Miss America Says Transgender Women Should Be Allowed To Compete

Nia Imani Franklin, representing New York state, was crowned the 98th Miss America in Atlantic City on September 9. The 25-year-old is the ninth Black woman to win the pageant. The North Carolina native is making the media rounds and opened up about the ban against transgender women competing in the competition.

According to Advocate.com, “One of the competition’s official rules is that you have to be a ‘natural born woman’ to compete, therefore eliminating transgender women and non-binary women.” In an interview on The Clay Cane Show on Sirius XM Urban View, Cane asked Franklin, “Do you think trans women should be allowed to compete?”

Franklin responded, “That’s something I haven’t given a lot of thought to. I could see the organization may be going into a different direction in the future, but at this time our goal is just to focus on women who want to further their education.”

She continued, “If trans women want to compete I think they should be able to — that’s not something I think we are really putting too much emphasis on as far as, ‘Are you trans? Check this box’ when you compete. When I competed, in my application, there was nothing that asked me if I was a trans woman or not, so we’re definitely not discriminating.”

Cane did confirm there is currently a ban on transgender women, but Franklin said it was her opinion that trans women should be able to compete. Click here to hear Nia Imani Franklin in her own words.

‘Good Morning America’ Cohost Lara Spencer Marries Rick McVey

Pop those champagne corks! Good Morning America‘s Lara Spencer married entrepreneur Rick McVey in a romantic ceremony on Saturday, September 1, Us Weekly can confirm.

The couple tied the knot in Vail, Colorado, with the beaming bride being walked down the aisle at the outdoor wedding by her son, Duff. Spencer wore a sheer sleeveless gown with a long veil with her hair up as Christina Perri‘s “A Thousand Years” played.

Spencer, 49, and the tech entrepreneur announced their engagement in January, nearly two years after the Flea Market Flip star began dating McVey.

Us confirmed in 2017 that the pair were an item after they were spotted making out at a New York City restaurant. “She’s known him for years and they started dating around a year ago,” a source told Us at the time.

Since then she has shared sweet photos on social media with the founder and CEO of MarketAxess Holdings — who she described in an Instagram caption earlier this year as “my partner in love, life, laughter and fun” — documenting their vacations in Greece and France as well as a wedding planning weekend in Vail in June.

Spencer was previously married to former CNN reporter David Haffenreffer. They share two kids, son Duff and daughter Kate, and ended their 15-year marriage in March 2015.

“After a lot of thought, care and consideration, we have decided to end our marriage,” the pair said in a statement to the New York Post‘s Page Six at the time. “It’s a sad decision that did not come easily, especially because we respect and love each other and our children. They remain our top priority. We will raise them and care for them together.”

Black Leaders Unite to Bring Jobs and Justice to Black America

The National Urban League (NUL), in cooperation with the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), launched a multi-city tour on Thursday to promote economic stability and growth in urban communities around the country. The Jobs and Justice tour, which kicked off in Michigan, promises to empower African Americans with knowledge, tools, and resources to increase upward mobility and ensure equal protection under the law through a series of town hall discussions. During the tour, the NUL and its local affiliates will lead the discussions with CBC members about policies to advance a black prosperity. The town hall discussions will also focus on how African Americans can use their voice and vote to change their communities and the nation at large.

“Urban communities and infrastructure have been shattered, not by bombs and tanks, but by malfeasance and indifference,” said Marc H. Morial, NUL president and CEO, in a statement. “It is past time for our government to demonstrate that very same commitment to our own struggling urban families and communities that was shown when Europe needed rebuilding after the World War II, Afghanistan following the War on Terror, and Wall Street during the financial crisis.”

The tour is named after the Jobs and Justice Act of 2018, a 1,300-page bill that addresses economic and social inequities and injustices. The act, which was introduced by CBC Chairman Rep. Cedric L. Richmond in May, calls for investments in public schools and infrastructure, a federally mandated living wage, restorative justice for ex-offenders, and tax incentives for hiring young people, veterans, and the unemployed. The bill also incorporates the NUL’s Main Street Marshall Plan: From Poverty to Shared Prosperity, a comprehensive proposal that aims to combat poverty and promote equality by investing $ 4 trillion in infrastructure, education, job training, and health insurance over the course of 10 years.

According to Rep. Richmond, the record-breaking African American employment rate—a historic achievement that the Trump administration has misleadingly taken credit for achievingshould not be used as a measure of success for the black community. Rather, he called for attention to systemic ills that have caused the black unemployment rate to remain double the rate of whites and have stalled the progression of black Americans, who still lag behind whites in wealth, income, and homeownership, and across all educational levels.

“Some folks would have you believe that our community is doing well because African American unemployment is at a historic low, which is the result of policies and programs implemented by the Obama administration. But the African American unemployment rate is not a good barometer of our community’s success. When African Americans were slaves and sharecroppers, African American unemployment was 0 percent, but I don’t think anyone would say that our community was doing well then,” Richmond said. “As a result of racism and discrimination in our country, African Americans still face a number of economic and social barriers that the federal government can and should help our community address since it was and still is complicit in building them. Although we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go.”

The next stop on the Jobs and Justice tour is in Pennsylvania, which will be hosted by NUL’s local Philadelphia chapter on Sept. 7. Other city dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

MEMO TO AMERICA: ‘BELONGING’ IS A CIVIL RIGHT, NOT AN OPTION

Earl G. Graves, Sr.

Earl G. Graves, Sr.

These basic privileges of freedom lie at the foundation of what it means to be an American citizen. Even these three concepts can be distilled down to an even simpler, more basic one: The right to exist; to live.

For centuries, African Americans have endured the violation of that basic right by white Americans who feel entitled, by virtue of their race alone, to decide when and where a black person should exist. While this has been true throughout the history of our nation, the current era of cell phone cameras and social media has thrown an ugly spotlight on just how often white people will randomly and capriciously decide that a black person “doesn’t belong here”—and call the police.

The reasoning behind these reprehensible and irresponsible actions (and waste of police time and resources) are as ridiculous as they are varied. White people have called 911 in response to:

-A black female graduate student at Yale University, for napping in the lounge of a dormitory, by a white college student who wasn’t sure she belonged there.

-An 8-year-old black girl selling water in San Francisco, because the girl’s mother was too loud and the selling of the water “illegal.”

-A 12-year-old black boy operating his lawn mowing enterprise in Ohio, because he may have unintentionally mowed a portion of a neighbor’s lawn while mowing an adjacent lawn.

-A trio of black filmmakers staying at an AirBnB in Rialto, California, for failing to wave to a neighboring white person who waved at them.

-In perhaps the best-known case, two black men, Rashon Nelson and Dante Robinson, for “trespassing” because they waited for a meeting with a business associate in a Philadelphia Starbucks without ordering coffee. (This incident prompted Starbucks to shut down all of its stores for racial bias training this past May.)

I could go on, and talk about police being called on the black fire inspector doing his job in a predominantly white neighborhood, the black family holding a funeral for a loved one, the black real estate investor looking at a property, and countless others—all violated by racial profilers gone wild.

In the past, incidents like these were dismissed by white people as exceptional, “isolated” cases, innocent mistakes—or outright disbelieved. But the ubiquitousness of phone cameras and 911 records now provide incontrovertible evidence of what black people endure at the hands of white people who randomly decide we “don’t belong here,” that our very presence as black people makes them feel unsafe, and thus, justified in calling the police.

The truth is that black people—and society as a whole—are paying the price imposed by certain white people suffering with internalized racial superiority (IRS). People with IRS essentially believe that they, as white people, belong (especially in places, such as an Ivy League dorm lounge, they view as “white” spaces), and we, as black people, do not. Racial profiling practiced by white people suffering with IRS has laid the foundation and created the environment from which the routine and epidemic shooting of unarmed black people by law enforcement is a natural outgrowth.

That is not just racist; it is un-American, and we—all Americans, of all races—must stand up and speak out against it. There needs to be real consequences, including criminal charges, for those who recklessly and capriciously misuse the time, attention, and resources of law enforcement, as if they were a personal security force for white people alone. We need to press our elected officials as well as state and local legislators to put the appropriate legal sanctions in place to punish those who call 911 on black people for merely living their lives, and disincentivize others from doing so.

The violation of black people’s basic human right to exist, to belong, or simply live their lives and enjoy the benefits of American citizenship unencumbered, must no longer be tolerated.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

Cuomo Is Right, America Has Never Been ‘Great’ For Many of Us

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking some heat for a statement he made at a conference on Wednesday. His words:

We’re not going to Make America Great Again. It was never that great. We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.

Of course, the right-wing (which loathes Cuomo as well as the state he governs) did not hesitate to twist the governor’s words out of context and use them in full-blown attack mode.

“It’s shocking that Andrew Cuomo would make such an offensive remark that insults the people of this country, the ideals upon which she was founded and the countless men and women who have fought and died to protect her,” said New York Republican Committee Chairman Ed Cox.

Cuomo is up for re-election this year. His Republican challenger, Marc Molinaro said that Cuomo “owes the nation an apology.” Unsurprisingly, President Trump weighed in, tweeting that Cuomo was having a “total meltdown.”

