The scariest rollercoasters in America

Roller coasters are all about getting your blood pumping and your adrenaline rushing. They are designed to scare you, and for some people, there is no greater feeling in the world than jumping on a roller coaster and watching the world whizz by. If you love a thrill, then check out the scariest roller coasters in America.

Kingda Ka – Six Flags, Jackson, NJ

Let’s start things off with the world’s tallest roller coaster. Kingda Ka at Six Flags in Jackson stands at 420 feet high, and it doesn’t mess around in getting its riders to that height. That’s because the roller coaster is also the second-fastest in the world and races to 128 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds.

The roller coaster will take you up 45 stories before dropping you back down almost instantly thanks to a 90-degree drop. You won’t get long to appreciate the view as you’ll be crashing toward the ground in a dizzying 270-degree spiral.

Kingda Ka

Time Traveler – Silver Dollar City, Branson, MO

Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, introduced a new roller coaster to their customers in 2018 and it’s a complicated one. Not only are there dozens of loops, twists, and turns that you’d expect from most roller coasters, but you’re also spinning the entire time you go around the course.

This is the first, and so far only, roller coaster to have three inversions, a double launch, and a 95-foot vertical loop. There is also a 90-foot free fall and it’s all set to the backdrop of a wild west, 1880s-style theme park.

Superman: Escape from Krypton – Six Flags, Valencia, CA

This ride launches you from a standing start to 100 mph all the way up a 415-foot tower. The scary part? From the perspective of the rider, it looks as though they’re being launched all the way to Krypton as you go straight to the end of the track.

Then as you reach the end, you stop and hurtle back toward the ground at breakneck speed. Superman: Escape from Krypton was the first roller coaster in the U.S. to reach triple-digit speeds and it takes a brave person to ride it.

Valravn – Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH

Valravn is a ‘dive coaster’ which basically means there is no floor and it feels more like you’re flying than any other roller coaster. This ride at Cedar Point, Ohio, will leave you suspended while staring at a 90-degree drop for what feels like an eternity before plunging you toward the ground.

Because there is no floor, there is nothing in front of you as you dangle off the edge of the drop. As there are fewer cars, it really feels as though it’s just you hanging in the sky waiting for the ride to take you wherever it wants to go.

Valravn

These roller coasters will make sure you leave the theme parks with memories you’ll never forget. The rides are so scary that they will be permanently etched into your brain and you’ll want to go on them over and over again.

For The First Time Ever, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA And Miss America Are All Black Women!

Celebrities Visit Hallmark's "Home & Family"

Source: Paul Archuleta / Getty

Last night, North Carolina’s Chelsie Kryst made history when she was announced as Miss USA. Not only was she the latest Black woman to wear the crown, she helped pull off a historic trifecta.

For the first time ever, three Black women are currently wearing crowns as the 2019 Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America.

Kryst joined pageant winners 2019 Miss America Nia Franklin (pictured) and recently crowned 2019 Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris.

Kryst is a civil litigation attorney who received her law degree and MBA from Wake Forest University. During the pageant, fans of Kryst noticed that she wore her natural hair and unlike prior contests, she joined Garris in bypassing the need to straighten their hair in favor of their natural look.

Garris spoke to Refinery21 about her decision saying, “There were a few naysayers saying, ‘You look better with straight hair,’ or ‘You should put in extensions and straighten your natural hair. As Miss Connecticut Teen USA, there are girls who would look at me in awe because they’ve always had the image of straight hair in pageants. Being able to spread the message of diversity, being yourself, and being confident in your curly, natural hair is something that I’m really looking forward to with my new national title.”

The closest Black women had to completing the trifecta before last night was in 2012 when Black women simultaneously wore crowns as Miss Teen USA and Miss USA.

Congrats ladies!

Bank of America Hikes Wages to $20, Hires Thousands From Low-Income Areas

Bank of America is making promises. Big ones.

The second largest U.S. banking conglomerate announced a plan to raise its minimum wage to $ 20 an hour. The minimum wage will immediately spike to $ 17 and creep its way to $ 20 by 2021. In a press release, the banking giant also doubled down on a promise to hire 10,000 workers from low-to-moderate income communities by 2023. So far, it has hired 4,700.

“We are raising our minimum wage because we believe that to best serve our customers and clients, we need the best teams,” said Sheri Bronstein, chief human resources officer at Bank of America, in the release.

And to build those teams, Bank of America is partnering with nonprofits like Year Up and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to find and foster talent from all backgrounds. Once hired, these workers from lower-income areas are given more career-training opportunities through an internal program called The Academy.

“The Academy is like a university within the company,” said John Jordan, the head of Bank of America’s Academy and Advisor Development, in the announcement.

According to Bank of America, all new hires have gone through 80-plus hours of Academy training.

But is the banking industry a good, long-term career option? We dug into the latest employment data and found that, while some jobs are on their way out, others look promising.

Bank of America Jobs: Career Kickstarters or Doomed by Automation?

When thinking of bank jobs, you may first think of bank tellers, the frontline workers at brick-and-mortar banks who help with simple banking services. Then, you might think of ATMs replacing those tellers. It’s even in the name — Automated Teller Machine.

So, who would want these Bank of America jobs if they’re going to be replaced by machines?

According to the latest stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, bank teller jobs are indeed on the decline.

By 2026, bank teller jobs are expected to shrink by 8.3%, or 41,800 jobs total.

But banks comprise a lot more positions. At Bank of America, there are more than 80 different classes of jobs — including some not-so-obvious ones like marketing, clerical and customer service. And as of May 1, each one will pay a guaranteed $ 17 an hour.

Overall, the financial services industry is set to grow 9.6% by 2026, according to the BLS. On closer look, a few financial jobs in particular have promising prospects:

  • Financial managers are slated to balloon 18.7%, or by 108,600 jobs, and have a median pay of $ 127,990.
  • Personal financial advisers will increase 14.9%, or by 40,400 jobs. Median pay is $ 88,890.
  • Financial analysts are expected to grow 10.9%, or by 32,300 jobs, with a median pay of $ 85,660.

With $ 20 minimum wage, high growth potential in several sectors and on-the-job training from The Academy, it doesn’t sound exactly sound like these jobs are on a fast track to becoming obsolete any time soon.

Bank of America Hiring Events

If you want in on Bank of America’s recent workforce changes, we found several ways to help your job hunt, including online and in-person career events and its online jobs portal with more than 7,000 open positions.

