Ariana Grande Passes On Grammy Awards — but Not Her Cinderella Grammys Dress

Ariana Grande may have passed on the Grammys red carpet this year — but the “Thank U, Next” singer wasn’t going to pass up on a red-carpet-level fashion moment.
Grande, who made headlines last week with the news that she would not be performing at — or even attending — the 2019 Grammy Awards, took to social media to show off what she would have been wearing to the Grammys: a custom blue Zac Posen ballgown.
Grande, who has 144 million followers on Instagram and 60.7 million on Twitter, posed for a series of pictures on her accounts wearing the icy blue Cinderella-esque dress. The first picture captioned: “when @zacposen makes u a custom gown it doesn’t matter if you’re singing or not 🌫…. thank u 🖤.”

The move is a notable one from the fashion front. Creating custom looks for a celebrity to wear on the red carpet is a costly affair for a designer and also, a calculated risk. The right look on the right person at the right moment could spell fame, or perhaps even an “iconic” moment. The wrong look, forgotten or critically panned. Posen himself took turns thanking Grande on his account.

Grande opted out of attending the Grammys because

Ariana, Nicki and More Stars Who Have Surprisingly Never Won a Grammy

Close, but no cigar. The 61st annual Grammy Awards are right around the corner, and the question of who will take home a trophy is at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Kendrick Lamar and Drake lead this year’s nominations with eight and seven, respectively, while Cardi B, Maren Morris and Lady Gaga scored five nods each. On Monday, January 28, what was touted on social media as a list of 2019 winners leaked online, but Us Weekly confirmed that the list was false.

“There is no legitimacy to this,” a Recording Academy spokesperson told Us on the following day. “Grammy Awards results are not shared, even with Recording Academy staff members, until the day of the Grammy Awards ceremony, when names of the recipients are delivered by [accounting firm] Deloitte in sealed envelopes.”

That being said, musicians who are nominated at the 2019 Grammys can do nothing but wait until the show airs on Sunday, February 10, to see if their names are called. Many artists such as Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello would become first-time winners if they are given a trophy at this year’s show.

But winning a Grammy Award is easier said than done. Some stars have been nominated for Grammys more than a dozen times, but have yet to hear their name called during the event.

From Nicki Minaj and Snoop Dogg to Queen and Katy Perry, keep scrolling to see which artists have shockingly never won a Grammy.

‘SNL’ Recap: Pete Davidson Gives Subtle Nod to Ariana Grande

Pete Davidson proved he hasn’t left ex-fiancée Ariana Grande completely behind during the Saturday, January 26, episode of Saturday Night Live.

Bunny Girl

Davidson subtly alluded to Grande in a rap about his love for dogs. The women featured in the music video sported the pop star’s signature bunny ears, though it turns out they just really loved bunnies. Wink, wink.

Meet Dolton

Host James McAvoy spoofed The Bachelor’s Colton Underwood as a man named Dolton looking for love on Virgin Hunk. The bit even touched on the Hannah B. vs. Caelynn drama when a contestant told Dolton that she grew up with one of the other women in the house and “she’s a toxic, lying bitch with no teeth.”

Philly Perfect

The Scottish host impressed viewers with his spot-on Philly accent in this sketch about a Charmin commercial focus group. Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson and Kyle Mooney provided backup as the other totally unhelpful participants.

U.E.S.

Leslie Jones rapped an ode to the Upper East Side of Manhattan, which she calls home (“I live here because I remember where I came from,” she explained). The comedian raved about having easy access to fresh bread, Postmates, cabs and a “nobody peed in here” smell on the subway. Meanwhile, McKinnon, an Upper West Side resident, was content staying home with her “warm cat” and Netflix.

A Happy Surprise

Steve Martin made a cameo in the cold open as Roger Stone. The veteran SNL host even referenced one of his most iconic sketches when he described himself as “a normal and straightforward guy.”

Mr. H

Chris Redd starred in this pre-taped sketch about a high school student who was encouraged by his teacher, played by McAvoy, to come back to class. However, Redd’s character thought he was much smarter than he actually was. The word “genius” was used … by him … and was not accurate.

McAvoy, Not McGregor

McAvoy wore a kilt during his monologue to show off his Scottish heritage and his “shredded” calves. The actor also joked about being mistaken for Ewan McGregor, though he noted that the Christopher Robin star has more money than him. The host sweetly lost his place on the cue cards at one point but made it cute when he embraced the slipup.

