Persistent Back Pain Is A Serious Warning Sign

New research has found that older women who experience frequent back pain may have a higher risk of death.

Carried out by researchers at Boston Medical Center, the study is the first to investigate the effect of persistent back pain on mortality, with previous researchers only focusing on the impact of back pain on disability.

For the new study, the researchers followed 8,321 women aged 65 or…

Marc Jacobs Will Try to Bring Back Grunge. But Did It Ever Leave?

Photo illustration by The Daily Beast/Photos Courtesy Marc Jacobs

It feels like every Forever 21 has stocked a faded black Nirvana smiley face T-shirt since the dawn of time. But it wasn’t too long ago that grunge—or capital-F fashion’s take on the style—was met with downright rage.

Take, for instance, Marc Jacobs’ “Grunge Collection” for Perry Ellis.

By 1993, grunge had infiltrated airwaves, but it had yet to fill department store aisles. True, Courtney Love had already trampled onto the scene in her combat boots and plaid collared dresses, and kids all over the country may have been digging into thrift store bargain bins for a used flannel to emulate their rock heroes. But the fashion world had turned its skinny shoulder to the movement.

Freeform’s newest poster for Life-Size 2 will take you right back to Sunnyvale

Freeform’s newest poster for <em>Life-Size 2</em> will take you right back to Sunnyvale

Freeform just released the first poster for the highly anticipated Life-Size 2. The film, which joins Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas as an original feature, will premiere on Sunday, December 2nd. In the whimsical poster, Tyra Banks, who plays main character Eve, is peeking into a dollhouse.

Check out the poster for Life-Size 2 below.

Freeform captioned the photo, “Our favorite doll returns.”

Life-Size 2 is the sequel to Disney Channel’s fantasy comedy film Life-Size. The 2000 film follows teen Casey Stuart (Lindsay Lohan), who tries to resurrect her mother back from the dead with a spell book. The spell goes awry, and she accidentally brings to life a plastic toy doll, Eve (Banks), instead.

News of a Life-Size sequel first broke in December 2015. In an interview with Hollywood Life, Banks confirmed she had read many drafts for the film. She said:

“We have gotten many drafts of scripts, and the one thing I can say is that to the Disney Channel executives, Life-Size is so precious. It’s like their baby, so they just want it perfect. They keep re-doing it, and re-doing it, and re-doing the script, and we are in another round of redos.”

Fast forward to April 2017, and fans got confirmation that the sequel was officially happening. Many speculated over whether Lohan would reprise her role as Casey Stuart. And in April of this year, during an appearance on Steve, Banks confirmed that Lohan was, in fact, returning. However, the Mean Girls actress has been noticeably MIA in all the Freeform promos.

Life-Size 2 will follow Grace (Grown-ish’s Francia Raisa), a CEO of a toy company who faces struggles in her job. Grace’s old doll, Eve (Tyra Banks), awakens to help get her life back on track.

Chrissy Teigen Hits Back at Mom-Shamer Over Breastfeeding Question

Chrissy Teigen doesn’t have time for the haters — especially when it comes to her kids with husband John Legend.

The Lip Sync Battle cohost hit back at a mom-shamer who tried to slam her for not breastfeeding in the comment section of the “All of You” crooner’s Instagram post on Monday, November 5.

“Wild scene backstage at @nbcthevoice,” Legend, 39, captioned a pic of Teigen, 32, bottle-feeding their 5-month-old son, Miles, while the model’s mom, Vilailuck Teigen, snuggled with their 2-year-old daughter, Luna.

One commenter was quick to ask, “You no longer breastfeed?” to which Teigen hilariously responded.

“John never breastfed Miles,” the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model quipped in response, referring to the fact the comment was made under her husband’s picture.

Teigen is no stranger to clapping back at social media trolls who enjoy picking on her. Earlier this year, the Utah native put a hater in their place after the woman made a comment about her appearance less than four months after she gave birth to her second child.

“You look beautiful but you should grow your hair long again,” a follower wrote underneath a series of pictures Teigen shared from a late-night talk show appearance in October. “Girls with round faces should not have short hair like that. It makes your face looks huge. Been there….believe me….LONG HAIR.”

