leg, Johnny,” a truly villainous line taken from the final fight in the original Karate Kid.

After Wade Wilson’s death, he starts to cross to the other side to meet Vanessa, as an acoustic version of A-ha‘s “Take on Me” plays. And the scene looks just like the video for that song, wherein a human girl crosses over into the comic book world.

Stranger Things

At the start of the post-credit sting, Wade calls Negasonic Teenage Warhead “Eleven” — a reference to the character played by Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things.

My 5 goals for an amazing summer with my kids

Charlie Brooks

posted in Parenting

I usually feel like I don’t spend enough time with my family, and that feeling gets worse in the summer. I definitely don’t want to be the dad who works through every vacation. But, alas, I’m a bit of a workaholic. I not only have my normal full-time career, but also two part-time jobs.

So I’ve made a few summer resolutions I’m hoping might help make sure the season goes down as an enjoyable one instead of one that I wasted working, again.

Stop being such a jerk. True, I should avoid being a jerk anyway. But I really like teasing my kids. What works well as a bit of joking around at the bus stop, though, gets old on long summer days. Might as well save all my A material for when school starts up again.

Take time to educate. Determined to avoid an academic summer slide with our son, my wife had the great idea to ramp up the amount of reading we did last summer. It worked very well. Reading and learning games are a great way to increase the overall quality of family time.

Budget family time. I’m really good at budgeting my work time. I can extend that to my family time without overextending myself. Basically, this means setting aside a block of time each day where family is my job. No fiddling around on my phone, no napping on the couch – it’s time to play.

Take advantage of later bedtimes. When school’s not in session, I’m usually out of the house before the kids get out of bed. It’s possible to offset that loss of morning time by loosening up bedtimes a bit. If the day gets half an hour longer because I’m having more fun with the kids, that’s time well spent.

Summer Time

Remember the adults, too. I want to try to boost the quality of time with the kids, but there are also adults in the house I want to spend time with. Extra time with the kids becomes less meaningful if I ignore my wife every night. Moreover, I also need to preserve my own sanity. Some nights, I might just have to accept that I missed out on a fun summer day so I can be a good husband and a sane human being.

That last bit becomes extra important because my wife is going through surgery at the beginning of the summer and will thus be unable to move for a good chunk of the vacation. So somehow I have to find time to fit lots of fun into this summer while also being a good caretaker.

All of this rambling might make it seem like I’m turning a fun summer vacation into a pile of stress, but that’s how I seem to function. I’m a workaholic, and I even take my fun seriously. Hopefully I won’t take it too seriously and my whole family can have a great summer.

How do you get the most out of your summertimes?

Don’t Let NCAA Hypocrisy Ruin This Amazing March Madness

Quick, and be honest now: When you filled out your March Madness bracket a few weeks back, along with millions of your fellow Americans, did you actually pick 16th-seeded University of Maryland, Baltimore County to upset the University of Virginia, the top team in the entire NCAA men’s basketball tournament? Or Loyola University Chicago to knock off a string of bigger-name and better-funded programs on its way to the Final Four, which tips off on March 31 in San Antonio? And you certainly didn’t put any money on a 98-year-old nun emerging as the biggest celebrity of all, right?

No, of course you didn’t. No one saw UMBC’s win coming–the first time a top seed has lost in the first round–nor were we prepared for the joy that is Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, Loyola-Chicago’s team chaplain, who has inspired her underdog charges while throwing shade at brash college hoops analyst Charles Barkley in a national television interview.

This is a March Madness for the ages–which only makes the hypocrisy surrounding the tournament all the more troubling.

In 2016–17, revenue for the NCAA, the nonprofit organization that oversees major college sports, exceeded $ 1 billion for the first time. Broadcast rights to the men’s basketball tournament alone delivered $ 761 million of that haul. The NCAA goes out of its way to protect the financial interests of its tournament sponsors. All members of the media sitting courtside at games, for example, are required to pour their drinks into Powerade cups, since parent company Coca-Cola is an NCAA “corporate champion.”

Meanwhile, the NCAA takes extraordinary measures to impede the financial interests of the tournament’s main attraction: the players. The organization’s amateurism rules prohibit student-athletes from earning any money above a stipend that covers the cost of living at school. Yes, players receive athletic scholarships that cover hefty tuition bills. That’s a valuable prize. But the vast majority of the kids lighting up your TV screen were recruited to their school to play basketball, not study chemistry. And don’t think they don’t know it.

