How Comic Book Costumes Make the Transition from Page to Screen

Have you ever wondered what goes into creating a superhero costume on screen? It’s a lot more involved than you might think. It’s not just a case of copying the comic book illustrations. In fact, the two are often poles apart. And while a costume designer working on a superhero movie will look at the evolution of the costume on the page, it’s a very small part of bringing the costume to the screen.

For the comic book artists, it’s unlikely they’re thinking much further ahead than the blank page they have to fill. Artist Alan Davis has been prominent in the field for more than 30 years. He’s worked for both DC and Marvel, and for him, it’s about keeping things simple.

Making Life Easy for 22 Pages

Batman's ears look just about the right size, but as for Catwoman's nose…

“Where we differ from film is that with a real-life costume, you can make it as detailed as you want and film it from every angle. I’ve got to draw it and I don’t want to draw every detail so simplicity is usually one of the things I consider,” says Davis.

The artist, who has worked on 2000AD; X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four titles for Marvel; and DC’s flagship Detective Comics among others, adds “I don’t think [a director or costume designer is] going to care what I’ve done. They’re going to want to do something that’s going to make a good toy. I’m worried about my considerations, which are that I’ve got to draw it for 22 pages so it needs to be something I can draw quickly and economically. They’re looking at something that’s going to be flashy so it’s completely different.”

But does Davis find he has to stick to a set of limitations? Either because of the iconic nature of a character on the comic book page or because a certain style of artwork is considered ‘sacred’?

“Oh without a doubt,” he says with no hesitation. “Yeah, the first criticism I got was: ‘Make Batman’s ears smaller’. That I’d made them too big. It was: ‘Make Batman’s ears smaller and make women’s noses smaller’. Those were the two criticisms I got on my first job. I was drawing women with real-sized noses. It didn’t go down well at all.”

Wonder Woman Challenges

DC-WonderWoman
Lynda Carter's iconic Wonder Woman costume with Michael Wilkinson's modern version from Batman v Superman in the background at London's DC Exhibition: Dawn of Super Heroes.

For costume designer Lindy Hemming, who worked on the Dark Knight trilogy with Christopher Nolan and Wonder Woman with Patty Jenkins, the route to finished design and beyond is far more involved and labour intensive. And that’s despite the fact that on Wonder Woman, she had a previous screen design to work from.

Lindy explains, “The great thing about designing the Wonder Woman costumes was, and you can’t imagine how liberating it is, that they had already had Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman. So I had a kind of backstory to fall back on. I wasn’t falling back on Lynda Carter twirling, I was falling back on [costume designer] Michael Wilkinson and Batman v Superman. So my challenges to bring it from the script to the screen were to try to create a world for the Amazon women which somehow keyed into the end result. Which is that Wonder Woman takes this costume and leaves the island of Themyscira and goes off into the world.”

Integrating Wonder Woman Into the Real World

Wonder Woman
One of Wonder Woman's most memorable scenes.

Hemming continues: “So all of the costumes for the island of Themyscira needed to somehow, design-wise, make sense with this costume. Instead of it being a standalone thing that comes from nowhere and is only originating from [Lynda Carter’s 1970s] cloth costume, it came from some logical armour.

“My other challenges in this film were to bring the worlds which she then goes to save, or help with — which was the First World War — to make it feel as absolutely real and horrible and muddy and dirty … so that when you see her in her superhero costume you accept it as more real and more believable because the world she’s entering is a real and believable world. That’s the sort of juxtaposition which you can say you want to do, and you can only know if it works when you watch it happening in the film.”

It’s probably safe to say it works – and the swathes of people who went to see the film will most likely agree.

Ancient History + Comic Book Art = Screen Design

Wonder Woman concept
Wonder Woman concept art.

Although Lindy admits to taking inspiration from the pages of the comic books, she points out that what Alan Davis and other artists like him do is a “different discipline.” When she’s designing for a film, Lindy’s process is all-encompassing.

“You must look at everything,” says the Oscar winner, who’s worked on everything from Harry Potter to James Bond. “I looked at ancient Greece, I looked at ancient Thrace, all these places and then I also looked at the way… the people drawing the comic book art had obviously looked at the same things, and [I looked at] how they’d interpreted them. So, you’re every day allowing yourself a bit of leeway when you design things because you look to see what the [comic book artists] did and how [what you do] will be acceptable to the fans. You think: ‘Would they believe this, would I believe it if I saw it? So you do look back at the comics.

“Every day we work with concept artists and illustrators. So every day we’re handing over our stuff to them. But that’s a different process really. I don’t actually think [comic book artists would] be that interested to talk [to us]. It’s a different discipline, what they do.”

How An Unlikely Rockstar Influenced Heath Ledger’s Joker

the dark knight batman joker heath ledger
Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight.

One of Lindy’s favourite costumes she’s worked on is Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight. For Lindy, the challenge was conveying why he would have green hair, why his face looks the way it does and why he would wear the clothes he does. She took inspiration from real life ‘dandies’, as she calls them. She cites Keith Richards, Sid Vicious and Malcolm McLaren, as well as one other surprising one-time darling on the UK indie scene, ex of Kate Moss and former Libertines singer Pete Doherty.

They all use or used the look of madness as a method of getting their own way – that’s the conclusion she came to, and that provided the justification she needed. She borrowed ideas from fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen and eventually landed on Ledger’s iconic look. With some input from Christopher Nolan, who was the brains behind the green waistcoat.

Batman’s costume was another, more complicated, matter. With Nolan intent on conveying gravity, and bringing a patina of reality to the character and his story, Hemming had her work cut out.

For Lindy, it was a case of trying to understand who the person that chooses to dress as ‘the Batman’ really was. And that was her springboard. This meant that the costume had to be logical, practical and modern. She took inspiration from the multilayered materials used in the manufacture of Nike trainers, specifically, shoes built for protection, flexibility and lightness. She investigated plastics, meshes and metal meshes as ways to create depth, and she also looked at military gear.

Batman’s cloak, in particular, was a challenge. She rejected Nolan’s suggestion of velvet as a fabric because, although it gave a look similar to the one she was after, it didn’t move in the way she felt the cape should. So she ended up consulting costume designed Graham Churchyard – known for his work on various Marvel and DC films – who suggested flocking kite fabric. Which turned out to be just the ticket.

Building a Leather Library

Wonder-Woman
Wonder Woman and the Amazons in their Themysciran warrior attire.

And if you’re in any doubt, picking fabrics isn’t simple.

“I have a team of people who go out and I ask them to look — for instance, [for Wonder Woman], I asked them to bring me as many leather samples as I could specify: animal print skins, different textures of leather, different weights of leather,” says Hemming. “I began to make a sort of leather library so that I could use it for the Amazon armour. But also for the Veld, the Belgian village, we were looking for fabrics all over the place that were cottons, that were of the period, so that they looked like they belonged there.”

So how does she come to a final decision?

“So, you sort of make a room of fabrics and you’d have your character pinned on the wall, what you think you’re doing,” Hemming explains. “And then your fabrics, as you choose them, you pin them beside it and so slowly you build up a picture. Maybe the person only has one costume, then you have few fabrics. Or maybe they have ten costumes, so you sort of build your line of what the costume will entail and what you will buy and use for it. Sometimes you’re limited because the costume has to be a multiple costume for a stunt. You’re not able to use the thing you’d like and so what you do then, if you’re lucky enough, you find the perfect example and then you get the fabric printed.”

Next time you watch a superhero movie, think twice before criticising the costumes — if that’s your tendency — now you know the lengths they go to to get them just right. It’s one thing to draw them on the pages of a comic book. Bringing them to life on screen is a completely different thing altogether, involving endless research, countless 2-D and 3-D designs, the meticulous investigation of different materials and fabrics — as well as plenty of other practical considerations too granular to detail here.

