Sarah Hyland Announces She’s Taking A Break From Social Media Following Her Cousin’s Death

Yesterday, Sarah Hyland revealed that her 14-year-old cousin had died in a drunk driving accident, and she urged her social media following to keep their nasty and ignorant comments to themselves. Unfortunately, however, Sarah’s request for civility didn’t go as planned.

Today, the Modern Family alum announced she was taking a break from social media for the next little while. Following the revelation that her young cousin had passed away, some people on Twitter criticized her for the manner in which he tragically died.

At first, Hyland accused her followers of talking negatively about something which none of them had any knowledge – a fair point considering exact details haven’t been released.

The star said, “and how dare you attack when a beautiful life has been lost.” On a more positive note, Sarah and her Modern Family co-stars shared a link to a GoFundMe page and it has since garnered more than a few dollars for both medical expenses and funeral fees.

Unfortunately, thousands of people die in drinking and driving related accidents every year. However, in the modern era, drunk driving has since become a massive social faux-pas. It is no longer a social norm as it once was due to years of activism and raising awareness.

According to a study from the Port of Springer Nature, a majority of car accidents, especially fatal ones, are caused, in part, by drinking and driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that approximately $ 37 billion in damages are caused every single year as a result of drinking and driving-related accidents.

Moreover, someone dies in an alcohol-related crash every fifty-one minutes. Most drunk drivers are men, although some are women. However, there is a significant disproportionate ratio.

Ever since the legalization of marijuana in several states in the United States, as well as the legalization of the substance nationally in Canada, the risk of more fatal accidents has been a subject of discussion. As the years go by, authorities say road-side tests will increase in sophistication regarding what substances they test for.

Military Spouse Looking for a Job? Walmart Announces Preferred Hiring

Military spouses: Walmart would like to thank you for your service with a job.

The retail giant has announced it will give hiring preference to military spouses, who face the added burden of frequent relocation due to military transfers and deployments.

While the rest of the nation enjoyed an unemployment rate well under 5% in 2017, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates military spouses and spouses of recent veterans faced a 16% unemployment rate for the same year.

Walmart previously offered military spouses and veterans the ability to transfer from one of its Walmart or Sam’s Club locations to another, but the company will now give hiring preference to any military spouse with a current Uniformed Services Identification Card.

This initiative comes five years after the company launched its Veterans Welcome Home program, which pledged to hire 250,000 military veterans by 2020.

Amazon Announces Free Shipping for Holidays — No Prime Membership Needed

Amazon is the latest e-commerce retailer to offer free shipping on all pre-holiday purchases, regardless of membership status.

Amazon typically offers free two-day shipping to Prime members, who pay $ 119 for the privilege. Otherwise, shoppers must hit a $ 25 purchase minimum to access free shipping.

“All Amazon customers can enjoy free shipping with no minimum purchase amount on orders that will arrive in time for the Christmas holiday,” the company announced on its website.

It also noted that eligible items typically ship in five to eight days.

The promotion started Nov. 5 and is available “for a limited time.”

Amazon’s offer is likely in response to increasing competition from other retailers that hope to lure customers to their e-commerce options.

Target announced Oct. 23 that it would offer free two-day shipping to all online shoppers without requiring a minimum order size. That promotion began Nov. 1 and will continue through Dec. 22.  Target typically has a $ 35 minimum order requirement to access free shipping.

Meanwhile, Walmart announced the same day that it’s expanding its free two-day shipping option to Marketplace items sold by third parties.

“In the coming months, you will see millions of additional items with the two-day free shipping label,” the company announced. Walmart.com will still require a $ 35 minimum order for free two-day shipping.

Customers in search of the best shipping deal for their online holiday shopping should watch the fine print for deadlines and restrictions that could delay delivery of those gifts.

One Last Free-Shipping Hurrah?

These free shipping offers are enticing for customers, but retailers may not be so generous next holiday season.

The U.S. Postal Service has proposed a 9% to 12% increase for the parcel select shipping service used by Amazon for the last leg of delivery. FedEx also announced that ground and home delivery shipping rates will increase by an average of 4.9%.

These increases don’t go into effect until January 2019. But they surely have major e-commerce players preparing to adjust their shipping strategies or make up for the increase in other ways — potentially by increasing prices.

Wu-Tang Launches Lipstick Line And Announces Nov. 9 is ‘Wu-Tang Clan Day’

After creating the “cash rules everything around me” mantra, multiple classic hip-hop albums, and a blueprint for turning gritty street rap into mainstream success, the Wu-Tang Clan is giving the world lipstick.