All the furor leads me to wonder, at which moment in history did America become great for African Americans?

Was it during the 1700s when our ancestors were kidnapped, shackled, and sold off? Despite Ben Carson’s delusional depiction of slaves as “immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less” the 1700s were kind of horrific for black people.

Perhaps some may think the 1800s were great for African Americans, because, hey, slavery ended. Ending the practice of human beings as chattel is a pretty low bar for achieving “greatness.” Also, slavery’s end was the beginning of decades of hell for black folk in the form of Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan, lynchings, voter intimidation, abject poverty, the Black Codes…etcetera, etcetera.

Was the 20th century when America finally became great for people of color? There certainly were moments of greatness. FDR’s New Deal provided unprecedented assistance to African Americans. The NAACP was formed. And, the iconic civil rights movement forever changed the conversation about race in America.

Yet, all of the above-mentioned things had to happen because life still sucked for black people.

National greatness eludes us even today. In the 21st century, prison is the new plantation. African Americans are incarcerated at five times the rate of whites (and in some states, at 10 times the rate).

The racial wealth gap is a subject we cover extensively at Black Enterprise. Although more blacks now own businesses (in fact, black-owned businesses increased by a rate of 400% this year) and are attaining higher education, the racial wealth gap is not narrowing. In 2016, according to the Census Bureau, the median income for white American households was $ 63,041 in stark contrast to black households at $ 39,490.

Even when we are gainfully employed, climbing the corporate ladder, African Americans are paid less for doing the same work as whites. Black women are paid approximately 63 cents on the dollar earned by a white man even at an equal educational level.

You would think after all the trials and tribulations African Americans have overcome and faced, they would at least let us protest injustice peacefully. NFL players have been a particular bane of the President’s, even calling those that kneel in protest “sons of b*tches.” His supporters often make the same collective jeer; “They make millions, they have nothing to protest!”

OK, black unemployment is at a historical low. That’s got to be a plus-one for a great America. The black unemployment rate is something Trump and his supporters keep touting as a reason America is great for black Americans.

Yet, whether that faction is screaming that NFL players should ‘just stick to football and enjoy your millions,’ or claiming blacks owe allegiance to Trump because of the unemployment rate, it sounds they are less concerned about this country being great for African Americans, but more that we should be grateful for whatever gains we make here.

I am going to take a hard pass on the suggestion that America is great for everyone. In their indignant pre-midterm election apoplexy, Cuomo’s critics are ignoring the entirety of his statement, “We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.”

It’s important we don’t deem America great just yet. Once greatness is achieved, there is no further ascent to be made, nothing more to improve, no reason to keep striving. There is much that is great about our country, but so much more work to be done to truly achieve liberty and justice for all.

The best place in America to buy a vacation home

Ever considered buying a vacation home? They’re not for everyone, and some of us definitely can’t afford one. However, if you’ve got the money going spare, buying one of these might be a worthy investment. There are a lot of benefits that come with pouring your money into a home away from home, but what location do you pick? Somewhere by the coast, or up in the mountains? Do you get a place in the center of town or more on the outskirts? You don’t need to keep worrying about the questions, because we’ve found the answers.

Where to set your sights

If you’re in the market for a vacation home, then there’s one place you need to check out – Panama City Beach in Florida. Just one look at this place should make you fall in love. The white beaches, clear water, and gorgeous weather are the perfect combination for any vacation. Whenever you need to get away from the world for some relaxation, Panama City Beach has got you covered.

While it’s an ideal vacation spot for some time in the sun, that’s not the only reason why you need to buy yourself a second home here.

Renting it out

When you purchase a vacation home, you don’t intend on staying there all the time. You might go there a few weeks a year or, if you live nearby, take trips there at the weekend. Apart from that, though, the house will remain empty. If you’ve got a savvy business mind, you’ll know that this is the perfect opportunity to turn your new vacation property into a money maker.

Many people rent out there vacation homes during the weeks and months when they’re not staying there. It prevents the house from being abandoned for too long and at risk of being broken into. Plus, it’s a great way of bringing in some extra income. You’ve shelled out money for this new house, so you need it to start paying for itself.

Why is Panama City Beach the best place to do this over everywhere else, though?

Future investment

Simply put, Panama City Beach has the highest return on investment for rental properties compared to everywhere else in the country. The cost of renting out a house compares favorably to the cost of owning it, which means it’s worth keeping it on the market. Moreover, Panama City Beach is incredibly popular with tourists, especially when spring break season comes around. People flock to the area to take advantage of its gorgeous weather and great atmosphere, so there’s an almost constant need for somewhere to stay throughout the year. If you own one of the properties in the area, you’d likely have someone staying there constantly.

Moving to Florida

Even if Panama City Beach isn’t right for you, there’s probably somewhere in the Sunshine State worth investing in. On a list of the best 150 rental cities in the country, Florida appears more than any other state in the top 25. It’s the best place in the United States for beach vacations, which is why rental properties here are such a hot commodity. If you think you’re ready to hire out your new vacation home to other tourists, this may well be the place for you. The income that your investment brings in will be more than worth it.

If you haven’t already started looking for vacation homes to purchase in Panama City Beach, what are you waiting for? Not only will you find a new place to stay in a beautiful part of the country, but you’ll also have an amazing investment property on your hands. It’s a win-win situation.

The United States is the only industrialized country where the rates of maternal deaths have increased, instead of decreased. Killer Nazi Puppets Terrorize America in the Most Batshit-Insane Movie of the Year

RLJE Films

Puppets are creepy. But they’re even worse when they’re Nazis.

Consequently, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich should be 2018’s runaway winner in the least likable villain department—and also in the most ludicrous villain department (not to mention in the most bizarre reboot department). Because as genre aficionados will undoubtedly know, Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund’s horror film, in theaters and on VOD August 17, provides a fresh start to producer/director/mastermind Charles Band’s Puppet Master franchise—which began with David Schmoeller’s 1989 original, and now includes twelve installments in total, if one is generous enough to count 2004’s (non-canonical!) TV crossover effort Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys.

Given that prodigious lineage, you’re undoubtedly wondering to yourself, “Do I have to watch the first dozen Puppet Master movies to understand The Littlest Reich?” Rest assured, fellow gorehounds, you do not. While featuring many of the famous puppets from Brand’s predecessors, Laguna and Wiklund’s film (released under the Fangoria label) rewrites the saga’s origins for an all-new stand-alone tale that anyone can comprehend from the outset. To be sure, enjoying The Littlest Reich does require that viewers have a fondness for ethnically intolerant homicidal toys. But then, who doesn’t?

What’s At Stake in the Fight to Save SCOTUS and Voting Rights in America

As Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh continues to make rounds of congressional courtesy calls seeking support, civil rights groups have been turning up the heat to push the U.S. Senate to either “press pause on the nomination” or reject President Trump’s pick outright. To achieve that end, representatives from such organizations—The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, National Urban League, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, National Council of Asian Pacific Americans and Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)—are rallying their multicultural constituencies to speak out. Under the banner, “#WhatsAtStake for Voting Rights in SCOTUS Fight,” this collective held a press briefing Monday to strongly communicate how Kavanaugh’s addition to the conservative-leaning high court would further undermine the franchise of people of color.

With midterms less than five months away and the 2020 presidential election in the wings, the civil rights leaders asserted that the stakes couldn’t be higher. “We consider his nomination an immediate threat to our community’s right to vote that is already under daring attacks,” says Suzanne Bergeron, senior director of civil rights and workforce policy for NUL, one of several organizations urging voters to call their senators in an effort to halt the confirmation process. “Having Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court to rule on voter rights cases could leave African-American voters even more vulnerable to voter intimidation and added suppressive tactics that negatively impact black voter turnout.”

The rapidly changing voter demographics have added intensity to this battle. “I will remind that the U.S. electorate is diversifying racially and ethnically at warp speed. Last year was the country’s most racially and ethnically diverse electorate ever, with nearly one in three eligible voters on election day being a person of color,” says Janai Nelson, associate director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. “And the 2018 and 2020 elections promise to continue this trend with voters of colors comprising 44% of millennial voters, which is the largest generation of eligible voters.”

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference, which organized the call, argued that the Senate “must demand the release and full review of Kavanaugh’s records.” Declaring that “if confirmed, Kavanaugh would undermine voting rights enforcement in our nation,” she cited one of the decisions he made in his role as a judge of the D.C. Court of Appeals. In 2011, he wrote an opinion upholding South Carolina’s voter ID law that the Department of Justice had blocked, deeming the measure as being discriminatory to minorities in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

“He refused to include language put forward by the other judges on the panel that acknowledged the critical role of the Voting Rights Act in preventing racial discrimination in voting,” she said. “It is telling and troubling that Kavanaugh refused to recognize the importance of the historic Voting Rights Act. Kavanaugh backed the spurious claim that the voter ID law would prevent voter fraud. But given that South Carolina could not produce any evidence of fraud, it’s clear the law’s real purpose was to suppress voting, plain and simple. What we know so far about Kavanaugh’s record is that he has been a partisan, politician operative. So we need to know more.”