Teigen responded: “@bcnjw honestly wow thank you because when I wake up each morning I wonder what @bcnjw would do and then I try to make her happy. So this was a mistake on my part.”

Weeks prior, the Cravings author shut down speculation that she and Legend — who tied the knot in September 2013 — were expecting another child.

“I’m asking this with the utmost respectful, but is @chrissyteigen pregnant again?” a Twitter user commented about a photo of Teigen from the 2018 Emmys in September.

“I just had a baby,” Teigen hit back. “But thank you for being soooo respectful.”

Wale wasted no time responding to G.O.O.D. Music artist 070 Shake after she decided to get shady on Twitter last week. Far from the first time the “Black Bonnie” rapper has clapped back, we’re not at all surprised to see Wale wants smoke.

In case you missed it, a fan hit Twitter to suggest a collaboration between Wale, Kid CudiWiz Khalifa, and 070 Shake. Instead of keeping her thoughts to herself, 070 Shake responded: “eh not really feeling the Wale part.”

Wale caught wind of the unnecessary comment and responded,  “Lmao love how u went out ur way to say that . Go awf, queen.” See his tweet below.

After Wale called 070 Shake out, the rookie tried to back her way out of big dawg beef…but it was too late. “You just too fire for me bro feel me, love you” Shake wrote. But Wale wasn’t feeling her, telling the young artist he was “cappin’” and once again referring to her as a “queen.”

In other words…don’t let your mouth write a check that your *ss can’t cash, Shake.

Wesley Snipes Ordered To Pay Back Millions To The IRS

Wesley Snipes has been fighting the government for years to keep the IRS from collecting $ 23.5 million in back taxes.

According to Yahoo, the “Blade” star offered to settle his debt for nearly $ 850,000, but the IRS rejected, so he filed a petition asking the tax court to overturn the decision.

On Thursday, U.S. Tax Court Judge Kathleen Kerrigan upheld the government’s decision, per the Hollywood Reporter, after Snipes failed to convince a tax court that he doesn’t have the assets to pay more than six figures.

In making her decision, Judge Kerrigan said, “Given the disparity between petitioner’s $ 842,061 OIC [offer-in-compromise] and the settlement officer’s calculation of $ 9,581,027 as his RCP [reasonable collection potential], as well as petitioner’s inability to credibly document his assets, the settlement officer and her manager had ample justification to reject the offer.”

The judge also determined that paying the $ 9.5 million would not leave the actor in economic hardship.

In 2008, Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison for not filing his federal income tax returns.

Trump is finally bringing justice back to college campuses

At last, some good campus news: The Trump administration is going to require colleges to allow cross-examination in sex-assault cases. Kaiser Permanente Southern California Provides Numerous Drop-Off Locations for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

PASADENA, Calif. — Kaiser Permanente Southern California facilities, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, are encouraging community members to participate in “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day” on Saturday, October 27, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“At Kaiser Permanente we remain actively involved in the total health of our Southern California community, and we feel it’s our responsibility to educate the community about the importance of responsibly disposing prescription drugs, while also raising awareness of the significant harm that comes from abuse of medications, “said Alan Kiyohara, vice president, Pharmacy Operations and Services for Kaiser Permanente Southern California. “Studies have shown that medicines that remain in the home are highly susceptible to misuse.”

DEA National Rx Take Back - Saturday, October 27 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit deatakeback.com for more information. There are 16 Kaiser Permanente Southern California facilities participating as drop-off sites for Take Back Day. Earlier this year, 11 Kaiser Permanente facilities participated during the Take Back Day, where more than 6,700 pounds of unused and expired medications were collected.

These prescription drug take back events address vital public safety and public health issues while providing residents with a convenient and anonymous way to safely dispose of expired, unwanted, or unused medicines.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, more people started down the path of addiction through the misuse of opioid prescription drugs, and each year higher amounts of opioids are being turned in at the Take Back Day events.

Those unable to participate on October 27 can properly dispose of medications at drug disposal kiosks in Kaiser Permanente facilities throughout Southern California. Kiosks are available at Kaiser Permanente locations for public use during regular service hours.