Virtual Job Fair for Financial Advisers

And we got you covered, if you don’t know how to prepare for a virtual job fair.

Pro Tip

Treat a virtual job fair just as you would an in-person one. Come prepared with questions and be interview-ready in case things go well.

In-Person Career Events

Why Steinbeck’s Masterpiece is Disturbingly Relevant to Trump’s America

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

It could not be more fitting that the 80th anniversary of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath falls on Palm Sunday this year. Steinbeck’s 1939 depiction of the fictional Joad family after they, like thousands of others, have been forced off their failing Oklahoma farm, is as much a religious tale of unearned suffering as a political account of the Great Depression.

What makes the Joads’ migrant story—and by extension the stories of other Dust Bowl families of the ’30s—especially poignant in 2019 is the perspective it casts on the trials so many immigrant families face today trying to start new lives in the United States after fleeing their home countries. Except for the brief time they spend in a government-run camp for migrants, the Joads are constantly made to feel unwelcome once they take to the road.

The Grapes of Wrath begins with Tom Joad, the eldest Joad son, returning to his family after being paroled from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, where he was sent after being convicted of killing a man in a drunken fight. It is through Tom’s eyes that we first see how his family’s life has been turned upside down.

Outdoor adventures to enjoy across America

We don’t want to toot our own horn, but America is one of the best places in the world when it comes to outdoor adventures. There are so many different environments, from beaches to mountain tops, lakes to volcanos, and everything in between and with each place comes something new to see and do. Whether you are a seasoned outdoor explorer or someone who is usually a couch potato but wants to try something new, there is something for everyone! Here are what we think are the best outdoor adventures to enjoy across America.

Hot air balloon in Albuquerque

Seeing the world from the sky is pretty incredible whatever way you do it, but the most relaxing (And arguably romantic!) is via a hot air balloon. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October is a fantastic time to go as you will be surrounded by the unusual sight of hundreds of other balloons, but even if you head up on a different day, you’ll find a tranquil yet exciting experience unlike any other.

Go diving in the Florida Keys

From one extream to the other, head under the sea to explore some amazingly unique attractions, such as abandoned shipwrecks and stunning coral reefs. The best time to do a diving expedition is between April and July as you will miss the hurricane season peak and the water will be warm. Head out with a guide to make the most of the experience.

Hike around the Pacific Northwest’s National Parks

Every National Park is worth a visit, especially if you are a fan of the great outdoors, however, some of the best and superlative are based in the Pacific Northwest so if you want to hit a few in one trip, then this is the area to head to! Crater Lake National Park in Oregon boasts the deepest lake in the US, whereas North Cascades National Park is home to stunning untouched wilderness.

Camp along the Pacific Coast Highway

The PCH is a fantastic road trip where the terrain seems to change constantly, and there’s always something to see or do. The best way to really enjoy this wonder is to camp along the way, stopping off to explore places such as Malibu, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and LA. Beach campsites are cheap, but the memories will be priceless!

Hit the slopes in Colorado

If you want to spend some time cruising down some varied terrain, on a snowboard or skis, there is nowhere better in the US than Colorado. With stunning views, a range of slopes ideal from beginners to experts and resorts to suit all budgets, Colorado is the place to be if you’re looking for some snow adventure.

If this post doesn’t get your itching to go on an adventure, then there is something wrong with you! You don’t have to be super sporty to try some of these adventures; all you need is an adventurous spirit and some enthusiasm. So, what are you waiting for?!

Gloria Boyland, One of The Most Powerful Women in Corporate America, Drives Innovation At FedEx

BLACK ENTERPRISE recently unveiled our roster of the Most Powerful Women in Corporate America, identifying the highest-ranking female executives of the nation’s largest corporations and honoring this business elite at our 14th annual Women of Power Summit. Included among the three executives representative of this group featured on the cover of our January-March issue was Gloria Boyland, corporate VP, operations and service support for FedEx Corp., which provides millions across the globe with a range of transportation, commerce and business services.

FedEx

The Savannah, Georgia native, who holds an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, joined FedEx in 2004 as vice president of service experience and quality in which she coordinated a range of company-wide improvement initiatives, among other areas, before rising to her current position. The following are Boyland’s responses to questions on her innovative role, career journey and advice to young professionals seeking to advance to corporate leadership:

Share with us your role as corporate vice president, operations and service support? In working with members of FedEx’s Strategic Management Committee, how do you help drive innovation and improvement throughout the organization?

As corporate vice president of operations and service support for FedEx Corporation, I am responsible for the evaluation and leadership of priority advanced operations technology initiatives, service quality improvements, customer experience improvements, and new service offerings for the company.

Technology advancements, digitalization, and the explosive growth of e-commerce require companies like FedEx to respond rapidly to rising customer expectations in a cost-effective manner. My role in the innovation space is comprised of three key parts: 1) I work closely with the members of the FedEx Strategic Management Committee to define key strategic opportunities; 2) I scan the technology space to identify optimal technology partners; and 3) I lead initiatives to achieve speed and scale, such as the recently announced FedEx SameDay Bot.

Define Quality Driven Management and how that approach is a part of the company’s DNA?

Quality Driven Management, or QDM in short, is the secret sauce to the way we work at FedEx. QDM provides a set of common principles and methods that unleashes the creativity of our worldwide team of more than 450,000 team members as we deliver on our Purple Promise to “make every FedEx experience outstanding.”  QDM is like a universal translator – no matter which global region, function or title a team member has, QDM instills in us the passion and commitment to improve customer experience and business performance.

What is it like to work with FedEx founder and CEO Fred Smith? What lessons have you learned from him? How has that relationship impacted you from a professional and personal standpoint?

Mr. Smith is an amazing, transformational leader who inspires and motivates his team to perform at high levels.  He founded FedEx on a “people first” philosophy 45 years ago, and that strong corporate culture continues to be deeply embedded across the organization today. He believes that every one of our more than 450,000 team members across the globe is a vital link in the chain of success. I have learned from him how absolutely critical it is to foster loyalty, the customer’s experience and an entrepreneurial spirit with each team member.

We would like insight into your professional evolution during your formative years. What led to your interest in technology and logistics? Who and what served as your inspiration in the field? Who were your mentors?

Over the years, I have sought and received advice and counsel from family, friends and colleagues, including my own leadership chain and the many team members who make up my organization. Research has shown that diversity of perspective is not only essential to business success, but also to personal success. I have gained perspective from the myriad of people who have mentored me throughout my career and each one was valuable in their own unique way.

