Simon Cowell mocked for being less likeable than David Williams as Britain’s Got Talent judges compete in Weird Crushes game behind the scenes

SIMON Cowell will learn a harsh truth that he’s not as likeable as co-star David Walliams during tonight’s Britain’s Got More Talent.

The BGT judges take a break from filming more show-stopping auditions to play the popular Weird Crushes card game, which features both Simon and David.

The Britain’s Got Talent judges are in hysterics as they play card game, Weird Crushes

The game ranks different male celebrities on their charisma, likeability, sex appeal, style, and fame.

While Simon outranks David on charisma by one point, he is defeated by a large margin on the likeability category.

Initially trying to bluff his way out of it by lying about his score, Simon reluctantly admits he was scored just two points, while David landed a much stronger four.

Co-stars Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon laughed hysterically as the boys tried to prove who was king of the panel.

Tonight’s episode of Britain’s Got Talent will see a knife-throwing act take aim at Simon Cowell, leaving judge Amanda Holden, 48, and the auditions audience gasping in shock.

Andrei admitted: “This was high stakes. It was more dangerous because I didn’t know what Simon would do.

“I know my partner. She knows not to be scared and not to move.

“But I didn’t know if Simon might move. I worried I might leave him seriously injured.

“I had small nerves. I’m a professional, I must be ready and keep my focus.”

Explaining why he took up the challenge Simon, 59, said: “I wanted to feel what it’s like. It is terrifying.”

Judge David Walliams, 47, told Andrei: “You could’ve killed him when you had the chance.”

Britain’s Got Talent returns tonight on ITV at 8pm.

Seacrest’s nod to his availability comes days after he and Taylor, 27, were spotted taking a walk together in Beverly Hills on Saturday, April 13. The former twosome — who split in February after nearly three years together — were all smiles during their stroll.

We’ve had two lessons. I’m starting to get the point where it’s frustrating, but I’m trying keep my cool. We will, on a date night, eventually attempt to do it somewhere for fun. She said: “Why did the rejection of the modelling industry get to me so much?

“I think the answer is that these rejections were based on how I looked and I had always prided myself on a healthy amount of self-confidence which I was now rapidly losing.

“The real nail in the coffin was when I finally got through to a fitting for a show and the designer handed me a pair of breeches and I couldn’t get them past my calf muscles, which are pronounced because I’m a runner.

“The designer looked surprised and embarrassed as he said, “Sorry, it’s just we’re not used to girls who exercise”, implying that the models he was expecting dieted themselves in order to fit into his clothes.

Lil Nas X Tops Billboard Hot 100 With ‘Old Town Road’ After Being Removed From Country Charts

Lil Nas X is redefining country music and causing people to ask serious questions about the genre’s racial roots with his song “Old Town Road.” The song originally entered music streaming sites under the country genre (with many defining it as country rap or Trap music) but was booted off the Billboard country charts. The song had been holding steady at number 15 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and has now jumped to number one.

After Billboard removed the song from country music charts controversy broke out. Celebrities weighed in including Justin Bieber and Will Smith. Miley Cyrus’ father ended up doing a remix of the song. It’s interesting to note that Miley Cyrus, the goddaughter of Dolly Parton, was once viewed as country music’s darling (especially with her rendition of Dolly’s Jolene), but then embraced hip-hop.

Miley sparked controversy with her country music fans when Mike WiLL Made-It released “23” featuring Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa & Juicy J. Now it is her own father, Billy Ray Cyrus, who not only defended Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road but sang several verses in the remix.

Now, fans have come forward to say that after Billboard removed the song from the country charts, they bought Lil Nas X’s original version, propelling it to climb the charts. “Old Town Road” knocked Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” from the top spot.

“Old Town Road” has become a viral hit and resulted in Lil Nas X getting signed with Columbia. The remix is just as popular and has introduced more country fans to country rap.

Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus are both active on social media sites and anyone who really wants to get into the discussion about the evolution of country music and whether “Old Town Road” is truly a country song will find plenty of people weighing in on social media.

Some have suggested that Lil Nas X is a one-hit wonder with his viral song but he adamantly states that he is not.

Billy Ray Cyrus had a number one hit with the viral-worthy song “Achy Breaky Heart.” Now that he has joined in on the remix, people are wondering if that song too will break into the charts and become another number one hit.ee

What do you think of Lil Nas X and “Old Town Road?” Are you surprised the song climbed to number one after being removed from the country music charts?

The $1 Menu Is the Quickest Way to Being Broke – 5 Lies That Keep You in Debt

We all have those lies, large and small, we tell ourselves to justify why we do the things that we do. The reality is, however, that every single decision we make is either helping us or hurting us. There really isn’t much grey area there. Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not now, really doesn’t matter. Our long-term financial standing will inevitably show us what we found important during our short-term decision making.

5 Lies That Keep You in Debt

1. I deserve it.

Do you work hard? Of course you do. Do you deserve to indulge every once in awhile?  Maybe. The question is, however, whether a new dress is really worth you staying in debt? Sometimes you may need to ask yourself, “As much as I deserve… don’t I deserve to be debt free even more?”

If you answer,No, I deserve to work my entire adult life and still end up with nothing at the age of retirement,” then continue on. Buy all the dresses you want. Remember It’s the constant conversation you have with yourself to justify unnecessary spending on an ongoing basis that hurts you.

2. But, this is an emergency. . . isn’t it?

Let’s be clear about what emergencies are. Merriam-Webster defines the term emergency as “A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.” With that being said, dipping into your emergency fund for items that you were fully aware were coming up is not an emergency. It’s important to make every expense a line item on your budget, even those things that are quarterly or annual expenditures such as car registration or dues.

3. It was on sale!

We’ve all fallen for this one at one time or another. The reality is most people are in debt because of stuff. It’s impossible to get out of debt if you are committed to buying more and more stuff instead of truly being financially free.

One way to avoid this trap is to stop walking around the mall and “window shopping” or curtail online shopping. Perhaps it’s time to unsubscribe from tempting emails with the “great deals” in your email box  or texted to you each morning. Instead of convincing yourself that you’re saving, begin to ask yourself, “Do I really need this?”

Remember that buying something you don’t need is never better than saving money for your actual needs.

4. A couple of bucks won’t hurt.

I heard someone say once that the $ 1 menu is the quickest way to being broke. It’s the small charges that add up and inevitably break the bank. I have more clients that get caught up in $ 34 overdraft fees for a quick $ 5 swipe at the gas station than anything else.

Again, it’s important that even with the small purchases, you ask yourself, “Do I really need this?”

5. If I made more money, this would be easier.

No it wouldn’t. Without discipline, you could double your income and still have tons of debt and no savings. Don’t assume that more money is the answer. We’ve all heard of the entertainers, athletes and my favorite, lottery winners, who end up flat broke and in deep debt despite having access to tons of money at one point.

Wealth is about a mindset. No matter what your financial goals are today, get real with yourself.

Everyone’s Talking About This Scrappy High School Play That Went Viral for Being Cool

A high school play is scoring some major buzz staging an unlikely flick: Ridley Scott’s 1979 hit movie Alien.

And from the looks of the lighting and costume design, New Jersey’s North Bergen High School put on quite the show.

They brought the film to life onstage for two nights only, Friday and Saturday.

That’s a short stint, but it was filled with enough dazzling visuals and a student-cut trailer that it’s made a lasting impression.

At the center of the spotlight of “Alien: The Play,” there’s a truly elaborate “xenomorph” costume that thrust the production into social media relevance.

The over-the-top extraterrestrial effects and sixteen students carried this show, which looks like it was as sheer, exuberant fun.

After 17-year-old student and crew member Justin Pierson posted a thread on reddit, users quickly rocketed the thread up the ranks.

“My school did a play version of Alien. Here’s a picture from opening night last night,” he wrote.

Some celebrities are already clamoring for the treat to make the jump to Broadway.

And it all hews closely to its source in both spirit and style. “It follows exactly like the movie with a few scenes added to kill time for scene changes,” according to the thread.

Without having a front row seat to the performance, one thing is clear.

This is one scrappy team. Working with a shoestring budget, students constructed the iconic alien costume with a plastic skeleton purchased on sale and some donated foam.

The English teacher Perfecto Cuervo adapted the script from the movie and helmed the production as director while art teacher Steve Defendini oversaw the set designs and costumes.

Pop culture may have toasted the science fiction film before, but this might be the most charming example.

Even the official Twitter account for the original movie weighed in on the natural opportunity to comment on the fact that the cinematic masterpiece has managed to hold our attention for four decades.

“We are impressed! 40 years and still going strong…”

Online critics agree: It’s a smash. Judging from the enthusiastic response, this may not be the last we’ve seen of this rag tag team.

How to Earn Respect without Being a Jerk

We can all be jerks sometimes, however, if you truly want to earn respect, this can’t be a permanent state and you have to change.

“Respect” Defined

Respect is a feeling of deep admiration elicited by someone’s qualities behavior, actions, or achievements. Basically, it’s something we all want from other people but it’s not something you can easily demand. In fact, openly trying to command respect from others can be interpreted as being insecure and that, in turn, will earn you even less respect.

What It Means To Be A Jerk

Let’s quickly touch on the points on what it means to be a jerk so you can avoid those things.