While players are governed by draconian rules, coaches can enjoy the fruits of the free market. The University of Connecticut, for example, just lured coach Danny Hurley with a six-year contract worth roughly $ 3 million a year. Coaches are also free to profit from their celebrity by giving paid speeches, hawking branded products or selling instructional videos.

This disparity is all the more unseemly since the FBI has started nosing around college basketball’s shady underbelly. The ongoing federal probe has led to the arrests of assistant coaches and corporate-marketing representatives who allegedly arranged under-the-table deals to steer promising players to certain schools or tie them to financial advisers after turning pro. The scandal led the University of Louisville to fire Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino after $ 100,000 was allegedly funneled to the family of a top prospect in exchange for his commitment to the school. Pitino has denied knowing about such a payment.

This black market is a direct result of the NCAA’s outdated restrictions. If a school thinks a player is worth six figures, then that player should have a right to maximize his earning power. Even if the NCAA refuses to allow players a fairer share of its $ 1 billion pie, the organization could permit them to earn money through sponsorships with shoe companies or local car dealerships.

So does this mean we are all a bunch of March Madness–loving, binge-viewing-at-work hypocrites? Without a doubt. But decrying the injustice of big-time basketball’s amateurism rules doesn’t mean you have to stop fueling the college sports economy. March Madness is the greatest guilty pleasure in sports. After all, the NCAA knows what it’s got: there’s a reason TV rights to the tournament will increase to about $ 879 million in 2019, a 16% jump over two years. So please forgive us, Sister Jean, while we root on for Cinderella.

This appears in the April 09, 2018 issue of TIME.

The amazing island that costs $7.5 Million

If you’re reading this article in an office (get back to work, silly) or just perusing the internet while avoiding doing the laundry, there’s a fair chance that you, like us, absolutely hate people. Yep, people suck, and the outside world is just way too peopley for us (*shivers*). However, there’s only so much time you can spend away from people before realizing that you have to pass your neighbor’s porch on the way to your car or pass a colleague on the way to the washroom. You’re probably thinking, ‘Oh, what I would do to live on an 86-acre private island off the coast of Maine, with my own church, boathouse, stables and personal tavern!’ Well, it’s funny you should say that…

Hope Island

If you’ve ever wanted to live on your own private island and avoid people altogether (AKA the dream), you better start counting your change, because one recently went on the market, and is looking for a new owner to look after it. Located just a 25-minute boat ride away from Portland, Maine, Hope Island consists of 86-acres of pure beauty. You can truly live it large on this picturesque island…if you have a spare $ 7.5 million in the bank. Psssht, we wish.

A little bit of history

So where did it all start with Hope Island? Well, a property developer by the name of John Cacoulidis decided to buy the island in 1993 for an incredible $ 1.3 million and has since transformed what was once a barren landscape into something out of James Bond. Boasting an 11,000 square-foot mansion, jagged coastline, beautiful beaches, a fixed pier plus boat moorings, helicopter pad, colorful woodland, roadways, and numerous outhouses, this island really has it all. However, the icing on the cake is that Hope Island has its own personal tavern. Yep, that really does mean you’ll have beer on tap…IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD.

A few added extras

As if the private tavern wasn’t enough to make you sell your own liver, Hope Island also offers a few added extras. Mainly, it’s not the only island included in the (hefty) price tag. Yuh-huh, Hope Island also features three ‘picnic’ islands, which you can use to your heart’s content. You might even want to build a swimming pool on one of these little islands, as weirdly, that is the only thing Hope Island is missing.

Why is it up for sale?

You might be wondering why John Cacoulidis would want to sell his beloved island, but it seems the answer is pretty heartbreaking. John was not alone when he transformed Hope Island into an impressive sanctuary. He was also helped by his wonderful wife, Phyllis. Unfortunately, Phyllis passed away in 2016, which meant John spent less and less time on the island by himself. He now wants to pass the island on to someone else. Could it be you?