Define your management style and guiding principles.

My direct reports are vice presidents who lead their own organizations, so I embrace a coaching management style. My team plays a vital role in the success of my overall organization – everyone matters.  At FedEx, we have adopted a new program called Coach Forward, which focuses on enhancing work performance and motivation.

I have three guiding principles: Each day, recommit to doing your best and being your best; say: do ratio must be 1:1; and, step back so others can step up. These principles ensure success and a sense of accomplishment.

BLACK ENTERPRISE has appropriately named you as one of our Most Powerful Women in Corporate America. As such, what have been some of the challenges that you faced as a woman in your career journey? How have overcoming them shaped you as a business leader?

One of my biggest personal challenges has been maintaining confidence in the midst of setbacks. It has taught me to persevere and to trust my instincts in the face of doubt from others. Persistence and patience, I have learned, are necessary as one struggles to attain and maintain relevance in the organization.  Now, as a business leader, I am confident in my decisions. I learned to find my own voice and trust in my capabilities and experience.

Provide us with your views of the state of diversity in the tech industry? How can more African American women, in particular, make gains in reaching top leadership positions in the corporate sector?

Women and minorities have a presence in the technology industry, but continue to be underrepresented as leadership roles are dominated by white and Asian men. In 2017, women made up about 26 percent of the tech industry, and black women were just 3 percent of that overall number. Leading by example, then creating opportunities for black women is the strategy for increasing our representation. We need to inspire and engage.

Leaders such as Shirley Ann Jackson at FedEx, Linda Johnson Rice at Tesla, and Debra Lee at Twitter, exemplify the importance of representation and influence through corporate board oversight and governance. Innovators like Stephanie Lampkin, founder of Blendoor, and Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls Code, are executing the grassroots approach. Stephanie founded Blendoor to help eliminate racial bias in hiring. She is also publishing a data-driven report, BlendScore, which will rate companies on diversity and inclusion.

Maya Angelou said it well, “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.”  Inspiration and engagement will ignite change.

What advice do you give young professionals who aspire to achieve leadership positions in corporate America?

Be brave. Take some risk. Someone once told me never to take on a role that wasn’t fully established with a clear career path and accountabilities. I have done the exact opposite and it has served me well. We all have different paths to success. Find the path that suits you. Along the way, you’ll find people who will champion you and willingly help lift you up.

The Greenest Cities in America

The terms “environmentally friendly,” “ecological,” and “green” are thrown around a lot these days, but there is no denying that many Americans are earnestly searching for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve a healthier lifestyle. Those who are especially eco-eager may want to consider moving to one of the many cities in the United States where it’s just easier being “green.” Fortunately, many trusted organizations have done the legwork for you, weighing factors like the number of parks and open spaces, safe and easily accessible bike lanes, the availability and usage of public transportation, recycling and waste-reduction programs, municipal initiatives to use and promote renewable energy sources, and the prevalence of environmentally certified building practices. The cities listed here—some of the “greenest” in the country—are derived from sources that include a 2018 study by the personal finance website WalletHub that compared the 100 most populated cities in the United States; studies from the National Geographic Society’s Green Guide, and statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Most Powerful Women in Corporate America

A black woman may not be the image that comes to mind for most people when they hear corporate power—and it certainly won’t be the result of a Google search—but around here, we know better. Women of color are remaking the face of leadership teams and C-suites at corporations across the country and around the globe.

So we’re celebrating the fearless female executives who have managed both to stand firm in the face of hostile corporate environments and to take the bull by the metaphorical horns, powering their careers to the top.

The recent Women in the Workplace report from McKinsey and LeanIn showed that black women receive the least support of all women (and significantly less support than men) from their managers, with just 35% reporting that their managers create opportunities for them to showcase their work, promote their contributions to others, or socialize with them outside of work.

So how have dozens of black women overcome these obstacles to make it to the top of the corporate ladder? By owning their power, of course.

States with the best farmer’s markets in America

With the success of giant markets like Walmart, smaller distributors have been pushed to the side. Thankfully, in recent years there has been a call to move back to locally produced foods and the farmer’s market has become hugely popular. It brings people together to celebrate locally grown and crafted foods. These are the states across America with the best farmers markets.

Tennessee

There are lots of farms raising their own meats in Tennessee, and the Franklin Farmers Market allows you to come close to the people responsible. Then you can hop on over to the Nashville Farmers Market for a cooked lunch as there are plenty of stalls offering deliciously prepared treats. The food court will ensure that no matter what your food preferences are, your taste buds will be thanking you for going.

California

There had to be great produce grown in California, just look at how much sunshine they get! Pretty much all of the USA’s avocados are grown in Cali, plus there’s a ton of amazing orange groves and plenty of fish coming to shore. If you love food, then get yourself to a farmers market in California. We recommend checking out either Grand Central Market in LA or the Davis Farmers Market which travels the state.

Oregon

More people are looking for foods to come straight from the farm to their tables. The Portland Farmers’ Market in Oregon is one of the most successful farmers’ markets in the U. S. to make that happen. Over 150 farmers come together, and there is a variety of products available for people who wander into the market. There are cuts of alternative meats, from bison to yak, and there are many different foods to try, from chestnuts to crepes or burritos.

Washington

The main reason Washington makes this list is thanks to the city of Seattle, and it’s determination to help small businesses succeed. Pike Place Market has been trading for over 100 years after it was established in 1907. There is fresh produce from over 80 farmers on display here, and the best thing about the market is that it’s open all year. Customers are free to chat with the farmers, and there are plenty of crafty options on show.

Illinois

For many Chicago is one of the best culinary hotspots in the world and the Green City Market is where people go to get the best ingredients. The market runs from May until October, when it relocates due to the bitter cold Chicago winter. Those who are lucky enough to go can enjoy over 50 stalls packed full of freshly made food, and some of the best locally grown fruit and vegetables. There is more to the market than just fresh produce, and there are locally crafted drinks, different types of meat, and freshly baked breads to enjoy.

These are the best states to check out farmers markets in the USA. Don’t worry if you don’t live there as all farmers’ markets are great and should be celebrated, so check out your nearest one as soon as possible!

The most underrated places to visit in America

Everyone has heard of New York and Los Angeles, so it’s little surprise they are big tourist hotspots. America is one of the most-visited countries in the world, and not everyone wants to see the major attractions. We’ve found some of the most underrated places to visit in the USA that are sure to satisfy both native and foreign tourists. Want a real taste of America? Check these places out.