A listing of additional drop-off locations available for public use can be found on the Drug Enforcement Administration website.

Using 529s for Going Back to School

using 529s for going back to schoolReaders, have you ever considered using 529s for going back to school, either for yourself or a partner? If you’re thinking about getting a law degree or enrolling in another graduate program in the future, you should know the basics of using 529s to fund your education. I’m betting that the typical Corporette reader is more familiar with these tax-advantaged savings plans than the general public — only a third of Americans know what they’re for, which I assume is partly due to their oh-so-creative name — but it’s been quite a while since we’ve discussed them, so it’s time for an update.how to use 529s to go back to school(By the way, the 529’s lesser-known name does reveal its purpose: QTP, or “qualified tuition program.”) Here’s our last discussion on tax-savvy investments such as 529s — and also check out our 529 tips for working moms.

One major change since then, which will only apply to you if you have kids or are considering having kids someday, came courtesy of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that Congress passed in 2017. Under the new rules, 529 funds can be used not only to pay for college but also for tuition at K–12 public, private, and religious schools. (We’ll get into that later).

Psst: On the subject of grad school, we’ve previously shared tips on how to financially prepare for grad school, as well as how to transition from a lawyer’s salary back to paying tuition and — for when you’re out of school — tips on how to pay off big student loans

Here are some questions and answers about using 529s for going back to school, including a few tips from Jane Yoo, CEO of Jane Financial, a financial planning firm in Oakland, CA, that serves Gen X women professionals:

What are the tax advantages of opening a 529?

With 529 college savings plans, investment growth and withdrawals aren’t subject to federal taxes. The plans are administered by states, although you can use one from anywhere you choose, and some states offer their own tax benefits when you make contributions. For example, New York residents can deduct up to $ 5,000 ($ 10,000 for married couples filing jointly) on state income tax. If you live in Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, or Pennsylvania, you can still get a state tax deduction if you have a plan from another state. Note: In addition to the 529 option called a college savings plan, you have the option of the less popular 529 prepaid tuition plan, which both states and educational institutions can offer. (Only states can offer college savings plans.)

What can 529 plans be used for?

You can use funds from a 529 to attend a college or university or to enroll in post-secondary training — options include graduate schools, community colleges, trade schools, qualified online degree programs, and even many schools outside the U.S. (Here’s a searchable database.) As mentioned above, 529s can also fund tuition at private elementary and secondary schools, up to $ 10,000 per beneficiary per year.

When should I open a 529 plan?

If you’ve decided to go to grad school yourself, the answer is “now.” Regarding a child’s college education, says Yoo, “It’s never too late to get started.” She adds, “I have many friends and clients who worry that they’re supposed to start saving as soon as the child is born. I generally recommend selecting the age-based option that invests the contributions in a mix of stock and bond mutual funds that gradually become more conservatively allocated (e.g., more bonds than stocks) as the child approaches age 18. I like 529 plans that use low-cost, broadly-diversified investments from Vanguard or iShares; the Utah, Arkansas, and Virginia 529 plans are good places to start your research.”

How much can you put into a 529?

The IRS doesn’t set a specific limit for 529 contributions, but the money can’t exceed the beneficiary’s expected qualified education expenses. States have their own maximums; for example, New York allows up to $ 520,000 in contributors for a single beneficiary. If you’re lucky enough to have someone lending a hand as you save for your education (or your child’s), here’s what you should know: The gift tax exclusion for 2018 is $ 15,000 per beneficiary (increased from $ 14,000 for 2017), but that max can go up to $ 75,000 when a single year’s contribution is treated as being made over five years — that’s called “superfunding.” (For a couple who is married and filing jointly and wants to avoid the gift tax, those numbers become $ 30,000 and $ 150,000.)

When can you withdraw the funds?

A 529 isn’t like an IRA — you won’t pay a penalty for withdrawing your money “early,” as long as you put it toward qualified education expenses. However, you need to use funds from a 529 in the same calendar year in which they’re withdrawn. There’s no set deadline to take the money out, either, which is helpful if you decide not to go back to school and are planning on having kids. (See below.)

Can you use the funds for anything else, such as a down payment on a home?