Armistead Maupin’s ‘Tales of The City’: The Best Soap Opera In Book Form

For anyone who reads Armistead Maupin’s Tales of The City, it doesn’t matter that 28 Barbary Lane in San Francisco is a fictional address. When you’re in the city, at least for the first time, you want to find it. You want to be there, and screw-fiction, find its occupants—landlady Anna Madrigal, and that first book’s golden group of tenants: Mona, Michael (Mouse), Brian, and Mary Ann.

DeDe, D’or, Edgar, Beauchamp, Jon, Frannie, Mother Mucca, Thack, Shawna, Ben: sure it would be lovely to see them too. But really you want to see Mrs. Madrigal, sweeping the steps, fixing a stray wisp of her hair, and welcoming you, in her grandly mysterious way, to all the intrigues within.

Yes, Macondray Lane on Russian Hill exists, the nearest-as-heck approximation of where 28 Barbary Lane is. When I visited it it felt thrilling to be in its shadowy, leafy embrace. But 28 Barbary Lane felt even more natural, even more alive and pungent, in my imagination. That is Maupin’s great skill in the Tales series.

Bob Woodward Book Claims Trump’s Top Aides Trashed Him and Stole Papers to ‘Protect the Country’

Bob Woodward, the investigative journalist who gained fame for breaking Richard Nixon’s Watergate scandal, paints an alarming picture of another White House in chaos in his explosive new book about the Trump administration.

In Fear: Trump in the White House, Woodward writes that top aides are so concerned that President Donald Trump‘s erratic behavior could endanger national security that they’ve stolen papers off of his desk in an effort to “protect the country.” The author also alleges that White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly called Trump an “idiot” who has “gone off the rails.”

Trump’s camp isn’t having it. On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders released a statement in response to the claims made in Woodward’s book, due out Sept. 11.

“This book is nothing more than fabricated stories, many by former disgruntled employees, told to make the president look bad,” reads the statement. “While it is not always pretty, and rare that the press actually covers it, President Trump has broken through the bureaucratic process to deliver unprecedented successes for the American people.”

The statement continues, “Sometimes it is unconventional, but he always gets results. Democrats and their allies in the media understand the president’s policies are working and with success like this, no one can beat him in 2020 — not even close.”

Sanders also attached a list of 53 “Trump Administration Accomplishments,” taking credit for creating 4 million jobs since the election and a record-low unemployment rate for Hispanic-Americans. The last bullet point read: “We have begun BUILDING THE WALL. Republicans want STRONG BORDERS and NO CRIME.  Democrats want OPEN BORDERS which equals MASSIVE CRIME.”

In the days leading up to Fear‘s Sept. 11 publication, multiple outlets have released details about the book — including insights into why staffers would steal papers from the Oval Office. According to CNN.com, former chief economic adviser Gary Cohn saw a letter that was drafted to end an important trade deal between the U.S. and South Korea — one that, if signed, he believed would threaten national security. So he allegedly took it off President Trump’s desk.

“I stole it off his desk,” Cohn told an associate, according to Woodward. “I wouldn’t let him see it. He’s never going to see that document. Got to protect the country.”

Woodward claims Cohn wasn’t the only one stealing papers from the Oval Office, alleging that former staff secretary Rob Porter did the same thing, according to CNN.com. Woodward reports that staffers also found ways to stall Trump from making orders they believed would endanger the country.

“A third of my job was trying to react to some of the really dangerous ideas that had and try to give him reasons to believe that maybe they weren’t such good ideas,” Porter said, according to Woodward. (Porter resigned from his post in February after domestic abuse allegations came out against him, according to The New York Times. Porter denied the allegations at the time.)

Woodward also reports that former chief of staff Reince Priebus was aware of these actions by Porter and other staffers. The author described these alleged attempts to control the president as “no less than an administrative coup d’état,” according to CNN.com.

Fear alleges that even Trump’s chief of staff was fed up with the president’s behavior.

Woodward claims that Kelly was in a meeting with a few other staffers when he said of Trump: “He’s an idiot. It’s pointless to try to convince him of anything. He’s gone off the rails. We’re in Crazytown. I don’t even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I’ve ever had.”

Trump Calls Omarosa Manigault Newman a ‘Dog’ After She Claims He’s Racist and in ‘Mental Decline’

On Tuesday, at the same presser in which Sanders released a statement, Kelly also pushed back.

“The idea I ever called the president an idiot is not true. As I stated back in May and still firmly stand behind: ‘I spend more time with the president than anyone else, and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship,’ ” he said.

He continued, ” ‘ always knows where I stand, and he and I both know this story is total BS. I’m committed to the president, his agenda, and our country.  This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration’s many successes.’ “

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has also criticized the president’s intelligence, Woodward claims, according to The Washington Post.

The book describes how, during a National Security Council meeting in January, Trump questioned the U.S. military presence on the Korean Peninsula, including an operation that helps the U.S. spot a North Korean missile more quickly.

“We’re doing this in order to prevent World War III,” Mattis allegedly told the president.

Once Trump left the meeting, Woodward writes, per The Post, “Mattis was particularly exasperated and alarmed, telling close associates that the president acted like — and had the understanding of — ‘a fifth- or sixth-grader.’ ”

Woodward, now the associate editor at The Washington Post, has reported on eight presidencies and is the co-recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes, according to the book’s press release.

“Drawing from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, contemporaneous meeting notes, files, documents and personal diaries, FEAR brings to light the explosive debates that drive decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One and the White House residence,” reads the release.

While the White House’s response to the book has been harsh, others have been receptive of Woodward’s book.

Lawrence Ari Fleischer, the former White House Press Secretary for President George W. Bush, praised Woodward’s credibility on Twitter.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

“I’ve been on the receiving end of a Bob Woodward book. There were quotes in it I didn’t like,” Fleischer tweeted on Tuesday. “But never once — never — did I think Woodward made it up. Anonymous sources have looser lips and may take liberties. But Woodward always plays it straight. Someone told it to him.”

How J.R.R. Tolkien’s New Book Sets Up an Iconic Lord of the Rings Scene

Warning: This post contains spoilers for J.R.R. Tolkien’s new book, The Fall of Gondolin.

Although J.R.R. Tolkien never published The Fall of Gondolin, he memorably referred to it “the first real story” of Middle-Earth in a 1955 letter to poet W.H. Auden. This, of course, means that it was from Gondolin that The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings and all other tales of Tolkien’s beloved imaginary world sprang.

Edited by Tolkien’s son, Christopher Tolkien, Gondolin tells the story of the man Tuor’s journey to the hidden elvish city of Gondolin to defend the secret stronghold from the dark lord Morgoth—the predecessor and mentor of Sauron. Following 2007’s The Children of Húrin and 2017’s Beren and Lúthien, it is the last of Tolkien’s three “Great Tales” of the Elder Days of Middle-Earth.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

The text is rife with references to characters and creatures that come to play a role in The Lord of the Rings. But there is one passage in particular that seems to set up one of the most famous scenes from the LOTR trilogy.

After Gondolin is sacked by Morgoth’s forces, Tuor and the surviving Elves flee through the mountains. It’s there that a pursuing Balrog attacks the group and the Elf Glorfindel springs into action to defend his people.

The full passage reads as follows:

The ardour of Glorfindel drove that Balrog from point to point, and his mail fended him from its whip and claw. Now had he beaten a heavy swinge upon its iron helm, now hewn off the creature’s whip-arm at the elbow. Then sprang the Balrog in the torment of his pain and fear full at Glorfindel, who stabbed like a dart of a snake; but he found only a shoulder, and was grappled, and they swayed to a fall upon the crag-top. Then Glorfindel’s left hand sought a dirk, and this he thrust up that it pierced the Balrog’s belly nigh his own face (for that demon was double his stature); and it shrieked, and fell backward from the rock, and falling clutched Glorfindel’s yellow locks beneath his cap, and those twain fell into the abyss.

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, you probably noticed that this sequence is reminiscent of the notorious scene in The Fellowship of the Ring when Gandalf battles a Balrog in the Mines of Moria—”You shall not pass!”—only to fall (seemingly to his death) when the beast drags him down from the Bridge of Khazad-dûm.