The Champion

Musical guest Meek Mill performed a mashup of “Going Bad” and “Uptown Vibes” and later “Championships.”

Saturday Night Live airs on NBC Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET.

Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” video appropriates Black culture, and we have to talk about it

Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” video appropriates Black culture, and we have to talk about it

Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” video appropriates Black culture, and we have to talk about it

On January 17th, pop star Ariana Grande dropped a video for her new single, “7 Rings,” a hip-hop-inspired joint about all of the joys of disposable income. Some of my Twitter timeline consisted of people candidly and comically talking about capitalism and how Grande’s wealth made them feel. Others continued stanning the singer as usual. But an overwhelming amount of Black women were not amused by Grande’s latest work. Rather, they were offended and taken aback by her use of Black culture to boost her sound.

The video, which is currently the #1 trending video on YouTube and has accumulated over 15 million views as of this article, starts off with a pink-tinted scene starring Grande and her pastel-obsessed, all-female ensemble. The crew dons their hardest, sexiest faces as Grande gives a rundown of her life to the tune of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound Of Music: The tragic events that crushed her, the luxurious adventures she has with “girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble.” But right before the minute mark, “7 Rings” takes a sharp, cringeworthy turn. The trap hi-hats come in, and Grande’s “Pretty Boy Swag” homage kicks off.

Soulja Boy is the mastermind behind “Pretty Boy Swag,” an equally opulent song that was legally sampled by Beyoncé on 2016’s “Hold Up”. Soulja, who is arguably the world’s first social media star, has been the subject of memes and articles galore this week for his interview with  The Breakfast Club, in which he accused Drake of stealing his lyrics and flow. Many have sided with Soulja Boy, saying that he has never received the appropriate accolades for his work, or even the basic respect he deserves for launching the career of one of pop’s biggest names.

For Grande to use his cadence with no credit is not only a slap in the face, but an especially bad business move as well. Soulja Boy is clearly very open when it comes to popping off about unauthorized uses of his material.

It looks like Grande took cues from 2 Chainz, too. His famous Pink Trap House in Atlanta was a safe space for Black people that he used as a free HIV-testing center and a family-friendly haunted house. Grande tried to recreate the energy he ushered in with this innovative space by incorporating a house of her own into “7 Rings,” but it came off as gimmicky. If you know what really happens in trap houses, then you know that they’re much more than party locations for champagne-inspired fantasies. Trap houses are often unfurnished spaces where drugs are produced and sold. Frankly, it is not within Ariana Grande’s range to change that narrative since she has no experience with that lifestyle.

Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” and Beyonce’s rap-singing (featured on “APESHIT,” “7/11,” and “Top Off”) also appear to have influenced Grande, as some folks online have pointed out.

New York rapper Princess Nokia also seems to be a victim of Grande’s apparently sticky fingers. In an Instagram video posted January 18th, the 26-year-old artist played “7 Rings” and “Mine,” a song from her 1992 Deluxe album released in 2017, side by side. Nokia then says, “Do that sound familiar to you? Because that sound familiar to me…Ain’t that the little song I made about brown women and their hair?”

Stans are choosing to cape for Grande, saying, “locals don’t even know [who Nokia is]” and “Sorry, who are you??” But if you listen closely to both songs, you can definitely hear similarities in the instrumental composition, the vocal tones of both performers, and even the lyrics. While Nokia talks about her hair by repeating the lyrics, “It’s mine, I bought it,” Grande repeats, “I want it, I got it” and “You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it” in a very similar rhythm.

Ariana Grande has made it known that she works with Victoria Monét and Tayla Parx, two talented Black songwriters who only have a sliver of Grande’s visibility. Their heavy involvement in her career, plus cosigns from other Black celebrities like Pharrell, surely makes it seem that Grande’s ties to Blackness are legitimate. But the fact remains that she is a white woman who has studied AAVE, and she is now using trap house imagery and lifting from the works of lesser known Black rappers without giving them credit. (It’s important to note that, in addition to this appropriation of Black culture, people have criticized Grande’s recent and frequent use of Japanese characters and aesthetics in her promotional imagery.)