No. If you withdraw money from a 529 for anything other than qualified educational expenses, you’ll have to pay state and federal income tax and an additional 10% federal tax penalty on your earnings.

Can a 529 plan be transferred to someone else?

When you open a 529, you can designate anyone as beneficiary — including yourself, of course. Within a family, you can change a plan’s beneficiary or roll over funds distributed from a 529 plan without tax penalty. For example, if you’ve been saving money in a 529 for grad school and at some point your plans change, you can simply change the beneficiary to your child.

Should I be worried about putting too much money in a 529?

If you’re considering a 529 for yourself, or especially for your child (or a future child), here is Yoo’s advice on what she said is the most common misconception about these plans — that you’ll “lock up” your money:

[Some clients are] concerned about over-funding the 529 plan; perhaps the child will receive a scholarship, or go to a lower-cost state university. If you are fortunate to have saved more than needed in the 529 plan, you have a few options. You could transfer the balance to another family member (e.g., the child’s sibling if applicable, niece/nephew, or even to yourself if you plan on obtaining a graduate degree). Or you can simply withdraw the unused balance, and (1) pay a 10% penalty on the earnings (not the original contribution) for using the funds for non-qualified education expenses, and (2) pay income taxes on the earnings.

Be sure to track your contributions over the years so that you can bifurcate the balance into contributions vs. earnings (e.g. growth) on those contributions. Note that if you withdraw the unused balance because your child received a scholarship, the 10% penalty on the earnings is waived, but you still would have to pay income taxes on the earnings.

Are you considering using 529s to go back to school? Have you used a 529 to fund your own education before (or your partner’s)? If so, how did you choose the plan?

FASHION DEAL UPDATE:

These Coffee Lovers Brewed Up a Florida Business From the Back of a Bike

Decision-making, long hours, late nights, financial concerns, constantly changing plans — it’s no secret that starting your own business is hard work.

It’s no different for the owners of Made Coffee, but at least they have direct access to a caffeine source at all times.

Specializing in canned and kegged cold-brew coffee — because, hello Florida heat — Made Coffee is on a mission to bring on-the-go, iced caffeine to the masses.

As the company continues to gain traction in the Sunshine State, co-founders Michael Rideout and Taylor Prater took some time from their 14-hour work days to look back at where they’ve been and talk about how far they want to go.

Biking With the Brews

A can of Made Coffee is held next to some plants.
Made Coffee produces upwards of 15,000 cans of cold brew coffee a day. Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

Like many a good story, the origins of Made Coffee can be traced back to a beloved local bar.

Back in 2015, Rideout and Prater were both working at Mandarin Hide, a trendy cocktail bar nestled in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg. Thanks to the combination of popular  espresso-based cocktails and an espresso machine that was constantly acting up, the idea for a cold, concentrated coffee product began to brew.

“We basically just started tinkering around, bought some equipment and started brewing out of the house,” says Rideout.

In keeping with their cocktail origins, they pitched the cold and nitro brew coffee creations in keg form to local bars and restaurants. They secured about five accounts to serve the product on tap in that first month.

Another good way to get word out about the newly made company? Hit the streets.

Rideout and Prater ordered a bike online and then hired someone to build a custom box frame — complete with a tap system — so that it was perfect for peddling the kegged coffee on the go. All in all, the custom bike ended up costing around $ 4,000 — about 50% of Made Coffee’s total startup costs.

They would do pop-up events with the bike, usually in front of one of their original account locations, but they really weren’t selling coffee as much as giving it out. And on top of that, they were selling their product to accounts at cost — basically just enough to cover what they were spending to make the brew.

Rideout says they focused on consumer education for the first year and a half — profitability wasn’t even on the horizon.

“We weren’t making any money,” he says. “We were trying to understand what we were doing, what the product was doing and get a lot of feedback from consumers to see what we needed to do.”

You Can Go Your Own Way

Two people work on roasting batches of coffee.
Brennan Rodriquez, a roaster and quality control specialist, and Rideout work at the company’s cannery. Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

After building up brand awareness, they started toying with the the next step in the plan: Opening a cold brew-focused café.

Rideout shopped around downtown St. Pete for a location and came close to settling on a deal, but a meeting with a business mentor made him rethink his retail plan.