Gupta, along with the group, also raised concerns about the nominee based on the track record of Trump’s previous Supreme Court appointment Justice Neil Gorsuch, who served as “the fifth and deciding vote in two devastating anti-voting rights decisions. One decision allowed voter purging in Ohio and the other upheld racial gerrymandering in Texas.”

Even before the Trump administration came to power, the Supreme Court tilted right in such cases. With the 5-4 decision in Shelby v. Holder in 2013, the court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act that stripped the law’s formula to require all or jurisdictions of states with a history of electoral discrimination—many of them located in the South—to get “pre-cleared” by the federal government before making any adjustments to voting laws.

“It is quite clear that we are at a critical point in time in our history of defense of civil rights. For the last five years, because of Congress’ failure to act following the decision in Shelby County by the Supreme Court…we are evaluating proposals to change voting rights laws in important regions across the country,” Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of MALDEF, said. “Without pre-clearance, we are left with federal court as the last resort to ensure that our laws reflect the constitutional rights of every individual who is eligible to vote.”

Nelson agrees: “Voting rights protect every other right we enjoy and it is essential that the next Supreme Court justice has a clear commitment to protecting access to the ballot box.”

This past week, Jason Spencer, a Republican state representative from Georgia, revealed that Sacha Baron Cohen had tricked him into shouting “provocative language” during what he thought was a real anti-terrorism training video. Now we know that “provocative language” was the N-word.

The shouting of racial slurs by Spencer, who was recently defeated in a GOP primary after serving four controversial terms, was just one of several unnerving moments from the most outrageous segment in the second episode of Showtime’s Who Is America? Week two of this news-making show also featured former Vice President Dick Cheney signing a “waterboard kit,” Ted Koppel arguing about the size of Donald Trump’s inauguration crowd and The Bachelor’s Corinne Olympios gamely pretending that she helped clean up the Ebola crisis in Africa.

In last week’s premiere, we saw some pretty gullible gun rights advocates fall for Baron Cohen’s deception. But even arguing that toddlers should be armed with guns is nothing compared to the behavior the comedian elicited from Spencer, admittedly a far less prominent and powerful figure than people like Cheney or Bernie Sanders.

Hotels in America that are most dog friendly

Taking a vacation can be great, but seeing our four-legged friend’s face at the doors as we head off with our packed bags can be heartbreaking. So why not bring them with you? Believe or not, several hotels now allow you to take your dogs, too. Now, we can enjoy our vacation with the entire family at the hotels in America that are most dog friendly.

The Peninsula, Beverly Hills

If you’re looking for the ultimate relaxation hotel for you and your dog than look no further. While you are enjoying the hotel’s rooftop pool and fancy cars on offer, your pooch can be soaking up a pawdicure or doggy massage. This is all before they choose a meal off the specialized dog menu that includes a dog-friendly burger or pooched salmon (gettit?). To top it all off, your little pup can enjoy all of this from the comfort of their complimentary dog bed.

W South Beach, Miami

The Sunshine State is famous for just that – its incredible weather. So if you’re looking to soak up the rays and want your best friend there for the ride, this could be the hotel for you. The W South Beach hotel has everything you could need for your furry friends, including litter boxes, leashes, and pet beds. Plus the beach is just a short walk away meaning the entire family can enjoy fun in the sun. If you need some time to yourself, the hotel can also arrange pet sitters or dog walkers to keep your pooch company.

Aloft, Asheville

This could possibly be doggy heaven. “Why?” we hear you scream? Sit back and let us explain. The hotel has added artificial grass over the entire rooftop to create its own puppy path to explore. Plus, Aloft also works with the local pooch bakery that can deliver fresh-baked local treats right to your room. As if that wasn’t enough, the hotel is also located right next to a variety of mountain walks as well as many dog-friendly restaurants meaning you never have to be parted from your companion.

Topnotch Resort, Stowe

The Topnotch Resort is perfect for those looking to give their dogs an outdoor adventure teamed with a chance to relax and unwind. Not only can you take it all the sights and sounds of the local hiking trails, but you could also sign your dog up for a spa treatment or Reiki massage. As if that wasn’t enough, the hotel has a range of dog-friendly baked goods available to snack on after all the adventures of the day. Don’t feel left out, the Topnotch Resort has plenty of treatments available for owners, too!

W Hotel, Scottsdale

There is no stopping these American Dog-friendly hotels. The W Hotel runs doggy yoga as well as pooch boot camp classes to get you and your little friend active. Plus, they are greeted with an exclusive welcome pack that includes treats, a toy, and a dog tag as well as a letter explaining all the pet-friendly activities in the area. If you head down to San Francisco, you could also enjoy another hotel in the chain that even offers up bedtime doggy beer!

These hotels in America that are the most dog friendly almost sound too good to be true. In fact, it seems as though our four-legged friends will have an even better time than we will. No longer do we have to worry about waving goodbye to our pooches; they are part of the family too and should be there for all those special memories!

The best beaches in America to head to for the summer

Ahhhh, the American summer. Does it get much better than sitting in the sun with a good book to read, a cold Coca-Cola in your hands, and a view of the sea in front of you? We think not. However, those who don’t live by the sea will know just how irritating it is when people say things like that last sentence (oops, sorry). However, we think it’s about time you packed up your car, filled up your tank, and took a trip across America to check out some of the most beautiful beaches this wonderful country has to offer. We won’t take no for an answer!

Coronado Beach, San Diego – California

California is famous for its beaches, and it’s really hard to single them out because they’re just that good! However, if we had to pick, the Coronado Beach in San Diego is one of the coolest beaches in the state. With year-round sun and hot temperatures, it’s the perfect place to just go and chill on your day off. As if that wasn’t cool enough, the surf here is unlike any other beach around. So, grab your board and ride the waves – and then dry off on the sand after!

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin – Florida

Have you ever wanted to chill out on a private island? The Caladesi Island State Park gives you that opportunity. Visitors can access the golden sands through a shuttle ferry, or you could even walk it if you’re feeling particularly energetic that day – and the end result will truly blow you away. For a minute you’ll forget that you’re in the United States and think that you’ve been transported Down Under. However, we can confirm that you will just be in Florida! A very beautiful part of Florida.

Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island – South Carolina

If you’re the kind of person that likes to go to the beach and get active, the Beachwalker Park in Kiawah Island will be for you. Although it’s not the kind of place you’ll want to sit and sunbathe, this beach is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. In fact, you might even be able to incorporate the two! Why not grab your paddle board and float atop the beautiful water while looking out for rare birds and wildlife? I mean, you don’t get much better than that.

Hapuna Beach State Park, Big Island – Hawaii

You know the screensavers that don’t look real? Well, the Hapuna Beach State Park beach is basically one of those. To look at, this beach just doesn’t look like it really exists, and you might be wondering if you’re hallucinating. Yet, we can confirm that the beautiful golden sand that is in front of you is not just a figment of your imagination. With the green backdrop, the palm trees, the crystal clear waters and the blue eyes, you will get a true taste of Hawaiian life… and we want seconds.

Coopers Beach, Southampton – New York

When you think of New York, you probably think of the Big Apple with its bright lights and bustling streets. Because of this, many people forget that New York is a whole state with little towns, villages, and beaches. One of the best beaches in New York has to be Coopers Beach in Southampton. With incredible dunes, luscious beach grass and rocking waves, this beach is the perfect haven for checking out the surf or just enjoying the sun.

Are you looking to check out what beaches America has to offer this summer? Well, look no further, because we’ve got your back!

How ‘Cloak & Dagger’ is Boldly Tackling Social Issues in America

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is one of the most compelling new shows to come out of the superhero genre. Rather than deal with a villain of the week, the series is focused on very the real issues faced by the two teenage protagonists Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt). It’s these social issues that are drawing fans to care for these fledgling heroes as they try to cope with everyday life and grapple with their newfound powers.

FANDOM also had the chance to sit down the creators of Cloak & Dagger. Marvel TV President Jeph Loeb, Director Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Showrunner Joe Pokaski discuss why its so important for this show, in particular, to embrace these real-world issues.

“That’s how we define a hero. People who stand up to fight for issues when everyone else is sitting down. Whether or not they are teenagers or the Avengers, Marvel heroes are the same.” – Loeb

After experiencing an accident as children, Tyrone and Tandy are given powers: he the ability to teleport using a cloak of darkness and she the ability to create daggers made of light. The same night they gain their powers, each loses an important family member, setting the events of the show into motion and leaving lasting emotional scars. Tandy and Tyrone’s powers manifest in times of crisis, leading them confront their trauma and their connection to the other.

“Tandy and Tyrone are going to be heroes, the way the Parkland students are standing up. They are going to fight for the world the way it should be.” – Pokaski

Here are some of the grounded issues Cloak & Dagger tackles that make it way more than just a traditional superhero show.

Black Lives Matter

Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson

Cloak & Dagger is not afraid to tackle tough issues head on. In one of first scenes of the pilot, “First Light”, Tyrone watches his older brother Billy (Marqus Clae) get shot by a white police officer. The young black man is unarmed, holding only a car radio stolen by the young Tyrone (Maceo Smedley) in a show of bravado.