  • A typical jerk can’t handle any kind of criticism and typically, they care more about winning an argument than anything else. Typically, they only talk about themselves and they’re willing to dismiss others, their feelings, or their needs in order to get what they want.
A jerk is self-centered
  • Jerks often deliberately use insults and name-calling to keep other people down and they often believe that they’re at the position in life just because of their own merit and they never had any kind of help.
  • Most jerks often think they’re the victim or they were blamed by others and they have to stand up for themselves and they also assume that life, in general, is a zero-sum game and they just want to come out ahead no matter the cost.

While some jerks may be successful in achieving what they want in the short term, in the long term, they will always lose any kind of respect; so here’s what to do instead.

9 Ways To Earn Respect Without Being A Jerk

1.Do Not Walk Away From Conflicts

An easy way to earn respect is by not walking away from conflicts but accepting it at what it is and doing so in a graceful manner. So what does it mean? You speak up when it’s necessary, either for yourself or even more so for others. If you think something is wrong, say something, don’t just shut up.

Do not give in to peer pressure
Do not give in to peer pressure

2. Be Immune To Peer Pressure

I know it’s always easy to fit in and speaking up can be hard but often, in a group, there is a certain dynamic that makes you do things that you will later regret. Most of the time, people don’t look up to Joe average, instead, they respect leaders that swim against the stream and maybe say something that could be interpreted as unpopular at the moment but in line with their beliefs and value system. So that means you have to be your own person and consider yourself as the decision-maker in your life and not as someone who is controlled by others or mainstream movements and you just have to tag along.

3. Embrace Criticism

I know, even the most confident people sometimes struggle with criticism especially when they’ve worked really hard on something and put everything they had into it. Criticism can hurt especially if it’s voiced in an absolute way and no other positives are mentioned, however, if you shift your mindset from criticism being a form to put you down to criticism being a tool to making you better, things all of a sudden change.

In my experience, failure and criticisms are key components to growth, not only in your business but also on a personal level. Most people don’t try to be jerks intentionally and they do something that annoys others. If they know about it, they can change the behavior, learn from it, and grow from it. It may hurt in a moment but it will make them a better person down the line.

4. Accept That Not Everybody Will Like You

Yes, we all want to be liked and to be liked, you have to be likable in the first place. However, at the end of the day, we all have our value system and if you stand up to those values, there will inevitably be people that you disappoint and that is okay and you have to be okay with that.

Assertive & Aggressive
Assertive versus Aggressive

5. Know The Subtle Difference Between Being Assertive & Aggressive

Being assertive means that you’re not a pushover when people try to talk you into something, you think about it and you speak your mind, you bring arguments, pros, and cons, why you make your decision in a certain way and you leave it at that.

Being aggressive means you raise your voice, you may use physical intimidation, or try to simply put others down with your presence.

6. Give Up Trying To Be Right All The Time

I know it feels good to be right which is one of the reasons I probably went to law school because most lawyers want to be right, however, if you just try to be right to win an argument, it will damage your relationships long term because people don’t want to be around you, they don’t want to discuss things with you because they think that you’re never open to constructive criticism and arguments and you will never change your mind anyway.

If you argue, ask yourself, why am i arguing? Do I just wanna win the argument or is there a deeper thing behind it that I want to achieve? Also, keep in mind that we all think of ourselves more highly than of others. In surveys, people always think they are smarter than others or that they have better motivations than others, that they’re more careful than others, this is called the blame bias and just knowing that we automatically assume other people are less smart than we are or that they made a mistake just means that you’re often judging them in a way that is not fair.

So, if you want to earn respect, rather than just blaming others or assuming that others are stupid, think about what you may have done that is not super obvious that may have contributed to the negative outcome.

7. Keep An Open Mind

Your mind is open and you’re willing to change your opinion based on facts that are presented to you. Jerks, in particular, are often very stubborn and unable to accept different opinions or facts and they always want to argue in a way and just be right. By falling into this trap, you deny yourself any ability to grow and to get better.

Also, other people will notice that they will look at you as a person who is stuck in their ways, who is never going to change, and they will not try to use you to promote something in a company that needs adaptive performance, change, or innovation.

8. Do Not Be Afraid To Show Your Vulnerabilities

At first, it may seem counterintuitive because you think “oh if I’m perceived as a strong leader, people respect me more”, however, if you are a strong leader and you’re very confident and secure with who you are, you have no problems with sharing your struggles along the way because that will give people a path and perspective showing them that you struggled but you nevertheless succeeded and it makes them be more hopeful about their own lives.

At the same time, they will have something going on in their lives right now that bothers them and if they can see that you also have something that bothers you, they don’t feel alone and they feel more normal which in turn, enables them to become better.

Always keep in mind, everyone has problems but by being the leader and sharing your own vulnerabilities and putting yourself in a light that is not super favorable, you become more human and people will respect you more. Also, it can be a way to be really funny without hurting anyone else and people will look at you and respect you more for it.

9. Analyze Your Problems & Act On Them

Last but not least, one good way to earn respect is to analyze your problems and to act on them. If you are unhappy with your relationship, don’t just complain about
it, talk to your partner about it, maybe go to relationship counseling and also look at yourself and how you can change to achieve what you really want.

CONCLUSION

So in a nutshell, take control. Don’t blame others and don’t waste your lifetime. if you follow these nine techniques and you speak like a gentleman, I truly believe you will earn more and more respect at your workplace, in your neighborhood, or in your community, and wherever you are where you are in contact with people. People will look up to you and when you’re in a situation where you need something, people will be much more willing to help you than if you’ve always been a jerk because then, you’re on your own.

‘Don’t Be Tardy’ Recap: Kim Calls Kroy ‘Stupid’ for Being With Her

Age is just a number! Just prior to turning 40 last May, Kim Zolciak Biermann was not happy about it and opened up about her aging grievances on the Friday, March 8, episode of ‘Don’t Be Tardy.’

Kim Zolciak-Biermann’s Best Comebacks

“Do you ever get mad at him for being 32?” Personal chef Tracey Bloom bluntly confronted Kim about her and husband Kroy Biermann’s age difference ahead of Kim’s 40th birthday, chuckling that the former NFL player had “eight more years” before he turned 40. Without a beat, Kim replied, “Why would you marry someone that’s so much older than you? That’s so stupid. You could have married some 22-year-old teeny bopper.”

In a light-hearted testimonial shot with husband Kroy, Kim joked, “I’m very vain. Everything’s getting older. Like, at 60 my titties are gonna sag, but he’ll pick ‘em up for me.” When Tracey then asked if Kim had any reason to look forward to getting older, the mother of six replied bluntly, “No. What is there to look forward to?” She then joked, “Because you get ‘wiser’? No, I’m good.”

The episode also followed the Biermanns as they made their way to a food truck festival while researching their newest business venture, a coffee truck. The family’s initial excitement was brutally knocked down to reality when Kim and Kroy talked with successful food truck owners who lamented their 20-hour work weeks. One owner opened up about suffering a heart attack while working, which appeared to be the final straw for Kroy.

Dont Be Tardy Recap Brielle Bierman Ariana Double Date
Brielle Bierman on ‘Don’t Be Tardy.’

Former ‘RHOA’ Stars: Where Are They Now?

Kroy, who’s taken a step back since his high profile football career, opened up about his next move, saying, “Playing football in the NFL was really a huge time commitment.” He added that if he worked long hours again he would, “miss my kids’ life. … 20 hours and heart attacks? We’re not doing that.” Kim agreed that putting the coffee truck idea on hold was for the best, saying, “I know we’re gonna be successful. Whatever we touch turns to gold, but, I’m also a realist.”

Brielle Biermann spent the majority of the episode opening up about her dating life following her March 2018 split with baseball player Michael Kopech. Brielle shared a flirty burger date with high school ex-boyfriend, Slade Osborne, and even went on a trampoline double date with younger sister Ariana’s boyfriend’s older brother, Parker.

‘Real Housewives’ Kids, Then and Now

While sparks weren’t exactly flying with Parker, the busy 21-year-old teased the idea of reuniting with Slade, saying, “I never go back, always go forward, but I don’t know if that will be the case with Slade.” When Slade asked Brielle about her breakup with Michael, Brielle opened up saying, “We literally have not talked since the day we broke up.” She added brightly, “I did not like him near as much as I liked you.”

‘Don’t Be Tardy’ airs on Bravo Fridays at 9 p.m. ET.

Adtalem Global Education CEO Lisa Wardell on Being Intentional In Your Career

Lisa Wardell is the president and CEO of Adtalem Global Education and is on the 2019 Black Enterprise “The Most Powerful Women in Corporate America” list. Wardell is the only black women CEO of an S&P 500 company.

Intentionality is a term we hear frequently in business, but it’s originally a philosophical term. It’s defined as “the quality of mental states (e.g., thoughts, beliefs, desires, hopes) that consists in their being directed toward some object or state of affairs.” To me, that means purposefully putting thoughts into actions to drive measurable results.

I have attempted to be intentional in my career by performing well in my current position, and by consistently seeking feedback and incorporating that guidance into my professional life. I seek out mentors to help me build my leadership skills, and use sponsors to assist me in advancing my career. I also set goals for one, three, and five years out, and regularly revisit those goals to keep myself on track.