We all dream of one day owning our own island, but with Hope Island, it seems this dream could actually become a reality…

The amazing story of Green Bank, West Virginia

Can you imagine having to spend time without your phone or internet? Seems unthinkable, right? We rely so much on technology these days that it seems unlikely we could get through a day without using technology of some description. Whether we are sending an email on our phones, updating our Facebook status on the laptop, or watching Netflix on the iPad, tech is a big part of our lives.

And what’s the one thing that unites all these? Yes, they are all technology, and we all rely on them. But, the main thing that links them all together is Wi-Fi – there is no way to use any of these items properly without an internet connection. So, imagine for a moment you didn’t have any wireless. Now you know what the citizens of Green Bank, West Virginia face on a daily basis! Allow us to expand:

Green Bank, West Virginia

The name probably evokes that small town feeling for you, it certainly does for us – and you’d be bang on the money. The population of Green Bank is a tiny 143, and, judging by what goes down here, we aren’t in the least bit surprised. You see, Green Bank is actually one of the only towns in the world where wireless signals of any kind are actually illegal! Let’s break that down for you – that means no WiFi for your cell phones. No Bluetooth. No electronic transmitters. Basically, the tech-savvy teen’s worst nightmare in every sense of the word.

So what’s the deal?

Okay, so why on Earth would any place in the Western world make it illegal to have wireless signals? Surely that would result in people being cut off from the world? Well, yeah – probably accounts for the tiny population. But, the reason behind this is not to frustrate and annoy, but rather a reason that is linked to science. See, the town cannot have wireless signals moving about, as a result of the Green Bank Telescope. The GBT is the largest steerable radio telescope on the planet, and one of the most important scientific links to the universe.

The telescope

Scientists use the telescope to find out fascinating things about the universe and the Solar System. In fact, they listen to radio energy that has come on a journey of many light years, giving crucial information about how stars and galaxies are created. Any rogue signals in the area could disrupt these radio waves, and ruin years of research, not to mention stopping us from finding out important information about the world and how the universe works.

There is one way

Okay, so you’re probably crossing Green Bank off your list of places to go, right? Not so fast. Before you do that you need to know that there is one way of getting wireless signal and being able to update your social media while you’re here. Head for the Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort, where they have managed to get radio waves to a low enough frequency that they won’t disrupt the telescope. This was incredibly difficult and took a long time to achieve, but achieve it they did!

So, if you ever want to head to the town where wireless signals are illegal, you’ll know to head for Green Bank, West Virginia. There are so many reasons to not go, but, wouldn’t you love to head to a place this unique, if only for a while. How many people can say they have been to a town like this? Furthermore, you might get to check out the telescope as well!

The amazing Salar De Uyuni in Bolivia

Everyone has a bucket list, and there are probably some truly breathtaking things on that bucket list. The world is such an amazing place, full of lots of beauty and majesty, and it’s important to try to experience as much of it as you can. This might mean jetting off to some faraway land, and mixing with cultures you’re not familiar with, but that’s a great way to evolve as a person.

One of the things we absolutely insist you get on your bucket list is the stunning Salar De Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia. These are staggeringly beautiful, and perhaps the most remarkable vistas in the world. A salt flat is an expanse of ground that is covered in salt and other minerals that make incredible patterns and visual wonders on the ground. So, here is what you need to know if you want to visit Salar De Uyuni.

When you should go

Any time of the year, right? Well, no. There are two distinct seasons that apply when you want to go see the salt flats. There is the rainy season (December to April) and the dry season (May to November). However, you want to avoid December and January because it often gets too wet which can result in tours being canceled. The dry season might be preferable as you’ll be able to access places that aren’t so accessible in the rainy season.

How to get there

You also need to know how to get there when you decide to pay a visit. Now, the chances are you’re going to be going on a guided tour, in which case there will be transport. There are three different places from which the tours go, two in Bolivia (in Uyuni and Tupiza) and another from Chile. Where you go from will largely depend on where you are staying, and you will have to decide whether to book tickets in advance or buy them when you arrive.

Choosing the right tour

There are several tours you might choose to take when you go visit these stunning salt flats. And, the good news is that there are packages to suit your preferences. For those in it for the long haul, you could take a 3-day tour of the Altiplano region, that includes the salt flats, but also other stunning things like volcanoes, geysers, and deserts. Alternatively, you might like to do a one-day tour where you just go see Salar De Uyuni, which will cost lest. There are shared tours to consider as well, where you will be part of a group.