I talked with fellow writers Erin McLaughlin and Wanna Thompson about Grande’s lip locks with Blackness. When I asked if this disregard for Black innovation was shocking on Grande’s part, McLaughlin said, “Black American culture is the most popular phenomenon in the world to be honest, so everyone thinks it’s always up for grabs. It’s always been the norm to expect ANYTHING from Black people—whether it’s our time, labor, or creativity. [Grande] being white makes it even worse…How do you look as a white girl with a team full of Black people doing a video like this?”

Thompson was not shocked either. “Everyone knows that Blackness is what’s cool,” she said. “Various artists have experimented with this in the past, and it’s still a formula that white women continue to utilize. From Gwen Stefani to Fergie to Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea…the list goes on and on. This tactic will never die, as long as you have an industry supporting the BS.”

“We all know white women are afforded privilege…Ariana is able to hide behind her ‘cute, quirky’ image without much backlash because she’s still viewed as that innocent kid from Nickelodeon,” Thompson continued. “I have called [her] out various times via Twitter in the last few months, and I was met with backlash…”

McLaughlin has similar sentiments: “She’s white. She’s a cute, petite white girl with a clean track record as far as being problematic goes. But also, stan culture has prevented people from being able to separate the art from the artist.”

Ariana, if you’re reading, hear me out. It doesn’t have to be this way.

You don’t have to go down in history as another white girl who turned to rap and Black culture to add sauce to her career. You’re already talented—no one can take that away from you. People love you for how open you are about your life. These moments of appropriation are unnecessary, and Blackness isn’t an act. Detracting from the hard work of Black people won’t get you as far as you hope. And if it does, you better believe that it won’t keep you there. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to.

Ariana Grande, Kanye West Feud Over Mental Health Turns Serious as Pete Davidson Posts Concerning Message

A Twitter spat between Ariana Grande and Kanye West over mental health took a serious turn on Saturday after Pete Davidson, an SNL star and Grande’s ex-fiance, posted a message on social media that some took as suicidal.

The tiff between the two musicians began when Grande waded into a feud between West and the music star Drake yesterday.

Drake and West and have notoriously had a contentious relationship since at least 2011, according to ELLE. Their feud was apparently reignited in September, when Drake made a snide reference to the sneakers West designs in a song. Then on December 13, Drake requested sampling a portion of Kanye’s song in one of his compositions. Soon afterward, Kanye launched into a Twitter rant that lasted more than 100 tweets.

Grande responded to the very public dispute with a teasing tweet of her own.

“Guys, I know there are grown men arguing online rn but miley and I dropping our beautiful, new songs tonight so if y’all could please jus behave for just like a few hours so the girls can shine that’d be sick thank u,” Grande wrote on Twitter, which she later deleted.

West did not take kindly to Grande’s intrusion and suggested that she was inserting herself into the beef to promote her new song, “Imagine,” which released Friday.

Grande then apologized for being insensitive about West’s mental health, but fired back at him for suggesting she was promoting herself.

“With all due respect, I don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. period. I was making a comment ab what men were doing at the time v.s. women. It was a joke which I understand now was probably insensitive. I apologize if I was in any way triggering and I hope u feel well today,” Grande tweeted. She later deleted her tweet.

This morning, Davidson appeared to side with West in an Instagram post.

“Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against [sic] mental health,” his post read. “I can’t explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this. We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I’m seriously disgusted.”

A few hours later, however, Davidson published another message that struck an even more serious tone.

“I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last,” Davidson wrote.

Davidson, who has spoken out frequently about having bipolar disorder and suicidal tendencies, appeared to suggest that he was feeling suicidal. Soon afterward, he deleted both messages.

Earlier this month, Davidson wrote on Instagram:

“I’ve been getting online bullied and in public by people for 9 months. I’ve spoken about BPD and being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don’t want to be on this earth,” he wrote. “No matter how hard the internet or anyone tries to make me kill myself. I won’t. I’m upset I even have to say this.”

In since-deleted tweets, Grande apologized for being insensitive about mental health issues.

“Man I’m so sorry I told a dumb joke. I really didn’t mean any harm. All I want everyone to be healthy and happy. so desperately,” she tweeted.

Soon afterwards, she tweeted seemingly at Davidson: “I’m downstairs and I’m not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything. I know u have everyone u need and that’s not me, but I’m here too.”

TMZ reported that she had made her way to 30 Rock in Manhattan, where SNL is filmed, in order to try and see Davidson.

Davidson was accounted for at SNL and “fine,” according to the New York Times.