He realized that in order for the business to achieve a large footprint and be recognized on more than just a city- or county-wide level, he was going to have to stray from the arguably easier route.

Having seen examples of big-name, ready-to-drink coffee products growing in popularity, he realized that no local businesses in the area had gone the distribution route; they just stuck to local shops.

So wholesale was the name of the game, but again, with origins firmly rooted in the bar realm, Rideout and Prater didn’t want to stray too far. Hence the idea of canned, cold-brew coffee.

Navigating a New Business

A woman with long brown hair attends a business meeting outside.
Taylor Prater, left, co-founder and brand manager of Made Coffee, discusses a marketing strategy that promotes local business with Carissa Scott of Octane Media at Trophy Fish in St. Petersburg. Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

Rideout had money saved up for the coffee shop idea and planned on securing another partner at some point, but getting into beverage distribution was a whole different beast. Building out a café could be done for around $ 150,000. But a beverage company? That’s wading into the millions of dollars territory — which is capital that the duo definitely did not have.

To help with the financial burden, they secured partners — who mainly work behind the scenes while Rideout and Prater handle the day-to-day operations. Then in September of 2016, they moved forward with a location for operations.

Dubbed The Cannery and coming in at 2,200 square feet, the facility build-out didn’t really start until January 2017. It took around four months to complete — and cost about half a million dollars.

While the team was waiting on completion of The Cannery construction, they started securing accounts before they even had a canned product to deliver.

“We had a little bit of a following, so we were teasing the idea,” says Rideout. “They were just kind of believing in us.”

And once they were finally ready to launch their canned coffee in April, they had customers waiting for deliveries right off the bat. And thanks to word of mouth, they secured another 20 accounts in the following weeks.

Those 20 accounts quickly turned into 50, and within two months of launching, the caffeinated duo were approaching their biggest pitch yet: Publix supermarkets.

With headquarters just two counties over in Lakeland, Florida, Publix was a good fit for the Made Coffee product. But after only working with local bars, restaurants and speciality grocers, pitching to a giant like Publix was no small feat.

“The learning curve was tough,” says Prater. “Their expectation was for us to already know all of these terms and processes and logistics, so we had to learn it very quickly.”

But their pitch was a success, and Made Coffee found itself in 10 Publix stores in the Tampa Bay area in August 2017. Not only did they have to work with the managers of each location to secure shelf space, Rideout and Prater stocked the shelves on their own.

“It was very early mornings,” says Prater. “But it was a really great experience because you really learn the back end of grocery.”

Making It Day by Day

In the beginning, Made Coffee was producing around 1,000 to 2,000 cans a day. Now, it’s churning out upwards of 15,000 per day.

Rideout and Prater have been able to run a pretty small production staff due to fast equipment, but their willingness to wear as many hats as it takes to get the job done has also helped.

“Our first couple of production days were bare bones,” says Rideout. “There was a production day that was just Taylor and me.”

“Which is not highly recommended,” Prater counters with a laugh. “But we did it.”

Weekly needs depend on the orders, or pars, but they typically follow the same production schedule: roasting one to four days a week, brewing five days a week, kegging two days a week and packaging one.

Then weekends are usually devoted to demos for potential customers and account visits — to make sure that everyone is happy with the product.

Rideout says he wanted to be involved in every aspect of the business, from delivering cans to visiting accounts to cleaning keg lines to fixing equipment to roasting and brewing coffee. But as Made Coffee continued to grow, taking on new local accounts and increasing its Publix presence, it made sense to bring on a little help.

The company is currently operating with a nine-person staff, but Rideout says that he and Prater still work 14- to 15-hour days on average.

“If there’s a 12-hour day, I feel like we missed something,” he says. “It’s just what has to be done.”

Pouring Over Your Business

Taking on the ambitious task of starting a ready-to-drink beverage company didn’t just have challenges on the business side — it took a personal toll on Rideout and Prater as well.

Both were still working full-time jobs when they started the company in 2015, and neither of them switched to Made Coffee full-time until 2017 — Rideout in April and Prater in August.