“I think we’re in an era where the police are looking at people differently.” – Pokaski

The event haunts Tyrone as he grows older and comes to define the Johnson family. As the only surviving child, Tyrone’s parents are overbearing and he in turn is crushed under the weight of needing to be perfect and well behaved in order to survive. He is also secretly hellbent on getting revenge on the officer, Detective Connors (J.D. Evermore) who shot his brother.

In using such a topical and important issue as the main focus of the show, Cloak & Dagger is helping to bring light to the issue of young black men being killed by police officers. The death of Billy is used as the emotional core of the first episode and continues throughout the early episodes of the series, proving it is not just a one time issue, but one with a lasting impact that affects families and communities.

Race in America

Tyrone Johnson played by Aubrey Joseph

Other superhero shows like Black Lightning and Luke Cage have dealt with the issues of race, but Cloak & Dagger takes a unique angle. The Johnson family is an affluent black family; Tyrone attends private school. The New Orleans setting also adds another layer to the story, with the city’s rich history woven into the story of Tyrone and his relationship with his father.

“I wanted to separate race and socioeconomic structure. Tyrone, despite the fact that he’s wealthy, he has the weight of the world on his shoulders.” – Pokaski

Tyrone is faced with racism on a daily basis. His basketball teammates attack and insult him, making him work all even to prove he belongs. He is judged by his appearance as a young, black male and has to hide his anger and frustrations, especially when trying to find out more information on Detective Connors. On the surface Tyrone appears to be the perfect son and student, but it is this rage combined with his powers of darkness that make him such a compelling character.

Addiction

Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowen

The same night Tyrone’s brother was killed, Tandy lost her father in a car accident. His death left the family with nothing forcing Tandy and her mother Melissa (Andrea Roth) to leave their upper class lifestyle behind. Tandy’s grief-stricken mother turns to drugs as an escape and neglects her daughter in the process. Tandy is forced to take care of herself, even going as far as leaving home and living on her own in an abandoned church. Tandy too turns to drugs for comfort, running cons on wealthy men to steal their money in order to score.

“What we’re dealing with, in terms of themes, we wanted the authenticity.” – Prince-Bythewood

However, Cloak & Dagger makes it clear that Melissa is not the villain of the story. She is a woman clearly still reeling from the loss of her husband and stuck living in the past. There are some bright moments between mother and daughter, making their relationship all the more complicated. Tandy and her mother are stuck in a cycle of hurting themselves and each other to escape the very real pain of their current situation. Both use drugs as a coping mechanism. It’s sadly a very realistic portrayal of two individuals struggling with loss.

Sexual Assault

Olivia Holt plays Tandy Bowen aka Dagger

Another one of the major issues Cloak & Dagger tackles early on is sexual assault. One night Tandy robs a rich guy, only to have him attack her in an alley in retaliation. Before anything can happen, Tandy’s powers appear to protect her and she is able to fend off her attacker. However, the encounter leaves her shaken and confused in more ways than one. It’s a scary scene and one that could have gone much differently if not for her abilities.

“I wish this show was on five years ago. It’s great to see a woman as a superhero.” – Pokaski

It is not unfamiliar territory to use a woman’s trauma to bring about the awakening of some sort of powers. However, Cloak & Dagger sensitively handles the idea of a young woman being assaulted and the process of recovery. Tandy is a true survivor and her struggles are not easy ones. Both Tandy and Tyrone have both faced incredible amounts of trauma and their bond is only made stronger by their shared experiences.

Cloak & Dagger mixes impressive visuals with strong character based drama that makes it unlike any other superhero show on TV. With a focus on real issues the show is a realistic portrayal of what it is like to be a teenager today- albeit one who has to deal with superpowers as well as peer pressure.

Cloak & Dagger currently airs on Freeform, Thursdays at 8PM.

‘Pirate,’ Priest, and Korean Prisoner of War Emil Kapaun Embodied America the Beautiful

Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast

As we come to Memorial Day with at least the hope of a resolution with North Korea, we should remember U.S. Army Chaplain Emil Kapaun, who as a POW looked more like an eye-patched pirate than a priest, yet is credited with saving literally hundreds of lives with the pure power of spirit.

On a wartime Easter Sunday more than six decades ago, Kapaun caused an entire valley to fill with the voices of his fellow prisoners singing “America the Beautiful.” He posthumously received the Medal of Honor and is presently being considered for sainthood. The nephew who accepted the belated medal on his behalf in 2013 is certain Kapaun would be particularly pleased that there is now at least a chance of peace at long last.

“Wouldn’t that be something?” the nephew, Ray Emil Kapaun, told The Daily Beast on Friday. “That would be incredible. Without a doubt that would be good.”

Sabika Sheikh Came to America for an Education, Then She Was Murdered in School

Akhtar Soomro/Reuters

SANTA FE, Texas—Sabika Sheikh came to the United States to learn about American culture as part of a State Department-funded scholarship program.

On Friday, Sheikh fell victim to a gruesome American tradition, massacred with nine others at school by a gun-wielding classmate.

This time it was at Santa Fe High School near Houston, Texas. Among the victims were two popular substitute teachers, Ann Perkins and Cynthia Tisdale, as well as 16-year-old Shana Fisher, whose mother said the alleged shooter “kept making advances” at her daughter, Los Angeles Times reported.

Black Congressional Caucus Reveals ‘Marshall Plan for Black America’ Amid Racial Strife

Being deemed the “Marshall Plan for Black America,” the 1,334-page Jobs and Justice Act, introduced by the Congressional Black Caucus last Thursday, addresses a wide range of issues—from massive investments in infrastructure and workforce development training to promotion of economic empowerment, to comprehensive reform of the nation’s criminal justice system.

The legislation is a compilation of sorts of free-standing bills proposed by the 48-member caucus, and although it is highly unlikely to be passed in a Republican-controlled Congress, they told USA Today that they wanted to “lay out a blueprint of their priorities” for now in the hopes that Democrats win the majority in November.

DETAILS OF THE BILL:

The omnibus legislation is two-pronged: jobs and justice. Division A—the jobs division of the bill includes several provisions to advance economic opportunity in underserved communities including infrastructure investment, workforce development, and poverty alleviation measures. It also includes support for small businesses and economic development, housing and asset building provision, as well as investments in education.

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While Dr. King is well known for his efforts to champion social justice issues, he and many other civil rights activists of the day fought for economic justice as well. In addition to voting rights and equal protections under the law, every man, woman, and child deserves equal access to economic opportunities. Sadly, Dr. King’s Dream was never fully realized. Major social justice advancements in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 were followed by massive disinvestment in Black communities and a war on drugs that led to the mass incarceration of Black men and women — Cedric L. Richmond (LA-02), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The bill’s Division B includes comprehensive criminal justice reform, from policing reform, marijuana decriminalization, sentencing reform, prison reform, and provisions to remove  the collateral consequences that make it difficult for the formerly incarcerated “to become productive members of society.” It also includes measures to protect access to the ballot.

Additionally, African Americans continue to seek equal protections under the law. In the wake of the gutting of the Voting Rights Act, Black voters have been targeted by voter suppression efforts with “almost surgical precision.” Moreover, Black families have been devastated by America’s scourge of mass incarceration. African Americans are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of Whites. In addition, although African Americans make up 13 percent of the national population, they make up 40 percent of the prison population. The criminal justice system traps low-income and minority families in a cycle of devastation, from broken bonds between police and the communities they serve, to overwhelming obstacles for those who have paid their debts to society — Cedric L. Richmond (LA-02).

“A lot of folks talk the talk when it comes to African American communities, but few walk the walk,” said Richmond. “This bill will give them the chance to walk that walk.”

The bill is a take on the original Marshall Plan—an aid package the United States provided to Western Europe after those countries’ economies were devastated by World War II. The plan was named after George C, Marshall, the Secretary of State at the time.

6 beautiful scenic train rides in America

If your goal is to get from one place to another as fast as possible, then a train is not your best bet. But if your goal is the journey, rather than just the destination, then trains are the way to go. The dreaminess of railway travel will take your breath away and is the best way to see America’s most beautiful scenery.  Here are some of the best rides.

Cascades

The Cascades train goes from Eugene Oregon to Vancouver, British Columbia and is a 156 mile, four-hour ride. Its name most certainly matches up with its views. From Eugene to Seattle it is mostly evergreen forests, and then once the train hits Puget Sound, passengers get an unbeatable view of the Olympic Mountains. This ride is a moving postcard.

Cass Scenic Railroad

The eight mile Cass Scenic Railroad which goes through West Virginia is not called almost heaven for nothing.  The scenery on this ride is completely stunning.  The train is the original locomotive that was once used to transport lumber to mining camps. Today it takes passengers up a four-mile slope with unique views of the mountains below.  Whittaker Station is found at the top of the ride, which is a restored logging camp. It is most recommended to go in October when the fall colors are out.

California Zephyr

The California Zephyr train goes from Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California, covering a distance of 2,438 miles. To do the entire route, and retrace the path of trail pioneers who settled in the West, it takes over 50 hours. It starts in Denver and goes through the Rocky Mountains, the red rocks of Utah, the Sierras, Donner Pass and then San Francisco Bay. It’s a great way to cover the West without renting an RV.