See if you can spot all the other Lord of the Rings references when The Fall of Gondolin hits shelves on Aug. 30.

Omarosa Tells NPR She Heard Trump ‘N-Word Tape,’ Contradicting Her Own Tell-All Book

Omarosa’s book isn’t even on shelves yet and she’s already out here contradicting herself.

In an interview with NPR, Omarosa claimed she heard — with her own ears — Donald Trump use the N-word on the set of ‘The Apprentice.’

In her book, Unhinged, she says the opposite.

via NPR:

“Hearing it changed everything for me,” former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman told NPR on Friday.

Manigault Newman was referring to what she calls the “N-word tape” — a long-rumored but never surfaced tape of Donald Trump on the set of The Apprentice allegedly using the racial slur.

In her interview with NPR’s Rachel Martin, Manigault Newman claims to have heard the tape and heard Trump using that slur on the tape.

But that’s not what it says in her tell-all book, Unhinged, due out on Tuesday.

When asked by Martin about the discrepancy during the interview, Manigault Newman insisted Martin must not have read the book (she had) and pointed to a section at the very end of it.

But in that section, Manigault Newman doesn’t actually describe hearing the tape. She writes of calling one of her “sources” who had a lead on the “N-word tape.”

“Incredibly, this person – who shall remain nameless – picked up the phone.

We spoke.

On this phone conversation, I was told exactly what Donald Trump said – yes, the N-word and others in a classic Trump-goes-nuclear rant – and when he’d said them.

During production he was miked, and there is definitely an audio track.

For over a year I’d been so afraid of hearing the specifics from someone who’d been in the room. Hearing the truth freed me from that fear. And only now that it’s gone, do I realize just how heavy it’s been.”

During the interview with Martin, Manigault Newman read the section aloud, then insisted it described her hearing the tape rather than what the words on the page state, which is that she heard an account of what was on the tape. “I heard the tape,” she said when pressed.

Her search for the N-word tape is a core piece of the narrative Manigault Newman weaves in Unhinged, a memoir that covers her time on the reality TV program The Apprentice that starred the future president, then the 2016 Trump campaign and the White House. This discrepancy in her account of hearing the tape may cast doubt on other claims in the book, many of which are explosive.

In Unhinged, Manigault Newman writes as both a Trump world insider, overjoyed at his election, and as a voice of the liberal resistance airing concerns about his rhetoric, policies and mental state.

At this point someone needs to get their hands on those tapes and release them. We doubt it’ll change anything, but at least we’ll know the truth.

Where is the Love Island 2018 villa?

The Love Island villa is located on the Spanish Balearic Island of Majorca (Mallorca), in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar on the East of the Island.

The villa is the same luxury location that last year’s contestants stayed in, but it’s been given an overhaul.

The famous hideaway has been given a makeover, meaning the stars will be tempted to spend more time in there away from the prying eyes of their co-stars.

The bedroom is decorated with bright blue and pink blankets and cushions, with giant, holiday-themed images on the walls.

Outside seating and day beds have been set up around the pool area, with sun loungers and an al-fresco bar set up for late-night drinks.

The villa also boasts an enormous pool, gym area and jacuzzi.

The round seating area complete with a fancy fire pit is still in place, along with the enormous open-plan kitchen and living room.

Staff have been busy for weeks setting up the hidden cameras and linking up the microphones to make sure every cough and spit is captured on screen.

Jessica Knoll talks the explosion of #MeToo, the dangers of performed girl power, and her page-turning new book The Favorite Sister

Jessica Knoll talks the explosion of #MeToo, the dangers of performed girl power, and her page-turning new book The Favorite Sister

Jessica Knoll talks the explosion of #MeToo, the dangers of performed girl power, and her page-turning new book <em>The Favorite Sister</em>

It would be tempting to call The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll a beach read. After all, it’s about a group of five women — Brett, Stephanie, Kelly, Lauren, and Jen — who are the stars of Goal Diggers, a reality TV show about young female entrepreneurs. It certainly has all the makings of a great beach read; the book opens with a murder and alternates between the past and the present, switching narrators as you slowly gather information and put the pieces together of what really happened. There are juicy secrets, dramatic catfights, and unexpected twists galore.

But while The Favorite Sister IS an A+ book to read on the beach, it provides so much more than just a few hours of entertainment. It’s a necessary commentary on the ways women can be emotionally abusive to each other. It will make you think twice about those people who rush to claim they support women in public, but act so differently in private. And that’s not to mention how it’ll make you rethink everything you thought you knew about reality TV.

In under 400 pages, Knoll tackles everything from money and ambition to race and sexuality. It’s a tall order, but she’s written an addicting novel about what happens when we want to celebrate women for being go-getters, yet punish them when they actually try to go and get.

I spoke with Knoll about The Favorite Sister and what it was like telling this story during the height of the #MeToo era. Don’t worry, there aren’t any spoilers ahead!

HelloGiggles: I’m sure you get this question a lot, but I have to ask: What’s your relationship with reality TV? Love it? Hate it? Fascinated by it? Somewhere in between?

Jessia Knoll: It’s a strong relationship. I’m not one of those people who thinks that reality TV is the death of intellectual culture, high art, or anything like that. [laughs] I think that we need to balance the light with the dark, and I don’t think anyone, particularly women, should ever feel guilty about consuming something that is maybe not the most thought-provoking material out there. I think we should feel free to enjoy what we enjoy and not feel like we have to apologize for that or make excuses for ourselves.

I’m a big fan of [reality TV], and I have been for some time. When I started working on my second book, I felt really tapped out in terms of material, because I had used so much of my own life in my first book. They were rerunning the first season of The Real Housewives of New York City, and I was watching it, and I was like, This is so rife with drama and tension. It occurred to me that this would be a great setting for my next novel, and that I know these women so well, and I know their relationships so well, that I could borrow a little bit from them.

HG: Reality TV is such a different viewing experience.

JK: I think it’s very interesting that it’s so manipulated, and yet we still call it reality TV. That turned out to be a very prescient medium given where we find ourselves today with the first reality TV president; the way people are simply able to say, That’s not true, it’s fake news. Like if you say it, it just becomes true. Facts don’t matter. To me, that is very much playing off the reality TV culture.

HG: It’s a culture where every little thing, whether us viewers realize it or not, comes from a place of manipulation.

JK: Right. Yes. These are people’s real reactions to being put in these very highly-orchestrated and manipulated scenarios.

HG: The five Goal Diggers each see the world very differently. They have such different approaches to business and ambition and success and being a strong woman. Can you talk a little bit about forming their world views, and how you balanced such distinct opinions?

JK: The whole trick of it was, the show itself is purporting to be this new model of reality TV that’s the new guard of millennial women. It’s going to portray strong women, empowered women, women who support each other and build each other up. And it’s supposed to be the fresh take on reality TV that we’ve never seen before. Because mostly we’re seeing women who maybe have fabulous lives, but the only reason they have those fabulous lives is because they’re funded by men, and they’re conniving and backstabbing and all of these things. So Goal Diggers is like, We are gonna set the new tone for reality TV. The intentions are pure, and it turns out that people don’t want to consume that kind of content; it’s not interesting to the viewer. So they — when I say “they,” I mean Jesse the creator, the producers, the editors, everybody involved — start to go against the ideals they espouse at the beginning of the show.

For me, Brett represented the show in what it is on the surface, and Stephanie represented what was actually going on behind the scenes. Brett was the one who was drinking the Kool-aid, who was buying what Jesse was selling. So at first, you’re like, Okay, I’m on Brett’s side, this is great, she’s supportive of other women, she’s cool, she’s body positive. Stephanie is the one who is problematic here. I liked the idea that your perspective on each of them would shift midway through the book, and that you would start to see that Brett and the model of the show are really just a facade, and that Stephanie is the one who is the truth cannon and really shining a light on what’s going on, which is the complete opposite of what the show is espousing.

First finished copy has landed. Anyone who comments gets the chance to win it 😘

HG: Do you think America actually wants to see women succeed and support each other?