Here’s Your Guide to the Movie References in Ariana Grande’s ‘Thank U, Next’ Music Video

Leave it to Ariana Grande to capture the essence of the teen rom-com with her music video for “Thank U, Next.”

In the highly anticipated video released on Friday, Grande pays homage to films like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Bring It On and 13 Going on 30 by channeling their sweet storylines. Viewers will even spot some cameos from some of the films’ stars.

The song, which has maintained the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks as of Friday, is a widely discussed self-love anthem that arrived in the wake of much public conversation about Grande’s past romantic relationships. “Thank U, Next” was released just weeks after she and Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson called off their engagement, and two months after Grande’s ex-boyfriend, the rapper and producer Mac Miller, died from an accidental overdose.

In the video, Grande cheekily pokes fun at the public’s curiosity about her personal life, recreating the gossip sequence about queen bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams) in Mean Girls. She also channels Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde), Torrance Shipman (played by Kirsten Dunst in Bring It On) and other pop-culture heroines, employing the references in service to her message about the challenges of moving on after a breakup.

Here, we’ve compiled a handy guide to every movie reference that Ariana Grande squeezed in “Thank U, Next.” You can thank us later.

Mean Girls

Like any true queen bee, Mean Girls takes precedent as the alpha rom-com in “Thank U, Next.” Grande dresses up in full Regina George looks, down to the Louis Vuitton purses, silver initial necklace and long blonde hair. The video’s typography and the song’s original artwork mimic that of the film and, of course, its infamous “Burn Book.”

Additionally, some of the most high-profile cameos in the music video appear during the Mean Girls segments, with Jonathan Bennett returning as high school heartthrob Aaron Samuels and Stefanie Drummond as a major Regina enthusiast. Grande collaborator Troye Sivan appears in the video in a letterman jacket, while YouTube stars Colleen Ballinger and Gabi DeMartino and Grande’s former Victorious co-star, Elizabeth Gillies, round out the crew as Cady Heron and the rest of the Plastics. Kris Jenner makes a delightful appearance as Regina’s “cool mom.”

Legally Blonde

Grande went full valley girl for the Legally Blonde-inspired segments of the music video, where she sported a pink maribou feather Adam Selman tube top that would have warmed the cockles of Elle Woods’ heart. From studying on an orange MacBook Pro while working out on the ellipticals like any hard-working Harvard student to hanging out with the legendary Jennifer Coolidge, who reprises her role as Paulette, Grande portrays a woman ready to keep up with whatever life throws her way.

Luckily, the real Elle Woods has already given it her blessing.

13 Going on 30

Grande made a convincing Jenna Rink crashing the wedding, complete with her Barbie Dream House.

Bring It On

Grande’s been a longtime champion of the high ponytail, so it seems only fitting that she would channel the cheerleaders of Bring It On in “Thank U, Next.” Dressed up in a red cheerleading costume that reads “TUN” for “Thank U, Next” but looks quite similar to the one worn by the Rancho Carne Toros, Grande’s cheer squad faces off the East Compton Lovers, a reference to the beloved Clovers.

Ariana Grande Destroys Rank Misogynist (and Disgraced Journalist) Piers Morgan

Photo Illustration by Kelly Caminero/The Daily Beast

Just in time for Thanksgiving, patron saint of gratitude Ariana Grande is saying thank u, next to Piers Morgan, a crusty old misogynist masquerading as a journalist.

In recent years, Morgan has clung to relevancy by “feuding” with celebrities; these spats usually consist of Morgan picking on a star for wearing revealing clothes, with her “clapping back” by saying that she can wear whatever the fuck she wants. The disgraced former tabloid editor’s high-profile targets range from the Kardashians to Chrissy Teigen and Emily Ratajkowski. His triggers include naked bodies and women who talk back to him (or just talk?). Now, it’s not ridiculous to have a healthy skepticism toward beautiful, thin celebrities who tweet out nudes under the guise of radical self-love and female empowerment. There’s potential for an interesting, nuanced conversation there. But tweeting at a grown woman “It’s time for @KimKardashian to put her clothes back on” ain’t it.