This is one of those unique experiences that you may never get the chance to have again, so you need to make the most of it. The Bolivian salt flats are simply stunning, and they need to be discovered to be believed. If you want to get the full experience you need to plan ahead and choose what sort of time of the year you want to go. Picking the right tour is also really important, and will help enhance your experience while you’re there.

Unravel the amazing Bhutan

The Kingdom of Bhutan is a country in southeast Asia, known for being a Buddhist country, and resting on the edge of the Himalayas. When you look at Asia as a continent to travel to, Bhutan might not be your first choice. In fact, it may not have made your list at all in the past, but it’s time to change that now! This is one of the best vacation destinations you’ve never been to, and you don’t know what you’re missing out on.

This tiny country is often overlooked because of the fact that it’s nestled between some of Asia’s biggest names, such as China and Nepal. But, if you give Bhutan the time, we guarantee you will have an unforgettable experience, and enjoy a unique side of Asia. Bhutan opened its borders to tourism in 2001, but still maintains much of its unique history and religious culture – and as such, the volume of tourism is generally lower. Join us as we unravel and explore the amazing Bhutan, and come up with some great cultural experiences you can have here.

Tiger’s Nest Monastery

One of the defining iconic emblems of Bhutan is the stunning Tiger’s Nest Monastery, located high up in the mountains just outside of Paro. This is a stunning feat of architecture, and one of the most religiously iconic and significant buildings in the country. It’s built into a series of caves and can be reached via either hiking or horseback riding. Depending on the weather, you might like to take a hike, assuming you have the right gear of course. This is a must-visit attraction in Bhutan and gives you a great feel for what the country is like.

Check out some Dzongs

Dzong architecture is a specific type of fortress, designed specifically to house and protect. There is a special emphasis on high exterior walls, protecting a complex interior of courtyards, temples, and sleeping quarters. Dzongs are generally used by monks for living, studying, and working, and they look stunning. The architecture is impressive, and they often straddle rivers or jut from the side of mountains. Whenever you see a Buddhist monk temple in the movies, this is the kind of thing you’re seeing. There are loads of Dzongs all over Bhutan, and they are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country.

Like most Buddhist countries, Bhutan has a big festival culture, and there are plenty of opportunities to join in the festivities. Dancing, vibrant colors, and dressing up make these festivals an obvious highlight. They are known as tshechu and are a real treat if you ever get to experience one. Monks will be doing most of the performing, so it’s a great occasion to see them. The big towns have hugely popular festivals, but, you could well walk into the mountains to the smaller villages if you want a smaller affair.

Live like the locals

This is something we always recommend when going abroad somewhere. It’s important to make sure you share the lifestyle and experiences of locals, even just for one day. This gives you a valuable and unique experience and shows you how people live here. If you have the opportunity, try to live on a farm for a day or so, spending the night as well. It’s a special experience, and you can get involved in some of the great Bhutanese customs, like taking a stone bath and preparing local food. Wonderful.

Bhutan is such a mysterious place because we all know so little about it. But, there are plenty of opportunities to check out this wonderful country and get some important Asian cultural experiences. If you’re looking for a vacation with a difference next year, we thoroughly recommend you check out Bhutan and spend some time here.

As someone who’s never been described as small-chested, I relate so hard to attempting to squish my girls into my pre-pregnancy bras for as long as possible. Naively, I refrained from investing in larger sizes because I assumed my breasts would go back to normal once I gave birth.

That last comic, yep. That was pretty much me, nearly choking to death on my super-sized, rock-hard breastfeeding boobs.

Of course, I also need a comic with a pair of deflated balloons to depict the post-weaning aftermath. Haha. (Sigh.)

What funny pregnancy or parenting moment of yours would you love to see given the comic treatment?

The amazing table mountain in South Africa

South Africa is a country of heart stopping beauty and elegance, and it also has a hugely important history. The country has changed and evolved significantly over the years, but, the natural beauty has always remained. Always been a constant. There is such a grand cultural legacy in the country, and so many areas of it we look at with awe and wonder. One of the most beautiful parts of South Africa is Table Mountain.