JK: I don’t know. You know, we’ve never done it. [laughs] It could be like an experiment. Let’s air a show about women who really like each other and support each other! I mean, listen: Conflict is interesting. No matter who is behind the conflict, conflict is interesting on screen. You need it on scripted shows; you need it on unscripted shows. It provides that drama that you need. I don’t know. [Goal Diggers] is my response to seeing people that I know and that I’ve worked with in the past really glom onto the explosion of #MeToo. And knowing that behind the scenes, how they are in their private lives does not align with this public persona that they’re putting out there as someone who is supportive of women. That hypocrisy drives me crazy. The show is kind of like my invention that gets into that disconnect between the way people present themselves in their public lives vs. what’s really going on in their private lives.

HG: At the end of the book, Kelly makes a comment about how she’s pushing a narrative that serves her and the show better than the truth does. Do you think people are stuck in this area between what we present vs. what life is really like?

JK: Yeah, I do. I think that’s true in not just the performance of feminism. I think that’s a very timely disease of the social media generation. We’re all guilty of presenting this image of ourselves on Instagram or Twitter. And often times, what’s really going on that we’re not captioning, that we’re not taking pictures of, is less glamorous, less funny, less exciting. Everybody has these boring and excruciating Tuesdays where you just can’t bring yourself to do the work that you need to do to get through the day. You’re dragging, you got in a fight with your significant other — you’re not going to put any of that stuff on social media. I think we know the dangers of fully buying into the hype that people put out there, because then it makes you feel worse about your own life. That’s all well-documented.

I do think that something that has emerged over the last year that I noticed, that I respond to in this book that seems like a subculture of that — I was blown away by some of the women I saw posting these inspirational memes about sisterhood and feminism, knowing how they treat other women. It really blew me away. I’m like, Do they know they’re being hypocritical? Or do they not realize that they mistreat other women? I don’t know. Obviously, in the book, Jesse is somewhat aware of the fact that she’s mistreating these women and underpaying them and letting them hang out to dry when they reach their expiration date. But I do think on some level, she buys into her own hype. And I do think that’s what’s going on with some of the real life examples I can think of. I think people do start to buy into their own hype.

HG: Your dedication at the very beginning of the book is intriguing: “For women who know that feeling.” Who are those women?

JK: That is a nod to the section where Stephanie’s talking about why she even signed up for this reality show, and how Jesse seduced her into it. She was sucked in and didn’t know how to get out of it alive. She didn’t know how to get out of it without really hurting her brand, really hurting the identity she created on the show. She starts talking about how when Jesse is unhappy with you, or when Jesse makes up her mind about someone and she’s not shining her light on you anymore, it’s this awful feeling.

That was born from a conversation I was having with someone about the book and being like, I’m writing a book about the way women can be really emotionally abusive to other women, and I’m scared to publish it in this era. We started sharing war stories about our respective female bosses. She was describing a scenario where she was left out of a really key social gathering that happened after work, and she was like, You know that feeling, when a woman has turned her back on you? And I was like, Yes, it is the worst. Your stomach just drops. And the way she said it, I was like, Women know this feeling. So that’s where the dedication came from.

HG: Ugh. Yes. I know that feeling.

JK: I’ve known the feeling for a long time. I’ve known it since middle school. You know, when girls decide they’re going to ostracize you. I think it’s a more painful feeling than being broken up with, than a guy breaking your heart. There’s something so specific about feeling betrayed by another woman that just cuts me to the core.

HG: You mentioned you were nervous about publishing The Favorite Sister in this era. What has the reaction been like?

JK: I was worried about it, and then I started thinking about it more. I started thinking about how I was gonna position the book when it came out. Something that occurred to me, that I think has occurred to other people as well, is the culture that breeds these men who violate women in all of these abhorrent ways also breeds this mistrust and competition and posturing among women. I don’t think that is something we are born with, I don’t think it’s a question of nature. I think we are nurtured to be like that. I think men pit women against each other. I think the culture pits women against each other.

After I made that connection, I started seeing it everywhere. I started seeing it on my TV, I started seeing it in conversations I had with other men. And I realized this is something that if we want to change, we have to recognize it. Because now, when I recognize it, whenever that starts happening, I’m like, Oh, hell no, and I change the channel. If it’s happening in a conversation with a guy, I refuse to rise to it, or I call it out. So I’m glad I did a little soul searching about that and worked that out for myself. I always want to be part of the solution, not the problem.

HG: How can we own being ambitious women?

JK: During one of the awards shows this past winter, there was an actress who got up and gave a speech about the #TimesUp movement, saying all of these necessary and really raw truths. And I got a text message from a guy friend, commenting negatively on her appearance. In the past, even though it would have made me uncomfortable, I wouldn’t want to have made this guy feel uncomfortable, so I would have engaged with it. And I looked at [the text], and I’m like, She’s up here talking about all the fucking women in this room who have been sexually assaulted and harassed and belittled and undermined and underpaid by these rich white dudes, and all you have to say is that she doesn’t look good?

That is so fucked up! No! So I didn’t say anything. And 24 hours later, he followed up and was like, I guess you didn’t like that. And I was like, Well, actually, I don’t like talking about women’s appearances when they’re saying something important and thoughtful. The focus shouldn’t be on their appearance, good or bad. I hate that so much. Writing this book made me more aware of how much of a focus there is on women’s appearances and how it does play into ambition. It really is a distraction to think about all the energy we waste worrying about how we look, what we eat. Men don’t feel like they have to look a certain way in order to get everything they want out of life. I just want the same for women.

Now, the new pressure — Stephanie obviously takes issue with this — is to look like you’re not wearing makeup. To look like you haven’t had your hair done. To look like you haven’t put any effort into your outfit. And it’s so exhausting, because all of that takes so much work, so much money, so much time. Or, if you’re not born with those genes, if you want to try and achieve that effect, it does require all of those things. Again, it’s a distraction. It’s like, Why do I want to waste my brain power and my energy on my appearance, when it could be on something that’s so much bigger and more meaningful?

HG: You write bravely about sensitive topics in both The Favorite Sister and your first novel, Luckiest Girl Alive. How do you find the courage to write so openly?

JK: There’s so much solitude involved in the act of writing. It’s a long, drawn-out process. So when you’re working on it, there’s a part of you that intellectually and logically knows that people are actually going to read this. [laughs] People who know you, and people who might suspect you’re writing about them — all of that is present in the back of your mind. But when you’re by yourself for hours and hours on end, day in and day out, the focus is not on that. You’re alone with yourself, you’re able to be honest with yourself.

It’s only after you’ve written it where I feel like the bravery comes in. To be like, Okay, I’m actually going to allow this to be published. Okay, I’m actually going to allow this to go out. When you’re actually doing it, you don’t really need to be brave. You need to give yourself permission to just write. Because otherwise, you’ll never get it done. It’s so hard to do anyway, and if you’re putting extra shackles on yourself, forget it. It’s just impossible. But the fear of exposure and feeling very vulnerable and having to go through with it anyway, that comes in later. That comes in when you’re closer to the actual publish date.

Andy Cohen called me this morning to tell me he loved the book and ima need a vitals check 💀 💀 💀

HG: What are you reading right now? And what’s your favorite book that you’ve read this year?

JK: Right now I’m reading The Outsider by Stephen King. But my favorite book I’ve read this year is Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark. I just loved that. It was the first time in a while that I had read something about a horrific crime, but there was still so much compassion in how she wrote. I found that to be such a refreshing combination. It really made me think, as a writer, about the kind of writer that I want to be. I love books that simultaneously entertain me and inspire me to be better.

Oprah’s Latest Book Club Pick Is a Prison Memoir Written by a Wrongfully Convicted Man

(NEW YORK) — Anthony Ray Hinton, wrongly imprisoned for nearly 30 years, can hardly believe how his luck has changed.