“From September 2016 to April 2017, all of my photos that I have of the build-out are at night at like 2 or 3 in the morning.” says Rideout. “I was working during the day and then coming over here and basically working… until I just couldn’t anymore.”

Both have only been paying themselves enough to cover their bills. All extra money has gone right back into the company. They’re both in favor of putting money toward equipment that will help them grow.

“I’d never been in debt,” says Rideout. “For the first time in my life, in 34 years, I have debt.”

Prater feels that in order to start your own business, you kind of have to take apart your life. And not just that, you have to be OK with taking apart your life. The long hours and devotion required to get it off the ground demand it.

Rideout agrees. “If you’re not willing to literally work as many hours as you have to and not sleep and be stressed on finances and wonder how you’re going to pay rent… don’t open your own business,” he says.

Brewing Up Growth

The long hours Rideout and Prater have put in over the years are paying off — Made Coffee recently achieved a huge milestone.

Previously, their canned cold brew could be found in 256 Publix stores. But as of Oct. 1, every Publix throughout the state of Florida features Made Coffee products. That’s a whopping 831 stores.

Additionally, Made has rolled out two new products in the past few months: bags of Made Coffee whole bean coffee and “Con Leche” cold brew, for the caffeine lovers who can’t tolerate the black stuff without a little cream and sugar.

To cope with the growth, they’ve signed a lease for a new 12,000-square-foot facility that will serve as a distribution hub and will be ready to roll in January of 2019. They’ve also brought on new equipment and staff, with plans to hire more throughout the year.

Prater says they plan on hiring about six remote employees who will manage designated areas throughout the state.

Overall, this next step for Made Coffee will cost an estimated $ 2 million — a far cry from the $ 8,000 in startup costs.

When Prater looks back to the beginning, she feels like she didn’t have any idea how to imagine the level of success they’re at now. But Rideout disagrees; he thinks everything is happening exactly as planned.

“I know that sounds crazy,” he says. “But I always say that if you’re surprised at what’s happening, you didn’t have confidence it could have happened.”

And no matter how big Made Coffee gets, both Prater and Rideout recognize the importance of remembering where they came from: Serving homemade cold brew from behind a bar to locals who believed in their dream.

Kaitlyn Blount is a staff writer at The Penny Hoarder. She only had one, two, six, fourteen coffees when she wrote this. OK, nineteen. But that’s it.

Back to Body-Con Tops

Body-con tops are very fitted and a little tighter than tailored fits. They’re usually made of a knitted jersey or yarn across natural and man-made fibers. Although knitted tops and knitwear are stretchy by nature, many have a Spandex or elastane content for extra soft and comfy stretch.

Body-con tops are very tight. They cling onto the body and showcase the natural silhouette of your figure creating maximal structure. This creates the opposite effect of a fluid or oversized fit that hides your natural silhouette thereby creating an unstructured effect.

You don’t to have an extremely smooth upper body that’s void of extra bits to wear body-con tops. Longer body-con tops can be pulled up a little and ruched or scrunched across the midsection to conceal lumps and bumps. Semi-tucking a body-con top creates a similar ruched effect, and is quite concealing (especially with the girdling effect of a high rise). Body-con knitwear with stitch interest like ribbed surface interests are more forgiving over body bumps too. Generally, the better the drape and thicker the fabric, the more effectively a body-con top will camouflage the extra bits.

Body-con tops are back as a nod to the ‘90s trend. They work extremely well tucked into on-trend roomier high-rise bottoms, higher rise bootcuts and flares, culottes, paper-bag waists, and flared midi skirts. They are good to layer under a blazer or jacket.

More of my clients than I expected are back in body con tops this year, especially those who like to be bang on trend because they work well with the new look roomier bottoms. We’ve had to give foundation garments more attention though, because you really need to wear the right bra with these types of tops, and some clients are in shapewear. You can’t wear a bra with a narrow band that cuts into the flesh of your back. You need a more supportive bra with a wide band that smooths out back flesh.