This month, England’s estranged inappropriate uncle took aim at the girl group Little Mix for a promotional photo in which they posed naked with insults written across their bodies. On Good Morning Britain, Morgan attacked the image, which is part of a larger conversation that Little Mix is trying to facilitate about empowerment and body confidence. “What is empowering about this?” Morgan ranted. “I mean seriously—get your kit off, airbrush yourself to within one inch of your lives and put a bunch of horrible words on yourself.” Next, in a strong bid to make me learn the name of an individual member of Little Mix, singer Jesy Nelson called Morgan a twat on the radio. When the girl group was asked during an interview if they were surprised by Morgan’s remarks, Nelson responded, “Of course not, he’s a silly twat.” Morgan proceeded to demand a public apology from Nelson, and tweeted the controversial photo shoot next to the Dixie Chicks’ iconic Entertainment Weekly cover, accusing Little Mix of stealing the idea.

Pete Davidson Chokes Up Discussing Ariana Grande Breakup on SNL: ‘She’s a Wonderful, Strong Person’

Just thirty minutes prior to Saturday Night Live, Ariana Grande released a new song about her exes—including SNL’s very own Pete Davidson.

The song, called “Thank U, Next,” saw Grande sing, “And for Pete, I’m so thankful,” and contains a chorus that goes, “Thank u, next / I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex.” Its title is a reference to a tweet Grande fired off (and subsequently deleted) after taking issue with Davidson poking fun at their engagement in an SNL promo.

And on SNL’s “Weekend Update,” co-hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che welcomed Davidson on to roast some of the midterm election candidates.

Unfortunately, that was the last time the couple had a public outing as they broke up a few months later in May of 2017. Obviously, Mac still holds a special place in Ariana Grande’s heart.

Ariana Grande Urges People To Vote After Taylor Swift’s Political Message Influences Many To Register!

After Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande is the next superstar to encourage her fans to go vote in the midterm elections! While Taylor’s post was long and detailed, as it was her very first politically-charged message, Ariana’s was simple and straight to the point. She captioned a pic of her ballot envelope: ‘vote, f***ers.’

But considering that she said ‘bye bye to the internet for just a lil bit’ only a few days ago and still reminded her followers to vote, makes it worth noting!

Meanwhile, Ariana has been leaning on her loved ones since she and Pete Davidson broke their engagement.

Her social media silence was more like a way to only post about things that really matter to her for a while.

As for Taylor Swift, her lengthy post came as a huge surprise as she had managed to stay away from politics before then.

She wrote: ‘In the past I have been reluctant to voice my political opinions, but due to some events in my life and in the world in the last two years, I feel really differently about that now.’

Taylor went on to say that ‘I believe in the fight for the LGBTQ rights, and any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or on gender is WRONG. I believe the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color’s terrifying, sickening and prevalent.’

View this post on Instagram

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

Proving how much her voice can influence people for the better, voter registration spiked massively immediately after her message was posted!

‘We are up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period,’ Vote.org sector of communications’ Kamari Guthrie stated.

Two days later, Vote.org released another statement about Taylor’s impact.

‘Since Taylor Swift’s well-publicized Instagram post on Sunday night, in which she urged her 112 Million fans to vote, Vote.org has found a massive spike in voter registering nationwide. While there’s several factors that contributed to this, a majority of new registrations since Taylor Swift’s post on Sunday have been people between the ages of 18 and 29 years old – about 102,000 out of 240,000 total new registrations in less than 48 hours.’

Let’s hope Ariana Grande will manage to do the same!

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson Are No Longer Engaged

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have ended their relationship, four months after the couple announced their engagement.

“It was way too much too soon,” People reports, citing a source for the pop star who said, “It’s not shocking to anyone.”

The 25-year-old pop star and the 24-year-old Saturday Night Live cast member first announced they were a couple in May, and shared their engagement weeks later in June. While they were together, they dedicated warm shout-outs to each other in their work.

Grande had titled a track on her new chart-dominating album Sweetener after Davidson himself, “Pete Davidson,” and the pair made their red carpet debut at the VMAs in August.

After Grande’s ex-boyfriend Mac Miller’s died on Sept. 7, Grande took some time to regroup, according to a statement released by her team in September.

“Given the events of the past couple of years, Ariana is going to take some much needed time to heal and mend,” the statement read. “She will be staying close to home and using this period to spend time with her loved ones and work on new music without deadline.”

Recently, though Grande canceled her performance on Saturday Night Live’s premiere episode on Sept. 26th, she did join him at 30 Rock when the episode was being filmed. During a Weekend Update segment, Davidson delivered a monologue about living with Grande.

Spokespeople for Grande and Davidson did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment.