Hinton’s memoir, “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row,” is Oprah Winfrey’s latest book club pick, a dream for virtually any writer and beyond the imagination for a man who was once confined to a 5-by-7-foot cell. Tuesday’s announcement comes three years after Hinton’s release from Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham, Alabama. He had been convicted for two 1985 murders in Birmingham, where he still lives.

Hinton, during a recent telephone interview with The Associated Press, called Winfrey’s endorsement “the second biggest surprise” of his life.

“The biggest surprise was being charged with a crime I didn’t commit.”

Published in March, Hinton’s book tells of his conviction for killing two fast-food restaurant workers during separate robberies, and his decades spent on death row. His efforts to overturn the conviction reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which in 2014 unanimously ruled he had been denied a fair trial. Hinton was freed after new ballistics tests contradicted the only evidence — an analysis of crime-scene bullets — that connected Hinton to the slayings. When he finally got out, the words he spoke to loved ones greeting him — “The sun does shine” — became his memoir’s title.

Hinton, 61, likened himself to Job as a man who lost everything, but eventually saw his life restored. Speaking of his time in jail, he said, “Every day was hell, every night was hell, every waking moment was hell.” But upon leaving, “The sun was shining brighter than I could ever remember it shining.”

Hinton’s legal case was taken on by the Alabama-based Equal Justice Initiative and its director, Bryan Stevenson, whose 2014 book “Just Mercy” is considered essential reading about the criminal justice system. Stevenson provided the foreword to “The Sun Does Shine,” which Hinton wrote with Lara Love Hardin. Her other credits include co-writing “The Book of Forgiving” with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mpho Tutu.

In a promotional video released Tuesday, Winfrey noted that most of her picks over the past 20 years have been works of fiction. But she said “The Sun Does Shine” was a worthy exception.

“This story reads like an epic novel and it is all true,” Winfrey said. “You will, throughout the book, try to imagine yourself — falsely accused, and in a 5-by-7 cell for 30 years. He is a remarkable storyteller and when you read it you’ll be swept away.”

Winfrey’s interview with Hinton will air Sunday on her OWN network. Her “O” magazine will highlight “The Sun Does Shine” in its July issue. Winfrey has turned dozens of books into best-sellers, whether older works such as John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” or contemporary novels such as Jane Hamilton’s “A Map of the World.”

In February, Winfrey chose a novel that also focuses on a man jailed for a crime he didn’t commit, Tayari Jones’ “An American Marriage.”

The Real History Behind Book Burning and Fahrenheit 451

When the HBO adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 premieres on Saturday, the movie will introduce a contemporary twist to the centuries-long history of burning books — one in which Bradbury’s story plays a significant role.

References to book burning date back far into history: The Chinese Emperor Shih Huang Ti “thought that if he burned all the documents in his kingdom, history would begin with him” in 213 BCE, TIME previously noted. And when “the Mongols sacked Baghdad in 1258, the waters of the Tigris were said to have run black with ink from all the destroyed books.” But, experts say, book burning as we know it today is a relatively recent development.

“In the modern sense, it’s very much a mid-20th century idea, very much a propaganda thing that happens during World War II,” says Matthew Fishburn, author of Burning Books.

The defining moment for that modern history came in 1933, with one of history’s most infamous book-burnings — the one that prompted TIME to coin the word “bibliocaust.” It was that year, in Berlin and elsewhere, that Nazi forces led the burning of tens of thousands of books, from the works of Sigmund Freud to those of Jack London. Along with the Nazi ideology that there existed a superior race of people came the idea that there was one true cultural and ideological canon; that which didn’t fit was consigned to the fire.

“The old goes up in flames, the new shall be fashioned from the flame in our hearts,” Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels told the crowd then, as TIME reported.

As the scholar Rebecca Knuth explained to Smithsonian.com last year, the path to that moment in 1933 in some ways starts with the printing press and the subsequent spread of mass media. Whereas hand-written manuscripts that predated movable type were more valuable for their scarcity, relatively few people had access to them and not everyone understood just how much the distribution of knowledge could change world events. Although books had always been (and still are) incidentally destroyed or stolen in times of conflict, it was only later that their destruction gained greater symbolism, even as they became easier to replace. (What TIME called a “bibliocaust” Knuth has called “libricide,” which she uses to describe the 20th-century phenomenon of “large-scale, regime-sanctioned destruction of books and libraries” within “a framework of genocide and ethnocide.”)

As the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum points out in its record of that moment in 1933, Germany’s history of burning books didn’t start with the Nazis. In 1817, for the 300th anniversary of Martin Luther’s launching of Protestantism, students held a major burning of “Un-German” books. According to Fishburn, by the time of the Nazi book-burning, in some ways the practice would have seemed “weirdly anachronistic,” a holdover from an earlier time when burning a book could have actually made a difference in what people knew.

“Books were in such multiples, thanks to industrial book production,” Fishburn explains, “the idea that you could get rid of the books you didn’t like seemed impossible.”

That is perhaps, he says, why it took a little while for the wider world to understand what the Nazis were up to. Some authors initially felt pride to have been included in such a bonfire, and Fishburn says that some book lovers in English-speaking countries expressed a certain wistfulness that in Germany books were thought to hold such power. But the Nazi authorities really were out to close off society to certain ideas, and they were unfortunately far more successful at it than many expected.

When that truth became clear, the modern power of book-burning was reinforced — as was the idea that to be the one burning the books was a sure sign of villainy.

Get your history fix in one place: sign up for the weekly TIME History newsletter

In 1945, after the Allies defeated the Nazis, Berlin saw another round of what was described as a “literary cleanup” — this time an anti-Nazi one — that TIME noted was “not quite like Goebbels’ book-burning; but yet it was quite like it.” In general, though the U.S. government participated in this effort, it did so with a consciousness that it was better to quietly pulp the undesirable books than to burn them publicly.

“It becomes very bad to be labeled a book burner, but it’s not necessarily considered bad to just clear out whole shelves of books from a public institution,” Fishburn says.

The taboo against book-burning was highlighted when, not long after, the United States experienced its own period of fear about books that didn’t fit in. In the 1940s and ’50s, as the Cold War took seed, the country saw its share of book-burnings. In 1940, members of the Binghamton, N.Y., Board of Education, for example, proposed a public burning of textbooks thought to be subversive. (In a crucial distinction from the Nazi book-burning, most American incidents took place on the local level; the federal government was well aware of the backlash that would come with publicly burning books, says Fishburn.)

In 1953, at the height of the American book-burning debate, the American Library Association and American Book Publishers Council issued a statement defending “the freedom to read.” It was that same year that President Eisenhower delivered a commencement address at Dartmouth imploring students, “Don’t join the book burners.” As Fishburn notes in his book, Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 came out in 1953, having been written in the context of this national conversation. Fishburn posits that “the iconic role of book burning in the popular imagination took hold, and an orthodox position on book burning was forged” in this period between 1933 and 1953.

Book-burning by then had become a sort of shorthand: if you are on the side of book-burners, you’ve already lost the argument.

The release of Fahrenheit 451 in many ways marks the end, or at least the culmination, of the modern era of book-burning. The Nazis had reintroduced the idea to society and the U.S. had learned the hard way that, due in large part to that association, the practice was taboo. By the time Bradbury wrote his book, the symbolism of the idea would have been clear to all of his readers — and it still holds today.

As Knuth notes in Burning Books and Leveling Libraries, the 20th-century phenomenon of mass regime-sponsored destruction of books has been accompanied, especially more recently, by more scattershot small-scale destruction, such as a Koran-burning planned by a small Florida church in 2010. This works on the same theory as mass book burning does: books represent ideas, and destroying them is also a surefire way to get attention, even if it doesn’t entirely accomplish what the book-burners wanted.

And large-scale book burning does continue: In 2013, al-Qaeda-affiliated militants in Mali burned the library in Timbuktu and in 2015 ISIS burned books from Mosul’s library, as a show of both ideological and territorial conquest.

So, though the prime era of book-burning has passed, and with it the atmosphere that created Fahrenheit 451, the symbolism is baked into the world’s memory, and words on fire are still a tragically powerful image. As TIME’s Lance Morrow wrote in 1988, after a fire at the main library of the Soviet National Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, “whenever books burn, one is haunted by a sense of mourning.”