White Pass & Yukon Route

The White Pass & Yukon Route will probably have you wondering who was bold enough to build this cliff-drop railway in 1898. The train leaves from Skagway, Alaska in three different paths, however, all take you 3,000ft down mountain lakes, glaciers, and waterfalls. This trip goes down the path of the original miner’s supply route.  It’s not suggested for those with a fear of heights.

Cape Cod Central Railroad

The Cape Cod Central Railroad offers a ride through the salt marshes, cranberry bogs, oceanfront trails and cute towns. They offer an option of an information sightseeing tour or a dinner train with fine dining prepared on board. Both options take passengers through areas of Cape Cod that can’t be seen any other way.

Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon is a legendary American landmark that you will inevitably always get stuck in traffic while visiting. That’s why taking this 130 mile round trip train that leaves from Williams is your best bet. It begins in Northern Arizona in the pine forests and then goes into a high desert. The ride also goes through the San Francisco Peaks before getting to the Grand Canyon.

The 10 Most Diverse Cities in America (and the 10 Least Diverse)

If you live in one of these places, you live in three of the most diverse cities in America: Jersey City, NJ; Houston, and New York. That ranking is from a new report from WalletHub, a personal finance and credit website. Jersey City is the most diverse city in the country with New York City and Houston; the 2nd and 3rd most diverse.

The other most cities on the top 10 list of most diverse cities in America (in descending order) are:

Silver Spring, Maryland

Dallas, Texas

Gaithersburg, Maryland

Los Angeles, California

Germantown, Maryland

Long Beach, California

Arlington, Texas

The study looked at five key diversity factors for cities to determine rankings: socioeconomic diversity; cultural diversity; economic diversity; household diversity; and religious diversity. A city’s population, number of educated residents, and age of residents were some of the other weighing factors in the rankings.

WalletHub also asked several diversity experts to provide insight on the pros and cons of living in a very diverse city.

“Job opportunities,” was one of the benefits cited by Hilary Green, an associate professor of history in the department of gender and race studies, at the University of Alabama.

“Second, there is an increased quality of life through schools, jobs, green spaces, and cultural events,” stated Green. She said there are no cons to living in a diverse city, “except if the city structure does not embrace the diversity of its populace and [in] providing services and housing for all.”

Shari L. Parks, vice president for strategic initiatives at the Maryland Institute of Art (MICA) in Baltimore said, “Historically, racial and ethnic diversity has been tied to economic growth as people moved from monolithic communities to work in industrial places in the city.” Parks also commented, “Diversity drives innovation.”

However, “forced assimilation is very unhealthy for any community,” cautions Chiquita Howard-Bostic, chair of the department of sociology and geography and associate professor of sociology at Shepard University.

“When one expects another person to merge their cultural identity and divorce their own, there are a series of psychological and emotional events that follow,” says Howard-Bostic. She says “the pace for progress can never be predetermined.”

On the flip side, WalletHub also ranked the least diverse cities in America. They are, in descending order:

Huntington, West Virginia

Morgantown, West Virginia

Lewiston, Idaho

Kalispell, Montana

Barre, Vermont

Keene, New Hampshire

Rochester, New Hampshire

Orem, Utah

Provo, Utah

Bangor, Maine

Other key findings from the study:

  • Badger, Alaska, has the highest income diversity, which is 2.7 times higher than in Youngstown, Ohio, the city with the lowest.
  • Oakland, California, has the highest racial and ethnic diversity, which is four times higher than in Hialeah, Florida, the city with the lowest.
  • Thornton, Colorado, has the highest industry diversity, which is 2.7 times higher than in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the city with the lowest.
  • Hobbs, New Mexico, has the highest occupational diversity, which is 2.6 times higher than in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the city with the lowest.

See how your city ranks by viewing the entire list of rankings; read more expert analysis; and key findings from the report at WalletHub.

CNN’s ‘United Shades Of America with W. Kamau Bell’ Is Back And Ready to Listen

CNN’s Emmy Award-winning United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell is back on the air for its third season.

The eight-part docuseries follows the comedian as he visits communities around the country, deftly deploying his unique brand of humor to explore issues of race, history, and the lived experiences of people who don’t typically make the news. But even at moments that could have been profoundly confrontational, Bell has consistently delivered more light than heat, and a master class in having “uncomfortable conversations.”

This year, Bell says to expect more of the same.

“I think that Americans are tired of manufactured conflict,” he tells raceAhead. “This is not going to be a season of my sitting down with an evil villain or ‘bait and switches’,” the kind of drama television likes to provide. “This is going to be me talking to interesting people whose voices aren’t heard enough.”

There were some potentially villainous moments even in the first season, which began airing in 2016.

The series opened with “The New KKK,” in which Bell met with actual Klan members in full hooded regalia by the side of a dark, country road. He even attended a “cross-lighting.” In addition to being gutsy, it established Bell’s ability to manage substantive conversations with people who believe horrific things without flinching or pandering.

But it was a different time.

“We didn’t realize how lucky we were that [season one] happened during the last year of Obama,” he said, a time when white supremacy felt less like an active threat. “We could really pick and choose what we wanted to talk about then,” he says.

By the time that season two rolled around, it felt like the country was on fire.

“With Trump offending so many people and saying so many outrageous racist, sexist and ableist things, it was like the news was handing out homework assignments,” he says.

Bell talked to immigrants, refugees and advocates, explored Chicago gang violence, visited Muslims in small town America, and even headed to coal country. All vital stuff, but still a laundry list of Trumpian talking points. At some point, he says, “it got exhausting trying to keep up with the news.”

Bell, who may be best known for his comedy, has excelled in the real world, as he stepped away from the relative detachment of the stand-up stage to meet people where they are and as they are, in the middle of their sometimes messy lives.

It’s a transition that many who speak from a position of authority struggle to achieve.

Bell’s secret is empathy. “I’ve learned that the more I can make it clear to people that I’m there for them, that I’m lucky to be there with them, it works,” he says,”and not that they’re lucky to be on TV with me–no, no, no.” The crew have become adept at making regular folks feel comfortable. “We don’t put the show before someone’s feelings and concerns.”

And, as a comic who specializes in sociopolitical content, he also comes prepared. “The show has taught me that I have a pretty good capacity to sit and listen,” a necessary first step to participating a tough conversation. “Part of being a standup comic is being an active listener- reading the room and paying attention to everybody,” he says.

But that can be hard to swallow for some. Bell got some flack for his interview with white supremacist Richard Spencer, in part, for talking to him at all.

“Look, I’m not gonna act like I’m not always second guessing myself on everything,” he laughs. “But people complained that I was giving him a platform and normalizing him. I reject that wholeheartedly. These racist ideas are in the White House now, we have to talk about them.”

Part of his frustration is that the series is filmed well in advance, so much of the news about Spencer–like when the white nationalist got sucker-punched, for example–happened months after the United Shades crew had come and gone. “Look, I was never going to punch the guy, but I would have brought it up,” says Bell. And he’s braced for similar dissonance this year. “We did a whole thing about HBCUs without knowing that Beyonce was going to claim them at Coachella,” he laughs.

But as a long-form documentary series, Bell’s commitment to shrugging off a news peg is smart. “We can tweak a little bit later, but the story we want to tell is the story we get to tell.”

Bell mentions one upcoming episode that came about because of a Twitter conversation.

He was invited to Boston by Harpreet Singh, the founder and co-CEO of Experfy, a Harvard Innovation Lab-based big data consultancy, and co-founder of the Sikh Coalition, to talk about hate crimes experienced by Sikhs.

The interviews included many members of the Sikh community in Boston and Yuba City, Calif. It was hardly breaking news; it took six months for the segment to be complete, including fact-checking and editing. “It turns out that we made the first-ever hour of television talking about their faith, which wasn’t our plan,” says Bell. “These are just people who we don’t know but should.”

Here’s another thing that he’s thinking about as season three launches: The country is united by a lot of collective stress at the moment.

“We’re more aware of bad things when they happen,” he says, citing the immediate outcry over the killing of Stephon Clark, who was unarmed, by the Sacramento police.”That would not have been a national story even a few years ago.” While he concedes that’s some form of progress, “I do think we all have to figure out how to process these things.”

Giving back is the only way forward, he says.

“A key part of dealing with this era in America is figuring out what you can do — using your privilege or your dollars or your free time to help.” A little goes a long way. “I’m a big fan of Donor’s Choose,” a non-profit that lets people pay for supplies on wish lists posted by classroom teachers. “It’s a little thing I can do where I feel I’m being productive even when I get caught up in the malaise of life.”

The show returns April 29 at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT.

Will Bucky Become the New Captain America in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Black Panther. Proceed with caution.

Bucky Barnes is a fan favorite when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His conversion into the Winter Soldier and then rescue by Captain America has made him a tragic and redemptive character. And he’s continued to be an important focal point for the larger story that the MCU is carrying out.

But, with Avengers: Infinity War promising to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, fans are beginning to speculate that Steve Rogers might not make it out alive. And if he doesn’t, will another character take up the mantle of Captain America? If so, will Bucky be that successor?

This theory certainly has merit. Heck, it’s already happened once before.