This truly staggering flat-topped mountain is considered one of the most iconic and stunning natural landmarks in South Africa. Overlooking the glorious city of Cape Town, Table Mountain attracts thousands of tourists every year and plays a big role in the cultural heritage of South Africa as a nation. So, let’s find out more about this iconic mountain, and the role it plays in South Africa’s heritage. Here are some awesome facts about Table Mountain that we reckon you never knew!

It’s ancient

You could probably infer from the fact that it’s a mountain that the majestic mound has been around for quite some time. What you probably didn’t know is just how long it’s been around for. Well, all in all, Table Mountain is thought to be more than 250 million years old, making it older than the Alps, the Andes, and the Himalayas! In fact, it is one of the oldest mountains in the world, and we feel this helps add to its sense of grandeur to it. We can’t wait to explore further and find out more about this ancient wonder.

Amazing wildlife

South Africa has no shortage of amazing nature and wildlife as it is, but Table Mountain, in particular, has some stunning examples. There is loads of beautiful flora and fauna here, and a lot of the wildlife only exists on the slopes of the great mountain. For instance, there is a species of frog native to these slopes called the Table Mountain Ghost Frog. This little guy can only be found on an 8 km square area on the southern slopes of the mountain, and nowhere else in the world.

It’s still growing

It might surprise you to learn that Table Mountain is actually still growing! No, you didn’t hear that wrong! Hundreds of millions of years ago the Earth was the supercontinent Pangea, with Africa at the center, and then the continents broke off and drifted away. During this time, the shifting tectonic plates caused land masses to split and fold, but, Table Mountain remained immune due to being made from granite. The force was thrust downward instead, and this resulted in the mountain slowly rising over the years, and this is still continuing. In a few hundreds of millions of years, who knows how big it could be!

Table Mountain is one of the most impressive and incredible sights in the world, and a place you absolutely have to see as soon as you can. The mountain is a huge part of the DNA of South Africa and brings in a lot of tourism for the country. These are a few of the cool things you might not have known about Table Mountain and what an amazing structure it actually is.

New ‘Happy!’ Trailer Is Demented, Amazing, and Very NSFW

Happy! might be the new show I’m most stoked about. Based on the graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson, Happy! tells the story of Nick Sax. Nick is an ex-cop turned hitman and he’s about as sleazy as you can get. After a botched attempt on his life, Nick is resuscitated and finds he can now see a tiny blue unicorn named Happy.

Happy is the imaginary friend of Hailey, a little girl who has been kidnapped by an evil Santa Claus for… well, let’s just say it’s ugly stuff. Happy wants to try and get Nick to save Hailey and maybe find a little redemption in the process.

It’s a grimy, gonzo, gory, and goofy story. And now, we have our best look at the series yet in the form of a new trailer.

Warning! This Trailer Is Pretty NSFW!

WOW. This looks nuts. The series director is Brian Taylor, one of the co-directors of Crank. I’ve sung Crank‘s praises before and this looks like a fun continuation of Taylor’s manic approach to filmmaking. If it’s even half as bonkers as Crank, then we’re in for a hoot. Plus, he just put out the Nicholas Cage horror-comedy Mom and Dad (read our review) and it looks like he might be on a roll.

The graphic novel is a self-contained story and it seems like the first season of Happy! intends to tell that entire tale. Exactly how the show intends to go beyond one season could be difficult, but I trust the talent involved. Grant Morrison is on board as executive producer and writer, and I’ve already thrown my hat in with Brian Taylor. but how about that cast? Christopher Meloni and Patton Oswalt as the leads? Sold.

I’ll be screening the first episode of Happy! later this week at New York Comic-Con. My hopes are very high. I’ll let you know what I think. And you can watch Happy! when it premieres on Syfy on December 6.

The amazing nature in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most popular and exciting countries in recent years, and it seems to be a hugely popular vacation spot these days. There is plenty to love about this Central American country, with its awesome climate and wonderful diversity. Costa Rica is a great place to go to if you want to make sure you have an unforgettable travel experience.

One of the best things about the country is the wonderful geography. Specifically, there is so much natural beauty and wonder here, and it has to be seen to be believed. If you’re wavering over whether or not you should commit to a trip to Costa Rica for your next vacation, make sure you finish this post, it will change your mind. Here are some amazing things about the natural world in Costa Rica, and how it has become so appealing.