Whatever Happened to the Book Herman Melville Wrote After ‘Moby-Dick’?

Bettmann

Book publishing—like many commercial industries—is inherently a gamble. You can pick your favorite spec manuscripts, think the author behind it is brilliant, spend gobs of money on marketing, and still your latest offering can bomb.

Unknown debuts can turn into unexpected blockbusters overnight, and seasoned hitmakers can produce a surprising dud mid-career. Every green-lit project has an air of risk, expectation, and mystery surrounding it.

Take Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Now considered one of the greatest novels ever written, the book initially received mixed reviews only to fall into obscurity by the end of Melville’s life.

James Comey’s New Book Is Already Outpacing Michael Wolff’s ‘Fire and Fury’—By At Least One Measure

Interest in James Comey’s upcoming book is through the roof, and President Donald Trump’s blistering Twitter attacks against his former FBI directly this past week likely are only stoking anticipation for the memoir.

Comey’s A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership, which will be released on Tuesday, is already due to be one of the biggest political books of the year.

Macmillan, the book’s publisher, has ordered 850,000 copies to meet the expected demand. To compare, Michael Wolff’s sleeper hit Fire and Fury‘s first print run was only 150,000 copies. Macmillan president Don Weisberg told CNNMoney that A Higher Loyalty is the largest first printing the publishing house has done so far this year.

And if the success of Fire and Fury–and the preorder numbers for A Higher Loyalty–are any indication, Comey’s book will be a bestseller. Since its first print, more than two million copies of Fire and Fury have been sold. For its part, A Higher Loyalty has already pre-sold close to 200,000 copies and is at the top of Amazon’s best sellers list.

Is Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ as Sexist and Godawful as the Book?

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Late last year, I surmised that Ready Player One might be the most difficult project of Steven Spielberg’s career—not because the director wasn’t capable of crafting high-flying popcorn extravaganzas, but because his source material, Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel, was subpar. Okay, I went a bit further than that, calling it “a terribly written piece of adolescent fantasy that, at heart, exemplifies everything wrong and repellent about modern nerd culture.”

I stand by that assessment of both the book and the task laid before Spielberg. And having now seen the film, I can say that—with all due respect to my esteemed editor—the illustrious director has failed to meet that challenge, scarcely improving upon the many fundamental shortcomings of Cline’s work.

To be sure, Spielberg remains a master of staging coherent and thrilling action set pieces, and his empathy for underdog outsiders is as strong and genuine as always. Yet despite removing some of his story’s most off-putting elements, his adaptation stands as a one-note celebration of pop-culture nostalgia, concerned only with commending its audience for their love of Batman, Child’s Play, The Iron Giant and countless other cartoons, video games and movies. It’s all blind, superficial adoration devoid of the very sort of adult perspective it so desperately requires.

John Oliver Opens Up About His Gay Bunny Book Outselling ‘Homophobe’ Mike Pence’s

NBC

When John Oliver announced the release of his own parody version of a new children’s book about the Pence family’s pet bunny, Marlon Bundo, even he didn’t think it would reach the top of Amazon’s best-seller list in the first 24 hours. And yet there it sits, ahead of not just Charlotte Pence’s book but also James Comey’s new memoir.

“I have no beef with his bunny,” Oliver told Seth Meyers on a victory lap of sorts Tuesday night. “The beef comes in regarding Michael Pence, who has a history of, let’s say, homophobic views.” He then added, “I just sounded like I was talking around it, but I was actually just saying the word of the thing that he emphatically is: a homophobe.”

When Meyers brought up the overwhelming success of the book, the proceeds of which are going to charities that benefit LGBTQ youth and AIDS research, Oliver revealed that just before the Late Night taping, he had received the latest sales numbers. “I’m sure HBO would find it absolutely hilarious they’re getting no money out of this,” he said.

Charlotte Pence Is Surprisingly Cool With John Oliver Trolling Her Bunny Book

The View

As of Tuesday morning, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo is still out-selling Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President by Charlotte Pence on Amazon’s best-seller list. And the vice president’s daughter seems totally chill about it.

Charlotte and her mother Karen Pence were on Fox Business Network with Maria Bartiromo to promote their new book when the host casually brought up the fact that Oliver’s parody book about a gay bunny—revealed on his HBO show Sunday night—had just knocked James Comey’s upcoming memoir off of Amazon’s top spot.

“I mean, I think you know, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery in a way,” Charlotte said. “But also, in all seriousness, his book is contributing to charities that I think we can all get behind. We have two books giving to charities that are about bunnies so I’m all for it really.”

Black Panther’s Dora Milaje are Getting Comic Book Spin-Off

The Dora Milaje the female warriors who serve and protect the Wakanda kingdom and T’Challa are finally getting a comic book spinoff. Marvel editor Wil Moss announced on Friday that the elite force would appear in a collection of one-shot comics Wakanda Forever.

Nnedi Okorafor will write the comics. In an interview with Vogue Okorafor said of the female protectors, “Typically when you see them, they’re with T’Challa, representing and protecting him. Now you’re going to see the Dora Miljae for the first time as an independent entity; they’re not under the shadow of the throne.”

Alberto Alburquerque will do the art. The comics will follow Okoye, Ayo, Aneka and the Dora Milaje as their stories move through Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers and X-Men. The first issue will see the ladies head to New York with Peter Parker to “investigate a threat to national security.”

In a moment Okorafor said was “coming for a long time,” the first issue arrives in June, followed by X-Men: Wakanda Forever in July and Avengers: Wakanda Forever in August.

Gabrielle Union Says Writing Book Was Therapeutic

Gabrielle Union says opening up about her sexual assault and divorce in her recent memoir has been healing.

The actress got candid about her failed marriage to former NFL player Chris Howard and recounted being raped  in her book We’re Going to Need More Wine, which was released in October.

“Writing my book, was therapeutic…whether I was talking about sexual assault, failed marriages or finding joy in being my authentic self,” she told Good Housekeeping magazine. “Acknowledging you’re in pain is the first step, and then seeking help. The online community is full of people going through the exact same thing you are.”

The actress, who has been open about being attacked and raped at the age of 19, has become part of the Time’s Up movement, which aims to combat sexual harassment, gender inequality and discrimination.

“I feel a responsibility to be a decent human being to everyone and accountable for my actions,” she said, explaining her involvement in various women’s charities. “I want to leave every room I enter brighter than how I found it.”

In addition to her activism and acting roles, she also has her own hair care brand Flawless and a clothing line with New York & Company, which was influenced by style she sees on the street and on Instagram.

The 1 Book You Should Read About Money, According to NFL Star and Entrepreneur Richard Sherman

Over the last several years, NFL star Richard Sherman has been rather forward-thinking about his finances. He became an early adopter of cryptocurrency when he started accepting Bitcoin on his website for merchandise, and he recently told MONEY that he saves 60% of every paycheck he gets.

So where did this inspiration come from? Sherman says the book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki changed his outlook on money.

“It was the book that opened my eyes to the way money really works,” he told MONEY. “It blew me away.”

Sherman says he first read the book about 10 years ago, when he was a student at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he played football on a scholarship. He grew up in Compton, California, and says getting to Stanford was a bit of a culture shock; he didn’t have the financial resources many other students had.

“As a kid, it was so ridiculous how I saw money, how my parents saw money, how my family saw money,” he says. “My parents were $ 40,000 in debt their entire lives. They went bankrupt twice. It was crazy. They’d get their taxes back and spend it all on gifts, things they wanted, trying to pay the cars off. Getting into more debt. But [the book] changed my perspective.”

Released in 1997, Rich Dad Poor Dad was a massive bestseller, selling tens of millions of copies worldwide in the last two decades. One of its main arguments is that the public school system does nothing to teach kids about money and finances, and instead, street smarts is more of an asset for wealth building. Some, like Sherman, praise it. Some are critical of its premise and the advice within, arguing that Kiyosaki is just another salesman trying to make a quick buck.