Glacier National Park – Montana

Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon are the most popular national parks in America, but there are plenty more that offer as much if not more. Glacier National Park divides America and Canada and is one of the most scenic landscapes you could ever be in. The views rival Switzerland and those who love to hike can really explore the land with their own two feet. There are over 700 miles of trails for hikers to trek across and to give you that Swiss feeling there are a bunch of cabins you can stay in too!

San Antonio – Texas

San Antonio is home to the legendary story of the Alamo. It is where 200 brave Texans held off Mexican troops in a standoff for 13 days. You can visit the site where the battle took place, and some of the oldest architecture found anywhere in the USA, with buildings that date back to the 18th century. If you feel like taking a stroll, you can amble alongside the San Antonio Riverwalk, famed for its views and restaurants.

Chicago – Illinois

Yeah Chicago is one of America’s biggest cities, but people always overlook it for New York or LA. Those are great cities, but Chicago has a vibrancy about it that is hard to find elsewhere. There are a million and one great places to eat, and it’s home to the deep dish pizza. Trying one of these pies will change your life, and the way you look at pizza forever. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a minute, you can take a stroll to the beach on Lake Michigan. There is no shortage of culture here either, and Chicago has some of the best museums and galleries in the world.

Devil’s Tower – Wyoming

Devil’s Tower is a giant rock formation jutting out high into the sky. It looks like something from another planet. Devil’s Tower was the setting of the sci-fi movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and it’s something you’re unlikely to forget if you visit. Every night there are screenings of the iconic film in the shadow of the famous rock formation. If you’re on a road trip, then this is a great place to camp. It’s far enough off the beaten track that the campsites always have a spot, but not so far that you’re driving for hours to get there.

America is a huge place, and there are more places to explore than the ones everyone goes to. These are the most underrated places most people forget to visit when traveling in America.

MLK Historic Sites Closed Due to the Shutdown; Black America Suffers Its Impact

Today would have been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 90th birthday. On this day, many flock to the Ebenezer Baptist Church where King was a pastor, and to King’s home—both of which are part of a national park in Atlanta honoring the late civil rights leader. However, both are closed today, due to the government shutdown. “’Because of a lapse in federal appropriations, this National Park facility is closed for the safety of visitors and park resources,’ said several signs on the landmarks run by the National Park Service,” reported the Philadelphia Tribune.

Bernice King, MLK’s youngest child, was reportedly upset about the closing.

“I feel a little bit of sadness because our main partner in this area, in this district, is the National Park Service … and they are not here with us today. I didn’t expect to cry over this,” she said according to the Philadelphia Tribune.

The current shutdown just made the dubious distinction of being the longest in the country’s history with the President and Democratic leaders at an impasse over funding for President Trump’s vision of a new wall on the southern border, a structure he says will curtail illegal immigration.

In addition to the closing of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in Atlanta, other national parks including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, remain shuttered as the shutdown enters its fourth week.

The shutdown is wreaking disastrous economic havoc for families of federal workers who have not received paychecks since it commenced. Black Americans, in particular, are feeling the enormous impact. In an essay for The Root, Jason Johnson writes:

Endemic discrimination in the private sector forces many African Americans to pursue middle-class dreams through working for the federal government. African Americans make up 18 percent of federal employees, and 21 percent of SES (Senior Executive Service) positions compared to being only 8 percent of executive board members across all fortune 500 companies in America.

This is especially the case in the DMV (D.C., Maryland and Virginia area) where the bulk of employment is either directly or indirectly associated with the federal government. Everyone here knows all too well that Republican dog whistles about “lazy” federal employees have always been a proxy attack on black Americans in the same way the border wall is a symbolic attack on Latinos.

The Guardian reports that the shutdown is destabilizing the predominantly black Washington DC suburbs and Prince George’s County in Maryland. Those areas have among the highest numbers of middle-class blacks due to the numbers that work for the government.

From The Guardian:

“Around here people’s families work for the government, generationally,” said Kenneth Graves, a federal employee currently on furlough who grew up in Prince George’s.

“My mom works for the government. My dad worked for the government,” Graves said. “That’s what we always heard growing up – get a good government job.”

Graves, who is black, said he can probably sustain about another month of the shutdown before he depletes the last of his savings. A furloughed Federal Aviation Administration employee, Graves is currently looking for part-time work in hospitality to keep some income coming in, and stay occupied.

“We’re all just sitting at home or looking for a part-time position,” Graves said. “It’s really challenging.”

Black furloughed workers are trying to come up with ways to stay financially afloat. In Oxon Hill, Maryland, two sisters—both public sector employees have started selling cheesecakes as a way to bring in much-needed income, reports WJLA:

Two Maryland sisters who are both furloughed from their government jobs have launched a business selling cheesecakes to help pay the bills.

Nikki Howard, with the FDA, and sister Jaqi Wright, with DOJ, never imagined the government shutdown would lead them to start a business.

Each have husbands they say can’t work due to disabilities, and with bills such as college tuition for Nikki’s daughter piling up, they say they had to do something.

“It’s either cry or get up and do something, so we decided to get up and do something,” Nikki said.

Furloughed workers are scrambling to make ends meet. They are turning to food banks, launching GoFundMe campaigns, and some are even forced to ration their medication because they can’t afford the co-payments.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

‘Untouchable’ Makes the Case for More Lenient Sex Offender Laws in America

Meerkat Media Collective

According to Untouchable, there’s a reason most Americans think sex offenders, and pedophiles in particular, are incurable, and thus destined to relapse: 2002’s McKune v. Lile, in which Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in a plurality opinion that there was a “frightening and high risk of recidivism” for such predators, and that “the rate of recidivism of untreated offenders has been estimated to be as high as 80 percent.” That statement has since been used in numerous legal verdicts as well as to support countless pieces of state and local legislation aimed at curbing the rights of those found guilty of crimes against kids. In doing so, it’s become de facto common wisdom, almost universally accepted as a bedrock truth about individuals who possess child pornography or abuse (or have improper relations with) a minor.

The problem? The sole piece of evidence that led Justice Kennedy to make such a bold claim came from a 1986 Psychology Today article written by Ronald Longo, a counselor who ran a treatment program in an Oregon prison—and there was absolutely no statistical basis for his “80 percent” assertion. Moreover, Longo himself has since rejected that figure.