The Death of Captain America

captain america death
In the comics, the death of Steve Rogers led to Bucky taking over as Captain America.

In 2007, Marvel Comics was ending its huge event series Civil War. In the aftermath of that enormous showdown, Steve Rogers turned himself over to the authorities. He is assassinated under the orders of the Red Skull and dies on the steps of a courthouse. It was a huge moment in both the comics and the real world. Professional news outlets broadcast the story of Cap’s death, much like they did back in 1993 when DC Comics killed off Superman.

Following Cap’s death, Bucky Barnes — who had only recently been revealed to be the Winter Soldier — proceeded to take over as Captain America with a brand new suit that was built by Tony Stark. So, if Avengers: Infinity War follows the same path as the comics, this could easily be the way Bucky’s story goes.

Or, is there another contender for the shield?

Falcon

captain america falcon
Falcon has also taken over as Captain America during certain runs in the comics.

Another character who has taken up the identity of Captain America in the comics is none other than Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon. He’s been a part of the MCU for nearly as many films as Bucky has. His friendship with Steve Rogers and his dedication to the ideals Steve holds dear have been a vital part of Sam’s story. If he does end up taking over as Captain America, it would be just as justified as Bucky stepping into the role.

Not to mention it would be a symbolic bit of representation for a black man to take over as the symbol of America. And with Black Panther‘s resounding success at the box office, it’s clear that audiences are ready to see that kind of diversity in their superhero movies.

Plus, it’s possible that Bucky might be taking on a very different identity in the future…

White Wolf

bucky black panther white wolf
At the end of ‘Black Panther,’ Bucky is given a very important nickname.

At the end of Black Panther, we see that Bucky has been recuperating in Wakanda under the care of T’Challa’s sister Shuri. He has begun to regain his memory and the effects of his brainwashing seem to have been nullified. During this scene, a group of Wakandan children called him White Wolf. That’s a name with some serious significance.

In the comics, White Wolf is the adoptive son of T’Chaka and the leader of a secret Wakandan police force tasked with carrying out covert and deadly missions. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe decides to do their own version of White Wolf, it could involve Bucky becoming a protector of Wakanda in a role very similar to White Wolf’s in the comics.

It certainly seems that way. Wakanda has taken care of him and if he is getting his memories and personality reprogrammed, it’s possible he will gain an even deeper affection for the African nation. We see him leading the charge with Wakandan soldiers in the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War. And it looks like Shuri is outfitting him with a brand new vibranium arm.

If I were betting money, I’d say that’s where Bucky will end up. But, we could also see him don the red, white, and blue if Cap does bite the dust. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters around the globe on April 27.

A Decades-Old Murder Investigation Exposes the Ugly Truth About Racism in America

Grasshopper Film

Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun? is, in the words of director Travis Wilkerson, a “white nightmare story.” And indeed, the sensation of watching Wilkerson’s film is not unlike experiencing a nightmare, complete with ghosts and the feeling of being slowly subsumed by an awful, unresolved evil. Though the story is his, it’s also a reflection of America’s past and present, and the parts of American history that are so often glossed over in favor of a cleaner, more wholesome picture.

In 1946, S.E. Branch, Wilkerson’s great-grandfather, murdered Bill Spann. Branch was charged with murder, but nothing came of it. He was never convicted, never jailed. In other words, he got away with it. The reason why: Spann was black.

In the intervening years, the story became a family legend, hidden away and rarely discussed. So why has Wilkerson chosen to unearth it all now? As he explains at the beginning of his film, it had been on his mind in the wake of Trayvon Martin’s murder, as the outcome of the case mirrored what he’d heard about his great-grandfather. Once again, a killer had gotten off scot-free. Placed throughout Wilkerson’s film are interstitials featuring the names of black men and women (among them, Sean Bell and Sandra Bland, each accompanied with the plea to say their name) who were killed with virtually no repercussions. The case of S.E. Branch and Bill Spann isn’t an isolated incident nor is it a product of the times: It’s still happening today.

How Angels in America First Reminded the World That ‘Plays Can Matter’

When Angels in America returns to Broadway on Friday, in a production starring Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, it will encounter a very different world from the one in which the play debuted around 25 years ago. In the intervening years, HIV and AIDS — the crisis around which so much of the Tony Kushner epic revolves — ceased to be the “death sentence” they once were, and the LGBTQ community won major political victories across the United States and elsewhere. But, as Nathan Lane recently told TIME, that doesn’t mean the play doesn’t still have meaningful lessons for the world of 2018.

That political side has always been part of what makes Angels so significant in the history of American theater. TIME’s William A. Henry III first reviewed the play in late 1992, after it had already debuted in San Francisco, won awards in London and run in Los Angeles all before its 1993 Broadway opening. Though he found some of the acting “bland,” it was clear from his review that there was a reason why Angels was making such waves:

The central visual image of this season’s most eagerly awaited American play is a towering wall, like the facade of some Greek Revival government colossus, with two jagged cracks running from top to bottom. Before a word is spoken, this symbol — with its promise of that facade’s eventually cracking wide open — conveys the aura of physical decay and revolutionary social change that drives Tony Kushner’s 7 1/2-hr. epic about AIDS, gay liberation and the breakdown of the Reagan era’s sanctimonious hypocrisy…

Henry explained that one of the main reasons behind the anticipation for Angels in America was that the play represented a new era in the cultural depiction of gay life: “The author and the delighted spectators reflect an evolution in attitude akin to what happened among blacks and women: one generation sought empathy; the next demanded justice; the generation equivalent to Kushner’s just flat-out asserted equality and spurned any more debate.”

Get your history fix in one place: sign up for the weekly TIME History newsletter

Henry returned to the play about a year later, to cover the Broadway production, now complete with both parts, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika. Its box-office success — despite the early days of the Perestroika production being mired in behind-the-scenes drama ranging from rewrites to what Henry called “stagehand mania” — had defied any fears that the subject matter would only appeal to a niche audience.

And it was, as the piece noted, “hugely significant”:

More than any other work in a theater era of gay self-assertion, it has brought that perspective to the mainstream. Angels was not only the first gay-centered play to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama, it came to the fore just as the argument about gays in the military was putting the gay cause at center stage for the first time in U.S. history. With its aggressive scorn for Ronald Reagan and Republicanism; for Mormons and moralizing; and its demonic view of lawyer-dealmaker Roy Cohn, a gay-bashing closet gay and a top-level G.O.P. influence peddler for more than three decades, Angels disproved truisms about the unmarketability of political drama. Instead it compellingly reasserted the theater’s place in public debate. Hearteningly to theater partisans, Angels generated excitement about a drama comparable to the biggest buzz about musicals. Above all, Angels demonstrated that plays can matter in a pop culture dominated by electronically recorded performances rather than live ones.

That was why, despite the show’s rocky road to the stage and any nitpicking that might be done over the script or acting — Henry, for example, found the second part too quick to declaim its theories about the world, rather than letting the audience arrive at those conclusions — the team behind it only expressed pleasure with the result.

”When we look back on this in five or 10 years, we are not going to remember our exasperation at the script coming in late or how much money it cost,” Rocco Landesman, president of the theater-ownership group financing the 1993 production, told TIME back then. “We are going to remember that we are the producers of Angels in America, the most important play in a generation.”

America Just Got a Lot Closer to Seeing a Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Aaron P. Bernstein

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court released a new congressional map for the Keystone state on Monday afternoon and in the process gave Democrats a likely major boost in their efforts to win back control of the House of Representatives this fall.

The redrawn map—which was offered as a legally-mandated fix to the heavily gerrymandered prior lines—reshapes the state such that, according to Cook Political Report’s Dave Wasserman, there are now eight Hillary Clinton districts and ten Donald Trump districts. President Trump won the state in the 2016 election by less than one percentage point. There are currently five seats held by Democrats and 12 by Republicans, with one vacant.

The map is likely to be the most significant mid-term election development until the actual election itself, seriously enhancing the likelihood that Nancy Pelosi regains her gavel as Speaker. For that, and other reasons, it is also likely to draw a legal challenge from Republicans in the state.

Slack Names One of the Most Powerful Women in Corporate America, Edith Cooper, to Its Board

Edith Cooper, the former executive vice president and global head of human capital at Goldman Sachs has been added to Silicon Valley company Slack’s board, according to a blog post from Slack’s CEO Stewart Butterfield. Cooper is also on Black Enterprise’s most recent list of the “300 Most Powerful Executives in Corporate America.” Additionally, she is set to speak at this year’s Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit.

From Butterfield’s post:

I’m excited to announce that we are adding a second independent member to our Board of Directors. Edith Cooper joins us after more than 30 years of experience building successful teams in major organizations. Most recently, Edith served as the Global Head of Human Capital Management at Goldman Sachs, which means she oversaw everything related to talent and teams for a company of more than 30,000 people—from recruiting and retention to creating and sustaining a healthy culture. She has an unrivaled depth of experience in the hardest challenges that modern organizations face, and Edith is going to be a huge asset as we continue to expand our capabilities. She is a deep thinker, a good listener, and a wise strategist, and I’m thrilled to have her join us as Slack enters its next phase of growth.