As the president and CEO of Adtalem Global Education, I have the opportunity to practice intentionality on a much larger stage, leading a nearly $ 3 billion organization of 18,000 people. I seek intentionality on three focus areas: creating a performance culture, effecting diversity and inclusion, and solidifying our mission-driven focus. Measurement is an important part of being intentional, and in creating a performance culture to meet our objectives, I’ve tied executive compensation to both diversity and inclusion outcomes and to the pursuit of top talent; for top talent is intentional about their own performance and in leading teams that do so with the organization’s mission in view.

Intentionality in our three focus areas is reflected in our financial performance—Adtalem’s stock price has more than tripled in 2.5 years—and intentionality is reflected in our leading education policies, academic standards, and life-long learning programs that contribute to the global workforce in a meaningful way.

Active intentionality isn’t always easy to accomplish; even CEOs get push back. When I said I wanted every recruiting search to include ethnically diverse candidates, I was told there may not be enough qualified candidates to accomplish that goal. Of course, we know better and our organization reflects it. Our board of directors is now 44% African American and 67% combined women and people of color (POC). The Adtalem leadership team has gone from nominally diverse to 40% POC, 47% women, and 80% combined. And our pipeline of talent for future leaders is deep and growing. Recruiting is aided because talented, diverse candidates flock to a talented and diverse workforce.

EMPLOYMENT UPDATE:

Hannah Gadsby Is ‘Comfortable’ Not Being Funny in First Stand-up Set After ‘Nanette’

Ben King/Netflix

In the early 1700s, a physician named James Douglas, a quasi-famous midwife known for performing public dissections of female pelvises in his home, came across a wrinkle of uterine flesh he hadn’t seen before. The region was a tiny cavity, sort of like a kangaroo’s flap, which expands if a woman needs more room during pregnancy. The doctor called his anatomical New World the “Pouch of Douglas.” Medical dictionaries describe Douglas’ revelation as “an extension of peritoneum between the posterior wall of uterus and the rectum in females,” but it’s basically a reproductive crawl-space. As findings go, it’s about as close as you can get to discovering nothing. In comedian Hannah Gadsby’s latest stand-up set, a work-in-progress which runs through March 9 at the Hayworth Theater in L.A., she compares the little flap to the extra zipper on a suitcase. “It’s a potential space,” she told the crowd. Gadsby’s calling her new show “Douglas.”

If there’s a specific subtext behind the choice to name her set after the nothing-discovery of an 18th century pelvis dissector, Gadsby doesn’t mention it outright. Douglas is also the name of her dog. But the new show arrives on the heels of Nanette, a comedy special which aired on Netflix last summer, sending waves through the think-piece internet and comedy Twitterverse. The special, for those who managed not to hear about it, had nothing to do with the name Nanette, and everything to do with a problem Gadsby saw in her industry—namely, an expectation that comedy minorities make themselves the butt of the joke. The polarizing show, which begins as a fairly unremarkable set, before taking a serious twist into Gadsby’s account of a hate crime, prompted two tiresome debates: one over whether it heralded the end of stand-up, and another over whether it constituted stand-up at all. But whatever the special meant for its genre, Nanette signaled something fairly straightforward about Gadsby’s career: “I’m quitting,” she told the crowd. She didn’t, as it turns out. And in Douglas, the comic is workshopping what, exactly, not-quitting looks like.

“It’s hard to know what this show should be,” Gadsby told the audience Thursday night, “because I quit comedy.” Douglas is a work-in-progress at its most fundamental. (“This is rough as guts,” she says at one point, “but I feel pretty comfortable, because Nanette wasn’t funny, and, well…”) A willfully half-finished ninety minutes of performance, it’s almost admirably sloppy. Gadsby zig-zags between subjects, goes on long tangents, cuts herself off mid-sentence, drops huge, sometimes hackneyed, personal bombshells, and practices crowd-work to varying, occasionally laborious, degrees of success. But with any rough draft, the audience bears witness to all the potential versions a piece might become, and in Douglas, Gadsby seemed to be staring down two possible paths.

After her whirlwind, $ 200,000 baby shower last week, Meghan Markle left New York with the word “Mummy” hanging from her neck in 18-karat gold.

Royal watchers and fashion writers assumed the $ 850 Jennifer Meyer necklace had been a gift from friends. (Though Gayle King, who had been invited to the soiree, told CBS This Morning that Markle was waiting to open her presents at home in England, with Prince Harry at her side.)

How Markle received the piece is a minor detail. A matter of more urgency loomed large: How can you buy it, too?

Patriots Owner Robert Kraft Is Being Charged With Soliciting Prostitution as Part of Florida Sex Trafficking Crackdown

(JUPITER, Fla.) — New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft faces misdemeanor charges of soliciting a prostitute after he was twice videotaped in a sex act at a Florida massage parlor, police said Friday in a case that could get him in trouble with the NFL.

The 77-year-old Kraft denied any wrongdoing.

He was not immediately arrested. Jupiter police said a warrant will be issued and his attorneys will be notified. They said details about the charges against the owner of the Super Bowl champion team will not be released until next week.

The charge comes amid a crackdown on sex trafficking from Palm Beach to Orlando in which police planted cameras in massage parlors.

Hundreds of arrest warrants have been issued in recent days as a result of a six-month investigation, and more are expected. Ten spas have been closed, and several people have been taken into custody on sex trafficking charges.

Jupiter police Chief Daniel Kerr said he was shocked to learn that Kraft, who is worth $ 6 billion, was paying for sex inside a shopping-center massage parlor, the Orchids of Asia Day Spa. “We are as equally stunned as everyone else,” Kerr said.

Most people charged for the first time with soliciting a prostitute in Florida are allowed to enter a diversion program, said attorney David Weinstein, a former prosecutor. Kraft would probably have to perform 100 hours of community service and attend a course on the harmful effects of prostitution and sex trafficking, he said.

The NFL did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Under league policy, players, owners, coaches and other employees can be punished for “conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in” the NFL.

“Ownership and club or league management have traditionally been held to a higher standard and will be subject to more significant discipline,” the policy says.

The Patriots won the Super Bowl this month over the Los Angeles Rams for their sixth NFL championship in the past 18 seasons, making them the most successful team in pro sports during that span. Before the Super Bowl, several retired NFL players appeared in a public service announcement decrying sexual exploitation and human trafficking in Atlanta, the host city.

Kraft lives in Massachusetts and has a home in the Palm Beach area. Though he is a Democrat, he is friendly with President Donald Trump and a frequent guest at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. Kraft’s wife, Myra Hiatt Kraft, died in 2011. He has been dating 39-year-old actress Ricki Noel Lander since 2012.

“Well it’s very sad. I was very surprised to see it. He’s proclaimed his innocence, totally,” Trump said at the White House on Friday. “But I’m very surprised to see it.”

In a statement, Kraft’s representatives said they “categorically deny that Mr. Kraft engaged in any illegal activity.”

The spa Kraft allegedly visited is in a busy, upper-middle-class shopping center with neighbors that include a dentist, a real estate office, surf and bike shops and a Publix supermarket.

Vero Beach police Chief David Currey, whose agency has been involved in the sex-trafficking investigation, told reporters earlier this week that the prostitutes are victims who have been trapped into the trade.

“These girls are there all day long, into the evening. They can’t leave and they are performing sex acts,” Currey said, according to TCPalm. “Some of them may tell us they’re OK, but they’re not.”

Kraft, who made his initial fortune through a packaging company, bought the Patriots in 1994 for $ 172 million to keep the team from moving to St. Louis. He hired Bill Belichick as coach in 2000, and the team later drafted quarterback Tom Brady, launching its nearly two decades of success.

In 2007, the Patriots got in trouble for filming other teams’ signals. The NFL fined the team $ 250,000 and Belichick $ 500,000. In 2014, Brady was accused of delating game footballs to gain a better grip. He served a four-game suspension, and the Patriots were fined $ 1 million.

Kraft was not implicated in either scandal.

Mandy Moore Accuses Ex-Husband Ryan Adams of Being Psychologically Abusive

Mandy Moore is speaking out against her ex-husband, Ryan Adams. In a new exposé published in the New York Times, seven women — including the This Is Us star — have come forward with stories accusing the music producer of emotional abuse and/or sexual misconduct.

“Music was a point of control for him,” Moore, 34, told the Times in the article published on Wednesday, February 13. The “Candy” songstress met Adams, 44, when she was at a pivotal point in her career, looking to put her teen popstar years in the past and move forward with more credible work.

“He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician, because you don’t play an instrument,’” Moore continued, noting that the two would write songs together which Adams promised to record, but ultimately never followed through. The A Walk to Remember actress added that he’d book them time in the studio, just to replace her with other women.

“His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” Moore said, telling the outlet she considered the ways he lashed out to be psychologically abusive.

The Times reports that Adams, through his lawyer, referred to Moore’s depiction of their relationship to be “completely inconsistent with his view of the relationship.” He added that he supported her “well-deserved professional success.” His lawyer stated that Adams was happy to assist her in her career and did not come in the way of her working with others in the industry.

Adams took to Twitter hours after the Times piece was published to share this thoughts on the accusations. “But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate,” he wrote, in part. “Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false.”