Untouchable, a documentary about sex offenders written, directed and produced by David Feige—which arrives on home video and VOD on January 15, after winning  the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival—doesn’t drop that bombshell revelation until after its midway point, which in journalistic terms is akin to burying the lede. Nonetheless, Feige’s delay does little to neuter its impact, given that he spends the early portions of his non-fiction film incisively investigating multiple sides of the sex-offender issue. From victims and perpetrators, to activists who want to throw the convicted away and lose the key, it’s an eye-opening look at a thorny topic that, on the face of it, probably doesn’t strike many as very complex or controversial at all.

The best places to go ice skating in America

When the holiday season arrives, people all over the country take to the ice in full force, as the best time to go ice skating begins. Ice skating is an activity that is enjoyed by people of all ages all over the world, and it doesn’t matter if the ground is covered in crisp white snow or if a blazing sun is burning in the sky. So where are the best places to go ice skating in America? We will try to point you in the right direction to have a fun filled ice skating experience.

Missouri – Kansas Ice Terrace

In Kansas City, Missouri, you will find the Crown Center Ice Terrace, where many locals gather to enjoy the festive season on the ice. It has quite a history – people have been skating here for more than forty years. The Ice Terrace is all decked out for Christmas, with a 100-foot tree, 6,000 white lights, and more than 1,000 Christmas ornaments. Ice skating can be enjoyed right up until March 11th.

Jackson, Wyoming – Snake River Sporting Club

Ice time at Snake River, which has quite an exotic ring about it, has a fun, North Pole winter feel about it. The view is incredible, with the snowy peaks of the Teton mountain range close by and an abundance of skiers flying about on skies. It’s like a scene from a festive Christmas postcard, and a paradise for skaters. Behind the Snake River Clubhouse, you will find the ice rink surrounded by the forest and mountains. This location feels so peaceful and so close to nature. The air is crisp, which really helps skaters get in the spirit of this special time of year.

Rockford, Illinois – Eclipse Lagoon

Rockford’s Eclipse Lagoon is another location set in nature that is really hard to beat. Imagine all the best features of a frozen lagoon at the beautiful Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. Obviously, with a natural environment, quality ice time is determined by the weather conditions, but January is normally a good time to visit the Eclipse Lagoon.

Colorado Springs, Colorado – The Broadmoor World Arena Ice Hall

The exceptional point about Broadmoor is that it’s an Olympic training ice rink, and has been for many years. This is where you can really strut your stuff in the same place where champions practiced their moves. In fact, there is only one other place like Broadmoor in the whole United States. You will have to pay special attention to when you book your time on the ice, as the rink is mainly used for training.

Jackson, New Hampshire – Nestlenook Farms

This is another location with a real winter wonderland feel about it. The views are reminiscent of those Christmas card themes, and there is a kind of fairy tale atmosphere about the place. It’s natural and you get to skate under decorated bridges as you make your way around the frozen pond. Other seasonal treats available here include campfires, hot drinks, and sleigh rides.

If you are looking for some quality ice time, in idyllic conditions, these five locations might just be perfect for you.

The Deadly Stress of Being a Black Woman in America

The evidence is irrefutable: Racism is getting away with murder as the leading cause of maternal and infant deaths and premature births among Black women.

Such is the conclusion of two major reports released this year in 2018. The first is a collaboration between the University of California San Francisco and California Department of Public Health: “California’s Maternal and Infant Health Assessment,” presented in July to First 5 California, a state-wide commission aimed at improving the lives of women and children. The second, “Fighting at Birth: Eradicating the Black-White Infant Mortality Gap,” is based on research by Duke University’s Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity and Insight Center for Community Development.

It was once thought that the most significant factors in deaths among pregnant women or the cause of premature births were so-called “risky behaviors.” The most obvious adverse behaviors included smoking, alcohol abuse and drug use. Long-term studies showed that a reduction in risky behavior and increasing women’s access to education and employment opportunities shifted maternal and infant outcomes. It was proven that if women received more education and enjoyed economic security through employment, they were less likely to engage in behaviors that placed them and their unborn child at risk.

That is no longer the case. Both of these reports blow that thesis out of the water.

What the studies revealed was that assumption of positive health outcomes for mothers and infants through a reduction in risky behaviors and improved socio-economic status was certainly true—but only for white women. The Duke study made crystal clear that Black women with higher education and more economic success were at an even greater risk of early death for them and their infants during pregnancy and were more likely to deliver prematurely.

Serena Williams and the premature delivery of her first child illustrates the major findings of both reports. At the time of her pregnancy, Williams was an athlete in great physical condition; she had no evidence of “risky behaviors” and had access to the best medical services. What then caused her to give birth premature? Was it just a fluke, or did her premature delivery prove the case that these studies are making? Was racism—and the accumulated stress of being publicly denigrated, a recipient of unequal treatment—responsible?

It is rare for a scientific study to make such a provocative declaration that racism is the primary cause of maternal and infant deaths and premature births for Black women, and even rarer for researchers grounded in data to declare unconditionally, and with emphasis, that “there is no safe age for Black women to have children.”

That is such an all-encompassing pronouncement it leaves little room for misunderstanding.

Racism. Without any hesitation, both of these studies point clear and definitive fingers, supported by data, at racism as the primary cause of Black women maternal and infant deaths. Regardless of age and socioeconomic circumstances, Black women have the highest maternal and infant deaths and premature birth rates among any other group in America. “For Black women,” they report, “exposure to discrimination and racialized stress throughout the lifespan can negatively impact birth outcomes.”

While such a conclusion seems counterintuitive, it points to the everyday reality of professional Black women. While working in high profile professions or in leadership positions may improve their socio-economic status, a side-effect is that, more often than not, they find themselves working in hostile work environments that contribute high levels of stress to their lives. Additional stress may emanate from the fact that professional women often live in predominantly white communities, where they may not experience community support and acceptance. At work and at home, Black women are in direct contact with high levels of micro-aggression, targeting, exclusionary behavior and overt racism.

We witnessed this with Serena Williams. Although she is the reigning tennis queen, Williams has had her fair share of stress brought on by racism. She has been booed by predominately white audiences when she won tennis competitions. Her most recent encounter with unequal treatment were the challenges of her tennis attire being judged inappropriate, and the penalty she received for challenging comments made by a judge. (The public, and other white tennis professionals, agreed that Serena was in the right—and pointed out that white players, men and women, have made similar challenges and comments and none were penalized nor reprimanded in any way.)

Just like in health, a double standard for Williams was at play. Did the stress Williams encounter over the course of her tennis career play a significant role in the premature birth of her daughter? Is she the poster woman for how racism is getting away with murder?