Slack is a startup that offers cloud-based instant messaging and collaboration. TechCrunch named it the best startup of 2017. The company is estimated to have a valuation of $ 9 billion. In 2016, Butterfield also spoke at Black Enterprise’s TechConneXt Summit about the need to diversify the tech industry in 2016.

Cooper, a Wall Street veteran, joined Goldman Sachs in 1996 to build and lead its energy sales group. She shot up the corporate ranks from there. In In 2000, she became co-head of the commodity business in Europe and Asia, based in London, and in 2002 assumed responsibility for the firm’s futures business.

“I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to Goldman Sachs through contributing to our clients’ success and to the development of my colleagues, and by giving back to the communities we operate in,” she reflects. “Am I done yet? Absolutely not. There is so much more opportunity at the firm and in our industry, and so I think there is more to do,” she told Black Enterprise in 2011.

In a more recent interview before today’s announcement, Cooper talked about how technology would influence her next career move in an interview for Black Enterprise’s TV shows.

“We’re in a world where technology and ideas are evolving the way we do everything. And so, my next chapter will be driven by purpose. It’s about the purpose of continuing to be involved in organizations and with people who are really going to continue to evolve the way we do everything—the way we connect as human beings, as people,” she said. “The way that we break down barriers to access. The way that we think seriously about each of our responsibilities to change the incoming equality dynamic that has become the norm in our society and so many societies.”

Cooper wrote a post on LinkedIn about joining Slack’s board:

I was impressed by Slack from our first introduction. Internally, Slack has the kind of talent and spirit that can move a company forward, operating from a shared foundation that aligns so deeply with my own. The investment in both products and people at Slack is rare, and I’m grateful for the chance to work with and learn from such a remarkable team.

As a product, Slack helps people better connect in the workplace, and that’s something I’m passionate about. It’s a powerful mission, to make people’s working lives simpler, more pleasant and more productive. Slack is quite literally improving the work experience for millions of people, every day – connecting people across the world, breaking down borders, enabling exposure to different perspectives – bringing people together to transform organizations on a global scale.

Britain’s 18th Century Faux Pas Offer A Warning For America

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

The United States may have declared independence on July 4, 1776, but joined the international community in 1778 with a little help from France. Traditional narratives of the American Revolutionary War often dismiss French support of the then fledgling republic as another chapter in an interminable cultural conflict between Britons and Gauls. However, that interpretation disregards the British government’s isolationist view and missteps that helped spark the Franco-American friendship.

Drunk on its success in the Seven Years War and ruler of a vast and nearly uncontested global empire, Britain pulled away from Europe. George III’s government believed the nation’s future lay overseas and planned to minimize its European footprint, opening opportunities to focus on its trading empire. Flush with cash from imperial assets Britain would be able to dictate policy in the region, wielding its economic prowess and sizable naval presence as cudgels.

The flawed strategy ignored the reality that strength invites contest and discounted the possibility that even traditional rivals would ally against a new common threat.

It’s Official: America Suddenly Isn’t Comfortable With LGBT People

Getty

The theory that LGBT acceptance in America will only ever increase over time is a reassuring one. The only problem is that it may not be true.

A new survey commissioned by the LGBT media advocacy group GLAAD and conducted by The Harris Poll found that fewer non-LGBT adults reported being comfortable with their LGBT peers than in previous years.

This marks the first time in the four-year history of the Accelerating Acceptance report that GLAAD has witnessed a decline in LGBT acceptance.

Bank of America to End Free Checking Accounts for Low-Balance Customers

Bank of America is doing away with the free checking account option — often used by people with low incomes — and will now require customers to keep more money in the bank in order to avoid a monthly fee.

via Money Magazine:

The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank this month is moving all of its remaining eBanking customers to standard core checking accounts that charge a $ 12 monthly fee unless the customer receives a direct deposit of $ 250 or more or a minimum daily balance of $ 1,500, the Wall Street Journal reported. The move has been ongoing since 2015.

News of the bank’s decision did not go down well with some customers. A petition to revert the move on Change.org has garnered more than 45,000 signatures as of Monday evening. “Many low income families do not meet these requirements,” the author writes. “There have been times where I’ve only had $ 10 to my name. That wouldn’t even cover the maintenance fee.”

Banks often charge fees for checking services since accounts can be costly for institutions to maintain despite income from overdraft and other fees. But with this latest move, some Bank of America customers feel the bank is turning its back on its traditional values.

“Bank of America was one of the only brick-and-mortar bank that offered free checking accounts to their customers,” the Change.org petition reads. “Bank of America was known to care for both their high income and low income customers. That is what made Bank of America different. Bank of America was the bank of every American with a dream.”

The bank offered a rebuttal: “For anyone who chooses us as their primary bank relationship, with a direct deposit of just $ 250 [per] month or $ 3,000 [per] year, they’ll get full access to all of our financial centers, ATMs, mobile and online banking,” a Bank of America spokeswoman told the Journal. “That’s a great value and our client satisfaction scores are at all-time highs.”

MONEY also reached out to Bank of America but did not immediately receive a response.

This is not the first time Bank of America has faced backlash over a decision to charge fees. In 2011, the bank toyed with the idea of charging customers $ 5 a month for making purchases with a debit card, but it eventually opted not to proceed with the plan.

While ending a free checking account option doesn’t sound like a major problem for most, this tweet puts it all into perspective:

The hidden spot of Central America – traveling in Nicaragua

Sitting between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, on the cusp of South America, is the Central American island of Nicaragua. This is a part of the world that is frequently visited, but it’s only the major nations that generally get a look in. In fact, you probably don’t know of anyone who has traveled to Nicaragua or is planning to travel there, and that’s a shame because this is a pretty amazing place.

But, everyone else’s loss becomes your gain, because there is a load of fantastic reasons to visit Nicaragua right now. This hidden spot of Central America is one that is still relatively unblemished by excessive tourism, and that’s what makes it the ideal place to head to right now! If you want to uncover the charm of this Central American gem, we suggest you check out these awesome things to do when you visit the best-kept secret in the Americas.

Go surfing in San Juan del Sur

It might surprise you to learn that Nicaragua is actually one of the best countries in the world for surfing. In fact, the famed San Juan del Sur beaches have some of the best waves in the world and are hugely popular with surfers. Not only are the beaches stunning, but they also give a unique opportunity to enjoy some of the best surfing opportunities in the world. You can even hire a board and have a lesson, and there are plenty of cheap bars and cool hostels here as well.

Ometepe Island

This stunning island was formed by two joined volcanoes and is a place of great aesthetic beauty. There is so much you can do here, including hiking, kayaking, and cycling, not to mention the fact that the place is full of healthy eating opportunities as well. Volcano hikes will set you back just $ 20USD and are well worthwhile, but they will take a while, so leave plenty of time. There are also some cool monkeys here that are really fascinating and mischievous, and give you something else to enjoy as well.

New Leon

If you are a culture vulture, and you prefer to stay in the more urbanized areas, a visit to New Leon will go down a treat. This used to be the capital of Nicaragua up until the mid-1850s when it was replaced with Managua. Leon is the cultural and intellectual hub of the country, with the National University based there, not to mention loads of museums, art galleries, and churches. A true highlight of any trip to Nicaragua, this is a city full of vibrant culture, and a tremendous food scene to go with it.

Visit the Stone Man

It’s always good to have new experiences, especially ones that are specific to the place you’re visiting. One of the great things you can do as a tourist in Nicaragua is to visit the Stone Man. This guy, Alberto Gutierrez, has been carving symbols and animals into stone for decades – he claimed it started as a message from God to help him kick alcoholism. Alberto will take you into his home and show you his stunning works free of charge – though we’d recommend giving him a donation.

These are just some of the amazing highlights of Nicaragua, and we hope you can see the appeal. This is one of the finest countries in the world to visit, and still a well-kept secret from much of the world. There is a lot natural, scenic beauty here, as well as plenty of interest to keep you occupied. Nicaragua could well become your new favorite vacation destination – discover her today.

5 of the spookiest places in America

At this point, you have to go out of your way to find a town or city in the US without a haunted house to call its own. Some people even book a spooky night in for themselves in a home that claims to have an above average amount of spirits (if there IS an average amount of ghouls in a building). But there are some of these creepy places that are head and shoulders above the rest… Here are just five of them.

Red Onion Saloon, Skagway Alaska

The Red Onion Saloon has been around since 1898 where it started life as a particularly busy ‘house of ill repute’ that saw thousands of visitors pass through its doors. But as time went on, the ladies who worked there moved on to bigger and better venues, and the saloon’s popularity began to decline. Nowadays the Red Onion is a museum which is open to the public, and many of the visitors have told tales of mysterious goings-on at the saloon. Unexplained fog, strange sightings in the mirrors and, most significantly, the spirit of a certain good-time-gal known as Lydia, have all been seen. As well as the usual footsteps in different rooms and the smell of perfume in the air, Lydia has been known to water the plants in the Madame’s old room which are later found to be damp.