Amazing national parks

Costa Rica has such stunning natural habitats that its national parks are actually famous all across the world. It has no less than four UNESCO World Heritage sites, no mean feat considering the size of the country. La Amistad National Park is one of these and was one of the first national parks to be shared with another country, in this case, Panama. Cocos Island National Park is another one of the excellent national parks on offer, and it boasts a great selection of exotic animals, some of which can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Make sure you see as many of these UNESCO sites as you possibly can.

World leader in conservation

For a country so small, Costa Rica does so much good when it comes to maintaining and conserving the natural world. The small nation contains 5% of the Earth’s biodiversity and is home to more than half a million species of mammals and marine life. The rest of the world could take a leaf out of Costa Rica’s book because they have 25% of their land under strict environmental protection laws. This has allowed tourism to flourish in Costa Rica and helped them keep their economy at a good level. It has also freed up money for other things. For instance, just last year, Costa Rica became the first country in the world to run for almost an entire year on nothing but renewable energy.

Hummingbird capital of the world

You may not be aware, but Costa Rica is actually the hummingbird capital of the world! The country is apparently home to 54 different species of hummingbird, around one sixth of the world’s population of theses amazing birds. And, one of these species is even an endangered species. These tiny birds are vibrant, colorful, and an incredible addition to the already impressive wildlife of Costa Rica.

More water than land

Costa Rica actually has more of a marine surface area than a land surface area! The country’s ocean territory is made up of lots of marine parks and plenty of nature reserves showcasing the incredible diversity they have beneath the ocean. There are all kinds of sea creatures here, like dolphins, sea turtles, and whales, and the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is an absolute must-visit for anyone traveling to Costa Rica.

Amazing routes for road tripping in Canada

If you’ve never been to Canada – well, what are you doing?! Book your tickets right now! Canada is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but with so much ground to cover it can be easy to miss some of the hidden gems. However, one of the best ways to see the real Canada is to embark on the ultimate Canadian road trip. Throughout this country, there are numerous incredible and amazing road tripping routes you can choose from. Check out some of the best:

The Icefields Parkway – Alberta

One of the most amazing aspects of Canada is that it is a country with so many different elements – there are forests, there are beaches, there are rainforests, there are big cities, there are mountains, and there are even glaciers! The Icefields Parkway road tripping route is the best way to see the slightly colder side to Canada, so remember to pack your wooly hat and scarf. The Icefields Parkway route will take you around three days to drive the 232 km route, but if you want to really take it in, it’ll take a little longer. Why not stretch it out to a week? Because you just have to stop off at various points through the Rocky Mountains, the Banff National Park and the Jasper National Park to check out the snow capped landscape, get a glimpse at the Glaciers and camp overnight to stargaze at one of the best stargazing viewpoints in the world.

Vancouver to Tofino – British Columbia

The Vancouver to Tofino road trip starts off a little differently to the rest, as you’ll need to board a ferry before you can go anywhere! Once you’ve made your way over to Vancouver Island, it’s super easy to travel the 207 km road from Nanaimo to Tofino. The route will take you past the MacMillan Provincial Park (which you definitely need to visit, their fir trees are legendary), and you’ll follow the Pacific Rim Highway. Once you get to Tofino, it would only be polite to stop off at Long Beach and ride their famous waves. Road trip and surfing? We’re spoiling you.

The Cabot Trail – Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is known for its breathtaking scenery, and The Cabot Trail shows off some its best assets – especially along the coast! This trail takes you 298 km around the top of the Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, which gives you immense views over the Atlantic Ocean as you wind your way along the coastal roads (and keep your eyes peeled for whales and dolphins). If you’re planning on driving The Cabot Trail, the best time to do this is in the fall, as your trip through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park will be filled with trees in brilliant hues of oranges, red, browns, and greens. Just make sure you keep an eye out for moose! Those guys just love to roam at the side of these roads.

Montreal to the Gaspe Peninsula – Quebec

The Montreal to the Gaspe Peninsula road trip route is the perfect route for nature and history lovers. The trip will take you around seven days to complete but will give you ample time to check out the heritage sites, old villages, and old monuments (the Citadelle of Quebec is a must-see) in Montreal before heading further towards Gaspe. Gaspe is a firm favorite of Canadian locals, who flock to this area overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence to go out on fishing trips, whale watching boats or just set up camp in Bonaventure Island to witness the incredible gannets and 300 other species of birds.