One Black OB-GYN physician thought so. In a piece for Vice, Sanithia L. Williams, MD, asserts that, based on the information already presented, it’s highly likely that racism played a part in Williams’ difficult birthing experience—and that the world is lucky she did not die. Too many other Black women have.

The adverse, and sometimes deadly, outcome of coping with racism as a Black woman in America is not accidental. The concept of “murder” requires a level of premeditation—in this instance, rooted in the ongoing discrimination and structural forces of racism that deliberately sets forth barriers to the progress of Blacks. Even successful individual Black women such as Williams are subjected to unequal and unjust treatment and public disparagement as they make their way in the world.

The lives of Black people in America have been shaped by living under a system of oppression that harkens back to slavery. While the institution of slavery may have been dismantled, it was replaced with structural oppression that manifests itself in the form of socioeconomic and political inequality that lead to systemic disparate treatment in health care, personal and public disparagement (“angry Black woman,” “hoes and bitches”), cumulative acts of microaggression and daily exposure to stressful and hostile work environments and living environments.

The results of these studies are not new—but in truth, conditions that seem to adversely impact Blacks as a group do not receive the same medical priority attention. The adverse impact of living while Black under racism has been taking its toll on the health of Black Americans for generations. We have the highest incidence of hypertension and diabetes than any other group in America, except possibly Native Americans (also a highly oppressed group). And while all people of African descent live with the stress of racism, Black women face intersecting systems of oppression that include gender alongside race.

“Racism and sexism are inextricably intertwined, combining into one hybrid force that is founded in the devaluing of (Black) women and racist perceptions of gender roles,” one group of scholars said in reporting research supported by the National Institute of Health. “Throughout history, essentializing and contradictory images of African American women have pervaded U.S. culture.”

There is virtually no safe place for Black women. It is our hope as a group that the genius and technology we have contributed to the shaping of American culture, despite the barriers constructed by racism, become permanently inscribed in America’s history. We are very much a part of the cultural and political DNA of this country, and have made significant contributions to America’s reputation as a world leader. We have kept this country on a path of moral righteousness that lives out the principles of its Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

We too sing: “America, we are its people.” We are contributors to this country’s genius. We are part of “we the people.” And we must stand strong against racism getting away with the murder of our Black mothers and infants.

How The ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater’ Conquered America

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

This year, Debbie McClain will make around 800 ugly Christmas sweaters from her workshop in Fremont, Indiana. She’ll ship the bedazzled jumpers around the world—but McClain will not be found in one herself.

“I love them, but I don’t actually wear them,” McClain told The Daily Beast. “I don’t go anywhere this year. I’m strapped to the shop. I’m in such a Grinch mode by the time we get to Christmas that we don’t usually have a tree up.”

McClain works with a team of nine to pump up the wearable holiday cheer found in her brick-and-mortar store and online Etsy shop, which is aptly-titled Tacky Ugly Christmas Sweaters.

If you’re a keen traveler, you know the importance of getting a good meal in your bellies while you’re on the road. However, there are many countries where getting roadside food is unheard of, and you just have to wait until the next service station to pick up a sandwich and a candy bar. But not in America. America is filled with some of the best roadside food stalls that will keep you going during your travels. What more could you want?

Captain Cooks – Monticello, New York

Located in the Catskill Mountains in the very centre of the ‘Borscht Belt’ in Monticello, New York is the famous Captain Cooks. This roadside static caravan has been transformed into one of the best eateries on America’s roads. With their Italian heritage, the owners offer incredible Italian-American food infusions – including their yummy Sabrett Hot Dog heaped with all the trimmings. Grab a quick bite before you get back to your road trip.

Cookin’ From Scratch – Doolittle, Missouri

If you ever find yourself driving down the old Route 66 roadways, keep an eye out for the giant chicken – you can’t really miss it, to be honest! Cookin’ From Scratch is one of the most popular stops for truckers, with many of them wishing they drove this way just to try out their famous chicken. Each of the chicken steaks is pan-fried in individual cast iron skillets that give them an incredible juiciness, taste, and crispy skin without it being overly greasy like many fast food chains. If you’ve still got room after this insane chicken, you just have to try out their wild blackberry cobbler. It’s to die for.

Space Aliens Grill and Bar – North Dakota

If you want to rest your driving legs and have more of sit down meal, then the Space Aliens Grill and Bar is the ultimate roadside food outlet. Located in Fargo, North Dakota you could see this restaurant from space! With its creepy alien decor, futuristic theme and extra-terrestrial furnishings, it’s definitely a photo opportunity during your road trip. As if this wasn’t enough, the ribs here are incredible, and they’ve even been judged as the best in America.

Soulman’s Bar-B-Que – Van, Texas

Texas is known for its barbecue – and if you’re driving through Texas it would be rude not to try it out, right? Soulman’s Bar-B-Que offers some of the best roadside barbecue in America, and you definitely won’t regret it. Their meat is cooked slow and low over smoking hickory wood which not only gives it a delicious smoky taste, but it also makes the meat incredibly soft – and it just falls off the bone! Roadtrip + meat = match made in heaven.

Gladys Knight and Ron Winans’ Chicken and Waffles – Georgia

Sometimes you just really need chicken and waffles. Whether you’re in your hometown, on vacation, or driving across America – chicken and waffles just make everything better. This roadside restaurant offers some of the best home comforts in Georgia, meaning you can settle down and try out some green fried tomatoes, smoked turkey wings, collard greens, braised oxtail, and of course, fried chicken and waffles.

It seems like more and more food trucks are taking over the culinary world and we can’t help but absolutely love it! Food trucks have opened a new world for foodies, for those who just like to grab a bite on the go and especially for those who are looking to start a career in the restaurant business, it’s really a win-win for all sides. It’s almost like a micro-test of how well your business and concept could go before you go and invest thousands of dollars on opening a restaurant. Moreover, it’s like free advertising where you pretty much have your own rolling media platform and all you have to do is focus on cooking good food.

The amount of food trucks that have opened across the U.S. and across the world even, is simply ungraspable. People have realized that there is more than just sandwiches, ice cream or flipped burger, in fact, there is an entire world of tastes cuisines that is now open  for the wide public. You don’t have to book a table at a michelin star restaurant if you want top-notch food, because you can now buy gourmet food on the street if you are craving for something special. Food trucks have definitely gotten fancier over the years, but there’s still a neat variety of nostalgic trucks that serve just good but simple dishes. The best thing about traveling food trucks is that if you hear about a certain theme or concept that is being served in one side of the country, there’s a good chance you’ll get to taste it in your area because these babies go on food-tours as well! We’ve selected the coolest food trucks that can be found in the U.S in terms of design, taste and just overall awesomeness.