Tailored and fluid fits are my favourite and that’s what fills my wardrobe. But I bought seven body-con tops this year, all of which are fine or very fine gauge pullovers. I needed the change, and wear all the tops except the citron patterned top semi-tucked or tucked into roomier high-rise bottoms, bootcuts, flares, wide crops, flared midi skirts, and a paper-bag waist. I don’t wear them with body-con bottoms or a tight pencil skirt because that would be too much tight-all-over for this leg of my style journey. I like body-con tops best remixed with bottoms that move in motion. Here are my body-con tops.

Over to you. Are you wearing body-con tops?

Cowboy boots are officially back so giddy up with our edit of the best

Anybody want to watch Toy Story again?

cowboy boots

Grab the cowboy boots but leave the hat at home, Western style kicks are back with a vengeance this season. We spotted this autumn fashion trend everywhere at fashion shows and amongst the street style set, ranging from straight-out-of-Texas embroidered beauties to more minimal monochrome pieces. And luckily, loads of similar styles have just dropped in stores in time for the chilly weather.

Sported both on the runway and off, the likes of Calvin Klein, Fendi and Isabel Marant reinvented the classic silhouette with their AW18 shows earlier this year. Not everybody’s going to be super down for the traditional Western stitching and mid-calf lengths however, which is why we’ve noticed that ankle cowboy boots seem to be the way to go (and there’s certainly enough of them floating around at the moment).

We chatted with LIKEtoKNOW.it, a fashion discovery app, who’ve noticed that there’s been a huge spike in people saving and buying cowboy boots. There’s always going to be a time and place for a quintessential black cowboy boot, but we’ve got our eye on bolder styles this autumn.

Following the surge of summer interest in animal print pieces, the trend is still going strong with faux snakeskin, zebra and leopard print encouraging fashionistas to walk on the wild side this month.

Texture wise, you can never go wrong with a glossy or supple leather boot but Fendi’s faux croc kicks have definitely taken our interest. And when it comes to colours, we’re all about the white cowboy boot (who cares if it’s impractical?) and cherry red shades for those who really want to make a statement.

Here’s a selection of the most popular cowboy boots for women on LIKEtoKNOW.it and a few of our favourite picks below…

Cowboy Boots for Women

When our fashion editor Penny Goldstone walked in wearing these boots, I almost hit the floor. These gorgeous snake print booties from Find are everything and look way more expensive than they actually are. Lots of brands are doing their own take on faux snakeskin boots but I’ve gotta say, these are definitely the cream of the crop.

I stan a good high street purchase and these Topshop cowboy boots have completely won me over. Worn by blogger Nicole Ballardini of NickyInsideOut.com above, the brand pays homage to the classic Western details but balance it all out by keeping things monochrome.

So the moment I laid my eyes on these babies, I fell in love. It doesn’t get more AW18 than this, as Megan from meganvlt.com has nailed both the cowboy boot trend and the current animal print obsession all in one. Luckily, these Stradivarius kicks aren’t too expensive and more importantly — they’re still in stock.

White Cowboy Boots

It’s impossible to get away from white ankle boots this season, especially since everybody fell madly in love with those pointed BALENCIAGA boots everybody was wearing at fashion week. We’re pretty keen on the white pair that blogger Sinead Crowe is wearing above from & other stories.

I spoke to her via LIKEtoKNOW.it about the trend and she told us, ‘I’m loving these boots because they’re a super wearable take on the cowboy trend. I’ve been eyeing up cowboy boots for a while but never dared to try them out as I felt it was quite out there for my style. These are the perfect everyday boots that give a nod to the trend without being too out there!’

Prairie Chic Is Back, Even if the Past Wasn’t So Pretty

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Are bonnets the next Dad hats?

For some, the New York fashion world has begun to resemble a sewing circle. Prairie chic is in enough for the New York Times to declare that 2018 has birthed “a whole new breed of pioneer woman. Call her the Urban Prairie Girl (U.P.G?).”

You can spot a U.P.G. toughening up her high-neck collar, lace hemline, and floral printed frock with Fila sneakers or combat boots. Though she would find Laura Ingalls Wilder’s description of Native Americans in Little House on the Prairie offensive, the U.P.G. can’t help but cave to the nostalgia she feels watching the ‘70s television remake.