Regardless, it seems to have worked for Sherman, who is the highest paid cornerback in the NFL — his most recent contract has him earning a guaranteed $ 40 million over 4 years.

“When I was growing up, nobody gave me the book on how to invest in stocks, how to invest in real estate,” he says. “I was naive to everything. I think nowadays, players are more informed because it’s so much more accessible.”

Remember When We Were Sidekicks? – BLACK PANTHER and COMIC BOOK POLITICS

Minor spoilers ahead

This isn’t so much a review as a reflection. It’s well documented how I feel about Black Panther. I pushed for Black Panther’s inclusion in the Avengers years ago. In April 2013, I wrote “It’s Time For Black Panther On The Big Screen.” If you’re just tuning in, you can look back through my archives for my previous Panther posts. Here’s Cary Darling’s Houston Chronicle article I was featured in “Houston fans are pumped for ‘Black Panther’ superhero movie with virtually all-African-American cast

Well, I saw it.

Black Panther was one of the best movie experiences of my life.

First, this film isn’t “homework.” Typically, movies featuring a black cast feel as if they need to instruct audiences about the ills of society past and present. Black creatives know we may never have the media mic again, so we don’t waste any moments. In my humble opinion, you’re grown, and it’s unrealistic to burden a mainstream movie with responsibility to make you a better person. That cake is baked. The only hope for a better tomorrow lies within the children. Which is why the stories they see and hear about heroic people that look like them, and don’t, are vital. Blissfully, there are no sermons in Black Panther. White colonizers never even knew the technocratic marvel of Wakanda existed, so Wakandan society flourished atop a mountain of the most precious metal on earth, unmolested.

But, to director Ryan Coogler’s and Marvel Studios’ credit, Black Panther doesn’t shy away one iota from speaking truth to power about the broader consequences of isolationism, classism or societal injustice. Thematically, the tone of the film is a tasty gumbo of an Aesop fable and James Bond political pot-boiler with a side of Game of Thrones court intrigue and a dash of hot sauce. The strongest nations throughout history learn the greatest threats are not from without but within; Wakanda is no different. No one can escape the consequences of the choices they’ve made, whomever you are, from a lowly orphan to a mighty King, to a nation of millions, as Malcom X said famously, “Your chickens will always come home to roost.”

There has been some buzz by angry white fanboys with absurd notions regarding Black Panther. They’ve declared comic book characters or stories must somehow be “apolitical”. And that the political agenda surrounding this film makes them “uncomfortable.”  (Aw, pobrecito!)

However, black folks continue to celebrate the creative, cultural and financial success of the only big budget comic book movie featuring a black cast and crew undeterred.

The tone-deaf reaction of some can be expected. Wonder Woman debuted to similar trolling about sexism (against men) and uproars about Alamo Drafthouse Theaters’ woman-only screeings. Racism, sexism and pop culture fandom aren’t mutually exclusive, in fact, any female, non-gender specific person, Bleek, cosplayer, collector, or actor of color can relay incidences of racism, sexisim or homophobia they’ve encountered. This harassment both online; like John Boyega for the crime of being a black stormtrooper in “The Force Awakens” or at cons where “Cosplay is not Consent” has to be repeatedly drummed into grabby Comic Con attendees.

I’ve been trolled by white men I don’t know from Adam with the caucasity to tell me I had “no right to speak about Black Panther because I’m not a real comic book fan.”  Now, not liking or even hating Black Panther doesn’t make you a racist. Telling me I can’t love it does. And using the fig leaf of “political agendas have no place in Comic Book Movies” to hide your bigotry only exposes your own political agenda.

As hard as it may be for you to believe, Jimothy, this movie isn’t about you…

White Supremacy is a Hell of a Drug

In his Forbes’ article chronicling Black Panther’s unprecedented success, Scott Mendelson (a white guy so you can trust him, Jimothy) titled “Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Crushes Conventional Wisdom With Record $ 218M Debut” had this to say regarding Black Panther:

This isn’t just a blow to conventional wisdom about minority-led blockbusters, it’s a blow to conventional wisdom concerning the MCU. One of their more outside-the-box offerings, one of their most director-driven films and one of their most overtly political pictures yet, one that plays more like a drama than an action spectacular, is now on pace to be one of their very biggest movies. Like Pixar, I hope the MCU is realizing that its (stereotypically) riskiest bets turn out to be their biggest wins. Playing it safe is no longer the safe choice.”

Let’s talk a little about “politics in comics” before we move forward. Because this will come up more often as women, blacks, Asians, non-binary folks and others underserved in the pop media landscape take the lead on both sides of the camera and all phases of production in Hollywood. Let’s look at an example of how political thought not only has always been a part of comics, it grounds the greatest heroes and drives the best stories.

Captain America was created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, his first appearance was Captain America Comics #1 published in 1941 by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. Captain America was designed as a patriotic supersoldier who fought the Axis powers of World War II and was Timely Comics’ most popular character during the wartime period. Steve Rogers, “the skinny kid from Brooklyn” that became America’s enduring champion and the “First Avenger” in Marvels MCU, was 4F but wanted desperately to serve his country like his only childhood friend Sgt. Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes. Steve endured bullying with courage and tenacity, he knew what it meant to be powerless, which is why Dr. Erskine, the lead scientist of the super soldier program, believed Rogers was the ideal candidate.

Dr. Abraham Erskine: The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion.
Steve Rogers: Thanks. I think.
Dr. Abraham Erskine: [he pours two drinks] Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier, but a good man.”

Rogers, now a super soldier, dressed in red white & blue named Captain America quit touring with the USO selling war bonds, went to the front lines and punched Nazis in the face on a daily basis.

That’s a political statement.

It’s endemic to who he is. Rogers believes in, if not America as it is, the aspirational ideal of what America SHOULD be for all her people. He’s such a patriot, once he leaned the truth about what the American government was doing in our name? He helped take down SHIELD, fought Iron Man, and became a fugitive from justice. Can you separate Captain America’s political views or core beliefs about freedom and justice from his character?

Of course not. Nor should you. That’s WHY we love Captain America. It’s what makes him a hero.

-Amnestic fanboys must have forgotten political stances made in The Avengers and all three Captain America Movies. SHIELD/HYDRA. Steve Rogers RAFT breakout after Civil War. The Sakovia Accords; UN oversight of “enhanced” individuals that split the Avengers. The political asylum granted by Wakanda. The entire X-Men comic run since Mutants were allegories of blacks during the Civil Rights Era of the 1960’s. MUTANT REGISTRATION ACT. TRASK Sentinel Program. The Legacy Virus that decimated fictional mutants concurrently during President Reagan’s silence on the spread of HIV in the 90’s that cost millions of real people their lives. Or, the second episode of Superfriends that spoke out against man-made climate change and promoted ocean conservation in the 1970’s.

I could go on.

Decades of the politics of the day driving comic book stories that no one cared about, that is, when blacks were sidekicks. This changed last Thursday.

Black Panther is a movie about the heir to the throne of a fictional African nation who wears the hereditary mantle of both monarch and protector of his realm “The Black Panther.” Is it possible to ignore or separate his blackness and his unique Afrocentric culture or world view from this character? Should every narrative he’s a part of ignore the plight of black people that do not enjoy the privilege of Wakandan citizenship?

Of course not.

One of the most powerful Black Panther comic book stories was the Jungle Action series of the seventies featuring Black Panther vs. The Ku Klux Klan. How do you de-politicize a black king taking on the the Klan? Why should we even want to? Like Cap’s political stance and core beliefs, Black Panther’s ethnicity & culture are central to his narrative and endemic to the character.

Black Panther is a powerful, resonant, self-reflective exercise that pays homage to both the source material and the African diaspora. It represents with unconditional love, deep respect, unique style, and an effortless flourish, yet still remembers to be a hell of a good time at the movies!

Black Panther was more than I could possibly ask for and one of the best examples of what a comic book movie can be. Period.