Moore filed for divorce from the former Whiskeytown frontman in January 2015 after six years of marriage. She opened up about their rocky marriage during an interview with Glamour published in October 2018, revealing she felt “spiritually and fundamentally stuck” before calling it quits.

“I didn’t choose the right person,” she told the magazine.“I don’t feel guilty for [the divorce]. I don’t fault myself for it. When people said, ‘I’m sorry,’ I was, like, ‘No. Sorry would have been had I stayed in a very unhealthy situation.’ I didn’t. I found my way out. And when I did, things opened back up again.”

Adams addressed Moore’s comments in a social media post at the time. “She didn’t like the Melvins or BladeRunner,” he wrote in a Tweet. “Doomed from the start … If only I could remember the start lol.”

Adams’ ex-fiancée, Meghan Butterworth, artist Courtney Jaye and singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers were among the others who detailed their stories about the musician to The New York Times.

After Being Released From Custody, Chris Brown Plans To Sue Rape Accuser For Defamation

Chris Brown was released from a Parisian jail on Tuesday hours after news reports circulated that a woman accused the R&B star of rape. Now, Brown’s lawyer Raphael Chiche, says the singer is gearing up for a lawsuit to clear his name.

“Chris Brown is free. No lawsuits were filed against him,” a tweet from Chiche read. “He vigorously challenges the charges against him. A complaint for slanderous denunciation will be filed tomorrow with the public prosecutor of Paris.”

He later followed it up with the following tweet: “I’m preparing the complaint #ChrisBrown will file against his accuser.”

The story takes a swift turn after it was initially reported that Brown, and two associates were arrested in connection with aggravated rape and drug charges. The arrest stems from a report a 24-year-old woman filed where she claimed she was sexually violated when she returned to the Mandarin Oriental hotel with Brown and a group of friends after a night of partying in a Parisian club. The assault reportedly took place on the evening of January 15 going into January 16.

French authorities had 48-hours to determine whether they will press charges or release him from jail. Brown and his associates who were detained, could have stayed in jail during the duration of the investigation if authorities felt they were a flight risk. According to a statement Chiche made to outlet Entertainment Tonight, the police investigation is still ongoing.

The charges against Chris Brown have not been dropped and investigations are still going on, but Chris Brown has not been sued by prosecution,” Chiche said.

On Tuesday Brown maintained his innocence by posting a now deleted Instagram message, claiming his innocence.

“I WANNA MAKE IT PERFECTLY CLEAR…… THIS IS FALSE AND A WHOLE LOT OF CAP! NNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!! FOR MY DAUGHTER AND MY FAMILY THIS IS SO DISPRESPECTFUL AND IS AGAINST MY CHARACTER AND MORALS!!!!!” Brown wrote.

The case adds to Brown’s long list of legal troubles that he’s sustained over the last 10 years.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

‘This Is Much Bigger Than Basketball.’ NBA’s Enes Kanter Opens Up About Being Wanted by Turkey

New York Knicks center Enes Kanter is the only NBA player who, in the eyes of the government of his home country, is an international fugitive.

Prosecutors from Turkey have sought a warrant for Kanter’s arrest, and are seeking his extradition from the United States. Kanter’s a vocal critic of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan; he supports Fethullah Gulen, the cleric living in exile in Pennsylvania, whom the Turkish government believes was behind an attempted 2016 coup to overthrow Erdogan. Turkey has accused Kanter of being part of terrorist group, and revoked his passport in 2017.

Right before going to his suburban New York apartment to watch his teammates take on the Washington Wizards in London Thursday — Kanter skipped the game, which the Wizards won 101-100, because he feared assassination while overseas— the 26-year-old talked to TIME about fear, death threats, and messages for both his enemies and family back home.

[The conversation has been condensed and slightly edited for clarity]

Do you feel like a fugitive right now?

It’s weird. I put out on Twitter that the only thing I terrorize is the rim. People know me, my teammates know me, everybody knows me. That’s why when the government puts a statement out there and says, ‘Oh, he’s a terrorist,’ my teammates laugh actually. They literally laugh. All my friends were laughing. They’re like ‘What is this? This is ridiculous. If they call you a terrorist, they’re crazy.’

Are you scared?

They put my name on Interpol on the red notice. So if I step outside of America, my life will be in danger. But I feel safe in America.

So you can walk around freely here? You’re not in hiding?

Our team security said, even if you go to a supermarket, have someone with you. So everywhere I go — grocery shopping, practice, go to games, go to plays — I always have someone with me because you never know, a lone wolf, one of the crazy Erdogan supporters will do something. The only place I go alone is the bathroom. Just the bathroom.

If you get extradited, what do you think will happen to you?

Ooof. It will be very ugly, man. I don’t know if they can kill me, because there will be so much pressure on him. But there have been lots of reports out there that they torture people in jails. So they will definitely torture me very, very bad.

What kind of torture would you expect?

Ugh. I have no idea. But I know that after that torture, I will not be able to play basketball again.

What’s your main criticism of Erdogan?

Erdogan is an authoritarian leader who jails journalists and the opposition. He’s an anti-American leader who keeps American citizens as hostages, like Mr. Brunson, the pastor. Erdogan violates human rights. About 17,000 innocent women, and around 700 babies have been kept in jail with no due process. So he uses his power to abuse human rights. If you look at it right now, Turkey is the number one country in the world for putting the most journalists into jail, after the coup attempt. That shows there’s no freedom of speech in Turkey. Don’t get me wrong, I love my country, I love my flag, I love my people. Turkey could be the bridge between modern Islam and the West. But now that all this stuff is happening in Turkey, that’s impossible.

What’s your message to Erdogan?

I would just tell him to stop. Stop abusing innocent people. Stop abusing all journalists. Stop abusing women and babies. He’s killing the county. There is no democracy in the country right now. There is no freedom of speech. I cannot even invite my teammates to Turkey because they’re scared. Turkey was a peaceful county, Turkey was a lovely county. But because of all the things that are happening right now, I mean … look at my family. I cannot even bring my family to America, because they are not letting them leave the country.

Leave the innocent people alone. Not just my family. People know my story because I play in the NBA. There are thousands and thousands of stories out there way worse waiting to be heard. Please, please. Not just me and my family. Leave all the innocent people alone.

Another former NBA player, Hedo Turkoglu, is now a chief adviser to Erdogan. He’s criticized you on Twitter. What’s your message to him?

I called him a lapdog because he has to follow every comment that Erdogan gives him. We were really good friends back in 2011. We played on the same national team. All the stuff that’s going on right now, he cannot really talk freely because of his fear of President Erdogan. He’s losing so many fans, so many friends in America because of what he’s doing.

In an op-ed you wrote for the Washington Post, why did you cite Colin Kaepernick as an inspiration?

He basically sacrificed a lot of things to talk about issues. If you’re an athlete —not just an athlete, actors, singers — you need to talk about these kinds of issues, because you have that big platform. And millions and millions of fans are following you. So what he did was definitely amazing.

What is this costing you?

My family. [Eds note: Kanter’s father, mother, and sister remain in Turkey. His father faces criminal charges for connections to an alleged terrorist group]. That’s the most important thing. Because the last time I saw my family was 2015. Sometimes I even forget what they look like, you know? It’s so hard to communicate with them. Because Turkish police raided my house. They took electronics away, computers away. They wanted to see if I’m still in contact with my family or not. Any single text, they will all be in jail.

Does it disappoint you that Erdogan and President Trump seem to have a good relationship?

I don’t really know what’s happening behind the doors to be honest with you. They can tweet or they can say whatever they want, but I don’t really know what’s happening behind the curtains. That’s why I wish I could meet with Trump and talk about all these issues. Talk about all the abuses that Erdogan is doing to human rights.

Have you reached out to Trump?

I want to reach out to him. I don’t know how. If you put this out there, maybe he will read it and we’ll get a meeting with him.

Have you been getting more death threats in recent days?

I used to get death threats at least once or twice a week. Now, because of all this, the last three or four days, I’ve been probably getting hundreds and hundreds a day. I don’t count. Our Knicks security guy told me to take a screenshot of them, send them to us. It got to the point where there were so many of them. I’m like, ‘You know what, I’m not going to even bother doing it.’

Are you numb to them by now, or do they still cause concern?

I’m 6’11, around 245 pounds. But those are death threats man, you have to take them seriously. One of the crazy Erdogan supporters might come and do something and you cannot control it. The government cannot control a lone wolf. It’s scary.

Where are you going to watch the Knicks-Wizards game?

I’m actually going to watch it in my apartment. I’m going to put my jersey on. Because I want to feel like I’m still part of the team. I go there and look at their Instagram stories. I’m still in a group chat. When they say, ‘We’re going to the mall, we’re going to eat, who wants to go to dinner tonight,’ it’s breaking my heart..

What impact is your uncertain basketball status — your playing time is down as the Knicks try to develop younger players — having on all of this?

It is very stressful. Trade rumors, I don’t know whether or not I’m going to go, the team, the minutes, everything. But right now my first job is to take care of this. Because this is much bigger than basketball. Or my future in NBA.

Looking back on how this situation has escalated, would you have done anything differently?

I will just say this: I have a platform and I’m using this platform. And I’m trying to be the voice of all those innocent people who don’t have a voice. So don’t call me crazy. I don’t regret anything. I wish I could have done more.

