White wine aficionados up in arms about emoji snub

It’s officially white whine season. Vintners and aficionados are up in arms over the glaring absence of an official white wine emoji on iPhones and Android devices, despite a yearlong campaign by maker Kendall-Jackson to convince Unicode (the organization that “controls” emojis) to add the symbol. “I’m outraged,” said NYC wine auctioneer Charles Antin. “The…

Jazmine Headley, Mom Whose Baby Was Ripped From Her Arms, Receives An Overdue Apology From The NYC Council

A month ago, one of the most disturbing optics to hit the internet emerged, of a Black woman lying on the floor, clutching her toddler to her body while several members of the New York Police Department pried her child from her tight clasp.

The incident, which took place in a public benefits office in Brooklyn, New York, on December 7, reminded many of the violence Black women experience for merely existing. Jazmine Headley, a 23-year-old mother who visited the office to inquire about her SNAP benefits and a subsidy for her son to attend day care, was accosted by the building’s city peace officers and later five New York Police officers because she opted to sit on the floor in the crowded waiting area.

“You’re hurting my son!” Headley screams in the terrifying video.

On Tuesday, Headley sat before New York City Council members as she explained how her life was violently disrupted due to the officer’s actions.

“It’s not just the fact that I was arrested. It was the harsh way that I was treated by people who are supposed to help me,” she said.  “In my case, I was just sitting. A peaceful act,” Headley said during her emotional testimony.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who was one of the main advocates for Headley’s release, personally apologized to her. One that was way overdue and will no doubt, still no soothe the pain she experienced.

“I also want to apologize. I’m sorry on behalf of the city of New York. I’m sorry you ever had to go to that HRA center. I’m sorry that you and your baby had to experience that trauma,” Johnson said.

Headley, for her refusal to move was arrested and spent four nights in Rikers Island until she was released after a judge dropped the impending charges against her.

“You deserve so much more than you received and I am deeply, deeply apologetic that you had to have this experience and I am similarly, deeply, deeply grateful for your bravery,” Johnson said.

In response, the city council will introduce 13 bills which would look into city offerings for residents who rely on government assistance. They include a quarterly report on use-of-force-incidents from the Department of Social services and the creation of the “Office of the Special handlers,” which would respond to complaints and questions, according to The New York Times.

But what Headley also needs is a direct apology from the officers who failed her and provided an environment of chaos instead of intending to diffuse and protect.

To date, none of the police officers involved have faced disciplinary action, while two of the peace officers involved are no longer in their roles, according to report by NY1.com.

GoFundMe for Jazmine Headley, Brooklyn Mother Who had Baby Ripped From Her Arms by Cops, Exceeds $25,000 Goal

A GoFundMe campaign to raise $ 25,000 for Jazmine Headley, the Brooklyn mother who had her toddler wrestled from her arms by police, exceeded its goal– raising $ 30,894 in just a day.

In a viral video, the 23-year-old mother holds on desperately to her one-year-old son as police officers forcibly attempt to separate the child from her arms.

The police were called in after Headley refused a request to stop sitting on the floor of a Human Resources Administration facility. She was on the floor, reportedly, because there were no chairs available as she waited for service.

Headley was arrested and spent time on Riker’s Island, but was freed after New York City Mayor Bill deBlasio’s office convinced the Brooklyn District Attorney to drop the charges against her, reports CBS News.

The GoFundMe was started by the Brooklyn Defender Service, the legal team that got Headley out of jail. According to a note posted on the GoFundMe page, the funds will be used to help Headley get back on her feet and also to “help her pay for child care and other expenses, allowing her to get back to the job and life that is waiting for her.”

The incident is the latest in what has become routine acts of police brutality against people of color. In May, a 23-year-old woman was violently arrested at a Waffle House in Alabama, after she refused to pay $ 0.50 cents for plastic spoons and had requested a corporate phone number to lodge a complaint.

Earlier this year, 22-year-old Stephon Clark was fatally shot by police in his grandmother’s backyard after cops mistook his cellphone for a gun.

And more recently, Jemel Roberson, an armed security guard who apprehended a shooting suspect in a Chicago bar, was mistakenly shot dead by police who thought he was the perpetrator.

The Beverley Arms, East Yorkshire: hotel review

This revamped hotel’s heritage, comfort and biscuits appeal strongly to our writer, but his companion proves harder to please …

Driving into the leafy East Yorkshire town of Beverley, we clatter over a cattle grid, then past the racecourse into a smart Georgian market town. I am accompanied by Sophie, my partner, a woman who spent many years inspecting hotels, with clipboard in hand. She has never lost the skills. “Remember,” I hear myself say. “Try and enjoy yourself.” She gives me that look, the one that says, I’ll do what has to be done.

We both like Beverley, a cluster of architectural gems around a market square. When Henry V came to town after Agincourt, it took three days to get all the muck out of the market, but these days it is spotlessly neat and tidy. Almost uniquely in modern Britain there is only one empty shop, something of an achievement in itself, and the rest look satisfyingly prosperous. The medieval minster is the big draw, and a worthy one too, filled with grotesque carvings, soaring columns and ancient artefacts. Nearby stands the house where Mary Wollstonecraft spent some of her early teenage years, a fact only rediscovered in early 2018. There’s a plaque on the facade (it’s at 2 Highgate).

The T Rex’s tiny baby arms might have been way more useful than they seem

t rex arms

Running into a Tyrannosaurus rex in the wild would have been a truly frightening thing for just about any animal that roamed the earth between 65 million and 80 million years ago, and for an obvious reason. The mighty meat-eater was huge in size and had a mouth built to turn bones into powder. If it snagged you with its jaws you were probably going to have a bad time, but nobody was afraid of its puny little arms… or were they?

As Live Science reports, a new study presented at a recent meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology took a close look at how T. rex’s arms would have functioned, and it makes some bold predictions.