JAY-Z’s 4:44 Inspires Personal Finance Book to Build Black Wealth

In addition to revealing raw emotion and intimate revelations about his family, Jay-Z packed his critically acclaimed 13th studio album, 4:44, with inspirational gems about economic empowerment. Ash Exantus, a financial expert and author popularly known as “Ash Cash,” has transformed the lessons in financial literacy from the album into a new book titled The Wake Up Call: Financial Inspiration Learned from 4:44 + A Step by Step Guide on How to Implement Each Financial Principle.

In the book, Exantus decodes the messages and offers readers a blueprint on credit management, entrepreneurship, collective economics, and smart investments. The overall purpose of the book is to empower the African American community to manage money more effectively and build generational wealth.

In the following excerpt, Exantus explains the correlation between financial freedom as a means to fight systemic racism and build political capital and power.

When Jay says Financial Freedom is our only hope he is not exaggerating. Even before #45 took office we began to see a resurgence of racism. Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Philando Castile, Alton Sterling, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Kalief Browder and the countless other injustices are examples of what happens when our collective power is not respected. When there is no real consequence for injustice then we are simply begging for mercy, and no one respects a beggar! The truth of the matter is that money is power! Those who control the money, control everything else… Politics, Schools, Business, Police, Community and everything else in between.

Just to be clear racism isn’t what the dictionary and the media want you to believe it is; which is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. The true definition of racism (as stated by Dr. Claude Anderson in his powerful book #Powernomics) is when one group holds a disproportionate share of wealth and power over another group then uses those resources to marginalize, exploit, exclude and subordinate the weaker group. That’s why when you turn on the television it seems like African-Americans are losing every-day! Because of systemic and institutionalized racism!

Without getting too deep into the history of black economics, we must realize that most Blacks have only been able to create ‘real’ wealth and financial freedom for the last 50 years – slavery lasted 223 years from 1640-1863, then reconstruction and Jim Crow laws lasted 102 years from 1863-1965. It wasn’t until the post-civil rights era that we began to see the tides change. And to be clear most of this was LEGAL and sanctioned by the government. For a more in depth look at the government’s involvement in wealth disparities and inequities please read “The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America” by Richard Rothstein.

I can go on and on about how we got here but 4:44 is the first step in making things right. A recent report titled “The Road to Zero Wealth,” looks at the past 30 years of wealth accumulation across racial lines, as well as what the future will bring if current trends continue; it comes to the conclusion that by 2053, just 10 years after the country is projected to become majority non-white, black median families will own zero wealth and twenty years later, Latino median families will follow suit. White median families will continue to own six figures. The key words here are “If current trends continue!” That’s why it’s imperative that we get our collective economic lives together!

The following lessons in this book will give you a step by step guide on how to begin to create financial freedom for you, your family, and community. This is probably not the first or last time we will have this conversation and I can assure you that we have a steep mountain to climb, but if we all get on the same page then we can tip the scale and reach the mountain top faster.

You will learn about credit; what it is, how it works and how you can use it to build wealth. There is a step by step guide on how to buy real estate and the power it holds in the wealth creation process. We discuss appreciation and depreciation and how to spend your money wisely. We discuss starting a business, and creating multiple streams of income. We tackle spirituality and discuss how “This Spiritual S#@t Really Works” especially when it comes to your finances. You will learn about the importance of cooperative economics, how to pass down wealth to the next generation, and how to protect your ASSets through insurance, wills and trusts. This guide will give you the jump start needed to right the wrongs of economic inequality.

Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 just got $300 cheaper, but there’s a catch

Surface Book 2 vs MacBook Pro

When it launched late last year, Microsoft’s flagship Surface Book 2 started at $ 1,499. That might not raise any eyebrows among people who have bought a MacBook before, but Windows laptops don’t normally command that kind of premium, magical hybrid design or not.

So it’s probably not a great sign that Microsoft is introducing a lower-priced version of the Surface Book 2 with less storage. The new entry-level Surface Book costs $ 1,199 and comes with 128GB of storage, compared to the 256GB in the $ 1,499 version.

Lupita Nyong’o To Publish Children’s Book Celebrating Color

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is writing a children’s book that’s slated to drop in 2019.

The New York Times reports the 12 Years A Slave actress will title the book Sulwe which means star. The word comes from her native language Luo.  The book will be catered to kids between the ages of 5 and 7.

The book will tell the story of 5-year-old Sulwe growing up in Kenya . Sulwe has the darkest skin out of everyone in her family, which causes her to find a way to lighten her skin so she doesn’t stand out.

Throughout the book Sulwe goes on an adventure that helps her along with advice from her mother discover the beauty she’s always had.

This book deals with the harsh but ever present issue that faces so many kids today. This story is near to Nyong’o’s heart because she experienced the same thing as a child. She struggled with accepting herself as she was.

She remembers becoming more aware of her differences while in school when others would make remarks. It really hit home when she heard the language of “brown and pretty” used to describe and compliment her sister with a lighter complexion.

With this book, Nyong’o hopes to help kids see both their inner and outer beauty and to love themselves for who they are.

Why to book a flight for early morning

Booking the right kind of flight is essential for getting your vacation off to a good start. You don’t want to have to deal with stress, panic, and all the other issues that generally come with taking a flight. That’s why you’ve got to be sure you do what you can to choose the best flight to suit your circumstances. Being stuck in an airport, or having a canceled flight can make the holidays a really miserable time of year.

So, the thing to do is to come up with excellent ways of ensuring the flying experience goes off as well as possible. And, one of the oldest tricks in the book is to make sure you book and catch a flight for the early morning. Sure, you’ll have to get up earlier, but the advantages to doing this far outweigh the disadvantages and will help make your vacation experience much better. These are some of the awesome benefits of booking an early morning flight.

Less chance of cancellation

The major positive for booking an early morning flight these days is that there is a much smaller chance of cancellation. In fact, studies have shown us that early morning flights are also less likely to experience delays than afternoon and evening flights. The best time to fly is before 8am, whereas the risk of delays only grows every hour before reaching its peak at around 6pm. This is widely regarded to be a result of uncrowded airspace, and less of a backlog of planes waiting to take off.

More time at your destination

One of the things we love the most about catching an early flight is that it leaves more time at your destination venue. Think about it, when you get to your location on an evening flight, you only get the first night and the rest of the trip. And that first night you could well be jet-lagged, worn out, and not feeling very sociable. It’s often a write-off. However, if you arrive there in the late morning or early afternoon you will get at least half a day extra, and this can make all the difference when it comes to the length and enjoyment of your stay.

It will be a smoother flight

It should come as no surprise that early morning flights are significantly smoother and more appealing than those later in the day as well. There is less turbulence in the sky earlier in the morning, and the chance of thunderstorms is much less. You also have to factor in that there are going to be fewer people in the airport, which means it will be less busy, and you’re not going to have to deal with the chaos of having too many people. If you can’t stand crowds, this is definitely the best time of the day to fly – and, as if that wasn’t enough, you also have the benefit of paying less for flights because they are earlier.

Booking a flight for the right time is imperative for helping you get the most out of your vacation. There are so many things that can go wrong when you are going to fly to your chosen destination, but, by booking a flight as early as possible, you will be able to avoid this. There are so many plus points to early travel, and you have to ensure you are catching the earliest flight you can.

Meghan Markle’s Hatin’ Half-Sister Is Writing a Tell-All Book

Screenshot/Good Morning Britain

Black Twitter could not be controlled last Monday when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement.

While we were fruitlessly attempting to contain our excitement at the prospect of a Black duchess, the half-sister of the soon-to-be member of the Royal family, Samantha Grant, was concocting material for memoir Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister.

The 57-year-old, who is a former actress and model, began doing press for the book in October. During an interview with Good Morning Britain, she clarified that the memoir, which already appears worthy of claims of libel from the title alone, would not be a defamatory “tell-all:”

“First of all, it’s only a tell-all in that I go through and recant some of the beautiful nuances of our lives, our family home. But more importantly, it has to do with the inter-racial evo