Any message for your family back in Turkey?

Oh man. If I could say one thing to them, I would tell them, ‘I love you.’ And I would say ‘Mom, I miss your food.’

The guilt-free guide to being a better person in 2019

We’re all trying our best to be ‘woke’, ethical and sustainable. But then again‚ sometimes it’s hard to know what the damn rules are. Here, Francesca Hornak breaks it down

Recycling

Essential, obviously. But if only waste disposal didn’t come with so many diktats. How clean must an empty pot of Yeo Valley be to guarantee recycling? What about an empty can of sustainably sourced tuna? Is a rinse fine, or does it need to go in the dishwasher, or is that a waste of energy? Which bin does cling film go in? What about cellophane? And Jiffy bags – part paper, part plastic? These are the kind of quandaries that have seen sane people get out of bed to give the hummus pot in the green box an extra wash, for luck.

Coffee Cups

Hooray for KeepCups! So simple, so stylish! Except that every morning one of two things will happen. You’ll either realise, as you rummage for the sodding cup at the front of a long, tetchy queue for coffee, that you have forgotten it and will have to sidle to your desk with a shameful disposable cup, conscious that yesterday you were talking loudly about ‘that documentary on plastics’. Or you’ll remember the KeepCup just as you’re about to leave home, and locate it sitting in your bag, coated in stale coffee from the day before. You’ll then make yourself late washing it, and detect a hint of Fairy Liquid in your flat white.

‘Why do I never have one of my 500 canvas totes when I’m actually in a shop?’

Facebook

Isn’t there something innately unclean about Facebook? Even before fake news and all its attendant moral dilemmas, the whole place always felt grubby, posting content for likes from people you neither like nor care about. But still we can’t help ourselves stalking the girl everyone fancied at school and then cursing Mark Zuckerberg for stealing another hour of our lives.

Bags for life

Is it wrong to miss, just slightly, the time when there was always a spare plastic bag kicking around at home? Something to line the bathroom bin with, or shove your muddy trainers in? It is wrong, and you know it. As a result, you now have a huge collection of bags for life under your sink, and an uneasy feeling that these might take even longer to biodegrade than the flimsy plastic bags of yesterday. See also: why do I never have one of my 500 canvas totes when I’m actually in a shop?

Periods

Once, you could unwrap a Tampax Compak without seeing a little grenade of toxic plastic, waiting to wash up on a beach. And in a few years’ time, we’ll probably all have mastered Mooncups and Dear Kate pants (does anyone else find this off-puttingly close to a nappy?). But until then, no woman should be begrudged the occasional Lil-Let.

Veganism

Touted as the no-brainer route to a more sustainable life (assuming you can find joy in life without cheese). That is, until you Google ‘air miles from almond milk’ or ‘is coconut oil worse for you than butter?’ and feel immediately exhausted. But let’s face it, who regularly has time to roast legs of lamb anyway? You’re probably unintentionally vegan half the time out of sheer culinary laziness. Job done.

US military deletes tacky New Year’s Eve tweet about being ‘ready to drop’ a bomb

US military bomb tweet

It’s so easy to party to excess at the end of the year — to get caught up in the year-end revelry and the excitement of turning a page on the calendar. Some people get so caught up in the fun they go out and get hammered. Others gather in Times Square to watch the ball drop while they try not to freeze to death. Meanwhile, the arm of the US military that oversees the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal decided to get in on the fun in its own way — by sending out a humorous tweet about how big its bombs are. A tweet that, okay, wasn’t actually funny at all. It has since been deleted and the military has also taken the extra step of apologizing for it.

Welcome to 2019.

Single During The Holidays? It Doesn’t Mean Being Lonely Or Alone

As the holiday season starts, singles may face questions from friends and family: “When are you getting serious about dating?”

In many families, seasonal festivities draw lines between who’s coupled and who’s not. Romantic partners are invited to holiday meals, included in family photographs, and seen as potential life mates – while “mere” friends are not. These practices draw a line between relationships seen as significant – and those which aren’t.

As I’ve argued in my research on the ethics and politics of the family, these practices reflect widespread assumptions. One is that everyone is seeking a romantic relationship. The second is more value-laden: living in a long-term romantic, sexual partnership is better than living without one. This fuels beliefs that those living solo are less happy, or lonelier, than couples.

These assumptions are so prevalent that they guide many social interactions. But research shows they’re false.

Why more Americans are living single

The truth is that more Americans are living unmarried and without a romantic partner. In 2005, the census for the first time recorded a majority of women living outside of marriage Although, of course, some unmarried women have romantic partners.

By 2010, married couples became a minority in the United States. The percentage of unmarried adults is at an all-time high, with more young adults choosing to live unmarried and without a romantic partner.

Personal finances likely plays a role in such choices. Millennials are worse off than earlier generations. There is a proven connection between economic resources and marriage rates – what legal scholar Linda McClain calls “the other marriage equality problem.” Lower incomes correlate with lower rates of marriage.

But changing family patterns are not simply the result of financial instability. They reflect choices: Not everyone wants romantic partnership and many singles see solo life as more conducive to flourishing and autonomy.

Single by choice

As I show in my book “Minimizing Marriage,” people have many different political or ethical reasons for preferring singlehood.

Some women become single mothers by choice. As sociologist Arlie Hochschild has argued, marriage brings extra work for women, making it less attractive than single life for some.

For other people, being single is simply a relationship preference or even an orientation. For example, there are those, referred to as “asexuals” and “aromantics,” who lack interest in sexual and romantic relationships.

Who are asexuals and aromantics?

Data from a 1994 British survey of more than 18,000 people showed 1 percent of the respondents to be asexual. Because asexuality is still little-known, some asexuals might not identify as such. And so, it’s possible that the true numbers could be higher.

Asexuals are people who do not feel sexual attraction. Asexuality is not simply the behavior of abstaining from sex, but an orientation. Just as straight people feel sexual attraction to members of a different sex, and gays and lesbians feel attraction to members of the same sex, asexuals simply do not feel sexual attraction. Asexuals can have romantic feelings, wanting a life partner to share intimate moments with and even cuddle – but without sexual feelings.

But some asexuals are also aromantic, that is, not interested in romantic relationships. Like asexuality, aromanticism is an orientation. Aromantics may have sexual feelings or be asexual, but they do not have romantic feelings. Both asexuals and aromantics face a lack of understanding.

Angela Chen, a journalist writing a book about asexuality, reports that her asexual interview subjects suffered from a lack of information about asexuality. As they failed to develop sexual attractions during puberty – while their classmates did – they asked themselves, “Am I normal? Is something wrong with me?”

But while asexuality is sometimes misunderstood as a medical disorder, there are many differences between an asexual orientation and a medical disorder causing a low sex drive. When asexuals are treated as “abnormal” by doctors or therapists, it does them a disservice.

Since the early 2000s, asexuals have exchanged ideas and organized through online groups. One such group, The Asexual Visibility and Education Network, for example, promotes the understanding that lack of sexual attraction is normal for asexuals, and lack of romantic feelings is normal for aromantics.

Asexuals, like aromantics, challenge the expectation that everyone wants a romantic, sexual partnership. They don’t. Nor do they believe that they would be better off with one.

Single and alone – or lonely?

Far from the stereotype of the lonely single, lifelong singles are less lonely than other older people, according to psychologist Bella DePaulo, the author of “Singled Out.” Nor are singles alone.

Many singles have close friendships which are just as valuable as romantic partnerships. But assumptions that friendships are less significant than romantic partnerships hide their value.

Understanding the reasons people have for remaining single might help to handle family stresses. If you’re single, you could take unwanted questioning as a teachable moment. If you’re the friend or family member of someone who tells you they’re happily single – believe them.

The Deadly Stress of Being a Black Woman in America

The evidence is irrefutable: Racism is getting away with murder as the leading cause of maternal and infant deaths and premature births among Black women.

Such is the conclusion of two major reports released this year in 2018. The first is a collaboration between the University of California San Francisco and California Department of Public Health: “California’s Maternal and Infant Health Assessment,” presented in July to First 5 California, a state-wide commission aimed at improving the lives of women and children. The second, “Fighting at Birth: Eradicating the Black-White Infant Mortality Gap,” is based on research by Duke University’s Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity and Insight Center for Community Development.

It was once thought that the most significant factors in deaths among pregnant women or the cause of premature births were so-called “risky behaviors.” The most obvious adverse behaviors included smoking, alcohol abuse and drug use. Long-term studies showed that a reduction in risky behavior and increasing women’s access to education and employment opportunities shifted maternal and infant outcomes. It was proven that if women received more education and enjoyed economic security through employment, they were less likely to engage in behaviors that placed them and their unborn child at risk.

That is no longer the case. Both of these reports blow that thesis out of the water.

What the studies revealed was that assumption of positive health outcomes for mothers and infants through a reduction in risky behaviors and improved socio-economic status was certainly true—but only for white women. The Duke study made crystal clear that Black women with higher education and more economic success were at an even greater risk of early death for them and their infants during pregnancy and were more likely to deliver prematurely.