Regina to Saskatoon – Saskatchewan

If you’re looking to put your foot down and drive the open road (you know, without exceeding the speed limit) the Regina to Saskatoon road tripping route is one of the flattest routes in the country and will take you through the Western parts of Canada. You start your road trip in Regina, where you can witness the Royal Canadian Mounted Police parade, then head your way towards Moose Jaw to check out where criminals bootlegged their booze in the Prohibition era, and then drive further west where you reach the open road, flanked with colorful Western-style barns and ranches.

Canada is one of the most beautiful countries on the planet, with stunning landscapes that make you feel as though you’re in the pages of an epic fantasy novel. It is teeming with nature and wildlife, but is also one of the more inhospitable countries due to its freezing temperatures in the winter. Taking a roadtrip in Canada will be one it’s guaranteed you’ll never forget.

Seeing Carrie Fisher’s Amazing Bedroom Will Make You Miss Her Even More

Carrie Fisher’s colorful and eclectic bedroom, offers a great insight into the late Star Wars actress’ creative mind.

Beneath cloud wallpaper, Fisher would often write and hold court in her bedroom that featured items she collected from her travels around the world.

Fisher’s home, featured in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, is exactly how she left it when she died in December one day before her mother, Debbie Reynolds, who lived in the house next door.

On Oct. 7 and 8, Fisher’s customized headboard along with thousands of other items will be up for sale when Profiles in History holds the The Personal Property Auction of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds that will feature many of the pair’s prized possessions, including Fisher’s writing desk, the Christmas tree she kept up year-round, her shooting script from The Empire Strikes Back and her director’s chair from Return of the Jedi.

“If you are a Star Wars fan, this is the Holy Grail,” says Profiles in History CEO Joe Maddalena about the script and chair.

Estimates for the items are not yet available, and part of the proceeds will go to mental health charities: Reynolds’s longtime cause the Thalians and the Jed Foundation, chosen by Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd, 25.

“The things in her room make this quirky environment that was Carrie Fisher,” says Maddalena.

Amazing Super Bowl Facts For A Country Setting The Bar Low Lately

If our presidential election has taught us anything about America, it’s that we love setting the bar low.  And while some might be fascinated by Super Bowl facts and statistics that are genuinely unique or incredible, America’s not really into that. We like things simple. Not so much down-to-earth simple, more like six-feet-under simple.

Here are some insane facts about the nation’s most beloved game in the new low-bar era.

– If you lay every yard on the field end to end, not including the end zones, it comes to EXACTLY 100!

– The game is played Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern US time, when half of the world is sleeping!

– When the first Super Bowl happened in 1967, there were still three whole years left in the 1960s!

– The number of quarters in a single Super Bowl game is equal to amount of quarters in a single dollar!

– No team has ever won the Super Bowl twice in one year!

– Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has the exact same number of letters in his first name as he does in his last name: four!

– Grass is what gives the average football field its green color!

– For the last 50 Super Bowls, of all the teams playing in the game, the team that scores the most points is the team that ends up winning ― an impressive streak!

– NRG Stadium in Houston where the Super Bowl LI takes place has a seating capacity of 72,220. That’s potentially 72,220 noses, 72,220 hearts, and 72,200 mouths!

 – Lady Gaga, headliner for the Super Bowl halftime show, was born in 1986 in Manhattan. So she’s traveled over 30 years to be in the Super Bowl halftime show in Houston!

– The halftime show splits the game PRECISELY in half!

Amazing Video Sums Up The Hilarity That Is Kids’ Sports

For parents, summer means beach trips, barbecues and adorable little kids playing T-ball. Although, anyone who’s watched Little League and the like knows that young children’s sports games are not always thrilling.

In fact, it’s quite remarkable when the “wee warriors” manage to make an actual play.

The Holderness family put together a spot-on video about 5-year-old Penn Charles’ T-ball team as part of their new series “SmallStars” — “a hilarious look at youth sports.”

The video has all the makings of a classic ballgame — from the outfield players lounging in the grass to the infielders chatting about lightsabers to the hitter making a run for it way beyond the first base.

Ultimately, the game ends on a high note, as the narrator declares, “They don’t keep score, but everybody wins today. Time to hug Mommy.”