Thoroughfare Food Truck

This beautiful food truck opened it’s windows back in 2013 and has been serving the residents of Greenville, South Carolina ever since then. Neil and Jessica who also happen to be a married couple own this lovely truck and they serve a good combination of refined ut also familiar flavors. For example, you can get rosemary chicken salad topped with fine goat cheese. They also specialize in private events.

Border Grill

Ok, so this one has got to be all about good food, after all Border Grill was founded by two former Top Chef Masters contestants, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. These two took their upscale Mexican food to the streets with their lovely Border Grill Truck. They just made a few tweaks to make their original menu fit the -on-the-go crowd. You can find six different tcos, five options for quesadillas and other great side dishes.

Cupcake Carnivale

On a sweeter note, Cupcake Carnivale is every dessert lover’s dream come true. From Strawberry Oreo Cookies & Cream to Chocolate Pumpkin Patch and That’s S’more, one can find the sweetest and most creative cupcakes they’ve ever seen. It’s truly a cupcake festival in one cute truck.

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck

This Hawaiian truck is one historical institute. The family business opened its gates and later its windows in 1953 when there were just a couple of shrimp recipes. What started as occasional stops alongside the North Shore soon turned into a sensation all over the country. Just by the number of signatures that are found all over the truck you can sense that this place is a must-visit.

Pepe

Washington D.C. wouldn’t seem like obvious choice or location for a food truck, but that’s part of the charm. This is a fusion-free food truck, which is kind of refreshing in a way. The menu constantly changes and some of the dishes you can find there are  grilled cheese with manchego, seared beef tenderloin and for dessert – hazelnut ice cream flauta. Yummy!

This Kid From Brooklyn Could Return America to Chess Dominance for the First Time Since Bobby Fischer

Fabiano Caruana did not start playing chess in Brooklyn, New York when he was five years old because his mom thought he’d be a future grandmaster, or that he’d one day play for the World Chess Championship, just like fellow Brooklynite Bobby Fischer did back in the early 1970s. No, Caruana’s mom thought chess would calm him down and keep him focused in school.

“I was having trouble with concentration,” Caruana, 26, tells TIME, “and the idea was that maybe chess would help with that. It was more of a remedy.” Before long, this cure for little-kid hyperactivity took Caruana much further than his Lego buildings and origamis ever could. Within a year, he was winning tournament games against kids who were in junior high school and older. “His first instructor told us he was trying to teach her chess concepts,” says Caruana’s father, Lou. “We knew he was special.”

Starting on Friday in London, Caruana will become the first American since Fischer, who won the world chess title in 1972 and held it until 1975, to challenge for the World Chess Championship. Curuana faces Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, the world chess champ since 2013, in the 12-game match that will be played over three weeks at The College, a 10,000-square-foot venue in the city. Chess rarely attracts much mainstream attention in the United States. But chess pundits expect that a Caruana victory could spark an explosion in chess interest America hasn’t seen since Fischer’s heyday. “You do like your winners, don’t you?” says Mark Crowther, the U.K.-based founder and editor of The Week In Chess.

In March, Caruana earned the right to face Carlsen by beating out seven other top players to win the Candidates Tournament in Berlin. “Fabiano has the power to be better than Carlsen,” says Crowther. “There have been very, very few players you can say that about. I honestly don’t know who’s going to win this match. It’s a total toss-up.”

Caruana forged a circuitous path to representing the U.S. on chess’ grandest stage. His family decided to take Fabiano out of school and move to Spain when he was 12 in order to compete in more high-level tournaments and train with top instructors. Since his mother is Italian, he could compete for Italy’s chess federation. “It was not an easy decision,” says Caruana’s father Lou of taking his son out of school. “The plan was always to do it for a year or two and see how it works out. Is he loses a year of school, so what? He’s smart and can catch up. We could always correct things if it wasn’t going in the right direction.”

Initially, Caruana didn’t support the plan. “I wasn’t really keen on the idea of going to Europe when my parents suggested it,” he says. “I had friends in Brooklyn; I had a life in Brooklyn. But once I started playing chess pretty much full time, it just became a normal part of life. Me and my dad would just go from tournament to tournament in different countries. I missed out on social things in school and everything, but I was able to see the world as a young kid, which is very rare.”

Lou, a former data processing consultant who also earned income from real estate holdings, says he spent as much $ 100,000 on chess travel and instruction for his son in those early years in Europe. The investment paid off: Before his 15th birthday, Caruana became the youngest chess grandmaster, at the time, in the history of both Italy and the United States. Caruana admits early success swelled his head a bit. “You don’t think you need the work, which is always a mistake,” Caruana says. “I would take excessive risks and do crazy things to win a game, and commit suicide.”

Caruana overcame his growing pains, however, and started earning a living playing chess. At the same time, he eyed a return to the United States. In 2014, he turned in a dominant performance at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, beating out Carlsen and other elite players to win the tournament. The Sinquefield Cup is named after Rex Sinquefield, a financier who pioneered the first index stock funds back in the 1970s – and has invested north of $ 50 million over the past decade to building one of the world’s premier chess clubs in St. Louis. With St. Louis now a budding epicenter of global chess, Caruana moved back to America in 2015, and switched federations from Italy to the U.S. Caruana now lives in St. Louis. “For a chess player,” Caruana says, “it’s the best place to be.”

To prepare for his match against Carlsen, Caruana spent some time this summer training at Sinquefield’s country home in Missouri. Besides playing hours of chess with fellow grandmasters, he jogged and shot hoops and played tennis to keep in peak physical shape. “Chess requires a lot of stamina,” says Caruana. “You’re sitting down and you’re playing six, seven hours at a time. You’re burning a lot of calories and you can easily get mentally tired. If your physical form is not good, then you’re likely to crash at some point.” Caruana doesn’t stick to a strict diet, though he does try to avoid excessive sugar, to avoid the high and inevitable come down.

In the weeks leading up to the World Chess Championship, Caruana has trained in Spain, where he’s done yoga and swam in the Mediterranean to keep his head clear. He’s also played games for up to eight hours a day. “The goal is get you thinking about chess 24/7 in preparation for the match,” he says. “It’s playing quick games, slow games, anything that will get you in that mode where you calculate very quickly. Your mind is working in the best possible shape.”