Serena Williams and the premature delivery of her first child illustrates the major findings of both reports. At the time of her pregnancy, Williams was an athlete in great physical condition; she had no evidence of “risky behaviors” and had access to the best medical services. What then caused her to give birth premature? Was it just a fluke, or did her premature delivery prove the case that these studies are making? Was racism—and the accumulated stress of being publicly denigrated, a recipient of unequal treatment—responsible?

It is rare for a scientific study to make such a provocative declaration that racism is the primary cause of maternal and infant deaths and premature births for Black women, and even rarer for researchers grounded in data to declare unconditionally, and with emphasis, that “there is no safe age for Black women to have children.”

That is such an all-encompassing pronouncement it leaves little room for misunderstanding.

Racism. Without any hesitation, both of these studies point clear and definitive fingers, supported by data, at racism as the primary cause of Black women maternal and infant deaths. Regardless of age and socioeconomic circumstances, Black women have the highest maternal and infant deaths and premature birth rates among any other group in America. “For Black women,” they report, “exposure to discrimination and racialized stress throughout the lifespan can negatively impact birth outcomes.”

While such a conclusion seems counterintuitive, it points to the everyday reality of professional Black women. While working in high profile professions or in leadership positions may improve their socio-economic status, a side-effect is that, more often than not, they find themselves working in hostile work environments that contribute high levels of stress to their lives. Additional stress may emanate from the fact that professional women often live in predominantly white communities, where they may not experience community support and acceptance. At work and at home, Black women are in direct contact with high levels of micro-aggression, targeting, exclusionary behavior and overt racism.

We witnessed this with Serena Williams. Although she is the reigning tennis queen, Williams has had her fair share of stress brought on by racism. She has been booed by predominately white audiences when she won tennis competitions. Her most recent encounter with unequal treatment were the challenges of her tennis attire being judged inappropriate, and the penalty she received for challenging comments made by a judge. (The public, and other white tennis professionals, agreed that Serena was in the right—and pointed out that white players, men and women, have made similar challenges and comments and none were penalized nor reprimanded in any way.)

Just like in health, a double standard for Williams was at play. Did the stress Williams encounter over the course of her tennis career play a significant role in the premature birth of her daughter? Is she the poster woman for how racism is getting away with murder?

One Black OB-GYN physician thought so. In a piece for Vice, Sanithia L. Williams, MD, asserts that, based on the information already presented, it’s highly likely that racism played a part in Williams’ difficult birthing experience—and that the world is lucky she did not die. Too many other Black women have.

The adverse, and sometimes deadly, outcome of coping with racism as a Black woman in America is not accidental. The concept of “murder” requires a level of premeditation—in this instance, rooted in the ongoing discrimination and structural forces of racism that deliberately sets forth barriers to the progress of Blacks. Even successful individual Black women such as Williams are subjected to unequal and unjust treatment and public disparagement as they make their way in the world.

The lives of Black people in America have been shaped by living under a system of oppression that harkens back to slavery. While the institution of slavery may have been dismantled, it was replaced with structural oppression that manifests itself in the form of socioeconomic and political inequality that lead to systemic disparate treatment in health care, personal and public disparagement (“angry Black woman,” “hoes and bitches”), cumulative acts of microaggression and daily exposure to stressful and hostile work environments and living environments.

The results of these studies are not new—but in truth, conditions that seem to adversely impact Blacks as a group do not receive the same medical priority attention. The adverse impact of living while Black under racism has been taking its toll on the health of Black Americans for generations. We have the highest incidence of hypertension and diabetes than any other group in America, except possibly Native Americans (also a highly oppressed group). And while all people of African descent live with the stress of racism, Black women face intersecting systems of oppression that include gender alongside race.

“Racism and sexism are inextricably intertwined, combining into one hybrid force that is founded in the devaluing of (Black) women and racist perceptions of gender roles,” one group of scholars said in reporting research supported by the National Institute of Health. “Throughout history, essentializing and contradictory images of African American women have pervaded U.S. culture.”

There is virtually no safe place for Black women. It is our hope as a group that the genius and technology we have contributed to the shaping of American culture, despite the barriers constructed by racism, become permanently inscribed in America’s history. We are very much a part of the cultural and political DNA of this country, and have made significant contributions to America’s reputation as a world leader. We have kept this country on a path of moral righteousness that lives out the principles of its Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

We too sing: “America, we are its people.” We are contributors to this country’s genius. We are part of “we the people.” And we must stand strong against racism getting away with the murder of our Black mothers and infants.

Hugging her mum, Rita posed for pictures before greeting her jungle pal Sair Khan.

The star’s departure sparked further fix claims last night, as viewers claimed she knew she would be leaving after receiving her letter from home.

Tekashi 69’s Former Agency Accuses Him Of Lying About Being Robbed

Yesterday, Tekashi 69 stopped by The Breakfast Club and he claimed that the reason for which he fired his team was that they were robbing him. It was recently reported that Tekashi fired everyone and canceled his shows.

In a video in which he appears to be extremely stressed out, Tekashi speaks in front of the camera and revealed that his American tour had been canceled.

Tekashi was supposed to perform in Austin, Texas yesterday but he noted that he would not be present at the show.

At The Breakfast Club, he claimed that he only received about $ 300,000 of an alleged $ 3.5 million deal and everyone who watched the interview was definitely shocked to hear such a thing.

He also said that members of his booking company who were handling the deal, MTA, also reached the point in which they threatened the life of his mom.

According to TMZ, MTA is denying Tekashi’s claims.

An MTA rep said that there wasn’t such a deal in the first place and they also reported that MTA along with Tr3way Entertainment was handling his travel, security, and transport.

Hot New Hip Hop reported that MTA told TMZ that they booked nine upcoming shows in the US and two more in Mexico for him. They said that Tekashi received $ 700,000 for the shows.

There were also five more shows in Germany for which the rapper received $ 160,000. It seems that MTA is reportedly considering taking legal action against Tekashi for what he accused them of.

Jennifer Lawrence and Dior are being accused of ripping off Mexican culture

Jennifer Lawrence and Dior are being accused of ripping off Mexican culture

Jennifer Lawrence and Dior are being accused of ripping off Mexican culture

Jennifer Lawrence and Dior are in the news for all the wrong reasons. Scratch that, for one reason: cultural appropriation. The actress is the new face of the fashion house’s latest collection. So why is that problematic? Dior’s collection is entirely inspired by Mexican culture. To be more specific, the pieces in the line are heavily influenced by escaramuza charra.

To give you some backstory, escaramuza is a Mexican sport, almost like a rodeo, which features a group of women (usually 10 to 16) on horseback. They choreograph dance routines with their horses, which makes for a one-of-a-kind experience. Most consider escaramuza attire a form of art, similar to ballet folklorico, so it’s not surprising that Dior would be enamored by it.

The problem with Lawrence being the face of this specific collection is obvious: She’s not Mexican (or Latina for that matter). This collection directly takes silhouettes, patterns, and designs that are so ingrained in Mexican culture that Lawrence’s casting has struck a chord in the Mexican community. If anything, it’s sad that Dior didn’t cast a Mexican artist (whether an actress, singer, or model) as the face of their new collection.

It’s not like the fashion house hasn’t thought to highlight Mexican women before. Back in May, Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri (who is Italian) presented the collection in a respectful way: Remezcla reports that the fashion house flew in an eight-woman team from Mexico who each wore the latest pieces from the collection. As models walked down the runway, they rode in unison. It’s sad that the brand would make an effort to highlight these women during their show but forget about them during the ad campaigns.

In a behind-the-scenes video posted to Instagram, Dior shared Lawrence’s experience shooting the campaign. The actress said:

“One of the main inspirations of this collection is the traditional women riders of Mexico. I’m really excited that this collection is looking at and celebrating these women’s heritage through such a modern lens.”

Many people on social media quickly pointed out the cultural appropriation, and the thoughtlessness of Lawrence’s comments.

Even 2 Dope Queens actress Phoebe Robinson took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the brand’s blatant cultural appropriation:

“#Dior & #JenniferLawrence wanna celebrate traditional Mexican women riders thru a ‘modern lens’…by having a rich white woman named Jennifer be the face of this campaign? And like they couldn’t think of a better landscape to shoot than in California?! “Hmm, I dunno, maybe…like…shoot…in…Mexico…with…a…Mexican…actress like Salma Hayek, Karla Souza, Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez, Eva Longoria, or many others. But I guess they were all unavailable, so you had to go with Jennifer Lawrence.”

It’s true—there are many people Dior could have made the face of the collection. Aside from the actresses Robinson listed, there is also Kate del Castillo (who is pretty much Mexican royalty), Eiza González, and Netflix’s Made in Mexico star and model, Columba Díaz. That’s just scratching the surface. It’s disappointing that despite the inclusive options available, Dior chose someone who is “marketable” rather than to respect the culture they lifted ideas from.

Opinion: Stacey Abrams is being robbed in plain sight

Opinion: Stacey Abrams is being robbed in plain sight

Opinion: Stacey Abrams is being robbed in plain sight

Author Michael Arceneaux discusses voter suppression and racist tactics in Georgia that have resulted in Stacey Abrams’ powerful refusal to concede to Brain Kemp in the governor’s race.