The legendary rap group teamed up with Milk Makeup to launch their own lipstick line. The limited-edition collection is 100% vegan and comes in eight colors. Just like the hip-hop group, the lip colors are heavily inspired by Chinese culture—from its core ingredients to its package designs—to each of their names: Sacred, Fire, Chi, Flow, Frequency, Source, Cypher, and Ruckus, a reference to the I Ching Trigrams:

Although the collaboration may seem odd for the hardcore rappers, Wu-Tang’s RZA said it made sense since Milk Makeup founder Mazdack Rassi is a fellow New Yorker with whom he shares a lot of commonalities. He added that his wife, former Ford Model Agency model Talani Rabb-Diggs, loved the line idea and helped bring it into fruition.

“I have a great relationship with Milk’s founder, Rassi, and as New Yorkers, we’ve frequented some of the same circles,” RZA told Billboard. “We spoke about fashion and the cosmetic world and I revealed that my wife has a cool perspective about makeup [because] in her youth, she was in the modeling circles. She is a fan of Milk Makeup’s products and when [Rassi and I] talked about forming a collaboration that reflected our NYC sensibility and philosophy, makeup became the unique and unpredictable choice. The Milk Makeup collaboration was spearheaded by my wife.”

The line also pays homage to the group’s underground NYC roots and celebrates self-expression and strength. Harlem-born singer Teyana Taylor is featured in a video ad promoting the collection as a Wu Warrior, performing Kung Fu-inspired choreography.

“In previous generations, the feminine energy has been dampened by the world. But now, women’s strength, beauty, and wisdom is finally being celebrated,” said RZA, according to The National. “Warriors come in all forms, but right now women are the modern warriors, unapologetic in their strength and speaking out about things they’ve held in or feared they’d be shunned for, on both a personal and political level.”

The collection is sold exclusively on MilkMakeup.com for $ 440 or $ 55 for each lip color.

On Thursday, Wu-Tang held an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their iconic debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), with the premiere of a short documentary titled, For the Children: 25 Years of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). In the film, the Staten Island-born rappers reflect on their journey from the early days of their careers to ascending to hip-hop icons. A$ AP Rocky, A$ AP Ferg, and Gary Vaynerchuck also make appearances in the film.

At the film’s debut in Brooklyn, RZA announced Nov. 9 as “Wu-Tang Day” to commemorate the release of the groundbreaking album on Nov. 9, 1993. “Tomorrow, Staten Island, New York, is going to recognize Nov. 9 as the official Wu-Tang Clan day,” he declared.

Save The Waves Announces Global Contest, The “Dirty Wave Challenge”

SAVE THE WAVES TO HOST THE DIRTY WAVE CHALLENGE THROUGH ENDANGERED WAVES APP

Global contest to identify and clean the dirtiest surf location.

Davenport, Calif., (October 20th, 2018) – Save the Waves Coalition is proud to announce the launch of the Dirty Wave Challenge, a cash prize and a five thousand dollar stewardship fund that will be awarded to the dirtiest and trashiest surf ecosystem identified on the organization’s Endangered Waves App. The challenge opens October 20th, 2018 and closes on November 20th, 2018.

Launched in early 2018, the new smartphone App empowers surfers and beachgoers to monitor the world’s coastlines and surf ecosystems. Winner of best conservation mobile app in the HeroX competition by XPRIZE, the Endangered Waves App is available for iOS and Android devices.

The Dirty Wave Challenge is simple: capture a photo of the dirtiest and trashiest surf ecosystem, upload it to the app, and the winning photo will receive a cash prize and a day of stewardship with Save The Waves and partners to clean it up.

“There are approximately 31 million surfers worldwide, and they are the front line for our coastlines for climate change, trash, sewage, and other issues. Imagine if this entire community was mobilized to track and report coastal threats,” said Save The Waves Executive Director, Nik Strong-Cvetich.

The goal is to collect data and mobilize beachgoers and the surfing community around the key issues facing our coastlines, with this first challenge focusing on marine debris. Save The Waves Coalition plans to use the photos and data collected to better track and prioritize coastal threats, educate users, and share with coastal agencies and partners to take action worldwide.

“The Dirty Wave Challenge will help us fill the gaps in much needed coastal data and broaden our stewardship reach,” said Strong-Cvetich.

To Enter the Dirty Wave Challenge:

  1. Download the Endangered Waves Mobile App: www.savethewaves.org/mobileapp

  3. Select the Dirty Wave Challenge entry button, write a brief description, select your location, enter an email address, and submit.

  4. Share your submission on social media with the #dirtywavechallenge

  5. Each participant is only allowed 1 entry per challenge, but please have multiple photos of the issues available to validate entry.