Lauryn Hill is adding some extra money to her bank account after her cousin was found guilty of swindling her out of $ 65,000. The Jasmine Brand reports that Hill loaned the money to her cousin, Gerald Hill with the condition that he would have to pay 10% interest if the money wasn’t given back in three months. Recently a judge found him guilty and now he must pay his cousin back.

When Lauryn realized that her cousin didn’t intend to pay her back she decided to take him to court. The two never signed a contract, but the judge decided to hold him accountable and ruled in Lauryn’s favor.

Lauryn recently made headlines after kicking Nas and Santigold off the tour and showing up late to shows. After getting sick, Lauryn decided to cancel several concerts until next year. We hope fans are able to get the show they paid for in the future.

Tisha Campbell-Martin Pays Over $100k To Buy Back Royalties In Bankruptcy Case

Tisha Campbell-Martin has reportedly reached a deal to buy back the rights to collect her royalties that she relinquished as part of her bankruptcy case.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Tisha and her estranged husband Duane Martin have reached a settlement with the trustee. She will reportedly pay $ 115,000 in two installments in order to obtain her residual rights. Martin will pay $ 60,000 in one installment and $ 55,000 in another within 90 days of a court’s approval of the settlement.

The former couple have been battling over the residuals for months and, as noted in the report, since the bankruptcy was filed, the trustee has collected $ 300,000 in royalties.

The docs state, “Since December 2017, the debtors have been in the process of ending their marriage and in February 2018, Ms. Campbell filed for divorce from Mr. Martin … In connection with that process and Ms. Campbell’s stated attempt to unravel a long history of Mr. Martin’s control over their joint finances, Ms. Campbell engaged new representation with regard to the dispute described in the Agreement.”

The actress previously accused her ex of hiding money from her during their marriage. She also told the trustee that during their marriage, Duane was responsible for managing all their financials, including collecting her residuals.

Campbell-Martin filed for divorce earlier this year after 20 years of marriage. She and Duane were reportedly legally separated in December 2016.

Bye Bye Millennial Pink, Hot Pink Is Back And Burning Bright

As the Daily Mail helpfully pointed out this week, “Kim Kardashian wears head-to-toe hot pink repeatedly.” Since early August, Kardashian has sported the color “SIX times,” whether it be on a Yeezy mini, $ 2850 Balenciaga leggings, or Chanel unitard.

The mogul is less thinking pink and more willing herself to become a walking Barbie doll. Where millennial pink detached the typically feminine hue from its gender implications, Kardashian’s color pulls those attachments into one big, girly hug.

Perhaps in a moment of girl power solidarity with her sister, this week Khloe Kardashian wore her own take on the hue, pairing it with a boxy blazer in an Instagram post.

The first episode ‘Take My Baby’ will explore the adoption industry and the multi-million dollar business of mothers selling their newborn babies, whilst the second installment is entitled ‘Maximum Love’ and will see Louis travel to Portland, the US capital of polyamory and ethical non-monogamy.
The series concludes in California with the episode ‘Choosing Death’ in which Louis explores the six American states that allows the terminally ill to choose to end their lives on their own terms.
In a statement, Louis said: “I have always been interested in how people conduct the most intimate aspects of their lives. For this series we looked at the new ways Americans are approaching some of humanity’s oldest dilemmas: pregnant mums who feel unequipped to keep their babies and so pick new parents for them; the world of polyamory aka ‘ethical non-monogamy’; and people with debilitating conditions who opt to hasten their own deaths.”
Louis has been given “extraordinary levels of access” for the three-part special and admits it was a “privilege” to be able to tell the stories of the people featured in the programme.
Louis added: “All of these stories have something a touch utopian about them, involving a kind of idealism and forward thinking that brings new opportunities but also new risks.
“I have been given extraordinary levels of access to courageous people and families across the United States, many of them enduring unbelievable levels of stress and anguish, and it was a privilege to be allowed into their lives in this most personal way.”
Louis achieved success and received critical acclaim for his shows ‘Weird Weekends’ – which ran from 1998-2000 – and ‘When Louis Met…’ which saw him profile several celebrities, including now controversial figures Jimmy Savile and Max Clifford.
‘Altered States’ will air later this year with an official date yet to be announced although he has hinted himself it will hit screens in November.