During a November 9th press conference, Stacey Abrams’ campaign manager, Lauren Groh-Wargo, succinctly explained the chaos surrounding the Georgia gubernatorial election held on Tuesday, which still lacks a resolution. “These suppressive tactics [are] remnants of the old South,” she explained. Groh-Wargo is referring to Abrams’ opponent, Brian Kemp, who served as the state’s secretary of state up until this week. Thus, he was the referee in his own fight against Abrams for the governorship.

Groh-Wargo allowed numerous Abrams supporters to explain how the trickery employed against them deprived them of their constitutional right to vote. Their stories are frustrating, but Brian Kemp has long made his intentions clear. Kemp never threw a rock and hid his hand; he threw the rock at the heads of the Black folks registering to vote, and then used that hand to swat them—and their absentee and provisional ballots—away.

In 2014, Kemp had this to say about Democrats like Abrams who he claims take advantage of Georgia’s changing demographics by encouraging voter registration: “Democrats are working hard, and all these stories about them, you know, registering all these minority voters that are out there and others that are sitting on the sidelines, if they can do that, they can win these elections in November.”

And ever since then, he’s done everything in his power to excel disenfranchisement and keep Black people in their place. In order to maintain control of Georgia politics, he has purged more than 1.5 million registered voters from the system between 2016 and 2018. This year, he attempted to use “exact match” law to keep some 53,000 pending voters from registration. Along with purging, Kemp has shut down more than 200 polling places, unsurprisingly in predominantly poor and minority areas. It remains to be seen if Kemp will be successful with his plot to literally steal the election in plain sight, but if he does, I agree with The Atlantic’s Carol Anderson who says that Kemp’s victory should come with an asterisk.

Because of his Jim Crow Jr. shtick, it has been difficult for me to write about what is happening to Stacey Abrams without festering in rage and cynicism.

Stacey Abrams supporters in Georgia
Jessica McGowan/Getty Images

There are so many reasons to be angry about what is happening to Abrams, and by extension, to us—meaning the Black people whose voices are being stifled by an entitled coward and thief.

Kemp’s mediocrity is masked by a white supremacist patriarchal system that has allowed his pathetic ilk to simply snatch power as they see fit. That is to say, certain things are to be expected. Abrams has expected many things throughout this election, and has smartly complained accordingly.

I’m not surprised that CNN exit polling revealed an estimated 75 percent of white women—more than white men —supported Kemp over Abrams. Bernie Sanders is right that some white voters are uncomfortable voting for Black candidates like Stacey Abrams and Andrew Gillum, but he is wrong for stating that doesn’t make those voters racist on some level. Having said that, I frankly hope that white folks who aren’t racist talk to their racist relatives at Thanksgiving—‘cause clearly my Black ass can’t convince y’all.

Abrams, like any Democrat, can only get elected by winning a combination of the electorate: enough of the white voters and the majority of everyone else—especially Black voters. Abrams’ problem is centered on Kemp’s contempt for the Black voter and the actions of the entire Republican Party in the state of Georgia. Black people should not have to wait in line for five hours to vote because someone “accidentally” forgot to send power cords to polling stations in Black neighborhoods. Brian Kemp may have ironically had trouble voting for himself on Election Day, but he intentionally makes it hell for Black people to vote for his opponent.

You know, as fascinating as the Russian conspiracy related to the 2016 presidential election is, I wish the national media covered voter suppression with greater urgency. To not do so is to fall in line with GOP orthodoxy that claims Black people don’t deserve the same privileges as white voters. In spite of my fury and doubt, I applaud Abrams for her determination.

On Tuesday night, she declared, “In our Georgia, no one would be unseen; no one is unheard; and, no one is uninspired. Democracy only works when we work for it. When we fight for it. When we demand it.”

She has not once buckled under the power trips of her bigoted opponent. Instead, she continues standing tall and poised as she pushes Georgia to live up to its purported standards (before a national audience). “There are voices that are waiting to be heard,”Abrams said. And so they should be.

It is my hope that Abrams gets her runoff, but no matter the final outcome, one can’t shake the sight of the robbery happening in real time.

Bill Maher on Being Targeted by Pro-Trump Mail Bomber: ‘They’re So Stupid, They Don’t Know Science’

HBO

This past week, we learned that in addition to shipping pipe bombs to the Obamas, the Clintons, Joe Biden, Rep. Maxine Waters, CNN, George Soros, Robert De Niro and a host of others, pro-Trump mail-bombing suspect Cesar Sayoc was also looking to target comedian Bill Maher, whose management firm was evacuated after it received a suspicious package addressed to him (it was thankfully a false alarm).

And on Friday night’s Real Time, the political satirist addressed the controversy as only he could.

Everybody has to vote,” announced Maher to cheers from his in-studio audience, before joking, “We have an election. Democrats, if you’re voting by mail, make sure there’s enough stamps on your thing, and Republicans, the same goes for your bombs.”

Clueless is being rebooted, so here’s a few other sacred TV shows and films we need to protect

No one told us life was gonna be this way.

90s movie reboots
Moviestore Collection/REX/Shutterstock

There are two kinds of people. First, you have the kind of people who can’t wait for the newly announced Clueless reboot. And secondly, you have people like me: who honestly can’t think of anything worse. Not because I don’t like the film – in fact, I’m obsessed with it – but because it was just so perfect and of its time. Deadline broke the news earlier today that a Clueless remake is currently in ‘early development’ over at Paramount and it’s being helmed by two women whose projects you’ve probably seen recently. Tracy Oliver, who wrote Girls Trip, will be producing the project while Marquita Robinson, who’s behind Netflix’s Glow, will be in charge of the script.

Although the outlet revealed they were currently unsure ‘whether it’s a fresh new take for the millennium and if older characters will be reprising their roles’, I don’t think either option is a great shout. (I’ve learned that the long, hard way after Sex and the City 2 and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.) Like it or not, it seems like it’s full steam ahead. Cher and Josh, I adore you but I don’t know if I can come with you on this journey.

After seeing the announcement come out, it got me thinking about which other classic movies and television shows that Hollywood should just leave the hell alone. By virtue of putting them on this list though, I’m also 150% certain that there are definitely talks behind the scenes about reboots and remakes happening RN. If there’s anything 2018 has taught me, it’s that nothing is sacred anymore. Here’s a few 90s classics and early 00s beauties that should never be rebooted…

Friends

friends sibling theory

Like Clueless, Friends was this bolt of lightning that just captured a specific cultural moment. Although people have started picking apart the show and exposing its un-PC 90s underbelly, the tale of six pals in New York remains one of the most beloved television shows and continues to spur debates on whether or not Ross and Rachel were really on a break. Nobody will ever be able to fill the shoes that Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Scwhimmer and Matt LeBlanc have left behind and capture their chemistry IMO, so there’s no point in even trying to remake the entire series. The jury’s still out on whether or not a Friends movie is going to happen with them reprising their roles but I honestly don’t think that’s going to happen.

If you’re really keen on seeing what life was like for Monica and Chandler after Friends, an interior design company redesigned Monica’s iconic Friends apartment for the 21st century. It’s actually pretty cool and I’d move in if I could afford it.

Back to the Future

90s movie reboots

Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock

I swear, every film student I talked to when I was at uni waxed lyrical about this film. The adventures of Marty McFly and Doc hold a very special place in my heart and seeing anybody try to recreate that magic would hurt. Even though the Back to the Future series succeeded with one of their stellar sequels, it wasn’t magic every time. Please, I can’t do cowboys again.

Matilda

Roald Dahl’s novel was one of the first books I ever really resonated with as a kid and unsurprisingly, the film was no different. This 1996 film captured the zany brilliance of the original story with a spectacular over-the-top approach to the story, bringing to life memorable scenes like the Chokey and Miss Trunchbull literally tossing a girl miles away by her braids. I can’t imagine a better Matilda than Mara Wilson TBH and if you haven’t checked in on her in years, go follow her on Twitter – she’s amazing.

The original Harry Potter series

harry potter costumes

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that whether I like it or not, this is probably going to happen in five years. Nobody, not even J.K. Rowling, can let this beloved franchise go and I think it’s time we all pull a Daniel Radcliffe: hold it in our hearts forever, make our peace with it and move onto other things. The sound of John Williams’ orchestral opening still sends shivers down my spine and we all remember that moment that the doors were thrown open and we saw the Great Hall for the first time; I don’t think anything’s ever going to top that. Plus, let’s be real – who else would really be able to play the original trio but Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint? (Side note: if a remake has to happen, I want it to be in decades and for Daniel Radcliffe to play Professor Dumbledore.)

Bernard’s Watch

My friend Conor once said to me on a night out, ‘If I had Bernard’s watch, I would f*** shit up.’ Bernard’s Watch was such a sweet, wholesome television show and after hearing my pal say that, I don’t trust the powers at be not to abuse the power a magical watch will give a gen Y kid. It probably won’t even be a watch, it’ll probably be an app on an unbranded smartphone and even just typing that out makes me furious that I’ve already thought about this.

Ab Fab

This laugh out loud British comedy remains one of the funniest shows ever and even now, the tales of the chain-smoking, vodka-drinking and totally over it all duo remain some of my favourites. If there was to be a reboot or remake, the only way I’d come around to it would be if Jennifer Saunders was attached to write or direct since she was the one that brought the magic the first time round as one of the show’s main writers and playing Edina Monsoon. We’ve already gotten a sequel movie which wasn’t great, let’s not push our luck here.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

GIPHY

Even though The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was intended originally for American audiences, after it started airing on BBC 2 it became a British cult classic. People love this show (and the opening song which everybody seems to know backwards), so seeing it rebooted for a 21st century audience would be kind of devastating. Plus, the cast of Fresh Prince have since shut down any possibility of a revival since James Avery – who played Uncle Phil – sadly passed away.

