People go traveling for all kinds of reasons, but, most of the time, it’s a brief journey here and there to see some fantastic sights. However, if you’re looking to go to meet new people and really immerse yourself in the culture, then there are a few tips and tricks that you can do to make things go more smoothly.

It can be a lot of fun to get to know how people do things, whether it’s learning new attitudes or discovering a city or country through an entirely different lens, but knowing where to look can be tough.

It’s all about the food

If you really want to get to the heart of a country, then the best way is by discovering some local cuisine, but you need to know where to look. You need to seriously avoid anything that looks like it’s catering for the tourists, if the menu looks too familiar then you need to avoid it completely. Go off the beaten track, as the saying goes, and find some of the more hidden avenues that cater to the locals. If the menu looks different and unfamiliar, then you’re on to a winner. Also, avoid any chain restaurants, these might offer some local cuisine, but it’s targeted toward tourists; this is not where the locals will eat.

Stop worrying

Let your inhibitions go. While it’s essential to be mindful that you’re in a foreign country, and you might not be able to regain some personal items if they go missing, not everyone is out to get you. If you’re cagey or unsure, then people will pick up on that, making it harder to hold a decent conversation or to foster a burgeoning friendship. The moral of the story is, give people a chance, and you’ll find yourself looking more approachable.

Stay in a hostel

If you’re staying in a fancy hotel, then you’re not going to be mixing with other people. While people who stay in hostels are keeping it as low-key and social as possible. Also, hostels offer group excursions where you can get to know your fellow travelers. While they may not be locals themselves, they may have a few tips and tricks themselves they can offer you, or perhaps they’ve been around a bit longer, and they can introduce you to some of their local pals.

Learn some key phrases

If you can’t communicate, then you’re going to struggle seriously, it’s not safe to assume that everyone knows English. While most English-speaking people get lucky while on their travels, some get quite shocked when they realize that not as many people speak the language as they thought. If you learn a few key phrases then you will be on a better path to communicating with the people you want to get to know; you never know, they might offer to help with developing some of your language skills!

Apps

In the digital world that we live in today, there are apps that are specifically designed for this purpose, and you should use them to your advantage. If you do a quick google search, you will soon find that there are hundreds of people around you just waiting to meet up.

Wherever you go in the world, these few tips will give you the tools to meet new people. However, it all starts and ends with you, so as long as you’re open to meeting new people, you’ll be fine.