Black Diamond Mines and Park, Antioch California

The Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is the home of not one, but two ghostly ladies – Mary and Sarah. Both are very unfriendly and often referred to as ‘The White Witches’, but these two apparitions have very different stories. Mary was a nanny in the 1800’s and played host to many different families’ children, who all seemed to die due to mysterious illnesses. The townspeople became suspicious and had Mary hanged as a witch. Ever since visitors to the mine reported seeing a white apparition near the entrance and people believe she is attempting to protect children from the dangerous mines. The second White Witch was a Sarah Norton who died in a carriage accident. Before she died, she specified that she didn’t want a funeral, but the town did attempt to give her one. However, there seemed to be strong spiritual resistance – storms and strong winds starting as if from nowhere. After she was eventually laid to rest, there have been reports of another bright apparition near the gates of the cemetery. Could it be her?

St. Augustine Lighthouse, St. Augustine Florida

Set in the nation’s oldest port, the lighthouse is home to numerous ghost, pirates and lighthouse keepers to name a few. The smell of cigar smoke is often present, with previous hosts known to be heavy smokers. One of the most tragic stories of the lighthouse is that of the daughters of Hezekiah Pity who lived there in the 1800s. While repairs were being done on the building, the two girls – Eliza, 13, and Mary, 15 – fell into the bay and both drowned. At night it is said you can hear the sound of the girls laughing and playing still.

Fordham University, New York NY

Although there are many universities in the US that are reported to be haunted, Fordham is one of the most prolific. Finlay Hall is now used as a dorm building but was originally a medical school. Those living there have woken to the sight of medical students in lab coats looking down on them, or even scarier, the sensation of choking. The dorms of Queen’s Court are just as bad. Students are said to be visited by the spirit of a Jesuit priest who took their own life. It is also reported that there are some very active spirits in Martyr’s Court. Future Fordham students, beware!

If you’re looking for a scare, visit some of these spirit-ridden places to get spooked! But remember, we can’t be held accountable for anything that goes ‘bump’ in the night…

How to save money while travelling in Latin America

Latin America has so much to offer those who are looking for a dynamic and adventurous place to visit on vacation. You may have visited this wonderful part of the world, but, if you haven’t, we recommend you visit right now. Now, it might seem like this is going to be a very expensive venture, but, there are actually plenty of money-saving options available to you to help save cash while you’re visiting Latin America.

There are plenty of excellent tips you can find online that will help you save money and have a better experience. However, we like to think that the tips we are offering here are specific to Latin America. Check out these awesome ideas and suggestions that will really play a big part in allowing you to save cash on your visit to Latin America.

Take the cheaper bus

It might seem like it’s the right choice to pay more and get a more comfortable, swanky, and luxurious bus, especially when you’re heading for a long journey. However, we are focused on trying to save as much money as we can on the trip, and that’s the main goal here. So, in order to save plenty of money on travel, you need to make sure you take the more basic bus – sometimes known as the ‘chicken bus.’ These are dirt cheap, and the perfect way of getting from A to B.

Do your own tours

Whenever we go abroad, it’s tempting to try to book and organize local tours. These are a great way of ensuring you get a new experience and soaking up some of the wonderful culture of Latin America. But, these tours are usually overpriced, and you will almost definitely be able to get a more cost-effective trip by sorting it out yourself. Make sure you hire bikes and make your own way around famous sites, such as Chile’s Luna Valley. It will save you money, you’ll get to avoid the crowds, and, as a bonus, you’ll keep fit in the process.

Always eat local

There’s a temptation when you are abroad to stick with what you know, and eat at restaurants that have that flicker of familiarity. The problem is, these restaurants are often much more expensive and can drain your budget pretty sharpish. So, the best thing to do is to make sure you always try to eat local. We think this is the best approach anyway because you get a wonderful amount of culture and experience from trying local foreign cuisines. And, you might even wind up trying something you’ve never had before!

Pick your flights sensibly

It’s actually amazing how much money you can save if you are clever about booking your flights. This is especially important if you are flying to somewhere in the back end of nowhere. When you’re going to book your flights, you need to make sure you aren’t overpaying. So, the first thing to do is avoid the airline’s direct website, where you will invariably overpay. Google or Skyscanner are often the best resources for ensuring you get the best deals, and manage to get your flights for much less money.

We feel these tips are essential if you are serious about wanting to save money on your trip to Latin America. There are some other techniques you can adopt as well, such as opting to go self-catering. Saving yourself money upfront is crucial, and will really help you to shave pennies off the overall cost of your Latin American adventure.

The Five Whitest Industries in America

Owler, a company that provides business insight, released a report that sheds further light on diversity and inclusion in corporate America. The report reveals which industries are embracing diversity and which remain the whitest in the nation.

(Image: iStock/MangoStar_Studio)

Over 1.5 million members of Owler’s community weighed in on how diverse they felt the leadership teams were in the companies they work for. The data was composed of 11,700 responses that assessed the leadership team diversity for more than 1,100 organizations.

The businesses with the worst employee perception of diverse leadership are in the following five industries:

  • Professional Services
  • Media and Entertainment
  • Industrial Goods and Services
  • Telecommunications
  • Real Estate and Construction

The Owler study also reflected the ongoing struggles for diversity within the tech industry. While there were many tech companies on the top 50 “Leadership Team by Diversity” list, as a whole, the tech industry ranked 7th out of 50.

The top industries with the most diverse leadership according to the report are:

  • Retail
  • Transportation and Warehousing
  • Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology
  • Travel, Recreation, and Leisure
  • Aerospace and Defense

Diverse leadership in a company including at the C-suite level and on the board, are found to accelerate diversification throughout the company. African American corporate directors are adamant about the need for diverse representation at the top. Sherwin Williams Co. director Matthew Thornton discussed this very subject in a Black Enterprise article focusing on power in the boardroom.

“I do feel I have a responsibility as a black board member,” says Sherwin-Williams Co. director Matthew Thornton.

“As black board members, when engaging in discussions and decisions on corporate governance and social issues, we have to ask ourselves, ‘Where and how can we make a meaningful difference?’”

“Having a seat at the table gives black board members the visibility and voice that will help companies connect the dots and focus on diversity and inclusion as critical aspects of long-term success.”

But a vocal few feel that with so much on the line, it’s unacceptable for black directors to take anything less than an activist stance.

“It is useless to advocate for diversity in the boardroom if we’re silent when we get there,” says Bruce Gordon, a former Verizon executive who sits on the boards of CBS Corp. and Northrop Grumman, bluntly.

“If you’re at the table and don’t use that seat to advance issues that are relevant to our community, then you’re wasting it and shouldn’t even be in the room. Get out of the seat and let somebody else have it.”

The Happiest Places in America

The pursuit of happiness is the great goal of so many Americans, and many of us never quite get there. It’s important to be happy and contented in your life and find some degree of fulfillment. A big part of improving your happiness is looking at the area you live, and trying to make sure you move somewhere marvellous. That’s why it’s a good idea to look at the happiest places in America and see if your hometown pops up in there (and if it doesn’t, it might be time to move)! This is a list of the top 5 happiest places in the country, officially…

Charlottesville – Virginia

This college town showcases Virginia at its most picturesque and beautiful. It is one of the best places in the country for young, aspiring students, and the natural beauty of the place keeps residents happy throughout the year. Just outside the town, a short drive away, you can visit Shenandoah National Park, and gaze in wonder at the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains. No wonder this is one of the happiest places in America to live!

Honolulu – Hawaii

If you have ever visited Honolulu, it won’t surprise you that it’s made this list. A tropical paradise full of beautiful scenery, golden beaches, and wonderful people, it’s no wonder the residents here are so happy. It might be farther out of the way than visiting other US cities, but it’s most definitely worth it because of the sensational surroundings. Sat on the coast of Oahu, and with the Diamond Head Volcano on its peninsula, you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away – in the best possible way.

Santa Cruz – California

It would seem absurd if Cali didn’t make this list, and it does with Santa Cruz. This is a dreamy oasis of golden sun, sandy beaches, and deep blue oceans – ideal for those who love the water. It’s the perfect slice of West Coast life in the United States, and a great way to get a taste of the natural beauty of the country. Check out the Beach Boardwalk, around since 1907, and famously used in the ‘80s movie The Lost Boys. You know what they say… it’s always sunny in Santa Cruz!

Barnstable Town – Massachusetts

New England is one of the most stunning areas of the US, and Barnstable Town is a perfect example of exactly why. Situated between Boston and Cape Cod, it is the perfect idyllic paradise for those who love a more laid back and relaxed way of life. It’s actually just a short journey from Martha’s Vineyard as well. Barnstable Town ranks as one of the happiest places in the country, and it’s certainly not difficult to imagine why.

Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island – Florida

It should come as no surprise that Florida takes the top spot on our list. Despite the tongue-twister of a name, Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island is a true slice of heaven on Earth. The sea air and incredible surroundings have plenty of health benefits, and stress is a distant concept when you’re living somewhere this wonderful. With sprawling coastline and peaceful surroundings, is it any wonder this is the happiest place in the country?!

If you’re looking for somewhere to move where you want to be happier, these places are your best bet. It’s not just places that can boost your health, but, also a less stressful and intense way of life. City living can get on top of you, so it’s sometimes good to look elsewhere, like these places!