Alfonso Ribeira, who played Carlton, told PEOPLE, ‘I think it’s impossible with James Avery being gone. Do we really want to see Will and Carlton in their, you know, 40s and 50s?’

He added, ‘James Avery, right, he’s actually the most important character on the show. … Without him, everything that Will and Carlton did would mean nothing.’

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

GIPHY

I’m still in denial that this reboot is happening. Buffy was one of the first real feminist television icons I ever came across and she’s stayed with me ever since: I’m literally going to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer-themed Halloween party this weekend. The butt-kicking adventures of the vampire slayer were my highlight growing up and seeing how much the Scooby gang cared for one another set the bar high for my own friendships, supernatural disasters and end-of-the-world crises aside. It was bold for its time and I literally can’t stop thinking about some of the show’s episodes, including the quiet, unexpected death of Buffy’s mother and Hush – the experimental completely silent episode.

According to the new showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen, the upcoming Buffy show won’t be a reboot and instead will centre on ‘a new Slayer’. I mean, I’m still not convinced but I’ll reserve judgement till we actually get to see it.

Any Amanda Bynes romcom

90s movie reboots

Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock

What a Girl WantsShe’s the Man? Honestly, we were #blessed to grow up with a bounty of Amanda Bynes’ films and TV shows. People aren’t going to be poring over any of these flicks at film school or championing them as a bastion of romance genre excellence, but I still don’t want anybody to touch them. Although Amanda Bynes has faded from the spotlight and gone pretty quiet recently, she was the funny, sassy girl that I desperately wanted to be. Nobody will ever hold a candle to her.

Live-action Studio Ghibli films

90s movie reboots

Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock

Disney’s currently on the live-action remake hype train and if Studio Ghibli hops on it, I’m going to lose my shit. These Japanese animated films are untouchable with the likes of Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Services beloved globally. They were brought over to English audiences pretty respectfully (a rare feat) and even attracted voice acting talent like Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Emily Blunt.

That said, my skin actually crawls at the thought of Hollywood making a live-action Spirited Away – mostly because I’m terrified they would white-wash it and cast Scarlett Johansson as Chihiro. Never forgive, never forget Ghost in the Shell.

I’m sure there’s a ton of films and shows I’ve missed, but I’d be here all day if I listed them all. Off the top of my head, I wouldn’t be able to bear reboots of Fight Club, Die Hard, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Saved by the Bell.

Are there any films or shows you actually want to see rebooted?

Sharifa Murdock On Being A Black Woman Fashion Designer and Mentoring

Having worked in retail since age 16, Sharifa Murdock understands the business of fashion and rightfully so: She’s enjoyed a successful career in men’s fashion and is one of the powerhouses behind several fashion market shows. This black woman fashion designer dynamo connects with buyers, editors, stylists, fashion enthusiasts, bloggers, and influencers, proving she is leading the pack for women to thrive in the fashion world, which remains predominately led by male designers.

Murdock also has a mentoring program, The Brooklyn Intern as well as the newly minted ENVSN Festival.

For a deeper understanding of her journey, Black Enterprise interviewed the designer about emerging and established brands, her daily work life, and why ‘paying it forward’ is always in vogue.

Black Enterprise: How does it feel being an African American woman in a mostly white, male-dominated retail field?

Sharifa Murdock: Honestly, it wasn’t until I got older that I noticed a difference, and the short answer—I’m proud. I have been so fortunate throughout the years to work alongside someone, even at a young age, who never saw color or differences in races and this is the person who helped me become the businesswoman I am today. For the majority of my career, my work environment has been filled with people from all different backgrounds and filled with understanding and acceptance of different cultures. To that point, as I grew older in the fashion industry I realized how segregated the rest of the industry is and how hard it has been for the majority of African American women in this space. We’re surrounded by an industry that, on the surface, wants to promote “multi-centralism” but sometimes comes off in-genuine and insensitive. It’s those things that wake you up and make me appreciate the journey I’ve had and really empowers me to uplift other African American women in the industry.

Explain your introduction to the retail field.

I was young and hungry and just wanted to be part of the cool-kids-club. When I was 16 years old, there was a store called Atrium, down on Bleecker Street. It was the hottest store where every athlete, rapper, rock star was shopping and I just HAD to be part of it. I started off as a sales associate on the floor and worked my way up over the years to senior management. From there I ventured off working in-store and corporate for Louis Vuitton; change of pace to say the least. But it gave me the experience to work in a different setting and understand two different sides of the retail game. Ultimately, I ended up back at Atrium, which led me to launch tradeshows.

black woman fashion designer

You juggle a lot of ventures including Liberty Fairs [an annual fashion tradeshow in New York]. You make it look effortless but I am sure it is demanding. How do you handle the stress of such a full workload?

It sounds cliché but if you do what you love, it’s not work. It’s honestly how I feel. Every day I get to have meetings with people I have the pleasure of calling my friends and meet new designers to discuss how we can help each other grow within the industry. There’s no normal schedule—it’s running around and making things up on the fly, always! With the ever-changing landscape of the retail industry you never know what you’re going to need to do next; one day I’m selling tradeshow booths, the next I’m planning a networking dinner to host at home with my chef husband: ‘Dinner with the Murdocks’ has become a specialty of ours.

This year we have seen a great number of African American female power movers and shakers: Essence Magazine’s return to 100% black ownership, Harlem Fashion Row’s shoe collaboration with LeBron James and Nike, and your involvement with the Cabana show [ a trade event focusing on swim, resort, and year-round travel lifestyle]. How have those moves changed the direction of the black buying market?

I don’t know if it’s changing the way we buy but it is for sure finally bringing recognition from places outside our own community that African American women are just as powerful as any other person in the workforce, if not more. The past year has given our community a stronger voice throughout all industries to say ‘we’re more than just entertainers or athletes’ and we don’t have to fit in this box that society has granted the norm for African Americans. We, as females, are strong and dedicated, but we, as black women, are unbreakable and determined to make our mark.

black woman fashion designer

What are five things do you do to start your business day?

I have an actual routine: Get up early and workout; eat a healthy but tasty breakfast; pick an amazing outfit I know I’ll want to be photographed in (but with comfortable shoes, always); drive into work while FaceTiming my friends (I know that’s bad); get my daily dose of Oprah’s wisdom through her podcast

Why is the mentee/mentor relationship, especially with young women of color, so important to you?

It’s so important to me now because I never had it. I know I talk about how fortunate I’ve been in my work life throughout the years, but I actually never had someone that looks like me to guide me through the experiences I’ve had. There are times that something may happen, even something small, that makes you doubt your worth and it’s so important to have someone that you can have honest conversations with and ask, ‘Is this normal?’ or ‘Why are things this way?’ Having someone who can share their experiences with you for the good and the bad and have a little bit more of an understanding of what a controversial and crazy world we live in. Not to mention, this age of social media and what people choose to share about their lives online creates such a false expectation of success. Media, overall, also makes it seem “cool” to be in competition with the girl who is like you and encourages only one to be on top. I want to change that rhetoric; I want to help girls take the higher road and be true to themselves and help one another to be better as a whole. If we want to grow as a community, we need to break the stigma black women can’t work together. It’s so important to stop playing into this and start uplifting one another to make each of us, and us as a whole, great.

If you could give advice to burgeoning brands and even millennials about business what would it be?

Be true to you. Everyone is going to have an opinion on what’s best for you and what you need to do. Take criticism in a constructive way but trust your gut and know that you don’t have to fit into everyone else’s version of cool.

You have a heavy following on social media, specifically Instagram. How is social media important in today’s fashion and retail worlds?

It’s more important than we’d like to admit. It’s the driving channel of everything—it’s giving us access to information that, in decades past, have been impossible to come by unless you were in that very moment. It gives us access to other people’s lives, breaking news, global fashion, expectations, etc. For good or bad, it’s there and I hope that I can use mine in a positive way to showcase my story and my most genuine self.

QAnoners Say Their QAnon Merch Is Being Banned By Secret Service at Trump Rallies

Leah Millis/Reuters

QAnon conspiracy theorists have begun sneaking their QAnon shirts into Trump rallies amid reports that people wearing the shirts have been turned away by people they claim are Secret Service officers staffing Trump events.

QAnon is founded on a series of anonymous clues posted online by a person named “Q” that purport to show a secret world where Trump is engaged in endless battle with a pedophile cabal of high-ranking Democrats and Trump’s foes will soon be banished to Gitmo. It is an inherently ludicrous idea but one that’s managed to gain a ton of traction through Trump rallies, where attendees regularly show up with Q shirts and signs.

Indeed, the conspiracy theory jumped into the mainstream in July, when a number of people with QAnon shirts and signs were shown on TV at a Trump rally in Florida. Other QAnon supporters who get caught on camera at Trump rallies have earned cryptic shout-outs from Q, and believers in the theory scrutinize Trump’s hand gestures at rallies to claim he’s pointing to QAnon believers.