Caruana knows that Americans are blessed with plenty of sports and entertainment options. So why would even casual observers of chess have a stake in his three-week match with Carlsen, never mind those who don’t play the game? “It’s sort of like boxing or MMA,” Caruana says. “It will be a fight that is blow for blow, with each of us trying to get the upper hand, trying to impose our will on the other guy. It’s not a physical sport. But if people are into these one-on-one duels, chess is in a way similar to that.”

Interview With Angela Rye: Time to Bet on Ourselves, Black America

Midterm elections are around the corner and there is so much at stake for black America. This year, there is a record-breaking number of women running for Congress and we are witnessing a resurgence of black political figures eager to restore justice, equity, and hope for the nation at a time where it seems extremely divided.

With politicians like Stacey Abrams, Andrew Gillum, and Ben Jealous running for governor in this year’s election, they could potentially make history in Georgia, Florida, and Maryland as the first black governors in those states. And if they receive the victory they’d also add to the short list of four African American governors in the history of the nation.

Beyond making history for governorships; control over the chambers of Congress; who wins the majority of the House and Senate; state legislative seats and non-federal offices are all at stake. As well as pressing issues that will be voted on at the local level.

That is why BET News will premiere Angela Rye. Our Vote. Our Power., an enlightening and timely news special hosted by Angela Rye. Joining her for the special is former Senior Advisor to President Obama Valerie Jarrett, recording artist Remy Ma, Sen. Cory Booker, activist Shaun King, Rep. Edward “Ted” James, civil rights lawyer Kristen Clarke and Dr. Connie Wun as they discuss the key issues at stake in the upcoming midterm elections on the ground in communities and nationally. The special also features an exclusive sit-down interview with former first lady Michelle Obama who will discuss the power of voter registration and turnout on the local and national level.

Your Vote Matters

In preparation for Election Day and the empowering special, we spoke with political pundit Angela Rye about the importance of being civically engaged on Nov. 6 and every election.

With the midterms approaching, what is at stake for black women?

I think that everything is at stake. One of the biggest mistakes that we make is making it seem like this one election matters more than all of the rest. Every single one of the elections we can ever vote in matters this much. One of the worst things that we can do is wait for things to get as bad as they’ve gotten to engage in the process.

So what I would tell black women is, when you look at the record number of women running for office this year. There are 444 black women who are running for office in the midterms. That number could be so much higher. And wouldn’t it be even more incredible if they could win?! And they can win if we exercise our voting power. We are electable. We are powerful. Every time we decide to stand together we do matter and we do count. And I would say that’s the first step; really believing that and acting

This country says, “Thank you for your help,” to black women time and time again but they don’t necessarily believe in them as candidates. What is at stake for this country if black women do not win the majority of the positions they are running for?

One of the examples that I use often is because I am so inspired by her is Stacey Abrams. Stacey Abrams is this single black woman in Georgia rocking full natural hair; brilliant, and went to an HBCU, but not a school that white America would deem as OK or acceptable to be electable. All the while, before she decided that she was going to run and during the primary was repeatedly told that she wasn’t electable because she didn’t look the part and because of how she was raised.  And the establishment went as far as to run “white Stacey” against her. The same state which in any other circumstances Democrats would cry foul. They would say that, ‘this is a voter suppression or voter confusion tactic.’

Stacey did not let any of that sway her and she wasn’t concerned about how much money she raised or didn’t raise. She counted on the people. So, what I would say to black women who are questioning our power and Saying that they don’t give us a chance is that we can give us a chance. If we show up every time in record-breaking numbers and if we beat the odds like we have turned out in so many elections before, we can always change the tide. It’s time for us to start betting on ourselves.

There is a national moment of harassment that black people are living in right now. And historically we’ve always lived through harassment. How can we call on our elected officials to recognize this moment?

I think if you have an elected official that doesn’t recognize it, this should be their last term. We should start holding our elected officials accountable the same way that we talk about holding police departments accountable. We should hold our community leaders and activists on any platform, whether it’s social or on television or whether they engage in social movements and marches and protests. Anyone who doesn’t think that this is a national crisis that needs to be immediately dealt with shouldn’t have a platform.

How can people advocate for themselves on the spot if they face voters suppression?

There is a number, 1-866-Our-Vote. The election protection hotline has existed for years and they are responsive, timely, well researched, and they are amazing lawyers run by the Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights. I would definitely lean on them and let people know immediately if that happens. I would also say to use social media, especially during early voting and the day of election on Nov. 6. It’s a great tool to flag things for local and national media outlets. And it’s certainly a great way to flag for the election protection hotline and the folks that will be monitoring social media. You can also text Election Protection at to 9779.

Almost immediately following this midterm election, people are going to bring out the bells and whistles for the 2020 presidential election. How can we get people civically engaged 365?

One of the most important things we can realize is, for example, folks keep saying that this is the most important election. The reason for that is (in the year) 2020 there will be another Census and they’re developing the questions that are going on that Census right now. Some of those questions are designed to intimidate people who are living here undocumented. And what I would say is, why wouldn’t you want to have a say in that?

When we talk about electing more black people… the lines for congressional districts and state legislative districts are drawn during the Census. You will not have a say in that if you do not elect people who represent your voice this election year. These are the folks that have input on that Census. That is we have to show up, show out, and make history ourselves.

Takashi Murakami, Virgil Abloh and ‘America Too’ at Gagosian Beverly Hills

The line was half a block long, not an unusual occurrence at Gagosian Beverly Hills, but certainly one that hasn’t happened since its Oscar Week opening featuring Damien Hirst back in February. Wednesday night’s opening of “America Too,” the third collaboration between Takashi Murakami and Virgil Abloh, drew a small army of fans, most of them young and several of them famous.
Travis Scott, Kourtney Kardashian, Usher, Kid Cudi, Orlando Bloom and Luka Sabbat were spotted in the crowd, which was sizable inside, though nothing compared with the orderly throng outside. They were let in a handful at a time, making it possible for as many fans to take in the event as possible.
Many of the artworks themselves, in a variety of media, were also oversize, including the giant “Material Too,” a take on the American flag, that hung in the center of the North Gallery. It was probably also the biggest number of iPhones seen at an art opening, as young fans excitedly Instagrammed themselves in front of the colorful works, including Murakami’s iconic rainbow flower, onto which the signature arrows of Abloh’s Off-White label were overlaid, or “Arrows and Flower Neon Sign” and a rotating piece that blinked like
